Leave it to the emperor to come up with something like this, Adzorg said, almost with admiration. The perfect counter for a mage. With such a high body trait and invulnerability to magic, there wouldn’t be anyone capable of stopping it.

The actions were fast and precise, not to mention covering a vast range. It was purely thanks to the large number of instances that Dallion managed to retreat into the sky unharmed.

Suddenly, the distance between the two disappeared.

I have recently gotten into making knives and have just begun using wood for handles ( I used resin based scales for all my previous ones) and have a question on waterproofing the handle. I pretty much know what I'm going to use to waterproof the handle (linseed oil) but I'd like to know if y'all have had any issues with the linseed oil reacting with the epoxy putty in any way since I'd be sealing the handle after I put it on the knife. The second question I have is would the linseed oil cause any issues with an inlay I'm planning to put in the handle? It's going to be a piece of gemstone composite from jantz (also sealed in place with jb weld epoxy resin)

I keep hearing people taut just how powerful the avatar state is because it seemingly allows Aang to compress water, something we were often taught to be “incompressible”.
Water is called incompressible because in most daily circumstances water is extremely difficult to compress (compared to other fluids) so we just call it incompressible for convenience. (It’s a typical oversimplifying that schools tell to children).
The bulk modulus of water is 2.15 109 Pa (The higher this number the less compressible a material is). Bulk modulus describes how much pressure is needed to cause the object to compress by a certain volume. (Waters compressibility changes with temperature, but should still be in that close ballpark)

So no, it does not break physics to compress water. It just takes an immense amount of energy to do so.
Water is considered incompressible because in its liquid form it’s harder to compress than most other known liquids and gases. Solids are a different picture. Steel for example has a bulk modulus of 163 109 Pa and thus steel is 80 TIMES harder to compress than water
Depending on the composition of the boulder he compressed in that same scene, it was likely a vastly larger achievement of physics than his compression of water.

Notice how at room temperature granite has a bulk modulus of around 10x10-9 Pa, so granite rock would be about 5 times harder to compress than water. You’d have to heat granite to higher than 800 degrees to get its compressibility down to a similar level as water.
Edit: I know a lot of people already know this, but if so this post isn't for you. As much as it might be hard to believe for some, there really are a lot of people in this community who truly believe Aang compressing water broke physics and thus was his single most powerful feat.
I'm not saying the water compression wasn't impressive. It definitely was a mindblowingly powerful action that far surpasses anything we see in nature. However, him compressing the boulder took about 5x EVEN MORE power to achieve. If we are going to gush about his water compression feat, we should also gush about the boulder compression even more.

Decades ago, my neighbor let demolition crews dump stone debris on his farm. A lot of these were demolished buildings from surrounding towns, and on a walk through his old hedgerows, I found some beautiful pieces of granite. Is there a way to tell from the composition where the original granite was quarried, or are they too similar to tie to a specific region?

There are Earth artists whose Paths are focused on drawing the power of the earth for battle, some are focused on art like delicate carving and sculpture, yet others on tilling the land for agriculture, and for shaping the very land around them to create structures like buildings and bridges and tunnels...
And this, the rarest type of Earth artist - the rock gardener. Like a Life artist may grow sacred fruit and herbs for Refiners, there are Earth artists that take care of and harvest metal ores & precious gemstones, they also help in agriculture by working with the fertility of the earth.
The greatest of these Artists work with materials like Goldsteel, Halfsilver and perhaps even materials like Wintersteel, but more often than not, they'd simply take care of veins and deposits of more mundane materials like iron, copper, zinc, tin, silver, gold, platinum, rubies, amethyst, jade, emeralds, sapphires, diamonds.
Using Ruler techniques to sense and manipulate the depths of the earth to find resources, guide them up, ensure proper enrichment of the soil by manipulating the flow of Earth aura, encourage the formation of more crystals or collection of more minerals by altering conditions of underground environments to make certain areas more suited towards them, even using the aura to conjure stones - possibly even useful or precious ones.
Techniques
One with the Earth: spiritual Enforcer technique that helps attune them to the currents of Earth aura beneath their feet, by using the Earth madra in their spirit to resonate with Earth aura. It is a vital skill for their work and the backbone of their Path. Makes it much easier on their spirit to enact their will upon the aura and manipulate it on a massive scale with the help of other Ruler techniques, for eg to shift mineral veins, ores, crystal formations, or Ley Lines. Working in conjunction with their Cycling technique, their Ruler techniques have a potency and scale far outstripping other Earth artists - though in return, they would have them beat in speed. Theirs is a patient work, not suited for the chaos of the battlefield (though large-scale organised warfare would be a separate matter). One can see Gold ranked artists on this Path shifting the earth at the base of mountains to dig out massive deposits of metal, normally a scale on which only Lords can operate.
Carved Words: Their Ruler technique to carve Scripts on the surface of rocks or even inside them. Requires diligent practice to learn to form the shapes correctly, especially without being able to directly look at the writing surface. Utilising Scripts helps them automate some of their work that does not need direct attention or requires extreme mechanical precision. It also helps them by not needing them to expend madra for every task, as Scripts work with Vital Aura. It also gives them a good bit of versatility in their Path, depending on how much they focus on Scripting. Even if they don't, using Scripts for some of their tasks means there's more room in their spiritual core for more Bindings for their Path. Due to their history, they've developed a lot of Scripts to help them in their job, such as for maintaining and regulating heat and pressure underground, detecting and responding to the presence of any Hunger corrupted worms that might damage their goods, detecting and keeping away burrowing Sacred Beasts or Remnants moving underground, keeping track of the shifting Ley Lines / currents of Earth aura along with its metal and crystal subaspects, as well as other aspects seeping underground. The necessity, knowledge and skill involved, and the amount of work performed by the radar feature is often underestimated by non Earth artists, who can't see the unfathomably deep, dense and dark ocean of Earth aura beneath their feet.
Pulse of the Earth-Veins: their Ruler technique for interacting with Ley Lines, the aura of the earth, without moving the raw physical material of the earth. It's easy to create techniques that interact with the physical; more difficult to create those that interact with the spiritual / madra; and it is even more difficult to work with techniques that interact with the raw energy system of the world delicately, without enacting any severe changes upon the physical material corresponding to it. Shifting the lines along which the energy of the world flows without creating devastating earthquakes, landslides or famines. Requires the help of One with the Earth technique, and a refined will. It can be used to encourage the formation and deposition of minerals, metals or crystals, or increase the productivity of the land.
Caretaker's Hands: their Ruler technique, designed to harmonize with not just the Vital Aura but with the will of others, to work in tandem. Working together using this technique, a team of Lowgolds could shift the layers of the earth to dig up tonnes of metal, without disturbing the surface too much. The technique can, depending on focus, work on large scale like that, but it can also be adapted to work on far smaller scales, to delicately work with granite or marble, steel or silver, or gemstones. Making them purer, interweaving their composition to give them more colour (this is what they're famous for), or to delicately cut, carve or engrave them.
Foundation of the World: full-body and anchoring type Enforcer technique, binds one to the earth while drawing upon its power. Greatly enhances the durability of the Sacred Artist, to allow them to turtle up. The technique is only functional while the artist's feet are in direct contact with the ground and is interrupted if they lift up a foot or are picked up, though that won't be easy with the anchoring type element of the technique.
Iron Body
Nimble Fingers Iron Body: an Iron Body normally attained by musicians who play the pipa, guqin or guzheng. Grants dexterity to the fingers, as well as auditory acuity, distinguishing every minutely plucked tone. It was also picked up by many thieves and assassins, the dexterity coming in handy for wielding instruments of battle just as well, and the well-honed auditory abilities helping them stay silent and pick out their targets. However, this Iron Body can be squeezed for a far more esoteric gift too: the ability to hear Vital Aura. The benefit offered from that? To begin with, most Veiling Techniques are created to deal with direct spiritual perception, which is usually processed by the brain as visual information. Veiling hides most of this output in general, but it is also usually a method designed by a visual person. Even a Veiled spirit has some quiet resonance with aura, so small that it is not detectable visually. But to someone who processes such information differently? With a little practice, it becomes easy to see through such techniques. Not just Veiling, it becomes possible to detect other techniques before they're even out of the opponent's spirit. In this case, it helps a Subtle Hues artist to not cut themselves while cutting gemstones or ores, and to detect the nature and quality of a stone by listening to the sounds it produces when struck with certain implements.
Jade Cycling Technique
Mountain Shouts, Valley Responds aka Echoing Valley Cycling Technique: Cycling according to this pattern makes one's madra more harmonious with its Vital Aura counterpart, increasing the power of aura resonance Ruler techniques.

Authors note: This one got a bit delayed, but as a bonus it is 10% longer than a normal chapter. Work has been very hectic and it was a bit hard to find enough clear time to write something. I write a lot of less interesting stuff at work, which makes it harder to write creatively sometimes. But here it is. Enjoy!

Chapter 9: Geir

Geir woke up with a start. He looked around confused and wondered where he was. Something buzzed next to him. He looked over at a small bedside table, where his comm was held in place with an elastic strap. Ah, yes. I am on a ship, The Verrier. The comm buzzed again and the screen lit up with a message to come to the pilot deck.
“What time is it,” he muttered to himself. He felt a bit groggy as if he hadn’t slept long. But a quick glance at the comm showed he had had two full deep sleep cycles. He should be ok with that. He washed himself quickly in cold water to wake up and put on a fresh set of clothes. Then he exited the small cabin to make his way up to the pilot deck. In the narrow corridor he nearly bumped into Liza who looked even more tired than he felt.
“Do you know what is going on?” he asked her.
“They found something,” she grunted. Clearly not in the mood for a conversation. She pushed herself towards the ladder for the canteen deck.
“I am making some coffee. I am bringing it up. Tell Kay I am coming, ok?” she said.
“Yep.”
Geir made his way up to the pilot deck, where he found Captain Kay, Diederik and Anna.
“There you are,” said Captain Kay. “Did you see Liza?”
“Yes she is coming. She is just fixing some coffee. She looked like she could need it.”
“Yes, she was up pretty late analysing the results.”
“So, found anything?”
“Yes we did.” She pointed to one of the bigger screens which held a somewhat grainy picture of something rectangular. The screen cycled through what must be images produced from different sensors, producing different false colours for each sensor suite. Along the edge of the picture was a scale, indicating that what they were looking at was about three meters across.
“What is that?”
“We don’t know,” said Anna. “We are going to find out though.”
“Find out what?” said Liza as she came up the ladder with a thermos in one hand.
“That was quick,” said Geir.
“There was some warm already. Couldn’t be bothered to make any new.”
“Really? Sacrilege!” said Geir, winking at her.
Liza just grunted and came over to the screens they were looking at. She stopped and looked at the cycling images.
“Is that what we saw earlier?”
“Yes,” said Captain Kay. “We ran a drone closer so we could get better pictures and resolution on the sensors. What do you see?”
Liza narrowed her eyes as she looked at the pictures. She was quiet for a minute as the others looked at her expectantly. She turned to them.
“You already have an idea I take it.”
Captain Kay, Anna and Diederik nodded in unison. Geir thought he would probably have found it amusing, if the atmosphere hadn’t been so tense.
“But you aren’t telling me. So, let’s see. About three meters across. A square. With some repeating patterns based on triangles on it. The material is some kind of mineral metal composite, as we discussed earlier. It probably isn’t the Chinese. Unless they brought a drone with an artistic bent with them.”
Liza sighed and made a face.
“I need some coffee first.”
As she poured herself a bubble. Anna looked at her console and said: “No change on the messaging from the Chinese. We are still invading sovereign territory according to them.”
Diederik snorted and looked at Captain Kay, who just lifted an eyebrow. Then she turned and looked expectantly at Liza, who had just drained a full bubble of coffee.
“Shit, I should have made some fresh.”
Liza turned back to the screens.
“It is an artefact. Isn’t it? Something that isn’t supposed to be there. The Chinese most likely didn’t put it there and we have observed the rock the whole time as it was coming in towards Jupiter and then out to here. Well, except for the time when it bouncing along the atmosphere. And nobody was going to plant something then. It could of course be something the Chinese did. But I can’t figure out what material it is. So we can’t rule the Chinese out. Occam’s razor and all that.”
“About where we arrived too,” said Anna.
“So we are going to go EVA and have a look then?”
“Yes,” said Captain Kay. “Geir, Anna and Frank.”
“Frank?” said Geir and looked surprised.
“Yes,” said Captain Key and nodded. “I am not letting Liza out just yet. I need two people to go. That means you Geir and Anna. And Anna isn’t leaving Frank here. So he goes too.”
Geir lifted up his hands as he started protesting.
“No Geir, that is how it is going to be. Let’s start planning the EVA and prepare the suits.”
Geir looked around to the others for support, but Diederik just looked at him. Anna shook her head slightly and Liza looked away seemingly focused on the screens.
“Fine! Whatever.” Geir turned around slightly too abruptly and had to catch a handhold to steady himself as he started drifting off. Over his shoulder he adressed Diederik: “Would you come and help me get the suits ready? It is a lot easier with four hands.”
Geir moved down the access ladder thinking. “How come Diederik is the guy I team up with now? I don’t even like him.”
In the brightly lit storage and changing area, Geir started readying three suits whilst giving Diederik instructions on what to do to help. Anna came in a few minutes later with Frank in tow and moved down into the cargo section to unpack a container. Geir looked at them as Frank climbed down the ladder and shook his head in frustration. He looked over at Diederik who just stared at him impassively for a few seconds and then started helping Geir step into bottom section of the suit. Anna and Frank came back up and started preparing a suit for Frank.
“Aren’t you coming as well?” Geir asked Anna.
“Yes, but I am using a different suit. It is downstairs.”
They continued in silence, Anna quickly and competently dressing Frank. Diederik taking a bit longer, with the help of Geir’s instructions. They were done nearly at the same time with Geir and Frank fully dressed in their EVA suits with just the helmets missing.
Anna looked at Diederik. “Could you please come help me downstairs?” She turned to the others. “You help each other down the ladder. Take it slow. While I get dressed as well,” she said in a friendly manner, but leaving no doubt who was in charge of this operation.
Geir got the helmets out of the storage and performed a safety check on both of them before handing one of them over to Frank. He helped Frank attach it to the suit where it was worn when not on the head. Then he let Frank go first down the ladder. It was hard to look down, as the EVA suit’s helmet ring restricted the movement of the head, so he had to feel his way with the feet to find the first rung of the ladder. Well down in the storage and airlock deck he saw that Anna had unpacked one of the military grey plastic crates. She was half dressed in the mech suit that the crate contained. A powered exoskeleton armoured suit. It looked like it had been refurbished, as several pieces of the suit were clearly new and others looked well worn, with scratches and faded colours. The suit smelled faintly of machine oil.
“Here,” said Anna to Diederik, as she pointed to her belt. “Attach the battery packs here. Once they are attached, double check that all five diodes show green for a full charge. Geir, could you open the lid of the other crate and lift out one of the rifles and give it to me. I can’t easily move, dressed halfway like this.”
“Rifle?” Geir said and looked at her. “We have rifles with us? Why would we need a rifle?”
“Do you know what is beyond that thing? It could be a hatch. After you give me a rifle, unpack a plasma torch to bring along. You know how to use them, right?”
“I know how to use one,” said Frank. “I have a certificate in both welding and breaching with one of them.”
“Ah, so you are useful after all?” said Anna with a snarky voice.
Frank abruptly went red in the face and looked down at this feet.
“Geir, find the plasma torch and give it to Frank, but keep the gas bottle separate. You carry it until we need it. I don’t want mister terrorist here to get any ideas.”
Frank’s face went even redder, and it spread to his neck which was all Geir could see at the moment. Geir exasperatedly shook his head and went and opened up the rifle crate.
Diederik worked silently to get Anna dressed in the last pieces of the mech suit, whilst Frank gradually seemed to calm down. Geir gave the rifle and two ammo packs to Anna, who put it down to put on the gloves of the mech suit.
“It is actually easier to work with the rifle with the suit gloves on, as it was designed to operate together. Otherwise the rifle is really too big for your hands.”
A few minutes later they were all suited up and ready, except for the helmets.
“Ok, here is what we are going to do,” said Anna. “We are putting on helmets and then we go through the safety tests. Then we grab the EVA safety harness gear, the radio relays and move it into the airlock. Geir, you are in charge of attaching us to the external mounting points of the ship. Once out there, nobody touches anything unless I say so.”
She touched the radio lever in the neck ring with her chin and that opened up the default radio channel.
“Jake, Anna here, can you hear me?”
“Loud and clear.” They all heard from the helmets.
“How close are we to touching down and being secured against the rock?”
“We are touching down in one minute and it will only take a minute or so to get us secured. Let me get this done first, then we talk.”
“Roger, Anna out.” She turned to the others. “Helmets on. Do buddy safety checks. Diederik help Frank with that, please.”
Just as they had completed the safety checks, they could feel a soft bump as the ship touched the rock and the landing leg suspension adjusted. Immediately a vibration sound, like someone drilling on the other side of a concrete wall, could be heard. This was the ship anchoring system attaching them to the rock.
Anna toggled the comms again: “How far will we be from the artefact?”
“It is just a few meters from the aft airlock and if I positioned us correctly I will be able to run a stabilising girder out over it. So you can easily attach yourself to that and the ship safety mooring points. I am using a robotic arm to drill an anchor point a meter from the artefact as well. Liza says the deep radar and the other sensors indicate it is safe to do so.”
“Ok thanks.” She turned to the others. “Let’s get this stuff into the airlock.”
After they had moved everything into the airlock Geir made sure all three of them were securely attached with a safety harness to separate steel runners along the inside of the airlock.
“Geir, you go out first. Attach yourself to the girder and then to the anchor point at the artefact. When that is done, Frank will disconnect you from the point in here. Then you Frank go through the same procedure and finally I do. You attach to different parts of the girder, so we don’t tangle so easily. Each one of us brings one safety harness pack and one raid-relay pack. Once we are all out of the airlock and disconnected from it we close it. Then we can take a look at the thing. Get all that?”
“Roger,” they both said.
“We are all going to be on the open channel all the time from now on.”
She turned Diederik.
“Could you close and secure the airlock, please?”
“Yes.”
“Ok, let’s do that.”
Diederik double checked that nothing was blocking the airlock and then pushed the button that started the process of closing the large door to the airlock. Once the airlock was closed Anna pushed the button that started the evacuation pumps.
“Keep an eye on the warning lights and tell me immediately if you get anything red or orange.”
As the air was being pumped out of the airlock Anna started experiencing the strange feeling that creeps up on you as all the sounds the ship makes gradually fade away. A ship is never quiet. Ventilation and pumps can always be heard in the background. Once you are in your suit in vacuum, you still hear ventilation and pumps, but now it is all internal to the suit. A much more intense and close-in sound when there are no other contextual sounds.
When the vacuum pumps stopped and the status lights for the airlock showed near vacuum, Anna looked at the other two.
“Any problems?” she asked.
“No,” both said and made the thumbs up sign.
“Ok. Opening her up.”
Anna pulled the lever that opens the airlock. A yellow warning light lit up and they could feel a slight vibration through their feet as the door started opening. Just as the door cracked open, the little remaining air that was still in the airlock suddenly became visible as a thin fog. The fog streamed through the crack that the door presented, and out towards the vacuum. Geir could see a shaft of bright light through the thin fog as the door opened. The light was from the bright external spotlights mounted around the airlock. A few seconds later the door was completely open and he could see what looked like a weathered rock slab outside the airlock door. It looked pretty much like grey granite with a subtle hint of red, with that surprising sharp detail that you get with no air to interfere with the light. Something that the light interfered with though, was most of the stars. The light was so bright on the rock that only the brightest stars were visible.
A robotic arm was just withdrawing after having drilled some holes and inserted safety mooring points.
When the door was completely open, Geir slowly moved along a handrail towards the door opening.
“The girder is deployed and secured,” said Jake. “You can moved out.”
Geir moved up to the girder which was deployed above the door and extended out five meters. He moved hand over hand to just above the artefact, which was right where Jake had said it would be. After attaching his second safety harness point to the girder, Geir carefully pushed himself towards the safety mooring point. He slowly drifted towards it and caught it with his left hand. He attached a third safety harness point to it. He wound the safety lines in so that he was more or less hanging just over the surface of the rock supported by the safety lines.
“Anna, can you release the one in the airlock please? I’ll reel it in.”
Anna released it and Geir reeled it in so none of them would get tangled up in it.
“Ok Geir, you are secure?” Captain Kay broke in.
“Yes.”
“Good work. Safety first. But we are dying of curiosity in here. Give us some close up impressions of the artefact.”
“Hmm. Not much to say beyond what the cameras showed us earlier. It is square. About 3 meters across. It has all these triangular patterns on it. The are different shades of quite dark grey mostly and some lighter grey pieces. It sort of reminds me of tile patterns from a Moorish palace, but with much larger pieces and the wrong colours.”
“Any thing that sticks out as different than the rest?” asked Liza.
“Not really, but I need to take a closer look.”
As they talked, Frank and Anna had started working on moving out and securing themselves. When they got done, Geir was very close up to the artefact, looking at it from different angles. It was complicated to manoeuvre in microgravity, as there were not many places to hold on to and stabilise.
“I don’t really know what I am looking at here,” said Geir. “If you had shown me this on Earth, I would have guessed it was a piece of art.”
“I have an idea,” said Frank.
“Yes?”
“Jake, could you turn off all but one or two of the lower lights at the airlock?”
“Yes, I think that is possible. Why?”
“The light is so strong with all of them on, that it is hard to see any height differences between the pieces.”
“Why would there be a height difference?” asked Anna.
“If this is more than an art installation, then possibly there is some way to distinguish some key pieces from the others. Maybe one or a few stick out a bit? We could see it because they will cast a shadow if we shine a light sideways along them?”
“Good idea,” said Captain Kay.
“It will take me a few minutes to find the subroutine that handles the door lights though, if I am only going to disable a few,” said Jake.
“I have an alternative,” said Anna. “How about we turn off all the lights and we use a suit torch to do the same thing. Much easier.”
“Ok, but the suit lights are a lot weaker.”
“We’ll just need a few minutes to adjust our eyes.”
“Good point. Ok are you three ready for me turning off the lights?”
“Roger,” was the chorus from all three.
Abruptly it was very dark and it got even darker as Jake turned off the positioning lights on this side of the ship. Gradually the stars started to appear as Geir’s eyes adjusted.
“This view never gets old,” said Frank as he looked up at the stars.
“Ok, I am lighting up a torch,” said Anna. “Geir, you are best positioned to have a look. I’ll light from behind you so you don’t get blinded.”
They spent ten futile minutes shining a torch at different angles trying to find anything different between the triangular tiles.
“Well,” said Geir. “That wasn’t it. A good idea though.”
“Ok, new idea,” said Liza. “What about ultraviolet? That may reveal something. I know that certain minerals show up clearly in UV.”
“Yes,” said Geir. “But these suits don’t have an ultraviolet torch. We’d have to get one from onboard.”
“Not really needed,” said Anna. “My suit has an ultraviolet torch. Let’s swap place. It is probably better if I light it from above.”
Anna and Geir swapped place, with Anna ‘standing’ on the rock and both Geir and Frank quite close to the artefact.
“I am turning off the torch now. We’ll wait a minute for the eyes to adjust again.”
Geir looked up at the sky and revelled in the Milky Way gradually becoming visible again. It stretched across the sky in a glorious river of light. A view that was breathtaking.
“Ok, ready?” said Anna.
“Hang on,” said Liza. “I am adjusting the cameras in here, so we can see better too. Now. Go for it.”
Anna turned on the torch and Geir could hear several people gasp simultaneously. Four equal patterns appeared clearly on the artefact. Three triangles in a pattern in each corner of the artefact.
“Wow, nice! Look at that!” said Geir.
“They are not that far from each other,” said Frank. “See, if you spread your hands like this you can…”
“STOP,” both Anna and Captain Kay shouted simultaneously, as Frank pushed the triangles.
Everybody was still and Geir realised he was holding his breath. He could feel a slight rumble through his glove that was touching the rock. Then the middle of the artefact slowly started descending into the rock.

I am working on 3d printing molds for composite layups. We're using PLA. I'd like to figure out how to get not just a smooth surface, but a polished one. I've been able to smooth the lines and get something that slightly reflects the environment around it using filler putty and high build primer, but it's got a real haze to it. From what I've read, I should use a buffing and polishing compound with a rotary tool. My hesitation is that I don't want to inadvertently heat up the pla and start running into deformation problems. It also has small, intricate parts that a rotary tool might not be able to reach. Would I be able to get a better surface by simply sanding the primer to finer and finer grits? The first image shows my current mold, while the second shows a good reference for what I'm aiming for.

2024.04.22 07:57 CIAHerpes I worked as a park ranger in Alaska. There were inhuman things living in the vast wilderness (part 1)

I worked as a park ranger in Northern Alaska for years, from when I was in my early twenties until my mid-thirties. At first, when I took the job, I was trying to escape, but over time, I learned to love it- the endless wilderness, the snow-capped mountains, the muffled way everything sounded during blizzards. With no light pollution, the stars up there look like tiny chips of diamond. And during the winter, the Northern Lights roll in, twisting and shimmering in strange, alien colors.
But a few years ago, things got much worse. People up here have started to go missing at an alarming rate. And I started having strange experiences around the park and the nature preserve.
One of the strangest parts of my story started on a freezing, dark night in 2018. I was on a snowmobile out in a terrible blizzard. The conditions were nearly to the point of being impassable. The snow was falling so thick and fast that it looked like a moving, shimmering wall of white on all sides of me.
Another ranger, a huge, lumbering man named ‘Ace’ Acosta, pulled up behind me on a second snowmobile. I looked at him, standing six foot six with majestic peaks stretching up into the night sky, and thought about what a great picture this would make. As I was looking around, I saw the faint tracks in the snow. Ace’s snowmobile lights were pointed in their direction, and I had been standing almost on top of them without realizing it- which is fairly easy to do when a few inches of snow are falling every hour.
At first, I thought it was the frozen tracks of an injured animal. I saw the drops of blood soaked into the superficial ice first. Following their direction with my eyes, I realized there were footprints pressed into the frozen crust leading away from me and towards the flat stretch of the tundra. I squinted, getting down on my knees and leaning inwards. I didn’t want to trample the tracks.
I quickly realized I was looking at human footprints- naked human footprints. But who would be out here in December in -40 degree winds without shoes? They would die rapidly out here. Just for me to drive across the tundra on a snowmobile required me to wear three jackets, long-johns, snow pants, thick jeans, a ski mask and multiple layers of socks and gloves with hand-warmers. I wore special water-proof boots with composite toes that wouldn’t freeze like steel toes. And despite all of this, I was still cold.
I moved forward, and saw handprints mixed in with the footprints, all of them bloody. The ice was thick enough to slice open human hands and feet, undoubtedly. The logical conclusion was unshakable- someone had crawled through here, maybe naked, on all fours, and their frozen body would be somewhere up ahead. I sighed, turning to Acosta. He still stood in the same position, his face covered in a red scarf with only his eyes showing. I saw one ice-covered eyebrow raise questioningly.
“I think we got us a body somewhere nearby,” I said, getting back on my snowmobile and starting it. He did the same.
“What kind of freaked-out tweaker would be walking around here without clothes on?” Ace asked in his deep baritone. “Man, I need a hit of whatever that guy’s on. I’ve got two sweaters and two winter jackets on, and I’m still cold. Eh, Kelton? Eh? What do you say?” He started elbowing me jokingly. I frowned, not responding.
Ace always had a smart aleck remark. He was next to me when I was interviewed for this job originally, down at the recruitment center in Washington state. The old lady doing the interviewing was a bloodless, angry-looking specimen of a woman with huge glasses that magnified her eyes twice over. She spat out each of the questions like a drill sergeant talking to fresh meat in the Army.
“Are you a member of any organized religion?” she had asked brusquely. Ace shook his head.
“No, ma’am, but I am a member of a disorganized religion,” he said. “We call ourselves ‘the Servants of the Old Ones’. We’re waiting for the ancient reptilian gods at the bottom of the ocean to awaken. So far, however, they haven’t responded to any of our texts.” I thought about this as I revved the engine twice, a sign that I was about to pull off and that he should stay close.
We took off, going slow and following the tracks as close as possible without destroying them. But the tracks just kept going, the bloodstains seeming to grow fainter as we moved forward- and strangely enough, the distance between the hand and footprints also started to get longer, as if someone were running on all fours and speeding up. We were nearing the beginning of the forest of evergreens when I saw a white flash just up ahead.
The thing that ran from us was humanoid, but I knew at once that it was no person. It ran on hands and feet, totally naked, its skin a pale, lifeless white color. It turned its head towards the lights of the snowmobiles briefly. I saw a hairless creature with skin that clung tightly to its simian body, its lips permanently pulled back from its mouth as if they were eaten away. Underneath it showed mottled black and red gums covered in thick, clotted blood. Its nose appeared as little more than two irregular holes, and its eyes- they reflected the light of the snowmobiles, like the eyes of a raccoon or opossum. They were huge and sunken in its starving, monstrous face.
And I saw what was leaving the bloody trails. The creature was, as far as I could tell, totally uninjured. In its permanently grinning mouth, between rows of crooked, sharp, blood-stained teeth, it held the body of an infant. The baby’s head lolled from side to side, the neck seemingly broken, and blood dripped constantly from its mouth and nose. It had deep puncture marks in its tiny parka, half-rings of teeth marks that must have broken its ribs. The bloodstains on the snow were becoming fainter, because the heart was no longer pumping in the body of the one leaving them.
I had a loaded rifle inside my snowmobile, and kept a 12-gauge shotgun slung around my back, mostly in case of bear or moose attack. I always kept the shotgun loaded with slugs, which were, in my experience, the most versatile ammunition for stopping any large animal. The .308 might take down a polar bear, at least with a good headshot, or it might just piss it off on a bad day. But a shotgun slug to the head or heart will stop any bear or moose in its tracks.
Of course, this was no polar bear ahead of me. For all I knew, it was something far worse. I looked down at the speedometer to see I was going twenty miles an hour, in the dark, in a blizzard. And yet this strange humanoid creature was still losing us, its seemingly never-ending store of energy still sending it forward at a superhuman speed. Its pale, bony legs and arms pumped back and forth so fast that they were just a blur. It kept its sharp teeth around the nape of the dead infant’s neck, like a mother cat carrying its young.
I kept one hand on the steering wheel while trying to free the strap of my shotgun over my head. I slowed down below twenty, and the creature responded by going even faster. It was making a break for the mountain forests that started only a few hundred feet away. I got the gun free and quickly stopped the snowmobile and raised it. I centered the sights, taking a deep breath to steady myself, and fired.
I missed, though I don’t know by how much. Shotguns had the drawback of being significantly less accurate at further distances than the rifle. But by the time I got the .308 out, I knew the creature would have long since disappeared in the thick brush and trees. By this point, Ace had also stopped and opened fire, but the creature had already gone.
“God damn!” Ace screamed. “That was one fast motherfucker. I can’t believe he got away after all that.” I heaved a deep sigh.
“I think we better go find out where he got that baby from,” I said. “We might have a lot more corpses on our hands than we realize.”

We found a radio in the snowmobile and messaged in what had happened, or at least the basic gist of it. I left out the part about naked, half-human abominations, and said that it was an unknown animal. There wasn’t much law enforcement up in these parts, because, hell, there were barely any people. The rangers as well as fish and wildlife agents regularly worked with the police officers in small towns, at least those that had police officers. Dozens of the local tribal villages had no police at all. These people would come to forest rangers and fish and wildlife agents most of all, and were always some of the county’s friendliest and most helpful residents.
By the time we got back to the original blood-stained footprints, the snow had covered up the tracks completely. However, based on the direction that the creature had been going and where the tracks had come from, I thought I knew where it might have started. Following the path in a nearly straight line led to the Lutna Peak Trailer Park. Ace and I drove off at max speed across the rolling hills and flat plains, the snow coming faster and heavier now. They say eskimos have dozens of words for snow, and after being a ranger up here, I can say I’ve seen every variation of it a thousand times. This was turning into the kind that was wet with huge flakes and tended to stick to everything. We would probably have to find refuge soon, especially if it got any heavier.
I heard the screaming before I saw the commotion. As we came around the sharp right turn where the dirt road turned into the trailer park, I saw dozens of people out, flitting like gnats around one of the trailers at the back corner of the park. All of the lights were on in that particular trailer, and I saw one woman comforting another who was bent over and crying.
Even though almost everyone knew us here, I pulled out my badge identifying me as a federal law enforcement officer. Up here, all the rangers were technically federal agents, allowed to carry guns and make arrests like typical police, except we were licensed under the Department of the Interior rather than under state law enforcement agencies.
I ran into the trailer, and after one long glance around the place, I knew there was no need to call for any ambulances. Ace followed close behind me, his heavy, thudding footsteps shaking the trailer slightly as he ascended the steps. We said nothing for a long moment. The entire family was dead.
There was blood everywhere, even spotting the ceilings. Most of it had frozen in the cold, and I wondered how long the door had been left open. Body parts were scattered across the floor, an arm in the corner of the room, a head standing up on the kitchen counter, even a random tooth embedded into the sheetrock. The savagery was brutal, and the amount of strength required to carry out such an attack must have been extraordinary.
“I think we’re going to need a lot more people on this than just me and you,” Ace said. I nodded, already bone-tired, and with so much more work to do tonight before I could go to sleep.
We phoned both state and federal authorities in the area. Since much of the land was tribally owned, we had to deal with multiple branches. Eventually we got CSI out there in the middle of a snowstorm, though they had to come from over three hours away. We just secured the scene while we waited, constantly being brought into neighboring trailers where townsfolk would tell us the latest gossip. They also brought us hot coffee and tried to milk us for any information we might have, as they usually did in such situations.
“No, Maggie, honest,” Ace was saying to one old lady wrapped up in an ancient fur coat, “I don’t know any more about it than you do. You can be sure that you’d know if I did.” By that point, police cars were slowly pulling in, one by one. Ace and I told them a simplified version of the night’s events, said goodnight and left the scene to them. I went home and took a scalding hot shower, trying to force the night’s coldness out of my bones. Then I slept deeply, though I had nightmares of that creature’s face turning to me, holding a dead baby in its mouth and marking me with its emotionless, reflective eyes. I didn’t know it then, but that would be the last time I would sleep in a bed for many days.

The state police assigned us an officer the next day, stating they wanted an official representative of their interests involved in the case. It was, by this point, a fairly high-priority case. We didn’t even have many assaults or robberies up here, less likely murders, and the murder of an entire family really stirred up the locals. The fact that the CSI techs couldn’t make heads or tails of it made it even worse. They hadn’t even agreed on whether it was done by humans or animals or a combination of the two, like men with fighting dogs who went berserk. With no leads, they wanted us to go back to where we had seen the creature the previous night and see what we could find.
The police officer who would be tagging us, a woman named Officer Melinda Jansen, had the look of someone who just started a new job, and doesn’t realize how terrible it is yet. She was all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and when she shook my hand, she nearly crushed the bones together under her iron grip. I saw Ace wince slightly when he shook her hand too. When she turned her back, he looked at me with one eyebrow raised, as if he were saying, “What can you do?”
It didn’t take us long to find the spot from the previous night. When we got close to the forest where the creature disappeared, I saw a branch that had been hit by a shotgun blast, and knew we were right on the money. In the daytime, I saw that there was a slight, curving trail through the trees here, maybe an old deer trail. It was just wide enough for us to take our snowmobiles through if we went slow. Occasionally, I would have to get off, being in the lead, and move large branches that lay across the path, but overall it was faster going than I had expected.
The trail followed across the top of a rolling hill, went down and then spiraled up around a mountain. We were high now, at least 7,000 feet above sea level, and the view went for hundreds of miles. It was breath-taking, seeing the frozen white landscape below us, mountains lining one horizon and the Arctic Ocean on another. A couple hundred feet ahead of us, however, the trail just stopped. I saw an opening in the mountain. Slowly bringing my snowmobile up, I looked into it and saw what looked like naturally-formed stone hallways.
The halls sloped down at a steep angle without stairs. An eerie silence radiated from the gradually thickening darkness. The other two snowmobiles cut out right behind mine, and Officer Jansen came walking up, flicking on her LED headlamp. Immediately, I saw a strip of light blue cloth. I walked forward, bending down to confirm what I had already suspected: that this was a piece of the missing infant’s clothing.
“That looks like more than enough cause to me. Let’s do this,” Jansen said. “I’d like to be back before sundown.” She kept walking without waiting for confirmation. Ace and I slung on our packs and turned on our headlamps. I tried using the radios and sat-phone to share our location, but neither was working. The bright, artificial lights showed that the natural stone walls of the hall just kept on descending into the mountain. A warm breeze blew past me, an acrid, sulfuric smell following in its wake.
“This is just a body recovery mission at this point,” I whispered to Ace, giving Officer Jansen a wide space so I could talk. “So why are we potentially risking our lives here? We should be waiting for back-up. We both know that the infant is dead, and has been for a while.”
“You know what I think…” Ace whispered conspiratorially, before a low shriek stopped us all in our tracks and ended conversation. I never did get to hear what he thought. By this point, it was much warmer than it had been outside, and I had the urge to start stripping off jackets. The shrieking had intensified, and was now being answered by dozens of others that surrounded further away in the stone halls.
Officer Jansen had pulled out her gun, which I saw with some astonishment was a .454 Ruger, a large caliber gun with good stopping power. I saw enough magazines strapped around her hips to decimate an entire herd of buffalo. I also pulled off my shotgun, making sure it was filled with lead slugs.
“Do you have any idea what we’re up against?” I asked her. Ace was right behind us, his shotgun already cocked and loaded, the muzzle pointed downwards. I was sweating heavily by this point. The air in the tunnel just kept getting warmer. It felt like I was walking into a sauna. Thin clouds of mist and droplets of hot condensation clung to the smooth granite ceilings. The hall continued to descend at the same steep rate, but now I could see something at the bottom: light.
“Not much more than you, really,” Officer Jansen said with a slight sneer. “My only advice is to shoot first and ask questions later. Kill anything that moves. This place has taken a lot of people already, people who were too fat and slow to watch their own backs…” I squinted as I examined the lights. They seemed to emanate from some sort of organism growing on the stone’s surface.
It wasn’t electrical lights, and it certainly wasn’t natural sunlight. It glowed like the lights of millions of fireflies, a purplish-blue color that painted the granite floors and walls in a totally different light. We were walking as quietly as possible by this point, but I still hadn’t seen anyone. We reached the bottom of the stone halls, where strange mushrooms glowed in the darkness, their mycelium giving off that black-light color everywhere as it stretched across the threshold of the opening. I turned off my LED, seeing my comrades do the same, then poked my head through, looking back and forth.
I saw more of those creatures from before, their lips missing, their skin pale, their eyes huge and rabid. They constantly twisted and snapped their heads to the left or right, as if hearing something only they could perceive. Two were dragging an elk that had been mutilated and torn down the middle. Another was dragging an old man’s dead body forward by the upraised legs. I saw the old man’s head was missing, his wrinkled hands trailing behind the body. I watched where all this activity was headed, then I gasped.
A huge, insectile monster sat lazily against the stone wall as these creatures brought it meat. The monster was so fat that I wasn’t even sure it could stand up. It had a blood-red, chitinous exterior with a hood like a cobra’s that extended around its head. Its teeth trembled together constantly as it shoved more gory offerings into its mouth, sending blood gushing forwards in thick clotted rivulets that dripped down its chin. Its long, thin arms had sharp knife-like digits, and its six legs branched like those of a praying mantis, splayed out on each side of its body, shining a dark red color in the strange light of the chamber. Its belly stretched far in front of its body, and with horror, I saw it drop a cluster of eggs, each as big as a dog. Their surfaces writhed and trembled, looking tight and ready to burst at any moment.
The creatures that fed and cared for this monster rushed over, dragging the eggs to the corner of the warm chamber. I saw that there were dozens more of them over there, and that some had already hatched.
Whatever that monster was, it had already given birth, and now those things were walking around, totally free to kill anything, or anyone, they wanted.

Apologies for the long post, but I just wanted to share with you all my journey to stepping on a bodybuilding stage for the first time. I'm 25 and I've been training for around 10 years now, but most of this time was spent messing around without any tracking or specific goals in mind. I got into pretty good shape this way, but in 2022 a regular at my gym asked if I competed in bodybuilding and I thought to myself - maybe I should give it a shot. So in July 2023 I pulled the trigger and committed to enter a competition in April 2024.

Prep timeline

I knew I needed to put on some size in order to be remotely competitive. End of July I weighed in at 202lbs and started a slow and steady bulk. Finished the bulk at the end of November weighing in at 222lbs. Then started a 19 week prep. My lowest weigh-in was 192lbs at 5 days out.
The goal during bulk was to gain weight at 0.25 - 0.5% of bodyweight per week. The goal during the cut was to lose 0.5-1% of bodyweight per week. Weighed myself every morning and tracked the weekly moving average. Here is a graph of my weekly moving average through the prep.

Training

I followed a 6 day Arnold split:
Before committing to the bodybuilding show I had been doing bouldering 2x a week, basketball 2x a week and during certain periods 100+km cycling/week. I dropped all of these in order to minimize any potential interference with hypertrophy training starting July.
I was following the RP model of periodization: 4-5 weeks of progressively increasing intensity (from 3RIR to 0 RIR) and volume (10-20 sets/muscle group/week), followed by 1 week of deload before resetting. With one 2.5 week long extended deload over the holidays.
As I got closer to the show I subbed out some of the more fatiguing freeweight compounds with machines and/or isolation exercises to aid in recovery. I also started tapering down the overall volume about 10 weeks out.
At around 10 weeks out I started posing practice - 5 days/week for 30 minutes + 1x 1h session with a posing coach per week (shoutout to my posing coach u/kingkalm :))

Diet

I followed an IFFYM approach, but mostly stuck to standard bodybuilding foods: lots of chicken, white fish, rice, potatoes, veggies, salads, fruit, greek yoghurt, eggs/egg whites, beef, pasta, sweet potatoes, whole-meal bread, low-fat cheese etc. I did leverage some highly artificial foods like sugar-free jelly and zero calorie syrups to curb cravings and manage hunger, but to be honest I never really felt all that hungry through the whole prep.
In terms of supplements I used creatine, L-citrulline, vitamin D, vitamin B, magnesium, zinc, fish oil (after I lowered fats druing the cut). I also used ashwaghanda which I've found improves my sleep quality, and tongkat ali + boron. As far as I can tell the tongkat ali and boron do pretty much nothing but I didn't see any adverse effects so continued taking them.

Cardio

During the bulk I was hitting 10k steps/day. Brought it up to 12k/day at the start of the cut and slowly ramped it up to an average of 17-18k/day by the end of prep. Since I wasn't willing to drop calories any lower this was the main variable I manipulated to maintain the target weight loss rate. There were a few weeks (4-2 weeks out) where I was hitting 20k/day when I was pushing hard for that final bit of fat loss. I didn't do any dedicated cardio on top of my daily steps, as I've found in the past that any activity that gets my heartrate up above 140-150 significantly increases my hunger levels.

Peak week

I researched some peaking strategies, mostly based on this article, ran a practice peak week at 4 weeks out implementing carb depletion followed by carb loading, as well as some minor water and electrolyte intake manipulation. Found that it didn't seem to make that big of a visual difference and made me feel worse so decided to take a more moderate approach for the actual peak week.
2 weeks out I was digging deep - 20k step/day + 2600-2800 Cal/day. Then for the peak week I dropped the steps down to 10k/day and brought up the calories to 3400/day with the goal of dropping some fatigue. Also cut my training volume in half and taking 3 rest days before the show only doing posing practice. Water and electrolytes remained constant. Around 3 days out I reduced my fiber intake to about 50% and only ate easy digesting foods to reduce risk of bloating. Seems to have done the trick

Show day

The show I did is the Granite City Classic. It's an untested show but I decided on entering this competition since the venue is in the city where I live, which makes the logistics of competing much easier. And also they have a 'first timers' class, where only people with no prior competitive experience are eligible to enter, which makes the show more approachable for someone like me, even though I knew I was going to be competing with potentially enhanced athletes. I ended up placing 5th out of the 15 competitors in my class - seems like if I had come in just a little sharper I could have easily placed in the top 3. I also entered the classic physique class but did not place, which was the expected result.
Still, I am very happy with my placing and proud of the physique I was able to bring to the stage!

Recovery

This was a one-off show so as soon as I got home and rinsed off the glaze I went off the rails with junk food. For the following week I was consuming 8000+ Cal/day and indulged in all the junk food and cravings that had been off the table for the last 4 months. Now, 2 weeks later I am sitting comfortably at a daily intake of 4000 Cal and not experiencing any cravings. My weight has stabilized around 207lbs and I feel pretty much recovered from the trauma of prep. This rapid weight gain was intentional in order to return me to a comfortable/healthy body composition and alleviate some of the harsher side effects of prep

The negatives effects of prepping for a show

Conclusion

Prepping for a bodybuilding show is hard, very hard. And the physiological and mental toll it takes on you is immense. And once you get to your goal look, you only get to enjoy it for a very brief moment. And the enjoyment is curbed by all the negative side effects that come with looking this way.
That being said... I loved every second of the journey, I loved the grind, I loved facing and overcoming the challenges along the way, I loved being able to push my body to a point I previously though impossible to get to. The competitive side of bodybuilding is a whole different beast compared to just going to the gym to look good. But in the end, the sense of accomplishment (at least to me) is worth it.
Looking back on my prep there are a few things I would have done differently: having a coach to provide an objective point of view would have been useful, leveraging some carb cycling, starting posing practice sooner, making the prep 4-5 weeks longer, and most importantly not allowing prep to take precedence over every other aspect of my life.
Now its time to take a long off-season to build as much muscle as possible to try and fill out my tall frame. And implement all the things that I've learned from my first attempt at prepping to push my conditioning even further. And, hopefully, next time I step on stage I bring home a trophy.
Again, sorry for the long post. I just had a lot of thoughts and feelings I felt like I needed to share. Hopefully you maybe even found some useful information in all of my ramblings. And a huge thank you to you all for providing me with a sense of community and making me feel like I am not alone in my effort to build the best god damn physique that I can.

Granite Composite Sink Install
We recently got rid of our old sink and have installed a granite composite drop in sink in its place. Plumbing-wise, things went well but we forgot to attach the clips or apply silicone when installing the sink. Today we took everything apart to apply clips and the sink would no longer fit in the hole. There is also no way to access the clips after its dry fit. Clips are NOT an option. Sooo we thought we’d use just silicone. The silicone tube must have been bad because it came out of the tube horribly and I was trying to apply it with the sink upright (against gravity). By the time the sink was set in, the caulk was like icicles and half dry and looked absolutely awful. We pulled the sink back out and I scraped off every last bit of caulk. Then we tried using plumbers putty but the weight of the sink was not enough to compress it and even if it was, setting the sink in moved half the putty. Anyways, I know any true plumber is already annoyed just reading about this disaster. What I’m hoping is that someone will tell me I can just keep the dry fit sink in the hole where it is and just simply caulk around the edges. Will it look unbearably horrible? All the sink needs is to be water tight. How would it not be water tight if we caulk the seam? Plz just tell me it’s fine so we don’t have to rip the damn thing out again…
