2024.05.19 21:01 _luc1us_ Is this a keloid, a hypertrophic scar or just a big bump

Need help identifying bump
I’ve had this piercing north of 6 years now. It has healed up fine for the first 3.5-4 years. One day while messing around with one of my nieces, she tugged on the hoop that I was wearing at the time really hard. It hurt like hell the first 2 weeks and around a month after I noticed a small irritation bump, I didn’t really give too much thought about it since my piercing was already healed up by that point and I thought that it would go away on its own, and I completely forgot about it(lol). About close to a year (mid 2023) after, I’ve noticed that it has grown to approximately this size. I tried leaving it and hoped that it would go away on its own. Fast forward to two weeks ago, the bump was starting to really annoy me and I tried using the Nopull discs on it, which initially making it ever so SLIGHTLY smaller, but after a few days of getting impatient and applying excess pressure, It got all red and irritated (shown in the pictures above). Need help on identifying this ciruclar beast. Thanks in advance piercing

scars tw, nothing graphic
hello! curious if anyone with hEDS has experience with tattooing over scars. i have hEDS and have primarily hypertrophic, slightly raised scars that vary from white to purple/pink. im interested in getting tattoos in the future and i know people w EDS have various experiences w that, but i want to know specifically if it would be possible and still work aesthetically if i got one over my scars. i know this isn’t medical advice, and im planning on talking to my dr, just looking for peer review haha

2024.05.18 05:47 Impossible-Style2286 help! advice needed on hypertrophic scar

help! advice needed on hypertrophic scar
Scraped my chin pretty badly in September 2023. It's been about 8 months now and this is how it currently looks. My dermatologist insists that the hypertrophic scarring will flatten out in another 6 months and will not give me an injection because she claims it will not do anything. I'm not convinced. Any advice? Should I see another dermatologist? Plastic surgeon? I've been religiously using scar gel and scar sheets on it. Any other products I should incorporate? I keep my skincare very simple - cleanser, cream and top off with cicaplast every night, just rinse with water in the morning, cream and sunscreen. Also have been avoiding the sun like the plague. Would love to get this taken care of as the injury itself was the consequence of some very stupid and embarrassing decisions. Everytime I see the scar it's a hit to my self-esteem :(

Hypertrophic Scar - Wait or See Another Professional?
March 2024

May 2024
Scraped my chin pretty bad back in September and have gone to the dermatologist multiple times to have it checked out since. She said an injection probably won't do anything and to come back in six months if it still hasn't flattened and she'll see if the injection will do anything. I'm not really convinced this will flatten on it's own. In addition to the thick horizontal scar the area around it is slightly raised as well (the small vertical scars you see). I've been religiously using silicone gel and have silicone scar tape on it 12+ hours a day. Any advice? Should I go see a plastic surgeon for scar revision or actually wait and see how it heals further. The redness and color seem to be improving but I just don't see much improvement with the raisedness of it all. All pictures taken with flash.

Keloids, resulting from abnormal wound healing triggered by skin trauma or inflammation, are influenced by genetic and environmental factors. They are more prevalent among individuals of African, Asian, and Hispanic descent. Overactive fibroblasts, producing excessive collagen and growth factors, are implicated in their pathogenesis, leading to the characteristic histologic findings of keloidal collagen bundles and numerous fibroblasts. Clinically, keloids manifest as firm, rubbery nodules extending beyond the initial injury site, often accompanied by pain, itching, or burning. The differential diagnosis includes hypertrophic scars, which are smaller and confined to the injury area, and dermatofibroma, characterized by flesh-colored or hyperpigmented papules or nodules. Due to the therapeutic challenges posed by keloids, prevention plays a crucial role. For predisposed individuals, it is recommended to avoid elective procedures, especially ear piercing and tattooing. Minimizing wound tension and employing compression therapy, with 15 to 45 mmHg pressures for over 23 hours daily for at least 6 months, can help reduce keloid formation and growth.

2024.05.16 23:59 calypsovincent hypertrophic scarring top surgery

before this I want to say I don’t regret getting top surgery at all I needed it so bad. I had top surgery in november 2020 at the gender confirmation center with dr facque. i had double incision and everything went perfect and my pain was surprisingly minimal. I was so happy and grateful to get it as I would bind 24/7 and my dysphoria was horrific. my reveal went great and it looked so good but as soon as I started scarring over the scars were unbelievably thick and raised. (i’m not going to post a picture because i’m afraid of terfs) the doctor confirmed I had hypertrophic scarring ‘beyond the normal limits’ :( now it’s almost 4 years later and a part of my left scar is so stretched and dark it looks like a third nipple. the scars haven’t faded at all and have only gotten a little flatter. they’re so dark and red it makes me so uncomfortable because I can’t wear a white tank top, which was always my dream before surgery, without the scars showing through, go swimming, or go to the beach with no shirt. I feel like I was a much better candidate for keyhole as my chest was very small. I was supposedly on the verge between keyhole and double incision but I went with double incision because I wanted everything to be very flat and even. my nipples feel so strange and weird and I can’t even scratch my ribs because the scars are so thick and block so much of my chest. i’m not blaming the gender confirmation center as they are awesome. my body just scarred really bad. i want to get a revision but i’m afraid it will look worse. Ive seen people get revisions for way less. I don’t know what to do

2024.05.16 10:56 inaxplic Why do only my SH scars turn hypertrophic/keloid and no other injury I’ve ever had? (Anyone else with the same experience?)

I’m not actually sure if anyone will be able to answer this. But I was just thinking about this and it made me curious if there is an explanation, or if anyone else has a similar experience. Every other injury I’ve ever had that has left a scar has been, if anything, a hypotrophic scar. Sunken/“cigarette paper” type scars. But every scar I’ve had from cutting becomes hypertrophic (or maybe keloid even? Maybe kind of borderline between hypertrophic and keloid, if that’s a thing?) Once they’re fully healed and the scab falls off, they’ll be flat or slightly sunken at first, and then over the next 3-6 months they’ll become very raised and thick and rubbery and itchy and then they stay raised and pink for maybe 2-3 years minimum, 4-5 years average, 6+ years at the longest. (So far, anyway.) After that, they finally will have turned flat and pale and then actually have more of the “cigarette paper scar” look to them that any other scar I have gets right away. (I’m always surprised when I see people say that scars can be expected to go from raised pink to flat white in a matter of only months, since in my experience it has never been less than multiple years!)
I haven’t had a lot of really bad accidental injuries, so maybe it’s just a difference in severity of injury? But even cooking accidents that have involved kitchen implement cuts have resulted in hypotrophic scars right away, never raised or pink at all, even when the severity of the injury looks identical to what I know would leave at least a small raised scar if it had been a SH wound.
Besides turning raised and pink for so long, I don’t have any problems with my wound healing, so I don’t think it’s a problem of bad healing. And it doesn’t seem to be a result of a specific tool, as obviously my tools have changed over the ~15 years I’ve had the habit.
I’ve never had surgery, but this does make me wonder that if/when I ever have surgery in the future, whether I would be likely to end up with hypertrophic scars from it, since it would be an even deeper sharp laceration type injury to my body…?
I’m just curious if there is any known explanation for why it would be the case that my SH scars completely drastically differently from any other type of injury I’ve ever had.

2024.05.16 05:51 Little-Republic7765 Anyone with a history of keloid scarring/scarrying prone successfully had Non-incisional Double Eyelid Surgery with no scarring?

I would really appreciate your stories pelase. I really want the surgery and the plastic surgery I spoke to mentioned it was really rare to get keloids or other deep scarring from the non-incisional double eyelid surgery but I am really cautious because I am super sensitive to scarring. I.e I get keloid or hypertrophic scars on one of my ears from piercings. I also get hypertrophic scars from a fingernail/catch scratches.

2024.05.15 20:26 Wide-Lettuce-8771 Hypertrophic scarring treatment options/ghosted by my surgeon

I had a radical breast reduction back in December of last year. My healing went well and I didn't have any major complications. However, my surgeon expressed concerns about hypertrophic scarring underneath my left breast. He told me to use silicone products and come back in 3 months for local steroid injections.
I've always had issues with scarring so I'm not surprised. It's just unsightly in appearance and is so thick it feels like an underwire. It also has a pitted appearance that scares me, like stuff is going to collect in it and cause skin infections. I think it looks like Freddie Kreuger's skin.
The silicone products don't seem to last and are very expensive. My surgeon's office has also ghosted me. They never scheduled a follow-up and have ignored my phone calls asking to schedule one myself. I feel lost.
My PCP offered to do steroid injections for me, but I'm unsure if it's worth it? Has anyone else struggled with hypertrophic scarring, did anything work for you?

2024.05.15 16:20 NaukarNirala Fell face first trying to bail out of a (wall assisted) handstand

So for some reason or the other, I got the motivation to attempt to learn how to bail out of a handstand at 3 am around 2-3 weeks ago. So I looked several videos of cartwheeling out of it and having never done a cartwheel before, I think it was a bad idea to attempt this. I am incredibly dumb and ended up shifting my entire weight forward and fell face first on the hard marble floor. Good thing I had my glasses on for some reason and it protected me somewhat. Bruised my forehead and nose badly (i do not think it was broken but i never got it diagnosed) and got a horizontally short but vertically wide cut over my lip and I had blood all over my lower face with a minor concussion.
I was already scared of handstands due to falling on my face and the one time I gathered courage I ended up doing exactly that. Now, I admit that I am not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I really want to do it one way or other. The hypertrophic scar above my lip (which I do not think is going away anytime soon) reminds me of my failure every time I think of trying it and more than that, it scares me.
I think I am going to need a spotter or a soft mattress below my face or both. And another thing to note is that I do not remember at all where I was looking before I fell (brain damage? lol probably not).
Any and all advice is appreciated greatly, I am just looking for things people would do if they were in my place. I really do not want to give this excellent workout up.
I think I have just enough strength to do a handstand and maybe a few pushups and if it matters I am 172cm and around 62-65kg.

2024.05.15 03:30 ssgsxx Help! I’m freaking out about my scars (Post ACL & Meniscus Repair week 7)

Hi Everyone!
I had Quad Graft ACL Reconstruction surgery on the 19th of March and currently struggling with the way the scars are healing. I’m afraid Keloids will form as they are pink and red majority of the time and a purple on the edges. I’ve been using Silicone Patches for about 12-18 hours a day and if i’m not using the patches i’m using scar gel moisturizer. They’re thickening up although i’m doing what i can to keep them from bulging any further. Is this looking like a keloid or a hypertrophic scar? Please advise for those that have seen scars appearing like this before :)
Don’t worry i’ll def reach out to a Physician about it as well. Anything helps though thank you!

2024.05.14 02:15 mydogisagoblin Hypertrophic scar on tip of nose

Hi! I am 36F and I have a small hypertrophic scar on the tip of my nose, about the size of a sesame seed. I've had it for a year or two in total at this point. My dermatologist burned it off twice and it keeps coming back. She offered steroid injections as a next step but said that it can cause a concave spot in the skin, which would look equally bad as the scar. The tip of the nose is a major focus point when people look at your face, and this scar is very distracting and obvious, so I want to choose the best option for improving the appearance and getting rid of the scar.
Do you suggest that I see a plastic surgeon at this point? Or are the steroid injections the better option?
Thanks!

2024.05.14 01:09 DetectiveGold7884 Help please!

I had “powder brows” done 3 years ago, and I’ve started the process to get them removed. I had a test patch done 4 days ago and this is what it’s looking like. I’ve been using pure aloe Vera gel and gently icing but it’s really swollen. I’m terrified of hypertrophic scarring. Is this normal???
