2024.05.20 04:15 Killy728 Did the DSi Capture Card End with Katsukity?

Did the DSi Capture Card End with Katsukity?
Preface:
This is an essay, of sorts, compiling all of the information about the Dsi Capture Card that I could find. Information may be missing or inaccurate, but what I present is my current understanding of the project.
I have an interest in reviving the concept and properly archiving every step of the process so that anyone can make a Dsi capture system. Though I didn't succeed in making the project available for people to purchase, I do hope this is a step in the right direction.
Iā€™ll start the story and go into as much of the technical side as I can manage. If you wish to skip the story, head to the ā€œTechnicalā€ section.

=====Story====

Introduction:
Is there a practical reason to have a Dsi capture card when the Original DS and the New 3DS/2DS family of systems can do everything the Dsi can do and more?
No, no there isnā€™t.
For someone like myself who adores the Dsi platform, the idea and novelty of a Dsi capture card is of great interest to me. From what I can find, the Dsi Capture card has been lost to time. Thanks to the Internet Archiveā€™s Wayback Machine, what was once lost can hopefully be found.
Body:
Kastuskity was the sole provider of Dsi Capture systems and far as I could tell, one of the major players in the DS/3DS capture card providers and installers in the mid 2010s. That was, up until September 13th, 2016, when the Dsi Capture systems were removed from Katsukityā€™s shop. I was unable to find a direct reason as to why the sale stopped, but a quote from the Nisetoro Wiki suggested difficulty as over 40 cables were needed. On the store page, you can see how a custom bottom shell was needed in order to house that capture unit.
https://preview.redd.it/0kb4jtc7ph1d1.jpg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b2c76bf6e0efc230a8940bd9350d79160cc74e6
That, and Iā€™d assume a lack of of sales due to the prevalence of 3DS capture systems must have lead to that product being phased out. This is just my best guess based on nothing
On February 2nd, 2019, Twitter (X) user .

Their Twitter (X) has been inactive since July of 2018, their YouTube has been inactive since June of 2018, and their website and blog have all been shuttered ( I won't hyperlink these two as one redirects to a scam). Their Facebook Page also seems to have the same fate, but I cannot confirm that. From my current understanding, Katsukity has disappeared from the internet and took whatever knowledge and software with them.
Katsukityā€™s partner in Europe, Stefan Merki and American Inventor Neal Tew (Loopy) appear to still manufacture, install, and sell capture cards on their website, but only for the Classic DS and New 3DS/2DS. As of the writing of this post, Merki is still active on the websiteā€™s Discord Page (see their website for the invite link) and Loopy is active on their forum
It is on Merkiā€™s Discord Server that I was able to receive a lot of information regarding the Dsi Capture System and its development. The most important, being, a video posted to Nicovideo by the user ćƒ”ćƒ”ćƒ³ (Pippin).
This video, dating back to May 21st, 2010, shows the process of making a Nisetoro Capture card for the Dsi and its success (The videos loaded better for me on Firefox).

Their blog, which can only be accessed through Internet Archiveā€™s Wayback Machine, has their blog posts of the project as well as a ZIP containing the pinout for the Chameleon USB and various pieces of software (For lack of a better term for .svf, .dpf, .pin, .pof, .qpf,.qsf and .v files)
From here, Iā€™ll go into the technical side of this.

====Technical====

~(((((From here, I have to stick a disclaimer. As much as it pains me to say, anything involving Circuit Boards and programming is well beyond my understanding. I will continue with any and all information that I have pointing to the components and software used for the project, but I will not pretend to understand any of it. Forgive my ignorance in advance. )))))~
In Pippinā€™s video, all of the test pins tapped and attached to a Chameleon USB were listed on their blog.
https://preview.redd.it/4qb47xqiph1d1.jpg?width=756&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3d555543575d1397bd1f3bb7f3251d2ef8fd5e9b
There, with the pinout sheet is a ZIP file containing various pieces of software (more on that later). I have the Pinout Sheet below in English.
https://preview.redd.it/ispt1t0lph1d1.png?width=368&format=png&auto=webp&s=c40bc7cea87f7f61aa3a839bf9909e8dba77a173
Katsuityā€™s store page for the Dsi capture kits also mentions a Chameleon USB FX 2.
https://preview.redd.it/wab7d5nmph1d1.jpg?width=690&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8652968ff3d03da7ae9a2b9182e062ffd7dbfe66
On the Fake TroCaptcha website, the process for creating a capture card for the Original DS was explained further. I can only vaguely see the images of the Chameleon board that Pippin has in their blog, but as far as I can tell, it is the same board.
https://preview.redd.it/52s3rk6oph1d1.jpg?width=2592&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=35451424c69eb18216f4a5e413534e2a4d333220

Following the link on the board to this website with the Chameleon USB FX2 featured prominently /)as a ā€œHotā€ item. When searching their shop, which is local only as far as I can tell, the Chameleon USB FX2 MiniB Kit is out of stock and appears to have been discontinued in 2019 (If it means anything, that board version was V1.2 instead of V1.1, so even if it was available, I do not know if thatā€™d cause issues).
https://preview.redd.it/kyhet19rph1d1.jpg?width=1320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b9b15fb0f9d749e3ce5c17599475797713d4028a
Searching Google for the Chameleon brings up an OSHPark shared fine of a Chameleon USB FX2 by user splash5. Though this board appears to use the same chips, it's circuit layout and components looks entirely different than the one Pippin used and the one on the ā€œHow to make a Fake tro captureā€ page. I really cannot wrap my brain around trying to follow traces to see if this would work, but given the amount of components on this board vs the one for the DSi Capture Card, I imagine i'd have to spend time bridging traces where components went.

https://preview.redd.it/a635h3csph1d1.png?width=2460&format=png&auto=webp&s=a1f40410a57ef22c9d0b9a0d855e30306a5ff139

Going through splash5ā€™s Github page, it would seem they are implementing a Chameleon for game capture on the Wonderswan.
That is the first major hurdle. Where can I get a comparable board? Does the Chameleon USB FX2 need to be recreated from the images in these forums?
For the software side, it is my understanding that Pippin already provided it within the ZIP. In the description of their video, they say that the software is the same as the Original DS. This is, of course, assuming that the software is the same as the one used back in 2010.
Recreating DSi capture system is well beyond my ability, I will be the first to say that. I do hope this information can help some who can revive this unique blip in DS console history.

====DSI XL Capture System====

I have this pie-in-the-sky dream of assembling and using a DSi XL with a capture card in it, but what my research dug up was a need for commissioning people much smarter than I to create the capture board and injecting the code.
That is simply something I can not do right now.
For anyone who reads this, I do hope that this pinout I made is helpful.
https://preview.redd.it/r94htkjwph1d1.jpg?width=518&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=13f53780f019cb237f84be6680a9d13d1a9d21a4
This is a pinout referencing the pinout from Pippin as well as the DSi XL test points on DSiBrew. I have to trust it is accurate as I do not know of a way to test it otherwise. Entries highlighted in Red have the same comment, but the numbering sequence suggests the order I put them is correct.
Anyway, that is enough for me.

2024.05.20 04:13 5409321 Why I hate Void Fiend

Hey guys, I hate Void Fiend. Here's why: 1. Their abilities feel extremely awkward to use in both forms 2. Healing actively hurts their corrupted form so you have to rely on mobility and damage reduction exclusively and skip out on items you could scrap in the future 3. The beam in the corrupted form seems alot longer than it actually is 4. The corrupted form is extremely hard to control which is fine but when you play coop you have to make everybody else wait on you to get your corruption meter to where you want it 5. The fact that there is a animation that stops you from moving when you switch between forms 6. Needing to take damage to help your corruption in a game where damage usually one shots you or in E8 is permanent 7. Corrupted special. 8. The primary attack slows you down while you use it making the short range feel even worse 9. My biggest issue by far is the corruption meter being affected by void items. Void items make this character so much better to play but nearly every one is completely awful on them. From wungus being a healing item to void crit completely ruining the fastest way to build corruption Anyways guys, im gonna go play more Void Fiend. Thanks for reading!(i will get a good run this time i will get a good run this time i will get a good run this time)

2024.05.20 03:59 ink10_sonic-man The samurai in naruto buff ideas

The samurai in naruto buff ideas
So as when the samurai in naruto were kinda sucked so I have an idea to buff them, and I'd love to hear your ideas as well
  • Chakra reserves: Samurai can have a natural well of chakra, possibly even larger than some ninja since they focus solely on building their physical strength alongside chakra reserves.
  • Simple channeling: Instead of needing complex hand signs, samurai can focus their chakra through specific stances or breathing techniques to activate jutsu.
Jutsu for Samurai:
  • Focus on buffs and battlefield control: Since their jutsu don't require hand signs, they can't be as elaborate as ninjutsu. Samurai jutsu could focus on enhancing their strength, speed, or durability in short bursts. They could also emit blasts of chakra for mid-range attacks or create defensive barriers.
Elemental Jutsu: Some samurai might have an affinity for a certain element, allowing them to infuse their weapons or create elemental attacks like fire bursts or earth walls.
Balancing Samurai and Ninja:
  • Limited Jutsu Complexity: While samurai jutsu can be used more frequently, they lack the versatility and power of ninjutsu. They might not be able to counter complex genjutsu or powerful ninjutsu attacks without resorting to strategic maneuvering.
  • Reliance on Physical Prowess: Samurai would still need to rely on their swordsmanship and physical skills as the primary way to defeat opponents. Chakra enhancements would give them an edge but not an absolute advantage.
Historical Ties:
We know tobirama made jutsu like the flying raijin, and the resagan (correct me if I'm wrong) those jutsu that don't need hand signs. We could easily say tobirama saw a samurai doing something similar and got thst inspiration to make his jutsus.
Of course this is my idea again I'd love to hear yours

Okay first off, goes without saying. If youā€™re like 35, please donā€™t message me. Iā€™m sure youā€™re lovely but Iā€™m not interested in that. Also if your post history is filled with loads of sexual stuff, also please donā€™t message me, sorry lol but that puts me off.
So, now thatā€™s out the way lol. Iā€™m Zoe, Iā€™m 17, live in England. Iā€™m in college, doing history, psychology and English lit. I hate it so much and cannot wait to be done with it. Iā€™m also a gymnast, nearly made it to team GB before but I got injured and lost my chance. Hopefully will get back there this year though šŸ™
Gymnastics keeps me pretty busy, I have a lot of two a days and when Iā€™m not training, Iā€™m in the gym but I do try and have a life outside of that. I have two dogs who need a lot of cuddles and walks, I also like to go out a lot. I go clubbing sometimes (yes mr bouncer that ID saying Iā€™m 20 is real I promise) and I go out with friends a lot too.
Looks wise I donā€™t know how to describe myself, Iā€™m happy to just send pics but Iā€™m like 5ā€™2. Blonde, good shape. I donā€™t know šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø I have three tattoos too lol, yes not very legal but one of my friends is a tattoo artist so he did it for me lol.
I donā€™t know exactly what sorta guy Iā€™m looking for, would prefer someone confident and active I guess, as most of what I do is outside. Also donā€™t be younger than me please lol. Outside of that I donā€™t mind.
Also, please say more than hey šŸ™ effort is really attractive so please introduce yourself properly! :)

2024.05.20 03:53 rvinverter1 Essential Components and Structures of BESS

Essential Components and Structures of BESS
battery energy storage system

Components of Battery Energy Storage Systems

A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) primarily consists of four parts: the Battery System (BS), Power Conversion System (PCS), Battery Management System (BMS), and Monitoring System. In practical applications, for ease of design, management, and control, the BS, PCS, and BMS are often reconfigured into modular BESS units, while the Monitoring System is primarily used to monitor, manage, and control one or more modular BESS units.
1. Battery System
The battery system is the primary carrier for energy storage and release in a BESS. Its capacity and operational status directly affect the systemā€™s energy conversion capability, safety, and reliability. By connecting individual cells in series or parallel, the capacity of the battery system can be expanded, forming a large-capacity battery system (LCBS). Given the limitations of individual cells, such as low terminal voltage, specific energy and power limitations, and low charge/discharge rates, an LCBS typically consists of thousands of individual cells connected in series and parallel configurations. Commonly, multiple cells are first combined into battery modules (BMs), which are then connected in series to form battery strings, and finally, multiple strings are connected in parallel to create the LCBS. The design of these systems often follows certain principles: the number of cells in each module should facilitate management and replacement, and the number of modules in a string is determined by the required voltage. The number of strings in the LCBS depends on the BESSā€™s capacity requirements, redundancy, and operating modes.
2. Power Conversion System
The PCS is a device composed of power electronic converters, connecting the battery system to the AC grid. It is a crucial component for energy exchange between the BESS and the external grid. The PCS's main functions include: charging and discharging the battery system in both grid-connected and islanded modes and switching between these modes; providing bi-directional control of active and reactive power to ensure system power balance; and implementing advanced features like black start, peak shaving, power smoothing, and low voltage ride-through. Depending on its topology (e.g., single-stage AC/DC, two-stage AC/DC+DC/DC, single-stage parallel, two-stage parallel, cascaded multilevel), the PCS can also manage battery voltage and state of charge (SoC) balance. As the most critical part of a BESS, the control strategy and implementation of the PCS are key research areas.
3. Battery Management System
The BMS is an electronic monitoring system that effectively oversees the various states of the battery system (voltage, current, temperature, SoC, state of health). It manages the charging and discharging processes to prevent overcharging and over-discharging, handles fault alarms and emergency protections, and optimizes system operation to ensure safe, reliable, and stable performance. Accurate SoC estimation of the battery system and its components is a crucial function of the BMS, essential for proper management and control.
4. Monitoring System
The monitoring system tracks, manages, and controls one or more modular BESS units. It is essential for real-time operation, providing valuable data for system optimization and fault management.

Typical Structures of BESS

BESS research and development are still in early stages, with no universally accepted mature system structure. The structure depends on the method of capacity expansion, which primarily includes two approaches:
1. Expanding Single PCS Capacity
This involves using high-voltage, high-current converters or cascaded multilevel technology to increase BESS capacity. While this approach has a simple system structure and potential for high-voltage, high-capacity systems, it is limited by current power electronics technology, investment costs, and control techniques, making it less common in large-scale applications.
2. Parallel Operation of Modular BESS Units
This approach uses multiple modular BESS units operating in parallel to increase capacity. Based on practical applications, typical structures include:
1ļ¼‰Low-Voltage Small-Capacity BESS
These systems consist of a single modular BESS connected to a 400V AC grid, with rated power usually below 500kW and discharge durations of 1-4 hours. They are suitable for microgrid primary power, residential or building storage, and small renewable energy grid integration.
2ļ¼‰Medium-Voltage Large-Capacity BESS
Multiple modular BESS units are paralleled and then connected to a 10kV or 35kV grid via step-up transformers. With rated power typically up to 10MW and discharge durations of 1-4 hours, these systems are used for power quality management, peak shaving, backup power, and renewable energy integration.
3ļ¼‰High-Voltage Ultra-Large-Capacity BESS
Multiple medium-voltage large-capacity BESS units are paralleled and then connected to a 35kV or 110kV grid via high-voltage transformers. These systems have rated power above 10MW and discharge durations of 15 minutes to 6 hours, suitable for peak shaving, grid frequency regulation, backup power, and renewable energy integration.
In summary, expanding BESS capacity essentially involves parallel operation of multiple modular BESS units, which offers advantages like linear scalability, plug-and-play capabilities, and easy maintenance. Modular BESS parallel operation is an effective method for achieving large-capacity BESS, facilitating distributed large-scale energy storage systems (D-BESS) and enhancing system reliability.

2024.05.20 03:39 howtohealhurt Questions about expirience

My primary care Dr suggested I look into Wegovy but I have some concerns. Over all I'm relatively healthy and very active. I have trouble loosing weight due to thyroid and auto inflammatory/auto immune conditions. My main concern is one of those conditions is a flare that impacts my digestion significantly. After working with a nutritionist for mths, I also do not eat enough day to day. I actually do not feel hunger and can go 8 to 10 hrs with out eating. I finally have gotten the digestive issues semi manageable but I'm not sure that Wegovy would help with weight loss given that I already don't eat what I need and am actively trying to eat more. Why would my Dr recommend it though?

2024.05.20 03:37 user997151086 Cutting Grass as an Activity on AMCAS

I plan to list grass cutting as one of my AMCAS activities, and I have a few questions about it:
  1. What would you recommend putting for "Experience Title" and "Experience Name?" Right now, I have "Other" and "Lawn Care Service," but I'm not sure if this is okay. I put Other because I got paid under the table.
  2. For the contact information, should I list myself, or should I list one of my grass cutting clients? Right now, I have one my clients. Again, not sure if this is okay. If I were to include myself as the contact person, for "Contact Title," can I literally just say "Myself?"
Any feedback is greatly appreciated! Hope everything is going smoothly with your primary application!

2024.05.20 03:35 CaptOle Gaijin Has a Poor Understanding of Statistics Pt 2 -- Proposed Solution

You may be familiar with my prior effort post describing the problem that Gaijin has in its analysis of statistics. You can find that post here for reference.
TL:DR for that post: Gaijinā€™s win rate-based balancing system creates a positive feedback loop for bad vehicles that generally pushes away bad players leaving only good players playing them, pushing them further up in BR. Same thing happens for especially good vehicles being played much more by worse players keeping the win rate suppressed, not because of the vehicle being bad but by a ā€œskill issueā€ for lack of a better term.
Anyways, many people brought up good points and a lot of wisdom and personal experience that got me thinking of solutions. I am a PhD student in economic policy, so statistics is a daily activity for me. I asked my colleagues to look over a proposal to see if it is statistically robust, and this is the consensus balancing algorithm that would be better than what Gaijin currently uses. I wonā€™t be explaining multi-linear regressions like I did statistical bias in the last post, but if you want a brief overview of what they are and how they work, please refer to these 2 videos:
Linear Regression (SLR)-- watch the first 7 or so minutes of this one
Multiple Linear Regression (MLR)-- this video is only 5 minutes so watch the full thing
Think of these videos as your daily brain nourishment for understanding statistics not just in War Thunder, but everywhere in the world.
When creating our MLR, we want to think of a model that answers a question about data that we have. In our case, we are going to be looking at causal inference. A popular example would be, what health factors of an individual would determine the risk of them having lung cancer. Relevant information for that regression would be a personā€™s age, history of smoking, diet, income, parent/family history, etc. By taking a massive dataset with all of this information, say of 10,000, we can fit a regression that estimates an individualā€™s chance of getting cancer by using data from an existing group. A sample model for lung cancer may look something like this:
Chance of getting Lung Cancer = B0 +B1X1+B2X2+B3X3+B4X4+B5X5
Where based on the dataset:
B0= Base Chance of cancer
B1= Effect of Smoking where X1 is a binary variable (0 or 1) whether a person has smoked regularly at any point of their life
B2= Effect of Family History where X2 is a binary variable (0 or 1) if a personā€™s family has a history of lung cancer
B3= Effect of Age where X3 is a personā€™s age in years
B4= Effect of Income where X4 is a personā€™s income
B5= Effect of Diet where X5 is a value of 0 to 100 of a personā€™s diet health, 0 being a perfect diet and 100 being horrible, ranked by an expert.
With this information, we can take any individual, person i, plug in their relevant data, and get the risk they individually would get lung cancer based on the body of data we used to create the regression. If we have an individual that is 60 years old, who has smoked, does not have a family history of cancer, has a pretty good diet (ranked 25/100), and has an income of $50,000.
We can get this personā€™s expected chance of getting lung cancer in the following equation:
B0 +B1(1)+B2(0)+B3(60)+B4(50,000)+B5(25).
Any Bx is what is known as the marginal change in expected outcome based on a 1 unit change of and Xx. Now, if we had actual values for Bx for every term, we would simply plug them in, and solve the equation given the individualā€™s recorded data. The outcome would give an expected chance of cancer for that individual. So, with that explanation out of the way, back to War Thunder.
To create an MLR model, we will have to identify what value we want to predict, and what kinds of data we will use to predict it. Since Gaijin uses win rate as their primary statistic for balancing, we will use that as the value we want to predict. To create a model that will be used as a baseline to compare all other subgroups to, we will assume we are using every single vehicleā€™s statistics for the past 6 months entered individually into a dataset to get a universal model for predicting win rate per game mode. This specific model will be for Ground RB. The value we are predicting is win rate, and the values we will be using to predict win rate are:
X1=K/D
X2=Point Captures
X3=Kill Assists
X4=Spotting Assists
X5=Shots absorbed and bounced
X6=Time per life
So a model would like like this:
Win Rate = B0 +B1X1+B2X2+B3X3+B4X4+B5X5+B6X6
With each of the Bā€™s being the marginal change in expected win rate based on a unit change in any of the associated Xā€™s.
Once we run the regression, we will get values for all the Bā€™s giving us the expected effect each of these statistics has on win rate. We donā€™t know what this data is, so we donā€™t know what is statistically significant or not to keep in the model, so any one of these statistics could be insignificant, or surprisingly significant. Only Gaijin knows.
So, what do we do when we have the general model for win rate? We can correct for the bias encountered in the previous post by just looking at win rate by creating a player skill-adjusted win rate. Hereā€™s what I mean:
What we will do is take the average of every accountā€™s player statistics for the relevant game mode, in this case, ground RB, and input those values as Xā€™s. This will output a skill-adjusted expected win rate. In other words, inputting the recent account statistical averages for the players playing a vehicle will output an expected skill-adjusted win rate for a vehicle. If a vehicle is below this expected skill-adjusted win rate, it should be a candidate to move down in BR, while if it is above, then it could be moved up in BR.
Imagine Russian premium 10.0 with the 2S38, TURMS, and T80UD. This is generally considered a very powerful lineup but played by generally worse-than-average players. In the current system, Gaijin will try to balance these vehicles to get to a 50% win rate regardless of the population that plays these vehicles, leaving them arguably under-tiered due to the skill level of the players. In the new system, all of the players who play these vehicles will have their past 6 months of player data averaged and plugged into the generalized win rate model to give an estimation of what that win rate SHOULD be based on the average skill level of the players. This could give us an expected win rate of 45% or maybe even 40%, but either way, it will probably be lower than the standard 50% that Gaijin balances their game around.
In cases with bad vehicles being played by particularly good players, they may still be seeing above a 50% win rate even though theyā€™re overtiered. By decreasing their battle rating, it may DECREASE their win rate due to the draw of worse players to these now lower BR vehicles. This should change the population composition of a vehicle and combat the feedback loop problems described in the previous post.
If Gaijin is ever brave enough to provide anonymized player statistics and vehicle statistics, we can see the populations that play each vehicle and balance them around the power of the vehicle, not the prowess of the player. This, in my opinion, is a much better system than the current ā€œbalance all win rates at 50%ā€.
If you have any questions or want further explanation, let me know and Iā€™d be happy to make an edit to this post to explain. I am also open to feedback on this rough model and method of balancing.
PS: The numbers in the models are supposed to be indexing and subscripted, which didn't paste over correctly from the word doc.

2024.05.20 03:20 PrincessDPRK Interested in North Korea?

I am the daughter of two defector parents who have always encouraged me to explore my heritage and the place that so easily could've been my homeland.
I've been to NK multiple times as a child, we have a close friend who is very high up working in Koryo Tours and I've even gotten to stay at the international children's camp in the DPRK for a long term visit as a child!
I run the sub NorthKorean , if you want to get a sense of the type of content I'll be posting to my YT channel, please take a look at my postings over on my sub.
my videos mainly consist of content from inside North Korea, either by North Koreans (meant to be seen by citizens of NK - such as propaganda), or hidden footage taken by citizens (not meant to be seen inside NK but leaked footage of the more rare sights and what people call "poorer regions" of the dprk- showing exactly what goes on in those regions, debunking many fictitious claims and rumors), cartoons created by the regime with English subtitles, cartoons from Disney that happen to have NK dubs, and so much more.
It's pretty fascinating witnessing what people inside this very closed off country that Americans are unfortunately not allowed to see with their own eyes (for obviouse reasons, but how shall we have any right to complain?). Things that citizens of the DPRK witness on television and in the media.
So come and join, subscribe and follow me on my new adventure into YouTube!
If you happen to have a YT channel of your own, or a sub that you moderate, I will absolutely sub4sub. We are definitely like minded here (I would anticipate) and I am so down to support y'all, in this world of bias and misinformation... Slander and propaganda.. we gotta have each others backs.
Mods, if this isn't allowed here I'm sorry and I'll delete if needed. But to any mods here that have free time and wanna mod another DPRK sub, NorthKorean is looking for active moderators! So just let me know... And I'd be more than happy to add you to my community šŸ„°

2024.05.20 02:56 ibmentor From barely passing to scoring 19/20 for English Paper 1! What you need to achieve your potential in IB English

Fuzzy expressions, articles that donā€™t make sense and obscure teachers šŸ„² . In the IB there isnt a more elusive subject to score a 7 in than among English (maybe Physics!). As a student I never scored above 14 on my papers and tbh I just never really took English lessons seriously (if* Iā€™ve spoken it all my life so I should be good right?)*. Iā€™m sure you can also relate that the subject also just felt really fluffy and to me; unlike sciences or maths with a detailed syllabus and clear way to progress.
Until one perspective shift transformed my English grades, allowing me to eventually score 19/20 in my final exams:
In Biology, you donā€™t get marks for describing the lungs as the ā€œbreathing organā€, you need to use the actual terminology ā€œlungsā€. Along with that, you also need to understand its function, how it relates to the rest of the body, etc.
This is how you progress in IB English, through an effective mastering of the Literary Devices. These are the incremental building blocks, the ammunition you use to attack whatever random unseen text they throw at you in the exam. Similar to studying the lungs in biology, you must learn to Recognise, Explain, Link and Draw implications of using different literary devices in different contexts. How does it reveal authorial choices, and why it is effective for that specific issue being conveyed? This extends to both the IO and Paper 2 aspects as well!
I promise that if you focus more on HOW a text is written (authorial choices) more than WHAT it is about (only the messages), you will see your writing improve dramatically from poor retelling essays to analytical and insightful arguments.
TLDR;
If you feel stuck or unable to progress in IB English, change your approach from just understanding the text for what it is into actually explaining WHY and HOW it is written, using the literary techniques as your building blocks for arguments.
P.S. If you'd like to know more in how I achieved these results in IB, message me for more info or visit my website ibmentors.com!

2024.05.20 02:52 Broke_UML_Student In search of a new HT

Iā€™ll take the mocking that my only HTs are baofeng UV5Rā€™s at the moment. Dropped one on the kitchen floor and broke the clips that hold the long battery in. Had to duct tape it. Then I was having a problem with the headphone jack.
While I have plenty of backup baofengs I realize I have an active lifestyle and I canā€™t trust these cheap Chinese radios to not break if I need them in the field. Theyā€™re good for home use, maybe a day pack but still. Any serious use and they break. So I need to find a new primary HT and need suggestions.
Ideal 5w or more. Emphasis on more but 5w is ok. Preferably under $150. Reasonably water resistant (I wonā€™t go swimming with it but I want to trust it in a downpour). Able to take a drop with ease. Think slips/falls if Iā€™m wearing it. Or maybe accidentally falling from the roof of a car.
VHF/UHF analog. Tri-band with 1.25m is a bonus. Looking for something that has a good size to it. Not large like the AR152 but similar to the size/feel of the baofeng DM1701 in terms of bulk. Programming by chirp preferred but if itā€™s a free separate software Iā€™m ok. No digital radios. No menu driven displays. Traditional freq/channel name program capable display. Could have two-pin external jack for all my headsets I have. Worst case I get an adapter.
I know this is kinda broad but I want to find out whatā€™s out there. Willing to go up to $200 for the perfect HT but ideally under $150. Probably unreasonable but idk whatā€™s out there. Suggestions are definitely welcome. Thanks!

2024.05.20 02:23 baskaaa188 i'm losing my mind

i just need to get this out of my chest.
i'm tired. it's been 4 months (i know for a lot of ur pain and experience it's nothing, but with my prognosis i feel like it's eternity) after my 2 AP attacks which were within 1 week back then and to add to that i had gastritis at the same time. everyday pain like pressure and stabbing, mainly in the morning and after eating, sometimes cramps, primary in pancreas and gallbladder area where i feel discomfort 24/7 btw from the day no.1 but my whole stomach is very sensitive now and i'm bloated all the time. Day to day i feel like imma trow up. extreme fatigue, my whole body hurts, muscles, joints and bones too. probably because i eat like 1000kcal and max 36g of fat a day, if i eat more pain is back in the town yay. hah and funny thing no gluten, no lactose, no to a looot of things for me, my body don't tolerate it very well. for example today i tried small banana, boom stabbing pain (not the pain like i'm about to die but still not pleasant AT ALL) so only fruit i have eaten is compote peach, it's my savior fr.
I found new GI specialist in private clinic, for europe countries it's a little bit pricey thing, she done another round of tests (thank god) and i'm waiting and waiting and i'm loosing my mind from it. So far i have diagnosis from other doctors for AP + reflux gastritis + lot of gall in gallblader + 2 small polyps in gallbladder and pancreas divisum. New GI told me that it surely can't be problematic divisum, she would go the way it is IBD or Sibo (which i understad, she needs to cover up "basics") and even tho she was professional and kind, i thing that she thinks it's in my head probably.. like my boyfriend, my family his family thinks too. my pain is real. i'm frustrated that i have to advocate for myself in this context.
on the other hand, except for my mental condition i have anxiety about other things. i'm still out of work. at this point i'm looking for something new, less stressful and physical, which ironically makes me more stressed now. probably because i'm going to new enviroment and collective but mainly it's because it'll be so hard financially. And also my career will go downhill. Also with my bf of 5 years we are considering to split up. we love eachother, but i feel like my health state wears him out and makes him depressed which i don't want at all, he would like to help me sonehow but he don't know what to do so it makes him feel desperate and also the financal state of things, we are renting a place together for 3 years, we were splitting bills and buying stuff together, we have a cat... what we'll do in future?! i do not know. my mental state is getting bad again after quite calm few years, but now i'm st my lowest maybe ever? idk. i don't even know if i should post this. i would probably rather scream this out loud but it's 2:18am here, so no good idea.
thanks for yout time it you made it here and maybe my whole point of this nonsence monolouge of post is that PANCREATITIS SUCKS! hope everyone well. that's all thanks.
sorry for my bad english, it's not my mother tounge.

2024.05.20 02:09 edv10c7 affects of climate change

The Impact of Climate Change: An Urgent Global Challenge

Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, posing significant risks to the environment, human health, and economic stability. Driven primarily by the increase in greenhouse gas emissions from human activities, climate change is causing global temperatures to rise, leading to a cascade of environmental effects. This essay explores the multifaceted impacts of climate change, examining its effects on the natural world, human societies, and the global economy, and emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive mitigation and adaptation strategies.

Environmental Impacts

The most evident impact of climate change is the alteration of weather patterns. Increased temperatures are contributing to more frequent and severe weather events, including hurricanes, heatwaves, droughts, and heavy rainfall. These changes disrupt ecosystems and biodiversity. For instance, coral reefs, which are highly sensitive to temperature changes, are experiencing widespread bleaching. This not only affects marine life that depends on coral reefs but also the millions of people who rely on them for food and tourism.
Additionally, the melting of polar ice caps and glaciers is a direct consequence of rising global temperatures. This contributes to sea-level rise, which threatens coastal communities and ecosystems. As ice masses shrink, habitats for polar species like the polar bear are diminishing, pushing these animals towards extinction. Furthermore, the thawing of permafrost in Arctic regions is releasing significant amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, exacerbating the cycle of global warming.

Human Health and Societal Impacts

Climate change has profound implications for human health. Increased temperatures and altered precipitation patterns affect the distribution of diseases. Vector-borne diseases, such as malaria and dengue fever, are spreading to new areas as mosquitoes expand their range. Additionally, heatwaves pose direct health risks, particularly to vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and those with preexisting health conditions.
Water scarcity is another critical issue exacerbated by climate change. Changes in precipitation patterns and the melting of glaciers, which serve as freshwater sources for many regions, are leading to reduced water availability. This impacts agriculture, leading to food insecurity and heightened competition for water resources. In regions like Sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia, where water scarcity is already a pressing concern, climate change threatens to exacerbate existing challenges, potentially leading to conflicts and large-scale displacement of people.

Economic Impacts

The economic repercussions of climate change are vast and varied. Agriculture, which is heavily dependent on stable weather patterns, is facing unprecedented challenges. Crop yields are becoming increasingly unpredictable due to extreme weather events, changing precipitation patterns, and the spread of pests and diseases. This threatens food security and livelihoods, particularly in regions where agriculture is a primary economic activity.
The insurance industry is also feeling the strain of climate change. The increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters are leading to higher claims and rising costs for insurers. This, in turn, affects premiums and the availability of insurance coverage, impacting individuals and businesses alike.
Moreover, climate change poses risks to infrastructure. Rising sea levels and extreme weather events threaten coastal infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and buildings. The cost of repairing and reinforcing infrastructure against these threats is substantial, straining public and private resources.

The Path Forward: Mitigation and Adaptation

Addressing the impacts of climate change requires a dual approach: mitigation and adaptation. Mitigation efforts focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions to limit the extent of climate change. This involves transitioning to renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency, and implementing policies that encourage sustainable practices. The Paris Agreement, an international treaty adopted in 2015, represents a significant step towards global cooperation in reducing emissions, although its implementation and targets need strengthening to meet the urgency of the crisis.
Adaptation strategies, on the other hand, involve adjusting our societies and economies to cope with the changes that are already underway. This includes building resilient infrastructure, developing early warning systems for extreme weather events, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Communities vulnerable to sea-level rise may need to consider managed retreats or the construction of barriers to protect against flooding.
Education and awareness are also crucial in combating climate change. By fostering a better understanding of climate science and its impacts, societies can make informed decisions and support policies that promote sustainability. Encouragingly, there is a growing global movement advocating for climate action, led by youth activists, scientists, and concerned citizens.

Conclusion

The impacts of climate change are pervasive and far-reaching, affecting the environment, human health, and the global economy. As the evidence of these impacts becomes increasingly clear, the need for urgent and coordinated action cannot be overstated. Through a combination of mitigation and adaptation strategies, supported by international cooperation and informed public engagement, it is possible to address the challenges posed by climate change. The future of our planet depends on the decisions we make today, underscoring the imperative for immediate and sustained action to safeguard the environment and ensure a livable world for future generations.

2024.05.20 02:07 SanderSo47 Directors at the Box Office: Clint Eastwood (Part 2)

Directors at the Box Office: Clint Eastwood (Part 2)
https://preview.redd.it/va70nf0l3h1d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=021d936ee0a724ca428d8559f5823592404d1822

As Reddit doesn't allow posts to exceed 40,000 characters, Eastwood's edition had to be split into two parts because his whole career cannot be ignored. The first part was posted yesterday.

Million Dollar Baby (2004)ĀØ

"Beyond his silence, there is a past. Beyond her dreams, there is a feeling. Beyond hope, there is a memory. Beyond their journey, there is a love."
His 25th film. Based on stories from the 2000 collection Rope Burns: Stories from the Corner by F.X. Toole, it stars Eastwood, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman. The film follows Margaret "Maggie" Fitzgerald, an underdog amateur boxer who is helped by an underappreciated boxing trainer to achieve her dream of becoming a professional.
Paul Haggis wrote the script on spec, and it took four years to sell it. The film was stuck in development hell for years before it was shot. Several studios rejected the project even when Eastwood signed on as actor and director. Even Warner Bros., Eastwood's longtime home base, would not agree to a $30 million budget. Eastwood persuaded Lakeshore Entertainment's Tom Rosenberg to put up half the budget (as well as handle foreign distribution), with Warner Bros. contributing the rest.
The film had an incredible run in limited release, breaking many records for Eastwood's career. It eventually earned a fantastic $216 million worldwide, becoming his highest grossing film ever. It received critical acclaim, and it was named as one of his greatest films. It won four Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (for Swank), and Best Supporting Actor (for Freeman). Eastwood became one of the very few directors to make two films to win both Best Picture and Best Director.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $100,492,203. ($166.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $216,763,646.

Flags of Our Fathers (2006)

"A single shot can end the war."
His 26th film. Based on the book written by James Bradley and Ron Powers, it stars Ryan Phillippe, Jesse Bradford, Adam Beach, John Benjamin Hickey, John Slattery, Paul Walker, Jamie Bell, Barry Pepper, Robert Patrick and Neal McDonough. The film follows the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima, the five Marines and one Navy corpsman who were involved in raising the flag on Iwo Jima, and the after effects of that event on their lives.
The film received positive reviews, but it bombed at the box office with just $65 million against its huge $90 million budget.
  • Budget: $90,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $33,602,376. ($52.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $65,900,249.

Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)

"The completion of the Iwo Jima saga."
His 27th film. Based on Picture Letters from Commander in Chief by Tadamichi Kuribayashi, it stars Ken Watanabe, Kazunari Ninomiya, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Ryō Kase and Shidō Nakamura. It's a companion film to Flags of Our Fathers, and portrays the Battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of the Japanese soldiers.
In the process of reading about the Japanese perspective of the war for Flags of Our Fathers, in particular General Tadamichi Kuribayashi, Eastwood decided to film a companion piece with this film, which was shot entirely in Japanese. The film was shot back-to-back, starting filming just one month after Flags of Our Fathers wrapped filming.
Despite being seen as the least accessible of both films, this film was much more successful at the box office than the previous film (including a colossal $42 million in Japan alone). It also received critical acclaim, particularly for how it handed the depiction of good and evil from both sides. It received 4 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.
  • Budget: $19,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $13,756,082. ($21.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $68,673,228.

Changeling (2008)

"To find her son, she did what no one else dared."
His 28th film. It stars Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich, and is based on real-life events, specifically the 1928 Wineville Chicken Coop murders in Mira Loma, California. It follows a woman united with a boy who she realizes is not her missing son. When she tries to demonstrate that to the police and city authorities, she is vilified as delusional, labeled as an unfit mother and confined to a psychiatric ward.
The film earned $113 million worldwide, barely breaking even at the box office. The film received mixed reviews, but Jolie received praise for her performance. She was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress.
  • Budget: $55,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $35,739,802. ($52 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $113,398,237.

Gran Torino (2008)

"Ever come across somebody you shouldn't have messed with?"
His 29th film. It stars Eastwood, and follows Walt Kowalski, a recently widowed Korean War veteran alienated from his family and angry at the world, whose young neighbor, Thao Vang Lor, is pressured by his cousin into stealing Walt's prized Ford Torino for his initiation into a gang. Walt thwarts the theft and subsequently develops a relationship with the boy and his family.
The film received great reviews, as well as praise from the Hmong community. It ended up becoming a sleeper hit, and it earned $270 million worldwide, becoming his highest grossing film.
  • Budget: $25,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $148,095,302. ($215.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $269,958,228.

Invictus (2009)

"His people needed a leader. He gave them a champion."
His 30th film. It stars Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. Following the aftermath of the apartheid, President Nelson Mandela decides to unite his people by supporting a rugby team in their bid to win the 1995 Rugby World Cup.
The film earned $122 million worldwide, barely breaking even. It received positive reviews, and Freeman and Damon received Oscar nominations for their performances.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $37,491,364. ($54.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $122,426,792.

Hereafter (2010)

"Touched by death. Changed by life."
His 31st film. It stars Matt Damon, CĆ©cile de France, Bryce Dallas Howard, Lyndsey Marshal, Jay Mohr and Thierry Neuvic. An American with a special connection to the afterlife, a woman with a near-death experience and a young English boy, who lost his loved ones, cross paths in an effort to find closure in their lives.
Despite mixed reviews, it managed to earn $107 million, turning a small profit.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $32,746,941. ($47 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $106,956,330.

J. Edgar (2011)

"The most powerful man in the world."
His 32nd film. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Josh Lucas, and Judi Dench, and follows the career of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, focusing on Hoover's life from the 1919 Palmer Raids onward.
The film received mixed reviews; while DiCaprio received praise, the technical aspects of the film were criticized. It earned $84 million, making it a box office success, but far below what DiCaprio usually makes at the box office.
  • Budget: $35,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $37,306,030. ($52 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $84,920,539.

Jersey Boys (2014)

"Everybody remembers it how they need to."
His 33rd film. Base on the 2004 jukebox musical, it stars John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, Michael Lomenda, Vincent Piazza and Christopher Walken, and tells the story of the musical group The Four Seasons.
It received mixed reviews, with praise for the musical numbers but criticism for the narrative and runtime, and failed at the box office.
  • Budget: $40,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $47,047,013. ($62.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $67,647,013.

American Sniper (2014)

"The most lethal sniper in U.S. history."
His 34th film. It is based on the memoir by Chris Kyle, Scott McEwen and Jim DeFelice, and stars Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller. The film follows the life of Kyle, who became the deadliest marksman in U.S. military history with 255 kills from four tours in the Iraq War, 160 of which were officially confirmed by the Department of Defense. While Kyle was celebrated for his military successes, his tours of duty took a heavy toll on his personal and family life.
In 2012, Cooper and Warner Bros. bought the rights to the memoir. Cooper wanted Chris Pratt to star as Kyle, but WB told him they would only greenlight the film if he stars in it. After Kyle's murder in 2013, Steven Spielberg signed to direct. Spielberg had read Kyle's book, though he desired to have a more psychological conflict present in the screenplay so an "enemy sniper" character could serve as the insurgent sharpshooter who was trying to track down and kill Kyle. Spielberg's ideas contributed to the development of a lengthy screenplay approaching 160 pages. Due to Warner Bros.' budget constraints, Spielberg felt he could not bring his vision of the story to the screen. So Eastwood was brought in to direct.
The film attained a solid, but not extraordinary response from critics. It also attracted some controversy over its portrayal of both the Iraq War and Kyle himself.
The box office though?
To say that the film had a fantastic run would be selling it short.
It opened on Christmas Day in 4 theaters, and it earned a huge $633,456 ($158,364 PTA). But the following weekend, it actually increased despite playing at the same amount of theaters, adding $676,909. That translated to a $169,227 PTA, becoming the highest second weekend PTA in history for a live-action film. And on its third weekend, it earned $579,518 ($144,879 PTA), becoming the first film to have three weekends above $100,000 PTA. In the 22 days it played in just 4 theaters, it earned $3,424,778.
On its first wide weekend, the film shook the industry by opening with a colossal $89 million. That was almost as much as the other 2014 blockbusters, and given that the film didn't have 3D pricing, it's very likely it sold far more tickets than them. It broke the January opening weekend record by twice as much, and the second biggest for an R-rated title. With insane word of mouth ("A+" on CinemaScore), this film had the legs. In less than one week, it became Eastwood's highest grossing film domestically. On its second weekend, it dropped just 28% and made $64 million, which was the biggest second weekend for an R-rated film (a record it still maintains) and crossed $200 million domestically. And by March, the film overtook The Hunger Games: Mockingjay ā€“ Part 1 ($334 million) as the highest grossing 2014 film in North America.
After an insane run in theaters, it closed with a gigantic $350 million domestically, which made it the second highest grossing R-rated film in North America. Overseas, it was also very strong, and it made a huge $547 million worldwide. It was easily Eastwood's highest grossing film, even adjusted for inflation. One of the greatest box office runs in recent memory. It received six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Cooper, ultimately winning one for Best Sound Editing.
The biggest surprise of the 2010s? Perhaps. Cause let's face it, when 2014, did any of you had this as the top film of the year? Or even in the Top 20? Please.
  • Budget: $59,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $350,159,020. ($463.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $547,659,020.

Sully (2016)

"The untold story behind the miracle on the Hudson."
His 35th film. Based on the autobiography Highest Duty by Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles, it stars Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney, Anna Gunn, Autumn Reeser, Holt McCallany, and Jamey Sheridan. The film follows Sullenberger's 2009 emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River, in which all 155 passengers and crew survived and the subsequent publicity and investigation.
The film received strong reviews, and earned over $240 million worldwide, becoming one of his highest grossing films.
  • Budget: $60,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $125,070,033. ($163.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $243,870,033.

The 15:17 to Paris (2018)

"The real heroes."
His 36th film. Based on the autobiography by Jeffrey E. Stern, Spencer Stone, Anthony Sadler, and Alek Skarlatos, it stars Stone, Sadler, and Skarlatos as themselves and follows the trio through life leading up to and including their stopping of the 2015 Thalys train attack.
Despite choosing Kyle Gallner, Jeremie Harris and Alexander Ludwig as the leads, Eastwood decided to cast the heroes to play themselves, which was met with confusion as they lacked acting experience. And that was reflected on the final film; it received negative reviews for its acting, and it bombed at the box office.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $36,276,286. ($45.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $57,176,286.

The Mule (2018)

"Nobody runs forever."
His 37th film. Based on the 2014 The New York Times article The Sinaloa Cartel's 90-Year-Old Drug Mule by Sam Dolnick, it stars Eastwood, Bradley Cooper, Laurence Fishburne, Michael PeƱa, Dianne Wiest, and Andy Garcƭa. Due to financial issues, horticulturist Earl Stone becomes a courier for a drug cartel. Slowly, he grows closer to his estranged family, but his illegal activities threaten much more than his life.
It received good reviews (although some questioned its story and tone), and earned over $173 million worldwide.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $103,804,407. ($129.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $174,804,407.

Richard Jewell (2019)

"The world will know his name and the truth."
His 38th film. The film stars Paul Walter Hauser, Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates, Jon Hamm, and Olivia Wilde. The film depicts the July 27 Centennial Olympic Park bombing and its aftermath, as security guard Richard Jewell finds a bomb during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, and alerts authorities to evacuate, only to later be wrongly accused of having placed the device himself.
The film received positive reviews, but several journalists criticized the critical portrayal of the reporter that first accused Jewell: Kathy Scruggs (specifically for trading sex for stories). The film marked another commercial failure for Eastwood.
  • Budget: $45,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $22,345,542. ($27.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $44,645,542.

Cry Macho (2021)

"A story of being lost and found."
His 39th film. Based on the novel by N. Richard Nash, it stars Eastwood and Dwight Yoakam. Set in 1979, it follows a former rodeo star hired to reunite a young boy in Mexico with his father in the United States.
Nash tried to get this film made all the way since 1970s, but no studio was willing to pick it up. He restructured his films as a novel, was successful and studios were now interested. There were a few candidates for the leading role; Robert Mitchum, Roy Scheider, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Eastwood himself. Arnie was willing to star in the film back in 2003, but put it on hold when he was elected Governor. He was set to star after leaving office, but the project was scrapped after his affair scandal was made known. In 2020, Eastwood signed to return.
The film received mixed reviews, particularly for its writing and acting. It was also a huge flop at the box office, and marked Eastwood's least attended film as leading man. David Zaslav criticized the studio's decision to finance the film. Warner executives allegedly said that although they knew the film was unlikely to turn a profit, they felt indebted to Eastwood for his decades-long relationship with the studio and his consistent ability to deliver films under budget and on time.
  • Budget: $33,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $10,310,734. ($11.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $16,510,734.

The Future

He recently wrapped post-production on his 40th film, Juror No. 2. It stars Nicholas Hoult, Toni Collette, Zoey Deutch, Leslie Bibb, Chris Messina, J. K. Simmons and Kiefer Sutherland, and follows a juror serving on a murder trial who realizes he may be at fault for the victim's death.

Across those 39 films, he has made $3,536,687,297 worldwide. That's $90,684,289 per film.

The Verdict

Insanely profitable.
Even the bombs do not taint this kind of reputation. Eastwood has made all these films under budget and never past its deadline. That's something that has to be treasured for studios, no wonder he's been staying with Warner Bros. since 1976. His ability to get films ready in short notice is impressive; Richard Jewell started filming in June and it was on theaters in December. One of the most impressive actors who transitioned into directors. You can tell that Sergio Leone and Don Siegel taught him well.
Now of course, his method of directing can also have its setbacks: he's often known for not asking for multiple takes and he skips rehearsals. So that means the performances of his actors aren't always the best they could've done. Which is why, despite making some masterpieces or fantastic films, he's also made a few films with weak technical aspects: poor lighting (J. Edgar), questionable logic (Cry Macho), obvious props (the fake baby in American Sniper), and some bad acting (Gran Torino and The 15:17 to Paris). At the same time, it's clear he can also get extraordinary performances through these methods; Gene Hackman, Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman won Oscars for starring in his films.
He also proved old age doesn't prevent you from continuing to work. He's turning 94 in a few weeks, and he's still directing films. Manoel de Oliveira directed films until he was 104, so perhaps we still have a few more years with Eastwood behind the camera.
P.S. Ever since I started this series, there's been suggestions that I should do "Actors at the Box Office" multiple times. While the idea is intriguing, that doesn't seem feasible for me. I'd have to categorize whether the actor is leading, supporting, original IP, adaptation, remakes, etc. Besides, with the continuing decline of star power, it's tough to decide what actor is truly moving the needle at the box office. That's why I'm making solely "Directors at the Box Office", because the director is responsible for the production. If the film succeeds, the director will get credit. And if the film flops, the director will be blamed. So this is the closest you'll get to "Actors at the Box Office".
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Robert Zemeckis. One of the biggest falls from grace.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. It had to be a controversial filmmaker. Well, we'll later talk about... Zack Snyder. Oh, BoxOffice chose fuego šŸ”„
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
May 20-26 Robert Zemeckis Can we get old Zemeckis back?
May 27-June 2 Richard Donner An influential figure of the 70s and 80s.
June 3-9 Ang Lee What happened to Lee?
June 10-16 Zack Snyder RIP Inbox.
Who should be next after Snyder? That's up to you.

2024.05.20 02:03 MBCiUS_FMD22 My bf of 2 year said he is not as excited to see me as before.

I (33F) dating (31M) for over two years now. We have up and downs during the whole relationship but we get through it. I am in a residency training which is an intense training and involves longs hours; usually 12 hours shift 6days/week. We only see each other once a week or sometime once every 2 weeks. Recently I am in night-shift rotation. Due to abrupt change in sleep schedule and work related stress, I got into a lot of arguments with my bf. Every week we have a tiny arguments here and there. Two days ago my bf told me that he is not as excited to see me as before. We have two arguments in one day the weekend before but we talked things out and solved immediately in the same day. But i sensed that he seems not happy around me these days so I called him, explained how I feel and pressed him so he finally admitted that he is not excited or looking forward the weekend we spend time together anymore. He said Weekends usually involves long hours drive nearly an hour or more drive from his place to mine, and going to groceries with me is not funs for him. He said itā€™s hard for him to concentrate and listen to my work related issues which he doesnā€™t care much about, but he let me vent because it helps me relieve stress. Also since English is not my primary language, I usually go through a long story about the issue which hard for him to concentrate to the point since he has ADHD. he said he understood the amount of stress i am going through, and he doesnā€™t want me to change anything but this is how he truly feels. He said he mean it when he told me he is happy to help me with groceries shopping which help me prepare for the whole week meal plan, but just not funs for him. He said he has to be very careful around me not to make me upset since Iā€™m under a lot of pressure and stress already. I asked him what do you think about our relationship, will this be working out between us? He said he thought about this before, the thought of not being with me make him upset and it will be very hard for him to not see me anymore. Thatā€™s why he wants to continue to keep trying. After a long conversation he said everything is fine, he think it is just a phase/time period that he feel excited to see a person vs not as much excited to see a person. But I canā€™t shake this feeling off my chest. I donā€™t know what to do or how to proceed with this relationship. Am I too much? Am I in wrong ? What should I do?

Conclusion

Still standing castles of Baku.
  1. Baku Fortress It was built in about 1138ā€“1139 on the order of the Shirvanshah Manuchohr III (1120ā€“1149)
2.The Round Mardakan Fortress or the Small Mardakan Castle( Perrsian: Ł‚Ł„Ų¹Ł‡ Ł…Ų±ŲÆŚ©Ų§Ł† Ś©ŁˆŚ†Ś©) The inscription (kitabe) on the castle's donjon says that it was built in 1232 by the architect Abdulmajid ibn Masud at the order of the Shirvanshah Fariburz III.
3.Keeper of the Fortress of Baku or Quadrangular Tower The tower was built in the 14th century and was an integral part of the fortress wall and the defensive fortifications in Baku.
4.Great Mardakan Castle or Quadrangular Mardakan Fortress The fortress was built in the shape of a quadrangle in the 12th century by Akhsitan I, the son of Shirvanshah Minuchihr III.
  1. Maiden Tower Some scientific sources indicate that the Maiden Tower is a paramount example of Zoroastrianism and the pre-Islamic architecture in Iran and Azerbaijan. Davud A.Akhundov provides archeological and architectural evidences and argues that the Tower is Zoroastrians' Fire temple-Tower which had 7 fire exits on the top of the tower. Zoroastrian believed that there are 7 Steps or 7 Sky to reach heaven.
Davud A.Akhundov and Hassan Hassanov date the fire temple-tower approximately as 8th-7th century B.C.
Points out the marked difference in the stone used in the tower compared to the stone used in the medieval city surrounding it. This conclusion is partly supported by historian Bretanitskiy who has postulated that the tower was partly built in the 5th to 6th centuries and then later in the 12th century. The site was believed to have been used originally during the Sasanid era as a Zoroastrian temple. An inscription located 14 metres high on the south wall which in old Kufic script mentions Qubbeye Masud ibn Davud or Kubey Mesud ibn Daā€™ud, an architect active during the 12th century; he is the father of the architect who built the Mardakan Round Tower. However it is disputed as the inscription, unlike the Mardakan Tower inscription, does not actually reveal him to have been the architect, although it is generally agreed that much of the modern tower dates back to the 12th century. Ahmadov believes that the tower was used as an astronomical observatory from the time of this reconstruction, due to the fact that 30 hewed stone protuberances on the tower's lower section and the 31 protuberances on the upper section, linked with a stone belt, correlate to the days of the month.
  1. Paired Fortress Gates or Gosha Gala Gapysy (also sometimes called Shamakhi gates) The old gate was built in the 12th century during the construction of the Baku fortress by order of Manuchehr III the Great, the new one - in the 17th century under Shah Abbas I by order of Zulfugar Khan.
7.Nardaran Fortress It was built in 1301 by architect Mahmud ibn Sa'd in the northern part of Absheron Peninsula. Nardaran Fortress is located 25 km north of Baku in the village of Nardaran near the town of Mashtaga. Shirvanshahs used the fortress for both observation and defense.
8.Ramana Tower The castle was possibly built under the order of the Shirvanshahs in the 14th century, perhaps for defensive purposes. Some researchers claim that the remaining structure was constructed during the Nizami period (12th century). Some historians have previously claimed the existence of underground passages connecting all the fortresses, generally leading to another castle, specifically the Baku castle, including the Maiden Tower.
9.Salyan Gates The Kempfers book describes that, in 1683, Icherisheher was surrounded by two fortress walls and had two city gates: Mountain (also called Gilan, Russian or Salyan) and Shamakhy (also called the Derbend Gates, the pair of fortress gates). Also, in the primary plan of the city of Baku, which was drawn up by the Russian army in 1723, two city gates were marked. The trade caravans arriving from Russia passed through the Shamakhy Gates and left through the Salyan Gates. The trade caravans arriving from Iran entered through the Salyan Gates and left through the Shamakhy Gates.
10.Shaghan Castle Itis one of the 12th - 13th century Absheron castles located in Shaghan settlement. As a result of a strong earthquake in 1841, most of the castle was destroyed. Currently, only one tower exists The fortress had a rectangular donjon, some of the ruins of which have survived to this day. The donjon consisted of three tiers; traces of machicolations were preserved on the donjon. According to the testimony of Sh. Fatullaev-Figarov, around the donjon there were also traces of fortress walls, which during his lifetime disappeared under new buildings
