2024.06.01 14:33 ThrowAway7s2 "Spanish teacher returns with his 'harem' intact" from the January 8, 1974 Door County Advocate

Spanish teacher returns with his 'harem' intact

Spanish teacher returns with his 'harem' intact

Aside from nearly losing one of the girls for 1,000 pesatas and 15 chickens at the Casbah in Tangiers the Sturgeon Bay high school students’ holiday trip to Spain came off without problems.
The 34 students, accompanied by Spanish teacher Robert Keberlein, Gus Abrahamson, Dr. and Mrs. Gerry Berg, left Dec. 27 to visit Tangier, Morocco, Gibraltar and Spain before returning Jan. 7.
According to Keberlein the trip this year was organized so the students were allowed a good deal of free time to mix with the people in Spain in addition to planned sightseeing tours.
The group started their adventures in Tangier with a trip through the Casbah (the native section of the city). Keberlein says a guide led the group and he followed up at the rear. At one time during the tour a native attempted to barter with Keberlein in exchange for some of the girls. “He offered me 1,000 pesetas and 15 chickens in exchange for one of the girls in my ‘harem.’”
In Morocco the group toured the Caves of Hercules and went for camel rides before departing on a ferry which took them across the Straits of Gibraltar, past the Rock of Gibraltar, to Spain.
“On New Year’s the students spent the evening with the Spanish. We took them downtown. Some went to the various discotheques and night clubs and some went with me,” Keberlein recalls. “The Spanish have a custom of eating 12 grapes in one minute beginning with the stroke of midnight.” He said everyone managed to down their 12 grapes.
Other sights of interest in Spain included the famous Moorish castle Alhambra, which was the last stronghold of the Moors in Spain. They also spent an afternoon at the Valley of the Fallen, the national monument dedicated to those who fell during the Spanish civil war in the 1930’s. This historic site is marked by a 50 story cement cross that stands at the entrance.
Keberlein explained how the students were introduced to the Spanish night life in Madrid. “Mr. and Mrs. Berg and I took the group to the older part of Madrid and they had to find their own way back to the hotel. It gave them a good chance to use their Spanish and no one got lost.”
Chaperone Jane Berg reports that the recent assassination of the premier of Spain had little effect on the people that country. “My friends there told me that it’s still the same type of government as before only with different faces.”
Mrs. Berg also said the Spanish are facing fewer restrictions, during the energy crisis than citizens in the United States. The streets and stores were still lit up for the holidays although they did cut back on the hours.
Keberlein said “People of this city can be proud of the way the students behaved. They were a credit to their country and their city.”

2024.06.01 13:54 fog_hornist How to get a better spell- and grammer-check for de-ch on a Linux-Installation?

(english as 4th foreign language; pls overread typos, or ask if something's unclear - might have been lost in translation, thanks!)
System: LibreOffice 7.3.7.2, Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon, hunspell de-de and de-ch-packages installed, incl. system- and libreoffice-language-packages are installed.
tl;dr: since both Ubuntu and Linux Mint made some severe changes to the system and how they deal with packages:
=> are there - next to hunspell - packages that need to be installed manually in LibreOffice OR LM21.3 to make spell- and grammer-check run smoothly?
Long version:
I got a realy big issue with LibreOffice' spell- and grammercheck. It's just a catastrophy. Totally normal "combined words" (like for eg "Funktionssammlung") are not recognised, the famous "dass/das" (the with or without strong s) are not recognised, and more. IF something is recognised as spelled wrong, i get the most funniest suggestions to fix the word; like "sowise" - instead of suggesting "sowie" ("as well as") i get so etwas, Sodium and more nonsense... Even simplest typos (i type very fast, mistakes happen) are not recognised.
I installed spellcheck-packages for de and de-ch, hunspell is installed, but no improvement.
At the moment, i have to send my documents to a friend of mine, who opens them in MS Office from forever ago and run its spellcheck on it - this can't be the solution!? I remember when i still used windows, and installed LibreOffice there - it was all fine, 2016 on linux, it worked also... but somehow down the road, it gotten worse...
What can i do to change this issue?

2024.06.01 12:35 Left-Finding6540 It's now June, I'm looking to make a thread of last minute tips, if anyone has any last minute tips for any subjects I'll add them

English: for section 1 question a on paper 1 use pqe, point quote explain, nake one point use a quote to back it up and explain, leave extra space after each point incase you have extra time to spend on it,alternatively a kind commentor added fhe following:Can I add one to English, from an English teacher. Instead of PQE, use PEEL . Point, Evidence, Explain and Link (to the next paragraph/back to the question). Will boost C mark.
Question b of that same question make sure if you write the text of a speech the whole text is said speech and if you have to for example write the text of a speech from a famous person you never step out of character. Your opening line should be basically a rephrasing of the question eg:write an article for the local newspaper, you should say "I am writing for the x newspaper to tell you about...", even if its unrealistic they still look for this in regard to your purpose mark.
For the composing:make sure there are famous people you can talk about a lot, also just a few topics that youve got some bit of knowledge on e.g ai might be handy
personal essay: use anecdotes even if they're made up
Short story:I'm avoiding this personally but make sure you show don't tell and alsondont leave plot holes, from what I've heard people who do this already have things like settings, characters and storylines planned out before the exam
Opinion essay: chose for or against and be strongly for or against, if im not mistaken you can be neutral but it's a lot harder
For the single text your first quote shouldn't be from act 1 scene 1 or your texts equivalent, your answer shouldn't be a summary
For hamlet: have lots of quotes, back in as many points as possible with quotes, remember the word regicide and antic-disposition, if the question asks about Claudius' role as villain if must only be his direct wrong doings (laertes, elder hamlet) and not the ones he indirectly caused by making hamlet mad (ophelia, polonius etc).
Comparative:constantly compare your 3 texts,(this next tip only applies if parf of your comparative course is never let me go) MOST of the time if you are doing the question 1 which is split up into a and b where a is in relation to 1 text and b is 2, never let me go will be in part a as it is hard to compare to other texts, this obviously depends on the question but if in doubt do that
Unseen poetry:I'm absolutely useless at this but on my mock I completely misunderstood the poem and got 17/20, waffle with confidence, don't spend too long on it as 20 marks is sweet fa in your English paper and the difference between spending 20 mins and 25 mins is no more than 3 marks. As a kind commentary added(soz days are long cba tagging everybody) backup using any poetic technique you can
Poetry: have one poem you can talk for days about no matter what, they will more than likely come up. Have 3 more you understand to be able to answer a question, then your perfectly covered. If you want to be more confident you can learn 2 poems to perfect 50/50 but from here to Thursday time management is important
History: if your a slow writer like me learn a metric fuck tonne of good quotes they're the quickest way to pick up marks, here's a few if you want them
Oh little sputnik flying high/with made-in-moscow-beep/you show the world its a commie sky/and uncle Sam's asleep-mennen Williams, democratic governor of michigan
The United States would provide political, military and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat from external and internal forces-the turman doctrine
We are kings men and well be with you to the end -james Craig (not precisely a long one but so many essays it could be used in)
I want dr king to know that I didn't come to selma to make his job difficult, I really did come thinking I could make it easier. If the white people realise what the alternative is, perhaps they will be more willing to here dr king-malcolm x
Also know the 3 document essays off by heart as one will defiently come up,somebody mentioned about knowing every case study off by heart and learning information rather than essays but that's more long term advice than last minute, still tho
Geography: from here to friday dedicate 10 minutes to aerial photography, it's 8 marks waiting to be claimed. Nows probably too late for flashcards but if it isn't fucking use them for srps
Maths: nows not too late to print off a mock or past paper, see what needs the most work and make sure you fully understand them
Irish: if your like me and haven't done a scratch there's still more than a week, predictions are your best friend, learn one essay, one poetry notes, one story notes and one play notes and let God decide how well he wants you to do
French:be able to write about the Olympics as if your fluent, its probably going to come up. Know your tenses and your subjunctive. Learn off a few proverbs they add marks to any essay. "Je suis tout à fait d'accord avec le declaration Ci dessus","il est neccesaire de pesser le pour et le contre", "n'oublions pas le proverbe" and "a Mon avis" fit into most opinion pieces, know them(get correct spelling aswel mine was affected by autocorrect). Also if your down to the wire learn diary phrased, even if you write a bad diary you will get marks for the phrases.
Somebody has pointed out its the 70 year anniversary of the d day bombings so bare that in mind too
Accounting: final accounts will come up,know 2/3, learn all your ratios and all the theory they will come up, know either budgeting or costing as one of each will come up, that leaves the second 100 marker, it will most likely be suspense as that comes up every second year but it could be a 60 marker, I wouldn't even bother worrying about anything else until ratios, final accounts, budget/costing and suspense are up to the grade your hoping for but if all that is sorted learn off maybe 3 other possible 100 markers, that any you have 4 which includes the 80% likely suspense and 2 will come up, the accounting exam is probably the easiest to predict, and for the love of God know your theory. Keep doing exam questions of your struggling, every time you correct one write down your mistakes and have the list of mistakes next to you when doing the next one, then tear it and make a new list of mistakes
Biology: If you know photosynthesis and respiration off from the back of the hand, you are good to go because there is a very high chance one or the other will be asked in some form (could even be a full 30-mark question if you are fortunate enough).
Business: Be 100% familiar with the ABQ strands (the comprehension can help you out a bit in finding the information for each question but you need to know the material that goes along with it from the heart). For Section 3: Defo know Strand 1 or 2 as that comes up as a question 1 or 2, Ratios as that can come up (caught me off guard when I did LC and made the difference between H1 and H2 for me unfortunately) and then would recommend preparing either strand 6 or 7 (or both if you wish for the final question you decide to attempt) Think if I recall you have to do one from Part A, one from Part B and then one other question from either part. Section A is an easy way to pick up marks so if you are struggling bank on Section A and B to get you going and make a decent stab at Section C and know section 1-3 inside out
This is all my experience, I will add any good advice for these subject or other subjects that are provided in the comments, all of these are for higher level except for maths, good luck, don't panic and think about the pint that's instore once this is all over

2024.06.01 11:12 AZPoggers420 Extra paper in Edexcel IGCSE English Literature P1

To summarise, I was attempting the poetry question (section B) about the theme of being alone in HPT and one other poem. I had set myself around 50-55 minutes for this question bcz I wanted to maximise my marks on it since i was pretty confident with the pairing. So basically I finished all the 6 pages we were given in approx. 50 mins and that was when I asked an invigilator for extra paper.
However, they told me that they weren't supplied with any extra paper and therefore I couldn't write any more This went against everything that my teachers, friends, and school told me so I immediately asked them to call the lead examiner. I wasn't too surprised because a similar incident had happened in my bio exam a few days earlier (but that didn't end up too bad bcz I only had a few extra lines to write).
Once the exam supervisor arrived, he said the same thing and told me Edexcel hadn't provided them with any extra sheets. I was getting quite nervous and frustrated and after numerous appeals, the head examiner told me to write my remaining response on the last page for section C (which was Of Mice and Men for me).
I tried to appeal and tell him that this would confuse the examiner and my response would be messed up but he wouldn't listen and considering that I had already wasted a few precious minutes during this conversation, I decided to listen to him.
So then i wrote an additional paragraph and a short conclusion on the last two pages given to use for Section C. I had labelled it as a continuation of the poetry question and had also written: GO TO THE LAST PAGE FOR CONTINUATION on the bottom of the last page for poetry. However, it was quite small and very cramped and messy so i'm worried the examiner might miss it and won't mark it.
the reason im scared is bcz my summary was rly good and it basically links everything which I analysed so without it I may not get a good mark. Also, the last two pages were kinda muddled up so my 5th paragraph was on the last page and my conclusion was on the second last page.
After the exam, I told this to my mother (who is an invigilator herself) and she met the head examiner herself and raised the issue with him. He confirmed that there would be no issues during marking. Surprisingly, another invigilator told us that they had extra paper all along and that there must have been a big misunderstanding (which I don't believe, i think it was a case of blatant laziness and ignorance).
Regardless, my parents raised this issue with senior members of the british council in my city (as i'm a private candidate) and they promised to get this issue fixed. However, I'm still worried about if the examienr would discredit those 1 and 1/2 pages which I wrote and if he was able to read my continuation message at the bottom of the page.
this whole issue has rly bummed me out because overall I found the exam easy and I was able to answer all the questions pretty well. so if any of you guys have any prior experiences with such circumstances or have any advice, please share it with me. Thanks.
TL;DR: examiner didn't give me extra paper and gave me incorrect instructions abt writing my response on the wrong section.

Hillary’s IG Stats Overview
  • May 2022 = 433 posts including the Chantecaille Episode = Hilz received lotions from luxury brand Chantecaille and posted a pic of Edu in a diaper with said lotions. The company didn’t repost, nor did they partner with her. Two days later, she donned her sewer slippers and accosted unsuspecting “needy” people, handing them gifts bags filled with Chantecaille lotions and $50 bills (and recorded herself doing so).
  • May 2023 = 18 posts including the infamous “humpy yoga” fiasco featuring unnerving eye contact.
Every choice in this video was wilder than the last.

~Recap~
  • May started with Alec appearing on the “Our Way with Paul Anka and Skip Bronson” podcast. I tried recapping it, but it was basically three boring privileged old white men rambling about their wealth and privilege. Anka’s description of living in a “Murdoch created” gated community near Malibu near the “good airport” – to avoid the unwashed masses at LAX one presumes – was where I gave up on the recap idea and just listened with a scowl.
  • Some lowlights:
On Having More Kids & Moving to Vermont
Alec: Well, in my family now, I'm the only person I know who drops four kids off at school in the morning and comes home and I still have three kids waiting for me. When I get home, I have seven - I have eight children. Ireland, my oldest daughter who's married, Ireland has a baby, and she and her boyfriend are living in Oregon. And I met my wife and I got remarried and I had seven kids in nine years. It's crazy. (I think you meant to say, “my wife is batshit crazy.” The devil is in the details, Zander)
And then, all of a sudden, I met my wife, who I love dearly, (I think he repeats this in virtually every interview to counter the years of talking shit about Kim Basinger) every time the baby would get to be two years old, we’d go, maybe it's time for one more baby, one more baby, so we have seven kids. But we're actually selling our house, moving to Vermont. We bought a place in Vermont, and I'm trying to get everybody to start to acclimate up there…I think my wife wants a little change of scenery now, it's so crowded out here…I love Vermont. It's so peaceful. We got a great deal. We got fifty-five acres; house was built in 1792. It's very pretty.
The Kids Want Alec Around All the Time
Host: What do you do away from your family? Meaning, do you play golf? Do you play tennis?
Alec: I play tennis all summer...The thing that's happened in these last ten years, especially the last three or four years, is my kids are used to me being around…I mean they really rely on that… when I'm gone, they're like, you know, they're on FaceTime. If I travel to go away for a couple of days to get a paycheck, they’re on my FaceTime going you know, where are you? What are you doing? You know, they're completely baffled when I go away. (God bless those kiddos and I’m preeetttttty sure they rely on Leonela/Leonetta a whole lot.)
Drug & Alcohol Use
Alec: Every day for two years, I think I snorted a line of cocaine from here to Saturn. We did one on the rings of Saturn. Then we came home. We took it back home. I mean, cocaine was like coffee back and everybody was doing it all day. I did a lot of coke and then I and then February 23rd, 1985…I stopped doing drugs and my drinking increased, which is they tell you that's going to happen, and that did happen. I just started drinking. I mean, and the thing, I miss drinking. I don't miss drugs at all, but I do miss drinking. I like to drink. (I appreciate next to nothing about this man, but I appreciate the honesty of this statement).
Host: But because you don't drink, and because you don't do drugs, what do you do? Do you meditate? What do you do to deal with the pressures of the outside, you know, forces, (I think you mean “lawsuits”, Paul) what do you do to get away from that?
Alec: (deadpan) Drink. I drink. I lied; I've been drinking nonstop since 1985. I lie. I tell people I'm sober and I drink my balls off. (Laughs) But no, I do miss drinking, I must say…New York relaxes me. I walk around and I see aspects of it that I've never seen before. I look at a building and I'll go, my god, I never noticed that about that building. Those doors. You know. New York is like a European city. You walk around and keep your eyes open. And I have lunches and coffee with my friends. (Um is he talking about the owner of Madman Espresso? Because that’s the only coffee related person we’ve ever seen him around.) And, I'd like to get out of here because the city is chaotic. (But also relaxing? What the hell?) But we live in the village. It's a little bit more residential. I love New York. I go to the symphony and the opera and the ballet all the time, you know, pretty regularly. But I do try to meditate. Meditating with seven children is like trying to play ping pong on the deck of an aircraft. It's a real pain in the ass. (But they rely on you, Alec?!?!)
  • Back on IG, Alec commented on a video that Ireland posted of Kim Basinger and Ireland’s partner, André, playing with baby Holland, apparently in the backyard of Kim’s home. The doting abuelo’s comment was “I know that pool deck!” – dude, say something, ANYTHING, about your daughter’s child.
He probably screamed at poor Kim on that pool deck.
An irate comment on Alec's IG: \"I cannot believe he is wearing street shoes on those floors!\" Now deleted.
  • People magazine published a puff piece entitled “Alec Baldwin Is 'Understandably Worried' as His Rust Involuntary Manslaughter Trial Looms” (Exclusive Source). Here’s the entirely of what the exclusive source Yoel had to say:
    • "Alec is stressed. He is understandably worried."
    • "He has an excellent legal team. I don't think anyone is thinking jail time but given the decision for Ms. Gutierrez-Reed it’s hard to know."
    • "You have to understand that at the end of the day Alec is a professional actor, so when he's on set, you wind him up, you say action, he pulls out the gun and does whatever he's supposed to do on his job. Then suddenly he's facing criminal charges. It's like, how did that even happen?"
  • In real news, the manslaughter charging document was released – interesting read!
  • Surprisingly, Alec did not post a tribute to his wife to honor her “mi cultura upbringing” on the first Sunday in May - when it's celebrated in Spain.
  • On May 6th, Alec’s lawyers vultures-for-hire filed additional motions to have the case dismissed while Said the Pap for hire posted a pic of himself with Crackhead Barney (who was wearing not much besides some Daisy Dukes a la Hillary Lynn) and Alec was spotted in the wild (with a nanny in tow, because only the peasants walk around without staff).
Imagine having to listen to this guy bloviate in addition to raising his kids.
A pepino prayer: Lord, keep the nannies safe and sane. Amen.
  • Over on his scintillating IG account, Alec posted the news that he will be co-directing a production of Macbeth with Geoffrey Horne for Shakespeare Downtown this summer. Good thing this will be in June, because there might be a bit of a scheduling conflict for Alec in July.
  • Alec posted two pictures of Edu: one totally scrunched in a too-small stroller and one making the patented Baldwin duck lips. Against all logic, the pic of the kid perched on a tiny stroller became the picture Alec chose as his new profile pic.
  • On Mother’s Day, Alec dug deep, looked back on his grid, landed on this picture he first posted in December 2023 and said, “this is the one!” It features Alec, his wife, one of their 7 kids, two very hungry caterpillars, and stars the ubiquitous Madman Espresso single use coffee cup. ¡Feliz día de la madre, Híláríá!
Low effort personified.
Obsessed with the one and only comment this video garnered: “what’s the stethoscope for?”
Oh Daniel, where to begin?
\"To be honest\" is not a phrase typically associated with Grifty McGrifter.
  • The day a judge heard the motion to throw out Alec’s indictment was also Romeo's birthday so Hillary posted a story (#2 of 5 posts) of her, Alec, and the birthday boy as well as a grid video collage set to John Lennon’s “Beautiful Boy” (#3 of 5 posts) – a solid choice, nothing bad to say here. Alec, on the other hand, did not make a happy birthday post but found time to repost a “Crush the Can” fundraising campaign video from the Baldwin Fund. These videos are not good, if only they had connections to folks the filmmaking industry…
Bye, Wig!
  • A public service announcement for the Reddit Cares brigade: not posting about a kid’s birthday on IG or not liking a family member’s IG post is not usually an issue. I am well aware that countless people live offline and exchange private messages; however, we are gathered here today and most days to talk about Alec and “Hilaria” Baldwin. They use social media, and IG in particular to cultivate a brand/façade/public persona. Given that, liking/not liking or posting/not posting is of note. This concludes our announcement.
  • Listen, at this point in the game, I am HERE for Said the Pap. I am just going to lean into the theory that he’s an agent of chaos and a savvy social critic because this picture is a true gift to this sub. Live long and prosper, amigo.
Tiny. Baby. Sewer. Slippers. And is she holding a phone?? Call for help, sweet pea.
  • On the day of Holland's first birthday, StepAbuela Hilly posted a “candid” shot of her and her three oldest boys, skipping through NYC in a light rain (post #4 of 5). When I tell you I cranked up the Gypsy Kings, poured a sangria, and flamenco flurried my way over to the comments – and was delighted:
    • u/FamousOhioAppleHorn: When I see a woman dressed like that in FL, I know she's gonna buy 5 Hour Energy, cigs and scratch off tickets while telling everyone her entire life story.
    • u/NightOwlsUnite: Subway...in fucking slippers. She's a walking germ factory. If and when the next pandemic hits, thank her.
    • u/smallpepino: Typhoid Larry.
    • u/Sun_will_rise_again: Those slippers are going to walk themselves to the trash…. They’re DONE, they’ve been through enough 🚮 Also this looks like something Britney Spears would write…. Just a jumble of random shit.
    • u/ ca17miledrive: There she is again. The Dope of Greenwich Village.
    • u/MallorcanMalarkey: The rain in Spain falls mainly on the insane.
So many pockets, so little sense.
  • Since Hilly is being so shy about showing her face. It’s a good thing the trusty folks at the Daily Mail have no such qualms. Alec and Guest Baldwin attended the 25th anniversary of a pretentious restaurant that gleefully reposted a picture of the duo calling them “amazing stars.” Restaurant Sirs, you have been bamboozled.
Maybe she should have kept the sweatshirt from the other day on her head?
MichWho was also there- if only Hillary's mallet could tap some life into the frozen tundra of Mich's mask/face.
  • Also, is this iteration of Hillary’s face giving Danielle Staub and/or Countess LuAnn vibes, or no?
Does one just ask for the squinty and taut special?
\"PeePaw\" just about took me out.
  • The next day a New Mexico judicial district judge denied the motion to dismiss the involuntary manslaughter case. This means that Alec must stand trial in July; sometimes the judicial system works in the interest of fairness. If nothing else, it is gratifying to know that he is spending through the nose to mount this legal defense.
  • With her usual ham-fisted timing, Hilz got to work and posted a grid video of Alec showing his phone to Ilaria Sin Hache (props to u/Longjumping-Stage647 for the moniker). It’s cute – who doesn’t love a baby in a onesie trying to talk and toddling around? Hilz for damn sure knows the value of her “vending machine of joy” and captioned her video: “I want dada, I want dada”….shes talking more and more. This is her first sentence 🤍. They love watching puppies together. The sweet things we are grateful for…that laughter. It calms the heart ⛅️”
23,791 of Hillary’s 989K followers liked this video.
  • Hilz responded to some comments and then a few zingers found their mark:
    • Commenter 1: Daddy’s little girl 💕💜💕💜
    • Hillary: “def…I was a little jealous…all our other 6 said mama first, but this one said dada 😂. All kidding aside…it’s such a beautiful relationship. Gives him life and strength ❤️”
    • Commenter 2: Such a sweet little one. I miss your updates. Come back ❤️
    • Hillary: I will…I promise 💚
    • Commenter 3: This is a cute sitcom. Far from reality as many things on social media. But cute and happy, and that is what we want to see. Not the maids, fights, and tantrums
    • Commenter 4: Awe so cute! Grandparents are the best!!!
  • May 26th was the two-year anniversary of Carol Baldwin’s passing and Alec posted a picture of the two of them captioned (verbatim): “two years ago today Your work continuesWe all miss you”
Alec was more effusive in his RIP post about Sam Rubin, an LA entertainment reporter who passed, than about Carol.
  • I offer you Billy Baldwin’s caption for the picture of himself and his mother the same day:
    • My Mom: Honey... HOOOOONNEEEEYY!!!
    • Me: Yeah Mom!!!
    • My Mom: Do me a favor??
    • Me: Sure Mom.
    • My Mom: Go grab me the... the... the whatchamacallit?
    • Me: The what?
    • My Mom: You know... the thingamajig that has that little doohickey on the side. It's in the kitchen junk drawer next to the whooziwhats!!!
    • This never meant the same thing twice but every time she said it... I knew exactly what she wanted. Gone two years today. Smart, funny, tough, wacky, wild... and a heart of gold. Miss you dearest Mama!!! ♥️
  • Maybe Alec couldn’t focus on a more heartfelt tribute to his mother because was distracted by his wife’s unusual move of taking an Uber – quite normal for many but for Hillary My Ancestors Arrived on the Mayflower Hayward- Thomas, it’s usually a private car double parked for maximum chaos or sewer slippers slapping against the grime of NYC sidewalks, so this middle ground must have been confusing for PeePaw.
Your body is nice, Hillary. You don't need the alien appendages on the right or the multiple bras at once on the left.
  • Alec’s defense team added 9 new witnesses on the last day they were permitted to do so (5/6/24) and did not provide witness statements. Prosecutors argued that this was done in bad faith and that “the State has now been prejudiced by the defendant's strategy to gain a tactical advantage as the State is unable to file pretrial motions as it relates to the new witnesses, is unable to properly investigate the statements of the witnesses and list its own new witnesses to refute the testimony of the belatedly disclosed witnesses.” So on 5/31, the prosecutors moved to exclude the witnesses from the trial. Stay tuned…
  • As this legal mess was going down, Alec and Hillary made their signature move: a staged pap walk in NYC wearing ill-fitting clothes, clutching phones and Madman Espresso products. How the mightily mediocre have fallen…
The unfiltered images must be...something else.

Cataract surgery is required to restore vision damaged by the clouding of the eye's natural lens. In Gurgaon, one of the most famous specialist in this field is Dr. Keya Barman, a highly respected ophthalmologist known for her expertise, patient-centric approach, and use of advanced surgical techniques.
A cataract is a condition where the eye's lens becomes progressively unclear, leading to blurred vision and, if untreated, blindness. It is commonly associated with ageing, but other factors like diabetes, smoking, and long exposure to sunlight can also contribute to its development. The only effective treatment for cataracts is surgical intervention, replacing the cloudy lens with a clear artificial one.
Dr. Keya Barman is a leading ophthalmologist in Gurgaon, and she is recognized for her extensive experience and dedication to patient care. She holds advanced degrees in ophthalmology and has completed specialized training in cataract surgery, making her one of the most sought-after eye surgeons in the region. Barman Eye Care is equipped with advanced technology and the highest standard of care.

Each patient undergoes a thorough eye examination, including measurements of the eye to determine the appropriate power of the intraocular lens (IOL) to be injected, also discusses the types of IOLs available, including monofocal, multifocal, and toric lenses, based on the patient's lifestyle and vision needs. The surgery is usually done under local anaesthesia, with the patient awake but the eye area numbed. This minimizes risks and promotes quicker recovery. The latest phacoemulsification technique uses a small ultrasonic search inserted into the eye to break up (emulsify) the cloudy lens into tiny pieces.
After the cataract is removed, a clear IOL is inserted into the same place where the natural lens used to be. This lens remains permanently in the eye, providing improved vision. Post-surgery, Dr Barman offers detailed instructions on eye care, including the use of specified eye drops to prevent infection and inflammation.

Care and Recovery: Prescribed eye drops to prevent infection and reduce inflammation. Regular check-ups to monitor healing and address any concerns. Guidance on activity restrictions, eye care routines, and signs to watch for potential complications.

Dr Keya Barman is a trusted name in the field of ophthalmology. She is dedicated to excellence in eye care procedures, medicine, and eye drops. She is committed to providing personalized care using advanced methods and modern technology. Here, you can find several options for your treatment and surgery that best suit your needs. 2024.06.01 08:28 rsodead-0531 looking for a lost horror book

im not a native English speaker, so sorry if my English is junky.
basically i read this Dr. seuss kind of childrens storybook when i was 7 or 8, probably when i was very young and just started learning English. I remember the artstyle being very similar to a Seuss book, but the colors only being in black and white. I think it was a collection of short stories but i might be wrong.
one story i remember clearly is about this guy's gf who wears a red scarf all the time, and as they got older and the gf got sick. the doctors didnt know what was wrong with her, and in her final moments, she takes her scarf off, showing her decapitated head that fell on the floor. i remember the scarf being the only thing colored in the entire story. the final page was a picture of the gf's head on the floor with the red scarf, with the sentence "and (gfs name)'s head fell off." I think her name was Jenny or smth but i might be wrong.
anyone plz help me, any information would be greatful. the book really shocked me as a kid, and i want to find it for peace of mind. i dont think its possible for it to not exist, since i can remember it clearly.

2024.06.01 08:10 BunnyHenTa1 Laments about the post-confession chapters

After rewatching the 3 seasons of the anime a few times and absolutely loving it, I've made the decision to read the source material starting with the very first chapter. I have just finished the challenger finale with Taichi losing to Arata in the goofiest way possible and would now like to voice some complaints about the post-season 3 era of the story. If it's okay with you of course.
I have read some discussions and will attempt not to be repetitive with my points.
  1. The first years. With Taichi going on what is stylized to be his villain arc and Chihaya going on a study spree to cope with her feelings, the new first years are given a challenge to become memorable and exciting while all that other incredible and exciting stuff is already going on around them. And boy did they not deliver. There are 4 new characters but for the purposes of the narrative they act like 2 characters: Tamaru and generic first-years (GFY). Sure they all have quirks to be distinguishable but not one of them has a compelling journey or a goal.
The first conflict that GFY face is not vibing with the karuta club and it is solved with the seniors just talking to them, there are no interesting one-on-one interactions here like there were with the construction of the OG club (Chihaya learning to see poems as colourful from Kana for example), it is delivered as a series of short comedic sketches. And that's because they are not individual characters, they are a representation of a group.
And Tamaru's arc was about not requiring the praise of others I think?
To see this point clearly, compare how Tsukuba and best girl Sumire were introduced to how the GFY are. There is an obvious discrepancy in depth.
  1. Karuta matches.
Now, this is something that was a problem with the manga from the beginning. Here is how a match between character A and character B would go: Character A takes a card; the spectators: "OMG A IS GOING TO WIN"; B has a revelation in their inner monologue and take a card; the spectators: "OMG SINCE WHEN IS B SO STRONG MAYBE THEY WILL WIN"; A has a different revelation and take a card; repeat; Now, of course there are matches where the tactics are very interesting (Harada vs Suou), where every take is an emotional rollercoaster (Taichi vs Chihaya) or where the whole thing is just poetic to the bone (Harada vs Arata), but that is not the case with filler tournament matches. They are a massive yawn. I cannot be expected to be excited over a bunch of chapters about the new hokou team most of which I don't care about, the new fujisaki team most of which I don't care about and Arata's team which consists of people I could not care less about.
It's just a bunch of characters I don't know competing in generic matches (though there were some funny moments). And worst of all, I have no investment in who wins. In second year it was Mizusawa's dream to be the strongest in japan, a dream they worked through blood sweat and tears to achieve, so of course I was invested.
Here I was just waiting for more Taichi and Suou content.
  1. Suou and Shinobu
Oh, this one isn't a complaint. The author ansolutely killed it with these two, absolute perfection.
  1. Dirty tricks
This is a segway to the Taichi vs Arata match.
So, Taichi learns from Suou a lot of things: incredible perception, feints, detachment, fun. These are his weapons with which he manages to breeze through the challenger qualifier matches. But in his match against Arata he considers them off limits. Nishida even says something to the effect of "we want Arata to see us, real us, no dirty tricks or anything". Taichi doesn't use feints, doesn't try to mess with Arata starting with the second match and is not detached. Like bro.
Harada has bad hearing and uses different techniques to compensate for it, those are not considered dirty tricks. Arata doesn't have extraordinary hearing and so uses cross sweeps, those are not considered dirty tricks. So why does Mashima feel the need to abandon all of his weapons to play "true" karuta? Makes me mad.
  1. The incredibly goofy Taichi loss.
What I find hillarious about his loss is that during the second game he decides that "winning cannot not matter" and that he will play Harada's karuta. In any other circumstance, heck, in any shounen manga this would be the moment where he strengthens his resolve and gains an unforseen power boost. But instead he just starts panicking and sweating and stuttering and losing by 18 cards. Goofiest stuff I've read in a while.
But on a more serious note, Taichi 100% should have a skill on par with Arata. He was able to completely toy with Sudou, controlling the game completely. He had very close two matches with Arata. I find it rediculously contrived that he just decides to not use his strongest weapons and play bad. That's literally what happens, he decides to play bad and loses. From a narrative standpoint it would also be more interesting if Taichi won, at the very least because he is a much more interesting character and because Arata could use a massive setback like that for character development (which is nonexistant as it stands now).
  1. Nothing exciting happens
Harada's path to challenging Suou is one of my favourite arcs in fiction. Nothing that grandiouse happens after Taichi's confession.
On a more personal note, I am greatly saddened that best girl Sumire doesn't have much to do. She is still only enamoured by Mashima (as we can see from her talk with Mamashima). Like, girl, find a new target or become a rock star or date Nishida idk. Do something. Oh, and Kana's dream of becoming a reader has evaporated too it seems.
--‐------------- Sorry for the long post, it seems I got really frustrated and disappointed.
TL;DR
  1. The new characters are a yawn, have no journey and are not built up like previous first years were.
  2. The national tournament is overshadowed by Taichi's arc and there is no good reason to care about its outcome. The matches are repetitive and formulaic, the characters uninteresting.
  3. Shinobu and Suou's arcs are perfection.
  4. Taichi learns a lot of techniques but dismisses them as dirty tricjs for no apparent reason. Btw, shouldn't feints be considered even harder that normal karuta if anything?
  5. Mashima gets a stereotypical shounen boost (for no good reason btw) just to revert to a blabbering baby in the third match.
  6. Nothing grand happens. OG characters are left behind. Like, imagine Chitose learning karuta and becoming queen before Chihaya (joking).

2024.06.01 07:50 Nasokin Want some ideas about my name

Hi everyone! My first name means “river & sky” which came from a famous Chinese poem “Spring Blossoms On The Moonlit River”: “River and sky becomes one, with not the finest of dust, Shining brightly in the sky is that lone wheel of a moon. By this riverside, what person was first to see the moon? This river’s moon, what year did it first shine upon the people?”
I’m wondering choosing a cute natural English? (alphabet?? I also think words originally from Français or Deutsch are also interesting) name 💭 Any ideas?

2024.06.01 06:15 Abelhawk What are some underrated instrumental songs from film soundtracks?

I sometimes forget how amazing certain soundtrack tracks are to listen to them on their own without the noise and dialog of a film. Here are a few of my favorites:
Let me know what ones you like or think are underrated. I'm only looking for ones from films that are instrumental and have a distinct catchy tune in them that goes beyond being merely atmospheric.

2024.06.01 05:14 eric_bidegain NYT: “Women are increasingly reporting sexual harassment and abuse in the sport, including accusations against the renowned climber Nirmal Purja.”

NYT: “Women are increasingly reporting sexual harassment and abuse in the sport, including accusations against the renowned climber Nirmal Purja.”
May 31, 2024 —
In a memoir published in December, the professional mountaineer and former Miss Finland Lotta Hintsa briefly described an upsetting incident with a “very famous male climber” whom she didn’t name.
During a March 2023 business discussion in the man’s hotel suite in Kathmandu, Nepal, he “kissed Lotta completely without warning,” Ms. Hintsa and her co-author wrote in the Finnish-language book, “The Mountains of My Life 2.” “The situation was absurd, unreal and unpleasant.”
But in interviews with The New York Times, Ms. Hintsa said her experience was more disturbing than she had described in the book. And her story highlights a concern that women in the climbing world are starting to talk about more openly.
Ms. Hintsa said the man was Nirmal Purja, whose successful 2019 quest to climb all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks in record time was chronicled in a popular Netflix documentary. She said he led her to the bedroom, pulled off her shirt, trekking shorts and underwear and tried to remove her bra. She said she repeatedly told him no and offered excuses to get him to stop without agitating him. The episode ended with him masturbating next to her, she said.
“I just need to get out of this and pretend that it never happened,” Ms. Hintsa, 35, recalled thinking at the time.
Through his lawyer, Mr. Purja declined requests for an interview. The lawyer, Philip M. Kelly, said in a written statement that Mr. Purja “unequivocally denies the allegations of wrongdoing. These allegations are false and defamatory.”
As high-altitude mountaineering has gained popularity, women have become increasingly visible and formidable in a sport still largely dominated by men. Statistics from Mount Everest speak to the trend: Last year, 65 women reached the summit — about 10 percent of the climbers who summited — up from 45 in 2013 and just 10 in 2003, according to the Himalayan Database.
But in recent years, members of the broader climbing community have acknowledged that the sport comes with unseen risks, especially for women. More and more women in the sport, which includes everything from indoor rock climbing to ascending snowy peaks, are coming forward to talk about moments they’ve described as unsettling or worse.
In 2019, a group of professional female rock climbers started an Instagram account “about the ridiculous and inappropriate messages, photos, and solicitations we receive in our DMs,” one of the women said in a social media post. The account, whose creators said it was later shut down by Instagram, shared screenshots of harassing messages sent to women in the sport.
In February, a 39-year-old climber named Charles Barrett was convicted of three counts of sexual abuse for repeatedly assaulting a woman who was visiting Yosemite National Park for a weekend hiking trip in 2016. The U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of California said in a statement that Mr. Barrett had “used his renown and physical presence as a rock climber to lure and intimidate victims who were part of the rock-climbing community.”
And in interviews with The Times, Ms. Hintsa and another woman, a former client of Mr. Purja’s high-altitude guiding company, described experiences in recent years in which he kissed them without consent, made aggressive advances or touched them sexually against their wishes. They said they felt powerless and wary of angering Mr. Purja.
“I didn’t know what to do,” recalled Dr. April Leonardo, a family physician from Quincy, Calif. She said Mr. Purja repeatedly grabbed, kissed and propositioned her during an expedition to K2, the world’s second-tallest mountain. “I’m on this crazy climb. He’s my guide. I don’t want to do anything to put myself in jeopardy.” The statement from Mr. Purja’s lawyer also unequivocally denied Dr. Leonardo’s allegations.
Soon after the encounters the women described having with Mr. Purja, they shared their stories with friends and relatives and sent them text messages about their experiences. The Times reviewed the text messages and confirmed the conversations with the other people.
The outdoor recreation world has started to address sexual abuse and harassment, though haltingly. In response to the #MeToo movement, members of the United States climbing community created an initiative in 2018 called #SafeOutside to study the scope of the problem in the sport. The organizers surveyed more than 5,000 climbers from over 60 countries and found that 47 percent of women and 16 percent of men said they had been subjected to unwanted sexual behavior while climbing. And a few months ago, The Mountaineers, an outdoor recreation group in the Pacific Northwest, created a sexual harassment and assault prevention advisory committee to address the risk among its 15,000 members.
But it’s nothing new for women to feel mistreated in the sport.
“It’s the most vulnerable position I can imagine being in,” said Alison Levine, the captain of the first American women’s Everest expedition in 2002, who said she experienced verbal abuse and threatening behavior from a guide during that trip. The climbers turned back short of the summit as weather conditions deteriorated.
Ms. Levine continued, “The thing that was most challenging, the scariest, and produced the most anxiety and fear on that mountain came from a human, not the environment.” She didn’t return to the big mountains for another five years, then went back to Everest in 2010 and reached the summit.
“There is so much inherent risk in the environment itself,” she said. “When you add in risk from interpersonal relationships, that makes it even more frightening.”
This month, hundreds of climbers scaled Everest and other Himalayan peaks. Above 8,000 meters (about 26,000 feet), they enter what is known as the Death Zone, where there is not enough oxygen to sustain human life for long and they expose themselves to hazards like frostbite, icefall, crevasses and high-altitude pulmonary or cerebral edema. Eighteen climbers died on Everest during the spring 2023 season, and this year five have died and three have been reported missing.
Clients pay tens of thousands of dollars to attempt these ascents — Everest expeditions start at around $40,000 and can cost six figures for a more luxurious experience — and entrust their guides with their lives.
Mr. Purja, 40, is one of mountaineering’s most recognizable and influential figures, with more than two million followers on Instagram. Known as Nims, he’s a naturalized citizen of Britain, where he lives with his wife and young daughter. But in his native Nepal he is revered as the kind of climbing superstar the country hasn’t seen since Tenzing Norgay completed the first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 alongside Sir Edmund Hillary.
Through his guiding company, Elite Exped, Mr. Purja has helped usher in a new era of commercial climbing on the world’s tallest peaks and has encouraged women on social media to take part.
He has guided high-profile female clients like Asma Al Thani, a member of the Qatari royal family, and the Russian model Victoria Bonya. “Thanks for inspiring me to push my limits. I’m grateful for everything you taught me,” a Swiss climber named Christine Vogondy posted on social media last fall, with a photo of her and Mr. Purja atop Gasherbrum I in Pakistan.
Ms. Hintsa, who became a professional climber in 2018, crossed paths with Mr. Purja at base camps in Nepal and Pakistan while on the climbing circuit. They corresponded intermittently about expeditions they were taking, and Mr. Purja invited her to guide for his company.
Mr. Purja was often flirtatious in those text messages and in exchanges with Dr. Leonardo, according to a review of the messages by The Times. The women sometimes bantered back, and Ms. Hintsa, a former Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, once sent a photo of herself from the magazine. Often, though, the women changed the subject or didn’t respond.
Ms. Hintsa and Mr. Purja agreed to meet in Kathmandu in March 2023 to discuss working together on an expedition Ms. Hintsa was organizing. Mr. Purja suggested having coffee in his hotel suite to avoid the attention he would get in the lobby, Ms. Hintsa recalled.
Given the tenor of some of their earlier text messages, Ms. Hintsa said, she sought to draw clear boundaries. She said she texted Mr. Purja on WhatsApp that this was “not a booty call,” and that he replied agreeing that it was not. Ms. Hintsa no longer has this text exchange because Mr. Purja’s app was set to make messages in their chat disappear after seven days.
In Mr. Purja’s suite at the Marriott on March 30, Ms. Hintsa recalled, she was “frozen” and “confused” as he led her to the bed. She said she felt like she was having an out-of-body experience as he removed her clothes even as she continued to say no. She told him she had her period, she said, but he didn’t stop. At one point he touched her vagina, she said.
“I can’t get through to him. He’s in this extremely aroused state where a ‘No’ means nothing,” Ms. Hintsa recalled. She said she was afraid to agitate him because of his strength and the training he’d received in Britain’s military, including its special forces.
She said that Mr. Purja appeared to grow frustrated as she continued to refuse him and that he seemed to lose interest after she physically resisted his removing her bra. She described feeling relieved when he began to masturbate, hopeful that the episode would soon be over.
Mr. Purja then showered, she said, which gave her time to compose herself and get dressed. They left the room and he showed her the store he operates at the Marriott, then asked a driver to take her to her hotel, she said. Mr. Purja behaved as if nothing had happened, she said. That day, Ms. Hintsa texted a friend describing her experience. The Times reviewed the message. Later, she recounted it in person to the friend, Heidi Paananen, who confirmed their conversation.
A driver for Mr. Purja, Krishna Bahadur Tamang, said in a written statement provided by Mr. Purja’s lawyer that he took Mr. Purja to the Marriott that morning. He said Mr. Purja returned to the car “within 20 minutes.” Ms. Hintsa recalled being at the hotel with Mr. Purja for close to an hour, and she provided time-stamped photos she took that day on her way to meet Mr. Purja and at his store. They corroborated her timeline.
Ms. Hintsa did not end up doing business with Mr. Purja’s company.
Outdoor sports have unique risk factors for sexual harassment and misconduct, said Gina McClard, an Oregon lawyer specializing in gender-based violence prevention. In 2019, she co-founded a consultancy called Respect Outside that works with outdoor recreation groups such as mountaineering clubs and guide services on policies, procedures and trainings to prevent sexual harassment and discrimination.
These activities can entail weekslong expeditions to remote settings, where participants live and sleep in close quarters. The culture surrounding outdoor sports, which celebrates pushing boundaries and glorifies people who pull off rare feats, may also create situations where inappropriate behavior goes unchecked, she said.
“Much of the outdoor industry is still an ‘old boys’ network,” Ms. McClard said in an email. “If you do not conform to how things are done, you may find yourself marginalized and iced out of the club.”
Mr. Barrett, the climber who was convicted of sexual abuse this year, is set to be sentenced on Tuesday. He was prosecuted in part because of the 2018 #SafeOutside survey, according to court filings earlier reported by Outside Magazine. The woman he assaulted answered the survey saying she had been raped by a “well-known, professional California climber” on a trip to Yosemite. Another respondent said she had been sexually assaulted by the houseguest of a professional climber she was visiting. Survey organizers followed up with the women and connected them after they both identified Mr. Barrett as the person who had assaulted them. The Yosemite hiker reported Mr. Barrett to the authorities in 2020.
Mr. Barrett’s was a familiar name in California rock climbing. He wrote guidebooks on bouldering in popular areas like Mammoth and Bishop, and he ascended difficult routes with the famous American rock climber Alex Honnold. A 2016 profile in Climbing Magazine, later taken down from the website, described Mr. Barrett as “a master of the California climbing game.”
He was living and working in Yosemite at the time of the assault of the female hiker. Mr. Barrett “violently raped” her after inviting her into the woods to watch a meteor shower, prosecutors said, and also assaulted her during a hike and in the employee housing area. Three other women, including the other survey respondent, testified at his trial that he had sexually assaulted them. Those incidents happened outside federal jurisdiction, and state prosecutors did not bring charges.
Based on her work with groups throughout the outdoor industry, Ms. McClard said that company policies rarely extend beyond physical safety to include psychological or emotional safety of clients and employees. Most smaller outdoor companies don’t have in-house human resources departments, she said, and bigger players in the industry have not invested the time or money that she believes this issue requires.
“There’s no industrywide movement,” she said. “I feel like we are alone in what we’re doing on sexual harassment in the outdoor industry.”
Dr. Leonardo, 41, the California physician, met Mr. Purja at a teahouse in Nepal in 2021 before she summited Mount Everest with a different company. She later learned that he was organizing a guided ascent of K2 the following summer. Drawn in part by the danger of the climb, she signed up, paying $55,000 for the two-month trip, which began in June 2022.
After arriving at K2 base camp, at about 17,000 feet, the team held a puja, a ceremony to pay respect to the mountain and ask for safe passage. She recalled that during the celebration afterward, she was looking for a trash bag and ran into Mr. Purja, who took her to a storage tent to get one. As she turned to leave, she said, Mr. Purja grabbed her arm, pulled her close and kissed her. She recalled Mr. Purja then saying, “I will have you.” Stunned and unsure of what to do, she said, she walked out.
“I just feel like I need to avoid him and keep anything from happening, but I’m afraid to do or say anything about it,” Dr. Leonardo recalled thinking. Another climber on the mountain at the time said Dr. Leonardo told him during her trip that she and Mr. Purja had had this interaction and that she did not want to be alone with him. The person asked not to be named for fear of professional or personal repercussions.
On another occasion, Dr. Leonardo said, Mr. Purja showed up uninvited at her tent. She was in her sleeping bag, wearing a shirt and underwear, she recalled, and he crouched next to her and said he wanted to check on her knee, which she had injured. Mr. Purja reached inside her sleeping bag, which made her feel panicked, she said, so she quickly pulled her leg out. He kissed her, she said, and grabbed her hand and placed it on his crotch, forcing her to feel his erect penis through his pants. She said she felt trapped in her sleeping bag, unable to leave because she wasn’t dressed.
According to Dr. Leonardo, Mr. Purja told her he wanted to have sex with her but had to wait until no one was around, and then left.
Another time, she said, Mr. Purja grabbed her arm while she was walking alone through camp and asked, “When can I mount you?” He suggested they go to her tent, she said, but she made excuses.
Dr. Leonardo sent her father, Leon Leonardo, a text during her trip saying that Mr. Purja kept trying to have sex with her. “Not ok,” she wrote in the message, which was reviewed by The Times.
Two employees of Elite Exped on Dr. Leonardo’s K2 expedition, Chandra Bahadur Tamang, the head chef, and Ramesh Gurung, a senior guide, said in statements provided by Mr. Purja’s lawyer that they provided security for the storage tent because it contained valuable items and that Mr. Purja never went inside it during the expedition. Dr. Leonardo said people were often around the tent but no one was there when she and Mr. Purja briefly went inside.
Another senior guide, Pasang Tendi Sherpa, said in a statement that Mr. Purja “was not in any private setting” with Dr. Leonardo during the trip. Pasang Tendi Sherpa’s statement did not explain how he knew that and he did not respond to interview requests. Mr. Gurung did not agree to an interview. The Times could not reach Chandra Bahadur Tamang.
For several months after the trip, Dr. Leonardo had cordial text exchanges with Mr. Purja, partly because she was waiting for reimbursement for some lost gear, she said. She didn’t see him again.
The women who spoke to The Times about Mr. Purja said that they didn’t know what recourse they had. Elite Exped is a small company run by Mr. Purja, and because the incidents happened outside their home countries, the women weren’t sure what to do. They did not alert law enforcement or other authorities.
Ms. Hintsa said she was telling her story in hopes of making the male-dominated sport of mountaineering safer for women. Only with time has she come to understand the effects of her experience.
“I hadn’t realized the scars that it had left,” she said. “It has made me realize that it’s not only the rock fall or the avalanches that are dangerous for a female climber.”
Mr. Purja’s star has continued to rise. As a face of high-altitude climbing, he has worked with major companies like Red Bull and Nike, which this past winter released a clothing collection inspired by Mr. Purja, called 8K Peaks, and featured him in a towering Manhattan billboard. In December he received an honorary doctorate from Loughborough University in England. Outdoor brands including Grivel, Osprey and Scarpa have worked with him on co-branded products.
Dr. Leonardo’s achievement of summiting K2, she said, was tainted by what she experienced. She hopes that sharing her account will help other women avoid a similar scenario.
“I can’t let it keep happening,” Dr. Leonardo said, adding: “I don’t want another woman to have to go through this.”

2024.06.01 05:07 MirkWorks Excerpt from The Culture of Narcissism by Christopher Lasch (The Banality of Pseudo-Self-Awareness & The Socialization of Reproduction and the Collapse of Authority)

IV. The Banality of Pseudo-Self-Awareness: Theatrics of Politics and Everyday Existence
...
Hero Worship and Narcissistic Idealization
On the fringes of the radical movement, many tortured spirits actively sought a martyrdom made doubly attractive by the glamour of modern publicity. The left, with its vision of social upheaval, has always attracted more than its share of lunatics, but the media have conferred a curious sort of legitimacy on antisocial acts merely by reporting them. The streaker at a football game becomes for a moment the center of all eyes. The criminal who murders or kidnaps a celebrity takes on the glamour of his victim. The Manson gang with their murder of Sharon Tate and her friends, the Symbionese Liberation Army with its abduction of Patty Hearst, share with the presidential assassins and would-be assassins of recent years a similar psychology. Such people display, in exaggerated form, the prevailing obsession with celebrity and a determination to achieve it even at the cost of rational self-interest and personal safety. The narcissist divides society into two groups: the rich, great, and famous on the one hand and the common herd on the other. Narcissistic patients, according to Kernberg, “are afraid of not belonging to the company of the great, rich, and powerful, and of belonging instead to the ‘mediocre,’ by which they mean worthless and despicable rather than ‘average’ in the ordinary sense of the term.” They worship heroes only to turn against them when their heroes disappoint them. “Unconsciously fixated on an idealized self-object for which they continue to year, … such persons are forever searching for external omnipotent powers from whose support and approval they attempt to derive strength.” Thus the presidential assassin establishes with his victim a deadly intimacy, follows his movements, attaches himself to his rising star. The machinery of mass promotion, encourages this identification by simultaneously exalting and humanizing the Olympians, endowing them with the same appetites and eccentricities that we recognize in our neighbors. Through his desperate act, the assassin or would-be assassin joins their exalted company. Assassination itself becomes a form of spectacle, and the inner lives of assassins - Oswald’s difficulties with Marina, the state of Bremer’s soul as recorded in his diary - provide the same popular entertainment as the private lives of their victims or near-victims.
Narcissistic patients, according to Kernberg, “often admire some hero or outstanding individual” and experience themselves as part of that outstanding person.” They see the admired individual as “merely an extension of themselves.” If the person rejects them, “they experience immediate hatred and fear, and react by devaluing the former idol.” Just as heroism differs in subtle ways from celebrity, so hero worship, which esteems the hero’s actions and hopes to emulate them or at least to prove worthy of his example, must be distinguished from narcissistic idealization. The narcissist admires and identifies himself with “winners” out of his fear of being labeled a loser. He seeks to warm himself in their reflected glow; but his feelings contain a strong admixture of envy, and his admiration often turns to hatred if the object of his attachment does something to remind him of his own insignificance. The narcissistic lacks the confidence in his own abilities that would encourage him to model himself on another person’s exalted example. Thus the narcissistic fascination with celebrity, so rampant in our society, coincides historically with what Jules Henry calls “the erosion of the capacity for emulation, loss of the ability to model one’s self consciously after another person” One of the high school students interviewed by Henry said flatly, “I think a person shouldn’t mold himself after someone else.”
When the superego consists not so much of conscious ego ideals but of unconscious, archaic fantasies about parents of superhuman size, emulation becomes almost entirely unconscious and expresses not the search for models but the emptiness of self-images. The protagonist of Heller’s Something Happened, who completely lacks “naive optimism” and a sense of self, experiences an “almost enslaving instinct to be like just about everyone I find myself with. It happens not only in matters of speech, but with physical actions as well…. It operates unconsciously, … with a determination of its own, in spite of my vigilance and aversion, and usually I do not realize I have slipped into someone else’s personality until I am already there.”
The narcissist cannot identify with someone else without seeing the other as an extension of himself, without obliterating the other’s identity. Incapable of identification, in the first instance with parents and other authority figures, he is therefore incapable of hero worship or of the suspension of disbelief that makes it possible to enter imaginatively into the lives of others while acknowledging their independent existence. A narcissistic society worships celebrity rather than fame and substitutes spectacle for the older forms of theater, which encourages identification and emulation precisely because they carefully preserved a certain distance between the audience and the actors, the hero worshipper and the hero.
VII. The Socialization of Reproduction and the Collapse of Authority

The Cult of Authenticity
Since critique of permissiveness seldom challenged psychiatric orthodoxy, it soon hardened into a new dogma of its own - the dogma of authenticity. Earlier experts had advised the parent to follow one or another set of prescriptions; now the experts told him to trust his own feelings. Whatever he did was right as long as he did it spontaneously. “Children are not easily fooled about true feelings,” warned Dr. Bruch. “Parent effectiveness training,” warned Dr. Bruch. “Parent effectiveness training,” the latest vogue in child-rearing, has popularized the cult of authenticity that began to emerge in the fifties. Like other forms of psychic self-help, parent effectiveness training teaches the need to “get in touch with your feelings” and to base everyday intercourse on the communication of these feelings to others. If parents can understand their own needs and wishes and convey them to their children, encouraging children to reciprocate in the same fashion, they can eliminate many sources of friction and conflict. Objective statements should be excluded from discourse with the child, according to this reasoning , in the first place because no one can argue rationally about beliefs and in the second place because statements about reality convey ethical judgements and therefore arouse strong emotions. “When a child says, ‘I never have good luck,’ no argument or explanation will change this belief.” “When a child tells of an event, it is sometimes helpful to respond, not to the event itself, but to the feelings around it.” Since “all feelings are legitimate,” their expression should be greeted neither with praise nor with blame. If a child does something to annoy the parent, the parent should express his annoyance instead of condemning the child or the action. If the child expresses emotions that seem incommensurate with the occasion, the parent, instead of pointing out this discrepancy - instead of making an objective statement about reality and the emotions appropriate to it - should indicate to the child that he understands the child’s feelings and acknowledges his right to express them. “It is more important for a child to know what he feels than why he feels it.” The child needs to learn “that his own anger is not catastrophic, that is can be discharged without destroying anyone.”
The cult of authenticity reflects the collapse of parental guidance and provides it with a moral justification. It confirms, and clothes in the jargon of emotional liberation, the parent’s helplessness to instruct the child in the ways of the world or to transmit ethical precepts. By glorifying this impotence as a higher form of awareness, it legitimizes the proletarianization of parenthood - the appropriation of childrearing techniques by the “helping professions.” As John R. Seeley noted in 1959, the transfer of parental knowledge to other agencies parallels the expropriation of the worker’s technical knowledge by modern management - “the taking over from the worker of the sad necessity of providing himself with the means of production.” By “helpfully” relieving the worker from “such onerous responsibilities” as the provision of his own and his children’s needs, society has freed him, as Seeley wrote, “to become a soldier in the army of production and a cipher in the process of decision.”
The revolt against behavioral and progressive dogmas, which exaggerated the parent’s power to deform the child, has encouraged society to hold the parent “only marginally accountable,” as Mark Gerzon has recently observed, “for his child’s growth…. Obstetricians take charge at birth, pediatricians are responsible for a child’s ailments and cures; the teacher for his intelligence;…. the supermarket and good industry for his food; television for his myths.” Ironically, the devaluation of parenthood coincides with a belated movement to return to the family functions it has surrendered to the apparatus of organized therapy and tuition. Rising rates of crime, juvenile delinquency, suicide, and mental breakdown have finally convinced many experts, even many welfare workers, that welfare agencies furnish a poor substitute for the family. Dissatisfaction with the results of socialized welfare and the growing expense of maintaining it now prompt efforts to shift health and welfare functions back to the home.

2024.06.01 05:01 dragonsrevenge Anyone else think some of Universal's park IPs lack timeliness?

I think as I was writing the title I was thinking, "well, not really," but let's see where this goes.
So you have IPs like Harry Potter, and Jurassic Park which will carry on for generations, same with Mario, DK, etc. transformers has been in the public conscious for decades, even if the bay versions have run their course, the IP will continue to exist.
The issues I'm thinking of are those that are already dated or exist squarely in the present
The cases for toon lagoon and Dr Seuss have been made over and over again.
Then there's the DreamWorks and illumination stuff. They just sunk money into these properties, that may be box office hits now, but but they get forgotten until the next entry hits theaters and then that's it. They don't continue to exist in the public conscious after that, there's barely any content that continues to come out, the references become dated within a year. Shrek and the minions are the exception.
I don't know if I'm making sense. I don't know if they have anything else that can be considered Dated-proof that they can work with?
Thoughts?

History: Fiction or Science? Astronomical methods as applied to chronology. Ptolemy's Almagest. Tycho Brahe.Copernicus. The Egyptian Zodiacs.
The intriguing intersection of ancient history, astronomy, and engineering has long captivated scholars and enthusiasts alike. One of the focal points of this discussion is Ptolemy's "Almagest," an astronomical treatise from the second century A.D. that cataloged 1,028 observable stars with remarkable precision. The work's accuracy, along with other historical artifacts and structures like the Egyptian zodiacs and pyramids, raises questions about the technological capabilities and chronological dating of ancient civilizations.
Ptolemy's Almagest: Precision and Plausibility
Ptolemy's "Almagest" is renowned for its precise measurements of star positions, with an accuracy within 10 to 15 arc minutes. Considering the Earth's rotation causes the night sky to shift by one arc degree every four minutes, this level of precision suggests a sophisticated understanding of timekeeping. However, the available instruments in the second century A.D.—sundials, clepsydras (water clocks), and sand hourglasses—lacked the accuracy to measure time to the minute. This discrepancy has led some to question whether Ptolemy had access to more advanced tools or if the data was compiled much later than traditionally believed.
Revisiting Egyptian Chronology
Dr. Anatoly Fomenko and his team propose a radical re-dating of ancient Egyptian artifacts, including horoscopes from tombs in the Valley of the Kings and the temples of Dendera and Esna. By decoding these horoscopes, Fomenko asserts that the dates correspond to the medieval period, around the 11th century A.D., rather than the traditionally accepted ancient timeline. This re-dating challenges the established chronology of ancient Egypt, suggesting that what we consider "ancient" may be significantly more recent.
Pyramids: Concrete Evidence?
The construction of the Egyptian pyramids, particularly the Great Pyramid of Cheops, has been a subject of fascination and speculation. Herodotus, the ancient Greek historian, described a method involving the use of short wooden beams to raise stones, which has been interpreted by some as a description of wooden formwork for casting concrete blocks. This interpretation posits that the ancient Egyptians might have used a form of concrete rather than quarried stone.
The Egyptian Zodiacs
Check: The Egyptian Zodiacs History: Fiction or Science?
Several observations support this hypothesis:
  1. Layering Patterns: The blocks exhibit layering that contrasts with natural limestone, suggesting they were cast rather than carved.
  2. Mesh Patterns: Some blocks have a distinct mesh pattern on their surfaces, possibly from mats used inside the formwork, indicating they were poured in place.
  3. Block Softness: The blocks' relative softness and erosion patterns are consistent with concrete rather than solid stone.
  4. Precision Fitting: The extremely tight fitting of blocks, with minimal gaps, would be more feasible if the blocks were cast in place, allowing them to form perfectly against each other.
Furthermore, the subsidiary pyramid south of Menkaure's pyramid shows a cavity with a hard outer crust and a softer internal composition, typical of concrete construction.
Implications and Challenges
If the hypothesis of concrete pyramid construction and the medieval dating of Egyptian artifacts hold true, it would necessitate a significant revision of our understanding of ancient history. The precision of Ptolemy's astronomical measurements might indicate either anachronistic technology or a later compilation of data. Similarly, re-dating Egyptian artifacts to the medieval period would challenge the conventional timeline and the technological capabilities attributed to these civilizations.
However, these theories are contentious and require robust evidence to gain acceptance. The mainstream academic community remains skeptical, favoring traditional explanations based on extensive archaeological and historical research. The challenge remains to prove these alternative theories consistently and in sufficient detail to overturn long-held beliefs.
