My Star Trek Ranking Part 2: 900-876

2024.06.01 15:05 WhovianTrekkie_6366 My Star Trek Ranking Part 2: 900-876

Hello; really loved the interaction with my first post, so thanks so much for that! I'll just reiterate: spoilers for all Star Trek, and everything is just my opinion.
900) Unnatural Selection (1989)
TNG 2x7
Writer: John Mason & Mike Gray
Director: Paul Lynch
We've seen this idea done before and better. Yeah, it's a little bit different this time: it centres around children genetically engineered to be free of disease (isn't that illegal in the Federation?). But the actual plot of the episode is little different from TOS' The Deadly Years, with Doctor Pulaski aging and trying to find a cure for the condition. An uninspired repeat of a TOS episode that wasn't even that good in the first place.
899) We'll Always Have Paris (1988)
TNG 1x23
Writer: Deborah Dean Davis & Hannah Louise Shearer
Director: Robert Becker
Bored me stiff. I'm not always a huge fan of time travel stuff in general, and this is one of the least dynamic uses of that story type I've ever seen. Picard also has some weak character development, in his reminiscence about the girlfriend he left behind to join Starfleet, after he runs into her in this episode. The resolution with Data is fine, though, and I do like that they used him, as somebody less affected by the Maddox Effect, to solve the problem. Functional, just really dull.
898) Angel One (1988)
TNG 1x13
Writer: Patrick Barry
Director: Michael Rhodes
I will say that, as a teenage boy and as a young man now, this episode did give me empathy for what women go through in real life: being dismissed as weak and soft and barred from meaningful work. Beyond that, however, this episode really says nothing. It feels like it wants to be a deep and compelling exploration of gender roles, but apart from that feeling of empathy it gave me it doesn't accomplish anything of the kind. It's just a rote story about an oppressed section of society trying to combat their oppressors, and Riker saves the dissidents from being executed with a dull speech.
897) Silicon Avatar (1991)
TNG 5x4
Writer: Jeri Taylor, story by Lawrence V Conley
Director: Cliff Bole
Oh, just what I always wanted: the return of the Crystalline Entity from Datalore! Most anticipated villain return ever! But seriously, this could have been an interesting episode exploring a decent creature, but all that ends up happening is the Enterprise chasing the Crystalline Entity while Data has conversations with the mother of one of the victims of its attack on his colony. I will say that her hatred of Data got some genuine emotion out of me, as I raise my hackles against anyone who dares attack that loveable android, and seeing her come round to him was reasonably satisfying. But I still wasn't intrigued by their conversations, or the story of her seeking revenge for her son's death. The actual murder of the Crystalline Entity was done with a decent weight, but the episode takes forever to get there, through a slog of boring conversations and virtually no emotional investment for me.
896) The Outrageous Okona (1988)
TNG 2x4
Writer: Burton Armus, story by Les Menchen, Lance Dickson & David Landsberg
Director: Robert Becker
An aimless, artless story of a rogue caught between two fathers hounding him for his misdeeds. I don't find Okona amusing or charming, so his heavy presence in the episode doesn't do anything for me, and the story surrounding him is weak too. Data's stand-up comedy stuff is quite funny; Brent Spiner plays it brilliantly. I particularly enjoy the scene where he's trying out his act on Guinan, and it's just so bad. Also love Whoopi Goldberg's delivery of 'No' after Data asks her if his act was good. But this B-plot has only a flimsy connection to the main story, and therefore its presence leaves the end product feeling messy as well as weak.
895) Bounty (2003)
ENT 2x25
Writer: Hans Tobeason, Mike Sussman & Phyllis Strong, story by Rick Berman & Brannon Braga
Director: Roxann Dawson
An A-plot and B-plot that are both very bad. The story of Archer getting kidnapped by a bounty hunter is rote and uninspired, and definitely feels like it was one of the last ideas the writers came up with for the season. They were just filling time with a poor sequel to the earlier episode Judgement. His interactions with the Tellarite do not interest me at all, and I do not care about the Tellarite's lost ship. The B-plot with T'Pol prematurely going through the Pon Farr sees some of the worst sexualisation of the character, plus some cringey dialogue between her and Phlox. Archer's ending escape from the Klingons, with the Tellarite's secret help, is solid, though.
894) The Omega Glory (1968)
TOS 2x23
Writer: Gene Roddenberry
Director: Vincent McEveety
Goes from mundane to insane. For much of its runtime I would give this my label of dull but functional: there's a rogue Starfleet Captain trying to discover the secret to eternal youth on a pre-warp planet, and there's a lot of fighting with some of the savage natives. It's all very boring... until the last quarter.
It gets revealed that this is (yet another) TOS Season 2 Earth parallel, with the savages representing the US and the village people the Communists. There is no explanation given for how the aliens ended up with all the exact paraphernalia of that time on Earth, from the US flag to the American Constitution; it's all just ludicrous.
The crowning weirdness of the episode is Kirk's lauding of the American Constitution as the greatest thing ever invented. Now, I don't just not like this because I'm English; I would feel the same if the British (unwritten) Constitution was being lauded like this. I consider myself a pretty patriotic person, and I believe that every country has equal reason to celebrate themselves, but I feel it is utterly inappropriate in Star Trek for any one country or group to be held up as the ultimate shining example of civilisation. This is because Trek is meant to represent a future where everybody's come together under one banner. There's a lot to praise about the American Constitution, but it's inappropriate for it to be held up as the 'One True Way', if you will. Kirk's final admiring look at the US flag is so cringeworthily saccharine. So, yeah, this episode is boring for most of its runtime, and it certainly isn't in the end... it's much worse.
893) The Muse (1996)
DS9 4x21
Writer: Rene Echevarria, story by Rene Echevarria & Majel Barrett-Roddenberry
Director: David Livingston
The DS9 Lwaxana Troi episodes are largely not a good time, and this is the absolute worst of them. The story of her pregnancy feels so hammy and forced, and the drama with her and Odo doesn't interest me at all. She also doesn't feel like she has much of a presence in the episode, which is shocking given how she came on so wonderfully strong in TNG. The other plotline with Jake is also uninteresting. It's at least not as bad as the Lwaxana storyline, but it's still so very uninspired (you see what I did there?). Annoyingly our last Lwaxana appearance; they really should have stopped her episodes after TNG's Dark Page; that was the perfect ending for her character.
892) When the Bough Breaks (1988)
TNG 1x16
Writer: Hannah Louise Shearer
Director: Kim Manners
Gene Roddenberry did like his kiddie episodes, didn't he? The idea of 'Atlantis-but-a-planet' is interesting, but the episode wastes the concept on a tiresome kidnapping story. The kids are fine I guess, but I'd also rather not be watching them. Wesley feels kinda out-of-place among them, to be honest, considering how noticeably older he is. I will say that Picard's reaction to the abduction: 'You have just committed an act of utter barbarity!' is a superb bit of acting from Stewart, but other than that there's nothing else I'll praise about this outing.
891) Pen Pals (1989)
TNG 2x15
Writer: Melinda M Snodgrass, story by Hannah Louise Shearer
Director: Winrich Kolbe
This always feels like a short to me, despite its forty-five minute length. No time is spent building up Data and the alien kid's relationship; we just see the kid's first communication, then jump into Data confessing to Picard he's been in contact with a pre-warp individual. So I have no investment in this relationship, which is a shame because Data-plus-kid had the potential to be really sweet. They just didn't put the legwork into it. The resolution is fine.
890) Unforgettable (1998)
VOY 4x22
Writer: Greg Elliot & Michael Perricone
Director: Andrew Robinson
Got to be the most ironic title in Trek history, since this episode is extremely forgettable. It's also mind-numbingly boring: Trek does not have a good track record with single-episode romances, and this has got to be one of the worst. I feel zero connection to the guest character and zero investment in her relationship with Chakotay. The idea of a species that you forget after they've been gone for a while is intriguing, but it is wasted on this insipid romance. This was one of the longest forty-five minutes I've ever sat through.
889) Transfigurations (1990)
TNG 3x25
Writer: Rene Echevarria
Director: Tom Benko
Speaking of dull one-episode romances, here's another one. The idea of a species going through a butterfly-like transformation, that is feared and suppressed by the authorities, is again intriguing. It reminds me of the Jon Pertwee Doctor Who story The Mutants, if anyone's watched that, except it's done less well. Again, the good concept is wasted on a boring romance, this time between Beverly and her patient. This is another one that feels much longer than forty-five minutes.
888) Bread and Circuses (1968)
TOS 2x25
Writer: Gene Roddenberry & Gene L Coon
Director: Ralph Senensky
At this point in TOS Season 2, I just thought: 'Really, Mr Roddenberry? Another Earth parallel? I know you like them, but this is getting ridiculous!' Not only is this a tired repeat of an already done idea, but no explanation is given for why this planet parallels the Roman Empire. In A Piece of the Action and Patterns of Force clever reasons were given, but in this it's just presented as a weird fact. That doesn't fly with me.
And even if they had come up with another clever explanation, they have done this idea, which I don't like very much anyway, way too many times this season. I did have some minor interest in the concept of a Rome that never fell, but not enough to sustain me for fifty minutes. Boring and uninspired to the highest degree. I will say there's one really great scene between Spock and Bones in a prison cell, though, when Bones confronts Spock about how he keeps all his emotions carefully concealed.
887) How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth (1974)
TAS 2x5
Writer: Russell Bates & David Wise
Director: Bill Reed
Similar to Who Mourns for Adonais?, in that it gives us an omnipotent alien, who was once worshipped as a God on Earth, and has returned to take charge of his wayward children, only to ultimately discover they don't need him anymore. This is a much weaker version of that story, however, with a less sympathetic godlike character and less runtime to flesh out the idea.
The episode also takes a weird swerve halfway through, from the setting of Kukulkan's city (a nice location, I must say) to his zoo, which I find much less appealing. This episode had an idea, but it wasn't quite sure how to tell the story. Kukulkan genuinely scared me a little, though, and I did feel sorry for him when he flew off, knowing that his former worshippers had outgrown him. But again, that was done better in TOS.
886) Resurrection (1997)
DS9 6x8
Writer: Michael Taylor
Director: LeVar Burton
Michael Taylor is a curious writer for me. He has written both some of my favourite and some of my least favourite episodes, with little middle ground. This falls hard into the latter category. It's interesting to have someone from the Mirror Universe cross into the Prime Universe, rather than the other way around as normally happens, and it's doubly interesting to have that someone be Mirror Bareil. But the episode falls flat on its face: every scene is just so interminably dull, and, unlike his Prime Universe counterpart, this Bareil has no chemistry with Kira. So boring, so pedestrian, and the absolute worst of the DS9 Mirror Universe episodes.
885) The Paradise Syndrome (1968)
TOS 3x3
Writer: Margaret Armen
Director: Jud Taylor
I think this is the epitome of functional but dull. The story makes sense, the characters' motivations make sense, but that doesn't mean the episode is interesting. I do like the idea of the Preservers, beings who transplanted members of endangered peoples, here the Native Americans, to other planets, but the episode flops. Kirk's memory loss leads to a yawnworthy stay among the Native Americans, filled with predictable tensions and conflicts, and a bland romance. The Spock and Bones B-plot is also boring. I feel a little something for Miramanee's death, but only a little something.
884) Assignment: Earth (1968)
TOS 2x26
Writer: Art Wallace, story by Gene Roddenberry & Art Wallace
Director: Marc Daniels
Star Trek without the Star Trek. Deciding not to focus on the main characters for an episode isn't a bad idea in and of itself, but the characters put in their stead hold little interest for me. The same is true of the plot they work within. This was of course a backdoor pilot for a spin-off that never manifested, and maybe if it had come about I would like this episode much more, but as it stands I find the characters unintriguing and the plot uninspired. The climax is particularly poor, with about seventy different shots of the rocket going into orbit, while the characters mill about and do very little. I want me my Kirk, Spock and Bones back.
883) The Red Angel (2019)
DSC 2x10
Writer: Chris Silvestri & Anthony Maranville
Director: Hanelle M Culpepper
Down here for the same reasons as previous DSC Season 2 episodes I've put on this list. It engages heavily in the twin foul-ups of the Spock's sister storyline and the Section 31 portrayal. I hate the base concept of Burnham being Spock's sister, for reasons I've explained in my previous post, so I despise all their scenes together, that build out this relationship that I wish had never been. And Section 31 continues to be portrayed as a public wing of the Federation, with ships and resources provided by Starfleet, which is godawful.
I will say, however, that I do kinda like the sequence where Burnham has to strap herself to a chair and bare herself to the planet's toxic atmosphere in order to summon the Red Angel. And the reveal that the Angel is not herself but in fact her mother is cool. But this is still a really bad episode.
882) The Storyteller (1993)
DS9 1x13
Writer: Kurt Michael Bensmiller & Ira Steven Behr, story by Kurt Michael Bensmiller
Director: David Livingston
A really messy, weak outing. The A- and B-plots have nothing to do with each other, which isn't automatically bad, but here it just makes the episode feel untidy. Of the two, I prefer the Jake and Nog subplot; it's funny seeing them mooning over the female teenage leader of a settlement who comes to the station. Their getting in trouble to impress her is charming. The A-plot sucks, though: the whole business of O'Brien having to become the protector of this village, from an amorphous cloud villain, is just lame, and the resolution is whatever. It is funny to see O'Brien and Julian in their first episode together, though, and witnessing how much O'Brien doesn't care for the good Doctor at this point. Oh, how times will change.
881) The Arsenal of Freedom (1988)
TNG 1x20
Writer: Richard Manning & Hans Beimler, story by Maurice Hurley & Robert Lewin
Director: Les Landau
A ramshackle adventure with a medley of different storylines, all of which are underwhelming. The best is Geordi's plotline, where he asserts himself as commander of the Enterprise over the *rsehole Chief Engineer of the week, but the other two don't really have any redeeming qualities. The Riker and co storyline is repetitive and the Picard and Beverly storyline is dull. I do like that the threat is resolved when Picard agrees to make a purchase from this dead civilisation, though.
880) Move Along Home (1993)
DS9 1x9
Writer: Frederick Rappaport, Lisa Rich & Jeanne Carrigan-Fauci, story by Michael Piller
Director: David Carson
OK, so I said this wasn't the worst of DS9, but it's still really bad. Though I have to say that, after I watched this with my siblings last year, and had such fun doing so, I've never been able to see it quite so badly. It's bad, yeah, but it's so, so much fun. The best-worst bit is of course the alien hopscotch scene, and I also really have to give credit to Alexander Siddig for playing some brilliant cringey comedy with Julian. The scene where he's trying to wake himself up from a nightmare by screaming? So funny. These (sort of) praises made, this is still a stinker of an episode, with a messy plot, too-silly events, and some serious overacting from Armin Shimerman at the end. Definitely something best watched with friends or family.
Allamaraine, count to four,
Allamaraine, then three more,
Allamaraine, if you can see,
Allamaraine, you'll come with me!
879) Justice (1987)
TNG 1x7
Writer: Worley Thorne, story by Ralph Wills & Worley Thorne
Director: James L Conway
I love the basic idea of this episode: Wesley runs afoul of a law on another planet and is sentenced to death by their draconian justice system. Then Picard has to struggle with whether to obey the Prime Directive or save his life. But the episode is dragged down by some weird costuming choices and, most of all, the addition of an omnipotent entity that watches over the planet's people. This should have just been an episode about Picard struggling between duty and conscience; the addition of a mega-powerful being steals screentime from this fine idea.
878) A Simple Investigation (1997)
DS9 5x17
Writer: Rene Echevarria
Director: John T Kretchmer
Uuuuugh; another boring single-episode romance. It's an interminable chore to sit through, from beginning to end, with tired, uninspired romantic scenes and an unexciting criminalistic plot surrounding the Orion Syndicate. I also don't like how the Changelings' linking is equated with sex in that one scene. There are a few fun scenes with O'Brien, Julian and Jadzia when they're playing the spy holosuite program (Jadzia's 'Ooh, somebody stop me!', or O'Brien's 'Hi, Odo!'), but that's about it.
877) Such Sweet Sorrow Part Two (2019)
DSC 2x14
Writer: Michelle Paradise, Junny Lumet, & Alex Kurtzman
Director: Olatunde Osunsanmi
DSC wasn't merely content to introduce a sister for Spock who weakened the story of his childhood and family life. They had to make that sister so important in his life that he'd be willing to go with her into the future and leave his life behind. I hate that Kurtzman and co made this decision, as it makes everything in TOS, SNW etc feel like Spock settling for second-best, when in reality he is fulfilling his life's purpose in those series.
I also never connected with any of the DSC original characters, except for Saru, and even with him I don't feel any emotion at their grand final 23rd Century adventure to stop Control. As I've said before, this evil sentient AI story is a tired, repeated idea, and its connection to the terrible portrayal of Section 31 makes it worse. As a result of all this don't give a single crap about any of the grand-scale action in this episode, and I feel nothing for the loss of the Discovery crew to the far future. I will say that this episode did at least propel DSC into the 32nd Century, which would end up saving the series from being irredeemably awful, and it sets up the phenomenal SNW (although we didn't strictly need all this for SNW to work).
876) Vis a Vis (1998)
VOY 4x20
Writer: Robert Doherty
Director: Jesus Salvador Trevino
A vapid story about Tom feeling dissatisfied with his life on Voyager, and getting replaced by a shape-stealing alien. The concept for the alien is solid, but the execution doesn't fly. It ends up being a limp episode that drags quite a bit, with a bland character arc for Tom at its centre. Shoutout for the appearance of Dan Butler as the alien's main form, though; he played the testosterone-fuelled Bulldog Briscoe in my favourite comedy, Frasier.
That's it for now. Thank you very much for reading, and Live Long and Prosper!

"That’s the reason you should never be given control of a Star Trek show and why Mike McMahan’s appointment is as self-destructive and ruinous for the franchise as the Genesis effect.
After four seasons, you really have to pinch yourself that a man whose qualification for writing Star Trek was running a Twitter account for an imaginary TNG Season 8, which imagined plots like Worf’s testicles inflating to the size of a moon and producing their own gravity, and Picard’s head tipping into a time hole and rejuvenating his scalp to the point where new hair threatened to fill the ship and suffocate all on board, is now in a position where the choices he makes about legacy characters may actually become Star Trek canon. "

Quotes:
"Another year, another season of Lower Decks – the animated Star Trek encyclopedia, with its continuing mission to remind you that there was once such a thing as Star Trek, and it was good, and produced television and movies brimming with vivid moments and iconography that one day, in the creatively inert future, would become a reference library for shallow hacks who’d raid it for ideas, as they sought to continue the adventure without an original thought.
It’s hard to believe such an, er, enterprise could be sanctioned as official canon, or be a standard bearer for the brand , but season four of the show Beckett Mariner would call “the decks”, introduced a new threat to the Star Trek universe. No, not, and I can hardly believe I’m typing these words – Nicholas Locarno’s Nova Fleet, but Mike McMahan’s long-gestating ambition to occupy and colonise Star Trek canon.
In reviews of past seasons, we speculated that inevitably, McMahan, like any frustrated fan fic writer, would start to worry less about the jokes (which is a bad idea in a show that desperately needs some) and more about his show’s place in the celestial firmament. After all, one wouldn’t want to be a Star Trek showrunner and have a series that’s entirely inconsequential and has no life independent of those stories whose vitality it parasitically sucks away at to tell its own tall tales.
No, someone in the Lower Decks writers room wants to be part of those beloved TNG, Voyager and DS9 stories, and so, in this latest batch of what Beckett Mariner would call “eps”, this animated non-entity got busy sequelising.
There were weak comic follow-ups to Voyager’s “Tuvix” (the premise being the joke, this was like Scary Movie following Scream), a DS9 follow-up featuring Rom and Leeta, and an egregious and silly sequel to TNG’s “The First Duty” and, in an act of furious masturbation, “Lower Decks”, in which Nicolas Locarno’s story was picked up with all the care and attention of a late-transformed Seth Brundle trying to groom his pet gibbon.
Locarno’s story had, effectively, been told – he became Tom Paris due to the idiotic notion that Locarno couldn’t be redeemed (why not, you might ask?) – and his redemption arc played out in the Delta Quadrant over seven years. But the decision of Voyager’s producers not to literally pick up the character, had the unforeseen and terrible consequence that he was still an exploitable TNG reference, and so we get the Lower Decks version, in which the character has curiously morphed into a megalomaniac, incited mutinies on a dozen ships, and formed a fleet of mavericks who’ve requisitioned a Genesis device (because apparently they’re been mass produced by 2380) for leverage over the Federation.
This ends in a re—run of Wrath of Khan’s nebula battle, and Locarno becoming part of a new planet which is named in his dishonour. I’ll bet you 5000 bars of latinum that you didn’t envision that end for the character when you last saw him in 1992.
If you didn’t have a single original thought in your head, and you were minded to asset strip Trek of old, it’s the kind of ending you might have come up with. That’s the reason you should never be given control of a Star Trek show and why Mike McMahan’s appointment is as self-destructive and ruinous for the franchise as the Genesis effect.
Lower Decks seemed so harmless, if pointless, when the worst it could do was feature some Binars, or reference “Time’s Arrow” with a Mark Twain holodeck simulation, or re-run a 40-year old Monty Python gag about a cute little creature being a ravenous killer. But this is a show that’s fast realising it’s the only TNG-era show in town, so has cart blanche to keep raiding the archive to sate its own, self-eating, franchise-weakening tendency. Season 5 is in production, and fuck only knows what horrors this writers’ room of clueless geeks have in store in the episodes bought and paid for. Tom Riker living on a planet with a cloned Deanna Troi? An aged but very much alive Tasha Yar, enjoying the good life on Romulus until a liberated Armus holidays there? Reginald Barclay’s drumhead trial for sex crimes?
Don’t imagine it can’t happen. Lower Decks has a taste for it now. Fans who can tell the difference between pastiche and the real thing will hope and pray that Star Trek: Legacy or something like it gets the green light. Not because Cobra Kai in space is a good idea either, but if the world of ‘90’s Trek is going to continue, let it at least be with some pretensions to dramatic integrity. If not, it’s clear who and what will step in to fill the void.
The show’s one good move this year was Vulcan T’Lyn becoming a regular. The only character who could plausibly transfer to live action Trek, her deadpan undercutting of the hysteria around her has been a tonic and perhaps an acknowledgment that the mania, unchecked, was exhausting for the audience as well as mirthless."

Blaze 3: Demonic Arc 5: Immortal Sins³
Last time. Sid, Phil and Fasha got into battles with the Anti-Sapiens. They managed to defeat their enemies. Afterwards, they rest up and had lunch. Sid asked Rischardo a question. Find out what it is. Right now. A crow is flying around. Rischardo" What is it?" Sid" I just thought about it. Is Velencya your wife?" Rischardo" How did you know?" Sid" You see, me and my friends encountered her. She said that she is Velencya, Queen of Underworld. Eyashi used this technique that sent her to a portal. She then said her mission isn't over. Whatever that meant." Rischardo" So you're the ones she talked about. Velencya's mission was our daughter and son. They've escaped the the Underworld somehow. There names are Ira and Danly Inies." Sid" Ira is your daughter?" Rischardo" You know Ira too?"
Sid" Eyashi found her and raised her. She then became our teammate. That didn't last. One day we didn't see her or found her." Flashbacks shown. Rischardo" That's good. Somebody was watching over her. They are actually Anti-Sapiens." Sid" I don't believe this." Rischardo" When they were younger, their behavior changed. After seeing the marks, we tried to ignore it. One night they tried to kill us. This would happen again. From that point, they weren't our kids anymore. They ran away. They think we want to kill them but we want to talk. That's why I came to the Surface World." Flashbacks. Sid" Wow. At first, I thought you were here to destroy us humans. But there have been demons here on Earth. Not as of late. We've been dealing with the demons since I saw you the 1st time."
Rischardo" That must have been my Greater Demons. It seems they have been causing trouble. I came through the Surface World alone. I must have left the portal opened. I see. I'm going to have a good talk with them." Sid" That's why I thought you were behind it but it makes sense to me. I never saw you killed anyone." Rischardo" If you see demons appear then you know." Sid" Interesting talk. I'll make sure to be on the lookout for your kids." Rischardo" Who's this Eyashi, I kept hearing about?" Sid" He's our master and he's pretty strong. He might be worthy." Sid takes Rischardo to Eyashi's and explains everything. Rischardo challenges Eyashi. The fight is over. Rischardo" Just like you said. He's strong. The only person who I had my best fight with, was the person I took the throne from." Sid" Why don't you join us?" Be apart of Team Blaze.
Rischardo" Me join you, don't make me laugh. However. I am pretty hungry. You guys got a place to eat?" Eyashi" But you're a demon? It is too noticeable." Rischardo" Nonsense. When demons travel to the Surface World, we have these human disguises. Watch this." He is in human form now. Eyashi" Wow that's something. I bet I could create the same item that does that." Sid" Probably so." Rischardo" So are we going to eat?" Eyashi" Sure. I know a place." Demons are shown about to attack. Demon1" Stop! Is that who I think?" Demon2" It is. It's Lord Rischardo." Demon1" What's he doing here? He is not supposed to be back at the Surface World." Demon2" Lets retreat for now and tell the others to back out." Sid" It seems you demons call Earth the Surface World. Just like the spirit beings call it Earth Realm."
Rischardo" That's because the Earth is right above the Underworld. It is the first world we see when we escape the Underworld. Or we are at the surface." Eyashi" I did not know that. Can demons enter the Spirit World?" Rischardo" Only demonic rulers can. There are these invisible doors or portals that must be destroyed in order to enter. The demonic rulers have the power to break the portals." Sid" A demon king makes sense. Having all of the power. So how was life as a kid?" Rischardo" I grew up poor and was always getting into fights." They're going to the hUMOr(name in shop) Umo's Cafeteria. Sid" Wait we're going to my mom's shop. I know this direction." Keira Umo" Sid is here and who's your friend?" Sid" Oh this is Rischardo." Keira Umo passes out and says" The demonic king(Sid talked about him). Sid" He's in his human disguise." Erika" He's quite handsome."
Rischardo" And you are the most cutest female human I've ever seen." Erika" Hey there big boy! Want to go one on one wi..." Keira Umo" Mom!! Stop it. You're embarrassing me." Erika" Relax. I was having some fun. Sugar." Eyashi" I had no idea that Rischardo had great sense of humor." Rischardo laughs and says" I bet you can't out eat me?" Eyashi" Is that a challenge?" Rischardo" Hell yeah!" Both say" Lets eat!" Rischardo is the victor. Rischardo" Guess I win. There is something I have say to you. I'm going to be staying here a little longer." Sid" That's great. There is something I need you to do for me (smiling)." Minutes later. Rischardo" Are you Phil and Fasha?" Phil" Who wants to know?" Fasha" Who are you?" He draws his blade and a says" Time to die!" He swings his blade but says" I got you." He laughs and says" You should have seen the look on your faces." Fasha" What is going on here?" Phil" Is this some kind of joke?"
Sid comes. Phil" Of course you were behind it." Fasha" Who's he?" Sid" I think he should explain himself." Rischardo" I'm Rischardo Inies. The Demonic King." Fasha" Nice try. You can not be Rischardo." He turns back and shows them. Rischardo" Now do you see?" Phil" That's a pretty neat trick." He's in human form now. Rischardo has talk with Phil and Fasha. He's going to be training them with Sid. Maybe the others as well. Rischardo shows off his appearance to the others. Night time. MaXx is going over to Erika's house. He enters Sid's room. MaXx" What up son? How are you doing tonight?" Sid" Fine dad. I suppose. Do you have something to say? You don't just come over for no reason. In fact, you are never over here." MaXx" OK. There is also a reason where the Spirit Cannon name comes from. I once was in Spirit World." Sid spits his drink out. Sid" Get out of here. Really. You and these stories."
MaXx" I saw this blade fall from the sky. Then I called her Aiga. A spirit being appears and wants to take it back. He told me it was an accident. He kept calling it Icuras. He did managed to take it. When he went into the portal, I did to. I only had Aiga for a couple of hours. Now that you think of it, his name was Doega. That's it, Doega. Does that sound familiar?" Sid" He's still working for the Spirit Guardians. That's correct." MaXx" I got into a fight and used my then Soul Rizer. He called it a Spirit Cannon. Humans aren't supposed to do Spirit Cannons, because they cost too much spirits and takes a toll on the body. He showed me his. When in the Spirit World, it is much faster to absorb."
Sid" If I would've did the did the Spirit Cannon in the Spirit World, that would have been cool." MaX" When he'd called it the Spirit Cannon, the name was changed. If you want me to keep going, I will." Sid" Of course. I want to see how you left." MaXx" I managed to take the blade." Sid" I can't believe you did all of this for a blade." MaXx" That was the old me. I ended up running away but I came across spirits beings and that's where my Dark Seal interrupt. Then I was able to take them out. I actually started a killing spree. A couple of people feared for their lives. My form would wear off and that's where I met Spyro. I never thought I'd meet him again" Sid" Let me guess, you battle. Right."
MaXx" He wanted me to surrender, so played into his game. I put my hands up and had my back turned. However. I was only playing around and used a sourd slash. It didn't last long. King Spyro shows up and uses his blade on me. I woked up behind bars. This place was huge. No enormous. It was like a special world. You could literally get lost. Now the part of the story is quite interesting. You see son, I have no soul." Sid" Come again? Are you serious?" MaXx" Before I continue, I have to go back a bit. Remember when I came back. I told you that I fought this strong opponent l." Sid" Yeah. So. MaXx" That was a lie. I fought a mere soul and died. I couldn't believe it. Me dying to a soul. That is not me. I heard these mysterious voices. I wanted to live again, so I sold my soul to the devils. I didn't want to tell anyone because it was embarrassing. I don't want to keep it in. You are the first person I've told." Sid" Wow. No heart or soul. That doesn't bother me. You'll always be my father. No matter what you've done in the past." MaXx" Thanks son."
Sid" You should get this made into a movie." MaXx" Maybe I will. Let me continue. I had these bandages on me and my Dark Seal had been removed. I had to retrieve it. The cells were unisex, until it was time to sleep. I met this lady named Chinshe. She helped me and this other guy named Meno Hunoka escape." Sid" My dad escaped the the Spirit World's prison and you are still here, after all those years." MaXx" Damn straight. She was unable to leave. They were both useful. Meno looked like a creature. He helped me get my Dark Seal back. We took portals and used them in separate locations. Meno talked about wanting to visit Earth and whatnot."
Sid" So you used a portal to escape." MaXx" My Dark Seal was the reason I didn't want to come home. I didn't want my dark side to interfere with you and Fatha's lives. It already cost me. Imagine a young Sid having to deal with it. Now I am done." Sid" I respect your decision dad." MaXx" I enjoyed spending time with you." Diffent day. Eyashi is with Team Blaze. CJ and Cumi are there to. Eyashi" Judging from the reports, there's been a lot demons trying to the rid the power sources. If we can stop them, then the power will be safe. I actually think that they are trying to cause a blackout of some sort but that's just me. They are in different areas."
CJ" This sounds fun. Can't wait to get started." Eyashi" Have to see who goes where." Demons are together. Demon male" We'll make everything pitch black. The humans won't see it coming. Get it!" He starts laughing. Demon female" That was a lame joke." Demon male" You have no humor. It is was hilarious." He continues to laugh. Demon female" Can we get serious, finally?" Demon male" Sure. Whatever you say(chuckles)." More demons are are already on the task. While Eyashi and the others were talking, the lights go out. Eyashi" That can't be? It is way to early." CJ" I guess it's time to start." Sid" You are sure eager."
CJ" It's been a while since I've used my power." The others use their fire but it goes on out. CJ" Now you know we can't do that." Screaming is heard. Phil" What's going on? Wait. Somethings here." Cumi" There's these special demons." Light returns. Phil is with Cumi. Phil" Where's everyone gone? We have to find them." Cumi" What if they come back?" Phil" If you stick with me then we'll be safe." Cumi" Wait! Stop! There are traps up ahead." Phil" Thanks for the look out. Could you tell me where they are?" Cumi" Sure." She points at the locations. Eyashi and Fasha are together. Fasha" Wow. Look at the designs. Do you know where we are Eyashi?" Eyashi" That's a statue of a monkey and Mo Kiodo. He's the president of this area. Monkey Temple." Mo Kiodo's name comes from the word monkey.
Fasha" How did we get way out here?" Eyashi" beats me." Fasha" There're actually people living here." They look around. Eyashi" Look look. What do we have here(has a goofy smirk)? It's a blade. It would be a nice collection with my blades or do you want it? It is nice looking. So what do say? Do you want it or not?" Fasha" Well it is a very nice. Well maybe. Wait! What am I saying? That would be stealing. Besides it is in a display cage anyways(arms crossed and looking up)." Eyashi" I see your point." He uses his wind to blow it back. Eyashi" Woops. It is on the floor(talking funny)." Fasha" I guess I have to pick it up(talking the same way)." She picks it up. She swipes it around. Fasha" It's very flexible." Eyashi" See. I told you. Now you have a new blade. What are you going to call it?"
Fasha" That's easy. Rudiaslaudia. It comes from my favorite character's blade." Eyashi" That's good." Rudiaslaudia resembles Renji's blade from Bleach. Modified flail. Eyashi and Fasha calls others but they don't know where they are. Next scene. Sid is with CJ and are at a sandy area. Lots of trees around. CJ" We're in a sandy area? Doesn't make sense." Sid" You're telling me." Sand demons appear. CJ" It's about time. I finally get to show my skills." Sid" You have a strong love for competition." CJ" Of course I do." Doesn't use weapons. Flowers are her weapon. She uses her finisher. Flowers come from the ground. They wrap them up and squeezes their body's to death. Has other finishers to. CJ" How's that?" Sid" That was fast. You took out all of them." CJ" Got to be quick Iucan." A wave of sand wipes them out.
Once it is over, CJ is nowhere to be found. Demons appear. Something dark and tiny falls then crawls inside Sid's body. It looked like Genesis. He takes them all out. He runs into a different one. He's joined by a lady. Has black pigtails. He has a half human and demon face. Yellow hair. Sid" It is his human form." Demon" What are you staring at(already weak and holding his face)? I ought to take your eyes off your face." Sid" I like to see you you try it. I'm going to take you out now!" Demon" Be careful what you wish for kid. You just might get it." Lady" You just had a fight earlier. There is no need to hurt yourself." He gently brushes her back. He transforms into his full Demon Wolf. Voice different. Demon Wolf" Relax, will ya. I got this."
Demon Wolf vs Sid Iucan. Despite being already injured, he's not going down. He's to fast for Sid to spot. He picks up speed and creates a tornado using the sand. Sid manages to block most of his attacks. Sid uses his Burning Slash but he appears behind him and says" Hey kid. Right behind you. I thought I was the one who was weak here and you still can't get me. Isn't that a shame?" Sid continues to struggle. Sid" If I keep this up, I'm dead!" Suddenly, Sid's body begins to change. Looks like the Prince of Persia turning into the dark prince. Sid looks like Genesis. This is not Sid. Demon Wolf" What happened with that other guy? It don't matter." Darkness" It is about time I'd had some freedom. Now I'm bout to show you who's in contact(smiling)." Sid whom is in conscience form says" Where am I? I can't move. I can't see my body. I can feel movement." Darkness" Don't worry kid. I'll take really(reeeally)good care of your body."
Sid" What's going on out there?" Darkness dominates. The Reaper Sajettus becomes Dark Reaper Sajettus or Dark Sajettus. He uses some dark attacks. Demon Wolf uses his finisher. Claw Slash. Demon Wolf" It's clawboring time. Get it." His nails become sharper then glows. He runs toward the person and cuts them with a powerful effect. After running, you'll quick spirit dash. Darkness blocks it and counters. Demon Wolf" No way. He's increased his power tremendously." Darkness" I'm getting bored. It's about time we end this. If you know what I mean." He charges his body and says" Sen Bon Senchow! Bon voyage!" A powerful electrical explosive wave. The circle/range gets smaller. Also called Dark Pulse Assail. Darkness turns back to Sid. He's pretty banged up. Sid" Did I do that? But when?" Demon Wolf" Fool. Another being took over." Sid" Another being? What's he mean?" Demon Wolf does quick spirit dash attacks. Sid is unbalanced and falls into a sand pit. Large hole. Is he dead?
Demon Wolf" I guess that took care of him." The ground begins to shake. Sand shoots up from the hole. The sand disappears and Angry Sid appears. Demon Wolf" Another one. How much do you have left?" Sid" This is all I need." Both ingages in quick combat. Sid adds his blade to the to the fight. Demon Wolf uses quick spirit dashes again and tries to throw Sid off. He tries to stab Sid but blocks using his blade. Sid is being slid back, while his claw is scrapping the blade back. He swings the Demon Wolf off. Both begin to charge up. Sid charges his blade and Demon Wolf charges his claw. The run towards each other and both say" I win!." Burning Impalememet and Claw Slash connect at the same time. Forms wears off. They are both in the air. Leaning on each other to stay up. They fall hard to the ground. Sid uses his chin to crawl to his opponent.
Demon Wolf glances at Sid's neck charm and says" What are you doing Bosch's necklace." Sid" Wait! How do you know Bosch? Who are are you?" Demon Wolf is very weak and barely can talk. Sid" Come on tell me. Don't die on me." Demon Wolf" I know you're an Iucan aren't you?" Sid" How do you know?" Demon Wolf" We are very close, because I am your older brother. Sidney Haruka." He passes out. Sid" Brother? I have a brother? Hold on man. I am going to keep you alive." The lady comes over and comforts him. What will happen next time? Will his brother die? Find out next time on Part⁴. "To Be Continued"

More of my late night spree purchases are rolling in. Thoughts?
I purchased a handful of bags from the gate a while ago and I have one more coming in. I used different sellers so I could compare quality.
These 2 came today (see post history if you are interested in the others) They were only packed in bags no bubble wrap or boxes, just the dusters. I can't add pictures for both here so I'll separate into 2 posts.
The checkers one is very stiff and doesn't feel like leather. The lining is nice though. The stitching is very even and neat. The red edging feels plastic-y and is uneven on some of the corners and edges. From afar everything looks crisp though. Pouch is fully usable and can clip onto the ring inside the larger bag. Luckily it doesn't smell like chemicals.
I wouldn't mind using this for errands. Lots of authentics in my city but most folks are laid back and no one seems to becalling anyone out lol.
How do you rate it? I love to hear your feedback because it helps me learn.

Bidonjour !

2024.05.31 13:52 WhovianTrekkie_6366 My Star Trek Ranking, Part 1: Intro & 919-901

Hello! I was previously on this site as 'MachineCogs', but I had some personal difficulties so left. But all's well now and I'm very excited to be beginning this series of posts I have planned. I'll just explain them first.
So, I love Star Trek. Like a lot. Like a crazy obsessional amount. I also love ranking things. So, now that I've finished my monumental Trek rewatch, plus the final season of DSC, I'm going to do a massive ranking of the entire franchise: every individual episode, every film, and every minisode. I've already done the ranking itself (added in the last season of DSC yesterday), and now will be laying it out here from worst to best. I'll be doing it in waves of 25 after this initial post, and will try to do it daily.
Before I get into it, I want to say that everything I am going to say is purely my very fallible opinion. If you think my choices are only logical, please say so! If you think my choices bring dishonour to the Empire, please say so! I really love discussing Star Trek with people and hearing all sorts of different views, so don't hesitate to comment if you want to!
Also, to further clarify, this ranking will include every episode of all 11 TV shows, all 13 films and all 15 minisodes (spread across Short Treks and Very Short Treks). So spoilers for all of it. I'm so excited for this. Without further ado, here I go. Engage!
919) These Are the Voyages... (2005)
ENT 4x22
Writer: Rick Berman & Brannon Braga
Director: Allan Kroeker
I doubt anyone will take issue with my placing this dead last. On my rewatch I realised I truly love ENT, and this ending ruins the series in every conceivable way. Sure, there's no way ENT could have had a fully satisfying finale, since it was cut short by about three seasons, but literally anything would have been better than this.
Firstly, the decision to have the final episode set on the holodeck of the Enterprise-D, with the whole thing circling round Riker and Deanna rather than the ENT characters, is absurd and disastrous. I get that they wanted this to function as a finale for Star Trek as a whole for the forseeable future, but this should first and foremost have been the ENT finale, and focused on the ENT characters. As it stands, they're sidelined in their own show as the entire thing is told from the TNG characters' perspective. It also takes place within the plot of The Pegasus for some reason, and the episode plays out a weak version of Riker's arc in that episode.
However, the crap doesn't stop there. The story the ENT characters are involved in is so small and anticlimactic: it's just a run-of-the-mill rescue story. Even Jeffrey Combs can't salvage it. Additionally, and most egregiously for me, is the despoilation of Trip and T'Pol's romance. I'll say more about what I think of it in later posts, but suffice to say I love it. Thus, I was infuriated when this episode says nothing happened between the pair after where we left off in Terra Prime; an utter waste.
And, of course, we then have Trip's death. Again, it's just such a small death, and serves only to sever a great character from Star Trek. Truly awful, as is the fact that Archer is cut off before he can give his speech at the founding of the Federation. The closing reading of the 'To Boldly Go' speech by three Captains of the Enterprise is hella neat, but it does not make up for how much of a nightmare this episode is. It feels so separate from the rest of ENT that I generally ignore its existence, especially since we were given a satisfying finale in the form of the previous episode, Terra Prime (more on that one later). In summary, an anticlimactic dreg that undermines the entire cast of ENT.
918) Light and Shadows (2019)
DSC 2x7
Writer: Ted Sullivan, story by Ted Sullivan & Vaun Wilmott
Director: Marta Cunningham
There are two main reasons I believe DSC Season 2 to be the worst season of Star Trek ever made. One is the portrayal of Section 31, which I will go into more detail on later, and the other is making Burnham Spock's sister.
I hate this decision so much because of how it is detrimental to Spock's character. One of the most compelling things about him from TOS was the story of his lonely childhood on Vulcan, ostracised by his peers and misunderstood by his father. It established how he didn't have a true home until he came to Starfleet, and set up his struggle between his Vulcan and human sides. Giving him a sibling who is also a misfit on Vulcan dilutes the story of his family life and weakens his character.
This episode is down lower than any other from DSC Season 2 because it deals very heavily with Burnham's role in Sarek's family, and demonstrates all the reasons I so dislike it. As well as disrupting Spock's story with his parents, I'm also left yearning for Burnham to have been given her own, original character, Vulcan foster parents. I adore the idea of a human raised by Vulcans, but why did the DSC writers feel the need to have Burnham raised by Sarek and Amanda? It weakens her story as well as Spock's.
The other plot with Captain Pike and Ash Tyler is also very bad, as it, like every other episode with them in DSC, fouls up the portrayal of Section 31. Tyler gives a defence of Section 31 to Pike, and it's framed in such a way that the audience is meant to accept it. The entire point of Section 31 is that they are an indefensible organisation; a group who betray everything the Federation stands for, causing death and devastation in other civilisations. Of course the people working for Section 31 believe what they're doing is right, but the audience isn't meant to agree with that. Portraying Section 31 as something that is morally acceptable fundamentally undermines Star Trek's optimistic future. The plot about the AI from the future is fine but boring.
917) Shades of Grey (1989)
TNG 2x22
Writer: Maurice Hurley, Richard Manning & Hans Beimler, story by Maurice Hurley
Director: Rob Bowman
And here we have the Star Trek clips show. Goodness knows this format is frustrating enough in a twenty-two minute comedy: in a forty-five minute production it's excruciating. The set-up, with Riker jabbed by an alien plant, isn't terrible, but the memories it leads into are a real chore to sit through. Going into them completely kills the tension, until the fast-paced final sequence, but even that is still unimpressive. Obviously there was nothing more they could have done for this one, what with the writers' strike, but wouldn't it have been better just to cut the season to 21 episodes?
916) Turnabout Intruder (1969)
TOS 3x24
Writer: Arthur Singer, story by Gene Roddenberry
Director: Herb Wallerstein
I am a firm believer in not holding an old TV show to modern standards; it's entirely unfair. TOS has multiple moments of sexism throughout its run, but mostly it's a stray comment or a small element. Those I can easily ignore. But this... the sexism is so fundamentally built into the episode that I just can't tolerate it.
It's not just a case of one line in this episode; the whole thing is one massive misogynistic message, namely that women are too emotional and unstable to be Captains. Janice Lester's desire to be a Captain is portrayed as unreasonable and beyond her natural abilities. We see her becoming increasingly unstable throughout the episode, ultimately losing control of the Enterprise because of her violent emotions.
This message that women are too emotional for a Captaincy is simply disgusting, and it's all capped off by Kirk's final line that 'She could have been as happy as any woman... If only... If only' As in if only she'd been happy to be a woman, which means not being a Captain. That kind of thinking just makes me want to throw up. This is an episode best consigned to the dustbin of history, with Janeway giving it the middle finger.
915) Code of Honour (1987)
TNG 1x3
Writer: Katharyn Powers & Michael Baron
Director: Russ Mayberry
We've had the sexist episode, now we have the racist episode. I decided to put this above Turnabout Intruder because I feel that, had the alien species been cast multiracially, then the demonisation of black people would have been avoided. I mean the episode would have still been a sh*t production about a lazily realised honour-bound people, but at least it wouldn't have been racist.
As it stands, this episode portrays black people as brutes and barbarians, with the men abducting women and betraying their wives. A shame that one of the episodes focusing on Tasha Yar is so offensive; but even aside from this it's still uninspired and uninteresting. A vile portrayal of black people; it's truly shocking and disturbing that Star Trek, which was and is such an anti-racist franchise, could ever contain such a horror as this.
914) Project Daedalus (2019)
DSC 2x9
Writer: Michelle Paradise
Director: Jonathan Frakes
This epitomises the terrible portrayal of Section 31 nu-Trek, and especially DSC Season 2, peddles. This episode is centred around the Discovery crew breaking into Section 31's base. Section 31 does not have a base. They're a shadowy, rogue organisation, that exists outside the government of the Federation and pursues its own agenda. They have their origin in an obscure part of the Starfleet Charter, but that's as far as their public presence goes. If you make them a public wing of Starfleet, like DSC Season 2 does, then that makes it seem that Starfleet condones their activities, which they would never do, and suggests that their actions are morally acceptable, which is an awful, un-Trek thing for Trek to do. This is an attribute which affects virtually all of DSC Season 2, but it's at its worst here.
Aside from this central issue, I'll just say that the Control storyline is dull and uninspired; we've seen sentient computers trying to destroy all organic life before, in Star Trek and other science-fiction. Ariam's death is fine, but am I really meant to care? So much weight is attached to this character I haven't connected with at all.
913) The Way to Eden (1969)
TOS 3x20
Writer: Arthur Heinemann, story by Michael Richards & Arthur Heinemann
Director: David Alexander
This is just... bizarre. And not in a good way. It makes sense that TOS would do an episode about the hippy movement, and it makes sense that they would have the Space Hippies be anti-technology. However, the hippies are just so cartoonish and laughable that it ends up derailing the whole episode. Any meaningful commentary on how technology has perhaps taken over 23rd Century life is drowned out by all the Space Hippies' weird antics, from shouting 'Herbert!' at Kirk to throwing concerts. I will say I do quite enjoy Charles Napier's singing, though; he's definitely the best of the hippy characters. The end reveal that Eden is an acidic, poisonous planet is pretty cool and gruesome, but that doesn't make up for this fever dream of an episode. I do not reach.
912) Up the Long Ladder (1989)
TNG 2x18
Writer: Melinda M Snodgrass
Director: Winrich Kolbe
I think this would have been much better if they'd dropped the comedy Irish folk, and just had the episode be about the decaying society of clones. I picture an episode where, asked for their genomes by the colonists, the Enterprise crew must struggle with the moral dilemma of whether they should let a society die or let other versions of themselves walk around, harming their sense of individuality. They knock on the door of this with Riker's plotline, but it's portrayed too quickly and simplistically: he just kills his clone and nobody speaks against it.
As for the episode we actually got, it's a messy debacle, where the two plotlines, one of the old-timey Irish colony, and one of the super-advanced clone colony, never really gel. There's some decent comedy with the old-timey colony, like the man who gets drinks from the replicator, but that's about it. Beyond that this episode is just dull and muddled.
911) Sub Rosa (1994)
TNG 7x14
Writer: Brannon Braga, story by Jeri Taylor
Director: Jonathan Frakes
Long before I had ever watched TNG, my mum always used to say: 'Oh, there's an awful one with Beverly's grandmother.' I have to admit that this episode is actually a pretty good time to watch, because it is just so exquisitely awful. For a start, the setting is weird and random: a recreation of the Scottish Highlands. I suppose it was to give a spooky rural atmosphere to the story, but any chance of that is destroyed by how laughable the story itself is. Beverly just gets really horny for this ghost in a lamp, and they end up having ghost sex, until the ghost possesses the dead body of her grandmother. I laughed out loud at the line 'You're not Nana; Nana's dead!' It was the culmination of all the ridiculousness of the episode. Also, my mum has pointed out to me that Beverly's unfiltered desciption of her sexual 'dreams' to Deanna is out-of-character for her, as she is a private person. So bad it's good.
910) The Lights of Zetar (1969)
TOS 3x18
Writer: Jeremy Tarcher & Shari Lewis
Director: Herb Kenwith
And rounding out my bottom 10 we have this, possibly the most boring, pointless episode in Star Trek's history. It features a dull Scotty romance interrupted by a dull space cloud enemy. It just feels like nothing happens in any scene, and I never feel any real tension. The climax is just as boring as the rest of the episode, and is an anticlimactic defeat for the Zetarians. If nothing else, this episode is a good sleeping pill. I genuinely have nothing else to say.
909) The Naked Now (1987)
TNG 1x2
Writer: DC Fontana, story by John DF Black & DC Fontana
Director: Paul Lynch
Ooh, The Naked Now, you so narrowly missed out on being in my bottom 10! TNG is my second-favourite Star Trek show, but it really did have some shockingly bad episodes in its first 2 seasons. This is a lacklustre and laughable sequel to a great TOS episode, The Naked Time. In that episode the disease that ravages the crew wasn't just portrayed as making them all drunk, but as something that brought out their inner emotions. It was a moving way to gain insight into the characters, and it was a good idea to have the TNG encounter the same virus in their first season. But do they use it to the same effect? No.
This episode treats the virus completely as if it is a drunk-disease, and we follow the characters as they engage in all sorts of ridiculous, uninhibited activities. Not least of these is, of course, the renowned 'fully functional' scene. I will give credit to Patrick Stewart and Gates McFadden for playing their nonsense amusingly, but their storyline is still rubbish. In a final blow against the episode, we get the first instance of Wesley saving the ship. This is a terrible trope from TNG Season 1, where Wesley consistently sees things the adults don't and uses his child genius to save the day. It's unbearably contrived and saccharine, here and elsewhere. TNG really had a bad first couple of weeks after the pilot.
908) The Magicks of Megas-tu (1973)
TAS 1x8
Writer: Larry Brody
Director: Hal Sutherland
I think TAS is generally an OK show, but it does have some dreadful outings. This is the worst of them: a too-crazy storyline where the Enterprise crew meet the Devil and discover another realm where magic is real. It's also pretty messy, with Lucien showing the crew around for a bit, before they're all taken to trial by the other denizens of the realm. Kirk's standing up for Lucien, despite the fact that he is known on Earth as Lucifer, is a very nice moment, though, and his magic battle with the head magician is gloriously insane. Spock telling him he 'must believe' in order to perform magic is a bit much, though. Overall, an ugly, untidy episode.
907) The Alternative Factor (1967)
TOS 1x27
Writer: Don Ingalls
Director: Gerd Oswald
Not quite as mind-numbing as The Lights of Zetar, but pretty close. From the beginning my interest in near nil, with some uninteresting special effects and an equally uninteresting guest character in the form of Doctor(s) Lazarus. Lazarus talks a lot about this evil man he's chasing, and it is a neat twist that that man is another version of himself from a parallel universe, and that he in fact is the villain of the piece. However, this leads to a lot of Lazarus jawing about the great threat, with little actually happening beyond this in the episode. His boring interactions with the crew are interspersed with repetitive fight sequences, with the camera turned negative. The scene between Kirk and the good Lazarus is OK, as is Kirk's final line 'What of Lazarus... and what of Lazarus?', but these can't make up for how stupefyingly dull this episode was.
906) A Night in Sickbay (2002)
ENT 2x5
Writer: Rick Berman & Brannon Braga
Director: David Straiton
I've got a few things to say about this episode. The first time I watched this, I thought Archer was being influenced by some malign alien, with how out-of-character he was acting. I love dogs, so I do understand why he's so angry over Porthos getting sick, but he acts so unreasonably and unstably, and it's just nothing like him.
I will say there's some fun to be had with Archer and the brilliantly acted Doctor Phlox, for example when they're chasing the latter's Pyrithian Bat. However, mostly their conversations are the key part of this episode I hate, because it is implied within them that Archer feels sexual attraction towards T'Pol. I love their relationship for being an example of a strong platonic bond between a man and a woman, and so I despise that they tried to imply something sexual between them here. It just makes me go 'Yick'. The conclusion, with Archer dressed up in ritualistic gear to apologise to the aliens he offended, has got to be one of the most ludicrous things I've seen in Star Trek; and again, not in a good way.
905) If Wishes Were Horses (1993)
DS9 1x15
Writer: Nell McCue Crawford, William L Crawford & Michael Piller, story by Nell McCue Crawford & William L Crawford
Director: Robert Legato
Forget Move Along Home; this is the absolute worst episode of DS9. Silly apparitions surrounding a dull anomaly storyline; an unwelcome cocktail indeed. The submissive apparition of Jadzia who's all over Julian is quite funny, but that's the extent of the enjoyment I get out of this. The Rumplestiltskin and baseball player apparitions offer no value and the revelation that they're a bunch of aliens exploring the galaxy doesn't intrigue me. Oscillates between being dull and too silly, and mostly is too silly.
904) Threshold (1996)
VOY 2x15
Writer: Brannon Braga, story by Michael de Luca
Director: Alexander Singer
When Brannon Braga is on his A-Game, he is one of Trek's best writers. This is decidedly not one of those times. The idea, that Tom Paris breaks the Warp 10 barrier, and then strange things begin to happen to him, is pretty good, but the execution is wildly bad. He slowly degrades in sickbay, where we get a bunch of so-so talk from him about his childhood, and he gradually gets more and more unhinged, in a manner which I don't enjoy. These scenes just get arbitrarily cut off, it seems, when Tom breaks out, abducts Janeway and steals a shuttle. Then, of course, the infamous part of the episode happens, as Tom and Janeway transform into salamanders and have little salamander babies. Just what was Brannon Braga thinking when he wrote that? A super weird, unsatisfying execution of a good idea.
903) Once Upon a Planet (1973)
TAS 1x9
Writer: Chuck Menville & Len Janson
Director: Hal Sutherland
The TOS episode Shore Leave was a good idea that ran out of impetus later on. This episode doesn't even have the distinction of having a good idea; it just rinses and repeats its live-action predecessor. The fact that the planet's computer is questioning its purpose after the death of the Keeper is kinda interesting, but ultimately the whole affair falls flat. I don't think I have anything else to say... uh, there's a dull but functional B-story on the Enterprise, I guess? Whatever.
902) Fair Haven (2000)
VOY 6x11
Writer: Robin Burger
Director: Allan Kroeker
Absolutely the worst holodeck episode. I guess I can see the purpose of the idea: lost in the Delta Quadrant, a Captain doesn't have nearly as many opportunities for romance as the rest of the crew. But that doesn't mean I approve of this episode's existence. It's boring time-filler: the holographic boyfriend thing doesn't interest me, and the whole thing feels cheap and faintly absurd. There is one legendary moment: 'Delete the wife', but other than that this is an insult to Janeway's character and an embarrassment to Star Trek.
901) Babel (1993)
DS9 1x4
Writer: Michael McGreevey & Naren Shankar, story by Sally Caves & Ira Steven Behr
Director: Paul Lynch
In contrast to the too-silly episode of DS9 I've just reviewed, this one is one of the franchise's most dull. The aphasiac virus, which makes all the crew start to speak nonsense, feels like an obfuscation on the writers' part, disguising the fact that they couldn't come up with an interesting story. The whole thing is a boring babble, and I'm grateful when it's over.
That's the end of this part. Thank you very much for reading, and Live Long and Prosper!

Ses codes me rendent BLEUE

2024.05.31 09:04 jonokimono LINERLYMPICS 2024 - Preliminary Match #4: Cunard Line's MAURETANIA (1907) vs. CGT's FRANCE (1912).

LINERLYMPICS 2024 - Preliminary Match #4: Cunard Line's MAURETANIA (1907) vs. CGT's FRANCE (1912).
In the third preliminary match Cunard Line’s LUSITANIA absolutely annihilated HAPAG’s Kaiserin Auguste Victoria: 43 votes to 4. Therefore the Kaiserin is eliminated, and LUSITANIA has secured a spot on the Round of 16!
We now move onto the 4th preliminary match: Cunard Line’s MAURETANIA (1907) vs. CGT’s FRANCE (1912)...
https://preview.redd.it/s7zosaehnp3d1.png?width=2150&format=png&auto=webp&s=cc1bdcad2a28569d9d38d0e3b85dbecffc28af9f
MAURETANIA (1907)
Launched only a few months after her sister, the slightly larger and faster MAURETANIA would hold the title of the world’s largest ship for four years (1907-1911) and would hold the Blue Riband for an an incredible 22 years.
Funded through a partnership with the British Government, like her sister she was built to Admiralty specifications in the event of war. Despite being designed to be adapted into an auxiliary cruiser, she served as both a troop ship and a hospital ship.
After the war she was refitted for passenger service, converted to oil burning, and was as popular as ever as the fastest way to cross the Atlantic in style and comfort.
Later in her career she would sport a white livery and would operate ‘booze cruises’ out of New York for Americans wanting respite from prohibition.
Following merger the Cunard-White Star merger in 1934, she was one of the first of the big ships of the amalgamated company to be considered surplus and was scrapped in Scotland in 1935.
FRANCE (1912)
The early 20th century transatlantic trade was dominated by British and German liners. CGT stood up to this competition not by setting out to build the largest liner, but instead focused on a bespoke ship that would be beyond comparison in terms of luxury, comfort and style. FRANCE (1912) was generous and well appointed: first class suites with private bathrooms, and large Baroque Revival public rooms gave her the edge above other more conservatively appointed ships of the time. While never holding the Blue Riband, she had an average speed of a very quick 23.5 knots.
France would set out on her maiden voyage in April 1912, just one week after the Titanic disaster. While successful, her first few years were plagued with stability problems. During the war, she served as an armed cruiser, and was converted into a hospital ship after the loss of the Britannic in 1916.
Following the war she returned to passenger service, but soon passed the baton of CGT flagship to the newer and larger Paris (1921). However, her prestige remained strong and she was converted to an all First Class ship - a rare move for any shipping company to make, and a testament to her role as a status symbol of transatlantic travel.
She remained a well booked and successful ship for the rest of the 1920s, but during the early 1930s her all First Class arrangement was no longer economically viable and she was withdrawn from service and scrapped in 1935.
General notes...
  • Olympic, Normandie and United States are not in the running, as they are the winners three previous editions of the Linerlympics.
  • Titanic will not be competing (her PR manager said she was too busy, besides Olympic has already won for the Olympic class!)
  • I've NOT randomly allocated the pairings. I've instead broadly allocated them based on era, so a fairer comparison can be made that takes into account of their relative design, speed, size, luxury, legacy, and infamy. The clash of eras, etc... will happen in the later rounds.
  • Each poll will be live for at least 36 hours (up to 48). I will screenshot the results, then delete the post (I am mindful of not clogging up the subreddit with closed polls)
  • In the event of a tie in the first round, the length of the ship's career (in months) will be the tie breaker (... I had to think of something!). After the first round, a tie breaker will be votes accrued in previous rounds.
  • Your vote is based on whatever you want it to be (its so subjective!), however if you don't know much about a ship take a moment to Google her and you might be surprised about how legendary some of the lesser known ships stories are.

2024.05.31 07:49 omobinrin_okun Old Stories of Southern Spiritists, Conjurers, and Healers: Marie Catherine Laveau (Laveaux)

Old Stories of Southern Spiritists, Conjurers, and Healers: Marie Catherine Laveau (Laveaux)
A student of Jean Bayou, the voudou queen of New Orleans, a healer, a midwife, a hair stylist, a nurse, Marie Laveau was all of these things and more in her time.
Marie Laveau was born on September 10th, 1801 (some believe 1793-94) in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Her mother, Marguerite and her father, Charles Laveaux both raised Marie on her father’s plantation. Her mother was a freed slave, who was both black and Choctaw Indian. Her father was a creole businessman who bought and sold real estate and slaves. While living on his plantation, he made sure Marie was educated and got her into the hobby and career of hairdressing.
Marie Laveau was a great hair stylist. She had her own salon and had serviced many people of all colors and status’. This got her a lot of publicity and people even caught on to her ability in the “occult”. She was a very gifted clairvoyant and many sought her out for her tellings. People rumored that she only knew what she knew about people through the drama and gossip of those who stepped in her salon.
Aside from her spiritual gifts, Marie Laveau was a devout Roman Catholic. Baptized, attending mass regularly, and giving back to her community, Marie gained the trust of her community regardless of her other practices.
On August 14, 1819 Marie Laveau married her first husband, Jacques Paris, who was a Haitian immigrant.
Fun fact: To this day, Marie Laveau and Jacques Paris’ marriage certificate is preserved in the St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans.
Marie and Jacques had two children together, Marie-Heloïse and Marie-Philomène, who both passed away in their early childhood years.
Jacques worked as a carpenter and later in time mysteriously disappeared. No one knows for sure where he went but some believed that he passed in Baton Rouge in 1823.
Soon after Marie married a white noble french man by the name of Christophe Dominick Duminy De Glapion. They had 15 children who unfortunately died due to the yellow fever outbreak.
Glapion and Marie Laveau lived together for 30 years until Glapion passed in 1855, however they never married due to interracial marriage being taboo with laws against it.
During these years, Marie Laveau was adept in her practice of Voodoo learning under voudou communities, and eventually becoming the student of Jean Bayou. By 1830, she earned her title as Voodoo Queen of New Orleans.
Marie Laveau held all kind of ceremonies and charitable events. With her leadership in the voodoo community she devoted herself to charitable acts. She posted bail for free women of color, paid for the education of orphans, and erected altars for condemned prisoners and prayed with them before they were sent to the gallows, sparing some lives in the process.
Some of the events she held derived from the European pre-Christian celebration of the summer solstice with bonfires, drummings, singing, dancing, spiritual baths, and communal feasts. During her get togethers those who came would always fill her home with altars, flowers, and candles.
She was greatly respected for her knowledge on herbal medicine, her religious status as a devout Catholic who baptized all her children, and the way she gave back to her community. However, there was always some who thought otherwise.
During these times of oppression, even those who were “free” could not congregate in public, so Sunday was their only day of community. Of course, this didn’t stop whites from spying on them and spreading rumors. Saying her work was that of “black magic” and having an evil agenda and even saying things as crazy as holding drunken orgies.
All lies and rumors aside, Marie Laveau was very proud of her work and her abilities. Helping anyone who came to her day or night because she believed any question that a person had she had answers to. Marie Laveau also assisted local politicians and lawmakers with business decisions. She sold Gris-gris, charms, and powders, she granted people’s desires and even confounded their enemies. She was exceptionally good at preforming exorcisms and working with Catholic saints and the Lwa.
Marie Laveau was and still is a huge inspiration to many and a prominent figure in black American culture. She left her mark on the world and made many headlines in her lifetime as the “Queen of the Voudous”, “Priestess of Voudous”, and “The Head of Voudou Women”
She then retired and moved back to her old home on Ann St. and passed away there at age 86 and a large funeral was held in her name and she was buried in the St. Louis Cemetery.
Her obituary The NY Times even stated “there were business men who would not send a ship to sea before consulting her of the probabilities of the voyage.” Just a piece of how impactful she was on her community.
Many still visit her tombstone and leave offerings, and make wishes. People believe their wishes were granted by leaving three X’s on her tombstone, turning around 3 times, knocking, and yelling out their wish. Hence why pictures of her tombstone always contain many offerings and X’s drawn on it. Some call it vandalism, others see it as a sign of continued reverence and seeking aid in their spiritual affairs from her even in the after life.
If your from my Facebook group thank you for your patience as I took my sweet asz time getting this information into text for you all and for everyone else I hope you enjoy this piece of history. Commit it to memory and keep the spirits alive of our ancestors who paved the way for the beautiful cultural practices we take part in today.

2024.05.30 16:04 mcm8279 [Opinion] SlashFilm: "Star Trek's Closest TV Cousin Isn't Sci-Fi – It's Law & Order" "The main characters of "Star Trek" aren't the officers on board Starfleet vessels. The main character is ... Starfleet itself." "Starfleet principles are the star."

"With Star Trek: The Next Generation , Trekkies were unsure how a new Trek series without the classic characters would work. Well, it's all Law & Order in space."
Witney Seibold (SlashFilm)
Quotes:
"While "Law & Order" may feature multiple beloved characters who will stay on their respective shows for many years, they tend to rotate out when a given actor wishes to retire. The shows rarely suffer from multiple, frequent cast changes, however, and they're able to keep telling interesting stories without the benefit of a particular character's point of view. Each character might bring a gruff je ne sais quoi to the series, but after airing for decades, it's become very clear who the real main character is: the criminal justice system itself.
"Law & Order" is comforting to watch because it depicts a criminal justice system operating the way Americans think it does. A criminal commits a crime, and they are apprehended by the police halfway through the episode. Then, in the show's second half, hardworking and intelligent district attorneys swiftly prosecute them. The criminals are jailed in an hour's time, and everything happened swiftly and neatly. Sometimes the bad guys get away, of course, but that was to point out loopholes in the system, loopholes that can now presumably be closed. We love "Law & Order" because the bureaucracy always functions.
That revelation, it seems, is also a way to look at "Star Trek." The main characters of "Star Trek" aren't the officers on board Starfleet vessels. The main character is ... Starfleet itself.
These are their stories
Trekkies of a certain age may recall when "Star Trek: The Next Generation" debuted in 1987. In the media blitz leading up to the show's premiere, many old-school Trek fans expressed consternation that the new series wouldn't work. For many, "Star Trek" couldn't exist without the characters of Captain Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) on board the starship Enterprise. "Next Generation" was to take place a century after the events of the original "Star Trek," and was set on board a brand-new Enterprise with an all-new cast of characters. Certain Trekkies felt that "Star Trek" was a character-based series, and that changing the characters was constitute a heretical and fundamental alteration of what made the show work.
"Next Generation" eventually proved to be just as dynamic and exciting as the original show, and it would go on to run for seven seasons. It might also be considered a "purer" version of "Star Trek," given that creator Gene Roddenberry was a lot clearer in what he wanted out of his series, namely: he wanted to up the diplomacy quotient and assure characters never bickered. Everyone, he felt, could get along this time.
"Next Generation" was so popular that two additional spinoffs launched in the 1990s: "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" in 1993 and "Star Trek: Voyager" in 1995. Both of those shows were contemporaneous with "Next Generation," and both featured crossover episodes with it.
This glut of "Star Trek" in the 1990s introduced Trekkies to a slew of new, interesting characters, but it started to highlight what might have always been true: it doesn't matter who commands a starship, necessarily. It just matters that Starfleet officers do their job well. Starfleet principles are the star.
It doesn't matter who commands a starship, it only matters that the starship is running well
It's worth noting that every "Star Trek" series to date (with the exception of "Star Trek: Picard") is set on board a traveling Starfleet vessel on a mission to trek through the stars. Most of the main characters on "Star Trek" are officers on board said ship, members of a space navy devoted to exploration, science, and expanding the minds of humanity. They wear uniforms and try their hardest to live up to diplomatic, egalitarian principles. They are keen to ply their intelligence and engineering acumen to face dangerous cosmic threats and smooth over the aggressions of warlike enemies.
They are, at the end of the day, devoted to law and order.
An appealing aspect of Starfleet — and, by extension, all "Star Trek" — is that they are a massive, well-functioning bureaucracy. The captains on each show are devoted to peace and abide by a rigidly structured command hierarchy that they rarely break. The chief engineer takes care of the engines. The chief medical officer runs sickbay. The captain is the world's best manager and has a team of employees who carefully delegate. "Star Trek" makes dry managerial spreadsheets a vital part of maintaining its technological, post-war, post-scarcity utopia. When everything works well, it's exhilarating.
As such, we Trekkies are not necessarily here to see Captains Kirk, Picard (Patrick Stewart), Sisko (Avery Brooks), or Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) specifically. We're here to see many people working hard in a cool-ass workplace, all of them abiding by the functional, well-established rules of Starfleet.
Strong characters help any drama, of course, but with "Star Trek," as with "Law & Order," the System is king. [...]"

2024.05.30 14:12 AdmiralBlue85 Double standards on Voyager

Besides the obvious real world answers as to why these things happened, let's think about the in universe reasons.
  1. Fights - B'Elanna Torres or Seven of Nine get into a scuffle and one was nearly court martialed and the other was forced back into quarters confinement but Neelix and Paris get into a fight with hair pasta and Janeway accepts the non answer and moves on.
  2. Taking matters into your own hands - Numerous times where either Chakotay or Seven disobey orders and nothing happens but Tom takes a stand in the ocean planet and gets demoted.
  3. Promotions - Tuvok gets promoted to Lt Cmdr since he is the head of security, Tom gets promoted after being demoted since he's the head of navigation but Harry Kim is the chief of operations but stays an ensign.
  4. Betting pools - Tom got in huge trouble for doing bets with replicator rations but the whole ship does the baby pool in the series finale but that betting is ok.
  5. Interspecies mating without authorization - Chakotay had numerous encounters but Harry Kim does with the generational ship girl and he gets a dressing down by Janeway.
