Over 100 years ago, Alexander Graham Bell asked the readers of National Geographic to do something bold and fresh—”to found a new science.” He pointed out that sciences based on the measurements of sound and light already existed. But there was no science of odor. Bell asked his readers to “measure a smell.” Today, smartphones in most people’s pockets provide impressive built-in capabilities based on the sciences of sound and light: voice assistants, facial recognition and photo enhancement. The science of odor does not offer

Artificial intelligence is the big thing right now, with industries from finance to health care to retail scrambling to adopt AI or risk being left behind. But speaking as professors of business, we think some companies might be jumping the gun. Our recent research suggests that service providers shouldn’t automatically jump on the AI bandwagon. Instead, they should make a choice informed by their strategy. In short, when it comes to AI and service firms, more isn’t necessarily better. Why service providers face a different calculation Are you a manufacturer?

Learning Spatio-temporal grounding in untrimmed videos: In training, we learn from unlabeled videos without human annotation. In evaluation, we perform spatio-temporal grounding using an action description such as “crack egg” as a query. The model needs to localize both the action’s temporal boundary and spatial region in the long untrimmed video. We visualize the heat-map from the annotation points as well as derived bounding boxes. Humans have long been searching for a “magic elixir” to make us smarter, and improve our focus and memory. This includes traditional Chinese medicine used thousands of years ago to improve cognitive function. Now we have nootropics, also known as smart drugs, brain boosters or cognitive enhancers. You can buy these gummies, chewing gum, pills and skin patches online, or from supermarkets, pharmacies or petrol stations. You don’t need a prescription or to consult a health professional. But do nootropics actually boost your brain? Here’s what the science says. What

Welcome aboard the roller coaster of parenthood, where emotions run wild, tantrums reign supreme and love flows deep. As children reach toddlerhood and beyond, parents adapt to manage their child’s big emotions and meltdowns. Parenting terminology has adapted too, with more parents describing their child as “dysregulated.” But what does this actually mean? More than an emotion Emotional dysregulation refers to challenges a child faces in recognizing and expressing emotions, and managing emotional reactions in social settings. This may involve either suppressing emotions or displaying exaggerated and intense emotional responses

The terms “shyness” and “social anxiety” are often used interchangeably because they both involve feeling uncomfortable in social situations. However, feeling shy, or having a shy personality, is not the same as experiencing social anxiety (short for “social anxiety disorder”). Here are some of the similarities and differences, and what the distinction means. How are they similar? It can be normal to feel nervous or even stressed in new social situations or when interacting with new people. And everyone differs in how comfortable they feel when interacting

You may have seen advertisements claiming to eliminate the need for eyeglasses through vision therapy or vision training—basically, eye exercises. These exercises include putting pressure on or palming the eye; eye movement exercises; or straining to read by using the wrong prescription glasses to “train” the eyes. Residential segregation is an example of the long history of structural racism in the United States. Black Americans are more likely to live in low-quality neighborhoods, which contributes to disparities in health outcomes. A Stanford Medicine study of thousands of breast cancers has found that the gene sequences we inherit at conception are powerful predictors of the breast cancer type we might develop decades later and how deadly it might be. The study challenges the dogma that most cancers arise as the result of random mutations that accumulate during our lifetimes. Instead, it points to the active involvement of gene sequences we inherit from our parents—what’s known as your germline genome—in determining whether cells bearing potential cancer-causing mutations are recognized and eliminated by

Night owls, brace yourselves. A new study by Stanford Medicine researchers has found that following your natural inclination to stay awake until the early morning hours is a bad choice for your mental health. In a survey of nearly 75,000 adults, researchers compared the participants’ preferred sleep timing, known as chronotype, with their actual sleep behavior. They determined that regardless of one’s preferred bedtime, everyone benefits from turning in early. Morning larks and night owls alike tended to have higher rates of mental and behavioral disorders if they stayed up

For a large percentage of men with prostate cancer, the tumor may be so slow-growing that doctors advise a “watch-and-wait” approach instead of active treatment. Now, a study of almost 2,200 patients followed for up to a decade finds that for most, that decision may be a wise one. “In this study, 10 years after diagnosis, 49% of men remained free of progression or treatment, less than 2% developed metastatic disease and less than 1% died of their disease,” reported a team led by Lisa Newcomb, a cancer prevention researcher

When we’re told “This coffee is hot” upon being served a familiar caffeinated beverage at our local diner or cafe, the message is clear. But what about when we’re told “This coffee is not hot”? Does that mean we think it’s cold? Or room temperature? Or just warm? A team of scientists has now identified how our brains work to process phrases that include negation (i.e., “not”), revealing that it mitigates rather than inverts meaning—in other words, in our minds, negation merely reduces the temperature of our coffee and does

Results show that greater adherence to PAP therapy was associated with higher levels of relationship satisfaction and lower levels of relationship conflict. Higher sleep efficiency among patients also was associated with higher levels of relationship satisfaction as reported by both the patient and their partner. “Recognizing that sleep and sleep disorders have an impact on

Amid an ongoing outbreak of bird flu in dairy cows, there’s been a third case of H5N1 avian flu confirmed in a dairy worker, U.S. health officials reported Thursday. The previous two human cases—the first in Texas, the second in Michigan, where this latest case also occurred—involved only a brief discomfort of the eyes, linked to conjunctivitis (“pink eye”). However, this third case is the first to present with more typical respiratory symptoms, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted in a health update. “The patient reported upper

Graphical abstract. Credit: Cardiovascular Research (2024). DOI: 10.1093/cvcvae070 A new study from the UC Davis School of Medicine found striking differences at the cellular level between male and female mice with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). The findings could determine how HFpEF is treated in women compared to men. With HFpEF, the heart muscle contracts normally but the heart is unable to fully relax and refill properly between beats. This condition is known as diastolic dysfunction. It can occur if the heart is too stiff or if the

Though 1 in 2 people will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime, there’s still much we don’t know about this disease. But thanks to continued research efforts, we keep learning more about the biology of cancer. One of these recent discoveries could even transform our understanding of how cancers develop. But before we talk about the new discovery, let’s first discuss the classical theory that attempts to explain why normal cells become cancer cells. This theory posits that DNA mutations are the primary cause of cancers. It’s well

Neurologist Professor Dr Kurt-Wolfram Sühs has discovered a new form of severe cerebellitis caused by autoantibodies. Cerebellar ataxia is a neurological disorder of the cerebellum. This important area at the back of the brain acts as a conductor, so to speak, coordinating our movements and keeping us in balance. This ability is impaired in cerebellar ataxia. Affected people can have difficulties walking, speaking and grasping or even with controlled eye movements. In some cases, the damage begins gradually and develops over a period of years.

Have you ever lost all sense of space and time when redecorating a room? How about being so focused while playing an instrument that the worries that weighed you down a minute ago just evaporated? Then you’ve probably experienced “flow.” Flow is a term used in psychology to describe a state of heightened concentration, in which you are completely absorbed in an activity. It exists somewhere between boredom and stress—usually experienced during activities which are somewhat challenging but still meet our skill levels. When we experience flow, we tend to

Immunotherapy, treatments that reinvigorate immune cells’ anti-cancer activity or reprogram T cells to target cancer, has shown promise in treating leukemias but has not yet been realized in solid tumors. One reason for the stymied success is the conversion of potential cancer-killing T cells into an inactive “exhausted” state near the tumor. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital scientists found that how tight a parental T cell grabs a cancer

Some dreams may, in fact, predict the future: New research has found that during sleep, some neurons not only replay the recent past but also anticipate future experience. The discovery is one in a series of insights afforded by a study on sleep and learning published in Nature by a team of researchers from Rice University and the University of Michigan. The research offers an unprecedented view of how individual neurons in the hippocampus of rats

2024.05.30 18:59 Juzabro Forge of Darkness Chapter 11 Summary
Part Three: The proofs of your ambition
Chapter 11
Location: Azathanai Settlement
POV: Arathan
Arathan's party is in a place with ruined houses. Some burnt. The houses are arrayed in a haphazard way. Some were even still occupied. Arathan is disturbed by this place. It is not welcoming. Draconus leads them to a house more apart than the rest of them with strange swirly patterns on the wood. Draconus turns to Arathan and says, "You might think, that your thoughts are your own." Draconus tells them that the place is only reflecting their thoughts. They didn't notice the flowers or other beautiful stuff in the town. Arathan asks if the Jheleck still raid. Draconus responds that there is nothing of value. A tall nearly naked man stands in the doorway. Arathan dismounts and struggles not to shiver or gasp. Everything was so perfect that the air wouldn't go in his lungs. Draconus tells Arathan to come near him if he wants to stay. Once next to his father, he is able to breathe again. Arathan asks who's this guy and how can he stay here. Draconus says Azathanai, but also says that name is misleading.
Arathan asks if they are gods. Draconus says, If so, "they are gods in waiting." Arathan asks what they wait for and Draconus says worshippers. He knows Tiste education says that gods must be worshipped into existence, but that's not the case. He makes an analogy to horses and how they view people as gods, but people are cruel gods. Arathan asks then what god would break us. Draconus says not this one. Most Azathanai do not want to be worshipped, surrender can taste bitter to them. The man steps forward and a globe of light follows above him. Draconus says his aspect is cold and airless. If Arathan steps away a bunch of horrible shit will happen to him. Draconus says the Azathanai hasn't picked a name, which is annoying. The man was only a little older than Arathan and ring like tattoos adorned his skin. The unnamed Azathanai asks Draconus how long it has been, and then tries to give a time reference, but Draconus stops him and tells him they won't speak of time.
Draconus asks if he will be the one to give him the gift. The Azathanai says no. Your gift is in another village. Draconus is irritated and calls him Old Man. Old Man thinks the gift is perhaps dangerous and says the use of night was unprecedented. He says some believers are furious. Draconus asks if they will challenge him. Old Man says no, they will weep and seek redress, "In the healing they seek, they reach deeply into the Vitr. We do not know what will come of this." Draconus says they are fools and asks who reaches into the Vitr. Old Man says he's heard Ardata's name mentioned and the Sister of Dreams. As he is heading back to his house he tells Draconus there is more news. The High King has built a ship. At this Arathan feels a pressure pushing him away from his father. He starts to gag. His father grabs him and says sorry. He says, "I’m never good, with displeasing news."
POV: Rint
Rint and Feren are watering their horses. In the middle of the pool is a rough statue. Rint guesses that it's supposed to be a Thel Akai. Feren says of course, so much pain. Feren wonders why they put it in a pool without a pedestal or anything. She is also just being mean to Rint. Maybe he deserves it. Rint says this village reeks of magic and he doesn't like it. Raskan agrees. Feren says someone approaches. The Azathanai that approaches is a once fat woman with loose skin. She tells them that they do not know her and that the Dog-Runners do. They worship her and see her in the fires they light. She would prefer a shapely body, but her worshippers keep feeding her. She puts her hands into her stomach opening previous wounds. She pulls out a small bulbous clay figure covered in blood and ichor. She tosses it at the feet of Feren who steps back. Feren then picks it up. The Azathanai asks Raskan if she frightens him and if he wants to feel her weight and the wetness of her gift. Raskan is trembling. She says she can make him kneel to her. She tells him to get on the ground.
Draconus shouts Enough!. She says she was only amusing herself. No harm. He tells her, "Begone, Olar Ethil. Skulk your way back to the Dog-Runners. These people are under my protection." She responds contemptuously, "They need it. Tiste" Feren drops the figure and reaches for her sword, but Rint stays her hand. Raskan runs away his hands covering his face. Olar Ethil says she can take them all and Draconus can't stop her. He says things have changed and invites her to quest deeper. She says, "Oh, no need, Draconus. Night rides your breath. I see where you have gone and what you have done and you are a fool. All for love, was it? Or am I being too … romantic." She makes a gesture and the figurine explodes cutting Feren's face. Feren calls her a fat hag. Olar tells her, "Touched by the goddess! You carry a child, woman, yes? A girl … and oh, the hue of her blood is most unusual!" She asks Draconus if he wanted a grandchild, says it must be disappointing. She tells Draconus to come no closer and if he stares at flames too long she will steal his soul. "Shall I utter your truths, O Suzerain of Night?" Draconus says if she comes to their campfires at night they will battle to the death. Olar tells him not to speak of death as an Azathanai has now committed murder. He is shocked. She tells him it wasn't a Tiste so he doesn't have to avow vengeance. "Nor a Dog-Runner, or so I have since discovered, which absolves me of the same. Nor a Thel Akai – although that would have been interesting. Neither Jheck nor Jheleck." It was Karish a Jaghut. Draconus is suddenly anguished. Rint pulls Feren back and looks at Arathan. He sees him watching Feren. As she turns to see Arathan watching her she whispers, I'm sorry. Draconus invites Olar Ethil to his fire. She says the Dog-Runners drive her mad with their prayers. She lays her head on his chest.
Rint wonders who Draconus is. Draconus asks where Hood is. Olar tells him chained in the Tower of Hate, so he doesn't start a war with the Azathanai. Feren drops to the ground starts weeping. Rint feels sick and wishes Ville and Galak would come back, so they could all leave. He would break the contract. Draconus tells Rint to make camp and tells Arathan to help Raskan.
POV: Arathan
Arathan finds Raskan against a wall. He tries to stand, but can't. He's distraught. Raskan tells Arathan to go away. Arathan tells him that he can't. He says he doesn't know what Olar did to him, but he knows it was cruel and that he should be allowed to be alone. Raskan tells him again to stay away or he might harm him. Arathan says, "Sergeant, my father has met my eyes. I am his son. I am not here to ask you. I am here to command you." Raskan says this was supposed to be Ivis's task and he would have been better. Arathan asks what she took from him. He says he begins to see and that Draconus and Olar know each other from long ago. Arathan asks again what did he see. Raskan says, "Azathanai blood is what I see. It needs chaining and that’s what he’s done. Chained it down. By his will alone you are held back, made normal to our eyes. You fool – not once did she look at you!' Arathan doesn't understand. Raskan stumbles away and he follows. Arathan wonders if his mind is broken. He also wonders why Draconus waited until now to pronounce Arathan as his true son. Raskan is attacking the hillside as he moves toward the camp. Arathan reminds him of all of his deeds and duties. He regains himself and apologizes saying he misspoke. Raskan resumes his walk to the camp only now calmer.
Arathan tries to follow but then thinks about Feren and the girl they made. He is terrified. He forces himself to walk. They made a child, but Feren needed nothing else from Arathan. In giving one thing to her, he gave everything of himself. "What is given away for free comes back wounded. Value is not always shared and some hands are rougher than others." He thinks this is the message that Old Man was giving to Draconus, but Draconus wasn't listening.
POV: Feren
Rint has sewn up Feren's cheek wound. She is angry that Olar laughed when it happened. Olar had confirmed that she was pregnant, but now her baby felt alien and she was worried she couldn't love it. She thought the hole in her would be filled by this, but it isn't. Olar said the boy was something more and that worries Feren. She forgets her troubles as she sees Raskan walk up. Olar had stolen much more from him. Rint tells Raskan that every witch's touch is awful, but it wears off. Raskan says that she's Azathanai. Rint says even the Jheleck know Olar Ethil, "They call her power Telas." He says they've all stared into a fire and been entranced. Raskan asks if Olar has touched Rint. He says yes, but he did not know it at the time. Arathan arrives and Feren notices that he is not looking at her. This is good, as to look at him pains her.
Rint hands Raskan a flask. Raskan remembers an old saying, "Drown the witch". Rint and Feren give there blessing for him to get drunk. Raskan looks at Arathan and asks, "Lord Arathan?" Arathan gives his blessing too. Feren thinks, "Lord Arathan.’ It is done, then. He met his son’s eyes and knew them as his own. ‘Of course he’d know them,’ she muttered under her breath. They just needed a few hundred wounds first."
POV: Olar Ethil
Draconus says to Olar. What I shall deliver to Kharkanas-. She interrupts him and says it will heal nothing. She says Mother Dark has unmanned him. Draconus says that is the woman he loves and he will not yield another step. Olar says, "It is not you I doubt, Draconus. You gave her Darkness. You gave her something so precious she knows not what to do with it." She says Mother Dark may choose what's expedient over him. She says there are Jaghut among the Dog-Runners. "Those who rejected the Lord of Hate. They amuse themselves ordering and reordering what does not belong to them. They make fists and call them gods. Spirits of water, air and earth flee before them. Burn dreams of war. Vengeance." Draconus asks if all that they made will crumble. Olar answers that she will respond with fire and that they are her children after all. He says that she is no different than the Jaghut.
Olar asks about their terrible children. He says they are terrible. She asks if he will visit Arathan's mother. He says no. He tells her they won't make love tonight. He tells her of his plan to get to the next village, then send everyone back except Arathan. They will continue to the Lord of Hate. She assumes that Arathan knows nothing. Draconus confirms. Olar says, "For all that I am fed by my Dog-Runners, I do not understand them; and for all that I nurtured Burn, at my own breast, still I underestimated her. I fear it is that fated disregard that will see the end of me some day.’" He asks if she will see death coming. She says she'd rather it was instantaneous. She asks him the same and he says he will die many deaths. She looks at the sculpture of the Thel Akai titled surrender that Caladan Brood made knowing it's honest and hating him for his talent. Olar says she sees Arathan's mother in his eyes and that it must be hard for Draconus. He says yes. She pulls another figurine out of her belly and gives it to Draconus to give to Arathan. He says Arathan is not hers to protect. She says even so. As he's walking away she asks what name he gave his son, he tells her and she starts laughing.
POV: Arathan
Arathan has a horrible dream with dead babies floating in a pool that he has to step on and then falls through. Raskan thought Olar Ethil was his mother, but he knew she wasn't. He knew she was Malice's mom as they looked alike when Malice was younger. Draconus gives Arathan Olar's figurine. He tells him that he will send back Raskan and the borderswords and they will go on. Arathan tells his father not to hurt Feren. Draconus tells him not to be foolish and that he will leave them alone. Arathan goes back to sleep and the dream returns. Only now there is a woman at the bottom of the pool pulling babies out of her belly and cutting the cords letting the babies drown. Women came to the edge of the pool and stuffed the dead babies in their bellies. One woman remains at the shore, but there are no babies left. In her sorrow she turns to go and does not see one baby boy break the surface and struggle. He also sees his father cutting ropes.
POV: Raskan
Raskan wakes up hung over. He notices some horses are gone. He asks Rint where they went. He thinks he shamed Draconus. Feren tells him the lord commanded them to go back. Raskan catches himself staring at Feren. He sees a swell to her, but knows that's impossible this early. Raskan thinks Draconus will now discard him, but remembers Arathan fondly thinking that he will never see him again. Rint says they should get going and Feren says she will meet them at the pool. She says she'll say hi to the witch and loosens her sword in the scabbard. Rint hurries to saddle his horse and tells Raskan to hurry. Raskan says he will catch up.
POV: Feren
Feren intends to try to kill Olar Ethil, though she doesn't know if it's possible. She was tired of feeling used by Azathanai. If she harnessed her rage she knew it would burn away all the bad shit she'd done and allow her to make violence. She makes her way to the pool with the Thel Akai statue and finds Ville and Galak, "And the smiles they gave her shattered the fury within her, and she rode out from it as if from under a cloud"
POV: Rint
The night past listening to Feren cry and Arathan whimper he thought about killing Draconus. He thought a knife in the neck would do it, but every time he opened his eyes, Draconus was standing awake. He began to believe in the power of Night. Mother Dark was no longer a Tiste. Even the title goddess seemed less than what she was now. He didn't understand how a person could transform in this way. He now suspected that Draconus shared some of that power. The Azathanai met Draconus eye to eye as equals. The Tiste who would force Draconus out were right, but they were fools to think him a mere Tiste. The Suzerain of Night is brutal and profoundly dangerous. Agents of Urusander's legion had come to the borderswords telling them that Mother Dark needed a husband, but the borderswords were tired of war and rejected them. The next time they asked, he would offer his support to their cause.
POV: Raskan
Raskan hears a voice behind him say, "I am not always cruel." He turns and sees Olar Ethil. He moans and backs away. He tells her to go away, but she gets closer. She says his fire is unhealthy and to let her douse it. Let her heal him. He says please and she misinterprets it as an invitation. He falls to his knees and she takes his head in her hands. She says she can end his torment. Her hands begin to meld into his skull. She tells him to open his eyes and he sees only her belly. She says, "Whence you came, Raskan." He tries to pull her hands away, but finds only wrists. Her hands are embedded in his skull. She presses his face against her belly and her scar opens. He tries to breathe, but fluids fill his lungs. She puts his head in her belly and the wound closes around his neck and decapitates him. In his last moments he feels real satiation and joy.
POV: Olar Ethil
Olar wipes her hands and climbs into a tree. She uses sorcery to make the lichen enwreathe her. She hides in waiting to see Raskan's companions find him. She wants to see Feren and the wound she gave her again. "Not always cruel, it was true. Just most of the time"
POV: Rint
Ville and Galak tell Rint about their journey back. They don't mind getting here and turning right around. They don't like this place. They said Sagander went willingly to the monks, but Galak does not trust him. Something's not right in his eyes. Feren sees Raskan's horse and asks if he went back to sleep. Rint sees Raskan curled up, but knows somethings wrong. Rint moves to dismount, but freezes. The horses are agitated. Feren dismounts and studies Raskan's body then looks at the tree and draws her sword. Rint dismounts draws his knife, but doesn't see what Feren sees. Feren tells him she's in the tree. Feren yells, "Azathanai! Witch, come down and meet my sword! You so liked my blood – give me some of yours!" She strikes the tree with her sword, but it rebounds out of her grip. Rint moves to grab his sister. Feren calls Olar a murderer and curses her for the murder and the blood she took from her. Rint tells Ville and Galak to wrap up Raskan's body and throw it on the horse. They need to leave. Feren is scratching and clawing at Rint to try to get free. He sees that they are doomed. Their future is blood and murder. He lets go and Feren gets free. She grabs her sword and sheaths it. A clay figurine lands at Rint's feet and Olar Ethil laughs. Rint tells Feren to lead them down the hill and that he won't be long. She goes. Rint looks through his saddlebags. He takes out some oil and puts some kindling at the base of the tree. He says fire probably won't hurt her, but maybe it will if the intent is there. "I do this wanting to hurt you, Olar Ethil. And I want that to matter." The tree bursts into flames. Olar Ethil begins screaming and he rides away.
POV: Feren
Feren hears Olar scream and it makes her smile. As they ride through the village, the Azathanai come out of their houses and look at the burning trees (the fire spread). They then look at the borderswords. Feren offers each one a smile.
Location: On the road to the next Azathanai Settlement
POV: Arathan
They had been riding since early morning. Shortly after noon, Draconus reins in and looks back the way they came. Arathan says, "father?" Draconus says that Raskan is dead and that Olar thought it as mercy. Draconus asks if that makes a difference. Draconus says he feels the bordersword's rage and admires them. He says they struck back and that Olar will be terribly scarred. He says Feren is remarkable and that Arathan is right to love her. Arathan says he doesn't and that he no longer believes in it. Draconus looks at him and Arathan continues, "But, she will be a good mother". Arathan leaves that world behind.

2024.05.29 18:13 WayTooManyCookies [HELP] Cat didn't return to his normal routine after getting vaccine 3.5 days ago.
Background: My single mother and I have a cat named Benjamin. We adopted him from the SPCA when he was 4 months old. He was abused and someone left him in the playground. SPCA rescued him and he received his first round of vaccines and dewormer. Now, he is 1.5 years old and has not had any additional shots since then. After discussing with my mother, we decided not to pursue further vaccinations for several reasons:
- He is TERRIFIED of going outside. We've tried harnesses and pet carriers, but whenever we take him outside, he yelps nonstop and is visibly shaken.
- He is a strict indoor cat (we live in a high-rise condo with no backyard), so he shouldn't be exposed to FIV or rabies.
- Financial concerns.
Despite his vaccinations not being current, Benjamin has been very healthy over the past 1.5 years. He is loving, energetic, and mischievous. We attempted to take him outside a few more times, but each attempt failed. We accepted that he loves his home and let him be.
Recently, we had the idea of fostering kittens since it's kitten season. One of my primary concerns was Benjamin's immunization. Despite my mother's disagreement, I took Benjamin to the nearest Vetco at Petco for his second round of core shots. He was very unhappy and struggled to get into the carrier, and I got scratched. I still believe this was a logical decision, as I would hate myself if Benjamin caught something serious from the foster kittens. However, I started to regret my decision...
After bringing him home, he went straight to the closet and hid for 12 hours. I argued with my mom but convinced her that this was for the best. I hand-fed him his favorite boiled chicken breast, and he ate about 2 ounces before going back to sleep. For the next 36 hours, he continued to eat some wet and dry food but was very lethargic and low energy. I searched online and found that this behavior is normal for cats in the first 48 hours after vaccinations.
Now, it's been more than 3 days. Although he no longer hides in the closet, he is still very low in energy. The good news is that he is not vomiting, has no diarrhea, and is still eating (though at 50-75% of his normal appetite). I think we should take him to a vet, but my mom believes he is just traumatized and feels betrayed, and told me to not bring him outside and further traumatize him. I'm unsure if there is something medically wrong with him or if he is just upset with me. He did climb onto my lap as I typed this, but he has not been following his usual routine.
- In the morning, he would jump to my bed, wake me up and cuddle with me; He doesnt do that anymore.
- When I shake the treat bag, he would rush to me from nowhere and meow at me; He doesnt do that anymore.
- When I'm cooking he would circle and headbutt me; He doesnt do that anymore.
- When I walk around the house he would follow me, even to the bathroom; He doesnt do that anymore.
- We have a giant cat tree in the house that he likes to climb and flop on; He doesnt do that anymore.
Should I worry or would he be back to normal if I continue to give him some spaces?

2024.05.26 04:17 HeavyRadio Hell Grows in Oregon
No one grows up dreaming of becoming a Mycologist. However, ever since I saw the first Planet Earth movie in college, I have had a deep love and curiosity for fungi. Whether it be for cooking, recreational uses, or just studying the way that Fungi operate, these organisms are deeply complex and rather overlooked for more glamorous taxon's such as mammals or reptiles. However, these organisms are deeply compelling. One such example is the world’s largest organism, which is a 3.4 mile long fungi that resides in the Malheur National Forest in Oregon. When I got word that the area that this fungi inhabits had opened up due to a sinkhole, I boarded the first flight to Boise to meet up with several of my colleagues to study this creature up close.
Prof. Gene Wilson met me at my flight’s gate holding up a sign with my name on it and wearing a blue and pink Hawaiian shirt. Gene and I had met back at a college party during my freshman year at Boston University when he had punched a man who got a little too “handsy” with me. Ever since that day, he has been like a brother to me. As soon as he saw me, he quickly walked up to me and gave me a hug.
“Kim, it has been far too long!” He exclaimed as he let go of me.
“It has!” I said as I patted him on the shoulder “We both chose the wrong professions for keeping close contact”.
“Definitely” Gene said with a hearty laugh, “you ready to see some fun guys!”
I rolled my eyes at his horrible dad joke as he picked up my luggage and we both made our way to his car.
“So what do you know about the site, will it be safe to walk around or will the park rangers give us trouble for being there?” I asked.
“Quite the contrary!” Gene said as he struggled with holding my duffle bag. “We’ve gotten full authorization to go into the sinkhole”.
As soon as I heard this I stopped walking and stared at Gene with a confused and clearly excited expression.
“Don’t fuck with me like that Gene, surely you can’t be serious”. I said as I tugged on his arm.
Gene patted my hand and gave me a big smile, “I’m as serious as a heart attack Kim, got express approval from the CDC to study Mr.Humungous himself”.
“Oh my god Gene” I said as I gave him another hug, “this is gonna be the best day of my life!”.
“It’s gonna be a day, that's for sure!” Gene said as he unlocked his GMC Yukon, “Dr. Alisha Johnson will be meeting us there as well”.
As we got into his car, Gene turned to look at me. “Kim, National Geographic is going to publish a story about us!”.
“Gene, you better stop giving me good news or I might ugly cry all over your leather seat” I said as I wiped my eyes.
Gene laughed as the ignition came to life and we began our 4 hour road trip to Oregon.
“So, what has Kim been up to for the last couple years?” Gene asked endearingly.
“Well, I recently accepted a job offer from Boston University” I replied as I looked out the window.
“That’s incredible! Though truthfully I never saw you as the teaching type” Gene replied.
“Ouch, that’s cold Gene” I said sarcastically.
“Oh stop it, you know I don’t mean that in a bad way," Gene said as he quickly looked over at me. “You’ve just always been about working in the field, not in a classroom”.
“Fair enough” I said as I unfolded my arms, ”I guess I just decided that it's time for me to settle down. Plus having six months of paid sabbatical is always good. How have you been doing?”
“I’ve been really good!” Gene said as a wide smile started to form. “Eric and I actually decided to begin the adoption process!”
“Oh my god you’re gonna be a dad!” I yelled enthusiastically, “Gene, you and Eric are going to be wonderful parents!”
“Thank you Kim, that means a lot”, Gene said as he let out a heavy sigh. “It’s been so stressful lately having to meet with lawyers and child proofing our home. That’s why this trip means so much to me!”
For the rest of the trip, Gene and I continued to talk about our plans for the future, our work and reliving our college days. Finally around 11 a.m we saw the sign for Malheur National Forest. As we got closer to the research site, a wave of anxiety and excitement washed over the car. Neither of us spoke but we both knew what the other was thinking, we were about to make history.
When we pulled up to the site, we saw that there were two cars parked to the side and a young man leaning against a nearby tree.
“Wow, look at the fanfare” Gene said sarcastically.
“They really rolled out the red carpet this time,” I replied as we both let out a laugh and stepped out of the vehicle.
As we grabbed our research kits from the truck, the young man began to walk towards us.
“Hi, are you Dr.Wilson and Dr.Bishop?” the young man asked.
“That’s us!” Gene said, “are you our mighty escort?”
“Sure am!” the young man said as he grabbed one of the bags on the ground, “I’m Connor Peters, I work under Dr.Johnson”.
“It's a pleasure to meet you Connor” I said as I shook his hand, “lets see the site!”
After walking for what seemed like a lifetime, we finally made it to a roped off section of open land. Standing about twenty feet in was Dr. Ashley Johnson and a middle aged man with a camera around his neck.
“Dr. Johnson, we’re all here!” Connor yelled as we stepped over the rope.
“Wonderful!” Dr. Johnson said as she and the man made their way towards us, “Dr. Bishop and Dr. Wilson, It's great to see you both again”.
“The pleasure is all mine” I said as I shook her hand.
“Everyone, this is Dan” Dr. Johnson said as she turned to look at Daniel “He’s a reporter from National Geographic”.
“It’s a great honor to be able to venture into this unknown with all of you!” Dan said as he snapped a picture of Dr. Wilson and I.
“So how far away is this sinkhole?” I asked.
“The sinkhole is right over this small hill, but that's not where we will be doing our research” Dr. Johnson said as she led the group towards the hill.
“But isn't that why we planned this excursion?” Gene asked.
“It is, but I am more concerned with studying the cave system that the sink hole managed to unearth,” Dr. Johnson said as she began to smile.
“A cave system? I asked.
“Yes, a cave system which will allow us to get extraordinarily close to the armillaria ostoyae fungi”. Dr. Johnson said as we neared the top of the hill.
“How close?” I asked excitedly.
“Practically inside the organism” Connor blurted out.
“Dr. Johnson, are you serious?” Gene chimed in.
“Take a look for yourself”, Dr. Johnson said as she pointed down the hill.
From the top of the hill you could see the massive hole where the ground had given way and begun to expose the vast web of black armillaria roots along the holes sides. As we got closer to the opening, it was apparent that the hole went down about a hundred feet and had a twenty foot radius.
“Jesus Christ, this is fucking massive” I said in pure disbelief.
“Dan had sent his drone down the hole earlier and the entrance to the cave is about a hundred and twenty get down, so I hope you’re all good at climbing”. Dr. Johnson said cheerfully as she began to hand out harnesses.
“I haven’t climbed anything since middle school but I guess you’re never too old to pick up a new hobby” Gene said as he struggled to put on his harness.
“Let’s hope then that whoever taught you did a good job” Dan said as he attached the rope to his harness. “I’ll go down first”.
We all watched intently as Dan slowly made the climb down to the bottom of the hole. Once at the bottom, he attached the bottom of the rope to a spike and waved the rest of us down. One by one Dr. Johnson, Connor, and Gene hooked in their harnesses, grabbed their gear and began the descent. Once Gene had successfully unhooked himself it was finally my turn.
“Just take it slow and steady” Dan called up to me as I began to descend the rope.
As I went down, I noticed that the roots on the walls began to get more prominent until the entire wall had been enveloped in a pulsating black mass. After several minutes of slowly belaying myself down, my feet touched solid ground again. Once I had unclipped from the rope I turned around to see that the group was staring at something.
“Is that the cave?” I said as I walked over to Gene.
Gene just nodded in disbelief.
Once I reached where they were I stopped dead in my tracks. In front of us was a ten foot opening covered in the veiny roots of the fungus. Each root quivered as if to create an optical illusion of waves in the open ocean. Along the floor of the cavern entrance were ancient drawings of symbols that I have never seen before. As we tried to take in the sight of this lost cavern, our fixation was broken by the flashing of Dan’s camera. As the flash illuminated the cave, we watched in awe as the pathway ahead seemed to stretch on indefinitely.
“Are these ancient ruins?” Connor said as he began to walk towards the cave.
“You’re guess is as good as mine” Dr. Johnson said as she turned on her flashlight.
“Wait, before we go in we should put on respirators”. Gene said as he started looking through his bag and I quickly joined him.
“Why do you need a respirator?” Connor asked as he watched the rest of our group put theirs on.
“You never know what sort of mold or spores are going to be down here” Dr. Johnson explained, “you brought a mask with you, right?”
“Sorry Doc, I think I forgot to pack one”. Connor said sheepishly.
Dr. Johnson let out a sigh of deep disapproval. “How can you be going for a doctorate but can’t follow simple instructions in an email?”
Connor shrugged and began to walk into the cave. With this, the expedition had begun.
The further we went into the cavern, the higher the density of roots became, turning what had once been a spacious open area into a narrow passage that forced our group to walk in a single file line. It felt as though we were walking through the nervous system of a body rather than a naturally occurring cave. After a half of squeezing through the narrow path of tendrils we finally came to a larger opening where we could take a break. As I entered the area, I saw Dr.Johnson giving Connor a water bottle as he was in the middle of a coughing fit.
“Should’ve worn a respirator” Dan said as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a box of American Spirit cigarettes.
“Says the guy whose about to smoke in a fucking cave” Gene said, “Are you trying to give us all lung cancer?”
“Seriously Dan”, Dr. Johnson said as she walked towards us. “I expected a National Geographic reporter to have a little more class than having an American Spirit in a cave”.
“Look, I don't tell you how to live your life, so please don’t tell me how to live mine” Dan said as he leaned against one of the thicker roots.
As he took off his respirator and put the cigarette in his mouth, Dan pulled out a box of “strike anywhere” matches from his breast pocket and took one from the pack.
“Do you guys think the root will mind?” Dan said sarcastically as he pulled out a match.
“Wait Dan! The roots are sensitive to heat, they’re like a nerve receptor” I exclaimed as Dan struck the match onto the root.
As he did this, the root quickly recoiled and slithered up the wall as if it had felt the heat of the fire. Surprised by the quick reaction speed of the root, Dan dropped the lit match onto a different root, which also recoiled at a tremendous speed. We watched in awe as the whole cavern began to shift and coil rapidly like a hungry pit of snakes that found a sliver of meat. This brief awe quickly turned to terror when we heard a loud rumbling from above us.
“What the fuck was that” Dan said as he quickly grabbed his grab.
“I don’t know, but we should probably keep moving,” Connor said.
“Oh Fuck!” Gene yelled.
I quickly turned around and saw that the roof of the cave was beginning to crack.
“The cave’s gonna go!” I yelled.
Before we could even escape, the roof of the cavern exploded causing the ground we were walking onto given way. We had walked only several hundred feet into the cave and were already being swallowed by it. I watched in horror as Gene, Dr. Johnson and Connor plunged into the darkness below. Grabbing onto a root, I looked over at a petrified Dan.
“Hold on Dan!” I yelled as my hands were being sliced by my skin slipping on the coarse roots.
“I’m trying Doc!” Dan said as he tightened his grip around the root.
“What the fuck?! It grabbed me!” Dan yelled.
I turned to look at Dan but before I could respond, my grip finally gave and I started to fall into the abyss below. I fell for a second before I was knocked unconscious by the drop. When I came too, I saw from the dim sunlight above that the area of the cave where we had taken our break was now 20 feet above me. Looking around, I couldn’t see anything more than 10 in front of me and I had no source of light that I could use.
In a panic I started calling out to the void.
“Guys! Are you ok? Where are you?”
Suddenly I heard a weak voice to my right.
“Doctor Bishop…” Connor croaked out in between coughs.
“Connor, where are you, are you ok?” I asked frantically.
“I’m over here” Connor muttered, “just follow my voice”.
Not wanting to test my balance, I crawled on my hands and knees towards where I had heard Connor. Several feet in front of me, I accidentally grabbed what felt like a metallic cylinder. Feeling around the object further, I found the button and the room exploded with light. My brief excitement over being able to see was quickly crushed by the sight in front of me. Laying bloody and crumbled on the ground was Connor. Looking at his right leg, it looked as though it had taken the shape of the letter Z. Connor stared at me with a solemn look, as though he knew from my reaction that his situation wasn’t good.
“Guess I’m not the prettiest sight right now huh”, Connor chuckled before having another coughing fit.
“Take it easy Connor, you’re going to be fine” I said as I kneeled down beside him. “We just have to get out of here”.
“How are we going to do that?” Connor said, “there’s no way I can climb that wall like this. Even if I could, I’ve been having these terrible coughing fits ever since I got here”.
“Once I find where Dr. Wilson, Dr. Johnson, and Dan went, we will think of a plan. We have spare ropes in our bags, remember”. I said as I slowly stood up.
“Good luck Dr.Bishop” Connor said as he gave me a small smile, “please be safe”.
As I was standing, it became clear to me that I had suffered a concussion from the fall. Holding my head to help my searing headache, I slowly made my way down the corridor. As I did, I began to see more of the symbols from before. Pointing my flashlight at the opposite wall, I saw that there was an illustration of a group of people praying to what appeared to be a black scribble. As I stared at the drawing, I saw something slither by the peripheral of my vision and I quickly shined my flashlight on the floor. Slinking away into the darkness was another black root. Using the wall as a crutch, I slowly followed the root further into the tunnel. Along the walls were even more pictures depicting the black scribble. One picture showed a white glow from the scribble as the people rejoiced over a good harvest. Another picture showed people gathered around the black scribble performing acts of ritualistic sacrifice. The last drawing I saw was the people running from the black scribble. Before I could look at any more drawing, I felt my left foot get stuck on a root before collapsing to the floor.
As I went to stand up, I suddenly heard a sound further down the corridor.
“Guys… Guys… Where are you…are you ok…”
“Hello, is anyone down there?” I replied as I inched towards the voice.
“Are you ok… Guys… Guys…”
“Dan? Gene? Alisha? Is that you” I called out to the darkness.
“Dan…”
After slowly making my way towards the voice for a couple minutes, I could finally see what looked like a shadow at the edge of my flashlights range.
“I see you, who’s there?” I called out again with a shaky voice.
“Dan…”
As I got closer, I could see Dan standing still in the middle of the corridor about 200 feet in front of me. As I moved closer, he started to wave at me.
“Thank god you’re ok Dan, I was worried…” I quickly stopped in my tracks.
Dan was still waving at me. Now that I was about 50 feet closer, I could tell that the way he was waving was almost as if his body was stuttering. He wasn’t looking at me either, instead he was staring down at the floor. Before I could get any closer, I felt hands grab me by my mouth from behind and pull me into a small alcove. I tried to kick and scream but whoever was dragging me was much stronger than I was. Once we had backed into the darkness the person spoke.
“That isn’t Dan” Gene whispered in a scared tone.
As soon as I heard Gene’s voice my body eased up and I turned to face him.
“That’s definitely Dan” I reassured Gene, “He was standing right there”.
“I know Kim” Gene whispered, “He’s been standing there waving for 2 hours now”.
I felt my whole body go numb when he said that. How could he have known that Dan had been waving at me.
“What the fuck is this place?” I muttered.
“I have no clue but we need to get the fuck out of here” Gene said as he put on his backpack.
“Where’s Alisha?” I asked in a hushed tone.
“We split off earlier, I think she was heading towards where we had fallen to try and find Connor” Gene replied.
“Connor is down this corridor, but he’s in really rough shape” I said as I looked around for where my flashlight had fallen.
“Fuck, how bad is he hurt?” Gene asked.
“Bad, he won't be able to walk on his own” I replied as I found my flashlight.
As I went to grab it, I hit the button shining the light across the corridor. As soon as it turned on Gene quickly reached over and turned it off.
“Fuck, fuck, fuck”, he muttered as he backed to the edge of the alcove. “Quick Kim, get over here”.
“Why?” I asked as I slowly scooted towards Gene.
Before Gene could answer, I heard the sound of scraping coming from down the hall.
“Gene… Alisha… Dan… Where are you guys…”
The scrapping began to grow louder.
“Kim, as soon as that thing gets here, you need to be absolutely silent”, Gene said in a serious hushed tone.
“What are we going to do?” I whispered as I curled up next to Gene.
“I don’t know” Gene said, “we have to wait for it to get distracted so we can get the fuck out of here”.
“Where are you guys… Guys… Guys… are you ok…”
The voice grew louder.
“Doc… Where are you…”
As the voice came closer, I realized that whenever the voice spoke it lacked a form of cadence. There was no rhythm, tone or inflection. Whatever was speaking to us did not comprehend the basics of human communication.
“Where are you… Are you ok…”
Suddenly I could make out the silhouette of a figure standing right in front of the alcove. Looking at its legs, I could see that it was hoisted several inches off the ground by roots protruding from the back of its legs. Its arms and head dangled like a limp stuffed animal. The figure rose about a foot off the ground and began to lean forward at a 45 degree angle. Suddenly, it lurched towards the wall of the alcove where Gene and I were hiding. As it crept towards us, I heard the sound of a soft thud a couple feet in front. The sound of the thud caused the creature to stop dead in its tracks.
I remembered that Dan had kept his matchbook in his breast pocket. If this silhouette was Dan and that is what made the noise, then using the match could be our only chance of escape. As the figure stood only a couple feet in front of us, I slowly crept towards where I had heard the sound. I was just out of reach of the object when my knee landed on a small pebble, causing me to let out a soft gasp. At that moment, the whole world went silent as I noticed that the body of the figure was now at a much steeper angle. I couldn’t see it, but from the angle of the body I could tell that it was dangling directly above me. Holding back tears, I held my breath as I reached down and grabbed what he fell off of the figure. As soon as I picked up the object, I knew from the texture and shape that it was the matchbook. Taking one more deep breath, I laid on my stomach and held the match in front of me. I only had one chance to do this, so I couldn’t afford to fuck it up. I took a breathe and counted down in my head to calm any nerves
“3”
I put the head of the match to the stone floor.
“2”
I gripped the match so that it wouldn’t fall out of my bloody hands
“1”
I said a quick prayer in my head as I struck the match.
As soon as the match head scraped the stone floor, the head burst into flames. Without thinking, I quickly tossed the match onto the root holding up the body. With incredible speed, the body jolted out of the alcove and slithered quickly into the darkness from which it came. As soon as it was out of sight, Gene helped me up and we bolted back towards where I had left Connor. As we got closer to the light of the open cavity above, we started to hear talking. Gene put out his arm to stop me and we hid in darkness along the wall.
“What should we do?” Gene said.
“I’m sure that it's just Connor, we shouldn’t jump to conclusions”. I said I began to walk toward, but as I did Gene grabbed my arm.
“Kim, that fucking thing mimics voices and uses bodies as puppets. I don’t think that being careful and not rushing into a potential trap is jumping to conclusions”. Gene replied in an annoyed tone.
“You’re right, what should we do then?” I asked
“Lets walk up slowly and stay out of sight until we are absolutely sure who or what is over there”.Gene said, “follow my lead”.
As I got behind Gene I saw him grab at his waistband for an object. He quickly pulled out an orange revolver and held it in front of him.
“What the fuck is that? A toy gun?” I asked sarcastically.
“Bitch this is a flare gun, I got more class than that” Gene retorted.
We both let out a light chuckle as we inched closer.
“Hey who was that?” Connor said nervously. “We don’t want any trouble, ok. Just leave us the fuck alone.
“Seriously Connor” Alisha snapped.
Gene stopped and looked at me.
“Yup that’s for sure them” Gene said as he hid the flare gun.
“Don’t worry, it's just Kim and I, '' Gene said as we both stepped into the circle of light.
“Oh thank god!” Alisha said as she hugged Gene, “We need to get out of here right now”.
“Tell me about it! What do you have with you” Alisha said as she pointed to Gene's backpack.
As he pulled his items out of his bag, our hopeful outlook was quickly diminished.
“We have 1 bottle of Ibuprofen, a Fine Garden magazine, a hand flare, a notebook and pen, and a bottle of red wine” Alisha said in a defeated tone. ‘How the fuck is any of this useful”.
“Well for starters that wine is aged so show it some respect, but more importantly I wasn’t planning on being attacked by a fucking fungi!” Gene snapped.
As Gene and Alisha began arguing, I took some of the ibuprofen and sat next to Connor.
As I got closer to him, I noticed just how bad Connor’s situation had gotten in the last hour. His skin had taken on a yellowish hue, his mouth had a white outline of crust around it and his eyes had become blood red.
“I look like shit, don’t I?” Connor said in a joking tone.
“You definitely looked a bit better this morning,” I replied as I sat next to him.
“A bit better” Connor said with a laugh, “Ouch Doctor Bishop”.
“Please, call me Kim” I said I felt Connor’s forehead, which had become hot to the touch.
“Kim, I don’t want to die like this,” Connor said as he leaned back on some rocks. “I have so much I have to do, and even more that I have to make up for”.
“You’re going to be ok” I said as I gently ran my hand through his hair.
“Then look me in the eyes when you say it” Conor said sternly. “Please Kim, if I am going to die, at least give me the respect to tell me”.
I sighed and looked back at Alisha and Gene, who had stopped arguing to listen to our conversations. As I looked back at Gene for answers, Alisha walked over and met Connor’s stare.
“Connor, we will do everything we can to save you. But yes, you are most likely going to die” Alisha said bluntly.
“Fuck… If I do die, can you please tell my parents that I died for something meaningful” Connor asked as tears began to drip out of his eyes.
“Of course I will,” Alisha said with a shaken voice.
“Thank you… Ah fuck its happening” Connor yelled as his body started to convulse.
Alisha quickly grabbed him and put his head in her lap.
“Quick do we have anything I can put in his mouth to stop him from biting off his tongue”.
“Yes, take my button up” Gene said as he ripped off his Hawaiian shirt.
As soon as Alisha grabbed the button up and looked back down at Connor, She was met with black projectile vomit. Alisha stumbled back while trying desperately to get the vomit off of her mask. As soon as the vomit was cleaned she ran back over to Connor, only to be stopped by Gene. As soon as Alisha saw what Gene was holding her back from, she froze and her skin went pale. I looked where Gene and Alisha were staring and to my horror Connor was now standing upright and covered in dark black bile. As he stood, his body continued to convulse violently. After about ten seconds, the top of his head began to expand into a cone shape.
“Oh my god”, I said as I took a step back.
“What the fuck is happening!” Alisha screamed as she began to sob.
Suddenly, Connors head burst open and his scalp folded over his eyes, revealing four black tendril roots that were moving erratically within his skull, spewing blood all over the surrounding rocks.
“Jesus fucking Chirst! Someone do something” Alisha cried out.
Two massive roots then started to protrude from his torso, creating a gaping hole where Connor’s rib cage had once been. Hundreds of small roots then shot out of his legs, mangling them beyond recognition. His body then dropped to the floor, and the roots in his skull and torso began to carry his body into the darkness of the tunnel.
We all just stood in silent shock. Not only had Connor died in front of us, but whatever he became was beyond anything a human should have to bear witness too. What’s worse is that what happened to Connor could happen to us if we are down here any longer than we already have been. However, the scariest thought is whether it is already too late for us, and that it is only a matter of time before we share a similar fate. Finally after what seemed like hours, Gene finally broke the silence.
“We need to find a way out of here”.
“What should we do then? We could try to climb up from here” I said as I stared up at the newly formed pile of loose rocks.
“It’s too risky, if we put too much tension on the wall we might cause another collapse. Gene said.
“At this point, I’d take being crushed by a cave in then whatever the fuck just happened to Connor” I replied.
“What if we go deeper into the corridor?” Alisha said quietly.
Gene and I stopped arguing and looked over at Alisha.
“And what would that accomplish?” Gene replied sternly as he folded his arms.
“We could either find another exit or find It” Alsiha replied as she grabbed her flashlight off the ground.
“Find what?” I said as I stepped towards Alisha.
“The heart” Alisha responded.
Gene took a deep breath and then turned to me.
“If you want to go, I say let's do it”.
“I think it's our best shot at this point”, I said as I looked at Alisha, “lead the way”.
As she gave me a cheery nod, I noticed something about her respirator mask. It had been cracked from the fall.
As we ventured back into the corridor, I stopped the group to show them the wall drawings.
“So this thing used to be worshiped,” Gene said as he studied the wall art.
“Maybe they’re the ones who built these hallways?” I replied.
“I doubt it,” Alisha said as she studied the drawing of the people fleeing.
“What makes you say that?” Gene asked.
“In that first drawing where the people are praying, it looks like they had also found this place and were praying to this being for a good harvest”. Alisha said as she begun to walk further down the hallway.
“I wonder how old this place is then”, I said as Gene and I attempted to catch up to Alisha.
“Who knows, it could be as old as the Earth itself” Alisha replied as she kept walking.
“Hey why are you walking so fast? Can you slow down a bit” I asked as Alisha began to go out of sight.
Suddenly Alisha stopped walking and just stood still.
“You guys need to see this!” Alisha happily exclaimed.
Gene shot me a look before we both caught up to her.
“What are you looking at, all I see is just more hallway” Gene said as he looked back at me nervously.
“You don't see the brilliant lights?” Alisha asked sadly.
“Nope, just hallway” I said. “Are you feeling alright?”
Alisha turned to look at me with wide eyes and a droopy smile
“Kim, I have never felt better. We are so close, I can feel it” Alisha said as she began to speed walk again.
As she made her way down the hallway, Gene and I slowed down to gain some distance between us before we started to follow.
“What the hell is wrong with her” Gene said, “She’s acting totally different”.
“Her mask got cracked during her fall” I said solemnly.
“Oh fuck, do you think she has what Connor had?” Gene asked nervously.
“I have no clue”, I said as we began to pick up the pace. “But seeing as she's been exposed to the same air for roughly the same amount of time, I’d say something else is happening here”.
“Guys, quickly come look! I found it. “Alisha called from deep within the corridor.
After a couple minutes, we finally caught up to her and stood in awe. We could see a beam of light coming from an opening a couple hundred feet away.
“Alisha you found an exit! Thank fucking god!” Gene said as he hugged her.
We both sprinted towards the light as Alisha followed behind us laughing to herself.
As soon as we got to the doorway, Gene gave me a hug.
“We’re gonna be saved!”
After he let go and waited for Alisha to catch up to us, the three of us walked through the doorway and into the light.
Once the light faded and we were on the other side, we froze in terror. This wasn’t the exit, it wasn’t anyplace that should even exist. The room seemingly stretched for miles in either direction. Blue and white lights glowed beyond the distance that the human eye can see. In the middle of this glowing chamber was a pulsating mass of black roots, eyes and veins which looked as though it was the size of a large mountain.Tendrils made of rotting muscle, eyes, and roots, which connected the mass to the chamber seemed to stretch indefinitely, were hundreds of feet thick, and was gushing out black liquid. After being frozen in place, the mass began to shake and the massive eye in the center of its form began to open. As it did, tendrils carrying thousands of corpses similar to Dans’ hovered about us and spoke in unison. As the corpses spoke, Gene and I looked on in horror as Alisha bowed before the Mass.
“Alisha Johnson… You have brought forth your harvest…” The corpses sang in unison
“I hath brought forth the harvest which you seek” Alisha replied.
“You must spread my divine word… Connor has given you the seed for which you must plant…” The corpses bellowed in perfect harmony
‘Fuck this bullshit!” Gene said as he raised his flare gun towards the Mass.
Before Gene could pull the trigger, Alisha had gotten up and smashed him over the head with a rock.
“Gene no!!!” I screamed as I rushed to his side.
“Go Forth… Alisha… Join the Harvest… Join the Harvest…” The corpses screeched.
“Why the fuck would you do that Gene?!” I said as I held his head.
“I wanted to go out in style”, Gene said he coughed up blood.
“What do you mean, we could’ve just escaped”. I cried.
“Kim, we both know that we can’t leave this place. Not after what we’ve seen or what may be carried in our bodies. If Alisha escapes, she’s going spread the spores like Connor did and kill a lot of people… You have to stop her” Gene said as his voice became weaker.
“How? She’s so far ahead already” I said as I clutched Gene’s head.
Gene turned his head towards the flare gun that rested a couple feet away.
“With style” Gene said as he smiled.
“Now go, leave me here” Gene said as he closed his eyes.
“I’ll see you soon Gene” I said as I picked up the flare gun.
“I’ll be waiting,” he replied.
I looked back at Gene and the Mass one more time before I ran out of the chamber and after Alisha.
As I ran towards the opening, I could hear the deafening sounds of thousands of people singing “Join the Harvest” all around me. As I turned a corner to head down the final hallway to the opening, I was met with a sucker punch to the face which shattered my mask and sent me to the floor. When I came too, I saw Alisha sprinting towards the loose rock wall. Behind me, I could hear the sounds of thousands of feet scraping against the floor. I quickly got my bearing and made it to the wall just as Alisha climbed to the top. As I began to climb the rock wall, Alisha started to throw rocks down on me.
“You can’t stop me Kim” Alisha yelled as she threw a rock at my head. “I am It and It is me, the Growth and I demand sustenance. Join the Harvest or become the flesh which we shall devour”.
“You pretentious bitch stop speaking to me in riddles” I yelled back.
Alisha quickly ran towards the entrance to the cave. As I could hear the sounds of her laughter and footsteps above, I slowly made my way up the rock wall. As I got to the halfway point, I accidently grabbed hold of a loose rock causing me to loose my balance.
“Fuck that was close” I muttered as I regained my composure and continued my ascent.
Finally after several grueling minute I made it to the top of the wall and started racing back towards the entrance. As I passed through the narrow wall of roots, they began to scratch and claw at me, as if to try and slow me down. However I bore the pain, as I was not going to let Gene, Dan and Connor die in vain. Once I emerged from the cave, I noticed that I was bleeding profusely from all of the cuts. With all my remaining strength and adrenaline, I made my way over to the rope and saw that Alisha was about thirty feet above the ground.
“This ones for you Gene” I said as I raised the flare gun and pulled the trigger.
I watched as the flare soared over Alisha’s head by thirty feet.
“You missed!” Alisha yelled as the flare went past her.
“Nope”, I said as I smiled. “I was right on target”.
I watched as the flare exploded as it hit the rope, causing the polypropylene material to begin to melt. As Alisha was about ten feet from the point of impact the rope gave out, sending her to the ground. As she hit the tough stone below, I made my way back into the cave and found my bag. As I dumped out its contents onto the floor, I picked up an extra bottle of wine that Gene and I were going to share, took off my broken respirator, and began to type out this story. As I finish writing this, I can feel the influence of the spores overtaking my mind. It is too late for me, but If you are reading this, you must join the harvest join the harvest join the harvest join the harvest join the harvest join the harvest join the harvest join the harvest join the harvest join the harvest destroy the nest for good.

Colon cancer is increasingly hitting Americans under the age of 50, and a new study outlines the warning signs that these young patients first encounter. The analysis was based on data from 80 different studies, involving almost 25 million patients under the age of 50. In nearly half (45%) of cases, blood in stools was an initial symptom, followed by abdominal cramps (40% of cases) and alterations in bowel habits (27% of

The rate at which Americans under the age of 65 suffered a stroke rose by about 15% between 2011 and 2022, new government data shows. That was true even among the young: The rate of stroke jumped 14.6% among people ages 18 to 44 during the study period, researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found. It’s not clear why stroke rates have risen so sharply, but rising rates of obesity and high blood

The 2023 wildfire season was worst on record. High temperatures and widespread drought fueled over 6,600 fires, burning a record-breaking 18.4 million hectares, an area more than double the size of New Brunswick. The fires emitted nearly 480 million tons of carbon, five times the emissions of an average season, turning the skies hazy and orange and blanketing much of North America in wildfire smoke for weeks. Many regions of Canada experienced over 40 days where air pollution concentrations exceeded the World Health Organization’s air quality guidelines, leading to

The Singapore Airlines turbulence incident that has sadly left one person dead and others hospitalized has made many of us think about the risks of air travel. We’ll hear more in coming days about how the aircraft came to drop so suddenly on its route from London to Singapore earlier this week, injuring passengers and crew, before making an emergency landing in Thailand. But thankfully, these types of incidents are rare, and much less-common than injuries from other types of transport. So why do we sometimes think the risk of

2024.05.21 22:43 Zealousideal-Tie-940 Buy cheap turkeys. Freeze them. Cook them.
I have a habit of buying turkeys when they go on sale during the holidays. You can get them for as cheap as 19 cents a pound and that can't be beat. I have a chest freezer I load up and when I have the time I'll thaw and roast or smoke up a bird.
This week fate did its thing. I need to get the freezer pared down to clear the basement for some work, so I pulled a turkey. And the wire harness on the oven fried. So I have a turkey thawing and no oven, no time to smoke a bird.
I asked a while back on here if anyone parted out turkeys and got some great responses. Fuck if I'm wasting a 15 pound turkey.
So I went ahead and broke the bird apart into a bone in breast, leg quarters, wings, and a back. The breast I cracked the sternum with a cleaver to flatten and put a Chipotle rub on. all The dark and bony parts I put on a bed of mirepoix and herbs, salt and pepper in the crock pot.
Today I cooked the dark and bonies for 7 hours on low in the slow cooker. I pulled the meat. I have never seen or tasted such succulent dark meat turkey. That's going in the stash. It also yielded about 4 cups of drippings and the bones, which will become stock. It was super easy to pick.
The breast is on the charcoal grill with indirect heat and a chunk of oak right now. I'm going to pull it off at 150. I'll let you know how that part goes. It smells incredible.
Buy turkeys. Eat them!

"Nikola Tesla Shows How Men of the Future May Become as Gods."“When a child is born, its sense organs are brought in contact with the outer world. The waves of sound, heat and light beat against its feeble body, its sensitive nerve fibers quiver, the muscles contract and relax in obedience—a gasp, a breath, and in this act a wonderful little engine, of inconceivable delicacy and complexity of structure, is hitched to the wheelwork of the universe. Left to itself the engine stops; it has no power to draw energy form Nature’s inexhaustible store.”The little engine moves and works, changes size and shape, performs more and more varied operations, becomes sensitive to more and more different influences, and now there begins to manifest itself in it a mysterious force. It becomes capable of responding to stimuli of a more subtile nature and of drawing, for its own use, energy from the environment. Gradually the engine has been transformed into a being possessed of intelligence, which perceives, discerns, does like others of its kind.“The experiences multiply, the knowledge increases, the discernment becomes keener, the human being, responding to the faintest influences, is awakened to the consciousness of Nature and its grandeur, and in its breast there is kindled a desire to imitate Nature, to create, to work itself the wonders it perceives.”But the exercise of this power does not satisfy the mind, which rises to still higher, undefinable perceptions, not of this world, and inspired by them the artist, the inventor and the man of science give expression to the longing of the soul.“What can man, with his power of creating, in his striving toward the ideal, produce; what result can he attain which would be of the greatest consequence in this universe, his greatest achievement? A scientific idea which I advanced nearly two years ago in an unpublished address may serve to answer this question, form a point of view likely to be taken by an inventor or engineer.”According to the adopted theory, first clearly formulated by Lord Kelvin, all matter is composed of a primary substance of inconceivable tenuity, vaguely designated by the word “ether.” The atom of an elementary body is differentiated from the rest of this substance, which fills all space, merely by movement, as a small whirl of water would be in a calm lake.“All matter, then, is merely whirling ether. By being set in movement, ether becomes matter perceptible to our senses; the movement arrested, the primary substance reverts to its normal state and becomes imperceptible. If this theory of the constitution of matter is not merely a beautiful conception, which in its essence is contained in the old philosophy of the Vedas, but a physical truth, then if the ether whirl or atom be shattered by impact or slowed down and arrested by cold, any material, whatever it be, would vanish into seeming nothingness, and, conversely, if the ether be set in movement by some force, matter would again form. Thus, by the help of a refrigerating machine or other means for arresting ether movement and an electrical or other force of great intensity for forming ether whirls, it appears possible for man to annihilate or to create at his will all we are able to perceive by our tactile sense.”This conclusion, though startling, is not contradictory to the adopted doctrine of the indestructibility of matter, and in the light of modern views it may be considered as a scientific possibility. It does not require the exercise of great powers of imagination to conceive that by harnessing the sun’s energy and making his machines self-acting these processes of creation and annihilation might be made to go on without human intervention other than the control.“Could he do this, man would then have god-like power, for he could create any kind of material substance, of any size and shape, seemingly out of nothing, and he could make all perceptible substance revert to its primary from, lose itself forever in the universe.”At his command, almost without an effort on his part, worlds would be born. This, according to my ideas, would be the grandest feat which might be performed by man, the most consequential, his greatest achievement.“

2024.05.19 17:12 carrot120569 When to stop latching
We will be 2wPP tomorrow and are probably 90-95% pumping with the remainder being poor latching. My LO was born at 36 weeks and has always been quite sleepy at the breast. She frequently gets frustrated quickly and has a clear bottle preference forming. This is all compounded by me having “short and flat nipples” per the lactation consultant; we’ve had to use a nipple shield to latch successfully. Maybe 1-2 times a day, she’ll have a decent latch for 5-10 minutes; the rest of the attempts are flops. And then on top of all of this, baby has to wear an orthopedic harness for a few months, which makes some BFing positions difficult and makes it where we can’t do true skin to skin :(
My question is - when is it reasonable to stop trying to latch? Is there hope that it will get better more than 2 weeks out? I don’t even want to try latching her most of the time because it makes me so sad and embarrassed when she doesn’t latch well, and I’ve started skipping latch attempts to 1) save my nipples and 2) save my mental health. I’ll be returning to work at 10wPP and will need to majority pump anyways. Any moms in similar situations who can lend advice or share when/how you decided to EP? I so desperately want to be able to latch her but something is telling me that EP may be our best fit.
ETA: thankfully I have no supply issues and even have an oversupply at this time.

2024.05.18 22:06 lolswainbot World Beast: Ti4mat
O “World Beasts… are innately different to humans and other forms of 'life'. Those created in the Goddess’s image are bound only by fate and time, able to lead their own destiny if they will it so. For us, it’s different. We are born with a function in mind — a purpose. Sometimes it’s clear, sometimes it’s not.
I still have no clue why Har-Meggidos was created.”
- Reginn Magina, World Beast, when asked about World Beasts
With a crash, the oceanic tentacles crushed the ground with ease, destabilizing the heroes. However, this attack was simply countered by the warrior, who simply diced the surrounding hundred paces with a single swing of her blades. The massive chunks of octopus-like flesh fell to the earth with a thud, and the World Beast screamed in agony.
Sacrosanct was still unsure whether to engage or not — whether this was his battle to fight. Such indecisiveness faltered his flames, but noticing that Blodelshein was about to be crushed by one of the chunks, he quickly pushed her out of the way with a dive but got squashed into a bloody pulp himself.
“Sacrosanct!”
While the white-haired girl continued the battle, Sacrosanct soon lifted the mass, covered in his own blood. The hero spat out a dozen teeth from his mouth, though they soon healed back thanks to his flames. Now he was truly fired up.
However, he was not quite ready yet. It would take a few more steps to enter the ‘LIMITLESS’ state.
The dual-wielding warrior ran up Tiamat’s right arm while massively damaging it along the way. The light katana moved like a needle, while the longsword swung like a hammer; the two weapons synergized in a negative tempo, creating a dissonance of destruction.
Meanwhile, Sacrosanct stretched, ran in place, push-ups, sit-ups, jumping-jacks, all in impossibly quick succession. His heart rate began to increase rapidly, and so did the fire surrounding him.
The golden-eyed swordswoman was able to stab the World Beast Directly in its forehead, and while it caused excruciating agony and great damage, it was still not yet enough as roots sprouted from the wound and knocked her all the way to the ground, where a wooden spike much larger than she awaited.
Meanwhile, Sacrosanct began to sing to himself… No, he created rhythms. Songs? Humming? It was strange how he seemed to be listening to something in his head, but it was somehow working as his flames grew multiple times in size.
The girl quickly turned to face the ground using the weight of her swords, and in the split second before contact, her blades cut the spike directly in half, landing in its new crevice. However, the broken spike was then coiled in vines, and was shut in a matter of microseconds by the pressure surrounding it, and the hero was forced to struggle to keep herself uncrushed.
Meanwhile… Sacrosanct was finally ready — with just one more step. Now he took a good look at his enemy, the colossal demonic titan, much stronger than him; of course, he could beat her. He was Sacrosanct. With this newfound confidence, the hero began to concentrate the massive flame surrounding him toward himself, compressing the heat. Soon, a massive flash of light blinded the spectators, including Tiamat, and from the blinding light emerged Sacrosanct. The hero was now surrounded by an electrical storm running throughout his body, as well as blue flames contrasting with the previous red. He was not just any other hero, he was THE hero. He was Sacrosanct.
“Alright, bring it on!”
Tiamat could not fully gauge the hero’s strength and instead chose to finish the girl off by crushing her completely with her fist. However, as she turned her attention away, the World Beast was suddenly kicked in the face, snapping her massive head instantly. He was fast.
The World Beast quickly composed herself and healed her neck. Demonic spiders began to emerge from her wings; perfect for dealing with pests. However, Sacrosanct was no mere fly, and he began to easily set the spiders ablaze with his contagious flame, which then spread to the World Beast’s hair.
“Let’s go!”
While Tiamat was distracted by the flames, Sacrosanct lept from her shoulder directly toward the spike in which the katana-wielding hero was imprisoned. The sheer impact of cannonballing into the wooden structure was enough to blow it open, and the warrior was freed.
“You still haven’t told me your name yet!”
“...?”
The two looked up to see that Tiamat had already fully recovered. There must’ve been some way to kill her, for why else was she reincarnated?
“...Acata, could you tell us how you defeated her preciously?” asked Blodelshein in her native tongue.
The girl turned to find the source of the voice, but none lay in sight.
“I’m speaking to you telepathically. I’m afraid I won’t be much of a help — the demon lord has a powerful soul. Anyways, you said you met her before right? Then you must be the 15th hero, the one who defeated this demon lord. How did you do it?”
“...It was not I who killed Tiamat,” said Acata, “I suppose you could say that the entire world killed her.”
“...So you’re saying you lured her here without a plan to kill her?!”
“The plan is to slice and dice until it is done.”
“...”
It seemed that Blodelshein was surrounded by true warriors.
Now killing her was no longer an option, the best they could do would be to immobilize her until a method was found. However, things would not be so simple as Tiamat began to attack once again, interrupting the hero mid-thought.
A slit positioned directly at the centre of Tiamat’s breast opened like a vertical eye, and from the entrance began to stream a river of energy, the current of which soon turned into a torrent, then a storm. The energy began to form a sphere in the form of fire, like the heavenly ornament in the sky. The heroes could already feel its heat from the ground. As the World Beast began to power this attack, Sacrosanct came up with a brilliant plan — a Sacrosanct original.
“Alright, hero, I’ll neutralize this blast, then you attack her directly in that weird source — that must be her core or something!”
“...Fine.”
In the heat of the battle, language barriers can be fatal. As such, instead of listening to the words themselves, Acata decided to simply react to Sacrosanct’s action. Judging from his tone, it seemed that he had prepared a plan. Though she did not understand what his course of action would be, there was no other choice as the inevitability of decimation loomed over them.
Tiamat soon released the attack, and Sacrosanct released an attack of his own as well. All the flames surrounding him concentrated on his two fingers outstretched toward his target, leaving the rest of his body vulnerable and bare. As it was compressed into an atomic volume, it instantly flipped from a bright white to a blackhole void surrounded by dark lightning.
“Go!”
As the pseudo-sun continued to approach, the grass began to wilt and burn. However, neither Sacrosanct nor Acata moved an inch. Sacrosanct’s black hole was soon consumed by the flame, but Acata knew that his act was not yet over. The dark elf began to immediately calculate in his mind the time required for the sphere to reach the centre of Tiamat’s sun, and soon activated his spell:
“⌈Nuclear Starburst⌋!”
The black hole immediately increased a thousandfold in volume, completely enveloping Tiamat’s attack. It then folded in upon itself, erasing both attacks from existence. While Tiamat was shocked, Acata took no time to hesitate. She tested Sacrosanct’s theory by leaping a thousand paces into the air and plunging both her blades into Tiamat’s chest — the source of the strange energy.
As Blodelshein watched on from behind the rubble, she sincerely hoped that this would be the end. It did seem that the damage was massive, and the World Beast began to disintegrate as it wailed in pain. However, it soon clenched its teeth, and through its bloodied eyes, cast a desperate spell.
From the slit emerged a sphere — a flesh-pink, translucent sphere. Acata could see that her sword was stuck deep into it, and she could almost see inside, a small world. Like a minature garden, a microcosm…
A massive flash of light enveloped the area, and all three heroes were blinded. Through the brightness, however, Blodelshei,n could catch glimpses of stars passing by her, turning into lines, as if travelling through space.
Within the microcosm, three shooting stars — never seen before — entered the world.

- 5-14-2024CAN EATING OR DRINKING CAFFEINE BEFORE BED IMPACT YOUR HEALTH? Having a lot of food in your stomach before bed can redirect blood flow to your gut to digest the food, meaning there is less blood flow going to your brain. You need that blood flow to your brain to make sure you go into the different sleep stages. If you have caffeine in your system or are sensitive to it, the time to fall asleep can double. Caffeine has a half-life of up to 4.5 hours, so a safe bet is to avoid caffeine after noon.

2024.05.14 15:28 healthmedicinet Health Daily News May 13 2024
DAY: MAY 13, 2024
- 5-13-2024BIKING REVEALED TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH LESS KNEE PAIN LATER IN LIFE A study reveals that people who participated in regular bicycling over their lifetime had a lower prevalence of frequent knee pain, radiographic osteoarthritis (ROA) and symptomatic radiographic osteoarthritis (SOA). Rheumatologists often encourage regular physical activity for the prevention of osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis. However, some exercises are more effective than others.
- 5-13-2024STRESSFUL LIFE EVENTS CAN INCREASE YOUR RISK OF ALZHEIMER’S Stressful life events, such as the death of a loved one or divorce, put a person at greater risk of developing dementia in later life, a recent study has found. But only if the stressful event happened in childhood or midlife. The study included 1,290 people at increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers looked at 18 stressful life events and when in people’s lives they happened.
- 5-13-2024TIPS FOR LOWERING STROKE RISK May is National Stroke Awareness Month, and as part of everyday awareness, Mayo Clinic health care professionals suggest reducing stroke risk and knowing the signs. A stroke happens every 40 seconds in the U.S., and the likelihood of stroke increases with age, according to the National Institutes of Health. Preventing a stroke is a crucial aspect of health care, as about 80% of all strokes are preventable. The focus is on managing risk factors to reduce the long-term risk of stroke.
- 5-13-2024IT’S TIME TO USE TIKTOK TO TALK TO YOUNG PEOPLE ABOUT OBESITY, SAYS RESEARCHER There is an urgent need to harness the potential of TikTok and other social media channels to provide scientific information about obesity to young people in engaging and accessible way . The popularity and broad reach of such platforms provides the opportunity to reach diverse audiences, including teenagers and young adults, explains lead researcher Dr. Antonella Franceschelli, of Unicamillus International Medical University, Rome, Italy.
- 5-13-2024WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER TAKE NUTRITION ADVICE FROM A CENTENARIAN It’s a cliche of reporting on people who reach 100 years of age, or even 110, to ask them some variation of the question: “What did you do to live this long?” Inevitably, some interesting and unexpected answer is highlighted. Fish and chips every Friday. Drinking a glass of strong liquor every day. Bacon for breakfast every morning. Wine and chocolate. While a popular news story, this is a relatively meaningless question that doesn’t help us understand why certain people have lived so long.
- 5-13-2024JUNK FOOD MARKETING ON VIDEOGAME LIVESTREAMING PLATFORMS INCREASES PURCHASES AND CONSUMPTION AMONG TEENS, STUDY FINDS Food and drink advertisements on videogame livestreaming platforms (VGLSPs) like Twitch are associated with more positive attitudes towards, and purchases and intake of, unhealthy foods that are high in fat, salt and/or sugar (HFSS) like energy drinks among adolescents aged 18 or younger. The concerning findings prompt researchers to call for stronger regulations on digital marketing of unhealthy foods to young people on these platforms, where there is currently no effective regulation
- 5-13-2024HIGHER BLOOD SUGAR LEVEL AT GESTATIONAL DIABETES DIAGNOSIS LINKED TO HARMFUL OUTCOMES FOR MOTHERS AND BABIES The higher the blood sugar level in pregnant women when first diagnosed with diabetes, the higher the risk of complications around and after birth
- 5-13-2024ASKING ADULTS WITH OBESITY ABOUT THEIR WEIGHT DURING CHILDHOOD COULD HELP DETERMINE THEIR MORTALITY RISK Being asked whether you considered yourself a normal weight, plumper or thinner as a child when attending a doctor’s appointment as an adult might appear like a very strange question to ask, but new research suggests that such questions can help identify increased mortality risk in adults living with obesity.
- 5-13-2024ENERGY DRINKS CAN LEAD TO SERIOUS HEART ISSUES IN KIDS AND TEENS, HEALTH EXPERTS SAY Hennessy Sepulveda thought she was going to die. “I began dissociating as I was driving. I was 10 minutes away from my house. My vision started warping and the lights were hitting me really bright,” she said. “I felt my chest pounding, I felt a wave of panic hit me—I knew something was wrong.” Sepulveda, a Florida International University student who was 19 at the time, was admitted to the hospital, and was surprised by the cause of her symptoms
- 5-13-2024A BLOOD TEST TO HELP DETECT LUNG CANCER? NEW TEST OFFERED AT 18 LOCATIONS Julie Harris had never been tested for lung cancer. A low-dose CT scan, the only recommended screening for adults at risk of developing lung cancer, was not something she’d ever found time to do. But when her primary care doctor recently suggested a new blood test to help look for signs of the disease, Harris was intrigued. She had her blood drawn the same day, in the same building as her doctor’s appointment.
- 5-13-2024STUDY SHOWS EXERCISING SLOWS OUR PERCEPTION OF TIME results of a new study show for the first time that individuals tend to experience time as moving slower when they are exercising compared to when they are resting or after completing their exercise.
- 5-13-2024BREAKTHROUGH THERAPIES ARE SAVING LIVES, BUT CAN WE AFFORD THEM? Harnessing the body’s own cells to fight disease, long a medical dream, is finally a reality. Now comes the bill. Last month, Stanford became the first hospital in the nation to use a new $515,000 cell therapy to treat a patient with advanced melanoma. A related approach, costing $420,000 to $475,000, is offering hope to patients with lethal blood cancers. Meanwhile, cells fixed by gene therapy can slow, even stop, the progression of intractable diseases like sickle cell or beta thalassemia—

2024.05.10 01:44 daj1798 What to Do in the Moment - Overexcited?
I have a year and a half old golden and she is a great dog - until she’s overexcited. For context, she gets 3 mile walks 5 days a week and a 5 mile walk on the weekend. We also do short sniff walks, and obedience training. She is RARELY alone more than 3-4 hours.
She’s great at the house, and walking on the street, but if we go to the park, she loses her mind. She’ll start spinning to bite the leash (attached to the back part of her harness), jumping on me hard enough to knock me over, and biting my arms. Again, it’s all playful, but it’s HARD, she’s not redirectable with toys and treats, and she’s hurting me. I’ve tried tossing pieces of chicken breast and hot dog (high value) to redirect, and different types of leads and harnesses, but none of it has helped.
The only thing I have been able to do to snap her out of it is a small smack on the nose. It makes her “reset” and she’ll stop and walk. She doesn’t exhibit any kind of distress from it, but I’m trying to educate myself and it seems like aversive training is strongly recommended against. I don’t want to hurt or scare her!
I’m working through the process of training to avoid that hyper state, but what do you do in the moment? How do you get out of that biting/playful growling/jumping overexcited state when the dog does not want food or toys?

2024.05.09 07:43 kunai1997 The Fallout Cabin
Chapter 1 “Snow Fall”
Today; Monday, February 29th 2044 The sun was just rising when Mack had grabbed his coffee mug and stepped out on the porch. He opened the door slowly and walked out onto the porch of his cabin overlooking the valley. It had been covered in a snowy white blanket, making the view beautiful to look at as the rays of the early morning sun glistened off of the snow. He sat down on the swing that he had installed last fall before the snow had started to fall. Meanwhile, Amber was still asleep from working late into the night prior. A ding sounded from his phone on the table to the left of him. He picked it up and saw the notification of a text message. He sipped from his death adder brew that was almost as strong as a shot of straight adrenaline to the heart. When Mack typed in his password, he saw that Cole had messaged him asking if he had any plans for this weekend. As he read the text he thought about old memories with him and Cole. He then began to reply to Cole’s message when Amber woke up and was coming out to the porch wearing Mack’s red plaid flannel jacket that barely hung down passed her plump and wide hips that swayed as she walked. So if you got just the right angle you could see what pair of underwear she was wearing at that moment. Once he Finished typing his response to Cole's text Amber looked down at Mack and asked “Who was that baby” as Mack then looked up a little bit startled by Amber’s voice. Afterword’s he got up from the swing and set his cup down on the table and gave Amber a hug and kiss on her lips before sliding his hands down stopping momentarily on her plump and wide hips before replying to her question by saying “ that was Cole babe, wanting to know if we had any plans this weekend” As he then picked up his cup and walked back inside with Amber and said “hey baby do you have to work tonight “ before pouring a second cup from his coffee machine that brewed his death adder brew. As Amber followed Mack back inside the house before saying she was off for the night. As he finished pouring his second cup of coffee Amber went and sat down in the living room and turned on the sat top box and tuned to the local news to check the weather forecast for the day while Mack slowly creeps up behind Amber and slowly placed a hand on her shoulders spooking her momentarily before realizing that it was just her boyfriend Mack placing his hands on her shoulders. As he then slid one his hands down inside of his red plaid flannel jacket and slid his hand down onto her perky breast’s and grabbed a good fist full of her left breast as he loved to tease her by grabbing her breast from time to time, as he knew it was one of the many things that would make Amber start to feel aroused by how she new that all of her belongs to Mack, as all of Mack belongs to Amber. They had an agreement between themselves when it came to what was an acceptable thing to do to the others body. As he then leaned down next to her ear and said “ I love you my little princess “ knowing all to well that would cause her to start to become moist between her thighs and sooner or later soak her panties that she was wearing at that very moment. As Amber felt Mack’s warm breath down the side of her neck and hearing him tell her that he loved her arousing her more as he did so from the warmth of his breath. He then withdrawn his hand from being cupped around her breast and out of the red plaid flannel jacket she was wearing so he could go and sit down next to Amber and place a hand around the back of her shoulders as he has always done. When Amber looked over to him and said “have I been a good girl for daddy? “ clearly hinting at how much she was aroused at that moment. When he told her how he loved her.
When Mack then looked into Amber’s pale blue eyes and replied in a low tone to Amber saying “you will just have to find out if you have been a good girl in daddy’s eyes” before looking up to the Television mounted to the wall of his cabin. As he waited for the weekly forecast to come up Amber got up from her spot on the couch and walked over to Mack to plop her toned Slender figure onto Mack’s lap trying to be a good girl to Mack as she wanted something from him. As Amber plopped down in Mack’s lap, He then with out any hesitation wrapped his arms around her waist. Pulling her into him more so then she was anticipating, causing her to faintly squeal from the sudden jolt of motion. A little while later Mack’s phone once again dings. He then reaches over to see what the notification was from. Meanwhile Amber was solely focused on watching what was on the news. Mack had by that point picked up his phone and began to unlock the device with his thumb print before swiping the notification bar down to see it was an email. Once he has noticed that the email was on his long since dormant email. He used when he was working as a specialist for a black company known for some very shady events, As the paychecks where never less then six figures a month for him. Once he opened the email and started to read the encrypted email using the Cypher that he had memorized. Once he was finished reading the warning to him, He then deleted the email as he is maybe in danger due to a breach in there database. The organization he once worked for believes that he is one of those being targeted now by someone from a foreign radicalized regime hell bent on revenge for what they did almost a decade ago. Once Mack was done reading the email he then kindly asked Amber to get up, So he could fake having to go take a leak in the bathroom. Upon him going towards the bathroom he instead disappeared around the corner. As he went around the corner into his hidden arsenal that Amber didn’t know anything about. Amber not knowing about his past just through he was going to the restroom, So once he was hidden from her sight he quietly opened up the false wall and stepped foot in. Before closing it just as quietly as he had opened it. Once Mack was fully inside of the room, He began to walk over to the far side of the room and looking upon the reinforced steel and concrete door. That must have weighted a few hundred pounds in materials alone, He then began to turn the dial. First he spun the dial to the left then back to the right then ending upon the final digit, Before pulling the heavy door open so he could step into the fourteen inch thick reinforced concrete and steel walls to retrieve his custom, Seven sixty two by fifty one fully automatic battle rifle and a twenty five round box magazine and slide it into the magazine well of the rifles lower. Afterwards reaching up and pulling the charging handle rearward similar to the German style rifles of the similar caliber, To the final point of travel rearward before letting the spring tension send the carrier group home. Clambering the first round off of the magazine leaving the rifle in red status. Which to the untrained meant there was a loaded magazine with one round loaded into the chamber and the safety off ready to fire at a squeeze of the trigger. A few minutes later Amber called out to Mack asking if he fell in the toilet as at this point she was starting to have to go herself. As Mack could not hear Amber through the walls. Amber started to think that Mack fell asleep on the toilet and began to walk towards the bathroom when she saw the hidden wall slightly ajar. Just thinking it was because of the age of the cabin. Amber thus didn’t give it a second thought and kept on walking to the bathroom. Meanwhile Mack was still inside of his armory and didn’t notice amber walking by the door. As Amber walked the last few steps up to the bathroom she nocked on the door to the bathroom waiting for a response. As she waited for what felt like an eternity she opened the door as she felt like her bladder would explode at that point when she noticed Mack was not inside and then quickly lifted the lid leaving the seat portion of the toilet down. So she could drain her bladder while she was scrolling her social media applications she loved to look at. Once Mack was done in the armory he then began to quietly sneak out of the armory which is when he could hear Amber in the bathroom on the toilet. Once he was out of the hidden armory he then walked over to the bathroom and knocked on the door to ask if Amber needed anything as he was heading to town in a few minutes. As Amber was on the toilet she replied to Mack and said “if you could buy me some more tampons babe I would be thankful” as she then started to reach for the toilet paper to clean herself up from having to go pee. Mack then replied “sure thing sweetie is there any specific brand you wanted or just grab a package?” Amber then replied by saying “ Can you grab me the Blue and Purple box babe? ” As Mack then started to walk to the kitchen where the keys where to his War Wagon was before heading to the garage to take the War Wagon to town. After picking the keys up off the counter Mack then started walking to the garage with his rifle in his hand gripping the fore end just in front of the mag well. Once Mack got to his War Wagon, He stared to slip the key into the ignition waking up 572 cubic inch big block he put in himself. Which could put out a reasonable 700 horses before Mack got his hands on it. Now it was somewhere in the ballpark of 1100 horses from all the work he had put into the motor and the transmission. Which he learned the hard way how much transmission would be required to even use the that motor. As the 572 woke up with a thunderous boom that your make any other newer V8 owner jealous, Mack then slid the rifle over to the passengers seat and began to put his seatbelt on as it was a 5 point harness incase he was to roll the truck. Even though the truck was fully up armored against roll overs and collisions with steel bumpers and roll bars all of which where around a quarter inch thick at the thinnest. Meanwhile Amber then walked to the bedroom to get dressed for the day as she wanted to go to a concert she had bought tickets for, As the concert would start around two that day and it was now a quarter past ten in the morning. Which meant she only had a few hours before the concert and it was almost a two hour drive to get to the concert hall it was being held in. Meaning she would have to leave soon. Once she was fully dressed from what she has slept in she made her was out to the kitchen to make herself something to eat. After Amber decided what she would like for breakfast she started grabbing the required pans and bowls to make herself some pancakes. A little while later Mack returned home and was carrying in his rifle. Walking right past Amber not paying any heed to her as he went to the armory after tossing her the bag with the three big boxes of tampons she had asked Mack to pick up not realizing he would get such a large amount of them for her. She expected him to just get her the small box of twenty instead of brining back around ninety divided between the three carton’s he had bought her. As she then noticed the sour look on Mack’s face and asked him what was wrong. At this point Mack was starting to get irritated more by the fact it seemed like he could never retire peacefully from that line of work. As he then opened the false wall he had gone into earlier as Amber watched. As Mack walked into the hidden room and placed his old faithful on the bench he looked over to the rack he had and contemplated what belt fed to pull from the rack before reaching under the table and pressing the red button mounted to the table. Once Mack pressed the button a sizeable portion of the ceiling swung down revealing a set of twenty millimeter anti material rifles and fifty caliber semi automatic rifles as he then walked over to the twenty and started to un latch it from the restraints holding it in place. Meanwhile Amber was curios what Mack was doing so she walked towards Mack to see what was in that room she didn’t know about. As Ambers jaw dropped seeing all of those weapons in that one room she started to walk away scared Mack would harm her, When she then reached for her phone to call Cole whom was her brother whom was a year and a half older then her. To ask Cole what to do. A few rings later Cole picked up the phone saying “ What now sis? “ as Amber then started to ask Cole what she should do after seeing Mack’s arsenal. Once Cole realized what Amber was mumbling through the phone he asked her to describe the gun he was grabbing to get a since of the issue at hand. As Amber was not very familiar with fire arms she just said it was really huge and was bolted to the wall when Cole abruptly hung up the phone and began to call Mack’s arsenal room phone. Mack begrudgingly picked up the phone asking what Cole wanted knowing that the only person who knew that number was Cole. Cole then asked in one simple and to the point question “ How bad is it? “ when Mack said “very” before hanging up the phone. Cole instantly knew that shit was about to go down in town and started scrolling through his phone looking for the contacted labeled “Viper 6-6” before sending him a text that was encoded behind a false message. Which read “ todays going to be a Sunny day in town why don’t you bring the whole family over for a barbeque. “ before snapping the phone he had in half and tossed it in the fire place in his house. Therefore destroying the device so no one could ping the location off the device.
