Micona Hate and How to fix it.

We all know Micona Zol, the head of the Second year. Known for her Godspeed and Chest size and having a crazy Love for Marie Azami.
We hated her for a few following reasons
  1. She was annoying and persistent personality
  2. She's a Psycho Lesbian, and not the good kind (matter of fact is there a good kind)
  3. She keeps bullying Lloyd even though Lloyd tried his best to be nice.
  4. She ruins things all for her twisted love of Marie
  5. Her demon powers only magnified her bad traits even more
  6. She's like Selma and Alka expect they had their more decent moments
https://preview.redd.it/krm08pstay0d1.png?width=521&format=png&auto=webp&s=373e272c10c2cb3fbab1b5c3ee7819ca3d0ab7f7
How I would have fixed Micona
  1. Make Micona more involved in the story besides being a Comic Relief.
  2. Introduce her and the Second years
  3. She and Marie are friends with each other, showing a positive relationship
  4. Make her and Lloyd more friendly with each other with Micona acting sort of like a mentor for Lloyd helping give her more confidence
  5. Give her more of a Straight man role along with Marie and Alka.
  6. Have her Treant Demon powers still expect now she can control them.
  7. Give her some funny gags in the story involving the outlandish things Lloyd does and her chest being mentioned by Characters
  8. Have her interact with the other characters just for fun.
  9. Introduce her home life more, have Micona be a Nobleman of sorts.
  10. Introduce some of her hobbies besides being a peeping tom, like what she likes and dislikes.
  11. Have her and the other girls still give their lowest opinions on Allan
https://preview.redd.it/d80sfv8i7y0d1.png?width=521&format=png&auto=webp&s=f2d0527ebaaadd62705a0e94969d696c6c090425
and this is the Biggest stretch but have Micona become part of Lloyd's Harem, I know its a bit of stretch and some might not want it but please hear me out.
  1. Micona develops Feelings for Lloyd after saving her from her Treant Possession
  2. She blushes whenever he does something amazing or nice in front of her
  3. the other second years give her some encouragement to go after him and give Micona suggestions.
  4. She gets Jealous as well.
  5. She invites Lloyd to her House, which sparks the other girls to spy on them.
  6. She thanks Lloyd by kissing him on the cheek, making blush and earning the girl's fury as well.
  7. Thinks Adult Lloyd is Hot and attempts to find the grown-up rune again.
and even if she was the same as was in the Light novels and the Manga, I figure she find herself unworthy of Lloyd's feelings because she feels guilty of how she treated her. only to gain encouragement from Selen about how Lloyd feels about others not for their past but how they are in the future.
Anyway that's how I would fix Micona, what do you guys think

2024.05.17 09:33 Ti3Ri0N Don’t hate on the last episodes of YS (SPOILERS FOR S7 EP 13, 14)

Ok I understand that closure was lacking but it wasn’t. Hear me out Ik Young Sheldon isn’t just focused on Sheldon but now we know it is about his autobiography. Now I think the reason why Missy, Mary, and Mew-maw didn’t really have closure is because their story isn’t finished, it probably will continue in the Georgie and Mandy show, because if you guys watched TBBT remember Georgie said he had to take care of Missy and Mary after Sheldon left for college so they definitely will have appearances to finish off their stories. But back to Young Sheldon it’s suppose to wrap up Sheldon’s story because we’ve known him longer than the others we already know about his adult life ,this show was about his early life so what I’m trying to say is look past the lack of closure for the others because that episode is the closure for Sheldon which means we get more of the others which I’m very VERY excited for.

2024.05.17 08:30 JamalCripp644 The finale sucked

The funeral episode was good (minus the fact that Georgie barely had a reaction to his dads death) but the final episode was horrible. Georgie had like 2 scenes in the final episode, but I guess that’s fine since he’s having a spin off but Missy, Memaw, the younger Sheldon and Mary won’t be in that spin off and their character arcs weren’t complete. Sheldon just left so suddenly, Missy was just left in the middle of a story that started on the penultimate episode, Mary was just left off as a crazy lady and Memaws whole character arc from the whole show was never complete. There was no emotional goodbye from any of the characters and it would have been so simple to include one, just have the whole family drop Sheldon off at the airport. There was 10 minutes of older Sheldon and his wife that contributed nothing to the story, if you wanted Jim Parsons to have an on screen scene just have the scene where he’s walking around the house, there was no point in wasting a third of the finale on them they already had their goodbyes. The final season felt rushed and they could have easily squeezed another season or 2, there was like a month time jump each episode, maybe do a whole season after George died since all the repercussions of that death were rushed and left unfinished.

2024.05.17 07:04 shadowlarx To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), A Time to Kill (1996)

To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), A Time to Kill (1996)
Order in the subreddit! Today’s theme is legal dramas.

To Kill A Mockingbird

Young Louise “Scout” Finch lives in rural Alabama with her brother, Jem, and her father, Atticus (Gregory Peck), a lawyer who often defends poor farmers. Her life is relatively happy, spending most of her time trying to catch a glimpse of her reclusive neighbor Boo Radley (Robert Duvall), but she is no stranger to the prevalent racism in the town, a problem that is exacerbated when Atticus is called upon to defend local black man Tom Robinson when he is accused of raping a young white woman.
This is still such a powerful movie and Gregory Peck plays the Atticus Finch role brilliantly, perfectly balancing between passionate advocate for his clients and devoted father to his children. Robert Duvall, in his film debut, gives a simple, understated performance as the shy Radley.

A Time to Kill

When his daughter, Tanya, is raped and beaten by a pair of rednecks, working father Carl Lee Hailey (Samuel L. Jackson) takes matters into his own hands and kills her attackers in court. Now on trial for their murder, he hires young attorney Jake Brigance (Matthew McConaughey) to defend him. Jake, still a relatively inexperienced lawyer, calls upon help from his mentor (Donald Sutherland), his divorce attorney best friend (Oliver Platt) and a law student (Sandra Bullock). Meanwhile, elements in the town, particularly the brother of one of the victims (Kiefer Sutherland) intend to see Carl Lee die along with anyone who tries to help him.
It’s an irony that the same director is responsible for one of my favorite and one of my least favorite films. Where Joel Schumacher flopped with his Batman movies, he shone on this one. This is, without a doubt, one of the most star studded casts I’ve ever seen in a film but nobody feels underutilized. The story is gripping and the ending never fails to get to me.

2024.05.17 06:15 smallmanchat God that… sucked?

Like genuinely, what the fuck?
That felt so rushed, so unfinished, so unfitting to such a great show.
The funeral was like… okay? They didn’t show a lot of interactions which I wanted, didn’t show anything notable besides Mary crying and a good speech from Meemaw. They could’ve done so much more, whether it was showing different characters or even concluding side characters stories or something. But no, just bland. No heartfelt remembrance besides the aforementioned Meemaw scene. Just, pure nothingness.
The memoir one was god awful. The story felt incredibly poorly paced, it centered around Mary’s religion the entire episode like it was just a random midseason episode, when it’s literally the conclusion of the show. Why didn’t we get a heartfelt Sheldon and Missy scene? Why is Missy’s story just unfinished?
And those Adult Sheldon, just ew. He comes off as incredibly condescending and annoying, it interferes with plot a shit ton. Just awful.
Absolutely pathetic and ridiculously ending to a show I adored. So frustrating.

2024.05.17 05:49 ogfanspired The Original Woman in White?

The Original Woman in White?
There are some shots in the opening sequence of The Pilot that I think may have more significance than is immediately apparent. This is the first:
https://preview.redd.it/snkddd1urw0d1.jpg?width=683&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=24d87c3bf5ff0dc82b04c0b2ff5841b71d7a7e7a
Throughout the opening sequence, Mary is seen wearing a white nightdress. Given the first ghost hunt of the series involves a woman in white, that may not be incidental and this image of her at the top of the stairs may become important later.
Here’s another shot I keep puzzling over. When John re-enters the burning room after handing off Sam to Dean, we get a brief glimpse of Mary still pinned to the ceiling amid the flame. But, here there appears to be something hanging down from the ceiling in the middle of the room. Is that Mary’s bloody nightdress? Is she now hanging from the ceiling rather than pinned to it? If so, that may be important, too.
https://preview.redd.it/wciag18xrw0d1.jpg?width=683&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c3c49ba8c0fe72191ffdd1be5b1e05bc92b50eb
The exterior of the Winchester home is also interesting for its similarity to the Welch home that we see later in the episode.
https://preview.redd.it/iznfu8g3sw0d1.jpg?width=683&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=001ebb7eebf7e95110cc3d4d34a3d61e6907c952
https://preview.redd.it/hrft5ed5sw0d1.jpg?width=683&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b1c52f37473faa9a2d567d08f68a63e3d7c57c57
The two houses aren’t identical, but there are some marked similarities. Inside, the parallels are even more evident. Indeed, it seems the same set was used for both interiors, albeit with different dressing.
https://preview.redd.it/c5h8y5lasw0d1.jpg?width=683&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0d605170a2451b8029f7eb3bfe1182415749c9ce
Compare this shot with the one of Mary descending the stairs in the episode opening: in many ways, they’re identical. So, I’d like to return to the observation I made earlier about the white nightdress Mary is wearing and ask the question: was Mary a woman in white? Later in the series - in season 5, “Dark Side of the Moon” – we learn that John left home for an indefinite time when Dean was a child. Did he leave her for another woman? Was John unfaithful to Mary?
A Naturalistic Reading The parallels between the Winchesters and the Welches suggest to me a number of interpretive possibilities. The first is that Mary’s death was actually suicide, and the manner of it may have been hinted at in the shot I drew attention to earlier where it appeared her body might have been hanging from the ceiling. What if she hung herself from a light fitting and this was the true cause of the fire? There may be corroboration for this possibility in episode 9, “Home” when John’s former mechanic colleague says that the fire was caused by “an electrical short in the ceiling or walls or something”. We only ever saw Mary’s death from John’s pov. Later in the season there are hints that Dean witnessed something, too, but he’s never talked about what he saw. In “Home” when Sam asks him about it he says he remembers the fire and the heat, and carrying Sam out the front door, then, after a pause he adds “and, well, you know Dad’s story as well as I do. Mom was….was on the ceiling. And whatever put her there was long gone by the time Dad found her.” [My emphasis]. It’s possible Mary’s supernatural death was a delusion John created because he couldn’t face the guilt of being the cause of her suicide. Everything after that point would, in that case, be a shared psychosis that John imposed on his sons.
An Alternative Supernatural Reading Or, everyone died in the fire, and the Winchesters are spirits condemned to a purgatorial existence where they spend the rest of eternity fighting their demons. (Ghosts only see what they want to see).
A Metaphorical Reading On the other hand, maybe the parallel between the Winchesters and the Welches was intended to do no more than foreshadow that directly or indirectly, through her death, Mary would ultimately be the cause of her children’s destruction just as surely as Constance killed hers. And maybe the whole kit’n caboodle is just a metaphor for the way people trap themselves in a self-destructive nightmare when they can’t let go of the past.
While speculating about possible interpretations of shots or scenes, I’m not suggesting that any of them represent “what Supernatural really means”. These are only alternative readings of the same material. They represent ways in which the show allows our imaginations to explore multiple worlds of possibility. Sometimes it does this overtly. For example, in Nightmare, when we are explicitly told that John never physically abused his children, but we are invited through the example of Max, and Sam’s response to it, to imagine a world of possibility in which it might have happened. As Sam himself puts it: “a little more tequila and a little less demon hunting and we woulda had Max's childhood.” http://www.supernaturalwiki.com/1.14_Nightmare_(transcript))
Other times the suggestions are more subtle. An image, or collection of images, or an ambiguous line of dialogue, can allude to what might have been: worlds of possibility in which Sam might have been a psychotic patient, or the brothers might have been ghosts, all the rich proliferation of meaning that has made Supernatural the most creatively inspiring show on television.
.
PS I wrote a short one shot fic on this theme, if anyone's interested: https://www.reddit.com/Supernaturalfanfics/comments/1c4ja14/weeping_woman_pg_not_canon_compliant_mention_of/

2024.05.17 05:20 AliceStanleyJr "I Hate My Reflection for Years and Years": TTPD & Sylvia Plath’s “The Magic Mirror"

Introduction: The Mysterious Double Album
I’ll always remember 2 AM on April 19th 2024. I was in my pjs, alone, on my balcony, fresh off my first listen to Taylor Swift’s album The Tortured Poet’s Department. After sufficiently enjoying my solitary experience, I took to the internet to see what the masses were saying…when Swift dropped a whole second album: The Tortured Poets Department Anthology. Swift, a master of both Easter egging surprises for her fandom and practicing the number one rule of business (give the people what they want!), had been hinting at something “double” for months. Most significantly, while accepting her Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album, she flashed a “peace sign.” That damn peace sign haunted the fandom for months. Swift’s corporate social media account, u/TaylorNation, used peace sign emojis and called attention to the number two whenever possible (ie teasing the album 22 days out etc.). There were also many “2”s present in in the promotional “experiences” leading up to the album release date—including statues of peace signs at the TTPD interactive experience at The Grove in LA. As usual, some Swifties went bonkers with their theories (or “clowning” as outlandish theorizing is referred to in the community). I myself couldn’t help but believe some concept of doubling would be significant in TTPD, but I couldn’t have guessed a full DOUBLE album (Swift’s capitalization). What an absolute treat. Mother was, as they say, mothering.
…Only the two mania didn’t seem to end post-drop. If anything, the two mania heightened. The albums were not just surprises in themselves, they were full of mystery. They seemed to reference multiple relationships, cryptic narratives, allusions to Swift’s previous songs, allusions to iconic poets, and very often, twins. The sleuthing type of Swiftie (full disclosure, moi) dove in deep. We gathered where we do—on Twitter, on TikTok, on Reddit (my preferred sandlot). And as we obsessed over every lyric, literary allusion, and video clip, Swift, our self-appointed “chairman” seemed to encourage us. Swift added a TTPD set to her Eras tour in Paris. Afterward, she posted a collection of photos to Instagram. The second photo of the post is Swift onstage, in a sparkling showman’s outfit, flashing two fingers.
Initial Tortured Poets and Sylvia Plath Connections
Swift has always been an incredible poet, but that’s not necessarily how the world saw hesees her. Swift is a pop star, specifically, Swift was a young girly pop star, most known for her tabloid romances and dramas, which she would (allegedly) write about in her music. Swift’s work has been labeled as “confessional” since her first album, which included songs she openly said were about boys at her high school. I offer this context (or, lore) to explain why I began seeing connections to TTPD in Sylvia Plath’s “confessional” work.
Of course, the theme of TTPD is tortured poets, so many avid literary Swifties have enjoyed seeking connections between Swift’s new songs and iconic poetry. No connections are overt, but some seem to be more likely than others. Namely, there’s been much discussion of Virginia Woolf thanks to the song “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?”(perhaps a riff on the Edward Albee play title). Other Swifties have found possible lyrical links to Mary Shelley and Charlotte Bronte. Swift herself references Patti Smith and Dylan Thomas in the album’s title track.
I remembered a third poet in relation to Smith and Thomas: Sylvia Plath, obviously an all timer of a tortured poet. I remember hearing an anecdote that she had been obsessed with Thomas and stalked him outside the Chelsea Hotel (also named in the TTPD title track). I did a quick skim of Plath’s Wikipedia to confirm and then started noticing many possible connections to TTPD and Plath’s life.
In the “Fortnight” music video, Swift acts out being institutionalized for insanity and getting electric shock treatment—two significant experiences in Plath’s life. Plath was also coupled with a deeply problematic man, Ted Hughes. Plath fell in love with Hughes for his artistic talent before he revealed himself to be an unsupportive parter, ultimately cheating on Plath with a younger woman. The narrative is not too dissimilar to the narrative about Swift’s alleged ex Matty Healy, as seemingly told in TTPD. (Of course, we don’t know the true subjects of Swift’s songs—if they’re even actually confessional—but some key hints point to Healy. Whether those hints provide actual context to Swift’s life or to the story Swift is telling of her life, one cannot know.) Finally, several of TTPD songs reference a latent desire for suicide (“I might as well die / it would make no difference” etc.). Okay, post-“finally,” these are stretches, but, I’ll note anyway: one of Plath’s most famous collections of poems is titled Ariel, but an alternate title was Daddy. There are connections to both words in TTPD via the song “But Daddy I Love Him.” The title is a line from the Disney movie The Little Mermaid (which features the main character Ariel, a mermaid, caught between two worlds). Extra clowning: some people (hi, I'm people) believe Swift’s 1989 costume for her first Paris concert was an allusion to Ariel: a pink crop top and a seafoam skirt.
As I dug into Plath's life, I couldn’t help but also see similarities to Swift's life. Both women were prolific writers from a very young age. Also, although possibly obscured through artistic license, both women were/are known to write about their own lives. (Plath was apparently encouraged by her professors Robert Lowell and Anne Sexton to write from her experience. I cannot help but tie in Swift’s “The Manuscript” lyric “the Professor said to write what you know.”) Both Plath and Swift expressed/express their depression via their writing, but if you only knew them from their public personas, you’d never guess the depths of their struggles. It seems both Plath and Swift lived/live double lives. Plath was actually fascinated by the concept of doubles. In fact, the concept of doubling was the topic of Plath’s college thesis paper “The Magic Mirror.”
The Magic Mirror and TTPD
Plath’s college paper is sadly not available to the general public. (It had a limited print run in, you guessed it, 1989.) But! I was able to read a few texts about the thesis, and the amount of possible TTPD references is astounding.
Since we can’t directly analyze Swift’s work via Plath’s directly, I’d like to share several key quotes from the most telling article I could find about the “The Magic Mirror”: “Sylvia Plath’s Magic Mirror” by Kelly Coyne (May 2018, The Los Angeles Review of Books). (To be noted, Coyne has also written about Swift, in her article “Growing Up In Taylor Swift’s America” in December 2023 on Literary Hub—a fabulous read!)
Early in her article, Coyne sets the scene for Plath's thesis:
“Her undergraduate thesis, which she wrote as a senior at Smith College...is titled “The Magic Mirror: A Study of the Double in Two of Dostoevsky’s Novels.” “The Magic Mirror” explores literary doubles made up of a character’s repressed traits, and, as the double grows in power, it heralds the protagonist’s death. Citing Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as well as Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, Plath argued that the choice to create a double works to “reveal hitherto concealed character traits in a radical manner” and simultaneously exposes the driving conflicts of the novel housing that character. Her thesis claims that both Ivan, of The Brothers Karamazov, and Golyadkin, of The Double, have attempted to repress troubling aspects of their personalities, resulting in the double.”
Immediately, I imagine the two versions of Swift from the “Anti-Hero” music video. One Swift is real, true, sensible. The other is a pot-stirring, self-esteem destroying, alcoholic. During Eras, the huge Swift (monster on a hill) screams and stomps around in the background while the real, true Swift smiles and dances in a sparkle dress onstage. The fandom seems to be referring to these two Swifts as Taylor Swift and TAYLOR SWIFT (TM). Folks have theorized Post-Malone in the Fortnight music video is not necessarily a lover, but a twin, or double, of Swift. This theory is enhances by the Eras visuals during that song, specifically two dancers walking away to the back of the stage, but then becoming one.
More Coyne: “Plath, quoting Dostoyevsky in her thesis, noted that Ivan’s double, Smerdyakov, is “wrinkled” and “yellow.” The distinct differences in appearance between originator and double, she continued, are meant to reflect the protagonist’s mental state and cultural status.”
First of all, yellow. In the Gaylor community, folks have often theorized yellow symbolizes being closeted—a reading based on the symbolic coloring in the 1999 film …But I’m a Cheerleader. However, one need not be a Gaylor to consider the importance of yellow to Swift’s storytelling. Most recently, Swift performed “my tears ricochet” at Eras in a bright yellow dress, as her dancers were dressed for a funeral. Following Coyne’s analysis of Plath's analysis of Dostoyevsky, one could guess Swift is teasing a death of some version of herself.
Coyne discusses how Plath clearly used a “double” of herself to write The Bell Jar. Plath herself spent a summer in New York interning for Mademoiselle. The protagonist in TBJ, Esther, spends a summer in New York interning at a magazine too. To go even further down the rabbit hole, Esther also doubles herself, frequently expressing normalcy on the outside and despair on the inside. On the book's first page, Esther tells her audience, “I was supposed to be having the time of my life.” (Again, I cannot help but hear a Swift echo of, “I can read your mind / she’s having the time of her life” from “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” about smiling through her depression.) Coyne makes many more references to mirrors and concealing in The Bell Jar, Ether’s split (and sadness) gets worse and worse the more she hides who she is from others. Notably, at a low point, Esther hides under her mother’s bed. (And Swift sings of a post-heartbreak depression, “Afterwards she only ate kids' cereal / And couldn't sleep unless it was in her mother's bed.”)
Coyne writes about the “imprisoned” aspect of doubles: “The wound from which Esther tries, and fails, to hide chimes with the inescapable, colonizing double, and Plath’s language again illustrates its penal nature: it is inside Esther, but it traps her like a jail cell.” (Again, I cannot help but see references to “Fresh Out the Slammer”, “The Smaller Man Who Ever Lived,” and the TTPD Eras visuals of cages and cell lighting.)
Coyne, on Plath’s doubles’ names, something Swift has not ever used (or so we think): “From her conception of The Bell Jar all the way to its final revisions, Plath suffered an exhausting amount of anxiety over its heroine’s name.” Plath wrote to a friend, “‘I’ll have to publish it under a pseudonym, if I ever get it accepted, because it’s so chock full of real people I’d be sued to death’...Indeed, this wasn’t mere paranoia; she did have to change her protagonist’s name at the instruction of her editor for legal reasons.”
Coyne continues, “Most novelists likely have concerns about being associated with the characters to whom they give life, especially the ugly ones, and especially when the character resembles its author. Yet what is unique about Plath’s case is her knowledge of the theoretical underpinnings and implications of her choice to push Esther away, and the hold this knowledge assumed on Plath’s work and life. Another look at The Bell Jar with a consideration of Esther as Plath’s double tangles the issue even further, and Plath drops clues for this kind of reading throughout the novel. Esther, for example, sits down to write her own novel and recounts, “My heroine would be myself, only in disguise. She would be called Elaine. Elaine. I counted the letters on my fingers. There were six letters in Esther, too. It seemed a lucky thing.” Not coincidentally, Plath’s first name has six letters as well.” Again, Plath was in a bizarre double infinity loop (like the loop on the Eras stage in “Down Bad”?). Plath was concealing her double, the protagonist in her novel, who was concealing her double, the protagonist in her novel.
Coyne wraps up her findings: “In her thesis, written nearly a decade earlier, as she turned 22 — the year after her first documented suicide attempt — Plath claimed, quoting Otto Rank:
In such situations, where the Double symbolizes the evil or repressed elements in man’s nature, the apparition of the Double “becomes a persecution by it, the repressed material returns in the form of that which represses.” Man’s instinct to avoid or ignore the unpleasant aspects of his character turns into an active terror when he is faced by his Double, which resurrects those very parts of his personality which he sought to escape. The confrontation of the Double in these instances usually results in a duel which ends in insanity or death for the original hero.”
Coyne seems to argue Plath believed an artist's double has the power to become bigger than the artist herself, ultimately killing her. Is TTPD Swift's predetermination of, hopefully, her her double's death instead of her own?
In Conclusion: Plath to her Mentor, Dessner on Swift
Who knows what TTPD is really truly about, and who knows if we ever will.
The biggest Easter egg, hiding in plain sight, is that the album is titled THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. There’s no apostrophe after “poet.” Nor is there an apostrophe after the “s” in “poets.” The department does not belong to a poet or to a collection of poets. It is a department OF tortured poets, perhaps two, to be exact. …or perhaps the album indicates the departure of the tortured poet...and her double.
I’ll sign off with two final quotes from my research:
According to Coyne, three months before Plath died by suicide, she had written a mentor about her second (obviously unfinished) book. Plath wrote, “It is to be called “Doubletake”, meaning that the second look you take at something reveals a deeper, double meaning […] it is semi-autobiographical about a wife whose husband turns out to be a deserter and philanderer although she had thought he was wonderful & perfect.”
According to Aaron Dessner’s TTPD release Instagram post: ”Keep searching and you'll find some new detail, layer or sliver of meaning with each listen.”
SUBREDDIT PS! Shout out to Expensive_Succotash5 for noting the TTPD intro poem's reference to being out of the oven, could be an allusion to Plath's death. Also shout-out to Good-Amphibian-7993 for this connection to a photo of Plath with a rose, not unlike Swift's album rose art.

2024.05.17 05:12 leblaun Ripley: the most stair shots in cinematic history

The first episode has a sequence that lasts several minutes, showing Ripley make his way up the endless stairs to Richard Greenleaf’s estate in Atrani. He gasps for air, not used to this kind of laborious exercise: rather, this kind of hard work.
His plan to take over this man’s life was evident from the beginning, as he practiced saying to the mirror “Hello, I’m Richard Greenleaf” At the end of the first episode. And yet, how could he possibly summit this impossible hill? All we’ve seen from Tom so far is his failed fraudulent check schemes. How could he climb all those stairs, without missing a step?
Stairs are in abundance in this series. I was astonished once I started to pay attention how many shots of stairs—be it in the background or of various characters traversing them—there were in each episode. Though I do not have the exact figure, it does not seem like an exaggeration to assume there are over a hundred shots of stairs across the eight episodes.
I couldn’t figure out their significance, aside from representing class. One scene in particular, when Ripley (posing as Richard) has to move to a cheaper hotel and asks the desk clerk if his room is up. He points up as he asks this. The clerk replies “no. Down, to the right, down.” Tom drops his hand to point down, then descends back into a horrid room like the ones he was used to in New York. This effectively symbolized his regression, as his plan began to unravel before his eyes.
Yet this was just one example of the use of stairs in the series. And clearly, they meant so much more. I couldn’t figure out what they represented otherwise, however, until the final episode.
It all has to do with the Picasso.
After successfully duping Marie, the private detective from New York, Mr. Greenleaf, and the Italian Inspector, Tom retrieves the Picasso painting he stowed away, ready to begin anew in the United Kingdom. He stares at this abstract painting and reminisces of his journey.
We zoom in on the painting to reveal what it represents: stairs.
The painting, to Tom, represents his entire laborious journey. It also represents the final reward; Tom can sell this painting in the United Kingdom for a kings ransom.
Stairs, effectively, seem to represent hard work. Tom dragged Freddie’s body down stairs. Tom had to climb the steps in Atrani. Tom is the only person in the story who shows the capacity to work hard, save for the various service workers and the Inspector, who Tom seems to respect. Dickie, Marie, Freddie, and all the rich charlatans throughout the story irritate Tom beyond belief, and their inability to actually work in any capacity prevents them from resisting Tom’s will.
. . .
This was a quick write up after finishing the series. I really loved the show and found it to be as effective as any show I’ve seen recently.
My ignorance, however, prevents me from understanding the significance of the painter he is obsessed with, whom he owns the book of and visits as many of the paintings as he can find, as well as the flashback to the 1609s with a similar murder case as his.
It should be noted that the murder in this flashback takes place on—you guessed it— stairs.
Please chime in with any comments on the show, this analysis, or if you can shed some light on my two blind spots.

2024.05.17 03:37 IDreamtIwokeUp The Famous Gary Renard vs Bruce MacDonald Debate: A Tale of Two Thomas’es

Who is Gary Renard:
Gary is a famous ACIM author. He has written “The Disappearance of the Universe”. He claims to be the reincarnation of the disciple Thomas and he claims his book came to him by inflesh ascended masters. He calls these Arten and Pursah. Purshah is supposedly a future incarnation of Thomas, and Arten a future incarnation of Saint Thaddeus.
Who is Bruce MacDonald:
Following a NDE, Bruce had some mystical experiences. He claims after this he was able to talk to God, Jesus, and in a past life he was the disciple Thomas. He wrote two books about this including “The Thomas Book Near Death, a Quest and a New Gospel by the Twin Brother of Jesus”. There he recounts his adventures as a disciple in Jesus’s inner circle and relays supposedly new teachings about Jesus.
Tragically it appears he died somewhat recently and his website went offline. That had a ton of interesting information about Gary Renard, Thomas, and even the Course in Miracles. But…the good news is much of it is still available from archive.org. Here is an archived sitemap.
The Thomas Conflict:
They both claim to be Thomas! This is extra funny when you consider the original meaning of the word Thomas means twin.
Let’s start with Gary Renard’s claims:
Let’s go now to Bruce’s side:
Did Gary Renard Plagiarize Stephen Patterson and Marvin Meyer
In 1945 the Gospel of Thomas was discovered. Scholars Stephen Patterson and Marvin Meyer translated this into English (http://www.gnosis.org/naghamm/gosthom.html).
Renard claimed the ascended master Pursah (future Thomas from the past) dictated to him a new and corrected version of the Gospel of Thomas. This was put into the book “Pursah’s Gospel of Thomas”.
However it appears Bruce did differential analysis on this and the Patterson/Meyer version and discovered they often were identical.
That can’t be. The Gospel of Thomas was written in coptic, but was likely seeded from Greek or Aramic sources. An ascended master like Pursah should be able to go straight to the source to explain what these teachings meant. Yet these are too similar to existing English translations. For translation work this is just too coincidental. Anybody familiar with language translations knows there is a fair degree of subjectivity that happens in the process. A lack of variance between two translations is suspicious.
Now there are differences…but many are minor and perhaps “token”. What’s even stranger is the location of the “token differences”. They are mostly placed in the early verses and gradually tapered off. As if Gary (or a source for Gary) got tired of “improving” the verses and got lazy in the end and just copy/pasted.
Greg Mackie Chimes in:
https://circleofa.org/library/gary-renard/
Some of Greg’s claims are unfair (like his criticism of the ascended master concept)...but some of his critiques are well done and raise legit questions about the audacity of Gary’s “ascended masters”. Examples:
Robert Perry Chimes in:
https://circleofa.org/library/why-dont-the-masters-have-an-original-thought/
Robert observes that many of Purah’s channeled teachings sound coincidentally VERY similar to the teachings of Wapnick and use Ken’s unique language. He goes into great detail on this. An example:
Pursah: “You romanticize the South American rainforest by thinking it’s one of the holiest spots on earth. If you could observe in accelerated motion what goes on underneath the ground there, you would see that the roots of trees actually compete with each other for the water”
Wapnick: “We admire the beauties and wondrous delicacies of nature. Yet within this same world we perceive competition and destructiveness….Trees’ roots strangle neighboring roots seeking their rightful soil.”
If Gary were using ascended masters as a literary device this would make sense. Gary was a HUGE fan of Ken’s. It would be logical if some of his mannerisms rubbed off on Gary. But for an ascended master to plagiarize Ken seems a bit odd.
Gary Reacts to Robert Perry and Bruce MacDonald:
https://www.garyrenard.com/FraudAccusations.html
Gary very angrily defends himself against both complaints. Examples:
This latest, ludicrous controversy is being championed and promoted by Robert Perry and the so-called "Circle of Atonement." Robert has a long track record of attacking other A Course in Miracles teachers, including Ken Wapnick and myself. For 15 years, Robert has been the most divisive force in the A Course in Miracles community. His actions over this long period of time are an insult to everything that A Course in Miracles stands for.

As for Robert Perry, his jealousy of me is so severe I think at this point the only thing that would stop him from trying to attack me would be if someone drove a wooden stake through his heart.

Robert Perry will try to tell you this isn't personal with him. Don't believe him. He'll try to tell you that he's a "scholar." A scholar? That's odd. I don't see a PhD next to his name. How honest is that?
Jesus Twin Theory
Bruce MacDonald believes that Jesus had relatives who were his disciples…and this included his twin brother Didymos Judas Thomas. The words Didymos and Thomas actually mean twin. Judas was a common name and note this wasn’t the same Judas that sold Jesus. All that said though, I don’t believe this part of the story. Twin is more likely to be symbolic (more on this below).
Kim MIchaels Chimes In:
Jesus (per Kim) explains that the disciples did not write any of the gospels directly. Also he didn’t dictate them, but there was some inspiration: https://ascendedmasteranswers.com/gospel-of-thomas/
Jesus (per Kim) when asked if any disciples (specifically Thomas) were fallen beings, admits some were. On Thomas he says he has moved on and made his ascension: https://ascendedmasteranswers.com/gospel-of-thomas/
Jesus (per Kim) is asked if Judas Thomas is the biological twin brother of Jesus. Jesus indicates no. Rather family terms were used for spirit ranks. First there was brother, then bride, then twin (these were figurative not literal terms). Thomas reached twin status, which allowed Jesus to communicate with him more effectively. This seems to contradict Bruce’s testimony. https://ascendedmasteranswers.com/judas-thomas/ & https://ascendedmasteranswers.com/becoming-a-twin-of-jesus/
Mother Mary (per Kim) responds to a question about the “The Disappearance of the Universe”. She claims this is not a legit book. Masters don’t travel back in time to teach to themselves. The true messagers for DU are actually coming from a lower mental realm and not the ascended realm. She is generally dismissive of DU: https://ascendedmasteranswers.com/ideas-from-the-disappearance-of-the-universe-by-gary-renard/
Gary’s Weird Connections:
Gary claims he found a girl who was the reincarnation of Helen Schucman. Apparently Ken agreed. Gary even posted a picture of him and the girl on Facebook.
Included in the photo is his wife Cindy who Gary claims is the reincarnation of Thaddeus. Bruce MacDonald claims that Thaddeus was not a separate person in the bible but was actually an alias for Thomas. So did Gary marry himself?
Even more confusing….on top of this there is actually a woman on this Reddit forum (I won’t dox her) who claims David Hoffmeister said she was the incarnation of Helen. But when David told Gary this, Gary said he already found his reincarnated Helen.
Reddit User Predicts Content for Gary’s 3rd Book
https://www.reddit.com/ACIM/comments/ecxr3b/comment/fbgc40k/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
This is odd…how could a Reddit user predict what content an ascended master would dictate to Gary for a future yet unwritten book?
Simon Magus Connection
https://web.archive.org/web/20210411093059/http://thomastwin.com/20%20A%20ACIM,%20Simon%20and%20Trinity.html
Simon per the bible was a magician and trickster. He’s considered a somewhat malevolent entity. Bruce MacDonald claims he was shown a vision in which it was revealed that th Gary was the reincarnation of Simon Magus and he is tricking people now as he did previously.
I have heard of at least two people who have had the experience of Simon Magus trying to “possess” their bodies since they were children, even trying to push them out of the body to take over. It would seem that, instead of withdrawing into the spiritual realms between lives, Simon Magus has remained as a “ghost,” a kind of psychic vampire who maintains his life in the astral realms by feeding on the lives of the living through the centuries. The people I have communicated with or heard of have had the strong sense of a negative male presence trying to take over their lives, draining their energy, alienating other people and claiming to be Simon Magus. In one case, this Simon actually insisted that the person who was the victim of this kind of “psychic vampirism” should read A Course in Miracles, in order to make the person more aware of the philosophy of Simon Magus and the Simonians. There was also a female presence which seemed to be Helen. I heard this from someone who was so traumatized by the disembodied Simon Magus since childhood that they searched on Google for anything to do with Simon and found my website, which confirmed for them all they had been experiencing. Fortunately, I have been able to help through The Prayer of Silence and The Thomas Book.
Thomas Book per Bruce MacDonald
Bruce claims this was dictated to him from Thomas…but it was also an experiential event. He believes he was there as Thomas in a previous life.
The contents of the book are interesting. This includes some unique takes. Eg He goes into detail on the background of Mary Magdalene and Jesus and how they were married early, but he left her early on to focus on his spiritual work.
The most extraordinary claim is of the crucifixion. Thomas claims that the disciples knew that Jesus would be executed. But they didn’t have photographs back then and knew the Romans could have difficulty identifying Jesus. So they hatched a plan to have “Saul” impersonate Jesus. He would be executed in the place of Jesus. The three ring leaders of this plan were Judas, Thomas and Peter (the three hot heads). They actually kidnapped Jesus and hid him away during the trial. Thomas believed a fake Jesus was crucified (hence the doubting Thomas meme), but Peter is irate and claims the real Jesus ended up on the cross which Thomas doesn’t believe because he was in charge of guarding the kidnapped Jesus. It is possible Jesus bi-located (masters can do this) to throw off this plan. Certainly both Mary’s saw Jesus on the cross…they would have recognized a fake Jesus.
What’s also interesting is the contempt that Thomas has for Peter in much of this book. To Thomas Peter is very dogmatic and overly critical of sex. Thomas was also not a fan of the essenes (which Peter was among), and was upset that apparently Joseph and Mary were kicked out of the essene community for minor rule violations.
Bruce MacDonald on the dictation of ACIM
https://web.archive.org/web/20210411093059/http://thomastwin.com/20%20A%20ACIM,%20Simon%20and%20Trinity.html
My Inner Guide tells me that A Course in Miracles was dictated by Simon Magus.
I dreamed I was in a house with many rooms. In them were people who had been turned into wooden statues, struggling to get out of their wooden confines. I knew immediately that they were living under a spell, so I went from room to room removing the spell “in the name of Jesus and of God.” Once the spell was removed, the people jumped up, looked around in a frightened way, realized they had been trapped in this house, and fled.
I then found the area in which the wizard put spells on people, his “workshop,” complete with intricately tangled paraphernalia hanging from the walls and ceiling. I cleansed the area of all psychic power and sealed it “in the name of Jesus and of God” so that the wizard would never again be able to entrap the unwary.
After I had completed this cleansing process, the wizard came into the entrance hallway where I stood. His face seemed familiar. I had thought this wizard would be frightening, but he was very friendly, with a round, smiling, jovial and pink face. He attempted, laughingly and in great good humour, to put a spell on me as well. I looked directly at him and, “in the name of Jesus and of God,” removed his power to cast spells.
That was the end of the dream. I have not met Gary Renard in the flesh but, when I woke, I realized the smiling man looked exactly like the pictures I had seen on his website.
The basic premise of the Course is that the world we experience is an illusion. This is similar to what Simon taught while alive. Simon Magus taught that Helen was an incarnation of the "thought of God," through which the angels were created. However, the angels, not God, then created the world. Since God did not create the world, it is an illusion. Simon taught that, to achieve salvation and union with God, it was necessary to realize that the world was not created by God but was an illusion created by the angels. Once his converts realized that, then the universe would disappear and they would experience oneness with God.
The Bruce MacDonald Jesus provides detailed insight into ACIM
https://web.archive.org/web/20190718234659/http://thomastwin.com/21%20A%20Jesus,%20God%20and%20ACIM.html (scroll all the way down to “Yeshua said it would be best for him to start”)
Robert Perry asks Bruce to ask Jesus about the Course. He does and the answers are very interesting.
It’s too long to repost here, but this Jesus is largely critical of the Course. He states the real author was impersonating him (something other sources have said) and its teachings are mostly incorrect (eg the Course indicates God is very far away when he isn’t). This Jesus also cites some examples of the Course changing between third person, “we”, and “I” when referring to Jesus as evidence something is up. This Jesus also says that Gary was not Thomas, and that Pursah and Arten are not ascended masters. This Jesus also says Simon Magus was the real author of the Course.
This brings us back to the actual authors of ACIM. I have asserted through Bruce MacDonald elsewhere on this website that the book was written by a first century magician by the name of Simon Magus.
That is only partly accurate, of course. In the same way as Judas Thomas was the ego centre of a particular Individuality (Spiritual Centre of Consciousness) in the first century, and Bruce MacDonald is the incarnation of that same Individuality in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, so Simon Magus and Gary Renard are the incarnations of a particular Individuality who is exploring the potential and the limits of the Docetic philosophy.
Individualities, Spirits, those centers of spiritual consciousness which are manifestations of the Divine Source, can choose to explore anything they wish – God has given them freedom to explore what they will.
It is technically this Individuality which is exploring Doceticism. It is this Spirit who developed the philosophy, partly in the incarnate state and partly between lives. The shorthand version of that is to say that Simon Magus developed the philosophy, since a major part of any of these explorations must take place in the body, and then, after developing and refining the philosophy further in the discarnate state, dictated it through Helen Schucman as A Course in Miracles.
Simon Magus was not the only one involved, but he was the primary focus of the Soul Group exploring the philosophy. And Gary Renard is not the only one involved in ACIM now, although he is the direct incarnation of what we can call the "Simon Magus Individuality." Ken Wapnick and a larger group of souls are also involved, although Renard is the present focus who will ultimately lead to its demise.
Robert Perry did write a response to these critiques of the Course. In general he was dismissive: https://circleofa.org/library/response-bruce-macdonalds-views/
Bruce then responds to the response: https://web.archive.org/web/20210618175625/http://thomastwin.com/22%20A%20Reaction%20to%20ACIM.html
Conclusions:
All these crazy stories are enough to make one suspect of ANY divine revelation or channeled source. My personal opinion is that Gary Renard is not consciously deceiving his followers. But, he is getting guidance from incorporeal life forms who are NOT ascended masters and ARE interested in deception. In this sense Gary is more of a victim, but he does he deserves blame for not showing discernment. I’m sure there are many instances by which these “ascended masters” behaved strangely and showed red flags to Gary who I suspect is loath to reveal these publicly.
As for Bruce, I don’t know what to think. He came from a more orthodox christian background and this may have jaded his view on the Course. He does make mistakes. But some of what he says rings true.
I don’t think either was the real Thomas. Although I think the disciple Thomas might have been one of the entities that was communicating to Bruce.

Explaining false comic book outliers (long post)
In all fiction there are situations in which writers deliberately change the level of power that a character normally displayed, either for the benefit of the story, due to different interpretations of said character's power, or simply due to plot demands. We call these moments outliers, and they are considered invalid when used in a vs. These moments exist, and they need to be acknowledged to make a coherent assessment of a character's power.
The problem is that with the popularization of the term in recent years, it has been used in an increasingly indiscriminate way; almost always against comic book characters to accuse them of always being inconsistent, with clearly malicious intentions to nerf and make said characters lose in comparisons against characters from other fictions.
This misuse of the term has especially affected Marvel, although DC and Vertigo are also a frequent target of this malpractice. This usually consists of establishing a fixed and immutable level for the comic character in question and classifying as outlier (and therefore invalid) any feat shown by the character above said level, without giving further explanations. Of course, this way of using the term is totally incorrect and leads us to the question...
HOW TO RECOGNIZE A TRUE OUTLIER?:
For a feat to be considered a true outlier, it must simultaneously meet these 3 requirements:
  1. The jump (or descent) in power is considerable: We cannot consider it an outlier that a character who has proven to destroy planets destroys a star. An outlier is always an extreme case that completely falls outside the scales shown by the character.
  2. There is no explanation for it: We can only consider as outlier something for which the writer has not provided any justification for such a jump or descent in power; If the writer took the trouble to tell us why this happens, we cannot consider it outlier.
  3. It is a unique moment: Outliers are always situations that occur exceptionally and are rarely repeated. If a feat considered an outlier is repeated twice, it is very possible that it is not an outlier. If it is repeated 3 times, it is extremely unlikely that it is an outlier and we will have to look for another explanation.
COMIC SCENES CONSIDERED OUTLIERS WHICH ARE NOT IN FACT:
Now that we have made clear the correct way to define an outlier, we are going to explain various scenes from Marvel and DC comics usually taken out of context by people who did not read the comics where they took place, and which are usually used as weapons against them. (either to accuse them of being inconsistent or to try to degrade their characters).
SPIDER-MAN BLITZES HULK:
This happened in Spider-Man (1990) #26...except it never really happened. In this scene, Peter is talking to Mary Jane about how her spider sense works and uses the emerald giant as an example of her great reflexes, but at no point is he alluding to actual combat or anything that happened previously. The scan was cropped for convenience and spread over the internet without its original context.

A similar situation seemed to occur in Peter Parker: Spider-Man #14, but we soon discovered that the Hulk was letting himself get beat up upon hearing that Peter believed his wife was dead.

BATMAN KICKS THE SPECTER:
This occurred in Tales of the Unexpected #4. As we can see in the next scene, Batman himself is surprised that he was able to kick the Spectre, as he did not believe that he could achieve such a feat. To which the Specter himself clarifies immediately afterwards that he allowed Batman to hit him because he thought it would make Batman feel better, and that Crispus Allen, his houseguest, is restricting him too much. This is not surprising, since Crispus himself said moments before that he was not going to allow the Specter to kill the criminal he was trying to take down.

BLACK PANTHER TRAPS AND STRUGGLES WITH THE SILVER SURFER:
This occurred in Fantastic Four #545. Black Panther was able to catch the Surfer not with his own speed, but by using his own board (which as we all know is extremely fast), using it to reach the Surfer and make a prey on him. Once the hold was applied, Black Panther counted on Silver Surfer's immensely superior strength to be of no use against his grip and threatened to break his arm. However, all this would turn out to be a bluff by the Silver Surfer, who was pretending to be subdued by Black Panther because he wanted to hear him tell him about his plan.

SOLOMON GRUNDY HARMS SUPERMAN:
This occurred in Superman #676. Clarify that Solomon Grundy has very variable intelligence and power depending on his resurrection. This was one of the strongest, capable of defeating Alan Scott. Superman allowed himself to be hit by Grundy at the beginning of the fight with the aim of intimidating him, but discovered that Grundy was stronger than he thought, deciding to change his strategy. Still, Superman was holding back a lot during the course of the battle to not hurt Grundy too much, something typical of the Man of Steel. As irrefutable proof of this, when Superman decided to get halfway serious, he left Grundy on the verge of death with a single blow.

BATMAN ENDURES A BEATING FROM DARKSEID:
This occurred in Superman/Batman #12. Not only is this not an outlier...it wasn't even that way. It is an invention of a certain despicable and disturbing YouTuber mixing several scans taken out of context. Batman gained access to the codes to the fire pits of Apokolips and threatened Darkseid to activate them all at once (which would destroy the planet) if he did not free Supergirl. The "beating" in question consisted of Darkseid delivering three gentle blows to Batman as torture for his personal enjoyment. Sure, soft for Darkseid. Fortunately, Batman obtained the armor of a royal guard from Darkseid, allowing him to withstand the torture of the new god of Apokolips. It wouldn't take long for Darkseid to give in and recognize Batman's cunning.

THOR IS KNOWN BY A HAND GUN:
This occurred in Black Panther (1998) #8. The gun (and its bullet) was Wakandan technology, which as we all know is based on vibranium, one of the few existing magical metals capable of harming Thor. Additionally, Monica was wearing a vibranium exoskeleton that greatly increased her physical capabilities. We are later told that the bullet barely passed through the skin of Thor's forehead, and he momentarily passed out from the impact. once explained it doesn't sound as horrible as it first seemed, right?

HULK IS INJURED BY GORILLAS:
This occurred in Savage Wolverine #5. I think the fact that those gorillas hit Hulk hard enough to break stone structures says a lot about whether they are normal gorillas. In any case, those gorillas are so strong because from birth they were imbued with Man-Thing's sap and were linked to him, and Man-Thing's strength is comparable to that of the Hulk (at least at his base). . To this we must add that Hulk was in a relatively calm state when he was attacked by the gorillas.

https://imgur.com/a/KAjRBsJ
SUPERMAN DEFEATS DOMINUS:
This occurred across several issues of Action Comics and Man of Steel, although Dominus' final defeat was in Superman: King of the World. Although Dominus is very powerful, he possesses a great weakness: he is very dependent on his reality warping, to which Superman became too resistant after mastering the mental discipline of Torquasm-Vo. Without his reality-warping abilities, Dominus is forced to rely exclusively on physical combat to fight Superman, where he had the advantage due to his regeneration and the mental exhaustion it takes for Superman to fight extensively while he maintains this state of mind.

https://imgur.com/a/qrYqH8D
WOLVERINE IS FASTER THAN THOR:
This happened in Wolverine vs. Thor #2. Firstly, clarify that Wolverine had been tricked by Loki into believing that Thor was Sabretooth, so Wolverine was attacking with everything, while Thor was very restrained because he was trying to reason with his friend. Many interpret Thor's line "he is faster than I--" as Thor admitting that Wolverine is faster than him ("he is faster than me"). However, the phrase is accompanied by a double "-", which is used to express interruption in a dialogue. Thor was probably going to say "he is faster than I thought / expected." Once Thor got even remotely serious, he had no trouble putting Wolverine out of action. Plus, that comic isn't even canon. It is an exclusive digital comic, which does not belong to the official continuity, as well as a non-canonical complement to the comic Wolverine: Wendigo! #1.

SUPERMAN PRIME TORTURES MR MXYZPTLK:
This occurred in Countdown to Final Crisis #23. I already talked about this in my Prime post, but I will repeat it here. Mxyzptlk was in a deplorable state when he was trapped by Prime, having lost most (or all) of his powers, and this is something he reaffirms on two occasions. It is also stated that Mxyzptlk would have annihilated Prime if he were at the peak of his strength, waiting for Prime to run out of the power gained by the Guardian of the Universe.

THE THING KNOCKS GALACTUS:
This occurred in Fantastic Four #243 and is probably one of the most taken out of context scenes in comics history. Immediately after this occurred, we learned that Ben did not knock anyone out, but that Galactus's mind completely shut down before receiving the blow to avoid falling into madness, as Doctor Strange had attacked himself with the powerful Imagery spell. by Ikronn. The most important thing about this is that Galactus was dying and below his absolute minimum, evidenced by his shrinking size and confirmed moments later by Reed.

BATMAN SHOOTS AND "DEFEATS" DARKSEID:
This occurred in Final Crisis #6. Darkseid was occupying Dan Turpin's body and dying from his wounds from his fight against Orion. For his part, Batman shot Darkseid with the same bullet he had previously used to kill Orion; Said bullet was full of radion, a toxic substance for the new gods. However, Batman only shot Darkseid in the shoulder, thus keeping his oath not to kill. Darkseid on his part was not so compassionate and "murdered" Batman (not really) immediately afterwards.

THE AVENGERS KILL TWO BEYONDERS:
This occurred in New Avengers (2013) #32. In the same comic we are told that the beyonders the Avengers are fighting were manifestations, solid states that contained their essence. Or in short, avatars. This is supported by the strange robot-like appearance that these two beyonders have, to which many more are later added, despite the fact that at the beginning of that same instance the beyonders are shown to us with their typical appearance. So while the Avengers fought against true beyonders, they did not use their true forms in the fight, and therefore, their powers were much more limited.
https://imgur.com/a/Cg9lPBu
https://imgur.com/a/OWaXq93
https://imgur.com/a/zfLomE3
To further support my points with certain characters it is even explained why they do not use their real power such as:
Hulk:
Contrary to what many believe, Hulk is not an irrational monster who always fights with everything. As with Thor, Hulk is always holding back when he fights in populated areas or with innocents nearby. This is logical, since Hulk is limited by Banner's psyche from harming the planet. Amadeus Cho has come to theorize that Bruce Banner's subconscious restricts his maximum potential by calculating all external variables so that the Hulk can never hurt anyone. So the emerald giant rarely fights at his full capabilities or reaches his highest peaks of fury.
https://imgur.com/a/NkftBXM
https://imgur.com/a/nW32qBK
https://imgur.com/a/U1lcEcI
Thor:
Thor's best feats and/or the level of power that should be attributed to him are often questioned under the excuse that much less powerful opponents tend to hit him, dodge his attacks, resist his blows, etc. "Coincidentally", these fights are always on Earth and against beings much weaker than Thor, while his best feats are almost always off-planet and against cosmic-level adversaries. This is no coincidence: Thor greatly restricts his strength when he fights on Earth for fear of killing his opponents and damaging the planet.
https://imgur.com/a/GwCb7kj
No matter how powerful a mortal is, Thor will always use only a fraction of his power against him, even if it means losing the fight. The fear of murdering his opponents has led Thor to lose on many occasions, even though he could easily defeat them if he really wanted to. So when the writers make Thor look "bad" against mortal opponents and "good" against cosmic threats, they are simply being consistent with what was previously established about the character.
https://imgur.com/a/KZEMGnx
https://imgur.com/a/saKyn70
Superman:
To begin with, we must take into account that Superman always has a strong instinct to restrain himself, with the sole exception of Doomsday; So many of his "weaker" feats can be explained as Superman holding back too much. This impulse is not a simple plot device: in the prelude to "Our Worlds at War" we learned that, due to his fear of killing, Superman has a mental limiter that prevents him from using his full potential in combat.
https://imgur.com/a/GeFw1SQ
The limiter is subconscious, not conscious. Superman can't choose when to stop using it.
https://imgur.com/a/GeFw1SQ
Only until his training with Mongul II was he able to break said limiter and use his strength to the fullest. Superman himself states that up until that point he had always been holding back and had not had the opportunity to break through his mental barriers. This is especially true on Earth, where Superman never uses his full strength or speed to prevent further damage to the environment, especially in highly populated areas.
https://imgur.com/a/bFYi4tb
https://imgur.com/a/lAbnAOw
Silver surfer:
the Surfer almost always holds back. This is because Norrin is a consummate pacifist who appreciates all forms of life and does not like to resort to violence. Because of this, Norrin holds back a lot of his attacks and often allows herself to be hit, or even refuses to attack at all, for fear of killing his opponents.
https://imgur.com/a/UcWuPjX
https://imgur.com/a/ch2xjAC
https://imgur.com/a/a6M9jTB
The only exception to this is when he is faced with beings that are not actually alive or that he considers aberrations that should not exist, such as the inhabitants of the cancerverse. This is not limited to individual opponents, but also to the environment. Norrin frequently restrains the scale of his attacks to avoid collateral damage and destruction that could affect innocent civilians, especially when he fights on Earth.

CONCLUSIONS:
As we have seen, all these supposed outliers are nothing more than scenes taken from their original context (in many cases by people who read the instances where they happened, other times deliberately) to cause an impact on those who do not read comics and thus discredit Marvel/DC's writing and reaffirm their particular confirmation biases.
That said, I want to make it clear that I am not claiming that the comics do not have inconsistencies or moments that can be considered true outliers. I only ask everyone who is reading this to rethink their positions when deciding what is outlier and what is not, and from now on be more careful when examining the context of each situation. and more so when analyzing a comic character where, as in these cases, people are often intentionally made to believe a reality that is not the case or they even ignore the explanations about the characters when they are also important but you will never see them expose that kind of information because they are clearly nervous that it would mean that their favorite fictional monkey doesn't come out well and they want to give preference to their favorite verse.
Anyway, have a good day/afternoon/night or when you read this, and please read the post and stop taking things out of context or any phrase just because you don't like the truth.

2024.05.17 02:27 JDean_WAfricaStories [RF] The Tragic Tale of Howard [3] - No Employer wanted to even touch me

Previously
I could not tell you exactly how I failed my semester. Everything was foggy. One thing for sure, I recalled spending more time with Al than with my studies. With her, I discovered the ins and outs of Boston: its neighborhoods and surrounding towns. She would take me to different areas to countless parties, hosted by her friends. We would sing reggae together, dance , drink, smoke marijuana, a lot of marijuana, and, afterwards, would go to her place, where we would sleep together a lot like rabbits. The only time I ever set foot in my dorm room was near the end of the semester, where I came across a stack of urgent notes from my academic advisor. These notes pertained to my parents and, particularly, their demands that I should “call them at once!”
It was through my parents that I learned about my academic failure for the semester and how I failed: not attending a single class. Prior to calling, my plan was to keep quiet like I normally had done before and let them do all the talking. That was supposed to be the plan.
Upon dialing, my mother picked up the phone after the first tone and, without exchanging any pleasantries, proceeded to blast me with her sweet voice and biting sarcasms. I was the son “scamming them out of their hard earned money” and one who was doing something that I was “finally more than average at,” making them “shameful parents.” I expected all of this from her, but what caught me off guard was the raw anger in her voice. Still, I stayed silent and listened as usual.
My father, on the other hand, was far angrier and did not mince his words with sarcasms. After my mother had said her piece, he took the phone and cussed me all the names he knew under the sun, even cussing me in his mother’s tongue. His anger made his nasal voice even more pronounced, making it difficult for me to remain silent compared to my mother's words. It felt like each word was a punch to the ear through the phone. I fought to keep my composure, but frustration surged within me.
"Mary, I bet this whole thing is all over some stupid asshole girl." That blew me up. I took it as a direct insult to Al. He hadn't even met her, hadn't seen her warm smile or her inviting eyes. He hadn't experienced her nonjudgmental nature or known how easy she was to talk to. Yet, he felt he had the right to insult her.
“So what the fuck it is!” I remembered yelling over the phone. I remembered there was a brief, deafening silence after I spoke, so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. Mind you, at this point, I was no longer the same Howard that my parents were used to talking down to. They were exposed to a rude awakening. A different Howard who had long thick dreadlocks that stopped at his knees and who could look you directly in the eye and cussed you out like a seaman.
“Mister man. I want you to pack your things and take the next plane back home.” It was the clearest I ever heard his voice, without even a hint of nasalness. I could also hear his heavy breaths, like a silverback just before it was about to beat his chest and charge at you.
“Bite me.” I had answered him and hung up. That was the last time I talked to my parents. I had many regrets in life and this was among the top ones. Looking back now, I probably should not have done what I did. First off, I probably should have called them when I was off sound mind or sober. I also underestimated how cold and unforgiving my parents could be, and how far they would go to maintain their family's image. I had two younger brothers and a toddler age sister. When I did not take that next plane back home, my parents, as far as they were concerned, still had a legacy that they could build up and make their name proud, even after they left this world. I was the first child: the mistake and experiment that they could learn from when rearing up my siblings.
Not surprisingly, I was kicked out of MIT as my parents did not pay for my next semester’s schooling. I did not care at the time. At least, I had my Al and she was nice enough to offer rooming to my bicycle, suitcase and I. We were officially together under one roof. Only this was not to be permanent.
About a month after moving in with Al, we found ourselves in a situation where we couldn't afford the rent and had to move out. Al had lost her job a few weeks earlier because she showed up to it high, a decision I blamed myself for since I had encouraged us to attend a party the previous night.
Living with Al's friends was initially a relief, a temporary solution to our housing predicament. But as the days turned into weeks, we began to overstay our welcome. Our presence became a burden, straining the patience and resources of those free spirits who had graciously taken us in. Eventually, we found ourselves with no place to call home, facing the harsh reality of homelessness.
During this period, finding work proved to be a near impossible challenge. Despite my best efforts, no employer wanted to even touch me. It was then that I truly understood my immigration status on a student visa and the obstacles it presented to securing employment. Until then, I had never considered or entertained such thoughts, leaving them up to my parents.
The idea of marrying Al for a green card never even crossed my mind. I refused to burden her with my problems or pressure her into such a life-altering decision. One way or the other way, I was going to find a solution on my own.
Though it looked like a grim reality check, strangely enough, Al and I were the happiest when we were homelessness. Freed from the burdens of parental or societal expectations, we embraced our status as free birds in the city, viewing it as our own personal playground.
If there was no luck at the soup kitchens, we would scavenge food from trash bins by restaurants. Surprisingly, we often stumbled upon untouched treasures like whole pizzas, pieces of chicken wings, discarded birthday cakes (often anniversary cakes), pies, and many other items. People's wastefulness became a lifeline for us, and we were deeply thankful for it.
Beyond mere survival, we reveled in the adventure of exploring the city's hidden corners. From navigating the labyrinthine subway tracks to stumbling upon alleys adorned with vibrant street art to sneaking into buildings with magnificent views of the city’s skyline, every discovery fueled our sense of wonder and curiosity. And we certainly were not shy to fool around in all these places as no place in the city was safe from our escapades: not the museums and not even the stadium.
But even with all the craziness and unpredictability, the most important thing about being homeless was the bond we shared. I fondly recall the nights spent huddled together under the stars in quiet parks, wrapped in blankets and sharing our dreams. Al wanted to go back to school to pursue nursing, while I had ambitions of completing my engineering degree at a community college. With that qualification, I hoped to secure a well-paying job that could sponsor both of us, paving the way for us to settle in a cozy home in the suburbs. There, we could begin our journey of building a family together. Each time I shared my dreams with Al, her left blue moon eye seemed to radiate with an illuminating glow, serving as a source of hope and strengthening my determination to believe that anything was possible.
Eventually, I managed to secure employment the other way: under the table at a slaughterhouse. But even with a steady income, my wages were barely enough to cover our basic needs, let alone secure permanent housing. However, luck seemed to smile upon us in an unexpected way.
At the slaughterhouse, I crossed paths with a fellow countryman named Archie, who had faced similar challenges with work status. Our shared nationality sparked instant camaraderie, and Archie eagerly offered his assistance upon learning about our homelessness. He revealed that he had a friend at the Port of Boston who could help us find shelter in one of the abandoned shipping containers there.
Archie assured me that living in a shipping container wasn't as bad as it sounded, sharing his own experience of finding temporary refuge in one upon arriving in America. He explained that as the weather cooled with the onset of fall, we wouldn't have to endure the sweltering heat of summer. However, he advised us to prepare for the winter chill with plenty of blankets and, even better, a portable heater. Despite its unconventional nature, it was a far better option than braving the elements out on the streets.
As Archie led Al and I through the lively Port of Boston, I couldn't shake the feeling of gratitude for his unexpected generosity. Here was a man who did not know me from Adam and was offering to help me and my woman, with no payment or strings attached.
We soon arrived at a secluded corner, where Archie introduced us to his friend, JJ. JJ was a short, stocky man with large muscular arms, a stark contrast to Archie's tall and malnourished skinny frame. Despite their physical differences, JJ exuded friendliness and kindness, much like Archie. He welcomed Al and I very warmly. Hence the reason, I could never forgive myself for what I did to him. That was also one of my biggest life regrets.
With a nod from JJ, we followed him to an abandoned shipping container nestled away from prying eyes. It was a hidden gem, shielded from the outside world by stacks of cargo containers. JJ assured us that it was a safe haven, far from the scrutiny of port workers.
As we settled into our new home, JJ's kindness continued to shine through. He provided us with port safety jackets, ensuring we could blend in seamlessly with the workers. He even offered his assistance if we encountered any issues, emphasizing that he was always available at the main loading dock during his night shifts.
The shipping container began to feel more like home with each passing day. Thanks to Archie and JJ's assistance, we were able to transport an old mattress, dresser, and milk crates— repurposed as shelves— from various junk sites and donation bins using JJ's cargo van. Despite the simplicity of our accommodations, the mere presence of these familiar items filled us with tremendous joy as we finally had a place to call our home.
Al's creative touch transformed the interior, adorning it with artificial bouquets she had found at a dump site. The vibrant colors breathed life into our makeshift home, infusing it with warmth and charm.
As we settled into our newfound sanctuary, a wave of relief washed over us. For the first time in months, we felt a sense of stability and security. With our basic needs finally met, we could now turn our attention to our goals for the future.
Eager to continue my education, I made plans to dedicate myself to finishing my engineering degree once the upcoming winter months had passed. Little did I know at the time that my student visa had already been canceled, making this goal completely impossible. Being a youth and all its naivety.
However, I never got the chance to find out about my visa status or even make the attempt to finish my education. At the start of winter, Al went missing.
Next Part 4 Preview:
It was a wicked, cold-blooded anger that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I tried to release my hands from his shirt, but it was too late. He seized my wrists like a vise grip and, in one swift motion before I had time to react, picked me up, slamming me onto the concrete.

It was a wicked, cold-blooded anger that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I tried to release my hands from his shirt, but it was too late. He seized my wrists like a vise grip and, in one swift motion before I had time to react, picked me up, slamming me onto the concrete.

2024.05.17 02:19 JDean_WAfricaStories The Tragic Tale of Howard [3] - No employer wanted to even touch me

2024.05.17 02:07 itsasnaaaaake What are the "big ideas" in the Three Body Problem novels that people are blown away by?

TLDR: Three Body Problem feels like the Big Bang Theory of hard sci-fi.
It seems that everybody acknowledges the characterization and writing in general in the novels is pretty lackluster, but are blown away by the big ideas laid out by Cixin Liu. The novels are described as hard sci-fi, but as far as I can tell the big sci-fi ideas presented by Liu are mostly a hand-wavy mess and have been more deeply and competently explored in other novels. In isolation most of the hand-waving is fine just to keep the story rolling but taken together it makes the entire premise of the universe fall apart for me. Here's a few examples:

Xenolinguistics: pretty much completely glossed over in the novels, and completely hand-waved away by the "Self-Interpreting Code" developed by the Chinese. I'm generally ok with hand-waving away this problem, but IMO it would be less offensive if the Trisolarans as the advanced race had some sort of magic computer (the Sophons?) that could interpret our language. The Self-Interpreting Code is a prime example of Liu throwing sci-fi words at a problem to hand-wave it away and move the plot forward.
Other books that explore this topic:

Alien Societies: The implications of a planet that regularly undergoes cataclysmic disasters isn't really deeply explored. Everything about the Trisolarans is same-same-but-different to humanity. We only get a limited glimpse of their world, but there's a similar political hierarchy, evidently have similar enough language that communication is a breeze, have similar motivations. Even their hours and life-spans are about the same as ours. The hours stick out to me (one Trisolaran hour is ~53 minutes) -- Liu goes to the trouble of making a new time measurement system, but it's exactly the same as ours just slightly different without any explanation. (I recognize that they don't measure days or years since that would be meaningless which is a nice touch, and has also been done before)
Other books that explore this topic: Honestly there's too many to count, but one worth calling out is A Deepness In the Sky by Vernor Vinge, since that takes place on a planet with regular cataclysms as well, and is a much fuller exploration of those societies.

Higher and Lower Dimensions: I thought this had some potential, but to me was just another example of Liu throwing sci-fi sounding words at a problem to move the plot forward. There's superficial treatment of higher dimensions projecting onto ours at best and the rest of it devolves into mush pretty quickly.
Other books that explore this topic: Flatland by Edwin A. Abbott. A truly weird book that explores what life in a two-dimensional universe would be like.

I'm sure there are more, and this isn't even touching on simple technical issues in the plot that made me facepalm. (Prime example: the police force pulling out a scale during a raid to weigh the alleged nuclear weapons possessed by the ETO. Are SWAT teams regularly weighing things during raids?? If you're going to deus ex machina your way through here, just give them Geiger counters.). I'm seeing a lot of discourse give Liu a pass because of cultural differences, but as someone of Chinese descent I think this makes it seem like there's a bigger cultural gulf between East and West than there is between Trisolarans and humans. Chinese people aren't aliens.
I'm open to being wrong and I'd love to hear what other big ideas blew people away, but I'm a huge fan of hard sci-fi and this honestly felt like the Big Bang Theory of hard sci-fi: just enough sci-fi buzzwords to tickle readers' interest, just enough science that it sounds complicated and makes the reader feel like they've learned something, but no real depth to any of it.

"Jett Reno shines with sarcasm and humor in Star Trek: Discovery, making her a standout character despite limited screen time. Reno's colorful past includes smuggling and survival, adding layers to her character and making her even more intriguing. With the possibility of appearing in future Trek projects, Reno's memorable presence may continue to delight fans."

Quotes/Excerpts:
"Introduced in Star Trek: Discovery season 2 premiere, Reno joined the crew of the USS Discovery after she was rescued from the wreck of the medical frigate, the USS Hiawatha. Since then, Reno has served in engineering, helping Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) keep the Crossfield Class starship up and running.
Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 7, "Erigah" revealed more about Reno's past, which apparently includes working as a bartender, a shuttle pilot, and a smuggler, among others. While Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) and Ensign Adira Tal (Blu del Barrio) work to decipher the final Progenitors' clue, they seek information from Reno. Always busy working on the ship, Reno walks and talks, revealing pieces of her fascinating history. [...]
Comedian and actor Tig Notaro has imbued Reno with so much personality, that she makes a big impression with a small amount of screen time. [...]
Despite the trauma Reno has experienced, including losing her Soyousian wife during the Klingon War, she remains a breath of fresh air among the crew. Her no-nonsense attitude and ability to take every situation in stride make Jett an invaluable addition to the USS Discovery, and she's helped save the ship on multiple occasions. In some ways, Reno's sense of humor feels like a callback to Star Trek: The Original Series and Dr. Leonard McCoy's (DeForest Kelley) lovable irascibility. Although Reno only pops up a few episodes per Star Trek: Discovery season, her commentary and interactions with the other characters are often the highlight of the episode.
As revealed in Star Trek: Discovery's "Erigah," Commander Reno worked several different jobs before joining Starfleet. As Tilly and Adira search for answers about the last of the Progenitors' five clues, they learn Reno used to work with rare manuscripts. When they ask Jett about it, she replies that she "may have padded [her] résumé with that one." In reality, Reno smuggled old manuscripts. At Tilly's surprise, Reno lists off numerous "odd jobs" she had before Starfleet, including: "VIP shuttle pilot, deep mercury welder, [and] bartender at a cozy little dive on Ashalon Four."
This history fits Jett Reno perfectly, and she has added even more fantastical experiences to her life's story since joining the USS Discovery. Not only has she survived a starship crash and been stranded for nearly a year, but she has also traveled 930 years into the future. In Star Trek:Discovery season 4, Reno was abducted by Dr. Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) when she caught him sabotaging Discovery. Reno helped convince Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) that he had chosen the wrong side, and escaped Tarka's force field prison using black licorice and a spare communicator chip.
With the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery spin-off, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, the possibility remains open for Commander Reno or any other Discovery character to appear in the new series. While Reno doesn't seem a likely candidate for teaching Starfleet cadets, she would make a hilariously perfect guest lecturer. Considering this is Star Trek, there is also the possibility that time travel or some other science fiction solution could send Reno to one of the other ongoing Trek series. (If Ensigns Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) can cross over from Star Trek: Lower Decks to the live-action Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, then anything is possible.)
[...]
Whether or not Jett Reno appears in any future Star Trek projects, she remains one of Star Trek: Discovery's most memorable characters."

2024.05.17 01:31 zap12shirt Alternate ending to one piece

Imagine instead of us having an all out war , dragon , luffy and imu all have a heated discussion in mary geoise .. eventually its decided that therell be an election , so now we see all of them trying to compete in a "democratic" election , people cast votes and luffy loses but dragon wins ... imu respectfully leaves his spot and now dragon takes over the world , after a while he realises how good this feels so he kills trafalgar law by forcing him to perform immortality surgery , post this dragon rules the world for 800+ years this cycle repeates every 900years ( dragon turns into the new imu , until the new joyboy is born .. now joyboy isnt important as his only role is to lose the election everysingle time and every single time his father will be the true protag )
moral of the story : imu is the manifestation of human greed for power and is not just an entity , u may kill him but he'll come back
