2024.05.23 03:04 Almaron USA Corps Areas, Generals and the Civil War

Yup, another Civil War lore list from me...although with this one I need some feedback from the community! With the current gameplay lore for the American Civil War, the starting borders of each faction are meant to be determined by either state governors declaring for one or by military forces from a neighbouring state moving in and securing the area...but there's another factor which thus far has been overlooked; the 'corps area' system which was in place during this time, where the USA was divided into nine military districts which were responsible for administering military bases and army divisions stationed inside each area - see here for an incredibly useful contemporary map here showing each district and all the resources under their control.
Granted, it could be argued that this system might not exist in the same form in the KRTL because it was implemented in the aftermath of World War I and because MacArthur began the process of replacing it when he was Chief of Staff, but I think there's a case to be made for it to still be included because...well, firstly, even though MacArthur had begun the process of replacing it, the system itself still existed in 1937, but the main reason is because it would allow for inspiration to be taken from another conflict happening at this point in time; the Spanish Civil War! To quickly summarise the relevant part, before the war broke out, the leaders of the Nationalist faction had a plan to stage a quick coup by either recruiting or supplanting the commanders of the eight military districts that Spain was divided into at the time. In the end, their plan only half worked, and they ended up in control of the northern districts (which you might recall from Vanilla HOI4 as that huge area that the Nationalists get control of via their focus tree) and a few isolated cities, leading to war from there.
Now, I'm not saying that every soldier in the USA would immediately defect to a rebel faction just because their superior declared for one (although on that note technically that's not too different from the current setup where a governor is able to do the same thing and face no real resistance), just that it's worth considering what impact the commanders of each corps area could have on the war and the starting borders; maybe some of the faction Field Marshals in-game should be commanders who defected to the enemy, and some of their starting resources and borders be the result of said commander turning over control of key bases to them? At the very least, the commanders who stayed loyal should be added to the game as Generals who can lead armies...
Anyhoo, so we can start going over that, here's a list of who commanded each area during the 1930s, taken from this immensely useful document here (for some reason nobody's bothered to stick it on Wikipedia yet so their equivalent lists are woefully incomplete). Most of these figures are fairly minor ones who lack Wikipedia pages and so it'd be easy to replace them with a more iconic figure of a similar rank...

Maj. Gen. Jay L. Benedict 3 November 1941–2 April 1942
Looking over that, some quick thoughts and conclusions come to mind;
*Fox Conner probably shouldn't be leading the First Corps Area, considering in the current version of the game he defects to the AUS and thus would have presumably declared for them when the fighting started - unless, of course, that was to be made an event where he did declare for them only to face resistance and then flee south with all the AUS loyalists in the area. Whoever replaces him could then become a Field Marshal for New England if it forms (of his OTL successors, only James A. Woodruff has a Wikipedia page), along with whoever's leading the Second Corps Area...potentially OTL's Frank R. McCoy?
*Given the proximity to D.C., the Third Corps Area's commander is presumably going to be a member of the Federalists...but is there a chance it could be MacArthur himself? Right now in the KRTL lore, MacArthur is said to be the Chief of Staff instead of OTL's Malin Craig so that he's in a position to seize power, but would it be plausible for him to simply be a General stationed nearby (perhaps one who's only recently returned from the Philippines, which would have got their independence sooner as a result of the earlier Great Depression) who's got troops under his control and who can march on D.C. if ordered to do so by a group of incumbent politicians fearful of the prospect of losing to a radical? From there, whoever is the actual Chief of Staff could defect to the PSA and MacArthur could take their place...
*Almost too conveniently, George Van Horn Moseley was actually commanding the Fourth Corps Area in 1937 (and simultaneously the Third Army) which corresponds with the heartland of the AUS, so it seems likely that when the fighting started he'd have declared for Long straight away.
*James K. Parsons should probably be shifted from his OTL position of Third Corps Area commander in 1938 to either the Fifth or Sixth Corps area, because at present he's the only general on this list to actually declare for the CSA, and his presence in either area would help to explain their starting strength. On that note, the odds of both areas having CSA-friendly leaders would probably be a bit of a stretch, so chances are the other commander - if looking to OTL, that'd be either William E. Cole or Charles D. Herron - would be a loyalist who's either captured by the CSA at the start of the war or who flees to the Federalists.
*Given that the territory covered by the Seventh and Eighth Corps Areas can remain under Federalist control in certain paths and only end up being lost because of rebel advances or troop consolidation elsewhere, it's safe to assume their commanders are loyal ones who wouldn't defect. In OTL these areas were held by Stanley H. Ford and Herbert J. Brees, although it's also possible that Johnson Hagood could be in charge of the Eighth Corps Area as he only lost the position in 1936 as a result of criticising FDR and the New Deal, which obviously wouldn't happen here. This presumably means he'd not be fond of Huey Long and his proposed reforms either, meaning the current scenario in-game where the Federalists and AUS fight over Southern Texas (where the Eighth Corps Area had its HQ) could be expanded into Hagood either securing control over the area or being forced to retreat to the Southwestern states.
*The Ninth Corps Area is a curious one because the territory it covers corresponds with the PSA's starting land and three of its historic leaders are in-game already as generals (MacArthur and Craig for the Federalists, and DeWitt for the PSA), but since most of it can go over to MacArthur if he's based in Denver (reducing the PSA to just a localised Californian governor's revolt), it suggests whoever's in charge has mixed allegiances. Is it worth keeping OTL's George S. Simonds, or is it better to put someone like Malin Craig or John L. DeWitt in his place?
...and now I turn it over to you in the comments. Are there some military historians out there who could chime in and elaborate on some of the names listed here and whether they'd be likely to join any of the factions in the civil war, or whether there's a better alternative out there who could be leading one of the regions? Lemme hear your thoughts.

2024.05.22 22:29 itsnotsymphonie Pace VS The New School (Very anxious & I need some guidance/help picking one!!)

Hello. I’m conflicted. I’ve wanted to go to school in NYC. Specifically Art School & now I’ve finally been accepted to a few schools. Now the hard part is making a decision & actually picking one.
-I was accepted to SVA. I was accepted 2 years ago too. The curriculum seems expansive, but the tuition is 80k+, the financial aid is ASS & they don’t even have a dining hall. I never truly wanted to go there anyway. So, I'm not going there. It’s decided. Plus it’s for-profit…ew. (I know all colleges for profit but this one is REALLY for-profit)
-A week ago, I was accepted to Pace with a 22k scholarship (even with the scholarship it’s still expensive, 58k left over to pay out of pocket.) Very grateful for the scholarship. I sent in the deposit using money I did not have just to hold my fucking spot.
-I was just accepted to The New School today. I didn’t want to get my hopes up & didn’t. But I was pleasantly & painfully surprised this morning. Pleasantly, because it was one of the top schools on my list…I was proud of myself for actually getting in. Painfully, because I know the tuition is going to pound my ass. I don’t come from money. I don’t come from anything at all. I’m from a low income family. Haven’t gotten to see the financial aid package yet. But I know I wasn’t offered a scholarship like Pace. I applied for Parsons, & was rejected, but was given admission to Eugene Lang. If I end up going with The New School, I’ll be choosing the Visual Arts concentration. I’ve always wanted to go to Art School. I like unorthodox, hands on/project based, non-traditional & weird curriculum. I like hands-on work. I don’t wanna do boring fucking generic Math class. I want to dive headfirst into what I came for. Studying & creating art!
I’ll be living on campus & I'm worried about navigating that. This is my first time away from home & I’m not sure about literally anything. Still trying to remain strong in spite of.
Also, I'm an out of state student from Michigan who’s low income, with a single parent & an EFC of $0. Fun!
I guess my main questions for Pace are:
-Why do people hate Pace? Went on tik tok & everyone hates it apparently… :/
-How are the classes & facilities for BFA Photography/Art students? Are these facilities worth the price tag?
-Are there gluten free dining options? (I’m not gluten free by choice, it makes me ill. not celiac.) Is the food decent?
-Is what Pace gives you worth it for the price? -How are the dorms? I’m eyeing 33 Beekman & 15 Beekman.
-Are there communal cooking spaces?
-How hard is it to get a single room? I ask this as someone who’s covid conscious & getting sick is not an option. I simply can’t afford to!
-How hard is it to make friends? I'm pretty worried about this. I don’t know anyone in nyc yet.
-if you’re an alumnus, do you feel that you got out everything you could from the school/experience? Do you regret it? What were the best parts? How’s your career now & what do you do?
-What are the pros & cons of Pace? The good, the bad & the ugly. Hit me.
Main Questions for the The New School:
-Why do people hate The New School? I’ve seen multiple videos of everyone also hating it.
-How are the classes & facilities for Eugene/Visual Art students? Are the facilities worth the price tag?
-Are there gluten free dining options? Is the food decent?
-Is what TNS gives you worth it for the price?
-How are the dorms? (please dear god don’t say flooding…) I’m eyeing Kerrey & Stuyvesant.
-Are there communal cooking spaces?

-How hard is it to make friends? I'm pretty worried about this. I don’t know anyone in nyc yet.
-Is everyone out of touch with reality & extremely rich like it seems? 😵‍💫
-What are the pros & cons of TNS? The good, the bad & the ugly. Hit me.
-if you’re an alumnus, do you feel that you got out everything you could from the school/experience? Do you regret it? What were the best parts? How’s your career now & what do you do?
I’m very conflicted looking for guidance on which one to pick. Trying to make a final decision by the beginning of next week.
Thank you in advance. :)

-How hard is it to get a single room? I ask this as someone who’s covid conscious & getting sick is not an option. I simply can’t afford to!
-How hard is it to make friends? I'm pretty worried about this. I don’t know anyone in nyc yet.

Suffice to say, i think this shows how much I love the new app and the new idea
Literally within 10 mins of getting the app and paying, I added so many videos and left a long, detailed Review on the app store
This app is seriously great:
Considering these are just a couple of silly friends goofing around. They do such amazing detailed work with everything, like their heart is there and thats clear everyday.
Like I was worried the Try guys would slowly fade away after the scandal just cause I only saw food content and while I do love Keith, it got just so overdone that I stopped watching, and they were right the Youtube algorithmn probably hurt them in this way. But they did what they do best; try and try until they succeed
Im not sure if this counts as advertising? I hope not, im just genuinely happy for them all cause with this app, I feel energy to rewatch the many old videos and all the new ones :). Especially not that they have total freedom with their content, which is what they always wanted.

2024.05.22 18:45 ChickenPeaof2021 Local 290 work outlook?

I was accepted as an apprentice transfer into the 290 plumbing apprenticeship and have been sitting for a few months. They don’t post any sort of out of work list for apprentices and they aren’t super transparent about what things are looking like for work right now. I’ve done my orientation at the training center and my swearing in. I chose the valley for my zones, Salem area and Eugene area. I know a lot of the work is up in Portland but I really didn’t think I’d be sitting for this long. I’m wondering if I should continue to wait it out or if I should call and ask to be put in the Portland zone so I can get picked up. I’m just not sure what is typical for the area I’m in, if it’s always a long wait to get picked up or what.
I also have a buddy that’s a union carpenter and he told me that I need to go to job sites and ask for a job, and that’s how people really get picked up, but that doesn’t sound right? Any advice or perspective would be appreciated. TIA

2024.05.22 18:42 WestbourneX862AA Are there any movies you think do need sequels, and those that really don't?

I read about suggestions for Challengers sequel at https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/movies/a60636251/challengers-2-cast-news/ but does it really need a sequel; I've not yet seen it, the last tennis movie I saw was King Richard.
Surely Challengers is standalone enough to not need a sequel or create its own universe?
Then again, if it did create a franchise would you think "Is this worthwhile?"
When do you think sequels have dragged down a movie and thought "God, NOT ANOTHER sequel.... I thought we'd finished the original movie"?
I can remember this response from some friends about those National Lampoon movies; about the only ones people I knew could remember were the European Vacation and Christmas vacation. Anyone ever seen the Alvin and the Chipmunks parody of the European Vacation - Irrational Buffoon's European Vacation, made in 1990, an episode of Alvin and The Chipmunks, now retitled The Chipmunks Go To The Movies.
Then again, that franchise has been very YMMV; as it were most people who had seen the films only knew of the European Vacation and Christmas Vacation, this was in the 1990s and 2000s when I was about 14-19 years old. The original films weren't quite that well known.
I'm only speaking empirically here about that one.
But I remember seeing the 2015 film Vacation being critically panned.
For me, sometimes I don't mind sequels to some things; Guardians of the Galaxy is a campy, fun movie that takes me away from the darker corners of the MCU; and No Time To Die was brilliant; Daniel Craig is great as Bond. I hope his replacement can live up to him! James Bond films are sometimes stand-alone aren't they?
It could be argued Splash, Too, which I haven't seen, is a weak sequel based on reviews by critics. It seems to have got poor reviews compared to the original. As it were, I remember the original film airing when I was a teenager, it used to get TV airings every so often. Admittedly the film is very Eighties and sorta pseudo-John Hughes in some ways, maybe the romance that some consider odd like mentioned at https://www.ranker.com/list/things-that-are-in-every-john-hughes-movie/zack-howe and the setting, and mixed with love story. Good that Johnny Rose from Schitt's Creek is in it too alongside Tom Hanks! That is one I may rewatch one day if it's back on BBC/ITV/Channel 4 here.
I'm not trying to bash certain films for the sake of it, but discuss sequels etc. before anyone thinks this is about criticizing.
The general point is, when do you think a standalone work doesn't need sequels and stands alone as it is?
