Android tablet advice

2024.05.31 22:58 BeshBashBosh Android tablet advice

I’ve never owned an Android device but wanted to get a small 8” tablet with hi-res screen so I can play the One Piece TCG sim on the go. The hi-res screen is a must due to small text in the sim that cannot be scaled.
Well after a long search and basically finding a lot of “big name” manufacturers (Samsung, Lenovo), basically have neglected the 8” form factor low ppi 800p screens, I keep coming across the Alldocube iPlay50 Mini pro NFE, which looks pretty great on paper, but is on, and will likely remain on Android 13. (note, I’ve seen the Lenovo Tab Y700 but that’s significantly outside my budget).
Coming from being an iOS user I always knew Android was more “fragmented”, but honestly I’m quite shocked at how many tablets (even from big name brands), that seem abandoned on the OS (seemingly mostly Android 12-13).
My questions are then:
  1. Is it actually pretty much the norm and Android 13 is actually more modern than an iOS user would expect?
  2. Are devices that are “stuck” on older Android OSs basically insecure and untrustworthy for secure (average person secure in terms of using a password manager, shopping on browser with card details etc.)?
  3. Are there any more glowing recommendations (or warnings) on the Alldocube to push me over the decision line?
  4. Be honest (when isn’t the internet honest 😂), am I over-thinking this?
TIA!

2024.05.31 12:21 espmic86 SSD 990 Pro Thermal pad tickness

I Have a Samsung 990 Pro 4TB which reaches maximum 74°C under full stress, It's not too Much but a Lexer NM790 4TB in the same system performs the same Reading and Write Speeds but reach maximum 60°C, so I want tò try to cool down the Samsung.
I use two Samsung, One internally in the Laptop (XMG Neo 16 E23) and One in an External Enclosure 40gbps TB4 with Active fan cooling. Speeds are maximum in both cases, but them both reach 74°C.
I bought Arctic TP-3 Thermal Pads 120x20x1,5 4 Pieces. They are supposed tò perform well.
Now in the Laptop i dunno how nuch tickness i Need, also in the enclosure i Need the Thermal pad on SSD tò reach the metal cover so that the heat can be conducted through the Thermal pad do the chassis.
Is 1,5mm enough in both cases? Can/should i use two Thermal pads on each SSD tò reach 3mm tickness or two pass perform worse?
Or are 0,5mm pads Better in this case?
So, which tickness and how many pads?
Also very important, SSDs have the manufacturer paper on It, i should remove It in order to let the pass touch directly the Chips, right? It would be stupid tò apply the pads on paper.

2024.05.30 23:28 Didney_Worl1 Why Samsung is the only one trying to fix VRR Flicker?

Samsung has since 3 years a VRR Control option for their OLEDs.
Why no other manufacturer tries anything similar? Also why RTINGS does not mention VRR Control? This option is 3 years old...
There are good and bad reports about VRR Control, anyone with some up-to-date info? Like how much Input-Lag does it really add? Edit: on their VAs its additional 6ms.

2024.05.30 21:13 wellnowholdon Looking Beyond the V60

Heyo folks,
Long backstory here, short TL;DR story in bold down below.
So my V60 was probably the best phone I've owned. It was because of this device that I've pledged in the future to secure backup/new devices as able when I notice that they are unusually excellent performers in so many senses as the V60 is/was.
Currently using a cracked ThinkPhone with its own set of problems and both since/prior to purchasing this I've been hopefully watching the market for the last few years. Don't see anything particularly promising. As an example, the Samsung xCover line is a shadow of what the Active line was back in the day, and of course what the V60 was as well. Flagship hardware with no holds barred all that.
Anyways I'd like to pursue an alternative route to hunting down another V60, as that has been its own story. In particular, when thinking about the qualities that made me love my V60 I think the most important points to me have been:
  1. A device that works and keeps working. In sun or shine, ideal or not ideal conditions- through drops and fumbles and bumbles and so forth. Whether this capability is innately built into the device or added afterwards through protectors and cases is of no longer so important to me. As for the keep working part, I'm willing to do battery swaps a few years in to gain some more life from my device so long as it is physically in a good enough state to justify that.
  2. A device that does #1 and does so with power. I use my phone a damn lot, and the difference between an OLED-variant screen and something like LCD is not insignificant. The same applies for less resolving and lower resolution screens. Ridiculous PPI isn't needed, but there seems to definitely be a minimum in talking about screens that are held inches away from the face when watching movies or such. Likewise, for processing power concerns, I was under the impression all modern phones in the last years would be lightning quick fresh out the box. Seems like that can be a wrong assumption a good amount of the time. So alongside a great screen, great general performance specs are needed it seems.
  3. Something that gives me a gateway to great audio. Headphone jack would be great. Dedicated or better than run of the mill audio processor would be amazing. But HQ Bluetooth works as well. LDAC, aptX HD/Adaptive and whatnot. If I had to choose I'd take those BT codecs over the wired route due to a consistent trend over the last few decades to do with an aspect of #1 (live in a high humidity & salt/spray environ; exposed ports/copper reliably fail around the 1-2 year mark, even on V60. Wireless charging and audio worked just fine here though. File transfer was where it got fun.)
All this usually ends up pointing in one direction. Flagship devices that have been "ruggedized".
I think ThinkPhone is a good, recent example of that. Per the spec sheet it's really only lacking a headphone jack and DAC. For a time it seemed to be holding its own, but rather quickly after a few months that was no longer the case.
So I've written up my cellular life's story above to paint a picture of what leads to my current position. And with the way things are going I'm not sure conditions are like to improve within the next few years, say. The demand just doesn't seem to be there for lifeproof phones. I suppose a large part of this is profits for the manufacturer as well of course. Thankfully people seem to be around pools enough that IP ratings are now a thing that have stuck for the most part. Progress!
But, in thinking about all of this I'm not sure I want to (or can afford to) keep replacing devices in the interim while waiting on a tank of a unit like the V60 to be released again by whichever company. Instead, I've begun shifting interest to these phone cases that appear to be tanks in their own right. Even if a vast majority of feedback on these units is hype, some of the stories of what devices have survived are the kinds of situations only my V60 or old Galaxy Active S8 have gone through and lived to tell the tale.
As this community represents a gathering place for a device that has been (and continues to be) the gold standard- could I ask opinions on how close to the V60 experience everyone feels I might get if I were to, say:
Purchase a new Sony Xperia, perhaps that 1 VI coming out soon, cackle with glee at my headphone jack for a moment after unboxing, and then slap every protector known to mankind over it and furiously pray to the ThinQ hegemony?
Or
Go the route of something like the Fairphone 5, which if it's going to work at all in my region, my carrier will be the one it works on according to the peoples - purchase this phone and take advantage of its intentional ease of repair to stockpile replacement parts and swap them out as needed. Accomplishing long life by accounting for piecemeal failure.
The Sony channels the excellent Audio, Display, and Performance aspects that the V60 delivered. Falling fairly short in the durability category even with aftermarket protection, given available options for these models.
The Fairphone channels a degree of the Display and Durability aspects where durability here means partial ingress protection and more importantly the ability to conveniently replace parts as needed. Falls fairly short in the Audio aspect though, and can't speak to Performance though it appears to loosely match the V60, and I imagine will accordingly be substantially behind the Sony.

2024.05.30 20:05 littlekittybear Recommend me the least efficient, hottest damn dryer possible

Ok, I fell for shiny and new and have all the regrets. 1year and 1 month ago (warranty related) we bought the only LG w/d combo available at Best buy that was small capacity and has a ventless dryer.
Our stackable set is upstairs and the space is TIGHT so we needed the European size. Original combo was a 10 year old Whirlpool set that I miss every day. The dryer in the old set did have a vent and BOY did that puppy get hot. It was great. Eventually it died and we fell into the world of searching for replacements.
Smaller capacity is harder to come by in the states, but we did find one and thought we'd be fine.
1 year and 1 month later the new LG electric ventless dryer has done nothing but soak up my time (instead of the moisture from my clothes). Why so long? Because we're fucking stupid, okay? It took a longgggggg time to dry (2ish hrs), but for a while our clothes were eventually getting dry. Lately, totally kaput (3-4 hrs and still damp) and with everything I've read about Samsung/LG I'd rather throw in the still-wet towel and just switch to a different brand. I just want dry clothes.
Had a technician out today who confirmed no heat and to go back to the manufactureBest buy. While probably fixable, not worth the investment to fix.
What brand and vendor would you recommend for tight spaces? Bonus points if it has a vent and gets so hot you are genuinely worried about damage to clothing. (I'm partially kidding.)

2024.05.30 13:47 CryLopsided2333 One Month of Using the Honor Magic 6 Pro

As a former Samsung user, my previous phone was the Galaxy Note 10 Plus. A month and three days ago, I bought the Honor Magic 6 Pro. Here, I'll share my comprehensive experience, detailing what I gained and what I lost by switching to Honor.

Advantges:

  1. Design and Build Quality: The phone is aesthetically pleasing and excellently manufactured. I feel a sense of luxury when holding the device.
  2. Camera Quality: The cameras provide the best photography experience I've ever had, surpassing Samsung, Apple, and any other devices I've tried.
  3. Performance: I noticed a significant improvement in speed and performance, which is expected since the device is new and equipped with the latest processor.
  4. Battery Life and Charging: The battery is excellent, and the charging speed is impressive. I never had to worry about the battery running out while I was out.
  5. Value for Money: The device offers the best price for a flagship phone with these specifications.

Disadvantages:

  1. Charging Speed with Non-Honor Chargers: I noticed an unreasonable decrease in charging speed when using chargers other than the one provided by Honor.
  2. Microphone Issues During Calls: My friends often complain that my voice is unclear during calls, although this issue doesn't occur in video recordings or voice messages.
  3. System Apps Quality: The quality of the system apps is extremely poor. For the first time in 15 years, I found myself downloading Google apps and third-party apps to replace the system ones.
  4. Limited Customization: The settings are not as customizable as those on Samsung devices.
  5. System Bugs: The system has many issues, such as repeated or delayed notifications. The most annoying problem is that not all background apps close when I attempt to close them.
  6. Unhelpful AI Features: The AI features promoted by Honor were not useful to me (AI portal) at all and seemed pointless.
  7. Lower Quality of Social Media Apps: Social media apps are of lower quality compared to those on Samsung, even though I download my apps from Google Play (e.g., Twitter).
  8. Poor Keyboard: The keyswift keyboard is extremely bad. I couldn't tolerate it for more than two days and then switched to the Google Keyboard (which is also not great, but better than Honor's).
  9. Magic capsule: was somewhat useful but not fully exploited.
  10. Honor Health App: The Honor Health app is terrible and cannot be linked to other apps to utilize data from wearable devices.
  11. Music App Issues: The music app is very bad. I replaced it immediately with a third-party app, but the problem persists where the song appears in the notification bar and never disappears, even if I restart the phone.
In conclusion, I liked the device's specifications and price; it's the best in that regard. However, it has the worst software I've ever experienced and needs many improvements. It is far behind Samsung's One UI in terms of software quality. The poor software quality made my experience with Honor quite bad, and I think my next phone won't be from Honor unless these issues are resolved.
Note 1: If you know any solutions to the issues I mentioned, please let me know.
Note 2: I wrote this text in another language and then translated it into English, so I apologize for any mistakes that may occur in the translation.

2024.05.30 13:38 ryleto Calling All Owners of The Frame TV (2021 and Other Models) – Have You Experienced Defects?

Hi everyone,
I’m reaching out to the community to gather some evidence and insights regarding Samsung’s The Frame TV, specifically the 2021 model, but also other models from different years.
Context:
I purchased a 65” The Frame TV in 2021, and within 12 months, I noticed burn marks on the wall where it was mounted. More recently, the TV has developed screen burn, which is particularly frustrating given that The Frame is marketed as a TV designed to display static images without such issues.
When I initially reported the burn marks to Samsung, no resolution was provided. Now that the screen burn has appeared, Samsung has acknowledged it as a fault but refuses to cover the repair costs as the warranty has expired. They concluded that the wall marks were due to dust and debris, not overheating, despite my concerns.
Your help:
I’m trying to gather experiences from other owners of The Frame TV to see if these issues are isolated or part of a broader problem. Specifically, I would like to know:
Why This Matters:
Your responses will help build a case to present to Samsung and potentially to consumer protection organisations. It’s important for us as consumers to understand whether these are widespread issues and to hold manufacturers accountable for the quality of their products.
How to Contribute:
Please share your experiences in the comments below. Mention the model year of your TV, the size, and any issues you’ve faced. If you have resolved these issues, please share how it was handled and whether you were satisfied with the outcome.

Furthermore, the fuzzy logic function ensures that you will have a night of sleep that is both peaceful and comfortable regardless of the circumstances.

2024.05.30 05:12 Tall_Paramedic5122 S22 Ultra No Service With Sim

I know alot of my S22 Ultra peoples have been having this problem. Your phone randomly drops service and you 5G/4G isn't working. The only thing that seems to work is when you are in wifi. You have tried calling your service provider and they tell you it's the manufacturer a.k.a Samsung only to find out they won't do anything about it after 4-6 hours on the phone. To fix this problem don't buy a new phone, don't take it to a fixer.
What you need is a new Antenna cable and a new Charging Port with the sim card reader. Make sure you order a new backglass just in case you crack the normal one while attempting to open the phone. You can get these items from Repair Universe and you can even expedite it. This method literally save me a useless upgrade and $300.

2024.05.30 02:17 Tomtom5893 Micro SD confusion... A2, U3 and what else needs to be considered?

Thanks to Emudeck and many big games, I'm slowly reaching the point where my 512 steam deck with its 128gb card is no longer big enough. To be "future-proof", I wanted to go straight to 512GB, as I think smaller is pointless and larger is still too expensive...
However, finding a suitable card is harder than you might think. What I have found out so far is that I should pay attention to A2 and U3, and to be on the safe side, I should go for a "more well-known", "better" manufacturer.
This already excludes many cards with worse specs and smaller sizes. Manufacturers like "Amazon Basic" are also out of the selection... All in all, the only two left on my list at the moment are Sandisk and Samsung... Not difficult as it's only a 50/50 choice... Correct??? Wrong!!!
Even the manufacturers themselves have several different cards, all of which have 512gb, A2, and U3... What's this crap?!I thought these Specs were there to make things easier for the customers!
I know that probably almost all of the cards will fully exploit the Steam Deck. As far as I know it only supports 160 read and 90 write, but you never know what you might need them for in the future.
In short, I'm now stuck with seven cards and wanted to ask if anyone knows enough about them to tell me what exactly is different and which one is fine.
So far I found out what the write and read speed of each card is. But what are the other differences? The prices are almost identical, even from the manufacturer.
All 512gb, A2, U3
Samsung Pro Plus - 160 Read / 120 Write
Samsung Evo Select - 130 W
Samsung Pro Ultimate - 200 Read / 130 Write
Samsung Evo Plus - 130 Read / <130 Write
Sandisk Extreme - 190 Read / 130 Write
Sandisk Gameplay - 190 Read / 130 Write
Sandisk Extreme Pro - 200 Read / 140 Write

2024.05.30 01:54 somrandomguy First Build in a Decade - How am I doing?

Hi all!
My PC is really to really show its age (it's built around a 4790K) so looking to build anew. Intended purpose is primarily gaming in (eventually) 4K; I upgraded my video card a few years ago so will use that while we wait for the 50 series to release but going ahead and building completely anew beyond that. Interested in maximizing performance while maintaining good noise levels and thermals as much as possible.
Candidly a bit confused about the various AM5 boards and their features - it sounds like the B650E should be relatively "futureproofed" for future AM5 socket CPUs? Know new AMD chips are being announced soon so may wait on purchasing until after Computex, but unless the uplift in performance is massive and the X3D versions are coming out before 2025 does not seem to make a ton of sense to wait in my situation.
ASRock is the only major manufacture that hasn't had a scandal in the last few years - are their boards reliable?
Also been waffling a ton on the PSU and case, so appreciate input there also; I want to mount the radiator to the top so needs to be compatible there but open to suggestions for other brands and models. Thanks ya'll!

2024.05.29 23:43 dougtro Oversized mini-split inverter

I made a mistake and bought an oversized hisense mini-split inverter air conditioner.
Here's the story - I bought a 26sqm (300sqft) place in Thailand and it had a bad old 13k samsung unit in it. My friend who lives there convinced me to get a bigger ac unit so it cools down fast as electricity is expensive so you turn it off when you leave your room. The AC guy said a 12k btu unit would be about $500 and I was worried going down in size from what the place had so I went with the 18k btu inverter unit for an extra hundred bucks or so. Well when it came it was much larger than the old unit which had me worried but it cools great and fast as I wanted. The issue is that if I leave it run all night while I sleep and have it set to about 25c (77f) it gets ice cold in there. So i set it to 30c (86f) and it still cools to 22 (71f) which is very cold for Thailand to sleep as the room is bone dry and it's just too cold for me. I'm wondering as this is an inverter and much too oversized (as I know now) for the space is it that since it runs constantly it will always be cooling at some small level and that's why it goes below the temperature setting or is this an issue with the unit do you think? I'm kicking myself for buying this as it's about twice the size that's probably recommended for a room this size. Btw the walls are concrete in a big condo building with no insulation.
I should have gone with the 12k. I'm wondering if I will have to swap the new unit out for one that's more properly sized. It gets up to 43c or 44c with extremely high humidity in the worst months.
What are your thoughts is it because it's oversized and an inverter that constantly may be cooling or is this an issue I should take up with the manufacturer under warranty. Installers in Thailand are just installers generally so I can't expect a western salesman knowledge and explanation in Thailand to steer me the right way.
Thanks
