2024.05.20 03:57 shibesanon I honestly just need help with this.

Hello Reddit!
I recently put in my two weeks at my current job (I was accepted into a better paying job with a higher salary and shorter commute. Which were my biggest factors into accepting it. However my other factor as to why I accepted it was because of a coworker who recently started working at my job.
Let’s call her Cina.
Cina is an older woman, in her mid fifties early sixties who I was asked by my bosses to help train. Because I know a great deal about the department and the store in general. Which, at my current job I’ve helped train almost everyone. And according to everyone I’m very nice and helpful!
All except for this woman, Cina. In fact she has… been very… mean.
When I tried training her, she called me mean and a bully. Even though a lot of the time I was just asking her to complete smaller tasks. Especially when we had longer lines. And she was just standing there awkwardly because the two registers were full. And the third one she refused to learn. Which I get it. It’s a new system. Even tho both I and another coworker offered to train her. She didn’t want to do it.
She has also mocked the way that I talk and during an interaction with a customer grabbed me by the arm- shaking me and said ‘I’m going on my fifteen, IM GOING ON MY FIFTEEN. Okay?’ Very aggressively. J Another time recently I was performing duties outside of my job description because we were heavily short staffed and had been trying to see if each department had gotten there brakes. And if they hadn’t- I would have happily covered. And both times she told me that she was fine. However another coworker later told me that she, quote ‘Hated/Couldnt stand me. And that she was happy ‘that fat bitch’ is leaving in two weeks. And that she hopes I get fired. And that ‘if I piss her off again that she’ll get me walked out.’ (Meaning fired)
What’s driving me insane is that the only thing I can think of that might have pissed her off is this:
-When I first started trying to train her, at one point she disappeared for a very long time and another person I was training (a superior actually) asked where Cina was and went to speak with another higher up. All I had said at the time was ‘I dunno’ but I am fairly used to being left on my own for long periods of time.
She then became very aggressive when she came back ‘explaining herself’ however I had no involvement with the situation. She later told another coworker that she ‘put me in my place’
-I did however complain to management later that day when she began making fun of my voice and the way that I spoke. Because that genuinely hurt my feelings seeing as how I did. For a long period of my life have a stutter which resulted in selective mutism and could not talk in public settings for a large quantity of my middle school/high school time.
-I said Dang when she grabbed a pizza slice because it was huge.
-And maybe not given her a discount on a plant she bought. Which is weird because I always make sure my coworkers get their employee discount
Otherwise I have genuinely never had much communication with her. I’m not even trying to act like an innocent Angel. I legit cannot think about what I had done to her? We have worked maybe 4 times together?
I do know that she is currently suing her prior place of employment. And that she has also had complaints made on her by other employees.
Everyone in my family and my friends wants me to actually sue for harassment. But I have two weeks (technically I put in two and a half weeks.) and my only concern is my other coworkers.
So how should I write an email for them?

2024.05.20 03:18 JXNyoung Will Ospreay and the International Title

Found this excerpt during an interview he had on Swerve's podcast:
“For me, I’m a guy that enjoys seeing the world. I love doing that. Coming over here, obviously, I bring a little bit of flavor from around the world. I don’t want to forget about what made me. My main goal, I want to take AEW everywhere. I want to do shows in Tokyo, I want to do shows in Osaka, I want to do shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Dublin. That’s my main thing with AEW. I do want to take it around the world because I do believe that travel broadens us."
That short quote made me realize why Ospreay is a great candidate to take the title off of Roddy and bring the title back to its roots and being defended offshore from AEW and highlight talents around the world.
Regardless if this is an indication of DoN's outcome or not, I'm still really excited for the match. The story of Roddy goading Ospreay to use the Tiger Driver and being surrounded by Undisputed Kingdom will really force Ospreay to go superhero mode if he wants a chance to overcome the odds.
Also interesting to see how his former enemy in OC will play into things this Wednesday with the Don Callis Family.

2024.05.20 03:15 dyingnow8788 HVAC Noob home owner : Goodman Furnace vs Daikin Heat pump

Long story short, HVAC at my current house is acting up and thanks to SMUD rebates for heat pump, the Daikin Fit Heat pump and Goodman single stage AC both quoted at $16k. I want to do heat pump based connecting system but I am worried about all the moving pieces and potential problems in the future. FWIW the installer seem to be very experienced and knowledgable in Heat Pump installs.
Please advise.

2024.05.20 02:53 Amanda39 [Discussion] Armadale by Wilkie Collins Victorian Lady Detective Squad Readalong Book 4 Chapter 3 - End

Welcome back once more, for our final discussion of Armadale. I apologize again for the discussion being late. Last week, my excuse was that I had to spend time with my sister's family, including a labradoodle. This week, I am dog-sitting my mother's beagle, who has separation anxiety and gas. I am horribly sleep-deprived because this dog insists on sleeping next to my bed every night, snoring loudly and farting. Speaking of people breathing in poison in their sleep, let's get to the recap:
Allan has just set off for the Adriatic, with his cash converted to gold, obviously the result of Manuel's suggestions. Lydia and Ozias have been transferred to Turin by Ozias's employer, and Lydia pretends to have gotten a letter from her mother, asking her to come home, so she has an excuse to go back to London. Once there, she checks the newspaper for any articles or obituaries indicating that Allan has died. She also finds Mother Oldershaw's new address, but decides not to visit her.
After a few days, she finally gets the news she's been hoping for. Allan's yacht sunk off the southern coast of Italy, and everyone on board perished. Her next step is to write to Bashwood:
My dearest Bashwood,
I desire you... I mean, I desire to *meet with you... to apologize for my previous behavior towards you. I have foolishly made the mistake of marrying an immature child. If only I had married a real man (realness not necessarily extending to his teeth and hair)!*
Please, do not show this letter to anyone. Let us meet clandestinely.
Sincerely,
Lydia Armadale (note the last name)
Lydia then considers the marriage certificate, and realizes a glaring flaw in her plan: Ozias's handwriting looks nothing like Allan's. In a panic, she decides that her only option is to get advice from Mother Oldershaw. Unfortunately, Mother Oldershaw appears to have found God, and no longer wants anything to do with Lydia's plans. (Of course, she refuses to give Lydia the signed paper that she was going to use to extort money from Lydia if her plans succeeded.)
While leaving Oldershaw's, Lydia runs into Dr. Downward... excuse me, Dr. Le Doux, totally legitimate sanitarium owner. She realizes that he may be able to advise her, and asks to meet him later at the sanitarium. The sanitarium is basically what you'd expect a 19th-century sanitarium to be: creepy old house with shelves containing jars of preserved "creatures," a "galvanic apparatus" for providing electric shocks, etc. No patients yet, though.
Lydia tells the doctor her story, leaving out the worst details (he doesn't know that she's the reason the yacht sunk, or that her husband goes by the fake name "Ozias Midwinter"). Downward agrees to assist her by claiming to be a witness to the marriage... for a fee of six hundred pounds. Lydia agrees, and he assists her in sending a letter to Thorpe Ambrose, claiming to be Allan's widow.
The next day, Lydia gets a visit from Bashwood, who delivers the news that Neelie is beside herself with grief, and Mr. Darch is handling the matter of the inheritance, which was going to go to Allan's cousin, before Lydia announced her claim.
Bashwood returns a few days later with a shocking letter from Yugoslavia: Allan is alive! This is where I'd normally try to write a funny version of the letter, but nothing I could possibly write would be funnier than the actual letter's opening line: "I have been the victim of a rascally attempt at robbery and murder." Yes, "rascally." Oh, Allan, never change. One of the would-be murderers took pity on Allan and didn't securely board up his cabin, so he was able to escape instead of sinking with the yacht.
Lydia turns to Downward for help.
Downward: What if we trap Allan in the sanitarium?
Lydia: And murder him?
Downward: WTF, no. We get him to agree to not press legal charges against us.
Lydia: And then we murder him?
Downward: I have so many regrets about teaming up with you
Lydia: How do we catch him?
Downward: You could get Bashwood to lurk around the train station and intercept him before anyone else sees him. Have him tell Allan that Miss Milroy was sent here because she was driven insane by her grief for him.
Lydia: Can we murder Allan and Miss Milroy?
Downward: I am running an unlicensed sanitarium under a false name, and even I think you're unhinged.
Lydia: Gwilty as charged
Downward: But wait, what if he doesn't agree immediately, and we have to keep him here for months? What if I have actual patients at the time, and they report us?
Lydia: What if...
Downward: ...please don't say "murder"
Lydia: ...what if he had an accident?
Downward: Oh. Well, if it was an "accident," that would be okay. I don't know how an accident could happen, though, if you aren't an inmate here.
Lydia: I'll think about it
Meanwhile, Bashwood keeps vigil at the train station, until one day he sees... Ozias, who is searching for Lydia because she's stopped writing to him. While they talk to each other, Bashwood can't contain his shock at hearing that Lydia is Ozias's wife, and accidentally calls her "Mrs. Armadale," which understandably makes Ozias suspicious, so he follows Bashwood to see where he goes, which of course leads him straight to Lydia. Lydia pretends she was never married to Ozias, and Ozias faints from the shock.
Lydia heads straight to the sanitarium, tells Downward she's going to be an inmate, and asks for a sleeping draught. Downward prepares the draught, but first places yellow liquid in a purple flask. He then informs Lydia of what he thinks they should say at the inquest after Allan dies: The two of them knew he hadn't drowned, but when he arrived in England, they decided to trap him in the sanitarium because, shortly after his marriage to Lydia, Allan had starting having a delusion that he was engaged to Neelie. Once in the sanitarium, Downward diagnosed Allan with an incurable and fatal brain ailment, and that's what killed him.
Downward has scheduled a "Visitors' Day" so that people will witness Lydia as an inmate in the asylum. The visitors are mostly women, because life as a woman in Victorian England was so boring, they had nothing better to do than go to sanitariums to gawk at the mentally ill people and see where they will eventually live when the hysteria finally drives them mad. (I am only barely paraphrasing. The actual quote is "In the miserable monotony of the lives led by a large section of the middle classes of England, anything is welcome to the women which offers them any sort of harmless refuge from the established tyranny of the principle that all human happiness begins and ends at home.")
Downward shows them around the sanitarium and explains how it will be run, including only allowing novels that make people feel comfortable. (I assumed this was an intentional satire of Wilkie's critics, and the notes in the Oxford World's Classics edition confirmed this.)
But then Downward gave a sales pitch that damn near sold me on his sanitarium. "I throw up impregnable moral intrenchments between Worry and You. ... Will ten minutes’ irritation from a barking dog or a screeching child undo every atom of good done to a nervous sufferer by a month’s medical treatment? There isn’t a competent doctor in England who will venture to deny it!" Considering I almost couldn't post last week's discussion because of a few hours' exposure to two loud children and a labradoodle, I'm about ready to self-diagnose with hysteria and deranged lunacy.
He also explains that while the bedrooms lack fireplaces, they're heated with hot water. This impressed me because I've read about Victorian insane asylums not having fireplaces in the bedrooms (since the inmates might burn themselves), but I always assumed this meant that the inmates were cold in the winter. But wait... the bedroom also has secret controls that let him open, close, and lock the window and door from the outside, and a vent that lets him pump gas into the room. Whaaat? I rescind my diagnosis of hysteria and deranged lunacy. I want nothing to do with this.
After the tour is finished, Downward demonstrates to Lydia how to prepare the poison, and then breaks the bottle so that his assistant (who doesn't know about the purple flask) will think there's no more of that chemical in the house.
Meanwhile, Ozias is stalking Bashwood at the train station. He thinks Lydia is cheating on him, and Bashwood is waiting for Lydia's lover. But then he sees Bashwood with Allan. After confronting the two of them, he learns Bashwood's story about having to take Allan to Neelie in the sanitarium. Realizing that Lydia is probably still behind Bashwood's actions, Ozias insists on going with the two of them. On arriving at the sanitarium, Allan is informed that Neelie cannot see him until the morning, but he and Ozias are welcome to spend the night: Allan in Room Four, and Ozias in Room Three.
Lydia sets Bashwood up to spy on Allan's door from a room with a grate in its door. She tells him to make sure Allan stays in his room all night. Later, watching from the grate, Bashwood observes Ozias leave his room and examine the fumigating apparatus connected to Allan's room. Then Ozias stuffs his handkerchief in the grate, blocking Bashwood's view, before going into Allan's room and convincing Allan to switch rooms with him.
Later that night, Lydia returns and asks Bashwood if anything happened. Too afraid to tell her about the handkerchief, he tells her nothing happened, and she dismisses him to bed. After almost convincing herself to not go through with it, she then starts the process of pouring the poison at five minute intervals. While waiting for one of the intervals to pass, she notices Ozias's handkerchief and realizes that Bashwood lied to her. She checks in Room Three, and finds Allan asleep where Ozias should be.
In a panic, Lydia rushes into Room Four and drags the unconscious Ozias out. She then continues to pour the poison, writes a last letter to Ozias, and locks herself in the room.
We end with an epilogue that rapidly ties up all the random loose ends. Lydia has been buried in a nearly unmarked grave. The doctor is apparently still running his sanitarium. Allan and Neelie will be married in the spring. Mrs. Milroy doesn't have much longer to live, but she's undergone a personality change for some reason and she and the Major are happy for once. Ozias is recovering and living with Allan. Mother Oldershaw is a religious speaker, apparently. Bashwood has gone insane. Manuel drowned.
But wait, one last thing: Wilkie has something to say to us. He wants us to know that he intended the dream to be left up to interpretation. Thanks for handing me a discussion question like that, Wilkie. He also shares a weird-ass story about how, after he'd finished the rough draft and while the story was in the middle of serialization, several people were poisoned in their sleep on a boat called The Armadale. Okay, Wilkie. Thank you for that incredibly weird anecdote.

2024.05.20 02:44 Jake_CB I’ve failed my best friend

I had a 5.5 year old white German Shepherd. One night I came home from work and he was not eating, the next day he still hadn’t eaten anything. Later that night his neck and face were incredibly swollen so I rushed him to the emergency vet. The vet sedated him and examined his throat and showed me that his tonsils were the size of golf balls. They also ultrasound and aspirated his swollen neck but nothing was shown. They sent me home with antibiotics and anti inflammatory saying that if it does not get better that it could be an abscess due to a foreign body such as a fox tail weed which we do have in our yard or an allergic reaction and we should plan CT/Exploratory surgery and told me it could be around 3k for those before treatment and stay. The diagnosis at the time was majority cellulitis.
During the course of his medicine he improved greatly. His facial swelling went down, he started acting normal, eating as usual, but his throat swelling was still present.
After the medicine was finished he was still good until 2 days later his eyes looked a little red. I planned on going to a standard vet that was 2 days out because he was still playing, eating, etc. The next day I came home and his eyes were half red and looked to be filled with blood. I was freaking out and noticed he was, what I thought at the time lethargic and also not eating again.
I brought him back to the emergency vet (about a week after initial visit) and as soon as I walked in they told me he was blind (bilateral hyphema) and my heart sank, I could only think if I brought him in the previous day then maybe his vision could’ve been saved as he could see 24 hours prior. Shortly after telling me that, the vet immediately told me it doesn’t look good. He had a fever of 105.9 and the swelling in his neck was firm as a rock. She first said it could very well be cancer. The inflammation was so bad it caused the bleeding in his eyes. She then told me they couldn’t do anything because they didn’t have a CT machine there but decided to x ray him anyway. Nothing showed up.
After the x ray the vet just looked at me. She told me that she read in my report that I couldn’t really afford a CT scan and the future surgery and that she could prescribe me another round of medicine to give it one last shot and to think about “quality of life” during that week. I immediately knew what that meant and I lost it. Man in his 30s crying for the first time in a while in front of all these people. She then proceeded to tell me that “It would be an alright choice to put him to sleep now.”
It was a blur, she kind of just guided me in there and it started happening, placing IV etc... Honestly I can’t even remember if I said anything or shook my head a certain way to result in this but I went along anyway thinking is was the right thing. Anyway, 30 minutes later he was peacefully, permanently, asleep in my arm. Then I just walked out with his collar that I came in with and left him. My shirt covered in his hair and slobber…
I feel an incredible amount of guilt. He was purely innocent and so happy. Playing ball with me not even 24 hours prior. It was true I didn’t have money to pays for the thousands in vet bills. I have a stay at home wife and a 1 year old and 3 year old boy and didn’t have the type of money I had prior to all of that… but the thing is I had him first and he didn’t ask for any of this. Looking back I should have sold my car and took a bus to work or something to just try the CT. I cannot believe I let him go so easily.
I don’t know why I’m posting this. I guess I think that someone should know what I’ve done.
Sorry.

2024.05.20 02:26 sssurrrealism IEI So4 archetype and its correlations with AP typology system

**Sorry i wanted to post this article in two communities. I hope this is not a problem 😭
Lately the whole typology community has been obsessed with narrowing down possible combinations between types of different typology systems. This tendency, without any exaggerations, has reached a point of absurdity. Unfortunately the majority of community supports the idea of strict archetypes, neglecting the fact that human psyche is not a material thing that can fit into certain categories. Our consciousness surely can be characterised by some definitions or dichotomies, nonetheless all typology systems were inherently created to describe mental processes, not to force people fit into specific categorisations. All sciences change their theories if they don’t correspond to reality - for some reason this rule is not applied in typology. The community decided that we have to adjust people’s identities to fit into some rules that are not always correct.
Of course, some combinations are obviously not possible, but that absolutely doesn’t mean that we have to get rid of almost every correlations. Borders between various typology systems are not precise since each of them focuses on its own peculiar studies of human personality. This is the reason why sometimes it’s just impossible to amalgamate some typology methods to create a correlation between them.
In this article i want to talk about IEI so4 archetype and its combinations with types of attitudinal psyche method of typology.
First of all let’s emphasise that 4th enneagram type belongs to heart triad. This means that individuals who identify themselves with this enneatype can only be ethical types in socionics. Considering the fact that 4th enneagram type is also known as a withdrawn one, individuals who associate themselves with this enneatype are most likely to be introverts.
Now let’s dive deeper into details of social subtype. I want to quote a description from this website: “The social instinct motivates us to create relationships and care for the wellbeing of others. It includes our desire to positively enhance the lives of those we care for. When sensitive to the social instinct, we’re interested and curious about people beyond what they can be or do for us. The social drive is what helps us to assess who is and who isn’t a worthy friend, ally or partner, without losing sight of the humanity of anyone we may be in conflict with.
Description of So-IV subtype by Claudio Naranjo: “Social Fours develop mechanisms for *calling negative attention to themselves*. The shyest of the Four subtypes. There's a shame about desiring, about "loving." Proust is filled with the social envy of the person dazzled by the "aristocracy," who has a passion for being "in", who wants to be included, to receive their favors. A feeling of "I'm nothing," "I'm ugly," "I'm silly." Fours in general want to absorb through their gaze, but this is especially true for the Social Four
I think both of aforementioned citations are without any doubt correlated to the Fe-function in ego-block position: “Fe is generally associated with the ability to recognize and *convey (i.e. make others experience) passions, moods, and emotional states, … , recognize and describe emotional interaction between people** and groups, and build a sense of emotional unity.*” - desertion is taken from this website:
We can conclude that So-4 enneagram subtype strives to share own emotions with others, in other words to evoke certain impressions in the public. It means that such individuals are focused on their emotional impact on others. This statement also corresponds to the description of the emotional aspect in the 2nd position, which is conscious, extroverted and subjective: “Second Emotions provoke the expression of reactions, showdown. They encourage acting in other people.” - https://wiki.personality-database.com/books/psychosophy-attitudinal-psyche/page/emotion
Now let’s discuss why IEI So-4 individuals may have the volitional aspect in the 4th position. Description of 4V:The Fourth Will becomes weak-willed, waiting for decisions and active actions from others... Such individual can take the lead, but only if he is “assigned” by those around him, but hardly of his own free will, because he does not like to strain and bear responsibility too much. There is an opinion that the Fourth Wills have no ambitions - this is not so. But it is easier for them to realize their ambitions alone, without responsibility “for a common cause”. In addition, 4V can be “infected” with your dreams and plans with prolonged exposure”.
Aforesaid statement is almost identical to the definition of suggestive Se:
He is additionally very indecisive. He may lack the ability to make important decisions, especially with regards to his own future. He may know what he wants to achieve out of life in a broad or long term sense, but will find it very difficult to set and finish the short term projects leading to it. In order to be able to act, he needs a tangible and definite stimulus from somebody well grounded in external reality and who has a clear picture of what must be done in a certain situation.
All these arguments indicate that IEI So-4 archetype can be not only an ExVx in attitudinal psyche typology system, but also an xExV.
Thanks for your attention !!!!

I'd like to have this thread be filled with the most memorable quotes of your exwBPD (or current BPD partner) you think are self-explanatory. I'll start:
Just so you know, I was being absolutely loving towards her and did my best to be a good boyfriend. This was only 2.5 months of relationship before I broke up and went NC. There's that.

3rd Week Of May Watchlist: $SUUN Pennant Pattern + $GWAV at a critical point after its 400% rise last week (with charts)
I hope everyone had a great and relaxing weekend, but it's time to get back to making plays! $GWAV got really hot towards the end of last week, and it is at a pivotal point to either continue its recent uptrend or start to reverse. $SUUN highlights a promising growth opportunity in the renewable energy sector and is looking even stronger than $GWAV. If you trade these types of setups, take a look. And remember, the only way to make gains is to take profits :) Let's get into it!
First up, we have $SUUN (Solarbank Corp.). This stock has been steadily climbing since its inception, driven by significant developments and strategic initiatives in renewable energy. With the US government heavily investing in clean energy projects, Solarbank Corp. is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend. The company's recent entry into the electric vehicle charger market and participation in IESO’s proposals for 4,000 MW of year-round electricity capacity add to its bullish outlook.
  • The chart shows a bullish pennant formation, indicating potential for further upside. Will be watching the trendlines and volume to confirm the breakout
  • MACD is crossing upwards on the 4-hour chart, signaling positive momentum.
  • Key resistance levels are around $6.30, $6.50, and $7.00. Breaking these could lead to a significant rally and also be good profit-taking levels if you are in this for a swing trade.

Next up, we have $GWAV (Greenwave Technology Solutions, Inc.). This stock blew up on Thursday and Friday, and many people were talking about this stock in this sub. The stock flew a total of 400% before retracing at the current trendline. This stock could go either way in the short term, depending on the volume and interest next week. Make sure you keep an eye on this trendline if you are already in!
$GWAV Chart Analysis:
  • The chart indicates a bullish trendline support, suggesting the stock may continue its upward trajectory, but if there is little volume next week there is a chance this stock could break below and turn highly bearish.
  • MACD on the hourly has a bearish cross, so keep that in mind.
  • Watch for support around $0.15 and potential resistance around $0.20. A breakout in either direction is possible, so be prepared

2024.05.20 01:47 LadyTrixieRed Mentally exhausted caregiver

I am so tired, mentally and physically. I don't know what to do anymore.
My hubby (60m) was diagnosed with GBM of the left parietal lobe on May 2, 2023. He had surgery on May 4, followed by radiation and chemo. He was doing really well until last month, when he was hospitalized with seizures. Mind you, this was his first setback, 11 months post diagnosis, and it is NOT due to tumor progression.
The seizures really took a lot away from him. His short term memory is gone, and his long term memory is iffy at times. His right side is weak. He has problems discerning reality from dreams at times. He refused to stay in hospital rehab and they discharged him 4 days after he arrived. Regardless of the strain it put on me, he insisted on coming home, and I was tired of arguing with him about it daily, especially after spending a week at his bedside while he was unconscious. He could barely walk, but home he came.
He has gotten stronger over the past month. He pushes himself to walk and do things around the house, even when he shouldn't. His recovery isn't fast enough for him, though. He is convinced that he is slipping. I have told him that maybe he would be further along if he had stayed in rehab, or did any of the things that were recommended by his doctors. But they don't know anything, and neither do I, don't you know?
I understand that he is hurting. I understand that he is ill. I understand that this disease is horrible, and that it will eventually take him. But I can only take so much mollycoddling and feeling sorry for one's self! It's been over a year, and he is STILL HERE! He is functioning. He is SO VERY LUCKY to be alive! I see people in this group who lose loved ones within months or weeks of diagnosis, and my heart breaks for them! His focus is only on what he has lost, and on his impending demise, instead of being thankful for the time with which he has has been blessed.
And that makes me angry. So very angry! If I said this to anyone outside of this group, you lovely people who actually get it because you are going through it on one side or the other, I would get shocked, pearl clutching gasps of horror. "How can you say that about someone with cancer?!" Quite easily, actually. Constantly feeling sorry for himself isn't helping a thing. It's hurting his recovery. I'm of the "just grit your teeth and do what you must" school of thought, which is probably why his attitude annoys me so! I want him to FIGHT, not roll over and give up! If anyone had said "That's it. There's nothing more we can do", I would be so much more understanding. But that isn't so! Make peace then, but not before.
Thanks for letting me vent.

Origami above (almost) everyone - DAL vol 10 cover + some illustrations
Hello guys, since I read Date a Live, I realized that the novel has a certain quality that even more popular and cult novels do not have and that seems to go unnoticed by the fandom, the covers. Yes, the covers are spectacular and break away from the standard of most LNs, there is not just fanservice, there is not just a character striking a cool pose, we actually have covers with a certain visual narrative, whether a connection with the highlighted spirit itself or with the story itself and I will be pleased to show this to you, here are the rules:
  • Due to the oriental reading sense being left -> right of the page, the details will be presented respecting this sense.
  • A picture is worth a thousand words, and DAL is a novel so the images are even more valuable, the idea here is to analyze the covers and relevant illustrations to understand hints, references, foreshadowing, and contexts.
  • Pure fanservice images will not be taken into consideration (at least most of them). No, I’m not the type of otaku who says things like: “fanservice is unnecessary, objectification of women, too gratuitous and empty, it only serves to “excite the viewer””, the last one is even plausible and I understand those who think like this, but all the others are nothing more than cheap demagoguery. They will not be taken into consideration because in addition to not actually adding to the plot most of them are posted to exhaustion on this reddit.
  • Major spoilers will be avoided, at least directly.
{LN 10 Cover}
https://preview.redd.it/erh6epoirg1d1.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aff919953d6ba578e05b05deeb01f60b64a7bee0
  • Author's name.
The first element is Tachibana’s name, again.
  • The highlighted girl.
The girl of the moment is… Origami? But how is Origami a spirit?
Calm down, my boy, you haven’t missed anything, in fact I promised plot twists and we have one right on the cover.
As for the spirit Origami, I want to draw attention to two things. The first is obviously her astral dress which is a wedding dress, each astral dress follows the taste of its spirit user and Origami as a child had the dream of being a wife, but there is much more than that, so this Astral Dress is a small hint of the main plot, this will become clearer in the Spirit Info topic.
The second is about the facial expression, Origami looks like she is waking up, this may symbolize that she has just become a spirit, it may be a premonition of the plot of this volume, which deals with Origami discovering the truth about her past. But this expression will be referenced in a scene that will happen 7 volumes later, when we get there I will talk about it.
  • Angel Tobiichi.
In the volume, Origami calls the spirit that killed her parents “angel”, look at the hint there.
Again the subtitle cites the spirit’s surname, the other time this happened was in the volume 4, Sister Itsuka, clearly there is a connection here as the Tenguu-Nankou fire was a relevant event for both spirits, I also believe that the work opts to use surnames if we already know the spirit of the cover and the main reason is that Tobiichi is written with the character 1, let’s go to the next topic.
  • Spirit info.
Origami is the bearer of the first sephirot and, suddenly, everything makes sense. The first important thing here is the rivalry between Tohka and Origami. Tohka is spirit number 10, Sephiroth Malkuth, the kingdom, the final receptacle that concentrates the creative force now in its densest and residual state, while Origami is spirit number 1, Sephirot Kether, force and light in its most subtle state that flows to the others, Malkuth is a reflection of Kether on a lower plane. The rivalry between Tohka and Origami reaches its definitive stage but there is still a small detail missing.
That is, Origami, among the spirits, is the closest to God. But it’s still too early to talk about this.
And yes, spirit number 10 is on the cover of volume 1 and spirit number 1 is on the cover of volume 10, I would have liked to come here and say that I discovered this but Tachibana put this information in the afterword.
Her codename is "Angel", again this word, the name of the angel is Metatron.
  • The title.
The title goes back to being in front of the spirit, in the composition “Date” above and “A Live” below and whenever this happens the rule that must be respected is, the characters corresponding to “Live” are always positioned in the belly of the spirit.
  • Background
Last but not least, the background, this time very hidden and perhaps in a horizontal strip format, I say perhaps because that part of the astral dress occupies almost the entire cover in that part. The novelty is due to the positioning of the strip that frames Origami’s legs, which gives a rather empty aspect to this cover. Referring to the position of Origami’s Sephiroth, closest to God, above the other sephiroth, as well as referring to the main scene of this volume.
The scenario is a bit hidden, there are some debris there but nothing that allows to fully identify the scene but obviously there is a fire happening there, which is obviously a reference to that relevant event again, the great fire in Tenguu-Nankou. I don’t even need to say how relevant this event is to Origami’s life, in her first illustration in volume 1, she says: “Five years ago a spirit killed my parents.”
Finally, in my opinion this is one of the best covers, again, just imagine you go to the convenience store to buy this newly released volume and find out that Origami is a spirit, just by the shock the value is already high, if you already know the story of the anime and stop to analyze the cover, the value is double the previous one, if you know the whole story of Date a Live, and try to analyze the cover in a deeper way, the value is the squared of the previous one.
Let’s open the volume.
{Illustration 2}
https://preview.redd.it/c4ugx8zkrg1d1.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d18e1c3a7176fb4e57acb7a7416e3183d5d526c7
There’s something different about this volume, the compositions have improved a lot, apparently a reflection of the success of the animation.
The high school student and protagonist of this story, Shido Itsuka, says: “Tohka and the other girls just want a normal life.”
But wait, Shido is tied to a chair in a strange room and there in the middle is a bottle of water. Ok, it seems that Origami really changed sides.
The wizard who hates spirits is unyielding and responds that she will not only kill the spirits, “but also the entity that made me have a relationship with them.”
In the middle of the illustration there is a crack in the wall, symbolic.
{Illustration 3}
https://preview.redd.it/7twwgnymrg1d1.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=11bdb8e276eacb62eaf9ed7b353a704e5d8818c2
Another plot twist, Tohka is in full astral dress. And not only that, the spirit Tohka is making a declaration of hatred to Origami.
“Origami Tobiichi, I have hated you from the beginning, but the hatred I feel for you now is probably different from the hatred I used to have before and for that reason, this time I will intend to kill you, don’t die, Origami.”
Despite everything, this is a cute declaration because for the first time Tohka calls Origami by her name and not satisfied asks Origami to resist because even though she is angry, she does not want to kill Origami.
Tohka will gain a little development in this volume, hence the illustration, we will talk about this scene later.
{Illustration 4}
https://preview.redd.it/e459j6oprg1d1.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5bf272291179a955d8f2f06f1e7aea1bd4abcf4e
Gentlemen, one of the best illustrations of DAL.
The spirit Origami says: “Metatron!”
Tohka says: “Origami, why did you become a spirit!?”
In a great composition by Tsunako, Tohka and Origami are referencing the positions of their sephiroth in the tree of life. Origami appears in a superior position, distant from the “camera” and in front of the sun representing illumination, Kether, while the representative of the Kingdom, Malkhut, is in a much lower position, in the foreground and with her back to the reader. So, besides everything, they are staring at each other, symbolizing the mirroring already mentioned before.
And speaking of mirroring, do you remember the illustration I asked you to keep? As I know I asked a lot I will make it easier for you, I am talking about the mono illustration number 9 of volume 2, I warned that that image would be mirrored and there it is. In the aforementioned image Origami was still wearing a basic CR Unit from AST and Tohka for the first time debuted in her limited astral dress, the reader’s angle, our angle, brought Origami almost back in the foreground, in the image now the camera position has inversed and now we are with the vision of Tohka.
A great illustration but what generates more content here for sure are the illustrations of the table of contents, I’m sure the next one will please some people here.
{Table of contents}
https://preview.redd.it/pk2fbzqsrg1d1.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a97157f277b2b04ba05100a26aa8f41b9d96d5a1
Look who’s back, Kurumi Tokisaki, it’s been a while since I’ve talked about “The worst spirit.”
But there’s nothing enigmatic here, it’s just Kurumi from the back (we’ve seen and will see many backs in this volume) and as for the phrase, she just stole Kotori’s catchphrase, I’m sure she wouldn’t be happy if another character started saying “ara ara” around.
Anyway, just having Kurumi here is hype enough because, whether you like the girl or not, just her being here is a sign that something relevant is going to happen.
{Mono Illustration 5}
https://preview.redd.it/q15slhcwrg1d1.jpg?width=766&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b701c43f35ccc5fbfc6be162cd2d428c19ae3817
Ellen seems confident, on the other hand Kotori seems impatient.
To ensure that Fraxinus does not interfere with Origami’s fight, Ellen plans to use the newest toy that DEM has manufactured, the Goetia ship (another name related to magic and occultism).
Ellen and Kotori have a small dialogue where Shido’s sister tries to provoke THE STRONGEST WIZARD IN THE WORLD, but Miss Matthers is calm today, at least until she mentions Woodman.
The duel is unavoidable.
{Mono Illustration 6}
https://preview.redd.it/0a44e2fzrg1d1.jpg?width=766&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9f961966e5f536bd04af5f7325a8d7c98dcb9cce
There is a lot to talk about here, let’s start with the context.
Origami challenged the spirits Tohka, Yamais, and Miku to a fight to the death and by being equipped with the CR-Unit Mordred, Origami is able to build an advantage in the fight, she leaves Tohka unconscious and hurts the other 3 a lot, the former sergeant-major decides to start the killing by Yuzuru, precisely the spirit she got along with the most. It is at this moment that Tohka wakes up and seeing this whole scene she begins to go through the inversion process, but Tohka manages to interrupt this process, two passages stand out.
“This power would not save anyone.” She didn’t want to save just Kaguya, Yuzuru, and Miku, she wanted to save Origami too.
“She was an arrogant, violent, uneducated, and foul-mouthed girl, Tohka never knew what was going on in the mind of that girl who always bothered her. Even so, Tohka wanted to hold that girl’s hands.”
Tohka says: “Shido, lend me your strength.” And she gets her full powers back. And so the two engage in a really cool fight, at this moment the narration becomes from Origami’s point of view, there is a detailing about the features of Mordred and the fighting movements, time passes a little and Origami begins to feel too confident. She begins to ramble about having the ability to kill spirits, she begins to think about the death of her parents, about what she saw in the DEM report of the fire in Tenguu-Nankou.
Clearly Origami is not well, finally her body collapses and we have an illustration.
Now talking about the illustration itself, this is a reference to Mono Illustration 2 of volume 1, whose differences I highlight now. The most obvious difference is about Tohka who is no longer with that serious and empty look, here Tohka is clearly angry and screaming, in a way such expressiveness demonstrates how much this girl has developed.
Still about Tohka, this time it is she who is making an attack movement, but there is no blood in this image, an indication that it was not an attack to kill.
The other difference is about Origami, in that illustration I quote how much the “expressionless” Origami demonstrated tension, effort, and pressure, and I highlight the drop of sweat on her face. Something we can’t do here because this time Origami is with her back to the “camera” not allowing us to see her eyes.
“The eyes are the window to the soul” So not showing the eyes is a strong symbolism, you can’t read the person’s emotions, you can’t even recognize the person, humanity is taken from the person and about this, this is the last illustration in which Origami Tobiichi is still human, because…
{Mono illustration 7}
https://preview.redd.it/1x6bx464sg1d1.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b88de0aa5fbe00002ce78523b449d149d102302f
Origami became a spirit.
“Hey, is it power that you desire?”
“What are you?”
Origami used [What] instead of [Who] in reflex. [It] might have guessed what she meant and laughed as if it found it funny.
“What I am doesn’t matter now.”
After becoming spirit Origami, without delay, she goes to Tohka and then we have the illustration which is of Origami using Metatron’s Shemesh skill.
{Mono Illustration 9}
https://preview.redd.it/43ary5y9sg1d1.jpg?width=766&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25ec601b07e71cd20bc3f1061f2dd8f32daa25df
Ara, ara.
Origami was so crazy that it was only after seeing Shido and running away from there that this girl began to understand the points, mainly about who gave her the spirit powers, the mysterious “Phantom”.
She reflects a little more and realizes that a certain spirit may have the ability to go back in time. About the illustration itself, another beautiful composition by Tsunako, in it we can contemplate Kurumi, apparently on a terrace, with building lights, Kurumi appears joyful in seeing Origami.
“It’s been a long time, Origami-san!”
As for Origami, again she is with her back turned and carrying a clone of Kurumi. The anime softened but here in the novel Origami seems to have returned the “affection” that Kurumi had done to her in volume 3 in the form of a very strong “massage”. But the clone does not seem to have liked it.
“I did not come here to fight.”
“Among the 12 bullets, is there one that can go back in time?”
Kurumi makes a little suspense but answers that, yes, there is, Origami asks her to lend her this bullet.
At first Kurumi denies, but since we are talking a little more about the Kabbalah, the Sephiroth of the worst spirit is Binah, the understanding, realizing that Tobiichi would not leave there without a “yes” as an answer Kurumi asks “why?”
“I want to go back 5 years and kill the spirit that killed my parents.”
At this moment the narration enters Kurumi’s thoughts, she begins to think that Origami came to her because she felt so invincible and therefore would force Kurumi to do what she wants, if necessary.
But then Kurumi begins to think that it was just a miscalculation by the girl, a miscalculation caused by the temptation to change the past.
“And Kurumi understood so much that it even hurt.”
Kurumi accepts but will not do this for free, time travel would cost a lot of lifetime, but that would not be a problem since now Origami has plenty of it.
{Mono Illustration 10}
https://preview.redd.it/fyubgawdsg1d1.jpg?width=766&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e79e4113ca1068c56d0cf786c3ab77843b720e36
Origami discovered the harsh truth.
She really went to the past, had a brief fight with Phantom, managed to be the first to take off Phantom’s "mask", also managed to hear Phantom’s real voice, and when she thought she had also managed to save her parents, when she looked down there was a little girl swearing Origami to death, the little girl was Origami herself 5 years ago.
“I will definitely kill you!”
“Who killed… my father and my mother… Was me…”
  • Mini review of the volume.
This was Volume 10, released on March 20, 2014, about 2 weeks before the second season premiered, and it’s a sensational volume.
First of all, it’s a volume full of plot twists, Shido in private imprisonment, Origami fighting with the intention to kill 4 spirits at once, Fraxinus being defeated by Ellen’s Goetia, Tohka returning to use a full astral dress, Origami becoming a spirit, Origami going to the past, Origami facing Phantom, Origami killing her own parents, the illustrations end there but there’s still a lot of content, Origami inverts, Inverse Origami destroys all of Tenguu City and finally Kurumi going to Shido, Shido also being sent to the past. Entertainment and tension are not lacking here.
Did you notice that the lore makes a lot of references to the first volumes? This volume also makes a point of rewarding the reader for all this time following the story, the plot twist of Origami for example, was foreshadowed back in Volume 1, when she aims at Tohka but hits and "kills" Shido, from there a big hint that Origami has the bad habit of killing, by accident, the people she loves the most.
Origami was not the only character developed here, Tohka also grows and thanks the Shido’s ideology, at no time did she deny the existence of Origami and even though she said she was going to attack to kill she asked Origami not to die.
Although short, Kurumi had a great participation and we were able to learn more about her and for someone who is known as “the worst spirit” she was quite kind.
The only impediment for Volume 10 to sit alongside the best volumes of DAL is because most of the answers are in the next volume and when we take into consideration what both have to offer, the overall impression about Volume 10 improves, after all there is a big cliffhanger for Volume 11.
Origami managed to take off Phantom’s “mask” and even hear her voice, with that we can know that Phantom is a girl and is someone Origami knows, that is, she is also someone we know.
That’s it, Origami was a spirit all this time, and next we will find out how Shido and Kurumi will solve this mess. Finally, stay with this iconic phrase that Origami says in this volume, the phrase says a lot about many things in DAL.
“I will now wield this power to defeat the Spirits. I will become the Spirit that kills Spirits. Once I eliminate all Spirits────I will erase the last one, me”.

2024.05.20 00:39 Chen_Geller Season Two and The Great Weta Conundrum

Season Two and The Great Weta Conundrum

Why I don't THINK Weta Workshop Worked on Season Two

Around July 2022, Sir Richard Taylor had this to say about The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: "Our company worked on the first series, we're very proud of the fact that we did." This use of the past tense does seem to imply working only on the first season, but its by no means a definitive reading of the interview. This was shortly BEFORE the show's move to the UK, which we know came to the Kiwi crew by complete surprise, although it remains possible that by that point the showrunners had made the decision, and told Weta that their services will not be required for season two without necessarily going into details.
Again, I want to stress that Sir Richard's choice of words by no means guarentees that Weta sat season two out. Then again, we know many of the Kiwi contractors have either stopped working for the show - costumier Kate Hawley and the music ensemble Plan 9, for instance - or radically downscaled their involvement, like caligrapher Daniel Reeve. Where crew from season one stayed on - like John Howe and dialect coach Leith McPherson - they were usually based in Europe or the UK to begin with. Its thus only reasonable to assume Weta will do the same.
Weta were good sports to share the lead-up to the Season Two teaser on their Twitter handle, but hadn't commented nor shared the teaser itself, suggesting that they were merely (and characteristically) being gracious to a project they HAD worked on previously, rather than setting-up their own involvement, as they had done in their steadfast embracing of Season One.
One of the two major departments Weta worked on for the show in Season One - that being prosthetics - had perforce been put out of their hands for Season Two, with the prosthetics supervisor Barrie Gower replacing Weta's Jamie Wilson. Its unrealistic to expect to ship prosthetics - which have a limited shelf life - from halfway around the world, and ideally you'd want the same studio to be responsible for design, fabrication and on-set application.
Although they also worked on Celebrimbor's pressure forge and some of the Numenorean and Elven symbols - including the High-Elven star, practically lifted from their version of Gil-galad's emblem for the New Line films - Weta's other main prerogative was the weapons (but NOT the armour). This included bows, quivers, arrows, shields (including straps) and some props that aren't really used as weapons like Feanor's hammer.
The High-Elven Star: essentially a homage Weta's Daniel Falconer snuck into the show
While it remains possible that they had kept that department under their belt - at least in terms of concept design rather than fabrication - I find it unlikely. Its true that Weta does provide concept art, without fabrication, for off-shore productions: see their erstwhile work for Denis Villenueve's Dune: Part One as an example.
However, the recent teaser shows High-Elven swords and bows that are a notable departure from Weta's High-Elven weapons from Season One. It, of course, remains entirely permissible that the showrunners commissioned new designs from the workshop, and in fact the new, more katana-like Elven swords are closer to Weta's previous iterations of Elven swords (cf. Hadhafang or Thranduil's twin swords) than to their High-Elven weapons for Season One, although they're admittedly not too far off Arondir's sword.
Having said that, elsewhere in the trailer we see the same Hawley costumes and armour retained, as well as the same Weta-made weapons from Season One: Arondir is still sporting his daggers, quiver and bow, Pharazon draws his gorgeous, bejewelled sword before the Eagle of Manwe, flanked by guards carrying the same ol' spears. We see Lindon guards with their Battersea-esque shields and spears, Durin III with his ax, Durin IV with his dagger, Adar with his Zweihander, and Isildur still with the confusingly-Rohan-like Numenorean cavalry sword.
The similarities would thus make it unlikely to expect for new designs - for the same culture and from the same studio - to be such an aesthetic departure from Season One, especially something as insignificant as a quiver. My educated guess - and that's all it is, a guess - is that its a local workshop emulating the Weta style of old.
This emulation can also be seen in other departments, like the new Elven shields - with the same hourglass-like shape as Weta's High-Elven shields for the New Line films, but NOT for the show - and the helmets with the more overt blade-like crests, again in the style of Weta's work for New Line rather than Hawley's more subtle nod to that style in Season One. Not to mention the seemingly greater prevalence of Elves with long manes.
Galadriel and company, and their quivers: a design unlikely to be revised from Weta's Season One design (below) unless a new, local Workshop entered the fray. The company's bows, seen elsewhere, are also different to this, more closely resembling Tauriel's bow.

The OTHER Weta

Here it is important to distinguish between Weta Workshop, and WetaFX (nee Weta Digital). Although founded by the same people - Sir Peter Jackson, Sir Richard Taylor and Jamie Selkirk - they're two separate companies: Roughly speaking, Weta Workshop does practical effects, WetaFX does digital effects. While they do some projects - notably Tolkien films - together, its by no means a condition sine qua non that the involvement of the one entails that of the other.
In the context of the Tolkien projects, Workshop mostly did weapons, armour and creatures, so not too far off of what they did in the show. Set, props and character designs usually fell to another Jackson company, Six-Foot-Seven, but even then Weta did the bigatures and shared the costume design credit with Ngilla Dickson, Bob Buck and Ann Maskrey (Hawley is credited, too, being that she was the costume designer for the aborted Del Toro Hobbit).
WetaFX are working on Season Two, in a capacity at least as big as they did in Season One, where they were the main VFX vendor alongside ILM. Moreso than the Workshop, WetaFX (being one the leading VFX houses in the world), provides services for films and shows all over the world, and frankly a show with the VFX requirements of The Rings of Power couldn't avoid WetaFX if they tried, although "giving them point" so to speak is definitely a meaningful gesture.
Strictly speaking, WetaFX is not a design studio: previously in Tolkien pictures, creature design tended to be provided by Weta Workshop, and then rendered by WetaFx. However, sometime before The Rings of Power went into production, one of the Workshop's designers, Nick Keller, became WetaFX' in-house designer, and for Season One had worked on (among other things) Durin's Bane, and so WetaFX' continued involvement in Season Two is meaningful to the look of the show.
An (unused) Nick Keller-Weta FX design for Season One: all that remains of it in the show are the spear and the Fell Beast
The showrunners entrusted to WetaFX in Season One mostly with places and creatures that had been depicted in the live-action films: Khazad dum as Moria, the view of the Southlands from Ostirith as Mordor, as well as Durin's Bane and the Fell Beasts: its therefore reasonable to assume that the design of Shelob will again be entrusted to WetaFX, although since New Line became stricter with their copyright she's unlikely to resemble the previous depiction of Shelob, no doubt to be excused away by the fact that she's younger.

My thought

So, where does this leave us? I've long written about the show's audiovisual identity crisis: it would be wrong to assume that, going to New Zealand, the showrunners were compelled to hire Weta and thus fell headlong into a similar aesthetic: rather, there was a concerted effort - the filming in New Zealand and the hiring of Weta being two of its symptoms rather than its causes - to model the show on the live-action films. Nevertheless, dispensing with Weta for Season Two COULD keep this issue at bay.
All the same, its clear that if Weta was indeed substituted by another studio, as is likely the case, that studio did their darndest to emulate Weta's style, and in some respects harkened even more heavy-handedly to the style of the New Line films. Perhaps it is a case of, having moved out of New Zealand, wanting to still show they "got it" and overdoing it? The same trend is evident in the digital splicing of Kiwi landscapes into the British countryside, and in the trailer's shameless appropriation of beats (but not lines, presumably with New Line cracking the whip on that end) from the live-action films.
All the same, Season Two and on could have been another noteworthy "notch" in Weta's enviable Tolkien belt, which only in this year also entails Tales of the Shire and The War of the Rohirrim. It would have been a good preparation for their forthcoming involvement in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. I do regret, specifically, that they probably didn't get a crack at the weapons of the Eregion Elves: a new Elven culture they had not touched before, unless some of the designs we see were made for Season One and not shown therein.
Beyond that, its useful to keep the same team in place in the interest of season-to-season continuity. Nevertheless, the teaser shows a greater emphasis on such continuity that I had previously believed they would go for. Some early scenes seem to be picking up immediately from the end of Season One, with Galadriel and Elrond - still in the same costumes - catch up to Gil-galad's convoy back on the same Lindon set. Even in other scenes, many of the Numenorean extras seem to be in the same clothes, and while the green Eregion guards got a lot of attention in the teaser, they actually already appeared in season one.
A tale of two Narsils, both by Weta but for different companies.
As a side-note, it may well be that the Weta designers felt limited by the lega situation surrounding Season One, which required them to recreate different versions of some of their most celebrated props, namely a new, subtly redesigned Narsil. Sir Richard Taylor, in the above interview, said he didn't work on the series because he "didn't feel I had anything new to contribute to the television series." This is curious since he had by then already jumped onboard The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, and in an appearance only shortly thereafter, said of the project that "there's so much that's fresh and exciting." This in spite of the fact that, at first blush, Rohirrim would seem to offer far less by way of new design opportunities than did Rings of Power.
In truth, not all of Weta's work on Season One was up to their otherwise-inimitable standards: I'm reminded of a making-of featurette about the making of Orcrist, which required a lot of back and forth between the Weta designers and Sir Peter Jackson. Says designer Paul Tobin: "A lot of our designs were falling into 'I've seen it with Glamdring, I've seen it with Sting." An even more egregious example is for Shadow of Mordor, where a design of an armoured Celebrimbor is almost one-for-one of a design for an armoured Thranduil, a year or two prior by the same artist, although in fairness both designs went unused.
I don't want to imply that the showrunners weren't equally forthright in their design process: from listening to John Howe, there was certainly a lot of back-and-forth with his concept art. Even in examing Weta's work its clear that in the case of some of the designs - namely, the Elven Zweihanders, which previously appeared in some Howe concept art - the showrunners came to Weta with their own ideas, rather than just giving them free reign.
Nevertheless, it does seem that in a couple of instances, Weta were allowed (perhaps on purpose?) to essentially recycle some old designs: almost all the Dwarven and many of the Silvan and Orc designs are like this. Its cool that Weta got to imagine what Durin's legendary Ax looked like, but they basically took a design for an ax that Dwalin finds in the Erebor armoury and made a subtle variation on it. The Mystics' weapons also betray a similarity, but rather to Weta's work on James Cameron's Avatar!
Even less appropriately, a spear designed for the Lindon Elves but not seen in Season One, seems derivative not of previous High-Elven designs, but off of the designs for the Woodland Realm, which would have been the freshest in the memory of the Weta designers. The main difference is the Woodland design abstracts the tree-branch shapes to avoid them seeming, to quote Keller, "too fairytale." Worst still, the Numenorean cutlasses (seen briefly at Elendil's side prior to his promotion) are inappropriately akin to the Laketown swords (again, a design surely fresh on the designers' minds) of all things!
Corporate needs you to find the differences between this picture, and this picture...[aside]: They're the same picture.
In other cases, the similarities are more abstract and work quite well: both Aranruth and the Elven broadswords - wielded by Galadriel to the Battle of the Southlands and carried by Theo into Season Two but also also brandished by the prologue Elves - feature a similar leaf-like profile to the blade: they would be more-or-less contemporaries of Glamdring, which has a similar shape. Medhor carries (but sadly doesn't get to use) a Silvan version of the Elven Great-sword from the Fellowship prologue.
Elsewhere in the film industry, of course, companies like Lucasfilm had turned this kind "reuse, reduce, recycle" mentality into a usual practice, although usually with unused designs, a-la the Shadow of Mordor example: discarded McQuarrie and Cantwell artwork from the 1975 thus ended-up in Star Was projects all the way between 1978 and 2023, where it started feeling increasingly like someone picking through the carcass of a dead movie.
In a limited extent, however, it is a useful device in terms of "tapping" into the same, initial sensibility, and as such its been used in Tolkien projects before: The White Council chamber was part of some early Rivendell designs, and similar practices are deployed in Rohirrim and are sure to be used in The Hunt for Gollum. In all these examples, however, it didn't normally involve jumping through the legal hoops that The Rings of Power had to leap through.
Neverthelss, there are a great many illustrious designs - from Elendil's Captain sword and Finrod's Dagger, through Feanor's Hammer and Dramborleg (the first Elven hammer and axe in Weta's output) to Aranruth and Medhor's Silvan Great-Sword - all represent wortwhile entries in Weta's oeuvre, and some of the best designs in the whole of the show thus far. Still, it wasn't in vain, being that several such key props are going to stay the distance in the show.

2024.05.20 00:32 EmptyPlankton7744 My mom's acting nuts

Please Help Us
Me and my sister don't know what to do about our mom .
Backstory: My mom and dad have been married for 50 years. I'm 25 my sister is 35 we all live under the same roof. During pandemic COVID my mom lost her Mom (aka my grandma). She lost her brother due to liver failure. , lost our grand aunt and also our grand uncle all in the span of 2020-2021. ... Everything was ok my mom was grieving and seemed more torn over the loss of her brother. My mom's a social worker and has a high stress job .
Now 2024. She had reconnected with an old friend after finding out she had breast cancer , (let's call her Lena) who is from back in our country of origin . That old friend used to have a similar family like us. Lena was married , and had 2 sons and 1 daughter who grew up with me and my sister, Lena's Husband at the time worked with my dad at university.Lena divorced her husband after finding out he was dating his student. Lena for single for a while after divorce , and now she has a boyfriend and she is living her life so happily and tells my mom all the details. Especially being happy and a new chapter. Lenas husband was a horrible man and was mean , and horrible to his kids at times. He was a player.
My family moved to this country I'm 2010 .my parents left their friends and family behind for us to be here. My parents are lonely here tbh , they don't have a social circle here , just like a handful of people but not a circle at all. They are bored, work , home , gym, groceries. That's life been for them lately
My dad majority of my childhood for decades was an alcoholic. At home He used to drink everyday and gets drunk on weekends. To the point where in 2023 my mom told my dad if he doesn't stop she and Us (children) are going to leave him because we tried everything for him to stop. My dad has been sober for the last 10 months. He's a bit depressed and is quieter but he's doing much better imo since he quit . Apart from the drinking he is the best dad I could ask for . I'm happy he has stopped.i hope he gets out of his funk.
A few weeks ago of April 2024. my mom got tragic news that her sister who has been sick for a while died of a heart attack at home. It was very hard for my parents to hear this news. The following weekend she started telling my sister strange things, while I was away. She said she's not surprised our ex aunt cheated on her brother , she said shes burnt out from her job , she said she wants to go away for a short while to have time to herself. Saying she wants to go hotel and stay in separate rooms from my sister ( my sis was like ???) she told her that she feels stuck .Whatever it is. She's lonely. She wants to go out. She wants to 'meet new people'. It's all just nuts. Like I get it. Fine u can. But like you're hanging at the gym for hours everyday. Talking to our friends and seeking out for attention. She said alot of stuff to my sister while I was away and she panicked
Me and my sister pulled her aside a week ago and said what the hell are you doing. You dumped all this info on my sister , You're being inappropriate with our friends saying stuff like ( people's preferences for older even if they're younger doesn't matter even if they approach you) she mentioned this to one of my friends....So we confronted her and she said . Look me and your father haven't been happy for a while since the last 8 years. She said her and my dad talked about it in 2020 and wait and see....So we said okay that's fine but are you doing stuff behind him because that's not ok. She said before it even gets there she will definitely talk about it with my dad. So then we're like.....ok if you say you're okay we will not mind . We told her if she needs to go on a vacation or time off ( cuz my parents never go anywhere ) all they do is just see family ones in a while overseas. Never an actual vacatjon. So we said , hey u should try doing things together with dad. Go places, do things. She's like he never wants to . We said it's not easy since he stopped drinking so try at least with him before anything else..... We told her to talk to a therapist , she said she's talking to one of her coworkers who is one. We had our sisters birthday and she came to the club with me and our friends (first time she evercame to the club with us) it was odd but like she had fun?.
My mom also said (hey I don't wanna end up like my sister because she was in a bad marriage and loved somebody else ) and Lena was happy and had a boyfriend. Me and my sister said , dad isn't even that bad compared to these others she tried to use his drinking as an excuse. But we're like he STOPPED.
In 2023 While they went to Europe to see my cousin my mom was telling some guy hit on her while she was waiting for bus. And he asked my mom to go out for coffee. And she said yes sure but it was raining. And then he was talking to my mom . And my dad answered a question he asked. And the guy said "I'm talking to the lady" or something. And my mom just let it happen. And my dad didn't say anything. I'm like okkk????
She's been painting her nails. Doing her hair , spending hours at the gym just talking to people , my friends etc. it's just so weird. Until the point now my dad doesn't go anymore cuz she spends time there so much and just talks to others. She latches on to some of my new friends. .
Today she went to the gym at 1 o clock. It's literally 6 o clock she's not even back. What the hell do me and my sister do. It's causing me and my sister so much anxiety
It's definitely grief + mid life crisis + boring Rut marriage
What do we do .

2024.05.20 00:09 rabexc Thoughts on Resistant Starch? Significantly lower risk of non-colorectal cancers.

Hello,
Given a family history of stomach cancer, having Lynch Syndrome based on PMS2, my doctor (from a research institute) passed on a link to this paper: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9433960/
In short, they had half of their Lynch Syndrome patients take 30g a day of Resistant Starch (RS), and after a couple years as part of CAPP2 (the same study about aspirin) they observed "significantly lower risk of non–colorectal cancer LS cancers, especially upper GI cancers". 29 non-colorectal cancers for patients taking RS, vs 55.
The RS blend in their study was 15g Novelose 240 (an RS2 starch) + 15g Novelose 330 (an RS3 starch) daily.
Is anyone here taking Resistant Starch daily? Where do you buy it? Which brand?
I have a few problems here:
  1. So far, I could not find a shop / store front where to buy Novelose. Only in bulk, only b2b.
  2. So far, I could not find a supplement or product I can buy that contains RS2 and RS3 starches in roughly a 50% blend, which is what was used in the study. Only a long list of very doubtful products in terms of what's in there exactly.
So, anyone taking RS? How?

2024.05.19 23:58 IZ7K Motorcycle Accident - Seeking Legal Advice on How to Proceed

I was recently involved in a motorcycle accident in Bristol and would appreciate some legal advice on how to handle the situation. I was enjoying the sunny weather, riding my CB125F before trading it in for a new CB500 Hornet. At a traffic light junction where I had the green light, a driver in a pearlescent purple VW Golf turned right into me without using his indicator. I slammed on the brakes, locked my front wheel, and fell to the ground.
Luckily, I didn't sustain any injuries, although I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt (I know, it was dumb). My Knox gloves took most of the damage. The driver, a young lad, called his dad, who came to the scene and provided me with their insurance details. I told him I would prefer not to involve insurance and deal with the matter privately.
My bike suffered the following damage:
  1. Cracked clutch lever
  2. Left foot lever bent up
  3. Cosmetic damage to the front end
I have photos of the other driver's license plate and their insurance details. However, I didn't record the driver apologizing, take witness details, or capture more photos of the scene, like skid marks. I just stood there frozen and let it happen.
I am due to receive my one-year No Claims Bonus (NCB) in November, which I need to lower my premiums. My current insurer is allowing me to change the vehicle on my policy to a CB500F without affecting my NCB. Many other providers turned me down and didn't even give me a quote because of "the details I gave."
Before the accident, I had a parts trade agreement with a dealership, and they quoted £1,800 for my bike (which I believe was a total shafting for a 2021 MY 125F in showroom condition with 2,000 miles, but I accepted it for a smooth buy and sell). Now that the bike has been damaged, I'm unsure how to proceed.
My questions are:
  1. Should I inform my insurance company about the accident, or should I take my bike to a garage for a quote and then send it to the other party for payment?
  2. If I choose to deal with the matter privately, could I use the money from the other party to fix the bike myself (I'm a novice but have started building up a motorcycle toolset) and then sell it privately at a later date? Am I underestimating the potential costs?
  3. Would it be wiser to involve my insurance company or the other party's insurer in this case?
  4. What are the potential legal implications of dealing with this matter privately vs. involving insurance companies?
Any advice on the best course of action would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help!

2024.05.19 23:56 taclovitch RBC Brooklyn Half — Missed PR, Wrongly Estimated Fitness, and Learning The Hard Way

I just finished the RBC Brooklyn Half yesterday, after a 12-week training program. I’d built up a lot of expectations for the race, for a whole host of interrelated reason (that I’ll unpack in the body of this thing); all those expectations, unfortunately, caused me to get carried away, and made my experience of the race overall 1) unenjoyable while I was running and 2) disappointing after I finished.
I’m a teacher, and I frequently relay this paraphrasing of a Confucius quote to my kids: “We can either learn how to act by imagining consequences and reflecting, which is best; or by watching others make mistakes, which is hard (though not for us). The most difficult way to learn is through experience, but if that’s what it takes, then that’s what it takes.” One of my top-upvoted comments of all time is in this sub, telling people to not ruin a race for themselves by over-fixating on time-goals at the expense of enjoying their race.
And yet—

Race Information

Goals

Goal Description Completed?
A Sub or Equal 1:32 No
B Sub 1:35 No
C Finally Pace Myself Properly No

Splits

Split Pace Time
5k 7:04 21:55
10k 7:20 44:42
15k 7:12 1:07:03
20k 8:23 1:33:03
Finish 7:55 1:38:2X

Background Context

I started running in Oct of ‘22, and caught the bug. I ran a half in April of ‘23 in 1:47, and loved the distance. I built base over the summer to ~30-35 mpw, and then trained for the Philly Half in Nov of ‘23. Ended up getting a 1:38:0X in that race, which was really exciting. More exciting was that I approximately even-split that race — my second half took ~30 seconds longer than the first. I left that race feeling exactly how I wanted to — like a washcloth wrung out completely. I felt like that race & time represented the absolute best of my ability, given my current level of fitness; and I felt like I tried my best the whole way through.
Last important piece of context re: diagnosing this race’s disappointment: between Oct of ‘22 and Nov ‘23 I went from ~240 lbs avg to ~195 lbs average. My lowest weight dipped to the high 180s, but I stabilized around 190 pretty quickly.

Training

I used Runna to train for Philly and really enjoyed the experience. My organizational skills are pretty lacking, and I spend 100% of them in other areas of my life — so I enjoy using an app that offloads some of that cognitive lift for me, fully worth the sub during training blocks.
As far as milage, I managed:
Week Miles (Ran / Goal)
1 25 / 33 mi mi (missed 2 runs from travel)
2 32 / 36 mi (missed 1 run b/c travel)
3 38 /38 mi
4 12 / 20 mi (deload, missed 2 runs from illness)
5 28 / 38 mi (missed 2 runs from illness carried over from previous week)
6 40 / 40 mi
7 43 / 43 mi
8 23 / 23 mi
9 50 / 43 mi (extended 2 easy runs by ~3 miles apiece)
10 43 / 40 mi
11 29 / 35 mi (missed 1 run due to illness)
12 23 / 23 mi (including race).
As I’m sure you can already see, I missed a meaningful amount of runs due to illness/other life interruption. Concurrent with all this is the fact that my wife is due with our 2nd child in, well, like a week and a half from now; so a lot of the missed runs in weeks 1-5 also reflect a dramatic net increase in my responsibilities b/c of my wife feeling out of it / not being able to get as much done as normal (no shade at all; she’s literally building a new human that wasn’t there before). Overall I got ~92% of all milage done, running 388 miles during these 12 weeks. Mistake #1: I didn’t adjust my time goals in light of missing workouts; I figured if I just worked harder to “catch up,” I would be fine.
The plan included 2 quality sessions a week — 1 tempo run and 1 interval session, and the weekend long run frequently had pace thrown in. I vastly prefer tempo to interval running — personally, I cite being ~200 lbs as the reason. Once I get going, it’s easy to keep going, but frequent stops & starts just burn energy that I can’t afford to lose. Mistake #2: as I trained, my weight went from the high 190s to the high 200s, and I raced at ~207 lbs. I wasn’t consistent w/ nutrition during training, and the associated stress of my job, as well as parenting & chores usually handled by 2 people being done mostly by me — I often used lil’ snacks as a quick dopamine fix (adhd heads out there, you know what I’m talking about.)

Pre-Race

I wasn’t sure I’d be able to run the race in the first place — my first daughter (now 7) was born at 36 weeks, and I anticipated my second needing the same (choleostasis enjoyers, rise up). Instead, though, this baby seems primed to go the distance — so I got equal parts excited and nervous to be able to deliver on all my training.
I’d cut my time by 9 minutes from my first to the second half, and tried to be conservative in aiming to cut ~5 minutes between these cycles — so I aimed to run 7:00-7:05 for the race, dipping into the 6:55s if I felt good at the end of the race, and set my A goal for 1:32, and my B goal for 1:35. Mistake #3: I didn’t have any serious qualitative goals, and my quant goals were made too far in advance to be realistic. I also wasn’t proactive in adjusting my goals based on how training was going — despite advocating for that same thing in posts on this sub.
Man, it’s so easy to say smart things, and so hard to actually do them.
About 10 days before my race, I came down with a cough thing that sapped a bit of my energy. Kept me up at night, and sapped ~10-15% of my energy on a given day. The Wednesday before my race I asked my wife, “Do you think 3 days is enough for me to be back at 100%?” And I want to say to other runners out there: if you’re having to ask that question, go ahead and adjust your goals. We’ll tag that as Mistake #4.

The Race

Gorgeous morning. I live ~1.5 miles from the race start, so I walked over to Franklin and then jogged the remaining ~1 mile to the start as a warmup. Skipped bag dropoff for the same reason I don’t like checking bags while flying, did a quick pee (quick pee, long portapotty wait time), and went over to the corral.
My whole “thing” as a runner is that I’m deceptively fast — that is, that I’m most commonly the least-fit looking person out of the people running equivalent paces to myself. When I started running, that gave me a bit of imposter syndrome; any more, I draw on it for motivation. So as I was waiting in Corral C to start, I realized I felt a lot of pressure — to be able to deliver on being fast, to prove that I’m actually fit, whatever. No one outside of myself cares, obviously. But that’s now how this stuff works.

The First 10k — Would’ve Been Great If This Was a 10k

My pacing plan was as follows: don’t exceed 7:00 pace at any point in the first 7 miles; aim for ~7:30-7:45 going up Prospect Park’s big hill; use the downhill at 10k to catch my breath; and use the last 7 miles down Ocean Ave to winch down on speed if I was feeling good, or just hold around 7:05 if I was spent.
I was able to hit the first half of this plan pretty well, as my splits up top suggest. But I could tell, starting as I ran around GAP and into the park, that I was working too hard — the effort I was expending was too much. As I reflect on it now, I realize I was probably in ~1:35 shape (~7:15 splits); but I stubbornly refused to drop down in pace. I noticed my heart rate was in the high 170s as I ran through Prospect Park, where my HM pace usually puts me at 165 on the dot. I tried to tell myself it was race excitement + caffeine. [Arrested Development Narrator Voice: It wasn’t.]
I hit the 10k mark at 45 minutes pretty much on the dot. My 10k PR is 44:0-something. This is when I realized my pacing was probably a bit on the screwed side. I’m fairly capable with distance, and am better at medium-exertion-long-distance than I am at hard-exertion-short-distance (my 10k predicts a slightly better 5k time than I currently race). I thought to myself: “Well, you can always just drop down a bit and hold. What’s the worst that can happen?”

The Worst That Can Happen: AKA You’ll Feel Pretty Silly When You Try to Tell Your 38.5 Week Pregnant Wife That Your Last 6 Miles Were Quote “Unimaginable Suffering” And It “Felt Like It Would Never End”

I had been under the impression that Ocean Ave would be a “gentle downhill,” but had never run it prior to the race. This, dear reader, is a lie. Somehow, the last 6 miles of the race are entirely uphill; or at least, that is what it’ll feel like if you go out 5% over your current level of fitness.
The sun really started to get to me; and while I’d had water & nutrition, my gut wasn’t enjoying it, and I didn’t feel energized or like any second wind was coming. I specifically remember that Mile 9 felt like it took 20 minutes to finish; the last 5k of the race simply wouldn’t arrive.
I pulled off to the side to slow down; first to 7:30, then 7:45, then 8:00, with no respite. My legs were heavy despite feeling fueled — I was just dyin’ out there. My wife had been texting encouragement during the race, and I managed to send her back from my watch at mile 9 “all goals are now out the window,” and it was just about finishing — first, to finish without walking. But I took 2 30-second walk breaks when the fatigue felt unendurable — pulling off to the side and counting down from 30, while getting passed.
That was another feature of the race that made it so challenging — that same dynamic of “being deceptively fast” that I mentioned above came back to bite me, as I got passed continuously by people who’d raced their fitness, rather than their goals, in the first half of the race. That demoralized feeling was incredibly difficult to handle. I hadn’t, before today, understood why someone would quit a race; and now, even though I didn’t quit, I get it.
As I passed mile 11, I realized that, while my initial goal was fully out the window, I could still PB the race, even though my pace between miles 9 and 11 was more than a minute off my goal pace; I’d just need to hold approximately 8:00 pace, and I’d be right up against my prior PB. That didn’t make anything any easier, but it did make me feel like the suffering had a point.
Got an encouraging text from my wife, found some other folks at ~8:00 pace, and tried to lock into that pace next to them. And then I just sort of suffered to the finish line. I don’t know what the views looked like; I’m not sure what the race atmosphere was like. I wish I’d paced myself better so I could have experienced that fully.

Post-Race: Why Don’t They Tell You That You Have to Walk Up Stairs To Get Out of Cyclone Stadium BEFORE You Go Into the Stadium?

Got medal, got water. Drank about 5 consecutive cups of water, and then exited the boardwalk. Texted my wife that it’d been really hard but I finished, and right as I did, a critical mass of finishers arrived such that cell service got knocked out for everyone. Thus began the Long Night of The Soul for me at Cyclone stadium.
I walked in, walked around, realized there wasn’t anything I wanted to do in there, and then tried to go back out; at which point I was told “Exit is out that way,” and I said, “I can’t just go back out? I gotta go upstairs to leave, after running a race? That’s the rule?” The guy who told me didn’t deserve my sass; and I deserved to not go up stairs. Oh well.
I managed to get up the stairs without cramping up (though it was close). I went and looked out over Surf Ave, at everyone walking to and from the race, and just got to sit with my thoughts for a bit. I got myself a bit choked up & had a very dignified little cry at this realization, which I think does fully distill my feelings about the race: “I feel like I tried my hardest, but I don’t feel like I did my best.” I think that we often treat those two statements like they’re interchangeable, but there’s actually a bit of space between those ideas, and my race fell into the gap between them. I both tried very hard the entire time, but also, I could have done a better job pacing myself and picking target times. That disappointment is rough.

To Do Better Next Time

So to conclude this whole long sad love letter to learning: some takeaways, ranked from Most Transferrable (re: life skills) to Most Specific.
  1. Actively listen to ya dang body, fool
Self-explanatory: by setting a goat at the outset of training, and then sort of driving toward it without respect for a lot of recently-added stressors in my life, I didn’t end up running any faster — I just made the running I did do kind of miserable. Next time I intend to use HR & Effort (together!) as a better indication of the pace my body feels comfortable running during the race. We say so much “Trust the taper,” and I think here I’d benefit from reminding myself, “… buuuut the taper doesn’t make impossible things possible.”
  1. Don’t invest so heavily in the quant goal
I got very invested in how proud I would be if I managed to achieve the goal, and that forward-projecting is part of what caused me to overshoot the goal in the first place. Next time around I want to have a process goal to the tune of “Enjoy the race while trying to wring out your body like a washcloth.” Or something; I have time to plan.
  1. Lose 15-20 pounds.
I’m 5’9; I’m strong and I’m heavy. My running has kind of been those two vectors pointing against each other the whole time. But I think I’m at the point where, if I want to be able to sustain 7:00 speeds for more than a 10k, I need to lose some of the excess weight I’m holding onto. I could also do strength training, but I’ve got a baby on the way; heart tells me that getting 7-10% lighter will be a lot easier than getting 7-10% stronger.
So that was training, goals, and next steps. Hopefully, by seeing my mistakes, you’ll be able to avoid them yourself in the future. Hopefully!

2024.05.19 23:54 jaydalogar Messaged my first gf after 10 years apart, this is how it went. What should I do? 32M 31F

Long story so please bear with me
I was with my first love for 3 and a bit years, we met in late 2010 before we broke up 10 years ago in early 2014. We were young and in our early 20s back then, things just fizzled out.
I've always thought about her but eventually we went our separate ways, she got in to a relationship with another guy after me for a few years but eventually he ended up cheating on her, this was around 2017.
After her breakup in 2017 I confessed my feelings for her but we didn't go anywhere with it as she was still healing so I told her I need to cut her off at the point because I told her I was struggling to be just friends with her, to which she said that she was heartbroken that's it come to us parting ways. But we wished each other well and went our separate ways. I was really at my lowest at that point but have come a really long way since in terms of having a successful career and have improved a lot financially and mentally.
At the start of 2019, she did add me on social media but she didn't say anything to me so a few days later I ended up deleting her because I realised I still wasn't over her, I regretted deleting her afterwards.
At the end of 2019 I heard that she was engaged, she ended up getting married but then I heard she got divorced around over 2 years ago. A few monthds ago I found out that the reason for her divorce was because her husband cheated on her and was abusive towards her. They got divorced around early 2022. Her ex husband is already engaged and due to get married again this summer.
As for me I did get in to another relationship with someone else but I was also cheated on so I have been single for a few years now, I have been evolving in my career and proud of how far I've come and have recently started a new chapter in my career. I considered getting in touch with her last year but I noticed that she had cut off a lot of people from her social media so I wasnt too sure how she'd react to me adding her, I thought she'd reject me seen as she's cutting off a lot of people.
So around 3 months ago I took the plunge seen as I had nothing to lose and sent her a request on instagram, and she had accepted and also followed me back. She's been viewing my stories and a month ago I posted a life quote on my story which she liked, I haven't spoke to her yet. I posted a few pictures of myself which she hasn't liked but A few weeks ago I posted a quote on my story that said 'be the reason for someone's pain to turn into a smile', she liked that quote and also another one that I posted last week. It was my birthday a few days ago and she liked a birthday story that I posted on instagram.
I'm assuming she is single but not entirely sure. I added her 3 months ago but now she has deleted me, I was confused because she only liked one of my stories few days prior. At the time of her deletion, i was on holiday performing umrah. I would have liked to see if there was future for us but don't think she's interested now, i have messaged her after she deleted me saying 'Hi, hope your well. I probably should have said something a long time ago but I didn't, my fault. I've been praying for you, today I realise I've been deleted anyways I hope your keeping happy and healthy'. She replied saying 'Hey I'm good thanks hope you are too, that is kind of you, I didn't expect this kind of message'.
I didn't really know what to say back to her, I still don't understand why she deleted me even though days before she was showing an interest in my stories before and now she's deleted me. I just replied saying 'that's good. Sorry for catching you off guard with it, I wanted to reach out to you earlier. I'm glad your doing well though' and then she has replied back saying 'can I ask why?' I replied back saying 'It's been on my mind for a while to get back in touch with you, I didn't add you for no reason. But we don't need to if it's not something your comfortable with'. She then sent a long message as follows: 'You don’t make me feel uncomfortable. I have thought about you over the years and wished you well. I am really happy that you have also been called to do umrah and i hope it changes your life the same way it did mine. I removed you because you have my ex and his family on your instagram and I removed everyone who has any contact with them. You will have heard that I was married there for a short period of time but it was hell and now I’m out of it I don’t want them knowing anything about my life, so I removed everyone who has any link with them. I didn’t realise till that day that you did. It was nothing to do with you personally.' .
Im not actually friends with her ex husband as he is just someone that lives nearby to me and we have never spoken so I replied with this: 'I'm sorry that you had to go through that, I hope your okay and I pray god brings you ease. I wouldn't exactly say I have anything to do with them personally though, only thing I know about them is that they're from my area too. It makes sense now and it's understandable why you did that.'
She replied back again saying 'I'm great, God is the best of planners and it was the best thing for me. Even so, I removed everyone who had us both so sorry about that' and to which I replied 'That's fair enough, I'm glad to hear your doing well though and that your at peace now. That's what matters most'. She then asked 'how have you been, what's new with you?' I replied saying 'I'm not too bad thanks, life's changed a lot since we last spoke so there's quite a lot that's new lol'. after that we were speaking generally about the holiday that I'm currently on and what to do as she has been here before too and she also asked how long I'm there for and she asked who ive gone with and how long im on holiday for, it was in general a short and civilised conversation and the conversation happened whilst i was still deleted.
Towards the end of the conversation she said 'well i hope you have a lovely time 😊' and i replied with thank you and asked her when she was on holiday here, she replied saying that she went last November and the year before so then i replied saying 'oh nice, its good to go often. Need to make it a yearly thing' She ended the conversation 12 nights ago by liking that last message i sent, I don't know if she plans to message me again, What are the chances that she'll message me even if we don't follow each other on instagram anymore.
I am slightly anxious that she won't message me after this due to her deleting me because her ex is on my Instagram. Was thinking of just giving her space for a few more days, then deleting her ex and requesting her back in around in a few days bear in mind she deleted me 2 weeks ago and we havent spoken in 12 days. In the meantime i have been removing a lot of meaningless connections from my instagram and i will be removing her ex and his family too, i have also noticed that her number of following has also decreased as she has also been cutting down on the number of connections she has. I blame myself for this situation because I had the opportunity to delete her ex and his family a few months ago as I don't even speak to them, had I done that then she wouldn't have deleted me. Its been 2 weeks, should i take action or give her space?

2024.05.19 23:44 ApprehensiveCut176 Can I negotiate a 'whistleblower' reward for fraud against a state funded program?

I'll keep this short. I was a well-qualified recipient of a voucher from my state for an e-bike. The approved retailer I used offered the make and model e-bike I researched and wanted. Went down to the store locally and they had it in stock. Great. They tell me it'll be ~~ $200 out of pocket to cover the difference between the voucher value, and full value of the bike. Initially I'm thinking THAT does not sound right, but maybe I misunderstood something. I basically won out a lottery for one of these voucher and waited so long that I may as well scruff together the couple hundred bucks.
They verify my voucher to make sure it's legit (takes a couple days.) Everything comes back great. Problem is, I come in the day I'm supposed to sign the paperwork and guess what... the floor model is marked down... EVEN MORE than what I thought was the original discrepancy between sticker price and the quoted price.
I immediately bring this to their attention and they spew some bullshit about protecting their investment and they can't reduce the price everytime the manufacturer does blah blah blah. I think on it a bit. and honestly at this point I just want the bike. Time is running out on the redemption deadline and I was lucky to have found a retailer with the exact bike model I wanted and even in the color I wanted. I went through with it.
Fast forward 6 months, and I stumble upon a post in my state's sub where another user has a very similar experience from the exact retailer. He made his admission in the thread as the topic of convo was a local news site applauding THIS RETAILER as having redeemed far and away the most vouchers from this program. In fact they serviced the MAJORITY of all vouchers in the state at their single location.
To put things in to context: there was only about a $200 difference between the voucher and final price on my end. However, there was about a $350 difference between MSRP and the voucher- meaning if the voucher were a (gift card, for instance,) the difference would have been about $550 for the bike.
Upon further review, the voucher clearly states the going price is the official real-time MSRP. The shop knew, or should have known this. Their deliberate actions suggest this was done intentionally and in concert amongst the employees.
I'm going to report this to the state one way or another. How can I put myself in a better situation and negotiate a whistleblower reward?

2024.05.19 23:43 DirtyGoldGames A Failed Kickstarter. What I’ve Learned and What’s Next?

Some of you might know me here. I have posted about the creation of the tabletop game Goblin Auction. This post is meant to be an overview of what I did to create my game, market it and start a Kickstarter for it. Spoiler alert, the Kickstarter did not reach its funding goal and I will also go into what I learned, what I would do instead and what is next for my specific project. I hope you can glean something from my experience if you are also going to games yourself and thinking about self-publishing.
I worked on the creation and marketing of Goblin Auction from about August 2023 to April 2024. That is about 8 to 9 months of really putting in the hours and being serious about game creation. I started as anyone should. Some basic printed cards and components and just playing the games with friends on a regular basis. I honed the project to a point where I had the basic idea of what I was going for and I could move on to the art. (Note: I understood that the game would likely go through many changes before the end. This may require me to redo art or change some significant things, but for personal motivation, starting the art and getting some semblance of what the final game would look like was important to me. Also, starting art and putting out posts can start accruing more attention than just a text post about a game’s creation.)
I have the luxury (or maybe not haha) of being an artist and trained in creating illustration. I didn’t have to pay for someone to design my game for me so the majority of the time spent on the game was spent with me drawing. Art, in my opinion, is the best way to market your game. A good looking and polished product is always better than a good concept in text format, although preferably you’d want both. With drawings I was able to start posting about my game. I felt like this was the best course of marketing for the project initially that costs no money and I could record speed art timelapses and post progress in stages to get feedback from a growing community of people.
Throughout this process, I was posting on mainly Reddit and Instagram. I had a YouTube and posted sometimes to it but not often and everything was mainly art. Retrospectively, I think what would have been a better idea was creating a dev log of how the game is going, what part of the process I am at, showing off the game’s core mechanics and new abilities and combos I was working on. It would give people a better sense for the game’s mechanics beyond just the flashy art as I found that, towards the end, the main thing that I didn’t feel like I conveyed well was how the game was played.
I eventually tried to start branching to new platforms. The one I really liked and found the most value from was Discord. I set up a server, just a general chat and a voice channel and started getting people actually interested in the game interacting there. I think what I wish I would’ve done is started seeking out as many communities that already had my target audience, tabletop gamers, and mingled there more. I also tried to establish myself on BoardGameGeek, but I found it unnecessarily un-user friendly. I have heard from many people that it is the hub for many people when it comes to tabletop gamers, but it was unnecessarily complicated to create a game page and designer page and even understand what the best course was when it came to even using it, so I abandoned it altogether. Not sure if that was the right move and I do think that it may be something I need to really crack down on and understand when moving forwards.
Then came finding a quote and the Kickstarter. I found a quote from Panda Game Manufacturing for about $8000 for 2000 units with the idea that international shipping would cost $2000 and I personally added a buffer of $2000 to be safe for a total of $12,000. In hindsight, this was wayy too high. I saw big projects get funded and assumed if I had a good product and did my job, that it would be enough to fund. And I still think this was possible, but I had to do a lot more advertising wise to get over that hump (advertising is not my strong suit, so admittedly this was the hardest learning curve I had to overcome). Anyways, long story short, the Kickstarter didn’t get funded, reaching only about 29% of the final goal, which I will emphasize is a LOT and I am very grateful for everyone who did actually contribute and sorry that the full vision wasn’t realized into a product.
So, what have I learned?
And what’s next for Goblin Auction?
I have heard that a failed Kickstarter is the worst outcome for up and coming games due to image and perception of the game. I personally take it as a big lesson and don’t have any plans of giving up just because my first try didn’t go as I wanted.
For Goblin Auction, the game is not dead to me. It just needs more work. More tiers for Kickstarter than just “Base Game”. For the second launch I will be creating new expansions. An Orc expansion that allows for PvP combat, and a Gremlin expansion that allows for co-op gameplay and a variant Hut deck that allows for different decisions when getting victory points to win the game. I would create all this before re-releasing as well as seeing about trinkets and ad-ons to give backers better options and more to have a more well-rounded Kickstarter experience. This also includes those How to Play and explanation videos that I had been avoiding before.
For me personally, though, these new expansions won’t be immediate. I will take my time in creating something that truly is worth investing money into, like was my mindset with the original base game of Goblin Auction. I also will not solely focus on Goblin Auction and pursue some other game ideas that I have had for a while. This is all happening outside of my day job, so it definitely is going to be a long process, but I am truly excited to show off the ideas I have had, and to make more games!
Thank you for those who have followed my journey so far and stick around for the future of Dirty Gold Games!
