2024.05.11 14:59 Gemzile Job expectations and compensation. Am I getting screwed? [UPDATE]

Original post 2021:
‐‐--------------------- Here are the details:
Is this typical? ‐‐---------------------
Update 3 years in:
Despite the many comments stating I was getting screwed, I am still at the same job approaching 3 years in. Here is how it evolved. A typical schedule is as below.
Monday: 8am-5pm office hours [20-35 patients] Tuesday: OR 7am-5pm [8 total joints / flip rooms] Wednesday: Rounds then office 8am-4pm Thursday: Surgical center 7am-3pm [5 total joints] Friday: 8am-3pm office hours [15-20 patients]
As expected, OR days can sometimes go later than 5pm. We occasionally toss on a revision after the surgical center at the hospital making for a late night.
Office call 7 days per month [M-Su] with ER consults / surgery if our practice is requested [about 3 consults per call week and 1-2 OR cases] We cover for 1 of the senior orthopods and he pays $1000 when we cover his call [we would take call 7 days every other month without this]
With a more solid patient load, I dropped clinic coverage [I'm beyond happy about that]
We dropped operating on Fridays, so weekend rounding is now a minimum.
Pay scale over the years: 2021 - 100k base w/ 10k EOY bonus 2022 - 115k base w/ 10k EOY bonus 2023 - 115k base +6k call w/ 15k EOY bonus 2024 - 130k base +6k call w/ TBD EOY bonus
Other info: New Jersey Ortho total joints, no sports med 401k - no match Profit share - 100% vested after 5 years Safe harbor Vision, Dental, Healthcare
Was it worth it?

2024.05.11 14:53 Bro_PLS_Name Here's why Pupa Is the best anime ever made

Here's why Pupa Is the best anime ever made
Here are a couple of reasons why i think pupa is the best anime ever created 1. It's extremely family-friendly: It can be shown to kids and adults of all ages, especially if the kids are young ipad babies after all there parents couldn't know but legally i do not advise you to show it to children thats what my lawyer said i should tell if you do plase make sure to apologize to the parents learing a nice ukulele song and taking all accountability by making sure they understand why this is family friendly like SpongeBob or Berserk 2 The extremely long run time of 4 minutes: Yes It helps a lot to tell the story of pupa, and it's not confusing at all. You always know what happens, and the characters are extremely fleshed out like the..the..sister eating brother scene.. 3. It takes RISKS okay, guys? What do you think that every anime can have a cannibalism incest scene? F no (i advise you not to say slurs after all. Please keep it monetized for future ads) It's so unique, fun, and strange that you can't take off your eyes on the screen, no mather how much you want no mather..how much you want 4 ALL OTHER ANIME SUCKS!!! I have only watched 637 anime, according to my MAL account, and i can assure you that there's no other good anime. One Piece, Cowboy Bepop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Fullmetal Alchamist Brotherhood, Frieren Beyond Journey's End, Steins Gate, Gintama, Kingdom and Hunter X Hunter are all bad series if you ask me why? It's very simple. You see, all of them i haven't watched, but i will say i did for the purpose of this post, and i dont like them because i said so and you might think now this is just a stupid, annoying and a childish reason and you know what? Ur right :3 5 Only the best people of society like it: Yes, that's right, only true gentlemen with exusitive teaste in media can understand the complexity of pupa. You need to be extremely invested and analyze every frame in slow motion to get it. Otherwise, you won't understand the pure genius of the series, and to the argument only degenerates like it, i will say wrong, my kindest sir fadora tip i know 3 other pupa fans like myself and all of them are normal and charming one of them is Andy Dick the popular comedian, Dahvie Vanity the popular singer of the scene/skramz/crunkcore/wtfisthisshittyassmusic genre band blood on the dance floor and ofc our favorite nose Voldemort from harry potter 6 Maria is a mommy: She is the most gothic hot thick chick u can ever see in ur god damn life. There's no argument in that, and she is so normal and not mentally ill. In fact, she needs to be the next president of Saudi Arabia she will treat the people there, very nice 7 The sister Yume: Yes, that's right, she is probably the best character in the entire world, and she never does anything wrong in the series and she dose not deserve to be killed and obliterated into the sun with rocket while she is outisde of space chained up on drugs and bearly alive no guys dont hate her for being a foresaken monster of god and abomantion of someones fetishesh u dumb dumbs, you should spread only love and positive 🤎🤎🤎 8 Because i said so: I really challenge you to find ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE SERIES PLEASE DO!! After all, the series is great. What can you not like about it? It doesn't have gore and disturbing scenes, and it's interesting seeing a good brother and family doing their family activities like cilling and enitre facilities and drinking innocent watermelons juice that the brother provides so lovingly for his sister without hesitation its just what every family of non ill forever jail sentence non canibalistic pieces of shit should be :D My final score of this shit show its 21 Buffed Black Man no im not gay..probably/10 i hope you enjoyed my non ironic and 100% real opinion as a the biggest Pupan Stan Fan i will be meeting a very nice group of people ho also like pupa and we will have a nice meeting eating chips drinking juice in tall hlackish browinsh ropes in the forest worshipping our god and savior BiggieCheese have a wonderful day you wonderful people i love you all so much

2024.05.11 14:48 tempmailgenerator Handling User Data Change Notifications in Node.js Applications

Getting Started with User Change Notifications in Node.js

When developing web applications, especially those that require real-time user interaction and data processing, managing notifications for user data changes is a crucial aspect. In the context of Node.js, a popular runtime environment for executing JavaScript on the server side, this process involves utilizing various modules and techniques to ensure seamless communication. One common challenge developers face is configuring the application to send emails whenever there are changes in user data, such as profile updates or activity alerts. This task requires a deep understanding of both Node.js's asynchronous nature and the integration of external mailing services.
This challenge not only tests a developer's ability to handle server-side programming but also their understanding of SMTP protocols and third-party services like SendGrid or Nodemailer. The process involves setting up secure connections, managing authentication, and crafting email templates that are both informative and engaging. With the right approach, Node.js can be leveraged to create a robust system that notifies users of changes effectively, enhancing the overall user experience. This introduction will explore the foundational steps required to tackle this issue, preparing developers to implement a reliable notification system in their Node.js applications.
Command/Module Description
Nodemailer A module for Node.js to send emails easily.
dotenv A module to load environment variables from a .env file into process.env.
express Fast, unopinionated, minimalist web framework for Node.js.

Deep Dive into Email Notifications for User Data Changes

Implementing email notifications for user data changes in Node.js applications is a critical feature for maintaining user engagement and security. When a user's information is updated, whether through profile edits, password changes, or other significant account modifications, prompt notification ensures that the user is immediately aware of these changes. This is not only crucial for transparency but also for security reasons. If the change was not made by the user, immediate notification allows them to take quick action, potentially preventing unauthorized access to their account. Moreover, this feature enhances the user experience by keeping them informed about their account status and any relevant updates. Implementing such a system requires a solid understanding of Node.js, email sending services, and the SMTP protocol, which is responsible for sending emails over the Internet.
To achieve this, developers often turn to Nodemailer, a powerful module for Node.js that simplifies email sending. Integrating Nodemailer into a Node.js application involves setting up a transporter, configuring authentication with SMTP server details, and crafting the email content. The process also involves handling responses from the email server to ensure the email was sent successfully or logging errors for troubleshooting. Security best practices, such as using OAuth2 for authentication and encrypting sensitive information using environment variables, are paramount. This ensures that user data and access credentials remain secure, preventing exposure to potential vulnerabilities. By leveraging Node.js and Nodemailer, developers can create efficient, secure, and user-friendly email notification systems that enhance the overall functionality and security of web applications.

Setting Up Email Notifications on User Data Change

Node.js with Nodemailer
require('dotenv').config() const nodemailer = require('nodemailer') const express = require('express') const app = express() app.use(express.json()) const transporter = nodemailer.createTransport({ service: 'gmail', auth: { user: process.env.EMAIL_USER, pass: process.env.EMAIL_PASS }}) app.post('/useupdate', (req, res) => { const { email, changes } = req.body const mailOptions = { from: process.env.EMAIL_USER, to: email, subject: 'Your account was updated', text: `Your account has been updated with the following changes: ${changes}` } transporter.sendMail(mailOptions, function(error, info){ if (error) { console.log(error) res.send('Error sending email') } else { console.log('Email sent: ' + info.response) res.send('Email sent successfully') } })}) app.listen(3000, () => console.log('Server running on port 3000'))

Enhancing User Engagement Through Email Notifications

Integrating email notifications in response to user data changes is a sophisticated feature that significantly elevates the user experience in modern web applications. This functionality is not just about informing users of changes; it serves as a vital security measure, ensuring users are immediately aware if their account details are altered, potentially highlighting unauthorized access. The implementation of such features requires a thorough understanding of backend technologies, primarily Node.js for server-side logic, and the utilization of email transmission services like Nodemailer. Through these technologies, developers can construct a seamless bridge between application state changes and user notifications.
Moreover, the importance of secure and efficient communication channels cannot be overstated. Implementing email notifications necessitates a keen awareness of security practices, particularly in the handling of user data and authentication credentials. Utilizing environment variables for sensitive information, employing secure connections for email transmission, and ensuring data integrity throughout the process are paramount. These considerations not only safeguard the application and its users but also ensure compliance with data protection regulations. The end goal is to create a user-centric notification system that not only informs but also enhances the overall security and integrity of the application.

2024.05.11 14:46 ProfBumblefingers d100 Donkey Details

d100 Donkey Details
Gus the donkey.
Adventurers often obtain donkeys to carry extra gear or loot. Strong and sturdy, these beasts of burden are also remarkably efficient, able to forage almost anywhere, and needing only straw or hay and a little grass now and then when on the farm or in town. These un-sung heroes need a little love. Here's a d100 list of Donkey Details (I suppose you could use most of these for mules, too):
  1. Laughing Donkey. This donkey's hee-haw sounds remarkably similar to human laughter. Only makes this particular sound when PC's do something stupid or risky.
  2. Scared of open fire -- torches, campfire, etc; runs away. Can tolerate lanterns (but kinda iffy).
  3. Practical Joker Donkey. Takes one step to the side when anyone tries to load anything onto it and the loader is not looking.
  4. Union Donkey. If ever loaded over 3/4 normal carrying capacity, goes on strike, will only walk in circles until it gets a long rest.
  5. Back-Peddling Donkey. When spooked, always tries to back up 60 feet, no matter what's back there.
  6. Depressed. Need to talk to it and pet it for 10 minutes after each long rest (and on cloudy days) to get it moving.
  7. Battle Donkey. This one loves battle and always charges straight toward any battle noises it hears. No holding it back. Ooh-rah!
  8. Happy to carry riders (bareback, without a saddle), but doesn't want anything tied / cinched around it (will try to scrape items off against a tree, wall, the ground, etc.).
  9. Allergies. Donkey has allergies in spring and fall. Sneezing fit 2-in-6 chance each hour. Drops stuff.
  10. Lie-Detector Donkey. This donkey can sense when a humanoid is lying. Likely via some sort of pheromone cue (?). Farts if a lie is told within 10 feet of it.
  11. Marathon Donkey. This donkey has incredible endurance and can travel twice as far between long rests.
  12. Will carry sacks, corpses, or other floppy things, but not wooden boxes or other things with sharp edges.
  13. Scared of crowds. Simply WILL NOT enter a village / town / city.
  14. Has tapeworms, must feed twice the normal rations until diagnosed and healed. Poop can give tapeworms to any humanoid. Heads up.
  15. Streetwise Donkey. Grew up in a city, pulling a delivery cart. Knows all the streets of the city, how to get anywhere. You tell it where you want to go, it will slowly, at a plodding pace, lead you there. It can't talk or understand any commands other than place names in that one city.
  16. Vagabond Donkey. This donkey will occasionally wander away from the group and stay gone a few days, but then it always returns. Where does it go? Why? No one knows.
  17. Mother-bucker. Will attempt to buck any female humanoid who attempts to ride.
  18. Nauseated, 2-in-6 chance of throwing up in a big way every 10 minutes for a day
  19. Scared of its own shadow. On sunny days, freaks out every now and then.
  20. Large Donkey. This donkey is a freak of nature and is twice the normal size. It can carry four times the normal load and requires four times the normal feed/rations. It won't fit in most stable stalls, through most doorways, etc. Commoner strangers are usually freaked out by it; they are often intimidated by it (2-in-6 chance), or try to kill it (1-in-6 chance) because they think it is a bad omen, enchanted, cursed, undead, etc.
  21. Stealthy Donkey. This donkey walks in a way that is completely silent, even on cobblestones, and shifts its weight as needed to eliminate the sounds of any clanking gear it carries. Instinctively hides itself behind/inside/undearound any available cover, at all. You turn around, there it suddenly is, looking at you in the eye. Can freak a dude out.
  22. Loves butterflies. Chases every one it sees.
  23. Counting Donkey. Point at a group of objects and say "Count." Donkey will tap its front right hoof a number of times equal to the number of objects in the group. Counts about one item per second. Can't spell worth a damn, though.
  24. Aqua-donkey. This donkey loves playing in streams/rivers/ponds/rivers. Runs to them. Likes to splash everyone else. Thinks it's funny.
  25. Catches a parasite disease and will die in 3 days unless healed
  26. Chip-On-Shoulder Donkey. If there are other donkeys / horses around, hates them, always picking a fight.
  27. Blessed Donkey. This donkey enters the scene carrying a religious messiah, or so they say.
  28. Talking Donkey. Amazing! But, a bit finicky, only talks 1-in-4 times you ask it to, and at other random times as DM deems appropriate. Also, only knows a few words/phrases: yep, nope, hungry, tired, idiot, run away.
  29. Hates the heat. Half movement and half carrying capacity on hot days > 80F. Needs double water rations. *OR* Hates the cold. Half movement and half carrying capacity on hot days < 50F. Needs double saddle blankets.
  30. Ate some weird mushrooms along the way. Temporarily blind for 1d4 days
  31. Hates elves, they're too self-absorbed and snooty, always making you walk through trackless forests, getting you stuck in the underbrush.
  32. Prudent Donkey. Has 1-in-6 chance of perceiving a trap within 30 feet. Will look at the trigger mechanism, hee-haw loudly, and not take a step toward it. No matter what.
  33. Mystical Donkey. Has some kind of weird ancestral donkey mind-meld with a caster in the group, constantly complaining (mentally) that "this s**t is too heavy, dude," "can't you give a donkey a break?," "how about carrying some of this s**t yourself, tough guy," etc. You can't concentrate.
  34. Lucky Donkey. When within 10 feet of this donkey, you can re-roll one roll per day.
  35. Somehow, loves smelly green ogres who sing. Tries to run off with any such ogres encountered.
  36. Hates humans, they make you work too hard, usually in larger towns or cities where the cobblestones hurt your feet.
  37. Needs a bath, smells very bad. Indescribable, really. No surprising any foe while this donkey is around until it gets a bath.
  38. Shy Donkey. Always tries to move behind you when you encounter anyone new.
  39. Keen smell. Can smell most enemies within 100 feet and will hee-haw loudly to warn you. False alarm 1-in-4.
  40. Sprint Donkey. This donkey can run at twice the normal movement rate, but only for one minute between long rests.
  41. Drunk Donkey. Will only work when slightly inebriated. Must feed it a wee flask of ale, wine or whisky to get any work out of it.
  42. Has one very short leg. Walks unevenly. Kinda funny, but only 1/2 normal movement rate.
  43. Beautiful Donkey. This donkey is a very fine specimen of a donkey. Highly desired by donkey ranchers to breed other donkeys. Sells for double the normal price. Bit of a prima donna. Must be fed one apple or pear per day, or refuses to work. Resents you.
  44. Lucky Donkey. When within 10 feet of this donkey, you can re-roll one roll per day.
  45. Sneaky. When you're not looking, has 1-in-2 chance each day of pick-pocketing something off the back of a random PC. Might drop it, might eat it, might fling it to the side of the road, might just hold it in it's mouth. Hard to say with donkeys.
  46. Scared of snakes. Snake within 30' causes total donkey freak out.
  47. Always tries to eat/gnaw whatever it is carrying (especially food) whenever you're not looking, ruins stuff.
  48. Freaked out by undead. If it sees undead, or smells them (can smell 60' away), RUNS in the opposite direction.
  49. Narcoleptic Donkey. Falls asleep, often.
  50. Critic Donkey. When others aren't looking, looks at you and rolls its eyes. You swear.
  51. Foraging Donkey. Grew up in the wild. If there is any vegetation around, at all, it can find it, find enough edible material for a meal, and feed itself, no rations required.
  52. Shoe-Throwing Donkey. One-in-four chance of losing a horse shoe each day, won't walk until found or replaced.
  53. Small Donkey. Can only carry half normal carrying capacity. But has a scrappy attitude and is NOT SCARED OF ANYTHING (immune to fear and intimidation).
  54. Repressed anger. Tries to bite (for real) anyone within 5' who is not its owner (considers only one person its owner).
  55. Back-Row Donkey. If there are multiple four-legged animals in the group, this one must be the last, in the back, or it won't go/work at all.
  56. Vertigo Donkey. Always dizzy, walks in circles unless carefully guided constantly by hand.
  57. Hates carts, wagons, etc. Will not pull a cart or other wheeled vehicle.
  58. Wallowing Donkey. Enjoys a good roll in a mudhole/puddle. Every mudhole/puddle.
  59. Deaf. You bought/raised a deaf donkey. Should have checked. Anyway, can't hear any commands. Won't respond to visual commands. Must touch the donkey to give it a command.
  60. Musical Donkey. Gets indigestion often, becomes VERY flatulent.
  61. Flying Donkey. This donkey has been magically enchanted to fly, only once in its life, for one minute. The wranglemaster must speak the command word: "Esel-burro"
  62. Addle-Headed Donkey. Once per day, has a 1-in-4 chance of running in a random direction for 1 minute.
  63. Hates the rain. Won't work in the rain. *OR* Hates the wind. Won't work in the wind.
  64. Say-My-Name Donkey. You must call it by name to get it to do anything. It answers with a loud bray each time.
  65. Hates dwarves, always making you work underground in the mines, and their beards are (somehow) scary.
  66. Often gets a leg cramp, limping for 10 minutes, 1/4 movement rate.
  67. Smoking habit. Will work only if you let it smoke lit cigarette or pipe while on duty.
  68. Smart and independent. Anticipates and does exactly what you want 5-in-6 of the time, but disagrees and argues 1-in-6 of the time.
  69. Lover Donkey. Wants to make baby donkeys, runs after opposite gender donkey (or horse) every time it gets the chance.
  70. Has a drinking problem. Will always rush toward any water source to take a drink.
  71. Is a hot head, always immediately charges and attacks any foe encountered. No holding him back.
  72. Pregnant Donkey. This donkey is about to have a baby. 2-in-6 chance each day until baby is born.
  73. Loves flowers. To eat. Will only do any work if given one bouquet to eat per day.
  74. Pious. Has 1-in-6 chance each hour of stopping for 10 minutes, kneeling on front two legs, and praying to the donkey god "No Cargo Bob"
  75. Is reckless, doesn't look where it's going, always running into things, chance of falling off cliffs, etc.
  76. Dead pan smile. At the most dangerous / awkward moments, turns to a party member and gives the most ridiculous, hilarious donkey smile you have every seen. PC must make DC 10 Const saving throw or bust out laughing for 30 seconds.
  77. Nervous Tick Donkey. This donkey kicks its left leg backwards randomly, every now and then. If anything/anyone is standing behind this donkey, there is a 1-in-6 chance that it kicks.
  78. Happy to carry items/supplies tied or cinched around it, but won't carry humanoid riders (bucks them off).
  79. Homesick, always tries to run away and go back home (or to the place where you bought / found / raised him) every chance he gets
  80. Perceptive Donkey. Has 1-in-6 chance of perceiving a secret door within 30 feet. Will walk up to it and put its nose on it.
  81. Scared of water, won't cross a creek/rivepond/lake, etc. Definitely not getting on a boat.
  82. Front-Row Donkey. If there are multiple four-legged animals in the group, this one must be the leader, in front, or it won't go/work at all.
  83. Pacifist Donkey. Refuses to carry any weapons or ammo.
  84. Glowing Donkey. This donkey glows faintly in the dark. Very dim light. No one knows why.
  85. War Veteran Donkey. Missing one leg at the knee (maybe has peg leg). Opposite ear slashed off. Wears an eyepatch. Lots of scars. Can only carry half normal weight, but its kick does +2 damage.
  86. Vagabond Donkey. This donkey will occasionally wander away from the group and stay gone a few days, but then it always returns. Where does it go? Why? No one knows.
  87. Alert Donkey. This donkey has a 1-in-6 chance, on its own, independent of PC checks, of noticing an impending ambush. It will hee-haw loudly if an ambush is about to occur.
  88. Ate some bad food / weeds, now has diarrhea, big diarrhea, 1-in-4 chance every hour for a day.
  89. Expressive Donkey. Often has ideas and wants to share, "hee-haws" very loudly for 30 seconds. Sometimes indicates something important, sometimes not.
  91. Hates halflings, their barn doors are too low and their generally cheery attitude is annoying.
  92. Super-donkey. Can carry three times normal carrying capacity, but for only one-third the normal time between long rests.
  93. Easily distracted by various things along the road ("Squirrel!"), constantly stopping to sniff / check out something.
  94. Really thirsty today, requires twice the normal water ration for one day. Pees a lot. (I mean a lot.)
  95. Wrong-way Donkey. Will only walk backwards. Half movement rate.
  96. Ugly Donkey. This donkey is bow-legged, has a saggy back, missing teeth, ugly hair, warts, boils, is missing large patches of hair due to mange, somehow is always dirty, has flies, ticks, lice, etc. Nose usually runny. Eyes too. BUT, this donkey can Misty Step.
  97. Shell-shocked Donkey. Scared of battle noises. Runs away from battle noises. Like, a quarter-mile away.
  98. Hates strangers. When within 15 feet of an unknown/new humanoid, hee-haws loudly for 5 minutes. So embarrassing.
  99. Picky eater, only eats store-bought straw/hay/whatever. Won't forage along the road/trail.
  100. Loyal Donkey. Will not leave its humanoid wranglemaster unprotected. Will defend wranglemaster to the end. Will take an arrow or battle ax blow to defend wranglemaster. There to the end, no matter what.

2024.05.11 14:43 UsernameDsntChkOut [Landlord US-NC] Need Some Guidance

DISCLAIMER: This is long, but it’s worth the read, and 100% true and ongoing.
I really appreciate medical staff, particularly nurses - their hard work, diligence, empathy, and willingness to fill gaps where they exist.
As someone in education, I often feel as though there’s a sense of community between us in being over worked and underpaid.
This leads me to my dilemma.
I bought a condo during COVID. My roommate had moved out to move in with his girlfriend, my family friend became a realtor, and talking about the possibility of being a homeowner led to searching and searching led to buying - relatively quickly. Six months later, my partner and I decided to move in together to her place.
After letting the condo sit vacant for a few months, I tried Airbnb. This was a no-go with the HOA, so I read the terms, and discovered renting to others was allowed, but had to be 30+ day rental only. With a contract.
So I did that. I researched avenues and listed on Furnished Finder. I’ve been booked, with zero vacancies, since then (Fall 2022). And have had ZERO issues - mainly because I like to work exclusively with travelling nurses. I know they’re clean and thoughtful, rarely even there, and I also feel safe knowing that a professional is staying there.
This has been moderately lucrative. I only charge what is costs me to keep the condo plus ~$200 (mortgage is $1100, HOA is $375 - there’s a pool and I’m in a beautiful and safe part of Charlotte within walking distance of uptown - wifi is $60, electric is about $60 - it is 1b1ba, free parking, washer and dryer in unit, and all TV subscriptions you can think of) so renter pays $1850 monthly. Rent is due on the 1st but is only “late” (incurring an $80 fee) after the 5th.
I have been putting the extra ~$200 into a HYSA for my son who is also in nursing school (he earned his CNA while still in high school!) and again, as someone in education, I acknowledge how lucky I am to not only save, but to have any property at all.
I ensure that I am the type of person who practices what they preach as often as possible - I have waived late fees, not charged when something is ruined, etc. I once installed a handicap railing in the bathroom for a woman who suffered a concussion while on shift because she was worried about falling in the shower. I intend to always be kind in hopes that maybe cynicism could pause, even just for a second.
My most recent tenant, let’s call her Amy, is from a neighboring state, early 50s, travelling RN, and a grandparent. Of course, I accepted her request for stay, and she moved in on time.
Month 1: She is late on rent for the first month - oddly, this has never been an issue for me before. I tell her not to worry about the $80 late fee and let me know when she can pay. She does, a few days later, and pays me in full (says her paycheck got screwed up with her agency + the hospital). Okay, no big deal, shit happens.
Month 2: She asks for a Mexican restaurant recommendation, I ask her how everything is, and she lets me know that everything is fine but that she feels embarrassed this month because she can only do $1000 now, and needs another week for the $850 (says there are currently "bumps in the road"). This is the second time, and I waived the fee again, but now I’m starting to wonder if this is going to be a pattern.
Month 3: Amy is supposed to move out 5/12 and pay pro-rated rent this month. She texts me and asks if she can move out 5/7, and if I'll prorate the rent - I say of course, happy nurses week, and she talks about how much she loves the place, thanks for being understanding, and I let her know there won’t be a late fee (I felt weird about this, but didn’t want to tack on more when I was honestly unsure I would get any of it at all).
5/5 - I text her a rent reminder, snd she asks for an extension until Thursday for the prorated rent of $418 and says "I know there's an $80 fee and I'm sorry" and I said "let's forget about the fee - how about you throw the sheets and towels in the washer and clean up - nothing too serious - and I'll waive it" she responds "that sounds great, thanks for being so kind" <-- those exact words
5/7 - I let her know to drive safe, no response
5/9 - I send her a reminder that this is when she and I agreed she'd pay the $418, no response
5/10 - I text her again, I call her (probably 10 times) because at this point she's never not responded and she SEEMS like a sweet grandma, close to retirement, who is exhausted and might be having some financial issues. So I go on her Facebook and see if she's literally alive - I message the person she's in a pic with saying who I am, confirming I know Amy (this is my partner’s Facebook because I don't have one), snd that I'm worried about Amy because it's unlike her to not respond and I hope she's okay. I also let her know that I might call wellness check because I’ve never not heard back, and she’s older. This lady lets me know that she’ll message Amy and let me know what she says. Within (literally) a minute, she lets me know she got in touch with her and she’s at home (so, no longer in Charlotte).
So I spend yesterday trying to get in touch with her. I never do. And at this point, I don't know if she's left, but I do know she's okay and I’m starting to realize she left, is now avoiding me, and I likely won’t receive the $418 that she owes. Okay.
So, last night around 10:00PM (again, in education, so I work two jobs), I go to the condo with my partner just to check on things - she's gone - but it is WRECKED y'all.
Chinese food in the bed (how does that happen?) the kitchen caked in grease (every surface - every single one - including the sink), hair (LOTS of hair) all over the tub and in the bathroom, dishes with food on the counter, a weird stain on the couch, anyway, you can imagine.
So I go in the bathroom so start cleaning that first. While I have a crew that deep cleans, I’m a veryyyy clean person and there’s no way I was leaving that night with the condo in the shape it was.
I go to open up the cabinets where spare towels are because at this point I’m going to wash everything, even if it was never used.
I find ... the biggest pad I've ever seen in my life (my partner said they're the kind you get when you give birth and come home) STUCK TO THE CABINET WITH BLOOD ON IT.
A pad. The side of my forearm. Used. Stuck to the top of the cabinet.
HUH?
So I messaged Amy again (still haven’t heard anything) and told her she should be ashamed of herself. I was nothing but understanding and compassionate to her, and she not only stiffed me, but left my place a wreck. I didn’t mention the pad in this moment, but it’s definitely what set me off.
Then, a miracle. She responds.
She lets me know that if I contact her or her friends again (remember the woman I asked if she had heard from Amy because I was worried about her?), that she will sue me for harassment and she doesn’t owe any “alleged debt” <— she uses this phrase
I remind her of the contract and that I have all of our correspondences and text messages. I also let her know that I installed cameras on the exterior of the condo.
She responds “And?”
That’s all from both of us.
So now - this morning - I’m unsure what to do. I know I will not have any money saved this month from her stay, but I also don’t want her to be able to take advantage of anyone like she has me.
I’m going to contact Furnished Finder, but I think other than putting up a red flag on their end, there’s not much I can do.
Any guidance that you all have?
Am I just really lucky it’s taken this long to have a terrible tenant (yes, I screened her credit and background using Furnished Finder)?
Do I just suck it up and deal with the $418 loss?

2024.05.11 14:35 Motor-Ad-6437 Flawed Ritual and by-passing the corruption of the Graal

Hello fellow fans!
I had a random thought about the birth of Angra Mainyu if you just followed to the ritual as intended to recover the third magic and then unmanifest him out from there. I started to check the wiki and reddit to see more information about the correlation between Angra Mainyu and the greater graal, but in the end it turned out giving me even more questions than answers, so i was hoping the biggest fans and most technicals people here could help me:
1.The first shock comes from the very premise here: https://typemoon.fandom.com/wiki/Fuyuki_Holy_Grail_War
However, the ritual's very premise is flawed: only a spiritual body like a Servant, not a flesh-and-blood Master, is capable of grasping the Grail and completing the ritual
Where does this even comes from ? Is it genuine ? Isn't it the 'tale' given by the three founders to recruit the other masters instead ? Because that's a HUGE FLAW INDEED, the whole ritual to retrieve the magic can't be done by the master, but all seven servants must die, basically the retrieval is impossible. I sincerely doubt Justeaze, Zouken and even Zelretch as witness would make such a huge mistake, like impossible right ??
I can't find a source from the wiki for that, but Illya says something like this in-game, but sounds like a mistake to me, we know the lesser Graal purpose is to connect the entry-point to the hole (when servants are sent back) with the master so he can reach the root, shouldn't matter if it's a physical or spiritual body, i think ?
  1. Considering the By-passing of Angra Mainyu on the other hand, i don't think it's such a big deal, as long as you don't kill the seven servants and you know precisely how to get what you want (CQFD all the Medea happy endings). The wish will consume the magical energy and the greater graal will not give birth to anything in this setup. But that leads to my original question, what about the other scenario ?
If you kill the seven servants to reach the root, will it uses the magical energy to open and stabilize the 'Hole to Akasha' or is it a completely different feature and the greater Graal will birth 'All The World Evils' no matter what ? (if there is even an answer to that anywhere).
  1. Theorical question, if i get the answer to point 2, and the greater graal gives birth to Angra-Mainyu no matter what. You could just make a fake wish, a canceling-wish of the Evil existence, before going into the Root, i mean we have hollow ataraxia who confirms the insistence of Angra-Mainyu wish-granting's will even outside of the Graal. Sounds like a good action, use the magical to free him from his horrible state and disappear, while preventing the birth of the Beast. But would that even be possible ? A wish to cancel the current wish-in-the-making ? Technically, you're the victor, would that prevail over the accidentel 'wish' entered into the Graal by accident ? I doubt it but i wonder if anyone knows, surely someone has already asked if we could resolve things with talk-no-jutsu.
  2. Final note, the special case of the Holy Graal war 5th edition, we have an extra Gilgamesh (himself worth more than 1 servant), which means if this scenario, even if the ritual was indeed flawed, and you absolutely needs your servant to complete the ritual: It would be technically possible to succeed. The seven servants would die (maybe don't even need seven in this scenario) and you can actually reach the Root with the support of your own servant to bring you there. If that's correct, then it's really sad they didn't make it into any ending right ? Even a bad ending, where the ritual is finally completed, but too many people died, so getting the third magic wasn't worth it for example, in any routes really, makes the extra presence of Gil in that edition like a wasted potential.
Thanks for thoses who read all that, and hopefully have the answers !!

2024.05.11 14:24 mitsuuu_hara Crazed ex best friend won't leave me alone.

Okay so. I don't know exactly how to start this but my main goal right now is how to make my ex friend leave me alone. Maybe some sort of silent revenge? I know that it might seem childish and immature but I am seriously done with being the bigger person. I'm tired of getting run over and used for being too kind and I'm finally stepping out in order to give this person what they deserve.
Long story short, I used to have a best friend for over 5 years. All was great - or at least I thought so. Through-out the years of us being friends I started to notice all her toxic behaviors, including her being overly possessive where she wouldn't allow me to have other friends - to being jealous whenever I got the spotlight over something and all these little resentments made her turn our friendship into a competition. She'd always boast about the small compliments she receives as if she won a trophy and always tried telling everyone how amazing her life is - so obviously over the constant repetitiveness of her attitude and stories - we got tired of it. Now this isn't the reason why I wanted to take revenge, see I tolerated every single time she was rude and mean for no reason - how many times I helped her through shit to even answering all her school works for her. I did it all because she was my best friend. But things really crossed the line when I found out that she was spreading rumors to one of our friend groups. Wanna know why? ding ding ding - because she was jealous and she wanted me to look bad so that she'd be "the favorite". Now, at this time I still tried to be the bigger person and I talked to her for 3 hours straight - trying to understand all the things I did wrong so I could apologize to her and just when I thought we made up - this bitch fucking does it again.
So being sick of her behavior, I stopped being friends with her. Obviously this made her very upset and I believe it's hurt her pride, so until this day she's still trying to get people in our school to hate me. Last Thursday she even got my dad involved by telling him I wasn't in school - AND I WAS, I WAS RECORDING IN THE FUCKING HOT ASS SUN JUST TO GET A PROJECT DONE. What's worse is that my dad didn't even believe me, and trusted that pathological liar instead. I don't have a good relationship with my dad as is it and she knows this. But to be that petty got my blood boiling at this point. She even had the balls to taunt me and tweet "Opps, looks like someone got caught". (This isn't all the things she's done to me.)
Now I'm finally seeking a silent revenge? Name it how you want. Any way to serve justice.

2024.05.11 14:24 scsresearch SCS lower back pain with or without leg pain

I will declare SCS review publications with their built-in bias percentage,
i.e., the number of built-in biased publications divided by the total
publications reviewed. The industry is the SCS manufacturers. The built-in
bias is due to industry-funded studies, industry-contracted researchers,
researchers with stock in the industry, etc.
https://twitter.com/isSCS4me/status/1738237589180584165
The information below is for failed back surgery syndrome(FBSS) patients,
patients without previous back surgery history but with back pain and
of general value for those patients researching SCS.
https://bestpractice.bmj.com/info/us/toolkit/learn-ebm/what-is-grade/
"GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations)
is a transparent framework for developing and presenting summaries of evidence
and provides a systematic approach for making clinical practice recommendations.
[1-3] It is the most widely adopted tool for grading the quality of evidence and
for making recommendations with over 100 organizations worldwide officially
endorsing GRADE."
https://academic.oup.com/painmedicine/article/21/11/2699/5848733
It is a literature review of several frequencies, low-frequency, burst, and
high-frequency SCS for lower back pain(LBP) with or without leg pain.
"Conclusions
According to GRADE, there is low-quality evidence that high-frequency SCS
compared with low-frequency SCS is effective in patients with axial LBP with
concomitant leg pain. There is very low-quality evidence for low-frequency SCS
for the treatment of axial LBP in patients with concomitant leg pain. There is
insufficient evidence addressing the effectiveness of burst SCS to apply a
GRADE rating."
The following quoted paragraph describes the severe deficiencies of the current
SCS research, with very few exceptions, few not-industry-sponsored studies.
"This review highlights the need for future investigator-driven, non-
industry-sponsored studies with long-term assessment. All except
six studies meeting inclusion criteria [28, 30, 41, 43–45] were
supported by industry funding. Only two studies reviewed [30, 43]
were performed by authors without industry-related disclosures, one
of which was missing a critical amount of data and another which
investigated a modified paddle implant. In general, industry-
sponsored studies report higher rates of positive outcomes [53, 54],
positive outcomes without statistical justification [55], lower rates of
adverse effects [56], and are published faster and more frequently
than trials without industry funding [57–59]. Furthermore,
publication bias has been shown to disproportionately affect evidence
that comes from small RCTs and cohort studies [60, 61], such as the
evidence base reviewed herein. Within the GRADE framework, Guyat
et al. suggests downgrading the evidence based on risk of publication
bias when “most studies are industry sponsored or likely to be
industry sponsored (or if the investigators share another conflict of
interest)” [47]. The results of this review certainly fall well within
this description. This does not, however, negate the findings of these
trials, but simply indicates the need for more investigator-driven
studies, especially since cost-utility analyses are now being
published based largely upon results from industry-funded work
[34]. De Andres et al. have provided an excellent example of an
independently funded RCT comparing traditional low-frequency with
10-kHz SCS, which demonstrated similar improvements between the
two groups at six months with regard to global pain (axial pain not
reported separately), function, mental health, and sleep quality [62]."
The built-in bias is (15/17) 88%.
Research supporting SCS for LBP with or without leg pain is weak.
SCS MDs recommending SCS for LBP with or without leg pain are on a slippery
slope. The SCS manufacturer is not a patient ally; they exist to make
a profit. The industry-contracted researchers should convert their SCS
manufacturer contracts into full-time employment; they do not represent the
best interests of SCS patients.
I recommend reading the publication.

2024.05.11 14:24 Repulsive-Throat-313 Small story to destruction. Di ko na kaya harapin, gusto ko na tapusin

Very long post in english-tagalog. Has tldr in the end.
I am raised on a typical household and di kami ganun ka-well off sa family. I have 4 brothers, 1st and 2nd brothers have a store working in the garage of our home fixing and selling motorcycle parts and such, my 3rd brother is employed on an automobile company, and a little brother who is senior high gr 12. Our mother is a public servant on our barangay and our father usually stays at home cooking for our lunch but has been working himself(lumalabas na ng bahay and I honestly do not have an idea where). As for me, I have always been viewed as an excellent student by my parents (matataas nakukuha since elem to senior high and nakapasa at currently 4th student on a UP constituent). Nahihiya nga ako pagminsan na sinasabi nila na sa UP ako nag aaral, kasi di rin ganun kataas grades ko and delayed pa ako ng 1 year from graduating.
I have free tuition so binibigay lang ng parents ko for me is my allowance, rent and extra money for additional expenses kapag pumapasok ako (my rent is 2.5k). Umuuwi din ako sa province namin kung walang pasok at tama lang sa schedule. Also background for me, baon ko lang ng senior high is 100 pesos, so this college for my allowance lalo kapag galing ako sa province namin may 5k to 8k ako which is super laki na sa akin.
Now last week, i asked my mom that I will pay the rent the following week, she agreed and also said to send it with my allowance which is a great time since under 1k nalang cash ko nun. After few days, this last sunday I was busy browsing and came upon a betting site, natuwa ako sa mga nananalo kasi naglu-lurk ako.
Hanggang sinubukan ko mag register, nasa gc kasi ako ng sure win ang taya and specific time frame siya per day. Naglu-lurk lang ako sa gc kasi may 50php free kung nagregister ka, then when I have around 3k sa niregister kong account. Now tuesday na siya, which is may pasok ako. Kinausap ko yung 'mentor' paano mag withdraw pero tinanong ako kung paano ako nasa gc kasi for those 3kphp lang ang na top up ang pwede and sila lang din pwede mag withdraw. Habang kausap ko yung mentor, yung mom ko nag send sa aking gcash ng pera for my rent and allowance (5k). Ayun ginastos ko yung 3k. Then I played and play
Nung madami na akong balance, nag ask na ako for withdrawal, I was impulsive and not thinking properly since 40k yung withdraw ko. I processed it and need ng 8k muna mag send ako para matanggap. I only have ~300 pesos left sa cash ko, umutang ako sa friend ko and kasama sa dorm para dagdagan gcash ko at mabuo 8k and ayun. May problema daw, and kausapin ko daw CS, sabi nung customer support I need to top up P28,888pesos. Kausap ko CS hanggang 10pm and ayun lang tlga.
Next day, Wednesday, andami kong iniisip, pati siguro kasama ko sa room sa dorm naramdaman na tahimik ako I planned and think to loan my laptop or other things/get a loan since now I dont have the money, i dont even have that much cash to survive the expenses the following days and gcash ko ubos na rin.
I decided to go home, good thing my onhand money is enough to cover the fare until I got home. I got home and skipped my wednesday class at 6:00pm. I planned to resolve it this wednesday and planning to tell my parents about it while stopping myself to cry.
In the end I got home acting like nothing happened and didnt tell my parents about the things happened, how I owe my dormmate 3.7k, 2.5k rent not payed, i have no money casg and the gcash she just sent yesterday. I acted like nothing happened.
Thursday morning, I contacted the mentor and said I just need to cover the P20K and she will shoulder the 8,888p. I am dumb and it just got to me, I searched and searched online. Until I found shopee sloan and spaylater of my account. I can have 10k loan and found a way for my spaylater to cash out 10k on it. So I got the full 20k! I just messaged the mentor and so we got it and I deposited it, but it turns out that I need to make new deposit request and the 20k was lost and not recorded to their system as the mentor said.
I was shocked, my 20k vanished like that, I was so close in withdrawing my 40k. So i called the mentor and we talked. After talking I began to think again, how can I secure 20k?, then impulsively, I said to my 3rd brother howuch is his spaylater limit, his credit limit is 30k, so I said can I borrow the 20k, hes just shocked a little and a little skeptical. And with that I moved my hands fast and cashed it in my gcash.
I got my 20k again, the mentor and CS said that process is done. We are just waiting for it to go through, and then it happened, it eont go through, they asked to check my details and then my withdrawal details is wrong, the account number is not my account number. So it was a big problem. I asked how to resolve this and they said I needed 30k top up for them to run the process since their system is automated. And we talked over and over. After I was done talking with the cs and mentor, I was shocked, I cant face my brother. When he is in his bed and saw me, he said 'uy wag mo kalimutan yung 20k ha, malaki yun'. But I just said and reassure him like its not a big deal.
That night I began to feel fear and depressesion on my situation. 3.7k, 2.5k, my wednesday class I missed, the 3 thursday class that I missed (last f2f meet on one class, and the 2 class with class activities and submissions), 20k loan on spaylater and sloan. And finally the 20k spaylater from my brother. All thede thoughts just keeps repeating, I can't. I didnt sleep much. And just keeps searching for possible ways to end it. Tapusin ko na ata.
Friday. May pasok yung nautangan kong kuya kaya wala siya ng umaga hanggang gabi. ngunit hndi pa rin natuto. Naki usap ako sa mentor kung pwedeng new account nalang ako. Pumayag, nag gloan naman ako 5k ngaun for new account. di ko na inisip consequences, nag compute lang ako kungilang withdrawal at mababawi sana. Nag top up ulit sa new account until withdrawal process, biglang yung withdrawal number ko napalitan ng isang digit. 2 hours kong hinihintay yun tapos bigla nalang nagpalit. At doon ko naisip, wala na, mas nadagdagan pa.

2024.05.11 14:16 Open_Test6157 My bf 30m and I 28f switched to long distance after breaking up because he set me up with our sex toy bag.

So I 28f am with "scott" 30m and we would celebrate 5 years in a few months. But it doesn't seem we will make it there. When we met it was a literal double take and we were crazy for each other. We've lived together for as long as we have pretty much known each other because we had some life issues so it was easier to be living together. My family wanted to move States, and thought it would be good if we came along and got away from our problems, so we did. After the move we were fine for about roughly 2 years but our intimacy was crap( living with parents) caught him watching corn videos of every kind rather than fix or even confront the issue. Once I found that stuff out and brought up how uncomfortable I was to never be picked over the digital stuff, and how insecure some of his searches make me(use your wild imagination). He told me he stopped but then I found him looking at escorts as well around the same time. We talk that through, he didn't meet with anyone, not sure if he spoke, just looked at what was out there I guess.. so then we start working on making time for each other 3 to 5 days a week and I do follow through and so does he but then the bs starts. I didn't work much for most of my life(life issues) but I had to get a job, and I hated it. And he "sensed" a change in me and I told him, well ya because I'm not waiting around all day for him anymore so 100% of my attention isn't on him anymore and after 3 years of that it would be hard, but im also doing things I don't wanna do and I'm exhausted from putting up a front all day with people. But no it can't be that, apparently he thinks someone else stole my attention away or is trying to, he thinks it's someone at my work. Which everyone is happily taken as far as I know and I wouldn't crap where I eat. So after like 2 months of regaining intimacy and trying he starts getting super worried and acting all in his head and saying he's just worried about what I'll do on my days off when he works or what I'm gunna do at work. Constantly just sadly saying, I'm just worried. I drop him off at work one day and was exhausted from working the night before and I had to close at work that night again so a little after I get home I decide to take a nap, and I tell him I'm gunna try to take a nap. A few minutes later he asks if I'm gunna try, I keep my eyes closed because I feel like I could pass out then he calls me a few times and texts saying you aren't napping are you. You planned this, you waited til your parents were gone to "nap" idk what you were really doing or why but I know you weren't napping. At this point I was almost asleep when my phone kept buzzing so I looked finally and see that and I'm in shock. I tell him I was curled up on the couch about to fall asleep and asked why he called after I said I was gunna try to nap, he said to talk, but doubt it he just doesn't trust me because of my old ways of making money and surviving, which none of it happened with or even near this relationship. Now I have some lady issues and it's really hard to hit the goal in sex like most people can, so if anyone has like certain mental disorders you might understand, but I did some research a little while ago and it said if I did it myself I could maybe do it with someone else. I really thought about trying and pulled out the bag we have it all in cause, ya know how sometimes you need look at something and then you truly decide yes or no? so I grabbed it, stared and threw it back in the box not even a minute later. So thinking so low of myself like, of course I can't be like other women where it's easy and feels like the best thing ever I'll just be happy with what I do get and hope I'm enough. But sadly that's not it folks. I bring him lunch and then drive off for my closing shift. A few hours later he comes home then texts me a bunch saying can you call me, I knew you weren't at home napping, you did something else and all because I had just been so low feeling about myself and situation, one I've tried to communicate before but met with no real care at all. So he asked why is the bag moved and I lied instead of telling him I moved it for myself but changed my mind. I've never lied to him or anything to hurt him or make him not trust me this is my first offense but I came back home to an empty room, he left. He stayed away for weeks as well no matter what I said or did he was done. Told him the truth, of course, he doesn't believe me, he wouldn't understand how much of an insecurity this is for me. His reason for staying gone? He could apparently smell and sense a change, he felt a shift, and he has to trust it. But like what? What kind of explaintion or proof is that? For 3 weeks we were apart and then he told me the 3rd week he is flying back to our home state. At this point we were talking again so I asked if we could do long distance, he says no. Then we met up for a night to talk, and he brings it up and says it's a great idea. We will do therapy and fix ourselves and when he has the money for our own place we will move me back home. Well I don't think that was ever the plan. We could always see location and all emails were signed in on both phones. Tonight I found out after he's been there for a week that he has a new email I have no access to that he tried to hide, and then tonight we were supposed to have digital sexy time together but instead he ignored my messages for 40 minutes left his house at 9pm and then shut his phone off. Knowing it would tell me he left. He still hasn't turned the phone on. Idk where he is or why he did this but it's shady as heck. I also think he cheated before he left with escort or someone else he met while he was out of my house because I've had what I thought was a uti but doc says no uti, something else is causing it, now I think sti's and I haven't slept with anyone so it was passed to me from him from someone else. I'm pissed he endangered me like that. But what should I do? He's gone ghost. im thinking just factory reset my phone(my parents gave him everything while with me, phone, my car to share etc) from a distance through Google and cut the service off. I feel like I'm being and have been used for 5 whole years and now that i dont appease him he just went ghost. Ive sent like 30 texts to him and called and all goes to voicemail. So ya i got dumped because i moved a sex toy bag. And its not like hidden its in a dog staircase the steps have cubbies and the bag sits in there with a bunch of other stuff. He claims to have set it perfectly so it wouldnt just move, someone else had to move it, but i feel like it was a dumb set up because anything could happen my dog uses the stairs, i move the stairs for my dog, so ya i did move it and told him that, even my lies i told, told him i moved it. But for him to claim its all the evidence he needs to have left me after 5 whole years seems crazy, especially to say i cheated because the bag was moved. Should I just end it now? Or after 5 years should I keep on fighting? Fighting feels hopeless right now...so what would you do in my shoes?

2024.05.11 14:13 Zhanglixu35 Food allergies healed after practicing Buddhism as a vegetarian (食物过敏)

A review paper stated that food allergy is an important public health problem that affects children and adults, and it has been increasing in prevalence in the last 2 to 3 decades. The symptoms can vary from mild to severe, and in extreme cases food allergy can lead to anaphylaxis, which is a life-threatening allergic reaction. Currently, there is no cure for food allergy [1]. From Dharma point of view, itching and skin allergies, including food allergy, are generally the activation of karma, so they are karma diseases. Skin disease is definitely related to killing, either from this life or the past life, or both.
When I was young, I once ran a home-based farm for 2-3 years, raising sows and chickens. Master Lu had enlightened that killing karma of running a livestock is huge and you will die in pain.
In 2004, I was 37 years old. My skin started to become sensitive and I could not eat foods either with high content of vitamin C or soy products. Whenever I saw others eating all kinds of snacks and fruits, I was really envious. Sometimes, I could not help but eat a little fruit or tofu once in a while and my skin immediately became allergic. I also suffered from high blood pressure and unstable blood sugar, and I was uncomfortable all day long. Every day, I spent my time in chagrin and depression.
In the first half of 2016, I was introduced to Dharma practitioner Xu by my daughter-in-law. Practitioner Xu offered me some Dharma gems for free. I just flipped through them because I couldn't settle down to read. However, I had a strong feeling in my heart: I wanted to study the Dharma! It wasn't until the second half of 2016 that I decided to learn Buddhism, do daily recitations, and recite Little Houses.
On the 19th day of the 2nd lunar month in 2017 I went with my daughter-in-law to the Guan Yin Dharma Hall in Milan, Italy. The practitioners in Guan Yin Dharma Hall were all so diligent. I was so touched by what they shared about the health benefits of vegetarianism! With the encouragement of two practitioners, I made a big vow in front of Guan Yin Bodhisattva to be a vegetarian for life.
On the way home, I remembered that I had been a meat lover. I am the head of the family and responsible for cooking for my family. What would I do when it's time to taste dishes when cooking? I felt so worried. After I arrived home, I settled down and thought, since I made the vow in front of the Bodhisattva I would never break it! I was determined to be a vegetarian!
Time flies, and before I knew it, I had been a vegetarian for more than a month. During that time, I didn't even taste the dishes once when I was cooking, and I didn't even think about eating meat. I couldn't believe how easily I had given up meat and changed my habit of tasting dishes. At that moment, I really realized how important the power of vow is! It was the Great Compassionate and Great Mercy Guan Yin Bodhisattva blessing me and making it easy for me to be vegetarianism with Dharma joy!
By the summer of 2017, my body began to change. My digestion improved, my stomach didn't feel bad anymore from whatever I ate, and my strength returned.
By 2018, my blood pressure and blood sugar were both normal.
By 2019, the dark spots on my face began to recede and my face gradually showed a rosy glow.
Now, I can eat anything as long as it is a vegetarian diet, including fruits, and I am no longer allergic. How lucky I am! I am so lucky to encounter such a good Dharma gem! I can't tell you how grateful I am!
If I hadn't encountered the Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door, if I hadn't become a vegetarian, my body would not have changed like this. Living a vegetarian life is a convenient and cost-saving health and beauty product.
With such a good Dharma and such a good master, I will cherish it! Practice it well! Learn it well! I am grateful to the Great Compassionate and Great Mercy Guan Yin Bodhisattva for giving me all this!
My deepest gratitude to Namo Sakyamuni Buddha!
My deepest gratitude to the Greatly Compassionate and Greatly Merciful Guan Yin Bodhisattva!
My deepest gratitude to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas from ten directions and three periods of time!
My deepest gratitude to the Dharma protectors!
My deepest gratitude to the selfless and altruistic Master Jun Hong Lu!
If there is anything that is not rational or in line with the truth in the presentation, I’d like to seek forgiveness from the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva, all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, Dharma protectors, and Master Jun Hong Lu.
I’d also like to seek forgiveness from my fellow Buddhist practitioners.
I, not my fellow practitioners, will be responsible for my own karma!

KEY FACTS (CDC,Page last reviewed: August 23, 2022)
Food Allergies
Food allergies are a growing food safety and public health concern that affect an estimated 8% of children in the United States. That’s 1 in 13 children, or about 2 students per classroom. A food allergy occurs when the body has a specific and reproducible immune response to certain foods. The body’s immune response can be severe and life threatening, such as anaphylaxis. Although the immune system normally protects people from germs, in people with food allergies, the immune system mistakenly responds to food as if it were harmful.
There is no cure for food allergies. Strict avoidance of the food allergen is the only way to prevent a reaction. Early and quick recognition and treatment can prevent serious health problems or death.
The symptoms and severity of allergic reactions to food can be different between individuals and can also be different for one person over time. Anaphylaxis is a sudden and severe allergic reaction that may cause death. Not all allergic reactions will develop into anaphylaxis and more than 40% (2 in 5) of children with food allergies in the United States have been treated in the emergency department.

2024.05.11 14:09 Commandmanda Urgent Care Report: 5/8 - 5/9/2024

Some days the clinic is full. People stream in, dealing with the chronic issues of aging, basic stuff like urinary tract infections, and sinus/throat pain.
Occasionally we see a senior for shortness of breath. They often recall months and months of symptoms, without an initial understanding of what the origin was. By the time we see them, they are so far gone that the hospital is the only place where they can be treated.
Similarly, we see patients who walk in with puffy ankles - lymphatic drainage indicative of severe cardiac complications/severe infection/cancesurgery. Off to the hospital they go, with a silent prayer. PS: Folks, if your mom, dad, granny or grandpa suddenly has fluid buildup in the legs or arms (you can test this by applying steady pressure with the tips of your fingers (no nails, please) and then observing the tissue when you lift your fingers away. If there are dimples in the tissue that remain...Whelp...time to go to the ER to get a full workup. Do not wait, do not pass go, just run them to the hospital.
We saw only one positive COVID case during the past couple of days, who had tested and was seeking a note for work. Fortunately the patient had very mild symptoms. It's a reminder that COVID is still out there. The patient had no mask - so be aware - positives can be found at your local supermarket and pharmacy. Being safe by wearing a good mask when in public indoor spaces is always the best way to prevent COVID infection.
......
The bad news: Our moment of being relatively "COVID low" has passed. Numerous counties are seeing a slight uptick, including:
Alachua
Bay
Bradford
Broward
Calhoun
Charlotte
Clay
Maimi-Dade
Hardee
Lake
Manatee
Marion
Martin
Orange
Osceola
Pasco
Pinellas
Putnam
St. Johns
Seminole
Washington
Most have only a few new cases detected in hospitals, but some like Pinellas and Pasco have jumped by 100% unexpectedly.
The totals for Florida are still reduced because all the other counties have the same or less positives:
4/26 05/03/24
2,406 2,280 ...........................
Lastly, I'd like to inform you that I have finally, officially contracted COVID.
I knew it might be inevitable considering the activities that I was persuaded to do, including:
Travel via airplane masked with goggles
Travel via car service for more than 1 hour, windows closed (masked)
Travelling via crowded Subway (masked)
Dining indoors (no mask)
Dining outdoors but in a crowded area (no mask)
Observing plant life in an extremely enclosed humid environment - a hot house with numerous tourists (masked)
Strolling in a park full of tourists (masked)
Attending a museum and exhibits absolutely stuffed full of tourists for more than 3 hours (masked)
Shopping indoors for more than 15 minutes, (masked).
My symptoms are very similar to allergies (which is what I thought it was until the fatigue and fever set in): stuffy nose, body aches, then fatigue, fever of 99.9 degrees, and now a sporadic cough. I am a little concerned that my heart rate is significantly elevated (100 when my normal is around 60-80), but this is common as the body fights viruses. My O2 is great, around 98-99.
I'm managing it well with pain relievers and nasal spray. Certainly hoping to kick it soon.
My relatives (whom I was visiting) are all very upset, considering that I had avoided a symptomatic COVID infection for more than 4 years. They knew how important it was to me, and are kicking themselves for asking me to "go out on a limb and be free for a while". I hope none of them contract it again, and that my coworkers didn't get it from me. We'll see.
The only plus from this is that I have probably contracted variant J1 or KP2, and will have some small amount of additional immunity for this year's summer spike.
Take my example as something not to do, and:
Stay Safe!

2024.05.11 14:00 MArcherCD Star Wars 'The Bad Batch' Season 3 Arcs

[Hopefully a week and a half is enough to let everyone catch up, so I can talk about all the episodes here without spoiling them for anyone]
The third and final edit of this show, and I’m sad to see it end. Like the others, I’ve grouped the season’s episodes by what feel like the most appropriate story arcs, and made two versions of each to accommodate the individual season’s alternate logo – as I like to differentiate, like my work with ‘The Mandalorian’.

There are a few surprises in this season though, I’ve found opportunities to link the three seasons together through flashbacks from archive footage that I’ve created to tether the show together as a whole. Like other flashbacks/flashforwards I’ve put in other projects, I’ve made the anachronism as visually distinct as possible from the rest of the story there, with having zero colour saturation and a vignette filter.
. .
.
For clarification: the arcs numbers here are based on, and following on from, the edits of the first 2 seasons I’ve done– 7 from Season 1, and 9 from Season 2 with the arcs themselves and the standalone episodes I added the alternate logo to. Those episodes came with the “[V2]” label of course, as will be the case here too for the same reasons.

The colour of the alternate logo this time around is more off-white – but more like a very light gold colour, since just the off-white was a little too close to the original grey to be actually visually distinct, especially from across the room.
.
.
.
Arc 17: “A Fresh Start”. Episodes 1 “Confined”, 2 “Paths Unknown” and 3 “Shadows of Tantiss” all grouped together. They were all released together and worked perfectly well together (probably by design), so having them as the first arc was very easy and made a lot of sense.
.
The name has a few valid references in the 3 episodes: Omega adjusting to Tantiss, what Project Necromancer could mean if it’s ever successful, Hunter and Wrecker’s search, the Clone Cadets they rescued from the jungle planet Setron – and Crosshair and Omega’s escape & what it could spell for them going forward.
.
Finally, in the second episode, when H+W are walking through the jungle with the cadets they’ve found, there’s a small flashback all the way back to the end of Season 1, which I think works well and ties things together in a good way.
.
.
.
Arc 18: “Cross-Purposes” – episodes 4 “A Different Approach” and 5 “The Return”.
.
I slightly changed the chain of events in episode 4 to, I think, improve the story somewhat. A fair bit of episode 4 feels like it’s bulked out by people going out of their way to be self-centred assholes and – I don’t know if it’s just lingering frustration from Season 2 with all the Cid missions that always yielded no results – but can the good guys just win UNconditionally for once??
.
Now, after Omega wins the money gambling, Imperial Captain Mann doesn’t fleece them, undoing their progress – he just gets the transmission about the shuttle crash and leaves to investigate immediately. Secondly, when the duo discover Batcher’s been kidnapped, the street urchin now tries to bribe the information out of them, but Crosshair intimidates him and he immediately relents, telling them where the Imperials went. I think ideally, I would cut the kidnapping out if I could because the captain’s just being an annoying sore loser and it bloats and segues the plot when the duo already have a shuttle they can bribe themselves onto. But that doesn’t match the vessel they eventually steal and escape with, and the background doesn’t match the commercial shuttle depot, so I can’t “invent” a firefight there instead and kind of must keep the kidnapping and such for consistency reasons.
.
Later, on Barton IV, there are 3 very brief flashbacks to the episode “The Outpost”. This is very much deliberate because this is a site of a major event in Crosshair’s arc in the last season, it makes sense that when he returns there, it would be stuck heavily in his head every second he’s there – hopefully this conveys that effectively.
.
.
It does feel like the first 4 episodes work well as one giant story instead, but that comes to 1 hour 40+, even with the last episode slightly shortened somewhat. This feels very long – especially with the show already having 1 “mega-arc” already with the first 3 episodes of Season 1. So having this duo instead feels like it works better as a more Crosshair-themed story – as with the name: “Cross-purposes”.
.
To be specific, “Cross-purposes” is an expression where 2 or more people are at odds and have different goals/methods concerning the same thing. This feels very apt for CROSShair and Omega having to work together after their shuttle crash, and Crosshair with the squad on Barton IV learning to work together again and getting to the bottom of things between Crosshair and The Empire. In the latter episode, there are some flashbacks to the previous season – they’re very short, but hopefully with the way I’ve crafted them, they each have a big impact in making the shot/scene deeper.
.
.
.
Arc 19 is split into two versions: a four-episode story from episodes 6-9, and two self-contained two-parters, because I find the four episodes actually work very well in both formats. As usual, you download and view whichever you agree with the most and works well with the rest of your collection. Also, just having the former could apply here if you like the latter half, but disagree with the choice to muddy the waters with how the ‘Dark Disciple’ novel left things on the Ventress front, so excising the latter half works better for you.
.
The four episode arc: “All That Counts” is all of E6 “Infiltration”, E7 “Extraction”, E8 “Bad Territory” and E9 “The Harbinger” as one long sequence. There’s a brief flashback to Season 2 when ‘M-Count Targets’ are being discussed with Phee from Pabu, and that’s where the connection across all 4 episodes comes from, as it’s a consistent thread through them all.
.
The name “All That Counts” is a play on the M-Count aspect of course, but it also as other meanings it can apply to in the four episodes. The Clone Assassin has to silence his own brother for silence’s sake and recover Omega for Hemlock – that’s all that counts, no matter the setback or the injuries. Wolffe has a clear change of heart when he meets Rex again, hears his story, and the reality of his orders sinks in: hunting a child – being loyal to his brothers, doing the right thing, and letting the target go as a show of both is all that counts, no matter the consequences. When Hunter and Wrecker meet Fennec Shand again after Pantora, the past doesn’t matter, only the present and them needing each other’s help does: the mutual benefit, especially for Omega’s sake, is all that counts. Lastly, when Ventress appears on Pabu, there’s a lot of distrust for obvious reasons, but the squad need answers and help and she’s the only one who can give it to them – all that counts is that they trust her and let her do what she needs to do.
.
.
The first two-parter: 19a – “Teths of Patience” is just E6 “Infiltration” and E7 “Extraction” back to back, no flashbacks. The name is another play on words, because in these two episodes we see a few characters going through TESTS of patience of one kind or another at the old ruined B’Omarr Monk Monastery. Mostly the members of Rex’s Clone Underground trusting Crosshair in their presence, and the Clone Assassin trying to complete his objective despite some setbacks and injuries.
.
The second two-parter: 19b – “New Allies and New Information” is just E8 “Bad Territory” in Space-Florida, and E9 “The Harbinger” with Ventress back to back, containing a short flashback in the former. The name ties into the first two-part story featuring Fennec back in season 1 “More Enemies and More Opportunities” as a kind of deliberate mirror. The allies (even just situationally) and information are both pretty self-evident with Fennec & Ventress, and everything they need to learn about this ‘M-Count’ phenomenon that’s presented itself.
.
.
.
For the remaining episodes of the season: numbers 10-15 essentially create one long unbroken chain of events where each episode leads very comfortably right into the next. But this obviously creates one giant story that has a very dragging runtime of at least 2h40m, which is a huge story for a series which was made for TV and not film, and was designed to fit into ~22 minute chunks from the start.

To this end, I broke things up into smaller stories – à la The ‘Liberation of Lothal’ in my “Rebels” edit – to make the home stretch of the season, and show, much more easily digestible.
.
.
.
Arc 20 begins with E10 “Identity Crisis” and goes right into E11 “Point of No Return”, and continues with E12 “Juggernaut”, before finishing with E13 “Into the Breach”.
.
Conveniently, I’ve found the episode title ‘Into The Breach’ actually works very well for the entire arc for one reason or another. First, we see the moral ground Emerie finds herself on with the subjects that arrive at Tantiss, and the fact that they’re just children. Secondly, there’s the TK’s mobilising and disembarking on Pabu and the subsequent fighting and recapture of Omega after that small battle. Third, there’s a stealth-op with The Squad and Phee going to a secure Imperial world to recover a former Imperial asset, with very few options left on either side at that point. Finally, there’s going to Coruscant at the heart of The Empire to get Wayland’s co-ordinates.
.
As stated above, episode 10 onwards is just 1 giant chain that runs unbroken, so having a self-contained Tantiss trilogy right at the end to keep everything very grounded and straightforward was good, and these 4 episodes before fill the gap well by proxy, so it all works out well.
.
.
.
Arc 21: “Ground Zero”. The last of the show, consisting of E14 “Flash Strike” and the double-length E15 “The Cavalry Has Arrived”. It’s named as such because it’s the last trilogy’s worth of episodes self-contained to Tantiss itself and the last mission, which I think is a very fitting name.
.
There’s only 1 version of this arc, since the all-grey logo from the finale, to reflect the paint-blasted armour they adorn themselves with from E13 onwards, looked great and felt greatly relevant to include. Including this for the final arc felt like a no-brainer.
.
This arc does include the epilogue attached to the end this time. This is because it doesn’t contradict anything that chronologically comes afterwards in animation terms, as far as I know at least. The Rebellion pretty much began as soon as Saw Gerrera disagreed with The Empire on the very day of its founding, which we saw in the very first episode of TBB, which obviously precedes Rebels and Andor by a way, so there’s plenty of wiggle room for where the epilogue can fit in the timeline with everything else.
.
.
.
.
Footnote: I’m merely a self-taught or VFX artist here, so some areas are visibly *mostly* good as I have to be realistic with the footage in front of me and what I can do with it. If you do have any particular notes and feedback, feel free to give me your thoughts, but please be constructive and don't be an ass about it.

2024.05.11 13:59 ryyanoh Reflections from a Finished 1 Year Transferring to a US University

I just finished my 1st year at UofT as an international student from US (Cali) and am considering several US university's to transfer for my 2nd year. Everyone's experience will be different so take everything I say with a grain of salt. I tried to make this as applicable to UofT as possible and not general University advice.
  1. Definitely try to live on residence 1st year. Not only will you be closer to your classes and exams which will encourage you to attend lectures and tutorials, but a lot of your social life will revolve around your dormmates/floor and people you meet at your residence. It's also cheaper compared to nearby apartments or condo's and try to avoid Campus One and Chestnut due to lack of proximity to campus and cost.
  2. Do not buy the most expensive meal plan, buy the cheapest one (unless you eat a lot). 90% of my friends on meal plans did not use up all their swipes by the end of their year and had hundreds of dollars worth of swipes left over. The food from New College and Morrison is pretty good and food quality definitely varies across colleges.
  3. The social scene is not great especially compared to US schools as a lot of students commute and Greek Life isn't that popular here (less frats and sororities esp compared to undergrad pop). However, it's not as bad as people make it out to be and a lot of people who complain are not making much of an effort to put themselves out there.
  4. A lot of the students here aren't really trying to socialize and are more focused on their academics which is understandable due to the grade deflation. It's important to find your group of people which can be difficult but at the same time the undergrad population is huge.
  5. A good amount of people should not be here. For a lot of them it's not even their fault, they have to commute 2 hours everyday, work 2 jobs outside of school, have family issues ongoing, or just cannot mentally handle the workload and difficulty of the Uni. However, the rest just don't really care and when you stop caring, your grades can drop in an instant. It just takes on midterm so try to keep a mindset where you overshoot expectations for midterms so you have room to mess up on the final.
  6. Everyone has different experiences with Prof's but personally, the ones I had were some of the best instructors I have ever had. The Prof's at the this uni are some of the best around the world, but some Prof's are clearly at their position due to the research ability and not their teaching. McIvor for Soc is a good first year elective for those unsure of what to take and if you can memorize well.
  7. The Uni is competitive but not in the kind of vibe that students are competing against each other. There are curves for most courses but people are still willing to cooperate and work together. There is a feeling of a shared struggle rather than a "I can't help anyone else bc they could beat me out" mentality. The people you know in your classes can definitely affect your grade positively in a major way.
  8. Especially in Soc Sci and Humanities courses, grading is very arbitrary and often times you won't get feedback for your essays or assignments. Regrade opportunities are present but I refuse to believe that a difference in TA would not affect your grade in a major way the first time around. If you are aiming for an A, sticking to the rubic won't be enough, try to go above and beyond.
  9. The school does not see you as a person but rather a data point. I don't blame the Prof's or admin for this but the structure of the school. People talk about weed-out courses but the weed-out system applies to the university as a whole. It is not in the Uni's best interest that you do well but that their average grades hit a certain mark (usually around a B-) to keep the school's prestige.
  10. Around 1/3 of the school is international from either China, India, South Korea, or Japan. They usually form their own groups and don't interact much with other students outside of their international community even if they don't have a strong language barrier. Off topic but I've noticed that a lot of the relationships I saw on campus were Chinese int. couples if not the majority at times (maybe bc of the social pressure back home to find a partner idk)
  11. Take easy electives. Don't be that one guy who takes CSC110, MAT137, and then 3 more difficult STEM electives. This doesn't apply too much if you're in Rotman but your electives should be Soc Sci unless you're really cracked as STEM topics. STEM students tend to try harder so even if a STEM course and a Soc Sci course has a similar average, the Soc Sci course will be easier assuming that you don't lean a particular direction.
  12. The grade deflation is tough. For 1st years the average GPA is a 2.7 and the highest avg out of all my courses was a B- (2.7). However, if you give your 100% I don't see a reason why you should not get a 3.0+ unless you have a special circumstance (work, illness, age, etc.) One of the major reasons I'm transferring away.
  13. The city is really nice, there's alot to do downtown and you should definitely take advantage of being in the center of DT Toronto. The food here is better then almost anywhere I've been since there are a lot of Mom and Pop places and less chains especially compared to the US. The Pink Chinese Truck is one of my favorites especially their Chicken Sandwich and if you live on Woodsworth, Majestic Shawarma is a nice place for a quick lunch (hi bossman if ur reading this).
  14. Most people sleep after 3AM and wake up after 12PM on the weekends. I would say to sleep early but that only works if you work well in the mornings which doesn't apply to most people. NEVER take morning classes. It doesn't matter if it's a program req there's always going to be a class that isn't before 11AM. Take the 8PM class if you have to. A late class is better than not going to class.
  15. Your happiest moments will be the smallest ones. This never applied to me until I came here. I don't know what to make of it but it is what is it.
Good luck to all incoming first years and I hope the structure of the University improves over the years. I'll definitely miss my time here :)

"Deadcoast Book 1: Heat and the Grizzly Reds" transports readers to a 2063 Earth, a world on the brink, where the scarcity of fresh water has led to previously unseen geopolitical tensions. Amidst this backdrop, the nation-backed militant group DAGGR has emerged as a formidable force, leveraging advanced technology to assert control over Canada’s abundant water resources. At the heart of their arsenal is 'slugTech,' a technology pioneered by James Broadshaw, intended for ecological restoration but repurposed for militaristic dominance.
The story unfolds with the chilling invasion of Vancouver, marking a turning point as DAGGR makes its ambitions clear, culminating in the assassination of the Canadian Prime Minister. This act of aggression leaves the country reeling, exposing vulnerabilities and igniting a global reaction.
The UNE-EYE satellite is central to the international response, a significant narrative element representing the world's most advanced orbital tracking system. Once decommissioned in favour of privacy, the Dutch reactivated the satellite as a strategic move to monitor DAGGR's movements and coordinate a unified international effort against the aggressors. This revival of UNE-EYE symbolizes a crucial turning point, highlighting the global stakes and the interconnectedness of nations in the face of a common enemy.
As Canada grapples with its plight, the DAMU (Deserted American Military Units) rise in solidarity, breaching borders to fight alongside their Canadian counterparts. This act of defiance is mirrored by international forces, including the Netherlands and Ukraine, each bringing their unique strengths to the coalition, underscored by the strategic oversight provided by the UNE-EYE satellite.
Amidst the geopolitical chaos, a man who had all but given up, a boxer on the ropes, emerges from Vancouver's Gastown. Known as HEAT, this leader of the Grizzly Reds becomes a symbol of resistance and hope. HEAT's story, and that of the Grizzly Reds, is one of resilience, rallying not only Canadians but also global citizens to stand against DAGGR's tyranny.
" Deadcoast Book 1: Heat and the Grizzly Reds" is a compelling narrative of survival, alliance, and resistance. It deftly weaves together elements of advanced technology, international politics, and the indomitable human spirit. The inclusion of the UNE-EYE satellite serves as a testament to the complexities of modern warfare and the critical role of global surveillance and coordination in maintaining security and freedom. But something else stirs amongst it. The UNE still shrouds its use, albeit assuring it is for record-keeping purposes- there is no way to be sure. Join HEAT and the Grizzly Reds as they navigate the challenges of Time, War, Science and liberating their fellow man in Vancouver. THE GRIZZLIES NEED YOU, in this action-packed, emotional saga, speaks to the resilience and camaraderie inherent in the human condition.
CHAPTER 1 - The Blood Spattered Maples
ILLUSTRATED VERSION -> HERE <-
The early morning sun cast a serene glow over Vancouver, its golden rays gently coaxing the city from its slumber. The harbour lay still, bathed in a tranquil blend of crimson and amber, defiantly calm as if aware of the day's latent potential for tumult. The awakening streets, pulsating with the vibrant beat of daily enterprise, transformed into bustling arteries of life.
Amidst this urban renaissance, Ryan stood by his apartment window, one eye still tinged a fading shade of deep lavender from last night's ordeals. He absorbed the duality of the world outside – a peaceful façade masking an undercurrent of chaos, much like his own existence. The apartment, a silent guardian of his life's chapters, was awash with tangible memories; some stood proudly like trophies, and others lingered like indelible scars.
"Eugh, need to sort out this money mess," Ryan muttered, his voice a gravelly mix of resolve and weariness. He gingerly touched the bruise beneath his eye, a stark reminder of the previous night's fight. He wasn't just a boxer but a living, breathing paradox. His undefeated record of 12-0 was more than a tally of victories; it was a map of a life spent dancing in and out of shadows. At 17, he was a beacon of hope for Canadian Olympic Futures. Now, at 33, he was a spotlight in his subconscious, illuminating the relentless passage of time and a road riddled with 'what ifs.' Eleven of those wins were echoes from a past steeped in the sweat and blood of the ring before life's currents swept him into the city's gritty underbelly. There, he became an enforcer, not out of choice but a necessity, bound by ties, not of blood but of unbreakable bonds forged in adversity. Stepping back into the ring at 33, Ryan wasn't chasing glory; he was hunting redemption, a chance to rewrite a narrative that had veered off course.
Today's boxing was far from what he once knew; it had transformed into a digital spectacle, a charade he refused to partake in. The sport now paraded fighters adorned with loud chains and face tattoos, pretending to live a life of crime they don't. Vile symbols of fame he doesn't wish for. Ryan had always skirted the fringes of the spotlight, respecting the sport but despising what it had become - a glorified masquerade that he believed led the youth astray. He stared out at the awakening city, contemplating his place in this ever-changing world, just as the first notes of a familiar yet unwelcome voice crackled from the vintage radio on his shelf.
"Ah, jimmy2piece," he scoffed, the name leaving a bitter taste. The vintage radio crackled on, announcing the dazzling exploits of the heavyweight boxing champion, an embodiment of everything Ryan detested about the sport's current state. Ryan's hand lingered over the old radio, a relic amidst the bountiful thrift and trinket that abundantly filled his apartment. The announcer's voice, overly flamboyant in its praise of 'jimmy2piece,' clashed with the morning's tranquillity, grating against Ryan's every nerve. With a flick brimming with contempt, he silenced the intrusive chatter. The ensuing silence was a stark reminder of his path's divergence from the once-noble art of boxing to a life mired in moral ambiguity.
"Enough of this nonsense," he muttered, the disdain in his voice mirroring the snarl on his lips as he spun the dial back to silence.
*Click*
Ryan was a man of contemplation; opening his balcony door, he let the morning breeze mingle with the memories that haunted him daily. These reflections were a tormenting ritual, no matter the joys and love surrounding him. His only respite was constant movement – hobbies, work, art – anything to fend off the sharp claws of the past that threatened to shred the remnants of his self-respect. He had lost ten years to choices and actions that replayed in his mind relentlessly every single day.
"This 'jimmy2shoes' or whatever...pal throws pillows, a poser pretending he's about that gang life; I can see it in his eyes, he's not a killer," he grumbled, gazing out at the awakening city. This day promised a respite from his underground fights – at least for a while. His recent backstreet brawls, a far cry from the glory of the boxing ring, were what paid the bills now. "At least I've bought myself three more months..."
Leaning on the railing of his miniature balcony, Ryan cradled a cup of steaming coffee, his gaze drifting over the streets below. At this moment, the chaos of his life seemed distant, replaced by a transient calm. Despite his bruised, rough presentation, a certain peace enveloped him, a rare stillness that belied the storm of his existence. His thoughts meandered through the serene hum of the city and the gentle brush of the ocean breeze. The skyscape, with clouds dancing to the ocean's rhythm, offered a brief escape from his turbulent past.
Memories of Robin, his mentor and friend, floated into his consciousness. Robin's untimely death in Dubai was a wound that never healed. The sacrifices he had made to keep Robin safe, only to be absent on the fateful trip that claimed his friend's life, weighed heavily on him. "Why did it have to be you, Robin?" he whispered to the horizon, the question, a haunting torment upon his daily routines.
Ryan was a thinker; as he slid over his ashtray from the stool, he sparked up A morning 'dart' (cigarette), as he called them. His past began to creep into his head, as it did every morning. With each inhalation of addiction-soothing nicotine, his blazing thoughts followed as his brain began to become fully active from his sleep. It was a raven on his shoulder tormenting him, pecking at him ever haunting his consciousness. No matter the love he may have found or the happiness, friends, or family surrounding him. The time to reflect was always grim and consistently unbearable. If he stood still, the Ravel's claws sunk more profoundly; the only reprieve was constant distractions. It's why he kept so busy, creative, and active. Ryan constantly kept moving with hobbies, work, or art. Pushing off the switchblade thoughts ready to cut into his subconscious and bleed out whatever self-respect he had left that day. He threw away ten years of his life, and he relives them every. Single. Day.
"Damn man, what's the point of it all?" Ryan's voice was barely a whisper, lost in the morning breeze. His gaze lingered on the horizon, eyes clouded with confusion and pain. "Robin's gone, and here I am, a ship adrift; up shits creek without a paddle. What good can I do? What purpose do I serve? My skillset? My knowledge? Ive wasted my life, nothing is applicable." The questions hung in the air, unanswered. Ryan's life had indeed been a storm of violence and turmoil, from the gritty days working alongside Robin, watching his back to his hard-fought victories in the boxing ring. He had dreamt of leaving the world of fights behind, yet fate seemed to have woven a different path for him, one that he couldn't escape...
The distant sound of boat horns broke his train of thought. These weren't the usual rhythmic calls that echoed along Vancouver's shores; they carried a sense of urgency, growing louder and more frantic by the second. Ryan leaned forward, squinting into the morning light. The sight that greeted him was anything but ordinary. Dark, ominous and foreboding shapes were cutting through the waters toward the Seawall – military-grade ships that seemed like phantoms against the sun's bright backdrop.
"What the...?" Ryan murmured, a wry smile touching his lips as he recalled a line from a 1930s radio show. "Ah yes, the 'Anti-Frackers' upping their game, bravo!" He often found solace in humour, a shield against the world's harsh realities. Ryan was an unbreakable anvil to the world, always struck to sharpen others' steel. But what about his iron resolve? He bore the burdens so others didn't have to, a silent guardian shouldering the world's weight in stoic silence. Yet beneath that armour of stoicism beat the heart of a man grappling with his vulnerabilities, a man with a core as soft as it was intense.
Just like that- The world as we knew it, changed forever.
The morning's peace shattered abruptly as sirens wailed into life, slicing through the air with a sense of impending doom. The tranquil dawn was now a backdrop to a nightmare unfolding in real time. Ryan's eyes, mirroring the turbulent hues of a stormy sea, narrowed in primal alertness. These were not friendly vessels coming to grace the city's harbour; they were harbingers of chaos, their arrival a silent scream in the gardens of Vancouver's tranquility. As the city around him carried on, blissfully unaware of the looming threat, Ryan's mind shifted into high gear, honed by years of confrontation, conflict and reading other peoples intentions. He understood the unspoken language of death, the subtle shift in the air that preluded catastrophe. The serene calm that had greeted the day now seemed like the deceptive stillness before a devastating storm.
PFFFFT~~
Ryan's coffee ejected out his mouth, a clean mist dispersed, dancing in the ocean winds.
His eyes widened in shock. "That... No, that's not right. That honeycomb structure on the bow – that's rumoured military tech, not something you'd find on a civilian vessel. That's definitely not one of our decommissioned ships; Canada has always had a modest military budget- It's not the U.S. either; they've moved on to those massive city carriers," he muttered, recalling the recent unveiling of the U.S.'s latest naval behemoth designed to be a self-sustaining war ecosystem.
"These are destroyers...carriers...and what in the world are those landing crafts?" His voice trailed off as a wave of realization washed over him. A heavy breath escaped his lips, his heartbeat thundering in unison with a growing sense of dread. This kind of military might, sleek and menacing, was straight out of the pages of a dystopian novel. Ryan's pulse quickened, adrenaline coursing through his veins, mingling with an unsettling fear. Vancouver, with its serene beauty and peaceful reputation, was the last place one would expect a military invasion. Yet, as he stood there, the city around him persevered in blissful ignorance. Laughter and the sounds of daily life echoed up to his balcony, starkly juxtaposed against the darkening horizon of his thoughts.
Something sinister was unfolding, and he felt an urgent need to act. "Ah, damn it!" he exclaimed, frustration boiling over as he hurled his mug to the ground, where it shattered into razer sharp ceramic shards—a glimpse of futures past.
The walls of Ryan's apartment, once a gallery of memories from a life half-lived, now felt like they were closing in on him. The space that had been his refuge, adorned with mementos of a tumultuous past, suddenly felt like a prison. He felt trapped, not by physical barriers, but by the weight of the unfolding crisis. Who could he call? Who would believe him about an impending military assault? Was there even time?
Each option seemed as hopeless as the next, leaving him feeling powerless. His fists, which had once brought him victory in the ring, now seemed futile in the face of this immense and unknown threat.
BOOM
A thunderous crash tore through the city's fabric, piercing the veil of laughter and routine. Giggles changed to Shrieks, the buzzing of cars in the city turned screeching of panicked tires. It was a boom resonating with such force that it seemed to shake the very resolve of the most robust steel, a sound that demands attention and captivates a person, a sound of death; it rattles you to the bone. This explosion marked a pivotal moment that would forever alter the course of Vancouver's history and, indeed, the world's.
The resounding echo of the first explosion heralded a declaration of war on all that was ordinary. In Ryan, the shockwave ignited a transformation. Despair morphed into an unyielding determination, a fire kindled deep within. His skin prickled, each hair standing on end as if his nerves were braille, spelling out the moment's urgency.
"Are they firing at us?" Ryan's voice was a mix of disbelief and rising panic. The thought seemed almost too surreal to entertain. He hesitated momentarily, grappling with the reality of the situation. The explosion's roar, so fierce it shook the foundations of his apartment, jolted him back to the present. Racing back to his balcony, what he saw confirmed his darkest fears.
The ships in the harbour were no longer silent, ominous spectators; they had unleashed their fury, sending plumes of smoke and debris skyward. Vancouver's skyline, once a proud testament to peace and progress, now served as a harrowing backdrop to an unfolding apocalypse. Below, the streets descended into chaos. People scattered in a frantic attempt to escape, their screams piercing the air, a chorus of dawning terror.
Ryan's heart pounded against his chest, each beat a call to action. He was no hero, never the 'good guy' in his story, but he did value life above all. Standing there, witnessing his city being torn apart, he knew he couldn't remain a passive observer. Indecision and shock gave way to resolve.
"MOTHA FU-" he cursed, his words lost in the burst of an explosion, spotted at the last second.
The world around him had erupted into a maelstrom of fire and fury.
An air burst shell detonated with ferocious intensity a mere 50 meters from Ryan's sanctuary. The explosion ripped through the building, an unforgiving hatred that jolted reality itself. The blast wave, a monstrous force of destruction, assaulted his apartment, shattering the windows with an ease that mocked Vancouver's fragility. Glass shards, transformed into lethal projectiles, hurtled through the air with a hunter's precision, each piece seeking its target. Instinctively, Ryan lunged for cover, his only protection a vintage oak promotional board, a relic of a bygone era. This wooden guardian, decorated with the iconic image of Stan Lee, stood as a stoic defender, a symbol of comic heroism now repurposed to shield flesh and blood from the brutal onslaught.
A low hum erupts from the depths of his being as the fireball swirled around him. "Breathe... I can't... don't fall asleep... don't...sleep..." he whispered, fighting the encroaching darkness. His cobalt eyes, glazing over open, fighting to the last light, flickered between consciousness and oblivion. The distant, muffled voices of mentors past echoed in his mind, a fading chorus in the theatre of his memories. Ryan looked to his left, cast one last lingering look at the Vancouver sky, a canvas of blue that seemed so distant now. As his vision began to narrow, a tunnel drawing him away from the light, Ryan felt the grip of darkness pulling him under heavy, yet weightless. Once so vivid and alive, the world around him was fading into shadows.
Amid shrapnel-induced unconsciousness, Ryan's mind catapulted him back to a pivotal moment from his youth – the Ontario Canadian Olympic Trials.
The stadium's noise swirled around him, but it was an entirely different world within the ring. There, it was just Ryan and his opponent, every move a testament to the sacrifices he and Robin(Ryan's longtime mentor both inside, and outside the ring) had made together.
Ryan's style in the ring was unique, a blend of calculated ferocity in speed and agility. He adopted the elusive, angular movements that Robin had honed while serving alongside the hardened Ukrainians on the frontlines of Kyiv. This style was compelling and unpredictable, frustrating his opponents with swift and efficient strikes. Ryan's ability to slip away from counters, almost serpentine in its execution, left them grasping at straws.
Point fighting for the Olympics was a system that worked well with Ryan's style but not necessarily with his mindset. Ryan was a fighter at heart, and sometimes, when pushed, the disciplined techniques would give way to a rawer form of combat. Robin, who always believed in Ryan's potential, saw this as his greatest fault and biggest asset to "push past." In his gruff but encouraging voice, Robin would often spew "The stink in that mind, You've got a head on you that'd make an onion cry," highlighting Ryan's occasionally impulsive nature, and inability to control his emotions when it mattered. This characteristic made Ryan fearless in the ring but also sloppy, open, and vulnerable. It often led him into trouble outside of the solace in prizefighting.
In these trials, Ryan's physical attributes – his slender frame, broad shoulders, wide back and a peculiarly long wingspan that gave him an imposing presence in his weight class – it made him stand out. His frame synchronized with his style, creating a truly unique spectacle of genetic gifts, hard work, and skill.
These memories blended nostalgia and pain as they flickered through Ryan's mind. They were reminders of a path once trodden, a journey shaped by the influence of a mentor and the determination of a fighter's spirit.
As the Olympic Trials set to begin, Robin looked to Ryan to instill confidence for his upcoming bouts, but Ryan was in his element. It was fight day, the fun day, the day to show off all of the hard work. Ryan had confidence, and his style in the ring displayed it in full. He moved with an angular rhythm that was both art and battle – slipping, landing a quick stiff counter cross, then gracefully stepping out of reach inches from returning fire. He made it look fun and easy, as if playing with his prey before fangs clench throat, delivering the killing bite. Looking closer, you can only see fire and determination in his bright eyes. He found purpose in the beautiful science of boxing. His strategy was that of a technical boxer, The Counterpuncher; 1. To bait his opponent into committing, then counter, fight long, fight smart. 2. Beat em' up, Frustrate em', then start slinging the heat in the uppercuts and lead hooks.
The bell rang and the fight was officially underway. Ryan controlled the ring with his long frame. Each exchange was rapid yet controlled, a dance of precise strikes and evasive maneuvers. The world's complexities faded in these moments, leaving only Ryan and the pure essence of the sport he loved. He felt invincible, a force of nature within the confines of the ring. To Ryan, the fight was more than a competition; it was a performance, an exhilarating escape from the mundane. It was true Purpose.
The intensity of the round reached a frustrating outburst by his opponent, who grabbed Ryan by the back of his head– 'SPLIT' called by the referee, his hand placed between them. A judge calls for a correction, catching the referee's attention only for a split second. In this second, Ryan's Opponent saw an opportunity. Lifting his head to move away, Ryan locks eyes with his Opponent, sporting a grin and delivering a sly headbutt as a parting gift. It's against the rules, but part of the game's harsh reality if gone unnoticed. Expelling energy and detesting it was a waste of fuel. It was a jolting reminder of "at all times"(protect yourself), a stark contrast to the discipline and respect Ryan upheld, starting his boxing journey in Thailand under "Muay Thai" rules, ideology of the worrior spirit and discipline. There was a sense of Honor in Lumpinee Stadium.
The outcome of these unsavoury tactics here is an advantage for the opponent. Ryan's inner pools erupt, his mind swirled with raging white waters, crashing and colliding against each other, two oceans with opposite currents meeting in his consciousness. His once technical thoughts, muscle memory mixed with fight iq burst with flames, erupting and incinerating all strategy in his path. His eyes widened, open like he'd found his primal genetic ancestry hidden deep within. The slaughter and the war of history. The bloodshed of 1000 lifetimes. He felt it all. Manic in thought. Ryan wanted to take his glove off and rip his cheeks open from the inside out--
BREAK - Ryan snaps back into it, erupting in stoic, silent, primal rage.
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░ ░ ░░░ ░░░ ░░ ░ ▒ ▒▒▒▒ ▒ ▒▒▒▒ ▒ ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ▓ ▓▓ ▓▓▓▓ ▓ ▓▓▓ ▓ ▓▓▓ █ ███ ██ █ ████ █ ███████ █ ████ █ ████ ██ ██ █ █████████████████████████████████████
The fight escalated, Ryan's disciplined technique unravelled under the seething tide of his rage. The finesse and agility that once defined his footwork gave way to a heavier, more aggressive stance. His feet, usually light and swift under his commanding frame, now felt anchored to the floor, each step driven more by fury than finesse. This transformation in style played perilously into his opponent's advantage. Ryan, usually a master of stick-and-move tactics, found himself engaging in close-quarter brawls, trading his advantage for a risky gamble. His in-and-out maneuvers, once a blur of grace, turned into brutish, in-the-pocket exchanges. This was a terrain where his more muscular and compact opponent had the upper hand. A raw, primal contest of power replaced the tactical dance that Ryan excelled at. Ryan's precise strikes became wild swings, his movements predictable to his seasoned adversary. Seizing the moment, the opponent unleashed a devastating barrage of inside hooks with their compact frame. A vicious right hook, lands clean in the exchange, thrown with the grace of a milkbag, the power hooks brute force, cut through Ryan's defences. The blow landed with a bone-jarring impact, sending a shockwave through Ryan's frame. His world spun as he stumbled, his once dominant presence in the ring now faltering under the weight of his unchecked emotions.
The ground rushed up to meet him as he crashed onto the canvas, the taste of iron and the sting of defeat mingling in his mouth. The crowd's roar faded into a distant echo, a stark reminder of how quickly the tides of battle could turn. Robin's voice sliced through the ringing from the corner, resonating with a force that commanded attention.
"Get your shit together, JUMPIN JESUS RYAN! HEART OF GOLD AND HEAD OF STONE – GET UP, YOU LITTLE COWARD! YOU'RE LETTING IT WIN, AGAIN! STOP THIS ONION HEAD NONSENSE AND DANCE, BOX THIS FELLA – YOU'RE BETTER THAN THIS, ACT LIKE IT, BELIEVE IN IT!"
His words were more than just a call to action; they were a lifeline thrown into the stormy seas of Ryan's mind. Each syllable was drenched in the raw, unfiltered wisdom that only a life spent in the cauldron of combat could forge. Robin's tone was a volatile cocktail of fury and concern, the urgency palpable in his voice. His palms crashed against the ring mat; each hit thunderous punctuation to his fiery sermon.
"You've got the talent, kid, but it's as good as ash if you keep burning it to the ground. I'M HERE FOR YOU, IM RIGHT HERE. SNAP OUT OF IT AND BOX THIS PLASTIC PATTY! MOVE GOD DAMNIT, GET UP!"
On the canvas, Ryan lay dazed, the echo of Robin's voice ringing in his ears. It was more than a mere pep talk; it was a wake-up call that struck a chord deep within him. Amidst the haze of the crowd murmurs and the pulsating pain that coursed through his body, clarity began to emerge. Lying there, Ryan grasped the essence of Robin's message –
"coward? letting it win? Playing my ego are ya Robin...hes right though. Im throwing this shit away."
This moment, sprawled on the canvas under the glaring lights and the crowd's gaze, became a crucible of transformation. The raw emotion and the hard-hitting truth in Robin's words ignited a spark in Ryan. It was time to rise, shake off the shadows of rage, and embrace a fighter's true spirit like he had learned in Thailand – not just with fists but with heart and mind in unison.
Staggered yet stirred by the dual impact of the physical hit and Robin's piercing words, A padded fist crushed into the rings canvas, followed by a kneee and the eruption of the crowd. Ryan was back, and he began to pull himself up from the canvas. His resolve, momentarily dimmed, now reignited with a fierce, clear, calculated intensity. Memories of the gruelling hours spent in the gym flooded back to him – the relentless sparring sessions, the time spent in Thailand, the sweat and toil, and the invaluable lessons etched into his being under Robin's stern tutelage.
With a renewed spirit, Ryan stepped back into the battle, his movements now embodying controlled power and a fluidity to his step. He recalled his time fighting beside the backdrop of the "Sarama" a traditional Thai music played when in combat. The times of learning to move, fight with the music, to flow, to be fluid, to be concise. Ryan finally put it all together in the heat of battle. He had merged his inherent ferocity with the disciplined technique that Robin relentlessly drilled into him, and the mindfull practises of the years he spent under Burklerk Pinsinchai in the jungles of Chiang Mai. His style was now fully displayed, raw and visceral yet refined by countless hours of practice in mind, body and spirit.
The final rounds bell clang to a start in a clinic of skill and sheer willpower. Ryan, driven by a blend of desperation and unwavering determination, unleashed a barrage of calculated and explosive strikes. Each punch and maneuver was a nod to the efficient, no-nonsense Ukrainian style that Robin had imparted to him. Ryan moved rhythmically across the mat, steps measured and precise, executing short, angular movements and deft outside counterpunches. He had returned to his element – the dance of combat, where he felt most alive, a symphony of movement where every step and punch was a testament to his life's journey and experiences as a human being first, and as a fighter second.
In this wake-up call, Ryan reinvigorated and reminded himself of his love for the sport, the exhilarating blend of art and athleticism. He was not just fighting to win; he was celebrating boxing, combat, honouring the path he had walked with Robin, and reclaiming what it meant to be a true fighter through Burklurk Pinsinchai's Teachings.
The round pressed on, and Ryan executed his maneuvers with a surgeon's precision. First;
-- The counterpuncher; a display in timing and accuracy, delivered with the full force of training and innate skill. --
  1. He deftly slipped his opponent's cross, a move as fluid as it was swift.
  2. He angled off, creating a space wide enough for his next move.
  3. With an almost predatory precision, Ryan unleashed a powerful right cross, targeting his opponent's cheek from the angle he had just created. But Ryan wasn't done yet.
  4. He slipped out again, evading any potential counter from his disoriented opponent. The rhythm, he danced in and out with his precise timing, perfected down to inches and angles.
  5. In a final, decisive movement of the exchange, Ryan slipped in. He timed his step with a long cross that came off-beat, catching his opponent utterly off-guard. The punch landed with a satisfying impact, culminating in a perfectly executed combination. As he watched his opponent stagger, Ryan couldn't help but think, 'cya sleepy boi,' a silent acknowledgment of his dominance in this singular exchange.
This sequence was a statement. Ryan was not only back in the fight but also commanding it.
ONE!…TWO!…THREE!…FOUR!…FIVE!…SIX!...SEVEN!..EIGHT!
Ryan's opponent stands, admirable, but futile, driven by sheer will but hampered by sluggish movements, the man rose to his feet, it was clear the fight was reaching its zenith.
The opponent, gathering his remaining strength for a final stand, launched a jab, a last-ditch effort relying more on brute force than finesse. But this was a fatal mistake in Ryan's world – playing right into what Ryan was best at. Counters.
Ryan read the move with the clarity of a seasoned fighter. As the jab came, he effortlessly slipped to the right, evading the punch with a short angular step that spoke of his ring intelligence. Instantly, he countered with the same sharp cross from his right hand, followed by a devastating hook that cut through the air with lethal intent in his left. Grasping at straws, reeling from the counter, Ryans opponent threw a desperate, looping last stand punch, Ryan dipped down and left, rolling the punch with an elegance that made it seem almost effortless. He was Hunting for the Kill Shot. Seizing the moment, Ryan unleashed a ferocious left uppercut, the force of the blow lifting his opponent's chin skyward. He followed up with a right overhand, but just before impact, he halted the punch. There was no need for it; his opponent was already collapsing, the "Lights were on, but no one was Home". The fight was effectively over, Ryan's last combination is the final note, a crescendo that echoed through the ring.
As his opponent hit the canvas, the crowd erupted. Ryan stood in the center of the ring, his chest heaving, every fibre of his being alight with the thrill of victory. This wasn't just a win; it was a performance, a display of skill, heart, and the indomitable spirit of a fighter who had walked through fire and flames to the otherside and emerge victorious.
The final bell Rings with not a single chair in the arena warm; a thunderous clap erupts from the crowd. It was more than just applause; it was an acknowledgment of a battle fiercely fought by both men. In that moment ringside, in a triumphant victory, Ryan and Robin shared a look that spoke volumes, a connection far beyond the usual bounds of mentor and protégé. Their bond, tempered in the crucible of hardship and struggle, was now sealed in the glory of this defining triumph.
Standing amidst the cheers and the adrenaline-fueled euphoria, Ryan found himself momentarily lost in the tide of memories. It was a poignant reminder of the journey that had brought him here, a path marked by triumphs and losses. Robin's teachings transcended the confines of boxing; they were life lessons imprinted deep onto him. Ryan began to slowly step out of the ring; the weight of these reflections settled upon him. The victory was sweet, but it carried the weight of all sacrificed to achieve it. Robin's presence was felt strongly, a guiding force that continued to shape his path, illuminating the way forward even in the most challenging times.

2024.05.11 13:55 TheImpeccable7 The Review I Wanted: Rimowa Classic Cabin and Check-in L

Hello, my fellow Rimowa-lovers. Here is my review of the Classic Cabin (https://www.rimowa.com/gb/en/luggage/colousilvecabin/97353004.html) and Check-in L (https://www.rimowa.com/gb/en/luggage/colousilvecheck-in-l/97373004.html), both of which I recently purchased and used for a 2.5-week getaway. This included five different flights, three international and two intra-USA.

The long-term owners will judge me for this I used a cover (not see-through; those are ghastly!) for the Check-In L for all flights. I was not ready for the scratches and bumps, but these happened regardless 😅. The cabin case was checked for one of the intra-USA flights with no cover. I nearly shat myself when I was told to put it in. Of course, as expected...it acquired some scrapes and bumps. 😡

Pros (in order of personal importance)
  1. Style. The look of this case is undefeated. Nothing else comes close. The devil on my shoulder says I should write a bad review to minimize the number of people who buy the "classic." But the angel says let others have good things, too! The look is unique. 5/5 for me.
  2. Wheels/Mobility. These things glide. It is so easy to get going and sometimes not easy to stop. If you leave these upright and unattended on a moving train, they will go flying (almost literally). The inconvenience does not outweigh the positive of having such impressive wheels in such instances. It makes heavy cases so easy to manipulate and move around. Seriously, these wheels are unmatched.
  3. The lifetime warranty. There's not much to say here, but hopefully, when the time comes to use it, it will be great.
  4. Access. There is no need for padlocks or zippers. It opens and closes quickly (if you haven't overstuffed it!).
  5. Weight (yes, this is a pro; hear me out). Due to its weight, it isn't flimsy despite it moving so easily. However, the main pro here is - if you haven't learnt to pack efficiently and with intent, you'll have to learn that ASAP if you get these. It's unforgiving. Pack properly or find yourself over your allowance with ease.
  6. Customization. You can add a pop of colour to the wheel and handles. I haven't taken this up because I'm in two minds as it will be even more of an attention catchemagnet. Trust me, these cases have already gotten too much attention—they almost break necks. So much so that for specific trips later in the year (I'm going to rural and semi-rural India soon, for example), I 100% will not be using these cases. Adding the pop of colour would make it even louder. It screams, "Look at me now", i.e. take me! (any ultra-sensitive people, I have nothing against India/Indians; it's just an example: go outside and touch some grass).
Cons (in order of personal annoyance)
  1. Scratch and dent magnet. Boy, oh boy, this thing can get cut up easily. Every placement position has to be thought through. Don't lambast me, as I know it sounds silly, but I am not a "used look" / "patina" fan. I like the pristine look, but I admit that I am fighting the inevitable. These things will get dented and scratched up. Accept it or don't buy it. This is my current struggle!
  2. The dividers. While they are good quality, I am not a big fan of the zipper compartment. Things move around too easily, and the shade of grey they used makes things almost invisible (maybe I am colour-blind) once they are in there (weird, but you have to see it in person to understand). In terms of functionality, they work fine as dividers once you get the hang of them, but the zipper compartment...could be better.
  3. Rigid and inflexible. If overstuffed, the closing mechanism will fail to latch, and the case gets misaligned, i.e., the top and bottom are not aligned for it to close. (Related to point 4 below)
  4. Mechanisms can fail, and misalignments happen when the case is absolutely rammed. When the case is full (the Cabin case), the handle does not fully extend. Pressure on the inside is likely stopping it from extending further. (Related to point 3 above)
  5. Price. These cases are not cheap by any stretch. You can argue about the lifetime warranty and the build quality, but nope, in my opinion, it doesn't matter. It is pricey. If we are honest, it is a luxury item, unique luggage/cases, and the brand has a cultish following similar to Apple products. With that in mind, you get a better, or should I say, reluctant, understanding of the pricing.
  6. Weight. They are on the heavy side. Compared to other cases, you are losing about 2 kg in weight. That's a fair bit of lost allowance, roughly 10% (checked bag).

Usage - Tips and Tricks
These are helpful travel tips regardless of the case you use, but I found them to be a MUST for this specific Rimowa (classic). Since the checked case loses about 10% of your usual total allowance, it's a must to be efficient and sneaky. Every little trick counts to lighten the weight of your checked bag.
  1. Packing cubes are your best friend. Not just for the organization but for i) preventing overspill as it has an unconventional divider and ii) grouping items for easy placement and lumping bulkieheavier items together. In my case, jeans and chinos are mainly grouped, with my tees being the second heaviest 'grouped' items. This makes a big difference for point 2 below. Shoes, etc., are heavier individually, and I move these around as necessary.
  2. Place as much of the heavy stuff into the carry-on as possible. Put in the heaviest 'grouped' items (see point 1 above) and wedge as much as possible. Due to the carry-on's shape and size, you will find it more straightforward to put your largest/heaviest cubes in there (can't stress this enough—use cubes!), along with a shoe. Save yourself a couple of kilograms with the check-in.
Conclusion
Personally, the pros outweigh the cons. The look of the cases, ease of use, lifetime warranty, and the encouragement to be super-efficient/practical when packing make this a decent purchase for me. But don't be misled; these cases, while excellent, are pure luxury. The price tag is borderline outrageous, and no, it's not an affordability issue. I am biased, though, as I'm not a "luxury" person. Please give me a simple t-shirt with a small/understated single monogram versus an LV-plastered tee or bag any day of the week. These cases are in the middle as they are just a bit too shiny, a bit loud, and slightly ostentatious. But I like the silvealuminium (better if dulled down a little bit), and I love the form factor (look/shape) A LOT. So much so that I shut up and think of it as me spoiling myself and "living a little". Here you go, Rimowa...take my card.
I will see how I do with this over a couple of trips; if I can get used to the patina look, then all is well. I'm thinking of adding a classic Trunk to complete the set (you can call it OCD; if something is in a set, I always get it all; it could be kitchen utensils, furniture, whatever). I would need serious self-control not to buy the Check-In M afterwards; the Trunk would be of use on longer trips where I'm packing for a month or two away and may take two checked bags.
Despite the cons and ostentatiousness, I do not regret purchasing both, not one bit. But, of course, your mileage and experience may vary. These things can be subjective. I hope this helps someone!

2024.05.11 13:45 NovelInfluence2035 Difficulty dealing with bride about her bachelorette

My best friend of 18 years is getting married. She was engaged once 7 years ago. She had a bachelorette, had us buy tickets for her destination wedding but then called it off. I was happy she called it off, but just to preface.
She is having another bachelorette. This really irritated me but I said nothing since she always said the first wasn’t the one she really wanted since she was doing a destination wedding. I figured a girls trip is a girls trip, I’ll have fun.
Her MOH has done ZERO planning. She booked the hotel that was it. My friend has asked me to help with hich I happily agreed to since I know the area we are going to well and just enjoy planning.
Unfortunately, my friend has turned into a bridezilla imo. She has 13 girls going then invited another 6. These leaves us with 19 people to plan for. This has made finding dining reservations incredibly difficult. I called and emailed 14 places (the area we are visiting isn’t huge). She turned down another 3 I suggested for “not fitting the vibe”. 3 places flat out said it would be considered a private event which comes with a site fee so those were out. No one else answered. I reached out to a contact I had, who as a favor, said she can rework the tables next to each other to avoid the site fee and make it like a regular reservation ala carte dining. My friend said no she wants the tables connected. This is where I start to get pissed. I used a contact to help and she acts like it isn’t good enough. Finally, another place answered. Sure we can fit you at 8:30pm. I text my friend the good news! She said, tell them no. The place doesn’t “fit the vibe” and I really wanna see who else (restaurants) answers. I was fuming. We finally had a place willing to take all of us and it again, isn’t good enough. I have gone above and beyond in my opinion between reservations, decorations, gifts for her and the most I get back is a thanks so much!
I have stopped answering and have decided to refuse to help anymore. I don’t want to strain our friendship and maybe I’m just venting but she is going to ask for help again and I need to politely, say no. I’m not sure how to go about it.

2024.05.11 13:41 Ok-Fan4759 My love Story and Religion...

So there's This Girl let's call her Mukti(19F). So I(19M) knew her from 6th grade. We used to hate each other and fought alot. It was over grades mostly. I used to be an self absorbed A-hole too.
I met her again in 11th grade. I changed quite alot after 6th grade. We started talking. She was weak in English and I helped her( You know in 11th they used to study together...I mean yeah Abhishek helped her English and Muktika helped him in political science. But they always talked more or less lmao I mean they didn't really study they just spend time talking. Our classmates even told them "You are studying or talking?" Both of them always laughed.... You know it was in 11th at the start of everything ) And I fell in love with her. After 2-3 months I proposed and she said No. She told me she can't get in relationship because of family and there wasn't any other reason. My cousin asked her why she rejected me and she told her she can't get into a relationship because of strict family and casteism She rejected everyone and never been In a relationship. I was fine with it and we remained friends. But I missed school for one day. The next day she started crying and told me how my "Friend" made a joke about us. She was crying and saying that it will ruin her reputation. I told my "Friend" to apologise and he did. But I learnt that she was fine with joke last day but her friend let's call her "Meera". She provoked mukti.
I didn't do anything but she still was angry and didn't talk to me. I was in a pretty bad mental state at that time. My friends some of who were rejected by her also provoked me. I was so stupid that I listened to them and pointed out mistakes in her question and lowered her marks in half yearly exam. She got pretty emotional and said "I trusted you and you would do this?". I felt so guilty. My friends provoked me for weeks but I was the one being stupid. I apologized and Tried to make things right. It got better. I suffered from some illness during yearly exam and almost died (Not exaggerating). But I met her again during exams. She asked me how I was. After that we met when we came to check the result. We talked for some time. I was first In school and she was second. I congratulated her and she congratulated me. And than comes...the 12th grade.
On first day she completely ignored me and talked with everyone except me. I asked her what happened but she would just laugh. She would always complain about my homework to teacher. My only true friend tried to make things right. He talked to her about it and she started talking to me. We talked for 2 hours and everything was great. But next day she suddenly stopped. She told me please leave me alone. Also her friend meera was absent last day. Whenever she was with Mukti, mukti's behaviour changed. Meera never liked me, and her reason was because of I used to be in 6th grade. I mean we were just kids and she just met me in 11th grade. Whenever she and mukti fought she would say bad things about mukti behind her back. One day I asked her what happened, she told me we were never friends or anything. On her birthday I tried to give her a chocolate as a gift. Meera refused. I told her I want to give mukti the gift. Mukti asked me why I care so much about her? I didn't answer, she said leave me alone.
Last day I was absent in school. My friend was trying to make things right again. Mukti told him she just doesn't want to talk with me. She asked my friend about some other girl I was talking to. My friend told her that she was just a friend. Mukti told him I don't want to talk to him if He is interested in some other girl. Me and mukti still don't talk with each other. My cousin who studies in same class as me told me about meera and how she always provokes mukti. Also I learnt that Arjun( My Friend who provoked me against mukti) was talking behind my back.
Finally I fixed my Relationship with Her. She didn't forced me to become her brother my tying rakhi on my hand. Started talking like normal.
So today I showed her the chats and how arjun tried to influence me. She believed me. My cousin Bhavna asked her if you would marry Abhishek if he becomes an IAS? She said she would not marry me even if I became ias. I was pretty said and I was crying. My friend was with me. She didn't knew because she was dancing. My bestfriend yogita knew and asked me why are you crying? I am worried. She was sitting near Muktika. I was talking with my friend. She called me and said "There's a chance that she would agree." Yogita said If she is single till you became an ias, she would agree. I said let's talk clearly. I said I my love isn't like that. She( muktika) said I know. I said if I became ias would you agree. She said if you became an ias and convince my parents than I am ready. I said what about you? She said it's her parents choice. She said you have 7 years. I said will you wait? She said Yes I will.
Everything was great. We were having a good time and talking with each other and it was just good
but today she declined and said I just said that so you wouldn't hurt yourself and I am sorry. She got sad too and went home and was depressed. She said it's just dreams and we won't be able to achieve them
Next week I tried to talk to her and she said I can't talk to you. The teachers asked me what is happening and why I look depressed.
Muktika came and explained the whole thing. The teacher even said Abhishek doesn't have wrong feelings for you ( physical relationship). Muktika I can't ma'am. I don't want to ruin my family's name( caste problem).
We stopped talking after it
I can't forget her and I can't fall in love with Anyone else. I still want to try and I am obsessed with her I don't like when any other guy talks to her even after knowing that she won't be anyone else's. I want her and i dream about her. I try but I can't forget her. I am afraid to move on.
Now what happens next So after the fallout. We all were sitting in classroom and there was a cooking stove ad. I was Depressed from inside but still tries to act happy. I also noticed Muktika eyes doesn't look same. They aren't as bright and she's sad.
So kuldeep (my friend and a guy of our friend group. He knows me and Muktika since 6th grade) And me were talking. I told him while smiling "If she marries me I will do all the cooking cleaning and everything"
Kuldeep told me "Check this out" He said loudly Abhishek will do all the cooking and cleaning for his future wife!
Everyone laughed and i too and we had good laugh.
But Muktika told her friends and I heard them. She told them while smiling "He should learn it will be useful" and they all smiled and laughed.
Also i explained girls his feelings. I wants to clear UPSC and convince her parents for marriage. Muktika will only marry whoever her father chooses. She doesn't have a choice and she won't make the decision even if she has feelings.
Every girl in school knows how much i love Muktika. Girls told me she likes you too. She looks at you whenever you aren't looking and after teacher leaves the class she sometimes asks her friends "What did he taught?".
I said I know but she won't talk because of all the problem teachers caused.
So teachers essentially told me and Muktika to not talk with each other because they can't have a future together because of different religion (she's jain and I'm hindu). I didn't listen and Muktika belived them.
Her friends told me clear UPSC and she will agree and parents will agree.
But Muktika doesn't talk to me. Last day my friend asked her why? She said "Listen please understand I don't want to talk. If My family finds out it will cause trouble. That's why I don't talk to any boys. There's no other reason I don't talk to him. My parents don't even let me come school alone"
Also last week Muktika was crying saying why doesn't he love someone else? There's many girls but why me?
Muktika usually slaps or get's angry after just a propose. But with me it was different. she doesn't want any other guy too She will get angry if someone says he likes you etc But for me she would just say I don't want to talk about it
You know when teachers Learned about this situation they got angry and blamed her and me. She started crying and said "I don't care if he dies today or Tomorrow!"
Man I don't think she meant that...
In upsc thing she said it's yes for me but convince my family and said no next day...
You know people said she only said this so you won't hurt yourself etc etc Dude when she said yes Muktika was happy and talking about her day with me. I was just looking in her eyes. Muktika said in a childish grumpy way (in a cute way too) "You aren't listening to me?! Alright I will stop..." I said while smiling it's been awhile since we talked and I just wanted to hear your voice without me interrupting it. She looked at me and smiled and continued
Also on last day my friend tried to talk to Muktika. He said atleast say yes or no to him She said I don't want to say anything and left.
Muktika's friend later told my friend that she forgot to do some questions in exam because she was lost in her thoughts. They said she may pretend to not care but she surely was thinking about him at that time.
Later meera (Muktika's friend) told my friend that muktika regretted saying yes to the whole upsc and marriage thing.. That's why she was lost in thoughts.
Muktika said to meera that she got swayed away by yogita that's why she agreed. When her friends asked why did she agree. She said it felt right at that time
She was jain and I was hindu. And people literally kill here because of intercaste or inter-religion marriage.
It's been a month since I saw her and yeah I still love her. I'm preparing for UPSC and...yep still doing the best that I can :)

2024.05.11 13:32 InUteroX Comtac XPI 5-Pole solution?

Hello, before asking I have really put all my effort into trying to find on Reddit the solution for my issue but I couldnt so I am asking here, if its already answered I am sorry but I couldnt find it.
Basically, I bought the Comtac XPI (MT20H682FB-92EU) with 5-Pole plug and waiting them to arrive, meanwhile i need a PTT for it.
Also i am interested which PTT that are not expensive (not the cheapest also) are compactible and fully functional.
  1. I have my INVISIO V60 repro from my FCS AMPs and i was wondering will it work? basically i would need the: U-385U to kn6 if i am correct. I have already the U174U to kn6 and i dont know will it work with it.
  2. I have heard it need to be amplified, some say it doesnt need to be amplified to use with Baofengs radios? So i dont really know what to belive anymore.
  3. Did anyone use the Earmor M52 PTT is it fully functional?
  4. I saw some people use adapters which one you could recommend (under 30$ / 30€) there sre some on aliexpress and around the web but doesnt know which one will suit?
So basically I need the best solution regarding ptt and adapter so i can make my final decision. The best solution would be my v60 FCS to work since is really good, reliable and water resistant (i dont know if its amplified).
What are your advices did anyone encounter this issue?
PS i have 2 baofeng radios (kenwood pin) UV-82 and UV-17R
Thank you in advance
Warm regards

2024.05.11 13:31 Ok-Fan4759 My love story...

She was weak in English and I helped her( You know in 11th they used to study together...I mean yeah i helped her English and Muktika helped me in political science. But we always talked more or less lmao I mean we didn't really study they just spend time talking. Our classmates even told us "You are studying or talking?" Both of us would always laugh...
She kept trying to talk to me and I would just ignore her. She tried to approach me alot.
I didn't answer, she left
So teachers essentially told me and Muktika to not talk with each other because they can't have a future together because of different religion (she's jain and I'm H-indu).
She said it felt right at that time.
It's been more than month since I saw her... And man I still love her more than ever. I'm preparing for UPSC now and yeah i guess I want to try to make it work...
