2024.05.26 00:55 De_dato Gorgeous city, but is the food scene lacking or am I looking in the wrong places?

Wife and I are here for a long weekend, did the EMF 10K this morning. This city is really incredibly beautiful, decent public transport, good coffee, but the one disappointing this so far has been food. We looked through the most upvoted posts on this subreddit with the “food and drink” flair and went to Kampong Ah Lee, Fava, The Outsider (very touristy area so weren’t expecting much), the Edinburgh Street Food market in the Omni Centre, and an outdoor food truck market in Stockbridge. All have offered just very standard or sub-standard quality, nothing particularly brilliant (except the hog roast sandwich from Junk at ESF). We found a superb pie/scotch egg place in Stockbridge (Harkness Pies) and a great MTL bagel place (Bross Bagel) in I guess Fountainbridge, but that’s about it.
What are we missing? We’re happy to go further afield, but all these places are rated like 4.4+ and almost none of them deserve it…
EDIT: Thanks to those of you who have given new recommendations! Where those recommendations are “Go to Greggs”, I’ll just add that we’re visiting from London, not the Moon…

2024.05.25 10:25 Confident-Holiday-29 Benromach 10

Benromach 10
Scotch Whisky Review #1
Purchased after recommendations from the fine folk at Cask in Oakland, CA and after viewing Ralfy’s reviews and stinging critique of chill filtration.
Integrity: Speyside single malt First fill cask matured for 10 years Hand-crafted No artificial color Lightly chill filtered
History: Produced by family distillery Gordon & MacPhail - an independent bottler who bought Benromach from Diageo after many, many decades of financial ups and downs and closures .
Nose: Plenty of soft smoke. Dark cherry sweetness. Stone fruit. The fruit has a stewed character. Earthiness, a little dirt, and leather. A certain “meatiness” that puts me in the mind of a cooked country ham. Faint ethanol in the distant background.
Sometimes I just appreciate opening the bottle and nosing this dram.
Palate: Tastes like a dark fruit jam from freshly picked dark cherries, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries cooked in a cast iron skillet seasoned and oiled with leftover fat from a country ham over a wood fire in a rainy forest setting.
Remember that smell when your mother or your grandmother made preserves and jam? Add some campfire smoke and you have it right here.
The smoke is evenly balanced with the dark cherry fruit. Some vanilla, and maple syrup mixed in, particularly once I get past the shoulder of the bottle.
There’s a great deal of complexity here and an unfolding of multiple layers of cooked fruit. Has a cooked and burnt sweetness. You taste every burnt bit of goodness scraped from the surface of the iron skillet.
An oily mouthfeel coats the roof of my mouth.
I don’t smoke anymore but I want a nice cigar to pair with this and a medium rare steak or juicy pork chop. I think that speaks to a certain “meatiness” of this dram. It’s complex and substantial. It just keeps on unfolding for you with every sip.
What would this be like un-chill filtered and at 46%?
H2O: Water tames down the smoke and opens up more of the dark fruit and sherry finish. With the neck pour it also takes the acidity of the fruit. Not sure that I like it as much after a drop of water with the neck pour, and for me some of the faint ethanol took a step forward. But, as I get past the shoulder of the bottle, a drop of water really reveals the elegance of the dram.
Finish: This one lingers for me. It feels stronger than 43% ABV and the smoke lingers on my tongue along with the fruit. I find myself still tasting the dark cherry sweetness of this dram 10 or 15 minutes later. It’s left a lasting impression on my taste buds. I just want more!
Empty Glass: Like smelling an empty pie tin, including the crust and the lingering fruit.
Final Thoughts: I am haunted by the experience of Benromach 10. I want to slam it for the chill filtering, however “light” or the 43% ABV which should be 46 at minimum. But, instead, I just let it be what it is and vow to get my hands on a cask strength version at 58.2%. Even at 43% and chill filtered, this is a singular experience, and one with great value at the $50 asking price. Benromach 10 reminds me of why I love Scotch whisky, why I am obsessed with it, and how I love the depth and complexity of a great Scotch.
Score: 90 (I am tempted to go as high as 94, but I’ll restrain myself)
Scoring Legend:
  • 95-100: Immaculate. One of the best things I will ever drink in my lifetime.
  • 90-94: Brilliant. Certainly would be considered an upscale Scotch.
  • 85-89: Excellent. There's always a bottle in my collection.
  • 80-84: Very nice. Perhaps only a fault or two about it.
  • 75-79: Good. Most likely to be served at some sort of work-related holiday party.
  • 70-74: It's ok. Would never be my first choice but if it's all there is it's all there is.
  • 65-69: Not great but not horrible. Possible mixer...
  • 64 or lower: Don't drink this

2024.05.07 23:12 History_lover_27465 Professors as ice cream flavors!

Albus Dumbledore - Whiskey Honeycomb: This flavor embodies Dumbledore's warmth and complexity. A smooth whiskey base blended with crunchy bits of golden honeycomb, it represents his deep knowledge and the sweetness hidden beneath his serious exterior. It's both comforting and sophisticated, much like Dumbledore himself.
Minerva McGonagall - Scotch Malt: As stern and sharp as McGonagall can be, this flavor matches her with the rich, smoky taste of Scotch whiskey infused with malt. It's a traditional flavor that speaks to her Scottish heritage and no-nonsense approach, but with a depth that reveals her caring nature.
Severus Snape - Amaretto Sambuca: Dark and intense, this flavor combines the almond-like sweetness of amaretto with the licorice punch of sambuca, reflecting the complexity and the hidden layers of Snape’s personality. It's a flavor that might leave you with a bitter finish, much like the bittersweet revelations of Snape's true loyalties.
Horace Slughorn - Brandy Fig*: Rich and a bit indulgent, this flavor suits Slughorn’s love of comfort and finer things. Brandy for its deep, warming qualities mixed with the sweet, dark notes of figs creates an opulent ice cream, perfect for someone who enjoys the company of the influential.
Filius Flitwick - Rum Raisin: This cheerful concoction matches Flitwick’s light-hearted spirit and charm. The sweet and slightly spicy rum ice cream dotted with rum-soaked raisins pays homage to his jovial and somewhat mischievous nature.
Sybill Trelawney - Absinthe Lavender: Mysterious and a bit eccentric, this flavor blends the potent, herbal notes of absinthe with a touch of sweet lavender, mirroring Trelawney’s mystical and unpredictable nature. It's an ice cream that promises a glimpse of the extraordinary.
** Hagrid - Moonshine Apple Pie**: A hearty, comforting flavor that fits Hagrid's giant heart and rustic style. Moonshine brings a strong, spirited kick to the sweet, homely taste of apple pie, creating a flavor that's as bold and straightforward as Hagrid himself.
Pomona Sprout - Matcha Sake: This flavor is a refined and soothing blend that reflects Professor Sprout's deep connection to the plant world and her nurturing spirit. The earthy, vibrant green of matcha represents her expertise in Herbology and her daily life amidst the greenhouses at Hogwarts. Infused with a hint of sake, the ice cream gains a subtle, refined alcoholic warmth, echoing the depth of her knowledge and the calm, steadying influence she has on her students. This sophisticated yet comforting flavor perfectly encapsulates Professor Sprout’s personality and her dedication to growth—both in her plants and her pupils.

Found a book about a Cairn named Pie Face at an antique store!
I saw the cover and figured it was going to be about Wizard of Oz or something, but it was just a cute little story about a stray Cairn who ate some pie and caught a burglar. A tough dog with a lot of personality in a little package!

2024.04.23 19:16 Responsible-Sir-4555 This is a short story i wrote a long time ago but left it unfinished, should i continue it? and also id like general feedback/critique

It was just another usual night, same routine; go to raymond’s club, get changed, practice my typical routine, preform, go home. easy right? easier said then done.
my name is carla mabey-carpenter
it’s the good ol’ 50s, and i’m a showgirl.
i’ve been a showgirl for quite some time, not years like my coworkers, but long enough to make decent pay. now i know what’s goin’ on in ya noggin’. “oh carla why would you become a show girl? you coulda been a nice housewife.” everyone i knew thought that about me, but what’s even more irritating? that they didn’t even have to say it. it’d be written all over their dumb faces.
i get out of my teal car and waltz into raymond’s club, and i’m one inch ahead of the door before i’m stopped, and who is it? raymond. i already knew his shtick, he was gonna ramble on about me being late and yadda yadda. i’m tired of hearing it and tune it out if i could without all his shouting and yapping.
“you are 30 minutes late! don’t you wanna make a quick buck? have a hot meal? a roof over your empty head?”
he said in his raspy voice from yelling. i roll my blue eyes at him, ready-ing my script in my head,
“yes i do raymond, you’re right it won’t happen again, i’m sorry.” i say blankly. “yeah, yeah, just get on stage…”
raymond said pushing my back towards the dressing rooms.
“big oaf..”
i thought to myself, i open the light adorned door west of the main stage and greet my coworkers.
“evening ladies.” i say while hanging up my coat.
“heya carla!”
said a pale woman in a southern accent, who i knew as victoria “vicky” vicky was the type of person who left a lasting impression on you, she was a looker, you could tell she was gonna have her name in lights one day.
“let me guess? was it crazy ray?” she said while fluffing her blonde hair.
“ding ding ding! we have a winner!” i said in a jokey tone.
“we’ll you betta’ get ready soon red, shows starting in 10.” vicky informed.
she called me red from my hair, i called her blondie. i walk over to my vanity and put on my blonde wig, raymond told me to wear it since i started, he said it because it was “unsexy” don’t know why, don’t wanna. i put on my makeup and outfit and sit in my chair, hoping by tomorrow i’ll make ends meet and pay my rent. theirs no way no how i’ll move back in with my mother. as i’m lost in space, my other coworker strolls in with 3 coffees, dotty. dotty was about as sweet as pie, your mind rushes to “now why would a sweet girl like that work here?” it was a unspoken rule here not to ask though. “how are you girls?” she grinned while placing the coffees on our tables. “ain’t complaining.” vicky answers. dotty and vicky make small talk while i stare at myself in the mirror. it had the name “Claire” ingrained on the bottom, we were allowed to choose fake names for ourselves, but raymond chose for me. he said because it meant famous in french. yeah right. me famous? who would want me in a movie- i’m back from space thanks to vicky snapping her fingers in my face. “red! come back from dreamland, we’re on.” her and dotty and the other girls walk out, leaving me in my seat. i sigh. i cross my arms while standing up. “gotta give these bozos a show.” i thought. me and the girls are behind the pink velvet curtain, i’m behind a girl whose real name i didn’t know but was called paige’s. i didn’t know her that well but from watching her she’s real two faced. always pretending to be everyone’s friend, (especially raymond’s) but mutters insults under her breath. i didn’t want to stand next to her. she was the type to tell you you’re messing up and make fun of you, and mess you up even more. i inched closer to an acquaintance dahlia. she was a closed book. she never said much and was always doing her own thing. i could tell this job wasn’t for her, heck it wasn’t for everybody. it took guts. it was the last resort kinda job, if you didn’t make it in a news outlet, a restaurant, babysitting, you’d be here. i glance down at my costume, then at the others, this weeks getup is a little better then prior, pink playsuit with cream colored accents and silver sequins going up the middle. i take a deep breath. inhaling how much i don’t wanna do this forever, exhaling that i’m a whirlin’ twirlin’ tramp. i know I’m never gonna get a serious job ever again. maybe when- my thoughts were put off when the curtains rise. i scan the ground floor to if theirs customers, it’s just two tipsy men sitting at the tables and the bar is full. “buncha wasted freeloaders” i grumble lowly. the music cuts on and me and the girls do our routine; we take turns singing the lyrics to the song, we kick our legs in the air, we spin. we finish and take our bows. it was crickets out there, not even a pity clap from raymond or the bartender. “we did good out there girls, i’m proud of y’all.” vicky encouraged. they were just bein’ sour grapes she joked. the group walked down the stage and i peeked through the curtains, not even a wink or grab. man we sucked tonight, raymond’s not gonna like this. i stroll to the dressing room trying to decide whether to get changed the fastest to leave, or the slowest so raymond can’t scold me. i wasn’t scared of raymond, i was scared of what he might do. he wasn’t very from reasonable, stubborn, and when you got fired, he made you regret it. i decide the slower option and dillydally. i drink the coffee dotty got me and go outside to get a paper from the stand. front page:
“the local mob and gangs are out of control here in the big apple, but are picky when it comes to territory. disputes are still ongoing and are just as messy and inhumane. stay safe out their folks!”
i look up from the newspaper.
“i just hope they don’t take this part of town.” i pray.
i head back inside to some kind of commotion, it’s that dahlia having a fit of some sorts? i stand front of the door perplexed, dahlia never made so much as a peep since i known her, maybe someone grabbed her and it got to her? i scan the room, all of the patrons have gone. maybe they got caught and ran out?
“Just shut up!” dahlia shouts violently out of the dressing room,
Raymond follows behind her.
“aw cmon doll face, you’re getting worked up over nothing.” he fake-reassures.
“Ugh! you don’t understand anything! Don’t you get i’ve had enough!”
“Hey YOU signed up for this!” raymond snaps back.
“i didn’t wanna be in this gig forever!”
she stretched her arm out facing the stage.
“You know it’s a big surprise that all this complaining and bossing is coming out of you Ann!”
i eventually go to vicky to ask what led up to this.
“what’s all this about blondie?” i whispered. “i’m not even sure, one minute she’s sitting at her table and the next she hits her fist on the table and storms out!”
i look at her then dahlia or “ann” i never seen so much anger on her face, she was always so silent and timid.
“complaining?! look who’s talking cheeky bastard! the only one bossy around here is you!”
“you’ve got a smart-mouth don’t’cha? since when did you grow a pair?”
“before i met you!” dahlia slapped raymond in a quick motion. he quickly brushes it off, unfazed.
“you can’t hit me!”
“sure i can, i don’t work here anymore. you’re not my boss!”
she growled. “you’re quitting? just like that? you’ll regret this and come crawling back.”
before she can spit another insult she grabs her coat and left in a huff. Raymond runs his hand through his hair while inhaling behind his teeth and turns to the bar and leaned on it. we all just stood there silent, waiting for something. finally vicky spoke. “let’s…go change girls…” they follow. i stay staring at raymond. after what felt like an hour i go up to him and see he poured himself a scotch.
“raymond…” i say softly he signed before he answers
“look…i just need a minute…i left your paycheck in my office, take it and go home …”
i wasn’t in the mood to linger much longer so i did as he said. only 15 bucks…that’s not even enough for half of my rent. the drive home was silent, and as soon as i open the door to my room i shift towards my bedroom and collapse onto my bed. glad that’s over with.
Tuesday•1955•morning
i laid in bed thinking about yesterday’s screaming contest, i wonder if raymond gonna be hard on us now for dahlia quitting, guess i just have to grin and bare it if so. i got ready for the day and locked my apartment door, i scanned my view from my balcony, “this city’s turning filthier going and coming.” i thought. since i didn’t have groceries i went to the diner next to my complex, it was shabby like the rest of the buildings round’ here but in a comforting way. i order bacon and eggs with pancakes, wasn’t the best but i ain’t hard to please, i pay my check and pick up some groceries as well decide to sit in the park. it was best to go there early morning since all the mobsters would hangout there at night and nobody wanted to be mixed up in their business, most of all me. who would willingly shoot people in middle of the street just cuz they looked at ya funny? i swear those men have no regard for other people’s lives. i sit on the park bench and pull out the book i’m reading; “the talented mr. ripely” it’s not a bad read so far, he has some traits i see in myself, we both live in manhattan, and he always felt different…like he didn’t belong. as i’m lost in my book, i see a boy walking his bike and a paper in hand. he sees me and gave me the newspaper. “free paper for the pretty lady.” i thank him and he continued walking. i guess it wouldn’t hurt to take take a break. FRONT PAGE:
“local mob boss fallon luciano claimed fifth avenue as territory, him and his crew is armed and dangerous, you don’t wanna ruffle this guys feathers, when will the gang wars end?”
i made a disgusted sigh, these cheap crooks are claiming areas where normal citizens live, and can shoot anyone they felt like right outside someone’s window. truly selfish people. i roll up the paper and rested it on the bench, before i take a deep breath, and get up and go home. i finish my house chores sit down in front of the couch, i scope out the living room and am proud of the work i did. damn…i’m so good at cleaning. although i wish i was good at other things. growing up i didn’t have many hobbies, i have a talent for singing raymond told me, but overtime i lost the passion for it. i’m just gonna get tonight over with, hopefully by friday i’ll have enough for rent. maybe with my savings i’ll go on vacation…oh…who am i kidding? my savings are enough for a 2 day trip to jersey. it’s not like i’ll go to hawaii anytime soon. i sigh, and turn on the television. maybe it’ll take my mind off things. after watching a tv movie i check the clock; 8:16 pm “shit.” i breath lowly i grab my coat and lock my door and drove off to work. i do the same routine once more, but i could tell the tension was still there from yesterday. some part of me was waiting to see dahlia, thinking she was exaggerating, that she’d be in the back of the dressing room with us, but she was a no show. i wave to red, she smiled softly at me then applied her lipstick. raymond’s not hovering around the dressing room or bar, so before i changed i went into his office. admittedly, i was curious to know the history between him and dahlia. i knock on the dark mahogany door “come in!” i heard before opening the door widely. “can i help you miss claire?” he asked. his feet on his desk smoking a cigar. “yes…” i answer while folding my hands. screw it just ask him popped into my head and i wasn’t one to sugarcoat anything. “you know what, i’m just gonna cut to the chase.” i say assertively. raymond raised an eyebrow. “how do you know dahlia? what’s your relationship?” i said crossing my arms.
he scaled me up and down “what’s it to you?” he said in a tired voice breaking eye contact.
“you obviously knew her before she worked here, she definitely knows you.” his eyes darted to me.
“it’s nothing worth to you paige…” his eyes drifted away from me, i pouted. after realizing raymond isn’t gonna dump his regrets on me, i’ll just give in for now.
“go on get ready now, it’s a big night tonight.” he shooed me.
big night? on a tuesday? hardly anyone came in cept’ your casual drunkard.
“oh, i expensed some fancier clothes for ya, shut the door on your way out.”
i nodded and left. i go over to the dressing room and see the girls taking extra time on their hair and makeup, considering how more put-together they look then usual. i am curious what raymond meant buy “expensed” for our costumes, i unzip the cover of one of the clothes on the rack and i’m stunned. i never seen such a beautiful ensemble before. i couldn’t tell what it looked like in full but it definitely looked expensive, a white tuft soft white feathers adorned with lace patterns all around, small white ribbons, and covered of glitter. it was incredibly gorgeous. it obviously wasn’t for me though, me being a backup dancesinger i wore similar clothes to the main dancer but lackluster. this definitely suited vicky more. i remembed to get ready at my table. and finished when raymond knocks and comes in
“hey, you girls look great, show starts in 5-“
he said in a cutoff he darted to me. “hey, why you wearing the wrong getup?”
“wrong?” i question, slightly cocking my head.
“your outfit was for vicky, and hers was yours, switch.”
my heart fluttered a bit in my chest, i got the beautiful outfit?
“break a leg, and don’t mess up.”
raymond said while shutting the door. i asked vicky “i’m the main dancer?” i said unsure of myself.
“yeah! raymond didn’t tell you? he commissioned that outfit just for you red!”
she said beaming, the beauty mark on her cheek moved upward. she looked really excited for me surprisingly, i’d thought she’d be a tad jealous. that’s what was so good about vicky, she was always so kind and genuine to everyone, even to those who didn’t deserve it. we changed and get on stage,
wow it looked even better on. red was right, it was made for me.
i’m feeling excited being the lead, not sure why but i am. suddenly i hear alot of chattering from the customers, i peek through the curtain and see a table of men in expensive looking suits smoking fat smelly cigars, they looked old, late 60s to be specific, and were shooting back whisky and bourbon like it was water. they were definitely gangsters. the loud talking, silver locks, heavy eyebags with faded scars. i decide i’ve seen enough. i knew i’d get good pay though, so that was something. i keep checking myself in the mirror, i start to sweat a little, if i look sexy enough and give these crooks a good time, i’ll make great pay. i was having the preshow jitters, i quit smoking 2 years ago, but i’d die for a cigarette right now. my train of thought was derailed by a even louder chatter, oh what now? did the queen herself waltz in? i didn’t even see who it was, nor did i want to. more then anything i wanted to do the show, get my riches, go home and pay my rent. hopefully i’d have some leftover and buy myself something nice. i caught myself daydreaming then felt a tap on my shoulder,
“claire, c’mon sweetie we’re up.” said dotty motherly.
i hear our heels clack on the wood floor in unison as we got to the wall of red velvet in front of us. the curtains raised; the lights dimmed and a spotlight hit us as the music cut on, i posed waiting for my chorus, i bounced my hips with one hand and the other in the air. i sang loud and it carried through the room, the girls harmonizing with me. i raised my arms like a ballerina, tilted my head back, rolled my shoulders. i looked at the entrance for a while til i heard a clink of glasses coming from the table in front of the stage, in front of me. i see a man sitting in the middle who is visibly younger then his company, downing a glass of beer, he Stares at me while sipping his glass, his eyes were small and serious, almost squinting. a strand of his black hair fell on his forehead, i felt like he was staring at something behind me. i broke my stare and flashed a huge smile like i was taking a family photo towards the crowd. “just smile and look pretty” i thought to myself, all to make better pay. i swayed my hips to the beat and tilt my head upwards singing the lyrics. the song ends, the lights dim. Few other patrons clapped, not the table in front. during the applause one of the older gangster men burst into a hearty laugh, the young one continued drinking despite watching me the whole time.
they didn’t see me at all. except…that one.
i bow whilst taking in some deep breaths, i thought about addressing the men, but after i got the spotlight and they didn’t so much as hear me, i didn’t wanna give them a share.
after i returned back stage, vicky congratulated me. she seemed genuinely proud of me, like i was training for this for years. too bad i didn’t think of it that way
“Red you did it! you couldn’t have done it better, you looked great out there.”
she says with her hands close to her chest.
“thanks vicky, your the best.”
i replied with a half smile. after she goes change, i couldn’t think of anything to relieve my pent up emotions, i was angry that i didn’t get more viewers, stressed about the stupid bills! having second thoughts about getting evicted, moving back home.
No. i won’t let that get to me, how can i relax before going home? a drink? no they mostly serve old fashions and beers here, not to be miss picky but is a simple glass of red so hard to get? then i remember one of the girls smokes here. i know, i know, going back to my old habits is bad, but i just needed a break, a smoke break to put it. i scan my surroundings for one of my coworkers who i knew had a pack, why i couldn’t just buy one? i know myself, i used to love-i love smoking, and if i had a whole pack in my possession i’d smoke it all in 2 hours. so just one is all i need to take the edge off.
i knew i seen dahlia smoke a few times, maybe she left some in her vanity, i go over to it and see it was decorated with some of her fiery personality, photographs of her and some of her friends it looks like, pearls strung around the mirror in a messy manner, makeup stains on the mirror and desk top. we all had the same vanity’s backstage so i knew there was a drawer, i opened it to see 3 cigarettes scattered around with some of her odds and ends. i take just the one and tell vicky i’m taking a smoke break, almost doing a double take at me.
“red! i thought you quit? isn’t it better to let old habits die?” she said in a whiny tone.
“hey it’s just one cigarette, it’s not like it’s gonna kill me.” i say defensively
“you know, i read in a magazine that it actually leads to lung cancer! you better know what your doing red!” she said like a apprehensive mother.
i decide to reply as a child “yes mom…i promise.” i respond in a sarcastic complaint.
she pouts at me while holding back some laughs.
“see you tomorrow red, love you.”
she waved goodbye while grabbing her purse, i wave back. now, all i need is a lighter, i knew the bartender had some matches so i asked him and he gave me some no questions, i go to the back of the building and open the employees only door and it’s another midday rain, thankfully theirs an overhang above me, “perfect.” i thought. i put the cigarette between my lips, (god i missed that feeling) i flicked the matches and it sparked but died out, i did a another one, then another one, then another, i’m on the second to last one, maybe the world is telling me i shouldn’t.
i hear the door open next to me, one of the girls came to smoke as well i assume. striking, striking, striking, no fire, last one. 3, 2, 1, nothing. then i hear a metal lighter click and light a cigarette, i hear a harsh deep inhale, oh it’s just raymond, he’ll light it for me. i turn to face him “hey ray, you wouldn’t mind-“ i’m taken aback, it was the young man with the gangsters.
i’ve heard the stories. the cold blooded, ruthless, brutal stories. he had a towering presence. i didn’t know what to do, my flight or fight senses kicked in, i thought about whether to run back inside, or reprimand him for being somewhere he shouldn’t. that’d probably get me killed. even if i wanted to get away, i felt like my feet were trapped in glue. people often forget the third option. Freeze.
i stand like a stiff statue and stare blankly ahead of me, hoping he didn’t hear what i said. a minute goes by and all you hear is the pitter patter of the rain above us from the overhang. and all i see is his huge puffs of smoke dissipate in the misty air. a shiver goes up my back as i realize i forgot to change. i facepalm myself in my head. i didn’t even notice my teeth had been chattering for a while. i felt a pair of eyes piercing me like pin pricks. i shift my eyes at him quickly, god he’s looking at me!
what now? i look away, was i being too noisy? oh god let this end well for me. just then i felt a brush of fabric against my right shoulder. is he…nudging me? i turn my head see to something you’d probably only see in romance films. he’s holding his suit jacket out…for me?
i don’t know what to do, do i take it? is this some sort of tactic? i stare and him in a white button down and the jacket for a little longer, until he finally spoke. “aren’t you cold blondie?” a deep husky voice.
vicky’s nickname i gave her…still i don’t understand, why would this “infamous” mobster give some showgirl his jacket? after he probably killed a man and threatened his family.
i decide to let whatever’s going to happen, happen. i look down at the ground while i grab it, it’s a good material. i hold it looking at it, it’s cream colored, well tailored, i feel like i’m waiting to see a blood stain or something or other to get a hint of what he does to his victims. is any of his goons gonna snatch me up? perfect opportunity; it’s raining. nobody else is back here besides me and him. i continue holding it while staring away. suddenly i felt a presence behind me, oh god! he’s gonna snap my neck or strangle me isn’t he? i close my eyes. hoping it doesn’t end for me in a split second, you’ve had a good run carla. maybe it was all—i felt him take the jacket and place it over my shoulders. i open my eyes widely
Did he just…do that?
i gazed up at him, he had a intense stare paired with denim colored eyes. i couldn’t tell if he was angry or disappointed in something, was it something i did? something i didn’t do? i knew i had to say something, he fidgeted like he was waiting in a long line, i had to think my words very…carefully.
“than-thank you…”
he nodded as he registered it and turned to the door to go back inside, i had to say something else, i wanted to figure him out.
“why’d-why’d you call me blondie?…”
his head turns to me while the doors ajar.
“you are blonde, aren’t you?” he said sarcastically
i wanted to say “no, this is a wig. my friends the real blondie here!” but what was more like a eep than a yes
“ye-yep…”
he turn to face me again, stepping closer, oh god he’s really close. i was hit with a gust of expensive wine and cologne, what’s he up to now?
he reached for his pocket and pulled out the lighter he used and lit my cigarette, i completely forgot about the cigarette. i don’t even inhale it just then, when he grinned before saying;
“i wouldn’t mind lighting it for you…” he said low and slow.
then walked back inside, i felt the warmth and loud music from the inside flowing out…and felt the warmth on my face from his presence lingering. i finally inhaled that longed for cigarette, the sensation fills your chest. the rain slowing down to a light drizzle, with that “after the rain stops” smell. his jacket still clinging to my shoulders, this mysterious cologne combined with the rain is a scent i don’t wanna forget and bottle up.
that was some smoke break…

2024.04.19 06:31 VeMas360 Suggestions for British Isles Honeymoon?

I am in the early stages of planning a honeymoon, and we were looking at visiting a few places around the British Isles.
Any suggestions, from places to visit, activities to do, other places to visit, places to stay, even other foods to try, we are very open to suggestions.
We are big foodies, but not very big into fine dining. We don't prefer the fancier ingredients or preparations. We want high quality common food. Nothing too creative. Just classic fare done well. We really want food that is for the common people, preferably at a price that reflects that. When it comes to dining we try to a avoid the more tourist heavy places if possible
Part of the trip invoves Dublin and / or Galway which are not in the scope of the UK. Belfast is, but we are not going to go to all three places. Likely the best prospect of the thee will move on to the final plans. There are some Irish staples we wanted to try.
We want to see the beautiful Scottish country side. Preferably stay in a place with a view. We might venture into Glasgow for activities and cuisine if needed.there are some Scottish staples that we want to try.
We definitely have our sights set on London for the majority of the trip. I feel it is where the majority of food and activities will be found.
I think we are willing to travel no further than an hour from these main locations. Whether by underground or cabbie
Now the main part. We want to try the best / most authentic versions of these dishes.
  1. The Full English Breakfast. One caveat, my fiance does not like eggs sunny side up. She prefers Scrambled. We definitely want the whole experience. Black pudding, beans on toast, fried up tomatoes. Everything it has to offer.
  2. Yorkshire pudding / Toad in the hole. It looks and sounds so tasty. Yes please!
  3. Spotted dick. At first it was just a meme. Now I want to give it a bite.
  4. Shepherd’s pie or Cottage. Not with just plain minced beef. Somthing more toothsome and meaty. Something with chunks of lamb or steak. Also real quality mash. Never dehydrated or pre-bagged potatoes. *(I found out Shepherd's Pie is quite different from the US)
  5. Fish and chips. I've had American fish and chips. I even love the malt vinegar on my chips. I want perfect flaky fish fillet with a batter that has a delicate crunch. Somthing caught as fresh as possible, and enjoyed universally.
  6. Scotch egg. I am in love with the idea of a Scotch egg, but no one around me serves it, and I don't fry at home. I must have it!
  7. Sausage Roll. I love sausage. I love flaky pastry.
  8. Haggis. I just want to try it.
  9. Bangers and mash. Not essential, as other items on this list share qualities.
  10. Cullen Skink. I love hearty fish soup
  11. Irish Stew or Scouse. A reminder of the stews my mom would make
  12. Afternoon Tea with scones. I intend on doing this a few times during the visit to get immersed in the experience.
  13. FINALLY! I am a huge fan of Indian Cuisine, and I have tried a few places in the US with varying levels of price, authenticity, and quality. I heard that the UK has the best Indian food outside of the Indian Sub-Continent. I need to visit a Curry House that will change me forever.
Now, with this list of foods that we want to try, and the general areas we would like to visit. Are there any suggestions of places that will provide the best version of each? Perhaps even a good version of multiple dishes at once so we don't have to travel to so many restaurants? I understand that most of this might be available in London, but we also want to spread things out where appropriate. Haggis & in Scotland for example. *(I found out Scotch eggs are not necessarily Scottish in origin.)
I highly appreciate any suggestions you might give. Especially from locals.
Edit: *Shepherd's Pie is different in the UK. *Scotch Eggs are not Scottish in origin.

Recent weeks saw a new low in the Left’s mad scheme to divide us all based on things, absent a time machine or an expensive plastic surgeon, we cannot possibly change. Like all such schemes it was led by academia, the University of Auckland in it’s wisdom deciding to reintroduce what American red necks had dispensed with ages ago, namely the designation of ‘special areas’ for a particular race. In the university’s estimation, Maori and Pacifica people are too fragile to mix it with the rest of us. From my years playing school boy rugby I can attest that ‘fragile’ is one adjective I would not apply to this particular racial grouping. It would be more fairly applied to the way I felt when faced by a front row of six-foot-five Tongan forwards bearing down on me in a line-out. Looking back, surviving away games playing Otahuhu College should have been rewarded with medals for bravery cast from the metal fillings in the teeth that littered the field afterwards.
However, on mature reflection (by that I mean a middle-aged man drinking a thirty-year-old scotch) I believe the Left may have this one right. Perhaps like myself and my ex-wife, maintaining a discrete (and court ordered) distance is the best thing for all concerned.
Here are some ‘designated areas’ I’d like to see…
DRAG QUEENS
I’d be generous here and give men who like to dress up as women a large area for them to play dress ups. It would be EVERYWHERE BUT LIBRARIES. Oh, and I better also include schools, kindergartens and anywhere kids are around and unaccompanied by an adult to alleviate their confusion. I expect these men would then confine their activities to certain inner city nightclubs where the idiot community are prepared to pay to hear a forty-year-old bloke with stubble, cram himself into a cock-tail dress and screech his way through I Will Survive.
THE LGBTQ…ETC…PEOPLE
I was against the painting over of the rainbow crossing on K road. I mean it’s K road for Pete’s sake. That place is gayer than Elton John in a pair of arseless chaps. Let them have it. Ponsonby too. It can be their safe place. If they stay there the rest of us will be safe too….from gender theory, lesbian haircuts and middle-age men in string vests.
VEGANS
Those poor blighters. Imagine the utter psychological horror they must feel when faced with a butcher shop window. Or just some guy in the street tucking into a mince n’ cheese pie. Better they move to a place more suitable for their delicate sensibilities. A wind farm perhaps, or a soy plantation or the entirety of Waiheke Island. And when they go they can take their tofu sausages and dandelion tea with them.
TEENAGERS
Acne-ridden faces, gawky limbs, voices with all the euphony of someone bashing a piece of corrugated iron with a hammer. Luckily most have the good sense to confine themselves to their bedrooms during that awkward age of 12-19. Unluckily it could be a bedroom in your house. Before the Labour government we had special ‘designated’ areas for them. They were called high schools. Now thanks to truancy rates they roam the country vaping their lungs out and trying to impress each other by doing ridiculous things on e-scooters. Time to send them somewhere they will do some good. The Army. The French Army. The French Foreign Legion, to be exact.
GANGS
Traditionally gangs have had their own designated areas, defined as the hell away from the rest of us. This has usually meant gang pads and prisons, the only difference between the two being there are more drugs available in prisons. The drugs in gang pads are usually all packaged up and ready to be sold to 15-year-olds. Personally I think we should designate special prisons for gangs where radical approaches are tried like banning drugs and making the prisoners get up before 11am.
And if gang members don’t like this and keep on with the raping and the killing and the pushing of hard drugs then we should designate another area especially for them – graveyards.
MIDDLE-AGED MEN
Long ago middle-aged men used to have their own designated areas – pubs, and for the materially blessed, gentlemen’s clubs. Both explicitly forbade the entry of women. This calls into question why the men in the later had to be gentlemen at all – the need to open doors and offer up chairs being removed by the absence of the fairer sex. But then along came feminism and with one fell swing of a handbag these men-only spaces were gone. Now pubs are full of middle-aged married couples looking out the window trying to think of a polite way to tell the other that they are loading the dishwasher wrong. As anyone who’s been in a long-term relationship with the opposite sex will tell you, time apart is a good thing. A night on the couch reflecting on that joke you made about her mother should be enough. Distance apart is even better. For example I never appreciate my wife more than when she is in another continent. This is not sexism. My mistress feels the same way and she’s a woman.
To hell with common humanity. Let us retreat to our own little corners and to the company of people who look and think like us. That way we'll be spared the embarrassment of mispronouncing a Samoan surname, or pretending to like vegan curries or making an indecent suggestion to an asexual person.
In short, we’ll never have to empathize, use our moral imagination or defend our own way of life.
Won’t that be great?

2024.04.09 17:04 Ars-Tomato Eidolon Cocktail Analysis and Speculation

Spoilers through 2.1 so read at your peril!
So I decided to do a bit of a deep dive on Gallagher’s Eidolons, specifically the cocktails they are named for, and things that might be fitting or nod towards his story and lore from the ingredients and cocktail stories themselves. Much like the rim of the glass for E1, take these with a grain of salt,
Salty Dog: A Gin and grapefruit juice cocktail, Some design notes or choice, grapefruit as a color and the color of this cocktail in general jive very well with Gallagher’s design, he’s a bloodhound and presents as a kinda salty ol flatfoot. Grapefruit and Orange are going to be kind of important to the color symbolism in his design, of note up here, one of Gallagher’s explicit traits of note from the other 52 family members on the suspect list was his orange eyes. Another ingredient note, Gin is a medicinal liquor that became widespread after the 1688 revolution led by William of Orange. The salty dog might be hinting just a touch of what is to come with Gallagher’s story, this won’t be the only time revolution shows up in the cocktail analysis.
Lion’s Tail: An Allspice, Bourbon, simple syrup and lime twist cocktail, color theory? On point. Allspice, Bourbon, simple syrup all fit the warm tones we associate with Gallagher, the browns reds and oranges, the lime twist a little splash of green which we see in his design. More important here is the ingredient of choice again, Allspice and pimento liquor which are used for the drink are of note because when you think cinnamon treats, pumpkin pie, and all that good stuff, those flavors are like cinnamon, nutmeg, clove. Allspice is the name the English gave pimento dioca because it combined all the best traits of all the best spices: all spice. Seems awfully fitting considering Gallagher’s 52 traits. The name is interesting too, the lions tail comes from the phrase “to twist the lions tail” a little provocation for a shit stirrer like Gallagher, the lion of note in history being the British, so kind of another nod towards Gallagher and Sunday’s beef.
The corpse reviver: So there’s two common variants of the cocktail, the no.1 and no.2, I’m gonna look at the number 1 since it’s more timely for the general prohibition vibe with Gallagher. It’s Cognac, Calvados and Vermouth, shaken well. First off, major props that e3’s image is of Gallagher shaking a cocktail, how intentional that is considering how many cocktails are shaken vs stirred who can say. But the corpse reviver is of note there because the no.1 doesn’t follow the quick and dirty rule of when to shake a cocktail, unlike many others in his cons, (this is all straight liquors, typically you shake anything that has fruit juices, syrups, dairy etc anything that needs to be fully mixed together, in this Case it’s mostly being shaked because it’s a morning wake up! Kind of drink and to fast chill the booze since most of the ingredients it uses are for room temp drinks) that besides, ingredients, Cognac is super loaded haha, it’s one of those liquors that’s gotta be from a specific region in France and produced a certain way or it’s not “real cognac” it’s very fitting here because Cognac is a Brandy, An aged distilled wine, known for dark syrupy colors, and specifically being aged in oak barrels. Oak… sounds familiar. This is also the process that we get the phrase “The Angels Share” from, the Oak flavors the wine, and over time soaks up a little bit of it, which then evaporates off, because this reduces the amount of booze in the barrel this is called as such for what the angels drank. Angels… Oak wood… hmm.
Anyways briefer notes on the other two, Calvados is an Apple brandy, again another one that is named as such because of the post revolution department in France it’s from. Vermouth is fortified wine, Aka wine with medical herbs, roots, barks, spices, extracts that’s been used since… well since wine was a thing. Medical liquor, fitting for a healer. Which leads us to the actual cocktail name, corpse revivers are “hair of the dog” drinks, something to pep you up when you’re hung over, strong enough to revive the dead (if only that was part of his kit in game) this lines up great with his healer role and marks a kind of shifting point in his boozy eidolon story from “whaaat me? I’m just a little guy, just a good little family dog don’t mind me” into evoking some of the death themes that are so important to his story.
Last word: Whew a lot simpler cocktail this time for a shorter read I promise. This is Gin and Green Chartreuse, Two medical liquors again, Green Chartreuse fits the running vibe of amalgamation that we have running with Gallagher, it’s another distilled aged alcohol made with 130 different herbs flowers and spices. The history of the cocktail is pretty lost to us, but two points we can draw on distinctly, it’s first rise to fame was at the detroit athletic club, where it was the most expensive drink on the menu (tho only $10 bucks adjusted for inflation. 🥲 imagine the most expensive cocktail at a bar costing just $10, you can barely get a rum and coke for that these days) the name I think is probably pretty self evident besides, we’re firmly into the death imagery here, especially IMO because rather than “Famous last words” it makes me thing of the more antagonizing “any last words?” Fitting for a killer.
Intermission: So the last two cocktails, are part of why I read such a strong sense of narrative from Gallagher’s Eidolons, and a little broader analysis of him supports this sort of reading. So with a little more context before we get to 5 and 6, Something I’d pitch in and haven’t seen focused on much with the 13 bit he talks about, is it might be a bit of a play on words,
There’s 12 hours on a clock face, A day “grows old”, and Penacony has 12 different “time zones” moments for dreamers to explore such as the magic hour (midnight) when we have our date quest with firefly, because we know there’s a level or “real” layer of Penacony that is only accessible through (dream?) death, this 13 might be less of an age, and more of an additional fold of the dreamscape, one designed by the watchmaker as a final safeguard to their legacy.
This could all kind of line up, with Gallagher as the avatarepresentation of that 13th “houtime” and doubly so if we entertain the 13th arcana tarot theory, he is 13, as in the death tarot and a dream scape entity.
An additional bit of funny on it would be that the “thirteenth” hour of the day, would come one hour after noon, AKA
death in the afternoon: Gallagher’s 5th eidolon. Doubly checks out because of what it’s made of, champagne (ala his ultimate) and Absinthe (which gives us the phrase “chasing the green fairy”, seems appropriate considering the way Firefly was chased around by death) Absinthe is a Herbal Liquor spirit, which became famous for it’s alleged psychoactive and hallucinogenic properties that’s like the Bohemian lifestyle is associated with historically, especially many fanciful authors like Hemingway, Lewis Carrol, James Joyce etc. the cocktail was named for Hemingway and his book, which is about bull fighting, more on that later. The herbal ingredient of note in absinthe is Wormwood, which has been a key player in many of our other herbal liquors.
Blood and Sand: named for the 1921 movie and for what comes after bullfighting, blood on the Sand of the arena floor. There’s even something about the way firefly is attacked that evokes that bullfighting idea, the way it charges, knocking the trailblazer out of the way before literally “Goring” Firefly. some last cocktail notes of interest, blood and Sand is made with Blood Orange, Vermouth, Cherry Heering Liquor, and scotch. All which fit the themes we’ve discussed so far, Vermouth was used for medicine fitting for a healer, Heering Liquor aside from cherry red = Fire in my brain is made with neutral grains fitting for an abundance character, Gallagher itself is a Gaelic name fitting with scotch whiskey which is made with that same “Angel’s Share” process we discussed with Brandy, and blood orange (the actual fruit not the paint color, rich, dark organge turning into purple-y magenta. think grapefruit) is kind of a dead ringer for that rich magenta hue we’ve come to associate with both Gallagher and the memetic entities.
(Bonus points to folks who’ve seen the excellent Ashikai video for Genshin Impact lore on Magenta, is a very good fit here as well for Gallagher and our presumed lore. Long and short of it being, Magenta isn’t a real color, it’s not a spectrum of light, but instead the way our brain fills in the sensory perception of the “space between red and blue that includes no green” perceiving something that isn’t real tangible sensory information, but understanding it implicitly by the things it is not? Sounds very fitting for someone who’s frankensteined together traits from 52 different family members.)
So in summary, that’s my horoscope read of Gallagher’s drink eidolons. Which is to say, I’m using everything from art theory to history, to mixology and medicine in order to draw some connections here. So any and all of this could be overreaching by far and thus I’m calling it kind of a horoscope lol, the simplest explanation being of course if you were to google a list of prohibition era cocktails, you would see all of these names, and if you just picked out the ones that sounded “Death-y or Dog-gy” you’d probably get pretty close to this list anyways, but maybe there is a touch more to it.
All told, I think a lot of Gallagher’s core themes, from biting back at the family, his color design, healer kit and path, maybe even a sort of story being told through the cons leading up to some fateful murderizing all could be hinted at in the cocktails they chose to name his Eidolons over.

Julius 24, 1923 A.V (10:00 P.M)
Jacobs Residence, Liverlake
Mark Jacobs
He shook his head, trying to psych himself out. He was back. It had been three years since he last stepped in Liverlake. That was quite a long time ago, now. He and his squad had a hectic three weeks, doing missions back to back. Incidentally, they were the highest performing team among all hemolite squads and had a near-perfect track record, which earned them a full week break courtesy of Colonel Thatcher.
With the free time he now had, he decided to go back to his hometown and visit his mom. Of course, he brought Olivia with him, who was extremely excited to meet his family. Additionally, Mark also invited the rest of his squad to join him on a ‘field trip’ in his hometown. He just didn’t expect that everyone would accept the invitation...
“We stick out like sore thumb,” Mark chuckled, shaking his head as he stepped out of the bus.
“What makes you say that?” Louis rolled his eyes, as he followed behind Mark in full uniform.
“Maybe the fact that you’re in full uniform?”
“Hey!” Louis frowned. “This uniform is cool alright?! Besides, the people would panic seeing some strigoi, man! We need the uniforms as a distinction. All you humans are so fuckin’ sensitive, like, for real!”
“I’m just going to visit my mom for a day,” he replied. “Then you guys can lose the uniform when we can take a train back to New Lundun and Dante. But you know, you could have just worn the armband and off-duty garments. You know? Like Olivia and Emma?”
“Ugh, but it doesn’t look as epic.”
“Lou, will you shut up?” Emma groaned.
“Alright, boss! No complaints from me. Nope, nuh-uh, nada.”
Mark sighed, rubbing the sides of his head. “I don’t know why I even invited you guys,” he said.
A woman beside him chuckled, taking hold of his hand and squeezing it lightly. “Because you care about them,” she smiled. “And because they might get into trouble if you don’t keep an eye on them. Seriously, would you trust Louis and Emma to be set loose on their own in Westminis? If it were Phineas and Zach, I’d be confident with leaving them with a loaded domina. I can’t say the same for the siblings.”
“Thanks for reminding me, Liv.”
“Uhm, Sir. Where do we go, exactly?” A younger-looking man asked, tapping on Mark’s shoulder.
He looked at him, giving the man a warm smile. Charles. He was the newest member of his squad and came in about two weeks ago. He was the youngest member at only 18 years old and was practically still a kid. At least, he was in the eyes of all the other squad members. Despite that, he had proven that he was truly a soldier in his own right, and was by no means a pushover. Charles went through a trial of fire; thrust into several missions immediately and reasonably holding his own despite the rough schedule and dangerous environments.
“We’ll head over to my mother’s house, and probably drop you guys somewhere fun for the night,” Mark answered. He stretched out his arms looking at the night sky. The city lights and structures reflected into his eyes. It wasn’t as pretty as what New Lundun used to be, but he’d be lying if he said it wasn’t beautiful. “There’s a few bars around here, or maybe you want to see something a lot more interesting. I know a place that might interest you all.”
“Oh, no bars for me please,” Zach chuckled nervously. “I-I can’t have alcohol. I get really out of control.”
“Oho! So nerdy here is a party animal, huh? That’s something I’d pay to see!” Louis grinned.
“Seconded,” Emma hummed.
“Alright, alright. No bars. Any encouragement from you two is a troubling sign. I want you all to behave yourselves, this city isn’t as accepting of dantenites and duskwalkers as New Lundun. But I’ll take you all somewhere fun, don’t worry. I just need to see my mom first.”
“Booo! Bori—” Louis suddenly coughed, having the wind knocked out of him, from his sister’s elbow to his gut.
“A-alright. We’re visiting the boss’ mom. Fuck, that hurt.”
Mark stifled a laugh and led the way, walking down the street with Olivia by his side. Zach, Louis, Emma, Charles, and Phineas followed behind him. The latter of which, had kept quiet the whole time, and simply observed their environment. The rest didn’t seem to mind Phinneas’ quiet nature and had instead grown accustomed to it. He never said anything if it wasn’t insightful or important. He was always the silent one in the group, but he was a master tactician and the best sniper the Hemolites had.
It was what earned him his callsign. Scope. Zach on the other hand, being their best technician and general knowledge about all things strigoi, was called Bookworm. Louis was called Shield due to his impressive durability. His sister Emma was given the name Huntress because of her speed and tracking abilities. Olivia was called Ambush, which seemed to be her specialty in missions. Charles was named Badger, because of his ferocity on the battlefield despite being so young... Lastly, Mark was simply called Boss, since that’s what his team called him anyway and it stuck with him.
“So, are you excited to see your mom again?” Olivia asked, smiling up at him.
“I, uh, I’m actually pretty nervous.”
“Shouldn’t that be me? I mean, I don’t even know if your mom would approve of… you know. Me?”
“I’m sure she would. You’re a lovely woman. It’s just, I haven’t seen Mom in three years. I had tried to get away from her because I always felt that she was pretty controlling. I wanted my own freedom, and I wanted to do something on my own. She’s a great mom, don’t get me wrong. She took care of me all by herself. I just don’t know how she’d react to seeing me again after so long… and considering the fact that I left—”
“I’m sure she loves you, hun. Besides, you’ve accomplished a lot already. You’re about to be promoted to Captain O-3, right? You’ll be commanding more than just a squad soon, and that means people see greatness in you. I’m sure your mom would be proud. That also means we’ll need a squad leader, but we can talk about that another time."
Mark smiled, sighing to himself. “I’m gonna miss all you damn mentally challenged fucks. You’re right, though. I mean, I guess she’d be happy to see me. I’ve done something to be proud of,” he squeezed her hand. “I’ll be coming home as a soon-to-be captain officer of a military branch, and not a tram driver in New Lundun. Maybe.”
“Oh stop being nervous, you’ll do great.”
“Alright, alright. Fiiine.”
Olivia chuckled and planted a soft kiss on his cheek. “Hey,” she said, keeping her deep red eyes on his. Golden brown staring back into hers. Those beautiful eyes of his always captured her attention whenever she found herself looking at them. He would often hold her close whenever she did, pressing the duskwalker to his warmth. “Hey,” he replied.
“I love you, Mark.”
“I love you, too, Liv.”
“Ewww!” Louis interjected, groaning loudly. Emma elbowed her brother’s side, scowling at him. “Rude,” she said. The siblings continued to bicker and make snarky remarks as the trip went on. Mark led the group down the road before turning to a street and entering a subdivision. They were stopped by the stationed guard at first but were let in after he showed his ID. He continued walking forward and took a left. There, a house with an old picket fence and a small garden stood at the very end of the line. A corner lot. Two floors with the paint starting to chip off at the sides of the wall. There were lights on inside.
“I guess this is it,” Mark said to himself, opening the fence gate and walking right up to the front door.
“You’ve got this. Just keep it cool,” Liv encouraged.
He nodded at her in response, taking a deep breath. He placed his hand on the door, feeling the smooth wood on his palm. His hand shook slightly as it reached for the doorbell. Pressing it had been the most difficult thing he had done that night. The bell rang out, echoing throughout the house. Footsteps could be heard after a minute, slowly approaching the door. Mark could feel his heartbeat thump in his chest, matching the pattern of the footsteps from deep inside of the house. He thought he felt it skip a beat when the door finally opened.
An older-looking woman stood in front of him. She had pajamas on, holding a book in her hand. She had long graying hair, rosy cheeks, and a gentle face that looked similar to Mark’s. It was evident where the young captain got his features from. She stepped back in shock, placing her hand over her mouth. The woman shook, clutching the door. “M-Mark?”
The young squad captain forced a pained smile. “Hey, mom.”
“I—”
“I know. I know. I’ve been gone for so long. Not a call, not even the occasional letter,” Mark said, not able to look at his mother’s teary eyes. “I’m sorry. I know you must be furious with me… or maybe you wouldn’t want me arou—”
The book dropped from his mother’s hands, as she stepped forward. To his surprise, he felt her collide with him; arms wrapping tightly around his frame. She held him close, running her hand through his hair. “I missed you so much…”
“I-I missed you too, mom.”
“Look at you!” she laughed dryly, still wiping her tears away as she stepped back to take a good look at her son. She placed a hand over her mouth to cover her wide smile. “You’ve grown so much! I can hardly recognize you! Are you in the military? Do you fight out there? Y-you better be keeping yourself safe! Oh Sol, if I only knew!”
“Mom, I’m fine. I’m actually uh… w-well. I’m getting promoted and I’m fighting the good fight.”
His mother gasped. “P-promoted?! Oh, Sol, I-I’m so proud of you, son!” she smiled trying to stop the tears. “What are they feeding you there? You look a lot bigger! I-If you’re staying I’m not sure your old clothes will fit you anymore! H-have you had dinner yet?!”
“Uh… no?”
“Oh, what?! You should have told me you were coming to visit, I would have prepared a whole feast! I could’ve made your favorite pie a-and—” she paused, noticing the group of people behind him. Olivia gave a shy smile, waving her hand.
“Mark Jacobs, are these your friends?”
“Yeeees?”
“Did you at least treat them to some food?”
“Uhhh,” he chuckled nervously.
“Well, at least it’s nice to see my boy hasn’t changed. Please! Come inside! I-I’m Mark’s mother!”
“I-It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Jacobs!” said Olivia, a hint of nervousness in her voice.
“Oh please, just Miss Jacobs is fine. No, actually just call me, Diana. It is a pleasure to meet Mark's frien—”
she paused, taking notice of Olivia’s eyes and ears. She glanced at Mark’s other friends, seeing Louis and Emma. She cleared his throat and shook her head a bit. “U-Uhm… son, are they…?”
“Yeah Mom, they’re from Dante. D-don’t worry, they’re harmless! Well, most of the time.”
“Well, there's no judgment in this household. I-I’m just not sure if I have anything to uhm… serve them?”
“It’s alright Miss Diana, we already uh, fed beforehand. I assumed Liverlake wouldn’t be as accommodating to Dantenites and duskwalkers as New Lundun,” Olivia chuckled softly. “We’re just here to accompany Mark and have the honor of meeting you. You are really beautiful, I can see why Mark looks pretty now.”
“Oh, you!” Diana giggled, smiling wide. “Mark, why don’t you bring any lovely woman like her around here?”
“Ah, haha! About that…”
“Yes?”
“Actually Mom, uh, this is Olivia,” The young captain cleared his throat, scratching his head in embarrassment. He reached out, taking the duskwalker’s hand. “She’s my girlfriend. Well, I guess partner would be a more appropriate word. She’s more than just that. I’m really happy to introduce her to you.”
“O-oh, my… Well, Mark you really, oh wow.”
“I know she’s not… uh, human. But mom, she's an amazing woman and I’m very happy with her.”
“Oh no, not that! I have no issue with that,” Diana laughed softly, smiling warmly at the two.
“You don’t?” said her son, raising a brow.
“Not at all. But wow, my son got someone like you…” she said, her eyes scanning Olivia up and down. “H-he’s not giving a nice girl like you any trouble now, is he? I-I know my son could be a handful sometimes. He’s always been headstrong as a child, sometimes a little too much—”
“Mom—!”
“N-not at all, Miss Diana! He’s very sweet, in fact. He treats me well. Sometimes a little too much,” Olivia replied with a suggestive glint in her eye. Diana turned red and looked back at her son, clearing her throat.
“Son, you better tell me if I should be e-expecting grandchildren soon!”
Mark groaned, shaking his head. “Humans and Strigoi can’t have kids, Mom. The biology is just too different. I think.”
“Oh, that’s too bad. But you better adopt! I want a little munchkin to spoil!”
“We’ll… think about it, Mom.”
“Well, while you do that, please come in, all of you! There’s plenty of room, and make yourselves at home!”
The rest of the squad entered inside. Louis and Emma were surprisingly on their best behavior, taking a seat on the couch. Phineas sat on the floor while Zach was practically gushing over the book collection Mark’s mother had. Charles was walking all over the place, checking every room.
Diana headed for the kitchen and scoured the fridge for something to cook. She opened the meat section and took some still fresh chicken she had bought the day before. Mark and Olivia joined her, and they soon began to cook while sharing stories with each other. Obviously, as a mother, it was Diana’s job to embarrass the young captain in front of his partner, with stories of his childhood antics.
I missed you, Mom. He thought, smiling at her as he continued to cook. I promise I’ll visit more often. You must have been so lonely without me here. Don’t worry. I’m back. I’ll be here more.
They called everyone to the table as soon as they finished cooking. The three strigoi couldn’t have what the rest were having, but they were content with simply sharing stories around the table while the others ate. It had been a fun night, spending an hour or so on the table.
“And I said, ‘Well have you looked up your ass?’, and the fucker's face was so red!” Louis laughed out loud.
The joke seemed to have sold the most with Charles, who was practically wheezing on his chair, clutching his stomach from excessive laughter. Zach chuckled, while Diana rubbed her temples. Phineas had seldomly said anything, but he was smiling. Emma, however, pressed her face down on the table from second-hand embarrassment.
Mark snickered, his arm wrapped around Olivia’s shoulders. “Well, Lou, you really showed him why he shouldn’t leave his things… behind,” he joked, prompting groans from the entire team. “Mark, you’re disowned.” Diana chuckled, bringing comedy back to the dinner table.
Everyone laughed out loud, with Charles practically dying and rolling on the floor. “Well, it’s been a nice night, but we’ll be going out for a bit, Mom,” said the young captain. “I promised these assholes an exciting night, and I sadly must deliver,” he sighed.
“Oh, Mark, come on now. You’re gonna let your mom do all these dishes?” Olivia raised her brow.
Diana shook her head, putting her hands up. “Oh no, it’s alright! I’ll handle everything here, I want you all to enjoy yourselves. It’s been a while since I had this much to clean up, and I’m actually happy about it!” she chuckled, getting up from her seat and stacking everyone’s plates. “My boy is growing up so fast. It’s not every day he comes around, so I’ll take care of it for now. Please, have a fun night. Take good care of each other. I’m so happy for the two of you,” she smiled warmly, placing a hand on Olivia and Mark’s cheek.
The squad got up from the table and thanked Diana for the food before heading to the living room, waiting for their leader and second-in-command. “Mom, c’mon let me help you with that.”
“Mark, really it’s okay.”
“I feel bad. Olivia would scold me if I let you do the work too.”
He grabbed a plate and started rinsing it before taking a sponge and some soap. “So uh,” Diana cleared her throat. “How are things going in the military? It’s been… so long Mark. I-I mean you’re a commander and you have friends that look up to you. You’re so big and strong now, and you have a girlfriend w-who’s a duskwalker. I just… never imagined.”
“Mom…”
“Oh no, I didn’t mean it like that. I’m really proud of you, son. Honestly. You’ve changed so much.”
“I guess I have, huh? I’m sorry Mom. I was… selfish.”
“Hm? What do you mean?”
“I thought… no, I felt that you were overbearing and overprotective. Just controlling all in all, and I wanted to have my own life. I wanted independence. So the moment I had the chance when I finally finished school, I just left. I just set out to go make my own life, and I pushed you to the back of my mind,” he sighed deeply. “I know that it must have hurt you. I’m sorry for not calling or coming to visit sooner, but I want you to know that I love you, Mom. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me. Raising me on your own is nothing short of amazing.”
“Oh, Mark. It’s okay for a man to leave his mother to start his own life. I was… hurt, yes. But I knew that you would do great things and that your heart was in the right place. I’ve forgiven you a long time ago. Ever since you walked out that door, I’ve forgiven you and respected your decision. I love you too. I want nothing but the best for you, my boy. I’ll always be here, you know? When the world is out to get you, they’ll have to go through me first.”
“I love you, mom.”
“I love you too, Mark. Now, you take care of that girl out there, too. Treat her well. I know I raised a gentleman, and I want to hear nothing but good things. Do you understand me, young man? Whatever problems the two of you face, you face them together. It should be the two of you versus the problem, not each other. Oh, and please invite me to the wedding, okay?”
“Mooom!”
“Okay! Okay. Now you go out and have fun, alright?” Diana smiled, putting away the cleaned dishes on the rack.
Mark nodded. He hugged her tightly and kissed her on the cheek. “We’ll come back before morning, Mom. They can have my old room, I’ll sleep on the couch. They need a place to stay to wait out the sun.”
“Sure! I’ll prepare your bed and find some extra blankets. Now go have fun! Don’t let me keep you!”
Mark went to the living room to call the others, heading out the door. His mother saw them out the door, waving to them goodbye. “Come back before morning! I love you, Mark! Take care, son!” she smiled. The hemolites then left the house, with Mark waving goodbye to his mother before they set off for the city again. “So,” Louis coughed. “Where are we heading this time, boss?”
"Yeah,” Zach chipped in. “You got something special for us?” he asked.
“Something like that.”
He led them around the city, walking around the street and passing some stores along the way. Brick buildings with silver and brass highlights, sporting lights, and glowing signs. Walkers were moving around along with the general population crossing the roads. There were some wheeled vehicles and even a few cars on the road as well. What was most popular in Liverpool, however, were its monowheels. Motorized transports that were similar to bikes but utilized only a singular large wheel, with all the internal components and the driver sitting inside. There were dozens at some parts of the road, waiting for pedestrians to cross and lights to turn green.
They took a right and followed Mark into a sort of… red-light district.
“Uhhh, Mark. What the fuck is this?” Olivia raised a brow.
“Don’t worry, we’re not going anywhere too suspicious. But I used to crash here in my teens,” he said as he entered a small building that looked like a bar.
What was inside was a whole lot stranger. There was a mud pit in the center, with two men wearing only shorts wrestling each other into the mud.., An announcer was on top of a bar chair, screaming into a microphone.
“—And there goes the Thumper! Looks like the Mud King bags this round folks! Any challengers?!” the announcer called out. “Anyone who wants to steal the title champion, from the Mud King?!”
“Mark… what is this?” Olvia raised a brow.
“The fun part..?”
“I CHALLENGE THE MUD KING!” Louis said with no hesitation.
“Alright!” The announcer replied. “Looks like we have knife ears here joining the fight! A bit of ground rules before we start. No biting, no punching, kicks, or scratching. You need to wrestle your opponent in the mud for at least ten seconds! What’s your name, strig?”
“Call me, The Shield.”
“Well, folks! Welcome… The Shield! Give red eyes here a round of applause!”
Louis hopped into the mud ring and started wrestling it out with a large burly human in just his shorts. Emma grinned and leaned in watching the fight. “Fuck him up, Mud King!”
“What?! Shouldn’t you be cheering for me?!” her brother hissed.
“Fuck no! I hope you swallow some mud, dumbass!”
Phineas, Zach, and Charles watched from the bar seats. Zach and Charles were cheering and screaming, placing bets on… Mud King. Phineas on the other hand was observing in silence with a glass of scotch in his hands, legs crossed, and taking a sip from time to time. A small smile formed for about half a second, betraying his amusement.
“Mark, how come they’re so calm with duskwalkers around? This isn’t New Lundun,” Olivia asked.
“Well, this is the red light district. Here, anything goes. There’s a small duskwalker community that lives here too. Probably a dozen or so. I’m just usually here for the mud fights.”
“Usually?” His strigoi partner raised a brow.
“Don’t worry, nothing suspicious. The other times are just watching poker games and seeing folks lose all their money.”
“Huh, you really were a rebel when you were younger.”
“I was in my angst years. Wanted to escape from my mom deciding everything for me, so I went around here secretly.”
“Well, it looks like there’s still a lot I don’t know about you. You are a really cute mystery, Mark Jacobs,” she grinned, kissing him on the cheek. The group went on, having fun throughout the night. Zach and Charles even joined in on the mud fights, while Phineas, being the responsible one, was keeping a close eye to make sure nobody got too hurt. After some time, the couple decided to walk outside of the building, taking a stroll around the area. They talked for a while, telling each other stories from their childhood.
“—then my mom would get mad cuz I dragged my dirty shoes across the carpet,” Mark chuckled, shaking his head.
"I would be very mad too. Oh, Sol, you can be pretty dumb sometimes.”
“Hah, yeah.”
“Only sometimes, though.”
The captain chuckled and leaned in, pressing hips on hers. Olivia kissed back, enjoying the small moment the two had. Then, all of a sudden, she pulled away, tilting her head to the side. Mark looked at her in surprise. “What’s wrong, Liv?” he asked. Her ears twitched, pausing for a second.
“Do you hear that?” she asked, turning towards the sky in the distance. “Listen. I feel like something’s wrong.”
Mark tried to listen. There was a very faint buzzing sound in the distance. It slowly started getting louder, as if it were coming straight for them. His eyes went wide, his feet moving on their own. He grabbed Olivia and began running back to the building where they left the rest of their team, pushing his legs as fast as they could carry him. The sounds were a lot louder now, erasing all doubt as to what they were.
“M-Mark those are—!”
“I know! Aquillas, and I don’t think they’re ours!” he said.
“Get on me! I’m faster!” Olivia offered. He nodded, hopping on her back and wrapping his arms over her shoulders. “I don’t think we can outrun aquillas, Liv!” he gritted his teeth as look back behind them. The aquillas were flying overhead. They looked different from the ones Anglestan had, and they sported the Crescent’s colors. Flashbacks of the raid on New Lundun raced through his mind.
This can’t be happening again. Where’s the military?! Wouldn’t they have noticed this attack coming?
The flying machines’ lower compartments opened. They weren’t regular attack aquillas, they were bombers. The Crescent had learned from their last attack that slow-moving skyships weren’t the best way to lay waste to a city. Several explosive canisters were dropped as they cut through the city’s skyline, which soon hit the ground. The familiar deafening booms of New Lundun were once again heard, right in his hometown.
“Olivia—!”
A bomb exploded right beside the two, sending them flying. They crashed into the wall of a building. Olivia got up quickly looking around. “Mark?”
She saw the young captain slumped over on the floor slightly bleeding from a wound on the side of his head. “Mark!” She crawled over to him, trying to shake him. “Mark! Wake up! No no no no. Fuck! No! You can’t leave me like this! Mark, get up!”
The air raids continued, laying waste to the city before moving on to their main target.
The neighboring city of Mancheston.

2024.04.05 23:54 Personal-Listen-4941 What’s a Proper British Starter?

Whenever people talk about classic British dishes, entrees & desserts gets mentioned but never appetisers.
Entrees - Toad in The Hole, Shepherds Pie, Fish & Chips, etc.
Desserts - Eton Mess, Jam Roly Poly, Treacle Tart, etc.
Nothing springs to mind when thinking of starters that are quintessentially British. All the popular ones are imports of a foreign cuisine, usually Italian. The best we could come up with in a discussion was stuff like Scotch Eggs & Sausage Rolls which seem more snack food than appetiser.
Are there any British starters that spring to mind for you?
