Carolei Royce had only been 16 years old when the Conquest came to the Vale, and would never forget seeing Vhagar fly above Runestone after the battle and the fear, power, and awe the dragon invoked. She had trained as a warrior since that day, taking up a spear and shield and fighting astride her horse—a poor replacement for a dragon.
As she grew older, she began to travel the lands of the Vale as a wandering warrior, attempting to exemplify the traits of a true knight even though knighthood was out of reach for her. In 6AC, she travelled to the Misty Moor to drive back the Mountain Clan the Sons of the Tree. It was there that she met Creighton Corbray, the two having a romantic tryst. However, he was not the only one she had been with in that time, making the identity of the child’s father a mystery to her—not that she would ever tell.
It was later that she discovered she was with child, and begged him to marry her to preserve both of their honour and have the child not be a bastard. He agreed, and it was a private, quick ceremony. But their matrimony would not last for long—before the child was even born, Creighton would be killed in a raid by a group of Clansman while the two returned to Runestone.
Though she remained in the place of her birth, her nephew now the Lord of Runestone, she was left mostly to raise her child by herself away from the castle in a cottage. She had wanted to continue her training as a warrior and continuing to help people, but with the pregnancy and her young daughter, it put her life on hold.
So it wouldn’t be until Nettie had turned 7, in 13AC where Carolei felt she could continue. She would start recruiting all young women around the Vale who sought to fight with blades and shields, to join her knightly order—the Cavaliers. She rode from castle to castle, gaining those by her side and riding together to assist the needy and protect the helpless.
Travelling for some time, they would stop one day near the Gates of the Moon, as Carolei sought to petition recognition as a knightly order, and recruit possible funding from the Eyrie. During their waylay, the Painted Dogs grew bold and sought to test their luck against the ancient castle. The Cavaliers fought them back, defending the castle and protecting those within, allowing none to pass through the Gates. After this, the Cavaliers were granted the Gates of the Moon to defend and rest and recruit from.
She would train young warriors and assist them in their growth to be knights, as well as travel around several tourneys and placing well. She would raise Nettie at the Gates of the Moon, and never remarried.
Carolei often joked of her as the replacement of their real child, by a Grumpkin that came in the night and stole her original child away from the crib and left a strange one behind. Nettie didn’t speak for the first few years of her life, and walked with a strange gait, always on her toes. The milestones that the Maesters predict for children came to her much later than others. She was known to be a shy child, hiding behind her mother’s skirts.
Nettie would find her first love out exploring the woods and forests and fields, where she would stay long past dark, terrifying her mother. She would come back with muddy clothes and a bundle of things she had found to scatter around her home.
She took to archery from as soon as she was old enough to hold a bow. Though it started as a way to keep her occupied and for her guardians to keep her in one place, it turned quickly from practicing shooting to leaving home to hunt and hawk. She had a keen eye for marksmanship, and it was the only thing she ever wished to speak about.
As she continued to grow, it was soon she was leading small hunting parties of her own and searching for fowl and game to take down, never for trophies or sport, but to bring home to cook and share at the Gates of the Moon.

Carolei Royce had only been 16 years old when the Conquest came to the Vale, and would never forget seeing Vhagar fly above Runestone after the battle and the fear, power, and awe the dragon invoked. She had trained as a warrior since that day, taking up a spear and shield and fighting astride her horse—a poor replacement for a dragon.
As she grew older, she began to travel the lands of the Vale as a wandering warrior, attempting to exemplify the traits of a true knight even though knighthood was out of reach for her. In 6AC, she travelled to the Misty Moor to drive back the Mountain Clan the Sons of the Tree. It was there that she met Creighton Corbray, the two having a romantic tryst. However, he was not the only one she had been with in that time, making the identity of the child’s father a mystery to her—not that she would ever tell.
It was later that she discovered she was with child, and begged him to marry her to preserve both of their honour and have the child not be a bastard. He agreed, and it was a private, quick ceremony. But their matrimony would not last for long—before the child was even born, Creighton would be killed in a raid by a group of Clansman while the two returned to Runestone.
Though she remained in the place of her birth, her nephew now the Lord of Runestone, she was left mostly to raise her child by herself away from the castle in a cottage. She had wanted to continue her training as a warrior and continuing to help people, but with the pregnancy and her young daughter, it put her life on hold.
So it wouldn’t be until Nettie had turned 7, in 13AC where Carolei felt she could continue. She would start recruiting all young women around the Vale who sought to fight with blades and shields, to join her knightly order—the Cavaliers. She rode from castle to castle, gaining those by her side and riding together to assist the needy and protect the helpless.
Travelling for some time, they would stop one day near the Gates of the Moon, as Carolei sought to petition recognition as a knightly order, and recruit possible funding from the Eyrie. During their waylay, the Painted Dogs grew bold and sought to test their luck against the ancient castle. The Cavaliers fought them back, defending the castle and protecting those within, allowing none to pass through the Gates. After this, the Cavaliers were granted the Gates of the Moon to defend and rest and recruit from.
She would train young warriors and assist them in their growth to be knights, as well as travel around several tourneys and placing well. She would raise Nettie at the Gates of the Moon, and never remarried.
Carolei often joked of her as the replacement of their real child, by a Grumpkin that came in the night and stole her original child away from the crib and left a strange one behind. Nettie didn’t speak for the first few years of her life, and walked with a strange gait, always on her toes. The milestones that the Maesters predict for children came to her much later than others. She was known to be a shy child, hiding behind her mother’s skirts.
Nettie would find her first love out exploring the woods and forests and fields, where she would stay long past dark, terrifying her mother. She would come back with muddy clothes and a bundle of things she had found to scatter around her home.
She took to archery from as soon as she was old enough to hold a bow. Though it started as a way to keep her occupied and for her guardians to keep her in one place, it turned quickly from practicing shooting to leaving home to hunt and hawk. She had a keen eye for marksmanship, and it was the only thing she ever wished to speak about.
As she continued to grow, it was soon she was leading small hunting parties of her own and searching for fowl and game to take down, never for trophies or sport, but to bring home to cook and share at the Gates of the Moon.

Is there any way to cope with this issue?
If I smell cigarette smoke, I cannot help but gag. I can barely breathe, and I'm not even sure whether this is a sensory issue, or a respiratory issue, or possibly both.
I was also told that my reaction to smoke can seem rude, but I don't know what else to do. If I can hardly breathe, how do I cope with something like that without seeming rude?
I also normally have to take UbeLyft to work, and most of the drivers smoke. Any advice on politely rejecting rides from smokers? Also, is there an alternative to avoid being late for work because a driver smoked? My family is already at their work long before I leave, and I can't drive, so Im not sure of any alternatives to UbeLyft.

My husband and I booked a 16-night AirBNB rental to have a getaway with our pets, where I could work remotely, during a two-week reserve training in a rural area. There was no availability for him at the usual approved hotels and this expense was not reimbursable by the military, which we knew ahead of time. Two days after booking, my husband requested and paid for a 6 pm late checkout on our last day instead of the standard 11 am.
On checkout day, we received a text at 9 am from the host (a property management company) stating we had to leave by 11 am. My husband explained we paid for late checkout and that I was at the property with two pets and no vehicle. The host sent a screenshot of a failed Twilio (Messaging service) message attempted by the property manager from 10 days prior, stating late checkout was not possible, but we never received it. The screenshot clearly shows the message was not sent successfully. My husband asked for alternative solutions, explaining he was unable to leave his training before 3, but the host just repeated that we needed to leave by 11 am.
The host offered a cab number, which wasn’t feasible due to our pets and luggage, and ignored my husband’s suggestion of rental car reimbursement. They offered a $100 refund and insisted on taking communication to AirBNB's messaging (fair) so my husband sent screenshots of the text thread via AirBNB. He then received a phone call (outside the official channel) in which they stated they were coming to the property with the police. There was no other solutions offered or discussion of middle ground. I had a panic attack. My husband ended up having to request early dismissal, missing four hours of training and frankly making him look like shit. No one came to the property before we left and we later received an AirBNB message asking us to leave "at our earliest convenience", by which time my husband was arriving back at the house.
We're typically pretty laid back people. However, this was preceded by three separate instances where lack of planning or communication rendered parts of the property unusable for some time. The hot tub was serviced during the second week and was unusable for the last 4 days of our stay. Pest control showed up unannounced, so our dog could not go outside. We were without running water for a full day due to scheduled maintenance. Each of these could have been avoided or alleviated with some communication from the property manager. With more notice, we would have been flexible and made alternative plans to ensure departure before 11 am.
Are we unreasonable for wanting a partial refund? I believe the failed message and lack of follow-up are their responsibility.

Hi! This is my first post, so be kind! Also, English is not my first language.
My brother (28m) has been diagnosed with depression for 10+ years. Our parents are divorced and he was, until recently, living with my dad and I am living with mom.
Last year, around june or july, he texted me and told me he was feeling unwell. Turns out he hadn’t been taking his meds for months, as he was finally feeling somewhat well.
My mom and I were able to convince him to move in with us, and we have been very patient, going at his pace, and getting him to take his meds and go to therapy (although he was reluctant).
It was all going as well as it could go. We understand this is a very long process, and that his depression is for ever.
Recently, I have noticed that he’s kind of off, his sleeping patterns are worse than ever and today I found out he hasn’t been taking his meds for a month at least and hasn’t been going to therapy (psychoanalysis).
Even if I get to convince him to take the meds again (venlafaxine, quietapine), and go to therapy, how can I get him to commit?
Today, he hasn’t left his room at all, hasn’t eaten anything and hasn’t taken care of his dog. I am truly worried as he’s not a sharer about his feelings.
I tell him that I love him every day, and also try to respect his space and his wishes.
Do you have any suggestions of alternative therapies? Supplements? Words of wisdom?

2024.05.20 02:09 Doombocious Stratagems I feel need improvements, and how I'd change them
This is mostly a very opinionated post, but not for a lack of experimenting. I've played with some of these stratagems enough to know what needs fixing, and what I feel would be the best course of action. You're free to disagree, but that's not my problem. I like sharing ideas, and this is gonna be a long post.
The Spear - Despite popular opinion (I think), I believe the Spear needs some improvements in regards to its damage as much as it needs improvements to its lock-on. Improvements: Increase the Spear's damage to 1-shot Chargers, Tanks (Obliterators and Shredders), Hulks and Automaton Buildings regardless of where it hits. Reduce the Spear's lock-on reticle so it can be more accurate to what you're trying to lock onto, and reduce the effects of foliage and fog. Reasoning: The Spear is an amazing anti-super heavy unit weapon, but it lacks that similar treatment against regular Heavies. While it can 1-shot a Charger, Tank or Hulk, you need to somehow aim the rocket in a way that it hits them in their weak spots, otherwise it merely scratches them, or leaves them hanging on a limp. For a weapon that is this slow to use and inspired by real anti-tank technology, it's disappointing that an anti-tank weapon can't actually just destroy tanks.
Orbital Gatling Barrage - Arguably the most unused stratagem next to the Smoke Strikes. I'm almost certain everybody uses it just once and goes "Eh, I prefer this other thing." Improvements: Increase the rate of fire of the gatling barrage as well as the total amount of rounds fired, increase the affected area (not the explosion radius, just the spread of the bullets) and increase damage on direct impact. Reasoning: While currently mediocre, I believe the idea behind the Orbital Gatling Barrage is to be a medium entity handler. It's a suppression tool that's made to clear out light-medium units while damaging heavier units, if not kill them if you get a few lucky hits in. That being said, as it is, the Gatling Barrage doesn't fire fast enough to have the desired effect, and the damage is too low to deal significant damage required to actually clear medium sized targets clearly, like Warriors, Hive Guards and Hive Commanders.
Orbital Railcannon Strike - Despite its popular usage, I still believe this stratagem could be made better and more fitting of a playstyle that is more skirmishy and hit-and-run. Improvements: Reduce the cooldown to 120s (108s with Ship Module upgrade) Reasoning: While it's an amazing anti-heavy stratagem, that's almost exclusively what it is. It's a single, high-powered shot that will usually 1-shot almost everything it shoots. However, the cooldown is far too high to be useful when compared alternatives that can do the same effect just as fast, more consistently and/or with less hassle over a cooldown. Reducing the cooldown makes the Stratagem fit more in builds that are more reactive than proactive, as I believe it was intended to be.
Orbital Smoke Strike & Eagle Smoke Strike - If I had to guess, both of these are probably the most unused stratagems in the game. This is by virtue of the fact that they really don't work as people would expect them to. Improvements: Increase the power of the smoke strikes by confusing enemies when it lands. If the smoke strike blocks enemy LOS on Helldivers (players), then it should stop them from acting against players until LOS is reestablished. This includes shooting for Automatons, and chasing for Terminids. Reasoning: I don't think you need to be a mega-genius to understand that Smoke Screens are mostly use to cover approaches and retreats. They're extremely defensive by design and help to confuse enemies more than anything. By that virtue, I believe that the intended usage of this stratagem is to be both proactive and reactive, to help players get into range on an objective, or escape a tricky situation.
Eagle 110MM Rocket Pods - Another stratagem that is deceptively strong, but in practice is actually almost useless. Improvements: Increase the accuracy of the Rocket Pods so that they're practically guided onto the target, rather than being a high-powered and highly focused strafing run. Add an aiming reticle similar to the Railcannon so players can expect where the rockets are aiming for. Reasoning: While the damage is currently quite insane (it can 1-shot a Bile Titan), the reliability of this stratagem is extremely poor. It almost always misses, is incredibly hard to actually land on a desired target and there's no actual indication of where your rockets are going. Improving responsiveness by making the rockets more accurate and giving players an idea of where the rockets are going would make this stratagem more popular, if a little bit overpowered unless they nerf the damage so it can't just 1-shot Bile Titans.
Shield Generator Relay - Next to the Smoke Strikes, I believe this is one of the least used stratagems in the game, and for good reason. Improvements: Increase the duration from 30s to 60s if we're feeling ballsy) and give it the ability to block enemies from entering the shield. Reasoning: The Shield Generator Relay feels to me like a reactive "oh shit" stratagem, used particularly in defensive missions or in situations where you really need a spot to reload, heal and return fire without being at risk of getting killed in the process. Increasing the duration of the shield and giving it the ability to block enemies would go a long way in improving its usability and situational utility.
Anti-Personnel Minefield & Incendiary Mines - While I don't think either of these stratagems are extremely bad, I think their usage is just generally confused in the eyes of many who tried to use them, besides the fact that they're amazing at killing teammates more than they are at killing enemies. Improvements: Increase the APM's direct damage to enemies that step on mines, while keeping the explosion damage similar, if reduced. Increase the Incendiary Mines' explosion radius to cover more enemies in flame, and increase the flame DOT slightly if necessary. Reasoning: Now I'm not sure what the developers' intention was with these two, but here's my idea: the Anti-Personnel Minefield should be an amazing anti-medium stratagem. Giving it increased direct damage on explosions can make it an amazing stratagem against swarms of Warriors, Hive Guards and Hive Commanders, while less desirable against lighter units. On the flip side, Incendiary Mines should have a greater blast radius to increase its effectiveness against lighter units, given that they are the weakest to being burnt to death.
"Guard Dog" - Yes, the Liberator one. The reason I think people use Rover over the 'normal' variant is because Rover is just more efficient: it doesn't reload as often, it can kill enemies just as well as the 'normal' Guard Dog can, and it's less at risk of accidentally killing you instantly. Improvements: Increase the "Guard Dog" weapon's armor-piercing capacity and increase its damage, giving it the ability to kill Hive Guards and Hive Commanders more quickly. Remove its ability to lock on to light enemies other than Hunters. Reasoning: Very similar to my argument about the Anti-Personnel Minefield and Incendiary Mines, I believe that both "Guard Dogs" should fill niche roles. The Rover should fill the anti-light niche, where it deals with scavengers, spitters and hunters most effectively, but struggles against Warriors and Hive Guards. Meanwhile, the 'normal' variant has increased firepower against medium enemies, but lacks the lock-on required to shoot lighter enemies, so you can focus on taking are of those.
Rocket Sentry - Unfortunately, this little guy suffers too much in underrelevance compared to the bigger, badder sentries. Compared to the Gatling Sentry and the Autocannon Sentry, it just lacks the fire rate, turn speed and general firepower of both to be worthwhile. Improvements: Rework the Rocket Sentry to have lock-on rockets. Reasoning: I don't believe the Rocket Sentry can compare to the Autocannon Sentry and Gatling Sentry. It has a better turning rate than the Autocannon Sentry, but lacks its insane firepower. It also doesn't have a fire rate fast enough to rival the Gatling Sentry, so there's nothing special there; it's just a worse version of the two. My idea is to give it a role that is direly needed in Helldivers 2 right now: Anti-Air. Giving the rockets the ability to track their target will give it the ability to deal with those pesky gunships and shriekers better than any other turret currently can. It also increases its accuracy and will potentially make it more useful in general situations where sentries tend to be less than desirable in accuracy.
I'm avoiding to mention the Ballistic Shield Backpack because... really, this thing doesn't belong in the game.
Let me know what you agree with, disagree with, really like or really dislike about my ideas. I'd love to have a proper discussion with some of you.
Also, yes, I'm completely aware that all of this is hypothetical and very unlikely to make it into the game. Like I said at the beginning, I just like sharing things.

"Guard Dog" - Yes, the Liberator one. The reason I think people use Rover over the 'normal' variant is because Rover is just more efficient: it doesn't reload as often, it can kill enemies just as well as the 'normal' Guard Dog can, and it's less at risk of accidentally killing you instantly. Improvements: Increase the "Guard Dog" weapon's armor-piercing capacity and increase its damage, giving it the ability to kill Hive Guards and Hive Commanders more quickly. Remove its ability to lock on to light enemies other than Hunters. Reasoning: Very similar to my argument about the Anti-Personnel Minefield and Incendiary Mines, I believe that both "Guard Dogs" should fill niche roles. The Rover should fill the anti-light niche, where it deals with scavengers, spitters and hunters most effectively, but struggles against Warriors and Hive Guards. Meanwhile, the 'normal' variant has increased firepower against medium enemies, but lacks the lock-on required to shoot lighter enemies, so you can focus on taking are of those.
Rocket Sentry - Unfortunately, this little guy suffers too much in underrelevance compared to the bigger, badder sentries. Compared to the Gatling Sentry and the Autocannon Sentry, it just lacks the fire rate, turn speed and general firepower of both to be worthwhile. Improvements: Rework the Rocket Sentry to have lock-on rockets. Reasoning: I don't believe the Rocket Sentry can compare to the Autocannon Sentry and Gatling Sentry. It has a better turning rate than the Autocannon Sentry, but lacks its insane firepower. It also doesn't have a fire rate fast enough to rival the Gatling Sentry, so there's nothing special there; it's just a worse version of the two. My idea is to give it a role that is direly needed in Helldivers 2 right now: Anti-Air. Giving the rockets the ability to track their target will give it the ability to deal with those pesky gunships and shriekers better than any other turret currently can. It also increases its accuracy and will potentially make it more useful in general situations where sentries tend to be less than desirable in accuracy.
I'm avoiding to mention the Ballistic Shield Backpack because... really, this thing doesn't belong in the game.
Let me know what you agree with, disagree with, really like or really dislike about my ideas. I'd love to have a proper discussion with some of you.
Also, yes, I'm completely aware that all of this is hypothetical and very unlikely to make it into the game. Like I said at the beginning, I just like sharing things.

Hi, new here. Have had an idea for a story for a while but most of my writing was erased so had to start over. What do you think of the intro below, is this something you'd be interested in continuing to read?
Its the year 3002, the remnants of Earth are but the dunes. Extraction of the planet has caused life to dissipate due to drought and the death of organisms living within the soil. This lack of life within the soil's ecosystem has caused dead space, the sand or dunes as we know them. However, this isn't what the Federal League of Alternative Government or F.L.A.G would have you believe. I know. I'm nothing but a Rogue to them, pushed into the outskirts of society due to a mutation caused several years back when the Earth began to lose its moisture, causing dry air. A virus struck at that time and the respiratory systems of several individuals failed. Some say it was a way for the Earth to fight to stay alive, after all it is a living organism. Yet, others, F.L.A.G, say it was created by Rogues themselves to drain the Earth and society of its resources. Funny. I don't ever remember wanting to be a Rogue. But being a Rogue now is the only thing that makes sense. For how do we think the virus truly inhabited the planet? Should we believe everything the government tells us? Or should we begin to listen to the stories of Rogues and how they survived the infection? I know I was never the same again. Something only a chemical could create. Organic? Not likely. Therefore, could it truly come from the Earth?My name is Cephyr. I am one of the last to be alive from the Dry Age. I witnessed the disappearance of ecosystems that lived upon the Earth. For this reason alone I have been in hiding. For unbeknownst to civilian life, F.L.A.G is eradicating the history of the Dry Age. For good reason. Can we really allow society to know that the government destroyed the natural resources of our planet? The Earth is not what it once was. The air itself can be poisonous. Too many gasses flow within the Earth's atmosphere unlike times before when botanicals would cleanse the air. Carbon Monoxide is heavy and prevalent. And for me, or any Rogue, my eyes are a dead give away. I can pretend I can't breathe the oxygen to mask myself with others, but only the eyes of a Rogue turn golden when gas levels reach above a certain amount, the red zone. For this reason F.L.A.G is also on the hunt. Why is it that we survived and mutated? What is the mystery of the yellow eyes? But more so, why does our epidermis shed when moisture touches us? That is a mystery even still to me.
We're alien. And anything in this world that is unknown is cause for fear. Because anything that can create confusion can create fear. And anything that can create fear, has power. A power F.L.A.G does not want utilized. A power of truth that F.L.A.G does not want realized. For what really is a Rogue but an evolution of mankind. Some say we were made by the Earth itself. Some call us guardians. Others say we are a menace. Guess it depends who you ask. Or what truth they know of the Dry Age.

 | I had visited a family friend's place to provide some medical care to their dog who had injured his leg and while I was there I noticed they had a snake too. I took it out of it's enclosure and noticed so many things wrong about her. She had a really bad shed, it was coming off in patches and wasn't being removed quick enough, drying out in places. She also was wheezing, which I first assumed might have been a respiratory infection. She was freezing to the touch as well as she was kept next to an air conditioner and she was covered in mites, which was probably the reason her shed was bad as well as being slightly underweight as she was fed small mice once a week. I asked the owner if I could take it and he eventually agreed to let me have it. Quick question for the vets (ok not super quick)…I am currently fostering the sweetest, most chill lab mix dog (and in the process of adopting her bc she is so well behaved). She was found on the streets down south after giving birth to a litter of puppies. That was months ago, and she is a healthy 3 year old (ish) pup. She did have heartworms though being a street dog. Shes had two treatments so far, the last one being a week and a half ago. The vet prescribed prednisone for her 2x a day for a week, and then it gradually decreases but she’s on it for weeks. She seems to be reacting fine to the treatment, but the prednisone does not seem good for her. She’s peeing everywhere (which is normal I know but also quite tough to manage when I have to go to work). But bigger concern is it makes her very restless when she’s supposed to be recovering, and she is more agitated and naughty lol. she usually never sheds but her fur is falling out on the prednisone.
I called the vet and spoke to him through a secretary and he basically said keep her on it for another few weeks at a lower dose. But is it really necessary? We're keen photographers, but can't always commit to a night camping/bivvying when we know we're in for a rough night's sleep and have to work the next day! We're looking into a camper with a fixed double bed, space for the dogs, and also room enough to sit with laptops so we can work remotely, but without the full kitchen facilities etc. Given the bespoke sort of set-up we've talked ourselves into, we're looking at some of the conversion companies and expect that would set us back the best part of £50,000. It would be a big investment for us. As part of our research, I've been trying to find some second hand examples of those sorts of conversions being sold on (Quirky Campers is the most useful site I've found so far, but I've also checked Facebook, eBay, GumTree) but I've not found (m)any examples. I'm guessing probably because once people have shelled out for something like that they hold on to it! Have people seen many examples of these kinds of campers? Any recollection as to whether they sell pretty quickly, or whether they struggle to sell because they're mad expensive!? If it's looking like we might be walking into something expensive we'll struggle to sell on then we investigate alternative plans, but if they hold their value pretty well then it's a bit less risky.

So, I just wanted to go through my arduous journey of the last few years and get y'all's thoughts/just vent and tell the story of my proverbial diagnosis roulette.
This is going to be a literal wall of text and I am leaving so so so much out, so please bear with me.
Outside of my childhood of being considered "sickly" by my family and friends, I never really felt too far outside of the realm of normalcy. Sure, I had gotten diagnosed with GERD (eosinophilic esophagitis) in high school which seemed to explain all of the stomach issues I always had, it didn't feel too debilitating or difficult. The only odd thing was sometimes sleeping 12+ hours and still being tired but I figured that was normal. However, I distinctly remember being evaluated for Marfan's syndrome as a kid but being told that my brother and I didn't quite meet the criteria and genetic testing was too expensive at the time.
Fast forward past high school, and I graduated undergrad and got my first job. But then I just kept getting sick once a week, over and over, until I finally quit that job. I attributed it to stress or lack of sleep. Figured what I needed was a change of scenery, so I got certified and went overseas to teach English. Frustratingly, that only lasted 3 months. I couldn't seem to do it despite my working 60+ hour weeks trying to make it work.
Came back home to a new job after looking for months. 6 months later, I went on medical short-term disability. I was quite literally dozing off driving to work every morning and said enough was enough. I didn't want to hurt anyone and my mental health was in the tank. Half a year later, it was called obstructive sleep apnea. A year, a CPAP, BiPap, and finally ASV machine later, I am getting treated for what turned out to be central sleep apnea. This was 3 years after and I had returned to school to try and get a masters in public health. I was finally feeling like I was getting back to a healthy normal. My mental health and ability to focus dramatically improved. I even got diagnosed with ADHD, and that was like a lightbulb moment too.
I was finally feeling great. Never felt better, was excelling in my epidemiolgy program and happy that I found my niche. However, life had different plans. It began with a bang, where I severely sprained my right wrist playing with my dog. Despite the intense pain, I was still able to move it decently well so the ortho didn't believe it was too bad. I had to go back twice and they scheduled an MRI. Full thickness tear of 2/3 portions of the scapholunate ligament, and a minor perforation of the TFCC. Lasted two weeks in the small wrist cast they put on, but couldn't deal with the pain. I did occupational therapy and got my first OT saying I could be hypermobile. At some point during that journey, I sprained my left wrist just as bad. That's when they sent me to a rheumatologist.
I started getting incredibly fatigued (back to the levels of pre-treatment of my sleep apnea) and began to experience intense pain in my joints, along with muscle spasms. I sprained my ankles bad enough to need PT for a few weeks. None of my blood work ever showed anything and everything else never panned out so they said it was anxiety and fibromyalgia. I gave up but knew it was wrong. I said screw it, I refuse to let someone tell me this is just anxiety. I know anxiety, I know what it does, and it doesn't cause joint pain and strains all of the time. The celebrex they gave me only worked to an extent. So, I went back to the rheumatologist and said I don't want pain killers, I just need a diagnosis that makes sense. Due to the low back, ankle, hip, shoulder, elbow, and neck pain they said it was non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA). Then I went on cimzia until I graduated. It seemed to help but never for long. I could barely do school, and was worried I would be disabled and unable to work.
Came home and the rheumatologist here and they took me off of everything because there was no objective proof. My xrays were normal, MRI's didn't show joint degradation, and my blood work didn't show inflammation/any markers for any of the possible autoimmune conditions. I literally had to get lucky before this doctor believed me (after 3 months) and came in with my elbow swollen. He immediately said it was seronegative asymmetric rheumatoid arthritis. It is already somewhat uncommon to be seronegative, but asymmetric on top of that? But I finally had a diagnosis again, so I just accepted it.
I got lucky and found a work-from-home job during this time. My fatigue got a little better. However, nothing ever worked for long, not the methotrexate, prednisone, or Humira they put me on. The Rinvoq I am on now doesn't seem to stop flares either. I kept spraining my wrists, ankles, shoulders, elbows, knees, whatever. I kept asking for help with the pain, asking why my muscles hurt so bad and kept spasming, asking just for anything to help. Neurologist cleared me. Pysch said it wasn't a mental health issue. Doctor after doctor after doctor and nothing seemed to tie everything together. I asked them to check for hypermobility, they said I didn't have it after a half-hearted attempt. I looked into everything, thinking I was going crazy, and constantly being told I was by doctors, friends, and family. It hurt so dang much feeling like I was the only person advocating for me.
Throughout this all, I was in and out of PT. Once for my wrists again and once for my shoulder and neck. The wrist PT said I needed to get looked at for hypermobility but I was just so tired of doctors and had asked both rheumatologists so far. Then months later, the PTs for my neck and shoulders said so as well. I said screw it, and scheduled a dermatologist thinking that was enough. 6 months and right before my appointment I got COVID so I had to cancel. Another few months and I am done with neck and shoulder PT but never felt "healed". They told me to request a special PT from my rheumatologist, one who dealt specifically with hypermobility because they all believed I had hypermobile EDS. I was finally done with questioning whether or not the rheumatologist got it right, with the constant negative test results, no inflammation ever, and continual constant pain. I convinced the rheumatologist to send me to this new PT.
I went in, and this lady immediately starts going on and on about things I can't do. I was confused, and asked "don't we need to do any tests?" She basically said I can already tell you're hypermobile. You held out your arm earlier and your elbows went hypermobile. She double-checked my knees and had me stand, where they both bent too far backwards. My thumbs could touch my forearm. Someone finally knew what to look for and believed me. She said it was definitely hypermobility, likely hypermobile EDS, said she would send her report to my rheumatologist and asked me to get a referral to a doctor with experience in this disease.
So now we are here. I am still struggling with everything, and funnily enough am looking for "high-top" shoes after a recommendation from that PT. I am waiting for my second appointment with them and got referred to the docs I need. I want to cry because it seems like I finally found the missing link. I also want to scream because despite all the years of being called a hypochondriac, my symptoms were anxiety, and all of the random sprains and rolled ankles since childhood, I feel like I am stuck with being in pain. I just feel lost.
Is it crazy to believe that the rheumatologists had it wrong? I remember back to feeling a pop in the same elbow that got me diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis but didn't attribute it to anything because that was normal. I even told the rheumatologist and he said it likely wasn't a sprain because I could move it. I am sure it was now a sprain. Everything makes sense the more I read about this disease. The links to GERD, sleep-apnea, flat feet, constant rolled ankles, bad eyesight, double-jointed in my fingers, and so much more. Is it possible that the blood work was telling the truth? Can there be hope that despite my pain, I won't have to further damage my body and immune system with all of these rheumatologic drugs? I don't know if I can muster the strength anymore to advocate for myself and bring this up with the rheumatologist again. I am afraid of the young 'healthy' male stereotype and am so done with doctors who don't believe me.

I was quite literally dozing off driving to work every morning and said enough was enough. I didn't want to hurt anyone and my mental health was in the tank. Half a year later, it was called obstructive sleep apnea. A year, a CPAP, BiPap, and finally ASV machine later, I am getting treated for what turned out to be central sleep apnea. This was 3 years after and I had returned to school to try and get a masters in public health. I was finally feeling like I was getting back to a healthy normal. My mental health and ability to focus dramatically improved. I even got diagnosed with ADHD, and that was like a lightbulb moment too.
I was finally feeling great. Never felt better, was excelling in my epidemiolgy program and happy that I found my niche. However, life had different plans. It began with a bang, where I severely sprained my right wrist playing with my dog. Despite the intense pain, I was still able to move it decently well so the ortho didn't believe it was too bad. I had to go back twice and they scheduled an MRI. Full thickness tear of 2/3 portions of the scapholunate ligament, and a minor perforation of the TFCC. Lasted two weeks in the small wrist cast they put on, but couldn't deal with the pain. I did occupational therapy and got my first OT saying I could be hypermobile. At some point during that journey, I sprained my left wrist just as bad. That's when they sent me to a rheumatologist.
I started getting incredibly fatigued (back to the levels of pre-treatment of my sleep apnea) and began to experience intense pain in my joints, along with muscle spasms. I sprained my ankles bad enough to need PT for a few weeks. None of my blood work ever showed anything and everything else never panned out so they said it was anxiety and fibromyalgia. I gave up but knew it was wrong. I said screw it, I refuse to let someone tell me this is just anxiety. I know anxiety, I know what it does, and it doesn't cause joint pain and strains all of the time. The celebrex they gave me only worked to an extent. So, I went back to the rheumatologist and said I don't want pain killers, I just need a diagnosis that makes sense. Due to the low back, ankle, hip, shoulder, elbow, and neck pain they said it was non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA). Then I went on cimzia until I graduated. It seemed to help but never for long. I could barely do school, and was worried I would be disabled and unable to work.
Came home and the rheumatologist here and they took me off of everything because there was no objective proof. My xrays were normal, MRI's didn't show joint degradation, and my blood work didn't show inflammation/any markers for any of the possible autoimmune conditions. I literally had to get lucky before this doctor believed me (after 3 months) and came in with my elbow swollen. He immediately said it was seronegative asymmetric rheumatoid arthritis. It is already somewhat uncommon to be seronegative, but asymmetric on top of that? But I finally had a diagnosis again, so I just accepted it.
I got lucky and found a work-from-home job during this time. My fatigue got a little better. However, nothing ever worked for long, not the methotrexate, prednisone, or Humira they put me on. The Rinvoq I am on now doesn't seem to stop flares either. I kept spraining my wrists, ankles, shoulders, elbows, knees, whatever. I kept asking for help with the pain, asking why my muscles hurt so bad and kept spasming, asking just for anything to help. Neurologist cleared me. Pysch said it wasn't a mental health issue. Doctor after doctor after doctor and nothing seemed to tie everything together. I asked them to check for hypermobility, they said I didn't have it after a half-hearted attempt. I looked into everything, thinking I was going crazy, and constantly being told I was by doctors, friends, and family. It hurt so dang much feeling like I was the only person advocating for me.
Throughout this all, I was in and out of PT. Once for my wrists again and once for my shoulder and neck. The wrist PT said I needed to get looked at for hypermobility but I was just so tired of doctors and had asked both rheumatologists so far. Then months later, the PTs for my neck and shoulders said so as well. I said screw it, and scheduled a dermatologist thinking that was enough. 6 months and right before my appointment I got COVID so I had to cancel. Another few months and I am done with neck and shoulder PT but never felt "healed". They told me to request a special PT from my rheumatologist, one who dealt specifically with hypermobility because they all believed I had hypermobile EDS. I was finally done with questioning whether or not the rheumatologist got it right, with the constant negative test results, no inflammation ever, and continual constant pain. I convinced the rheumatologist to send me to this new PT.
I went in, and this lady immediately starts going on and on about things I can't do. I was confused, and asked "don't we need to do any tests?" She basically said I can already tell you're hypermobile. You held out your arm earlier and your elbows went hypermobile. She double-checked my knees and had me stand, where they both bent too far backwards. My thumbs could touch my forearm. Someone finally knew what to look for and believed me. She said it was definitely hypermobility, likely hypermobile EDS, said she would send her report to my rheumatologist and asked me to get a referral to a doctor with experience in this disease.
So now we are here. I am still struggling with everything, and funnily enough am looking for "high-top" shoes after a recommendation from that PT. I am waiting for my second appointment with them and got referred to the docs I need. I want to cry because it seems like I finally found the missing link. I also want to scream because despite all the years of being called a hypochondriac, my symptoms were anxiety, and all of the random sprains and rolled ankles since childhood, I feel like I am stuck with being in pain. I just feel lost.
Is it crazy to believe that the rheumatologists had it wrong? I remember back to feeling a pop in the same elbow that got me diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis but didn't attribute it to anything because that was normal. I even told the rheumatologist and he said it likely wasn't a sprain because I could move it. I am sure it was now a sprain. Everything makes sense the more I read about this disease. The links to GERD, sleep-apnea, flat feet, constant rolled ankles, bad eyesight, double-jointed in my fingers, and so much more. Is it possible that the blood work was telling the truth? Can there be hope that despite my pain, I won't have to further damage my body and immune system with all of these rheumatologic drugs? I don't know if I can muster the strength anymore to advocate for myself and bring this up with the rheumatologist again. I am afraid of the young 'healthy' male stereotype and am so done with doctors who don't believe me.
Honestly, any advice, stories, resources, or whatever yall have I would love to hear. I just needed to rant and write my thoughts down. If you read this far, thank you. Also, if you have any suggestions for high tops I am open to receiving them!

Here's some background on my approximately 11yo male chihuahua mix: submitted by Alternative_Appeal to OpenDogTraining [link] [comments] I adopted him from a shelter in 2016 when he was about 3yo (they didn't know where he came from or anything about him, the vet aged him based on his teeth). I actually chose him because he was the quietest, calmest dog out of like 20 in a pen. He looked like he just wanted out of there so badly and I fell in love right away. He had to be neutered before we brought him home, so he officially joined us a few days later. I already had a 6yo male bichon/shihtzu mix at home but he's always gotten along with other dogs and people so no issues there (neutered as a puppy). It didn't take long for me to realize the chi was severely traumatized before I got him. Every move I made (literally repositioning my arm) or pillow falling from the couch, or loud noise sent him into hiding for about 20 minutes. I had a doggie door to the outside where I successfully trained him to go potty, but he would bring his poop back inside to eat when I wasn't looking. Vet said this was sign of past abuse/neglect. He would also throw up all the time, and I eventually figured out he needed limited ingredient grain free food and all this weirdness around eating poop and puking up food stopped for the most part. He still throws up after drinking too much water or eating too fast. We do our best to keep him from doing this, but sometimes it happens when we aren't around. I believe this may have something to do with his anxiety around past food insecurity. He absolutely hated going on walks because every car that passed sent him under a bush, shaking, staying as low to the ground as possible. We would go on not busy streets in our neighborhood but cars still passed and it stressed him out a lot. Because he was around so many dogs and calm when I adopted him, and he got along fine with my dog, I figured he would love the dog park as an alternative to walks. But the very first time there, after about 10 minutes of everything being fine, another dog started chasing him playfully and then other dogs joined in and he was absolutely terrified. He is still terrified of the dog park since that incident (hence we dont go anymore), but loves all the dogs under a certain size he's ever met in a more intimate setting. He will NOT get near big dogs no matter what. Thankfully, he's gotten much better over the years about walks but he has serious leash aggression and barks at people and dogs. We're still actively working on this. So I know now that I made several mistakes with my traumatized chi early on because I didn't understand he needed very different treatment from my other dog. He is afraid of pretty much everything under the sun and didn't trust me enough for the first couple of years to actually be able to successfully train him. I did crate training and that helped a bit, but his fear mindset was really strong. I just did my best to keep him as happy and healthy as possible even though I could tell he still didn't trust me. I always thought this lack of trust was what was holding us back and did my best to be patient as the trust built. Many years later we are very securely bonded, he is taking anxiety medication, but there are still a few trauma-like behaviors I can't seem to redirect: (1) He is better at focusing on me and redirecting on walks, but if a big dog passes I don't exist and he goes crazy. (2) We recently moved to a house where the backyard overlooks a park. He barks at people when they are just sitting there, like 100 yards away, not even doing anything. People can't even come near our fence because of a big hill, but he hates on them anyway. (3) The biggest issue-- he hates when we have new people over. If he really knows someone, he loves them. He's a people-loving dog, but new people terrify him. It takes like 5+ times of being around someone for at least an hour for him to not freak out at you upon entering. By freaking out I mean barking incessantly and jumping up on you, no biting. At times, we will think we passed the barrier because he will be cuddling with that person on the couch, but if they make a sudden movement or stand up it's back to terrorizing them. So we clearly have not had much company over since 2016 🫠 but now have this big beautiful house we want to share with friends and family. Is going back to crate training the way here? I welcome any and all suggestions for getting my Chi to a point where he isn't afraid of something constantly. I know he isn't afraid of me anymore, I am a safety zone for him, but I still can't help him past a lot of anxieties. We have considered a private professional trainer if necessary, but maybe there's something else I'm missing? Thanks for reading this far 😊❤️ |

Hey everyone! I created this group after struggling with DE for over 2 years. In those two years, my condition would fade and come back and was very mild. Until about February 2023, then it really ramped up and never went away. It only seemed to get worse and worse and was spreading very rapidly from the tip of my right ring finger to eventually my right palm and spreading far in attempts to affect other fingers.
During this time, I was doing constant research and looking for any form of relief. I turned myself into a human guinea pig and would go on to try countless things I had read online. Although it is important to note: I never used any topical steroid creams or pill forms such a prednisone, triamcinolone, etc.
When my condition was at its worst, I came across this website . I followed the protocol twice (along with an extremely strict diet). I was unable to get the Itraconazole medication in my country and I also altered the vitamin A dosing after doing my own research on the potentially dangerous affects. After doing the protocol, I saw a lot of improvements but the condition would relapse whenever I ate something "wrong" or sometimes just for an unknown reason it would come back worse. If I stopped taking the Nystatin, it would come back. It was clear to me that this protocol helped me a lot, has worked for several others, but was not fully curing me. It could have been the missing Itraconazole and/or the lower vitamin A dosing but those were two things I personally was not willing to compromise on after doing my own research on both.
I ended up finally deciding to try and find a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor near me. I had done a lot of research on Chinese Medicine and its ability to cure eczema, including DE. I found this website and decided I would commit to giving it a try. I booked an appointment for Oct. 20, 2023. When I went, she was so knowledgable and kind. She gave me extremely easy and practical steps to follow but did inform me that because I had dyshidrosis for 2 years or more, the condition is considered chronic and will take longer to heal.
I decided to give it a try and after just 14 days of taking the herbs she gave me, I had seen significant improvements in my hand. I continued with the herbs in 2 week treatments, I would go in for a follow-up, she would assess the progress and then adjust the herbal blend accordingly. I did this for about 3 months. My hand was improving extremely quickly and I am still experiencing last effects to this day (5/19/2024). As of today, my hand is about 98% healed. I can still tell where the affected areas are because I have seen them for 2 years straight but at first glance, my hand actually looks to be a completely normal, healed hand. I can still experience flares if I expose my hand to chemicals, too much hot water, or if I consume too much spicy food but aside from that, my hand does great! I highly recommend anyone with this condition, normal eczema, or any skin condition to seek out a TCM doctor as soon as possible and get treatment right away. The sooner, the better!
