Restore airstream 1969

1967 Overlander International

2024.05.31 18:24 Montananarchist 1967 Overlander International

I'm considering selling my vintage Airstream. I've had it for decades and had lots of fun but now that's it's just me it's really too big.
I was hoping you guys could give me an idea of what it's worth. Like I said it's a 1967 26' international with twin beds. It's got the cool vista view skylights. The original front futon has been replaced with a full size bed that converts to a table. It was a really professional job and looks great.
It's got a spare water tank under the front bed, battery containers for four Trojan T-105 batteries were added under the starboard twin, and there's aftermarket Air Conditioning. The soft goods are from a 1980's restoration and are older and faded in places but useable.
All the kitchen and bath fixtures are original, and the bath is a cool seafoam green. The fridge is propane or AC and both work.
The hot water heater is nonfunctional but I bypassed it to run an exterior solar water heater. The main forced air furnace works but needs to be replaced because it keeps setting of a carbon monoxide detector. The inverter was replaced with a battery charger without an AC inverter. There are a couple smaller (dinner plate size) dents but otherwise the exterior is good.

2024.05.25 04:47 Ch0wdah617 Absolutely wild end to my Grass-only Hardcore Run in Shield. Strap in for a long post.

After lots of planning, went up against Leon today. It came down to the very last move. Read on to see how it ended...
I first have to talk about how my run almost ended with Melony. I overestimated Travis the Rillaboom's Defense and HP pool while Gigantamaxed (used max soup from Isle of Armor) and thought he could tank a hit from her Darmanitan. I had built up several boosts and really didn't want to lose that momentum...and I paid for it. Even after getting through Darmanitan, her Lapras did a number on my team. By the end, I lost Rillaboom, Venusaur, Ludicolo, and Gourgeist. I was pretty dejected and had to step away for a bit.
After coming back, I put together a new squad:
  1. Randy the Rotom-Mow: speedy special attacker with Reflect and Eerie Impulse to support
  2. Campo the Leafeon: Bulky Physical attacker
  3. Velma the Vileplume: Sleep Inducer with Charm to support
  4. Venus the Ferrothorn: Bulky Defender with Stealth Rocks and Spikes
  5. Rosso the Roserade: Speedy Physical attacker with Rain Dance and Weather Ball
  6. Wilson the Whimsicott: Speedy supporter with Tailwind, weather setting, and Moonblast
My strategy for Leon was to cripple Aegislash so I could use it as set-up fodder for Rosso. To do this, I led with Randy who sey up Reflect (Light clay equipped) to reduce the effect of Sacred Sword, then started dropping Aegislash's SPA wih Eerie Impulse. Once I got it to -6 SPA, I switched to Velma who put it to sleep (after a miss), then dropped it's ATK to -6. Velma stayed at full health thanks to Black Sludge. From there Venus came in to set Stealth Rocks and 3 layers of Spikes while giving chip damage to Aegislash thanks to Iron Barbs. Leftovers kept her at nearly full health. Velma came back in to set up the sun and put Aegislash to sleep again so Rosso could come in and go to +4 SPA with 2 Growths. Rosso then set up the Rain and KO'd Aegislash with Shadow Ball.
As expected, Cinderace came out next, and because of the Rain, Leon selected Acrobatics whch hit Rosso hard into the Red. With the Rain up, Weather Ball KO'd Cinderace easily.
Dragapult was next, which was also expected. I had hope to set up Tailwind before it came out, but I was too concerned about Aegislash taking out Wilson and losing the speed advantage too early in the battle, so I hand't. I knew I needed to preserve Rosso's ability to set the Rain, so it was now or never for Wilson, so I sent it out, armed with a focus sash. Surprisingly, Dragapult went for Shadow Ball instead of Flamethrower, so Wilson tanked the hit just above 50%. This allowed Wilson to not only set up Tailwind, but also survive a second (surprising) Shadow Ball in the red and then KO'd Dragapult with Moonblast. An unexpected, but net positive turn of events.
Surprisingly, Haxorus came out next and was obliterated by a Moonblast (after Rocks and Spikes) from Wilson.
Next was Seismitoad and Even after Rocks and Spikes, Moonblast was not enough to KO. So Liquidation took Wilson down.
I knew I needed the Rain to have a chance against Charizard, so Rosso came back out and valiantly danced the rain back into existence before going down. Good night, sweet prince.
I sent out Campo who was holding a Choice Scarf. The plan here was to make sure I outsped Charizard and hit it as hard as possible. That meant using the strongest neutral move I could think of, Double-Edge. To preserve as much HP as possible, I dynamaxed to turn the move into Max Strike and avoid the HP loss against Seismitoad and took it down.
Charizard came out and immediately lost 50% of its health to Stealth Rocks, and Gigantamaxed. Campo outsped thanks to the Scarf and hit it down to about 30%, and also dropped its speed (which I totally forgot about and it absolutely was critical). G-Max Wildfire hit hard, but didn't KO thanks to the Rain. That allowed Campo to hit another Max Strike to bring it into the red and give it another speed drop. The next G-Max Wildfire and residual damage brought Campo to about 10% as its Dynamax ended. Then, something happened that I completely failed to account for...Leon used a Full Restore. I was crushed. I thought it was over right there. I knew all I could do was click Double-Edge to get at least some damage. As I clicked it, I thought maybe I should have clicked Dig to simply stall out its last Gigantamax turn, but it was too late (and every bit of damage was needed). Campo hit it and then went down to recoil. The benefit to this was that when Charizard went for Max Airstream, it missed due to Campo being gone, and Charizard did not get the speed boost. That luckily ended its Gigantamax reign of terror.
I sent out Randy knowing he could outspeed, but I had focused on it being a supporter so the only damaging move was Shadow Ball. I opted to go for Eerie Impulse, hoping that Leon might start going for the more accurate, but weaker Air Slash instead of Fire Blast and that the SPA drop might help. Randy was already at 60% health and went down to a Fire Blast.
Knowing my only chance was with Velma, I next went with Venus. My thought was that this would surely bait a Fire Blast, and maybe that would miss....and it did! This gave Venus the chance to hit Charizard with an Iron Head, the only damaging move I had on her. It was chip damage, but that got Charizard down to about 30%.
Velma was the last member of the team, and at 95% health. Her only damaging move was Giga Drain. Charizard was in the yellow but was -2 SPE. I ran the calcs and I needed to hit it 3 times. THREE TIMES. I clicked Sleep Powder, and it hit. As advertised, it hit 3 out of 4 times this match. I clicked Giga Drain. As I did, I started to think...Oh god, what if he has another healing item? I'd be finished, almost guaranteed. Luckily, no healing item from Leon. Charizard stayed asleep! Ok, there's still a chance....Giga Drain hit for the second time - Charizard is in the red. Another will take it out, even on a low roll. I just need it to sleep one last time....and it...
*STAYED ASLEEP!\*
Velma took it down with Giga Drain on the next turn and it was all over.
I definitely had some luck in that last battle with the Fire Blast miss, Dragapult not using Flamethrower, and Charizard staying asleep for 3 turns. I also know I put myself in a tough spot with not planning that well for Melony and losing some team members that would have made it easier. That's why I spent so much time and came up with such a lengthy strategy that ultimately succeeded.
I am relieved and pumped this worked out well. To win after such a big blow on the 6th gym was amazing and it makes me want to try Grass-type runs on other games. I'm thinking ORAS next, but open to thoughts if anyone has suggestions.
If you got this far, thanks for reading. I always enjoy hearing detailed stories here or on Youtube, so I thought I'd share this one while it was fresh in my mind. Good luck with your runs and have a good one.

2024.05.25 02:42 PositiveLibrary7032 Voting at 16 so copying Scotland then.

Voting at 16 so copying Scotland then.
Labour would allow 16-year-olds to vote in future general elections Party intends to lower voting age within first year if it wins power on July 4.
About 1.5 million people under the age of 18 would be given the vote in general elections under plans agreed by Labour in the final draft of its national policy forum. It would be the largest change to the electorate since 1969, when the voting age was reduced from 21 to 18.
The party is looking to the example of Scotland and Wales and believes a similar time frame for enactment is possible. Scotland has already lowered the voting age for local and Scottish parliament elections to 16 and Wales has done so for local and Welsh parliament elections.
The process of lowering the age in both was swift. In Scotland, it took less than six months from Scotland being handed the power to reduce the age to the passage of legislation. Researchers at Sheffield and Edinburgh have found that the move resulted in young voters being more likely to turn out as they grew older.
In Wales, where the Labour-run government has been consulted by the party in Westminster on how a nationwide extension could work, the two pieces of legislation both passed no more than a year after being introduced.
The policy is likely to benefit Labour in future elections. In a recent YouGov poll for The Times, Labour commanded a 25-point lead over the Tories, with the party on 46 per cent of the vote and the Conservatives on 21 per cent. Among 18 to 24-year-olds that gap widened, with 54 per cent planning to vote Labour at the next election compared to just 9 per cent for the Tories.
One senior Labour source said: “It [the policy] has the double benefit of not costing very much to do but of helping secure a second Labour term.”
It is not clear how strong an electoral advantage the policy would be for Labour. YouGov’s latest MRP poll, conducted in March 2024, gave Labour a 154-seat majority with the party winning 403 seats to the Tories’ 155.
Yet an analysis by The Times of population data suggested that if 16 and 17-year-olds were allowed to vote — and they voted in a similar way as 18 to 24-year-olds — it could result in an additional eight seats flipping from the Conservatives to Labour in England alone. This could increase Labour’s potential majority to at least 170.
The seats where 16 and 17-year-olds could make a difference are predominantly in southern England, and include Aldershot, Aylesbury, Bridgwater, Frome and East Somerset, Hornchurch and Upminster, Mid Derbyshire, North East Hertfordshire, and Sittingbourne & Sheppey.
Patrick English, director of political analytics at YouGov, said: “We would generally expect that lowering the voting age would be electorally advantageous to Labour, as younger people are significantly more likely to back them over the Conservatives, or indeed any other party.”
The typical 18-year-old was almost ten times more likely to back Labour than the Conservatives, he said, and this would be expected to be similar for 16 and 17-year-olds.
“However, we also know that young people are among the most unlikely voter groups to actually turn out. So, any advantage Labour have in terms of raw support among this potential new block of young voters will be significantly reduced at the ballot box by their low participation rates,” English added.
Florence Eshalomi, the shadow minister for local government, said: “Fourteen years of chaos under the Conservatives has left many feeling ignored and left out by the political system. Labour is committed to restoring a sense of trust and national pride and that includes by strengthening our democracy.
“Our elections are built on the basic principle that those who contribute to our country should have a say in how it is governed. Yet 16 and 17-year-olds are still blocked from voting in English elections.
“It’s time to turn the page on the eroding of our democracy and give the next generation a chance to help shape their future.”

Secretary Blinken praises Pashinyan's "extraordinary job in very difficult times", says the U.S. is considering more assistance to Armenia

REP. COSTA: What Azerbaijan has done with the natives of Nagorno-Karabakh is unconscionable. We've increased humanitarian assistance from $15M to $65M but I think that Armenia has requested an additional $200M; the Congressional Armenian Caucus has sent you a letter to that effect. Where are we on that?
BLINKEN: We are looking at a series of requests from Armenia to see what we can do to strengthen even more our support and cooperation with Armenia. I met with PM Pashinyan just a few weeks ago in Brussels with the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, precisely to locate what more we and the EU can do to support Armenia and we'll be moving forward on a number of different areas. PM Pashinyan has done an extraordinary job leading his country in very very difficult times. We want to make sure that we are getting people the support they need, including those who have left Nagorno-Karabakh.
REP. COSTA: I don't think we've used our leverage over Azerbaijan. This defense agreement that we have with them, and they have violated their agreements with Armenia. It's reprehensible what Azerbaijan has done.
BLINKEN: The best thing is that Armenia and Azerbaijan have made progress on a peace agreement. If that agreement can be reached, it will benefit the region.
REP. COSTA: I don't trust Azerbaijan.
BLINKEN: Well, as someone once said, trust but verify.

Kremlin doesn't want to guess whom Pashinyan meant when he said "two" of Armenia's "allies" helped Azerbaijan prepare for the 2020 war

Yesterday Pashinyan was asked to comment on Lukashenko's statement that Aliyev and Lukashenko discussed the 2020 war before it happened. Pashinyan said there were not one but two CSTO members that helped Azerbaijan, and criticized Russia for selling $3 billion in arms to Azerbaijan before the war. Pashinyan also hinted that Russia "imitated" support for Armenia while in reality being on the side of Azerbaijan on the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh's status.
Russia's foreign ministry was asked to comment on Thursday. Maria Zakharova said she won't guess whom Pashinyan meant, adding that "Russia did everything possible for Armenia not to feel abandoned and forgotten."

map expert Ruben Galchyan about the border delimitation

REPORTER: Pashinyan revealed that we are using the 1976 map in Tavush and that it will be used for the entire border. What can you tell us about this map?
GALCHYAN: When the detailed maps were being produced during the USSR, for the AM-AZ border alone they produced around 100 pages. For the entire Armenian border, there are approximately 1,200 maps. The entire USSR had about 1 million maps. These were not printed in one day. They would gather the information and do the process gradually. The maps were being printed in the large printing facilities of Ganja [Azerbaijan] and Moscow. The maps for the entire Armenian border range from 1969-1982. The print years are different, but the content is the same. Maybe some very minor differences of one or two meters in the most recent maps.
REPORTER: It appears they are using those maps from 1969 and onward.
GALCHYAN: I believe this particular map is called 1976 because that's when they were created specifically for Tavush. This is the same USSR administrative border of 1991. These administrative borders became state borders under the Almaty agreement. The village Kirants and [Soviet-era Azeri village] Kheyremlu are 200 meters apart, separated by a bridge. The Armenian road passes through this bridge. The USSR created the border in a way to stretch forward and cover this bridge, which is why we are giving it to Azerbaijan today and building a new bridge located fully inside Armenia.
REPORTER: Doesn't this make Kirants vulnerable?
GALCHYAN: They are replacing armed forces with lighter armed border guards. The task becomes to ensure that people don't cross from one side to the other.
REPORTER: What about the other villages?
GALCHYAN: [Between Voskepar and Kirants] the Armenian highway crosses into Azerbaijan but they have decided not to give those territories to Azerbaijan yet. Perhaps they have a plan to move the road first to pass entirely through Armenia. The government should disclose the road plans to calm the residents. If this delimitation continues all the way to the Iran border, Azerbaijan must withdraw from over 200 km2 of Armenian territories it occupied since May 2021.
REPORTER: What about the enclaves?
GALCHYAN: The enclaves appeared on the maps without legal basis. To draw a border, the state [USSR] decides that it must pass through several coordinates. Then they decide whom to give or sell the land to. In the case of enclaves, this legal document does not exist because [Soviet] Armenia's Supreme Council never held a session to authorize the transfer. Three years ago Azerbaijani foreign ministry announced that if Armenia claims the Azerbaijani enclaves legally belong to Armenia, then Armenia must provide documents to prove it. It should be the other way, though. Azerbaijan must prove that pieces of land surrounded by Armenia belong to Azerbaijan.
REPORTER: The 1926 maps are more favorable for Armenia. Why are we using the 1960s-70s maps? Is Azerbaijan against the 1926?
GALCHYAN: Of course. Under 1926 maps Armenia was 30,948 km2, around 1,200 km2 larger than today. That's how much Armenian territory was given to Azerbaijan during the USSR. If Azerbaijan doesn't accept these 1960s-1991 maps, we can always return to the 1926 maps. The latter contains no enclaves either. Artsvashen was not an exclave but rather a region entirely inside Armenia.

are some of Archbishop's allies abandoning the Holy Movement ahead of the mega-massive rally on May 26?

Yesterday Edmon Marutyan, a supporter of the ongoing protests led by the former regime and Archbishop Galstanyan, demanded that Galstanyan provide guarantees that his movement won't lead to the return of the former regime, in exchange for continuing to support the protests.
A former regime MP Garnik Danielyan, a co-leader of the protests, responded with bewilderment, calling it a strange demand from a politician who has "worked with everyone in the past". MP Danielyan said they accepted Edmon Marukyan's party members in Kirants with open arms and protected them from attacks by those who were angry at Edmon for being part of Pashinyan administration until recently. He admonished Marukyan, advising him not to make such demands.
REPORTER: The opposition did not take lightly Edmon Marukyan's demand for guarantees that the former regime won't return. What's your take?
KHZMALYAN (European Party): Marukyan's demand is indeed strange. At first, he joins the protests on Republic Square occupied by the former leaders, then demands that they don't return? Why would you go there in the first place? It's illogical so I must agree with Garnik Danielyan.

2024.05.23 04:51 ar_david_hh TT News // Pashinyan's tax deal for church and Yerevan sees sharp increase in transport revenue while sunsetting cash... What else happened on Wednesday, May 22?

Yerevan implements a stricter cash rule to combat corruption and sees a jump in reported daily revenue, fires a top bus official, new official prompts a protest by drivers

A group of bus drivers in Yerevan went on strike on Wednesday after the city fired a ranking Yerevan Autobus official suspected of "wasting" millions of dollars. The city had also reprimanded several drivers for "violating their duties and driving outside of predetermined routes".
Drivers say the firings were unjust. They also complained about the Autobus director never meeting them to hear their complaints: "Նախկին տնօրենի վախտով լավ ենք ապրել, նորին չենք ուզում". The director denied the charge, saying he regularly meets the staff.
A city official called the strike an attempt by drivers to sabotage the ongoing public transport reforms. Earlier another city official said they raised the drivers' salaries to ֏550,000 ($1,400) for 14 days of work and imposed stricter rules against smoking and improper conduct towards passengers and traffic.
OFFICIAL: The drivers are protesting because we were able to crack down on payment theft and we demanded high-quality service for passengers. We have received specific information that this protest was "directed". We will pursue and bring the perpetrators to justice. //
The drivers said they wanted the city to reverse the decision that fired Yerevan Autobus's chief architect Andranik Manukyan. He was fired after the city found $2.5 million in financial abuse or miscalculations under his tenure. He denies wrongdoing.
TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT CHIEF: Andranik Manukyan will not be reinstated. There is overwhelming evidence. As a result of stricter oversight, we have reduced theft by several millions per month. Where was that money flowing to? More on that later...
MAYOR AVINYAN's OFFICE: We recently announced that drivers must no longer handle cash; their sole duty is to drive. During the latest meeting, the Yerevan Autobus director informed us that as a result of these stricter rules, the daily revenue increased by ֏4 million. This says a lot. Some drivers and those who were fired are unhappy over this change. //
Mayor Avinyan and a Deputy Mayor met the drivers to hear their complaints. The drivers asked for their ex-boss to be reinstated. Avinyan agreed that the director must communicate with his employees more often, but said the anti-corruption steps and the reduction of the alleged fare theft [not necessarily committed by drivers] will continue.

Last year Pashinyan's State Supervision Service launched an audit of ANIF amid reports of unfairly high wages for ANIF's top brass and improper expenditures. In response, ANIF hired international auditors to "prove" that their wages were on par with similar national investment funds in other countries. Armenian authorities went on to launch a felony case based on the findings of the State Supervision Service but there have been no arrests.

PM Pashinyan made a brief visit to Iran

He participated in the official ceremony of paying homage to the Iranian officials who died in the helicopter crash, and also met Iranian leader Khamenei.
PASHINYAN: I have warm memories of the contacts with President Raisi and FM Amir-Abdollahian. Armenia and its people stand by the good friend and neighbor Iran and Iranian people during this difficult period.
KHAMENEI: Thank you. Armenia and Iran will continue the steps aimed at the development and expansion of warm and friendly relations. Our late president was very sensitive to the border issues related to Armenia and the events happening around it, and this sensitivity and care should still be taken into account. We must be able to secure our own interests. My emphasis on expanding AM-IR cooperation is indicative of the strategic nature of the relationship, but the relationship between Iran and Armenia has adversaries, and issues relating to both countries must be handled with care.
MOKHBER (acting president): All the cooperation programs with Armenia will continue. The presence of the Prime Minister of Armenia encourages and gives us strength in these difficult days. The disaster has shocked the people of Iran and we deeply appreciate that friendly Armenia shares the grief today. //
After the trip to the Azerbaijan border for the inauguration of the new dam, Raisi was supposed to visit Armenia's southern region of Syunik to inaugurate the construction of the southern section of the North-South highway, but this trip was canceled for unknown reasons.

the government is negotiating with Zvartnots Airport operator to build a new terminal amid rising passenger flow

RULING MP: Armenia has seen a significant increase in passenger flights to and from Yerevan's Zvartnots airport in recent few years. Zvartnots has physical limitations and won't be able to handle the rising traffic. We hear about hours-long queues to exit and enter planes. Do we have a long- and short-term solutions? Could we implement electronic crossing checks for Armenian citizens like it's done in other countries, instead of having border agents handle them? Perhaps building new terminals is the right approach? I've personally experienced how my plane had to wait for an available terminal upon landing.
MHER GRIGORYAN (Deputy PM): The current terminal is truly insufficient. We have made some improvements to increase the flow but more needs to be done; we need to build a new terminal. Yes, there are negotiations to build one, but it's difficult because we believe it's impossible to continue under the current contract terms because some of its parameters are unacceptable under existing realities. The 20% [presumably the profitability of Eurnekian's company that manages the airport] is too high for Armenia. We have a plan for a new terminal but negotiations continue around the terms. We will have more info next month. The investments will amount to €450 million.
RULING MP: That's a long-term solution because it'll take years to build the terminal. In the meantime, you should consider digitizing the work currently handled by border agents to expedite the processes.
MHER GRIGORYAN: We will look into it.
RULING MP: Also do something about the long lines on the border with Georgia during holidays because the problem is on their side. Our checkpoints have 7 windows while Georgians only operate 2, leading to 5-kilometer-long lines in Armenia.
MHER GRIGORYAN: We will try to find solutions.

... Armenia and the EU are discussing changes to CEPA to attach new elements of cooperation

RULING MP: Pashinyan made a famous speech in the European Parliament where he said Armenia is ready to get as close to the EU as possible. At the moment, the main tool to accomplish this is the CEPA agreement, but it's evident that at a political level, we have advanced beyond CEPA. Nevertheless, the effective implementation of CEPA is the pillar for closer AM-EU relations. Our European colleagues emphasize this during our meetings. We have information that CEPA is currently being reviewed and this is welcome news because it was written in a different era when the priorities were different. Tell us what changes you plan to make to CEPA and how much of it has been implemented so far.
FM ARARAT MIRZOYAN: Indeed Armenia and Europe are reviewing their relations and the agenda, in a positive way. We are currently discussing issues and there will be processes that are broader than CEPA. There are several such tools, some of which were mentioned on April 5, from aviation to economic diversification, improvements to quality standards and economic ties, political cooperation, etc.
RULING MP: So we are expanding the scope of areas covered by CEPA. What about the deadlines? It's 2026 for CEPA. Do we have time to implement the additional reforms by then?
FM ARARAT MIRZOYAN: Technically we are not signing a new agreement because CEPA allows us to attach these additional programs. We will continue to implement CEPA in full while simultaneously introducing new elements.

... PM Pashinyan explains the maps used for border delimitation in Tavush and all of Armenia

RULING MP: The opposition claims this process is illegal.
PASHINYAN: We held dozens of meetings at the National Security Council and Government and placed our decisions under rigorous legal scrutiny.
RULING MP: The opposition is very smart and has of course found many errors and more recently decided to pit maps from various years against each other and create a conflict in an attempt to discredit the entire delimitation process. They cite maps from 1965, 75, then 28, and more recently 88. Can you explain which maps are being used, and why?
PASHINYAN: We are reproducing the de jure border at the time of the collapse of the USSR. That means we are not "creating" a new border, we are reproducing the legal border that already exists.
Regarding the demarcation work of 1988.
(1) These efforts, led by Vladimir Movsisyan, have documents that explain when and under what conditions that work would gain de jure power. Those conditions, described by the document itself, were never met. It never gained legal power because it wasn't sent to the Supreme Council Presidency and didn't pass the relevant procedures. (2) Some demarcation work was done in 1988 but they didn't reach the mapping stage.
Regarding the 1969 maps. I'd like to use the opportunity and [pulls out a map from his pocket] and show you the 1976 map that's being used for today's process. This is the map from the USSR army's General Staff. It underwent the necessary legal procedures and verification by relevant USSR agencies. This 1976 map is based on the 1969 delimitation results; that's very important. These maps play an important role in the future development and sovereignty of Armenia because they describe the de jure borders of Armenia. These maps have 19 pages. We've done meticulous work on them and reproduced Armenia's border from top to bottom.
The opposition refuses to accept Armenia's 29,743 km2 because they are guided by the mentality of Historical Armenia. They think they are doing Armenia a favor by leaving it vague; they want it to be 300,000 km2 without realizing that by not recognizing our territories they are also opening an opportunity to shrink us down to 23 km2. That is how you lose your sovereignty and independence. They want a population that enjoys a coffee in central Yerevan while dreaming about Kars. That is how you lose Yerevan, too. This is the conceptual difference between Real Armenia and Historical Armenia. We have to choose between Real Armenia and Historical Armenia. Ապագա կա, and it's in these maps [shows the 1976 map based on 1969 delimitation], and we must ensure its security not by kissing others' boots every morning but by standing on our legitimate positions. You can shout "he is surrendering, he is giving away" all you want. We have decided that legitimacy and standing on our legitimate borders are the cornerstone for Armenia's security and statehood. We have no claim over what lies beyond our borders.

... Pashinyan unloads on Russian Empire and pro-Russian opposition forces in Armenia

RULING MP: Who benefits from derailing the border delimitation and why is the opposition doing that?
PASHINYAN: We have learned new things and realized new things along this journey. I am more confident than ever that legitimacy is the strongest guarantee we can have. The opponents of border delimitation want Armenia to stand outside of its legitimate ground so we will be exposed as a legitimate target. Why do they want Armenia to become a legitimate target? So they can convince the people that Armenia is incapable of being independent and needs to be a [Russian] fortpost. Live quietly, eat your food quietly, light your candle, and we will take care of the rest, they will say. They [Russia] will manage our foreign policy, will promise to protect us, etc. Why do you even need independence? Why do you need a parliament? Let's have it like the church. They have dioceses everywhere. Instead of 10 provinces, we will have 10 dioceses. After all, Armenia has an experience living under that regime, brought by others. We were managed by an empire. They'd travel to Kesarya for approval and return and serve as agents of foreign influence. King Pap was able to move that to Armenia, but to this day we have a problem with agents of foreign influence, but it will be resolved within the next 2-3 months.
Today we are addressing a problem that has existed for thousands of years in Armenia. Why do you think I keep bringing up King Pap? He was the last leader to take action and the process was interrupted with his assassination. King Pap [the process of making Armenia independent] will no longer be killed. As the Prime Minister of Armenia, I assure you that King Pap will no longer be killed and the statehood of Armenia will not be killed, regardless of the type of gown they wear [referring to attempts by pro-Russian forces to take over]. Bring the heaviest cross you have. King Pap will not be killed. Today's Republic of Armenia is realizing the dream of King Pap, and it has been realized, and it can no longer be killed. This is our political mission.
Today some history teachers enter a classroom and fill the children's brains with nonsense. I know exactly what is happening today. I urge students to convince their teachers to take an attestation exam to double their wages. It will also expose the teachers' level of knowledge. Spread the word, kids. Don't let your teachers brainwash you. //

... Pashinyan about the CSTO "allies" that backstabbed Armenia by helping Azerbaijan

RULING MP: Lukashenko visited Baku and revealed a pre-war dinner conversation he had with Ilham Aliyev, during which he said it was possible and important to win the war. Before the war, the two also discussed the need to rebuild the territories after capturing them through a war. "We won", said Lukashenko... "We" won, he said.
PASHINYAN: Lukashenko said what I've been telling you for 4 years indirectly because I couldn't say it directly. Now that I have that opportunity, I'll be direct with you. Two of our "allies" took part in the preparation of the 2020 war. These countries created an imitation of attempting to help Armenia but I need you to understand that the 2020 war was NOT about Nagorno-Karabakh because the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh was "closed" by them long ago. The war of 2020 was about controlling Armenia and the end of Armenia's independence.
Their expectations were not met during the November 10, 2020, riots to hijack power, so they made another attempt in May 2021. As you recall, at the time the government had resigned to trigger snap elections [Azerbaijan attacked, Armenia's "Russian-linked" diplomats resigned "during difficult hours"]; they failed again. The next failed attempt was in September 2022, followed by September 2023. The latest attempt was on May 9, 2024, and it didn't work out again, and will not work. Had we not delimited the 4 villages, we could have witnessed an attack on our borders simultaneously with the May 9 process.
In 2022 I told you that if we are able to preserve Armenia's statehood for 2 more years, its existence will be guaranteed for at least another 50-100 years. The delimitation in Tavush has completed 60% of that task. That's why they create so much noise. They want to prevent citizens from realizing that we are placing the cornerstones of our statehood in Kirants right now.
So yes, Lukashenko said the truth. I had to endure this torture for 4 years until he said it out loud. I'm happy that I was able to get him to say it. I will do it to more people. There are people who need to reveal other information. [Open լափառռոշ and speak then? Petition to waterboard Pashinyan regularly until he sings.]

... Pashinyan about relations with Russia

RULING MP: Our pensioner diplomats [a group of ex-diplomats gathered by ex-regime] recently brought forward a plan of action, one of which is the restoration of strong relations with Russia. They have always pinned the blame for everything that unfolded against Armenia on our administration, and that supposedly we are the ones who damaged the relations. What is your opinion? Could Armenia do anything to improve relations or is this a matter of Armenia and Russia having opposing national interests?
PASHINYAN: Our former diplomats must explain why in 2012-2013 [before Pashinyan] our strategic ally Russia signed a $3 billion arms contract with Azerbaijan. Explain it. They are tough diplomats who were protecting Armenia's interests, so explain it.
They must also explain the transcript of the January 2016 conversation between Foreign Ministers of Russia and Armenia. They must explain how it happened. By the way, the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Russia were "friends" and had warm personal relations. Explain why that didn't prevent the disastrous conversation of January 2016. Remember when Serj Sargsyan warned about a possible disaster during his Parliament speech in 2018? That disaster actually happened in January 2016.
They must explain why in August 2016 Russia initiated a 2-step resolution package for the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict that practically nullified any and all chances of Nagorno-Karabakh having any status outside of Azerbaijan. Although as I've already said, the "practical" chances of Nagorno-Karabakh having a status outside Azerbaijan were made zero long before that. They [big power(s)] of course didn't want to tell that to our diplomats directly, while our ex-diplomats were illiterate and incapable of comprehending the text. Or, they did read and understand but continue to manipulate today.

... Pashinyan accuses the church of neglecting its own properties and being engaged in corrupt schemes

RULING MP: The church demands 5 villages from Armenia. One of its representatives says villages Vagharshapat, Oshakan, Mughni, Yeghvard, and Mastara must be returned to the church "before you can talk about taxing the church". What's your opinion on the church demanding 5 villages from Armenia?
PASHINYAN: They have property lawsuits against Turkey so I won't be surprised if they do the same to Armenia. Years ago I offered the church leadership to develop a joint project to preserve hundreds of cultural-historical monuments that were literally crumbling. The topic didn't interest the church. The only reason I can think of is that since it was going to be a joint state project, the investments made by the church would be required to be transparent.
Not long ago we learned about a very strange process. Under the advice of the church, one of the municipalities classified a 7th-century church as an "illegal property" and transferred it to one of the dioceses. We have filed a lawsuit to return this historical-cultural property to the state and the people. [the fuck?]
A while ago we officially offered the church to improve its financial transparency by taxing them and returning all of the taxed amount back, just to have transparency. They rejected the idea. They appear to have issues with the financial flows. Why else would they turn down the idea? We were ready to return all of the taxed amount back, and then more, to help with the preservation of monuments.

Gremlin's foreign memestry spokespriest be fightin' demons

A new beef is brewing between Moscow and Armenia's pro-West speaker of the parliament who clearly needs exorcism.
Context: The ruling party and pro-West figures have criticized the church for the recent politicization and "meddling" in the state's affairs. Some have questioned whether the church is co-funding the ex-regime's ongoing political protests and things like the big stage used by Archbishop Galstanyan on May 9. There were calls to tax the church. The church already pays some income taxes but they enjoy significant exemptions. Armenia's pro-West parliament speaker Alen Simonyan appears to support taxing the church.
Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova was not happy and believes Simonyan is a devilish puppet of the West.
ZAKHAROVA: Speaker Simonyan announced the need to discuss the reasons why the church is exempt from taxation and the need to review the law. Meanwhile, Ukraine's parliamentary party led by Poroshenko has brought forward a motion to discuss a total ban on [the Russian wing of the church in Ukraine]. Why do those whom the West feeds literally become demonic? //

ruling party MP threatens pro-Russian opposition forces with retaliation if they continue to serve "foreign interests"

MP KHACHATUR SUKIASYAN (Grzo): We live in interesting times. Armenia wants to strengthen itself and its borders and become a strong state, while some members of this parliament and various political forces hinder this process. Some do this knowingly while having contracts [with foreign states], while others do it unwittingly under the influence of their friends. The history won't be kind to your names. Armenia must be a powerful independent state.
If we go back in time and remember who led Armenia and how they managed things in Armenia, and how they treated those who dared to utter the name of a foreign country or had foreign relations, they were treated very poorly. They would either end up in jail, die, or lose everything they owned. Now I'm telling you, if you cross the line and continue to hinder the development of Armenia, the same things will happen to you. Know your boundaries, or else whatever tools you used for 20 years will be used against you.
As a citizen of Armenia who has a family, children, and grandchildren, I will do everything possible to ensure Armenia becomes strong. The fairy tales you make up about us "surrendering our lands" and "our borders" are all meant to mislead the public.
Second. You deal major damage to our brothers and sisters from Nagorno-Karabakh by inviting them to join the [anti-Pashinyan] processes. The refugees are being taken care of in Armenia with social payments and soon the housing program. Do not drag them into these processes.
I get it, you are an opposition and you have rights, but everything has limits. This was a warning as an ordinary citizen of Armenia. I want people in my country to live in peace, for Armenia to gain strength and have normal relations with its neighbors, to have a strong army while not needing to use it to fight a war.
Did you schedule a protest right outside the EBRD forum in Opera after hearing that they planned to invest $500 million to develop various branches of our economy? Context in May 16 news. During the EBRD forum held in Yerevan, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between EBRD and USAID to develop the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, also known as the Middle Corridor, to further enhance connectivity between Asia and Europe via the South Caucasus.
The partnership will focus on expanding trade, green energy, investment in new industries, as well as transport and digital infrastructure in Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.
This week the EU President Ursula von der Leyen laid out her economic ideas for a potential second term as European Commission president.
While the US imposes tariffs on Chinese imports, von der Leyen has rejected the idea that the West is already in a trade war with China and she won't join the US on the side of trade barricades.
LEYEN: We share some of the concerns of our American counterparts but our approach should be different from the US. The Americans have just applied blanket tariffs. We want a tailored approach and duties that correspond to the level of damage. We want competition, we want to trade together, but it must be fair and China should stop flooding our market with artificially cheap products [e.g., electric vehicles]. We want to de-risk, not de-couple. //
Leyen also wants to create a centrally-funded European air defense system.
Europeans go to the polls from 6-9 June, to elect the 720 lawmakers who will sit in the European Parliament for five years – and the result could also determine who takes over at the EU’s executive arm.
Polls suggest Leyen's center-right EPP will be the largest in the Parliament, which could allow her to be reelected if she is able to form a coalition to gain a majority.

2024.05.21 14:02 FakeElectionMaker Leonel Brizola's political career during the Gustavo Era

Leonel Brizola's political career during the Gustavo Era
Brizola and his family, 1977
Leonel Brizola supported the Northeast-based, left-wing nationalist MNR uprising from the beginning, seeing it as the fulfilment of his resistance proposals, as it was not clear until late 1964 if the revolt's goal was to restore João Goulart to the presidency or install its leader, Gustavo Henrique, in power. On 19 February 1965, Brizola formally joined the Revolutionary Nationalist Movement and headed its masses sector.
He later exposed war crimes carried out by United States forces against civilians to the world, such as the massacre of 2,000 unarmed men and women, contrasting them with the MNR's refusal to harm prisoners. In 1969, Gustavo formally named Brizola Vice President of the Revolutionary Nationalist Movement, with him having been part of the party's executive comission since 1965.
Brizola was one of the MNR negotiators at the Rome Peace Accords, which were immediately violated by both sides, leading to the fall of Saigon in October 1972, whereupon he became Vice President of Brazil and chairman of several economic committees.
Brizola oversaw the execution of Gustavo Henrique's radical reforms, most importantly land redistribution, nationalizing energy, transportation and heavy industry, greater protection for tenants, and banning the remittance of profits instead of simply limiting it, while Gustavo focused on the international stage and rebuilding the country torn by a decade of instability and warfare (although Celso Brant was foreign minister). The two leftist politicians were close partners in government, and disagreed on few issues, although Gustavo overruled Brizola's complaints. However, the Vice President was the main person preventing Gustavo from carrying out a violent purge of landowners.
Brizola made several trips to Brasília Pact countries during the pact's existence, and in 1982, Brazil stationed military units close to the Bolivian border if the country's new government left the Pact. During Gustavo's foreign visits or whenever he was on medical leave, Brizola served as Acting President.
After the end of the Cold War in 1991, Brizola became a supporter of restoring democracy to Brazil, which happened the following year, when Gustavo ended the one-party period and allowed opposition parties to run in elections; the MNR won the majority of mayoralties, especially in the Southeast and Northeast, due to being associated with the booming economy and victory in the war.
Brizola refused to run for the presidency in 1993, instead running for Governor of Rio de Janeiro, and was elected, serving until election to the Senate in 1998. He became a major left-wing voice in the upper chamber in spite of his advanced age, frequently accusing the MNR of betraying its historical views. He died in 2004, two years after Gustavo.

2024.05.20 21:30 MichaelLanne Interview of Vietnamese Maoists

START OF THE INTERVIEW
Thiago: We want to welcome you and acknowledge your participation in this interview.
Luu: Thank you for inviting us to this interview. We are honored to participate and answer your questions, comrades.
Thiago: When was the Serving the People (Vietnam) blog created and what are its objectives?
Luu: The blog was created in December last year. With 4 main objectives, to digitize and archive texts from China, in particular texts of Chairman Mao, the Gang of Four and the Cultural Revolution, in addition to other Marxist texts such as documents from the Great Debate, Stalin, Kalinin and other works from countries like Brazil and the Philippines, in Vietnamese, so everyone can access them for free. We also want to push for the reconstitution of the Communist Party of Vietnam as a Marxist-Leninist-Maoist party and encourage the masses to practice and organize, in the north and south of the country.
Thiago: Which groups represented the left line of the Vietnamese Communist Party from 1956 until the total restoration of capitalism?
Thang: There was a rise of the right-wing opportunist line, by the group called "Nhan van-Giai Pham", which attempted to restore capitalist culture through what is called "literature for literature's sake". President Ho Chi Minh was the main defender of Marxism in this struggle.
In the Great Debate between Leninism and revisionism, Ho Chi Minh occupies the middle line. But this line was a serious mistake, because it created fertile ground for the rise of revisionism and opportunism and for the restoration of capitalism in Vietnam later.
Overall, in the history of the Communist Party, the left line was defended mainly by Ho Chi Minh, but he also indirectly liquidated this line by moving to centrism, creating a vacuum that allowed revisionism to take power.
After his death in 1969, the Left line was completely liquidated. The remaining Party leaders fell into centrism or revisionism, and no significant group represented the left line in Vietnam.
Thiago: How did the restoration of capitalism and bourgeois dictatorship occur in Vietnam? How do the State, the Party and the Vietnamese economy work today?
Thang: The dictatorship of the bourgeoisie in Vietnam began after the death of Ho Chi Minh and the seizure of power by the revisionist clique, transforming Vietnam into a semi-colony of Soviet social-imperialism. The complete restoration of capitalism in Vietnam began in 1986, when the Doi Moi reform transformed Vietnam from a semi-colony of Soviet social-imperialism into a semi-colony of American imperialism and Chinese social-imperialism, strengthening thus the semi-feudal state.
(Additional note from Luu based on Thang's response: They, the revisionists, adopt the theory of productive forces, similar to that of Deng Xiaoping in every way. This liquidated the Party, turning it into a lap dog of foreign imperialists Vietnam is currently a police state, a bourgeois dictatorship. The economy is heavily controlled by the Yankee and Chinese imperialists, the state also maintains friendly relations with foreign companies and imperialists, as they cooperate with them against the people. in general and the proletariat in particular)
Thiago: What are your criticisms of Ho Chi Minh's centrist deviation and subsequent adoption of "Ho Chi Minh Thought" by his successors? Were there any prominent leaders “to the left” of Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam?
Luu: We must criticize Ho Chi Minh's centrism and recognize that he liquidated the left line. We recognize that centrism is a very dangerous thing, even if it is not overtly anti-communist like the right line, but it creates an opening for the right line. We could compare his errors with those of Kim Il-Sung and other leaders who adopted the same positions: at his death, in his will, he did not say to defend Chairman Mao's line, but wanted " not to intervene in the affairs of other nations", although he was sympathetic to Albania and China, he also did not attack the right line, but he nevertheless refused conciliation with the Americans and the policy of capitulation that the Khruschevists were trying to impose on us. However, Vietnam fought nothing else.
Concerning "Ho Chi Minh Thought", those who claim it are dogmatists, taking its centrism as dogma, focusing on its revolutionary morality and asserting that the People's War was a contribution of Ho Chi Minh and not of Mao Zedong. They denied the influence of Mao Zedong Thought on Ho Chi Minh Thought, distorting Ho Chi Minh Thought, claiming that it is influenced by reactionary religions and ideals, transforming it from a revolutionary theory into a reactionary theory. There were no representatives of the left line, only opportunists.
Thiago: What do you think of President Gonzalo and his contributions of universal value? How are anti-revisionism and Maoism perceived in Vietnam?
Thắng: As Marxist-Leninist-Maoists, we cannot but recognize the role of President Gonzalo and his significant contributions to Marxist theory. He identified Maoism as the third and highest phase of Marxism, stating that Maoism is the Marxism-Leninism of the era of imperialism and modern revisionism. In addition, he made important contributions to Maoist theory, such as the militarization of the Communist Party, the theory of Jefatura [“Great Direction” in French, editor's note, cdp.] and the theory of concentric construction of the Party. These contributions are not only valuable for the Peruvian revolution, but also have universal relevance for the international socialist revolution. We must not forget this.
As for the influence of President Gonzalo and his ideology in Vietnam, initially, it was only mentioned through campaigns aimed at degrading his reputation by the government in place. In recent years, with the rise of the communist movement in Vietnam, the Gonzalo question has become an important issue among communists in our country. The revisionists, Trotskyists and pseudo-Maoists always seek to deny the role of President Gonzalo and use the propaganda tools of the imperialists to oppose him. Additionally, government loyalists and liberal forces are participating in this “campaign.” Thus, revisionists, reactionaries, and anti-communists created a sort of “sacred alliance” to oppose Gonzalo’s thought and contributions. Therefore, the immediate task of Vietnamese communists today is to wage a line struggle to defend President Gonzalo, uproot the weeds of modern revisionism, and advance toward the reconstitution of the Vietnamese Communist Party.
Thiago: How is the revolutionary movement developing in Vietnam and what are the current struggles of the masses in urban and rural areas?
Thang: The current “leaders” of the organized revolutionary movement are petty bourgeois. There are so-called “Marxist” groups, such as the “Red Flag League” and the “Young Marxists of Vietnam”. These petty bourgeois groups use memes to propagate and agitate, which is an action to ridicule Marxism, because Marxism is a revolutionary science and cannot be expressed through memes. This action is particularly remarkable among the Young Marxists of Vietnam.
There are also fake "Maoists" like the "Red Flag League", who deny Gonzalo and "defend" the Marxism-Leninism of Mao Zedong Thought, denying the advancement of the revolutionary struggle. They also engage in unnecessary debates online. These guys are also trying to make money by organizing readings of Chairman Mao Zedong's quotes instead of making them universal for the masses.
Luu: There are many strikes and disorganized revolutionary movements within the proletariat, which speak out against their conditions of exploitation. Many peasants are in conflict with the state over land issues. There was a recent revolt in which peasants attempted to reclaim their land by armed methods, such as during the Dong Tam revolt, but they were quickly and brutally suppressed by the so-called state “socialist”. Many uprisings have also taken place in the Central Highlands, but some of them have fallen under the influence of foreign reactionary terrorist groups and are not spontaneous like others. The masses are ready to fight for the revolution, but they are still disorganized.
Thiago: What is the general impression that the masses have of the Communist Party? What daily problems do the masses face and how are they exploited by capitalism and semi-feudalism in Vietnam today?
Luu: Within the petty bourgeoisie, there are two main camps, there is the opposition camp and the loyalist camp. The loyalist camp is generally made up of children of bureaucrats and people who know little about the state. The opposition camp is mainly represented by South Vietnam loyalists, all anti-communist, while the loyalists appear to be communist, but they leave communism aside, being only pro-state and anti-West.
Among the peasants and proletariat, we are not sure, but from what we see, the majority of them do not openly support the state, being rather neutral about the situation. However, the opposition of these classes, notably peasants and indigenous peoples, who took up arms and rose up against the state, was brutally repressed by the police forces. The only indigenous armed groups that carry out terrorist attacks are those sponsored by the United States and CIA agents, but they do not represent all indigenous movements and peasant movements that oppose the state.
The condition of the proletariat in Vietnam is not what one would call good, as even the state claims that many workers live in poverty and misery. The examples are numerous: their salary is not as good as the revisionists claim, and they barely earn enough to survive, as capitalism dictates. Even though schedules are not as strict and conditions are not as bad as in laissez-faire capitalism (like in Bangladesh or other Asian countries), state-controlled unions do the bare minimum to support the workers and seek to make them accept their crumbs and not to organize them.
A friend (who was 14, illustrating child labor) and a family member of mine worked in sweatshops and currently are in poor health, have difficult living conditions, work long hours and are not not paid enough for their efforts.
Thiago: What is the semi-colonial relationship that Vietnam maintains today with North American imperialism and Chinese social-imperialism?
Thang: That’s a great question! The relationship between the Vietnamese bureaucratic capitalist government and the Yankee and Chinese imperialists constitutes one of the most peculiar international relations for the Vietnamese state. First, the state called their relationship with them a "comprehensive strategic partnership", established with China in 2008 and with the United States in 2023. They export capital and goods to Vietnam, establish factories and monopolize the market . This relationship deepens the exploitation of capitalism and the semi-feudal condition of Vietnam.
Additional note from Luu: In terms of industry, citing data from the General Bureau of Statistics, Ministry of Science and Technology, about 75% of Vietnam's technology and equipment come from foreign countries, this technology and equipment mainly come from developed countries and regions such as the United States, South Korea and the European Union, which have shown a slight upward trend in recent years (2022 data). Therefore, Vietnam is unable to develop many important industrial technologies (such as oil refining technology, metallurgy, shipbuilding, etc.), because Vietnam's industry is heavily dependent on foreign capitalist conglomerates.
Additionally, Vietnam is a “global sweatshop” with abundant resources and cheap labor. Therefore, Vietnam has become an ideal location for capitalist conglomerates from the United States, China and other capitalist countries to export capital, establish factories and enterprises, invest and control commercial capital in our country. The working class must endure hardship with low wages and difficult living conditions, without enjoying the fruits of their labor, which are instead seized by the capitalist class.
Moreover, the export of goods from the United States and China has disrupted the Vietnamese market, as the revolutionaries of the Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc movement once said: "If our products are not purchased from the Chinese, they are bought from the West.”
Vietnamese agriculture relies heavily on Chinese traders, as agricultural products always depend on the purchasing needs of traders. Therefore, many difficulties are often encountered if China imposes border closures. Furthermore, the question of the “lease system” persists in certain small localities in central Vietnam, Vietnam still having feudal characteristics.
Thiago: How is the history of Vietnam, the international communist movement and Marxism taught in Vietnamese schools and universities?
Thang: There was a push towards nationalism and nationalist propaganda in Vietnamese schools by the revisionist clique, they masked Vietnamese settler colonialism against indigenous people and other minorities under the idea of "expansion of territory through the recovery of wild lands” that they were formerly Champa and Chenla (Kampuchea Krom Region). This colonialism was called the “Nam Tien” march south and lasted for centuries. The revisionists also liquidated and erased the history of the struggle for autonomy of ethnic minority groups, supported by Ho Chi Minh.
Luu adds: There were autonomous zones in the North and Northwest mountains, and there was also the Autonomous Mountain People's Movement within the National Liberation Front.
The revisionists have omitted many important parts of the international revolutionary movement. They also dogmatically teach Marxism as a theory without practice in universities, leading students to label it a "nightmare" and only study it to succeed in college, instead of viewing it as a scientific view of the world. They present the Great Debate as a simple “Sino-Soviet split” rather than an international struggle against revisionism. They try to get people to “believe the Party line” without reservation. They immaterialize and trivialize Marxism in general.
Thiago: What is your opinion on Democratic Kampuchea [ Cambodia, editor's note, cdp.] and Laos? Is there a Marxist-Leninist-Maoist movement in these two countries today?
Luu: This is a delicate question for us. We recognize the national liberation of the people of Kampuchea led by the Communist Party of Kampuchea against the military dictatorship and the American imperialists. We maintain a neutral view of the policies implemented under his government, but we understand that Pol Pot betrayed the Cambodian revolution by supporting the revisionist clique of Deng Xiaoping and arresting the so-called "Gang of Four."
Pol Pot fell into revisionism in his later years. We also oppose the Vietnamese invasion of Kampuchea and the Chinese invasion of Vietnam; which was just a repeat of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. It was a war that only served the profits of two social-imperialist blocs.
Laos today is a semi-colony of Chinese social-imperialism. This country owes China around 25 billion dollars and has had to destroy many lands and rubber plantations. In 2021, the Laos–China (Vientiane–Kunming) high-speed railway line entered service. In addition to tourism needs, this railway is also used to transport timber, rubber, food and minerals from Laos to China. This railway is part of the so-called “Belt and Road” proposed by the Xi Jinping clique.
The People's Revolutionary Party was formed after the Second Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam. In the 1950s, they were not a puppet of Soviet social-imperialism, but became one in the 1960s, falling completely into revisionism after the war and after gaining independence. , being occupied by fifty thousand Vietnamese soldiers, which signifies their dependence on revisionist Vietnam and the social-imperialist USSR. After the fall of the USSR, it became a semi-colony of China.
We have no further information on the Communist Movement in Laos and Kampuchea, so we cannot say anything further on this matter.
FINAL NOTES:
Thang: We are very grateful for this interview, it not only marks the solidarity between the Vietnamese and Brazilian proletariat, but also serves as a great example of proletarian internationalism in the class struggle, the national liberation struggle against imperialism and revisionism. Red salute from Vietnam!

2024.05.18 19:44 michaelscape Is no title a deal breaker?

Hi everyone, I'm considering buying a 1976 airstream lanyard for $7500 on monday that has no title. This is like all my savings so I'm really nervous about the title situation. We want to buy it to actually use it eventually, not just sit on our property.
Details: The details of the trailer sound and look great with good photos and the current owner recently towed it 200 miles from the property he owns and put on new tires. If it looks weird when I get there in person, I have no problem saying NO (messed up axels, frame issues etc.).
The trailer has no title, but has permanent Virginia Plates (seller and I are both located in VA). So obviously someone registered it at some point. The airstream has a VIN as well. Asking around to others in Virginia you can get an abandoned title if you have the DMV list the trailer for a set amount of time to see if its stolen (I guess if it is you're just S*** outa luck and lose the trailer I'd guess) or you can get a title that claims you built a tiny home and get a new VIN issued (making the airstream not technically have an airstream title at that point).
We really want an airstream to travel with our small family and are willing to spend money and time restoring it, but if it cant be registered for travel or we may have it taken back by a legitimate owner, thats a lot of risk. Is there anything I can do to ensure it isn't stolen or to reduce the risk here? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks,
EDIT: After some guidance from others, I'm passing on this trailer, though I'm telling the seller if they get a title I'd be interested of course. I'll save my airstream fund for another opportunity down the road. Thanks for the gut check on the title, feeling like I dodged a serious headache.

2024.05.13 09:33 MykleKestral Any Idea what this is?

Any Idea what this is?
Hi everyone, I'm new to this sub and I'm looking for some help to figure out what this car is. From first glance it looks like some sort of a Willys Jeep but the more research I did it only made me more confused.
For some history of the car, it was found and bought by my Grandpa in Queensland, Australia, the original owner had it in the Northern Territory before moving it down to QLD. in the 80's and he bought it for about $300, it ran well from what my Dad said but my Grandpa did swap the original holden engine with another holden engine because the original one it came with died, and over time the car just sat and decayed into the state its in today.
The reason why this car confuses me is that its some sort of a Willys Jeep, that is a right hand drive, has a Holden HT badge (photo attached) which it is very clearly not any sort of a Holden HT and the badge was only used from 1969 to 1970, It has coil springs on the front wheels and no other badges or easily identifiable marks or branding and even has a bullet hole in the front windshield over the passenger side.
From what my family has heard about this car, it was from the Northern Territory and was used as a bull chasing car and seems to have been domestically made by Holden and potentially modified later. That's where my information about this car ends.
My family is interested in restoring it and were wanting to just know a little more about it to see if there were more like it or if we can get parts.
If anyone has any clues or any information they could share that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

2024.05.12 16:29 Nathan1123 Twilight Zone Integrated Universe (Part 2)

This is the rest of the timeline that I threw together, taking the thought experiment of "what if the Twilight Zone episodes took place in the same universe?" to its logical conclusion. The first part can be found here.

Alien visits and invasions (c.1955-1959)

The end of World War II marks the end of the "historical" episodes of the Twilight Zone, meaning that the rest of the episodes either takes place near the "present day" (1950s-1960s) or in the future (after 1964). The first category of episodes I want to address are those that involve alien visitations or invasions, and offer an explanation for why there are so many alien encounters over a relatively brief period of time.
Old Ben had been hiding on Earth for a while, possibly thousands of years, before he was suddenly discovered in the episode The Fugitive. This episode probably took place in the mid-1950s. This single discovery may have triggered a kind of "awakening" where Earth's existence suddenly became known to many alien races at once. Just like the discovery of a new continent in Earth's history, these alien races reacted to the discovery of Earth in different ways. Some visited for scientific curiosity (Stopover in a Quiet Town or Mr. Dingle, the Strong), some offered peaceful diplomacy (The Gift, The Fear), some planned conquest or commercial exploitation (To Serve Man or The Monsters are Due on Maple Street), and so forth. A critical analysis of these episodes gets a general sense of what order they probably took place in, all of which happened between the mid-to-late 1950s:
The episodes Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up? and Mr. Dingle, the Strong both make reference to an arms race between Mars and Venus, placing them around the same time. The secret experiments of the Martians were probably responsible for other individuals inexplicably receiving superpowers (The Prime Mover, The Four of Us Are Dying, and What You Need). This places all of these episodes around the late 1950s, or c.1958.
Even though no aliens actually visit during the episode, I Dream of Genie technically falls into the third category listed above, i.e. humanity being paranoid of an impending alien invasion. The genie here may be the same one who encountered Arthur Castle (The Man in the Bottle). This places both of these episodes in c.1959.

Space and Interdimensional Travel (1959-1963)

As mentioned earlier, the first phase of episodes involving space travel are limited to short distances between Earth and the Moon. There are four episodes that fall into that category: Where is Everyone?, I Shot an Arrow into the Air, And When the Sky Was Opened, and The Parallel, all of which can be solidly dated between 1959-1963.
Where is Everyone? explicitly gives the date as 1959, but it's mentioned that they are making preparations to land on the Moon. With the advanced space traveling technology stolen from the Kanamites, it's possible that the Moon landing was a full ten years earlier than in our timeline. As mentioned in a previous Reddit post, I Shot an Arrow into the Air is a very strange episode astronomically speaking: how could the astronauts not realize they traveled too short a distance to be on any other planet but Earth? Maybe because the humans didn't actually build this hyperspace engine, but they are still struggling to reverse-engineer the Kanamite technology, whose navigation equipment may still be a mystery. These kind of inferences is chiefly the reason why I pushed the alien invasions to the 1950s.
And When the Sky Was Opened mentions the astronauts rode in a X-20 Dyna-Soar, which is a real spaceship built in 1963 by the Boeing corporation. In our timeline, the project was canceled and the spaceship was never actually used, but this raises multiple questions. On the one hand, we could say that the project was successfully completed in the Twilight Zone universe. But on the other hand, at the end of the episode some unseen force erased the space craft from existence.
The Parallel specifically mentions that John F. Kennedy is President, dating the episode to 1963. But this tangentially opens up a related category of Twilight Zone episodes, regarding Earth's relationship with parallel universes. Just as was the case with extraterrestrial contact, the episodes regarding parallel universes can be arranged in a logical order:

The Cold War, and the Devil's influence (1961-1964)

The Whole Truth is dated to 1961, and this has some fascinating implications for the rest of the timeline. In this episode, a used car salesman possesses a car that causes its owner to always tell the truth. At the end of the episode, he convinces a Soviet correspondent to gift the car to Premier Nikita Khrushchev, during his meeting with President John F. Kennedy (which historically took place in 1961). But what geopolitical implications could there be if the premier of the Soviet Union was compelled to always tell the truth? Historically, Khrushchev already had a tenuous control over his regime, so a disaster like this could easily cause him to become deposed or even assassinated (not unlike the alternate timeline in the 1980s Twilight Zone episode Profile in Silver, but that's a story for another time). It may be the sudden shift in leadership of the Soviet Union that sets events in motion that leads to the nuclear war later in the timeline.
Knowing that the Devil is always active during times of political crisis, then it may be around this same time that the epilogue of The Howling Man takes place, when the Devil is released once again. The Devil appears in a female form in the episode Of Late I Think of Cliffordville, which is explicitly dated to 1963. Thus, other episodes that feature the Devil operating in the present day can be dated between 1961-1963 (Escape Clause, Printer's Devil, A Nice Place to Visit, and The Hunt). There are, of course, other episodes that involve demons or witchcraft (such as The Chaser, The Jungle, or Jesse-Belle) but not the Devil himself.

Robots and Sentient AI (1965-1974)

There are quite a lot of Twilight Zone episodes that involve sentient artificial intelligence in some way, or otherwise-inanimate objects that possess some intelligence (like The Dummy). Just as the case with developing space travel technology, the development of robotic technology evolves over multiple stages, which allows us to place these episodes in chronological order:
Note that this category does NOT include episodes objects that are possessed by ghosts or demons, as that obviously doesn't count as AI (for example, Long Distance Call).

Space Colonies and Nuclear War (c.1970-1997)

Having finished the 1960s, the next phase of the timeline returns to the subject of spaceflight technology, specifically interplanetary travel within our Solar System. The episode People are Alike All Over depicts the first landing on Mars, and while it doesn't give a date for this event we can estimate it from other information. The episode Elegy mentions that the human outpost "Happy Glades" was built in 1973, located on an asteroid 655 million miles from Earth. This distance is not enough to be outside the Solar System, but it is far enough to be located in the asteroid belt. Because the asteroid belt is farther away from Earth than Mars, then the first landing on Mars must have already happened by that point. Thus, this episode must take place in the early 1970s at the latest. With the acceleration of space travel technology, it's possible that the iconic Moon landing in 1969 was actually on Mars in this timeline.
There are two episodes that involve space travel to planets in other solar systems, supposedly close by to ours (The Invaders and The Little People). Both of these races had visited Earth years ago (Stopover in a Quiet Town and The Fear). These most likely take place in the late 1970s or early 1980s. At this stage, humanity is just exploring other planets and not attempting to establish colonies yet.
The episode Elegy establishes that nuclear war broke out in 1985, and a few other episodes take place around this same time. The growth of technology and social development since the Kanamite invasion did nothing to dissuade the political rivalry between the United States and Soviet Union, or if anything accelerated it. The USSR was probably taken over by a more radical faction after Khrushchev was deposed from power (The Whole Truth).
Two episodes mention the impending expectation of nuclear war, but in both of these cases the war turned out to be a false alarm (The Shelter and One More Pallbearer). The only episode to actually depict the war itself is Time Enough, At Last. The episode Two takes place five years after the war began, placing it in the year 1990. The episode The Old Man in the Cave takes place ten years after the war, dating it to 1995. By that point, the US government had already been re-established, and was slowly pulling itself back together by making contact with each isolated pocket of survivors. The United States continues to exist as a nation into the far future (The Long Morrow), but there is no indication that the Soviet Union survived the war.
As a result of interstellar travel being developed before the nuclear war broke out, there was a mass exodus of human refugees that set up colonies in distant star systems. The episode On Thursday We Leave for Home says that the V-9 Gamma colony was established in 1991, and they specifically mention that it was made by people fleeing Earth due to the outbreak of a global war. The episode Death Ship takes place in 1997, which mentions they are looking for planets suitable for colonization. The episode The Long Morrow initially takes place in 1987, in which Douglas Stansfield is sent to a star system 141 light years away from Earth (the longest distance ever given in a Twilight Zone episode).

The farther future (c.2000-2185)

By the 2020s, Earth (specifically the United States) is now re-establishing contact with the distant colonies that had previously been lost. On Thursday We Leave for Home takes place in 2021 and The Long Morrow takes place in 2027. In both of these cases, there is a specific point made on how rapidly Earth's technology has advanced since the colonists left in the late 20th century. One wonders how this is possible, considering the dismal state of civilization in the aftermath of the nuclear war (The Old Man in the Cave).
One possible explanation for this is the advanced alien technology left over in Peaceful Valley (Valley of the Shadow). Originally, the town was keeping their technology hidden out of fear of humanity using it for weapons of mass destruction. But having seen Earth go through a nuclear conflict, they can now feel confident that humanity has learned its lesson and is matured to the point of using the advanced technology properly. Thus, civilization fully recovered roughly around the year 2000.
A few episodes take place in the distant future beyond the 2020s. The Lonely takes place in the year 2046, at which point humans are using asteroids as penal colonies. The Rip Van Winkel Caper takes place in the year 2061, as four criminals put themselves in suspended animation since 1961. It's remarkable to think how much the world has changed since they fell asleep, as this is one of the most futuristic dates of any Twilight Zone episode. At this point, the human race is transitioning to a post-scarcity society as gold itself can be synthesized. Finally, the episode Elegy takes place in the year 2185, which mentions that even now civilization is still feeling the effects of the nuclear war.

Conformist Dystopia (date unknown)

There are a few other episodes that take place in some unspecified distant future, most likely further than any of the other episodes so far. When arranged in the right order, these episodes depict the gradual degeneration of humanity into a fascist dystopia obsessed with conformity, as the result of introducing a technology that can completely remodel or replace people's bodies.
This technology is first introduced in the episode The Trade-Ins. At this point, the process of replacing people's bodies are still voluntary and reversible. In fact, people have to pay an exorbitant amount of money for the privilege of getting remodeled. At some point later on, the technology becomes so widely ubiquitous that it no longer is an option, but mandatory (Number 12 Looks Just Like You). This episode and The Obsolete Man have an interesting relationship with each other, which suggests they may happen around the same era. In Number 12 Looks Just Like You, it is revealed that the remodeling process has a side-effect of removing people's empathy and individuality, which could explain the rise of fascism and public executions see in The Obsolete Man. Marilyn also mentions that her radical beliefs came as the result of reading "banned books" kept by her father, which is exactly the same reason why Romney Wordsworth was judged as obsolete.
The episode Eye of the Beholder also fits into this conformist dystopia very naturally. At this point, people have been using the body-replacement technology for so long (possibly centuries or millennia) that their very concept of what even is beauty has completely degenerated and warped. Of course, there is an alternate possibility that this episode takes place on another planet instead of the distant future, which would make it the only episode to never make reference to Earth at all.
As previously mentioned, I tend to assume that The Midnight Sun is the last chronological episode, as there is no way humanity would survive leaving the Sun's orbit. One could argue that it doesn't make sense for this episode to take place so far in the future, even later than Eye of the Beholder, as technology and society seems to have been completely restored to the way it was in the 1960s. But of course, we must remember that the majority of this episode is a fever dream, and we only see a brief glimpse at what the world looks like in the real world.

Other Observations

So much for all the episodes that I could fit into a single chronology. There are other episodes that are ambiguous on their time period, but nonetheless has some interesting implications if we assume they take place in the same universe:
The episode Mute says that all humans have an innate ability to be telepathic, but requires special training since infancy in order to use it. This could explain why Hector Poole randomly develops telepathic abilities in the episode Penny for your Thoughts: he accidentally unlocked his innate ability, with the upright penny acting as a kind of placebo. Unlike the other random superpowers, it is unlikely that the invisible Martians would have granted someone telepathy, because they would have immediately read the Martians' thoughts and reveal their existence.
In the episode A Short Drink from a Certain Fountain, it is revealed that Dr. Raymond Gordon has developed a serum that can reverse the aging process. This may be the same method that Charles Whitley used to reverse his aging, and the whole claim of "acting young" was a distraction (Kick the Can).
There are several episodes in which dreams have developed some kind of sentience on their own, and have some greater insight to the outside world. In almost all of these cases, these dreams have malicious intentions that deliberately tries to kill their host (Perchance to Dream, A Stop At Willoughby, Shadow Play, and Twenty-Two). This might be the result of some kind of trans-dimensional being that is able to enter people's minds for some reason. The Last Night of a Jockey also features a powerful being that lives in his head, which may be the same creature.
In the episode The Mind and the Matter, Archibald Beechcroft has developed a method of reshaping reality with his mind. Other episodes involve people being able to reshape reality at will, who may have stumbled across the same method (A World of His Own and It's a Good Life). While none of these episodes give a date, the sequel episode It's Still a Good Life says that it took place in 1963. I also put The Self-Improvement of Salvadore Ross in this same category, even though he technically doesn't have complete control over reality, his powers are so versatile he might as well be (able to exchange literally anything for anything). Again, these superpowers can't be explained by the same invisible Martians in Mr. Dingle, the Strong because reality control is simply too much for an alien to just hand out. There are a few other episodes that involve people having limited reality control, but they only ever end up making one wish with it (Four O'Clock, Sounds and Silences, and The Big Tall Wish). In terms of chronology, we know the last of these episodes must take place before 1968, since boxing with humans was made illegal (Steel).
In miscellaneous categories, there are two episodes that feature guardian angels (Cavender is Coming and Mr. Bevis). There are four episodes that feature the personification of death (One For the Angels, The Hitch-Hiker, Nothing in the Dark, and A Passage for Trumpet). There are five episodes that feature witches and sorcery (The Chaser, The Jungle, Jesse-Belle, The Bard, and The Masks). Aside from demons and angels, it seems that Rod Serling was rather reluctant to make use of any established mythological creatures, probably because they would be too distracting from the parable-like messages he was giving. The only exceptions to this are Santa Claus in Night of the Meek and Gremlins in Nightmare at 20,000 Feet.
By far and away, the biggest category of Twilight Zone episodes are those that feature karmic judgement from ghosts, a total of 21 episodes according to my count. Typically, these ghosts come back to seek punishment or justice against the person who did them wrong (Death's Head Revisited, The Thirty-Fathom Grave, Dead Man's Shoes, etc.). Sometimes they are just haunting images of a past trauma (Nightmare as a Child, The Arrival, or King Nine Will Not Return). But sometimes, the ghosts instead are coming back to give congratulations or some kind of catharsis (Changing of the Guard, The Trouble with Templeton, or The Sixteen Millimeter Shrine). Sometimes it's a case of the ghost themselves seeking catharsis (Night Call or Long Distance Call). And sometimes they are ghosts of famous historical figures with unfinished business (He's Alive, Showdown With Rance McGraw, or A Game of Pool).
