2024.05.20 07:30 HazySorm Kinda scared of my martial arts coach.

Sorry I know it's long.
So I (19 F) started doing martial arts almost a year ago. I moved for school and didn't know anyone and needed to get out of my house and there was a dojo only a few minutes away. It seemed like a good idea. I really enjoyed it, I never worked out or anything before and was very overweight so it was also incredibly difficult. I started being happier and actually made some friends there. Now to the point. Being the only female in the BJJ class was another challenge. All of these guys were bigger, stronger, more fit, and more experienced in this fighting style. I knew the coach (36-38 M) offered private lessons that lasted for between thirty minutes to an hour for like $30, so I asked for extra rolls.
If you know even the basics you know BJJ involves a lot of touching and grabbing. I thought his hand placement was weird but I thought I was being dramatic or making something out of nothing so I pushed it to the back of my mind. I didnt pay much attention even though it made me uncomfortable when he grabbed my behind, my upper thighs, my chest, or any other remotely private area. I thought it was normal because I was very new to the sport.
He recently messaged me and had me come to the gym it was a little after regular classes had ended so I thought I forgot something there because it's happened before. When I walked in it was dark, the lights were off, I thought it was weird and had the feeling I should have recorded but I ignored the feeling and didn't which was stupid in hindsight.
I flipped on the gym lights and he was there he asked me to go to the back it's another part that has the striking equipment bags, gloves, ect.. As soon as we got there he flipped the lights back off and my heart spread up and my stomach was in knots. I was panicking, silently of course, because I know this guy is a pro, and could very easily overpower me if he wanted to.
At that point I had pieced things together but I played dumb. He asked if I knew why he called me, I certainly did then, but I said no. He said, "I'm physically attracted to you. I've enjoyed rolling with you when we do it. Let me partake in you." (Yes he used the word "partake") He said this in a very intimidating voice while stepping closer and I immediately began looking for an exit but the only way out was the way I came in. I said, no, and thankfully he took it but he wasn't happy about it. As I tried to leave he stopped me and grabbed my hand and squeezed hard and said, "I hope this doesn't make you uncomfortable coming back here. Have a good night."
I walked to my car and started crying, it was like a wave of releif washed over my body. I know something ten times worse could have easily happened. The next day he put in the gym group chat the he was having a ceremony for his wife, who happens to be his highschool sweetheart, and wants to thank her for everything she's does for the gym. Last week he had the ceremony, gave her flowers, kissed her, and gave a speech about how much he loves and appreciates her and his three daughters. All of this in front of the over twenty people there that day.
I've become more aware of every single movement this man makes. When I went to the striking class the next day, during drills he touched my back, waist, and hair. It made my skin crawl. His wife and children were at the dojo that day, it scares me how bold he is. How is he comfortable doing that when they could easily see him?
I know his wife. I've had several conversations with her. I've helped her with remodeling a studio. I've played with his children. She and his kids adore him. I can't understand why he would throw all of that away. I can't tell his wife because I don't think she'd beleive me and if she did I'd be tearing apart a family. I know and he knows I can't say anything to anyone else because he's a "good Christian man" and always praises and brags on his family and talks about God and Jesus and has known all of these people for years before I came into the picture. To them I'm a newer friend who isn't religious. They'll take his word over mine any day.
He's acting like nothing happened at all. I think he's trying to make me think I'm crazy and to be honest it's working. I've questioned if it actually happened, if anything happened, the only reason I'm sure is because I called my therapist that night damn near having a panic attack. I've thought about switching then change my mind because it's not that bad right? I told my friend that and she knocked me in the head and said I was switching whether I liked it or not and that she would start going with me.
He still keeps messaging me asking me what I'm doing, if I'm coming, if I want private lessons. It scares me because he knows where I work and go to school. He thankfully doesn't know where I live. I just know if he had really wanted to that night he could have easily had his way with me. He still could if I'm not careful. I have a few months until my contract with that gym is up, then I'm going to switch. The next closest one is an hour away, but I guess that's the cost of being a woman....
I'm just mad, and a little sad. I thought this guy was my friend, and now I'm going to lose all of the friends I've made at the dojo so far. I finally found something I enjoy doing with people that i like being around. Now I have to leave and try to get to know new people again. I'm terrible with socializing so this was hard, and I'm going to have to do it all over again.
I just wonder how long he was looking at me like nothing more than a piece of ass. At the same time that thought makes me nauseous. How many times has he done this? Is this the only time? Does he do this to every barely legal aged girl that walks into his gym? Is this why there are only three female members? Does his wife know she married an unfaithful piece of shit? So many questions, and no way to get answers.
I've thought about quitting martial arts all together, wondering if the hour drive every single day is actually worth it when I move gyms. Every time I think about it I feel awful though. I know I can't quite or I'll spiral....I hate this and I'm tired of this...I want to tell my family but I can't. My mother and aunt would cause even more problems for me and I think my great-grandmother would worry herself to death. The only people who know are my four friends outside the gym, my therapist, and now whoever decides this is worth it to read.

2024.05.20 07:30 rdk67 Spring Day 61: Hot Cicada Sunday

Today! Today issued forth these existential moments, when the absence of human activity is the defining feature of the landscape – not because there is a disaster or a change of heart about the human project but because, well, I don’t know, so I grab my backpack, which stands for aspects of the soul that only sprout in alternate realities – and charge into the day to find out. By noon, the heat is like a flickering color in the mind – unseasonably early for this sort of highlight, and then I remember the cicadas are appearing, which might explain the sudden interest by the rest of the universe. Not halfway down the block, I’m startled by the first cicada of the season – near the top of the tallest tree by the building that houses the renowned music program. The cicada makes music all by itself, and it is like a siren made of clicks, a drumstick pulled across bones.
This is just the beginning of the historical emergence, and the location where I live is one of the nationally recognized hot spots. The people, I don’t believe, have evacuated, but they certainly aren’t rubbing their hands over the trembling earth, waiting for bulging eyes and knobby legs to drag a dirt-stained cicada out of the ground, then off to a place to molt. The molting process is brimming with the sort of metaphor we associate with heaven – something below ground for its whole remembered life, save for a brief time after it hatches, falls out of a tree and into the grass, crawls down into the soil to find a tasty dandelion root to suck on. That original body, on the brightest day of the year, goes searching for a hard vertical surface to cling to, like the side of the tree it was feeding on, then escapes out of its body through the hind end of its own skull.
The heat seems to have its own sense of choice in evidence. While I’m standing there, listening for more clicks, the heat generates a crackling sensation across my shoulders, like patches of my skin are sparkling below my shirt. The clouds – more of those cumulonimbus dreams-come-true – are simultaneously isles and aisles – two bulging eyes – both work, so whichever, either one a somewhat brawny pronunciation, like the words have to walk with a slight bow about the legs, because of the pronounced thigh muscles. Just as I turn to walk away from the lone cicada at the top of the school of music’s tallest tree, the clicking begins again. I stop and turn back to the tree – it stops. I turn to walk, and the clicking sounds again. Maybe the cicada brood will be so large, the movie we call reality has given them final cut, at least for the next few months, so I carry on.
That cicada was a female – they make that clicking sound by rubbing their wings together, and I picture the males all hearing the clicking as a variation of – could some big strong male crawl on over and open this jar for me? The male call is the more familiar whooping siren, which is made with a spasmodic diaphragm on their abdomens – Jerry Lee Lewis at his most raucous – though I believe he did play piano with his feet, so there are dissimilarities, too. The big winners will be the birds and fish, which are looking forward to extra animal protein wherever they look for the next couple of months, second nesting seasons all but in the bag. At the height of his fame, Jerry Lee famously wedded his 13-year-old cousin. Myra Williams was her name, and she said later, after the divorce, she was always the adult in the relationship. They stayed married for 13 years.
Scientists speculate that cicada broods follow such irregular cycles – 7 years, 13 years, 17 years – because they are prime numbers and therefore difficult for predators to sync to over time in the performance of their own boom and bust cycles. I like this theory, though I wonder why the rest of the animal kingdom hasn’t likewise worked the numbers – like cicadas launched themselves into a probabilistic deep-space orbit inside the mind of nature, and never looked back. I picture Neil Armstrong on the ladder of the lunar module, freezing in place, mission command busy on the radio but no reply from Neil until, all wet and new, he bursts forth through the back of his space helmet, as naked as the day he was born, gets busy inflating his wing casings, as mission control cheers, and the scientists all light cigarettes to relieve the stress, maybe hand out cigars.
The heat is a measure of energy in the system – to the extent it also accounts for human absence, we stay huddled inside on hot days like today due to chronic overabundance – nature is giving us too much – which is also true for many allergies and fevers – but with the overabundance of energy, you can find relief through the judicious application of even more energy, which option I used to always forego on general principle – I want to feel the reality of days overabundant as surely as days where the molecules are all optimally excited. These days, I’m in charge of a mid-sized HVAC operation, and thus, feel part of my body living inside a factory of probability that stretches around the world. We humans, on days like today, take it as a given that temperature-controlled climates are part of the deal, that molecules should be in optimal states of excitement.
Which, with self-similarity across scale in mind, might suggest nature treat our excitability with similar regard. Oh to live the life of temperate climes, where fairness and passion are concerned! I’m on my way to the library to borrow a book about love and rage, written by a Buddhist, who examines the roll of anger in transformation. I have no truck with my fellow human sufferers – literally no anger at all – but with human systems? Disembodied intelligences? Those aspects of the hyperform that privilege torment and indifference? When it climbs to a high enough part of the tree to be heard, I can indeed hear my anger. What’s that? A false reality precipitates false authority? Yet knowing this, hyperforms readily believe wealth confers merit. The exaggerated accumulation of capital is an existential disease assuaged with the delusion of personal success.
A block from the library, I come upon two boys playing in a pile of sand beside a garden. The one boy seems to be trying to burrow inside it, and the other is battering the sand with the flat side of a child-sized metal shovel. He has the wrong shovel for the job, a fact I choose to keep to myself, especially since the one really is trying to thwack the tall pile just as hard as he can. The sort of thing kids do in a spirit of curiosity – what happens to the world when the force of one’s anger is applied to a giant pile of sand? Perhaps the urge to use force for no reason is the human behavior we end up with when ambient energy gets so overabundant. This is what life seems to be – the planet’s novel approach to dissipating heat. We are much more than that, of course, and fortunately, the kids have plenty of time and energy to prove it. Their parents tell them to stop.
When a cicada molts, the effect is more than just a body crawling out of a body – for instance, in the moments before this happens, the cicada is visibly squirming inside its former self, which is permanently clinging to the side of a tree, and all the while, it is feeling the pronounced effect of gravity for the first time in its life, not to mention terrestrial life in the trees, where the sap flows freely and sunshine dances on those giant globular eyes for the first time. Emerging cicadas first do a backbend, then hang upside down by their hind ends, letting the legs, wings and abdomen inflate and adjust to the atmospheric pressure, which pressure gracefully draws the body back to an upright posture. They stay that way, letting their wings inflate, flatten out, stiffen. Veins in the wings were veins, were flesh, before the flesh became the will to fly, a means of saying hello.
Nearer the library, I catch sight of someone squatting in the subsurface terrace of the Unitarian-Universalist peace church – I spot a bedroll and backpack, a forty-ounce can of something cold to drink on such a sweltering day. The guy is leaning against the brick wall, staring into space, and I picture him being the pile of sand from the block before – the one repeatedly hit over the head with the flat side of a shovel. At the library, they’re resetting the furniture after a musical performance. I don’t really know who it was – I just see my favorite librarian thanking someone with a violin case, the sort of hardened case they used to carry machine guns around in, and for a moment I hear the rat-a-tat-tat that stands for the sound of anger overcoming us – but then it becomes that highest cicada, back at the top of her tree, rubbing her wings, building railroads.
The heat on the walk home – neighborhoods still evacuated – is like a drunken horse I’m forced to ride. I can feel my body swaying from side to side a little more than usual, so I try to imagine some other time – for instance, when our bodies will be able to take the heat on a day like today and do something with it – cranial stimulation or micromachines to repair the body or even just a way for the body to stay cool without installing an HVAC system. A crow stops me cold when I hear it imitating the sound of a cicada – it doesn’t have the tone exactly right, but it’s doing the clicks, and I know this is true of crows – they acquire new elements of language from what they hear, and the crows must be hearing female cicadas calling out to the others. What a witness! I call up to the crow – or maybe it’s just got a cicada in its beak. In instant reply, the crow shrieks.

My (27f) boyfriend (28m) and I have been together for nearly 5 years and have a 8 month old daughter. Shortly before she was born, my boyfriend got his haircut and mentioned he wasn’t going to cut his hair until our daughter got her first haircut. She is now 8 months and has 1 inch of fuzziness atop her head… first haircut nowhere in sight.
My boyfriend has pretty good style, but has some interesting quirky things he does occasionally in terms of style. I don’t always like his style choices, but generally keep quiet (unless it’s a fedora, sorry fedora lovers).
To get to the point, I was NOT feeling excited thinking about him with long, luscious hair. I mentioned that my mom didn’t cut my hair til I cut it myself at 4 because it grew in curly and didn’t need to be cut, and asked if he would wait that long. At another point I mentioned the long hair (probably saying something hinting as disapproval) he got emotional asking if I wouldn’t find him attractive with long hair.
Now he’s started to braid it every once in a while, which is fine, do what you want. But then he takes the braids out and has crazy hair, then leaves it like that for days. It literally looks like a clown wig. He also started getting dandruff, so it’s like a dandruff-filled clown wig. I think it also has to do with the length, which is approaching lord-farquad length.
I try to say things to hint about hairstyles that don’t look this terrible, but I don’t want to hurt his feelings. He is doing stuff for the dandruff, but it doesn’t seem to work. TBH, I do find myself less attracted to him since the hair shape and style are regularly so visually unappealing.
Would I be an asshole for suggesting he not wear it in that style? Or for suggesting a way he could trim it to look more flattering? Am I an asshole for not finding him as attractive with this hair?

So my husband and I have tuns of issues we are trying to work through, but this might be one of the most annoying. We can’t agree on how to decorate our house, he’s extremely controlling about it, yet I am the one doing all the cleaning and a stay at home mom, so I am always home. I can’t even have furniture other than those ugly plastic drawers! I like pretty things and am really easy going, he ONLY likes religious or spiritual/ psychedelic things. I have past trauma from religion so I would prefer not to wake up to Jesus staring at me, he knew that when we first started dating, but he picks things to obsess over and the past 2 years it’s been religion. I’m willing to compromise in almost every way, but he isn’t. Our walls are all bare with an occasional picture of the family or stupid religious art. It makes me soooo upset and unmotivated. No flowers, no purple, absolutely no butterflies. He won’t even pick up after himself yet I have no say. I am so embarrassed when family or friends come over, it looks like I have no style at all. He won’t let me have access to money even to just buy a few things we need for the house. We don’t have proper towels, dishes, cleaning up products, I feel like I have no control over anything and It’s so depressing, my whole life I dreamed about decorating my house. He doesn’t care though.

So I have 3 boys in all & the youngest 2 are biracial & they have BEAUTIFUL curly hair. My 2 year old absolutely HATES getting his hair done or even someone atleast running their hands through it, he will scream. However, I don’t have any issues with it I remember very well on how it feels to get your hair done as a child so it takes some getting used to. Well, my sister & mother thinks otherwise. EVERYTIME I see them, they’re always saying how I NEED to cut their hair constantly sending me kids haircut styles shit like that. My sister is the most outspoken, judgmental, opinionated woman I’ve ever met & no exaggeration, EVERYTIME she sees my children the FIRST thing that comes out of her mouth is I need to cut it. Today, we were at a bbq at my moms house & I walked in, set the babies down on the couch and the first thing she says after looking at my 2 year old is “ugh why is everybody growing their boys hair out” mind you, my sons hair is freshly / neatly braided so it’s not like it was a mess all over the place. I avoid conflict at my mom’s house out of respect for her, so I just kept my comments to myself and ignored her. As the day goes on blah blah blah, dinner time comes and my son is exhausted after being in church all morning & hasn’t had a nap so he’s crying and I’m trying to figure out why & I hear her & her husband conversation in the living room saying “ yeah we can leave after this I’m not trying to listen to that” so I told them I’ll do it for them. I packed up mine & my son’s dinner, and left instantly. I’m so tired of just being “used to it”. I’m the black sheep of the family so it’s pretty normal to get shit on or talked about or judged. Idk what to do in this situation. OH & she had the nerve to send me a tik tok after I got home of a child’s haircut! I want to respond and go tf off but I’m trying to keep it adult 🙄 ok rant over thanks for listening to my Ted talk 😂😂😂

After visiting San Francisco for a friend's wedding for a weekend, my partner and I found ourselves staying in Japantown at Kabuki Hotel. Reason why I'm writing this review is because coming from out of town, we felt heavily cat-fished by this hotel and the reviews we read felt inaccurate to what we experienced. Hope folks coming from out of town to please triple check what they're getting at Hotel Kabuki.
-- How we found Kabuki --
After reading many recommendations online, including reddit that Kabuki hotel is highly recommended and that Japantown is a great area to stay. The pictures showed brightly lit rooms with modern contemporary style. We decided to book a queen sized bed room through Chase.
-- Check-In--
When we first checked-in, the lobby gave a great first impression. An updated bar, clean couches and overall, a chic open concept lounge where everyone was enjoying themselves. The host was welcoming, but unfortunately gave us the wrong room number. NBD.
-- Immediately, the bad --
On our way to the rooms, the hallways were a stark contrast to the lobby. Lights were dimmed with exposed lightbulbs. Paint job, carpet and elevator was dated and worn. It felt I was back in 2000s Hong Kong community apartments. Upon entering the room, we were surprised by two things: the size and the emptiness of it. About 40% of the room was empty space, decorated with a single chair + desk combo. Lamps were provided as the sole source of light. We had to request another chair to be brought up (clearly one brought from the lobby) or else we'd have to sit on the ground.
Our room was located in the second building on the 3rd floor, which on paper, seems like a decent height. But in reality, it's right next to the streets where I felt closer to the homies each night. You can infer from the latter that sound proofing is almost non-existent in the room. We had to request earplugs to make due each night.
-- The Good --
The room was really clean despite the whole room being borderline dingy. The bathroom and shower were 2x the size than it needed to be. Water pressure was good. Hair dryer and basic toiletries were provided.
-- Ending Notes --
Check-out was quick but they inform you about additional destination fees that are only briefly mentioned during booking. These are NOT included in the price of the hotel so PLEASE beware. We ended up getting charged an extra $120 for 3 nights.
Kabuki is a standard 3 star hotel with nothing much to write home about. The pictures are definetly heavily filtered and videos online are always filmed on bright days. This is in our opinion NOT a 4 star hotel. It provides all your necessities and gets the job done. I would NOT recommend out of town folks to stay here unless you really like Japantown (which as of 05/16, the pagoda is under construction until 2026).

Gonna finish the comm peice and make a bunch of heads after bc omg my boy oscar didnt ask to be born and destroyed for nothing- also this is my first face/head in this style since I normally stick to simple kawaii - unfortunately he has no forehead and i had no idea what to do for the hair so hes bald with a beret

I tend to think of cow poop interms of female cows rather than bulls, picturing lovely wet poop sloppily running out her anus and dribbling across her pussy.
The feed lot near me appears to be males only and yet the fragrance that comes from here is heavenly. So I imagine bull shit must be equal to that of female cow poop. Right? I Don't know, I wonder.
I'm hoping that one of these days ill drive by as a bull sprays poop outside thier fence. The layout of the feed is such that there are two corner fence lines where some cows do lay right up against the fence and if one was lucky they might just poop right outside the fence. Prolonged tucking requires proper hygiene to avoid a yeast infection. It also requires a regular shave down there to avoid chaffing.
The first few times you tuck using this method there can be some initial discomfort or even pain. Do not push yourself too hard. You may want to ease into the full tuck by attempting this method but stop before following all steps. This can be similar to a little stretching before a physical activity. You will need to assess your level of pain, it should not be extreme.
At times you may want to tuck and experience difficulty because there is too much blood in the spongy tissue of your Clitty or you may not have the proper garments yet to contain a proper tuck. In these cases you can follow this tucking method and simply sit down at the edge of your bed or a chair to reduce the size of your swollen Clitty or just to hold your tuck in place
2-2 Hiding Those Berries!
You may need to crouch or lay on your side for best results. Begin by placing your dominant hand behind your back and between the legs.
Grasp the very bottom of your Coin Purse and give it a little tension by pulling gently downwards.
Maintain that light tension on the Coin Purse and bring it back towards your Bussy.
Your Berries should have risen and now be close to the base of your Clitty.
Using your non-dominant hand and spread your fingers in order to be able to manipulate both of your berries. (Live Long and Prosper hand sign From Star Trek)
Gently encourage your Berries upwards on either side of your Clitty. This is where discomfort or pain may occur.
*For novices. You may wish to focus on one Berry at a time if there is difficulty or pain. Just make a small circular motion on the underside of the Berry/Berries to encourage them upwards. There are small openings to the lower abdomen where Berries drop from in infancy. Those openings are usually smaller than your adult Berries, until they are gently stretched a little.
For those who are going to take HRT, an anti-androgen will be taken until such time as the berries cease to function. At that point they will likely become smaller, softer, and less sensitive. Tucking becomes much easier but reproductive functions will be greatly affect
Keeping your berries in the original position will increase their temperature. This will not have any feminizing effects on your body but will likely decrease your sperm production and I have no idea if it will affect production of Testosterone.
2-3 Getting The Meat Into Position
Once the Berries “pop” into position use your non-dominant hand to push your Clitty back towards your Bussy and against your Coin Purse. Note, you should still be using your dominant hand to maintain the position and tension on your Coin Purse.
The final step for this tucking method and just before you secure your tuck with appropriate clothing is to hold the tuck together by squeezing your thighs together.

Gaffs
I use many different brands and do not recommend any one over another. I will say that BBlair offers good quality and it’s Trans Owned! Gaff And Go offers gaffs with thinner waist straps. Pictured here is a transwoman who likely has less meat than average or an expert at minimizing There are many shapes and materials for modern gaffs. Stretch Satin is the most securing material and stretches less than other clothing options listed below, but has an optimal design. A stretch satin gaff is a great choice for beginners and experts alike. Some less desirable aspects are the cheaper models often do not have a narrow thong leaving to much material between the butt cheeks, they are generally 25-35 USD, and are less sexy or less like a woman’s panty.
Most of my 14 years tucking have been with Gaff panties.
No-Show Women’s Stretch Brief Panties
I have no brand opinions for these. You can just go to any women’s department and are likely to find something that works.
This is the most comfortable and least sexy option for securing a tuck, most suitable for a good night’s sleep. Multiple panties are layered with one or two being put on backwards. You may add a final layer with the panties put on in the intended position. You should experiment with panties one and two sizes smaller than recommended for your waist/hip size.
Your Meat may remain secured best if positioned a little more towards your front which can leave a little bulging with some outfits.

Bikini Bottoms Method
This is great for those with less Meat or who are experienced with gaffs and with minimizing their Clitties.
Prepare your tuck and put a string bikini bottom on as a first layer. It should be located further back than intended so that the bottom of the Coin Purse and head of the Clitty will be contained. It’s okay if a little Meat sticks out over the top.
Put a second string bikini on as intended to be worn. This method may not work for everyone and will take some practice. A tie string bikini might help with it’s customizable tension.
This is the method I use for tanning and achieving porn star tan lines.

I found a small-ish lump/bump on my cat Salem. He is a male, long-haired domestic. He's been neutered, up to date on his vaccines, and maybe a bit overwight. The lump/bump is I'd say is about the size of a dime. It's circular, slightly raised, flesh-colored, and smooth, and it doesn't seem to bother him when I touch/rub it. He's 8 years old and doesn't have any known medical conditions. I'm going to call tomorrow to make an appointment, but I'm kind of freaking out and wanted some advice. I made my first throw away account for this. Yipee (he said with all the excitement of a deflating woopie cushion).
I (M23) currently live with my mom (F64) and dad (M65). I'm attending a local community college and struggling to find a regular job while also pursuing a career as a writer and musician. I love my mom and dad very much, and they love me too. They have been nothing but supportive of me and my aspirations my entire life, and I am so grateful to them for that.
That isn't to say we don't have our issues (i wouldn't be talking about them on this sub if they were perfect, after all) but I think the context here is very important.
So, in exchange for no rent, i have to follow a set of rules. Some of them are pretty reasonable (no illegal drugs in the house, do my fill of chores, keep my room and bathroom clean, etc.), but some could be considered a bit weird (attend church once a week, no sex inside the house). While I'm okay with these rules, there is one i chafe against regularly… i have to maintain my haifacial hair in a very specific way.
So, as my username implies, I have long hair. It goes past my shoulders and rests at my upper back. It's also very thick. My mom likes to say my hair, like hers, wants to grow out, not down. (It really does feel like my hair wants to spite gravity sometimes). It defaults to curly ringlets, but I have options to style it.
It wasn't always like this, though. For a majority of my life, i kept my hair short. When i was 17 i heard about locks for love, the charity where you can donate your hair to create wigs for children undergoing cancer treatment. I was really inspired by this, and wanted to participate. I had to wait a year, until i graduated high school (because of our dress code and because i did a lot of theater stuff that required me to have short hair) to start. For four long years, I grew my hair out and finally, cut it off to send it to charity. It was really fun, we threw a small, silly party to celebrate.
But over the next few months, I began to realize something… i really liked having long hair! I've only now begun to verbalize it, but i felt confident and sexy with long hair. It was the first time I made a style choice on my own without involvement from anyone else and i loved it. So, thinking that this was a harmless form of self-expression, I decided I wanted to grow my hair out again, but this time keep it. And here, is where my troubles began.
Now, during the first time I started growing my hair out, my dad made it no secret he didn't like the long hair look, but went along with it because he knew it was for a good cause. But during the fall of 2021, when i made my intentions clear of mainting the look, he began to complain… a lot. Now, i'm not going to pretend some of these complaints were without merit. In terms of styling and hair care, I had no idea what I was doing, and combined with my big, bushy, unkempt beard, I looked terrible. I looked like a caveman Jerry Garcia. My hair was constantly knotted and greasy looking, i had split ends I refused to cut, and my beard was uneven. It drove dad up the wall.
Then, one morning, my parents forced me to go to a barbershop down the street. I went in, explained the situation, and told him i wanted to keep my long hair, but to get rid of all the stuff they didnt like. To shape it up, style it. The barber looked at me, and said it was too soon (it had been five months since i had sent my hair in) and to come back in a month. Satisfied, i texted my mother the news, got myself some lunch, picked up some groceries and came back home. My parents were waiting for me. I don't think Mom had seen my text. They were disappointed. A day or so later, dad came into my room as i was waking up, still wiping the dust from my eyes and gave me an ultimatum. I was going to cut my hair or he was going to kick me out of the house, and take my car too since his name was on the paperwork.
…To say the following two hours were eventful would be an understatement. In short, after lots of screaming, crying, and swearing, from both sides, we came to the agreement we have today; in exchange for keeping my hair tidy, and my beard trimmed, I could continue to live at my parents house. Whenever dads around, or we're out together, he wants me to have my hair tied back (nevermind that can actually damage the hair in the long term) or wear a headband to keep it out of my face.
While he's done a lot to regain my trust since that day (and I've done the same), i still feel uneasy about the whole thing. My dads explanation is that he's from another time, which is true. He grew up in the sixties and the seventies. If i were to fall through a portal in time, people off the street would probably think i was homeless or a hippie. That's how he thinks i look. And that terrifies him, because he thinks I don't know or understand how the way i portray myself can come off to others. It's also an issue of respect to him. In case it wasn't clear earlier, my dad is a Christian. He was a pastor in the Nazarene church for many years, but he's retired now. To him, growing my hair out like i have, after all the times he's expressed his dislike, is the equivalent of me flipping him off. Some of you may be wondering “How are these sentences related?” Well, if you open your bibles to Exodus 20:12, you will find the fifth commandment, which states “honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” To say my faith is important to my dad is an understatement. The most important thing my to my dad, aside from the safety and health of me and mom, is whether or not i still believe Jesus Christ is my lord and savior. But im getting lost in the weeds, lets get back on track.
The point is, my dad sees this as a very personal insult, and a representation of all his fears that I might fail in life in a way that he can't prevent. That's how he's explained it to me. Im not trying to justify or explain away his behavior, I'm just trying to tell you what he's told me.
From my perspective, while Dad was right that my grooming at the time was terrible, my hair style does not, and should not, matter to him. I'll admit, at that time in my life, i was going through a really rough patch that i do not want to go into here. I had some awful habits back then, and i was clinically depressed. But coming in and saying you're gonna kick me out unless i give you what you want isn't what i would call christlike behavior, much less normal empathetic father figure behavior.
So why am i writing about this now? Because he did it again.
So, my dad has still been complaining since the three and a half years this happened, but I've been getting better and better at cleaning and maintaining my hair. Im not going to pretend I'm a master, but at least I'm not using two for one shampoo anymore and have learned how to consistently make a towel wrap. Today (sunday), dad got home from a business trip. When he got home, we didn't really say much because i was rushing to complete summer school homework due by midnight. We said Hi and I love you, but that was pretty much it. I had been working all day on this, since the moment i got up. I missed church because i was exhausted from staying up late, you guessed it, working. After all this time, i finally do it, and go out to have an actual conversation with my dad. And the first thing he says to me during this conversation? After not seeing me since Thursday? “[Long locks], you really need to do something about my hair. You need to remember our agreement. It's becoming a problem.”
Wow. Thanks for the veiled threat dad, nice to see you too.
I don't know what to do anymore. I feel like i cannot please him. I'm just now getting the hang of this, and its like… he doesn't care. I went to a new barber six weeks ago to cut off my split ends and shape it up. I trim my beard every 4-8 weeks. I shampoo, rinse, condition, rinse, dry, comb with a wide tooth comb, comb with an actual brush and then maybe use a band if dads around, AND ITS STILL NOT ENOUGH. The one day i don't do my hair because i am trying to prioritize the things that matter and he says that.
And the thing that bothers me is that it brings me down all the time. It affects my self-esteem and self-image. And he keeps dangling my ability to live a life over my head unless i give him what he wants, and it makes me wonder where will it end? What will he want me to change next? Will he threaten to take away my clothes? Stuff i bought with the allowance he gives me? This thing that happened today made me realize i am so helplessly dependent on these people and I can't take it anymore. So my thought process is why don't i just save us the trouble of all the shouting, crying and swearing, pack up my bags and leave? Lets save the time and trouble and move on because I don't want to fight.
I'm sorry if this has devolved into an incomprehensible slurry, but I've been trying to write this all down for an hour and i'm so tired. I don't want to give up this piece of myself that I've grown to love. But am I being a big stupid baby about this? Should i just give him what he wants? Or should i take a stand for my own personal boundaries and identity and move out? And if the latter, what should my next steps be?

She’s just so negative I can’t stand it. The little girl minding her business who just got her hair done feeling so confident and here she goes, “her hair is ugly as fuck let me get out the car for a closer look”. The girl yesterday who went to take prom pictures at the park who looked stunning in a bright orange dress and she goes, “that orange is so ugly I hate her dress”. My boyfriends mom who doesn’t have a benz like she does and here she goes, “she’s taking y’all to prom in that thing??” Like she’s any better?? I just wished someone put her in her fucking place. She’s fat and overweight , we went to the store to grab 1 item she comes out with 3 bags of chips and 2 big candy bags and she has the audacity to call people fat like she didn’t get surgery to loose weight and STILL hasn’t lost any?? She constantly tries to be me too. I get nails for prom once and her she goes getting hers done when she never does. I get a hair style?? Here she comes copying it, but will find a way to put me down for it. Constantly buying new Amazon packages but hasn’t bought me any new clothes in years but has the audacity to make fun of the shoes I wear like I have a choice. Yesterday was my prom and we took pictures and of course she had to make it about herself. They came in today and she was itching to find a negative thing to say about them then had the audacity to ask to see the rest. For what? So you can dissect what YOU dislike about them? I can’t stand her and I can’t wait until I get the fuck out of here, she’s just so miserable but walks around like her shit doesn’t stink. She’s a single parent who favors her sons over her only daughter who gets nothing but straight A’s and scholarships while her sons are fucking slobs and she tries to compare herself to me??
