2024.05.20 05:01 Gnome___Chomsky Israel is a settler-colonial state. This isn’t slander or exaggeration or hypocrisy, just a fact.

Israel is a settler-colonial state. It’s not a dirty word, exaggeration, or slander; just the truth.
Why do pro-Israel people refuse to admit that Israel is a settler-colonial state? Here are the facts:
Jews were 5% of the population of Palestine at the beginning of the 20th century. They’d been a minority in Palestine since around the time when the Roman empire converted to Christianity in 4th century CE. (This is besides the point, but this primarily occurred through the conversion of local jews, samaritans and pagans and pilgrimage/immigration of christians). They hovered at 1-5% of the population from the 16th to the start of the 20th century CE according to Ottoman census.
So yes, as many Zionists frequently bring up, there’s been a nearly continuous presence of Jews in Palestine since ancient times. However, that population was a small minority for most of recent history
So how was Israel founded if Jews were such a small minority in the region up until then? well, it was founded by a movement of primarily European Jews who immigrated en masse to Palestine over the prior 50 years with the explicit purpose of creating a state there for themselves which excludes the local Palestinians.
That is the textbook definition of settler colonialism. It is exactly what happened on the East Coast of the United States, for example, in the 17th century when protestants from England immigrated and founded colonies that excluded the indigenous people. Eventually those colonies conquered more of the land and established their own state.
Now, at this point, many Zionists will agree on the fact that America is a settler colonial state, and point out a supposed hypocrisy for opposing Israel merely based on that fact, especially if one lives in America or some other settler colonial state. Here, however, I’m not trying to argue whether settler colonialism is good or bad — I’m just aiming to establish that it is an accurate description of Israel, just as many would agree that it is accurate to describe the US as a settler colonial state. So if you agree that Israel is a settler colonial state like America then we’re on the same page.
Other Zionists try to argue that there was also immigration into Palestine from Egypt, Syria, and other Arab countries during the Ottoman period. However, what they fail to understand is that settler colonialism is not the same as immigration. That’s why there are different words for these concepts… examples of immigration include: a Polish worker moving to the UK with his family for work. Examples of settler colonialism include: the Dutch Boers settling South Africa with the goal of creating a permanent colony that excludes the local population. In short, immigration involves the movement of people between places for seeking better opportunities. Settler-colonialism, on the other hand, involves not only immigrating to a place but also enforcing a racial hierarchy and displacing the existing people in that place. Immigration is very natural and replete through the history of the world, especially within large empires, where people move to centers of greater wealth. Mostly, it is peaceful. Settler colonialism is more of a specific and recent phenomenon that started happening with European domination over the world since the late 16th century.
Another distinction to make is between imperialism and colonialism, which can be confusing. For example, we say that the Ottoman Empire controlled Palestine, but we don’t say that it colonized it. That is because colonization involves sending settlers into a territory and establishing a racial hierarchy there. The canonical example of colonialism is the form by which European empires expanded into the new world. The truth is no empire before Europe and the 15th century could’ve been colonialist. That is because no empire had such a large power differential whereby a small group of people from the Empire could completely dominate and control the regions they expand into. In reality, empires were fairly decentralized and no racial group could dominate and erase the others. Everyone who lived in the empire was a subject of the empire. Provinces far from the center usually maintain a degree of autonomy and have more of a vassal state relationship to the capital rather than being a colony. Local populations largely remain intact in empires.
Anyhow, all this is to explain what makes Israel a settler colony and what distinguishes settler colonies from other political structures.
This post is getting super long now, but one final point I want to acknowledge is the Zionist claim that Israel is not a settler-colony because it did not intend to displace or replace the local population by establishing its state. The expulsion that did occur was accidental, or the Palestinians own fault for rejecting partition in a land where they lived and were the majority. This is hard to argue against because it is straight up denial of history. It is not difficult to look up the founding texts of Zionism to see how the early Zionists unabashedly considered their project a colonial project and considered themselves colonizers. The Zionist organization, facilitating immigration into Palestine from Eastern Europe was literally called the Jewish Colonization Association. Jabotinsky, in “the Iron Wall”, argues that violently displacing the Palestinians is necessary for establishing a Jewish state. In light of all that, many Zionists claim that the actual violent displacement of Palestinians, which occurred in 1948, was somehow unintentional or just an accidental result of war with the Arab states, ignoring historically recorded facts like Plan Dalet and the numerous massacres and destruction of Palestinian villages. Also, had it been the case that the expulsion was accidental, there is no reaso why Israel should not allow those expelled to return besides that they do want them to be ethnically cleansed; it is a necessary part of the settler-colonial project.
There are a myriad other objections, which I don’t have time to thoroughly dispel. One is that Israel has no imperial home for it to be a colony. The short response is that’s not a condition for settler colonialism; for another such example, look at Liberia. Another argument, that Im seeing more and more frequently, tries to completely flip reality and tell us that akshully Ashkenazi Jews are the indigenous population and Palestinians are the colonizers. This is a very convoluted argument that needs its own post to refute all the things that are wrong with it. I will just say that we can acknowledge Ashkenazis and other diaspora Jews have ancestral connections to the land, but it does not make Zionism less of a settler colonial movement. Again, for an example, look at Liberia.
In summary, you may be a supporter of settler colonialism, you might just think it’s a neutral thing, or maybe even a good thing because it brings in wealth and capitalism and technology etc. Let’s just not deny that Zionism is a settler colonial movement and its result, the state of Israel, is a settler colonial state. This is just historical fact.

2024.05.20 05:00 Pitiful_Barracuda360 Yesterday I sang solo in front of people for the first time ever

Yesterday I went to a singing workshop/masterclass with a professional singing coach. The first half was just practicing different singing techniques and exercises, and the second half was the part where you sing the song you prepared in front of the other people and the singing coach, who plays the piano along to it. I sang the song "Cheer up Charlie". I was nervous at first before singing but while I was singing all that melted away and I felt at home singing it and especially as I really relate to this song, and its hopeful message. She was really impressed and I was really surprised she said I was a perfect singer and wasn't sure what we could work on, she asked me if I'd ever had any vocal training and I said no, and she seemed surprised at that and said somehow intuitively I did everything right and loved the delivery of my performance, and she suggested I apply for this singing competition where you can get £1000 to put towards a singing career. So I nearly cried happy tears at hearing this. I was surprised it went so well as I've never sang solo in front of anyone before and was afraid I'd muck up somehow or forget the words or that the piano accompaniment of the score would be wrong, etc but I'm so glad I did it. Being a singer is my dream job, because it's the only thing I'm very good at, and maybe I won't be a failure at life if I can pursue a music career, and if a professional singing coach thinks so then I should go for it right?
Because I'm such a meek and shy person in real life, and I speak so softly and quietly and in a tiny voice, but I feel like I can really only express myself through song, which is when I put all of my emotion and passion into what I am singing. Because of this, I think that everyone there was really surprised. I guess I just want to share this happiness, I never expected to get such positive feedback as I didn't ever consider myself a "perfect" singer. I've been singing since I was 19 as a hobby and I really enjoy it, but I didn't think I was that good that I could make a career of it, even though my family and friends have always been really supportive and encouraging about it and said that I could. But for a professional singing teacher to tell me that, I don't know. It makes me feel like I can actually do it.
By the way I went with my neighbor who is a really nice lady (we go to a choir together which is why she suggested this), and if it weren't for her I would have never even known about it or joined the choir. Because of this and her help, I feel like I could really be a singer.

2024.05.20 04:56 rec_life Should I Follow The Law?

I understand the general consensus when it comes to The Law, but please hear my testimony before you place judgment. (Proverbs 18:13)
First and foremost, all praise to The Most High. And bless His Son, Yeshua our Messiah. May your Ruach (Spirit) guide those who are seeking.
I have some verses I would like everyone to test. So, please bump this post so that everyone can test what it is I’m about to reveal. (1 Thessalonians 5:21)
So, as I stated at the beginning, I do understand that the consensus is, “we are no longer under the Law, but under grace.”
However, I came across a study about keeping the Law. And that the Law isn’t just this idea of “legalism” of “works” to earn one’s way into the Kingdom.
Now, come and see.
The first thing I wanted to reveal is that the Law is love. Please let me say this again, the Law, I like to use the Hebrew word Torah, is love. The idea of love is not just a set of emotions defined by some Greek scholars. But that the idea of love is what the Word says love is.
(John 14:15)
“If you love me, keep my Commandments.”
Now, I know this may seem self evident with what I am saying, and I really do think this is the case. But, I also know that the general teaching is that Yeshua gave new Laws. But please allow me to open those verses next.
(Matthew 22:37-40)
37 And he said to him, "You shall love the Yahovah your Elohim with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend the whole Torah and the Prophets."
Look closely at verse 40. As one can clearly see, by keeping the whole Torah and the teachings of the Prophets, you are loving both The Most High and neighbor. Now, I implore you, read this passage again with the understanding of verse 40. And then reread (John 14:15)
Ok, if you remember what I mentioned earlier, I said that keeping Torah isn’t just this act of legalism. And I gave a beautiful example of how keeping Torah is how Abba wants us to love. But now I will show you that keeping Torah grants us righteousness.
(Deuteronomy 4:8)
"And what other great nation has righteous statutes and rules as just as this whole Torah, which I am setting before you today?"
Key phrase “righteous statutes”. As I said, Torah is righteousness. Which is why Christians say, “Yeshua is the only one who fulfilled the Law perfectly.”
But what happens when someone else walks in Torah perfectly?
(Luke 1:6)
"In the sight of Elohim, Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous; they were blameless in observing all Yahovah’s commandments and regulations."
Righteousness is also perfection. Even Yeshua Himself tells us to be perfect.
(Matthew 5:48)
"Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."
It is only then, will Yeshua’s blood cover our sins. Meaning, after accepting Yeshua as our Messiah, we walk in Torah as Yeshua walks in Torah, out of love and righteousness.
But, if you say you are not under the Law, or under Torah, then how does love make sense according to The Most High? (John 14:15)
But there is a flip side as well, and that’s not walking in the Law. And that is called sin.
Again, just as we aren’t the ones that say what love is, Abba is the one who says what love is. And the same goes for sin. It’s what He says is sin, not what we say is sin. So, what does the Bible say is sin?
(1 John 3:4)
"Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices Lawlessness; sin is Lawlessness."
(Matthew 7:21-23)
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.'"
Please read (Matthew 7:21-23) very carefully. This passage is talking about those who have passed away from this world and are now seeing Yeshua. Please notice how they call Yeshua “Lord”. This means these people claim to be followers of Yeshua. But notice what Yeshua tells them at the end of the passage. “Depart from me, you workers of Lawlessness.”
Question, what group of followers does Yeshua have that say, “we are no longer under the Law, but under grace”?
So, unless we walk in righteousness and become perfect as Abba is perfect, only then will Yeshua’s blood cover our sin.
Question, when does Yeshua’s blood cover our sin?
People think His blood covers our sin before we die. But look at the evidence I just showed you with Yeshua’s own words. But now, allow me to show you again, His own words talking about when His blood will take effect.
(Matthew 26:28-29)
"In the same way, after supper he took the cup saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. But I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.'"
As you can see, Yeshua says His blood, the new covenant, will not take effect until when? Verse 40, “until on that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom.
So as stated above, we must walk in love and righteousness before we present ourselves before Yeshua. And after that, will His blood cover our sin in the Kingdom.
Here is a bonus prophecy by Jeremiah talking about the new covenant in the Kingdom.
(Jeremiah 31:33-34)
"‘I will put my Law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their Elohim, and they shall be my people. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know Yahovah,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares Yahovah. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.'"
I pray this teaching on Torah, or the Law, helps you with your walk with Yeshua.

The interlopers
interlopers' glances seems to be another dig at antis & fans alike as well as the media. Perhaps even those closer to them as a couple & individuals... really heartbreaking. At 1st listen I thought of this song as perhaps a joe one bc interlopers I thought were other people that tempted them but no. So so wrong that's not even the definition of the word ! I also definitely saw tears during this performance, & despite it being a truly a great song I think the story behind it is much more sad

2024.05.20 04:53 hscott2016 Potty training at daycare? Speech delayed child

Hey all—
My daughter will be 3 in July. We have been introducing her to the potty for a few months now and really started honing in on it this weekend. She knows what a potty is but is struggling to tell us that she needs to go.
If she has gone in a diaper, she will pull at it and sometimes get us a diaper indicating she needs to be changed.
We’re planning to keep working at this over the longer Memorial Day weekend coming up but I’m not sure how to work daycare into this-
We’ve talked to the teachers before and they said they won’t take them unless the child can tell them they have to go. I’ve also witnessed multiple times they let kids go from their room to the bathroom (right next door and small lobby) on their own and the kids get no assistance. I’m worried my kid wouldn’t be able to be able to go, wipe herself, pull her pants up, and wash her hands without some adult guidance.
She is speech delayed and we have her in speech therapy. She’s good at labeling things, knows her numbers, colors, sings multiple songs, and does a few 2 word phrases like “help me”. She’s come leaps and bounds from where she was, although I know she’s still behind.
A developmental therapist also comes to the school once a week to see her and help them try to integrate her in the class more.
Any advice on approaching potty training with this daycare (or for us in general) would be so appreciated! The director is terrible and probably won’t be much help. The teachers are good, but seem to be overwhelmed at times.
She can move to the preschool class when she’s 3, but she has to be fully potty trained to do so. We’ve also been looking into switching daycares, but since she will be 3 soon, most in my area are requiring her to be potty trained.

2024.05.20 04:50 TimeToSeattleDown I have been behind on virtually everything and I'm afraid I'm going to drop the ball in a big way

There are some major items I have signed up for and I am either failing, delaying or bailing on everything I am involved in. As of now I am simply laying in bed and feel damn near paralyzed. I can get up right now but will get back to bed soon if I do so I am sure.
I need to finish nearly a dozen things at work, have about 4-5 major academic commitments, and need to plan some other things for next month, and I really don't want to skip on any of them. I have been trying to schedule appointments with my therapist but i schedule them way too early and sleep through them. The other day I stayed up overnight for a work call and ended up sleeping through it, it was so embarrassing. I don't know what is wrong with me when making friends and either ghosting or going to the opposite end, why cannot I do any single fucking thing in moderation.
I know my sessions with my therapist are just about up so there is Soon going to be nobody to talk to about this madness, and I feel bad for wasting his time because I slept through so many of his sessions. I first thought it was just the weather but it is sunnier outside and I am still doing this shit. I want to apologize to everyone I worked with, anyone I studied with, and anyone I tried to befriend, but I know it's too late for anyone to put up with this shit. I have a major exam coming up, and a performance review. I know I will bomb these hard. Things were not supposed to go this way.

I am so done with poshmark
I had a case opened against me because allegedly there were stains on a sweatshirt I sold. I carefully inspected the sweatshirt prior to shipment and reviewed the listing photos and there were no stains. The buyer even stated that there wasn’t any stains in the listing photos. I kindly responded to the case with listing photos, pre-shipment photos, and my descriptions.
Guess how poshmark decided in favor of? I have been an occasional seller for 6+ years with over 500 sold items. Lately I have been noticing more buyer cases being approved without substantial evidence. What can I do from here?

2024.05.20 04:45 watchstarsgoout7 Best option under $2500?

I'm in dire need of an update, but struggling on where to put my dollars. I do a lot of video editing and media work, usually straightforward tasks but it wouldn't be uncommon to be running Premier, After Effects, and Lightroom or Photoshop all at the same time, while also having a bunch of browser tabs and Word documents open.
So I'm trying to find the balance between processing power, RAM, and SSD with a budget of about $2500. I'm ok with the 14-inch to put more of my budget toward performance. The 1TB SSD would be nice to have, but if I'd be suffering by going with the 18GB of RAM over the 36GB, I could live with the 500GB SSD. Then there's the incremental upgrades to the CPU/GPU that seem a little tough to gauge how necessary they are.
Where would you put the money?

2024.05.20 04:43 Genghgis_cant Advice on charging manufacturers for advertising space...

Hey guys,
So I'm creating a b2b subscription based app within the trade industry. The startup is a few months from soft launch and I have an idea to be able to make a bit of money back my investment by charging advertising space to the product manufacturer.
There are a few steps within the app in order to get to the digital quote stage in which the customer will be able to e-sign.
I cannot divulge too much into it at this stage but the industry only uses one product. This product has many different types and there are 5-10 manufacturers of the product.
At this stage, the quote only mentions the product type used for the job and its manufacturers name.
I am looking to go a little further here and add a few more things to the quote at a cost to the manufacturer in exchange for exposure/advertising.
  1. Brief description of the product type
  2. Manufacturers logo
  3. Manufacturers website (hyperlink)
Hypothetical figures:
Let's go with 2 quotes per day for this equation and drop the potential subscribing companies down to 1,000:
260 working days per year x 2 quotes = 520 quotes per year, per company.
520 quotes x 1,000 subscribing companies = 520,000 quotes per year
520,000 divided by 6 (number of manufacturers) = 86,666 ad exposures per year, per manufacturer.
I hope my working was correct here, please let me know if not. Also, some manufacturers may be more popular than others based on personal preference or product performance.
I think a manufacturer would be interested at the opportunity to advertise even half of this amount at 43K times per year.
What do you think about this idea? Can it generate some income? If so, how would you go about charging for this? Per annum? Per quote?
Thanks so much guys,

2024.05.20 04:39 makko007 Men talk substantially more than women

I’m a student journalist. I’ve interned for papers and magazines, which naturally requires me to interview a lot of different people.
95% of the time I interview a man, he will ramble and boast about himself for each question. Most of the time, the “answer” isn’t relevant to what I asked and he will talk over me if I attempt to steer the topic back.
I appreciate each person who volunteers their time to help me with a story; however, I’ve had to scrap countless interviews with men that focused the conversation entirely on themselves and (I promise I’m not exaggerating) their life stories. No matter how I phrase a question or how many I ask, they’ll talk endlessly about topics irrelevant to the discussion.
Outside of what I do for my major and work, I have this problem in public social settings too. It’s common for me to get stuck in a conversation with a man (strangers and acquaintances) who will talk forever whether I contribute to the discussion or not. People tell me to “just cut them off and politely end the conversation” and I agree, but that’s kind of hard when many men will speak over you or talk so extensively without pause that you can’t get a word in.
In my experience, this so rarely happens to me with women. They’re usually good at reading if you’re in a talking mood or not and dial down when they notice you stop contributing interest to the conversation.
Anyway, to wrap this up, I’m not writing this as a “gotcha” post to men. I don’t hate men; I think a lot of them mean well, and many are pretty cool. I just find it ironic how women are stereotyped to ramble a lot when my experience is the complete opposite. And while most of my friends are women, my closest friend is a man, and he’s told me that he struggles with this problem as well.

2024.05.20 04:33 x100139 A Crossout Fan-fiction The Ravaging, Chapter 1: Signs of Danger

Alright! Look, listen…this here story is somethin’ I’m not too keen on sharin’, mainly because I ain’t got too much to say about it all but, also, because it’s more a flashback of something from my ravaged brain. Due to it being from my ravaged brain, I ain’t to certain it’s a real memory or something implanted to make me a more sympathetic type person. Either way, if you ask me to explain who I am, it might start like this: A long, long time ago…
18 years ago…
The icy clash of shattered glass mixed with the shrill scream of twisting metal as the crushing weight of the cylinder bared down on the old car. First, its hood crunched down to pop the headlights, and to make the fenders press and slice into the tires, tires already flattened by time and now made completely useless. Then the windshield crackled and the cabin crumpled. One rear tire still inflated suddenly deflated as the load of weight popped the sidewall to release a long, loud hiss. The rest of the car’s windows were missing already and, as the conveyor fed the last of the junkheap in the crusher, Alex looked on in satisfaction.
“Didn’t think we’d get that pile finished before sundown!” Alex said as he reached up to pull off his hat and wipe sweat from his brow. As he let his foot off from one actuator on the ground and, also, he let go of a large handle that sprung back into place. As he did so, the large crusher came to a slow grinding stop. When the glass settled and all was quiet, he pulled off his gloves and breathed a sigh of relief.
“You want me to get the truck?” Little Alex, his young daughter asked, her high voice came from behind to surprise her father.
He turned around with a jump. “What in the?!” He was startled, not just by his little girl, but by the fact that she was in the wrecking yard at all. “Who let you back you here?” he looked around before looking to his girl. “You know you’re not supposed be back here, LA.”
The little long-haired brunette did not shy away as she used her thumb to point over her shoulder, back at the door. “Mom said I’m big enough to be back here,” she smirked.
“Listen…” he knelt down to her, eye to eye and placed his hands gently on her shoulders. “Where the truck is at…” he nodded in that direction, over her shoulder, but was careful to keep eye contact. “And…out around the side-yard with Butch and Cassidy…yes…you’re big enough to be back there. But, look,” he pointed to a sign that said ‘Hardhat Area.’ “Signs like that are important and you need to pay attention to things like them.” He stood and took off his hard hat and looked at it as he continued. “LA, when your mom or I say the phrase ‘back there…’ well, it’s what we say when we go behind the office…it makes things easy for the customers to understand. But, you’re old enough to know the difference now, so, let me show you something.” He took the hardhat and placed it on little Alex’s little head. “First thing’s first: you’re gonna’ need one of these.”
“Are we going to get the truck?”
“Not just yet. You need to learn about the signs of danger back here.”
Only a few minutes had passed before the two found themselves standing at the back door entrance to the office. LA could hear her mom faintly talking with a customer up front, and started to reach for the doorknob, but Alex spoke up to say, “Hey, take a look at this.” LA stopped and turned to look. There, covered in years of grime and smudged with all manner of grease and oil, an assortment of signs had been nailed to the wall, adjacent to the threshold. “Have you ever noticed these before?” he looked to LA as she scanned the signs and slowly nodded. “Have you figured out what they mean?” Again, he watched her slowly nod. “Okay…” he raised his head in curiosity and pointed to a Hardhat sign, one that resembled what he had pointed out earlier near the crusher. It did not have any of the wording, it only had a little black figure of a man with a bright yellow hardhat, all surrounded by a thick bright-red circle. It did not click with LA, and Alex could see that. “Here, let me give you a hint.” He reached out and took the hardhat from her head and put in on his own, making sure to take a step sideways, just right enough to be in the same view of the sign so that LA could visually compare them.
She gasped with realization and a smile. “You need a hard hat!”
“That’s right!” Alex said excitedly as he bent down, grabbed her by the waist and hoisted her up into his arms. Even being nine, LA felt as light as a leaf in Alex’s muscled arms and, with one arm, he held her close as she wrapped her legs around his waist. He was about to point to the sign about needing to wear gloves in the back but, just then, he caught the scent of something unwelcome and, with his free hand he pointed to another sign. “What’s this one mean?” He asked as he scanned the area.
LA looked at it with concentration on her face.
The sign had what she knew to be a cigarette on it with a huge red circle that crossed through the cigarette. She crooked her head in slight recognition and pointed at it, “I’ve seen that at the diner, but…”
Alex found what he was looking for, and, with a smile and raised brow, he nodded. “That’s right. Do you know what it means though?” Trying not to break LA’s focus, Alex wiggled off the glove of his free hand and began snapping his fingers towards Jim, a man standing towards the back of the room.
As Jim looked up, a cigarette dangling from his lips, Alex’s face became stern as he discreetly motioned about the cigarette.
LA thought about it and, finally, shook her head to make her pony tail lightly whip and tickle against Alex’s neck, bringing his attention back. “What’s it means, dad?”
“It means No Smoking,” he said just loud enough for Jim to hear, looking at him one more time. “Cigarettes are bad for many reasons but, back here, they can set things on fire.” He watched as Jim, dejected, snuffed out the little fire-starter. He looked back to LA, then, the sign and pointed out a couple more items. “There’s lots of things back here that can hurt you. Corrosive stuff. Electrical things…you remember what happened in Robocop 2, when Murphy grabbed that electrical box?”
LA’s eyes went wide. “His name was Alex, too!”
Alex let loose a roaring laugh. “Yes! But you’re missing my point…remember how he got fried?”
LA nodded with her eyes growing even wider.
“Well…I don’t want THIS Alex fried!” He bopped her on the nose with his index finger. “You understand?”
With a giggle and a smile, LA gave a short little nod.
Hoping she understood, Alex turned to make sure Jim had really put his cig out but found no sign of the man. He set LA down, turned and opened the door and, in an instant, he saw the orange flick of firelight flash up. Not wanting to hurt LA, but it was all he could think to do in such a short time, he kicked her in the butt to send her sailing up the hall.
LA tumbled to the floor as thunder and orange light slammed the door closed behind her, throwing off the Employees Only sign that skipped across the floor to a stop at LA’s feet.
Present day…
When I woke up, the Crossout was well underway but enough about me, that’s a story for another time…right now, we need to get to the real story of things.
It all started when…

Unknown 關於未知的我們, aTaiwanese Series: Discovering Family and Love Through Self-Sacrifice — (Part 1)
Over the last few weeks, I have been watching the Taiwanese series "Unknown," https://youtu.be/Q272pIOu3co, based on Priest’s famous work, "Big Brother." Throughout its twelve episodes, this series has captivated my attention, challenged my viewpoints, encouraged me to reevaluate some deeply-held beliefs, and left me eagerly hoping for a second season that delves further into the saga of Zhiyuan and Qian. However, I am also grateful for the opportunity to experience even a single season of this thought-provoking series.
"Unknown," features Chris Chiu as the main character Wei Qian, telling the story of a young man who, at the age of 14–16, resorts to working for a gangster. Driven by the death of his abusive, drug-addicted mother and a desire to support his sister, Qian accepts various jobs including cleaning toilets and billiard equipment, eventually working his way up to become a bouncer at the hall.
During the first episode, Qian’s altruistic nature expands beyond his immediate family when he encounters a homeless boy a few years younger than him. Moved by the boy’s plight, Qian takes him in, names him Zhiyuan, and gives him his last name, Wei.
At a live fan meet for the show, actor Kurt Huang, who portrays Zhiyuan, mentions an ongoing debate on social media regarding who is the “better” character in the series: Zhiyuan or Qian. Displaying humility and admiration for his co-star, Yuan encourages fans to pick Chris Chiu’s portrayal of Qian, acknowledging Chiu’s remarkable performance and personal difficulties he has faced.
This moment during the fan meet serves as a testament to the genuine nature and selflessness that is so characteristic of Taiwanese people and their culture. Although it is true that exceptions exist, the willingness of Taiwanese people to help friends and even strangers, often at their own expense, is a quality that continues to astonish and inspire me.
Chris Chiu and Kurt Huang share a long-standing friendship that dates back to their childhood. Despite a seven-year age gap, which is often significant in Asian cultures, the two actors have maintained a strong bond, spending time together as kids and frequently gaming at each other’s houses.
Reflecting on their unique relationship, Chris has mentioned that he does not perceive any sense of seniority over Kurt, despite the age difference. Instead, he values their friendship and regards Kurt as an equal, highlighting the genuine connection and mutual respect that has developed between them over the years as well as just the hilarious antics they can get into.
Age gaps in friendships often fade into insignificance when shared interests, experiences, and mutual understanding take center stage. A prime example of this is my friendship with Mr. R., who, despite being a decade younger than me, has become one of my closest friends. The age difference rarely comes into focus, except for the occasional moment of lighthearted teasing when Mr. R. laments his advancing age. In these instances, I jokingly remind him that I will be sure to bring up his concerns in ten years’ time, when he will have a different perspective on the matter.
The friendships between Chris Chiu and Kurt Huang and myself and Mr. R. serve as a testament to the power of friendship to bridge gaps in age and of the potential for enduring bonds to form based on common ground.
Returning to "Unknown," it’s evident that this series subverts the conventional notion of a “better man,” presenting instead a balanced narrative that showcases the strengths and qualities of both Qian and Zhiyuan. In this context, the question of who is the better character becomes redundant, as each individual brings their own unique set of attributes that make them indispensable to the story and to the people they cherish.
The multifaceted nature of the characters in "Unknown" contributes to the series’ appeal, as it challenges viewers to appreciate the diverse qualities that make each character “best” in their own right. This refreshing approach to character development encourages a deeper understanding of the complexities that make up human relationships and the ways in which individuals can complement one another.
Despite the flaws and setbacks faced by Qian and Zhiyuan in Unknown, their characters remain endearing and worthy of admiration. While confusion, misunderstanding, and passion occasionally lead them astray, their enduring care and love for each other, their family, — their unwavering commitment to those they hold dear, even in the face of adversity, resonates deeply with viewers and embodies the spirit of the One Republic song “Nobody.” As such, it becomes difficult not to root for both characters and to acknowledge their efforts with an internal standing ovation.
As the first episode of "Unknown" progresses, Qian’s dedication to his family and friends is further demonstrated as he takes on multiple responsibilities. In addition to caring for his sister and Zhiyuan, whom he considers as a brother, Qian becomes a professional gamer to supplement his income with livestreams.
The turning point in the first episode of "Unknown" arrives when Qian decides to break free from the gang’s control, but his attempt to leave is met with resistance. Hu, a member of the gang, retaliates by kidnapping Zhiyuan. This then forces Qian to participate in three critical matches as a means to secure Zhiyuan’s release.
The high stakes of these matches take a toll on Qian’s physical well-being, as he sustains a punctured lung and a head injury. The consequences of these injuries are severe, leaving Qian with a blood clot on his optic nerves and debilitating migraines. This intense and emotionally charged sequence of events showcases Qian’s unwavering determination to protect his loved ones, even at great personal cost.
In a touching display of brotherly devotion and sacrifice, Qian manages to win the matches despite his injuries, securing Zhiyuan’s freedom. Overwhelmed with emotion, the 11-year-old Zhiyuan breaks down in tears, expressing his belief that Qian should have prioritized his own safety.
Qian, however, reassures Zhiyuan that leaving him behind was never an option, emphasizing that without Zhiyuan, he has nothing. Qian’s heartfelt admission, declaring that without Zhiyuan and his sister Lily, he would have nothing in this world, reveals the depth of his love and commitment to his family.
With the support of his friend Sang Pang, whose parents offer him affordable housing, Qian also joins a startup gaming company and finishes a four-year college degree in three years. Alongside Sang Pang, Qian works with Xiong, an individual whose life experiences have shaped him into a resilient and driven person. After facing the adversity of his wife leaving him, Xiong sought refuge in a monastery but was encouraged by the monks to reintegrate into society. The diverse backgrounds and journeys of these characters, brought together by their shared passion for gaming, add depth and richness to the narrative of Unknown.
The poignant mantras uttered by Qian and Zhiyuan in the first episode of “Unknown” encapsulate the essence of their individual journeys and the heart of the series itself. Qian’s powerful statement, “Stay alive. . . live on. . . so you can find your home,” highlights his unwavering determination to create a better life for his family, even in the face of adversity.
Zhiyuan’s words, “In the end, life comes down to just a few things. . . where you come from, where you linger, what you want, and what’s left,” resonate with a deep understanding of the complexities of life and the importance of staying true to oneself and one’s loved ones.
"Unknown" explores the ways in which Qian and Zhiyuan navigate these mantras, grappling with the notion that sometimes, prioritizing the safety and well-being of one’s family may require the willingness to lose or give up personal ambitions. The characters’ growth and resilience in the face of these challenges ultimately culminate in their ability to overcome obstacles and emerge victorious, all while protecting the people they hold most dear and gaining what they most want/need in their lives, one another.
This series has had a profound emotional impact on me, offering a powerful exploration of themes such as love, family, and self-discovery. Its ability to connect with viewers on a personal level is a testament to the depth and authenticity of its storytelling.
This intense emotional engagement has been both cathartic and demanding, requiring introspection and self-reflection to fully appreciate the complex themes that Unknown presents. The delay in writing this series of posts is a result of this necessary process, allowing me to fully absorb and understand the impact of the show on a personal level.
"Unknown" has provided me with a newfound understanding and appreciation for the complexities of interpersonal connections and the transformative power of love and resilience. I am forever grateful to the creators for crafting such a powerful story that has not only captivated my attention; but also, aided in my personal growth and emotional healing.
