2024.06.01 01:23 TheFrozenLegend Had one of the best feeling moments today while playing in pouring rain

I was playing golf today and it was absolutely down pouring, but no thunder and so I just kept going soaking wet. Queue up hole 14, after my first shot I was about 155ish out from the green and a group of 4x 60-70 year old dudes were hunkered under a big oak tree trying to wait out the rain. They were standing nearish me during my shot and watching me play through them. Water pouring from me, shirts and pants completely SOAKING WET, I fucking pured the absolute shit out of my club and almost holed it for eagle, ended up resting a foot and a half away from the hole, and all 4 of the older dudes under the tree erupted in applause and cheers. I was beyond stressed for such a short putt, but I was able to finish it out and secure my first birdie of the season.
The only thing that feels better than hitting a great golf shot, is doing so with the approval and applause of random strangers. I likely won’t have this again for a long while, so I plan on riding this high for as long as possible. I only have a few golf friends to share it with, so I figured I would share it to my online golf friends here :)

2024.05.31 21:04 Hunter-of-Pondies Cub Campfire Ideas

I am currently a star scout i am almost life, all i need to to (aside from scout master conference and board of review) is get a few more eagle badges. The Badge I am working now is communication, and to complete it I am planning and hosting a campfire with my troop for our pack.
I have almost everything finished, however after looking through it with my scout master he suggested i add some things to make it a tiny bit longer. I was thinking of adding a couple of those skit where they are dragged on between segments (I do not know what they are called), such as The Infant-Tree. The problem is we did The Infant-Tree at our last campfire we did for the cubs and i don't want to copy that one, cannot thing of anything else.
I was also considering adding another song aside from the two i already have-one at at the beginning, and another at the end. this song would be in the middle.
If someone has any ideas for either of them please share. This would be a tremendous help.

2024.05.31 20:25 BlackDS Driving from California to Pennsylvania, I hit up 11 parks in 14 days. [Trip Report]

I had a Six Flags and Cedar Fair all parks pass so my goal was to hit up as many parks as I could while driving back home from a work trip.
Day 1 - Six Flags Magic Mountain
My favorite big park, it's got an unbeatable upper end with Twisted Colossus (my #1), Tatsu (my favorite B&M and my #6), and X2 (my favorite Arrow and my #5). Relatively short lines and a great time every time
Day 2 - Spent like 1 hour at SFMM again then drove all the way to Texas.
Day 3 - ZDTs Amusement Park
Switch back is really good! I enjoyed the reverse bunny hills a lot. Wild how Texas let them plop a loud Woodie right next to houses but shrug
Day 4 - Six Flags Fiesta Texas
This is probably the most beautiful Six Flags park IMO. Everything was clean and well-kept. Iron Rattler and Superman were incredible. The Quarry wall and it's surroundings were beautiful. Only scary thing was the flame effects on one of their flat rides were literally burning a tree and charring the leaves.
Day 5 - Six Flags Over Texas
Mr. Freeze was incredible. I've noticed that Old Premier coasters are almost universally better than their newer stuff like Sky Rockets. Titan was a so wildly better than Goliath at SFMM, that extra 10 feet and helix make all the difference
Day 6 - Frontier City, then drove to Atlanta
Frontier City sucks for rides, cute theming though but honestly Oklahoma deserves better.
Day 7 - Fun spot Atlanta
My personal happy place. My #2 best coaster just sitting on the highway, and I can have it all to myself for $30.
Day 8 - Six Flags Over Georgia
My favorite B&M Hyper and it was a total surprise. Knew nothing of it but it feels like Steel Phantom at Kennywood! Very impressed. Blue Hawk is such a a weird Arrow but I really enjoyed it too with the new Vekoma comfort collars. IMO I think comfort collars get too much hate, especially when the alternative is big blocky OTSRs. Their B&M Flyer was also awesome but it's no Tatsu. Got a ride on GASM and...my God it needs a retrack.
Day 9 - Dollywood
This place is the perfect family park. All of their supporting cast rides and family rides were really fun. Big Bear Mountain surprised, and so did that little Gerstlauer Fire chaser Express. Tennessee Tornado was surprisingly short but not bad, and wild Eagle was alright. The stand out coaster here is Thunderhead though. Holy shit I never heard of this GCI before and it shot all the way up to my favorite modern Woodie.
Day 10 - Dollywood again
Just wanted to chill and enjoy the park at a slower pace instead of hitting up everything in a rush. Got a bunch of rerides on Wild Eagle, Lightning Rod, and Thunderhead. Lightning Rod is really cool but it's a lower tier RMC now. Never got to ride it with the launch unfortunately. I like the put of control triple down at the end though.
Day 11 - nothing (no parks open and I only had a two day Dollywood pass)
Day 12 - Carowinds
Fury 325 was pretty good, but I don't think it's B&M's greatest creation like some do. Maybe it was because I got a morning ride on it? Thunder Striker (ugh) gave me more airtime but I rode that in the heat. Woodstock Express was genuinely more forceful than Hurler and ... that was so sad.
Day 13 - Kings Dominion
God I love this place. Flight of Fear is a top tier experience that I never hear anyone talk about. I305 being a <15 minute wait on a Saturday is incredible. Their RMC is one of the best too. KD deserves more guests than it gets.
Day 14 - Busch Gardens Williamsburg
Went on a Sunday, it wasn't crazy crowded but I think that was mostly people not in line for rides and their mainly for food or other experiences. Fine by me! I couldn't get on DarKoaster due to the 2h wait. No thanks. Pntheon was pretty great and I didn't know Verboten had a drop track so that got a good scare out of me! The #1 at the park is easily their B&M dive machine though. 10 across seating and decent forces make it my favorite dive. Loch Ness Monster was kinda disappointing? I expected more Arrow Jank and it was just...too smooth and relatively force less. I'm used to rides like Viper at SFMM that throw you through their loops and turns. LNM Wasn't painful enough. 4/10
Got about 60 new credits on this trip alone!

Sometimes I just don’t know how to leave well enough alone. I decided to head out to that town in New Mexico and found a whole lot more than I bargained for. Now I guess it’s time to write about it as Belle snickers at me behind my back as she drives (I can see you sneaking glances at this over my shoulder you know). I won’t admit it to her but running into her was the best part of this whole thing.
It all started with me just walking out of the apartment I was staying in and looking for a bus headed towards New Mexico. Eventually I got lucky and found one but it wasn’t my luck I was surprised by. What surprised me was the familiar face getting off the bus. Belle looked almost exactly the same as she had all those years ago. Sure the clothes were different, maybe she was a bit cleaner after living the high life in D.C. but it was her, I was sure of that. She came running over to greet me as soon as she noticed me starring. Apparently I hadn’t changed that much either.
The meeting was bittersweet, that was my fault though, I was always to quick to business. Turns out she was heading the same way as me but she’d just gotten into town to pick up a rental. She offered me a ride and I accepted, what better way to catch up than a drive out to New Mexico. Along the way she dropped a bomb on me, she didn’t work for Chimera anymore. She was looking into what happened in Cloudcrest, the town we were headed to. It was purely “professional curiosity” as she put it. I think she’s just as interested as I am in something that scared Chimera away.
It was strange seeing Belle again, not bad but… weird. I hadn’t seen her in so long I forgot she existed outside of her letters. It was like she was real only when I read the words on the page. Other than that I hadn’t thought about her much before I started writing in this thing. Just having her there in the car, even when it was just silent, brought me back to those years in Paris. Just her and I against the world. But it wasn’t Paris and so much had changed since those days. Still, it’s nice to have her back in the flesh.
Belle also told me why exactly she’d left Chimera, or more so why she was forced to leave. It actually started with an apology. I’d been trying to avoid the topic and any fights that might come from it but she brought it up and immediately said I was right. I was right about Chimera, of course I was but I didn’t realize exactly how right. They had been keeping tabs on the letters she sent to me. They never used my actual name, not even the J. I normally go by. Even still someone realized who those letters were really going to and started using them to plot my movements around the country. Baelen also followed Belle’s own records back and figured out what she actually was. Afterwards she was offered an ultimatum, lead them to me or be interrogated for any information she knew about me.
Obviously she didn’t like either of those options so she picked up and ran. Why she ran right to the site of Chimera’s most recent failure is up for debate. She’s never been one to take anything laying down especially not blackmail, I get the feeling this is no different. What I really wanted to know was why Baelen is so intent on finding me. He knew who I was, I’d made sure of that on multiple occasions. I’ve also actively spoke out against Chimera to just about any supernatural being who’d listen to me, as if they needed anymore bad press.
What I don’t understand is what he’d gain by finding me. He has access to all the data we ever recorded. Well, anything Frank and Stein didn’t manage to encrypt or delete before they left. If he’s after that why start with me then? Why not just start looking for Frank and Stein, they had to be on some government’s payroll still. Maybe the man’s finally losing it and using me as a scapegoat? I’ll have to keep an ear to the ground though, I don’t like people looking for me without a reason.
We got to Cloudcrest just as the sun was starting to set and the town was a disaster. There were these scorch marks on the pavement where something had left holes. All the buildings we drove past on main street were still standing but only just. Bricks were missing from them and widows were boarded up. One of the houses on the outskirts had most of the roof torn off but the car in the driveway suggested that someone was still using it. The whole looked like something you’d see on television after a tornado struck.
The strangest thing was how few people we saw. There were some buildings with open signs on but I didn’t see anyone in them. There was one or two people on the sidewalks and we were the only car on the road. It was unnerving to see a ghost town so soon after it became one. Belle just parked the car on main street, didn’t even bother locking it.
Despite the state of the town it was still hard to find the kind of evidence we were looking for. I just wanted to get some idea of what did this. I assumed we were looking for a what, not a who. I still do but Belle is convinced it might be both wrapped up into one. Some sort of incredibly powerful supernatural being that can blend in with people isn’t really a comforting thought. She’s got absolutely no evidence to back that up though.
Usually looking around as it was starting to get dark would be a bad idea. But for Belle and I that wasn’t a problem. As we poked around the town we started to see more and more of those holes surrounded by scorch marks on the ground. A lot of the damage was something we ended up chalking up to wind, really really strong wind. It was almost like the most severe thunderstorm I’d ever seen had happened right on-top of a tornado. It really did look like this was all just a case of freak bad weather until we found the feather.
As usual it was Belle who ended up finding something of any real importance. A feather, massive and steel blue that must’ve been at least six feet long. The feather was roughly the size of a person but no bird could be that big, right? It was also pretty hard, not hard like granite but… it’s hard to explain. If you hit it with something you’d feel it bounce back, like the feather was a solid immovable object. But touch the feather and it would feel…. like a normal feather. Maybe it was a little more rigid but it felt largely normal. It was only when you hit it with something that it reacted differently.
Whatever that feather came from had to be the reason Chimera was here. Speaking of Chimera I asked Belle about the official statement they’d given for what happened here. Apparently it was a “geological event” that cut the place off. Not sure that one was going to hold up but apparently thats what they claimed.
Belle and I looked around a little while longer but didn’t really find anything worth writing down here. There was a little mark seared into one of the trees though. It was a bird surrounded by something that might’ve been smoke. There were a few lightning bolts in the design as well. I have to admit, it was an odd find but it didn’t mean anything to me. Could be someone with some metal working skill and too much spare time just made a design and burned it into the nearest tree.
We decided to give up a little while after sunset. We thought it was best not to make ourselves look more suspicious than we already did. After that we went in search of a bar to relax for a bit before we called it a night.. Well as luck would have it thats where the people were. Hopefully they weren’t all that was left of the town.
When we walked in four pairs of eyes scanned over us and my heart dropped. I didn’t recognize the woman with the eagles tattoos in the corner or the purple suited jackass she was talking to. Not sure why I got that feeling about him but anyone in a full purple suit out here is probably bad company. The startled bartender didn’t strike me as anything special either but the last man in the room did. He was dressed in red as usual, this time a red suit and black bowtie that made him look like a valet. His usual red tinted sun glasses sat on his nose obscuring his eyes. And his slicked back black hair made him look a little more modern than usual.
The second I saw him that all to familiar icy feeling shot up my spine. I hadn’t seen that bastard for two years now and I was hoping I was done with him. After all our deal was done, I’d fulfilled my end. Belle paid the man no mind, I’m not even sure if she could see him. I figured I should try and ignore him as well. Belle got us drinks, long island ice teas, an apparent favorite of her’s and we took a table next to the tattooed woman.
I’ve had to snoop more than once during my time at the BSA so eavesdropping from a table over was second nature to me. The man in the purple suit and the tattooed woman were arguing about something, the terms of some reward by the sounds of it. She was trying to whisk him away somewhere, I didn’t catch the place’s name, only that is was up in New York. I was trying to listen in to exactly what she was offering the guy when a name I hadn’t heard in a while crossed his lips, “Bianca”. After that it was hard to focus, I hadn’t seen her in years but there wasn’t a day she wasn’t in my thoughts at least once.
I must’ve been staring after that distraction and when I snapped back to reality the tattooed woman was staring me right in the eyes. Her eyes were… imposing, that powerful stormy grey couldn’t be natural. I couldn’t help but to feel just a little threatened by her gaze. Something about it told me I did not want to mess with her so I turned back to my drink. Belle and I talked for a bit until the man in red tapped my shoulder with a single gloved finger. As I slowly turned to him he didn’t make a sound and I realized with surprise that nothing else was making any noise either. Everything and everyone around me had slowed to a crawl. The man didn’t say a word, just handed a blue jewel incrusted dagger to me and walked out, grinning the whole time.
My body was on autopilot, I just took the dagger and started as the man in red walked out. As soon as he was out of sight everything returned to normal. Belle said she didn’t see anything when I asked, even said she only saw three other people in the bar. We left after that, I didn’t want to hang around anymore.
The dagger and that name stopped me cold, I was going to be just about useless for the rest of the night. The dagger was just something I lifted from an Egyptian museum on vacation once. Nothing really special but I wanted a souvenir and it looked interesting enough. Eventually that dagger would be a gift to my daughter. That’s where the other name that had me so distracted comes in, my daughter's name, Bianca.
I never thought I’d be the family type, especially considering that I really was content to just wander on my own. When I met Caroline all that changed though. It was a few years after I’d left the BSA, I was walking down a street in Chicago when a car pulled over. The driver Caroline, asked for directions and when I saw an opportunity for a ride I took it. I offered to give her directions to wherever it was she was going as long as I could hitch a ride. I’m not sure what made her agree. By all accounts letting a stranger into your car in Chicago is a horrible idea but she went with it. I don’t remember where exactly it was she wanted directions to, we never did get there anyways.
The two of us fell for each other, both free spirits just kind of floating around the states with the breeze. She’d owned a law firm at one point but gave it up for much the same reasons as I’d left the BSA, it just wasn’t the company she remembered. Our little adventures across the country were the highlights of my life so far and probably will be forever. I don’t think I’ve got the time to write about them here but maybe I should someday.
The one moment that sticks with me more than the rest is when I told her what I was. At that point quite a few people I’d worked with in the past had figured it out. The whole BSA knew exactly what I was and no one really batted an eye at it. All that is a longwinded way of saying I wasn’t hiding what I was nearly as much anymore. Still Caroline had no idea, no suspicion but didn’t even react when I told her. It was another thing I admired about her, she could just accept something like that and never let it bother her.
Anyway it wasn’t too long before we’d settled down on a farm in Wyoming. Marsh was the best man at my wedding, even Frank and Stein made it out. That was actually the last time I saw Marsh before the cancer took him, really one of the last good memories I had of him. Caroline and I lived on that farm for the next 3 years before everything went to hell.
It was nothing to do with us but rather what we were trying to do. We had been trying for children, we wanted to start a real family here. The night we finally did was the night I lost control. I had dreams that night, dreams of my deal with the man in red. When Caroline rolled me over that night to… try again, I wasn’t really myself. I can’t describe it, it was like I was watching myself while I wasn’t myself but I still felt… everything. Once it was all over I saw the man in red again, his gaseous form flowing out of my body and materializing in the corner. He looked up to where some part of me had been observing from the ceiling and nodded with a smile before he disappeared and my vision went dark.
After that things were never quite the same. Caroline found out she was pregnant and I was more scared then I’d ever been. Both because of the circumstances of the baby’s conception and the general fear that comes with being a first time parent. When it came time to name the baby Caroline decided on Bianca. The day she was born we all thought we’d lost Caroline. She did lose a lot of blood but she’s always been a fighter, she pulled through just like I knew she would. But I couldn’t be around Bianca, I was constantly reminded of that horrible night and the man in red. I swore I could hear him laughing way off in the distance every time I stared into her blue eyes.
I was a coward, I always was but this is another one of those times that really sticks out to me. I left them, I left my wife and my daughter because of bad memories and what might happen. Instead of being there to help, seeing exactly what the deal I made meant for Bianca, I walked out. I’ve tried to bring myself to go back, to talk to Caroline and tell her why but I can’t. Even if I did find it in me to go back things would never be the same. There aren’t words to make anyone forgive a father who walks out on his family like I did. I’d never expect either of them to forgive me in the first place.
A year or two ago I actually saw her, Bianca. Kind of hard to miss with her eyes glowing like they were. She was all grown up, didn’t even recognize me but she looked like she’d had it rough. We sat and talked for a bit on the step of some dingy apartment building in Nevada for hours. We didn’t actually talk about a whole lot, just the weather, how her day was, and what was going on in her life. She was a little guarded but it was so nice to just sit and talk with her after all that time. It made me wonder what it would’ve been like if I had stayed to raise her. Thinking about that still makes me tear up. I gave her that jeweled dagger before I left, it was a kind of parting gift. I hoped she could sell it and live a better life, the thing had to be worth a small fortune after all.
She never did as far as I know though. Something like that being found and sold somewhere might make the news, especially since it was taken from a museum. Maybe she realized who I was after all and held onto it. Not sure if that would be better or worse than just remembering me as someone who walked out of her life before she even knew me though.
That’s why I was so defenseless as we left the bar. There was just so many things I still torture myself with that were thrown back at me out of the blue. I’m glad Belle just decided to leave. I guess she could tell something was bothering me. I’m sure she could tell when I started writing this, never was all that good at putting pen to paper and it was definitely out of character.
That dagger the man in red gave me was a fake, the thing just disintegrated in my hands as we drove. I guess that means he didn’t take it from my daughter but why did he give it me in the first place? It’s all too much to think about right now, yet another reason why I’m writing about everything here.
I’ve actually started to enjoy keeping this little thing. Maybe I don’t do it quite right and I just go on and on about the past but its nice. I finally have something to tell my stories to, even if it is just a bit of processed tree. Anyways I should probably finish this up before Belle gets too antsy (I know your still peeking at this, eyes on the road). I should ask if she wants to stick around once we get… wherever it is she’s decided we’re going now. She’ll need someplace to lie low away from Chimera and I have just the place in mind.

The dagger and that name stopped me cold, I was going to be just about useless for the rest of the night. The dagger was just something I lifted from an Egyptian museum on vacation once. These seeds were shared with legendary grower Bodhi, who found one male and used it to pollinate a cut of “Cuban Black Haze” that he had. The strain was referred to as “Piff” and the seeds were shared almost exclusively with Doc D. After running the seeds, Doc selected “Piff #7” and shared the cut back with Bodhi who further worked the line. The cut was a significantly better long flowering haze variety with a shorter flowering time than the Cuban Black Haze mother or A5 father. Bodhi then later referred to the strain as “Bandaid Haze” coining the term because he said “it heals all wounds” This genome has direct lineage to the New York Hazes (NYC Piff / Uptown Piff / Washington Heights Haze) of the 2000s without any of the paranoia/anxiety that came from many of the hazes from that era. Many world renowned breeders agree that most of the “New York Haze” and “New York City Piff” varieties are all just different cuts of the same strain, that most likely comes from an early selection of Neville Schoenmakers (NL#5 x Haze) which is often referred to as the “pinnacle of cannabis breeding” that has dominated cannabis scene from the 1980s in Holland to the present day.}

Many world renowned breeders agree that most of the “New York Haze” and “New York City Piff” varieties are all just different cuts of the same strain, that most likely comes from an early selection of Neville Schoenmakers (NL#5 x Haze) which is often referred to as the “pinnacle of cannabis breeding” that has dominated cannabis scene from the 1980s in Holland to the present day.}

2024.05.31 11:03 BaronVanWinkle Does the game feel lonely?

Been playing since launch and I’ve got two and a half pages of friends, I mostly only add people with mics who are fun to play with. The last month or so it’s only ever the same 3-4 people on though. I feel like the game has kinda lost its spark for a lot of people and I’m running into fewer helldivers. Whenever I host I can never get a full team but when I quick play I almost always get at least three. Yes I’m aware of the lfg on discord but I don’t want to wait to queue up I just wanna play, I’m a dad and I don’t always have a lot of time to play. Is it just me or is this awesome game feeling empty to anyone else?
Edit: wow ok I expected only a few comments but y’all showed out. I went to sleep and woke up to my phone lit up like a Christmas tree with notifications.
So I’m seeing a lot of people ask what time zone I’m in, I’m in Hawaii GMT-10 and normally get on around 8pm. My settings are all public and I have cross play and I always appear online. Yes I KNOW about discord but I just don’t want to use a 3rd party app. This wasn’t meant to be a pity party I was just trying to gauge if maybe it’s just my time zone or if other people were having matchmaking issues maybe?
Edit 2: I would also like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has messaged me or invited me to play with them! This community is freaking awesome! Y’all smell of Eagle Sweat!

2024.05.31 03:00 InfiniteHench Dark Fluid mission (hard) felt fun until BIRDEMIC OUT OF NOWHERE

Dark Fluid mission (hard) felt fun until BIRDEMIC OUT OF NOWHERE
Maybe half the birds that appeared out of nowhere right on top of us, with no trees in sight
After the first couple drills got destroyed partly by bugs, partly by us (probably mostly us with how much fire and electricity teammates threw at them), we figured it out. Got a little farther away from the drill, the bugs spawned a little farther away from the drill, and we easily nuked them.
But holy buttsnatches, once the final drill finished and we turned around to evac, easily twice as many birds appeared as I have in my pic here. There were no trees near us, and I know I destroyed one after the first drill, and I think teammates got another somewhere before the third drill. Zero birds were around when we destroyed them.
An entire fleet of birds just appeared in front of us and absolutely shredded the team. Mission felt fun and decently challenging before that. A new objective that needed a new way of thinking and a different approach. I actually enjoyed it. But an entire BIRDEMIC appearing out of nowhere did not feel good.
Edit: Ran another one and noticed the birds are spawning out of the giant holes in the ground. I tried an orbital laser and napalm eagle to see if they are close-able. Don't seem to be, but I really only tested those two on a single hole. Also, if you lay on the ground, birds seem much less threatening.

2024.05.31 00:02 dankwookiee OCT Thru Hike Report May 2024

Finished my thru hike a few days ago. Left Warrenton May 1st and got to Crissey Field May 27th.
Here's some notes. It's mostly cautions, with a few nice notes, so don't be scared off - the trip was absolutely phenomenal. Minus the first weekend I had killer weather. The vistas are unparalleled and the pelicans were so numerous. Saw seals frequently, a handful of whales on the north coast, saw some snowy plovers south of Bandon, bald eagles and osprey plentiful. So much beauty. So much hiking and camping. So many sunsets and forest morning walks.
May 1: Warrenton to Fort Stevens HB Camp
Took the bus from PDX to Warrenton, $20 and got dropped off by the Fred Meyers in Warrenton about 11:40. Hiked up through Hammond and the historic Fort Stevens area to the Jetty Road, up the Jetty Road to the Jetty, down the beach, then inland to the HB camp. If you leave from Warrenton, the Warrenton waterfront trail is a nice way to get close to the Columbia and avoid a good chunk of the road to Fort Stevens.
May 2: Fort Stevens HB to Tillamook Head
Long, smooth beach section. They were closing the beach by Camp Rilea later in the morning for firing drills, I made it through and reached the end just as the soldier in the truck was driving up the beach. Water up at Seltzer Park if you plan on staying at the Ecola shelters. There is a stream down the hill from the shelters but I didn't need to use it. Trails over Clarks Mtn/Tillamook Head were largely good and mud-free, I got there before the rainstorm at the beginning of the month. Watch out for side trails off the main trail that can be misleading.
May 3: Tillamook Head to Nehalem Bay.
I do not recommend doing this in one day. Watch the tides and go around the points (Silver, Humbug, Hug) at a minus tide if you can. There's an area just above the bridge across Arch Cape Creek that makes a good bivouac. I reached that around 1pm and decided to keep going - big mistake especially with the inclement weather starting to hit. The wind and rain absolutely sucked. I got to Nehalem Bay after dark, nearly chilled through. Fortunately Nehalem Bay has a great HB area and plenty of hot water in the showers. Oswald West was fine, north side of the trail going into Cape Falcon is very brushy. I skipped Neahkahnie mountain because of the weather and the time.
May 4: Nehalem Bay to Barview Jetty
NOTE: Old Mill RV Resort in Garibaldi is no longer taking tent campers, at all. They're renovating the tent area into more RV parking.
Jetty Fishery ferry is running as usual, it's a great place. This is the only water crossing I took. The seals on the side of the bay were less enthusiastic about the boat coming across than I was. Non eventful approach to Barview Jetty minus wind and rain. Barview Jetty HB area is nice and I'd love to visit it again under better weather.
May 5: Barview Jetty to Cape Lookout:
NOTE: Boat shuttles will be tricky this year. There is construction on the Tillamook Bay South Jetty that has Bayocean Dike Road closed through a good portion of the north end. The folks at the marina said they'd run boats after memorial day, tide dependent, but that folks taking the boat shuttle might have to prepare for a long wade (quarter mile) due to the how shallow the area available for drop off is.
I took the tracks from Garibaldi into Tillamook, then 131 out to Cape Lookout. It was nice skipping the road, railroad ballast is pretty horrible for walking on and watch out for the rail trestles if it's wet. The tracks were obviously disused due to several small slides that covered them. Be aware you may encounter homeless camping.
May 6: Cape Lookout to Sandbeach
NOTE: Cape Lookout north trail is closed due to washouts and trees on bridges. Have to hike the highway to the top and then you can take the south trail to the beach. Saw a bear cub in the clearcut across from the park entrance - park rangers said he roams alone most of the time and sometimes comes into the park to eat salal. They're monitoring it. South trail was good. Don’t expect to cross Sand Lake Estuary without a pretty low tide.
May 7: Sandbeach to Webb County CG.
Crossed the estuary bright and early with a <1ft tide. Nice morning hike down the beach to Cape Kiwanda and into Pacific City. Made my first grocery visit here for a refill on some blister care and food items. Chester's is good but is a mile away from Webb. I'd given myself some good blisters with the wet feet, railroad ballast walking, and overly long days where I was trying to speed hike road sections. After this point my feet toughened up pretty fast though. Grab a beer at Pelican and watch the sunset if you can and are inclined. Shoutout to the lovely Canadian retirees in their RV who invited me over for some hot cocoa the next morning.
May 8: Webb County to Neskowin Creek RV Resort:
Great day. The road section from Pacific City to 101 isn't bad. The rhododendrons were spectacular. There's a really cute farm stand where HWY 130 forks east from 101. Support them. Winema Road to Winema beach was great. The road walk from Neskowin beach access to Neskowin Creek RV resort was great.
NOTE: If you want to stay at Neskowin Creek RV resort, CALL AHEAD and make a reservation. You can do same day but they'll need a nonrefundable deposit if you're not a member of their parent organization. But it's nice, the showers and laundry were good, the meadow camping was a bit dewy in the morning but comfortable sleeping. It's back from the highway and pretty quiet.
May 9: Neskowin to Devils Lake (Gleneden Beach).
Standout day. Hit the north Rainforest Trail over Cascade Head by 9am and had a cool, beautiful, shady forest climb. South side was much warmer and the salmonberries overgrowing the lower portions of the trail were annoying. Heard rumors about a washout but I think I either missed it or it's been fixed enough. The highway section through Neotsu from the 101-18 junction into Lincoln City suuuucks. Take it slow, walk towards oncoming, and be prepared to step into the ditch frequently.
NOTE: Beverly Beach is closed through end of June. From Devils Lake to the next campground where you can tent camp, South Beach SP, is 30miles. I had time afternoon of May 9, so I hopped the bus to Gleneden Beach and hiked north back to Devils Lake. That knocked out 8 miles, so the next day I got the bus early to Gleneden Beach and hiked south to South Beach. Recommend using the bus to break this section up however best suits you. It's cheap ($2) per ride.
May 10: Gleneden Beach to South Beach
Bus to Gleneden Beach. A few road sections, the powerline trails between Fogarty Creek and Whale Cove are very helpful.
Taking the stairs from Devils Punchbowl to Beverly and Moolack beaches is the way to go. I hit Schooner Point at mid-tide - feet got wet but I was able to get around. Be cautious and shoot for low tides. No highway walking needed through Newport. The mini market right before Lighthouse Drive is really nice. Walking across the Yaquina Bay bridge was a bucket list item for me- so cool. Saw an osprey nest on one of the towers below the bridge. Grab a Dead Guy from Rogue before hiking to South Beach if you're inclined.
May 11: South Beach to Beachside:
Nice beach walk minus short sections through Seal Rock and Waldport. And a short highway section in Seal Rock. There was a locked gate at the end of the beach climbout into Seal Rock - it should have been reopened but not sure. Fish and Chips at Luna Sea are great. Low afternoon tide meant I could hit the beach right away as soon as it started in Waldport. Beachside SP had some lowlying flooded areas and wasn't my favorite HB site but the HB area was dry and sheltered. Close to highway.
May 12: Beachside to Perpetua:
Beautiful walk down into Yachats. Trail walk up to Cape Perpetua after crossing the Yachats River. Caffeinate well at Green Salmon before going up Perpetua - you'll need the boost. Great day. Perpetua CG has a HB site - 29A - find the camp host. I think it was $10. It's a nice site with creek access.
May 13: Perpetua to Carl Washburne
The forest trail to Cummins Creek is great. The road walking between Cummins Creek and Rock Creek CG can do unspeakable things to itself. There are sections where there is neither road shoulder nor a flat surface outside the guardrail. I made it through with much anxiety, cursing, and some slipping on the surface outside the guardrail. The beach section from Rock Creek to Carl Washburne was nice, Rock Creek and Big Creek are kind of rocky and swift but not too deep. Washburne is a nice HB CG, very handy to showers, no power station so charge in bathrooms. There's a resident coyote at Carl Washburne, so just be cautious.
May 14: Carl Washburne to Honeyman
Hobbit trail to Heceta is phenomenal, such a view point if weather is clear. Heceta Tunnel. Walked it. Probably shouldn't have. Roads past it are OK shoulder wise. Baker Beach into Florence very windy. Construction on Rhododendron Drive in Florence - check closures and detours. Highway from Florence to Honeyman wasn't bad. Honeyman HB sites are good, didn't like the sharp pea gravel they surfaced with but it was fine. Find a big rock to drive stakes, or meet a cyclist with a hammer.
May 15: Honeyman to Threemile Lake
Mostly uneventful, hiked under grey skies, not many OHV but then again it was a Wednesday. Beautiful crushed shell beaches. Tahkenitch creek crossing at midtide was sketchy, recommend timing for low tide. Should probably have stopped at Carter Lake or Waxmyrtle. Dune walking is hard. Threemile lake has not many sites by the lake but is pretty.
May 16: Threemile Lake to Umpqua LH
Sparrow Park Road is alright. Watch out for the puddles - you'd think the gravel surface would be hard but no, it's very soft and you'll sink over your ankles. Took a halfmile detour to Sugar Shack in Reedsport before hitting the laundromat (nice laundromat) and safeway. Highway stretch into Winchester Bay isn't bad.
May 17: Rest Day at Umpqua LH.
Destroyed a pizza at Bedrocks and went on a tour of the lighthouse. Watched the pelicans diving into the bay at sunset.
May 18: Umpqua to Horsfall Beach.
Lots of OHV in this area unsurprisingly but the beach walk was nice and could mostly ignore the OHV. I was thinking of camping at Bluebill but when I got to the beach exit I decided to head south a short ways and camp just off the beach. Worth it. Especially when I went past Bluebill next day and found out it was closed.
May 19: Horsfall to Sunset Bay.
As soon as I left the beach the bugs were after me. The road past the campgrounds was flooded over about 6" deep for several hundred feet in one section. Bluebill CG was closed (as mentioned) and I could see the entire area was basically still a swamp and hadn't dried out yet for the year. Hiking road through North Bend/Coos Bay was uneventful. Mom's Kitchen was a great breakfast, even if the folks there seemed a little unsure about "person with backpack." It's tiny and tight quarters so if they had been full, I wouldn't have tried to squeeze myself in. Don't miss the Walmart or Big 5 if you need something. Most of the road walk to Charleston is on a nice bike path off the main road.
Sunset Bay is one of the nicest campgrounds, and the beach/bay can't be beat for beauty.
May 20: Sunset Bay to Bullards.
I took the Cape Arago route, I think I missed the easy crossover from the pack trail to the logging road because I had to bushwhack. I don't recommend bushwhacking. Find the easy crossover that I missed. The PCT hikers that were visiting the OCT said they found the easy crossover. Passed a Caterpillar trimming brush on the logging road, operator didn't seem happy to see me, the PCT hikers reported that he lectured them about being there. I couldn't find clear information from the Weyerhauser Recreation site afterwards. Seven Devils Road is steep and gravelly and I grumbled a lot through it.
May 21: Bullards to Floras Lake.
The bridge into Bandon didn't feel too sketchy. Try to get to the beach at low tide. I'd have loved to have primitive camped in the New River area, but didn't have water. I checked out the river but it looked brown and sluggish, with goose droppings all over the bank and cow pasture upstream, so I had zero interest in filtering. Beach south of New River access is steep and soft, wear gaiters if you have them. I didn't. New River crossing at a 2.5' low tide were just above knee deep but I'm 6'2" so factor accordingly. There's a very shallow crossing just past Bandon and a main crossing a couple miles north of Floras Lake. Floras Lake CG has a small laundry facility and pay showers.
May 22: Floras Lake to Cape Blanco.
Blacklock Point is amazing, take the scenic detours. The Sixes River … you can cross it at a 3' low tide but it won't be fun. I think I crossed it around a 4' tide. It was up to my armpits (again, 6'2"). This was after waiting an hour and a half, I arrived when it was uncrossable. I'd shoot for a tide of 1' or less but I made it with my pack dry by holding it above my shoulders. The seals on the other side laughed at my initial attempts to cross and then left after I kept trying. Cape Blanco has another really nice HB camp.
May 23: Cape Blanco to Humbug Mountain.
Elk River was knee deep a bit after low tide, but it was a minus tide. Could be waist deep or more at a 1-2ft tide. Easy beach walk into Port Orford, a short highway section between Port Orford and the old 101 section. Lots of pelican flights, and saw Bonaparte Gulls on the beach by Port Orford which was cool. Along the old 101 section, I started seeing foxgloves in addition to the wild irises and lupines I'd been going by. There were some good viewpoints off this trail as well. Humbug Mtn HB is kinda rocky and hard to drive stakes but is also tucked away and private feeling. The highway noise was real - bring earplugs.
May 24: Humbug Mtn to dunes camp south of Gold Beach.
Highway section not too bad, but watch out for the areas where the highway has slid and there's been some recent construction. Go to Arizona Beach, shoot for low tide so you can exit out past Sisters Rocks. Otherwise you will not be able to make it all the way down Arizona Beach. Ophir to Nesika a nice beach walk. Nesika past Geisel monument and over another old 101 section was pretty. Otter point to Gold Beach was uneventful. There are some good spots between BA 179 and Cape Sebastian to dunes camp.
May 25: Dunes s of Gold Beach to Boardman Corridor.
Cape Sebastian was great, the viewpoints north are spectacular and the shore pines south are so pretty. Watch for poison oak. Meyers Beach North was OK, I didn't enjoy the south section past Pistol River, very windy with driving sand.
Carry water, be prepared to filter. I filtered from the creek below Lola Lake at the end of Meyers Beach. Plan to flag stop a bus or have someone shuttle you. It's too far and too difficult of a hike to go from Pistol River to Harris Beach in a day.
May 26: Boardman Corridor to Harris Beach.
Only toilets are at Arch Rock wayside. Have a water filter handy.
Most of the trails through the Corridor are pretty good. Exceptions: the exit off the south end of Whaleshead Beach is tough. The first several hundred feet are less like a path and more like a super uneven deer path, if that. Right next to the creek, it's basically just little toeholds chipped into the side of the hill. There is still a washout further up the hill, it's not awful, but had to grab the trees around it to steady myself across that area.
May 27: Harris Beach to Crissey Field:
Uneventful. Low tide made it easy to go from McVay Rock to California on the beach. The Winchuck River was an easy crossing at low tide. It was pretty exciting to hit the border and then check into the visitor center!
Overall: a grand time. I'd love to do it again over 40 days or so, with some intentional rests built in and breaking up the longer days. Example: lodgings in seaside (International Hostel?) would have broken up the Fort Stevens to Tillamook/Ecola day nicely, splitting Ecola to Nehalem is just the smart choice, and Garibaldi to Cape Lookout should be 2 days as well.
Hope this helps! Feel free to ask questions about specific sections or the hike in general.
