The Ford Corcel, Ford Belina, Ford Del Rey and Ford Pampa. The history of a Brazilian car, made by an American brand and with French origins. Long post.
THE BEGINNING: The Corcel is a medium-sized automobile produced by Ford in Brazil, from 1968 to 1986. Willys Overland do Brasil in a partnership with Renault were involved in a project for a new passenger car, a project that became known at the time as "Project M" which years later, in France became the Renault 12 and in Brazil gave rise to the Ford Corcel, due to the purchase of Willys Overland do Brasil by Ford in 1967, with this, all Willys do Brasil projects and vehicles are now controlled by Ford. "Project M" "Project M", now managed by Ford, is now called Ford Corcel and thanks to Ford, the vehicle project undergoes a series of improvements to adapt to the terrible driving conditions in Brazil.
THE ENGINES AND OTHER THINGS:
·1.3 RENAULT ENGINE (1968): Under the hood, the Corcel was equipped with a 1300 cc four-cylinder Renault engine. This engine developed 68 hp and 9.8 kg/m or 6.58 lb/ft of torque. This power, combined with the weight of 945 kg or 2083 pounds, allowed the car to go from 0 - 100 km/h or 0 - 62 mph in 23 seconds and reach a top speed of 129 km/h or 80.15 mph. One thing that was highly praised about the car was its consumption, averaging 10 km/l or 23.5 mpg in the city and 13.4 km/l or 31.5 mpg on the highway. The Ford Corcel had good safety by Brazilian standards at that time, the car had things like the split steering column, allowing it to deform and not hurt the driver too much in a crash, the hood opening forward, making that, even if the driver leaves it open, the force of the wind will not allow it to open and block the driver's view, the brakes, which were already efficient, could be improved with the optional disc brakes instead of drums, the Corcel also came with a sealed cooling circuit, being the first Brazilian car to feature this feature.
·IMPROVED 1.3 RENAULT ENGINE (1969 - 1971 CORCEL GT): Under the hood, the 1969 Corcel GT's engine was still the same 1.3 from Renault, but certain improvements to the package increased power to 80 hp and torque to 10 kg/m or 6.71 lb/ft. With this power, the Corcel GT did 0 - 100 km/h or 0 - 62 mph in 20 seconds and reached a top speed of 138 km/h or 85.7 mph.
·1.4 RENAULT GT-XP ENGINE (1972 CORCEL GT-XP): The engine, still of Renault origin, now has 1400 cc and has several improvements that made it develop 85 hp and 11.6 kg/m or 7.79 lb/ft of torque. This made the Corcel GT-XP go from 0 - 100 km/h or 0 - 62 mph in 16.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 144 km/h or 89.4 mph.
·1.4 RENAULT ENGINE (1973 CORCEL): Another new feature was the 1.4 engine with 75 hp and 11.6 kg/m or 7.79 lb/ft, which became standard for all versions.
·MODIFIED 1.4 RENAULT ENGINE (1978 CORCEL II): The Corcel II was equipped with the same 1.4 Renault engine as the first generation Corcel, but with power reduced to 72 hp. With these modifications, the new Corcel II accelerated from 0 - 100 km/h or 0 - 62 mph in 17.2 seconds and reached a top speed of 150 km/h or 93.2 mph. The Corcel II averaged 8.5 km/l or 19.9 mpg in the city and up to 13 km/l or 30.5 mpg on the highway.
·1.6 ENGINE AND 5-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION (CORCEL II GT 1979): The 1.6 engine and 5-speed manual transmission become standard in this version. This engine developed 90 hp and 13 kg/m or 8.73 lb/ft of torque. This engine combined with the new 5-speed gearbox made the Corcel II GT accelerate from 0 - 100 km/s or 0 - 62 mph in 15.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 151 km/h or 93.8 mph.
DESIGN / FACELIFTS / NEW GENERATIONS;
·FIRST DESIGN (1968): The Ford Corcel stood out on its debut for presenting a beautiful appearance, made up of straight lines, with emphasis on its front, which was marked by creases on the hood and by the chrome grille with horizontal friezes, highlighting the raised central part so that could follow the creases of the hood, the circular headlights were accompanied by the driving lights located at the bottom of the grille. Below the assembly was the chrome bumper with the space for the license plate in the center. On its side, the look is marked by the charm of the four-door sedan body and the crease that runs along the entire side of the car, the 13-inch wheels were accompanied by chrome hubcaps. At the rear, the highlight is the rectangular-shaped taillights and the chrome bumper. Another highly praised detail of its design was the large glass area, which favored visibility in all directions.
·FIRST FACELIFT (1971): In 1971, the Corcel received its first restyling, with a new grille with horizontal and vertical friezes and a new emblem in the center, the driving lights are now located below the bumper, and at the rear the only new feature is the four square-shaped taillights, two on each side.
SECOND FACELIFT (1973): In 1973, the Corcel underwent a new facelift, this time much deeper and concentrated mainly on the front of the car, it gained a new hood, with a more aerodynamic design, in addition to a new grille with vertical friezes, a new emblem in the center and new headlight frames, the license plate left the bumper and began to be positioned below it, while the driving lights gained a new design, at the rear the lanterns gained a new design, having a rectangular shape and having reverse lights integrated with them. Inside the car, the only new feature is the dashboard which, regardless of the version, was only offered in a matte black colour.
·THIRD FACELIFT (1975): For the year 1975, the Corcel received a new facelift, with a lower hood that had the logo at the center and the Ford name on the right, a new grille, now made of plastic with horizontal stripes, new hubcaps, split tail lights and an gauge cluster with square dials.
·THE NEW GENERATION FORD CORCEL II (1977): The new second generation Corcel arrived with a beautiful look that followed the trend of the time, made up of straight lines and a two-door body with a fastback style rear, in addition, it is also worth highlighting the new look of its front, made up of headlights rectangular and new driving lights located at the ends next to the headlights, in the center the new engine cooling grille was painted in black and had the Ford logo in the center, but the main highlight of this new grille came from the aerodynamic design. of its horizontal blades, which provided a more intense air flow even at lower speeds, while the bumper, depending on the version, could be painted black or chrome. This new generation lost the option of a four-door body due to the fact that at that time, Brazilians only preferred cars with two doors, but to facilitate access when getting in or out of the vehicle, the most efficient solution was to adopt huge doors, which helped even the rear seat occupants. The main highlight at the rear of this sedan is the smooth fit of the C column, which went all the way to the trunk lid, while the license plate came out of the bumper and is positioned between the rear lights, which have a cleaner, more rectangular design. Inside, the new Corcel was more luxurious and sophisticated, featuring a fully carpeted interior and reclining front seats. The new panel was marked by a beautiful look that followed the trend of the time. Made entirely of plastic and with details such as a radio in the center and two rectangular ventilation outlets at the ends. The instrument panel had information in three circular markers, the first with a speedometer, the second, in the center, with an analog clock and the third with a fuel level marker and warning lights.
·1979 TWEAKS: In 1979 the car was slightly modified, gaining new transparent front lights and new rear lights with a beaded design in addition to a new four-spoke steering wheel for the LDO version. In addition to new options such as 5-speed gearbox, headlight washers and a new 1.6 engine.
·1980 TWEAKS: In 1980, the Ford Corcel II received new bumpers with plastic tips, a coolant temperature marker and options such as radial tires, three-point seat belts and a smoked sunroof, while the GT version gets a red trim next to the black paintwork.
1982: In 1982, the Corcel II line received improvements to the gearbox and suspension, in addition to a new central console with digital clock and air conditioning, which was only offered as an option.
1984: In 1984 the Ford Corcel II received new headrests and a new two-spoke steering wheel.
VARIANTS;
·CORCEL TWO DOOR COUPE (1969): The Corcel began to be a great success, and because of this Ford decided to expand the options in 1969, and the first of them was the two-door coupé version, standing out for its sportier look, thanks to the look of the rear side with lines reminiscent of muscle cars and the rear part of the roof that had a smooth slope to the height of the trunk. Another reason why this version was highly acclaimed was the fact that at that time Brazilians had a great preference for cars with just two doors.
TRIM LEVELS;
·CORCEL STANDARD: Initially the Ford Corcel was only available in the most basic version, called Standard. It had a simple but well-finished interior, with emphasis on the internal space, enough to seat 5 people in relative comfort, thanks to the one-piece seats and good wheelbase. The dashboard also had a simple design, with a glove box, ashtray and radio. The gauge cluster only had the essentials for the time, that is: fuel level gauge, speedometer, engine temperature gauge and warning lights. The huge steering wheel has two spokes, and the transmission was a four-speed manual with a lever on the floor.
·CORCEL LUXO (1969): In 1969 the luxury version of the Corcel was released. It had a more sophisticated finish, with details such as trims, various chrome parts, new interior linings, individual front seats with reclining backrests and a panel with new details such as a padded upper part and applications that imitate rosewood.
·CORCEL GT (1969): Launched in 1969 and aimed at a younger audience, the Corcel GT was only available in a two-door coupe version. It had details such as a vinyl roof with the GT logo on the C-pillar, stripes on the sides, black paint on the hood and rear, fog lights, and claws with a rubberized finish on the bumpers. Inside, the GT version featured a new three-spoke sports steering wheel, forced ventilation with two speeds and a complete gauge cluster with: speedometer, rev counter, oil level gauge, fuel level gauge, engine temperature gauge and a voltmeter for the battery.
·CORCEL GT (1971 FACELIFT): The GT version also received a facelift to accompany the others, with high beam headlights embedded in the grille, the grille was even painted in black and had the GT emblem in the center, the hood was also painted matte black and had a fake air vent in the center.
·CORCEL GT-XP (1972): In 1972, the Corcel GT gained a new name and more improvements, such as new wheels with a sporty design, new side stripes, while the markers, previously located in the central part of the panel, were now grouped together on the new central console.
·CORCEL GT-XP (1973): The Corcel GT-XP brought new visual features such as new rectangular headlights integrated into the grille, new side stripes, and two stripes on the hood, similar to those of the Ford Mustang.
·CORCEL LDO (1975): In 1975 was the even more luxurious version called LDO and stood out for presenting a more sophisticated finish, with a vinyl roof, chrome trim on the wheel arches, painted filets on the sides and the same sports wheels as the GT-XP version but without the black paintwork. Inside, it gained new interior linings, dashboard and seats in brown and beige and an exclusive steering wheel.
·CORCEL GT-XP (1975): The Corcel GT-XP only received aesthetic updates, such as new stripes on the sides and hood and new exterior mirrors.
·CORCEL II STANDARD (1978): This version of the Corcel II came without side moldings, had bumpers painted black and came with wheels that had a closed central core.
·CORCEL II L (1978): The intermediate version featured moldings in the middle of the side, chrome bumpers, wheels with a red central core or a crown design in the center.
·CORCEL II LDO (1978): The luxurious LDO version was equipped with chrome bumpers that had rubberized details, moldings at the bottom of the side and new wheels also with a red central core and a silver crown design in the center. The LDO version brought the charm of a monochromatic leather interior with applications that imitated rosewood.
·CORCEL II GT (1978): The new Corcel II GT had a look marked by black paint on the upper part of the body up to the C column, which was surrounded by fillets in yellow and red, black wheels with chrome over rims and high-flying headlights located below the bumper. Inside, the new features are the new three-spoke sports steering wheel, the rev counter on the instrument panel, and the new instrumentation on the central console, which included the oil level marker and the battery voltmeter. The engine was not changed, continuing with the same 72 hp as the other versions.
·CORCEL II GT (1979): This year the GT version undergoes improvements, such as new black stripes located on the lower part of the body, stiffer suspension and black bumpers.
·CORCEL II HOBBY (1980): It was in 1980 that the new version, called Corcel II Hobby, was launched. Aimed at a younger audience, the Hobby version stood out for its cooler look, marked by the bodywork without chrome details and the black wheels with chrome rims. Inside, this version featured red and black trim, the sports steering wheel of the GT version and an instrument panel with a silver finish.
·CORCEL II OS CAMPEÕES SPECIAL SERIES (1982): This special series featured details such as black paint with gold details, gold wheels, fog lights, black leather and black velvet interior, instrument panel with rev counter, digital clock on the center console, five-speed gearbox and options such as a sunroof, radio cassette player and air conditioning.
THE FORD DEL REY: The Del Rey was a Ford luxury sedan launched in the early 1980s and discontinued ten years later, having been replaced by the Versailles. It is a medium sedan, with three well-defined volumes, a choice of two or four doors and robust engines. The model was derived from the Corcel and in its line there was also the station wagon version, called Del Rey Scala and the Pampa pickup truck.
·BEFORE LAUNCH: Ford had a big problem to face in the late 1970s. With the new decade, Ford began to remodel its cars with modern designs coming from North America so as not to lose sales to more modern models. As the market was in crisis, it was not possible to invest well in a new model, an option taken in the 1970s when they brought the Ford Maverick to the American market, an option revealed to be wrong later, as the initial project was to bring the Ford Taunus. The solution was to call for the creation of a new model, but with an existing platform on the national market. The options were to create a car based on the four-door Maverick, increasing its rear space, which was the model's biggest problem, or to create a product based on the Corcel II platform, launched two years earlier.
In a clinic, two models were displayed to test consumer opinion, and the one chosen was the one that resembled the final design of the Ford Del Rey. A medium sedan, with three well-defined volumes, the option of two or four doors and an economical engine. , being the alternative to avoid higher costs. The model was based on the Ford Granada MKII models, a large model from English Ford manufactured at the same time, and the Ford Taunus, also from European Ford, but from Germany. They were very similar both front and rear, as well as the side, despite the Brazilian model being smaller.
·FIRST GENERATION (1981 - 1984): The Ford Del Rey debuted in mid-1981 and could be found in Gold and basic versions (popularly called "Silver"). It was a car with a refined finish, reminiscent of its older brother, the Ford Corcel under construction, but at the same time reminiscent of the good old Galaxie/Landau. The most complete version came as standard with items that were not common even in cars of its category, such as light alloy wheels, electric windows, electric door locks, rear view mirrors with internal control, velvet seats, fog lights, digital clock located on the central rear view mirror, among other things. The model received an automatic transmission as an option in 1983, and in 1984 it received the CHT engine, a revision of the old 1.6 engine of Renault origin that equipped the Corcel GT, and which was revised to equip the recently arrived Ford Escort. The engine did a lot of good for the model which, despite being economical, suffered during accelerations and restarts, and was the target of criticism from its owners, always losing in comparisons with the main competitors of its time, such as Chevrolet Opala, Volkswagen Santana and after 1985 , the Chevrolet Monza.
SECOND GENERATION (1985 - 1991): In 1985 Ford made some changes to the model, which would remain practically intact until the end of its life in mid-1991. The already tired sedan gained a new front, similar to that of the Ford Corcel, with a “grille” aerodynamics and a spoiler that served as a frame for the fog lights. The model began to have other names. The Silver and Gold were discontinued and the GL entered as a basic version, GLX as an intermediate and the Ghia as a top-of-the-line version. It lost the refinement of alloy wheels, but gained new items. The rim increased to 14 inches and was the first non-sports car in Brazil to use a 60 profile. The 1987 model featured electric rear-view mirrors. With the Ford Corcel leaving the line the previous year, Ford created the L version, with a more stripped-down finish, to fill the gap between the Escort and the Del Rey. In 1988 the model had no relevant changes.
With the merger of Volkswagen and Ford in 1987, Autolatina was created, a large company that came to dominate the market and almost cannibalized Ford of Brazil. The Del Rey was one of the few models that profited from this merger, as it gained the more modern AP 1.8 engine (which was equipped with the Volkswagen Santana). With a small performance gain, its top speed rose from 146 km/h to around 156 km/h, and its acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h went from 16.50 in the 1986 GLX version to around 13.88 seconds, due to the new gear reduction and small increase in power. The Del Rey received some mechanical changes, recalibrated springs at the rear to improve the “anti-dive” effect when accelerating and “anti-squat” when braking. The exterior mirror received a modified base in 1989. The last really notable difference between the models with the 1.6 and 1.8 engines was the consumption, which had increased slightly.
In 1991 the Del Rey was taken out of production. It is a model well remembered for the modernity it had in its time, as its bigger brother (Ford Landau) did not have many modern features (such as electric windows, electric locks and electric mirrors). Its replacement, the Ford Versailles, was not as successful due to its lack of charisma.
THE FORD BELINA: During the development of the M project (later named Corcel) in partnership with Renault, Willys-Overland do Brasil was studying the project of a station wagon/van to occupy the market niche left by the end of DKW-Vemag Vemaguet in 1967 At the same Volkswagen do Brasil was working on a similar project for a while, the Variant station wagon. After the purchase of Willys do Brasil by Ford, the M project continued to be developed. On August 26, 1968, the M project was presented at Clube Pinheiros in São Paulo during the Ford-Willys dealer convention. Named Corcel, the new vehicle was being launched on the market to compete with the VW Beetle. At the same event, Ford presented the prototype of a Corcel station wagon in September 1968. The first prototype of the Corcel station wagon was seen circulating around the factory in São Bernardo do Campo undergoing tests.
Ford even transported a prototype station wagon to its stand at the VI São Paulo Motor Show, with its management undecided about showing the model. In the end, the station wagon ended up not being shown. Instead of launching, Ford chose to carry out further tests of two models: two and four doors (never adopted for series production). The tests were carried out throughout 1969 on Estrada Velha de Santos.
The Ford Belina was launched on the market on March 3, 1970, approximately three months after the Volkswagen Variant.[6] After the launch of Variant and Belina, VW and Ford began an “advertising war” in the station wagon market, with each factory praising its product and criticizing its competitor. In the end, the German automaker prevailed with the argument of the simple and robust mechanics of the air engine (the same as the Volkswagen Beetle). Thus, the Variant's production was around six times greater than that of the Belina.
In one of the first tests carried out by the press, unusual wear was noticed on the Belina's front tires. An error was later discovered in the adjustment of the front suspension of the Corcel-Belina line, which forced Ford to call on all owners of Corcel-Belina line vehicles manufactured between 1969 and 1970 to come to Ford dealerships to have the suspension readjusted. Despite not requiring replacement of parts, this was considered the first recall in Brazil.
The bad reputation brought about by the problem affected Belina production, which went from 7831 (1970) to 5306 (1971) vehicles. The drop in production forced Ford to invest in the relaunch of the Corcel-Belina line in 1972. The main change for the Belina was the adoption of the 75 HP XP engine, replacing the original 68 HP. The production of mixed-use trucks (including station wagons) was encouraged by market acceptance. Between the first quarter of 1973 and 1975 there was a 26% growth in the production of mixed-use trucks (including station wagons) while car production in the country fell 3.9%.
In 1973 production reached almost thirteen thousand copies. The Belina went through a period of growth in production that did not change even with the launch of the Chevrolet Caravan on the market in 1975. Derived from the Opala, the Caravan station wagon began to compete with the Belina for the market. Thus, Ford adopted a second restyling of the Belina in 1975, with changes to the front and improvements in the design and the adoption of a gas shock absorber to support the trunk lid instead of the obsolete spring shock absorber it used. The arrival of the Caravan and the launch of the remodeled Belina put pressure on the Variant, which began to lose market share until it was discontinued in 1977. At the same time, the Belina project, derived from the Corcel, was feeling the weight of age (given that it was from the 1960) and needed replacement.
THE BELINA II: With the launch of the Chevrolet Chevette in Brazil (and the expectation of a future derivative station wagon launch), the announcement of FIAT's arrival in Brazil and the announcement of the launch of the Dodge 1800, Ford began studying changes to the Corcel line. Inherited from the acquisition of Willys-Overland do Brasil, the Corcel was a Renault project from the 1960s ready when it was taken over by Ford. At the end of 1973, the American multinational carried out the first restyling study of the Corcel. Belina, however, was not initially included because its competition was limited to the Variant. This later changed with the arrival of the Chevrolet Caravan and rumors of the production of a Dodge station wagon (which ended up not being released) and the Chevette station wagon. The redesigned Belina first appeared in print in October 1976.
In 1978, the Belina received a modern update, when it was renamed Belina II, incorporating the main changes of the Corcel II, with straight lines. The versions were the L, simpler, and luxurious LDO.
THE DEL REY SCALA: Derived from the Del Rey, the Scala was launched in 1983, being an evolution of the Belina. Available in a single version: Gold. With a superior finish, it introduced new equipment to the category: electric locks and windows, a ceiling console with a digital clock, reading lights and a panel that even had an oil pressure gauge. Air conditioning was optional. Initially, power steering was not offered, not even as an option. It was equipped with a 1.6 engine with 69 hp. In 1984 it received ventilated disc brakes at the front and its power increased slightly: 73 hp.
In 1985 it received a facelift, with a new front and interior changes. It was now offered in two versions: GLX and Ghia. In 1986 it received power steering and a CHT E-Max engine.
There was also a 4X4 version, launched in 1985 and discontinued in 1987, due to the high incidence of mechanical failures in the system.
In 1987, it was called Belina again. Its production lasted until 1991, when it was discontinued to make way for the Ford Royale. At that time, Belina's sales represented half of the Del Rey family.
FORD PAMPA: The Pampa was based on the second generation of the Corcel and was presented at the 1982 Motor Show, designed to compete with the Fiat Fiorino, Volkswagen Saveiro and Chevy 500.
In the 1984 model, the first changes occurred, receiving the CHT engine, more powerful and economical. The 1600 cm³ CHT engine had 75 HP on alcohol and 73 HP on gasoline, respectively allowing the Pampa to reach a maximum speed of 145 km/h and 140 km/h. The 4x4 model, launched in the same year together with the Belina 4x4, was equipped with a four-speed gearbox, a one-piece seat and also had a second fuel tank in the alcohol version, for an additional 40 liters. Its interior was much more basic than the pioneering 4x2 model.
In 1986, the basic, L and GL models came into existence, and in that same year the entire Pampa line received the front grille of the 4x4 version for the 1987 model. It was similar to the Del Rey, in addition to gaining the Ghia version with luxury items from the Del Rey Ghia model. These include a complete dashboard, windows and electric locks. Despite this, Pampa no longer has air conditioning, only offering hot air as an option.
The Pampa had always been the leader among light pickup trucks until then and continued in this situation until it was discontinued. In 1990 it received the VW AP-1800 engine, powering the L, GL and Ghia versions. The CHT 1.6 still remains in the L and GL 4x4 versions. The following year the S version arrives, much more sporty and complete, only coming with a 1800 cm³ engine and bringing standard items such as external hooks, protective rubbers for the edges of the bucket, day and night rear view mirror, optional power steering, individual adjustable seats , stylized wheels, personalized stripes on the sides, sliding rear window, front spoiler with built-in fog lights and other items found in the Ghia version, such as an electric trio.
In 1992 the Pampa received a new front grille, identical to that of the Del Rey, which production ended in 1991. Two years later it received an electronic carburetor (2E CE) for the 1800 cm³ engines. In 1995, the Ghia and Jeep GL 1.6 4x4 versions were discontinued, leaving only the L (1.6 and 1.8), GL (1.8) and S (1.8).
The Pampa ceased production in 1997, the model year in which the 1.8 engines were equipped with EEC-IV single-point electronic injection, becoming the best-selling automobile-derived pickup in the segment, exceeding 380,000 units sold. Even in the face of competitors with more modern designs such as the recently launched Corsa pick-up, the second generation of the Saveiro, the third generation of the Fiorino pick-up, and the first generation Hilux imported into Brazil, which was initially a small pick-up, and the Mazda B2200, the Pampa has always been a sales leader, extremely popular, robust and attracting a legion of fans across the country, it was succeeded by the Courier, which never had the same sales figures, and it is often possible to see more Pampas on the streets than Couriers .
TRIVIA;
·What is interesting is that although the Renault and Ford models had completely different designs, they shared the same platform, engines and wheels that had three holes and which became famous in Brazil for exactly this reason.
·The name Corcel, means Steed in Portuguese and was chosen as a homage to the Ford Mustang.

2024.05.21 23:55 onlystonksgoup Trying to see if this makes sense

I own a Jeep and the dealer is offering 21k for it. I owe 8k on it so that’s 13 in equity. I found a 2017 ram 2500 diesel for 39995 and after all negotiations and taxes, trade in etc finance amount is 28k. I’m wondering if it’s something I should just pass on or make the swap. It’s only got 48k miles. I own my house and my income is a little more than 1k a week. Wife brings in a little over 4K every 2 weeks but we do have some debt like her student loans. I pay 505 a month now for my Jeep so I’m sure payments would be close to that.
What’s the finance gurus opinions?

2024.05.21 23:05 halfkeck Lemons aren't always bitter, a 24 Hours of Lemons story. Race 11 Part 1

"You should go to Hallett. We went last year and it was fun. A good track for Miata's"
My friend Gerry the Texan who along with his team brings several Miata's to races all over from Road America to Houston to Seibring. It's a great bunch of people who are having a blast racing Lemons. He told me that and it got me to thinking. We wanted to go to a new track this year and after the disappointment at Barber going somewhere and having some fun sounded good. Also Hallett is noted for having a smaller field so we could be competitive. I always say that Barber is more like a pro level Lemons race in that it attracts the faster and better prepped teams. Road America was like that too.
But first we have to fix the car. As typical, we wait until the race is almost upon us to start. There's the matter of how bad the car is bent from the last race where Manny hit the wall. They thought it was good but we need to check this.
After pulling the rear sub frame in hopes of replacing it we learn that a 90 is a bit different than a 91 subframe or a 2001 subframe. Supposedly it all interchanges but after looking over the differences, Youngest adds a few reinforcements at places the internet gurus say are the weak points and we put the rear end together and put it back in the car. Then we check the alignment. To my great surprise the rear camber and caster is spot on. I was shocked, but the crew did a great job that night fixing the car while it was up on jack stands. Using just a tape measure they got the car really close. Toe was out but the borrowed porta powers got the bent subframe where it needed to be.
We changed the oil and brake fluid, bled the system where we took the rear apart to drop the subframe.
Another project we attempted was to swap in a larger fuel tank. Manny who has been helping with the repairs found a article on the internet that said you could bolt in a NB fuel tank out of a 2001 or so Miata and gain a gallon of fuel capacity. Yeah, that is not possible. The tank has a hump where the car does not and would involve cutting a hole in the car which would be a bit noticeable. Not worth it for such a little gain. Good news is I now have two extra NB tanks if anyone needs one. A gallon would not seem to be that much but we are still dreaming of two stopping the car at certain tracks, stretching our mileage to only stop every two hours and 25 minutes and make a seven hour day with one less stop. It's not all about raw speed, strategy can make a difference. One less stop per day could potentially add ten laps in a weekend of racing at certain tracks.
After we got the subframe in and the car aligned Youngest pulled it all apart again. He was not happy with the bushings holding the rear differential in place. The rear has to move a bit so it is not solid mounted, it actually can pivot a slight bit. He felt the bushings holding it were letting it move too freely.
Once again we put the car back together.
All during this time Manny and FabGuy have been working hard on a new car. Manny got a little crazy on Co-part. First one Miata shows up at our shop. Then another. Then another. I started joking with the guys "Hi I'm Manny, I might have a Miata addiction". Yeah. So after a lot of looking we have three wrecked cars, one being a automatic that was absolutely destroyed. It had zero good body panels and even the front subframe was pushed back where it had got up on something in a wreck. I think the only things we saved off that car was a rear axle, engine, transmission and the hard top which was cracked but usable.
We then robbed enough body parts off of one to put on the other so we ended up with a mostly maroon car with a drivers side red fender, red door and silver hardtop. I say we but all we did at the shop was to take the cars apart, everything else went to Manny's garage where he and FabGuy installed the cage and built the car. They did bring it over a time or two to put in the air to install a few parts or when we aligned it. The build and fitment were top notch on the car, lots of nice parts went in, like a better seat and belts than we use on our Miata. Like most builds they were literally bolting parts to it the night before we loaded the car to head west.
Finally both cars are prepped and it's time to get on the road. Manny has a business where he uses two rollbacks and moves cars mostly to and from car lots and auction lots. So he gets the newer one of the two trucks and shows up at the shop Thursday morning. RacerGuy and I are already there and have hooked our camper to RacerGuys truck. I am leaving my trucks at home, but taking our race trailer and our camper. The plan is to hook the camper to RacerGuys diesel F250 and hook the race trailer to Manny's newish Chevy 4500.
The plan nearly goes off the rails when Manny shows up and I get to looking at his truck. Being in the business I can't not help but look at tires. His drives are terrible, two are bald, one is soft and one showing wire. I go to air up one of the bald ones and it's not having it. Air is leaking out as fast as it was going in. In Manny's defense his employee was driving this truck and Manny had not seen it in weeks. I had already loaded tire tools and extra spare tires for every truck and trailer in the caravan except RacerGuy's truck and I would have got a spare for it too if I had thought about it. With nothing else to do, we all jump in and start busting tires. Forty five minutes later we have four new drives on the truck and we are in a much better spot to make the long drive. I hadn't done any big truck tires for a long time, sold that part of the business. Still got it, just like riding a bike.
We find I40 and start clicking off miles. Manny has already told us the limiting factor which is that GM put a really tiny fuel tank in his truck so we are forced to stop every 160-180 miles for fuel. It slows us down but it's not all bad, we find a roadside BBQ joint that looks like a camper up on blocks that has a huge parking lot and a ton of customers lining up. Of course we try it out, the best BBQ comes from little places like that, not the ones with massive buildings.
We cross Arkansas and I think it was the first time I ever went that way westbound on 40. Came back the other side when we brought the box truck back where we bought it in California. We finally make Oklahoma and bent north to go to Tulsa. Did not see the Tulsa King anywhere, stopped in a Super Walmart and stocked up on groceries for the weekend. Hallett is in the middle of nowhere, so we are planning on eating at the track.
We get there and make our way into the paddock. This will be the first time we have every camped inside the track. They have a cross over with gates that close during when the track is hot and a tunnel for access when the gates are closed. The tunnel looks kind of tight, I'm happy to not test the posted height limits. It says our trailers should fit. Yeah we will wait.
We hustle to get the camper leveled and the generator cranked up. For the next three days it will run non-stop to keep the fridge cold and our lights on. We run the a/c but for the most part temps are very nice.
The next morning we are up and on the road after the drivers meeting. We go to Pawnee, take in some sights then hit Stillwater for some parts and pieces at a hardware store. We also gas up all our empty gas cans so we are ready for race day.
Back at the track Manny and Fabguy are unloading their car off the back of the rollback. It was nice carrying one and towing one car. They go out and practice a bit, come in and make some changes then go out again. It's a new build and everyone has realistic expectations about the car. We are all expecting issues as it takes a while to find the weak spots and fix them.
We get our car out and practice. We send three of the four drivers out and have them run a few laps. I'm about to get ready and go out when RacerGuy comes in and says he felt something pop. We get to looking and the adjuster is gone off the alternator. Look a little more and the bolt has broken off in the alternator. So we have a spare motor in the trailer but it is missing the adjuster. Looks like we need the adjuster, the bolt and the alternator. We make a few visits around the paddock to look for parts but none of the other Miata teams have what we need. Youngest goes into the trailer and in a small miracle finds the adjuster laying under the spare motor loose. He and Coach head into Tulsa on a parts run while Manny agrees to put me into their car for a few laps so I can get a feel for the track. I've watched a hundred laps on Youtube but nothing is like actually driving the track. I go out and don't push things too hard. It is a very worn surface with some patches, particularly in the groove of turn two. Manny's car drives a lot different than ours, you can really tell you have more power and grip. Their tires are a lot wider as well as having 30-40 more hp. They have been working on the car all day and just finished taking off the lines where they installed a remote oil filter, they were not Lemons grade and were leaking.
Just before dark Youngest gets the parts on the car. We also install a helmet blower, we are going to try to use the air to defrost the windshield. All reports indicate rain is coming Sunday.
Then it's dinner time. Our friends from Minnesota have brought pure Lemons art down in the form of a Chrysler Magnum wagon powered by a slant 6 that is mid mounted. It is a engineering feat and runs out nicely. Adam the team leader and I have been planning and they are cooking for us for tonight and we are cooking for them Saturday night. They show us up by putting on a feed with steaks and salad. I'm feeling bad about the fact we are serving hamburgers, coleslaw and potato salad the next night. It was great.
Saturday morning dawns and we are up and moving around. I give up waiting on a shower as the line is too long inside and try the outdoor shower. It has no roof, just walls. It was ok. The next morning I tried it again and it was freezing, no hot water!
I skip breakfast and get ready to get in the car. I want to get on the grid early as I still am not feeling great about the track. The laps in Manny's car did not give me much to make me feel really attuned to the track as I was learning both the car and the track at the same time. I want all the practice laps I can get in our car. The line up is me, Youngest, Coach and then RacerGuy bringing up the finish for the day. FabGuy is gridded about ten cars behind us and he is under team orders to take it easy to start the race.
We get out and start doing pace laps. Soon enough it's green and the race is on. A few laps in Fabguy blasts by me. So much for taking it easy. Going into turn 2 I see a car off track. I mean he's not a little off the racing surface, he's 150 feet off the corner and just about in the tree line. I wonder what happened there. I am starting to get the hang of the track and pick up some speed. Then I mess up early on and miss the line completely going into turn 9 from 8 and run off the track. I fire the car back up and quickly exit and head to the penalty box.
"what happened?'
"I missed the line and ran out of asphalt and talent all about the same time"
The judge kind of laughs, "keep it on the track" and sends me back out. Youngest has made it to penalty and looks the car over from my adventure in the dirt and grass and gives the go ahead. If you are going to mess up do it right at the entrance to pit road, it really cuts down your time off track!
I run clean the rest of the stint. I tiptoe around the corner I went off but run hard the rest of the track without pushing so hard I get off again. Then Youngest, then Coach. We are having one of the best days we have ever had at the track. Besides my adventure off track no one else has messed up. Our stops are clean and quick. Our times top to bottom are very similar and consistent. Something strange is happening. We are in the top 15 overall and since we managed to get put in B class we are doing very well. Only 50 cars at Hallett this weekend, the smallest Lemons field we have ever competed against.
Fabguy pulls off to go to the gas pumps. We are fueling on pit road but they are going to just fuel at the pumps this race. They aren't planning on winning anything so why go to all the trouble of getting all your gear on and doing hot pit stops? Fabguy comes off a little hot and the officials come over to tell them they were over the ten mph paddock limit. Manyy drives the car up to the penalty and Fabguy comes up and they are told they are good to go. Later Manny gets off the track and goes to penalty. They start in on him not serving the penalty for going too fast in the pits. "we served that penalty" The judge goes off "do you really want to argue about this" Later when they realize the team was right and the previous judge had not marked it off the offenders list before going on break. In a first the judge apologizes to them.
With about two hours left in the day their Miata is towed off. The engine is super hot and will not crank. All signs look bad. Later it cools off and will crank, but cranks with ease, signs of a engine that has lost all compression. Their weekend is done and Fabguy heads out to get a headstart on getting to work early Monday. The rest of us will pull an all nighter after the race Sunday.
I start doing the math and realize it's going to be very tight. We make our calcuations based on a normal 7 hour race day. Today is a 7.5 hour day which is a bit longer than normal when racing Lemons. I figured out the stints and got it wrong. We realize our mistake and run Coach a bit longer before we put in RacerGuy. It's going to come right down to the limit of our fuel mileage. We start planning dinner and cleaning up the paddock with about ten minutes to go when all the sudden we realize the car is not out there. We run to the pumps and find Racerguy there. He ran out and limped the car to the pumps but could not get all the way there. By the time we get the car pushed around to get fuel the race is over for the day. I feel like a total idiot, I could have ran another five minutes easily in the car in the morning and not had this problem.
But the good news is that somehow even after I went off the track and and then we ran out of gas was that we were still very good on the day. We had enough of a lead on the car behind us in Class B that we still had a 7 lap lead even after running out of gas. Even better our paddock mates in the Chrysler are putting a shellacking on Class C as well. Their Magnum wagon is running a Richard Petty scheme, they all have uniforms and the requisite trademark Petty cowboy hat and STP logos, only this time it means "Slow Through Paddock" signs and all. They actually shouted this out when doing the morning driving meeting when they were going over the rules. "STP, Slow through Paddock!" every time the officials discussed that rule in the drivers meeting.
We put everything away, rain is moving in. We are in shock about how well everything is going. Surely we will find a way to loose this race tomorrow. Will other cars be faster in the rain? Will we shoot ourselves in the foot and have poor driving and get multiple black flags? Will something break on the car which has been running great all day long? And who the heck is this Coach guy? All that and more when we wrap up this in the next part of this story. Stay tuned!

2024.05.21 19:42 WingedGeek Rear diff

My mechanic was in doing some work on a fuel line (30 years old, finally developed a leak) and noticed my rear axle was seeping. (Never anything on the ground.) When he got in to change the gasket he reports my rear diff is "metal soup." (I trust this guy FWIW.)
ETA: Pictures: https://imgur.com/a/llaFtNB
It's a one owner stock 1995 4.0L 5 speed, and the rear diff was rebuilt (?) once before in November 2000, at ~70,000 miles (it's got ~150,000 on it now), by a Jeep dealer: https://imgur.com/a/gi0017l
I remember thinking at the time, after the fact, for less money, I could have just had a Dana 44 swapped in (I don't know if that's accurate or not, but that was my thinking at the time).
It's an occasional daily driver (I bike to work as often as I can) that sees light off road use. At some point in the foreseeable future I'll also be the second owner of a TJ Rubicon, so I'm not sure how much I want to tie up in this YJ, as sentimental as it is (I got it when I was 18 - it's 11 years older than I was when I bought it - and I don't intend on ever getting rid of it).
What would you do with a soupy rear diff? Replace with the same (Dana 35 IIRC)? Upgrade for about the same money? (Where would you source parts / assemblies? Convenience is more important than rock bottom lowest cost; I'd love to point my mechanic at a site or order everything myself and have it be delivered to him...)

2024.05.21 17:38 Soft2thehands Build info.

Please ignore if it’s a dumb question. Im pretty ignorant to LS builds as I’m coming from the diesel/ heavy truck world. What would be a reasonable price for a middle of the road build. Looking to swap into a k5 blazer for a guys daughter as her first vehicle. She’s paying for everything so it needs to be conservatively priced but fun. Anyone got ideas?

I’ve seen this model fews years ago .. I see it I like it but I not buy it because it’s hard to find one in my country and was more expensive than .. I was looking for something little cheaper as a first g-shock and I bought gwm5610 .. that was in pandemic period .. it was serving me well as a delivery guy (delivering wash machines, fridges , gas cooker ) wich I supposed to bring to peoples home even they live on 7th floor . It survives at diesel , benzin , white spirits , oil paint . Later I made a trade with some citizen titanium .. I regret it .. I felt like I betrayed myself … I bought another g-shocks … last year I tried to replace him with dw5600 … but in my hearth was not working … after trying , mudmaster , mudman v1 , v2 , rangeman , more Casio’s … few weeks I bought this gw6900 from some guy who bought two at good price from USA .. i swap the strap and I’m so happy … I feel better .. little bit have something there deep in my hearth but it’s fine .. it’s same module I think button more easy to press , more accessible light button .

2024.05.21 04:48 Opposite-Plenty3479 Replacing Radiator on 04 Avalanche

Hi all. My 04 Avalanche's radiator dramatically sprung a leak today on the highway. I have done a few radiator swaps in the past (on my Jeep and Dakota), so this swap will be easy for me. I also purchased new upper & lower hoses because why not.
Here is my situation. I bought this truck 3 years ago. 4 years ago, the previous owner had the water pump and thermostat replaced; and the entire cooling system was flushed and the original DexCool was replaced with the universal green stuff. He used a reliable mechanic and the invoice is detailed.
My question is, do you all think it's worth it to do a full block + heater core flush with distilled water with the new radiator and then add in concentrated DexCool? Or should I stick with the green stuff in the off chance I don't get every drop of it out? I've read nightmare scenarios about the two coolants not playing nice and turning into a sludge. I'm having a crisis here deciding what to do. I live in Texas and it gets HOT here so I want to do the right thing for the ole gal. This truck runs like brand new and has 260,000 miles on it. I religiously perform maintenance on my vehicles
Thanks a lot

2024.05.21 02:09 ckwirey Essential Jeep Upgrades

I just recently purchased a 2024 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, 4dr, 3.6l, manual transmission, 4.10 gears. I'm not a new Jeep owner--this is my 4th--but my last Jeep was an '06. Obviously, things have changed since '06.
I have two basic visions with this Jeep:
  1. I want to haul 4 total people, and 4 total motorcycles, to camping spots across the country, in order to camp and hit excellent motorcycle routes.
  2. I want to do some light overlanding.
Those familiar will know I've already hit a snag. For those unfamiliar, the manual transmission is not exactly suitable for towing. Although it's rated for 3500lbs, the real-life driving experience with this transmission is that it cannot maintain highway speeds while going up long grades (even with 4.10 gears, which is crazy to me).
To spell out that last statement, I recently traveled from GA to TN. I only had myself in the car, and 1 backpack. However, going up the hills into TN, the Jeep could not maintain 6th gear. Downshifting into 5th couldn't be maintained, either, and so I was forced to downshift into 4th. That experience forced many nights of investigation, and I now realize this problem is exceedingly common amongst JL manual Jeep owners.
That said, I'm not here to gripe. I'm here to see if my vision can be realized--and so I'm reaching out to the Jeep community here. Given what I have to work with, I'm looking for recommendations for Jeep upgrades, so that it can bear the loads associated with towing and overlanding. Everything below is open to suggestion:
I'd appreciate any help you guys can give. Obviously, if your recommendation is "just get a 392" or "just do a Hemi swap"--while that may be in the distant future, that is definitely not my here-and-now. For right now, I'm looking for practical upgrades so I can turn my manual wrangler into a capable towing and overlanding rig. Thanks!

2024.05.20 22:14 MoosedMilk Dealership Rant.

Dealership Rant.
Figured I'd share a cool photo before I rant.
Jeeps is a 21 with the 3.0 Diesel. It's been in the shop for 3 Months now for the dreaded "Engine will not restart in X Km. See Dealer" Plus a Oil leak.
Well it's been 3 Months now. And they're replacing the entire DEF System. Tank/lines/injectors/pump. They previously replaced the pump and injectors but it turns out there was a hole in the def fill tube rubbed through by the shock mount. Ontop of that, they managed to put the wrong oil in the Vehicle during the leak repair. A unfortunately common issue between the Gen 2 and Gen 3 ecodiesel.
Luckily I had a loaner for the majority of the time. Until.the dealership sold it and needed me to return it. Now in a rental covered by the warranty.
3 Months is a Long time but I'm excited to get the Vehicle back. I'm sure I'll get some compensation from Jeep Customer Care. But I'll need to wait until the Vehicle is fully repaired before that happens.

Travelers have the opportunity to customize their experience by opting for activities like helicopter rides or guided tours, adding extra layers of excitement and exploration to their itinerary. By providing these optional add-ons, the tour ensures that each traveler can tailor their experience to align with their interests and comfort levels, making the journey even more memorable and fulfilling. However, it's essential to note that while the tour package is extensive and inclusive, there may be certain exclusions such as some meals, gratuities for tour guides, or additional tours like the Grand Canyon helicopter flight, which can be arranged as extra activities for those seeking a more panoramic view of the iconic landmark.
The accommodation options provided in the tour package cater to a range of preferences, from rustic camping experiences to luxurious lodge stays. For travelers seeking a closer connection to nature, camping under the starlit skies of Bryce Canyon or Monument Valley offers a unique and immersive experience. On the other hand, those looking for a more upscale retreat can opt for boutique lodges or resorts that provide comfort and convenience after a day of exploration. The diverse range of accommodation choices ensures that each traveler can find their ideal retreat, enhancing the overall journey through the Southwest USA.

Benefits of Opting for a Private Tour

When selecting a private 3-day tour to explore the wonders of Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Monument Valley, and Antelope Canyon, several advantages come with this exclusive experience. One key benefit is the personalized touch that a private tour offers. With a smaller group size, travelers can enjoy a more intimate setting, allowing for a deeper connection with the natural beauty of each destination. Unlike larger group tours, a private tour provides the flexibility to tailor the itinerary to individual preferences, ensuring that participants can spend more time at locations that resonate with them the most. For instance, if a guest is particularly interested in photography, the guide can allocate extra time for capturing the perfect shot at iconic spots like Antelope Canyon with optimal lighting conditions.
Moreover, the luxury and exclusivity of a private tour elevate the overall experience. From premium transportation to handpicked accommodations, private tours often incorporate high-quality services to enhance comfort and convenience throughout the journey. Imagine unwinding after a day of exploration in a lavish lodge overlooking the breathtaking landscapes of Bryce Canyon or savoring a gourmet meal under the starlit sky of Monument Valley. These upscale amenities contribute to a memorable and indulgent travel experience that sets private tours apart from standard group excursions. Travelers can relish in the exclusivity of private access to stunning locations and personalized attention from expert guides, creating unforgettable moments in some of the most awe-inspiring natural settings in the Southwest USA.
Traveling in a small, intimate group on a private tour not only allows for a more personalized experience but also fosters a sense of camaraderie among fellow travelers. Sharing the wonders of the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Monument Valley, and Antelope Canyon with like-minded individuals creates a bond that enhances the overall journey. Whether it's swapping stories around a campfire under the starlit sky or embarking on a challenging hike together, the shared experiences on a private tour forge connections that can last a lifetime. The intimate setting of a private tour cultivates a sense of community and friendship, turning strangers into travel companions and creating memories that will be cherished for years to come.

Insider Tips for Maximizing the Tour Experience

When embarking on the private 3-day tour of Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Monument Valley, and Antelope Canyon, there are several insider tips that can help enhance your overall experience. Firstly, consider visiting the Grand Canyon during the early morning or late afternoon to witness the breathtaking sunrise or sunset, casting a golden glow over the majestic canyon walls. This magical lighting provides optimal conditions for capturing stunning photographs that truly encapsulate the beauty of this natural wonder.
Exploring the hidden gems of Zion National Park can be enhanced by venturing off the beaten path and discovering lesser-known trails and viewpoints. For example, the Canyon Overlook Trail offers a panoramic vista of Zion Canyon that is less crowded than popular hikes like Angel's Landing. By seeking out these quieter spots, travelers can enjoy a more serene and intimate connection with the park's stunning landscapes, away from the hustle and bustle of the main attractions. Engaging with the local guides during these explorations can also provide valuable insights into the park's history and ecology, enriching the overall journey through Zion National Park.
Lastly, when delving into the unique rock formations of Bryce Canyon and the iconic landscapes of Monument Valley, seize the opportunity to interact with the local guides and residents. These encounters can provide valuable insights into the history and traditions of the Navajo Nation, deepening your appreciation for the cultural significance of these sites. By engaging with the local community, you can gain a deeper understanding of the spiritual connection they have to the land, creating a more profound and meaningful travel experience.
By following these insider tips and immersing yourself in the rich tapestry of natural beauty and cultural heritage offered by each destination, you can make the most of your private tour and create lasting memories that will stay with you long after the journey ends.

Focus on Sustainable Tourism and Environmental Conservation

When embarking on the private 3-day tour of Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Monument Valley, and Antelope Canyon, it's essential to appreciate the significance of sustainable tourism and environmental conservation in these pristine natural areas. Sustainable tourism involves minimizing the impact of travel on the environment while supporting local communities and preserving the cultural heritage of the region. By choosing a private tour that emphasizes responsible travel practices, visitors can actively contribute to the long-term protection of these iconic destinations.
One exemplary initiative that showcases sustainable tourism is the use of eco-friendly transportation options during the tour. For instance, opting for hybrid or electric vehicles reduces carbon emissions and minimizes the ecological footprint on the fragile ecosystems of the Southwest USA. Additionally, supporting locally-owned accommodations and businesses along the route promotes economic growth within the community while fostering a deeper connection between travelers and the destination. By adhering to Leave No Trace principles, such as packing out trash and respecting wildlife habitats, visitors can ensure that future generations can also enjoy the natural beauty of the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Monument Valley, and Antelope Canyon.
Another aspect to consider is the conservation of water sources and energy during the tour. Tour operators can implement strategies like using water refill stations to reduce single-use plastic waste and promoting energy-efficient practices in accommodations to lessen the environmental impact. By educating travelers about the importance of conservation efforts in these sensitive environments, the private tour not only provides a memorable experience but also instills a sense of responsibility towards preserving the natural wonders for years to come. Sustainable tourism is not just a concept but a collective responsibility to safeguard the beauty and integrity of these remarkable landscapes for future generations to enjoy.

2024.05.20 19:17 oKyo07 Could I engine swap a Jeep's 4.7L V8 into a smaller car? (ie Honda Civic etc)

Hello all, I have a question that I've had semi answered but I want to be sure although I know there may not be a straight up yes or no since it can vary.
For context, my dad has a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the V8 trim. He stopped using it a few years ago since it broke down on him and he just replaced it with a Murano. Now I'm turning 18 soon and I've started it up and noticed there's some smoke coming from beneath the engine, but it starts up fine and temps are fine when left to settle. Now I like the truck but I'd like to get some hands on experience and I think a lighter car would be more fun with the 235hp the engine makes, so here comes the question. If anyone knows or has experience, how hard would it be to engine swap this into something lighter and is it possible at all?
I know there's also the troubles of ECU flashing, wiring, all that, and I'm willing to tackle it slow since although I do want a running car, I also want to get a lot of hands on experience, and I know an engine swap can be difficult for a beginner but it's something I'd love to tackle.
I appreciate any comments or advice! Thank you!

2024.05.20 18:15 hobbit_wobble91 Misfire help!

Hi all!
I have a bit of a head scratcher. My 2001 XJ Sport (145K miles, 4.0 Auto) has a cylinder 5 misfire I have been chasing for over a year. I've replaced all the basic parts to see if that will help and it does not. I've taken it to 3 shops and no one can figure it out. My buddy who is a mechanic had it for over a month swapping parts from a donor and nothing fixed it.
Fuel injectors, fuel pump, NGK copper plugs, coil pack, IAC, motor and trans mount, and Big 7 cable upgrade did nothing. Compression and leak down test performed twice and showed normal results. The block was replaced about 9 years ago with a TUPY head, 45K on this engine with no other issues.
My buddy swapped out the PCM, CPS and nothing changed.
Shop 1 said coil pack was arching causing the misfire. I warrantied the coil pack, swapped it out, no change. Bought a different brand of coil pack and no change. Plugs are NGK copper gapped correctly. Swapped twice and no change
Shop 2 said I just needed a brand new engine. I believe they couldn't figure it out and gave me the f off diagnosis and quote. Gave absolutely no reasoning for this diagnosis so just a waste of time here
Shop 3 (where the Jeep currently still is after 3 weeks) cannot figure it out. Ruled out engine problems (compression and leak down are totally normal). They are leaning towards electrical, but still no diagnosis for it.
The jeep runs perfectly except for the cylinder 5 misfire. It is only felt at idle (vibration) and 95% of the time, it doesn't even throw a code. No discolored smoke from the tailpipe, no blow by, does not misfire at higher RPMS, does not stall. Even at idle the RPMs are pretty stable, it's really just a vibration felt in the seat and steering wheel (and you can mildly see it in the engine bay).
Has anyone experienced this? I am pulling my hair out, the Jeep runs perfectly except for this misfire!
Also, does anyone in the Chicago area or South Suburbs know of a good mechanic with XJ experience? I feel like most shops aren't gonna want to put in the time to figure it out :-(

2024.05.20 16:09 Kind_Security_9931 Early Look vs Brisbane

Things to maintain :
There were a lot of positives in our game against Port and even more positives in our last 5 or so games bar Sydney. Particularly last game, Phillips looked like he slotted right in, knew what he was doing, didn’t get out muscled and reads the ball very well. I like him a lot and do believe when Sicily and Scrimshaw come back in, he should stay. I liked Phillips in his 1 game more than Serong in the few that his played. Scrimshaw is 100% coming back in so I would say him and Serong just have an easy swap and if Sicily is fit, then he comes in for potentially CJ who doesn’t look quite ready for some AFL and may need some more weeks in the VFL to build his fitness and body.
I believe Seamus Mitchell did an exceptional job on Willie Rioli in the first half. I know Rioli was a crucial part in Ports come back so some of that does fall on Seamus but an experienced player like Rioli was bound to get the best of him. Regardless Mitchell should play on Charlie Cameron this week because it allows Hardwick to swing down between the forward line and backline.
Defence :
Hipwood is confirmed out this week due his suspension and Brisbane won’t be challenging it so we might see Brandon Ryan potentially play or maybe Darcy Fort. Supposedly Brandon Ryan plays, therefore I think Frost takes Daniher, Phillips takes Ryan. This allows Scrimshaw, Sicily and Weddle to be free and intercept which just levels up our game so much.
Midfield :
Our midfield looked much better against a dominant Port midfield. Our biggest problem prior to the game was probably clearance work, particularly centre clearances and probably for the first 65% of the game, we smashed Port but then ended up drawing even with 11 each. However with Will Day being able to play a full game at 100% now, we look a lot better. I think Mackenzie has been so promising the last few games and deserves a few more CBA’s. Nash and Worpel have been decent, but not quite as good as we would like them to be. Their clearance work has been very good but the involvement around the ground has not been great. Newcombe is slowly picking up form but can’t quite get a consistent 4 quarters. D’Ambrosio looks exceptional, I think he is a great wingman, one of our best kicks on the team and nothing really needs to be changed there.
Forward Line :
I am not gonna be hopeful but Mitch Lewis could potentially be back this week. I think he comes in for a small forward in Watson which is unfortunate because I don’t think Watson has been bad it’s just I don’t think Dear should be dropped because his potential is through the roof and we should just be getting games into him. 3 tall forwards could really workout for us, because we tend to kick the ball inside 50 with no real targets sometimes, so the addition of Lewis should help that. Chol had a decent game on Sunday so I think he maintains his spot. Hardwick was obviously unreal so he should continue to do what he does. Then we have Moore, Ginnivian and MacDonald as our half/small forwards.
I think this is definitely a winnable game. We tend to beat Brisbane regardless of their form or how good they have been in the recent years. We have the home ground advantage, we nearly have our whole first team back. And if we can maintain that effort in the first half verse Port then this can be a very competitive game.

I just got a used Jeep in December, and we want to swap out the hard top for the soft top, but one of the hinges is locked and we cannot get it to unlock so we can line it up to bolt it on the bracket. Does anyone have a trick to get this thing to unlock?
