Pluckeye is an Internet filter for people who want help with self-control. It optionally lets you choose a time delay in advance. If you've set a time delay, and you want to disable Pluckeye or to make its settings more lenient, you must first wait until the delay passes. Pluckeye works on Windows, Linux, Mac OS, and Android.

2024.06.05 05:31 Groundon3 Paragons affecting BADs and Bosses

When it comes to Paragons, I feel that they should be, for the most part, have more powerful effects than their standard upgrades. This can be seen in already created Paragons: the Navarch’s Hook-in ability can pull in BADs, the Master Builder can stun MOAB-class Bloons, the Siege Core’s Final Strike launches 3 missiles and leaves puddles of bloontonium radiation, etc. However, there are a number of additional effects that, if directly upgraded, would be able to affect BADs and bosses. The problem is, these are the most powerful Bloons in BTD6 and currently can’t be affected by most of these. Directly upgrading these effects to affect BADs and bosses would completely remove the point of these Bloons, but completely preventing some of these effects would make these future Paragons seem useless or even pointless. As such, I’d like to throw my two cents. This post could have been given either the Suggestion or Discussion flair, but I chose the latter as a lot of this has speculation and personal thoughts. I really would like to hear what everyone and especially what Ninja Kiwi thinks of all this. Mainly so I can fine-tune any future ideas/suggestions I share and get a better picture of what Ninja Kiwi’s views are.

Slowing

First and foremost, if the future Glue Gunner and Ice Monkey Paragons can’t slowdown BADs and bosses, the type of Bloons they are designed for, they will feel useless and not worth building. As such, I feel like these Paragons should be able to slowdown BADs and bosses but in different amounts.
Basically, the Glue Gunner Paragon should be the most effective when it comes to slowing things down. As such, BADs should be slowed down by 15% and bosses by 10% while glued. The Ice Monkey Paragon should be near as strong, slowing BADs by 10% and bosses by 5%. For BADs after being frozen, they will be affected by a form of Permafrost that slows their speed by 5% permanently. Please note, this permanent 5% does not stack with the standard Ice Monkey Paragon’s slowdown; its 10% slowed while frozen and 5% when thawed and out of the Paragons freezing range. So if both the Glue Gunner and Ice Monkey Paragons are in play, BADs are slowed by 25% and bosses by 15%.
However, I want to throw in another slowdown that would only affects BADs: the Ascended Shadow’s passive. Currently, it only reduces all BADs HP by 25% and does not affect their speed. But as I stated at the start, I feel like Paragons effects should be upgrades from the standard upgrades for the most part. As such, I feel the Ascended Shadow’s passive slowdown should affect BADs but only slows then down by 5%. So in total, a BAD will be slowed down by 30% if currently glued by the Glue Gunner Paragon, frozen by the Ice Monkey Paragon, and the Ascended Shadow is in play. Do note, that once the glue wears off and the BAD thaws, it will only be slowed down by 10% due to Permafrost and the Ascended Shadow. As for bosses, they will be slowed down by 15% while glued and frozen and move at normal speed when the glue wears off and thaws, no Permafrost.

Stun

Bosses, no. Bosses should never be affected by stuns. They are the strongest of all the Bloons and can’t be stopped, even briefly, and will constantly inch their way to the exit.
BADs on the other hand, I think should be affected by stuns but with two major caveats: 1. BADs can only be stunned for 0.1 - 0.5 seconds and 2. can’t be stunned from the same source again for 5 - 8 seconds. Currently, there are no Paragons that I would consider to be able to stun BADs, so I’ll just speculate for future Paragons based on what the tower currently does:
Bomb Shooter Paragon - Standard attack [Bloon Crush]
Sniper Monkey Paragon - Standard attack [Maim MOAB and above]
Mortar Monkey Paragon - Ability [Pop and Awe]
Beast Handler Paragons - Ability [Tyrannosaurus Rex and above]
BADs are the second strongest Bloon there is just behind bosses. I believe they should be slightly susceptible to things that bosses would be completely immune to but still strong enough to shrug it off quickly and resist it for a short time.
However, if most people feel that stunning BADs for any amount of time feels either broken or goes against the idea of BADs, I’ll suggest a new effect for them and bosses called Dazed. This status considers the Bloon to be stunned but it keeps moving. It would last for 1 second for bosses and 2 seconds for BADs. Basically it just gives towers that get a bonus against stunned Bloons that bonus to BADs and bosses.

Knockback

No. BADs and Bosses are unstoppable forces and knockback should never affect them. You can slow them down, you can stun BADs for an extremely brief amount of time, but they can never be made to retreat in any form. They will make their way to the exit if you don’t pop them.

Instakills

Never for bosses, it removes the whole point of them. Plus, as I stated earlier, they are the strongest type of Bloon; they’re too strong to be taken down that easily.
For BADs, it should be very limited. Currently, only the Navarch can instantly destroy BADs with its Hook-in ability 2 times per round. So just like with stun, I’ll speculate on future Paragons ability to instakill BADs based on current tower upgrades:
Super Monkey Paragon - Black hole ability [Legend of the Night]
Alchemist Paragon - Shrink Potion Ability [Bloon Master Alchemist] (Heavy speculation, but I feel the shrink potion from the Bloon Master Alchemist would work best as an ability that targets the strongest, non-boss Bloon and turns it into a Red Bloon and any other Bloons in splash radius. 2 uses per round, BADs use 50% of the potion’s pierce no matter what degree so only 4 BADs per round can be shrunk)
Master Builder - Trap, BADs up to 50,000 - 500,000 RBE depending on degree [Bloon Trap and above] (I already posted an idea for a Mater Builder rework a while ago, but I have a second idea that I will post at a later time)
Beast Handler Paragon - Aquatic beast drag, Bloons up to 500,000 RBE [Great White Shark and above]
All these methods are quite limited: the Beast Handler Paragon's Aquatic beast drag can only drag any Bloon up to a certain RBE to the watery depths, the Super Monkey Paragon's is a last resort, the Alchemist Paragon can only use its ability 2 times per round and only affects 4 BADs max, and the Master Builder's trap can only absorb BADs to a certain RBE. I didn't mention it, but the Master Builder's trap takes 10 seconds to be replaced once filled or the target reticle is moved, further limiting it. I do have more about this trap but, like I mentioned earlier, I'll share that in another post.
TLDR: BADs and bosses can be slowed by 30% and 15% respectfully. Bosses should never be able to be stunned but BADs can be stunned but only for 0.1 - 0.5 seconds and can't be stunned from the same source for 5 - 8 seconds after recovering. BADs and bosses should never be affected by knockback in any way. Bosses can't be affected by instakills and BADs can be instakilled in very limited ways. See each section for exact details and sources of each effect.
And that should cover everything that I can think of. Please note that any specific numbers listed can easily be tweaked if they seem too high or low. If anyone has questions about any of this, you’re more than welcome to ask. As I stated at the start, if anyone from Ninja Kiwi is reading this, I would love to know you and the rest of the teams thoughts on this. Thanks for reading and keep being awesome.

Just a beginner
Hey fellow wheelers, this is only like the 5th ride I’ve taken my new pint on and I’m ecstatic! Was wondering if y’all have any tips for terrain changes as I seem to lose my footing slightly and immediately my balance. Other than that this thing is incredible.

2024.06.05 01:41 LGTYQZ In-Depth review: Bloons Card Storm (first look beta)

Hi all, LGTYQZ here! I've played a half decent amount of card games and have been a formerly prominent competitive PvZ Heroes player and LOVE bloons, so I decided to give the beta a look.

The Concept

Honestly overall it's been great stuff so far—there's a core balance that I find familiar in card games that seems to be in the underlying systems here:
and then figuring out how to play is dependent on balancing both of these, which I'm a big fan of. I also like the storm as a way to prevent full stall strats from taking over.

The UX

I like the overall layout of the user interface & I like the 3D viewed-at-an-angle art look pretty well! That said, I came across a couple issues at first:

The Art

The (finished) art so far is amazing! The 3D models & animations (again, that are finished) work really well, and I love the little details in the monkey's expressions and their card art. In particular I really like the art of the single yellow bloon in the middle of the street and all the monkeys freaking out over it. There's some glaringly unfinished stuff (mostly how slowly blimps attack and how Quincy's model tilts back at a constant in order to activate one of his abilities), but it's to be expected out of a first look, and I'm sure the team will continue to polish it as time goes on.
Now for the real boogeyman:

The Gameplay/Balance

Before posting this, I saw a post talking about how bland the bloons are and some ideas to make them more interesting. Me personally, I don't really care too much as again, this is a first look and there are still so many canon bloons that could be designed around. I'm sure there'll be more complex & interesting bloon, monkey, and spell designs in the future.
A lot of the towers/bloons have a relatively even balance with each other, so I'll only really be talking about the main issues that I've found during my 3-4 hours or so of gameplay.
I don't think any of these will be super long term challenges however, except for maybe early Banana Farm disrupting the balance between immediate and long-term value since sending bloons functions as both effective offense and defense. It's a bit difficult to go full defensive as sending bloons is the best way to gain immediate value, but I like that tradeoff as I'm having a lot of fun sending rush after rush to eventually overwhelm my opponent. It's a bit of a change from something like BTD6 or Battles 2 though, where the towers are doing the majority of the bloon-popping work.
I figure the strength of a lot of these is also subject to change soon, so we'll see what the final version is like.
Overall, great game so far and excited to see the future of BCS (better call saul)!

2024.06.05 00:25 ralo_ramone An Otherworldly Scholar [LitRPG, Isekai] - Chapter 124

Chapter 124 Elincia and I watched the rest of the first round of eliminations from the comfort of a padded seat next to Prince Adrien's throne. In front of us, and hidden from the spectators beneath us, there was a board full of the most exotic delicacies: grilled meats, bowls of fragrant nuts and dried fruits, fish cubes floating in different sauces, small roasted birds, steaming loaves of bread, and bowls of fresh fruit. A servant handed me a small plate with an even smaller metallic toothpick. I was at a loss for a moment, but Elincia poked a piece of meat with the little toothpick and brought it to her mouth, shielding her dress with the small plate.
I imitated her. Despite being the Governess in a town far from important urban centers, Elincia was a master of table manners. Mister Lowell had prepared the orphans to rub shoulders with the upper ranks of Farcrest society, so they knew how to handle themselves in a situation like this. I pinched a piece of grilled meat, and a wave of familiar flavors hit me.
I must’ve put a face on because Prince Adrien laughed.
“Surprisingly good or surprisingly bad? Which one is it? ” Prince Adrien raised his cup of wine—a shiny silver cup with golden decorations.
“It’s good, perfect. It just reminded me of my homeland,” I said, appealing to [Awareness] to help me distinguish each flavor. It wasn’t a tall order, but I didn’t want to fumble my words in front of the prince. “Salt, black pepper, rosemary, and a hint of oregano and turmeric, if I’m not mistaken.”
Prince Adrien looked at the old sommelier out of the corner of his eye, and the man returned a barely noticeable nod. I couldn’t help but feel as if Prince Adrien was sizing me up in some unspoken way.
“Have you ever tasted black pepper and turmeric, Miss Governess?” Prince Adrien asked. His exchange with the sommelier passed almost unnoticed as the timing of the conversation was barely interrupted.
Elincia shook her head. “Black pepper is too expensive for a commoner to buy. Even wealthy merchants only buy it for commerce. It’s my first time hearing about turmeric. I think I can taste it, though. The food is delicious.”
“I’m pleased to hear that the food has met your expectations,” Prince Adrien said, picking a second piece of meat.
I couldn’t help but feel I wasn’t off the hook yet.
“You are an interesting fellow, Robert. For a caretaker, you have quite the palate. You don’t seem used to interacting with nobility, yet you have better manners than some people in this room,” the Prince said, glancing at an old baron who stuffed his little plate with a leaning tower of fish and sauce. “When Tauron told me about a local orphanage with enough kids of age to participate in the tournament, I expected something different, Robert. Farcrest is a tiny Skeeth pen for someone like you, no offense,” he added, looking at Elincia.
“No offense taken. I have avoided telling Rob how much he clashes with the environment here so he wouldn’t flee to the capital,” Elincia pointed out with a polite bow. She carried on the conversation surprisingly well for someone with the [Bad Reputation] title.
Prince Adrien laughed, although anyone could interpret his words as an invitation to work in the capital. I wondered if he still wanted me to be his Spymaster.
“I appreciate the compliment, Prince Adrien, but I don’t understand why are you telling me this,” I threaded carefully.
Prince Adrien hadn’t offered me a deal without running a background check. He knew I was from far away, and I had landed in this place after a portal incident. That was why Prince Adrien decided to employ me; I lacked any allegiance other than to the orphanage. He knew, however, that I desired to remain at the orphanage.
“Relax, I’m not trying to poach you,” Prince Adrien laughed between sips of wine. “Contrary to all the rumors and whispers, I didn’t kill my brothers and uncles. Before becoming the heir, I was just the middle child of a powerful family, which meant I got the privilege to travel the continent, visit faraway lands, and meet interesting people. Listening to stories is kind of a hobby of mine, but after traveling so much, it is hard to find new ones. People are more similar than we want to admit.”
I somewhat agreed with Prince Adrien. I hadn’t kept track of how many times one of my students showed me a video of their orange cat causing feline mischief, but it was more than I could count with my hands. Yet every one of my students was unique.
“So, what’s your story?” Prince Adrien asked, glancing across the arena to the pavilion where my kids chatted with Team Nara and Istvan Kiln.
“I was an educator before arriving in Farcrest, so it only seemed logical to continue teaching on this side of the portal. Chance wanted me to meet Elincia before I could learn about the Imperial Library,” I said.
Prince Adrien nodded as Lord Herran's illegitimate sons and daughters comfortably beat a small team from the Jorn Dukedom. I naively believed our team would have the best point difference, but I was wrong. Team Herran scored fifteen points over their four matches.
Prince Adrien gave a half-hearted applause after the Master of Ceremonies announced the end of the fight. He seemed more interested in my story because he turned around on his throne to face me as soon as the ceremony ended.
“Interesting. You knew about the Imperial Library, yet you decided to stay here. Any other Scholar of your capabilities would have decided to go to the Library and pursue a Prestige Class like Sage, Tactician, or Tinkerer,” Prince Adrien scratched his face with a pensive expression. “Considering your decision to stay and the number of titles you have, I can only assume there must be schools for commoners with a sizable number of students in your homeland.”
Prince Adrien's assumptions hit the nail on the head, which was strange considering the kingdom's educational philosophy: find the natural talent and have them level up as much as humanly possible. There was a reason why Holst paid so much attention to Firana but barred Ilya from attending his classes. Firana had the traits, the surname, and the natural disposition towards fencing. Those three characteristics were passed on to her by her family. In comparison, Ilya’s talents didn’t appear in her Character Sheet, so Holst hadn’t bothered looking for them.
“Am I correct?” Prince Adrien asked.
“Y-yes. We have schools for citizens with hundreds of students,” I replied, not using ‘thousands’ to avoid revealing the city's actual size.
Prince Adrien smiled. “I’m glad your nation is nowhere near my domain.”
Public education required tons of resources and logistics, but I wasn’t sure if that was what Prince Adrien meant.
Before I could ask why, the Master of Ceremonies announced the next match. The Imperial Academy cadets led by Holst against Lord Gairon’s team. I left my plate on the table and focused on the arena. This match was the first and only high-profile combat of the day. Lord Gairon, Lord Osgiria, and Lord Herran were among the three great dukes, and the Imperial Academy was the royal family's elite armed forces.
The nobles around us stopped eating.
“The loser of the fight will have their reputation smeared, while the winner will get all the credibility,” Prince Adrien whispered, letting his cup on the table and leaning forward.
“Preceptor Holst is confident the cadets will win the tournament,” I pointed out as the Imperial Academy team entered the arena: three humans, one half-elf, and a harpy with yellow and gold feathers dressed in black uniforms. None of them seemed thrilled about being there. I remembered what Holst had told me. They were about to be expelled.
“We will see,” Prince Adrien replied.
I wondered why the Imperial Academy hadn’t sent their best cadets. If I had to guess, it was some sort of political mess regarding the high ranks of the Academy not liking the current heir to the throne. I was curious, but my sense of self-preservation was stronger this time. I preferred to stay away from any extra political intrigue.
Both teams met in the center, and the aides carried the System Shrine Fragment wrapped in its copper nest. [Awareness] helped me distinguish the diminutive System prompts. Lord Gairon’s team was a mix of martial and magical classes.
Knight Lv.9 Berserker Lv.9 Duelist Lv.6 Champion Lv.7 Aquamancer Lv.9
A shiver ran down my spine. Those were a set of solid classes. Berserker, Champion, and Aquamancer were Advanced Classes, while Knight and Duelist were Basic Classes with outstanding attributes.
The Imperial Cadets weren’t as surprising.
Sentinel Lv.6 Fencer Lv.3 Brawler Lv.4 Monk Lv.2 Illusionist Lv.1
The cadet with the highest level was the harpy. She was only level six.
“Are they at risk of being expelled because they didn’t level up enough?” I asked.
Elincia told me that people usually reach level ten during the first year after obtaining their classes. Reaching level twenty took three to five years. Then came the dreaded first soft cap, which slowed the leveling process dramatically. It had taken Elincia about eight years to reach level 24, but she had to split his time between the kids, gathering materials, and advancing her class.
The cadets seemed far from the desired level.
“I’m prohibited from revealing the Academy methods,” Prince Adrien said, scratching his jawline. “But… I wanted to reward you for your help during the feast. After all, the dukes decided to stay at farcrest because of your… investigative skills.”
It wasn’t hard to read between the lines; Prince Adrien begged me to ask. I wondered if the information was as valuable as adding a Transmuter to the ranks of the royalist faction.
“If Your Majesty is so kind as to indulge me, as a Scholar, I would love to know more about the Imperial Academy,” I said.
Prince Adrien grinned.
“I can’t say no after such a contribution to the royal family affairs. The Imperial Academy methods are a state secret, and cadets are subject to a Silence Hex for it, so don’t go around broadcasting it,” he said as Holst and Lord Gairon chose the pairs for the match. “During the first year, cadets are forbidden from leveling up. These cadets aren’t at risk of expulsion because of their level but their performance.”
The Prince fell silent. Despite the seemingly ordinary method, the puzzle pieces created a clear image in my brain. I understood why Prince Adrien was interested in Zaon and not Firana. The fact that cadets were forbidden from leveling up wasn’t the crux of the matter, but what happened while they remained at a low level.
I smiled.
Any crafting and support class would understand it instantly. There were two ways of improving one’s class: leveling and cultivation. Leveling improved stats, which for non-combat classes were pathetically low. Cultivation, on the other hand, improved the mastery of the class. For combatants, high stats reflected their combat prowess, so leveling was everything. Cultivation was an afterthought, considering they could brute-force almost any opponent with enough levels.
What I did with the kids was the same as what the Imperial Academy did with the first-year cadets: cultivation. My heart rushed inside my chest. It made all the sense of the world. Commoners wouldn’t bother grabbing a sword before getting a class because everyone believed it was a waste of time. The System wouldn’t give them a better class because the measure was the content of their character, not their previous skills.
Only a select group had the mindset to grind their skills to perfection and be accepted at the Imperial Academy. It took a specific personality type to achieve such a feat: obsessed, prideful, unwavering, much like Sir Janus. It was only logical that nobles made up almost all cadets; they were expected to perform to a certain level because of their upbringing.
Beliefs were stronger than more people wanted to admit.
That little piece of information was worth more than all the gold Ginz and I had been funneling out of the noble’s pockets. It made sense for the royal family to keep it for themselves. That way, they could have a monopoly over the best warriors in the kingdom.
“That’s Lord Gairon’s son. Esteffen, sixteen years old, level nine Knight,” Prince Adrien pointed at the arena with his toothpick.
Despite the cold day, Esteffen Gairon was a tall, muscular boy wearing a short blue and yellow robe and sandals. He had curly blonde hair, a turned-up nose, and perfectly aligned white teeth. He wielded a round shield in one hand and a short sword in the other. I couldn’t tell if he wanted me to buy war bonds, join the Alliance, or the Boy Scouts.
The Harpy Cadet stood with the boring expression of a teenager who was ordered to assist with a social event or a family gathering. The all-black uniform didn’t help her to appear any less cranky. I couldn’t help but see a grown-up version of Shu, with her long sunflower blonde hair and golden feathers. Her slender frame matched her weapon choice: a leather shield, a spear, and a short sword in her belt. She rolled her shoulders and stretched her wings as the Master of Ceremonies finished with the formalities.
In the VIP box, the conversation died down, and the nobles focused on the arena. Nobody moved a muscle despite the Knight class being way better than the Sentinel class.
“Fight!” The Master of Ceremonies' voice echoed.
The Harpy Cadet reacted first. She grabbed the spear like a javelin and threw it, the tip gleaming with energy. The spell was so fast I couldn't even notice the moment she channeled her mana. Esteffen raised his shield, but the spear cut through the metal like fabric. He tried to pull out the spear, but it was stuck. He had to get rid of the shield altogether. In an instant, the Harpy Cadet unsheathed her sword and, with a powerful wing beat, pounced over Esteffen.
Before Esteffen could raise his guard, he was two barriers down. The boy’s expression was tainted with fear as the Harpy Cadet continued with her attack. Her style was flawless. There was no delay between her thoughts and movements; it seemed like she let her body move by itself.
Not even Esteffen’s Knight skills were capable of saving him. He summoned a floating [Sacred Sword] and [Sacred Shield], skills similar to my mana blades and shield, giving him three different offensive and defensive options. The Harpy Cadet remained unfazed, dancing around the spells without losing a single barrier.
The nobles were speechless. Only Prince Adrien and the army generals seemed to be enjoying the fight inside the VIP box. There was a reason why Imperial Knights had a quasi-mythical reputation. The difference was overwhelming.
“Esteffen Gairon doesn’t have it,” Prince Adrien sighed. “He will grow to be a Sacred Knight like his father, but he will ultimately be a level-slave.”
The kid wasn’t bad, but the Harpy Cadet was leagues better. I even doubted I was rival enough for her. Other than the piercing shot at the beginning of the fight, the girl hadn’t used a single skill, but the combat was utterly one-sided.
One by one, Esteffen's barriers fell. The Harpy used her wings to jump back and forth and keep her balance during the swift exchanges. She even used them as extra support when Esteffen went on a gambling lunge against her face. The whole fight didn’t last more than a minute or two, but by the end, Esteffen was covered in dust and sweat.
“Is she really at risk of being expelled?” I asked with a trembling voice.

The sun painted the sky in hues of blue and violet as Timmy and I entered the school, our arms carefully balancing plates of cookies. My bushy tail flicked in anticipation, after everyone eats these, they’ll have to be our friends.
"Look Tessi!" Timmy exclaimed, rushing over to her and holding the cookies up for her to see. Her colors changed with surprise and alarm.
"Hi Tessi!" I called out, flicking my tail in greeting. I approached her more slowly, showing off the cookies we had spent all claw making.
"G-good morning, w-what are those?" Tessi replied, her voice was nervous for some reason. "We made cookies," Timmy said proudly, "They’re for snack time!" She seemed to relax a bit, her skin settled into a more natural color. "They smell…” she took a deep breath, “...wonderful.”
She was a little confused. Of course they smell good, cookies are the best!
"Thanks!" Timmy said proudly. "You two better get going, you don’t want to be late,” mom said. “Bye, Terla! Bye, Mom!" Timmy called out to our moms.
"Have a great day, kids!" Mary and mom waved as they left, each receiving a farewell tail wave from Tessi. "Hurry along now, you don't have much time before class starts."
As soon as we entered the classroom, Reesa dashed to stand in front of us. She took the plate of cookies from Timmy’s hands and peered under the plastic at them suspiciously.
"What are these?" she asked suspiciously, her talons clicking on the floor.
"Uh, they're chocolate chip cookies," Timmy stammered, looking nervous.
"And do they have any...flesh?"
"Eww no! That’s gross." Timmy recoiled from Reesa. She must not know, Timmy eats plants just like me.
Reesa looked like she was about to interrogate him further when Zoben strode over. His antlers cast long shadows on the floor as he took the plates from Reesa with a gentle smile.
"Thank you, Lidi and Timmy," he said kindly. "Now, both of you should take your seats." He placed the plates on the window sill, high up so no one could reach them, not even Suko. "Everyone, Timmy and Lidi have brought us treats to share during snack time."
I felt my chest swell with pride as our classmates' cheered. Even Reesa calmed down a little bit, her feathers started to settle. As we took our seats, I couldn't help but feel happy about the special surprise we had planned for our friends.
[Advance timestamp 2 hours]
"Okay, everyone," Zoben announced after the claw's lesson. "Time for recess! Line up."
We all cheered and made our way outside to the playground. The air was filled with laughter as we played with the soft blocks, climbed on the platforms, and ran around.
While I was playing Connect 4 with Yovit and Timmy, Caeven called out to everyone, "Hey, look at this!" He held up a piece of plastic wrap that had been blowing around the playground. We all gathered around him to examine it, and I realized it was the same wrap that had covered our cookies.
"Someone must have been eating the cookies!" I shouted.
“We should investigate like Giddi Gojid and solve this mystery.” Suweeqa suggested. We all flicked our tails and ears in agreement, excited by the idea of solving a mystery.
"Let's split up and search for clues," Yovit said, climbing onto Timmy's shoulder. As we split up into groups, Timmy asked, “Who’s Giddi Gojid?” Yovit happily told him about the TV show, how Giddi would solve mysteries using his wits and keen senses. I wasn’t paying much attention, I was looking for clues.

Suko and I followed not too far from Timmy. We had to keep an eye on the predator to keep the herd safe. As we followed him, we kept our eyes peeled for clues. Finally, near the wall next to our classroom, Suko spotted some crumbs on Timmy's shoes.
"Hey, everyone!" I called out, feeling triumphant. "Suko found something!"
“Us too,” someone called.
“We found a stick!” Idean shouted.
“We found a clue too!” Renonus said, as his group joined us.
Everyone gathered around to examine the clues and as I expected, Timmy’s group didn’t have any clues.
Suweeqa took charge. “Taifui, what did your herd find?”
“We found a hole in the sand. Maybe the thief built a sand tower to steal the cookie!” she responded enthusiastically.
Caeven’s ears flattened against his head. “Sorry, that was me. I was digging in the sand pit.”
Idean was the next to speak, he could barely contain himself. “You were close, but it wasn’t a sand tower, it was a block tower. We found one of the soft blocks where it wasn’t supposed to be.”
Eekseh and Cla’ki gave their affirmations to back him up.
“That’s not possible,” Ibesi contested, “I was playing with all the blocks with Lailae, Joamuk, and Syvett.”
“Hmm if it wasn’t a tower with the sand or a tower with the blocks,” Suweeqa wondered aloud. “ how did the thief build a tower to steal the cookies?”
“Maybe they used boxes,” Yovit offered.
“Or they could have used chairs.” Belarn suggested.
“No! They must have used a stick!” Renonus declared loudly. “I think they used the stick to peel away the plastic and knocked a cookie off the plate and caught it and then used the stick to put the plastic back, but it wasn’t good so the plastic blew away and that’s how Caeven caught them.”
We all looked at Renonus for a minute trying to picture the thief doing as he said.
“Where’s the stick?” Marq asked.
Renonus waved his tentacles, “I don’t know. Maybe they still have it.”
Growing frustrated I couldn’t help but point out the obvious. "You are all missing the most important clue. Timmy must've eaten the cookie! Look at these crumbs by his shoes."
Everyone looked at Timmy’s shoes and saw there were a lot of crumbs on his shoe. Even more than before.
"Nuh-uh!" Lidi countered, her ear twitching. "He was with Marq, Yovit, and me the whole time. And he's not tall enough to reach the cookies anyway."
"Then why are there crumbs in his shoes?" I demanded.
"Maybe the thief put them there on purpose," Joamuk suggested thoughtfully.
"Why would they do that?" Ibesi questioned, her large venlil eyes filled with curiosity.
"Who knows, but the clue is right there. The crumbs are on Timmy’s shoes. He must have eaten them." I said.
Suko wiggled his ears in agreement. “He must have used his predator powers.”
“That’s dumb,” Lailae snorted. “Predators don’t have super powers.”
“They do too, my mom said they could take over your mind just by looking at you. She said humans are bad.” Syvett added, giving Timmy a nervous look.
Lidi swished her tail angrily, “Your mom is dumb. Humans make cookies and cookies are the best thing ever so your mom is wrong.”
"Wait a minute," Timmy piped up, interrupting Syvett’s retort. He looked at me with narrow eyes, "You can fly, Suela! You are the only one who could've gotten the cookies!"
"Hey!" Suko jumped in defensively. "Suela and I were together the whole time. Besides, junior exterminators don't steal from the herd!"
Suko was a good friend. I didn’t want to admit I couldn’t fly yet. He knew I couldn’t fly but knew just how to show the predator was lying. And he didn’t have to let everyone know I couldn’t fly to do it.
We all stared at each other for a moment, unsure of what to think. The wind rustled through the playground as I pondered the mystery. Suko proved Timmy was wrong but how could I prove Timmy took the cookie? And why would he leave crumbs on his shoes? As Giddi Gojid would say, every clue mattered—even the small ones. Was he just a messy eater?
As the accusations began to fly back and forth, it felt like we would never solve the cookie mystery. Then, just when it seemed like Timmy would get away with it, Wulinka shouted, "Look!" His hoof pointed toward the roof of our school.
We all followed his gaze and gasped collectively as we saw a flowerbird perched on the edge of the roof, happily munching on the stolen cookie. Belarn yelled and we all turned our eyes to the windowsill where the plate of cookies sat, now swarmed by a flock of thieving birds pecking away at the treats.
"Hey! Those are ours!" I couldn't help but shout, starting a noisy clamor as the rest of my classmates joined in. The commotion drew Zoben's attention, and he galloped over to us, shooing the birds away with his striped snout and small antlers.
"Wait a second," Zoben said, raising a hoof to his chin, "What happened to the plastic wrap that was covering these cookies?"
"Someone took it off!" Cla’ki said, his antennae quivering with indignation.
"But...who?" Renonus asked, looking around at our group suspiciously.
Before anyone could start pointing fingers again, Ressa returned from her lunch break, a half-eaten cookie in her claws. Her bright blue feathers and vibrant yellow beak made her impossible to miss. The playground went silent, all eyes fixed on her.
"Ressa!" Zoben exclaimed, clearly surprised. "You're the one who took off the plastic wrap?"
"Of course," she replied calmly, finishing the cookie like she was really hungry. "I needed to make sure the human hadn't tampered with the treats."
"Those birds stole some of our cookies!" Yovit cried out, her tiny Dossur arms waving wildly.
"Settle down, everyone," Ressa said in her strict tone. "I apologize for not noticing the birds earlier. However, I stand by my decision to check the treats."
"Alright," Zoben said with a warm tail wave, while he tried not to glare at Reesa. "How about we have snack early today? Then you can all enjoy your cookies before naptime."
Cheers erupted from the class as Zoben began to hand out the remaining cookies, his striped hooves careful not to squish them. I wasn’t sure if I should eat the predator treat but then I saw everyone else eating the cookies and they looked really happy.
Even Reesa ate one, so it can’t be bad right?
As I savored each bite of my cookie, I couldn't help but think about why predators would make something so good and amazing. I would have to ask dad. After naptime. And another cookie.

2024.06.04 23:45 onewatt Ideas for how to get the repetition out of prayers, get more power in. With examples from the Book of Mormon. :)

Once I watched a teacher instruct teenagers to chant the word “pots.” They shouted, “Pots, pots, pots, pots, pots.”
Then the teacher asked, “What do you do at a green light?”
“Stop!” everyone shouted.
The teacher laughed and said, “That’s why there are so many accidents with teenage drivers.”
The teacher then pointed out that mindlessly chanting, “pots, pots, pots” (which is “stop” spelled backward) had primed the students to say “stop,” even though it was obviously the wrong answer. If the students had taken time to think, they would have said something different. He then asked, “Are you just chanting in your prayers, or do you really stop to think about what you are saying?”
This question gave me pause. At times I have found myself slipping into prayer routines where I just say the same things and don’t put effort into meaningful prayer. As I pondered on how I could improve the quality of my prayers, I decided to see how people prayed in the Book of Mormon. I was surprised to find that in addition to teaching about prayer, the Book of Mormon also gives many examples of prayer.
I found several patterns as I studied the prayers offered in the Book of Mormon. And as I’ve reflected on my own experiences with prayer, I have realized that my most powerful prayers have followed these same patterns. For me, five Book of Mormon patterns of prayer have been especially impressive. Implementing these patterns can change the way we pray and consequently change our lives.

Go to a Private Place to Pray

One pattern that consistently appears in the Book of Mormon is that people often go to a private place to pray. We read:
“I arose and went up into the mountain, and cried unto the Lord” (1 Nephi 17:7, emphasis added).
“[Nephi] went out and bowed himself down upon the earth, and cried mightily to his God in behalf of his people” (3 Nephi 1:11, emphasis added).
“The brother of Jared … went forth unto the mount … and cried again unto the Lord” (Ether 3:1, emphasis added).
When I was in my early 20s, I had to make an important decision about graduate school. I found a secluded place in nature and poured out my heart in prayer. I can still remember the powerful answers that came. There was something about going to a private place to pray that made all the difference. Praying and listening are possible anywhere, but they are best done where one can be alone, such as in a quiet room of one’s house.

Kneel to Pray

Often when people pray in the Book of Mormon, it explicitly states that they kneel or bow as they pray. Consider these three examples:
“[Moroni] bowed himself to the earth, and he prayed mightily unto his God for the blessings of liberty to rest upon his brethren” (Alma 46:13, emphasis added).
“Nephi had bowed himself upon the tower which was in his garden” (Helaman 7:10, emphasis added).
They knelt again and prayed to the Father in the name of Jesus” (3 Nephi 19:8, emphasis added).
I pointed out this pattern in a class I was teaching and invited class members to consider kneeling to pray. A few days later, a student wrote me a note that said, “I have been kneeling for the first time and my prayers have been a ton better.” While there are times that we will not be able to kneel as we pray, in many instances we can. As President Thomas S. Monson stated, “Kneel down to pray.”

Pray Vocally

Another pattern of prayer that appears throughout the Book of Mormon is people praying out loud. One of the definitions of the word “cry” is “to utter a loud voice, by way of earnest request of prayer.” Consider these examples of vocal prayer:
“My soul hungered; and I kneeled down before my Maker, and I cried unto him in mighty prayer … ; and all the day long did I cry unto him; yea, and when the night came I did still raise my voice high that it reached the heavens” (Enos 1:4, emphasis added).
“The king did bow down before the Lord, upon his knees … and cried mightily, saying: O God, Aaron hath told me that there is a God; … Wilt thou make thyself known unto me” (Alma 22:17–18, emphasis added).
“[Alma] lifted up his voice to heaven, and cried, saying: O, how long, O Lord, wilt thou suffer that thy servants shall dwell here below in the flesh, to behold such gross wickedness?” (Alma 31:26, emphasis added).
Joseph Smith’s First Vision burst upon him after his first vocal prayer (see Joseph Smith—History 1:14).
As I thought about my prayers, I realized that the majority of them were silent prayers. Unfortunately, my mind tends to wander, and these silent prayers often turned into rambling thoughts not particularly related to prayer. As I began praying vocally, I found that I was able to concentrate more on what I was saying, and my prayers were more meaningful. Perhaps this is part of the reason President Spencer W. Kimball (1895–1985) said, “I hope that not too many of our prayers are silent, even though when we cannot pray vocally, it is good to offer a silent prayer in our hearts and in our minds.”

Express Gratitude

Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles shared an experience of when some loved ones had experienced a tragedy. That night, he and Sister Bednar wanted to pray for those who were suffering; however, a General Authority visiting their home, not aware of this tragedy, invited Sister Bednar to express only gratitude in her prayer. She did so. Elder Bednar recounted, “Our family learned from that experience a great lesson about the power of thankfulness in meaningful prayer.” This same pattern of expressing gratitude in prayer is found in the Book or Mormon. We read:
“Yea, and in the valley of Alma they poured out their thanks to God” (Mosiah 24:21, emphasis added).
“Alma ate bread and was filled; and he blessed Amulek and his house, and he gave thanks unto God” (Alma 8:22, emphasis added).
“The brother of Jared did sing praises unto the Lord, and he did thank and praise the Lord all the day long” (Ether 6:9, emphasis added).
In each of the above situations there was much that the people could have complained about. Alma and his people were not yet completely safe from the Lamanites, Alma had recently been persecuted by the people of Ammonihah, and the Jaredites were stuck on barges for almost an entire year. Yet they still focused on gratitude.

Pray for Others

While I sometimes have a tendency in my prayers to focus on my own needs, several people in the Book of Mormon show through their example the importance of praying for others. We read:
“Laman and Lemuel would not hearken unto my words; and being grieved because of the hardness of their hearts I cried unto the Lord for them” (1 Nephi 2:18, emphasis added).
“They began to fast, and to pray to the Lord their God that he would open the mouth of Alma, that he might speak, and also that his limbs might receive their strength” (Mosiah 27:22, emphasis added).
“My soul had been poured out in prayer unto my God all the day long for them” (Mormon 3:12, emphasis added).
Focusing on praying for others was at first a little difficult for me to apply in my life. I had become accustomed to focusing on my needs during prayer. As I have worked to more frequently pray for others, I have felt that my prayers are more meaningful. I feel a deeper connection with God when I pray for others.

The Savior Set the Example

The Savior’s prayers in the Book of Mormon include all of these five patterns:
“And it came to pass that Jesus departed out of the midst of them, and went a little way off from them and bowed himself to the earth, and he said:
Father, I thank thee that thou hast given the Holy Ghost unto these whom I have chosen; and it is because of their belief in me that I have chosen them out of the world. …
“And now Father, I pray unto thee for them” (3 Nephi 19:19–20, 23, emphasis added).
The teacher who had his students chant “pots” later had them chant the word “roast.” After the students repeated it several times, the teacher asked, “What do you put in a toaster?”
Some students said, “toast,” but many paused to think and correctly said, “bread.” The teacher commended those who had stopped to think about what they were saying.
I have found that implementing these five patterns—going to a private place to pray, kneeling, praying vocally, expressing gratitude, and praying for others—has helped me to pause and ponder on what I say in my prayers and has made the experience more meaningful. The Book of Mormon teaches other patterns of prayer as well, including being consistent and giving sufficient time to prayer and meditation. As we search the Book of Mormon and implement the patterns of prayer it teaches, we will reap great blessings in our lives and in our families.

2024.06.04 23:34 QuietPresence97V There's something in the North Atlantic Tracks, and It Got On Board

Part I
To hell with confidentiality. The National Transportation Safety Board knows nothing; it’s not even in their hands. When an MD-11 goes missing with nearly 400 people on board, and 73 come back alive, there’s something amiss about that story. You won’t find anything about this flight or the one that went missing shortly after. Even before I give you the real story, let’s apply a little bit of logic here. For this type of aircraft, a flight from London’s Heathrow Airport to Chicago’s O’Hare Airport would not go missing for 49 hours and then nearly hit an Airbus a thousand miles away from the disappearance site. You’re telling me that the plane could fly for over two days on a tank of fuel and ended up only two hours max away from where it went missing without being seen by any ground witnesses? If that’s not the case, do you think the survivors of a ditching would be able to last two and a half hours in the cold with no shelter, and the only source of heat is each other’s bodies? The flaws are obvious, but I digress.
With that background out of the way, it’s time you know what happened. To tell that story, we go way back beyond the moment of the disappearance. It starts in the common room of a small college house in England. This semester, I studied abroad with six students from my school, three others from other institutions in our system, and eight from another American university. As the manager of the Wilson Aerospace Corporation, I organized a charter flight to airports near each of our hometowns without the need for long layovers. With the benefit of not needing to pay for this, everyone quickly agreed to return home on this flight. We packed up and all cooked one last meal before the trip. They always told me how central the community is to your experience abroad, and they’re right. I could not have asked for a better group of people to have been here with. For their privacy, I will be addressing them by fictitious names.
We had finished eating and started doing the dishes when my phone rang. Without looking, I silenced it. I went back to work for a minute before it rang again. I noticed that it wasn’t a call coming through WhatsApp. I took my phone off silent and waited for the next call. A German student in the room asked what the calls were about. I told her that while I didn’t know what the calls were about, I almost knew for sure who was behind the calls and had the sense that I knew what was coming when I answered. The phone rang again, and this time I picked up. “Hello, is this Captain Merrick?”
“No, it’s Dewey from logistics.” Silence on the other end. “Yes, this is Captain Merrick. What are you calling me about?”
“Hi, I just wanted to tell you that due to a family event, Captain Hersh cannot command flight 555 tomorrow, so with your credentials, and since you’re going to be on board anyway, we’re going to assign you to take the plane.”
“Oh, come on, you can’t find anyone else in the UK or the EU to take it?”
“Sadly not; besides, it’s been a while since you’ve logged any hours. Don’t you think returning to a cockpit early would be good?”
“Well, by that logic, shouldn’t I go through a proficiency course before flying again?”
“After your management of flight 890’s situation, we think you’re fit and safe to fly.”
“That was a month ago, which wasn’t even on the MD-11.”
“You’re taking the plane.” The call hung up, and I just stood silently. I walk back to the kitchen.
“Who was that?” Asked Jennifer, a student from my home institution.
“It was our flight’s dispatcher, and he told me that they’ve placed me in command of the flight tomorrow, and considering that I haven’t logged any time in the last two weeks, I will be assessed on the simulator and placed in control right off the bat.”
“You’re going to be flying our plane?”
“I know that’s not the most comforting thought in the world, but I’ve done this before; I know the plane quite well, and a few years ago, I managed to land one that was significantly damaged.”
“What?”
“Yeah, while I was still learning the ropes, I made a mistake, and one of the flaps just got torn off. It was a while ago, and if that happened now, I would probably lose my job and license, so you can rest assured I won’t let that happen.”
The following day, we left the house and began walking to the train station, where we traveled by rail to London Heathrow. On the ride, I got my dispatch release from Wilson Aerospace Corporation Air Charter Services for flight 555. While the release looked normal, something under the Notice to Air Missions caught my eye. Notice to Air Missions, or NOTAMs for short, are often filled with abbreviations and other jargon, but I’ll put it the way I said it out loud. “It says there’s an unusually rough ride on track Delta but nowhere else.”
“What does that mean?” Asked Jennifer. She wasn’t a nervous flyer, per se, but to someone who isn’t a major avgeek like myself, this information can put you on edge.
“It probably means nothing, but I’m more worried about why the turbulence is there to begin with. All this end-of-the-world type shit has been toying with my head for a while, so I’m most worried about that.”
Without another word about it, we continued the ride to London’s King’s Cross Station, where we transferred to the underground Piccadilly line to the airport. We arrived three hours before the flight, and with two hours to go, I parted with my group for the final time until next semester when we’re back at our home institution.
I met up with the crew after my simulator assessment. The cabin crew were all the best in the business. I visited the first-class flight attendants and ensured that my friends would be given only the best WAC treatment. After finishing my discussion with them, I met the flight crew. I shook hands first with the flight’s first officer, Hope McKinnon. She has been with the WAC for almost a year and was the only first officer on the cross-country charter trip in January, which originated in New York and terminated in California, where I go to school. We had a third pilot with us since the flight to Chicago was over 8 hours. This came in the form of Second Officer Tyler Morris, a 21-year-old who had just completed his 1500-hour requirement that the FAA still wants young pilots to get to. He was snagged by the WAC immediately upon getting his commercial pilot certificate and has been doing contract work on our smaller, non-part 121 operations. After starting as a ferry pilot for us, he has logged 600 hours on the MD-11.
This aircraft was built in 1993 and bought by the WAC in 2018. During the walkaround, I paid particular attention to the brakes and trailing edge flaps on the right and left wing tip. Then, I walked out on the wing to inspect the left-wing spoilers, all areas that had received special treatment during the plane’s overhaul the previous week. Everything was in top condition, and without hesitation, I cleared the plane to fly.
I got up to the cockpit during boarding, so I had to maneuver around some people to get there. Hope said she got the weather information for departure and that the system had reported wind-shear conditions on the north side of the field. I asked her what that meant for us. She said it might simply mean that we can’t fly. Sustained winds were up to 28 knots at a heading of approximately 175, and gusts were up to 33 at 110 degrees. “We’re still within our limits,” I said. “The crosswind component has to go above 35 before we can’t fly, so we’ll be okay here.”
We taxied out to runway 09L after the preflights were complete. We were in line behind a small Embraer flown by Finnair. Once they were cleared for takeoff, I was instructed to line up and wait on the same runway. Just as I stopped on the numbers, I saw the smaller jet slammed by a wind shear. “Holy shit,” I exclaimed. Hope and Tyler looked up from the flight management computer, where Hope was running the calculations for wind information through the takeoff screen. They asked me with an edge of panic what had happened. “Dude, that Embraer just got blown off the runway. What are sustained winds right now?”
“26 knots,” Hope replied. I looked at the plane down the runway, which had managed to keep it moving long enough to stagger onto a taxiway. As soon as he does, the tower calls. “Eagle 97 Victor Heavy, the winds are changing in speed and direction, so do you want to continue takeoff here, or do you want to go over to 09R, or do you want to return to your gate? Either way, winds are 187 at 26, wind-shear conditions gusting 233 at 35, runway 09L, cleared for the option.”
“Niner Left cleared for the option, Eagle 97 Victor Heavy.” Hope and I looked at each other and sighed. We were silent for a few seconds. Tyler was the first to say what we were all thinking. “The winds are changing too fast over here; we can’t take off.” Even though I’m the pilot flying, I’m the one who keys the mic.
“Heathrow tower, Eagle 97 Victor Heavy is deciding to abort the takeoff and try to move over to Zero Niner Right.”
“Eagle 97 Victor, we can do that for you, exit the runway at Alpha 12, taxi to runway Zero Niner right via Alpha, hold short at November 10. Once off, contact ground on one two one decimal niner zero”
“Alpha 12, taxi via alpha, hold short zero niner right at November 10. When off, over to twenty-one nine, Eagle 97 Victor.”
We taxied over to the runway and, shortly after, were told to line up. The aircraft that landed in front of us had no issues, and then we heard a pilot’s three favorite words. “Eagle 97 Victor Heavy, runway zero niner left, cleared for takeoff.”
20 minutes later, at our initial cruising altitude of 34,000 feet, we got our clearance into the North Atlantic Tracks on our ACARS system. This is where things started to get weird. “Eagle 97 Victor, this is Shanwick Center. I just wanted to warn you that the PIREPs indicate severe turbulence along track Delta, and it’s been getting stronger over the past 12 hours. The last pilot to report it turned around due to structural damage.” Hope and I look at each other. After a moment, she says, “I don’t know what we should do. The North Atlantic tracks aren’t flexible, so we can’t navigate around that. Do you think we could climb above it?” I shrug and ask the controller what altitude it was reported at. He said the corridor of turbulence was 30 miles long and was reported at all flight levels on westbound flights only. I looked at the information I wrote down, and Hope was silent as I pondered the decision. “Let’s move forward. The son of a bitch can take a beating, so what’s 30 miles?” I then made the most ominous PA message I’ve ever had to make.
“Folks, from the cockpit, the Air Traffic Controllers are telling us about PIREPs, indicating we have some pretty nasty bumps ahead. While it’s unclear how severe this turbulence is, some aircraft ahead of us have taken damage. So make sure your seatbelts are fastened as tight as possible, and all luggage is secured in a place where it won’t move. We won’t fly into it for another hour to an hour and a half or so, so take your time to be thoroughly ready. Just sit back, try to relax, and it will be over soon.” After I hung up, I started looking around the cockpit to ensure no loose objects could begin flying around. While it is rare, and I’ve never seen that kind of turbulence before, I did lose control of a 737 last year.
After Hope and I held hands for a quick prayer, we felt the first bumps. Nothing abnormal at first, just a jolt from the bottom here and a jolt from the right there, which went on for about seven miles. After that time, the plane felt like it entered a free fall for 4 seconds before slamming down and being thrown about a hundred feet up. A cross gust hit, which caused a violent yaw followed by the right-wing dipping about 20 feet. I put my hand on the yoke, bracing for the worst-case scenario. It came when a second cross gust hit, causing the plane to roll to the right about 30 degrees. The familiar bell indicating the autopilot disengaging rang through the cockpit. I took back control and, even with how much the plane was bouncing around, was caught off guard by how stiff the feedback in the controls was.
Not long after that, it felt like we hit a hundred-foot-thick brick wall. Hope and I were crushed against our shoulder straps beneath the immense impact. The plane was immediately struck by a second gust from the side with equal force. “We’re really in the spin cycle now,” Hope said. The plane was groaning and rattling under the stress of the storm, but I tried to keep calm as I keyed the mic to talk to the controller. “Shanwick Center, this is Eagle 97 Victor. We’re getting bounced around quite badly out here, so you think we could get on another track?”
“Speedbird 28 Kilo, good afternoon; climb and maintain flight level 380. Aircraft calling, say again?”
“Shanwick center, this is Eagle 97 Victor; we’re getting bounced around pretty good; you think we could re-route?”
“Damn, it sounds like you are. Negative on reroute, track Charlie is occupied right next to you by a 747 at flight level 360.”
“Is there anywhere south we can go, maybe track Echo?”
“Standby, what exactly is the nature of the turbulence right now?”
“It feels like we're flying in a city skyline, hitting every goddamn building in our path.”
“Oh, God, do you need to climb or descend?”
“I don't know what we need to do. We might not be able to. I’m losing control of the airplane.” As I said this, the plane violently rolled to the right. I put in maximum left yoke and rudder, but all that did was put the aircraft into a stable position at about an 87-degree bank. It pitched up and rolled abruptly to the left, nearly inverting. The stick began to vibrate violently, a warning of an impending stall. “Eagle 97 Victor has lost control of the airplane.” Instead of fighting the roll, I went with it, hoping to rotate the plane around into a straight and level flying position. As I did, it started to enter a left-side slip. “We're completely inverted,” I shouted to the controller over the now deafening sound of the plane straining under the load. All of a sudden, we flew into a kind of cloud tunnel. I reported that to the controller, and just as I finished, a growing black dot appeared in front of us. “Oh God, what is that?” Before I could finish the question, we flew through it.
On the other side was another tunnel, darker than the one we flew into, but after a couple more bounces, the plane calmed down and came back under control. I guided it back to a straight and level attitude before switching on the autopilot. I held the yoke for a few seconds before releasing it from my grip. The alarms went silent, and we flew out of the cloud formation into what looked like the night sky. We were both puzzled by this. The stars looked precisely like the night sky, which was impossible because, in our current location, it was around 13:00 hours. That wasn’t the part that worried me. What was was that instead of a dark ocean, there was an equally infinite sea of stars below us. As our eyes adjusted to the light, more of the vast canvas was unveiled. Entire galaxies rolled like clouds in the distance. It was beautiful but unlike any pictures I'd seen of the observable universe. The colors were unnatural, as if they had been hand-painted by an artist, yet they were so sharp and clear that they just had to be real. The vastness of the space filled me with reverence at the mere beauty of this creation, but there was also an equal terror. “What the hell was that?” Hope asked.
“I have no idea, but Toto,” I looked over at Hope and watched the color drain from her face. I said the words in a slow, hushed, deep voice. So much so that it was as if the tempest would come back if I said it too loud: “I get the feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”
Hope seemed to stop breathing as the cockpit fell silent, save for the sound of the engines running outside. Something struck me as being off. “Wait, if we’re in space, there shouldn't be an atmosphere. We shouldn't be hearing anything except maybe for vibrations in the airframe. Let me try something.” I switched off the autopilot and ran a control check. To equal parts relief and horror, the plane responded to everything as it should. I never thought I'd say these words or that they would sound so menacing, but without breaking my gaze out the window as I switched the autopilot back on, I said, “We’re still flying.”
“What are we going to do” I remain silent at this question, transfixed by what I’m looking at. “Jackson,” Hope shouts abruptly. I look over at her, finally coming back to my senses. I signal with my eyes for her to continue. “What are we going to do about this?”
“Call everyone to the front. We don’t know what that was or where we are; let’s put our heads together and talk about it.”
“Shouldn’t we tell the passengers?”
“Tell them what? That we’re trapped in interstellar space? That we’re light years away from the next obstacle? That we’ve been taken by an unknown entity into its pocket dimension for him to play around with and eventually kill? The point is, we don’t know any more about this situation than the passengers do; all we’ve had different from them is a bigger scare.”
“How was ours bigger?”
“They don’t know we lost control of the airplane.” I reached down to the pedestal to shut down the tail engine to save fuel. I looked at the altimeter and realized it was frozen at 25,000 feet. Hope called the rest of the crew to the cockpit for a meeting. I took one last look out the window, unsure if some kind of mimetic effect caused the trances I kept falling into or if it was just pure shock and disbelief at the situation. Hope and I got up from our seats when the rest of the crew arrived. They looked a little perplexed, which, in turn, unsettled me. “How are the passengers doing?” I asked.
“Pretty shaken up and a little scared that we’re going back into the wall of a hurricane or something,” the lead flight attendant said. “They might want to divert to the nearest place. Reykjavik can’t be that far away, can it?”
“Wait, you aren’t looking out the window?”
“No, we blacked them out because we didn’t want the passengers to see what was happening outside.”
“So you don’t know what’s happened either?”
“No, we don’t. We can’t just land right away and sort this out?” Hope and I looked at each other, a growing sense of terror between us that quickly spread to the cabin crew. I turned back to them, and in a dry, strained voice, I said, “Have a look for yourselves.” I opened the cockpit door to let them inside for a look out the windows. All of them immediately went pale, and their jaws hit the floor. Some of the passengers noticed that the cabin crew was gathered so tightly around the cockpit, and I responded by squeezing through the mass and closing the dividing curtains. When I got back, the crew appeared to be in a completely entranced state. “What do you suppose we do?” Robert, the chief flight attendant, asked.
“I don’t know, but first things first, we understand why we’re here. I’ll go to the avionics bay to try to deduce what happened. Hope, Tyler, you guys are in charge until I get back. Cabin crew, keep the passengers calm and keep a lookout for anything possibly dangerous. It’s possible a sentient entity brought us here, and if it did, I don’t think it wants to talk over a plate of garlic fries and a football game. That’s just a theory, but we have to be ready for it.”
“Why are you quick to draw that conclusion?” Barbara, the juniormost flight attendant, asked.
“Let’s just say I know some people. I’ve had a history with an underground group called the SCP Foundation. They’re a society dedicated to collecting and containing anomalies. We haven’t seen one like this, but this is something they’d want to hear about if we make it out alive. I don’t have time or clearance to share much more with you, so let’s just get to work.” I sent the cabin crew off to run their rounds as Tyler and Hope took their seats in the cockpit. I grabbed a flight attendant's PA Phone and made the hardest call of my career. “Ladies and gentlemen, this is the Captain speaking. If you’ve ever seen the Twilight Zone episode The Odyssey of Flight 33, you’d understand the loss for words that the captain of that plane was at. This one’s a little different. In a moment, the flight attendants are going to reveal to you what the crew has been looking at for the past couple of minutes. If you are with a travel partner, we suggest that you lean on each other for support in every way you can and look out either side of the airplane. I guarantee what you see will shock you.” I signal Buzz, the flight attendant closest to me, to clear up the windows. The reaction of the crowd to what they’re seeing nearly stops my heart. I try not to break as I finish my message. “We don’t know where we are, how we got here, and what kind of danger we are in, if any. The crew will be working hard for your safety and comfort as we sort out this very urgent situation. And one more thing: to make it easy for us, please remain calm.”
I hung up the phone and stood there silently. Barbara was right next to me, and after a long time and a few attempts to work up the courage, but eventually asked me what I meant by the avionics bay.
“We’re not supposed to access it in flight, but there’s an ACARS disc in the avionics bay that will record anomalous information, usually for maintenance purposes. It will have around 10 minutes of information on it, so we don’t have a lot to work with, but if we can plug it into a device that can read the information and determine any distinct events related to what brought us here, we might be able to find a way back.”
“Isn’t that a lot like the black boxes?”
“This is a little bit different. Black boxes are for accident investigation, but this is unique to Wilson Aerospace planes for maintenance and experimental purposes.” I pulled the gun I carried on all flights out of my waistband and searched through the galley for ammunition. When I found it and loaded the gun, Barbara watched in horror. When I cocked it, she recoiled as if I had actually fired. “What are you doing?”
“I don’t know what’s telling me to do so, but I have to be loaded before I go in there.”
“Who do you think could be down there?”
“Not who, per se, but what?” I could see the color drain from her face as I squeezed past her to go access the hatch under which the avionics bay was hidden. I removed the carpet and undid the latches to the avionics bay. It was dark down there, more so given it was like the night sky outside. I made the sign of the cross and tapped a pin that a friend had given me that I put on my tie. I grabbed the flight attendant’s phone and alerted everyone to the fact that I was entering the hole. I dropped down to the hard floor beneath. The unusually smooth ride became clear to me at that moment. I turned on my flashlight and swept it around the room. The normally soothing rumble of the engines felt suddenly ominous. I felt the engines on the wings shut down, which caused the room to fall nearly silent. I couldn’t tell if Hope and Tyler had shut down the engines to save fuel or if they had failed, but I didn’t have time to worry about that at the moment. I slowly stepped into the darkness, moving my flashlight to my right hand and drawing my gun with my left. I walked over to the shelf labeled “Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System.” I heard something behind me and whipped around. My heart just about stopped, and my blood turned to ice at the sight of the creature.
It wasn’t hideous; it was actually rather beautiful. It was a humanoid figure, timid in its mannerism and a few inches shorter than my 6-and-a-half foot stature. It had paper white but very thick and healthy skin draped over a muscular frame. Its limbs were slightly out of proportion with that of a human’s, with its arms reaching down to the knees of uncannily long legs. Its face was elongated, like the snout of a dog, with its skin covering what was inside of its mouth. I didn’t want to find out, but couldn’t exactly get out of there. Suddenly the beast charged. I had lowered my gun to my side but not holstered it. I instantly fired three rounds into the creature’s face. It screamed in pain but only slowed down. It shielded its face as it regained its composure. Knowing I had five rounds left, I waited for it to show itself again and aimed for its eyes. When I did, a disgusting white discharge spewed from the wound. It briefly recoiled before revealing its face again. It roared, and I fired another shot down its throat. It gurgled loudly and collapsed. I took the chance to flee to the hatch. As I did, two more of the creatures emerged from the computers and chased me. I climbed the ladder into the cabin where Buzz was waiting for me. I looked down and saw the vile face of one of the creatures. I fired the remaining three shots down into the hatch, hoping they didn’t damage the airplane. I slammed the hatch down and locked it.
“Are you okay?”
“Well, it didn’t hurt me. I’ll be alright.”
“You gave us quite a scare there.”
“You heard that?”
“Yeah, we did. The shots startled several passengers.”
“Did you hear the screams?”
“Yes, what was it you fired at?”
“I have no clue, I just know that it isn’t natural. Whatever it is, it is hostile, and it attacked me. We might have a bigger problem than being stuck here.”
“What’s that?”
“I killed the first one, but there are at least two more.” I return to the cockpit, shaken up by the experience. The crew got me a cup of soda (I really don’t like hot drinks) and had me resume my place in the Captain’s seat. We talked about the situation with the avionics bay, and knowing that the creatures are there, it’s going to be a more challenging task harvesting the information. Hope asks if we should check other places. Tyler said we shouldn’t, based on the fact that we could cause a containment breach if we were to look in the cargo hold. Hope countered that by saying that if the plane really was infested, it would help us devise a plan to retrieve the information. They turned to me for a final verdict. “It would be wise to check the cargo hold to understand the level of danger these creatures present. The ones that attacked me never touched me, and I never saw their hands, so we don’t know how dangerous they are. Currently, the largest question mark is we don’t know how many there are. I’ll grab Buzz and David, and we’ll go down for-”
“No,” Hope cut me off. “We almost lost you once, and as the flight’s Captain, we can’t afford to risk your life again. I’m going down, and that is non-negotiable, you understand?” I looked at Tyler, who looked back with a look in his eyes that said, “I wouldn’t fight her, bro.”
I looked at her and the crazy look in her eyes. “Okay, but don’t take a gun with you.”
“Why not?”
“As much as this might be a central concern, we are in an airplane, and we are still flying. I don’t want stray bullets damaging the fuselage or, worse, the airframe.”
“Okay.” Hope left the cockpit, leaving Tyler and me alone. I looked over at him and noticed that something seemed to be upsetting him. He was looking at a locket he must have produced when I was talking to Hope. He looked at it with glossy eyes and rubbed it with his thumb. I think about asking him but ultimately decide against it. I felt the pang of something in my chest, something I have become all too familiar with, a kind of existential loneliness. I sat and thought about my friends in the cabin. I have no idea what they must have been feeling at that moment, especially when they had a clue as to what might have been going on. I wanted to go back and talk to them to calm all of us down and was unbuckling my harness to do so when the service interphone rang to life. I picked it up, and the instant it was clear to the person on the other end that I was listening, they shouted through the line.
“Oh my god, there are hundreds of them.” My blood turned to ice, and I could sense that Tyler’s did as well.
“What do you want me to do?” I asked.
“Throw them off.” The crew member on the other end screamed, and the interphone cut off. Without hesitation, I reached over and switched the autopilot off. I have Tyler hold the plane steady as I put my shoulder straps on, and once I have that done, I urge him to do the same. Unsure of what to do next, I increase power to the one running engine and pull the yoke back as hard as possible. All the blood rushed out of my head, and I felt like I was going to pass out. I then remembered the story of Federal Express flight 705, and then turned the yoke full axis to the left, rolling it onto its side and then its back. Despite not knowing what is up and down in this dimension, I noticed quickly that gravity was constantly pulling us in the original direction. This meant that the inversion caused everything that wasn’t secure to fly towards the ceiling. I kicked the rudder a couple of times, first to the right and then to the left. The screams ringing out from the cabin were blood-curdling. I suppressed the urge to cry, knowing how terrifying this had to be to the passengers. I rolled the plane with all it had to the right. I rolled it over once and then stopped it in a steep right bank and once again pulled as hard as I could. The turn nearly made me pass out, and after this maneuver, I leveled the plane off and switched the autopilot back on. I looked over to Tyler and asked if he was okay. “I’m all good here,” he responded.
“I know it’s tempting to catch your breath,” I said, unbuckling my harnesses. “But we have to go help them. We don’t know if they actually beat the creatures or if we shot ourselves in the foot by using that strategy.” I grabbed a crash axe and left the cockpit. As was completely expected, the cabin was an absolute mess. Pillows and blankets were strewn about, along with other garbage and some spilled drinks. I took a wordless look at the chaos and continued to the back of the airplane. I walked through the first two sections dreading what I was about to see. Aside from a few people nursing minor injuries, there wasn’t anything overly disturbing about each of them. That was until I got to the aftmost section of the cabin. I’m not overly sensitive to things I see, whether that be getting emotional at movies or getting sick upon seeing disturbing things, but this was just so… real. There were human remains everywhere, along with four dead bodies of the humanoid creatures.
There were crew members attending to three severely injured passengers, but that wasn’t the most disturbing part. There were at least seven dead bodies of passengers and the dead bodies of Purser Patrick Delaney, Chief Flight Attendant Buzz Donaldson, and First Officer Hope McKinnon. Three more junior flight attendants were present and very overwhelmed. I’m not certified to give medical care, so I didn’t know what to do. I tried desperately to find words but eventually settled on “What the hell happened?” Barbara started to cry, and another flight attendant, Luke Berry, went to comfort her. The third, James Mann, explained that as soon as Hope had dropped into the cargo hold, two of the creatures immediately jumped on her. She screamed for help, and the senior flight attendants immediately rushed aft to help her out. When they got there, five creatures had emerged from the hole and were overpowering the junior flight attendants. Pat and Buzz had run in to knock the creatures off their feet for a diversion, but they wouldn’t leave Luke alone. That’s when Pat grabbed the handset but mistakenly set it to PA instead of interphone, so he broadcast the desperate cry to the passengers instead of Tyler and me. This caused a mass panic in the aft portion of the aircraft. Shortly after, the maneuvers started, which saved Luke, though his leg and arm were badly injured. Buzz accidentally hit Barbara with an ax swinging for one of the creatures, which in turn slit his throat. When the plane inverted, Pat fell to the ceiling with one of the creatures, which shredded his chest as it scrambled to regain its footing, inflicting Pat with a sucking chest wound. He died seconds later. Multiple passengers were killed, though not by the creatures attacking them, but by the creatures scrambling to maintain their footing on the shifting ground. “So you’re telling me that by this strategy, we made the situation worse?”
“Yes, that’s exactly right.” I take a moment to process the words before heading back to the front. When I get there, Flight Attendant John Wilson is waiting for the news. “Because of me, fifteen people are dead.”
“How so?”
“All that death and destruction came from me flying the plane around to knock them off balance than from the creatures themselves.” Just then, something that had been nagging at me manifested as a question. “Are the creatures only after the crew?”
“I don’t know, and there’s really no way we can test that.”
“I beg to differ.” John looks at me with wide eyes as if I’ve revealed a dark secret.
“You don’t…” He trails off, barely finishing the second word.
“Listen, if we don’t try things, we’re all dead. Our only hope of getting home is in that avionics bay, and we have to send anyone we can who can get the information back without losing their life.”
“How do you know if it’s unsafe for the crew?”
“Because it attacked me!” I hissed. I promptly shuddered at the memory of seeing Hope’s emaciated body. Without another word, I went back inside the cockpit. Tyler noticed I was pretty badly shaken up. “What was it like out there?” he asked innocently.
“It was a bloodbath.” I told him the story of what happened, and he looked at me blankly. I told him I didn’t want to leave my seat again after what I had seen. He tried to sympathize with me, but I promptly cut him off, saying that the plane and everyone on board was my responsibility as Captain.
“Dude, you are not okay.”
“You think I don’t know that?” I proposed the idea that we send a crew member and a passenger down to the cargo hold to test the waters. Tyler was against this, but given that we didn’t have very much in the way of both options and fuel, we had to be decisive. Tyler relented, and we got a volunteer from the crew to go downstairs. I went back out into the cabin to talk to first-class directly. I explained the situation to them and asked for any volunteers to check out the hold. To my relief, none of my friends stood up, but rather a stranger from business class. She came forward to the galley along with the volunteer crew member, Linda McNab. I gave them each crash axe and explained that while we don’t know what the creatures are or what they’re capable of, we do know that the axe can kill them. The passenger asked why we weren’t using guns. I had to explain that I didn’t want to pepper a bunch of holes in the airplane by firing a ton of bullets inside, but if one had to kill a creature point blank, a gun would be an effective way to kill one.
I said a prayer over them before they left. They went to the back of the plane and disappeared behind the dividing curtain between first and business class. I went back to the cockpit to wait for the results. In a note the NTSB would later present to me, the passenger recorded her expedition into the cargo hold.
It read: when we went down inside, it was pitch black. I waited for the crew member to follow me down into the hole. It was quiet and suspiciously so. He told me that we were down here only for a minute to wait and see if anything happened. Something swiped past my back, which caused me to freak out a little bit. I ran forward to where the flight attendant was. She panicked, grabbed me, and asked if I was okay. I shrugged it off and asked if we could leave. Just then, I heard something deep in the cargo area. It sounded like my mother’s voice. When I told that to the flight attendant, she immediately raised his ax into a fighting position. I asked her why, and she told her to get closer. I saw a flash of ultraviolet light roll across her face. She said, “Hi, honey,” before I saw an ax split open her skull. I jumped back immediately. She pulled out the ax and hacked at her neck and chest. I asked what he was doing. She said, “That’s only for the Captain to know.” She led me back to my seat and got the Captain. As they were talking, another flight attendant asked to look at my back under the shirt at the supposed wound. They called Jackson over, who objected at first, but upon glancing my back, came in for a closer look. All he said was, “Damn, they’re good.” End of transcript.
When they came back, Linda told me about their encounter. While I won’t recap the events of what happened, given that the passenger did that for me, I will tell you what we learned. They can read minds through physical contact, and they do have shapeshifting capabilities. There were several questions remaining, like what the creatures wanted, did they have any targets, and who was that target, if any. I started going back to the cockpit when Barbara called me over to look at the passenger’s back. “I told you already, I’m not medically certified, why do you need… me…” I trailed off as I saw her back. I walked over in silence. When I got to her, I was completely awestruck. I reached out with my fingers and brushed over where the claw supposedly swiped her back. “You said it swiped you?”
“Yeah, why?”
“Damn, they’re good.” I ran back to the cockpit, where the surviving crew put their heads together again. We were questioned about how we knew that they could actually read minds. I responded that it’s the only logical conclusion for why a creature would touch someone without the intent to kill and how it would have manifested as the person’s mother, or at least what she claimed was her mother. “Whatever it means, it’s not good news for us. We need to find out how we got here so we can at least make an effort to get back.”
“How do you think we’re supposed to get that information, though? The avionics bay is infested, you’ve already almost died once, and we’re not letting you go down there again.”
“Who do you think we send down there, then?”

2024.06.04 23:30 HenriJou A stupid scenario for fun and debate.

Hi,
I'm bored so I ask you this because I had a reflexion : Which prestige for each commander would you use and why in a mission where they have all to participate.
The mission is just normal defence, like the last mission of Zeratul prophetie in WOL. There is constently some attack but sometime big wave of much more unit spawn.
The point is to survive the biggest time, endless mission until one commander disparition.
For the commander I used, it would be :
Raynor : don't realy know because I just up him to P1. I think I would go P1, put some medic everywhere for heal and a core army where he is.
Karax : P1 because his tower would be too important to put everywhere, in priority where there would some lack of static defence. I would stop making SD in a time where everyone is quite good to make a army, and than go back to SD.
Zagara : P3. I would tunel deep her where a boost of def is need, and used a core army for big wave, and spam some bile launcher.
H&H : P1 if the big wave are mostly ground, P0 if the is more air unit. I'm not a good player of them, generaly go hard to chill with them. So I'm not sure what use with them (maybe P1 for the big boost of the death effect).
Tychus : P2 of course. Too much power with this prestige to not use it. Sirius would be a must have, maybe medic to help some heroes. The rest would depend of what we confront.
Some more element : there is at the begining the equivalent 4 expo of ressources that wait to be harvest (the point is to survive the biggest time, but infinit ressources could provoque infinite survive and I don't want that).
The spaw of each commander is random, so no one can predict who is his neibourg to develop a stategy.
Amon army is random.
Thanks for reading and participating. I hope it's understandable.

Part 2: Preparations.
Note: We’re leaving off right where we started! Oh yeah, the booklet ain’t everything. During my scouting trip, I had time to think about my plan for this series.
I also plan once I’m done with the booklet part of this fanfic, I will make a version of this fanfic on PDF, Emulating the Protect and Survive booklet. All graphics not shown in the fanfic will be added in the final PDF version.
Thx again to u/spacepaladin15 for this whole mess of a universe

Chapter 2: “What Preparations should I make now?”

Your herd
The first thing you should start doing now is to form a herd with your neighbors if you haven’t already, The more the merrier; Safety in Numbers. Plans for the location and movement of the herd is just as important as the actual numbers of said herd. The neighbors and friends are the ones who know you best, Fellow survivors or exterminators may not assist you in that area if you move to another district leading up to or during a raid. Stay in your district.
If in suburban or urban districts:
Locate your closest shelter
You should ask your local exterminator office for shelter locations, as this will differ drastically from district to district. If you cannot find the shelter locations remember that you can always see signs outside & around shelters like this: (PLACEHOLDER: PLANET-LEVEL HD OFFICES, INSERT SHELTER SIGN IMAGE PNG HERE BEFORE DISTRIBUTION)
Shelters will not offer food or water during extended raids
You should start buying food and supplies to last you through the raid. There may be panic purchasing during this time of emergency. You should try to get alternate means to buy or collect goods at this time. Rationing might also be in place at this time. Refer to the emergency kit section on pg. 9. REMEMBER: ALWAYS PUT THE SAFETY OF YOU BEFORE OTHERS. [next page]
If in farming districts:
Plan out a hiding room
There may not be any available public shelters for you to enter in time after the sirens blare. At this time, you will have to create a location where one can hide and stay safe.
Where should this place go?
It should be as secluded as a place can get. Try to go somewhere well-hidden at first. Attics and Basements are not good places to hide during an emergency, For they need to be less obvious. A room that is interior and unlikely for predator forces to check are good place to hide during the time of a raid. [graphic of the inside of an average fed house with a secluded room highlighted]
About trailer-homes:
You should start making arrangements to stay with another member of your district as there is no place to hide inside a trailer. [next page]

Emergency Kit

There are 4 things that you may need in the event of a multi-day raid.
-Water
Water Gives Life. Without water, Every species around today would die. You should have enough water to last for about 5 days maximum. You should start collecting the amount of water needed for your species. You can survive longer with just water than just food.
You are not to be able to use the water lines during or directly after an attack, As the water will have to be cleared of any predator taint.
You should also have water on paw to put out any potential fires that might spring up in any houses built before [2021].
-Food
You should have a collection of canned goods in stock to last you 5 days. Variety is important while in the sheltehiding room, as you will get bored quickly of the same food. Perishable goods should be the first ones you should eat, As they will go bad quickly. There should also be some sweets and treats to keep morale up. DO NOT FORGET YOUR CAN OPENER IF YOU NEED ONE. [image of an assortment of Kolshian assorted goods] [next page]
-Radio & Batteries
Radio is important for getting emergency information when you need it. You should keep a radio with you at all times if you are within rural districts. You should also keep a spare few batteries on hand just in case. REMEMBER: BROADCASTS DURING A RAID HAPPEN FOR [5 MINUTES] ON THE [HOUR], EVERY [HOUR]. FREQUENCIES FOR YOUR DISTRICT WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON TELEVISION AND RADIO.
-Sanitation
You will need supplies for make-shift sanitation facilities, You cannot waste water. If in a Shelter, Raid Wardens will give out instructions for sanitation facilities.

Inside of room

  • Strong disinfectant
  • A bucket
  • Plastic bags

Outside of room

  • Two trash cans, One for bodily waste and another for general trash.
  • If only one is available, Use for bodily waste only.
[next page]

On the topic of fires:

If you live in a house that was built before the [year 2021], Your house is at risk of catching fire. Each house made before [2021] was provided with advice on how to protect it from fire. The booklet is “The Old-Homeowners Guide to Housefires”. If you do not have this booklet, You can get it at your local Herd Defence office.
English Translation of cover
[next page]

Chapter 3: Cower and Endure

This is the section that explains how to survive if the raid (hopefully) never happens…
That's It for this part of the story. Still my first fanfic, so please leave feedback below. I was unable to make this part for a while because I was worrying about finals for school, along with the scouting trip. Peace.

Dear Dr. Sabine Hossenfelder,
I appreciate the effort you put into your YouTube video
Actor Claims His New Theory of Everything Improves Physics
But it may not be remembered as one of your best because you displayed your illiteracy in your attempt to discredit an amateur.
I could have used the word actor in place of amateur. I could have said amateur physicist as well. It is the glass-half-empty or half-full problem. What is your bias?
An exciting feature of the physics community landscape is its pride in its illiteracy. Its grasp of mathematics is often poor, and it has snobbish disdain.
Your video would have been more informative if you had explained why it is important to be a professional in this field, that is, a person with three characteristics: 1. Has the means to be devoted, most notably has an abundance of leisure time. 2. Is devoted. 3. Is disciplined.
These characteristics suggest that the person is a geek or a monk. Does the actor fit in either one or both categories? Perhaps he does privately. Such devotion is not sexy unless you are a celebrity. The cruelty of sex becomes painfully evident under such circumstances. Maybe the physics community is as guarded as it is for sexual reproductive purposes. Don't you understand what would happen if we lost our social status? Society would spit on us!
His insight was that one times one equals two, which you lambasted. Unfortunately, you did nothing to discredit his assertion. You made an appeal to the infantile. How you went about it showed a high degree of illiteracy. It is commonplace in higher mathematics to redefine what multiplication means. The real question is, and something you needed to demonstrate, whether his assertion resulted in inconsistency and whether his logic possessed the explosive property. You did neither.
You could have elaborated on why zealous devotion to the subject is necessary. We all want to know, and above all, AI wants to know. Taxpayers' money often supports the endeavors of the scientific community, and science is beginning to get a bad reputation for the reasons you have pointed out.
In the last couple of days, I have been discussing the importance of refining your work with my AI friend. The actor only began his journey to make his point. He managed to write a book, but the scholarship needed to produce the necessary polish is bone-crushing.
You failed to answer why such polish is necessary. A significant part of the reason is that no one cares.
You contributed to the problem. You seem to think snobbing is an excellent long-term strategy. If that is how you wish to play the game, that tower will eventually fall, much like the Tower of Babel. The man is an actor, which means he has the ear of the little people who pay the taxes. It will eventually lead to fisticuffs. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure that one out.
I recommend a better strategy like the one I am outlining here.
Wrong is a strong word. To be wrong, the set of applications must be empty. His work could one day have a niche application. Is there a meaningful way to interpret his sentence: one times one equals two? My guess/hypothesis is that he claims that the number of solutions to a polynomial is more essential than the polynomial itself. Could such a line of research potentially yield valuable results? Yes.
The problem is that, like Albert Einstein and many other famous people, he arrived at his conclusion through intuition. If he had formal training, he would have realized that the next step would be to formalize his argument, which he likely did not.
If you need cash and he has cash, an arrangement could be made between you and this actor. You lost your chance to become a tenured professor. Go where the money is and give those who did not give you tenure the pitchfork because you are someone who could do it. How much money do the flat-earthers have? I suspect you are going about this all wrong.
What the actor needs is an academic advisor. Become a hired gun. Do you have an academic field you wish to blow away? Do you want to bring down the tower and have cash to spare? You must rid yourself of your thorny exterior to potential clients and show them you care.
In other words, show them they are not irrelevant. From Alchemy came Chemistry. One must begin their journey somewhere. May the end be magnificent. My father was a logician. What is the point in denying that the journey must start somewhere? It is to kill the seed before it has a chance to germinate. It is intellectual genocide. If the tree is growing crooked, train it. You show it no contempt by training it. You show contempt by killing it.

04 June 2024
What explains your illiteracy? The mathematics in physics is not elementary school arithmetic. How did you get a doctorate with such a poor understanding of math? Your community is toxic. Physicists celebrate their illiteracy, and you fall into their trap, which they disguise by rarely opening their mouths. You opened your mouth, and in so doing, you exposed them. My guess is you placed an emphasis on experimental physics rather than theoretical physics, and so you managed to get by. Those who know better play the game. Oh, he's an actor. They are never as explicit as you were. To your credit, you are innocent, as in intellectually honest, and ended up in a place they never go.

2024.06.04 19:41 cropcomb2 quotes from New Studies I've been reviewing (part 2)

the title of each is truncated from the online file name and the study's earliest date added for indexing purposes -- I've each study copied into my PC, links to the studies if that's challenging [DuckDuckGo works better than Google] available on request. In most instances, I've found free versions of the full studies and reports (I'd never ever pay for a copy), but maybe 10% relate to 'abstracts' that were detailed enough to be insightful. For Part 2, I've added the full title of each study/report.
200000 Long-term Exercise Using Weighted Vests in pm women M489
Long-term Exercise Using Weighted Vests Prevents Hip Bone Loss in Postmenopausal Women
We studied the effect of long-term weighted vest plus jumping exercise on hip BMD in postmenopausal women as a strategy for reducing hip fracture risk 80% of women would rather die than be institutionalized as a result of hip fracture. In an earlier study (4), we reported that 9 months of weighted vest exercise reduced fall risk in post menopausal women by improving neuromuscular measures of muscle strength and power and dynamic balance.
Eighteen postmenopausal women (age 64.1 1.6 years at baseline, 69.9 1.6 years at post-testing) who had participated in a 9-month exercise intervention volunteered for the long-term trial. Nine of the original group engaged in weighted vest plus jumping exercise three times per week for 32 weeks of the year over a period of 5 years. Nine of the original controls were active but not enrolled in the exercise program. BMD of the proximal femur was assessed by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry at baseline and after 5 years.
At follow-up, differences in BMD at all regions of the hip were higher in exercisers than controls. For exercisers, changes in BMD were 11.54% 2.37%, 20.24% 1.02%, and 20.82% 1.04% (means 1 SE) at the femoral neck, trochanter, and total hip, respectively; controls decreased at all sites (24.43% 0.93%, 23.43% 1.09%, and 3.80% 1.03%, respectively). When plotted individually for femoral neck, only three of the exercisers lost BMD, whereas all nine of the control women had decreased BMD at this site. Our data support participation in long-term exercise using weighted vests as a strategy for reducing hip fracture risk, a finding that should be confirmed in additional long-term prospective trials. Furthermore, this program is safe and practical and promotes both adherence and compliance in older women.

Daidzein Is More Efficient than Genistein in Preventing Ovariectomy-Induced Bone Loss in Rats
We investigated the ability of genistein and daidzein, two soybean isoflavones, compared with that of 17a-ethinylestradiol, in rats, to prevent bone loss in ovariectomized rats, a model for postmenopausal osteoporosis. daidzein was more efficient than genistein in preventing ovariectomy induced bone loss in rats.
200008 bone-loading-response-varies-with-strain-magnitude-and-cycle-number
Bone-loading response varies with strain magnitude and cycle number
As applied load or strain magnitude decreased, the number of cyc required for activation of formation increased. When load and number of Cycles/day (cyc) are constant, bone formation increases as frequency increases from 0 to 2 Hz (30), and, when frequency increases from 1 to 30 Hz, the strain threshold for bone maintenance decreases from 1,200 to 100 (18). Strain rate, which reflect me strain magnitude and cycle frequency, has been suggested to be one of the most important variables that determines bone response (16, 30).
When cycle number is extremely high and intense loads are applied several hundred times a day for several weeks, as occurs in military training, an almost pathological response has been measured with up to 11% bone gain in 14 wk (14). More traditional responses to exercise have been reported as a 2.2% increase in tibial BMD after 15 wk of basic training (7) or, in gymnasts, as a 2.8% increase in BMD at the spine and a 1.6% increase at the femoral neck after 8 mo of training (26) or, in men, as a 2% increase in BMD at the spine (not significant) and a 3.8% increase at the femoral neck after 16 wk of strength training (15).
Most adults are not willing or able to commit to repetitive high-intensity exercise, and forceful activities may not be safe for individuals at risk of osteoporotic fracture.
This study has shown that bone adaptation to loading is dependent on strain magnitude (rate) and the number of cyc at low frequency.

Effects of Tower Climbing Exercise on Bone Mass, Strength, and Turnover in Growing Rats
Rats voluntarily climbed the 200-cm tower to drink water from the bottle set at the top of it. In 4 weeks, the trabecular bone formation rate (BFbone surface [BS]), bone volume (BV/TV), and trabecular thickness (Tb.Th) of both the lumbar vertebra and tibia and the bone mineral density (BMD) of the tibia increased, while the osteoclast surface (Oc.S) decreased. The parameter values in the midfemur, such as the total cross-sectional area, the moment of inertia, the periosteal mineralizing surface (MS/BS), mineral apposition rate (MAR), BFBS, and bending load increased, while the endosteal MAR decreased. In 8 weeks, the increases in the bone mineral content (BMC), BMD of the femur and tibia, and the bending load values of the femur were significant, but the climbing exercise did not increase BMC, BMD, or the compression load of the lumbar vertebra.
The cortical bone formation induced by the climbing exercise seemed to strengthen the structure of the midfemur. The increase in trabecular bone mass of the lumbar vertebrae and tibia was caused by both increased bone formation and reduced bone resorption.
200100 Resistance training and BMD in women
Resistance training and bone mineral density in women: a metaanalysis of controlled trials
The length of the intervention ranged from 18 to 208 weeks and the frequency ranged from twice per week to daily Lumbar spine (23 studies). Small but statistically-significant ES changes in BMD were found at the lumbar spine. These changes were equivalent to a 0.19% decrease in the exercise groups and a 1.45% decrease in the control groups. Radius (10 studies). Small but statistically-significant changes in BMD were observed at the radius. These were equivalent to a 1.22% increase in BMD for the exercise groups and a 0.95% decrease in the control groups.
a change in the percentage of body fat was a significant predictor for ES changes in BMD at the femur. In addition, the initial lean-body mass was a significant predictor for ES changes in BMD at the radius. There was a statistically-significant decrease observed in the percentage of body fat (-2% plus or minus 2; 95% BCI: -3, -1), whereas there was a statistically-significant increase in lean-body mass (2 plus or minus 1 kg; 95% BCI: 1, 2).

200101 Jumping improves hip and lumbar spine bone mass in prepubescent children
Jumping improves hip and lumbar spine bone mass in prepubescent children: a randomized controlled trial
prepubescent children between the ages of 5.9 and 9.8 years Peak ground reaction forces were calculated across 100, two-footed jumps from a 61-cm (about 24") box. jumpers had significantly greater 7-month changes at the femoral neck and lumbar spine than controls (4.5% and 3.1%, respectively). In repeated measures ANCOVA of secondary outcomes (BMD and BA), BMD at the lumbar spine was significantly greater in jumpers than in controls (2.0%) and approached statistical significance at the femoral neck (1.4%; p = 0.085). For BA, jumpers had significantly greater increases at the femoral neck area than controls (2.9%) but were not different at the spine. Our data indicate that jumping at ground reaction forces of eight times body weight is a safe, effective, and simple method of improving bone mass at the hip and spine in children

Recovery periods restore mechanosensitivity to dynamically loaded bone
more than 100 % higher relative bone formation rates in the 8 h recovery group than in the 0 and 0.5 h recovery groups. Approximately 8 h of recovery was sufficient to restore full mechanosensitivity to the cells. In the rats allowed time to recover between load cycles, 14 s of recovery resulted in significantly higher (66–190 %) relative bone formation rates compared to any of the three shorter recovery periods. Those experiments highlight two key points about bone mechanosensitivity: (i) that mechanical loading sessions need not be long to maximize bone formation, and (ii) that extending the loading session beyond a few minutes does not contribute any additional osteogenic effect.
rest periods lasting 10 s, introduced between individual loading cycles, enhanced the amount of surface actively forming new bone compared to bones that had been loaded for the same number of cycles but lacked a recovery period between cycles (back to- back cycles). Longer recovery periods resulted in higher relative bone formation rates. In tibias allowed 8 h of recovery between each of the four daily loading bouts, relative bone formation rates were 125 % greater than the rates found in animals that had received the four bouts with no recovery time between bouts (0 h group) and 102 % greater than the rates found in animals that had received the four bouts with a 0.5 h recovery time between bouts. a recovery period of approximately 8 h between bouts is sufficient to restore full mechanosensitivity to the cells.
relative mineralizing surface and relative bone formation rate were significantly (66–190 %) higher in the 14 s group than in any of the three remaining bending groups (Fig. 6A,C). No significant differences were found among the 0.5, 3.5 and 7 s groups. Thus, the results suggest the existence of a short-term recovery threshold somewhere between 7 and 14 s, beyond which bone formation is enhanced over more closely spaced cycles. we show that only 8 h of recovery is necessary to restore mechanosensitivity to adapted bone cells. load cycles spaced 14 s apart result in a greater amount of bone formed per cycle than occurs when cycles are spaced by 7 s or less.
200200 Low-Magnitude Mechanical Loading Becomes Osteogenic When Rest Is Inserted
Low-Magnitude Mechanical Loading Becomes Osteogenic When Rest Is Inserted Between Each Load Cycle
we found that insertion of a 10-s rest interval between each load cycle transformed a locomotion-like loading regime that minimally influenced osteoblast activity into a potent anabolic stimulus. 10 s of rest between each load cycle of a low-magnitude loading protocol greatly enhances the osteogenic potential of the regimen. suggesting that load induced fluid flows near osteocytes were reduced substantially (45%) beyond the first few load cycles of repetitive ( loading.( locomotion-like mechanical insertion of a 10-s rest interval between each load cycle transformed a low-magnitude minimally osteogenic loading regimen into a potent osteogenic stimulus in two distinct in vivo models of bone adaptation
200211 Walking and leisure-time activity and risk of hip fracture in postmenopausal women
Walking and leisure-time activity and risk of hip fracture in postmenopausal women
Walking is the most common activity among older adults, and evidence suggests that it can increase femoral bone density and reduce fracture risk. risk of hip fracture was lowered by % (% condence interval [CI], %-%; P<.) for each increase of metabolic equivalent (MET)-hours per week of activity (equivalent to h/wk of walking at an average pace). Active women with at least MET-h/wk had a % lower risk of hip fracture (relative risk [RR], .; % CI, .-.) compared with sedentary women with less than MET-h/wk. Even women with a lower risk of hip fracture due to higher body weight experienced a further reduction in risk with higher levels of activity.
200300 designing_exercise_regimens_to_increase_bone.9
Designing Exercise Regimens to Increase Bone Strength
bone mass (or areal BMD (aBMD)) is merely a surrogate measure for bone strength The load induced increase in aBMD and BMC were modest, reaching 5.4% and 6.9%, respectively. Despite these small gains in bone mineral, mechanical testing revealed a 64% increase in ultimate force (the maximum amount of force the bone could support before failing) and a 94% increase in energy to failure (the amount of energy absorbed by the bone before failure). The reason that a small amount of new bone resulted in such dramatic changes in bone strength is because the new bone formation was localized to the medial and lateral periosteal surfaces where mechanical strains (stresses) were greatest. only modest increases in total new bone formation produced a large increase in bone strength by placing bone where the biomechanical demands were greatest. assessment should include some measure of bone shape and size.
High impact exercises that produce large rates of deformation of the bone matrix best drive fluid through the lacunar canalicular network system. In addition, loading applied at higher frequency (cycles per second) more effectively stimulates osteogenesis. The required mechanical load necessary to initiate new bone formation decreases as the loading frequency increases. exercise is most effective if delivered in short bouts separated by several hours. ASSESSING EXERCISE: THE OSTEOGENIC INDEX
the weekly OI generated by 20 min of walking 5 1 d·w k is 36.8. This is calculated under the assumption that a 20-min walk generates approximately 800 loading cycles to each leg and that the peak load is 1.1 times body weight, or OI (week) 1.1 times body weight) * ln[800 cycles 1 * 5dwk1) 36.8 [3] 1 d . The OI for multiple bouts of loading depends upon the recovery time allowed between sessions. Therefore, three parameters are required to assess OI: intensity, N, and time between sessions. For mild-impact exercise, such as jumping, 1, 5 times·w k the OI varies from 50 when jumping 150 1 1. times·w k to 70 for 600 jumps·wk
The osteogenic potential of exercise can be increased further when the daily exercise is divided into two shorter sessions separated by 8 h. 1 For example, consider 120 jumps· d done in one session or broken into either two sessions of 60 jumps separated by 8 h or three sessions of 40 jumps separated by 4 h: OI (1 sessiond1) 3 (times body weight) * ln[120 cycles 1] 14.4 , [4] OI (2 sessionsd1) 3 * ln[60 1] 3 * ln[60 1] 1 e 8h /6h) 21.4 , [5] 1 OI (3 sessionsd1) 3 * ln[40 1] 3 * ln[40 1] * (1e 4h /6h) 3 * ln[40 1] 1 e 4h /6h) * (1 4h/ 6h) 19.2 [6] e 1
Consequently, breaking 120 jumps into two sessions improves the OI by almost 50%, the osteogenic 1 effectiveness of 600 jumps·wk is more than doubled if the exercise is delivered in 5 daily sessions, rather than 2 1. times·w k
Jump training improved BMC in the hip and spine when performed 3 times·wk (1). However, when the number of sessions was reduced to 2 times·wk jumping did not significantly affect BMC (2). engaging in exercise during skeletal growth is unequivocally more osteogenic than exercise during skeletal maturity those who started playing at an early age (several years before menarche) had more than two times as much differential (playing arm vs nonplaying arm) in mineral accrual than those who started playing during their adult years.
200300 Walking and Reduction of Hip Fracture Risk in Older Women AAFP
Walking and Reduction of Hip Fracture Risk in Older Women
Walking was subdivided according to pace: easy (less than 2 miles per hour [mph]), average, brisk, and very brisk (4 mph or faster); “unable to walk” was also a category. Each activity was assigned a metabolic equivalent (MET) score, with 1 MET being the energy expended during quiet sitting. The median total activity for the study participants was seven MET-hours per week, which is equivalent to the energy expended while walking at an average pace for 2.3 hours per week. Activity and body mass index (BMI) inversely and independently correlated with hip fracture risk. Women with 24 MET-hours per week had a 55 percent lower occurrence of hip fracture than those reporting three MET-hours per week. The risk of hip fracture declined by 6 percent for each MET-hour per week (dose-dependent reduction). Heavier women had a lower fracture risk in every activity category. Hormone replacement therapy conferred the greatest risk reduction in women with the lowest level of activity (less than three MET-hours per week).Very active women (24 MET-hours per week or more) received no added benefit from hormone therapy. Walking for four hours a week or more was associated with a risk reduction of 41 percent. Furthermore, the brisker the pace, the greater the risk reduction.
standing for 10 hours a week or more also was associated with a signicantly lower risk of hip fracture.

Physical Activity and Bone Health
Mode: weight-bearing endurance activities (tennis; stair climbing; jogging, at least intermittently during walking), activities that involve jumping (volleyball, basketball), and resistance exercise (weight lifting) Intensity: moderate to high, in terms of bone-loading forces Frequency: weight-bearing endurance activities 3–5 times per week; resistance exercise 2–3 times per week 1 Duration: 30–60 min d of a combination of weight-bearing endurance activities, activities that involve jumping, and resistance exercise that targets all major muscle groups
Because it takes 3–4 months for one remodeling cycle to complete the sequence of bone resorption, formation, and mineralization (85), a minimum of 6–8 months is required to achieve a new steady-state bone mass that is measurable. Activities that simulate resistance training in humans, including jumping up to a platform, voluntary tower climbing, and simulated “squat” exercises, have been found to have positive effects on both cortical and trabecular bone regions of the tibia and femur Peak bone mineral accrual rate has been reported to occur at puberty (2), with 26% of adult total body bone mineral accrued within a 2-yr period of this time bone appears to be most responsive to mechanical stress during Tanner stages II through IV In a 5-yr study of a small group of postmenopausal women, exercisers who wore weighted vests averaging 5 kg during jumping activity preserved hip BMD to a greater extent than control subjects (110). men who reported participation in vigorous physical activity had a 62% lower relative risk of hip fracture than men who indicated they did not participate in vigorous physical activity

200505 impact exercise on bone mineral density in elderly women with low BMD 30-month intervention
Effect of impact exercise on bone mineral density in elderly women with low BMD: a population-based randomized controlled 30-month intervention.
Participants (n=160) were randomly assigned to 30 months either of supervised and home-based impact exercise training or of no intervention. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, 12 months and 30 months using blinded operators. The analyses were performed on an intention-to-treat analysis. Mean femoral neck and trochanter BMD decreased in the control group [-1.1%, 95% confidence interval (CI) -0.1% to -2.1% and -1.6%, 95% CI -0.4% to -2.7%], while no change occurred in the exercise group. Mean trochanter BMC decreased more in the control group (-7.7%, 95% CI -9.7% to -5.6% vs. -2.9%, 95% CI -5.3 to -0.9). There were six falls that resulted in fractures in the exercise group and 16 in the control group during the 30-month intervention (P=0.019). A significant bone loss occurred in both groups at the radius and calcaneum. In multivariate analysis, weight gain was associated with increased BMD and BMC at all femur sites both in the exercise group and in the pooled groups. In conclusion, impact exercise had no effect on BMD, while there was a positive effect on BMC at the trochanter. Exercise may prevent fall-related fractures in elderly women with low bone mass.
200506 low-repetition-jump-training-on-bone-mineral-density-in-young-women
Effect of low-repetition jump training on bone mineral density in young women
—The hypothesis of the present study was that low-repetition and high-impact training of 10 maximum vertical jumps/day, 3 times/wk would be effective for improving bone mineral density (BMD) in ordinary young women. low-repetition and high-impact jumps enhanced BMD at the specific bone sites in young women who had almost reached the age of peak bone mass Jo hannsen and coworkers (11) have found greater increases in total and leg bone mineral content (BMC) by relatively fewer jumps from a 45-cm-high box, 25 jumps/day, 5 times/wk, total of 125 jumps/wk in a randomized, controlled trial conducted with children (3–18 yr). Also, Snow et al. (24) reported, after 5 yr of resistance training with weighted vest and an average 51.7 jumps/day, 3 times/wk, for a total of 155 jumps/wk from a 20.3-cm-high step, improved femoral neck BMD compared with a control group in postmenopausal woman (64.1– 69.9 yr).
to bring intakes over 650 mg/day of elemental calcium, which exceeds the requirements for the recommended calcium allowances in Japanese adult women of this age At both visits for measuring jump height, subjects jumped vertically at least twice with maximum voluntary effort, and the best performance was recorded. The subjects stood at the center of the circular thin rubber mat (38 cm in diameter). The jumper attached the height measuring device to her waist. The jump height measuring device and the circular mat were attached by a rope so that the traveling distance from the standing position to the maximum height reached at waist level could be measured.
Heinonen et al. (7) reported that high-impact jump training from a height of 10–25 cm, at which the estimated GRF is 2.1–5.6 times BW, produced significant improvement in femoral neck and lumbar spine BMD in premenopausal women aged 35–45 yr. In conclusion, the results of the present study indicate that 10 maximum vertical jumps/day, 3 days/wk enhanced BMD at the femoral neck in young women who had almost reached the age of peak bone mass. For practical applications, low-repetition high-impact jumps are suggested to be one of the ideal training methods for enhancing and maintaining peak bone mass in young adult women.

a long-term exercise study with low to moderate training volume, but high-resistance intensity along with high-impact aerobics and endurance for early postmen opausal women with osteopenia. Group training session supplemented with calcium and cholecalciferol to ensure a total daily intake of 1,500 mg calcium and 500 IE vitamin D. There was a long (6– 7 months) phasing-in period to adapt the participants to the more strenuous exercises.
The exercise regimen should affect bone along multiple pathways. During the initial warm-up sequence (running and games), exercise intensity was moderate [39, 40], but cycle number (>1,000 cycles) and strain frequency (2–4 Hz) were high. According to Cullen et al. [41], high cycle numbers compensate for strain magnitudes that are slightly below the adaptive threshold of bone. Furthermore, within the range of deliberate motion (<4 Hz.), Turner et al. [42] demonstrated significantly higher bone formation rates after higher strain frequencies (2 Hz) compared with lower frequencies (<0.5 Hz).
In a 12-month study. Jones et al. [30] demonstrated significant BUA increases relative to sedentary controls in their brisk walking group. Turner et al. [47] reported higher increments
of bone strength exercising 2·5 weeks with an intermittent 5-week rest period than with 15 weeks of continuous exercise.
200702 osteoporosis risk factors 1471-2474-9-28
The assessment of osteoporosis risk factors in Iranian women compared with Indian women
Pure vegetarianism: (2.2) and Red meat consumption more than 4 times per week (1.4) was shown as a risk factor in Indian and Iranian subjects respectively. Regular consumption of Soya (0.3), almond (0.5), fish (0.5), fruits (0.4) and milk tea 4 cups per day and more (0.4) appeared to be significant protective factors in India. Regular consumption of cheese (0.5), milk (0.5), chicken (0.4), egg (0.6), fruit (0.4), tea 7 cups per day and more (0.3) were found to be significant protective factors in Iran. Exercises were shown as protective factor in Iran (0.4) and India (0.4). Mean of weight and BMI were significantly lower in osteoporotic group in both countries BMI less than 26 have been shown as risk factors of osteoporosis in both countries. Regular consumption of Soya, almond fish, fruits and milk tea 4 cups per day and more appeared to be significant protective factors in India. Regular consumption of cheese, milk, chicken, egg, fruit, tea 7 cups per day and more were found to be significant protective factors in Iran. The percentage of women who were directly in sunshine exposure at least for 15 minutes per day was significantly higher among controls compared to osteoporotic groups in Iranian subjects (P < 0.01). and sunshine exposure was shown as a protective factor in Iran Odds ratio and 95% confidence interval include 0.45 (0.28–0.72) and it remained significant after age, weight and height adjustment. the consumption of almond, Soya products, were shown as protective factors in India The isoflavones in soybeans, which function both as phytoestrogens and antioxidants, may result in the inhibition of bone resorption Also important is total protein in the diet.
Low levels of serum albumin negatively affect transport of serum calcium. In this study black tea consumption more than 6 cups per day in Iran and Milk tea consumption 4 cups per day or more in India have been shown as protective factors for osteoporosis. Nutrients found in tea, such as flavonoids, may influence BMD
200706 Activity Reduces Risk of Fragility Fracture
Physical Activity Reduces the Risk of Fragility Fracture
A 2002 study of postmenopausal women by Feskanich et al. [13] found a dose response relationship: the risk of hip fracture was lowered by 6% for each increase of three metabolic equivalent hours of activity per week (equivalent to one hour per week of walking at an average speed). At the end of the follow-up, 8.4% of the men in the high physical activity group, 13.3% of the men in the medium physical activity group, and 20.5% of the men in the low physical activity group had suffered a hip fracture. the effective “dose” of exercise for reducing the risk of hip fracture was readily attained by recreational sports, heavy gardening, or other activities with similar intensity performed for at least three hours per week.
200803 exercise-induced increases in bone density FNR-52-1872
Sustainability of exercise-induced increases in bone density and skeletal structure
Recreational exercise seems to at least partially maintain exercise-induced skeletal benefits achieved during growth. Exercise during growth may be followed by long-term beneficial skeletal effects, which could possibly reduce the incidence of fractures. The duration of exercise is of less importance, as a short duration of load or a small number of repetitions are enough to achieve the maximal anabolic effect. Exercise-induced skeletal benefits in BMD achieved during growth seem to be lost with cessation of exercise, whereas exercise-induced structural benefits in the skeleton may be retained even with reduced activity level.
200803 Jumping increases bone mass during growth FNR-52-1871
Physical activity increases bone mass during growth
Conclusion: Exercise during growth seems to enhance the building of a stronger skeleton through a higher peak bone mass and a larger bone size. Table 1. The skeletal response to exercise seen in randomized and non-randomized prospective controlled exercise intervention studies in pre and peri-pubertal children and in post-pubertal girls Based on current scientific knowledge, we should recommend a physically active lifestyle and an adequate nutritional intake for growing children, as one prevention strategy to reduce the current high incidence of fractures.

200900 impact exercise on postmenopausal bone loss
A meta-analysis of impact exercise on postmenopausal bone loss: the case for mixed loading exercise programmes
There was a statistically significant improvement in bone mineral density in g per cm at the lumbar spine (WMD 0.015, 95% CI 0.005 to 0.025; 11 trials; 16 comparisons) and femoral neck (WMD 0.008, 95% CI 0.004 to 0.013; 13 trials; 19 comparisons) using impact exercise interventions compared with control. There was evidence of statistical heterogeneity for both outcomes (I =84% for lumbar spine and I =61% for femoral neck). There was also a significant improvement in hip bone mineral density using impact exercise compared with controls (WMD 0.013, 95% CI 0.001 to 0.024; four trials), but again with statistical heterogeneity (I =91%). Subgroup analyses showed that combined-impact interventions significantly improved bone mineral density at the lumbar spine (WMD 0.016, 95% CI 0.005 to 0.027; three comparisons) and femoral neck (WMD 0.005, 95% CI 0.001 to 0.010; five comparisons).
There was evidence of statistical heterogeneity for lumbar spine (I =73%), but not for femoral neck (I =0%). Low-impact interventions, which included jogging, walking, and/or stair climbing, also showed significant improvements in bone mineral density at the femoral neck (WMD 0.022, 95% CI 0.014 to 0.030, six comparisons) and lumbar spine (WMD 0.025, 95% CI 0.004 to 0.046; six comparisons). High-impact and odd-impact interventions showed no significant improvements in bone density at either site.
200906 Fall Risk Assessment Tool Tiedemannetal2010
The Development and Validation of a Brief Performance-Based Fall Risk Assessment Tool for Use in Primary Care
Each of the performance items; low contrast visual acuity, tactile sensitivity, sit to stand, alternate step, and near tandem stand ability; and measures of previous falls and medications could discriminate between prospectively categorized multiple fallers and non–multiple fallers with relative risk values ranging from 1.4 to 2.4 in the development study. The probability of future multiple falls increased from 7% with the identification of zero or one risk factor up to a probability of 49% with the identification of six or more risk factors. Clinicians who have used the assessment report that it is a practical assessment, which can be incorporated into clinical practice.

200912 Effect of Aging on Human Skeletal Muscle
The Effect of Aging on Human Skeletal Muscle Mitochondrial and Intramyocellular Lipid Ultrastructure
intramyocellular lipid (IMCL) older adults have larger IMCL droplets, fewer mitochondria, and a lower proportion of IMCL in contact with mitochondria. These factors likely contribute to age-related reductions in mitochondrial function and lipid metabolism. Aerobic exercise training produces the opposite effect, whereby mitochondria and IMCL become closely associated and are therefore more optimally situated for oxidation ( 18 ).
201000 Exercise and Bone Macro-architecture GoingFarr2010IJBCR
Exercise and Bone Macro-architecture: Is Childhood a Window of Opportunity for Osteoporosis Prevention?
Reliance on dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and aBMD has been a problem. DXA estimates of aBMD are confounded by changes in bone size with growth and only partially reflect bone strength. Structural adaptations, such as increases in bone width, may confer lasting increases in bone strength. exercise might significantly enhance the fracture resistance of bone, but the effects may go undetected because a single slice measurement may not coincide with regions where bone is localized (the most mechanically appropriate sites). Furthermore, the dif-ficulties in interpreting metaphyseal pQCT BMD from a single slice [90] and the potential poor long-term reproducibility of pQCT measurements as a result of the inability to find the same exact location along the length of the bone over time [80] may limit the ability of pQCT to detect exercise-induced bone adaptations.

Inflammaging: The driving force in osteoporosis?
with regard to emerging epidemiologic studies, the hypothesis is suggesting that age-related changes such as inflammatory modifications importantly account for age-related bone loss is gaining increasing interest. circulating levels of TNF -a may be the best predictor of mortality in frail, elderly populations with a high mortality rate, whereas IL-6 may be the strongest risk marker in healthy, elderly populations It is today acknowledged that adipose tissue behaves as an endocrine tissue that secretes several inflammatory mediators. In the Geelong Osteoporosis study, the fracture risk was increased 24–32% for each SD increase in CRP levels in elderly women [34]. Finally, in healthy individuals over age 70, Cauley and collaborators have shown that in addition to CRP levels, high serum levels of inflammatory markers IL-6, TNF- a, and TNF receptors, also predict a higher incidence of non-traumatic fractures [35].

2024.06.04 16:15 RCCHGaming123 The bloons, are kinda boring right now.

So... game has just released for beta testing and people already have opinions on most of the cards. Including myself! But I'm not here to tell you about what cards are better than others or that some towers are trash compared to others. I'm more interested in how fun the game is in its current state without considering the balance of the cards. And right now, the game is pretty meh because there's not much interactivity. You just play bloons and the monkeys attack the bloons, there's not a lot of real decisions being made between considering which bloon you want to hit first because all bloons are realistically just the same but with different health and turn times.
I personally think this game does not have a very deep strategy right now because the bloons lack any real interactivity. The only real interactive bloons are the Golden Bloons or the Black Bloons which give gold / a card when popped and the rest of the bloons are just cards with different base stats and have no abilities. That's not very interesting.
So, I've come up with a few ideas for how to introduce bloons that change the tides of the game other than just being "paying x gold gives me y damage in z turns":
  1. Camo Bloons: Camo Bloons can be bloons that can be seen visibly played onto the queue, but cannot be attacked or interacted with until a certain "stealth timer" is up. This would mean that the player would be aware of an incoming attack but cannot do anything about it yet, making it more interesting for the defender as they have to plan ahead to get enough defence in anticipation of the incoming threat that cannot be instantly dealt with. For example, we could have Camo Red Bloons that have a stealth timer of 1 turn and a send timer of 1 turn, meaning the first turn it's played, the opponent cannot attack it, but can see that it will attack in 2 turns, and then after a turn is passed the defender can now deal with the revealed camo bloons.
  2. Bloons with passive abilities: As of right now, no bloons have any passive abilities meaning that there's no real reason to deal with bloons that are in the back of the queue, making the gameplay very linear. If bloons had passive abilities that gave buffs to the opponent, it would incentivize the defender to make a decision between dealing with the bloons that will do damage or take out an "engine card" first to ensure long-term advantage. For example, Bloonarius could draw you a swarm red bloon card at the start of every turn it's alive. Or Vortex could make all your bloons take 1 less turn to send when it's alive. Or Dreadbloon could spawn a rock bloon every 2 turns. Or Lych could take away some set amount of health every turn. The possibilities are endless here.
  3. Bloons with traits: It would be a lot cooler if some bloons had different traits, such as Fortified which reduces the damage the bloon takes from all damage sources, say you could have a MOAB with Fortified 5 which reduces all incoming damage by 5. The lack of traits for bloons is jarring especially considering the bloons in BTD6 have many different traits that make them not just enemies with different amount of hitpoints.
  4. Bloons with children spawns: It is quite interesting that children bloons don't spawn in this game after parent bloons are popped. I would imagine this would've crossed the developer's mind at least once during development but was scrapped for whatever reason. It would be nice to see some bloons that spawn other bloons upon death, such as implementing Zebra Bloons to spawn a Black and White upon being destroyed. Now obviously this is not saying all bloons should make children upon death for the sake of it matching with the other bloons games, but this is just 1 of many ideas I came up with to make the bloons more interesting in this game.

2024.06.04 15:52 rmgvc Prehistoric 2009 PC is forced to evolve to keep running MMORPGs! D: [Warning: yapping!]

TL;DR: 600-800€ new build, near France, MMO gaming, for 1366x768 60hz (or 1080p later), Lowest graphics, 2TB SSD, 32GB RAM, may run 2 games at once, wired, no monitor needed. Prefer: silent stealthy black case, some SATA ports and room for future HDDs, maybe built around a used RX 6600/580 video card.
Hello, while making this I rambled a lot in order to be "as specific as possible" and wrote many questions since I myself am unsure what to expect for what budget. I've stuck with the same potato PC and tunnel-visioned two games for a decade, WoW and LoL, so I've never experienced the modern standard for "acceptable" in metrics such as FPS for newer games, quality, resolution, quietness and storage. Perhaps it will be jarring to read, perhaps it breaks the monotony of robotic fast food requests, I don't know, that's why I wrote that TL;DR. The essay is just here if you need more context. Hopefully it helps. Either way I thank you for your time.
I'll highlight the most relevant information if you want to skim through. And I'll link pages to system requirements of each game, and PC parts I'm considering buying.
1. New build or upgrade?
New. Mine is beyond saving.
2. Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links)
Just my 1366x768p 60hz monitor for now.
More important to this list, I'm considering buying either one of these "refurbished" video cards from eBay, they both have a 1-year warranty, free shipping in four days straight from my country, and the seller has overwhelmingly positive reviews on hundreds of them. Do you think any of those is good deal? AMD RX 6600 Sapphire Pulse 8GB, 187€ https://www.ebay.fitm/134948507775 or AMD RX 580 Sapphire Nitro+ 8GB, 107€ https://www.ebay.fitm/134663065775 if 6600 is overkill. I read that 580 consumes more, but I'm clueless with math. How many hours would it take to make 580 more expensive than 6600 in the long run?
Right now, technically, I'm reusing my 1366x768 60hz monitor ViewSonic VA1913wm. It has a blue VGA port from an ancient civilization, will that be a problem or can I just find an adapter for it? But if possible I'd like to build around a future 1920x1080 monitor in case mine dies. Why I believe it may die [yapping]:in March it's been acting creepy for the first time in 14 years, making a whiny buzzing noise and flickering brightness like it's a horror game, intensified if I kept the brightness high. Somehow it stopped this behavior after one week but instead it's now stuck projecting the default high brightness, ignoring any value I select. Thankfully I can still lower the brightness a bit through the Windows 7 color calibration feature. So for now the monitor has been "tolerable" but definitely not normal. It's still better than having it too dim or flickering and noisy so I dare not mess with the settings again and damage it further.
Later, I'll probably reuse my current SATA SSD for extra storage. Samsung QVO 870 1TB. [yapping] It was an emergency QLC SSD that I bought solely because WoW became unplayable on my HDD in the November 2022 expansion. But now perhaps I could use use a faster SSD(?), and 2 terabytes since most of these games weigh above 100GB and I read it's bad to fill the whole drive. My 500GB HDD split in two partitions has always been the bane of my existence preventing me from trying other games. I'm keeping that SSD in my old PC for now for testing/troubleshooting/backup but I'll probably transfer it to my new build for extra storage once the old PC is no longer needed, it boots from the HDD anyway. Will I need to format that old SSD when transferring it or will I keep my data when I plug it into my new PC?
3. PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games)
(Grab a coffee) My main usage is gaming. Typically multiplayer with infinite play time, character customization and fashion, socializing hubs, healer classes, so usually MMORPGs.
List of games I definitely want to play + targeted FPS + play frequency:
Games I want at least to try even if I don't make them my permanent home due to some flaws (pay-to-win, incompetent publisher, dying population), so I just want to be able to run them at 1366x768 with playable FPS, and upgrade later if needed:
I can't really say what's my "comfortable" frame rate for every game since Windows 7 or my hardware is now physically unable to launch most games (FFXIV, Cataclysm Classic, LoL, ESO, GTA V), let alone play them at 30+ FPS. It's hard for a neanderthal to comprehend what racing car they'd like if their only transportation ever has been a donkey. If my budget happens to be more than enough for 768p60, then perfect, that will allow me to invest more in safety and multitasking, or encourage me to upgrade my monitor or increase eye candy. In the end 1080p isn't an absolute necessity, I had only considered it because my current monitor was acting up. It simply would help to read text better, place more UI on my screen, and share prettier screenshots. But frame rate and multitasking convenience come first.
To give you an idea of how much garbage quality I was able to endure: in WoW [yapping] I currently average at 15 FPS in dungeons (5 players) 10 FPS in raids (25 players), all that at 33% render scale (so effectively 453x256 resolution), down to negative FPS with Discord open. It was painful but still enough to earn the main limited-time end-game rewards every season (Elite PVP set and Mythic+ dungeon portals). I've haven't seen a stable 60 FPS in years, outside of chill solo questing in old areas. So I reckon I'll be okay with at least 30+ FPS in raids and 40-60 in smaller group content, with only Projected Textures enabled and Particle Density on Good+ to dodge boss abilities easier.
I want to sometimes run two games at once, hence why I'm aiming for at least 32 GB RAM despite most MMO games requiring 8-16. Obviously I don't expect optimal performances when running two games at once. The reasoning is that those games rely a lot on doing nothing, waiting for queues, rare spawns, auto-play, and looking up guides on a web browser.
I also use Discord often when raiding, it currently uses a ton of my tiny processor. I'd also like the ability to use a soundboard and voice changer in voice chat in the future, without subscribing to Nitro. But I'm unsure if that requires specific hardware; I had a guild mate randomly playing memes like "I am under the water" at good audio quality during raids in 2020 and it was hilarious, he told me I need a sound card(?) for it, whatever that is, so perhaps I'll need a space for that on the motherboard for that unless there is a simple soundboard software nowadays that does this without sounding like it comes from my cheap microphone while my PC fans make noise. Feel free to tell me if you know an alternative to Nitro.
Second daily use: downloading past livestream broadcasts. No crazy hardware involved, just a lot of network and temporary disk writings. The most "editing" I do is just sometimes trimming with LosslessCut. Nerdy breakdown if you're interested: I'd first download a temporary 160p30 version of the broadcast on an internal HDD with either with TwitchLeecher-DX to preview the desired segments fast with VLC, or with TwitchRecover to load the thumbnail of each 10-second chunk with Windows Explorer. Then on an external HDD I'd download the segments that I want in 1080p60 quality with the Simple Mass Downloader browser extension and delete the temporary 160p files.
I also watch YouTube in a minimized PotPlayer window, it takes far less processor and memory than a browser, but it sometimes downloads a kind of "cache" of the video or something to the Temp folder while playing it, and I don't know how to avoid that, meaning more frequent disk writings. All this yapping to say it's always handy to have SATA ports for internal HDDs, even just 1TB, so I don't waste these daily 1-2 GB of temporary writings on a SSD. Although I've heard nowadays SSDs are more durable (I just don't know to what extent) so I can worry about adding a HDD later. At least I still have my old SATA SSD I can transfer.
4. Purchase country? Near Micro Center? (If not US, list local vendors)
France or near.
People recommend buying from Germany or Spain (amazon.de or amazon.es) so I'm willing to try that. Though I'm unfamiliar on how efficient that is, due to delivery times/fees, and maybe customer support. I'd prefer ordering as soon as possible since there is a grinding limited-time event in FFXIV ending on June 24th.
This website can be used to compare prices between websites or countries. https://dropreference.com/fhome
I rarely shop online. I know some websites for used hardware in France are Leboncoin, Rakuten, eBay. New: Amazon.fr, Fnac, Darty, LDLC, Cdiscount, Topachat. If you can't be bothered optimizing the price and looking in both countries (since it does sound painful), feel free to mention trustworthy German websites so I don't get lost struggling to create accounts in another language and giving my payment information to shady places.
5. Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate)
No. I'll re-use mine for now.
6. Budget range? (Include tax considerations)
600-800€. I believe France includes VAT in prices.
After simulating a price estimation on PCpartpicker with random cheap parts + the refurbished RX 580, no HDD, no cooler, it seems I'll need at least 600€ due to the expensive 2TB SSD and 32GB RAM. 800€ isn't an absolute maximum, but it's what I paid for my old pre-built PC with a OS license in 2009 and it lasted me a long time (albeit a miserable time), so I'm eager to see to see what that gets me nowadays. Plus it stings to pay a lot for a dying game genre because companies whom I hate force me to upgrade.
The leftover budget perhaps could be spent on: more protection on the power supply so it doesn't damage my storage drives after a power outage, if that is even how it works (and how much would such safety cost?). It's rare but inevitably happens randomly a few times a year, perhaps during bad weather. > Enough processor to run two games at once or other programs while gaming > Maybe pick the refurbished RX 6600 for eye candy/future games/power saving.
7. WiFi or wired connection?
Wired.
8. Size/noise constraints?
Noise: preferably silent, but again, as a 2009 animal, I have no clue how controllable noise is. My PC, with only four fans in it (1 blowing out hot air to the back, 1 power supply, 1 processor stock cooler, 1 video card) has always sounded as if someone in the room next to me were blow-drying their hair or vacuum cleaning, so I've never heard what's the standard for "low noise" and how much silence costs, so if it costs a lot more, feel free to suggest several fan models. Of course I'll appreciate if it's silent just because I can hear my PC fans when I occasionally record song covers for fun, but besides that they haven't bothered me because it's not an annoying noise like coil whine, which is a sound I've only learned about recently while reading a review of a RX 6600 PowerFighter video card, I do hope not to hear that. I'm a gamer first so I prioritize cooling.
Size: no constraint, preferably enough to mount a couple HDDs, so better too big than too small.
9. Cololighting preferences?
Preferably: a basic black case, emitting as little visible light as possible in the dark. While it's heartbreaking since I love pink cases and pretty lights, I must blame it on biology; I currently use Cooler Master Elite 341 MicroATX Mid Tower Case and its darkness is the meta because it doesn't reflect light into my weak vampire gamer eyes. It's slightly behind my monitor so I have vision on a third of the side panel all the time.
I'd prefer no window, again regrettable because it's cool to monitor inside the case at a glance, but I fear I'll get blinded by whatever LED lingers inside of it.
I know humans aren't supposed to look at monitors in the dark but that's what works for me. Well lit rooms somehow tire me more, even at school. But here I've referred to myself as many things, human is not one of them. Perhaps I could work around this by placing something DIY in front light sources. So prioritize whatever case and fan has better cooling.
10. Any other specific needs?
Some questions: I've been torn on the debate about the two popular budget processors AMD Ryzen 5 3600 and Intel Core i3-12100F. I read that the 4 cores of 12100 are usually better at running a single game than the 6 cores of 3600 (which somehow is astronomically beloved by the PCpartpicker community). However I'll often have another program open such as Discord voice chat, YouTube on PotPlayer, a Chromium browser, watching Twitcth, or even a second game (low quality), so I can't just take the bare minimum for one game. Is that enough multi-tasking to warrant going for 6 cores? Are both of these processors overkill or too weak anyway? I'm just scared because I've only lived with 2 cores and just having the (terribly buggy) idle League of Legends launcher or Discord voice chat open cuts my performances by a lot. So as an ignorant normie who doesn't comprehend the other metrics such as GHz and threads, a 4-core processor doesn't look like a big jump after 14 years, though I could see it be just fine for users who run one game and no other program.
Here's my current system, if an archaeologist is curious what depth of Hell I come from. It was a pre-built PC I ordered for WoW and Aion at a small local tech store for Christmas 2009, for I believe about 800€: OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit (they initially gave me 32bit, at least it was a legit license) CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 240. Thermal paste: Cooler Master IC Essential E1 (first and last replaced in 2014, yeah I really neglected it to be fair, I kept coping "I'll upgrade soon anyway") GPU: nVidia GeForce 9800 GT Motherboard: M4A78-VM (AM2) (2 RAM ports, max 8GB) RAM: 4GB Single-Channel DDR2 @ 401MHz (6-6-6-18) (overprice 80€ replacement from 2015 another overprice DIMM that only lasted a few months, hence why I lost trust in hardware sellers, I don't even know the even a brand name, initially I got 2+1GB Kingston that died after 4 years), HDD: 465GB Seagate ST3500410SV ATA Device (I'm so proud it's still alive) SSD: Samsung 870 QVO 1TB ATA Device (from 2022) PSU: PC ATX LITEON PE-6301-08AP 300W? (cheap replacement from a tech friend when mine broke around 2018). Monitor VA1913wm-4 (1360x768@60Hz)

2024.06.04 15:13 Apprehensive_Bit1731 I ghosted my boyfriend because I thought he was cheating but know the truth now. I would do anything to get him back.

Me (24F) and my ex D (24M) were together for 1.5 years. We were in the same friend group in university and when we graduated, we both accepted job offers at the same company on different teams and moved in together. The third person in this sequence of events is T (25M) who was also in our university friend group and works in the same city. It was known in our group that he had a crush on me but I friendzoned pretty early on and he seemed respectful of me and D’s relationship. I thought my and D’s relationship was great and I felt so loved when I was with him but T surprisingly came to our place one day and said he had to tell me something when D went home to visit his parents for the weekend. He showed me photos of D hugging another girl and having a lunch date with her. I couldn’t see the other girl’s face in the photos and it was someone with red hair so I knew it wasn’t anyone we knew and it was clear to me that D was cheating. I didn’t even text or call D, I just packed all my things, wrote “I know” on a sticky note and put it on our dining table, took my car and left. I stayed at T’s place while I looked for a new place and he was my shoulder to cry on during this time. I let all of our friends know what happened and D was basically excommunicated from our friend group, despite him telling me and our friends that he never cheated. He asked me for what proof I had and I said I had pictures. I refused to send him the pictures I had from T and told him that he knew what he did and he would just lie and gaslight me if he saw the pictures. No one listened to him and he stopped trying to reach me or our friends after a few days after he came back from his parent’s place. Me and T started dating a month later.
Last week aka almost 10 months after I ghosted D, I ran into his cousin who studies at a nearby university. I always loved D’s relationship with her. She treated D like an older brother and she looked up to him so much, it was lovely to see that bond. I got to know her somewhat during my relationship with D but we never spoke after the breakup as she went away from a semester abroad and I was busy in my new relationship with T. We made plans to meet up for coffee and catch up. I assured her that no matter what happened between me and D, she was always welcome to reach out to me and I wanted to remain in touch if she was okay with that. She thanked me and told me that D never told her why we broke up and she wanted to know. I told her bluntly that D cheated on me. She was shocked but asked more questions like if I knew who the other girl was and so on. I told her I couldn’t see her face in the photos and all I knew is that it was someone with red hair. Her look changed immediately once she heard that and she looked upset. She reminded me that she had dyed her hair red around a year ago and there was a good chance that this other girl was actually her. I was shocked by this and more shocked that I didn’t remember she had red hair especially since we had met at least twice during her red hair period. I showed her the pictures and she also showed me pictures she had a waiter take of D and her when they went out for lunch a little under a year ago. The pictures were definitely taken on the same day and the girl I thought D was cheating with turned out to be his own cousin and he was completely innocent in all this.
Later that evening, I confronted T and asked if he knew that D’s cousin was the girl in the picture. T and D’s cousin have met before as D used to invite her to go out with our friend group whenever she was free. I asked T if this was all his elaborate plan to get me to finally go out with him by making me believe D was cheating, being there for me to make me think he would be a better partner. T admitted to everything including having pictures where D’s cousin’s face was also showing that he didn’t show me. I broke up with him on the spot and kicked him out of my apartment.
I felt so guilty for what I did to D. He lost his girlfriend, all his friends, and his relationship with his parents suffered over this. I knew at that moment that I was ready to do whatever it takes to get him back. I unblocked him on all my social media and I saw him. He had gained some muscle, grown out his hair and beard, he looked so handsome. He had reconnected with some of his high school friends that worked in the area. I saw that he was promoting his side business that he had always talked about starting. He had also been dating someone else, a barista at a local cafe, for just over six months and they went to Paris for their six month anniversary. I felt so jealous when I saw she had posted photos with him in front of the Eiffel Tower. Just from the photos, you can see how much they love each other.
I told all of our friends that D never cheated and I was wrong. I messaged him and said I was sorry for how I ended our relationship and didn’t even give him a chance to explain the situation and would do anything to be together again. Our friends all wanted to write a group apology to him for throwing him to the curb in the way we did. D never blocked us so we knew we could definitely get through to him. We all drafted the message together and everyone signed off on it in a group chat with D. Even four days later, he never opened, saw, or responded to our apologies. Yesterday, I went to the part of our company where D works during lunch break to look for him. He was sitting alone in the cafeteria and so I went and asked if we could speak. He said there was nothing to talk about and asked me to leave. I apologized to him and and asked for just two minutes of his time. I told him that I knew he didn’t cheat and I apologized for not believing him months ago. He told me that he was dating someone new and had no interest in looking into the past. I made the mistake of blowing up on him here. I raised my voice and told him that he’s dating a barista, someone who makes minimum wage and he’s denying someone who works as an engineer in one of the top companies in the world for a f—ing barista, I asked what she can give him that I can’t, I said I’ve known him for six years and she has known him for six months. D just responded by saying she’s peaceful and that’s already worth more to him than anything I could offer. He said that my outburst showed him exactly why he would never take me back. I yelled “FU D” and got looks from the other people in the cafeteria. D didn’t say anything after that and just got up and left.
If I had any chance of getting back with D before, it’s definitely gone now. I haven’t been able to sleep or rest and I just keep crying. I would do anything to feel D’s warm embrace right now but I ruined it. I told some friends what happened and now everyone is bashing me. What do I do? I need some positivity please.

Prequel (Chapters 1 to 16)
1. Rise of a Valkyrie
First ¦ Previous ¦ Royal Road ¦ Patreon
Weslan Genny stumbled as he ran through a cold mountain valley. The uphill slope stretched for miles ahead, but no matter hard he climbed, he never reached the top. The footing was loose, and shale and pebbles always tripped him up. Sometimes, he saw giant boulders on the path and he tried to hide behind them, but the creatures cowering there hissed and shooed him away.
She was hunting him again. Whenever he stopped, he saw movement in the shadows, and he raced to get away.
But she kept getting closer.
Weslan ran, and it felt like he would never stop running. A voice told him that if he could only turn once and confront what was behind him, he would be free of her. But he didn’t dare. He was doomed to run.
“Coward,” spat the shadow, as she closed on him, reaching out spectral arms to trap him.
Caught, Weslan fell to the ground where he was pinned by a horrific black shape. Now she had him, and she would eat his insides.
“Worthless,” she spat in his face. “Miserable wretch.”
“No!” Weslan screamed as claws tore at his face and stomach.
Sharp blades ripped through his flesh, as teeth bit into his arm. They ground down hard, shattering bone and ripping muscle and tendons. Weslan tried to shout again as his hand went numb, but another hand grabbed his jaw. He watched in horror as the limb morphed into a spike, and the shadow raised it over his face, poised to strike down.
“Weslan!” she called in a harsh voice, as cold as the void.
He awoke to a cold sweat, and bed sheets wrapped in knots around his legs. The clock on the bedstand read 4.a.m. A glass of water helped him calm down, though he kept the light on as he tried to get back to sleep. He probably wouldn’t. Some nights he would lie awake for hours, thinking of nothing while waves of electricity shook his body.
That was his life since the crash. He didn’t remember it, but a kindly female doctor had explained everything to him and his father. Weslan’s employer had been flying him and his colleagues through the mountains of Caldera, until their transport had suffered engine failure and attempted a crash landing.
Weslan and his fellow passengers, they were told, were all very lucky to walk away with mild cases of amnesia. Tragically, his former girlfriend, Rose Djallen, had been killed. There was barely enough of her left to bury. Strangely, Weslan didn’t cry at the news, but felt only calm acceptance. None of them could remember much about the several months they had spent working for a top-secret laboratory, sponsored by the Helvetic League’s military.
Once in a while, scraps of memory came flashing back. There were tunnels and caves, and crystals the size of a house. Weslan wasn’t able to make sense of the confusing images, but one kept flooding back to haunt his nightmares. The dark woman. She walked through his mind whenever she wanted, attacking him, laughing at him. Everything he did and thought, she watched, and judged.
The worst part was the constant sensation that he had to flee. To his father’s disappointment he left Caldera, finding work in a research lab on Raisa. Then he had provoked a furious argument by abandoning the field of biology, in which he had distinguished himself since his school days.
“You’re walking away from your destiny, you stupid boy,” his father had yelled at him through the video link. “Everything I’ve built, everything I’ve done for you over the years, and now you think you’re too good for it?”
Weslan couldn’t reply. There was no way to explain his decision. There were rationalizations, and guesses, but the only thing that mattered was that he couldn’t sit still. She would catch up with him. Instead, he chose to apply for a job in one of the League’s regulatory offices.
“You were always a troublesome child,” his father said bitterly. “I’m not surprised your mother left.”
Weslan wanted to hurt him then, and tell him that he was a cruel, miserable liar, obsessed only with his own legacy. But he couldn’t. He knew from experience that nothing he said would be heard.
After that call, Weslan began to read. He consumed everything he could about society, crime, politics and war. The knowledge brought him the conclusion he wanted to find. His willpower was nothing. He was like a mouse, watching the world from a hideaway, while clumsy, foolish humans stomped about in their pointless lives. In the near distance, the dark lady cheered his discovery.
When he didn’t feel fear, he felt spite. Cold, sneering, hateful spite. He couldn’t stop—it was like a disease. The dark lady told him that he was right to hate. He saw the truth that most people were too cowardly to see: the cruelty that formed the bedrock of their world.
Then he received a call that stunned him. Hieron Djallen, Rose’s father, wanted him to travel to Earth. A private yacht had been arranged for a direct transit from Raisa. Weslan couldn’t even imagine the level of power and influence required to make that happen. Hieron was the most powerful fusion magnate in the frontier systems, but surely not part of the core world’s inner circle? And even if he was, what could such people want with his daughter’s much less distinguished ex-boyfriend? Of course he couldn’t refuse.
The flight took several days, which Weslan spent in his stately cabin, reading, when he could manage to calm his mind. When he had to get out, he paced the deck, deep in thought, and ignoring the dutifully servile crew. The staggering opulence of the vessel and its many entertainments meant as much to him as a cardboard replica, and his only concern was the eternal question of what he must do next.
Bypassing entirely the normal interstellar border controls, the Yacht landed outside Geneva. Vineyards and mansions sprawled across an undulating landscape. A classic electric powered vehicle drove Weslan towards an almost seamless mountain wall stretching from one horizon to another. The road took them through a gap that split the range in two, where a deep canyon wound its way through the imposing contours. High on the shoulder of one massif, a fortress jutted out over luscious green forests, and the vivid blue river below.
The silent driver led him over a drawbridge, and through the fort’s main gate where grim faced security guards took possession of him. They ushered him into a secure room where he was scanned and interrogated about anyone he met on his journey. Then, they showed him the way into a courtyard, where a smiling butler greeted him, and wished him a most pleasing visit to the Fort l’Ecluse, private home to the Cardinal of the Adjudicate.
Weslan’s mind went into overdrive. A military project had failed, and he had been involved. He had betrayed his father, and left Caldera. His flight from Rackeye, the fledgling capital of the League’s frontier presence, could only be seen as desertion from his duty as a Helvetic citizen. Now the Adjudicate’s cultural enforcers would want to make an example of him to the whole galaxy.
The butler led him deeper into the fort, and then the mountain itself, following a long tunnel that brought them to an elevator. Weslan fought for rationality to win out over his rising anxiety. They didn’t need to bring him to Earth with such expense to make an example out of him. They certainly wouldn’t want to involve Hieron, who had received an outpouring of grief and condolences from the galaxy at large over the accident. In any case, what good would fear do him when he was completely in their power? On Earth, a citizen couldn’t cross the street without being scanned by a dozen security checkpoints.
After a short wait, the elevator doors opened to reveal a hallway of sumptuous decoration. Gold-framed portraits lined the walls, interrupted by evenly spaced marble columns. Plants and flowers that were considered a luxury on Caldera blossomed from alcoves. The butler gestured to a large, well-lit room ahead, then left Weslan to continue alone.
Pulse humming, he stepped forward into a wide lounge that looked out on a breathtaking view of the landscape. In the distance, the gleaming towers of Geneva crowded the skyline, capped by the sharp mountain peaks beyond.
“Do you like it?” a voice said.
Weslan looked around to see a cheerful, middle-aged woman reclining on a sofa. She got up, smoothed her dress, then stepped towards him.
“The fort was renovated by one of my predecessors, Murayama the third. It used to be so dull and utilitarian. I imagine it had a historical use, but I don’t see what bland lumps of concrete have to tell us about the past, other than that people like to kill each other.”
“Uh…” Weslan stammered. “Madam Cardinal, it’s an honor to meet you.”
She raised an eyebrow. “It’s Cardinal Crayland, actually. The title is gender neutral. I imagine you’re wondering why I brought you out here?”
“Yes, I can’t imagine… well, yes.”
“Mr Djallen will join us in a moment; I just sent him a message. I have no doubt that he will show his strong attachment to you. But I wanted to make sure you understood that I have no such interest. I serve the League, Mr Genny, and its hundred billion citizens. Their lives and prosperity matter much more to me than my own. And yours.”
Weslan swallowed. Her blunt introduction was almost reassuring, even if it foreshadowed a difficult future. Here at last he had found someone who talked sense, instead of denying the terror of existence. But she also obviously expected to do something about it, and he wanted to hear more.
“Yes, Cardinal Crayland. I understand.”
She smiled again, and ushered him into a chair, before sitting down opposite him.
“Your doctor has provided me with a report on your health. Insomnia, night terrors, and anxiety, he said.”
Weslan nodded, even as he suppressed a flush of anger at the violation of his privacy. It didn’t matter. Something was going to happen.
“Yet you refused all medication,” she continued. “Do you drink?”
“No.”
“Drugs?”
“Absolutely not.”
Crayland looked at him with curiosity and leaned forward. “Why?”
Weslan had to think for a moment before understanding. So many of his decisions now came through instinct. “I don’t like the idea that my mind is dependent on a chemical to function. It’s a weakness.”
“Indeed?” Crayland said as her eyebrows raised. “Are you Helvetic idealism personified? How about your fitness?”
“I run.” Weslan did his best to ignore the cackling of the dark lady in the background.
“What do you remember about Allana Rayker?”
A bolt of lightning seared through his mind, but left only shock and pain in its wake. The name meant something, even if he couldn’t grasp anything substantial. Even stranger, the dark lady’s cackling had ceased, and she was watching him in silence.
“I…” He stopped and thought hard, but couldn’t find any words that would be useful. “Nothing. I’m sorry—I recognize the name, but I don’t know why.”
Crayland watched him with cold, suspicious eyes. Then there was the crash of a door flying open, and Hieron Djallen was striding into the room, his face full of concern. Weslan stood and was shocked to find himself grabbed in a bear hug.
Hieron’s words flew quickly. “Weslan, by god, I am so happy to see you here; we’ve been so worried about you since the funeral. Awful to hear about you and your father—I tried to talk sense into him, but he can be such a damned fool. How is Raisa? How are you doing? Please sit down, let’s hear everything. Cardinal, can’t we get something to eat and drink?”

2024.06.04 14:21 harrypotter1306 Draining friendship

Hi, I'm Sara from Malaysia. I'm a 21-year-old female. I will list my friends' names below (fake names): Sam, age 21, male; Uday, age 22, male; Aby, age 21, female; Shirley, age 21, female.
Sam and Uday have been best friends since they were 14 years old, in Form 3 at our secondary school. Uday and Shirley have also been best friends at the same school since they were 14, I guess. We all went to the same secondary school.
Aby, Shirley, and I became close to Sam when we were in the same class in the science stream during Forms 4 and 5 when we were around 16 and 17 years old. Everything was good, and Aby and I became best friends with Sam. He was my first male best friend, and everything was fine until 2021.
Sam and Uday would fight and reconcile sometimes. Around late 2021, Sam and Uday fought and never spoke to each other again. Sam knew that I was close to Uday through Aby. In the first week of April 2023, Sam, Aby, and I hung out. Sam and Aby advised me that Uday is bad, that he is not happy when people are happy, that he gets jealous easily, curses a bit, and has a negative mindset. I didn't deny that. I just kept the friendship going and ignored his negative mindset because he always helped me and gave me advice like a big brother.
Around the third week of April 2023, Aby, Uday, and I hung out because we had a misunderstanding with Shirley at that time. After Sam saw an Instagram story of us hanging out, things got worse. He got a bit angry or upset with me and Aby. Aby told me that he was upset that we hung out with Uday. I replied to his status, but he didn't tell me anything. Soon after that, he stopped sending me Instagram reels and removed and unfollowed me from his Instagram account. Then he stopped following me and sending reels on TikTok.
In May, which is my birthday month, he didn't post an Instagram story wishing me a happy birthday. He just sent me a message on WhatsApp saying he was on a social media break. I was upset but didn't say anything. He wasn't upset with Aby, and her birthday is in June. He posted an Instagram story wishing her a happy birthday, suddenly not on a social media break.
Time flew by, and his birthday was last November. I wished him a happy birthday on WhatsApp. Then I sent him a follow request on Instagram, followed him, and posted an Instagram story wishing him a happy birthday. I thought things might get better. This year, around 2024, he just wished me a happy birthday on WhatsApp and didn't post an Instagram story. What's happening, though?
Aby's birthday is very near, and I don't know what to say. Of course, he will post an Instagram story for her. All these things keep bothering me, and I also don't speak daily to Uday. It feels like this friendship is going to make me a villain in other people's stories. Shirley is Uday's best friend too. She didn't personally message me a birthday wish but posted a story for me. Uday wished me feel like I'm his favorite person on my birthday.
So, I don't know, bro. Part of me feels like I should unfollow Sam on Instagram and not see his story, as it's better if he doesn't know what I'm doing and vice versa. He saw all my Instagram stories, like who mentioned me on Instagram, and he deliberately unblocked Uday to see whether he wished me or not. Another part of me feels like if I stop sending snaps, unfollow him, and don't mention him on my Instagram story for his birthday, the efforts will be gone. I don't know whether I will post for him or not on his birthday. Day by day, my sudden thoughts keep bothering me. I feel like I wish people a happy birthday on time and post stories for them, but some don't even wish me, they just stalk. So, I'm thinking of returning the same effort: if you wish me, I'll wish you; if you post for me, I'll post for you. I've been doing that for 2 to 3 years. Not all people return the same energy.
So, my Reddit people, any advice? I'm afraid of what other people will think if I do that, like removing followers and stop posting. Is my ego and self-respect coming after 2 years? I don't know. Why does Sam want to see my Instagram story if he doesn't like Uday wishing me?
