2024.05.13 16:14 Leather_Focus_6535 The currently 124 offenders executed by the state of Oklahoma since the 1970s (warning, graphic content, please read at your own risk) [part 1, cases 1-62]

This is the list that I wrote for Oklahoma's execution roster since the nationwide reinstatement of capital punishment in the late 1970s. Something that should be mentioned is that given the nature of many death penalty related crimes, many of the descriptions contain very disturbing details. Please read at your own risk.
Florida's list is next, and I'll post my list for Texas once I've completed it. With Texas, I've currently finished 464 entries out of the 587 cases to date. That will probably take 7 or 8 posts for it all to be released, so I'll probably do two posts a day with Texas to avoid spamming the sub. At the end of this year, I'll repost the states that have conducted further executions with the updated information.
As with Missouri and Virginia, Reddit's maximum character count limitations forced me to divide Oklahoma's list into two separate parts. Here is the link to part 2.
The currently 124 executed offenders, cases 1 to 62:
1. Charles Coleman (~1950s-1990, lethal injection): A month after he was released on parole in 1979, Coleman broke into a house. While sacking it for any valuables, the homeowner’s brother and sister in law, 68 year old John and 62 year old Roxie Seward, walked in on him and were both shot dead. Coleman stole Roxie’s purse, several packets of frozen meat, and the homeowner’s watch during the burglary, and was arrested shortly afterwards. However, Coleman managed to escape custody, and went on a rampage that involved several burglaries, auto thefts, slitting the throat of a policeman in a failed murder attempt, the shooting death of 49 year old Russell Lewis Jr. in a carjacking, and the abduction of a deputy. The kidnapped deputy was rescued following an armed standoff with other police officers. Coleman had an extensive history of animal cruelty, armed robberies, assaults, and carrying concealed weapons convictions dating back to when he was 11 years old. He was also heavily suspected in the murder of his teenage girlfriend’s father, but was acquitted by the courts despite the prosecution’s strong belief in his guilt.
2. Robyn Parks (1977-1992, lethal injection): During a gas station robbery, Parks shot and killed Abdullah Ibrahim, a 24 year old Bangladeshi immigrant that worked as the attendant. According to Parks, he murdered Ibrahim for catching him using a stolen credit card.
3. Olan Randle (1980-1992, lethal injection): Randle invaded a home and shot the occupants, 41 year old Robert Swinford, Sinford's fiance 42 year old Averil Bourque, and Bourque's friend 38 year old Julia Lovejoy, dead. He took a pocket knife and several watches from the victims.
4. Thomas Grasso (~1970s(?)-1995, lethal injection): While living in Oklahoma, Grasso strangled 87 year old Hilda Johnson, the best friend of his girlfriend's grandmother, to death with her Christmas lights. He took $8 from her purse, several coins that added up to $4, and a television set that he sold for $125. Grasso then moved to New York, and strangled 81 year old Leslie Holtz for his social security check. The trialing arrangements caused some controversy, as the New York governors at the time were anti death penalty, and tried to prevent Grasso's extradition in favor of giving him a life sentence in their jurisdiction. Grasso had several previous convictions for theft and was fired multiple times for stealing from his jobs.
5. Roger Stafford (~1974(?)-1995, lethal injection): Stafford was condemned for killing at least 9 people in two separate robbery incidents with his brother and ex wife, though his ex wife claimed that he was involved with as many as 34 murders nationwide. The first convicted incident was when he and the ex wife carjacked and fatally shot a couple, 38 year old Melvin and 31 year old Linda Lorenz, and their son, 12 year old Richard. A few weeks after the Lorenz murders, Stafford stormed a restaurant and gunned down 6 employees, 56 year old Isaac Freeman, 43 year old Louis Zacarias, 17 year old Anthony Tew, 17 year old David Lindsey, 16 year old David Salsman, and 15 year old Terri Horst. One of Stafford's additional attributed victims was 20 year old Jimmy Berry, who was killed in the hold up of an Alabaman McDonalds, but he wasn't charged by the state due to his death sentences in Oklahoma.
6. Robert Brecheen (1983-1995, lethal injection): Breechen was involved in a feud over money with 59 year old Mary Stubbs and her husband. In an attempt to take what he perceived was owed to him, Breechen carried out a night time burglary of their home. While rummaging through the house, Breechen stumbled upon old Marie in her living room and shot her to death. The gunshots and screams awoke her husband, and he chased him away with his own gun.
7. Benjamin Brewer (1978-1996, lethal injection): Brewer raped his neighbor, 20 year old Karen Stapleton, in her home and stabbed her to death
8. Steven Hatch (1979-1996, lethal injection): Hatch and another assailant, Glen Ake, forced themselves inside the home that Richard Dougass, a 43 year old reverend, shared with his wife, 36 year old Marilyn, and their two children, 16 year old Brooks and 12 year old Lesile. The pair tied up the family and raped Lesile in front of her parents and brother. All four family members were shot, and Hatch and Ake ran off with $43 and the parents’ wedding rings. Richard and Marilyn were both killed in the shootings, while their children survived the attack. Ake was also initially condemned for the attack, but his sentence was overturned and resentenced to life following mental health concerns, and passed away from undisclosed natural causes in 2011.
9. Scott Carpenter (1994-1997, lethal injection): In a convenience store robbery, Carpenter stabbed the owner, 56 year old A. J. Kelley, in the neck, and hid the body in the minnow room. He filled his truck with $37 worth of gas from the pumps and drove away from the scene. His execution caused some controversy, as it was reported that Carpenter gasped and spasmed for 11 minutes after being injected.
10. Michael Long (1997-1998, lethal injection): Enraged that his coworker, 24 year old Sheryl Graber, refused him sex and started screaming for help, he stabbed her over 31 times. Long also shot and killed her son, 5 year old Andrew, for being a witness.
11. Stephen Wood (1992-1998, lethal injection): While heavily intoxicated, Wood stabbed two other homeless men, 46 year old Charles Stephen and 34 year old Charles Von Johnson, dozens of times each. He was given a life sentence for both of their murders. During his incarceration, Robert Brigden, a 59 year old former minister that was serving a 40 year sentence for molesting several girls between the ages of 4-14 in his congregation, moved into his unit after refusing to go into protective custody. Woods killed Brigden in a stabbing attack, and his sentence was escalated to death by the courts for it.
12. Tuan Anh Nguyen (~1982-1998, lethal injection): By all accounts, Nguyen was jealously possessive over his wife, 21 year old Donna. During one of their arguments over his behavior, he stabbed Donna, her 6 year old nephew Joseph White, and her 3 year old niece Amanda White, in their home and left the bodies to be found by the children’s parents. He fled to Arizona, groomed a 14 year old girl into an illicit “relationship”, and impregnated her. After he convinced her to move in with him, Nguyen physically and sexually abused the girl until she fled and went to the local police for help. Nguyen was then deported back to Oklahoma to face trial for Donna and the White children’s slayings, and was sentenced to death for them.
13. John Duvall (1986-1998, lethal injection): During a fight with his wife, 30 year old Donna, Duvall stabbed and suffocated her to death with a pillow.
14. John Castro Sr. (1983-1999, lethal injection): Castro carjacked Beulah Cox, a 31 year old Oklahoma State University student, after she picked him up hitchhiking and shot her to death. A few months later, Castro held up a restaurant with an empty pistol, and attacked the manger, 29 year old Rhonda Pappan, after forcing her to open the register. During their struggle, Pappan was fatally stabbed, and he took off with her purse. During his mid teens, Castro was allegedly molested by his mother. Castro's attorneys made the argument that his glimpses of Cox's buttocks reminded him of his mother's reported abuse, and he was triggered into attacking her for it.
15. Sean Sellers (1985-1999, lethal injection): In 1985, a then 15 year old Sellers tried to buy beer from a convenience store, but the clerk, 32 year old Robert Bower, denied him due to being underaged at the time. Sellers gunned him down in a fit of rage. A year later, Sellers shot and killed his mother, 32 year old Vonda Bellofatto, and stepfather, 43 year old Paul, in their sleep. Due to being 16 at the time of his conviction, Sellers remains the youngest condemned offender to have his sentence carried out in the post Furman era. He also attracted national media attention for claiming that his crimes were the result of demonic possession.
16. Scotty Moore (1983-1999, lethal injection): Moore was fired from a motel for undisclosed reasons. In retaliation, Moore and a cousin (whom he was dating at the time), assaulted the motel, and gunned down the desk clerk, 42 year old Alex Fernandez. According to court documents, the pair took a total of $97 in the robbery.
17. Norman Newsted (1984-1999, lethal injection): Newsted tricked Lawrence Buckley, a 26 year old cab driver, into picking him up. He shot Buckley dead and took his wallet. In an attempt to cover his tracks, Newsted placed the body inside the cab, and drove it into a creek near a local church. Despite his best efforts, Buckley’s cab and remains were discovered a day later by the church’s pastor.
18. Cornel Cooks (1982-1999, lethal injection): Cooks and his accomplice broke into the home of 87 year old Jennie Ridling. She was gagged, raped, and suffocated to death with gauze wrappings. According to autopsy reports, the pair abused her for over 2 hours. They then sacked the house for any valuables and left with her checkbook.
19. Bobby Ross (1983-1999, lethal injection): While robbing an inn, Ross fatally shot a police officer, 30 year old Steve Mahan, that tried to intervene.
20. Malcolm Johnson (~1970s(?)-2000, lethal injection): Johnson invaded the apartment of 76 year old Ura Thompson and sexually assaulted her. Thompson either died from having her chest compounded during the abuse or was suffocated by Johnson’s hands covering her nose. He seized several possessions such as furs, typewriters, purse, watch, rings, and a hand mirror, which were discovered by police in his residence during an unrelated investigation of a firearms possession charge. Johnson had an extensive criminal history, which included several convictions of rape, armed robberies, and burglaries. The case attracted controversy when it was discovered that the lead chemist in the investigation misconducted several of her other cases, and forged some of the evidence used in the trial. Despite the other overwhelming evidence to the contrary, Johnson’s supporters took the opportunity to push a narrative of his innocence.
21. Gary Walker (~1960s-2000, lethal injection): Walker abducted, raped, and murdered at least 5 women, 36 year old Margaret Lydick, 35 year old Jane Hilburn, 32 year old Janet Jewell, 25 year old Valerie Shaw-Hartzell, and 24 year old DeRonda Roy, and non fatally assaulted several other women and teenage girls. The victims were mostly strangled to death with their bras and panties. Some of them were forced to withdraw hundreds of dollars from ATMs before they were killed. He also strangled a man, 63 year old Eddie Cash, with an electrical cord while robbing his home. Walker had dozens of previous convictions for burglary, carjacking, drug possession, and carrying concealed weapons. Some of his earliest arrests occurred when he was a teenager.
22. Michael Roberts (~1988-2000, lethal injection): A career burglar, Roberts was condemned for murder of 80 year old Lula Brooks. She was raped and her throat was slit by an intruder in her home. Roberts' death sentence and execution has been contested, as he was convicted on his later recounted testimony alone. He claimed that the investigators tricked him into confessing with the promise of a plea deal that was allegedly withheld from him.
23. Kelly Rogers (1990-2000, lethal injection): Rogers’ girlfriend lured 21 year old Karen Lauffenburger into her apartment with a fake pizza order. They accosted her when she arrived with the delivery. After the couple forced Lauffenburger to hand to over the $40 she earned from the night's pizza deliveries and withdraw $175 from an ATM, Rogers raped and stabbed her to death. The body was left in Lauffenburger’s apartment and was found by her boyfriend.
24. Ronald Boyd (1986-2000, lethal injection): During a robbery spree of several gas stations and supermarkets, Boyd engaged in a shootout with the responding officers. A Master Patrolman, 32 year old Richard Riggs, was killed in the exchange.
25. Charles Foster (~1980s(?)-2000, lethal injection): Foster suspected a grocery store owner, 74 year old Claude Wiley, of making sexual advances at his wife. He arranged for her to entice Wiley to their home with an order. When he arrived with the delivery, Foster stabbed and bludgeoned him to death with a baseball bat. He a history of convictions involving threats and violence, though my sources didn’t disclose any specific details.
26. James Robedeaux (1978-2000, lethal injection): In 1978, Robedeaux strangled his first wife, 30 year old Linda, and plead guilty to a second degree murder charges. He was released after serving 6 out of a 25 year sentence despite an escape attempt. In the following year, he began a relationship with 37 year old Nancy McKinney while he married a different woman. During an argument, Robedeaux beat McKinney to death, dismembered her body with a saw and machete, and scattered the remains across the state. While being investigated for McKinney's murder, he was arrested for choking and beating his estranged second wife. The cases were incidental and kept separate by the courts.
27. Roger Berget (~1985-2000, lethal injection): Berget carjacked and abducted 33 year old Rick Patterson with an accomplice, and shot him dead. He also admitted to the beating death of a roommate, 40 year old James Meadows, on the behalf of the man's wife. As a trivial side note, Berget's brother Rodney was executed in 2018 by the state of South Dakota for killing a prison guard [for more information, please see Rodney Berget's entry under the South Dakota section of my states with less then 10 executions post].
28. William Bryson (1988-2000, lethal injection): To collect a $300,000 life insurance policy, Marilyn Plantz recruited her boyfriend Byrson and his friend to kill her husband, 33 year old James. Byrson and his friend ambushed Plantz in his house as he was coming home from work and beat him to death with a baseball bat. With the intentions of staging an accident, Marilyn ordered the pair to burn the body in the couple's pickup truck.
29. Gregg Braun (1989-2000, lethal injection): Across several states, Braun shot and killed 4 women, 48 year old Geraldine Valdez, 31 year old Gwendolyn Miller, 28 year old Mary Rains, 27 year old Barbara Kochendorfer, and one man, 54 year old Pete Spurrier, while robbing stores.
30. George Wallace (~1970s-2000, lethal injection): Known as "the Mad Paddler" due to his habit of spanking abducted preteen and teenage boys with a wooden paddle, Wallace kidnapped his victims by posing as a police officer. After duping his targets into thinking that they were being arrested, Wallace restrained them with handcuffs and leg chains. The captives were then sexually abused and shot or stabbed to death. His crimes were exposed when an 18 year old man he abducted escaped from him despite being shot and stabbed numerous times. By his own admission, Wallace murdered 18 year old Thomas Reed, 15 year old William Domer, 14 year old Mark McLaughlin, 14 year old Jeffrey Foster, and 12 year old Alonzo Cade.
31. Eddie Trice (1987-2001, lethal injection): Trice snuck into the home of 84 year old Ernestine Jones and raped her. After he beat Jones to death with numbchucks, he terrorized and extorted her cognitively disabled son of $500 with threats of killing him if he told anyone of the murder. The son was also assaulted with a hammer, and he received injuries to his right eye, right cheekbone, and his right forearm.
32. Wanda Allen (~1981-2001, lethal injection): In 1981, Allen got into a fight with her live in girlfriend, 21 year old Dedra Pettus, and shot her dead. Despite giving a bungled story about her being accidentally killed in a shootout with Pettus’ ex boyfriend to the investigators, Allen managed to secure a 4 year sentence for manslaughter after pleading guilty to a plea deal, and was released after serving two years. While incarcerated, she started dating a fellow inmate, 29 year old Gloria Leathers, and continued their relationship outside of prison. The couple’s relationship was marred with extreme domestic violence on Allen’s end. In one incident, Allen struck Leathers with a rake. In 1989, while they were arguing in front of a shopping center, Allen shot and killed Leathers. Leathers herself also had history of violence, and had a conviction for stabbing a woman to death. Allen and her defense team tried to use Leathers’ previous convictions to make a self defense argument, but that was shot down by the courts.
33. Floyd Medlock (1990-2001, lethal injection): 7 year old Katherine Busch went to visit her family's old apartment, which Medlock was residing in, by herself. Busch knocked on the door and Medlock let her inside after she begged for food. He then choked and sexually assaulted the girl, dunked her head in a toilet bowl, and stabbed her to death. The body was hidden in a nearby dumpster. Busch's grandmothers were staunch pro capital punishment and anti death penalty activists respectively, and their public feud over Medlock's sentence and execution attracted some media attention. Medlock also had an extensive criminal history despite being only 19 at the time of Busch's murder, and was previously arrested several times for indecent exposure, arson, armed robbery, and marijuana possession.
34. Dion Smallwood (1992-2001, lethal injection): Smallwood walked into the home of his ex girlfriend's adoptive stepmother, 68 year old Lois Frederick, without invitation. He had a tumultuous and often violent relationship with her adopted stepdaughter that she strongly opposed, and they broke up under her pressure. After an argument, Smallwood knocked Frederick unconscious with a croquet mallet, locked her in a car, and burned her alive in it.
35. Mark Fowler (1985-2001, lethal injection): To get back at his ex employers for firing him, Fowler and his partner, Billy Fox, stormed a supermarket that he used to work out. The pair rounded up 3 employees, Chumpon Chaowasin, a 44 year old Thai immigrant, 33 year old Rick Cast, and 27 year old John Barrier, at gun point. Their hostages were shot, clubbed, and stabbed to death, and they took over $2,7000 in cash and checks.

37. Loyd Lafevers (1985-2001, lethal injection): Lafevers and his accomplice, Randall Cannon, kidnapped 84 year old Addie Hawley from her home. She was raped, trapped in the trunk of a car, and burned alive in it. Although she was rescued, Hawley died from her injuries 6 hours later. The pair stole Hawley's wedding ring and Lafevers gifted it to a stripper. As Hawley's nephew was a Colorado state senator, her murder gained some attention from media outlets.
38. Dorsie Jones Jr. (1979-2001, lethal injection): While drinking at a bar, a barmaid chastised Jones for carrying an unconcealed gun. He shot at her in a fit of rage, but missed and injured his female companion instead. Jones then turned his attention to the other patrons and fired on them. 48 year old Stanley Buck Sr. was killed in front of his 19 year old son, who was also wounded in the shooting.
39. Robert Clayton (~1980s-2001, lethal injection): Clayton attacked 19 year old Rhonda Timmons while she was sunbathing near her apartment. Clayton had a previous rape conviction in Tennessee and a robbery conviction in Texas.
40. Ronald Fluke (1997-2001, lethal injection): Out of despair that his gambling addiction drove his family to near poverty, Fluke shot and killed his wife, 44 year old Ginger, and their daughters, 13 year old Kathryn and 11 year old Susanne, while they were sleeping in their bedrooms. He initially attacked Ginger with a hatchet, but turned to shooting when she fought back.

42. Terrance James (1983-2001, lethal injection): While awaiting trial for a theft of government property charge, James and two accomplices strangled a fellow inmate, 25 year old Mark Berry, with wire out of their suspicions of him being a snitch. They then hung the body in an attempt to make it look like a suicide. Berry was another party in the theft of government property case, and James and his accomplices believed that it was his testimony that got them arrested.
43. Vincent Johnson (1991-2001, lethal injection): Johnson gunned down 44 year old Shirley Mooneyham in her home. The prosecution believed that Mooneyham's boyfriend arranged the killing to collect a life insurance policy, but he was acquitted at trial.
44. Jerald Harjo (~1980s-2001, lethal injection): Harjo snuck into the bedroom of 64 year old Ruth Porter, raped her, and suffocated her with a pillowcase. He then snatched Porter's car keys and drove off with her van. His past criminal history was extensive, and was in prison numerous times for burglary and autotheft.
45. Jack Walker (1988-2001, lethal injection): Disgruntled with the custody dispute over their then 3 month old son, Walker stabbed his ex girlfriend, 17 year old Shelly Ellison, and her uncle, 30 year old Donald, 32 and 11 times with an ice pick during a confrontation at their home.
46. Alvie Hale Jr. (1983-2001, lethal injection): Hale kidnapped 24 year old William Perry to extort a $350,000 ransom from his banking family. When the negotiations failed, Perry was shot dead, and Hale buried the body on his father's property.
47. Lois Smith (1982-2001, lethal injection): Smith, her son, and a female accomplice abducted her son's ex girlfriend, 21 year old Cindy Baillee, from an airport out of fear her testifying of his involvement in the drug trade. Baillee was taken to Smith's ex husband's house, and stabbed in the throat by her ex boyfriend while driving to their destination. Inside the home, she was taunted by Smith with a gun, and was shot 7 times in the chest and 2 times in the back of the head. While her son was reloading the gun, Smith jumped on and crushed Bailee's throat.
48. Sahib Lateef Al-Mosawi (1992-2001, lethal injection): Following a dispute over their newborn son's name, Al-Mosawi's estranged wife, 26 year old Inaam Al-Nashi, fled to the apartment of her uncle, 45 year old Mohammed. Al-Mosaw attacked the pair in the apartment and stabbed them to death. Inaam's sister was also stabbed, but she managed to escape with her life. The couple and their families were refugees from Iraq that were displaced by the First Persian Gulf War, and they fled into the United States.
49. John Romano (1985-2002, lethal injection): Romano and his accomplice David Woodruff robbed and murdered two of their acquaintances. One of the victims, 63 year old Lloyd Thompson, was attacked in his apartment. Thompson was held down by the pair while they stabbed him 22 times and served his spinal cord. The other victim, 52 year old Roger Sarfaty, was tied up, beaten, stabbed 5 times, and strangled to death in a jewelry store he owned. In the robberies, Romano and Woodruff stole several pieces of jewelry from Sarfaty, and took most of Thompson’s quarter collection.
50. David Woodruff (1985-2002, lethal injection): As mentioned under John Romano's entry, Woodruff took part in the robbery murders of Lloyd Thompson and Roger Sarfaty.
51. Randall Cannon (1985-2002, lethal injection): Cannon assisted Loyd Lafevers in abducting, sexually assaulting, and burning Addie Hawley alive in her car. Although he was acquitted of molesting Hawley, Cannon was still condemned for his part in the kidnapping and murder.
52. Earl Frederick Sr. (~1989-2002, lethal injection): Frederick beat Bradford Beck, a 41 year old veteran that was crippled during his service in the Vietnam war, to death in his home after befriending him. He ransacked the house and dumped Beck's body in a field. A second murder, the robbery and shooting death of a Texan man, 77 year old Shirley Fox, was also tied to him. However, authorities in Texas withheld from prosecuting Fredrick due to his death penalty trial and conviction in Oklahoma. Both Fox and Beck had physical disabilities, which led prosecutors to the conclusion that Frederick intentionally selected and depredated on disabled men.
53. Jerry McCracken (~1980s(?)-2002, lethal injection): McCracken and his accomplice shot up a bar, killed 3 patrons and the bartender, and made off with $350. The victims that lost their lives were 41 year old Carol McDaniels, 37 year old Timothy Sheets, 34 year old Steven Sheets, and 27 year old Tyrrell Boyd. Months before the mass shooting, McCracken was paroled after serving time for stabbing 3 people in a bar fight.

A group of 4 customers, consisting of 33 year old Ralph Zeller, a married couple, and their 14 month old daughter, unwittingly walked in on him, and he herded them into a backroom to be shot. Zeller was killed, the couple were wounded, and Neill left the daughter unharmed due to running out of bullets. Neill's boyfriend was given a life sentence for the robbery and murders, despite not being directly involved.
55. Ernest Carter Jr. (~1989-2002, lethal injection): After being fired from an autoshop, Carter robbed it with an accomplice, and fatally shot a security guard, 35 year old Eugene Manowski. The pair stole the shop's tow truck, and later tried to burn it with Carter's girlfriend to destroy any traces of the crime. Carter was also previously accused of burning a friend to death in the previous year, but the charges were dismissed.
56. Daniel Revilla (1987-2003, lethal injection): While babysitting his girlfriend's son, 13 month old Mark Gomez, in their home, Revilla broke the boy’s ribs in a beating and scalded him with boiling water. When he brought the boy to a hospital, Revilla gave a story that he accidentally hit Gomez’s head with a door handle, which was quickly seen through by the staff. According to the accounts of his girlfriend and her family, Revilla was violently abusive to Gomez, and they recounted incidents of him trapping the boy in a kitchen drawer, dunking him in cold water, folding him into a pull up bed, and hanging him by his ankles with duct tape.
57. Bobby Fields (~1990s-2003, lethal injection): Fields shot and killed 77 year old Louise Schem while burglarizing her home. She had tried to shot him with her .25 calibre pistol, but he wrestled the gun away from her, and gunned her down with it. His intentions was to steal Schem's television set to sell for cocaine, but left empty handed after losing his nerves with the struggle and murder. According to court documents, Fields had a previous robbery and assault conviction, and several arrests for drug possession.
58. Walanzo Robinson (1989-2003, lethal injection): A member of the Gangster Bloods street gang, Robinson shot and killed 26 year old Dennis Hill, an affiliate of a rival gang, in a turf war over drug sales.
59. John Hooker (~1971-2003, lethal injection): As a teenager in 1971, Hooker attended a party at a friend's house, and got into an argument. In a fit of anger, he fatally shot 18 year old Alta Lang, and wounded two other partygoers. Due to the witnesses refusing to cooperate with the investigation and being unable to prove any calculated intentions, Hooker was given a manslaughter conviction, and released a few years later. After he was paroled, Hooker started dating Sylvia Stokes, and fathered several children with her. Their troubled relationship lasted for 8 years, and ended when Stokes filed a protection order against him. In retaliation, Hooker lured Stokes and her mother, 53 year old Durcilla Morgan, into his apartment and stabbed them both to death.
60. Scot Hain (~1980s-2003, lethal injection): Hain carjacked and abducted a couple, 27 year old Michael Houghton and 22 year old Laura Sanders. After taking $565 and some bags of clothing, he forced them into the trunk of their car at gunpoint, and burned them alive in it. He had several previous arrests for robbery, and was involved with a number of rapes and attempted kidnappings months before the Houghton and Sanders' murders.
61. Don Hawkins Jr. (1985-2003, lethal injection): Hawkins kidnapped 29 year old Linda Ann Thompson and her two daughters, aged 4 years old and 18 months old, from a mall. Although his original intentions were to ransom off Thompson and her children, Hawkins gang raped the captive woman with his cousin and his girlfriend's teenage nephew, and drowned her in a lake. Thompson's children were spared and simply left with a babysitter. Hawkins and his accomplice then went on a nation wide rampage with his accomplice that involved the abductions and rapes of several grown women and teenage girls, hanging 31 year old David Coupez of Colorado in his home while robbing him, and countless other robberies.
62. Larry Jackson (~1984-2003, lethal injection): In 1984, Jackson shot and killed his girlfriend, 19 year old Freda Washington. He accepted a plea deal that dumbed down the charges to second degree murder, and was given a 30 year sentence for it. During his incarceration, Jackson started a relationship with 29 year old Wendy Cade. Despite her promises of marriage after his release, Cade left him for another man, and they got engaged. When Jackson was assigned to a prison work crew, he snuck out and went to confront Cade. Reportedly, the two had bought alchool, cocaine, and cigerates together and had sex in Cade's apartment. However, they got into an argument, and he slashed Cade's throat and stabbed her 31 times with box cutters. Jackson then left with her jewelry, watch, and the keys to her jeep.

Dijeron. "Eres idéntico a Dr Doom y a Le Chifre..." "Apestas hasta acá..." lo tome en cuenta. "Solo como un perro..."

2024.04.11 17:13 Lone_Eingreifen0000 Slowly losing a friend to the madness of the Culture War...

Foreword: I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I'll try anyway and feel free to remove if this is not appropriate to this sub.
<>

I have a close friend (still friends, but w/ a certain degree of friction and falling-out), who I feel like I'm slowly losing due to his obsession against 'Woke', 'Communists', 'Cultural-Marxists', 'Socialists', almost everything on the 'Left' to the point of fanaticism.
When talking about anything else, he's civil. But the moment we talk about movies, TV shows, economics, and politics, especially woke issues, he becomes a different person.
I'm not exactly sure when it started, but I can estimate that it started when Hollywood, especially Disney, was slowly mishandling it's franchises (Marvel, DC, Star Wars (especially TLD, TROSW), Ghostbusters (especially the 2016 version), Charlie's Angels (especially 2019), Indiana Jones, etc.). To say that he was utterly devastated on what those beloved franchises have become is an understatement. From then on, he developed an absolute hate against Hollywood, especially Disney, and especially against Woke.
Also during this time until now, he found a collection of people and channels on Youtube that shares his sentiments and ideologies. To enumerate w/o any particular order:
<> - Shadiversity - The Quartering - HeelvsBabyface - Critical Drinker - Jordan Peterson - Tim Pool - MauLer et. al. - Ben Shapiro - Candace Owens - Nerdrotic - PragerU - Charlie Kirk - Steven Crowder - Stephen J. Shaw (of the Birthgap Crisis) - Sydney Watson - Peter Zeihan - Bret and Eric Weinstein (of the Evergreen State College) - Thomas Sowell - any Youtubers who are proponents for Bitcoin - Alex Jones - James Lindsay (on the expose of Leftist bias in colleges and universities) - Joe Rogan - Dave Rubin - Any Youtubers who talk shit against CCP China (to differentiate it from Taiwan) - Tucker Carlson - Fox News - Project Veritas - any Youtube channel showing videos of 'owning' the Libs, Woke, Leftists, etc. - Elon Musk - Vivek Ramaswamy - Noam Chomsky - any Youtubers bashing Hollywood, especially Disney, to the point of ad nauseam - Ron Desantis (because he hates Disney) - California Insider (because he hates California for being a "Communist State") - any Youtubers bashing California - any Youtubers bashing Joe Biden (because he's a "woke socialist scum") - any Youtubers bashing Justin Trudeau (because he's a "Communist Dictator" and secretly Fidel Castro's "son", and because of Canada's Bill C-16) - any Youtubers who expose individuals, institutions, organizations, governments as woke - any Youtubers bashing Trans people for participating in women's sports, being groomers, etc. - any Youtubers bashing ESG, DEI, CRT, any programs or ideas deemed woke - any Youtubers bashing Sweet Baby Inc. for forcing diversity and being woke
The list could go on, but this is all that I could remember by memory and it's possible that it could be more that I'm unaware of.
Now why would I make a list like this? It's because just as it makes it easy to identify a patient's history thru enumerating the list of things he/she ingested, I'm enumerating the list of thing that influenced him to become what he is today.
As you can see, he has consumed a sizable 'cocktail' of media, mostly Right-Wing, all because our beloved franchises we're badly mishandled and he solely blames the woke culture for it.
To be clear, I do share his sentiments on the mishandling of franchises, and I do hate the woke for being holier-than-thou 'Karens'. What I DO NOT share is his obsession, fanaticism to the point of being swept by the madness of hate the Culture War is producing now.
I hate how this situation forces us to add 'is it woke?' on our checklists of discussing a movie/TV show.
But most of all, I hate the fact that the Culture War, especially the obsession against woke has distracted us from things that are truly important like: - Is the story good? - Are the characters likeable and relatable? - Did it entertained us?
Even more concerning is that this also extends to gaming.
A prominent example is regarding Activision-Blizzard. He is much more offended that they are practicing DEI, ESG, or (supposedly) adding a transgender option in World of Warcraft, over the fact that the company was predatory in microtransactions, or even the sexual abuse cases!!!
My only respite is the fact he hates Nazis. If anything, he hates any form of gov't w/ absolute power, just like the Nazis, and Commies.
And at least, he's not an anti-vaxxer.
But despite that, he's more willing to support Trump over Biden because of the supposedly woke agenda by the latter. Never mind that the former is a potty mouth, habitual liar, racist, incompetent, corrupt etc. (at least he's not woke).
His reason for supporting the Republicans over the Democrats is that the former is flawed but tolerable, while the latter is 'absolutely evil'. Never mind that the former shills to Putin and is sabotaging the gov't, while the latter keeps Ukraine, and NATO afloat and at least trying to make people accountable for their crimes.
He would even quote C.S. Lewis in justifying a corrupt gov't over a woke one: “Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”
He's also anti-EU because, you guessed it, woke.
So, as a good friend, what did I do?
I try to reason with him that I share his sentiments on Hollywood, especially Disney (ikr, it's the 3rd time I've used this phrase), but I do make it clear that I don't share his obsession, his eagerness to listen to suspicious and controversial figures, that background checking people who have supposedly good talking points matter because "even the Devil will use the Bible for his purpose".
At best, he counter-argued that "at least they have good talking points and not woke", and at worst accused me of "bad faith" or "blackpilled" because the people I criticize are actually 'apolitical and neutral'.
He won't accuse me of being woke though. I made it very clear that I hate them for misusing virtues for their own agenda, "virtue signallers". But I also made it clear that I don't trust the individuals he's using as reference or inspiration (seriously, Alex Jones of all people???).
TL;DR: Friend becomes hate-obsessed anti-woke anti-left because of Hollywood, especially Disney*. Will call you "bad faith" if you criticize his 'idols'. * That's the 4th time now.
I'm sharing you my experience because of the profound effect of the Culture War that turned countless individuals into hate-filled fanatics, including my close friend.
Is this a lesson, a warning, or a currently ongoing tragedy that is happening to everyone that can relate?
Thank you for reaching the end, even though this post might sound like a rant. And I'm sorry in advance if this post made you depressed, but I need a way to at least vent my frustration and at least remind everyone that this is real and is happening to someone else, somewhere and some time in this world.
PS: We are from Asia, but i won't disclose what country for personal security.

2024.04.10 04:37 karenvideoeditor Ketchup

Whenever I saw those action movies on TV, with cryptic communications between spies and conspiracies that ‘went all the way to the top’, I always thought they were exciting. Who wouldn’t? Our ordinary lives, being Joe Schmoe and having a wife and 2.5 kids, is tedious at best, which I think is one of the reasons so many of us have aimed for different lives. Not just more fulfilling, but more interesting, more engaging. Not all of us achieve that James-Bond life, of course, but we do reach.
Turns out? Being involved in that kind of life isn’t as great as I’d imagined.
“Hey, Ketchup!” came the shout from the living room. “Get in here!”
I barked out a laugh, putting Family Guy on mute and shoving myself up off the couch. “I told you, only my high school buddies ever used to call me that.”
What I used to consider the embarrassing story behind that particular nickname was, at this point, hilarious. In the cafeteria one day, the cap loose on the ketchup bottle, I shook it, and it went directly all of my shirt, making me look like a murder victim. So, in hindsight, I suppose the nickname could’ve been a lot more gruesome. My classmates had instead gone with something simple.
“Yeah, but you got a letter addressed to you,” Connor told me, handing over a few envelopes.
I flipped past two bills, and my gaze turning curious. There was a letter to me here in the home I rented with three roommates, something that never happened aside from birthdays and holidays. Our address was handwritten, but rather than my name, the letter was addressed to ‘Ketchup’. “Huh,” I muttered. Examining the return address, also handwritten, I shook my head. “Dunno who it is. No one’s called me that for…geez, has it been six years already?”
“Maybe your high school realized they messed up giving you that diploma and you need to give it back?” Connor suggested, walking backwards as he spoke.
“Ha ha!” I called after him as he headed up the stairs to his room. Sticking my thumb under the flap and tearing open the envelope, I sat down at the kitchen table, taking out the letter inside. There were two thin pieces of cardboard on either side of it, which had made the envelope hard to bend. A memory card in a plastic case dropped out onto the wooden surface of the table when I opened the piece of paper. I narrowed my eyes at the card and picked it up, examining it briefly before putting it down and turning my attention back to the letter.
Hey Jake,
This is Katie Branch. I know you always hated that nickname, but I needed to make sure this got to you. I can’t tell you what’s going on. And I can’t tell you what’s on that SD card (the password to unencrypt it is with someone else). But I need your help.
At this point my expression had turned serious and my spine straightened.
It’s been six years since graduation, but I know your memory isn’t that terrible, so picture me with contacts now instead of glasses and you’ve pretty much got it. Aside from that, my life has gone a bit crazy recently, and you won’t be familiar with that part of me. I work at a company that I won’t discuss here, for security reasons, and I’m in some trouble. The kind you can’t get away from. The kind you need to make sure the people closest to you don’t know about, or it could put them in danger.
I swallowed hard, my eyes flicking up and around my kitchen, feeling as if there were eyes on me. I’d never gotten a letter like this and I’d sure as hell never expected to. Taking a deep breath, I read on.
You remember that time you punched Andy Shaw in the nose after he wouldn’t stop bullying Charlie? When the school wouldn’t do anything and you couldn’t just stand there and watch? I do. To be honest, that moment is who you are to me. You’re protective, you don’t put up with bullies, and you’ve got a good heart. So, I decided to go to you on this. I decided I could trust you.
I’ll be emailing you every three days from now on. It’ll be something you can recognize from me, but it won’t talk about things that actually happened. As long as those emails keep coming, keep the SD card. You don’t need to buy a safe or anything; just put it somewhere no one will stumble upon it. If that third day ever comes and I don’t email you, I need you to mail this SD card to Saul Mertens at CNN. Address enclosed below.
Picking up the SD card, I stared at it as if doing so would eventually reveal its contents. When that didn’t work, perhaps unsurprisingly, I put it down and continued to read.
I’m sorry to put this on you. If you can’t handle this, stick the letter back in the envelope with the SD card, seal it up, and return to sender. I’ll find someone else. But I think I’m running out of time, so I’m hoping with everything in me that you’re still the guy I remember from high school. If I can count on you to do this, put two blank pieces of paper in this envelope before returning to sender.
Either way, thank you. I feel lucky to have people I know that I can turn to when my ship gets caught up in a storm. Hopefully, you’ll never have to do anything, and this’ll just be some weird story you get to tell down the line.
Sincerely,
Katie
I did it. Of course I did it. I wouldn’t have left a friend hanging, no matter how long it had been since we’d last spoken. With no clue what the hell was going on, I mailed the envelope back with the blank sheets of paper and put the SD card in an old piggie bank on my shelf that I occasionally chucked change into. And I waited.
The emails arrived like clockwork for months. Every three days, I’d wake up and there would be some nonsensical email from some lady calling herself Martha Kent, talking about things going on in her imaginary life. Until one morning, I booted up my laptop, checked my email, and it wasn’t there. It never arrived.
I skipped work that day, unable to leave my computer’s side. Genuinely concerned, I found myself pacing, unable to even concentrate on anything on Netflix to pass the time. I even opened every email in my spam folder in the hopes that something had gotten jumbled when it sent, but nothing. That night, I slept restlessly. How long was I supposed to wait until I took action? What if it was a fluke? I could get an email the next morning.
Despite my agitated mind, I fell asleep. And upon checking my email again that next morning, nothing.
I didn’t wait any longer than a few hours. That afternoon, I wrote the address of the guy at CNN, Saul Mertens, on an envelope and put five pieces of paper folded in it to make it difficult to bend, enclosed the SD card, and sent it off.
The next two days were agonizing. I stalked the reporter online furiously, finding everywhere he had an online presence and obsessively checking each of them. It wasn’t long before I spotted what it was that I’d sent out to him. Because the story took off, and the narrative they reported about the corruption and embezzling was on every news channel. Strangely, it was scary, and it was sad, and it was despicable, but it was anticlimactic.
Until the next day, when they found her body.
I kept an eagle eye on the news following the story as it continued to develop, and I probably knew her identity even before the police figured it out. Before they’d even connected it to the breaking news story dominating the airwaves. Her body had been pulled from the Hudson, they released a description and said they were going to check missing persons, and the police said her identity would not be confirmed until next of kin could be contacted.
Sitting there sunk deep into the couch cushions, tears in my eyes, I felt helpless. Katie clearly had taken on something too big for her to handle and what had I done? I’d sat on an SD card for a few months. Could I have reached out and encouraged her to seek out different, safer avenues of dealing with the situation she’d found herself in? I hadn’t even tried to contact her.
The next day, begrudgingly dragging myself out of bed to go into a job that I couldn’t quite convince myself mattered right now, my cell phone rang as I pulled out clothes from my closet. It wasn’t even yet 9 a.m., making it unlikely it was a spam call, so I picked up. “Yeah?” I asked tiredly.
“Ketchup?”
My heart stuttered in my chest. “Wh-What?”
“You heard me.”
I swallowed hard, taking a few unsteady steps and sitting down heavily on my bed. “Who is this?”
“Saul Mertens,” he spoke. My eyes widened in shock. “They identified the body.”
“I know,” I muttered. “Tell me they’re going to answer for this. That someone will go down for her murder.”
“That’s not why I’m calling,” he said, his voice soft. “She sent me a letter with the SD card’s password. She wanted me to make sure that everyone who helped her, the ones like you, know what you did.”
“I didn’t do enough, I should’ve-”
“That is exactly what I meant,” Saul interrupted. “She was a smart woman, and extremely careful. What happened to her is terrible and tragic, but it was not your fault. You did exactly what you needed to here. You brought justice down on the people who tried to silence her. And what happened to her is not on you. It’s on them. All right?”
I let the words soak in for a long moment before I nodded. “All right.” I swallowed hard. “And Saul?”
“Yeah.”
“Thank you. For making sure they didn’t get away with what they were doing.”
“Just doing my job, kid,” he said softly. “So was she. So were you. Sometimes, life sucks. Sometimes things aren’t right, they aren’t fair, and they hit us hard. All we can do is keep moving forward.”

2024.04.06 18:04 KostisPat257 With Daredevil: Born Again wrapping filming, here is everything we know about the series so far

I had made a similar post back when the overhaul was announced. You can compare the 2 to see what changed/was added and what has remained the same, although I make a small comparison myself at the end of this post.
This is the continuation of a series of posts I'm doing to prepare people for upcoming releases by listing everything that we know about them. Check the previous posts out if you missed them (Cap 4, Thunderbolts).
As always, all leaks are taken from the Source Accuracy Database, and only reliable sources are chosen to make these compilations.

Publicly Released Information

Status: In Post-Production
Working Title: Out the Kitchen

Synopsis

Longtime rivals Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk try to leave behind their darker alter egos to serve the people of New York, only to have their pasts catch up to them.

Crew

NOTE: Some of these are information from prior to the overhaul. We don't know if the other directors apart from Moorhead and Benson will receive credit with the amount of reshoots Moorhead and Benson did. We don't know if the new production team hired a new cinematographer and production and costume designers. And we don't know if Chris Gary and Rudd Simmons are still exec producers. I personally doubt Chris Gary has remained an exec producer on the series after how Secret Invasion turned out

Cast

NOTE: The spoiler tagged cast members have been confirmed through set photos not officially through the company or the trades.

Leaked Information [POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD]

The new pilot they shot after the overhaul takes place in October 2025, around the same time as Love and Thunder and Werewolf by Night in the MCU timeline and around the time of the NYC mayoral elections. We catch up with Matt, Karen and Foggy working together in their new firm, almost exactly 8 years since they formed it in November 2017.
Muse (Hunter Doohan) shows up and we know he paints over Fisk's campaign posters at some point. He is set up as the series' main villain.
One night, the trio is hanging out at Josie's and having fun as usual when Bullseye attacks them to take revenge and is prepared to kill Karen.
Matt puts on the costume and tries to stop Dex, but he fails. Foggy manages to save Karen himself, but he is shot in the process and dies.
We cut to a couple of months later in January 1st 2026, during New Year's Celebration on Times Square where Fisk makes his first speech as the new mayor of NYC. There he mentions how vigilantes like Daredevil, Spider-Man and the Punisher are one of the city's biggest problems and he plans to outlaw them.
Episode 2 picks up 1 year later in January 2027 (~2 months after The Marvels, aka present day MCU), and we learn that Matt has sent Karen away for protection and has rebranded his law firm as "Matt Murdock and Associates". He has given up the Daredevil suit, probably because his alter ego has put his close ones in danger over and over again and he doesn't want to have another death in his consciousness.
He now works with fellow lawyer Kirsten McDuffie (Nikki M. James), trying to help the city through the court of law.
He is also dating Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva), a therapist, who just happens to be Fisk's and Vanessa's therapist.
Fisk is trying to help the city through his position as mayor, but that has taken a toll on his marriage, which has prompted the couple to seek professional consultation.
As mayor, Fisk has created the Special Anti-vigilante Task Force, a police task force to hunt vigilantes down.
One night, the vigilante/hero Hector Ayala aka White Tiger, stops what he believes to be a mugging. But in reality it was a bunch of Fisk's corrupt cops who were trying to silence an informant. The cops try to stop the White Tiger, and during the hassle, one of the cops dies, which gets White Tiger labeled as a cop killer. And him being a vigilante makes his case worse.
The city takes him to court and Matt and Kirsten take his case. The next 3 episodes (2,3,4) deal with this court case while we also see Muse's doings in the background.
Matt slowly goes back into being Daredevil and eventually finds enough evidence to win the case, but Hector is murdered by one Fisk's corrupt cops anyway shortly after the trial. On top of that, the cop was wearing the Punisher symbol in order to make Punisher a scapegoat for the murder and worsen the public image of vigilantes even more.
Frank doesn't like this one bit and comes back to forefront to deal with these cops. This is mostly what this next 3 episodes (5,6,7) deal with, although we still see Muse and Fisk in the background.
Fisk eventually figures that Heather Glenn is dating Matt Murdock, but he also has a bigger problem to worry about, as "Daniel Blade" (Michael Gandolfini), Fisk's Director of Communications, is actually revealed to be his illegitimate son, Butch Fisk.
The 2-part finale which has been written and shot post-overhaul brings back Karen and Bullseye to conclude that thread, concludes Punisher's beef with the anti-vigilante task force who are misappropriating his symbol, concludes Muse's story, concludes Fisk's story with Vanessa, Butch and Heather, and even introduces a new White Tiger (probably either Ava Ayala, Hector's sister, or Angela Del Torro, Hector and Ava's niece) who wants to take revenge for the death of Hector.
Additional side characters include Buck Cashman (Arty Froushan) who is Fisk's new assistant and Wesley's replacement, BB Urich (Geneya Walton), who is Ben Urich's niece and tries to continue his legacy and uncover Fisk's corruption, and Cole North (Jeremy Earl), a prominent member of Fisk's task force.
Apart from the new pilot and the new 2-part finale, the addition of Karen, Foggy and Bullseye in order to create a smoother transition between the old show and this new one and doing Foggy's death on screen, the core story hasn't changed. Matt will not wait until episode 4 to suit up as DD again anymore, he will do it earlier and the show will be less of a court procedural and more action-heavy, brutal and gory, with a guaranteed TV-MA rating, just like the old show. Thus, a chunk of the already filmed 6 episodes were rewritten and reshot in order to facilitate that, but some of the footage was kept.
What do you guys think?

By popular request from yesterday's post on Indiana's executions, I've decided to release my list for South Carolina's execution roster that I made for my personal death penalty project since the 1970s. Which state would you like to see covered next?
The executed 43:
  1. Joseph Shaw (1977-1985, electric chair): Out of anger for his girlfriend leaving and cutting ties with him, Shaw and his accomplices decided to hunt for random women and girls to rape. 21 year old Betty Swank had the misfortunate of being the one they laid their eyes on, and they abducted her as she was walking home from work. She was sexually assaulted and shot to death by Shaw. A few weeks later, the group abducted 14 year old Carlotta Hartness after they gunned down her boyfriend, 17 year old Thomas Taylor. Hartress was gang raped and fatally shot. Their bodies were both stripped of their wallets by Shaw and his gang.
  2. James Roach (1977-1986, electric chair): Roach was one of Shaw's accomplices. He was sentenced to death for taking part in the Taylor-Hartness murders
  3. Ronald Woomer (~1971-1990, electric chair): Woomer and a partner sought to steal the coin collection of 67 year old coin collector John Turner, and shot him dead with a shotgun in the process of carrying out their plans. The pair then broke into a home, and gunned down 27 year old Arnie Richardson and his 37 year old sister in law Earldean Wright. Richardson's 5 year old daughter survived with severe gunshot wounds, and was able to bike to her aunt's home for help. Their third and final attack was the abduction of two convenience store clerks, 34 year old Della Sellers and 24 year old Wanda Summers. Both women were raped and shot in the head. Sellers died instantly, but Summers managed to escape with facial disfigurements, and contacted the police. Woomer surrendered while his partner committed suicide to avoid capture. Woomer had a long rap sheet that dated back to his mid-teens, which included several charges for petty thefts and drug possessions, and a statutory rape conviction for an illicit relationship with a 15 year old girl.
  4. Donald Gaskins (~1953-1991, electric chair): Gaskins murdered a bare minimum of 14-31+ people between the ages of 2-45, and buried them in his backyard. His killing methods were very diverse (which included stabbings, poisonings, drownings, strangulations, beatings, shootings, and a bombing), as were his motivations. Some of the victims were underaged girls (including his own niece, 15 year old Janice Kirby) he molested that were threatening to report their abuse, a few others were accomplices in various crimes that he had disputes with, and he occasionally murdered out of racism. In one case, he drowned a white woman, 22 year old Doreen Dempsey, for getting impregnated by a black man, and her 2 year old daughter Robin for being a biracial product of their union. Most of his victims were buried in his backyard. On death row, he blew up Rudolph Tyner, a 23 year old fellow death row inmate, with improvised C4. Tyner was sentenced to death for murdering a couple during a robbery, and the victims' son hired Gaskins to kill him. Gaskins had an extensive criminal record that included several incidents of burglaries, assaults, rapes, fencings, and fraud.
  5. Sylvester Adams (1979-1995, lethal injection): Adams broke into the home of 16 year old Bryan Chambers to rob it. When he couldn't find any money, Adams abducted Chambers and tried to ransom him to his family. Unfortunately, Chamber's mother didn't realize what was happening when Adams called her to make demands, and blew him off. Out of frustration, Adams strangled Chambers to death with a cord.
  6. Robert South (1983-1996, lethal injection): South murdered Daniel Cogburn, a 29 year old police officer, in a drive by shooting. Cogburn was citing a traffic ticket that had nothing to do with South when he was shot dead by him.
  7. Fred Kornahrens III (1985-1996, lethal injection): Kornahrens stormed into a mobile home to confront his ex wife, 35 year old Patti Avant after stalking and harassing her for an undisclosed period of time. In the following rampage, he shot and stabbed Patti, her 10 year old stepson Jason, and her 69 year old father Harry Wilkerson to death.
  8. Michael Torrence (1987-1996, lethal injection): Torrence's sister in law worked as a stripper and was allegedly taunted by a pair of patrons, 41 year old Dennis Lollis and 31 year old Charles Bush. She complained to her husband, who was also Torrence's brother, about them. Seeking revenge, the couple recruited Torrence, and they hunted down Bush and Lollis. The sister in law first lured Bush to the brothers by pretending to be a broken down driver needing a ride home. When they arrived at the family home, Bush was beaten with a tire iron and strangled to death with a dog leash. The trio then snuck into a motel room Lollis was staying, and stabbed him 20 times as he slept. Both Bush and Lollis were robbed after they were killed. A few months after the Bush-Lollis murders, Torrence picked up Cynthia Williams, a 20 year prostitute, and shot her dead when they got into an argument. He had previous convictions, but the sources available to me didn't disclose any details about them.
  9. Larry Bell (~1975(?)-1996, electric chair): Bell is confirmed to have abducted and murdered 17 year old Sharon Smith and 9 year old Debra Helmick, and is suspected in the disappearances of 26 year old Sandee Cornett and 21 year old Denise Porch. With his verified and convicted murders, the victims were raped and suffocated with plastic wrapped around their faces. During the course of the kidnappings and manhunt, Bell taunted Smith's family through phone calls and letters.
  10. Doyle Lucas (1983-1996, lethal injection): Lucas burglarized the home of couple 65 year old Bill and 64 year old Evelyn Rayfield, and shot them to death.
  11. Frank Middleton Jr. (~1980s-1996, lethal injection): While serving a 6 year sentence for stabbing a 13 year old boy over a dime dropped at a phone booth, Middleton escaped from prison. As a fugitive, he robbed, raped, and fatally strangled two women, 49 year old Shirley Mack and 21 year old Janell Garner. Garner was murdered in the courtyard of a Catholic school, and Mack was killed while walking home from night shift as a cook for a local restaurant. Middleton also sexually assaulted an unidentified woman at a gas stop, but she managed to survive the attack.
  12. Michael Elkins (1990-1997, lethal injection): Elkins and a partner feigned car trouble on a remote section of the highway to entrap good samaritan drivers. The victim who took the bait was 59 year old Patricia Whitt. She was stabbed to death by Elkins and he stole at least three of her rings.
  13. Earl Matthews Jr. (1984-1997, lethal injection): Matthews tried robbing 16 year old Lucia Aimar and her boyfriend at gunpoint when they pulled into a drive restaurant on a date. After seizing money from Aimar's purse and her boyfriend's wallet, Matthews tried forcing them to give him a ride. The couple resisted him, but he shot both of them in the struggle. Aimar died of her injuries, while her boyfriend survived the attack.
  14. John Arnold Jr. (1973-1998, lethal injection): Arnold, his cousin John Plath, and their underaged girlfriends lured 33 year old Betty Gardner, a black farmhand, into their van. Out of a desire to kill a black person, they gang-raped Gardner, stomped on her chest, stabbed her with pocket knifes and broken bottles, and strangled her with a belt and rope made out of bundles of clothing. The attackers then carved "KKK" on Gardner's corpse and defecated on it. Arnold had an extensive criminal history, and his past convictions included assault, false imprisonment, and burglary. He also was involved with fatally shooting a friend, 18 year old Frank Winchnarz, but evaded prosecution from the lack of sufficient evidence.
  15. John Plath (~1970s-1998, lethal injection): Plath assisted John Arnold and their underaged girlfriends in gang-raping and lynching Gardner. Like his cousin, Plath had an extensive criminal record, which included charges of attempted robbery, theft and auto theft, harassment, and receiving stolen goods. He also shot and wounded his ex girlfriend, but she refused to press charges.
  16. Sammy Roberts (1980-1998, lethal injection): Roberts abducted 3 gas station attendants, 55 year old Louis Cakley, 28 year old Bill Spain, and 23 year old Kenneth Krause at gunpoint and forced them into his vehicle. He robbed his captives and drove them to a remote wooded area. The victims were then shot to death, and some were repeatedly stabbed.
  17. Larry Gilbert (1977-1998, lethal injection): Gilbert and his half brother J. D. Gleaton stabbed and shot 44 year old Ralph Stoudemire to death in the process of robbing a gas station he owned. Both were under the influence of drugs during the attack.
  18. J. D. Gleaton (1977-1998, lethal injection): Gleaton assisted his above mentioned half brother Larry Gilbert in murdering Ralph Stoudermire, and robbing his gas station.
  19. Louis Truesdale Jr. (1980-1998, lethal injection): Truesdale abducted 18 year old Rebecca Eudy from a grocery store. He raped and shot Eudy to death, and left her body in her car. Truesdale previously had a sexual relationship with Eudy, and he used their history to claim to the courts that she went with him willingly.
  20. Andrew Smith (1983-1998, lethal injection): Smith got into an argument with his cousin, 82 year old Corrie Johnson, and her 86 year old husband Christy, over their car. In the following altercation, Smith stabbed them both to death. Corrie was found with 17 stab wounds on her body, while Christy had over 27 stab wounds on him.
  21. Ronnie Howard (1985-1999, lethal injection): Howard and an accomplice flagged down Chinh Thi Nguyen Le, a 34 year old refugee from Vietnam, at a stop sun and robbed her at gunpoint. The pair then suffocated Le with a plastic bag pulled over her head and stole her car. Howard was also involved with 72 armed robberies. Most of his previous targets were Taco Bell and Pizza Hut restaurants.
  22. Joseph Atkins (~1969-1999, lethal injection): In 1969, Atkins stabbed his 23 year old half brother Charles after returning home from the Vietnam War. Charles had a history of being abusive to Atkins. On one occasion in their childhood, Charles hospitalized Atkins after stabbing him in the stomach. Atkins was sentenced to life in prison, but was paroled in 1980. About five years later, he killed his adoptive father, 75 year old Benjamin, and a neighbor, 13 year old Karen Patterson, with a shotgun and a machete in a drunken rampage.
  23. Leroy Drayton (1984-1999): Drayton robbed a gas station and kidnapped the clerk, 19 year old Rhonda Smith, at gunpoint. After taking her to an abandoned coal mine, he shot Smith to death.
  24. David Rocheville (1991-1999): After watching Dances With Wolves in a movie theater, Rocheville and his partner Richard Longworth decided to rob the establishment. The pair shot dead the usher, 19 year old Alex Hopps, and abducted another employee, 24 year old James Green. They forced him to unload money out of the ticket booth, tossed Green into their van, and drove away with him. When they stopped, Rocheville killed Green by shooting him in the head.
  25. Kevin Young (~1980s-2000, lethal injection): Young and 3 other men robbed 35 year old Dennis Hepler in front of an elementary school where he worked as a principal. After Hepler gave them his wallet, Young and one of his accomplices shot him to death. Young had an extensive criminal history, though the sources accessible to me didn't give any specifics.
  26. Richard Johnson (1985-2002, lethal injection): Johnson and two others were picked up by 52 year old Dan Swanson while hitchhiking. Johnson fatally shot his host in his sleep, and commandeered Swanson's RV with his companions. They went on a drinking binge while they were driving, which attracted the attention of Bruce Smalls, a 30 year old patrolman. When Smalls pulled the group over, Johnson shot him to death.
  27. Anthony Green (1987-2002, lethal injection): Green held up 36 year old Susan Babich at gunpoint when she pulled into the parking lot of a mall. After snatching her pocketbook, Green shot her to death.
  28. Micheal Passaro (1998-2002, lethal injection) During an argument with his estranged wife (who was his second wife, whom he married after the passing of his first), Passaro burned down their minivan with their daughter, 2 year old Maggie, in it. Passaro initially intended to self immolate with the van, but jumped out at the last minute. Reportedly, he wanted to inflict pain on his current wife, and be reunited with his first wife in heaven.
  29. David Hill (1994-2004, lethal injection): While driving a stolen car with a stash of maijuana, Hill was stopped by a police chief, 37 year old Spencer Guerry. In a desperate attempt to avoid arrest, Hill ambushed and fatally shot Guerry as he was checking his license and identification cards.
  30. Jerry McWee (1991-2004, lethal injection): McWee and an accomplice robbed a convenience store for money to buy beer. The clerk, 32 year old John Perry, was fatally shot in the head in the process, and the pair stole $350 from the registers.
  31. Jason Byram (1993-2004, lethal injection): In the early hours of the morning, Byram entered the home of 36 year old Julie Johnson. He found Johnson sleeping on the couch, and stabbed her with a butcher knife Byram grabbed from the kitchen. Bryam then stole her purse, jumped out of a window, and drove away with her van. Johnson's husband found her mortally wounded on the couch, and she succumbed to her wounds on the way to the hospital.
  32. James Tucker (~1960s-2004, electric chair): Tucker drove up into the driveway of 52 year old Rosa Oakley and chatted with her. After he determined that she was alone, Tucker shot Oakley to death and stole $14 from her purse. A few weeks later, he targeted a cottage owned by a horse racing training school, and found the tenant, 21 year old Shannon Mellon, sleeping on the couch. Tucker bound Miller with duct tape, shot her in the head, and stole $20. Tucker had an long criminal history and his earliest offenses happened when he was a child. Some of his previous convictions include sexually abusing an 83 year old woman and an 8 year old girl, and several break in and theft charges.
  33. Richard Longsworth (1991-2005, lethal injection): Longworth was an accomplice to the previously mentioned David Rocheville. He helped him with the robbery murders of two theater employees.
  34. Hastings Wise (~1980s-2005, lethal injection): Wise was fired from the R.E. Phelon factory, which he perceived was for racially discriminatory reasons. In a fit of rage, he stormed into his former job, and shot his ex boss, 56 year old Charles Griffeth, and 3 coworkers, 31 year old Ernest Filyaw, 30 year old David Moore, and 27 year old Esther Wood dead. Wise was an ex convict, and had previous convictions of bank robbery, theft, and possession of stolen goods.
  35. Shawn Humphries (~1984-2005, lethal injection): In 1991, Humphries robbed a convenience store at gunpoint. When he saw the owner, 43 year old Dickie Smith, reaching for a gun, he fatally shot him. Humphries previously served prison time for breaking and entering and auto theft.
  36. William Downs Jr. (1991-2006, lethal injection): Downs committed his first verified murder in 1991 when he abducted 10 year old James Porter. He raped and strangled the boy to death. 6 years later, Downs intercepted another boy, 6 year old Keenan O'Mailia, while he was riding his bicycle. Like Porter, O'Mailia was raped and strangled to death. Downs engaged in acts of necrophilia with both of his victims' bodies.
  37. Calvin Shuler (1997-2007, lethal injection): Shuler worked as an armored car driver and security guard. He ambushed 3 of his coworkers while they were passing through a neighborhood, and shot one, 77 year old James Brooks, to death. The survivors returned fire, but were wounded by him in the shootout. Although Shuler managed to seize the armored car, the money inside was damaged by gunfire and blood stains, and was forced to abandon it empty handed.
  38. David Hill (1996-2008, lethal injection): Hill's twin 3 year old sons and 2 year old daughter were removed by CPS from his and his ex wife's custody on allegations of neglect and sexual misconduct. In retaliation, Hill stormed a social services office, and shot 3 social workers, 52 year old James Riddle, 35 year old Josie Curr, and 30 year old Michael Gregory, dead. Riddle was killed for being the worker that took his children, Gregory for being a witness, and Curr for simply being black.
  39. James Reed (1993-2008, electric chair): Reed briefly dated 28 year old Laurie Rego while they served in the army together, but he was arrested for assaulting her when she tried to break up with him. During his time in prison, Reed wrote threatening letters to Laurie. After he was released, he went to the residence of Laurie's parents, 51 year old Joseph and 46 year old Barbara, to search for her. When Laurie wasn't present, Reed shot Joseph and Barbara to death.
  40. Joseph Gardner (1992-2008, lethal injection): Gardner and two other men abducted 25 year old Melissa McLauchlin after she drunkenly locked herself out of her own house, and forced her into their car. McLauchlin was taken to a mobile home, tied up and gang raped by them and two other men. She was soaked with hydrogen peroxide and bleach, shot 8 times, and dumped near a highway. The murder was pushed out of Gardner's desire to avenge Rodney King's beating and centuries of oppression against Black Americans.
  41. Luke Williams (1991-2009, lethal injection): To collect a life insurance policy, Williams beat his 39 year old wife Linda to death and fatally strangled his 12 year old son Shaun. He placed their bodies into the family van and crashed it into a tree in order to make it look like an accident. Days before the murders, Linda had made complaints to a crisis hotline that Williams was abusive to her.
  42. Thomas Ivey (~1993-2009, lethal injection): Ivery and another inmate escaped from jail while awaiting trial for a reckless firearms discharge accusation. The pair abducted 30 year old Robert Montgomery while he was walking home from work and shot him to death. Two days later, they fatally shot a police officer, 38 year old Thompson Harrison, that approached them for questioning in a mall.
  43. Jeffrey Motts (1995-2011, lethal injection): Motts was originally serving a life sentence for stabbing his great aunt and great uncle, 73 year old Etta Osteen and 79 year old Clyde Camby to death during a 1995 robbery. His sentence escalated to death in 2005 when he fatally stabbed his cellmate, 26 year old Charles Martin. Martin was previously sentenced for an aggravated assault charge, and was months away from release at the time of his death.

Directors at the Box Office: Kathryn Bigelow

Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Kathryn Bigelow's turn. Yesterday, it was International Women's Day, so it was important to give a post to a female director.
Originally, she started as a painter. For a while, Bigelow lived as an impoverished artist, staying with painter Julian Schnabel in performance artist Vito Acconci's loft. Bigelow teamed up with Philip Glass on a real-estate venture in which they renovated distressed apartments downtown and sold them for a profit. After earning a master's degree at her film program, she began teaching, writing papers and making a short film. The short film was noticed by director Miloš Forman, and her career would soon transition into films.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was she to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze her career.

The Loveless (1981)

"You never can tell on a day like this... things could be goin' jake one minute, and presto, before you know it you're history."
Her directorial debut. It stars Willem Dafoe, and follows a motorcycle gang of greasers who become involved in trouble in a small southern town.
Bigelow used resources of MoMA's Film Study Center to film this in just 22 days. As it was a very small scale project, this didn't have reported box office numbers. It received mixed reviews, although some commended Bigelow for her ability in doing a lot with low money.

Near Dark (1987)

"They can only kill you once. But they can terrify you forever."
Her second film. It stars Adrian Pasdar, Jenny Wright, Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen and Jenette Goldstein, and follows a young man in a small Oklahoma town who becomes involved with a family of nomadic American vampires.
During the 80s, there was a resurgence in vampires films, with some like Fright Night, Once Bitten, Vamp and The Lost Boys. But that wasn't the original plan for Bigelow here. She wanted to make a Western film, but found that studios weren't interested in the genre after many box office duds. She and her co-writer Eric Red decided to insert the popular vampire element then, which allowed them to explore a rare genre. She knew James Cameron, and she chose to use some of the stars from Aliens: Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen and Jenette Goldstein.
Despite being made on just $5 million, the film was a flop, making just $3 million in theaters. Bigelow blamed the performance on competition with The Lost Boys, which had a bigger studio and opened in more theaters. But the film was well received, and Bigelow was praised for her ability in combining many genres at once.
  • Budget: $5,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $3,369,307.
  • Worldwide gross: $3,369,307.

Blue Steel (1990)

"For a rookie cop, there's one thing more dangerous than uncovering a killer's fantasy. Becoming it."
Her third film. The film follows Jamie Lee Curtis, Ron Silver and Clancy Brown, and follows a police officer who shoots and kills a robbery suspect on her first day of duty and then becomes involved with a witness of the shooting.
While Curtis was a recognizable name, the film still bombed at the box office, making just $8 million. But it received positive reviews, although Bigelow now really needed a success. Maybe the next one will be it.
  • Budget: $10,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,217,997.
  • Worldwide gross: $8,217,997.

Point Break (1991)

"27 banks in three years. Anything to catch the perfect wave."
Her fourth film. It stars Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Lori Petty and Gary Busey, and follows an undercover FBI agent who is tasked with investigating the identities of a group of bank robbers while he develops a complex relationship with the group's leader.
Development on the film started back in 1986. Ridley Scott was supposed to direct, and Matthew Broderick, Johnny Depp, Val Kilmer, and Charlie Sheen all being considered to play Johnny Utah. Eventually, the producers started searching for a director. James Cameron suggested Bigelow, her then-wife, and both made uncredited rewrites to the script to accomodate her. After getting Reeves, Swayze and Petty onboard, they underwent surf training with former world-class professional surfer Dennis Jarvis on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Filming these scenes was a challenge, with Swayze cracking four of his ribs.
The film opened with $8 million, ranking #4 behind Terminator 2: Judgment Day. It eventually earned $83 million worldwide, a much needed box office success for Bigelow after a string of flops. The film was well received, and has been considered as an influential action film; for example, The Fast and The Furious was developed as a Point Break rip-off. A remake was released in 2015, and to the surprise of maybe two or three WB executives, it was a disaster.
  • Budget: $24,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $43,218,387.
  • Worldwide gross: $83,531,958.

Strange Days (1995)

"You know you want it."
Her fifth film. The film stars Ralph Fiennes, Angela Bassett, Juliette Lewis, Tom Sizemore, Michael Wincott, and Vincent D'Onofrio. Set in Los Angeles on the last two days of 1999, the film follows Lenny Nero, a black marketeer of an electronic device that allows a user to experience the recorded memories and physical sensations of other people, and Lornette "Mace" Mason, a bodyguard and limousine driver, as they are drawn into a criminal conspiracy involving Nero's ex-girlfriend Faith Justin and the murder of a prostitute.
James Cameron started developing Strange Days in 1986. A few years later, he presented the story to Bigelow, now her ex-wife. They started developing the worldbuilding; Cameron focused more on the romantic side, while Bigelow centered more on "the edginess, the grit" part of the film, which was something she was always interested in. Cameron then made a 90-page treatment, Jay Cocks rewrote it and then Cameron made final touches before handing it to Bigelow.
Bigelow was motivated to start work on Strange Days shortly after a series of cultural incidents that occurred in the United States in the early nineties, such as the Lorena Bobbitt trial and the 1992 Los Angeles riots that followed the Rodney King verdict. Angela Bassett and Ralph Fiennes joined shortly thereafter, and Bono was announced to play Philo Gant, although he would later turn down the film.
Although it received support from Fox and Cameron, the film was a huge box office bomb. It earned a poor $17 million worldwide against a $42 million budget. The film drew mixed reactions from critics and audiences; while some praised the cinematography, visual style, and performances of the cast, others criticized its portrayal of rape and violence. Its reputation grew with time and it achieved a cult following, but this almost killed Bigelow's career. Furthermore, many attributed the creative vision to Cameron, diminishing Bigelow's perceived influence on the film.
  • Budget: $42,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $7,959,291.
  • Worldwide gross: $16,959,291.

The Weight of Water (2000)

"Hell hath no fury."
Her sixth film. Based on Anita Shreve's novel, it stars Elizabeth Hurley, Catherine McCormack, Sean Penn, Josh Lucas, Vinessa Shaw, Katrin Cartlidge, Ciaran Hinds, and Sarah Polley. A newspaper photographer researches an 1873 double homicide and finds her own life paralleling that of a witness who survived the tragic ordeal.
The film drew negative reactions, and critics felt Bigelow had not achieved as much weight with the fictional story of the present against her portrayal of the events of the past. To make things worse, this film was delayed by two years from its Toronto Film Festival premiere, losing buzz. And when it was released, it made an abysmal $321,279.
  • Budget: $16,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $109,130.
  • Worldwide gross: $321,279.

K-19: The Widowmaker (2002)

"Fate has found its hero."
Her seventh film. The film stars Harrison Ford, Liam Neeson, Peter Sarsgaard, Donald Sumpter, Christian Camargo, Michael Gladis and John Shrapnel, and takes place in 1961 and focuses its story on the Soviet Hotel-class submarine K-19.
The film received mixed reviews, with a point of criticism towards the deviation from the true story. And despite having Ford as the star, it was still a box office bomb, failing to recoup its $90 million budget. That's three box office duds in a row for Bigelow. Ouch.
  • Budget: $90,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $35,168,966.
  • Worldwide gross: $65,716,126.

The Hurt Locker (2008)

"You don't have to be a hero to do this job. But it helps."
Her eighth film. It stars Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, Christian Camargo, Ralph Fiennes, David Morse, and Guy Pearce. The film follows an Iraq War Explosive Ordnance Disposal team who are targeted by insurgents and shows their psychological reactions to the stress of combat.
Mark Boal, a freelance journalist and friend of Bigelow, was embedded with an American bomb squad in the war in Iraq for two weeks in 2004. When Boal was embedded with the squad, he accompanied its members 10 to 15 times a day to watch their tasks, and kept in touch with Bigelow via email about his experiences. Boal used his experiences as the basis of a fictional drama based on real events. Boal's intent was creating a film that would accurately depict the lives of soldiers abroad, something that he claimed was not seen on CNN.
While working with Boal in 2005 on the script, Bigelow began to do some preliminary, rough storyboards to get an idea of the specific location needed. Bomb disarmament protocol requires a containment area. She wanted to make the film as authentic as possible and "put the audience into the Humvee, into a boots-on-the-ground experience." For the main characters, Bigelow made a point of casting relatively unknown actors: "it underscored the tension because with the lack of familiarity also comes a sense of unpredictability."
Bigelow wanted to film in Iraq, but as they couldn't guarantee the safety of the crew from snipers, they were forced to film in Jordan, within miles of the border of Iraq. The film was shot in 44 days, with temperatures averaging 120 °F (49 °C). It wasn't without challenges either; Renner was frustrated by the temperature and the fact that he had to wear the bomb suit that weighed 80–100 lb (36–45 kg) every day. While filming a scene, Renner fell down some stairs and twisted his ankle, which delayed filming because he could not walk.
The film premiered at the 2008 Venice Film Festival, and despite the acclaim, it struggled in finding a distributor as Iraq War films were box office duds. Summit Entertainment bought it, although the film started playing in some markets in 2008. The film debuted in North America in June 2009, where it had a slow roll-out, to the point that it never entered the Top Ten at all. It closed with $17 million domestically and $49 million worldwide, recouping its $15 million budget.
The film received universal acclaim across the world, and it was proclaimed as perhaps the best Iraq War film. Nevertheless, the film was criticized by some Iraq veterans and embedded reporters for inaccurately portraying wartime conditions. It was nominated in nine categories at the 82nd Academy Awards and won in six: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Film Editing. With this Best Director award, Bigelow became the first woman in winning the award and also the first female director to helm a Best Picture winner. Funny story is that on that night, she was seated right in front of James Cameron, her ex-husband who was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director for Avatar. She made history.
  • Budget: $15,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $17,017,811.
  • Worldwide gross: $49,259,766.

Zero Dark Thirty (2012)

"The greatest manhunt in history:"
Her ninth film. The film stars Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Reda Kateb, Mark Strong, James Gandolfini, Kyle Chandler, Stephen Dillane, Chris Pratt, Édgar Ramírez, Fares Fares, Jennifer Ehle, John Barrowman, Mark Duplass, Harold Perrineau, and Frank Grillo. The film dramatizes the nearly decade-long international manhunt for Osama bin Laden, leader of the terrorist network Al-Qaeda, after the September 11 attacks. This search leads to the discovery of his compound in Pakistan and the U.S. military raid where bin Laden was killed on May 2, 2011.
Bigelow and Mark Boal had initially worked on and finished a screenplay centered on the December 2001 Battle of Tora Bora, and the long, unsuccessful efforts to find Osama bin Laden in the region. The two were about to begin filming when news broke that bin Laden had been killed. They scrapped the project, although some details allowed them to re-focus on a new story.
Along with painstakingly recreating the historic night-vision raid on the Abbottabad compound, the script and the film stress the little-reported role of the tenacious young female CIA officer who tracked down Osama bin Laden. Boal said that while researching for the film, "I heard through the grapevine that women played a big role in the CIA in general and in this team. I heard that a woman was there on the night of the raid as one of the CIA's liaison officers on the ground – and that was the start of it."
The film received critical acclaim and was one of the year's best reviewed films. But like The Hurt Locker, it also attracted controversy. The film was accused of inaccurately portraying the CIA and its pro-torture stance. But the film was a box office hit: it became Bigelow's first film to hit $100 million worldwide. It also received 5 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. Her career was just going up.
  • Budget: $40,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $95,720,716.
  • Worldwide gross: $132,820,716.

Detroit (2017)

"One of the most terrifying secrets in American history."
Her tenth film. It stars John Boyega, Will Poulter, Algee Smith, Jason Mitchell, John Krasinski, and Anthony Mackie. Based on the Algiers Motel incident during Detroit's 1967 12th Street Riot, the film's release commemorated the 50th anniversary of the event.
The film received very positive reviews. But Bigelow once again struggled at the box office; it earned a poor $23.5 million worldwide, far below its budget.
  • Budget: $34,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $16,790,139.
  • Worldwide gross: $23,355,100.

Other Projects

Bigelow has also directed for television. Some of her credits include Wild Palms, Homicide: Life on the Street and Karen Sisco.
She served as an executive producer on Triple Frontier. Originally, she was going to direct it, but she handed duties to J.C. Chandor as she wanted to work on other projects.

The Future

There were no updates on Bigelow for years. But recently, it was reported that she would direct an adaptation of David Koepp's novel, Aurora, for Netflix. It was only described as "characters who are coping with the collapse of the social order, set against a catastrophic worldwide power crisis." But the project was announced in 2022 and there hasn't been more updates.

9 The Weight of Water 2000 Lionsgate $109,130 $212,149 $321,279 $16M
She made 10 films, but only 9 have reported box office grosses. Across those 9 films, she has made $383,551,540 worldwide. That's $42,616,837 per movie.

The Verdict

Sadly, not reliable.
Bigelow's career has been very inconsistent at the box office. More than half of her films have lost money, and Strange Days almost ended her career. Of course, getting a cult following on some of her films has helped her, and she is obviously a very influential voice in cinema (she's the first female Best Director winner). While one might argue that she is not interested in the box office receipts, it still feels like we could've missed on more great films by her if she didn't struggle in this aspect. Oh well, there's nothing we can do to change that.
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be M. Night Shyamalan. A very interesting case of how a director was on top of the world, then crashed, then rose, and now back down.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... Terrence Malick. One of my favorite filmmakers, even if some don't love his films.
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
March 11-17 M. Night Shyamalan There's no adaptation in Ba Sing Se.
March 18-24 Spike Lee Is he really to blame for the lame Oldboy remake?
March 25-31 Baz Luhrmann 30 years, only 6 films.
April 1-7 Terrence Malick What's the deal with The Way of the Wind?
Who should be next after Malick? That's up to you.

2024.03.05 08:57 adpirtle Doctor Who Timeline Review: Part 190 - The Annihilators

In my ever-growing Doctor Who video and audio collection, I've gathered over fifteen hundred individual stories, and I'm attempting to (briefly) review them all in the order in which they might have happened according to the Doctor's own personal timeline. We'll see how far I get.
Today's Story: The Annihilators, written and directed by Nicholas Briggs
What is it?: This is the ninth release in Big Finish’s The Third Doctor Adventures.
Who's Who?: The story stars Tim Treloar and Daisy Ashford, with Jon Culshaw, Michael Troughton, Frazer Hines, Karen Archer, Daon Broni, Mark Elstob, Sam Stafford, and Bethan Walker.
Doctor(s) and Companion(s): The Third Doctor, the Second Doctor, Liz Shaw, Jamie McCrimmon
Recurring Characters: Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, Sergeant Major Roach
Running Time: 02:48:29
One Minute Review: While reinstalling the TARDIS console, the Doctor experiences a temporal hallucination of his previous self, but he doesn't have time to dwell on it. He and Liz have been summoned to Lewgate, where the water is behaving strangely after an unmarked car sank into it the previous night. When the vehicle is retrieved, it's covered in noxious living tissue, as is the body of the policeman found inside, and when the Doctor examines the corpse, he discovers that it's not human.
Particularly during its first three episodes, this serial feels like Nicholas Briggs' attempt at crafting a love letter to Classic Who's seventh season, mirroring its seven-part structure and trying to recreate its overall atmosphere. He does such a good job that the appearance of the Second Doctor and Jamie at the end of the third episode feels a bit jarring, since they don't really mesh with the established tone. That being said, there is a delight to be had in listening to them running around in a story where they clearly don't belong, and while they don't add a lot to the plot, they never get in the way of what is ultimately a very good serial, even if it's resolved in a way that undoes everything that happened.
The big guest stars in this one are Michael Troughton, successfully teasing his version of the Second Doctor, and Frazer Hines, whose appearance helps to make up for the fact that he wouldn't be included in Beyond War Games. As for the regulars, Treloar gives another reliable performance as the Third Doctor, while Ashford and Culshaw have never sounded better as Liz and the Brigadier.
Score: 4/5
