2024.06.02 03:28 whymyearhurt Books that invoke a feeling of raw unbridled anguish you can never recover from?

I'm not entirely sure how to describe what I want but you'll know if you've ever experienced it. I want to be incapacitated for at least a week after reading it. Give me a book that will drive my loved ones crazy when I don't stop yapping about it. If it doesn't awaken something in me, I don't want it. Basically I just want to cry. It can have a happy ending but I'd prefer if it didn't. Don't be afraid to suggest a popular book because chances are I probably haven't read it. Most of the time I just reread Rick Riordan books until I get tired of them lol
Some books I've already read that have that general vibe: The Song of Achilles - Madeline Miller Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card Hunger Games Trilogy - Suzanne Collins Bridge To Terabithia - Katherine Paterson Woman 99 - Greer Macallister
Non book examples: I Know The End - Phoebe Bridgers (song) The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived - Taylor Swift (song) The Two Headed Calf - Laura Gilpin (poem) Adventure Time (show) Pretty much the entirety of Bojack Horseman Arcane: League of Legends (show) Life Is Strange (I've only played the first game but I assume the rest are just as tragic) What Remains Of Edith Finch (game)
Other optional details/themes/tropes: Found family Child soldiers/children in scenarios they should not be in Manmade horrors beyond comprehension Based on something that could happen/has happened LGBTQ+ (preferably MLM but I'll take what I can get) The hero or someone close to them was actually the bad guy the whole time There is no real bad guy and no one wins either All of it could've been avoided
Things I hate in a book: Romance as the main topic Graphic sex scenes. One or two is fine but if that's all there is to the book I'm not reading it Whiny MC's who don't learn any lesson or undergo any character development Step-incest/any "dark romance" Female characters that were obviously written by straight men POC characters that were obviously written by someone not of that culture with very little research

2024.06.02 01:22 omegaMKXIII 31 [M4F] Austria/Europe - Looking for my forever lady

Starting off with pictures of me because I've got ghosted too many times right after showing them.
I am looking for a lady between 25 and 35 years old, for a committed monogamous childfree relationship. My goal is to become a true team, supporting each other, caring for each other, nurturing each other and helping each other grow and realise our goals and dreams as much as possible. I'm hoping to find someone that values a relationship as much as I do and takes it seriously. It's not the only thing my life revolves around, but it's also not just something 'nice to have' for me.
I am 186cm tall, slim/fit built, dark brown hair, brown eyes. Both my arms are tattooed (full sleeve), as are my calves and the areas above my ankles. Regarding pictures see below. I am a runner, training multiple times a week. I'm also vegan. My love languages are physical touch and words of affirmation. While I am mostly securely attached, withdrawing from me triggers anxiety and I have made a horrible experience with an avoidant partner in the past, so that is something I fear I cannot deal with again.
I am also an atheist.
I am a very warm, soft and sensitive person, I think I am humorous, I am self reflecting a lot and I can also be really passionate and romantic. Those are traits that also are really important to me in a woman.
I can be quite social, I am a good talker, but also love to listen to really get to know someone on a deeper level. I can enjoy an evening out with friends just as much as the silence of sitting at the shores of the river and watching the sunset in solitude (although I've been craving to watch it together with a partner for a really long time now). I can be out in a pub, at a rave, a metal show or at a football game and have the time of my life, but I cannot do these things every day; I need recharge time (on the sofa, in the woods for a run, a lazy Sunday staying in bed etc.). This should give you an idea; basically, I am a homebody that thoroughly enjoys going out in moderation.
I won't say too much about hobbies; suffice it to say I am into the dark, the obscure, the macabre, the occult, the mysterious, the erotic. It won't surprise you that I had a gothic phase in my youth, bonus points if you did too!
What I'm looking for
Although similar hobbies and interests are a plus, emotional and intimate compatibility are more important to me. I am a very sensitive and emotional person (I do cry easily and by this point I don't think I'll ever be able to change that, sorry), so if you're too, we will definitely understand each other. I need someone who I can open up to (which I do rather quickly, anyway), be myself, bare my soul to and I need these things from you, too. I've had my share of emotionally unavailable women who were afraid of intimacy so I know I can't deal with that again because of the way how those things affect me. I am always emotionally invested with the woman I pursue and in those cases that was to my detriment. But my ability to feel so deep is also something I wouldn't want to change because as of yet, although it's getting harder, I haven't given up on finding someone.
With those emotional needs come two requirements that I found to be vital over the years: First, being able to be silly and cutesy together and to accept each other's inner child and care for it. I am not talking about having to deal with another person's immaturity or inability to perform basic adult skills, rather with the way sadness, hurt, anxiety and being overwhelmed manifests for me (and maybe for you, too?). I need someone who is able to comfort me, to hold me, to allow me to be weak and needy for a while until I've calmed down, and I'm more than ready to offer the same. Your inner child can come out for a while, no problem (: Also in a positive way: Thankfully, today everyone seems to be understanding of the cuteness overload cats (or any animal baby, really) can cause; I need that with a partner. I also still have plushies as comfort animals and ideally, you do too.
Apparently in every relationship, one person is the stronger one. In the past, I have been with women who obviously were stronger than me, but that doesn't mean they always had to be strong, far from it. I certainly need to be able to feel protected, but it's not like I'm a particularly needy partner, like everyone, I have my ups and downs, but I can pull my weight and have been told by past partners that I am very caring and that they felt safe and understood with me, and providing that for my partner is really important for me as well.
Second, intimate compatibility. I am rather insatiable and love to experiment when it comes to the bedroom, so you should, too, in order that we can explore and enjoy together. I found out how fulfilling living out those fantasies can be after years of never being able to try and in a relationship, this kind of fulfillment for both partners is a must for me. I found the term 'filthy best friends and partners' to be a perfect description.
I'm looking for a balance between healthy independence and being emotionally present. A relationship where we 'get' each other; we're both each other's number one and treat each other like royalty. Where a disagreement leads to more intimacy between us as we understand better, not to resentment. Where we're comfortable baring our souls to each other, becoming a safe haven and secure base for each other. I don't like the modern notion that you 'should never feel too safe in a relationship' because that sounds like running from the mafia (and believe me, I love mafia movies); you should always put in effort, yes, but safety is one of the things I always want to experience and provide in a relationship. We shouldn't fear that a disagreement leads straight to breakup. I know ‘self-sufficiency’ is trending right now, but I feel like as partners, we’re partly responsible for each other and not our own but also each other’s happiness. Being dependant and dependable at the same time is important; making each other’s wellbeing a priority. If you’re not able to healthily depend on someone and their support while you’re having a hard time, look elsewhere. If I have to be afraid you’ll run at the first major problem that surfaces, even if it’s a ‘you’-problem, it’s not going to work. I think that all things can and need to be talked about. If you think ignoring someone for days is a form of communication, please look elsewhere.
I am looking for someone real. We all have our problems, I don't want or need a 'perfect' person. You don't have everything figured out or 'all your shit' together. Be imperfect. Admit when you feel sad and angry, lonely, hopeless or even helpless – it's all relatable. Don't hide it. Be quirky, be dorky, be witchy, opinionated, be yourself. Don't pretend.
I'm looking for someone to share romance with. Not great gestures, but small, meaningful ones. Poems for each other, expressing our feelings; cards with heartfelt messages that we put our perfume/cologne on, and a symbol that means something to us only, the print of your lips with lipstick, the way I sign and seal my letters for you.
Just as important to me is agreeing on living a healthy life, staying in shape both for ourselves and for each other, regularly working out and eating healthy. I am drug and disease-free and expect the same of you. I do drink as I love a good beer or glass of wine, rum or whiskey, but I've never really been drinking much and especially during the past year have further reduced it. One vice I have is that I enjoy a couple of cigars a year, but I can definitely accommodate you in this regard.
Another important point is aligned life goals: I value safety more than adventure. I want to build a home together with my partner, a safespace for the both of us, where we always feel loved and protected, a place that we create together, make it cozy together so we just love to get back home there wherever we might have been, a home we decorate together for Halloween (my favourite holiday) or Christmas or Springtime, as we live in tune with the seasons, enjoying nature on a walk or the rain outside, reading in our cozy home. I value stability and harmony.
Appearance-wise, I am into ladies on the smaller side), so I'm looking for someone petite/slim/skinny/healthy-fit. Likewise, I am not really muscular and don't have visible abs; like I said, I'm a runner, so if you're more into the gym-type, I'm not a good fit.
I’d prefer to move from text to voice calls, videochat and then meeting up, all of that rather sooner than later. Not that there’s a need to rush anything, but I’d rather see earlier if we’re compatible or not; as someone who catches feelings fast I need to protect myself.
Caveats

2024.06.01 23:44 ValueOfAMiracle Latvian Coworker Wrote Poem in Latvian in Goodbye Card

Latvian Coworker Wrote Poem in Latvian in Goodbye Card
I recently left my job for a new job across the country. A Latvian co-worker to whom I was close, said she wrote a poem in Latvian on my goodbye card. I don't read/understand Latvian, and her handwriting is in cursive is a little difficult to decipher since I'm not really familiar with the Latvian alphabet. Could someone translate what she said to me? The note is in the picture below:

2024.06.01 22:56 halmcgee Transparent Paper

Watching Ted Forbes on Art of Photography last night and one of the books had a poem on some semitransparent paper overlaid on a photograph. The poem was formatted to fit to the photograph but then when you lifted the page you could see just the photograph. I thought that would really be cool to use with some artwork for Christmas cards or other projects but then it occurred to me I've never seen anything like that to write on. Has anyone seen anything like that and what inks or pens would you have to use?
TIA

2024.06.01 18:35 xXOutlierXx [F4A] Life Bites P.2 [Human/Vampire Listener] [College] [Supernatural]

Hello all. So I got artistically worked up enough to write the next installment in this series. Though this isn't for the contest I mentioned in my previous post. This one is just for me. I hope you enjoy it.
Also - this script is okay for monetization
Speakers: -- Elaina -- Classmates (mutliple voices) -- Lucinda
Synopsis: It's your first day at a magical university, and before you can get started attending classes and making friends, you have to take a special course in "Vampire History and Ethics." That's right, your a "vampire," the only human one in your class-- but what that word means, and what you actually are, are two entirely different things. That is why this class exists, it's meant to teach you the truth about vampires, and make you aware of all the resources the university has prepared for you.
Elaina: Come on, sweety; don't be shy, we're all friends here.
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: Still feeling flustered? Well, how about you start by saying "Hi" to the class, and telling us your name?
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: See, that wasn't so hard! Say "Hi" back, everybody!
Classmates: Hi!
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: Ah, I think I just made it worse. I want to feel bad-- but look at those cheeks! All nice and rosey! Ooh, you are just a delight!
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: Ah-- (sigh) You're right, my dear; I shouldn't keep teasing you like this. I apologize.
[Two heeled footsteps]
Elaina: (Clearing throat) So, since we've all gotten a good look at you now, why don't you tell us all about your family?
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: "What do we want to know?" Well, like I said, since you're a human vampire, you must have incredibly strong ties to Lady Valentina; and this in turn, should make you the product of arcane nobility, since magicians of noble houses did their best to keep the bloodlines "pure." With all of that in mind, I would imagine that you have a lot you could share with us.
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: You still don't understand why you'd be nobility? Really? Okay... Let me put it another way. Those born with abnormally large amounts of magical potential, are what you and I refer to today as "high borns." And in eons past, these same individuals, in an attempt to hold onto their strong connection to the arcane, decided that they, and their children, would only marry other high borns. This in turn, led to the creation of noble magic families, and anceint magus clans, like the Parvus. Do you see where I'm going here?
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: That's right; your human vampire genes means that your predcessors were not only from the Parvus clan, but that they also married back into the Parvus clan-- after several generations, or that they married other high borns with Parvus clan blood in them. Which makes you both an arcane noble, and a vampire noble, now that I think about it (giggle)
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: Um... Sunshine... What's wrong? You look so confused.
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: As far as you know, your families' all "normal?" But, that would be... I mean, the odds are astranomical... Are you sure you're not... Ah-- you know what, I think it's best not to worry about it. Noble are not, I'm sure your family is made up of wonderful people, especially your parents; because after all-- they made you.
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: Aw, there's that blush!
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: Right, right, I promised I wouldn't tease (clearing throat). Since I've already spoken so much today, why don't we open the floor again for questions?
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: Yes, questions about you; precious. That is why I called you up here, after all, so we could learn more about you. And before you can refuse-- who wants to ask the first question?
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: Yes, Miss Mina, go ahead and ask your question!
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: Um, that's more of a vampire question than a personal one, but I'll answer it as much as I can. In short, no; being a vampire doesn't mean you'll get an otherworldly eye color. We know that, genetically, all vampires are doomed to have poor vision; but this predisposition has no bearing when it comes to the color of our eyes. So when it comes to this cutie here, their eyes are abnormally pretty because they just so happened to be born with pretty eyes... (Wistful sigh)... Must be nice. Sweet thing, tell us, did you get those eyes from someone in your family?
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: No? So that eye color is entirely unique to you. You really are one in a million.
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: You're right, sweetpea, I should focus. Um, who else has a question?
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: You, Miss Francesca; go for it!
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: Oh, that's a fair question. I'm sure that many of us are all ninth, or even tenth generation students of Amortis University, seeing as how this school was founded hundreds of years ago, as place for magical beings to gather. So with that said, are your parents alumni of this school, sweetheart?
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: They're... not?
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: You come from a small town, where there is no higher form of education, so out of everyone in your family-- you're the only one who has been to Amortis? Huh... why don't we take one last question?
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: Uhh... yes, you; Mr. Noel!
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: Huh... I don't know how well our speaker will be able to answer that question, since it's less of a question and more of a "show and tell," but... Do you have any "cool" vampire heirlooms in your family, cutie?
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: You think you do? What do you mean?
[Brief Pause] [Jingle jangle of a chain necklace]
Elaina: Oh my! That's... beautiful! May I take a closer look?
[Two heeled steps forward]
Elaina: Incredible. Where did you get this?
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: Your Grandfather gave it to you when you were little? Amazing. It almost looks like a magus family crest, but... I don't recognize it. I mean; Dragons, Flowers, and Swords, are all fairly common when it comes to family crests, but I've never seen them put together like this. A Dragon, standing over an Iris, almost like he's protecting it... and this Iris. Normally, Iris petals are white, but the tips of these petals are pink... Then there's the sword. It's not piercing the dragon through, but rather, standing beind him. And that would suggest, a call to arms...? I've never seen anything so strange.
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: Hm? Oh, sorry-- sweet thing; I bet you've had enough of me breathing your air. (Clears throat) You know, I have a friend who works in the Department of History on campus, and I bet she can tell us where that pendant comes from. She's really good like that when it comes to old relics. So... if you don't mind... could I maybe take a picture of you? It's just to show my friend the pendant, nothing else, I promise.
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: Thank you, dear. Let me just...
[Camera phone snapshot]
Elaina: There. Perfect! And with that, I think we're done for today. Thanks again to our wonderful volunteer. Another round of applause for them, please!
[Brief applause]
Elaina: (Giggling) And now-- Off to the diner!
[Hoots and hollers] [Chairs moving] [Sound of footsteps] [Fade out]
--- Transition to new scene ---
[Night-time ambience] [Owl hooting. Cicadas. Etc.]
[Series of heeled footsteps] [Sound of a creaky door opening] [Sound of door closing] [Night-time ambience ceases]
[Sound of heeled footsteps continue and echo down a hallway, briefly, but then stop]
Elaina: (With echo) Burr... It's always so cold in this building... And why is it always so dark?
[Sounds of hands rubbing together] [Heeled footsteps continue]
Elaina: (Calling out /Still echoing) Lucy...? Are you here...? It's me, Elaina...!
[Brief Pause]
Elaina: (To herself) I swear, if you fail to recognize me, and blast me with ice magic, again; I am going to wrap you up in my webs, and leave you hanging upside down for a wee--
[Fires sudden spring to life]
Elaina: (Shrieks/Gasps)
[Echo effect Ends]
Lucinda: (Chuckling softly)
Elaina: Ugh, Lucinda-- How could you!
Lucinda: My-my-my, what an itsy-bitsy spider; so jittery and jumpy, I nearly mistook it for a flea.
Elaina: Ha-ha-ha, very funny Lu. Now float your magical behind down here so I can strangle you!
Lucinda: (Chuckles)
[Magical effects] [Sound of several heeled footsteps] [Rustling sounds as the two women hug]
Elaina: (Playfully Pouting) You scared me.
Lucinda: I know. That was kind of the point.
[Sound of Elaina smacking Lucinda's arm]
Lucinda: Ow.
Elaina: That's what you get for playing tricks! And speaking of greivances, would it kill you to install some proper lighting in here? I'm half demon spider and I can barely see past my nose.
Lucinda: Meh-- not happening.
Elaina: Why? You're the head of this Department!
Lucinda: Remember how you just complained about how cold it was?
Elaina: Yes?
Lucinda: Well, imagine how much colder it would be with normal lightbulbs, instead of my arcane fire magic.
Elaina: Huh...
Lucinda: Yeah.
Elaina: But... it's still freezing in here.
Lucinda: Because it needs to be. Relics and artifacts don't hold up well in the heat. The excess moisture alone in environments like that, would cause half of the books in this building to fall apart.
Elaina: (Burr)... Okay, you win... cold is good for books... (Burr)... but not for bugs.
Lucinda: I told you to wear a jacket in here.
Elaina: I know. I just keep forgetting to bring one.
Lucinda: Hmm, I guess it can't be helped. You only have two working braincells, after all, and I know that one them is always getting distracted by all the pretty lights and colors.
Elaina: (Chuckling) Remind me why we're friends again?
Lucinda: Because my snark is endearing?
Elaina: Hmm, believe it or not, it actually is.
Lucinda: (Sarcastic) Yeah... I'm actually so endearing, that my best friend rarely comes to visit me.
Elaina: (Guilty hiss) About that... I'm sorry, Lu. You know I love you, it's just, I get so caught up with all of these board meetings and paperwork; and I just got a fresh cloud of vampires for the year. I know that's no excuse, but I need you to know that I--
Lucinda: Elaina; Elaina, It's fine... I promise I'm not mad.
Elaina: You're not...?
Lucinda: No. I have been a bit bored, recently, but that's not on you. That's just the nature of my department.
Elaina: Now that you mention it, I feel like you're the only person I ever see in here.
Lucinda: That's just how it goes. Every artifact, tome, and relic you see-- has already been studied, cataloged, and organized; in alphabetical order. So unless someone gives us a new piece of old junk-- which is rare, or unless someone wants to look at the junk we currently have in stock-- and it's way too early in the year for that, then there really isn't a need for more than one person to be here.
Elaina: That sounds lonely, Lu.
Lucinda: Boring, not lonely. Besides...
[Punch in the arm sound]
Elaina: Ow!
Lucinda: I can't be lonely, not when memories of you gushing over your students still lives in my head, rent free.
Elaina: Aww, Lucy!
[Sound of rustling as Elaina hugs Lucinda]
Lucinda: (Sarcastically) Ah, okay-- that's enough. This is too much physical touch for one day! Help! Someone! I do not consent! I do not consent!
Elaina: (Giggling) Okay, okay, I'll let go.
Lucinda: Thank you.
Elaina: Speaking of my kids, there's something I want you to look at.
[Sounds of rustling as Elaina goes through her purse]
Lucinda: Oh? Did one of your students bring something interesting to show and tell?
[Rustling stops]
Elaina: No! But also-- yes...? I think? Anyways, we didn't have show and tell!
[Rustling continues]
Lucinda: (Sarcastically and teasingly) You sure?
Elaina: (Almost in a singing voice) Stop distracting me!
Lucinda: (Almost in a singing voice) No promises.
Elaina: Just one second... Ah-ha! Found it.
[Rustling stops]
Elaina: Now let me just...
[Sound of buttons on a phone being pressed]
Elaina: Here, look at this!
Lucinda: Let's see... Wow, this one's really cute. They're a little on the young side, but I think you could make it work with the in-laws.
Elaina: Huh? Wha-- No! That's not why I showed you my phone.
Lucinda: It isn't?
Elaina: Ugh... The pendant, Lu! The pendant!
Lucinda: Okay, but; wouldn't it have made more sense to get a closeup shot of the necklace? That should be the only important thing in the picture, after all.
Elaina: Never mind all of that, just look at the screen.
Lucinda: (Chuckling/Jovial) Oh E, you never cha-- (Gasp)
Elaina: Um... Lucy...?
Lucinda: (Serious) You said this was one of your students?
Elaina: Yes...?
Lucinda: (Serious) When was this picture taken?
Elaina: I... I don't...
Lucinda: Elaina! When was this picture taken?
Elaina: Ear-Earlier today... During my afternoon class...
Lucinda: (Steadying breath) Okay, so besides you and me; how many people got a look at that pendant?
Elaina: Well... This student showed off their necklace to the entire class.
Lucinda: You're joking!
Elaina: What? What's the big deal? And why are you acting so weird?
Lucinda: (Sigh) Elaina... this is bad... this is very, very bad.
Elaina: What's bad? My student, their crest, or the fact that people saw it?
Lucinda: All of it! We need to... (Deep breath).... We need to handle this, quietly, before the powers that be start descending upon the campus.
Elaina: I still don't understand what the problem is. Do you recognize this pendant?
Lucinda: In a way, yes. I've never actually seen one these before, but I know a few things about them, thanks to the poem surrounding the Coward's Crest.
Elaina: The Coward's Crest? Is that was this is called?
Lucinda: Yes. And the poem incscibed upon the back apparently tells a story. If I recall, the poem goes something like this... "The child of dragons pines for a lonely flower; and in giving his life, he watched it bloom. Cursed petals, cast yourselves into the tempest; may you forever remain-- scattered. Shadows comes to avenge themselves for the heart of their broken caster. In keeping watch, may my fortunes remain out of sight."
Elaina: ...That's it...?
Lucinda: Yep, that should be all of it.
Elaina: Seriously? That poem tells us nothing!
Lucinda: It tells you nothing.
Elaina: You're telling me you understand it?
Lucinda: More than you do, at least.
Elaina: (Scoffs) Okay... And?
Lucinda: And I think you need to delete that picture from your phone.
Elaina: Wha-- how is that important right now?
Lucinda: I'll explain later. Now delete the picture.
Elaina: Lu, I don't--
Lucinda: Delete it!
Elaina: Okay, okay.
[Sound of buttons on a phone being pressed]
Elaina: There; done. Now what?
Lucinda: Now we need to go pay your "student" a visit.
Elaina: Lu, it's the middle of the night! And my class and I just got back from Joey's.
Lucinda: Joey's?
Elaina: Yeah.
Lucinda: Since when do you have the money to take your entire class to Joey's?
Elaina: Umm....
Luciana: You swipped Durandal's card again, didn't you?
Elaina: No...? Okay, fine-- I did. But I did it for justice!
Lucinda: (In exasperation) Elaina... there are about a thousand different ressons I should scold you right now, and there are a million different ways that I could go about it, but we don't have the time. (Sigh) When and where are you seeing the kid next?
Elaina: Well, today's monday, so... the day after tomorrow?
Lucinda: Too long, make it sooner.
Elaina: Uh-- How am I supposed to "make it sooner?"
Lucinda: Make a house call.
Elaina: A house call? I'm a teacher Lu, not a doctor!
Lucinda: Well if we don't get to this freshman fast enough, they're definitely gonna need one.
Elaina: Is the truth surrounding the pendant really that bad?
Lucinda: If I'm interpreting the poem right, then yes. And if I'm wrong, things are probably even worse. But we don't have the luxury of sitting around and doing nothing anymore. Let's go.
Elaina: Where?
Lucinda: To your place.
Elaina: What? Why?
Lucinda: So you can start pulling files on every single one of your students, and so I can make some coffee to keep us awake while you do it. Now move it.
Elaina: Lu-- Ah! Okay, okay, you don't have to shove!
[Sound of regular footsteps and heeled footsteps begin to sound, and then continue briefly, until they fade out]

2024.06.01 08:10 BunnyHenTa1 Laments about the post-confession chapters

After rewatching the 3 seasons of the anime a few times and absolutely loving it, I've made the decision to read the source material starting with the very first chapter. I have just finished the challenger finale with Taichi losing to Arata in the goofiest way possible and would now like to voice some complaints about the post-season 3 era of the story. If it's okay with you of course.
I have read some discussions and will attempt not to be repetitive with my points.
  1. The first years. With Taichi going on what is stylized to be his villain arc and Chihaya going on a study spree to cope with her feelings, the new first years are given a challenge to become memorable and exciting while all that other incredible and exciting stuff is already going on around them. And boy did they not deliver. There are 4 new characters but for the purposes of the narrative they act like 2 characters: Tamaru and generic first-years (GFY). Sure they all have quirks to be distinguishable but not one of them has a compelling journey or a goal.
The first conflict that GFY face is not vibing with the karuta club and it is solved with the seniors just talking to them, there are no interesting one-on-one interactions here like there were with the construction of the OG club (Chihaya learning to see poems as colourful from Kana for example), it is delivered as a series of short comedic sketches. And that's because they are not individual characters, they are a representation of a group.
And Tamaru's arc was about not requiring the praise of others I think?
To see this point clearly, compare how Tsukuba and best girl Sumire were introduced to how the GFY are. There is an obvious discrepancy in depth.
  1. Karuta matches.
Now, this is something that was a problem with the manga from the beginning. Here is how a match between character A and character B would go: Character A takes a card; the spectators: "OMG A IS GOING TO WIN"; B has a revelation in their inner monologue and take a card; the spectators: "OMG SINCE WHEN IS B SO STRONG MAYBE THEY WILL WIN"; A has a different revelation and take a card; repeat; Now, of course there are matches where the tactics are very interesting (Harada vs Suou), where every take is an emotional rollercoaster (Taichi vs Chihaya) or where the whole thing is just poetic to the bone (Harada vs Arata), but that is not the case with filler tournament matches. They are a massive yawn. I cannot be expected to be excited over a bunch of chapters about the new hokou team most of which I don't care about, the new fujisaki team most of which I don't care about and Arata's team which consists of people I could not care less about.
It's just a bunch of characters I don't know competing in generic matches (though there were some funny moments). And worst of all, I have no investment in who wins. In second year it was Mizusawa's dream to be the strongest in japan, a dream they worked through blood sweat and tears to achieve, so of course I was invested.
Here I was just waiting for more Taichi and Suou content.
  1. Suou and Shinobu
Oh, this one isn't a complaint. The author ansolutely killed it with these two, absolute perfection.
  1. Dirty tricks
This is a segway to the Taichi vs Arata match.
So, Taichi learns from Suou a lot of things: incredible perception, feints, detachment, fun. These are his weapons with which he manages to breeze through the challenger qualifier matches. But in his match against Arata he considers them off limits. Nishida even says something to the effect of "we want Arata to see us, real us, no dirty tricks or anything". Taichi doesn't use feints, doesn't try to mess with Arata starting with the second match and is not detached. Like bro.
Harada has bad hearing and uses different techniques to compensate for it, those are not considered dirty tricks. Arata doesn't have extraordinary hearing and so uses cross sweeps, those are not considered dirty tricks. So why does Mashima feel the need to abandon all of his weapons to play "true" karuta? Makes me mad.
  1. The incredibly goofy Taichi loss.
What I find hillarious about his loss is that during the second game he decides that "winning cannot not matter" and that he will play Harada's karuta. In any other circumstance, heck, in any shounen manga this would be the moment where he strengthens his resolve and gains an unforseen power boost. But instead he just starts panicking and sweating and stuttering and losing by 18 cards. Goofiest stuff I've read in a while.
But on a more serious note, Taichi 100% should have a skill on par with Arata. He was able to completely toy with Sudou, controlling the game completely. He had very close two matches with Arata. I find it rediculously contrived that he just decides to not use his strongest weapons and play bad. That's literally what happens, he decides to play bad and loses. From a narrative standpoint it would also be more interesting if Taichi won, at the very least because he is a much more interesting character and because Arata could use a massive setback like that for character development (which is nonexistant as it stands now).
  1. Nothing exciting happens
Harada's path to challenging Suou is one of my favourite arcs in fiction. Nothing that grandiouse happens after Taichi's confession.
On a more personal note, I am greatly saddened that best girl Sumire doesn't have much to do. She is still only enamoured by Mashima (as we can see from her talk with Mamashima). Like, girl, find a new target or become a rock star or date Nishida idk. Do something. Oh, and Kana's dream of becoming a reader has evaporated too it seems.
--‐------------- Sorry for the long post, it seems I got really frustrated and disappointed.
TL;DR
  1. The new characters are a yawn, have no journey and are not built up like previous first years were.
  2. The national tournament is overshadowed by Taichi's arc and there is no good reason to care about its outcome. The matches are repetitive and formulaic, the characters uninteresting.
  3. Shinobu and Suou's arcs are perfection.
  4. Taichi learns a lot of techniques but dismisses them as dirty tricjs for no apparent reason. Btw, shouldn't feints be considered even harder that normal karuta if anything?
  5. Mashima gets a stereotypical shounen boost (for no good reason btw) just to revert to a blabbering baby in the third match.
  6. Nothing grand happens. OG characters are left behind. Like, imagine Chitose learning karuta and becoming queen before Chihaya (joking).

2024.05.31 04:51 JamesBond_007x ANKI Browser has unexplained behavior for Browser Answers including an "l" (lower case "L")

PLATFORM: Desktop PC and AnkiDroid VERSION: 24.04.1 (ccd9ca1a)⁩
ISSUE: First word in the field ANSWER won't display if it is relatively short, has an "l" (lower case "L") in the word (typically at the end), and uses the English field. Cards display correctly.
Note: I did notice this with earlier versions of Anki, but it bugged me so much that I finally decided to ask about it.
BACKGROUND: I am studying Spanish, so :
I have two fields
I have 2 cards per note assigned to Question and Answer fields :
  1. In the browser only (NOT when displaying either card),
  2. when I show columns Question and Answer,
  3. for the Spanish to English cards only
  4. in the English (Answer) field
  5. If the first word ends in an "l" (lower case "L") it will not display in the browser field.
EXAMPLES EX1: In editor Spanish =occidental English =occidental, western HTML=occidental,
western
In browser Question =occidental Answer =, western (Ankidroid = , western)
EX2: In editor Spanish =occidental English =occidenta, western (no "l") HTML=occidenta,
western
In browser Question =occidental Answer =occidenta, western (Ankidroid =occidenta, western)
EX3: In editor Spanish =occidental English =occidentalxxxx, western ("l" not at end of word) HTML=occidentalxxxx,
western
In browser Question =occidental Answer =xxxx, western (Ankidroid =xxxx, western)
EX4: In editor Spanish =occidental English =occidentaL, western (changed "l" to "L") HTML=occidentaL,
western
In browser Question =occidental Answer =occidentaL, western (Ankidroid =occidentaL, western)
EX5: In editor Spanish =occidental English =^occidental, western (space in front of occidental) HTML=^occidental,
western
In browser Question = occidental Answer =^occidental, western (Ankidroid =^occidental, western)
EX6: In editor Spanish =occidental English =occidental, western HTML=
occidental,
western
(add HTML tags)
In browser Question =occidental Answer =occidental, western (Ankidroid =occidental, western)
WHAT I TRIED:
  1. The examples above
  2. Shut off all add-ons, tried examples again Same results as examples
  3. Compared desk version to Ankidroid (got similar results between the two plus a "pipe" in Ankidroid)
  4. Looked for HTML Tags that might be an "l" Closest were the List tags.
  5. Added the Advanced Browser Add-On. It allowed me to add and display the Spanish and English fields as Spanish and English along with the Question and Answer fields. In all examples where the Answer field (when English) displayed incorrectly, the new English field from the Add-On displayed correctly.
  6. Database and Media check.
  7. Tried other video "drivers" from within ANKI. Software works the best. Some of the others show a black window when a popup occurs EX. Card Info.
REQUEST: I'm looking for an explanation as to why this is occurring only with the "l" and why in just the Answer field (when English). Or some things I can try to help figure it out. (Maybe I have other settings that are affecting the Browser display?)
I also did not want to have to manually add HTML tags to all the affected "l" words, even with Find/Replace.
UPDATE: 30MAY24 - found a case where the Spanish(Answer) =poema displays as Answer=a HTML=poema I created a new note and as I type "poe" in the Spanish field I see "poe" When I type the "m", "poem", the browser field goes blank. (The edit fields shows "poem" When I type the "a", "poema", the browser shows "a".

2024.05.30 19:27 witchwayward Advice Needed! 3-Year Anniversary Scrapbook

Hello!
This is my first post on Reddit. My (25F) and my boyfriends (soon to be 25M) 3rd anniversary is in 1.5 months. I want to hand-make a really nice scrapbook as a gift (the photos/theme would be our past 3 years together) but I have not made a scrapbook since I was very young. I’ve seen a lot of binder-like scrapbook designs on Amazon/Etsy where you put the photos into plastic “slots” and attach them to 2-3 ring binders, but that is NOT what I’m looking for. I’d really like to hand make a scrapbook (ie printing photos out, writing little notes and poems, including ticket stubbs, drawings, etc etc). I have no idea how to go about this. Any and all advice is very much appreciated — how to organize a nice layout, what papecard stock is best to use, how to include photos/other items without making it feel lumpy from the glue/tape, what material I should use for binding/if I should purchase a nice proper binding/where I could purchase proper binding… I just have no idea where to start! Again, any and all advice is appreciated — thank you!

2024.05.30 16:12 Temporary_Ad_7188 How can I change the interval for special cards (FSRS)

Hi, I'm relatively new to using FSRS scheduling (a few days). I mostly use 1 big anki deck where most of my cards are. Part of them are cards that ask me to think in a certain way in certain situations or quotes/prayers/poems that I want to memorize. Now with the new Scheduler, I don't know if I should separate these cards from my deck. And if so how can I make a smaller interval without messing up my FSRS Scheduler? A good explanation is on this site but the guy probably modified the old Scheduler:

2024.05.30 04:16 Basic-Language-8284 In the Prime of My Life – How Game Science Created 'Black Myth: Wukong'(An interview with Game Science 2020-08-21)(AI Translation)

Chapter One
On February 25, 2018, Feng Ji returned to Shenzhen from Shanghai by plane. It was late when he arrived, and as he took a taxi back to his company, he sensed that it was time to make a decision. He called his fellow partners to convene at the office to discuss the path forward. At 2 a.m., Feng Ji wrote three options on the whiteboard in the meeting room: "First, everyone dedicates themselves to creating a standalone action game; second, to develop a popular RPG+SLG mobile game of the time; third, to split into two teams, one for mobile games, with five or six people allocated to prepare for a standalone action game."
They all opted for the third option.
Before leaving for the meeting upon Feng Ji's call, Yang Qi posted on Weibo. Anticipating what Feng Ji would propose, he had been waiting for this call. His post read, "Starting the new year with a grand gamble, ten years in the industry feels like it has all been leading up to this day. Heading out for a midnight meeting, the trees in my entire neighborhood whisper my name..."
On August 16, 2020, sitting in Feng Ji's office, he recounted this story to me. Reflecting for a moment, Feng Ji shared that the meeting at 2 a.m. wasn't really a "turning point."
"It wasn't that dramatic," Feng Ji told me. "We had discussed this for a long time before. And I recently revisited our business plan from 2016 when we were fundraising—you know, you have to write these things for funding. I found that one-third of it was about our intention to create a standalone game—I had even forgotten about it until I checked our chat records...it was indeed the case."
Feng Ji is the founder of Game Science Studio. In 2014, Feng Ji and several colleagues who had collaborated on 'Fighter of the Destiny' left Tencent to establish Game Science.
Game Science's initial projects were trendy at the time. Yang Qi's artistic style was intense and prominent, and Feng Ji knew how to elevate the sophistication of games. Their strategy involved identifying the most popular game genres in the market and combining them with top-tier art, world-building, and storytelling. 'Hundred Generals March' was a card game, 'Art of War: Red Tides' a real-time competitive game, and 'Red Tide Auto Chess'...an auto-chess game. When launched, auto-chess was trending, and the game saw decent online numbers, but then, seemingly overnight, interest in auto-chess waned, and so did their player statistics.
In November 2017, two months after the public beta of 'Art of War: Red Tides', the company partners believed an RPG+SLG project could generate revenue quicker. Thus, they embarked on developing a game of this type, set in the same universe as 'Red Tides', with Feng Ji as lead planner and co-founder Yang Qi as lead artist.
By early 2018, Yang Qi had sketched numerous concept designs for the new game, and Feng Ji had done some preliminary planning. However, Feng Ji felt that the game lacked excitement. "I couldn't take it anymore—you understand what I mean?" Feng Ji explained. "By 'couldn't take it,' I mean that the game we were making wasn't something I particularly wanted to play."
"Although we all believed we'd eventually make a standalone game, we always felt the timing wasn't right, waiting for conditions like having a large sum of money or...just waiting for the right moment," Feng Ji elaborated.
But Yang Qi was not willing to wait any longer. "During a meal, Yang Qi firmly insisted we must proceed," Feng Ji recalled. "He said you can always find a reason not to start, whether it's insufficient funds, manpower, or other inadequacies...If we kept waiting, we might never begin. But he felt if we didn't start soon, the company might lose its appeal to him...So we began seriously discussing it."
That afternoon, in Feng Ji's office, I met Yang Qi. Compared to Feng Ji, he appeared calm and detached, as if accustomed to observing himself and the situation from a third-person perspective. With his mask pulled down to his chin, he smoked cigarettes with fruity flavor capsules. We chatted while smoking.
When I asked Yang Qi why he was so resolute about this, he casually replied, "We've waited for a while, made some other games, because we need to live, after all, survive first."
I posed the question again.
After a moment of thought, he earnestly told me, "Because I don't think I can keep making games like this for many more years...my health won't hold up. Before, I could work around the clock for days without issue, but now, one late night and I need rest. Moreover, a person's creative lifespan is limited; one's golden period of creativity might only span a few years, where you have experience, energy, and a sharp mind...This is your most precious time, and if you don't create something great during this period, you may never get another chance in life..."
After deciding to develop a standalone game, Yang Qi's spirits visibly lifted. At the time, Game Science didn't have a Hangzhou studio; all development staff worked on the second floor of their Shenzhen office. Post-meeting, they cleared a small corner on the first floor for the project, and Yang Qi moved there the next day. Feng Ji, as the founder of Game Science, felt responsible for the "people who came out with him." He also wanted to see his friends engaged in something enthusiastically—even just being enthusiastic was enough.
Chapter Two
Game Science's Hangzhou studio is nestled within a startup industrial park on the outskirts of the city. The park, newly built, boasts a scattering of Hui-style buildings with their characteristic white walls and black tiles. I arrived on a scorching summer afternoon, discovering that due to the lingering pandemic, nearly all the buildings stood empty. A few workers were seen maintaining the roads.
"Initially, we were told there would be things like Starbucks, but because of the pandemic, none of that has opened yet," Feng Ji pointed out to me, gesturing towards vacancies.
Game Science occupies a four-story building here. When I visited around 2 PM, their workday was just beginning. The rooms were dimly lit, with almost everyone slumped lazily in chairs, seemingly on the verge of dozing off. Screens displayed animations or game videos, or interfaces that looked intricate and impressive. All windows lacked curtains; some had cardboard pieces taped up with transparent tape to shield against direct sunlight.
"We haven't had the chance to install curtains yet," Feng Ji mentioned as we climbed upstairs. The second floor served as a common area, housing a few treadmills and exercise bikes in a corner and tables and chairs in the center. The third floor was vacant, save for a 70-inch display on one wall and several wooden swords and shields in another corner. Feng Ji explained they conducted initial inertial motion capture here, which served as a reference for more intricate optical motion capture later. The fourth floor housed Feng Ji's office, though he admitted he seldom stayed upstairs.
The single-player project team moved to Hangzhou in December 2018. Feng Ji appreciated Hangzhou's ambiance, its pace less hectic than Shenzhen's and with more affordable housing, fostering an environment where "everyone can patiently persevere." As a mature company with ample development experience, Game Science sidestepped many pitfalls common in game development. Their core team had collaborated for years, intimately aware of each other's strengths. Familiar with game development processes and backed by successful titles, they maintained a small but highly experienced and cohesive team, deliberately controlling project scope.
Initially, there was consensus on creating a game: a weakly online, strongly combat-focused, melee-centric action title. Debates arose over specific style, but the overarching direction remained. Conversations about the game's style, character traits, and details organically evolved over daily chats during meals and at workstations. Inspired by Feng Ji's fascination with Dark Souls and Yang Qi's preference for Monster Hunter, they agreed on a game featuring "intensely pressuring enemies," "intricately designed levels," and "a mysterious narrative conveyed through fragmented storytelling."
Up until then, Game Science primarily used Cocos and Unity engines, known for their simplicity and low learning curve. For the new project, Unreal Engine emerged as the optimal choice, prompting the entire team to start from scratch learning Unreal. Feng Ji learned camera manipulation, Yang Qi experimented with scene setup and lighting adjustment, and planner "Village Chief" began constructing whiteboxes, determining obstacle placement and setting up barriers.
In May 2018, the preliminary research group assembled their first basic scene to experiment with fundamental combat feel, AI behavior, and combo mechanics. Upon success, they ventured into crafting a demonstrative level showcasing the "final visual effect." They chose Flower Fruit Mountain. A scene in the video depicts the protagonist advancing amidst clouds, accompanied by a dragon, against a backdrop of lush peaks – this is Flower Fruit Mountain.
By late 2018, the Flower Fruit Mountain level was largely formed, implementing basic gameplay functions. The protagonist emerges from a cave to find heavenly soldiers besieging Flower Fruit Mountain, engages in battles, fights a celestial general, and eventually ascends to the clouds to confront armies under the watchful eyes of the Four Heavenly Kings. "Waves of 100,000 heavenly soldiers would come, with the staff transforming into an exaggerated state..." This level was showcased at the year-end meeting. Portions appear in the video's conclusion, with Feng Ji noting plans to revamp the less natural-looking aspects of the heavenly soldiers.
In 2019, the team grew to around 20 members, focusing on delivering "a complete level experience." Deciding it should mirror the final quality players would experience, they named the level Black Wind Mountain. In 'Journey to the West', Black Wind Mountain appears in the chapter "Monk of the Jade Spring Temple Plots for Treasure; Monster of Black Wind Mountain Steals the Robe." It marks the first demon encounter for Sun Wukong on his pilgrimage, which is prominently featured in the video's gameplay demonstration.
Chapter Three
The challenge of creating the Blackwind Mountain level surpassed the expectations of most people, despite prior preparations.
"When you actually start working on it, you realize how difficult it is to create a level that's narrative-driven and emotionally immersive for players," Feng Ji shared with me. "There are so many things you want to include – should monsters engage in dialogue with you? What are they doing when you're not around? Why do you have to fight them? Shouldn't there be some buildup before encountering them?"
All these "desired elements" are intertwined with technology and industrial workflow. In today's era, for a high-investment commercial game, creativity is no longer the sole determinant; realization matters more. In reality, "realization" entails multiple concurrent workflows, each needing to maintain controllable efficiency and quality.
To produce a short in-engine cutscene, the process typically unfolds like this: the narrative designer first scripts the scene, followed by the creation of 2D storyboards. Then, a simple level model is constructed using polygon models without textures (everything appearing white, hence developers call this a 'white box'). Once the white box is ready, dynamic storyboarding takes place within it. If character close-ups are required, motion capture comes into play, starting with a preliminary performance using inertial motion capture devices, tested in-game. If the mood isn't right, it's back to the drawing board. If satisfactory, optical motion capture is used to generate the final product.
Throughout game development, countless production pipelines run concurrently. The larger the game scale and the more advanced the technology, the greater the unpredictability. Any loss of control—be it in quality or efficiency—can spell disaster.
They treated Blackwind Mountain as a minimum viable product. The development team dared not embark on large-scale production until everything was proven feasible. Feng Ji meticulously explained, "Optical motion capture, for instance, involves a studio with 60 cameras and a team of dozens serving you. The daily cost is around 200,000 to 300,000 yuan. If you say, 'Sorry, we weren't prepared today, let's not proceed,' the bill still stands."
Feng Ji demonstrated a playable version of the Blackwind Mountain level, which I also tried out—it wasn't entirely stable, occasionally crashing. He seemed a bit anxious, constantly reminding me that "the handling is far from optimal," "some skills aren't finalized yet," "the stats need adjusting," and "it's not the final quality; many details are missing."
I was already sufficiently astonished. The demo video matched the actual gameplay visuals. I heard a streamer who saw this game's demonstration was thrilled, telling friends, "Triple-A gaming from China has arrived!"
But Feng Ji avoided mentioning the term "triple-A." On one hand, he feared it might invite criticism; on the other, he found the definition imprecise—"What do you mean by triple-A? We know what each 'A' stands for, but this specific definition... is very vague."
"At least one aspect is about spending a lot of money," I said. "Can you disclose the development cost of the game?"
"You can estimate it this way: for every hour of gameplay the player experiences—not including constant stuck points or deaths, but relatively smooth gameplay...," Feng Ji told me, "the development cost is 15 to 20 million yuan per hour."
Chapter Four
Navigating through Zhihu, China's equivalent of Quora, one would periodically encounter a string of questions intertwined with the terms "China," "3A," such as "Why doesn't China have any triple-A games?" or "When will China have its own triple-A titles?" and even "Does China necessarily need triple-A games?" These inquiries are steeped in both hopeful aspirations and a sense of frustration—given our country boasts the world's largest gaming company and a highly lucrative gaming industry, why haven't we produced a triple-A game yet?
For many, myself included, the term "3A" symbolizes an Olympic gold medal, embodying a myriad of aspirations and accomplishments. Anyone with over a year's experience in the gaming industry can easily enumerate the gaps between us and triple-A standards. However, sometimes, one cannot pinpoint precisely what's missing until the endeavor begins.
Watching the 13-minute promotional video attentively reveals that the protagonist, the monkey, remains largely silent, devoid of dialogue or facial expressions, just like all other characters. This led to a perceived lack of character development in the video, issues that Feng Ji attributes to classic "technical problems."
"There's an unconfirmed rumor that Naughty Dog's ratio of artists to technical artists is 1:1," Feng Ji shared. Technical artists can be thought of as individuals who are adept at both technology and artistry, a simplified yet not entirely inaccurate depiction. In essence, technical artists ensure that artistic visions are realized to their fullest potential by providing technical support and enhancing the quality and efficiency of art production. Where tasks require a seamless collaboration between technology and art, a technical artist becomes indispensable.
"One reason we seek technical artists is our determination to excel in storytelling," Feng Ji emphasized. "Motion capture introduces numerous challenges in connection, environmental interactions, and positioning. Remember the final battle with Ling Xuizi, the wolf, in the video?"
"I do."
"Initially, we designed a sequence where the protagonist transforms into a giant ape, leading to a spectacular execution. The wolf would leap down from a roof, only to be caught mid-air by the ape, who would then grip its teeth, pin it to the ground, and pounce. Sounds impressive, right? The problem was, the moment the hand gripped the teeth, clipping occurred. We couldn't stabilize the protagonist's position, causing the teeth to protrude through the fingers."
"This is where technical artists come in," Feng Ji continued. "They ensure proper alignment and can even determine the material properties of each model. Ideally, the wolf's tooth material could simulate piercing flesh... But we couldn't execute it well. After two months, we abandoned the idea and revised the ending. We lost several months due to this design issue, and ultimately, we couldn't resolve it."
Thus, this scene never made it to the final cut. Feng Ji assured me, however, that they're not giving up and will eventually create this climactic moment.
Feng Ji recounted a legend at Naughty Dog, where each artist's desk had a dedicated button. Pressing it summoned a technical artist to address any issues the artist encountered. "Is it a particle emitter problem? An issue with fluid dynamics? Scene interaction? I'm here to fix it on the spot."
Game Science understands the significance of technical artists but lacks a sufficient number. Not just Game Science, but domestically, there's a scarcity of seasoned technical artists, with most "working in giants like Tencent and NetEase."
Nonetheless, they've overcome some obstacles. In the trailer, when the monkey picks up a blade called "Chì Cháo," Feng Ji revealed that it wasn't pre-animated. The monkey could walk up to the blade anywhere, grasp it, and tuck it into his ear. The key was the natural movement of approaching and extracting the sword, a process that took the development team roughly two to three months to refine.
Feng Ji stood up to demonstrate, "You've played 'The Last of Us Part II,' right? After playing that, I felt quite despondent... Did you notice the characters' movements? Say I'm sitting here, and the game prompts me to pick something up—I could be facing it head-on or sideways, yet the action feels incredibly natural?"
I struggled to recall this seemingly insignificant detail in the game. Feng Ji went on, "Initially, we thought it involved capturing more actions, but we discovered the subtlety in character orientation, particularly the feet. If we only captured frontal actions, what about when the object is on the side? Do we rotate? Smooth turning wasn't in our assets, and programming it looked odd. To avoid awkwardness, we could brute force it, creating 32 actions just for picking up this knife, covering every angle. But in the game, you don't just pick up knives; you open doors, wield hammers. Multiplying all actions by 32 would be unfeasible in terms of production costs and resource consumption."
Feng Ji continued, "We researched solutions and studied presentations by major studios at GDC. That's when we discovered Ubisoft's proposed solution, Motion Matching. Its power lies in requiring only a set of base motion capture animations, which Motion Matching then uses, without manual tweaking by animators, to generate a complete, fluid character movement system."
I inquired, "Is this library open-source?"
"There are some open-source versions online, but they're very immature. We refined it to a product level... We reverse-engineered Ubisoft's methods, filling in the blanks where they didn't disclose specifics, like designing the entire action set, accommodating unconventional locomotion animations...," Feng Ji explained, "Yet, comparing to 'Odyssey,' or even more impressively, 'God of War' or 'The Last of Us,' you realize you're still not on par. Their foundational animation libraries and corresponding mathematical algorithms remain a black box to us. It's their moat, their defense."
I asked, "If you manage to develop all these, would it become your moat too?"
"Absolutely," he affirmed, then added, "But they have generations of product iterations under their belt; this isn't something that can be achieved overnight."
Chapter Five
They were constantly faced with choices. For instance, should the game emulate the style of 'Monster Hunter', or that of 'God of War', or adopt the 'Soulsborne' genre? They realized each style entailed different focuses and nuances. Emulating 'God of War' would necessitate a focus on cinematics and execution moves, while 'Monster Hunter' would require tackling the intricacies of large enemy animations. A 'Soulsborne'-style game would demand attention to character progression and dueling combat mechanics—each direction posed its own challenges. The team's primary concern was defining the overall feel they wanted players to associate with their game. They sought to pinpoint how players would describe it.
This quandary persisted until Feng Ji reached a realization: "When we aim to replicate a very specific product... we inherently risk becoming a second-rate game. Even if we pay homage well, it naturally positions us as a lesser alternative in players' minds."
They made a conscious effort to differentiate from the best in the industry. "I acknowledge they may represent the optimal solution for action games today," Feng Ji told me, "but we must distance ourselves from these titles." They avoided direct references, opting instead for innovations like "Bronze Head Iron Arm" and using "Golden Cicada" for stealth.
Level design posed another challenge. Feng Ji was once enamored with the 'box garden' design philosophy of Soulsborne games, characterized by meticulously designed pseudo-sandbox levels prevalent in Japanese games. However, by the end of 2019, the team recognized that 'Wukong' wasn't suited for this approach. They decided that to convey the grand epic feel of 'Journey to the West', multiple levels interconnected by teleportation would better represent a vast, authentic world, allowing for more creative freedom in map design.
Feng Ji still aimed for a "box garden feel" within individual maps, respecting the art team's pursuit of realism. He explained, "In 'Dark Souls', many scenes take place in cathedrals, which lend themselves to looping designs with verticality, but you can't force stairs or elevators into a forest setting. So, it's context-dependent; Black Wind Mountain is flatter, while Leiyin Temple can be more intricate... Yet, I insist on maintaining some openness for exploration within the maps."
Feng Ji was eager to share the game's lore and aesthetic, but I've chosen not to reveal much here. Prior to seeing the final product, any assessment would be premature. This game isn't a replication of 'Journey to the West', nor do they intend to perpetuate the radical, rebellious spirit of 'Asura'.
At times, they're hesitant to mention 'Asura', seemingly wary of player associations. Nonetheless, they do link the two, as evident in the promotional video's closing caption, "After the White Bones, Revisit the Journey."
"Why do you think we said that?" Feng Ji asked me. "'Asura' players have a joke: 'After White Bones, there is no more Journey.' We planned five chapters; Chapter Three, Farewell Lady, referred to Lady White Bones. Our story stopped abruptly there, with later parts reduced to text quests. Thus, players joked, 'After White Bones, no more Journey.'"
On August 20th, when the video was released, Yang Qi posted on Weibo: "This theme has been a burden for over a decade. Many colleagues don't speak of it, but we all know this heartache can't be ignored. It's an honor to Stage display our progress today, and we'll give it our all going forward, hoping not to disappoint again."
I messaged Feng Ji on WeChat, asking, "Can you ask Yang Qi why he used the word 'again'?"
Feng Ji replied, "He probably feels 'Asura' had regrets." He added, "So do I, but without resentment."
"When you say 'resentment', towards whom?" I queried.
"Mainly towards myself," Feng Ji said. "Back then, I wasn't brave enough."
Chapter Six
I shared a portion of my written article with a friend. I told them, "I don't want people to think this endeavor is arduous... as if it's some '80s reportage literature."
"It's alright," they said. "It still feels a bit tough, but not overly so."
"I'll revise it then," I replied. "I'm just afraid people might think they're struggling when, in truth, they're ecstatic."
In conversations with Feng Ji and Yang Qi, I asked what concerned them most after the video went public. Feng Ji worried that the video wouldn't gain the attention it deserved, fading into obscurity. Yang Qi, on the other hand, feared that their team would be poached by numerous companies post-release. As an observer, my greatest concern was the skepticism and attacks from public opinion –doubting the video as CG, animation, or a deception; accusing them of exploiting emotions, making empty promises, and playing up their hardships.
It's not the fault of gamers. Each query can be traced back to several actual cases where they were misled by inexplicable promotions, leading to anger and then cynicism, believing that trust and enthusiasm come with danger. Meanwhile, "sentimentality" has turned into a pejorative due to overuse. There seems to be a pattern: when we talk about people pursuing their ideals, we must emphasize their choices and sacrifices, including some lofty and melancholic keywords, typical moments—like a lone figure walking towards the sunset.
But Feng Ji and Yang Qi didn't exhibit gloom, resentment, conflict, or sacrifice. Feng Ji was radiant when discussing the game. He would start from one point and branch out like a Wikipedia entry, constantly associating and digressing further. This made me repeatedly examine whether my article truly captured their immersive joy. You see, when people engage in what they love, nearly everything appears joyful.
Towards the end of our conversation that day, for some reason—maybe a comment or a particular moment—we veered into an odd direction.
"Yang Qi once told me, if we crawl now, we could reach a mountain of gold and silver—a huge fortune. If crawling guarantees success, I'd kneel right away without needing persuasion. I desperately want to make money. The problem is, which path guarantees such success through this method?"
"I couldn't answer him," Feng Ji told me. "Many people point at a successful product and ask if emulating its strengths will guarantee success. But as you know, many have better execution and resources than us. What sets us apart? In the end, you rely on your intuition—you must first move yourself. Only when your intuition is strong can you more easily touch users. If you're insensitive to something yourself, leaving aside ego, if you're not sensitive, your pace of improvement will lag behind those who are passionate about it. How can you succeed then?"
Yet, even so, success is not guaranteed for them. Game development is a prolonged process, especially for a project of this scale. The promotional video still had issues; they quietly developed for two years, with the team growing from seven to thirty. They anticipate another two years of development, more work, more team members, and countless unknowns ahead.
After the video's release, Feng Ji started feeling anxious. He messaged me on WeChat, worried about being overpraised. "There's no real sense of security yet..." he said. "I'm the type who struggles to feel happy until things actually happen."
I told him he'd get used to it—not just as a hollow wish. In my view, perhaps unknowingly to him, it's already happening. All this praise and astonishment are part of it, the team's deserved reward.
I still choose to believe that good things come when one decides to pursue what they truly love.
Chapter Seven
In the days leading up to the trailer's release, Game Science consistently posted trailer posters on their official Weibo account. One poster each day was accompanied by a few lines of text or a short poem. On August 19th, the day before the trailer dropped, the caption Game Science provided for the poster read: "Once I was so old, now I am in my prime."
These words are derived from "My Back Pages," a song by American folk legend Bob Dylan. In this song, Dylan unhesitantly criticizes and ridicules his past actions and stances – poignantly, he was only 23 at the time. The song is composed of six verses, each beginning with reflections on the past and ending with the line mentioned. The final two verses go like this:
With the stance of a warrior,
I aimed my spear at those full of empty talk,
Uttered my manifestos,
Caring not if I contradicted myself.
My life was guided by a tumultuous vessel,
Where rebellion brewed aboard at every turn.
Once I was so old,
Now I am in my prime.
Indeed, the imaginary threats fueled my fighting spirit,
The sense of moral superiority made me reckless,
I deceived myself constantly,
Fantasizing about what I must protect.
For some reason, back then, I drew a clear line
Between good and evil.
Once I was so old,
Now I am in my prime.
Epilogue
At 7 PM on the 20th, I arrived at a cinema in Hangzhou. Feng Ji had previously informed me that all Game Science employees were to watch a movie together that evening, a team-building exercise and a celebration of a milestone achieved. He had invited me along and also mentioned a surprise he had prepared for his colleagues – before the film began, the cinema would screen the trailer for 'Black Myth: Wukong.'
As the hour drew near, developers from Game Science trickled into the cinema in twos and threes. They appeared no different from ordinary college students or overworked white-collar workers numbed by their jobs. One wouldn't guess they were the creators of this game. Glasses perched on their noses, clad in T-shirts and sandals, their faces devoid of overt emotion, they seized every opportunity to glance at their phones.
I approached one of them, asking, "Are you with Game Science?" He turned to me and confirmed, "Yeah."
Casually, I inquired, "The video you guys put out today did pretty well, right? How are you feeling about it?"
He eyed me suspiciously, pausing for a second before replying stiffly, "Ah... this... I have nothing to say on that..." Then, he walked away slowly but resolutely.
Feng Ji couldn't make it; he was tied up with other matters. After the video's release, his WeChat exploded with messages—congratulatory notes, inquiries, collaboration proposals. The admin staff at Game Science told me that several groups had visited their office that afternoon, including two groups of players. "They said they were nearby, got excited after watching the video, and decided to drop by—we gave them a tour of the office," the admin shared.
Game Science had reserved a small theater. About thirty people sat inside—the very team behind the game. In the morning, they had been stars in the eyes of gamers nationwide, yet now, their faces betrayed little.
But their excitement was palpable. Seated, they fiddled with their phones, surfing the web. Some discussed the video's view count on Bilibili, one voice wondering, "It's already hit 5 million views, do you think it'll reach 8 million tonight?" Another responded, "Are you kidding? Views don’t grow linearly."
Close by, I guessed a pair of planners, chatting while scrolling through their phones. One said to the other, "Some comments suggested making the death screen look better since players will die a lot." They chuckled, and after, the other commented, "We should definitely make it spectacular!" More laughter followed, then one suggested, "Why don't we write, 'Victory and defeat are common in war, hero, please try again!'" The other clapped, exclaiming, "Great! Retro!" They put down their phones, grinning at each other.
The lights dimmed abruptly, and Game Science's logo flashed on screen, causing a brief stir among the audience—only for silence to swiftly descend. The trailer they crafted, which had electrified the entire internet that morning, played out, yet everyone sat upright, the theater utterly quiet.
When the trailer ended, as expected, the cinema remained hushed. A smattering of applause started but quickly died when few joined in. An atmosphere of silence enveloped the room, devoid of cheers, applause, or whistles, none of the excitement one might expect at a movie screening. I guessed it wasn't due to being stunned or numbness, but shyness—the developers weren't accustomed to expressing their emotions. They just sat there until the lights came back on.
The admin entered the theater, informing everyone that the main feature would start in eight minutes.
The developers sighed collectively, and tranquility returned. After a moment, a voice asked, "Can we watch it again?"

2024.05.29 03:47 Different_Horse6239 5 wonderful nights in Paris - with (lots of) pictures

To start - the photo album - https://photos.app.goo.gl/m816j6qm54nRQ5uw8
I'm a little bit late writing this up, some things won't be relevant any more, apologies. This itinerary is for someone who likes to be out doing stuff all day every day, most people will find it way too full on. If you are also like this, though, I'd say it was well-planned, I never felt overly rushed, though I could've maybe done with an extra half hour here and there (this is more a problem with Paris' need to book everything a month in advance with a specific timeslot than my planning). I found the people to be very friendly, and never had any trouble communicating - though my French is passable, most people switched to English quite quickly, and not just customer-facing staff but even people I stopped to ask for directions from.
Wednesday 25th October Finished work slightly early to get the Eurostar at 18:01 from London St Pancras. 2.5 hour train (and lose an hour to time zones). The hotel was near Place de la Republique, so walkable from Gare du Nord (Hotel Mimosa - cheapest hotel available when we booked. No complaints, nice staff, really clean, didn't try the breakfast). Only had time to check into our hotel and have a quick drink nearby (the end of the PSG game was on).
Thursday 26th October Disney! I wasn't sure about it since it was the middle of French school holidays, and there were certainly some long queues, but my friend insisted and I'm glad we did (although only because I went twice as a kid, if you don't have the nostalgia I don't think it's worth it on a busy day - one year I spent Christmas eve/day here with my mam and had Christmas dinner at the Cinderella inn). We went to Gare du Nord early to buy Navigo Decouverte passes (even though the week runs Mon-Sun and we arrived midweek it's still the best option, no faff with the little paper ticket booklets, covers as far as Disney/Versailles, and is pretty cheap), got the metro over and made it for almost gates opening. Got really lucky and managed to book a table for 2 at Bistrot Chez Remy (the Ratatouille themed restaurant) for the evening whilst on the train there (do this on the Disneyland app), even then the restaurant is only about a 6.5/10 but it's amazing compared to your walk-up options, I'd suggest trying to book one of the better ones a few weeks in advance (be aware of prices though!). The main park is exactly as I remember with one or two Star Wars things shoehorned in, the Studios park is completely different though - before it was all "behind-the-scenes" type stuff, now it's "everything we own that isn't Disney" (so half the park is painted Marvel, half of it is painted Pixar). Particularly sad the Armageddon experience is gone, as well as the statue of Mickey holding Walt Disney's hand. Last time I was here, Crush's Coaster had just opened so was 2 hour queues and I never got to ride it, and somehow 17 years later they haven't shortened. Maybe next time? Rides close at 10 but we stayed for the fireworks, was quite late getting back.
Friday 27th October Slightly later start, easy morning finding somewhere for breakfast, didn't have to be at the Louvre until 11:30. We tried the side entrance that I've seen mentioned on here a few times, don't think it works any more though. The queue to get in even for timed tickets is enormous, thought we'd be stuck there for hours but dead on 11:30 it started moving, and we were past security and into the main hall in about 20 minutes. Made a beeline for the Mona Lisa, having read about a lengthy queue we'd discussed just getting a drive-by/glimpse of it rather than waste the day, but actually there were about 50 people in the pen ahead of us (which is about 10 people wide) and we were at the front in maybe 5 minutes? My photo of it is timestamped 12:02. Saw the Winged Victory, didn't see Liberty Leading the People as it was down for restoration, but it should be back by the time you're reading this. The place is huge and I definitely missed loads (forgot to try and find Napoleon's apartment). I do like art but I found lots of this to be a drag - I like colourful/interesting stuff, but find portraits of old generals and paintings of Jesus incredibly tedious after a while. Glad I went, not sure I'll return though. I budgeted 3 hours which was pretty much perfect for me. Next stop Saint-Chapelle - the windows are as beautiful as you imagine. I've seen a lot of people saying it's a waste of time and money - it is very expensive for what it is, it is just the one room, depending on your budget it might not be for you, but if like me you're happy to chuck money at stuff when on holiday it's absolutely worth the time. I think we stopped at a cafe at this point? One of the typical Parisian ones, where you sit facing out onto the street. Afterwards we walked over to see Notre Dame (still closed due to the fire) and then down into the Latin Quarter. We stumbled upon a free street art exhibition just across from the Pantheon which I really enjoyed, then started looking around for an early dinner - which turns out to be quite challenging in Paris, nowhere opens before 7 it seems, but we did find an Italian place nearby. We needed to get to the Stade de France for 9 so the plan was to be south of the city to make sure we get onto the metro before it gets into the centre and fills up - needn't have bothered though, lots of trains, never got too packed, as organised as any other modern stadium, just aim to be at least 30 minutes early and you can't go wrong. Rugby World Cup 3rd place game - England beat Argentina 26-23, looked like it might be a walkover early on but it turned into a really tight game, great warmup for the main event. Second dinner at Au Pied du Cochon, the 24hr restaurant that gets mentioned on here a lot.
Saturday 28th October Started at Musee d'Orsay, 10:30 entry. This museum is much more to my taste, and a manageable size. The impressionist stuff is all up on the 5th floor and is spectacular, I have never before (and will probably never again) go to a gallery where I instantly recognise so many things! This was a particularly incredible experience as they also had a Van Gogh exhibition on at the time (focused on his works at the end of his life, when he was living in France and his work was becoming very sinister - sadly no longer on) and I'd just recently taken my mam to the immersive Van Gogh experience in Edinburgh as part of her 60th. The other exhibition was Louis Janmot's Poem of the Soul (a really long poem and a load of paintings to accompany each segment) which I can't claim to have heard of before, I wish I'd had a bit more time to enjoy it fully but I had other plans so only had time to look at the pictures. Catacombs were booked for 14:30 - interesting experience, I'd say worth doing but not a must. It's good to have something planned other than museums. Afterwards, had time to see Jardin du Luxembourg and Montparnasse cemetery (didn't take any pictures in here, feels wrong somehow, didn't find anyone famous anyhow), before finding dinner in Montparnasse. Then the World Cup final - South Africa v New Zealand, another very tense game! I seem to have a habit for picking rugby finals with early red cards.
Sunday 29th October Trip to Versailles, 12:00 ticket, full access. This is the one place where, even with a timed ticket, you have a long wait to get in. I got in at 12:40, and I was fairly early so near the front of the queue for my timeslot. The palace itself is fine, bit nicer than my house but not worth the trip on its own, the gardens are stunning though, I spent over 2 hours in them, and still pressed on to see the other areas. My favourite was Marie-Antoinette's hamlet, the pictures don't really do it justice but it felt like I was in a fairytale. I headed back to Paris and got to the Eiffel tower just in time to see it twinkle at 7pm (it does so every hour on the hour after dark). Walked over to Trocadero (the best place to view the Eiffel tower), then along to the Arc de Triomphe and down the Champs Elysee. Took the metro up to Montmartre to go into Basilica Sacre-Coeur (free entry, and by this time no queue at all - they ask for no photographs so there's nothing in my album from inside, but there's plenty online). Ate nearby then had tickets for Moulin Rouge at 11.30 - like Saint-Chapelle, it's quite expensive, but a good time if you do decide to go. This was my most tiring day, over 35000 steps.
Monday 30th October Final day in Paris. I'd managed to get a spare ticket for Musee de l'Orangerie on an site called Headout (usually you would have to book this a while in advance, like most things in Paris, I guess someone returned one last minute? Could only get one, don't think my friend particularly wanted one anyway), 12:00 entry. I picked a route to pass a couple of landmarks - Opera Garnier, Madeleine, Obelique du Louxor. Monet's water lillies are, as you'd expect, absolutely gorgeous, and the only reason this museum exists really. There's some good stuff in the permanent collection in the basement though - I think I remember seeing a Picasso down there? I don't remember what the temporary exhibitions were at the time but I remember being unimpressed. Went back to the Eiffel tower to see it in the daylight, and stumbled upon Musee du Quai Branly. I'm not sure exactly how to describe it, it's a collection of objects created by humanity when in a loosely "tribal" period? Which happened at vastly different time periods for each continent. And also there's some samurai stuff, even though Japan had a fairly well developed civilisation by the time they came around. The more you think about it the more it falls apart really, basically it's a museum full of really cool stuff. Had to rush this a little bit to catch the Eurostar (train at 17:00), was also panicking because I couldn't make contact with my friend, who had my luggage.

2024.05.28 14:52 Old_North8419 How difficult are both of these languages for native speakers of "Romance" or other European languages to learn and fully grasp their grammar & writing systems?

To be clear, I'm talking about languages such as Italian, Spanish, French or Portuguese. (I mean Romanian is also one of them.) They all have gender cases including gendered nouns. I do keep hearing that English speakers have an 'easier' time to learn them due to them having an alphabet, plus they are considered "Romance" languages. (I'm not going to talk about that here, as there are many posts mentioning them.)
Instead, I'm discussing on how hard are both Mandarin & Japanese for native French, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese speakers to learn? Since both JP & ZH are completely alien to European languages in terms of their writing system, grammar or syntax, so they have no common ground with the European framework in regards to their orthography or grammar.
Even though Japanese has hiragana / katakana, it does not mean they write every word like that, since they have Kanji. (It helps condense sentence length, also that makes it clearer to tell the difference on what the correct word is, as some sound exactly the same but have different meanings altogether.
The features that each language has:
Mandarin Japanese
Tones (4-5) Pitch accent
Classifiers (for counting) Counting words
Stroke order (differs from Japanese) Stroke order (differs from Mandarin)
Word particles (different from Japanese) Word particles (different from Mandarin)
Polite language (formality) Keigo & Honorifics
Sentence structure: SVO Sentence structure: SOV
Untranslatable nuances Untranslatable nuances
From both ZH & JP: 1 漢字 equates to a SINGLE word in which multiple letters are needed in European languages to spell out. Both Kanji & Hanzi are drawn from visual concepts on how they interpret a word based on semantic meaning. (Characters are fun for caligraphy practice, it's also a work of art.) For reference, take the Kanji & Hanzi:
[The stroke order between both languages are different despite having the same character for some words, since they are both different languages after all.]
The shape of the character is derivative on how its visualized.
Japanese - 訓読み:かわ・音読み:セン
Mandarin - Pinyin: Chuān
For instance, take the kanji & hanzi:「軍」
As you can see, a single kanji & hanzi already equates to 1 word as it is logographic, which will require multiple letters in Romance languages to spell.
Kanji from Japanese has multiple readings for ONE character, for example:「行」
An example of a Kanji, but as indicated their phonologies change depending on how it used within a word, or placed in a sentence.
Kunyomi: Native Japanese Reading of a kanji.
Onyomi: Reading of a kanji derivative of Mandarin phonology.
Nanori: These readings only apply when a kanji is used within a persons name.
That is also another "complex" part of Japanese, as kanji has multiple pronunciations alone. (Yep, this applies to most of the 2,136+ characters having their own assigned phonologies that differ.)
This often gets lost in translation (like all the time!), as ONE character can imply so many definitions depending on the context you associate it with, in a literal or figurative sense. As opposed to European languages, the translation is mainly consistent with what you put it for "common" words but there are some that can also pose multiple meanings.
Japanese & Mandarin Romance (Euro) languages (letter count)
They have a large amount of characters, getting the feeling like it's 'limitless' but they contrast around 2,000 - 10,000+ in their total amount. French (26), Spanish (27), Italian (21) & Portuguese (26) As they are alphabetical, you read each letter as it is.
Both languages have zero concept of gender cases as it's not a thing in Japanese & Mandarin. They have gender cases and gendered nouns (Whether it is FR, ES, IT or PT.)
On the other hand, they both have idioms and proverbs you can create out of 4 characters, conveying a proverb and idiomatic phrase (both in a literal & figurative sense) using only 4 characters:
As mentioned, they only use 4 characters to construct a proverb & idiom.
I mean, can you also do this in European languages: only using 4 short words alone? (To create a proverb that still conveys an idiomatic meaning with only 4 words.)
Both Mandarin and Japanese have radicals (on both hanzi & kanji) which are building blocks of their characters, that radical has a meaning on its own as it's derivative of an existing word, but when associated with another kanji & hanzi. (Hence why some characters look similar to one another.)
The connotation of its meaning can change, but the theme surrounding the vocabulary involving the radical still conveys a message despite it being a different word entirely, even though the radical is present in an unrelated word that does not relate to the meaning of the radical.
As shown, pay close attention to the radical present in these words. (Despite some of them having the same one, they connotate a different word entirely.)
The Kanji in Grey: Unreleated words surrounding the radical present.
The Kanji in Pink: Related words surrounding the radical present.
Be careful not to get these mixed up, you need a good eye to distiguish them apart.
List of words from Mandarin containing the radical 女.
The Hanzi in Pink - Words associated with nouns relating to girls & women.
The Hanzi in Purple - Words associated with a "positive" connotation.
The Hanzi in Maroon - Words associated with womanhood.

Japanese

They have 45 ひらがな & 45 カタカナ but that is only scratching the surface, not forgetting to include over 2,136+ 漢字 with readings such as: 訓読み, 音読み & 名乗り for each character, imagine doing that 2k times, knowing all the phonologies for most or all of them.
The grammar too is alien to all European languages, as what is stated last in a [EU lang] sentence is positioned at the beginning in Japanese. On top of kanji implying more than one definition as it is dependent on context, also the reading can change if its paired with kana or another kanji.
For example, take the sentence「ジュールズさんが家族と家でフランス語を話します」(You can clearly see as indicated by the word positionings: Japanese word order is SOV while the translations below it are complicit with the SVO order as usual in European languages.)
As shown here, the sentence strutcure in Japanese is very different to the counterparts in French, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese. (Indicated in color)
The さん (in red) is a honorific. (More about that later.)
Subject omission is common in Japanese, as they don't always need to include words like (I am, me, we, us, etc.) as opposed to European languages where it's needed, since you are already inferring to the speaker in question, so it is a lot more straight forward. For instance:
From this sentence (私は) is omitted in Japanese. (Translations conveyed in brackets and light text.)
To speakers of Romance languages, can you omit words like "I am" or any pronoun alike and still be understood by the other party? (Can it really work?)
For example, in Portuguese: instead of saying "O meu nome é Francisco" > just put it as "Francisco" [Omitting O meu nome é] (in Japanese that is connotated as フランシスコです - without 私は)
I won't forget 丁寧語、尊敬語、謙遜語 which are all part of 敬語 in Japanese, especially in verbs as to express a level of politeness (in corporate or formal setting) to empathize respect to the other party to not be connotated as rude (you can use the 'normal' variant but that will come off as impolite - in let's say a business meeting or any formal event / setting.), between a "dictionary" form including teineigo, sonkeigo & kensongo. For instance:
As you can see, all 4 variations of 1 verb exist in Japanese, keeping in mind with the level of formality on which variant you'll use. (They all mean 1 verb, but connotate different levels of politeness, empathizing the level of respect or decorum.)
For example, you would not use 言う in an formal setting when talking to people within either a business or special occassion where decorum is required, you would instead use 申し上げる or something amongst the lines of おっしゃる depending on the situation and setting or formality.
Is there anything like this in European languages to this extent? If not, then this will be difficult for you all to fully understand as there's verbs in Japanese that do this based on the level of decorum incuding the setting you are in, the people you are talking to.
The honorific system in Japanese is often "lost in translation" as evident in both manga or anime (what I hate about translation is that they transliterate it instead of coming up with an equivalent), as there are many levels of politeness and formality within their language, for example:
日本語 Roughly equivalent to:
博士 (はかせ) Dr. / PhD
後輩 (こうはい) Junior
先輩 (せんぱい) Senior
先生 (せんせい) Teach / Mr / Mrs
様 (さま) Mr / Mrs (Formal variant, eg. clients, judges)
さん Mr / Mrs (Addressed towards grown ups)
たん (Refers to babies)
ちゃん (Refers to young children - boys / girls)
殿 (どの) (Formal / archanic ver: of you)
君 (くん) (Semi-formal title referring to men)
氏 (し) (Used for family names or important stuff alike)
陛下 (へいか) Your Majesty
殿下 (でんか) Your Highness
閣下 (かっか) Your excelency
坊 (ぼう) (A term for endearment regarding young boys)
被告 (ひこく) (Addresses the accused - legal / court)
容疑者 (ようぎしゃ) (Addresses the suspect - police / legal)
受刑者 (じゅけいしゃ) (Addresses the one convicted - legal / court)
Of course this also gets lost in translation, in European languages as they OFTEN just romanize the term, which is not how you are not meant to translate it. (If there is no actual equivalent in European languages, just omit it instead of transliterating it.)
In regards to Kanji: there are words that bare the same phoneme, but keep in mind of numerous kanji variations that also possess the same phonology, with each having their own separate meanings. For example, take the onyomi reading for カン -
I only listed 100 kanji that are pronounced the same, but there are 286 more with the same sound: カン (By the way, each kanji has their own definition.)
This phoneme (カン) alone comprises 386 漢字 in Japanese, some of the characters have become 'obscure' in their usage, as in you don't even know they existed until you've looked hard enough. (Even native speakers don't know all of them.)
How difficult is this concept for speakers of European languages to remember and fully grasp? (Some of the kanji are used for people's names.)
The most diffcult part a "word" can have various meanings for one phoneme, take for example 「こうか」which comprises of 39 words with this pronunciation, so depending on the sentence you are listening to or reading, you got to infer the correct one based on context. Also, Japanese has 188 word particles in total. (I won't list them all.)
I can only think of 54 word particles that are used in Japanese sentences. (Although there are quite a lot, with specific uses.)
In terms of how counting works in Japanese, it is not like in European languages at all. Japanese has 助数詞, which are counting / measure words used to count the number of things, actions, events, items, and etc. to make it clear on what you are exactly counting.
A list of Japanese 助数詞 - (There's about 350 of them, but I won't list them all.)
There is so many counter words in Japanese, that even native speakers don't even use ALL of them, as their uses are situational or only applicable in some instances.
Counting suffix (within a number / qty.) A rough summary
A counter for [things] in general, as it is also commonly used in Japanese.
Counter for [no. of pieces] or some things, you see this word in relation to let's say: food.
Counts books, pens, pencils, nail clippers, etc. (This one is quite versatile in its usage.)
Equiv. to no. of reams of paper, no. of pics, also counts bath mats, credit cards, clothing, etc.
Used for counting [small / medium] animals (eg. household pets or other small creatures.)
Counter for [no. of livestock] or large animals such as elephants, whales, camels, etc.
Primarily a counting suffix used for documents or books (equiv. to: Olivier read 3 books.)
Counting word in relation to the no. of vehicles (such as trucks or cars) for example.
Counter word for birds (specifically) but can be used to count rabbits too.
Used to refer to no. of storeys or floors within a building. (eg this apartment has 20 floors.)
Refers to the no. of [cans] such as soda cans, tins, paint cans, etc. (When empty, use: 個)
Refers to no. of [books / comics] in a series. (equiv to: Carlos read all 7 harry potter novels.)
切れ Refers to no. of [sliced food] (equiv. to: Maria sliced 4 loaves of bread for her sibilings.)
As a counter, it refers to [times] bitten in food. (equiv. to: Pierre took one bite from a scone.)
Refers to the no. of [cases / incidents] but this counter has versatility in its usage.
For example, the counting word 羽 is present in Japanese (regardless if it is singular or plural), as it is needed to be specific on the indicator within a numerical unit of [something / someone / event / action, etc.] to clarify what you're referring to.
As highlighted, the presence of the counting word is needed. It's not conveyed in the translations displayed below.
Pitch accent is another part of Japanese phonology, as the word can change based on the volume of each phoneme depending on your pronunciation, it connotates a different word altogether affecting the overall meaning, on what you actually want to say. For example, take むし -
Accent 1 is noted as High Low & Accent 2 is noted as Low High. The pitch accent connotates a different word despite them both sounding similar to one another, as in adjusting the volume of one phoneme upon your pronunciation.

Mandarin

7,000 - 80,000+ 漢字 (There are dictionaries that state the existence of around 106,230 漢字 in Mandarin.) However a modern dictionary only features 20,000 hanzi while an educated native speaker memorizes 8,000 hanzi but reading a newspaper only requires knowing 3,000 hanzi.
The sentence structure is different from Japanese (as it is SVO), although their wordings can imply more than one definition, as it is also dependent on how you associate it within a sentence, keep in mind too that they also have tones embedded within their phonology.
For example, take the sentence「醫生根據病人的病情以最好的方式治療他們」(You can clearly see the differences, as indicated by the word positionings - shown in color.)
As shown, the positioning of the words from Mandarin are different despite the word order being SVO, the translations are still different regardless.
Another feature that Mandarin has are separable verbs. (It may sound confusing at first) From this example, take the verb: 見面 (Rencontrer / Incontrare / Conocerte / Conhecer) used here:
As indicated, the hanzi 面 is omitted since 見 already conveys the verb.
Can you also do this in French, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese?
In this example, an extra hanzi (了 - as an particle / indicator: past tense) is added in the middle but the verb 吃飯 (Repas / Mangiare / Comer / Come) is still intact:
As the hanzi 了 is placed inbetween both 吃 and 飯, but the verb overall is still there.
From Mandarin - there are words that sound the "same" to the untrained musical ear, as it is a tonal language, so you need to keep that in mind, for example from pinyin: 'bi' consists of multiple hanzi depending on the tone you use, based on pronuncation.
All of them may sound the \"same\" to the untrained musical ear, but they are completely different words altogether. That is the difficult part of Mandarin for \"Euro\" language speakers as it's not a thing in their languages.
There are phonemes from Mandarin that comprise of a LOT of hanzi (that imply different definitions altogether, based on tones.) from 1 sound alone, such as this example below:
I can only think of 82 hanzi which all are pronounced as \"BI\" (there are perhaps more) but their tones connotate a different word. (Also, pay attention to the radicals.)
Like Japanese, Mandarin has word particles too. For example:
Some word particles present in Mandarin. (Although there are perhaps more.)
Akin to the Japanese counting system, Mandarin has 漢語量詞 which are classifiers used to count the number of things, actions, events, items, and etc. to make it clear on what you are exactly counting, that classifier is tied to a specific category and usage.
As indicated, the classifer 輛 is required to be within the sentence in Mandarin. (As you can see from the translations, an equivalent word for that classifier doesn't exist.)
A list of Mandarin 漢語量詞 - (There's quite a few, but I won't list them all.)
Although these classifers can imply multiple meanings and uses, it's context specific though if you want to know what that classifer is referring to.
Classifier (no. / qty. of something / action) A rough explanation
Refers to no of. [lines / sentences] (equiv. to: Sam wrote on the first 2 lines of his book.)
Refers to no. of [rounds / bullets] (equiv. to: Diego fired 20 rounds from his M16A4.)
Refers to [letters - mail] (equiv. to: Ella opened 4 letters coming from the city council.)
Refers to [long thin] objects, eg. needles. (equiv. to: Jack only found 1 needle in a haystack.)
No. of trees (equiv. to: Alice planted 6 trees around the park not far from Paris.)
No. of vehicles (eg. Giovani spotted 3 cars in front of him during a traffic jam in Rome.)
Refers to [rows / columns] (eg. Adrian had to wait within a queue stetching 3 rows.)
Refers to [poems] (equiv. to: Theo wrote 7 poems within the first month or so.)
No of. [rinses / times washed] (eg. Henry washed his laundry for the third time.)
No of. [periods within a class] (eg. Claire skipped 2 study periods for her English exam.)
No of [students] (eg. Jean knew there were 20 other pupils in his English class.)
Refers to the [no. of blankets / sheets] (eg. James placed 3 bedsheets in the cabinet.)
Refers to [items grouped in rows] (eg. Sally saw 4 chairs untucked in the classroom.)
Refers to [no. of movies / novels] (eg. Chris Pratt starred in 3 films this year.)
Refers to [no. of packages / bundles] (eg. Reese received 3 bundles of bubble wrap.)
In European languages, do you also have counter words or classifers in relation to numerical units when referring to specific nouns? If not, than this concept from both Japanese & Mandarin might be a struggle to wrap your head around. (As there's one for EVERYTHING, quite a lot!)
Hanzi can be flipped to create:
  1. Reversal of verbs & adjectives
  2. Different meanings
  3. Similar meanings
  4. Loosely related definition
  5. Closely related definition
  6. Logical meanings
Japanese: Kanji can their positions swapped, but in doing so changes the meaning completely.
[Apologies for the long post: since there's a LOT of detail to uncover.]
In hindsight:
