Some time ago my favorite ice cream shop went out of business and today i discovered that they are back but with a different name but they still have the amazing homemade ice cream and I just got some and I am remembering all of the great memories I have from this place and how it has been around since my family moved into the town we live in back in 2013 when I was six.

2024.05.20 01:36 jadekeffer Chocolate Covered Strawberry gelato

Chocolate Covered Strawberry gelato
Some of you may remember the tillamook special batch ice creams. This flavor, chocolate covered strawberry gelato, was my favorite frozen dairy product in the world. Then, they discontinued it. So, I present my homemade version. I boiled strawberries with a handful of sugar and splash of lemon juice, blended them when they were soft, and let it cook until it seemed thick enough(it wasn't, it turned out a little icy, but at least it's tasty. Is there a way to make a swirl like this not icy? I'm new to this). I made a ganache, using less cream so it'd be a little firmer and I could cut it into chunks. Not sure if that was necessary, as it came out a tad grainy. Again, still tasty. This was the base: https://www.savorysimple.net/mascarpone-gelato-recipe/
I churned this in a basic cuisinart machine, not sure of the model name but it's one where you freeze the bowl. Overall, it's not perfect, but it's surprisingly close, and hopefully I'll find ways to make a better batch!

2024.05.20 00:01 ExternalTangents A solo visit to Tiki-Ti

A solo visit to Tiki-Ti
I was staying nearby in LA for a couple nights last week, so I went to Tiki/Ti alone on a Friday night. It was my first time there, but based on online recs, I arrived about 20 minutes prior to opening and was second in line to get in. When they opened up, I grabbed a corner seat next to a dude who was already sitting and sipping on a drink.
That guy happened to be Anders Anderson, who made the hanging lamps in there (as well as some other decor, like the design of the underside of the bar). He’s a regular and good friend of the owner and staff and was happy to strike up a conversation. In talking to him, I also got to talk to Mike Sr, current owner and the son of the founder of Tiki-Ti, who told some awesome stories about the place and its history. Those guys were super generous with their time and conversation, and happy to chat with me about it all for at least an hour, probably more.
Of course, the drinks themselves were fantastic too. Really cool to get to visit a place with such a direct line back to the origins of tiki bars, and get a taste of what those original recipes were like. It was pretty endearing that the glassware was plain and simple, and the garnishes were all the same. It highlighted the way the layering of the ingredients (including the ice and foam) was distinct for each drink. And the drinks did a great job of being tropical and interesting without being too sweet.
My drinks (pictured in order): 1. Rays mistake 2. Zombie 3. Navy Grog 4. Bayanihan
All-around 10/10 experience.

Been Looking Forward to This Week for Weeks
This was a six pack with 2 of each cookie you see here, but I edited out the already ravaged cookies at the bottom as I took the picture late.
French Toast: Total disappointment. I would’ve much preferred a cookie over a cake - that’s really the sole reason I didn’t like it. I know it isn’t for everyone but I go to Crumbl for that delicious underbaked cookie texture and this wasn’t close. Nothing special about it all for me.
Wedding Cake: Pleasant surprise. I’m not a fan of cream cheese icing being put on everything in existence. However, the raspberry flavor is so heavy here that I really didn’t taste any cream cheese. The icing flavor was like a strong raspberry yogurt and the pearls have a lovely crunch to them.
Pistachio Gelato: Exactly what I expected and I love it. The icing is definitely just pistachio pudding but that’s what I assumed they’d do and I’m good with it. I absolutely love pistachio flavor, just let me say that. The base was closer to a shortbread or actual pie crust than a sugar cookie and I found it perfect in flavor and consistency. More dense than the chocolate base on the original brownie pistachio cookie, which I’d forever wished they’d make a non-chocolate version of.
My favorites are split between the wedding cake and pistachio, but I’d maybe place the pistachio just a teensy bit ahead. Maybe.

2024.05.19 22:57 violetredfilter Scattershot Reviews (BHT, Osmo, Sorce)

Hey I ordered a ton of perfume during a mental breakdown. Here are my thoughts on some of them.
— Black-Hearted Tart —
We Fell In Love In October (Fluffy, hot off the griddle pancakes topped with butter and smothered in golden maple syrup. Accompanied by a side of spiced baked apples with notes of nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger): Buttercream, cinnamon yankee candle, nothing. That’s the extent of my journey. Honestly, it’s fine, it’s a very inoffensive fall scent, if you want to smell like you’ve crushed a craft store on your wrist it’s great, but a lot is missing. If notes are a choir, the cinnamon has a megaphone. Honestly, I’ve been looking for a good pancake or waffle scent for a while, and this misses the mark. 3/5, not bad at all, but not was I was looking for and definitely not fit to wear yet in the Hell Summer I have coming up.
Potential Practical Uses:
Boys Wanna Be Her (Uplifting basil and bergamot add freshness. Enhanced with an earthy blend of buddha wood and oak moss. Tonka bean and white patchouli evoke a bohemian vibe): Boys Wanna Be Clean too, apparently, because the crux of this frag is SOAP, lots of it, and nothing but it. I have no clue where it’s coming from based on the notes, but it’s undeniably suds. It smells like those industrial strength white bars. Like “I just worked a twelve hour shift and the first thing I did when I got home was scrub myself down so hard my nose forgot what work smelled like.” This would probably be great for layering, come to think of it, but I like “violently clean” scents and will probably wear it on its own anyway. 3.5/5 if you’re like me and soap is a comfort scent, or if you’re some kind of Patron Saint of Laundry Detergent, you’d probably like this too.
Potential Practical Uses:
— OSMOFOLIA —
Finally A Star (The glitz of cardamom and sparkling grapefruit stars, outer space ozone, dreamy tuberose, searing gunpowder, and a ham hock for a head): I’m so mad that this is good. The joke with my IRL friends regarding this order was “you know I wasn’t in a good place when I made this purchase because I got ham perfume.” And I'm the joke now, because I ended up liking it a lot. Like, this is currently the only Osmo frag that has ever worked on me, and I’ve tried a sizable chunk of their library. (Seriously, I was going to include another perfume of theirs to compare and contrast, but everything I said felt too mean.) To make matters worse, you can definitely smell the ham and the gunpowder in the beginning! It’s in the background behind a really juicy grapefruit note, but it’s present. Part of the way this perfume was sold to me were reviews that assured me the ham was more of a bacon note, but no. This is honey baked ham. Deli-core. But the grapefruit note is so juicy that it takes over and makes it manageable. It’s pretty and weird and vaguely delicious and I’m worried someone will try to take a bite out of my facemeat when I wear this, but I will wear it. 3.5/5, I guess?
Potential Practical Uses:
— Sorcellerie Apothecary—
Cake For Breakfast (Birthday cake, ripe mango, pineapple, coffee, maple syrup, and a hint of cardamom): Okay, I get it, coffee doesn’t like my skin. This is a bitter burnt caramel on me, though according to my friends with working noses, it reads more vanilla to them. I wish I could get what they got: as the day goes on, it started pulling borderline savory on me. It’s like… okay, you know when you make pancakes and little drops of batter get stuck to the pan? And then they stay there and slowly burn into little balls of ash? It smells like the process of that happening, but someone is chugging coffee syrup. I can’t say I got the mango or pineapple, which I was kinda pulling for; there’s a possibility it was there in the opening, but I also could have been hallucinating considering how fast it vanished. I’m giving it a 2/5, I can’t fully say it’s bad, especially because the drydown is okay if you like your caramel overdone, but I don’t think I’ll be keeping this.
Potential Practical Uses:
Your Girlfriend Is A Badass (Yellow cake with fudge icing, oakmoss, Himalayan cedar, forest floor): By all accounts, this shouldn’t have worked. I hate chocolate as a perfume note, because it tends to go tootsie roll on me, and I’m not the biggest fan of yellow cake because vanilla is a death note, and “forest floor” implies dirt, which I’m also not an enjoyer of. This is all to say I honestly don’t know what possessed me to buy this, but I’m extremely glad it did because I’m in love. When they say fudge icing, they mean it: it didn’t go cheap or artificial on me, it was honest to god chocolate the whole time. I know “I wanted to lick my wrist” is a cliche in reviews, but it did smell like my arm was edible. That dirt note is prominent, but it works in harmony with the chocolate and gives the whole thing depth. As it dries down, an unexpected party joins: incense. I can’t name which exactly, but it has undeniable headshop vibes to it. It sounds weird, especially because it’s not in the notes (unless this is just Sorce’s base), but it works. It’s like… a joint retirement cake between Joni Mitchell and Walt Whitman. Or like you’re making s'mores in a log cabin with a bunch of your stoner friends who super aren’t going to die to a slasher later. It’s definitely greater than the sum of its parts, and pretty much seals the deal on me crawling back to Sorcellerie for another order. 4.5/5, easy, would annoy the Haunted Forest No One Should Step Foot In for cake again.
Potential Practical Uses:

2024.05.19 22:55 uruindevrytngustpdb How do you beat late night cravings for chips, ice cream, chocolate and all that high cal, snacky food?

I am generally pretty good at calorie counting and maintaining calories, but have issues during week 3-4 of my cycle. And sometimes if I'm up late watching films with my housemates. That's when all reason and cues for hunger go out the window and I struggle to stop eating these things.
What do you do to stop the cravings for these foods, or restrict the quantity when you're body is telling you it wants more?

2024.05.19 22:49 Hallelujah289 Ben & Jerry’s/Blue Bell haul pt 1 of 2: Bossin’ Cream Pie Topped and Cookies ‘N Cream Cone

Yesterday bought four ice cream pints (last pic), two Blue Bell and two Ben and Jerry’s. It’s my first time buying Blue Bell so expectations were high but this Cookies n Cream Cone (ranked S-tier ultra top 5 YouTuber Cohen Thompson) fell short. Big caveat: it melted. Perhaps this isn’t a fair review. I suspect it still wouldn’t be my favorite flavor regardless.
Ben and Jerry’s Bossin’ Cream Pie is also mentioned on this sub, and maybe the second Topped ice cream I tried (I think I had a previous strawberry cheesecake one with white chocolate ganache top I also didn’t like). It has been suggested as superior to Jeni’s Boston Cream Pie which I haven’t tried. At less than half the price of Jeni’s when on sale, why not give it a shot? I’m here to say it’s fine, but also skippable.
Ben and Jerry’s - Topped Bossin’ Cream Pie.
“Vanilla custard ice cream with cake pieces and pastry cream swirls topped with milk chocolatey ganache and fudge chips.” Caveat: Have not actually tried Boston Cream Pie (have tried the donut) * Vanilla custard ice cream: a pleasant old-fashioned vanilla taste that’s a medium between Ben and Jerry’s Vanilla (classic) and Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla (old fashioned) but not as strong. Both flavors I’ll review next. * Cake pieces: very tasty, slightly salty yellow cake. Meant to resemble Boston Cream Pie, not donut, but recalls both anyway. Soft and blended into the ice cream rather than dense or chunky. A good amount. * Pastry cream swirls: No discernible difference in texture; however I do get a vanilla icing flavor sometimes. Not the custard taste I wish for and know from the donut. * Milk chocolatey ganache top: More fudge than ganache (thicker). Sweetened like chocolate frosting. Great to bite into but develops a vegetable oil chocolate taste like acceptable but not premium Palmer’s Halloween or Easter candy. * Fudge chips: good thickness. Would I repurchase? No. A fun ice cream with neat deconstructed ideas of Boston Cream Pie (cake or donut) to have and to finish once. Overly sweet. Hints at but ultimately lacks the desert’s (I’m familiar with the donut) iconic custard center gooeyness. * Rating: 6/10.
Blue Bell - Cookie Two Step.
“Vanilla ice cream with chocolate creme filled cookie crumbles, chocolate swirl and chocolate cone pieces covered in dark chocolate.” Caveat: This ice cream melted during transit. Lost 30% volume! Picture shows refrozen ice cream after taking same amount of bits of each (not much). The Ben & Jerry’s ice cream was subjected to about half the 30 minute transit time and was not significantly affected. * Vanilla ice cream: chocolate swirl is prevalent and very integrated leading to a Hershey’s chocolate syrup mixed with milk taste overall, rather than vanilla. * Chocolate creme filled cookie crumble: a Hostess chocolate cupcake with vanilla icing taste rather than Oreo. Other cookies and cream ice cream doesn’t usually contain cookies with creme center mix ins so this is unique. I still prefer Oreo creme center though (sweet creme rather than icing taste). * Chocolate swirl: Tastes like Hershey’s chocolate syrup which is good. But overpowering. * Chocolate cone pieces covered in dark chocolate: the best texture of the ice cream. Nice and crisp, fresh tasting. Not really dark chocolate though (mildest 50-55% dark chocolate maybe). Would I repurchase? No. Visually a dazzling ice cream with the appearance of stacked mix ins. Evenly distributed cookie (small) crumble with some exciting waffle cone. Yet too much syrup. Did not enjoy the cookies with creme center like I thought I would. Glad I got the pint instead of half gallon. Wish I got Cookies and Cream instead! * Rating: 6/10
Bossin Cream Pie alternatives: * Trader Joe’s - Banana Pudding. Has vanilla wafer cookie rather than yellow cake. Chewiegooier overall textures though. A similar flaw in a strong sweetness. 7/10.
Cookies n Cream Cone alternatives: * Private Selection - Denali Extreme Moose Tracks. Average but at least it’s got a better tasting chocolate swirl that has a smidge of salty dark chocolate taste. 6.5/10 * Private Selection - Chocolate Cheesecake. Average but i enjoy the cookie crumble (pie crust) better. Similar flavor profile to the above Private Selection. The cookies have a little bitter, salty and fruity taste. 6.5/10 * Perry’s - Bittersweet Symphony. Coffee ice cream, bittersweet fudge swirls, fudge chunks. A little more darker chocolate syrup swirl. 6.5-7/10? It’s been a long time.

2024.05.19 22:49 Aliabubwa17 Party menu feedback for 50

I'm cooking for a party for my dad in about 3 weeks. We are thinking about 50 people. We have done this type of thing before so I'm not worried about the logistics side too much. I have 2 neighbour's coming over to help.
I'm doing a tester round next weekend for 10 people to confirm the menu (some people are highly opinionated:) I let them know their opinion would be heard however I was making the final decision.
I'm looking for some overall thought on the menu as a whole as well as specific suggestions on the appetizers. I'm feeling confident on the main, however uncertain on appetizers. I don't want to do dips or anything too fusy. People have been told to come after 2 and Dinner around 5
Appetizers Bacon wrapped dates Tortellini skwers Caprese skewers Meat and cheese skewered (thinking various salami and a cube of cheese) Periogies (bought from a lady at the marker, served with sour cream)
Dinner (buffet) Steak (marinated and grilled and sliced either flank or short rib steak) Nappa cabbage salad with crunchy noodles Broccoli mandarin salad Spinach strawberry candied nut salad Roasted asparagus Potatoes (likely twice baked or looking at a gratin type) Garlic shrimp (debating grilling or sauting ) Rolls Mushroom casserole
Dessert Decorated sugar cookies (somebody else is making) Cake (bought) Fruit Homemade peanut brittle Homemade chocolate toffee crunch Maybe icecram but I think it is too difficult
Campfire Pizza Smores Summer sausage

2024.05.19 22:13 JerkyMcGee Ben & Jerry’s Oat of this Swirled!

Wow! I didn’t even know this flavor existed. Was at my local Wawa for something else when I took a quick peek in the ice cream freezer and saw this. Big fan of brown sugar and cinnamon! Not a huge chocolate fan but took the gamble. A lot of B&J flavors either have a chocolate base or gobs of fudge or brownie or so forth and it’s too much sweetness for me.
Opened it up, saw the giant chocolate flakes…but they weren’t too bad! I thought they might have been more finely crushed or but not it’s not a flavor breaker.
The brown sugar ice cream…HOLY SWEETNESS! In a good way at least. This is not a weak or milder flavor. It actually overpowers the chocolate. The cinnamon did add a very nice kick without being over the top. It reminds me a lot of the old Cinnamon Roll flavor that I can’t see to find anymore (discontinued?)
Overall score: 7/10!
I wouldn’t hesitate to get it again if I really wanted that kick in the taste buds sweetness! But there are definitely my other milder go to’s that I’d pick up first.
