You know that a lot of people shitting over mainstream pop and i get their concerns and worries. But why don't you try to put yourself in the mindset that every music have different purposes and target audiences also stand in different kind of society we're living in? Like yeah you guys might don't like some simplistic, repetitive, formulaic songs from Ed Sheeran or Charlie Puth (personally i'm not even a fan of Ed Sheeran and try to stay away from it since his songs are overplayed too much in my friend circle, like few songs from Charlie though) or derivative songs that recycle the sounds from 80s (The Weeknd, Tyler The Creator, Harry Styles, Calvin Harris), or a dance-focused songs that simply to have fun with (K-Pop songs especially Blackpink, Mumble Rap, Lady Gaga or JLO stuff) or something more focused on generic themes like loving yourself even if it is conceptual (BTS) but that doesn't mean they are bad. Those songs are simply to serve a purpose to entertain, socialize, having fun with their life to ease the pain, escape from reality, and make people dance since you can't be able to dance to some experimental songs that always have unpredictable song structures, rhythm, melodies, timbre, and chord progressions. Unfamiliarity when you are partying and dancing is simply an unpleasant experience for them as they want nothing more than living in hedonistic and simple life.
Fine you don't like hedonism and you might be a kind of introverted, introspective guy who's smoking in your room with vinyl and drink a Martini while listening to Pink Floyd "Dark Side of The Moon" or "Echoes" or a serious musician who's analytical and deeply philosophical with your life and love to experiment with microtonal Ben Johnston kind of music, but there are some people who are extroverted party animals who love to enjoy simple things in life without taking their life too seriously, or a rural people who wants nothing more than minimalistic simple life while drinking coffee and eating potatoes. And those differences shape their outlook of music (This might come of stereotype but my point is to presenting the differences instead of generalizing different kinds of people that listen to music).
It might be more better to treat "entertainment accessible-focused" (low brow) music and "artistic-focused" (high-brow) music or middle-brow differently in different kind of vibes and moods you are in. If you're feeling high energetic and extra and want nothing more than that, you might love low brow music that is focused on dance until you break your bones, but if you want something more than that in experimental way but still in same area, you might like someone like Depeche Mode or Aphex Twin, and those things are in the middle-brow. If you're feeling deeply serious and introspective about your life and want something to relate to to fill up your existential emptiness or critical about society that you're living with, you might love high-brow ones and someone like King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder might suit you. Or if you want to fill up your intellectual curiosity and stimulations since you have high IQ, maybe Jazz and Classical music is for you. I think this is the wisest way to listen to music if you simply treat them differently with different motifs.
People are just different, and that's beautiful. I just realized this after i've been edgy and snobbish about my music taste until i ground and humble myself with mainstream again after 3 years of exile and i regret that i've been bullying my sister for liking K-Pop for like 8 years or berating my family from their back because they love local folk dance music like Indonesian Dangdut or Pop Minang (still not my cup of tea though). I might be far from being mature but i'm on my way to it and i hope i can do something right with this.
I'm sorry for the long vent, just telling my thoughts about music scene after watching old people hating modern music because of the reasons in paragraphs above and it quite saddens me that some gen Z that are just want to have fun with their life get berated by them. After all i'm just average music enjoyer who enjoy music with different range and try to educate myself with some music theories and deepen my experience, and my musical journey at every genres is still far from done, hopefully never will.
