2024.05.20 01:56 Mathdebater404 26M - The second most interesting you’ll meet in the next three minutes (probably)

Hey so I’m a 26 year old dude from the UK staying up past my bedtime looking for a reason not to sleep looking for some people to ask the REAL questions with, like what’s your third favourite type of shark, whats the biggest animal you could throw down with and if you had to be stuck inside a bread, what bread would it be
Here’s some (not so) interesting facts about me:
I’ve competed in a sport called powerlifting at an international level and all I have to show for it is my mum asking me to move furniture and saying “tHeRes YoUR wOrkoUt For ThE dAy”
I’ve graduated university with a maths degree (don’t ask me for help though I’m still not confident)
I play guitar and piano which has been critically acclaimed as “average”
I’ve devoted my whole life to be terrible at gaming
There’s probably even some other stuff, if you can believe that.
Feel free to message me, drop a smoke signal, shine the Batman light, whatever you feel comfortable with

2024.05.19 23:55 watdis_shiz_9510 Looking for quiet/ study cafés

Hi, I’ve actually lived in GZ for most of my life, I just went to the UK for my degree and now I’m back for the summer! I was wondering if anyone knows and quiet/ study cafes, specifically in Tianhe (or nearby districts). I used to frequent one in Popark, but they closed down :( Its a shame, they really had the perfect set up for studying, with like sockets on every table, nice background lofi/instrumental music, rlly good cafe food! Plus everyone who went there respected the vibe and weren’t too loud at all… I’m pretty sure the employees would kick anyone out if they were being too loud ahah. I miss that place, and am looking for something like that so I can study for my disertation for the final year ;-;
TLDR: Looking for study cafe in Tianhe/ GZ :)

2024.05.19 23:23 Interesting_Copy_108 What do I do? How do I get out of this mess?

I'm scrolling through Reddit as usual and suddenly get a message from a friend who updates me that she's an events coordinator at a bookstore now. This throws me into the dreadful spiral. The moment I see someone getting a job or getting promoted, I can't stop bawling. Like literal howling. It's a mix of jealousy and hopeless combined with resentment towards myself. I cannot get a basic job at a bookstore or cafe. It feels like I am the only one who can't get any jobs, despite having 5-6 internships. All art galleries reject me, I have been applying for jobs since 2022 and while I'm not from the UK, my friends are neither and they still have some part time job. I keep on applying and I can't believe I'm so incompetent like literally a stupid ugly loser burden on the planet. All I want to do I crib and cry, I'm probably going to return to my home country next year even though I don't want to. I still want to stay here and get a good job in my field and just feel good for once. I really wish I was intelligent, smart, beautiful and rich. Life would be better. I'm too far behind I'm 25 and seems like I have not achieved anything. I really think giving up is the best solution. So how do I stop being jealous of people who are getting jobs and not me? How do I stop caring altogether and just be resentment free? Please don't tell me to toughen up or to get my shit together, I already feel like the biggest loser on the planet.

2024.05.19 18:59 ArchipelagoMind Lease takeover - own bedroom and bathroom in 2bd/2ba apartment right next to the red line - $1630 per month. Free rent in June.

**Key details**
This is 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom in a shared 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment. Your share of the rent would be $1630 a month + utilities (which are usually around $60 a month including internet). Available for move in anytime between now and start of July. June is also FREE if moving in after the 4th. This is a lease takeover, with the lease lasting until May 4th 2025.
**About the apartment**
Modern apartment with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Your bathroom isn't en-suite but is about 1 yard from your bedroom door. Bedroom is spacious with comfortably enough room for a queen bed and furniture. There's also a built in closet. There is a washedryer in unit, dishwasher and central AC and heating. The apartment also has a balcony overlooking the courtyard.
**About the building**
Wisconsin Place is the best place I've ever lived. Very modern building, with great amenities including: in-building gym with new equipment, a cinema room, a cafe area with Macs, a rooftop pool and a business center with free printing. All are free to use for residents. The 24 hour reception is also super useful for making sure your packages and things are super safe. The building has an attached parking garage which it shares with a Whole Foods and Friendship Heights metro station. That means you are incredibly close to the metro and on humid/rainy days you don't even have to go outside to catch the red line downtown. The building has a 4.8 rating on Google, which is amazing for an apartment building, and honestly, I'd say that's accurate.
**The roommate**
Jason, my roommate, is staying on in the other room. He's great and one of the best roommates I've had. In his late 20s, works at a local university while also doing his master's there. You'll also be living with his labradoodle who is incredibly friendly and always down for sofa pets.
**Why I'm leaving**
My fiancee lives in Philly, and my work only requires me be in person Tue-Thu. So I'm only in town for at max two nights a week. The apartment is great, but I was never there. So moving somewhere that's more a *bed and nothing else*

2024.05.19 18:49 Responsible_Macaroni Where do you start measuring from a junction?

Hello everyone! I hope you're all enjoying your weekend :)
I recently applied to build a driveway on the side of my garden, but unfortunately, it was refused. According to the Assistant Planner Officer, the driveway is deemed too close to the junction, with the bike box being counted as part of it.
I'm planning to appeal the decision, but before I do, I wanted to reach out to my fellow Redditors for any insights they might have on the matter.
Below is a little diagram measuring from the beginning of the driveway:
---------- begining of the driveway (0 metres)
[PARKED CAR]
---------- end of the driveway (3 metres)
---------- first stop line (13 metres)
[BIKE BOX]
---------- advanced stop line (18 metres)
---------- edge of the carriageway (21 metres)
This puts us at 10 metres from the end of the driveway to the first stop line, and 15 metres to the advanced stop line. According to the non-statutory Guidance for Householders, an access must not be formed within 15 metres of a junction for road safety reasons:
For road safety reasons, an access must not be formed
• within 15 metres of a junction;
• where visibility would be obstructed; and
• where it would interfere with pedestrian crossings, bus stops, street lighting or existing street furniture.
We believed our application would be approved as we are 15 metres from the ASL, but it was refused on the grounds that the first stop line is part of the junction, thereby reducing the distance to the driveway to only 10 metres.
I've spent countless hours researching this issue, and despite my efforts, I haven't been able to find a definitive answer on what constitutes a junction. The closest reference I found is in the following document:
https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/1796/schedule/22/made
Additionally, I've noticed that all previous planning applications were approved via Fast Track over the past three years, while ours was refused and scrutinized heavily, I believe because it received one objection from our neighbours, who falsely claimed they had rights over our garden (confirmed to be untrue by our Solicitor). Interestingly, the same Assistant Planner Officer approved a driveway immediately after a bus stop last year!
Does anyone have any concrete information on what constitutes a junction? Any help or insights would be greatly appreciated! :)

2024.05.19 16:08 MikealSZA Fears of reaching out again.

Hi there! I'm a 23M from a very small town in the UK.
I'm going to plan this story out at how old I was etc
16-19
I had a group of friends I instantly clicked with when I first moved to this area from central london, we were a unbreakable group for so long. And then we all left school to do our own things - we kept in touch but eventually we all had this big fight and me and my closest friend at the time got thrown to the side as I was defending him and I basically took the bullets aka being called a bitch lmao
20-21
Since then, I decided to go to University late, this meant moving all the way north. My friend still lived in the town but had a really good job, stable income etc. and within the first liek month of me being in university he basically straight up said to my face he doesn't think i'm a great friend (this guy I don't want to even talk to again)
22-23
I'm now remote working from home, quit uni but I have a good new job. I'm back in the small town, but my problem is I genuinely don't have a single friend I can really hang out with. I have some online friends but thats the extent of my social life.
What I'm asking is, do I reach out to my old group of friends again? I know atleast one of them is back in town too working in a small cafe. I'm just scared they'll basically say no and i'll look like a prat. I'm feeling just quite lonely!

2024.05.19 15:12 toleste [QCrit] QUESTIONING, LGBT+ Contemporary Romance, 80k, first attempt

Hey PubTips! Just want to say an upfront thanks to everyone who posts and comments on this subreddit - I've learned so much already!
I'm hoping to submit to a competition in which the prize is feedback from an agent. The competition is being run by Spread The Word and Frog Literary, and you can find it here if you're interested in applying too! (https://www.spreadtheword.org.uk/submissions-call-out-applications-are-open-to-lgbtqia-writers-for-1-2-1-feedback-from-frog-literary-agency/)
In the submission guidelines they ask for a cover letter, and I initially took this as more of a standard cover letter but after feedback from an author friend, they suggested they might be looking for a traditional query. My autistic brain struggles with reading between the lines sometimes, so I emailed them to clarify and the standard query is what they're after.
Just for context, my manuscript isn't completely finished but there's nothing in the guidelines to suggest it needs to be finished to apply. If anyone has any feedback or insight they could offer me, I'd be super grateful! Thank you :)
Dear [Agent],
As you represent [LGBT+ romance author], I believe you would be interested in my LGBT+ contemporary romance, QUESTIONING, which will be complete at 80,000 words. It merges the exploration of a newly discovered sexuality as seen in Kate Davies’ In At The Deep End with the wholesome, diverse found-family cast of Casey McQuiston’s One Last Stop.
Lucy is happy to spend the rest of her life in Harrison’s shadow, but she isn’t content to be confined to their kitchen only making meals for him and his fancy friends. She wants to be a real chef. When she gently brings up the idea of culinary school with Harrison, his temper flares and he kicks her out of their shared flat.
Heartbroken and temporarily homeless, she knows that Harrison will eventually calm down like every other time he’s broken up with her. She reconnects with an old friend who gives her a place to stay and introduces her to Manchester’s thriving queer scene. There she meets Aaliyah, the eccentric artist whose confident and flirty nature stirs feelings in Lucy that are much more than friendship. She has to decide whether to stick with the straight-and-narrow life she’s envisioned for herself since she was sixteen, or take a chance on this side of herself that she didn’t even know existed before now.
As a disabled, bisexual woman living in a society where productivity and heteronormativity are the key metrics of success, I’ve always sought out ways to escape. This has inspired me to create narratives that others can escape into, where queer characters all get their happy endings. Queer joy deserves to be given more space within the literary canon and I want to be part of that.
After taking an online writing course and meeting women from similar backgrounds to me, I realised that being an author might be an achievable dream. In the years since I finished that course, I’ve watched hundreds of YouTube videos, listened to hours of podcasts and read any craft book I’ve been able to get my hands on. I also received a mentorship opportunity with the editor Nicky Lovick, who suggested Frog Literary as a good match for my book.
First 300
The smoke alarm cuts through the quiet of the flat like an air raid siren, interrupting my final rehearsal of the speech I’ve been planning for weeks. I rush across the living room, grabbing a tea towel from the neatly folded pile and frantically wave it under the screaming white box. The noise continues to pierce through me, my short arms useless in the face of the high ceilings. I pull a stack of my cookbooks from the counter and lay them on the floor.
‘Sorry,’ I mutter, stepping onto Marco Pierre White’s face with my bare feet.
With the beeping finally silenced, I have to contend with the source of the smoke. A trickle of grey leaks from the top of the oven, and I send a silent prayer to the universe that my bread is salvageable. I need tonight to go well.
Pulling down the silver handle, a thick cloud billows out from inside, fogging up my glasses and filling the space with the scent of scorched sourdough. I haphazardly wrap the tea towel around my hands and grab the searing hot tin from the oven, the thin material barely enough to keep my hands from suffering the same fate as my poor bread with its charcoal-coloured crust.
I throw the whole thing into the sink, tears pricking at the edges of my eyes, though that could just be from the smoke that’s hanging around the kitchen like I’m in Victorian London rather than 21st Century Manchester. Harrison will be pissed off if he comes back to a smog infested flat, so there’s no time to cry over burned bread. Instead, I crack open the windows to the maximum amount possible on the 27th floor without being a suicide risk and head out to buy a replacement loaf.
When I get home, the flat is back to normal, the neat surfaces and sterile black furniture all looking exactly as it should. I close the window, hoping that heat from the rest of the cooking will ward away the March chill that has seeped in.

2024.05.19 12:40 replickady One viewing in 4 weeks! Opinions?

Hi all,
I don’t know if this is our pants estate agent or if there’s something glaringly wrong with our listing but we’ve had a few people organise to view the flat and then not turn up. One has come to view in the past 4 weeks, and before they only 2 others. Feedback so far has been they don’t like the view, don’t like that the walk is 10 minutes to the station.
But it’s a lovely place, we have a playground in the courtyard for anyone with kids, and a gorgeous view of the marina. In addition, you can get to central London in 40 minutes door to door.
Also happy to throw in the furniture for free if that cinches the deal, and i have no chain due to immigrating abroad.
Not much I can do about those the negative feedback. The only suggestion from the estate agent is to drop the price, but if I drop it any lower I’d be making a loss for what I bought it at 6 years ago. The flat opposite me is up for sale at £360k.
Curious to see your opinions on the listing and if there’s anything that could get some more viewings.
Listing is here: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/145632590
Thanks all!

2024.05.19 12:35 AITheXmasAH Potentially moving to the US from UK - Advice Needed!

Hi guys,
So long story short - I am in the final process of the job recruitment process for a really exciting opportunity in the US. They know I need H-1B sponsorship and, as a cap-exempt employer, they can begin the process pretty much whenever. Great.
However - this opportunity was a complete surprise. 6 months ago I moved into a new apartment with a 12 month lease, took out credit to buy furniture etc. etc. and so I have an interest-free credit card balance of around £10k. I also have a repayable sign on bonus at my job of £4k which I will almost certainly need to pay back.
This might sound crazy, but I ran the maths and I realised I could pay it all off within one year on my salary if I stayed in the UK. I have been doing that, though instead of paying it off directly I have been putting money into a savings account just because I figured since the CC debt was interest free... I may as well make some money on my money instead of paying it down right?
In any event, I'm on target to have it cleared down by the end of the year. Great. But... this is a curveball and I'm not sure how to manage the situation.
If I get the job, I'd be on around $70k per year, which turns out to be $4.6k net having used the take home pay calculators. This is quite a bit more than what I am on in the UK, but I know the cost of living in the US is quite a bit higher.
I'd plan to pretty much sell everything I own in the UK and would expect to get around £5-7k based on this. This, plus my savings would give me around £10k to play with.
Overall, I expect I'd move within 5 months so I would really like to start planning now and put a financial plan together. My current thoughts are thus:
Overall I am stumped if this is a good plan or not. Alternatively, I could just carry on paying the minimum debt payment in the UK until the interest free period expires, but this doesn't sound like a good idea.
Ugh... I am so excited about this opportunity. I really wish I saw it coming 6 months ago!! I would have made such different decisions. But... hindsight is always 20/20.
If anyone has had a similar situation I'd love to hear your advice. Thank you <3

Though many of these have been damaged over the centuries by earthquakes or looters, they still provide a fascinating insight into life during Roman times.
In addition to the grandeur of its ruins, Volubilis holds some other secrets too; it's home to several unique species of plants that aren't found anywhere else in North Africa.
As you wander through the olive groves and palm trees, keep an eye out for lilies called 'thousand flowers', a type of wild iris which blooms between April and May each year. The sight is truly magnificent!
Volubilis may not be as large or well-preserved as some other historical sites in Morocco, but it certainly deserves a visit for those interested in discovering more about this nation's past.

2024.05.19 02:22 Mathdebater404 I can barely breath there’s so much uphomiedoyouneedacuddle around here

(Please ask me what it is)
Hey so I’m a 26 year old dude from the UK staying up past my bedtime looking for a reason not to sleep
