Hello,
Here's my poor attempt to sell myself like a bad infomercial. My social circle is pretty much limited to people I work with or short conversations with customers. I live in the US on the East Coast but grew up on the West Coast. I have two high-energy dogs, an Australian shepherd mix and huskie mix. I have a 2 year old son. I do enjoy cooking and making new dishes, but I am by far the worst baker. My favorite TV show is the office, please don't say parks and rec is better. I've had many random jobs in the past, with even random stories to go along with. I'm a bit of a nerd, I have a comic collection and random Star Wars collectibles, but I'm not ashamed. I have a few tattoos that have no meaning at all, and I plan on getting more soon. My music taste is stuck in the early 2000s rock, punk, and screamo. I'm just trying to make a friend outside of work.

Is this flank biting?
Hi! I apologize if this is the wrong place to post, but I was just wondering if this was flank biting?
Sirius is a 7 year old chihuahua pug mix with diagnosed anxiety. He doesn’t play with toys, and all enrichment must be edible because he has pica. He’s been doing this for as long as I can remember, but I just looked it up a week or so ago and this is the first time I was able to catch it on camera. Thank you in advance ❤️

Max - 19 weeks old
We got Max at 8 weeks old. He is mostly miniature schnauzer mixed with a little chihuahua. We are 19 weeks old now and he has one haircut done at home. Not the best but overall happy with the outcome for cutting hair myself for the first time. He still has all of his baby teeth, which we call him piranha, he is in such a baby biting mode and those teeth are razor sharp. Overall, we are so happy having Max in our family now. It wouldn’t be complete without him.

2024.05.19 19:42 Alternative_Appeal Training Options for Traumatized Chi

Training Options for Traumatized Chi
Hi all! Here's some background on my approximately 11yo male chihuahua mix:
I adopted him from a shelter in 2016 when he was about 3yo (they didn't know where he came from or anything about him, the vet aged him based on his teeth). I actually chose him because he was the quietest, calmest dog out of like 20 in a pen. He looked like he just wanted out of there so badly and I fell in love right away. He had to be neutered before we brought him home, so he officially joined us a few days later. I already had a 6yo male bichon/shihtzu mix at home but he's always gotten along with other dogs and people so no issues there (neutered as a puppy).
It didn't take long for me to realize the chi was severely traumatized before I got him. Every move I made (literally repositioning my arm) or pillow falling from the couch, or loud noise sent him into hiding for about 20 minutes. I had a doggie door to the outside where I successfully trained him to go potty, but he would bring his poop back inside to eat when I wasn't looking. Vet said this was sign of past abuse/neglect. He would also throw up all the time, and I eventually figured out he needed limited ingredient grain free food and all this weirdness around eating poop and puking up food stopped for the most part. He still throws up after drinking too much water or eating too fast. We do our best to keep him from doing this, but sometimes it happens when we aren't around. I believe this may have something to do with his anxiety around past food insecurity.
He absolutely hated going on walks because every car that passed sent him under a bush, shaking, staying as low to the ground as possible. We would go on not busy streets in our neighborhood but cars still passed and it stressed him out a lot. Because he was around so many dogs and calm when I adopted him, and he got along fine with my dog, I figured he would love the dog park as an alternative to walks. But the very first time there, after about 10 minutes of everything being fine, another dog started chasing him playfully and then other dogs joined in and he was absolutely terrified. He is still terrified of the dog park since that incident (hence we dont go anymore), but loves all the dogs under a certain size he's ever met in a more intimate setting. He will NOT get near big dogs no matter what. Thankfully, he's gotten much better over the years about walks but he has serious leash aggression and barks at people and dogs. We're still actively working on this.
So I know now that I made several mistakes with my traumatized chi early on because I didn't understand he needed very different treatment from my other dog. He is afraid of pretty much everything under the sun and didn't trust me enough for the first couple of years to actually be able to successfully train him. I did crate training and that helped a bit, but his fear mindset was really strong. I just did my best to keep him as happy and healthy as possible even though I could tell he still didn't trust me. I always thought this lack of trust was what was holding us back and did my best to be patient as the trust built.
Many years later we are very securely bonded, he is taking anxiety medication, but there are still a few trauma-like behaviors I can't seem to redirect:
(1) He is better at focusing on me and redirecting on walks, but if a big dog passes I don't exist and he goes crazy.
(2) We recently moved to a house where the backyard overlooks a park. He barks at people when they are just sitting there, like 100 yards away, not even doing anything. People can't even come near our fence because of a big hill, but he hates on them anyway.
(3) The biggest issue-- he hates when we have new people over. If he really knows someone, he loves them. He's a people-loving dog, but new people terrify him. It takes like 5+ times of being around someone for at least an hour for him to not freak out at you upon entering. By freaking out I mean barking incessantly and jumping up on you, no biting. At times, we will think we passed the barrier because he will be cuddling with that person on the couch, but if they make a sudden movement or stand up it's back to terrorizing them. So we clearly have not had much company over since 2016 🫠 but now have this big beautiful house we want to share with friends and family. Is going back to crate training the way here?
I welcome any and all suggestions for getting my Chi to a point where he isn't afraid of something constantly. I know he isn't afraid of me anymore, I am a safety zone for him, but I still can't help him past a lot of anxieties. We have considered a private professional trainer if necessary, but maybe there's something else I'm missing? Thanks for reading this far 😊❤️

Hey there! We rescued a husky, attached. Her name is Aurora, she’s an 1 1/2 year old husky we think shepherd mix! We were curious for any food recommendations we’re trying to do half raw half dry or dry with some raw add ins. As well as any toy recommendations, how to reduce separation anxiety, etc! We’ve done plenty of research and are very excited for this new addition but I wanted to see what you all had to say!

2024.05.19 19:00 ilove2sleep Growth near senior chihuahua mix’s eye…

Link below to photos…My ~11 year old chihuahua mix started growing something in corner of his eye over a year ago that now is so big that it appears to have a vein in it? My vet wasn’t super concerned 6 months ago but it was smaller then. I know growths on senior dogs are relatively normal and d I’d like to wait until November when he’s due for his shots to go in again to save $$ unless this looks like something that requires more urgency. I’m also wondering if it’s something that would grow back if removed, and if a regular vet could remove it or it would require a special eye vet.
Thanks for your help!

2024.05.19 18:02 Fenna7 How/Should I leave a review for nice pets but a NASTY apartment?

This last week I took care of pets (dog walks for the two dogs & drop ins for the two cats).
TL;DR: I walked dogs and took care of two cats for a guy who was gone for a week. The animals were friendly but looked like they could use some basic vet care (shots, de-wormer, flea treatment). But the apartment was NASTY. How do I leave a review for this person/experience?
The Long Story: I did the initial Meet & Greet and was appalled at the apartment (pungent, unpleasant smells - animal smells), dried no-telling (cat vomit?) in various places on the furniture and carpet, kitchen was a mess... then he opens his refrigerator to show me the dog food and it's horrifying - sticky, brown goo on a lot of stuff, meat in a package that is leaking and hasn't been cleaned up... literally the nastiest home I've ever been in. I felt dirty just being in that apartment.
I met the dogs, who were together in the same kennel in a bedroom: a smaller husky and a corgi/blue heeler mix (corgi body, heeler color). He let them out so I could meet them and the corgi mix was excited, friendly, jumping on me (ouch, claws). The husky was very shy and timid and wouldn't let me touch her. The client said he'd only had her a few months and that he thinks she was abused because she's so scared around people.
This person was going to be gone for a week. The dogs were to stay in their kennel while I wasn't there; meanwhile, remember he's only booked me for one 30-minute dog walking session per day. I expressed my concern that the dogs would be locked up in their kennel for 23 hours a day and suggested he board them, either with a Rover sitter who does that (I cannot) or with a boarding service. He wasn't interested in that, and finally mentioned that the did have another friend who would be coming over in the afternoons to check on the dogs. He was like, "I have to keep them in the kennel while I'm not home because otherwise they'll pee and poop on the floor. I tried keeping Jade (corgi) just free in a room but she did this to the door" then proceeds to show me a door that was, and I am not exaggerating here, half a door. Dog had (supposedly) completely destroyed the bottom half of the door, up to like the doorknob. So dog(s) aren't house trained and also appear to be bored/anxious when the owner leaves. Great.
He couldn't tell me how much I should feed them. I asked, he showed me their food (some kind of special refrigerated fresh food subscription thing), canned wet food, and dry food. He just said, "Whatever you think" which is weird, folks. It's weird. He finally said he is trying to put weight on the husky (she was super skinny) and so he just feeds them however much they want. Just... idk.
I asked him about his vet, to which he replied he just "goes to whichever vet is available" when he needs something. I asked if the dogs were spayed, he said no. He also mentioned they had had shots a year ago (I'm guessing just the corgi had had shots a year ago, since he'd already said the husky he'd only had for a few months), but that he hadn't gotten them to the vet yet this year for their yearly shots.
Initially this person contacted me to just do dog walks (which I'm realizing now he probably should have booked me as drop ins and asked me to walk the dogs? I'm not really sure...), but I notice he has two cats as well. I asked him if he intended for me to take care of the cats. He was like, "Oh could you? That would be great." I said I could but that I would charge for that, which he was okay with. He asked me to show him how to add the cats to the dog walks and I had to walk him through how to even get to his profile on Rover on his iPad. He offered the iPad to me to let me navigate and I refused to touch it - it seemed as nasty as the apartment - crusty. I asked about litter boxes and he said "Oh don't worry about it, it'll be fine for a week" - it's two cats (I didn't find the second litter box until the last day I visited, so thought it was just one litter box the whole time), and that also seemed off to me. I did scoop the one litter box I knew about a few times just because I felt bad for the cat.
In my M&Gs, I always get the person's actual phone number but tell them that this is only for emergency purposes, if the Rover app is down or if I can't get a hold of them through the app, and that I always use the app to communicate. I told that thing to this guy. Who then proceeded to just text me stuff throughout his absence. I said something to him once about communicating through the app but he never would so I gave up. He would ask me to do things from time to time, from normal things like "Hey can you check to make sure the AC is on?" to odder things like "Would you turn on my playstation?" and "Would you make sure the hexagon lights are on?" smh
I probably shouldn't have taken the booking, but I did, and after the second day maybe I noticed what looked like worms in the dogs' stool. The corgi was very itchy, so I'm assuming fleas or something. I wrote messages every day after the dog walk and the cat drop in and mentioned the worms and the possibility of fleas and suggested, nicely, that he get them to the vet when he return. Long story short, the animals seemed loved and mostly cared for, but it seemed like either the guy didn't know how to care for animals or... I don't know. I kept thinking to myself, "They have a better life here than in a shelter. They have a better life here than in a shelter."
The rainbow in this horrible experience: the husky, initially extremely scared of me, started to trust me and show me her real personality and was an absolute doll the last few days I was there. I loved gaining her trust!
My main question is: How do I, or should I, leave a review for this person?

2024.05.19 15:17 Nervous-Donut-8621 How to make two dogs friends?

I have a small terrier, who is now 10 years old and my partner has a 5 year old husky-mix, they are both males. We are planning to move in together, but we have a hard time figuring out what to do with the dogs. Obviously we both want to keep them, but here’s the problem:
• my dog lived all his life inside with us, while his dog lives outside in the yard. We could keep this up, but probably mine would scratch the door from the inside and his from the outside all the time.
• they met today for the first time, but my dog was extremely agressive and I was worried they hurt each other
• both dogs are attached to us, that’s why we wouldn’t like to leave them to our parents
Do you know any tips to make them friends? My dog is mainly the problem here, but he never acted this agressive towards any dog before. We brought him to my partner’s house, so he wasn’t protecting his territory, but he actively searched for the situations to attack.

Woodland Bunny🤎
Thank you to everyone who commented and made suggestions on my last post! I ended up getting the Woodland Bashful Bunny because I felt his colors best resembled my bunny's. Kind of like a mix of all my baby's colors. I sleep with my new bashful bunny every night! (Real bunnies sleep in 25 minute increments throughout the day so I can't hold my real baby boy every night. 🥲) This new jelly is my first bashful bunny and is so so cute! I ordered a black kitten to match my cat, too, and I plan on getting the chihuahua once its released to honor my dog. I may even get an orange fuddlewuddle cat to honor my childhood cat, too.

2024.05.19 11:52 Terrible_Bus7103 Adopted a Black Mouth Cur

So my husband and I adopted this beautiful 11 month old girl yesterday. We had never heard of a Black Mouth Cur before. The shelter worker said she was some kind of mutt with lab, and Pitt and Sheppard in there with maybe a chihuahua or a jack russell. We took her home.
The dog looked really elegant to me and not like a usual pitt mix (not super muscular or stocky) I texted a photo to my sister and asked what she thought the breed mix was and she immediately said “that’s a black mouth cur,” and after a quick google I realized that’s our girl.
So the problem is, we live in a small apartment. I run, walk or hike at least 6 miles daily so the plan was to get a sturdy mutt that would be pretty happy with that level of exercise (and two shorter walks in the day) and be a couch potato with me the rest of the time. The shelter said this dog would be a great fit.
Now that I’ve read about curs, they seem like they’d be miserable in an apartment even if I take them out for at least an hour and a half daily. Also, we have a cat (they haven’t met yet, we’ve been sure to follow the instructions for a slow introduction) and I’m a bit worried about the breed’s prey drive. The shelter said she previously lived with cats but I’m starting to feel skeptical about the information I received from them.
Is keeping this dog an extremely bad idea? She is really good natured and I can see she’s super smart but we’re not very experienced as dog owners (we had them growing up but this our first dog together). I don’t want the poor girl to be unhappy or pick up bad behaviors from us. I suspect she came from a household with a lot of land because she has 0 leash training (we were planning on doing group classes this week).
We have lots of resources for training or dog daycare but we’re concerned this won’t be enough if she doesn’t have enough outlets for her energy. If you have any thoughts as a cur owner I’d love to hear them. Thanks for your help!

2024.05.19 07:41 pechjackal I said I would never have a husky...

I said I would never have a husky...
This is Leeta. I got her as a puppy off the streets thinking she may be a border Collie mix, and I am a big herding dog person. Her behavior said otherwise. DNA shows she is part husky. It isn't her highest percentage, but her sassy, hardheaded, and goofy personality is 100% husky. (Her other top breeds were pit/Staffy and German shepherd)
I am happy to say I love her to death. It took a long time for me to bond with her, but now she is my right hand lady. Even her naughtiness is funny now, and as a trainer I never thought that could be the case for me.

2024.05.19 07:02 WaitingForTheBus_ Really bad experience with chihuahua breeder

Long post, sorry.
Be patient with me- My previous dog, I found wandering around a parking lot, so this is my first time purchasing a dog, and I’m afraid I might have encountered a backyard breeder (although it’s hard for me to tell, I’m not good at determining a good breeder from a bad one).
She had her dogs listed on puppies.com, and I wasn’t planning on even getting a dog. I honestly was just scrolling because my old dog passed away this year and I’ve been extremely depressed without him, so looking at pictures of other dogs sometimes cheers me up a little.
Then I stumbled across a puppy that stopped me in my tracks because he looked so similar to my old dog. I contacted the breeder and asked about him. She told me he’s 16 weeks and she really wants to sell him with his brother, but would be willing to to sell just one.
I didn’t know anything about littermate syndrome and thought separating two dogs she said were bonded would cause them anxiety, so I told her I’d get both and put a $500 deposit. She texted me that they are up to date on their shots.
Then, I started doing research on how to potty train two dogs at once, and every single article I read said not to get two puppies from the same litter.
I called back the breeder and expressed my concerns, and told her because of my research, I will only be getting one dog. She got extremely mad and told me she already posted on social media that both have found a home. She then told me that chihuahuas are dogs that need to be with other dogs in the house, and people who have only got one dog from her call her back all the time telling her they wished they had listened and gotten 2. She was throwing so much information at me, telling me how she has sold 2 all the time and not one dog has ever developed littermate syndrome. I told her I’d call her back in the morning with my decision, even though I’d already made up my mind on getting just one. I just wanted to ease the tension.
The next day, I called her back and said I’d only be getting one, and that I was not willing to debate the issue any further because the research was clear. Then, despite me already putting the deposit down, she told me she’s going to call someone else first to see if they’ll take both dogs before she’d give just the one to me.
Later she texted and said the person was not willing, so I could have just the one. To me, this proved she was motivated solely by profit, because if she truly believed that they need to be together, she would’ve never backed off in the span on 24 hours. I proceeded to tell her that I felt disrespected by the way she spoke to me, and threw her logic right back at her, saying that I could l not in good conscience take just the one if all that she said yesterday was true.
Note: I have a speech impediment. It’s very noticeable. And she noticed, and interpreted I guess as me being autistic. She texted me that she could tell I’m on the spectrum (which I’m not at all), and told me “I’m not your enemy. I’m not trying to belittle you. You’re in flight or fight mode.”
Other red flags about this breeder. She has numerous litters. She has puppies that are 15 weeks, 4 weeks, and 3 weeks. She has blue merle chihuahuas. She told me that dogs on medications only live 8-9 years, that heartworm prevention meds kill their livers and kidneys and to not let my vet push any more vaccines on then then the ones they’ve received. She also heavily pushed back when I told her I plan to crate train.
Looking back, I feel bad about myself that I even contacted her to begin with. It was absolutely against my better judgment and a decision made purely on the emotion of missing my old dog. Not going to lie though, I do feel really hurt by the whole thing and it’s made me nervous about ever getting another dog.
Note to add: I check my shelter on a regular basis. Unfortunately 95% of the dogs in the shelter near me are pit bulls or shepherds. Nothing against those breeds, but I’m scared of all big dogs after an attack when I was young and love chihuahuas. I’ve always heard chis and chi mixes are popular at shelters, but I’ve never seen one in mine, and that’s the breed I want

2024.05.19 06:17 katiereadsalot Shaking after starting Reconcile (Prozac)?

Shaking after starting Reconcile (Prozac)?
Hello everyone! I have a 2 year old chihuahua mix, around 8 lbs, who has recently started Reconcile aka Prozac. He started with 1/4 tablet (2mg) for 6 days, then 1/2 tablet (4mg) and is currently on day 4 of that dosage. His full dosage will be 1 tablet (8mg).
Since starting the 1/2 tablet (4mg), he has started shaking any time other than when he’s relaxing. Shaking when we talk to him, when he’s given a command, when he hears a sound, when he gets excited, when he gets a treat, really anything other than complete relaxation or sleeping has him shaking. While I know many chihuahuas shake, he has never been a shaky chihuahua unless he was sick.
Is this a normal side effect? Will it go away over time? Is this something worth contacting his vet about?
If it’s relevant at all, he also always has a bad reaction to his vaccines- lethargy, fever, tenderness, lack of appetite, drinks little water.
