My wife and I recently bought a set of china from an estate sale. We aren't all that concerned about valuation (though if we were to find out it's worth several thousand -- highly unlikely -- we'd be happy to part with it for the cash), but we're trying to understand the set better. There's a couple of different types of plates and bowls that are slightly different from each other, but we aren't quite sure why.
The set is made by American Limoges. On the pieces that have a maker's mark (not all do), there's a single-digit number next to the mark. These vary from piece to piece and we're trying to understand the meaning.
Does anyone have any good recommendations for references to this sort of thing? Every time I do a search, I get TONS of information on Limoges -- the French Limoges -- china, but little on the American Limoges sets. I can find replacements at replacements.com... but I'm not worried about that, I want information.
Any ideas? (I'd post this on finechina... but I need prior approval... and I'd post on antiques, but apparently it has to be at least 100 years old first... ugh).

Hey fellow sword buddies.
So what started off as just a fun hobby, I have now made into a hobby that I can actually profit a small and humble amount of money from. Basically what I do is order swords from China that have cheap zinc alloy fittings, fake stingray skin etc. but the blades themselves are of actual decent quality. I replace the zinc alloy fittings with brass or iron fittings that are of good quality, apply real stingray skin, and rewrap the tsuka (it hurts my fingers but I love it). If there is blade rattle in the saya I use methods to stop it. If the says is loose around the habaki I use methods to fix it. I do everything in my power to make it a solid, well built sword. And I have been rather successful. The last one I sold actually came with antique tsuba fuchi kashira that was made in edo period Japan with emperor node in the samegawa and everything. Looked like an actual nihonto and sold it for around 350 bucks if I remember correctly. I've even branched out and sold actual nihonto I ordered from Japan. Every sword I have listed don't usually remain listed for long and get bought up within just a few short days. Anyway, I have this one sword that has been listed for almost a month now and just can't seem to get anyone to buy it. I am not too proud to admit that I was lazy and didn't tie the sageo and just tightly wrapped it around the saya. The Ito I wrapped in a style that I seen a lot of tachi use. The fittings are high quality brass from hanbon forge. Maybe you guys see something I don't see.

This was actually from an antique shop in Fort Atkinson. My purchase (a jar of cool rocks and stones hehe) was wrapped in old news paper and thought it was really neat that it was from Madison. The hot dog poster on the back is great. & look at those prices!!

It's originally from a British seller that no longer carries them and retailed for $120, but I got it for $25! Pretty excited about it. However, I have a toddler and a 100-lb dog who are two bulls in a china shop. Is there a way that I can secure the bowl to the table without ruining either? I was thinking of just sticking a bunch of Command strips to the bottom, but I don't know if that's advisable. It's pretty heavy, shallow, and wide with a narrow base.

I have so much art and trim, and these huge windows. The trim is a pretty bright royal blue, and the neutral leans cold. There's a lot of art in the room - more behind me, as well as pocket doors. It's *busy,* even when it isn't this cluttered. (Note dog on lower right corner, who rejects his bed.)
I'm torn between a monochromatic blue rug or a neutral with an understated floral pattern. How do you style rugs? I'm also getting the antique couch reupholstered after I pick the rug.

I just painted my Victorian living room- there’s a ton of blue trim and a lot of art and a lot of light (it’s not as large a room as it appears in the picture). Also, dog.
I’m getting the gorgeous antique couch finally reupholstered in a soft warm greige. I’ll match the curtains and chairs to the couch.
What color rug? It’s impossible to exactly match the blue. I looooove floral patterned rugs but maybe it’s too busy and I should stick to solid neutrals? Or maybe a simple pattern?

My personal investigation into HooBuy.
First of all, I would like to start off by saying that I am NOT being held at gunpoint by a Chinese counterfeit mafia or sponsored by any competing agent to say this.
Order processing / Shipping dispatch times.
Since HooBuy is a new agent, they lack so much infrastructure to handle the massive amount of orders from the tiktok kids. Which makes ordering items take up to 3 weeks according to real users. Now with shipping it’s the same thing, 1-2 weeks to ship out your haul.
Sketchy Customer Support
Their customer support is a pile of shit on their website. Unusable at all. The only good Customer Support is on Discord which does an okay job. However they are very unpleasant to deal with.
Huge amount of Bots and sponsored influencers
Now this is the most concerning one, HooBuy is known for it’s massive advertising on social media. Kind of like Temu but with reps. Bots are all over reddit and tiktok, their goal is to brainwash people into using HooBuy. They make posts saying: “10kg is $50” for example on tiktok. Now on Reddit they are more believable, they post QC pictures and W2C links (specifically sneakers.) Those bots are mostly created on March/April of this year (2024) but some are 1 year old at most. (Image attached)
They have 1-10 karma and very low post/comment rate. And it’s only about glazing HooBuy and its great capability to purchase reps during the PB raid.
Those bots now may also make posts about “receiving their haul” but it doesn’t add up. Everyone else is experiencing delays but they get their haul?
What I personally think they do is actually buy stuff from HooBuy, but shipping it within China. And if they need to send any proof of them buying that specific package from HooBuy, they Photoshop the receiver’s address and country. Also, some of the bots use very similar if not the same images of their “haul” I have seen on Yupoo. Or used by PB tiktok affiliates to promote certain shops.
Hauls
99% of the real HooBuy customers are either bragging about their packages being either dispatched or crying about it being delayed.
Now, HooBuy has been around for a month or two. So hauls should be arriving by now, correct? Well no, there are delays and delays on the HooBuy system. Some may say: “Well it’s because of an overload” It’s not, even if there is a delay. That means there is something critically wrong in the management of the HooBuy warehouse. There are agents who I have used during the raid that ordered by orders within 10 minutes and shipped a package within 1 day. Fabulous, meanwhile HooBuy takes weeks.
There can’t be that much orders coming in that the agent has to spend all their shift ordering from weidian or taobao.
Affiliates
HooBuy is known for handing out tons of cash to rep influencers on tiktok of even subreddits…. This is to further promote their malicious actions. That’s the main reason HooBuy is known and used by Tiktok kids. It’s because they trust the influencers that the 2 month old comapany that used to be based in an apartment until recently will definitely not run away with their money.
QC This is not a big issue but the QC picture quality is dog shit on HooBuy, it looks like they’re using a rep iPhone to take that photo. This leads to the 6th topic.
NOT CONFIRMED! Child labour within HooBuy
Now, we have all seen the video of HooBuy flexing their new warehouse and showing us the inside. There you can see some very young unmotivated faces. This may be the reason for the slow processing, poor QC etc. Young inexperienced workers. And Unmotivated workers are present in the HooBuy warehouse.
What’s the future of HooBuy?
Well, I personally believe HooBuy is not a need agent but a rebranded website of a popular agent. Some people think it’s HagoB** but i’m not sure.
What I think will happen is that there will be so much delays that people will realise that their haul is never arriving, and soon after that HooBuy’s social media contacts and Website will vanish forever. Or even if they turn out to be real, they will definitely be the next agent to be in the raid list. We know how that ends by the example set by HB,PB and WGB.

Frenchie rescue from dog meat market in China
Meet Lula, our 6 year old Frenchie rescue. She was in rough shape when rescued but the foster family did a great job of calming her fears and getting her cleaned up. Hair on her ears is finally starting to grow back. We’ve had her just over 2 weeks and she’s a total love bug!! The foster family had her mostly trained on pee pads and I wasn’t going to do that. We take her out every 2 hours (she doesn’t always go) and she’s starting to signal that she needs to go out. She hasn’t had an accident inside since the first week.
However, she still pees in her crate at night. Not much but she definitely pees. She goes out one last time at 11 pm and is out again at 6:30 am. I know she can hold it that long because she does during the day, despite multiple outdoor opportunities. I removed the bedding from her crate and that seemed to help but she still pees in there every couple of nights. How do I get her to stop doing that?
Also, she went from love bug to Cujo the first time at the dog park. She behaved like a total bully and got aggressive with a couple of smaller dogs. She was clearly anxious, so we immediately left (after apologizing). We have 2 other dogs in our extended family and we haven’t done the introduction yet (I know, neutral territory both on leashes, etc.). My expectations are coexistence but are there other suggestions to help her relax? I don’t think the dog park is in the cards anymore.

I have multiple chronic illnesses that prevent me from working even part time. I have spinal instability and can’t drive comfortably for more than 20 minutes so no instacart, delivery, etc. I have vision issues and migraines so I couldn’t do online work for more than an hour per day. I’ve considered dog walking but between my neck and shoulder issues I could only do small dogs. No plasma donation, would be too hard on my body.
At the moment I only do date night babysitting close to my home and am selling my antique collection on facebook marketplace but I need more income than that.

I didn't know content creation was a thing. And when I did know content creation was a thing, I didn't really know it was MY thing. I also don't know if content creator is a me anyway, or if I am just a Smerf and I like to share my passion for the things I am passionate about with the community who seems to enjoy me doing it.
Before Twitch, before Justin.TV, before YouTube........
I don't know if it was raining, and I don't know if I was sad, and I don't know if it was grey and time was going really really slowly. But I do know that paints a rather nice picture, so lets assume it was.
And then dad came home, and he brought with him a Golden China.
Essentially a knock off NES/Famicom. SA was going through sanctions because the racist government pissed everybody off. Basically that means companies didn't want to sell anything to our country to show they disagreed with the way things ran around here. So a lot of our electronics were grey imports or clones.
Damn was this thing amazing. I played for hours. When my sister was home I would play Mario with her. When my dad was home I played Road Fighter with him. And the first time we saw the Superman Easter egg we couldn't believe it. It was the first secret I had ever seen in a game, and I had to show it off to everybody I knew. It made me very curious about what other secrets were hiding in the games I was playing.
I would spend so much time going through everything looking for these treasures.
My mother wasn't big into playing games, but she took a crack at Tetris from time to time. But I just loved it when she would sit there watching me play.
Times moved on, and SEGA released the Megadrive. This thing was insane. I can still remember Christmas morning, under the tree, a present to me from Santa. The console and a 4 in 1 cartridge with The Flintstones, Mickey Mouse, Tiny Toons and Sonic.
I asked him to bring me The Lion King, but my mother says he couldn't find it anywhere in the North Pole. I wasn't even mad, I had no clue what Sonic the Hedgehog was, but he was about to take over my child hood.
The TV in the lounge was rather big and back then we all had wall units, massive cupboard thingies that the TV's slid into. And once in, there was no way to get behind it. My dad had set up two video machines on the wall unit. One went to the TV in the lounge, and the other to the TV in their bedroom. So whenever I wanted to play, my mother or my father would plug my SEGA into the video machine, and then tune the TV in. This was the process of turning a tiny little wheel on the TV until it picked up the frequency of the video machine coming though the aerial connection on the back of it.
I watched. And I learned.
And when nobody was home to help me play my games, I would climb up onto the wall unit, climb onto the small piece of the TV that stuck out, and pull myself up to the video machine. Plug in my console, tune in the TV, and keep the volume nice and low so that I could hear my parents car coming up the road. I would then just grab the cables and rip them out of the video machine. Change the channel back. And toss the system into the cupboard it stayed in. Then ask them nicely to set it up for me so I could play.
As I got older and could get this done faster, I would start sneaking out of bed when my family was asleep, to play by myself in the warm glow of the TV, looking for those treasures, to show them when they had time to watch. Then pack it all back up again and get to bed before anybody would wake up.
I don't know why I tried, but one day I hit the record button on the video machine, and it captured the gameplay. I had just been messing around pushing buttons, and I had made my first bit of gaming "content". It was the craziest thing. And I invited all my friends over to come and watch. They loved it. And I even let them record some of their own gameplay.
But I got bored of it, and I think they did too. And I stopped.
My dad was filming weddings for his friends as a little hobby. And he was making copies of the tapes in the lounge for them all. I asked him how he was able to make all the tapes have the same thing on them, when he had only filmed the wedding once, and he showed me how duplication worked between the machines. So I started trying to do cool things in the games I played, uncover secrets, reach an area that was hard to reach or beat a boss fight. I wanted my tapes to have something more interesting on them, I didn't do this to keep people watching, I just seemed to have more fun if there was some sort of goal or narrative. I would then use the duplication thing my dad had shown me and make tapes to give to my friends. And they kept watching.
As time went on I slowly lost interest. I had played all the games, made all the tapes, hurt myself plenty of times falling off the wall unit, but I had really started liking people watching me. And needed something to add some spice.
I recall watching my dad, playing with his video camera and doing some simple editing. He would film a wedding invitation with a nice backdrop, and then use some box with buttons on it to display some text on screen. He would then go through his wedding footage in one video machine, pause it when he found something he wanted, set the other video machine to record, un-pause the video, record a little bit, then pause it all and find the next thing he wanted.
He was creating a highlight reel.
I had never seen anything like it. Sure it wasn't fancy and doesn't stand up to what we can all do today. But this was so fun and exciting to watch him play with his video set up, that I wanted to try it too. And I did. I even learned how to connect a microphone to the setup and record knock knock jokes to "create" better "content".
I can't tell how much time I spent doing this. I just know that when DVD's arrived on the scene, and video machines were out, I felt very empty for a very long time.
But making little videos wasn't the only thing I enjoyed.
Playing games for people and bonding with them was a large part of my childhood. In fact it is a large part of my adulthood as well. All my closest friendships were formed around the games we played. I got to spend time with my sister and my father while they watched and I played and we spoke. My best memories are these moments. Even the sad ones.
My mother had a jacked up spine, like I have a jacked up spine, and she ended up needing surgery. It went well, but the recovery process was very long and tough on her. She was stuck in bed for about a month before she could really start getting up and moving around.
A few years before this my parents had gotten a divorce. And my mother had since remarried. The new husband didn't really get along with my sister and I. And often made us feel very unwanted around him and my mother.
And I felt he had taken my mother away from me.
But when she was stuck in bed, and he had to work, I would bunk from college and wait for him to leave, then I would get my purple GameCube with it's little built in handle, Resident Evil 4 and go wake my mother up.
OK sure she probably wanted to rest. But I wanted mother and son time and I wanted to play games and I wanted to talk. And I truly think she loved it. She was incredibly bored and down in the dumps and I wanted to cheer her up.
She was the first person to see me play a game from start to finish.
I missed the kick off of YouTube. I missed Justin.TV. I even missed the big boom of Twitch. It never clicked, that these platforms were built around the thing I had cared so deeply about as a kid, and I can't help but feel that I missed out on something. But I am trying now.
Putting myself out there and going live is fantastic. It takes me back to these memories and it really brings an incredible sense of joy. When things are good they are really good. And when things are not so good, well, we keep pushing for the good things.
There is probably no chance that I will keep up with the big dogs. I can barely keep up with the little dogs. But I enjoy streaming. I have a passion and I want people to see it, that may be ego, or extremely codependent and that may be unhealthy.
But I don't mind.
Because that is me.
I am a Smerf.
