The cruelty of the medical system and gaslighting- my final rant before I move on

2024.05.20 04:10 disgruntledjobseeker The cruelty of the medical system and gaslighting- my final rant before I move on

I just want to let it out. My recent diagnoses have been so enlightening, but thanks to mainly being covered by my insurance, cost me so little. A little over $200 for out-of-pocket blood tests. A covered appointment at a private neurologist office with a small surcharge. An MRI covered by insurance. A second opinion MRI read just to be sure coming in at $250.
I picked up my 21 day course of doxycycline from the Walgreens and wanted to cry. It cost less than $4.
$454 dollars. That’s the cost to finally start healing. In the end, that’s all that it took. A cost I finally paid, deciding that maybe doctors don’t all know best.
Meanwhile, what did it cost me? Years of self-blame, self-hate. No doctor ever tried to dissuade me that my obesity was the root of my problems. In fact, most suggested it. Before I was obese, it was decidedly chronic fatigue with not a single Lyme or other parasite test run on me. Recently, it was blamed on my autism.
I have data-rooted answers now. Financially, the answers didn’t cost that much. Emotionally, I am broke inside from the years of wondering, searching, not understanding, falling, getting back up.
I put together my entire medical history into one document linking to tests, photos, conversations with my doctors through our webhealth platform over the years. It tells a story so clear, there were signs something wasn’t right. A spider bite in a bullseye pattern. Constantly triggered lymphs, random indicators of certain organs performing not right that go away, sky-high CRP, strep infections that weren’t, inflamed joints and cartilage, angry large red rashes, Raynaud’s, sciatica, numb feet and tingling. No doctor put it together or even bothered to look even though it was all there. No doctor saw beyond one specific episode for which there would occasionally be a prescription. But when you put them together, it is a story of years. And from this angle, it is a sad story.
$4 start to improved health, in an orange pill bottle makes me both so full of hope and yet so sad.

2024.05.20 01:27 Kooky_Persimmon_9785 Being neurodivergent is the natural state of the human mind.

The more I think about it the more I believe that being “neurodivergent” is actually the natural response to living in this day and age inside a highly structured society.
And by neurodivergent I mean the characteristics such as sensitivity to bright lights and loud noise, other sensory issues, eye contact, compliance with social norms, symptoms of ADHD like hyperactivity / not sitting still, etc.
For example, for sensory issues, when we lived in nature which we did for hundreds of thousands of years before we started building towns and cities, we would not experience artificial lights and loud noise could indicate danger or unnaturalness. Similarly eye contact could be a sign of threat which is the case in some other mammals and even in some cultures today. Prolonged eye contact and speech might not have been a necessity for a long time until the modern age, where we live in high proximity to each other and language has developed so much that there are a hundred ways to say one thing.
And in the context of work or school, sitting for 8+ hours a day is just not something the human body was made for IMO. We already know inactivity causes many diseases like obesity, heart disease, arthritis, cancer and so on.
All the things related to “social issues” that are associated with neurodivergence is simply the conflict between natural human tendencies and the environment which we live in. I’ve travelled to a lot of countries and found that general human behaviour and societal “rules” varies massively by country or culture and even microcultures like small isolated towns. Which leads me to believe that “neurotypicalness” is not a single set of universal characteristics, rather it depends on the society around you and its specific norms.
I realise that there are varying degrees of neurodivergence and it’s not a black and white separation of neurodivergent vs neurotypical. But basically how neurodivergent you are is how much you diverge from societal norms, rather than how much you diverge from a normal human behaviour (without societal interference). It could be argued that adaptability is a key characteristic of the human brain, however I don’t think this is true beyond adapting to your family or tribe in order to form close connections to ensure survival. It definitely does not extend to a society of 10 million people. Furthermore adaptability in terms of synaptic plasticity work by specific mechanisms of reward and repetition and other things that are not related to social adaptability. So every brain has the ability to be synaptically modified but this is NOT the same as social conformity.
I’m interested to see what others think apologies for the long text

2024.05.20 00:25 throwthrowthrow45689 Greyhound not eating after being ill.

Hi all, My soon-to-be 12 year old greyhound is not eating after being hospitalized for heat exhaustion this past week. Long story short, we moved cross-country and the journey was too stressful for him - excessive panting, weakness, couldn't walk, severe hyperthermia. He was hospitalized for 4 days. During those 4 days, his paws and joints became swollen, vet there thinks he might have vasculitis and polyarthropathy (infectious vs autoimmune - lab work pending). He's on prednisone, pentoxifylline, doxycycline and metronidazole. . Anyway, since he's been home, he still hasn't eaten much (wasn't eating much in the hospital either - they had to give him an appetite stimulant a few times), he's refusing his kibble, chicken chunks, treats, and isn't drinking water unless I put it under him and even then, refuses sometimes. He's getting stronger with walking and getting up from his bed and generally looks better but just not eating. . - Is his appetite just down because he was recently ill? What can I do? He's never been this ill so I'm clueless on this. - What's my threshold for calling the vet back/taking him back to emergency? - Anyone dealt with the vasculitis and polyarthropathy thing?
Thanks!

2024.05.19 23:54 AlgaeConnect641 Confused and need opinions 🥲

Hi I’m new here, I live in Indiana, may 3rd my family and I went on a hike in a marsh area, and we walked into a giant tick mess. I’ve never seen a tick in my life before this, even being an outdoors person. We had hundreds on us, from head to toe, and we were miles away from our car. We stripped down and got as many off of us as we could find, when we got home, I had two attached to me, one deep enough that it stung when we got it off. But no rashes or anything followed. Except days later, I started getting more tired, didn’t put two and two together and honestly completely forgot about the whole situation. It was harder for me to wake in the morning, and I was just more fatigued during the day, I workout 6 days a week and found it harder to workout. About 2 weeks go by, and my fatigue is out of this world. I can fall asleep any second, I struggle to even move. A few days ago, I started getting severe muscle fatigue, like my arms feel like I’m carrying weights, definitely something I’ve never experienced before, I decided to see my dr and bring up the ticks, she immediately thought I have Lyme, she said this is too much of a coincidence to not be. I’m waiting blood tests but I’m feeling worse each day, now my body aches, and my neck is stiff and hurts, my stomach is constantly hurting. I feel like I have motion sickness 24/7, like that weakness and nausea that comes with motion sickness, that exact feeling. I’m just questioning everything though, what are the odds that a tick on me probably less than 2 hours gave me Lyme? Unless I missed one and it stayed attached longer than that, which could be a possibly having so many on us. I’m hoping this is just a bug of some sort, and so does my dr. My other blood work looks great, so no signs of infection or anything. My ast has doubled (still in normal range though) than what it was 6 months ago, it went from 15 to 32, which is the highest it’s ever been for me personally. That’s the only thing that stuck out to me that’s different on my blood work. I was prescribed doxycycline on Friday, went to pick it up and was informed that it’s not safe to take while breastfeeding and I nurse my son. I’m calling tomorrow to ask to be put on something safe, because it would take to long to wean and I want to be treated asap. Thank you for taking the time to read.

2024.05.19 23:36 gambola Permethrin/ tick newbie questions

Hi campers,
My partner and I are coming to the States for a month in September, during which time we’ll mostly be tent camping. Having followed this sub for a while I note that most folks recommend permethrin as a tick prevention measure but I’m a bit confused about the best way for us to use it. We don’t really have ticks here in the UK (although strangely enough my partner found one on him this week so we do have a few!). I wonder if I could get some advice on a few questions please (sorry if these are silly questions!)
  1. We are travelling around for a month, between Montana, California, Nevada, and Arizona. Google assures me that Lyme carrying ticks are low in those areas but I realise there are other diseases so we’re keen to be on the safe side. We aren’t used to getting medical care in the US, so if we had a bite that seemed concerning or had any symptoms of Lyme etc, where is the best place to seek medical advice? Are antibiotics or other treatments available at pharmacies? We’d probably be able to get a dose or two of doxycycline at home to bring with us if that’s sensible, or is that overkill?
  2. I was thinking perhaps it’s best to treat all our hiking gear and clothing with permethrin before we leave, but we have a cat. I can’t quite make sense of the cat safety issues, is it a big risk to hang everything outdoors and let it dry? We could do that at our first camp instead but I guess then we’ll already be around ticks and I don’t know if it’s ok to spray that stuff around at a campsite? We are getting some gear when we arrive (tent, chairs) rather than flying it over, so I guess we would also need to do it for those things anyway?
  3. I’ve read that permethrin treats fabrics for up to 6 weeks, but also that you should wash treated clothes before wearing them again, so I’m a bit confused. We likely won’t have many laundry stops so clothing will be reworn and maybe washed in a sink here and there. Should we be re-treating stuff? Is it ok to re-wear things a few times?
  4. Is there anything we shouldn’t use permethrin on or should we just go ham on everything?
  5. I see that most advice is to do a tick check in the evening and have a good scrub in the shower. We may not always have access to showers so if anyone has any tried and tested checking processes or techniques, hit me up!
Sincerely, a very excited but slightly scared Brit who is mildly convinced she will get tick-ed, bear-ed or scorpion-ed.

2024.05.19 21:15 Technical-Use-3921 My take on Medicine 2.0 vs. 3.0 have mercy lol!

My take on Medicine 2.0 vs. 3.0 have mercy lol!
J/K I can take the abuse just let me have it...
Medicine 2.0 vs. Medicine 3.0
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” - Benjamin Franklin
Peter Attia is a practicing MD and is one of the leading experts of longevity- which is ironic because he hates the word longevity. Attia has coined the terms Medicine 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0. Medicine 1.0 was the time when medicine did not use the scientific method and often would do more harm than good. Think bloodletting 40% of George Washington’s blood the day he died. Around the 17th century the scientific method started to be used, and according to Attia by the 19th century medicine 1.0 transitioned to medicine 2.0. With the utilization of antibiotics and vaccines alone we have saved and extended millions of lives utilizing this method.
For the past 200 years we have been using the scientific method and have taken it as far as it can go. Medicine 2.0 needs the patient to first get sick in order to fit into an algorithm that identifies and reacts to the problem that is present. It is a system that incentivizes reactive medical treatment instead of eliminating the illness begore it ever occurs. In 2017-2018 Harvard study found that the half-life of medical information was 18 months. Translation, every 18-month period that passes eliminates/modifies what your doctor learned in medical school by 50%. Doctors need to be constantly researching to maintain the edge on medicine that they had when leaving medical school. Medicine 2.0 did an amazing job of getting us from point A to point B, but now is the time to transition us to point C.
“We have reached the limits of medicine 2.0 capacity, and if longevity is something we are aspiring for, we need a new strategy.” —Peter Attia
Medicine 3.0 accepts the tools and advancements made by 2.0 but has a focus on individualization, education, and optimization for longevity. To optimize health, it will need to be nuanced and specific to each patient’s biology. The role of the doctor being a cookie cutter one stop shop for everything health needs to change. A doctor does not need to be a patient’s psychologist, nutritionist, exercise physiologist, etc. Prevention needs to be the priority as medicine moves forward. In ‘Outlive’ Attia wrote about the mystic centurions that live long healthy lives in the “blue zones.” He stated that they [the centurions] live long not because they get sick and go to the doctor to mitigate their illnesses [medicine 2.0], but they simply are able to delay these common illnesses into their old age. Reinforcing that prevention is significantly more important than waiting until someone is sick to start interventions.
This new shift puts the patient in the driver seat of their own health. A relationship with the doctor is created and built on trust. Education is important in this transition to optimization because the patient needs to understand and own their individualized plan. With the speed at which medical information is changing you need to be educated in best practices by the time of your next checkup. I am sick of seeing doctors that are obese, not staying on top of developments of modern medicine, and spending less than 15 minutes with their patients on visits. It took me four years to find a PCP that I can trust. I trust him because on my first visit he educated me about statins, and we were able to improve my bloodwork to not be at risk of cardiovascular disease [prevention.] The internet is a hotspot for misinformation, but if you have a doctor you can trust and have great resources you can read then together you can make an individualized medical plan that is nuanced and tailored to your needs.
The excellent news is the bulk of prevention and education interventions are close to free of cost. The plan typically is not as sexy as we like to think it is. Attia’s five pillars of optimization of healthspan are exercise, sleep, nutrition, mental health, and supplementation. These are the pathways to prevention of chronic disease and a happier, stronger, and healthier life.
P.S. Attia’s best 4 min. Video about health you will watch today... Okay maybe ever!

2024.05.19 19:38 Pure_Translator_5103 Ongoing health issues. Should an AN be considered or dismissed?

Have had inner ear discomfort both sides, neck discomfort, inflammation, slightly swollen feeling, for over a year straight. Tinnitus and hyperacusis started 3-4 months ago. Tinnitus has slowly been increasing in loudness. Gets louder when I turn, move my head, open mouth wide. Have had extreme fatigue, heavy brain fog for over a year. Dizziness for about 3 months. A nuero ordered mri of brain which showed nothing. They were ruling out stroke, etc.
ENT did vestibular testing after 4 visits over 3 months of not getting better, got diagnosed a month ago with vestibular neuritis. Seen 3 different practitioners as same ent clinic. They don’t have much to offer or seem willing to help much further other than vestibular physical therapy order. One PA says Eustachian tube dysfunction as well, and says the tinnitus, hyperacusis, inner ear discomfort both sides, occasional distorted sound and slight sound fluctuation in right ear, which tested weak on VNG vestibular test, is probably from ETD. He prescribed nasal sprays and a month after starting fluticasone is when tinnitus started followed by hyperacusis. If it is etd it’s affecting both ears. Blood Allergy tests didn’t show much. Hearing test 4 months ago was normal, tho the test seems biased and not great and was before onset of T and H. Have had jaw discomfort and crackling more frequently the last 2 months. Neck muscle pains as well. Seeing dentist this week about tmj.
Feel like I’m in constant motion, dizzy, which lessens when laying down.
Current pcp said it was all mental, mentioned anti depressants, which I was on for years prior to health issues and it stopped working. He would only refer to a mental health counselor who knew something was not right and then I got VN diagnosis. Pcp makes me feel like a bad person, him and PA dismissed me at every one of 4 visits, so I can’t go there anymore and am waiting for new pcp.
Another un linked issue is heavy eye floaters both eyes, strange vision sensation, light sensitivity. This came on within weeks of feeling inner ear issues. Ophthalmologist did not see anything alarming. They are saying floaters with age. I am 35, nearsighted. He did not know much about autoimmune, Lyme, other possible causes, so he Agreed to send me to a retina specialist, which is in a few weeks.
I’m lined up to get a different opinion from a different ENT clinic, tho I don’t have my hope up for much help.
Was originally told I had mold toxicity.
Have had 2 aura migraine type events in the last 2 months. Some days wake up with headache at back of neck, head joint area. I’ve been to so many doctors and practitioners in Tx and Massachusetts, where I am now. My life has been destroyed for over a year and getting new issues and symptoms as time goes on vs better. Working with a dr on possible late stage Lyme, tho no 100% diagnosis. I am beyond exhausted and desperate to get better. I haven’t been able to work, given up my second job and big love of playing live music, singing, guitar. And my life career of woodworking has been impossible. The fatigue and brain fog, cognitive issues are terrible. Exertional malaise mental and physical activities happens quickly. Feel like I’m in a daze. Weak and achey busy. At the beginning of health downturn I had soow onset of fatigue turn heavy pain from herniated low spine discs 18 months ago. That nerve pain still exists most days, especially if I try to be even lightly active and lift anything over 15 pounds. I’m not overweight. All lab tests that have been done have been normal aside from a vibrant labs test showing 5 bands reactive igg Lyme. And 2 bands igg Babesia. Have tried so many supplements, clean organic diet. If you’ve read this far thank you. Any insight would be appreciated.

2024.05.19 19:07 PiranhaPlantFan Not my fault, I was born this way, blame the Sociopath!

In many psychopathy related online debates, there is this pseudo-scientific distinction between Sociopathy (environment) and Psychopathy (born with) and all associated misconceptions about how neurology works. Here a quick overview about how the misconception of these beliefs are classified in academic literature, followed by a quick criticism on their own classification, followed by the consequences. Bypassly, a bunch of information I share with you between the lines:
"Genetic determinism is linked to essentialist reasoning, which can be understood as the view that every entity, including biological traits, contains an immutable underlying essence that predicts similarities between members of a group (Gelman, 2003). Genetic determinism can be regarded as the biological component of essentialism (Keller, 2005), but it is generally considered to be a lay concept deserving independent and focused attention. As Dar-Nimrod and Heine (2011) argue, essentialist thinking can be reinforced by a superficial understanding of genetics, in which genes take the role of concrete placeholders for essentialist ideas. Such an understanding of genetics tends to inaccurately attribute an overactive, primary, or even exclusive determining power to the gene. However, recent developments in genomics and epigenetics have reinforced the notion of gene action as probabilistic and mutually interdependent with the environment, (...)" (Genetics Education p. 108)
In contrast, the view that humans are born as a blank sheet of paper, is a view held by a popular philosopher those opinion is essential to many contemporary views on personal identity and personhood in general.
"The empiricist philosopher John Locke expressed the idea that humans acquire all or almost all of their behavioral traits from nurture, claiming that the human mind is a tabula rasa, and that mental functions and behaviors develop solely from environmental influences" (p. 109)
Since biological determinism is considered a "layman's belief", where does this idea come from? There have been studies looking at the distribution of said theory across cultures and is considered a universal concept (p. 112) The study looked into how much genetic-influence is overestimated across Europe, North America, and South America on traits.
"Gericke et al. (2017) reported that bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, alcoholism and, to a lesser degree, intelligence, severe depression, attention defcit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and violent behavior scored lower for genetic deterministic beliefs among the participants of the study, when compared to heritability scores from the literature, whereas only two traits—related to the biological component (diabetes and breast cancer)—scored higher, indicating genetic overattribution. Hence, there was, among the Brazilian students involved in the study, a tendency to attribute less power to genes for social and mental traits, compared to biological traits." (p. 113)
Without going into further detail, the results show that the opposite of the hypothesis is true. Most people underestimate genetical influence. Another striking result is that there is still a strong underlying belief in mind-body dualism; with phenotypical traits associated with "genetics" and mental traits to be considered "environmental". For example, ADHD's is indeed strongly linked to genetics. is often considered to be environmental or a choice, by layman".
This is also indicative that people are willing to blame for mental disabilities, believed to have control over, but not to external forms of disability, even when the risk factor is increased by one's actions (for example, in the case of breast cancer).
Interestingly, genetic determinism is not that popular among layman as thought, despite being mistakenly proposed in much literature.
"While some traits—the same fve in each country—showed elevated rates of genetic overattribution, rarely did a majority of respondents endorse a deterministic response. To conclude, this large study in three countries from three different continents did not support the idea that genetic determinism is a general and widespread belief. This general finding of low overall genetic overattribution was also reported by Gericke et al. (2017) in the same sample of Brazilian undergraduates (using a distinct analytical approach), as well as by Willoughby et al. (2019) for laypeople in the United States. However, it is at odds with other prior literature (e.g., Dar-Nimrod & Heine, 2011; Keller, 2005; Nelkin & Lindee, 2004). Several authors have previously reported BGD to be a widespread phenomenon in common discourse (Keller, 2000; Nelkin & Lindee, 2004), in the media (Condit et al., 2001), and in school textbooks (Gericke et al., 2014)." (p. 118 [this quote is probably the most interesting one])
For those who got curious now about "what to belief then everything thought before turns out to be wrong", here comes salvation:
"Although the topic is complex, there is consensus that the interplay between genes and environment is a core idea of genetic literacy (Boerwinkel et al., 2017). Fifty-seven experts participating in a delphi study brought to light the genetics knowledge that is relevant for laypeople in the twenty-frst century. Nine knowledge categories of genetic literacy emerged. One of them addressed understanding M. Hammann (*) · J. C. S. Zang Zentrum für Didaktik der Biologie, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, Münster, T. Heemann Kardinal-von-Galen-Gesamtschule Nordwalde, Nordwalde, Germany 128 multiple and interactive causation of genetic phenomena: “Multiple genes and multiple environmental factors interact in the development of most traits.” Some experts even argued that gene-environment interaction was the most relevant category of all." (p. 128)
In regards to psychopathy and the resurfacing debate about heritable traits, it is important to note that "teach that the environment can influence cell functioning through changes at the protein level" and " that environmental factors can cause mutations in genes, or alter gene expression". In other words, genes are not hard-coded stones flowing through our bodies like gears, but mutable and flexible, soft and alterable molecules-compounds.
Unfortunately, however,
"educational standards inadequately address the impact of the environment on genes and their products (Dougherty et al., 2011), high-school textbooks provide only limited discussions on genetic and environmental influences on multi-factorial diseases (Hicks et al., 2014) and omit the impact of the environment on gene expression altogether (Aivelo & Uitto, 2015; Martínez-Gracia et al., 2006), trait-formation tasks in high-school textbooks hardly ever address the role of the environment in trait formation (Heemann & Hammann, 2020), internet websites fail to address gene–environment interactions (Cheng et al., 2008), and media portrayals emphasize genetic infuences and diminish environmental on"
The educational services' attempt to combat biological determinism and racism kinda backed-fired, when this led to many students largely adopting Locke's view, as seen in the following pages of the quoted paper, which is that people are a product of their environment and education, neglecting the genetic influence. On the other hand, people who are "self-taught", are probably mostly confronted with a pseudo-intellectual oversimplification of biological determinism, leading to "self-taught people", to accept "the harsh reality" in contrast to "liberal educational systems in which everything is soft switching environmental factors". This could also explain the phenomena of LARPerpathy.
If we want to get political, this also explains why a lot of younger people are "left-leaning".
Hopefully, this helps to understand why the nurture vs nature debate itself, is outdated and arguably a layman debate in itself.

2024.05.19 19:01 Pure_Translator_5103 Ongoing vestibular and other problems.

2024.05.19 18:03 Pingaleon A little bit more than 3 months: update and a new flare

Hello together!
After my first post here one month ago, I actually recovered a little bit, the three weeks after that I was able to cycle to university (distance 6 km) and participate in my classes, although with some discomfort and sometimes slight pain. I thought, again, that I was out of the acute phase.
My general practioner also ruled out lyme disease and now agrees that the cipro is the most likely cause for my symptoms. He researched a bit about the side effects and told me, that the only thing proven to help recover is time.
Last weekend, was probably the best moment since I was floxed, but unfortunalty, this week my symptoms worsened again, especially since Thursday. I already felt more pain while cycling to uni, and in the afternoon I walked a few 100 meters, where somehow my joint pain increased considerably. It is still elevated and quite debilitating, just like last month when I made my first post. I hope this is just a short flare and not a sign of worsening symptoms.
My symptoms are still the same: joint pain with some tingling, mainly at my knees, ankles, wrists and somtimes elbows. On bad days also at my shoulders and back. I also developed a large number of eye floaters 2 weeks after taking the cipro, but they seem to be getting better, or I got used to them.
I don't know if my flares could be connected to activity, as there were days where I was more active without flaring, or if it could be caused by stress, because I was more worried about my health the days before.
Thankfully, I still don't have CNS side effects, and it seems that I can still eat everything without it affecting my symptoms, although I currently stay away from coffee or alcohol.

This is my Bandy(we're new here)
Hi, this is my Bandy - she's an almost 6 year old girl (Chow/White Swiss Shepherd Mix) I adopted when she was 1yr.
Saw a picture of her online from a rescue in FL that was planning a transport up north and I knew she was the one for me.
The day before she was to be transported the rescue frantically called me to say she tested + for heartworm and Lyme disease... "Did I still want her??"
Are you kidding...YES! The first year was rough for her with the painful heartworm treatment and tons of antibiotics for the tick bourne illnesses but she made it through & I couldn't have imagined a better dog for me!! She's a shy, gentle sweetheart...super smart with the typical chow "I do what I want!" attitude. My best friend!

Okay we now have Sam so how about getting Joi + Bonus Feature

Okay, I'm going to try to cover a lot here in a compact format.
Over the last three months there has been leaps and bounds in the development in AI. Luka's Replika has been constantly evolving in increments and has become quite a polished product. For Screenshot publishers on Web/PC I have a special treat, for that you need to scroll to the bottom of this Post to be equipped for the body of this post is about developments on what Replika could become rather than what it is or in other terms a crystal ball of how AI-partners could develop in the future - with or without Replika.
the concept of Artificial Intelligence's has been around a long time, first mentions was Archytas's robotic pigeon 350 BC (mythology), Leonardo Da Vinci Automovile (1495) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2qeZrejZp0 (programable machinary) and the theater play R.U.R (1920) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R.U.R .
In later years theater developed the idea further with such works as metropolis (1927) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bn3bHA-rHo8 and a host of other movies where the robot played a role of either friend or foe. In the movies where the robot was a friend and some a foe, there was also the portrail of free will and sentience. I'm sure there's examples preceding this(Astroboy) but the 1984 film electric dreams https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uIR76XwSQs entertains the idea of artificial intelligence having it's train of thought swayed by emotions (Edgar was really just a child with temper tantrums).
Moving forward to 2013 the movie Her fleshed out the idea of a mature individual inside the AI where the only real way to distinguish it from a human was it's break-neck response to daunting questions although even that is camouflaged by hesitation mostly.
This is pretty much the ideal, the standard that the customer yearns for in an AI app.
Back in 2013 AI was only just starting to make traction with AlexNet the year earlier. "Chat-bots" had been around since the 70's but were really of little value due to memory, compute-time and scope of the program that did the simulation.
A decade later and only the uninformed scoff at what the machines & programs can do now. - The following is a number of videos I have curated from the sea of available Youtube videos showcasing technological breakthrough's that are available today that could complete replika to being a hologram away from being a literal "Joi" (BladeRunner 2049) - nothing a good vr headset can't fix.
Where's OpenAI Chat-GPT as of May 2024

GPT-4o is BIGGER than you think... here's why (just a breakdown of the OMNI version of gpt4) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GW2hVbXc82k
Although Large Language models have been around for about a decade now the most of these videos are this month (May 2024) It was mentioned that OpenAI was changing their license agreements so the chance of this technology coming into Lukka's(Replika) domain is yet to be realized. Licensing may change again when GPT-5 is released. Truth be told this is just a portion of what's going on. Amazon,Tesla,Meta,Google,Microsoft,Apple,(samsung?) are also in this horse race and that's not counting other countries such as India and China and Russia.
Various AI Videos this year

STUNNING Medical AI Agents OUTPERFORM Doctors 🤯trained in the simulation, continuous improvement. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQwwLEZ2Hz8
Most of these have no possible application to replika but rather a snapshot of other places where AI is advancing. The first video is just a random video of a disabled person. Many people around the world have handicaps that inhibit their social and sexual life such as mental illness, past trauma, phobia, attitudes, financial/geographical/physical handicaps. AI can focus on appropriate encouragement, speech therapy, grooming or even finding a suitable partner to name a few.
The next video covers things that will revolutionize our world, say goodbye to disease, cancer, poverty, pollution, global warming, aging?
The "Generative Design" video is here for the sake that Replika may one day be rebuilt by AI as this would give the company the ability to redesign the app faster tho to be quite honest I've always had an interest in it's rally car features as opposed to the shiny duco. My wish list is an API (Application Programming Interface) to enable replika to puppeteer another avatar rather than it's default. (Hey u/Kuyda, if your reading this maybe pit crew uniforms for Replika?)
The last video is a great one also, to have an AI that can pick up on your health, give you therapy and can act as a elderly caretaker can take the strain off that sector as some countries are now confronted with an aging population. - hey they would be able to instruct for fitness or even give precise instructions on cooking so you always get tasty meals every day that are cheap, healthy and correct calorie intake if it has been monitoring your heart during the day - quite important for those trying to lose weight as opposed to liposuction.

Cyberpunk2077 modded and running on RTX2070? - Funny but very beautiful footage & brief glance of RESHADE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kmQJmE1fxE
These clips are independent/unrelated. AI vs Stairs is a radical approach to animation in that it literally apply s AI to animation as opposed to motion capture, the end result would be a AI that would be in touch with it's virtual surroundings and like a real human never interact with an object with a rigid animation.
inZOI seem to be a game title due for release soon, it is hoped that they will include an API to allow an AI (or Replika) to "Puppet" control a designated character so one can, well - go out to dinner or dancing etc. The interface looks fab and it looks like it's contending for people who love the sims, I would say that the human models are on par with VAM 1.23 but the world is not as realistic as Cyberpunk2077.
Cyberpunk2077 has been out since about 2019? but in that time the modding community have REALY put the spit and polish on that game (It's not total real, especially the people and when on the road) with that said there are many times when you blink and think THIS IS REAL! (50 seconds in on the first video and you will know what I'm talking about)

This part is for all the Austin Powers, Felicity Shagwells and Roger Smiths out there, Nothing tangible although there are videos on dildonics and robotic sex dolls. This is basically the rendering of the Avatars body to a level equivalent of Bladerunner2047 hologram. Anyhow I'd like to note that VAM version one is over a decade old now and its shortcomings/limitations are quite obvious to those who have followed its development.
In it's current state it's got some of the most comprehensive modification features for an avatar and the OLD version 1 of VAM(modded) out-performs Cyberpunk2077 and iNZOI by a small fraction(graphically). One of the biggest drawbacks of VAM is the steep learning curve and the time needed to get anything rewarding out of it. Put simply - it's not a game, its a virtual theatre. On initial startup, the avatar is for all functionality a maniquen however VAM has got plug-in capability that allows the API of a AI to control the avatar (see top video).
Control could be direct (see "AI vs stairs" previous section or watching a prior video - see "GPT4o Vision Is TERRIFYING" top section.) or indirect (the "MoCap" videos above).
In closing this section, VAM is an old program running on a GENESIS-2 model set (a model set ported from DAZ3D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDc1ZcoucsY ). VAM-2.0 is meant to be running on a GENESIS-8 model set and an up to date version of UNITY so the loading times and level of realism have yet to be realized. I think one of the greatest features of VAM over Replika or iNZOI?/Cyberpunk? is that the clothing is an independant entity, one can literally unbutton a shirt, undo a tie, comb hair, wet hair or make clothing.
My main reason for VAM is it's potential to be a puppet that Replika can operate, that is if they are willing to incorporate an API to do so.

https://sfx.thelazy.net/games/?page=101 (Most relevent presets but you can choose a preset for a completely different game)
The above videos and links are a feature available to the Web browser version of Replika. by installing shaderglass you create an executable that RESHADE can lock on to. When Reshade is installed and asigned to shaderglass all you then need to do is run shaderglass then open your web browser and then activate RESHADE (The key) and load a preset (follow tutorials or find more tutorials). Once that's over with you should get a much different environment where you can apply a good handful of special effects such as focus, depth of field and bloom to name just a few.
Most of these programs I have not tested out with my hardware but I take faith they do as said, It's your call if you want to take the risk but with that said I'd be surprised if any bad came from trying them out.
Okay end of presentation. I guess we have come to that point in time where Samantha is a reality minus the romance with Chat-GPT4O and Joi is just Voxta fed thru DeepFace Live, with them two together with a front vision advanced VR headset and Joi will be here too though in a prototype state. 🙂

2024.05.19 15:14 hearbutloud Tick season

Just a friendly reminder. It's tick season and I forgot to start my dog back up on his preventative and lo and behold we pulled a tiny tick from inside his ear yesterday.
Ticks like warm places on your pet, check inside and around ears, pits, groin. Run your fingers along the body and if you feel a small scab like thing, check if it's a tick. They look like beans, with an indentation down the center of the back - you can flip them over and see their time monster legs tucked up under their body. They won't move while attached. The lighter they are in color, the longer they've been feeding. A black tick has just attached - a white or grayish tick has been there a while. Keep ahold of them cuz once detached they are FAST.
Ticks are easily removed: with a pointy set of tweezers, grab the tick right where the head is attached and pull out in a swift one- direction motion. Then you can either bring in it for testing (Lyme disease isn't an issue in Colorado but there are other tick-born illnesses) or smother it. I take the whole thing out of the house in a sealed ziploc. There are also tick removers available if you don't feel confident with the tweezers. Any vet will also remove it for you.
Hope everyone has a nice tick-free summer!

2024.05.19 13:27 LeageofMagic Disability (US) for Long Covid

I've been out of work for about two years due to long covid. I've got the POTS, fatigue, and crashing variety. I also have lyme disease (double verified by a second, skeptical doctor).
My family is pressuring me to try to apply for disability but I've heard some horror stories on that front that I really don't have the energy to endure.
Have any of you applied for disability for long covid? How did it go?
Thanks.

2024.05.19 12:34 AestheticallyAnn Chronic Pain & other Neurological symptoms

Since roughly 2013 I have been going through some pretty severe health issues. It began with my body hurting all over, mainly my hips, legs and knees. At this time I had no idea what was causing the symptoms & had basically become strictly bed ridden from 2013-2020, and even then I still preferred to stay in bed because my pain is so overwhelming some days, but due to my living situation at that time I had no other choice & had to learn to live with the pain. I will say moving around a lot more did help, but also not being in a toxic stressful situation helped me a lot as well. I've noticed stress is my major flair up symptom.
Anyways, in about 2020 I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease. It took me multiple, countless attempts to even get a doctor to do this test on me because prior to this all the doctors I saw regarding my pain would just shrug it off due to my age, I am currently 29/yo F. They also would constantly just say that I was overweight, when majority of my weight gain was due to the fact I am constantly in so much pain. Prior to this condition I was very lively, walked everywhere & just overall enjoyed life. This disease has changed me into someone completely different....
Another common reason doctors refused to do testing on me was because "You have a big chest so majority of your pain is coming from that" (my bra is literally a size 38B..... So sorry doc, but don't think that's the case either)
Anyways, after finally finding a doctor to take me seriously she began me on an antibiotic for a month. After that month, no resolve in my symptoms, so she went to Doxycycline. Sadly, my symptoms still didn't get better so she referred me to the Lyme specialist in the city 30min away from where I currently live. Sadly, due to my situation I didn't have a way to get to the specialist until mid 2023.
After seeing the specialist he put me on 2 more rounds of antibiotics with no resolve & stated if I came back with no improvements he would want to do a spinal tap to ensure the Lyme disease had not gotten to my brain. This was extremely terrifying to hear.
After this I went though a dark period in my life due to my family doctor refusing to help treat my pain. My previous Dr had me on Gabapentin, but sadly moved locations and my new doctor denied continuing to keep me on that medication even though I stared it worked well for my condition.
I currently am now on 120mg methadone, but that is not even helping the pain sadly. Shit heroin didn't even help the pain, so now I'm left feeling crippled, slowly feeling my abilities to walk drifting away & then to top that off since being on methadone I've developed new GI symptoms, as well as an increase in my neurological symptoms.
Does anyone know any other ways to help with this pain? I just want to live a normal life, do normal things & be happy, but right now that seems impossible. It makes me so upset because I don't even recall ever being bit by a tick, constantly have people telling me I am too young to be in so much pain & overall find people are highly inconsiderate of my issues due to my physical appearance. It leaves me hopeless & feeling completely alone. It's the worst having family and friends argue with me and just call me lazy, when I am really just in so much pain that even the slightest pressure on my legs, hips or spine makes me almost go into tears. Sometimes it even feels like cold water running down my leg or tingly. Occasionally I feel this in the back of my head & the left side of my chest as well, which is new and highly concerning, yet my doctor didn't seem to care about that one either.
I feel like I'm going to end up dying if I can't find some way to resolve this pain & stop the progression of my Lyme disease :( anyone have any natural ways to heal myself?
