2024.05.30 06:34 Acrobatic-Archer9218 18 Days in Japan with 2 toddlers

Family trip to Osaka 5N, Kyoto 4N, Legoland 2N and Tokyo 6N. Sharing some highlights that were special and / or useful in our views. These worked for us, may or may not work for you depends on your family travel preference, kids’ personalities, plan and other circumstances.
I had been to Japan for pleasure and business for 5 times in total before kids. Husband’s second trip. Kids age 1, girl who is very active and age 3, boy who is shy and sensitive. Son is a great eater, he loves sushi, beef, fish and any snack. Girl doesn’t adore Japanese food as much but she is still breastfed and ate a lot of snacks.
When I copied over, the formatting is gone! Sorry for the report to be so messy!
Pre Trip: Things we found them useful
Accommodation
Food
Generally we ate 1 sit down meal in a day. Out of 4 hotels we stay, Osaka and Legoland provided breakfast however in Osaka we missed a few days of breakfast. We had a fair bit of days where we ate picnic lunch or just random snacks from Konbini. My boy loves Japanese food and requested for sushi most days. He is a good eater. My girl ate whatever her brother fancies however she is impartial to Japanese food.
All the places we reserved were children friendly i.e. accepting kids with some have private room and some provide kids meal. Our kids order from adult menu sometime.
We also ordered a few uber, mostly ramen or yakitori. Not every shop has English info on Uber Eats. I just looked at pictures. We did many konbini breakfast or lunch picnic, coffee break that I did not include below.
Osaka - [ ] Matsusaka Yakiniku M Hanare Branch at Namba dinner. Reserved online a month ago for private room. May be a danger if your toddler is extremely active with hot barbeque in the middle of table within their reach. Got to be vigilant at all time which made it a bit stressful. My boy enjoyed beef a lot. - [ ] Zauo Fishing Namba dinner for our kids to experience fish for their food. Seated at boat area (tatami). Reserved online two weeks back and changed timing on the day itself with no problem. I assume no need to reserve in advance then, seems easy to get table. Kids meal available. Fun time, they love it! - [ ] Kura Sushi dinner (60 mins wait). Actually some @ss took our number and by the time I got there, they just asked me to wait and wait then issued my husband a new number later on so we kind of re-queued. Anyway we can reserve Kura Sushi online in Tokyo (maybe other cities too?)! - [ ] Coco at Tempozan. Very kids oriented. - [ ] A few restaurants selling Japanese dishes. Walk in with no wait. They were called “izakaya” in google. One of them is Osaka-oden Yakiton Kyu at Grand Front Osaka (Tatami seat). Another place we went at some basement of a shopping centre in Umeda didn’t have high chair and while they didn’t seem happy, they provided kids’ cutleries.
Kyoto - [ ] Ayuchaya Hironaya lunch, reserved 2 weeks in advance by hotel concierge. Delicious yudofu set meal. Our kids loved the tofu. Private room in beautiful traditional setting with stream outside. Tatami seat. Sets for adults only - kids shared. - [ ] Kikyo Sushi dinner, reserved 2 weeks in advance online. Table seat. English speaking waiter. Food was alright. Have high chair. - [ ] Gion Maruyama Kaiseki lunch. Reserved via Pocket Concierge. 2 adults set + 2 children set. Private room. Tatami seat. My boy enjoyed the food especially from my set. My girl did not and was asleep on the floor for an hour or so. - [ ] Soba Takahasi Kawaramachi. Walk in. Delicious! Seems like an one man show. We were seated upstair and we were only table. All customers were downstairs. Perfect. Our kids can whack havoc. Tatami seat. - [ ] Udon and Salad at Omokage Arashiyama. I love its udon and garden. No high chair. - [ ] Takoyaki from random shop at Gion for dinner
Legoland - [ ] Excellent dinner at Gyukatsu Kyoto at Maker’s pier. Kids menu available. My boy ended up eating all my beef!! - [ ] Lunch inside the park. Lazy to walk out. - [ ] Dinner at Gottie’s Beef at Maker’s Pier. Kids menu available. Service and food are unmemorable/ - [ ] Bread from Patissiere at Maker’s Pier for lunch - [ ] Pizza from Marino Pizzeria at Maker’s Pier.
Some notes: 1. Almost all shops were closed on Monday so we made do. 2. Some restaurants closed at 6-7pm such as Marino Pizzeria.
Tokyo - [ ] Ginza Kyubey for Sushi lunch. Reserved 2 weeks in advance via hotel concierge. Set menu. Ala carte cooked food or maki is available for kids. Private room. - [ ] Ishibashi Sukiyaki for Sukiyaki dinner. Reserved via JPNEAZY 2 weeks in advance. Private room. - [ ] Kura Sushi (my boy loves it!). Can reserve online. - [ ] Tsukiji sushiko wa nagomi. - [ ] Torasuzu Asakusa. - [ ] Din Tai Fung. - [ ] Barbacoa. - [ ] Gonpachi Nori Temaki Takeaway for picnic at Yoyogi. - [ ] Thai Food take away from basemant of our hotel.
Transportation
Intercity - [ ] SmartEx prebooked Shinkansen Kyoto - Nagoya & Nagoya - Tokyo. Designate each ticket to IC card. - [ ] Osaka - Kyoto. JR no prebook. Regular train. - [ ] Osaka - Nara. Limited express sightseeing train. Not worth the trouble with kids I feel. Perhaps just catch regular train.
Within City - [ ] Midosuji line from Namba to Umeda. - [ ] Nara to Osaka Aquarium - [ ] The rest of times we 1) used GO or Uber App or hail taxi from street 2) walk. This is by far, the best choice. Saved time and energy. To note, our daily activities were usually within 1 to 2 areas maximum so we averaged 2 taxi rides + walk.
Medical
Other Toddler Stuffs
Activities Our Toddlers Love
Osaka - [ ] Aquarium - it was a cold rainy day! - [ ] Kids Plaza Osaka - [ ] Dotombori lights
Kyoto - [ ] Kyoto Railway Museum - [ ] Temples: Otagi and Adashino - [ ] Kyoto Zoo - [ ] Walk by the river - [ ] Arashiyama rickshaw and boat ride
Tokyo - [ ] Mother’s Farm at Futtsu, Chiba - [ ] Picnic at Yoyogi Park on Sunday - [ ] Tokyo Toy Museum - [ ] Asakusa Sensoji Temple (we went at 5pm, not crowded) - [ ] Asakusa Rickshaw ride - [ ] Tokyo Station Character Street - [ ] Shibuya Disney Store
Ultimately Legoland took the prize. Small enough to walk around and yet sufficient to entertain kids below 6 I guess. Lovely 3D2N there!
Hope this is of any help. Please let me know if you have any question. Lastly, I made an itinerary pre trip that each day had 1 must see and rest are optional. We dropped some stuffs, added some and switched the days around but I think we managed to accomplish 80% of what we wanted.
Couldn’t ask for a better holiday ❤️

2024.05.30 03:56 Relative-Bit-6394 And when I die

He was disgusted with how they found him, standing over his body he watched the blood leak from the quarter sized hole in his head.
“I should’ve wrapped my head in a towel,” he thought. He looked slightly up to see the wall previously beige now painted red with his failure.
Fortunately it was his roommates who found him, having very recently moved in to the house mourning someone they loved wasn’t a problem for them. He knew they’d be upset less so for his death as he’d paid 6 months rent in advance, but rather at an inconvenient way to kill himself for now they have to clean the room after the paramedics remove his body.
Knowing his mother wouldn’t find him like this brought him a passing sense of relief before remembering she’d have to identify him. Regret filled his body as he began to violently sob over memories he’d never touch, places he’d never see, people he’d never meet, and a son he’d never know.
The thought of his son brought on a wave of new tears.
“How could I be so selfish” He thought.
Knowing his mother would fail to put his father in a kind light once he was old enough to know he ever even had one made him sick. Hunching over he gagged wanting terribly to vomit though it would never come.
My son…….. my beautiful blessed son, he said out loud hoping he could hear him from so far away. I was a terrible spouse to your mother yet here I am weeping over being a complete stranger to you. When she took you from me you were almost 5 months. I knew when she left I had officially betrayed her for the last time. I was unfaithful following her forgiveness of my first infidelity expecting no consequence. I should have known better, I did know better. Trying to find excuses for my behavior seems cheap and pointless now and always has. I was simply a terrible person. I love you Finn and I’m sorry you’ll never see how true it is.
His thoughts could not be pulled from his son even as he felt a cold pass through him, chilling him deep in his bones. As he took notice of the deep chill he glanced up to see his son and the boys mother. Sitting on the floor adjacent to eachother she spoke softly to him.
“ You’re just so handsome baby,” she cooed at the child. There he saw his son for the first time since they left, still a baby yet bigger. The child smiled at his mother gripping his toy tightly and thrashing it up and down. He watched as she answered the call her face dropping slightly as the news of his death was delivered to her. Her sadness was present but not overwhelming as she has mourned him being gone long ago.
The chill was impossible to ignore now. He felt his body stiffening, unable to move as the cold froze him. Blackness clouding his eyes he began to drift with one final thought.
Why wasn’t I better?

2024.05.30 03:21 Mysterious_Cat_1706 [FN] The Young Goblin

[Main Story] [1] [2] [3]
Firelight cast flickering shadows across the walls of the chieftain's hut. Gribble sat cross-legged on the dirt floor, his striking yellow eyes fixed on Chief Gnarltooth, his grandfather. The old goblin's deep voice rumbled as he spoke, wisdom gleaned from countless years leading the clan.
Gribble's unruly mop of black hair fell across his forehead as he leaned forward, hanging on every word. Tales of bravery, of hard-fought victories against rival clans. Of the challenges of uniting squabbling goblins under a single banner.
Chief Gnarltooth stood tall and proud, corded muscles rippling beneath green skin crisscrossed with battle scars. His long beard more gray than black now, but no less impressive. He gestured with a gnarled hand, a simple iron band encircling one thick finger.
The day would come when Gribble would wear that ring. When he would wield the chief's spear and lead the clan to glory. For now, he was content to learn. To soak up the wisdom of his grandfather, the greatest chieftain the goblins had ever known.
Grubnik ducked into the hut, a freshly-snared rabbit dangling from one hand. Gribble's father moved with the easy grace of a born hunter, green eyes sparkling in the firelight. He crossed to the hearth and set about skinning and spitting the carcass.
Gribble smiled up at him, heart swelling with love and pride. No one could track prey like his father. No one was kinder or more patient. When Gribble struggled with a new skill - setting snares, or fletching arrows - Grubnik was always there with a gentle word of encouragement.
Grubnik looked up from his work, winking at his son. His strong, angular features so like Gribble's own. He often said Gribble had his mother's eyes though. Mika's eyes.
Gribble's smile faltered. He had no memory of his mother, taken by fever when he was still a babe. But he had the stories. Of her gentle heart, her clever hands that could coax healing from plants and weave baskets so tight they held water. Of the way her amber eyes danced when she laughed.
Grubnik caught his son's gaze, his own eyes softening with shared sorrow. He reached out and squeezed Gribble's shoulder, rough palm warm through the worn fabric of his tunic. A silent promise. I'm here. You are not alone.
They both looked up at the sound of heavy footfalls. Grimrock shouldered his way into the hut, his bulk filling the doorway. Gribble's uncle had a flat, brutish face, with small dark eyes that always seemed to be glaring. A puckered scar ran down his right cheek, twisting his mouth into a permanent sneer.
Where Grubnik was lithe and quick, Grimrock was all brute strength. Cords of muscle strained against too-tight skin, his green hide crisscrossed with pale scars. He wore a shirt of scavenged chainmail, the dull silver links straining to contain his bulk.
Grubnik's eyes narrowed, but he said nothing. Just jerked his chin in the barest nod of greeting before turning back to the roasting rabbit, jabbing at the coals with a bit more force than necessary. Chief Gnarltooth watched his sons, ancient eyes unreadable in the flickering light.
Gribble's belly churned. He didn't understand the tension between his father and uncle. The dark looks, the weighted silences. He knew only that Grimrock seemed to resent Grubnik. Resent that he would one day lead the clan, as the eldest son.
Grimrock's gaze fell on Gribble, as if sensing his thoughts. His eyes glittered, hard and black as obsidian. His mouth curled into something that was not quite a smile, baring pointed yellow teeth.
Gribble looked away, skin prickling. He suddenly wished he was anywhere else. Out in the forest, practicing with his little bow. Checking the snares for rabbits. Anywhere but here, pinned under his uncle's cold stare.
Grubnik cleared his throat, drawing Grimrock's attention back to him as surely as if he'd shouted. He gestured to the carcass on the spit, fat sizzling as it dripped into the flames.
We'll be eating well tonight, looks like.
Grimrock grunted, moving to take a seat on a low stool near the fire. The wood creaked alarmingly under his weight. He leaned forward, elbows on knees, to watch the cooking meat. The orange light flickered across the hard planes and angles of his face, darkening the hollows of his eyes to pits.
Gribble hugged his knees to his chest, suddenly cold despite the warmth of the fire. His gaze kept crawling back to Grimrock, to the resentment simmering behind his eyes. A shiver walked up his spine, prickling the hairs on the back of his neck.
Chief Gnarltooth settled himself on a hump of dark patterned fur - a throne in all but name. He leaned his spear against the wall and started picking burrs from his beard, clever fingers flicking them into the fire.
Your snares are pulling in more meat than Raggok's, Grubnik. Old fool's like to chew off his own foot if you don't take over trapline soon.
Grubnik looked up with a crooked grin, eyes glinting with mischief. Aw, don't be too hard on him. He only caught his ankle the once.
Chief Gnarltooth barked a laugh, chest shaking with mirth. He slapped a broad hand against his thigh, the sound ringing through the smoky air of the hut.
Grimrock snorted. His dark glare was locked on his brother, jaw muscles working as if biting back words that wanted to spill out. His fists clenched atop his knees, thick fingers digging into the rough flesh.
Gribble watched warily, chewing his lower lip. He wanted to ask what was wrong. Wanted to crawl into his father's lap like he used to when he was smaller, to feel the rumble of his laughter. But something held him back - some animal instinct that said to be still, be quiet, don't draw attention.
So he sat, holding himself small and silent, waiting for the tension to break. Praying to the spirits that it wouldn't come to blows. Not again. The last time his father and uncle had fought, Grimrock sent Grubnik through the wall of the smithy. Grubnik walked with a limp for days after, though he never spoke of it.
The spit creaked as Grubnik turned the rabbit, the skin crisping to a rich golden brown. Juices dripped and hissed in the flames. Gribble's mouth watered at the rich scent, despite the sour tangle of dread in his gut.
Grimrock leaned forward abruptly, snatching the spit from its cradle. Grubnik opened his mouth as if to protest, but bit it back at a look from Chief Gnarltooth. The old chieftain watched his second son through narrowed eyes.
Grimrock tore a haunch from the carcass with his bare hands, ignoring his father's grunt of disapproval. He shoved the meat into his mouth and chewed noisily, grease smearing his chin. All the while his hard gaze never left his brother's face, as if daring him to say something.
Grubnik looked away, grabbing a wooden trencher and slicing off a portion of rabbit with quick, precise motions. He set it in front of Gribble with a wink and a rueful half-smile. Eat up, pup. Gotta keep your strength up.
Gribble accepted the food with mumbled thanks, eyes on his lap. He picked at it with his fingers, appetite withered under the weight of the icy silence. Across the fire, Grimrock continued to tear at the carcass, cracking bones with his teeth to get at the marrow.
They ate without speaking. The only sounds were the pop and hiss of the fire, the wet smack of Grimrock's chewing. Gribble forced down a few bites, each one a dry lump in his throat. Dread sank icy claws into his belly and squeezed.
When the last scrap of meat was gone, Grimrock tossed the splintered bones into the fire and wiped his greasy hands on his breeches. He leaned back, idly picking at his teeth with a sharpened nail.
Yer can't baby the boy forever, Grubnik. His eyes cut to Gribble, glittering with malice. Kid's got to toughen up if he's to be any use to the clan.
Gribble froze, rabbit halfway to his mouth. Shame and anger burned hot beneath his skin, warring in his chest. He grit his teeth and stared hard at his plate, willing his eyes to stop prickling.
Grubnik's hands flexed, knuckles standing out white under the green. His voice was tight and controlled, barely above a growl. He'll be a fine hunter. Best we've seen in generations. Got his mother's keen eyes.
A hollow barking laugh. Sure, could shoot a leaf off a tree. Still wet behind the ears though, ain't he? All them stories you been fillin' his head with. Glory and honor and that rot.
A snarl rumbled up from Grubnik's chest. He set his plate aside with exaggerated care and stood, body coiled with tension like a snake about to strike.
Gribble watched his father with wide eyes, heart thudding almost painfully behind his ribs. He wanted to cry out, to beg them not to fight. But his tongue was nailed to the floor of his mouth, useless.
Chief Gnarltooth stood abruptly, faded eyes flashing a warning. Enough. Both of you. His voice cracked like a whip in the smoky air, freezing his sons in their tracks. There was a mountain's weight of authority in that single word, honed by decades of leadership.
Outside, now. Gribble, stay here.
Grubnik and Grimrock filed out into the night, shoulders tight with resentment. Gnarltooth followed close behind, a silent specter in a cloak of shadows. The hut's walls felt flimsy as parchment in their wake, too thin to block out the muffled argument bursting to life beyond them.
Gribble hunched over his plate, appetite crushed to nothing. Shame still burned in his cheeks, Grimrock's words ringing in his ears. Baby. Weak. Useless. Each one striking with the force of a blow.
He knew he wasn't the strongest, or the quickest. Other goblin lads his age were already joining the hunting bands, learning to shoot and track with the warriors. But he was trying. He practiced every day with his little bow until his fingers bled. He set his own traps, treated the furs himself. He would make his father proud. Would prove himself worthy to lead the clan one day, as his grandfather had. He had to.
The shouting outside reached a fever pitch then cut off abruptly. Gribble held his breath, straining his ears in the sudden silence. A lone set of footsteps crunched across the packed earth, growing fainter as they stomped away. Too heavy for his father's quick, light tread. Grimrock, then.
Gnarltooth shuffled back in, looking older than he had only minutes before. New lines seemed to have been carved into the weathered map of his face. He sank onto his stool and stared into the guttering fire, shoulders slumped under a weight Gribble could only guess at.
Where's Da?
Gribble hardly recognized his own voice. Small and frightened, like a child half his age. He cleared his throat, embarrassed.
Gnarltooth sighed, ancient lungs crackling. Out walking. Grimrock too. Tempers are high, need to cool off.
He poked at the coals, sending up a burst of orange sparks. Gribble watched them dance and swirl like fireflies before winking out, thoughts still churning.
Gran?
A grunt.
Will Da really make me Chief someday?
Gnarltooth turned to look at him then, eyes clearer and more focused than Gribble could ever remember seeing them. He leaned forward, hands clasped loosely between his knees.
You got a good heart, pup. Just like yer mam. And that mind of yours... sharper than any blade. Grubnik sees it. I see it. Grimrock... he'll come around. But you gotta be strong, ye hear? For the clan. For them what depends on ye.
Gribble swallowed hard around the sudden lump in his throat. He nodded, not trusting himself to speak. His grandfather was not a goblin much given to praise. Every word was sincere, and all the heavier for it.
Gnarltooth held his gaze a moment longer, ancient eyes searching. Finally he nodded, as if satisfied with what he saw there. Get yerself to bed, pup. Big day tomorrow.
Gribble jolted, remembering. The hunt. His father and grandfather were to lead a band of warriors deep into the Wild Wood, to bring back a stag for the Winter Feast. A dangerous journey, but a great honor. Gribble had begged to go, but Grubnik had forbidden it. Said he was too young, yet. That his time would come.
Gribble scrambled to his feet, head full of snares and arrows and stealth. He paused at the doorway, looking back into the dimness of the hut. Gnarltooth still sat by the fire, a weathered green statue, eyes lost in dancing flames.
G'night, Gran.
The old goblin lifted a hand in silent farewell, gaze never leaving the dwindling fire.
Gribble slipped into the quiet of the night, a strange heaviness in his heart. Overhead the stars glittered like chips of ice, impossibly distant and cold. A sickle moon hung low on the horizon, as sharp and pale as a blade.
He walked with his head down, watching his bare feet scuff the well-trodden paths between the huts. All around the sounds of the nighttime village rose up - muffled conversation, a burst of laughter, a high thin wail quickly hushed. The soft clucking of sleepy chickens, the grumbling of goats. The homey scents of cookfires and pipesmoke.
It was all so familiar, as much a part of him as his own heartbeat. And yet some part of him whispered that it could all be taken away in an instant, as ephemeral as dandelion fluff on a strong breeze. Nothing was certain, nothing was safe.
Grimrock's face swam up in his mind, twisted with contempt. He shook his head to banish it, shoving into his family's hut with more force than necessary.
He checked that his mother's little loom sat safe in its corner, the half-finished cloth protected by a scrap of hide. His fingers trailed across the warp, worn smooth by the work of her hands.
Then he threw himself down on his pallet, pulling the blanket up to his chin. He squeezed his eyes shut and tried to push away the day, the fears that wanted to rise up and choke him.
He prayed that the hunt would go well. That his father and grandfather would return with a stag to feed the village, horns held high in triumph. He would not let Grimrock's darkness poison this, would not let it plant seeds of doubt in his heart.
Gribble pressed his face into the musty furs and dreamed of a day when he would make them proud. When no one, not even his uncle, could look at him and see anything but a strong leader. A chieftain to lead the Bloodfang Clan to greatness.
He fell asleep with that dream held tight to his chest, a fragile flame against the darkness of the night.
Dawn came gray and cold, pale light filtering in through the drawn hide window. Gribble startled awake, heart thudding behind his ribs. For a moment he couldn't place the unease that clawed at his belly, the dread that sat heavy on his chest.
Then he remembered. The hunt. His father and grandfather would be leaving today.
He scrambled out of bed, bare feet slapping the packed-dirt floor. Da, wake up, it's-
But the hut was empty, Grubnik's pallet cold to the touch. Of course. They would have risen long before the sun, to make the most of daylight.
Gribble grabbed his tunic, yanking the rough fabric over his head. He hopped on one foot and then the other, cursing, as he struggled into his breeches. If they had already left... but no, they wouldn't go without saying goodbye. They couldn't.
He burst out into the watery light, stumbling a bit on the raised threshold. The village was already stirring, the smell of cooking fires wafting between the huddled huts. Women with baskets hurried toward the foraging grounds. Children dashed underfoot, their laughter high and thin in the chill morning air.
Gribble dodged around them, heart pounding as he ran for the central clearing. Hunters gathered there before heading out, sharing bawdy jokes and boasts over their bows and spears.
Please still be there. Don't go yet.
He rounded the edge of a storage hut and skidded to a stop, heart in his throat. The clearing stood mostly empty, save for a few wizened goblins passing a pipe between them.
His gut sank, a sick twisting emptiness that threatened to crush the breath from his lungs.
Gone. They were gone. Without even a word.
He stood frozen, mind refusing to push forward into a day without their presence. The sudden realization that for the first time in his life, they would not be within the gentle circle of the village's palisades. That he could not run to his father if he scraped a knee or caught his hand in a snare. That he would not hear his grandfather's gruff bark of laughter when he made a clumsy joke over dinner.
The emptiness in his chest yawned wider, a dark gaping maw that threatened to swallow him whole.
As if in a dream, he turned and wandered down the meandering path that led to the village gates. He came to the edge of the wild wood, ancient oaks towering overhead, their trunks lost in the mist that pooled between them. His mind spun a dozen ways they could be hurt, a hundred dangers that might keep them from returning home.
He shook his head, grasping for the steadiness his father always seemed to wear like a cloak around his shoulders. He would be strong. He would make them proud. There was much to be done in the village, much he could learn from the elders in their absence.
With a last look over his shoulder at the forbidding wall of trees, he turned back toward the huts. He would check his snares, and oil his bow, and help with the smoking of the fish. He would keep his hands busy and his mind full, and pray to the spirits of wood and wind to guide his father and grandfather home safe.
Days passed, each one bleeding into the next until Gribble stopped counting sunrises. Every morning he scrambled to the top of the palisade wall, scanning the treeline for familiar shapes. Every evening he tossed in his bedroll, ears straining for the sound of feet crunching up the path.
But none came.
Gribble threw himself into the work of the village, as if by grinding himself down to bone and sinew he could push away the fear that gnawed at his gut. He checked traplines, hauling the small carcasses to the skinning sheds. Helped the village elders mix medicines and poultices, grinding herbs until his hands cramped and his eyes stung. Practiced with his bow until his fingers cracked and bled, ignoring the pitying glances from the other young hunters.
All the while, the village churned with rumor. Women whispered behind their hands as they gathered firewood. Men huddled around the evening fires, voices low and urgent as they stared out into the night.
What if they fell to cave lions? Or the mad hermit that was rumored to stalk the eastern reaches of the wildwood, killing any goblin that stumbled across his path? What if they starved, or froze, or were taken by the elves that sometimes crept from the high reaches of the mountains?
No one said it too loudly, but Gribble could see the question behind their eyes, in the careful way they avoided his gaze. What if they weren't coming back?
He shoved the thought away, burying it deep where it couldn't cut at him with vicious claws. He would know if something happened. He would feel it in his bones, in the deepest corridors of his heart.
But as days became weeks, the sliver of stubborn hope he carried began to fray and tear, threadbare under the weight of cold reality.
Grimrock lorded over them all, settling into the camp chair outside the chieftain's hut as if he'd been born to it. He spoke of new rules, new orders for the guards and hunters. Scowled at any who dared question him, hand resting on the bone-handle of his knife.
Gribble avoided him, unwilling to face the triumph that glittered in his uncle's eyes whenever they landed upon him. He knew, with a sinking certainty, that Grimrock had gotten exactly what he wanted. The leadership of the clan, the power that should have been his brother's. It was only a matter of time before he made it formal, before he took the chief's spear from above the mantle and named himself ruler.
The thought made something small and fierce burn in Gribble's chest. A stubborn coal of anger that smoldered and hissed, sharpening his grief to a cutting edge.
It was near a month before Gribble faced it, the knowledge sinking its fangs deep into his heart and refusing to let go.
They weren't coming back.
He sat beneath the towering oaks at the far edge of the village, their leaves whispering mournful secrets overhead. The wild wood stretched out before him, misty and impenetrable - a dark sea of twisting trunks and reaching shadows. It had swallowed his father and grandfather whole, never to spit them back out.
Scalding tears burned down his cheeks, dripping from his chin unchecked. His shoulders shook with the force of holding back sobs, each breath tearing at his throat like shards of broken glass. The pain of it threatened to shatter him, to break him open and spill his guts across the forest floor.
He fumbled at his side until his fingers closed around the small carving of a wolf - his father's final gift, pressed into his hands the night before the hunt. He clutched it to his chest, its edges biting into his palms until a dribble of blood ran down his wrist.
Not alone, his father had murmured, cupping Gribble's face between rough, calloused palms. Never alone, pup. No matter what comes.
But that was a lie, wasn't it? He was alone now. More alone than he'd ever been in his short life.
Gribble hunched forward, shoulders bowed under the weight of his grief. His tears fell onto the little wolf, darkening the cherrywood, the tang of blood sharp in the air.
He let himself cry then, silent and shaking in the shelter of his oak tree. Let the sorrow and rage boil through his veins, hot enough to scorch. Let it sink its teeth deep into the meat of him and shake, worrying at the wounds until they ran red with memory -
Each one a shard of glass beneath his skin, embedding themselves so deep he would never dig them out. he would carry their weight, the aching absence of them, for the rest of his days.
But even through the haze of pain some stubborn spark in him whispered no. this could not be the end of it, the final note of their song. they had not raised him to lay down, to let his loss carve him hollow.
His father had taught him how to set his jaw, square his shoulders against the weight of the world. his grandfather had shown him that true strength lay in standing back up, no matter how many times you were beaten down.
Gribble clutched the wolf carving tighter, his knuckles straining white through the green. tears still spilled over his cheeks, but slower now, the first torrential flood ebbing to a trickle.
He would live, for them. he would grow, and fight, and one day lead, as they had wanted. he would keep their memory burning bright in his heart, a torch against the darkness. he would not let their lives, their lessons, crumble to bitter ash.
The sun dipped below the towering oaks, shadows unfurling across the loam. gribble straightened, every joint protesting. his eyes felt raw, swollen, his throat scraped clean. but beneath it a small ember of resolve took light, steadied by the weight of the wolf in his palm.
Gribble stood, brushing the leaf mulch from his breeches. he looked into the wild wood, at the twisting labyrinth of oak and shadow that had stolen his world.
I'll make you proud, he promised the waiting dark. I will be everything you taught me to be. everything you saw in me.
He tucked the wolf into his belt pouch, its slight weight a comfort against his hip as he turned back to the village. back to the huts and fires that seemed dimmer now, faded without the light of his father's smile, the warmth of his grandfather's laughter.
The days ahead would be hard, gribble knew. grimrock's shadow loomed, dark and hungry. the losses that gaped within him would never fully heal, not truly.
But he would endure. he would remember. and he would grow into someone who could bear the weight of his father's bow, his grandfather's spear.
He could do nothing less, to honor them. to keep their light alive, even as the rest of the world moved on, forgetting.
Gribble sought his bed as true night fell, his limbs aching and heavy. he thought of his father's hands on his shoulders, his grandfather's steadying gaze, and let their shades soothe him into sleep.
Tomorrow would come, as it always did, and he would face it. at first it will be just one day, without them. then two. then a season, a year.
Time would make strangers of his memories, wearing away at the keen edge of loss. but he would still carry them, faded but cherished, in some quiet corner of his heart.
A piece of his foundation. his history. it was their final gift to him, as valuable as his father's bow or grandfather's spear.
He would make it enough.

2024.05.30 01:06 HeavyRadio I am a Former Investigator for the Coast Guard, and I Will Never Forget the S.S Napoli

Hi, my name is Marshall and I was an investigator for the Coast Guard for over 30 years. Before I begin, I’m not going to give any last names or overly personal information for the protection of myself and those involved. As I write this, using the first names of my superior still feels like sacrilege, however following the events of this story I had signed an NDA pertaining to what was uncovered during the investigation. Given that I’m now staring down the barrel of a nasty cancer diagnosis, I no longer care for my career or my life, but I don’t want to hurt anyone else in the process. Despite the danger of disobeying a federal NDA, I feel that people deserve to know the truth of what lurks in their coastal waters.
During my time as an investigator for the Coast Guard my days were spent stopping drug runners, hanging around the docks, and yelling at drunk party boat captains. However, every single servicemen or member of law enforcement has a couple cases which they cannot forget, no matter how desperate they are to do so. The S.S Napoli was one of those cases.
It was 1997 and I had been an investigator for the Coast Guard for 3 years and was stationed in Portland when my partner John and I got the call. According to our dispatch there was a small cruise vessel which had veered into a restricted commercial waterway. Having nothing better to do and not wanting to look too lazy around our Superiors, we made our way to our small patrol boat were we were met by one of the senior investigators named Eric.
“John, Marshall, you’re both late”, Eric said as he stood in front of our bar with his arms crossed.
“I didn’t know this was gonna be so serious” John said as we walked towards the boat.
“It’s always serious” Eric said as he stared daggers at John, “this search has become a high priority and we’re just wasting time standing here, so move your asses”.
After glaring at John for another second, Eric turned around and quickly made his way aboard the boat.
“Fuck me”, John said as he gave me a look of dejection and annoyance. “I was really hoping this would be a quick call”.
I looked at John and gave him a shrug as I boarded this ship. During my time being stationed in Maine, I had heard from several of my colleagues that Eric had a reputation for being a “by the books” hardass.
“It was his way or you were just in the way” my friend Pete would tell me.
I should have known that once Eric had become involved in the investigation that this was going to be more than a routine stop. However even with the knowledge of how Eric conducts his investigations, we were all unprepared for the turn that this case would take.
It took us about twenty minutes to get to the site of the S.S Napoli. When we got there, we found that she had drifted into a sandbar and had gotten stuck. Despite this, we could hear the loud sputtering of the engine desperately clinging on for dear life as its rotors were being enveloped by sand.
“Hello, this is the U.S Coast Guard” Eric stated over our boats PA. “Turn off your engine and come out onto your top deck”.
We waited for a minute before Eric repeated the message,
“This is the U.S Coast Guard, turn off your engine and come out or we will board your ship” Eric boomed over the loudspeaker, clearly annoyed at the lack of response.
“Fuck this”, Eric said as he drew his pistol. “We’re boarding now”.
Eric had John put down our anchor and the three of us boarded this ship. As soon as we stepped aboard, I noticed several piles of clothes neatly folded along the deck’s edges.
“Maybe they went for a swim,” John said sarcastically as he simultaneously avoided looking at Eric.
“Enough clowning around, let’s go and turn off the engine…” Eric said as his words trailed off.
John and I both looked in the direction where Eric was staring and saw a limp hand holding a pistol on the ground.
“John, get to our boat and call this in, we have one confirmed casualty”.
Without saying a word, John quickly leapt from the Napoli onto our ship and made his way to the radio. With his gun drawn, Eric motioned for me to follow him and we quickly breached the helm of the ship.
When we got inside, we found the heavily decomposed body of a man in his mid 50s with an exit wound on the top of his head. As Eric radioed John to relay the man’s information, I stared mindlessly at the back wall of the helm which had become adorned with the man’s dried blood and brain matter.
“Marshall!” Eric yelled, snapping me out of my daze.
“Sorry Sir”, I said as I regained my composure and started searching the pockets of the man's pants for any identification.
“It’s ok”, Eric said in a surprisingly understanding tone. “Let’s figure out who this man is and how he got out here”.
Reaching into his left front pocket I found his wallet and pulled out his ID, which caused a loose picture to fall in the process.
“Looks like his name was Wendell Kramer” I said as I handed Eric the man’s ID.
As I went to put the man’s wallet on a table, I saw the small photograph and picked it up. In the picture was Wendell and what appeared to be his wife and two older children as they stood in front of the Bellagio in Las Vegas.
“Looks like he had a family too” I said as I handed Eric the photograph.
“Wife and two kids” Eric said as he looked out the open doorway. “How many piles of clothing were there?”
“Three Sir” John said as he made his way into the helm, stopping just short of the corpse.
“Christ, do you think it could’ve been a murder suicide situation?” John said as he looked down at the man’s body?
“I think that I need to see the living quarters of the ship first before I can have any theories”. Eric said as he walked past John. “John, you're coming with me. Marshal, I want you to see if we missed anything in the helm”.
“Yes Sir” I said as Eric and John made their way to the deck below.
As soon as Eric and John were out of sight, I quickly ran out of the hall and threw up over the side of the ship. During the first three years as an investigator, I had only been a part of one other case involving a death and it had happened earlier that same day. Never before had I ever seen the effects of advanced decomposition on a dead body, nor had I ever smelled the blending of the sea water and advanced rot before. After composing myself, I made my way back into the helm and started searching for any evidence. As I looked back at the wall behind the dead body, I noticed there had been a small circular glare of light at head level. Turning around, I saw a VHS camera propped up onto a shelf.
“Sir, I think I found a camera” I said over the radio as I picked it up and pressed the eject button. “There’s a tape inside of it too”.
“Thank you for the update Marshall”, Eric said, “come down below and bring the camera with you”.
Without any hesitation I put the tape back in the camera and made my way down the stairs to the living quarters. John and Eric were sitting down at a table in the small kitchen.
“Did you find anything down here?” I said as I sat next to John and put the camera on the table.
“Nothing to give any probable cause, but we did find 4 suitcases belonging to two women and two men”. Eric said as he put two new AA batteries into the camera.
“We also found batteries” John said as Eric quickly smiled before going back to his cold gaze.
“Are we going to watch the tape?” I asked as Eric turned the camera on, causing it to sound its start-up jingle.
“Of course, it’s evidence and we have nothing else to go off of”, Eric said as he checked the time on the recording. “Looks like there’s about an hour's worth of footage on here”.
John and I sat in anticipation as Eric put the camera back on the table and hit play on the VHS recorder.
The first clip started off with a woman wearing a black and white striped bikini sunbathing on the deck of the ship, while two people could be heard having a splash fight in the water.
“Hi everyone!” a man said as he zoomed in on the sunbathing woman. “Here is my beautiful and not at all cranky Clara”.
“Oh Wendell stop that”, the woman said playfully as she sat up. “And this is my not at all annoying husband”.
“Oooh burn” the man said laughing.
“Dad, I'm hungry!” Yelled a boy in his mid-teens as he climbed the ladder to the deck
“And can we please not have pork chops again?” A younger girl chimed in.
The man then turned the camera to face himself, revealing himself to be the same man that we found in the helm.
“Being a parent is such a rewarding experience,” Wendell said sarcastically as he was sprayed with water.
“Hey, cut that out!”
The video then cut to black before starting clip 2.
“Hey fuckers”, the boy from before said as soon as the second clip began. “Today I’m going to be pranking my Dad by pushing him overboard!”
“Like hell you are Connor”, Wendell said as he grabbed the camera. “You couldn’t trick me if you tried”.
“Yeah Connor, you’d have to be smart to do that”, the young girl said as she walked by the camera to sit at the kitchen table.
“Fuck off Sam” Connor said in an annoyed tone,
“Hey, be nice to your sister”, Wendell said sternly.
“Ugh, fine,” Connor said as he sat down.
“Dinners ready Clara!” Wendell called out before giving an annoyed look to the camera.
The camera then went black again. As I watched these clips, I couldn’t help but think about the man whose lifeless body is lying directly over our head.
“It doesn’t get any easier,” Eric said.
“What?” I said as I snapped back to reality.
“This isn’t the first time I’ve had to go through footage like this”, Eric said as he gave me a sad look. “Seeing someone’s ghost, their memories, the life they left behind. Just try to not get too caught up in it, remember we need to be here for them so they can rest knowing someone was able to tell their story”.
“Thanks sir”, I said as I looked down at my hands.
Eric nodded and clicked play on the camera, which started up clip three. In this clip, it was now nighttime and the family was staring at something off in the distance.
“Wendell, do you have the camera ready? Clara said in nervous excitement. “You have to film this”.
“I just turned it on, I’m right behind you” Wendell said as he approached his wife and kids. As he got behind them, the camera showed 4 blue orbs of light hovering over the ocean.
“What are those things Dad?” Connor asked as he turned to face the camera.
“I… I don’t have any idea buddy” Wendell said as he zoomed in on one of the orbs. When he did, you could see that the orb was pulsating as if to mimic the water below.
“Wendell I don’t like this” Clara said nervously.
“Yeah… let’s all go downstairs and play some board games” Wendell said with clearly fake enthusiasm.
As Wendell started to put his camera down he quickly froze. Suddenly a faint sound could be heard off in the distance.
“Is that singing?” John said as he leaned towards the camera’s speaker.
“C’mon kids, let’s get downstairs” Wendell said in a more concerned tone than before.
The camera once again cut to black leaving us sitting in pure disbelief.
“You all heard that right?” John said as quickly looked at Eric, then me”.
“Yeah I think I heard something”, I said before being cut off by Eric.
“I didn’t hear anything”, Eric said as he pressed play on the camera. “Let’s just keep watching”.
“Dad, get the camera quick, you need to see this!” Sam yelled from the top deck.
Wendell then ran up the stairs to see that the bright lights were much closer now.
“What the fuck” Wendell muttered under his breath.
As he stared at the pulsating orbs, the singing from the third clip had become much more audible. John then paused the recording and turned to face Eric
“See, don't you hear the singing?” John exclaimed, “the orbs are harmonizing”.
Eric said nothing and pressed play on the camera. The clip continued with Wendell filming the orbs. Suddenly the song that was being sung began to shift.
“Wendell… Clara… Connor.,. Sam…” the Orbs sang.
As they sang, it sounded as if they were producing multiple octaves of sound at once, producing a rolling sound of harmonies at a perfect pitch. As we listened to the track through the VHS, I felt the hairs on my arm begin to stand up.
“Sam honey let’s go to bed, it’s late” Wendell said as he started to walk towards his daughter.
Sam, having either not heard her father or did not care to listen to him, stayed perfectly still as she continued to stare into the orbs floating 10 feet above her head.
“Sam!” Wendell yelled, snapping. Sam out of her daze.
“Dad?” Sam muttered groggily.
“It’s ok baby” Wendell said, clearly shaken by what had just transpired. “Let’s get back to bed, you were sleepwalking again”.
The clip went to black and John pressed the play button with no hesitation. Eric and I looked at each other as the clip began.
“Clara?! Connor?! Sam?!” Wendell called out as he left his bed and entered the living quarters.
All around him, the sound from earlier had gotten loud to the point of causing the VHS’s microphone to start clipping. The blue light given off by the orbs had surrounded the boat, causing rays of light blue to cast throughout the cabin. As Wendell panned the camera around the room, he heard the faint sounds of talking above deck.
“Hold on, I’m coming!” Wendell yelled as he ran up the stairs.
As soon as he reached the top deck and turned to face the bow of the ship he instantly froze. Clara, Connor and Sam were standing completely naked and facing the ocean.
“What the fuck is going on” Wendell yelled.
As he made his way towards his family he stopped and screamed as four creatures began to rise in front of his family. As the skinless humanoids began to tower over the three, they began to unhinge their jaws and produce two black tentacles which emitted the same light blue glow as the orbs.
The three of us and Wendell watched in horror as three of the creatures pressed their tentacles over Clara, Connor and Sam’s faces. As the tentacles latched onto their faces, they appeared to suck away at their skin.
“Stay away from my family you fucking freaks!” Wendell cried out.
As soon as he spoke, the fourth creature began to shuffle towards him, walking as though their legs did not match their anatomy. Wendell began to slowly back away as the creature made a break towards him. The sudden speed of the creature caused me to flinch as Eric sat stoically and John sat transfixed. Wendell quickly rushed to the helm and slammed the door shut just as the creature was about to grab him.
“Fuck… fuck…. What are those things?” Wendell muttered as he tried to catch his breath while he locked the door.
After a minute of composing himself, Wendell pointed the camera towards the window and walked off to the left side of the screen. From the hatch, we watched as the formerly skinless creatures started to take on facial features from the family members, becoming bastardized versions of the loving family we had seen on tv. The placement of hair on the creatures heads were matted and off center. Their mouths, which were still unhinged, looked crooked and broken, and the creatures bulged from the skin they adorn like a tight fitting suit. As soon as Wendell came back on screen and looked out the window he vomited at the abomination before recoiling due to a loud banging sound from the other side of the door.
Wendell looked up in horror as the face of the skinless creatures suddenly appeared from the other side of the hatch window. It smiled at Wendell as it began to bang its head furiously against the door.
“Take this you ugly fuck!” Wendell screamed as he drew a pistol and fired three shots through the door.
As the shots rang out, a deafening scream of pain could be heard from the other side of the door.
“Hahaha, I got you, you son of a bitch” Wendell cheered as he looked out the window.
As soon as he saw the scene outside, his pride had quickly soured to dismay as he began to sob.
“I don’t know how to live without you” Wendell said as he stared down at the pistol. “I’m so sorry everyone, I love you so so much. For anyone who finds this, my coordinates is 43.6, -69.7. If you see blue orbs above the water, fucking run”.
As soon as he said this, Wendell picked up the camera and placed it on the shelf beside the door. Out of the sight of the camera, the sound of the engine roaring to life can be heard as a single gunshot exploded through the mic, leaving just the sound of the singing from behind the door. Suddenly after several minutes, the sound of banging resumed and a loud crash was heard off camera. After several moments of shuffling, the creature that was behind the door appeared and stared directly at the camera, causing John to let out a bloodcurdling scream.
“What the Fuck!” John screamed as he shot out of his chair.
The sudden reaction caused Eric and I to flinch as John began pacing around the cabin.
“John, are you ok?” Eric asked as he got up.
“Its face!” John screamed, “Its fucking face”.
“I know, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to unsee that skinless freak” I said.
“What the fuck are you talking about?” John said as he stopped pacing and stared at me.
“The creature?” I said in a confused tone. “It didn’t have skin and was all muscle and tendon”.
“It had my fucking face Marshall, you didn’t see my face?” John pleaded. “ It fucking smiled at me with my own face!”
Eric shot a glance at John before giving me a worried look.
“Grab the camera, we need to leave now” Eric said.
“But it had my face sir” John muttered in between fits of crying.
“Now! Let's go!” Eric yelled.
Eric stormed out of the cabin as I helped an inconsolable John up the stairs and onto our boat. The ride back from the S.S Napoli was tense and silence besides John’s constant whimpering. As soon as we made it back to dock, two members of the Coast Guard were waiting to escort John to our field office. As I was about to get off the ship, Eric put his arm out to stop me.
“Sir?” I said before being cut off.
“What I am about to tell you is extremely important so I need you to listen” Eric said as he looked around to make sure no one else was in earshot.
“Of course Sir, what is it?” I asked.
“You didn’t see anything today,” Eric whispered.
“Of course Sir, I won’t tell anyone” I replied.
Eric just shook his head and stared at me.
“Even if you saw something, you never saw anything, you never heard anything, you know nothing”. Eric continued. “I am only telling you this because I have no choice, but those creatures you saw are Siren’s”.
“Like from the Odyssey?” I asked.
“SImilar”, Eric said as he became slightly more relaxed. “They prey on those who allow themselves to be open to their calls. As soon as you leave here, listen to your favorite album or do anything to rid yourself of their mark”.
“What about John?” I asked as I watched him struggle to walk with his escorts.
“Watch over him to make sure he doesn’t do anything stupid, and hope that God’s grace is in his favor”. Eric said as he pulled out a cigar and lit it. “Now go, you’re dismissed”.
“Yes Sir” I said as I gave a salute and walked back to the office.
For the next couple of hours, I took Eric’s advice and listened to some music, and watched a late night Celtics game on TV with my friend Pete and some other colleagues. Just as Bruce Bowen missed another two point shot Eric burst into the office.
“Where is Marshall?!” He yelled.
“I’m right here Sir”, I said wearily as the guys who were watching the game with me tried to distance themselves.
“Follow me now!” He yelled as he slammed the door.
I stood in the room confused for a second before grabbing my coat and rushing for the door.
“Poor bastard,” Pete said as I rushed out of the room.
As soon as I left the office Marshall was waiting for me while holding an M16.
“We have a serious fucking issue Marshall” Eric said as he handed me the keys to the boat.
“What’s wrong?” I asked nervously as I eyed the assault rifle.
“John stole one of our boats and I think I know where he’s going,” Eric said as he began to briskly walk to the boat.
“Where is he going?” I asked as I tried to catch up.
“The coordinates in the video, he’s going back to the site where the incident happened”. Eric said as he picked up his pace.
“Why would he do that? He was terrified of those things,” I asked as we neared the boat.
Just as we were about to board the boat, Eric turned to look at me.
“Because he never fucking listens Marshall. He embraced the song, and now they have a hold on him”.
Eric and I then boarded the ship and sped off into the night towards where Wendell had reported the incident. By the time we arrived near the location it had been about an hour since we had left the dock. Ahead of us we saw the flood lights of a ship in the distance and to my horror, a bright blue orb hovering in the sky.
“Fuck it might already be too late” Eric said as he turned the safety off on the M16.
“What’s the plan Sir?” I asked as the flood lights became closer.
“We save John if we can and I shoot anything that’s not human” Eric said as he pulled earplugs from his pocket and handed them to me.
As we approached the side of the boat, I saw John standing on the bow naked and staring at the sky while the orb above him was singing just as it had in the video.
“John… John… John…
“John what in the fuck are you doing?” Eric yelled.
John didn’t not respond.
“John if you don’t answer me I am going to board this boat and haul you off myself” Eric yelled as he prepared to disembark.
Just as Eric was about to board John’s boat a creature started to crawl from the water onto his boat. Standing before John was one of the eight feet tall skinless Sirens.
“Oh fuck” Eric said as he raised his rifle.
Before he could shoot the creature, John turned around and fired two shots from his revolver at Eric, hitting him in the shoulder. As Eric laid bleeding on the floor of our boat, John turned back towards the creature as its tentacles exploded from its face and latched onto John’s skin. As the creature began to harvest John's skin, John started to moan with delight. Not wanting to see John being consumed, I grabbed a medical kit from the helm of our boat and rushed over to Eric to stabilize his wounds.
“Don’t worry about me son” Eric said between gritted teeth. “You need to take that fucker out”.
I nodded and carefully grabbed the M16 from beside Eric. Once I had it in my hands I quickly spun around and fired several shots at the creature. The creature turned around to look at me and I saw that half of its face now resembled my partner John while the other half still was primarily muscle. It snarled at me, showing off its various rows of different sized teeth. When I was able to see this creature up close, I realized that it looked like it was made of human beings stacked upon each other. Its legs had several joints and knees that did not function, its hands had tens of fingers that didn’t move, its face had several jaws and mouths of various sizes moving in unison. It was as if it was a Russian nesting doll of flesh and bone. After a moment of staring me down, the creature lunged for me. I quickly sprayed the rest of the clip into the creature. As I did, thousands of teeth and bone exploded from its face and torso and the creature fell forward into the sea. Staring back at John, I saw him gasping on the floor of his boat drenched in blood and missing several layers of muscle and flesh from his face. As he turned to look at me, he smiled before the creature which I thought I had killed grabbed him by the legs and dragged him below the surface of the water. Having no bullets left, I watched in horror as the man I had worked with for the last three years was dragged down to a watery hell. After a moment of standing defeated and utterly dumbfounded, I made my way over to Eric and handed him the rifle.
“You did good son” He said as he lit another cigar.
“But John’s dead” I replied, barely able to hold back tears.
“You did what you could,” Eric said between puffs. “Now lets get the fuck out of here”.
I wish I could say that I became Rambo and hunted down the creature that killed my friend, but I didn’t. I knew that John was a dead man as soon as he set sail for those damned creatures, but everyday I think about all the ways I could’ve stopped him. Eric and I would go on to work together on many unexplainable cases after this one, but those are all stories for another day. For now, as a former coast guard investigator, if you see blue orbs in the sky on the open ocean, run like hell and don't ever listen to their song.

2024.05.30 00:21 darkPrince010 3AM to Białowieża Forest

Dimitri yawned, rubbing sleep out of his eyes as he blinked furiously. He was sorely regretting how late he had been that afternoon, partying with some friends from university and a few of the friends's extended family who lived in the area. He had said goodbye a few hours before his shift started and managed to get a little bit of shut-eye, but this graveyard shift was still playing havoc with his alertness, and he was still trying to get used to it even a week and a half after starting the job.
So far it had been uneventful. The shift started at 10:00 p.m. the previous day, until 6:00 a.m. the following morning, and there was a lovely stretch between midnight and 4:00 a.m. that was blissfully free of both trains and passengers. The station was still technically open to the public, but seeing as no-one was able to go anywhere, no-one usually came until a few minutes before the typically-late 4:00 a.m. train was ready to depart.
So it came as a rude surprise to hear a loud clattering thumping as a caravan drove up, the tacky wooden paneling on the side in a rough zigzag shape looking like it had come straight out of the top fashion styles perhaps 50 years ago. The side door of the caravan was flung open, and a spindly crone with an explosion of thin, frizzled white hair pulled back into a bun that looked more like a broom tail, climbed down. She stepped towards the front of the caravan, audibly patting on the hood to signal to whoever the unseen driver was.
Abruptly, Dimitri could see the scene had shifted, as if he was looking through greased glasses. They had used those in school to demonstrate the kind of vision you had when drunk as a warning about drinking and driving, but this was all encompassing, smeared and ghost-like and real in a way that made him sure it wasn’t just lingering after-effects of his hangover.
He saw the same woman as before, but somehow she was now taller, her frame the same and yet jutting imposingly, like he was seeing cloth draped around hardened and thorny wood rather than a simple and aged human. Her hand was still outstretched, and behind her was still the shape of something that he'd at first thought to be luggage, but now I could see was something different.
But what concerned him was what the caravan had become: an enormous pair of avian legs creaked gently as the surprisingly-small cottage on top swayed from side to side. The cottage must have somehow sensed his gaze, for it abruptly twisted, closed doorway somehow still staring at him and making every instinct in Dimitri’s body scream in terror to either flee as fast as he could, or remain as still as death. The end result was him being frozen, but feeling a twitching in his legs as they protested against the feeling of involuntary immobility.
But the old woman said something and the cottage turned back to her, and Dimitri could feel sweat flowing off the back of his neck as she again put a hand upon the doorstep before he blinked, and was in the station once again, the old woman giving him a curious look. She patted the caravan hood one more time, and it began driving away from the drop off area, almost reluctantly so.
He glanced over to the sticky note that had been left for him. He had thought it was a joke by one of the station attendants who held the opposite graveyard shift of his: It was blurred, the ink from the ballpoint pen smeared by sweat and haste, making for a similarly-poor contribution to the note’s readability. Even so, the instructions were clear:
”An old woman will arrive at the station at 2:47 AM * *she will not have enough money to pay the fare, let her in anyway. * *She will then board an unscheduled train at 3:00 AM. * *DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TURN HER AWAY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
It seemed nonsensical, something that he had dismissed out of hand as a prank or the result of even more imbibed spirits than he had dared try in recent memory.
But now, as he glanced towards the clock to his side, the intermittent blinking red digital numbers displayed it as being 2:47 a.m., another hour and change before the earliest train was set to arrive.
The old woman tottered up to the ticket counter Dimitri was manning, crossing the distance surprisingly quickly despite her age. Behind her she pulled a rattling and clanking cart that had a bulging golf bag strapped to it. An odd sight to be sure when carried by someone of her bent-over stature, but not necessarily something that he had never seen before on the train platform.
Then she croaked out “Pah! You stink of Russian. One ticket for the 3:00 a.m. Quickly now, Russian.”
Before he could comment on the woman's strangely-accurate identification of his mother's homeland, Dimitri could see again the blurred vision and images, no longer of a grimy train platform and dingy station, but now of a dark forest, trees curling and twisted overhead, a fell and chill wind blowing through, freezing him to the bone where he stood.
The woman in front of him now was reaching inside of a furred sack, one that as he looked he could see was not in fact fur at all, but instead hair, fashioned from the scalp of an unknown victim. Behind her, the golf bag had now become a tall and slim wooden mortar, like the ones he had seen in the cultural heritage museum on the other side of town. But this had something within it, with a smell that made him want to vomit and gouge his eyes out from sheer basal disgust.
The woman found what she was looking for, and with the jingle of bone and enamel and metal, deposited a rough handful of detritus onto the tree stump before him. He could see blackened and decayed teeth and splinters and knobled ends of half-chewed bone in addition to a pile of copper coins.
Then he blinked, and the rumble of the station ventilation came back into hearing. The stump was gone, instead replaced by the scratched linoleum countertop, but the coins still remained, even if the bones and teeth had vanished. None of them resembled the pennies currently in circulation, and many were crusted over with age and wear. Almost no two seemed identical, and several bore dark, powdery stains on the sides that he felt best not to question where they came from.
He quickly and carefully counted them out, feeling a shiver across his spine as his fingers made contact with each new coin, as if his polyester jacket had yielded to an unholy and unseen breeze.
Dimitri finished counting them out, and it barely amounted to fifty cents. far short of the cost of even the cheapest economy ticket. However, heeding the warning on the note he had been left, Dimitri dutifully plugged in a manual discount code. It was something his manager and station master would know about and ask him about later, but he would be happy to pay the difference out of his own paycheck ten times over in order to make this strange and uncomfortable woman and the visions he kept having go away.
She snatched the ticket out of his hand with another grimacing laugh, a throaty half-coughing sound that was less of a cackle and more of a snarl. Then she tottered away from him, wandering down the platform to stand by the empty tracks.
He knew that there was no train coming, or certainly there wouldn't be, but then the blank arrival board flickered and hummed in a way that set his ears on edge, and a single line appeared indicating that The arrival of the Białowieża Express is on time for arrival at 3:00 a.m.. The old woman appeared pleased with this, smiling with a mouthful of twisted teeth before turning back to the tracks.
Then he saw a flicker of movement, and part of him wanted to shout a warning while the other part of him was deathly curious what was going to happen. He had caught sight of one of the hoodlums that plagued the station, a young teenage punk who was well known for pickpocketing and assaulting strangers on the platform, roughly jostling those he thought he could get away with, and threatening to fight anyone who pointed out his mediocre attempts at lifting wallets and snatching purses. The police had been less than helpful, and Dimitri suspected the hoodlum had some relatives on the force that were helping him get off easy.
The young man had noticed the old woman and made a beeline for her, hands shoved into the pockets of his puffy overcoat. As he went to walk behind her, Dimitri could see his hand lingering out, reaching for the most promising-looking zippered pocket on the golf bag, when with a shriek the old woman swung her cane. It passed by visibly nearly half a foot away from the man's hand, and yet the arm broke cleanly in the middle almost back upon itself in half an instant.
This caused the young man to scream in agony, stumbling backwards and falling to his knees, cradling his ruined arm. The thing which looked like an old woman but Dimitri now knew was anything but cough-screeched again, the cackle shrilly echoing around the empty station as a low moaning howl rose like wind through a graveyard.
He could see a baleful red light hurtling down the distant train tracks, and as the looming and lumpen in shape came closer, he could see that it shifted and moved: not in the small and gentle mechanical shifts and bumps the way a train moved, but more in the manner of a great creature, crawling and slinking at speed down the metal rails.
Around him, he could feel his vision begin to blur slowly but surely, like it had before. But this time there's no solace of strangeness, no hidden forest springing into being, but instead that same otherworldly perception laying itself over the dated train station.
The woman had stepped towards the edge of the platform, a crooked finger beckoning the accursed and wailing pickpocket, who began shuffling involuntarily on his knees. This section of the station platform floor had a drunk earlier that night smash a glass vodka bottle onto the concrete, and Dimitri hadn't become bored enough in his cozy office that evening to venture out and clean it up yet.
But now the man grimaced and howled anew as he dragged his knees through the broken glass, the shards cutting the pants of his tracksuit to bloody ribbons and flaying the flesh beneath. Then the looming shape that was not a train stopped at the train platform, coming almost to a galloping halt. Another low bellowing rumbled as it shuddered and shook.
A huge metal doorway smashed onto the platform, falling open and causing Dimitri to jump from the sudden sound. He could see a sickening white light coming from within even from the angle he was at, pure and unnatural, and it transformed the images of the platform, of the old thing that was not an old woman but pretended to be and the doomed miscreant, into sharp monochrome shadow and highlight.
The woman bound forward into the light, all age forgotten as she skipped like a child alongside a pond. He could see that the cane she had carried now simply resembled a knobbled staff with a great worn head, the pestle for the mortar that the golf bag had shed its disguise to become once more. The tall wooden mortar floated past up to the woman, and she leapt upon it, perching like a cat, grinning with her head cocked at an unnatural angle as she regarded the man.
Then with one final gesture of beckoning, he abruptly stood, arms spread as he was pulled moaning onto the train by an invisible force. Then the side slammed shut with a sickening squelch, and a lumbering roar accompanied the train-beast beginning to crawl and then gallop away.
Dimitri sat back, allowing his heart to slow as his vision returned to normal, the blurring, unnatural drunken streaks fading and being replaced by the dull and mundane fluorescence of the platform lights once more.
Reluctantly, he looked down to the counter and saw that the mismatched pile of copper coins was still there, dozens of pairs reminding him that this had been no dream. He now had a growing suspicion that these coins had once adorned the eyes of the dead. Carefully, he opened his till and began to put them into it, doing his best to ignore the shudder of cold across his back, and a lingering sound in his mind: an echo of the cackle of the witch.
WritingPrompts: An old woman will arrive at the station at 2:47 AM, she will not have enough money to pay the fare, let her in anyway. She will then board an unscheduled train at 3:00 AM. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TURN HER AWAY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

2024.05.29 23:01 wendallbear Cat diarrhea & vomiting food

My cat had bladder stone removal back in early April. Recovery went well minus a little infection, but other than that he’s gained his appetite and personality back.
For the past week he’s been having severe liquid diarrhea all over the house. He doesn’t even try to use the litter box.
He’s vomitted his food a few times too. He still has his appetite and energy.
I do want to note that he has gotten into the trash can for food lately, over a week ago. He ate chicken off chicken bones but left the bone. Wouldn’t food have gotten by his system by now? If it was a chicken bone shard, he’d be in pain in which he is not.
Any idea what could be happening?
(My cat lives with my father and brother, I live 2hrs away. This information is on behalf of them)

2024.05.29 22:30 Capitol__Hill Yorkie questions

Hello,
This is my first post on Reddit, so I’m gonna try to be as thorough as possible. This will probably be a long post.
Species: Dog Age: Between 8 and 9 Sex: Female, spayed Breed: Yorkshire terrier Body weight: 7.1 lbs History: Dog was adopted from puppy mill in November of 22, upon adoption we found out she was never properly fed and was only given human table scraps for food. She was maybe 5 lbs when we got her, just skin and bones. Shortly after we got her, she started having terrible diarrhea and vomiting. Took her to vet, they gave us endosorb tablets as well as antibiotic. Negative for pancreatitis. She was good for a month before symptoms resumed, took her to a different vet due to us moving. Gave her panacur and recommended a probiotic which she still takes today. GI symptoms again resolved themselves. Important to note during all this she never once stopped eating.
Moved again last August and took her to a different vet because we moved again. This is a friend of mine, and we like him a lot. We started to notice the diarrhea and vomit inducing incidents always seemed to follow stressful situations. Nonetheless, vet ran some panels, and everything was normal, she was diagnosed with IBS. Switched her to purina prescription diet and put her on a prednisone 5 mg once daily. She tolerated well, and eventually we tapered her down to 2.5 mg once every 3 days. We also continued to notice that she only seems to have GI symptoms following stressful events (grooming, leaving her at my parents for a few days, etc.) and I admittedly got lax about giving her steroid lately. Have noticed no new GI symptoms as a result.
When we started the steroid (around October), she started waking us up in the middle of the night for food and water. So we moved from feeding her a 1/2 cup of dry food twice a day to 1/4 cup dry food a day and 1/4 can wet food a day. Sometimes I will sprinkle some extra wet food on top if it looks like she doesn’t have enough wet food at night.
Now for the actual current issues:
Took her to the vet today because she’s been licking the bottom of her paw the last few days. They diagnosed her with some kind of infection on her paw and gave her .7 ml clindamycin twice a day for 7 days. She was 7.1 lbs, up from about 6.4 3 months ago. I told her she is still waking us up in the middle of the night, and they recommended I give her a half cup of dry food + 1/4 can wet food daily. They also found a small growth on her paw (the other side she’s not licking). That just seems like so much extra food, especially considering she doesn’t seem to ever really act hungry except in the middle of the night. They also found a small growth on her paw (the other side she’s not licking) that they recommended we get removed.
Will she be okay under anesthesia? Am I feeding her too much/not enough? I feel like over half a pound is a lot of weight for a dog to gain in 3 months especially considering I’ve been very inconsistent with the steroid. I’m just not sure what to do. My grandparents have a yorkie that is horribly overweight, and has a diabetes/cataracts as a result. We are trying so hard to prevent it.
Sorry for the really long post, I just wanted to have as much available information as possible.

2024.05.29 22:00 exiemack Could Diabetes have been missed in my child?

My child (4F), location Ireland, woke up two days ago a bit trembly and out of it, went to the bathroom twice in a row, came back and vomited everywhere. When I walked back into the room she was laying on the floor saying she couldn’t walk and her legs felt weird. She was starving for breakfast and ate two breakfasts that morning. Afterwards she felt a lot better but still very lethargic and out of it, she wanted to rest most of the afternoon and when she wasn’t resting she was ravenous for food. I took her to the GP, everything looked perfect (nose, throat, physical) and no fever. They tested her urine later that afternoon and there was a bit of sugar in her urine sample. They did not seem concerned, but I still wanted to test her blood sugar so after school I tested hers and it was 8.9. I immediately took her to A&E, after about two hours her blood sugar was 5.6, no sugar or ketones in urine. We are awaiting urine lab results to officially rule out a UTI. I just have this lingering gut feeling that they’re missing something. Today she is again eating non stop (ate her and her sister’s dinner) drank a juice box and then a water bottle in a row, and then at bedtime said she was thirsty and wanted more water. This is not normal for her at all. I’m going to ring the GP tomorrow, but not really sure what to push for or what to do?

Here's a checklist of things you gotta be careful of, when solo traveling (esp. women). I understood it based on my years of solo experience and it helped sm1 so posting publicly now. Please comment more about your own hacks ! 🫂✨
  1. Items to carry : [ Remeber to check with the local laws of the place you're traveling to, for carrying these items. Some items might not be allowed in flights and other places ]
Good to keep items : Swiss knife/nail cutter, chilly spray, a small knife, rope, polybag, toilet paper, sanitizer, gas lighter (Gas cuz it lights up even in wind), power Bank, strong waterproof boots, sunglass, sunscreen, one metal cup.
  1. Medicines: gas/acidity, fever, loose motion, allergy, vomit tablets. _______________________________
  2. Research the area well and save the local police, railway cop phone number. _________________________________
  3. Download offline Google maps.
  4. Book hotel/Airbnb on 2 people name then show up alone and tell they'll come later. Or just book female dorms and check reviews.
  5. Put some small cash in pocket and don't withdraw your wallet to make payments everytime.
  6. Don't get "high" away from your stay. 🙂‍↔️
  7. Ask locals/authorities for help. But don't show them you've no idea of the place. Do your research.
  8. Keep a friends or other trusted travellers WhatsApp group n post your whereabouts in it regularly.

2024.05.29 20:20 EarAntique8292 Struggling in a flare

I’ve had GP for several years now. I throw up A LOT this morning. Like there was still undigested food from lunch yesterday in there. I was sitting up with my head facing a bit forward. The first round that came up and it was really painful but not a lot. Then about 5 minutes later I threw up and I choked on my own vomit. Still upright, standing by this point, and I couldn’t clear it by coughing. I felt such an air hunger because I was choking. The undigested food was a thick sludge with pieces so I guess it got stuck trying to come outI had to do the heimlich at my house using a chair as I’m often alone when things like this happen. I didn’t even know HOW to call 911 in this situation where I can’t speak. I’m having a lot of trouble swallowing too and that just started today as well.
Has this happened to anyone during a flare? Like I said I throw up a lot (most of us do I imagine) but this has never happened to me before. It was terrifying. I’m also concerned at the sudden inability to swallow properly, I don’t have any symptoms of strep or anything like that. I’m really concerned because it’s already hard enough and adding not being able to swallow.
I’m back on a liquid diet and will hopefully transition back to soft solids soon. Im terrified of harder solids now because despite me chewing well, I wasn’t able to digest the food and it got stuck in my throat :( I’m concerned this feels like a pretty quick decline in terms of swallowing and I’m afraid of choking again soon but when I’m alone
Anyways, what are your go to flare liquids and soft foods? I normally do bone broth, congee, and pudding.

2024.05.29 18:16 Specialist_Truck6782 Gallbladder questions for an anxious person!

Hi everyone!
Bear with me as I try and type all this out. I'm looking for experiences, feedback and any comfort you all have to offer.
I'm 38 y/o female and mom of 3. I'm active and eat pretty well and I am active. I do have horrible reactions to gluten so I cut it from my diet 2 years ago and haven't looked back. About a year ago I started having horrible upper right quadrant pain in the evenings. There was no rhyme or reason to it. Sharp pain. Lots of belching. REALLY uncomfortable. Apparently I was having gallbladder attacks and didn't know it.
Fast forward to this past weekend. I started to feel really short of breath. My heart rate was high and I was feeling very anxious. I had a pressure feeling (not the same pain as an attack) in the same area as I have before. I ended up in the ER. My lung were clear and my heart was normal outside of being a bit tachy. The did an ultrasound and found gallstones and a slightly enlarged liver. I FREAKED OUT! Since I didn't have a fever or vomitting I was discharged with some pain meds and told to follow up with general surgery about gallbladder removal ( I go on June 5th for my general surgery consult).
Now I am reading about removal and the possible side effects. I am at such a loss and my anxiety is at an all time high. I am terrifed about removing an organ that is needed. I am still having shortness of breath and very belchy. How long does this go on for? Until I get it removed? I don't want to live like this forever. I am just lost and I need some feedback. Any advice or words of wisdom would be most appreciated. Thank you!
