A sub reddit created for the purpose of pairing writers with dedicated artists. Submittes short stories or other applicable fiction will be illustrated by all manner of interested and willing artists: pencil, digital, paint, etc., to produce awesome work or art. Merging two talents to create something truly unique. Comics. Concept drawings. Covers. Or whatever the f#&k else is desired. I hope to create a community if interest exists. If not, at least we tried.

No, someone in the Lower Decks writers room wants to be part of those beloved TNG, Voyager and DS9 stories, and so, in this latest batch of what Beckett Mariner would call “eps”, this animated non-entity got busy sequelising.
There were weak comic follow-ups to Voyager’s “Tuvix” (the premise being the joke, this was like Scary Movie following Scream), a DS9 follow-up featuring Rom and Leeta, and an egregious and silly sequel to TNG’s “The First Duty” and, in an act of furious masturbation, “Lower Decks”, in which Nicolas Locarno’s story was picked up with all the care and attention of a late-transformed Seth Brundle trying to groom his pet gibbon.
Locarno’s story had, effectively, been told – he became Tom Paris due to the idiotic notion that Locarno couldn’t be redeemed (why not, you might ask?) – and his redemption arc played out in the Delta Quadrant over seven years. But the decision of Voyager’s producers not to literally pick up the character, had the unforeseen and terrible consequence that he was still an exploitable TNG reference, and so we get the Lower Decks version, in which the character has curiously morphed into a megalomaniac, incited mutinies on a dozen ships, and formed a fleet of mavericks who’ve requisitioned a Genesis device (because apparently they’re been mass produced by 2380) for leverage over the Federation.
This ends in a re—run of Wrath of Khan’s nebula battle, and Locarno becoming part of a new planet which is named in his dishonour. I’ll bet you 5000 bars of latinum that you didn’t envision that end for the character when you last saw him in 1992.

But this is a show that’s fast realising it’s the only TNG-era show in town, so has cart blanche to keep raiding the archive to sate its own, self-eating, franchise-weakening tendency. Season 5 is in production, and fuck only knows what horrors this writers’ room of clueless geeks have in store in the episodes bought and paid for. Tom Riker living on a planet with a cloned Deanna Troi? An aged but very much alive Tasha Yar, enjoying the good life on Romulus until a liberated Armus holidays there? Reginald Barclay’s drumhead trial for sex crimes?
Don’t imagine it can’t happen. Lower Decks has a taste for it now. Fans who can tell the difference between pastiche and the real thing will hope and pray that Star Trek: Legacy or something like it gets the green light. Not because Cobra Kai in space is a good idea either, but if the world of ‘90’s Trek is going to continue, let it at least be with some pretensions to dramatic integrity. If not, it’s clear who and what will step in to fill the void.
The show’s one good move this year was Vulcan T’Lyn becoming a regular. The only character who could plausibly transfer to live action Trek, her deadpan undercutting of the hysteria around her has been a tonic and perhaps an acknowledgment that the mania, unchecked, was exhausting for the audience as well as mirthless."

What is not welcomed nor encouraged: Making people feel unwelcomed, whether through unneeded negative comments or downvoting, copying others work and trying to pass it off as your own, or trying to bring in unnecessary fandom feuds/wanks. Please keep any and all negativity off this thread, and continue making it a welcoming place for sharing stories, writing and ideas. This is a place to share our works and encourage creativity in the community.

2024.06.01 14:09 PocketPillow Just finished my first ever playthrough of Fallout 4. My thoughts.
I'll be honest, I'm that guy that picked it up for $20 because of the TV show. I know the game came out ages ago but when it came out my kids were young and my video game time was nil.
I wanted to share my thoughts, if anyone cares. Maybe no one does, but I'm guessing everyone here has played through a bunch of times, has a bunch of mods downloaded, etc. so maybe you will.
1) Dogmeat is annoying, I made Codsworth my follower out of frustration.
Literally shot that dog dozens of times since he would jump between my gun and the enemy trying to be helpful. Then had to stimpack him out of guilt.
2) The Sad Couple and Minuteman Mission Giver made me avoid Sanctuary.
I know it's supposed to be home, but I actually made my home the Drive in Theater instead where I didn't have to listen to the could complain or risk being given another Minuteman mission that I didn't want. I made a really cool base (at least I loved it). Building was tricky, but I basically made tiers of society up to the top of the screen. Wasted a ton of time but had a lot of fun.
I wished I could have reserved the top bed for myself, but I basically had the King's Quarters on the highest level, my citizens the next level down, shops below that, then my workshops, and surrounded on the bottom level with turrets.
And then... My citizens kept getting trapped under the ramshackle palace, which was annoying. But otherwise building was fun.
3) I loved exploring the world overall.
The little sidequest stories found on various terminals were really cool. Especially the vault ones, but also finding little email arguments and whatnot. I always read what they said. Getting the special power armor chest from that lab was also cool, they should have had more stumble upon things like that.
4) I found all 3 factions distasteful, but went with the Institute as my choice.
The Institute was the least bad option, and it had my family loyalty. I also loved the backstory of how it was founded by survivors living in tunnels and that they created a paradise, and were still expanding underground.
I didn't like how the story tried to drive me into the arms of the railroad. Sorry not sorry: AI isn't people. Building a machine for a purpose and using it isn't "slavery."
Meanwhile the Brotherhood wanting to destroy everything and rule through military might just drives the world into further dystopia.
Did I agree with everything the Institute was doing? No. Replacing people with Synths and experimenting on people is obviously bad, and is too "Vault" type thinking, but it felt like the game wanted me to find out the evil part of the seemingly perfect society in order to push me into the arms of the railroad but didn't make the evil part all that shocking.
Sorry not sorry, but attempting to murder and destroy people over "enslaving" technology that they make themselves wasn't my cup of tea. So the Institute was the least bad of 3 immoral options. At least society isn't going to be a brutal fascist Brotherhood or run by people that want to stop using technology to improve humanity.
5) After the main quest line was over everything was meaningless.
It felt like a real lost bit of potential not to have a "part 2" to the game where you rebuild society. Fishing the main quest should have been the halfway point. I would have loved post-main quests based on your faction of choice. Like reestablishing the CIT. Cleaning it up and using the Minuteman network to recruit townships and create a functioning society.
I've glanced at mods and I don't mean "download a mod that makes this town look like it did before the fall". I mean like recruiting townsfolk to produce wall panels and machinery in one of the factories. Establishing local school houses. Using the Institute to invent some Environmental Rad Away Processors to slowly purify the lake water. That sort of thing.
Part of the hollow feeling was that the world didn't change. We destroyed the Railroad and Brotherhood, but then... It's just raiders and super mutants. No where to progress. Not even a cheesy montage with a time lapse of society improving over the course of decades and a credits scene. No closure. Just back to killing NPCs that are trying to invade Greentop again... Overall I enjoyed the game, just felt like it was unfinished.
I was only level 41 when I finished the main quest line too. Just did Minuteman quests for a while. I put off finishing it until I unlocked the final level of mods for weapons and armor, but probably would have been fine to finish it 10 levels earlier.
6) I also didn't love that I was required to unlock hacking and lockpicking to finish the game.
I was going to anyway, but the game sets up for customizing you're character and then forces you to build a certain way. I felt like I was required to have a high Charisma guy that could pick every lock and hack every terminal. If I wanted to be an ignorant brute just kicking down doors that option wasn't open to me. That master lock can't be picked? BS, I'm wearing power armor and can punch a giant monster to death, pretty sure I can rip a wooden door off it's hinges!
7) The fact that Deacon was supposed to be their idea of "cool" showed the writers grew up watching 80s movies.
It was laughable how big of a dork he actually was.

I realize when posting this that I am making assumptions and I also realize that my ability to influence an outcome is small or nonexistent but I can’t help but wonder if there is anything I can do.
I have a coworker that has confided in me in the past about some mental health issues he has encountered. He is a recovering alcoholic and has revealed to me that he has had hallucinations/delusions in the past. Followed by a period of time that he seemed to be free of them. He has also mentioned that I was the only person who believed him when he said that he had those delusions.
In the last couple of weeks he has begun to say things that make me very suspicious that he is a state of mind that is detached from reality. He has very grandiose thoughts, has made contact with a “higher power” and has received a big plan, and is very optimistic. I’m only providing this as context to my suspicion. I’m not seeking a diagnosis nor do I believe I have that capability.
My question is, is there any way for me to approach this that may lead to him seeking or getting mental health support?
He already mentioned to me that his girlfriend made the suggestion that he may be having some insert generic diagnoses here. I asked him what he thought about it and he responded “no.” He doesn’t seem open to considering the possibility.
So far, I have just been very go with the flow with anything he says. I don’t think there are many people in his life that he is comfortable with and I don’t want to compromise that by bluntly confronting him but I also want him to be able to get the support I think he needs. Is there anything I can do or do I stay out of his personal business?
Note: I did do some investigating on his “big plan” and he did reveal to me what it was. I was a little concerned because of how cryptic he was and he has a history of somewhat radical ideas. Sure, but that's no reason to justify people reacting like they are. One cannot argue 'None of it's real' while also arguing 'these characters are important to me' or 'I want to invest in this series/game' because the point of the game is for you to immerse and invest in it. You're meant to care about the characters intrinsically, and not about 'what they do for you'. It's absolutely fine to be upset if some 15 year old idiot 'consoomer' whose first thought when he becomes upset about how a female in the game looks responds with "You want my money~! I am your demographic!" makes such an ignorant, room-temperature IQ take like this, and it's fine to let them know why.
I didn't say these characters are important to me. Real people who exist are important to me. People who get emotional about other people having opinions on made up characters must have some deeper issues. This is a subreddit for discussing a video game series, it's not Doctor Phil.

It's story telling, dude.I say this with relief, but most people have not expirienced sexual abuse. Obviously, this is a good thing. However, it's pretty clear these days that empathy for people who have isn't wide-spread. The point of storytelling is broadening horizons, through different perspectives. It should not just be about catering to the audience.
Storytelling is that means of spreading empathy. There is value to the experience it has to share, and regardless of if Angela is real, the experiences she's there to portray are not without inspiration sourced in reality. If your argument is "She's not real. It's not real. Why care?" then you don't get the point of the whole of storytelling. Not just games, like, all of storytelling.But what about word choice?

You misunderstand the term “vulnerable beauty”. You’re thinking about it negatively in terms of being taken advantage of. It’s not that. Im talking about tenderness and sorrow that is enhanced by natural beauty- and vice versa.
Go on YouTube and look at all the musical performances of songs about melancholy/ vulnerability/tenderness played by legendary artists. Like “fade into you” by Mazzy Star. The top YouTube comments are full of praises on her natural beauty. We know that aesthetic beauty enhances the artistry and vice versa.
Human nature tends to gravitate toward certain types of faces. It wouldn’t be the same if she had a derpy face. There is a reason why Konami decided to use Angela’s face as the cover art for the original SH2 game. Because her vulnerable beauty is a key component of her character. ( EXAMPLE CASE ) In the collaborative construction of the Fortress, we all get to contribute little details that later become established lore for everyone to interact with. If a god comes in and simply provides a fortress that cannot be harmed by anything and solves all of our problems, the collective game we all showed up to play is now over and only one person got to contribute. If a god simply wills a civilization, fully-formed and populated, into being, they will technically qualify as members, but many would consider that to be violating the spirit of what we're doing here. Finally, if a god is so strong that the entirety of the EON Compact could never subdue them, then functionally they get to propose in-character rules that only they can get away with not following. FOR: There is also an argument to be made for allowing gods into EON. It is brief, but it is important. Turning people away is generally considered to be rude. It's not a very nice thing to do and creates a rift in the community. We are, after all, each here to pretend to be silly wizards. Or serious wizards. Or both. But the point is, as passionate as I am about EON and as much as I want it to succeed, it is still worthwhile to take a step back, consider everyone's feelings, and acknowledge that this sub is supposed to be a fun and inclusive wizard zone. So, do we allow gods to be participating members of EON? I'm proposing two options for the god dilemma.

Just a bit of contect he was never involved in my pregnancy since we broke up when I was 10 weeks pregnant I let him know when we was born and he message me when can I see her.
I arrange for him to see her when she was 5 days old he didnt seem that interested in her at all he never looked at her he held her one during the few hours he saw her. He came again when she was about 2 weeks old and that when the problems started.
He constantly picked fights saying I wasn't allowing him to see her and I was a horrible mother that she's not his as she looks nothing like him etc.
When she was 3 weeks old he tried to end it twice it go that bad the police had to drag him back to the hospital, I said thats since his mental health isnt the best that's its not the best idea for him to be seeing her and we can arrange somthing for when his mental health was better I still messaged him sent in photos and we still ft when he could.
2 weeks later I got a letter though for mediation I message him and he said that his mental health was better and that even if he and said anything I would allow him to see her ( which I never did the planning wasn't the best as when he was buzy I was free amd when I was buzy he was free so him seeing her was difficult to arrange) after I decline he stopped messaging me
8 months later I put in for child support he got his sister to message me to tell me I'm a horrible person for putting in for CS when I don't allow him to see her (i never said he couldnt see her) so I message him to see if he wanted to see her and I would arrange somthing so that he wasn't on his own with her so like at a visitation centre.
We went back and forth for a few days then I asked him it not message me everyday (as all it was is him asking is she was OK and constantly comparing her to his family but when i said oh she gets that from my side of the family he would accuse me of pushing him and his family out and that im trying to turn her against him she was 9 months old at the time) he flipped out on me.
Saying how can I help and support my child if you don't allow me to message. I put back I'm not saying not message just not every day and I might be the arsehole for this but I said that asking how she is amd comparing her to your family isn't helping or supporting her.

Wanted to get some opinions on a certain aspect of DMing. I had made another post about a friend giving me a bit of a hard time, we've been playing D&D occasionally with myself DMing. Most of my friends have been cool about it, very patient and cooperative, but just the one I suppose complaining in a sense. But this post isn't so much about that, so I'm not gonna go on about it too much.
In brief one of his issues is 'looking through the book during the game'. Now I would say this is a valid point, but he conveyed it in a way I didn't appreciate. First time we played I would even say myself that I was pausing too much to check things in the book. However this was my first time DMing, prep was minimal and I made this clear to everyone, but only 'he' had a problem with it, nothing was said at the time but I could sense the energy.
Fast forward to recent games, I would give myself a pat on the back and think that I've been doing quite well to minimize pauses to check rules etc as much as possible. In a recent game I was running a module, at one point I got confused when reading the map and asked my friends to please bear with me for a few minutes. I was at first struggling to determine which dungeon I was looking at, was the reason. His 'solution' is 'just make it up blah blah'. I know the importance of improvising, and have been trying my best to do so. But I don't like the idea of ignoring the content of the module, which is what was be implied. I don't think he's quite appreciated that I'm not a pro DM, voice actor or improviser.
My question to you all, considering I have limited experience DMing or playing D&D in general. Is that, is it acceptable in your experience for the DM or perhaps even players for that matter, to from time to time, need a few minutes to check something in a book? I also want the game to flow as much as possible, but in my view it should be OK for me the DM to need a few mins here and there to figure something out, I don't like the 'just make it up' notion as IMO things could end up in a mess and there will be a possibility of inconsistencies. I'll also add that I have been winging it a little with some rules and mechanics for the sake of keeping the game going, but I don't believe it's appropriate to do this at every second of the way.

Long triggering post ahead. Also religious trauma, domestic abuse...maybe?
I'm nearing 38, and I'm just realizing that the man I married when I was 30 is rather abusive. I just need to share this. I need to write it out. I need to confirm that I'm not crazy. Or if I am, please correct me.
My dad is a pastor in a conservative Christian cult. Not only is the cult abusive, my dad was/is abusive. My mom was both a receiver and a perpetrator of abuse. Mostly emotionally and mentally. There was, of course, corporal punishment which I consider abuse. My brothers got beat a lot. Often by my mom. But they preferred to abuse me emotionally and mentally because I really can handle pain, it's my brain that is weak.
My dad will get mad about something and just take over the whole house screaming and throwing a fit. He would threaten us and just go absolutely bizerk. It could be because of something else he was mad at, or because we ate all his ice cream or some other food that he wanted but didn't say he was saving for something. He would make weird rules or decide we couldn't do something like see a parade because "the gays had taken it over." (Not pride, just this local parade). We never knew when he would be cool and when he would be volatile. My mom was similar, but she'd scream at us when we asked for help with school (homeschool) or go on about how nobody ever helped her...I did.
It's always kind of confused me because my dad and mom would point out other people both in and out of the cult and say that they were so abusive or cruel to their kids. They were correct about these people. But the implication was always that my parents were good somehow. I fell for it for a long time.
In college they diagnosed me with bipolar II. About 3 or 4 years ago, I found out that not only were they wrong, they didn't even follow proper clinical procedures for diagnosing such a thing. About 3ish years ago, I was diagnosed with PTSD.
When I met my husband he was cool. He was the first boyfriend I had that wasn't mean or degrading. He brought me coffee just because or soup when I was sick. It was fun and cool. I felt like a real person for the first time ever.
But, he would get upset about something at work and he'd threaten other people. Like one time when we were dating, he was mad about how work went and then started about how he wanted to beat up this random bicyclist who was driving by. When I reacted, he just said he was kidding and acted like I was overreacting. My dad did that a lot too. Said something horrible and then screamed at me for not being able to take a joke.
He does this all the time. He gets in these rants about whatever he's mad about. It's rarely something I did and the anger is rarely directed at me exactly. But he takes over the whole house. And one time he was in the kitchen, and he had a knife, and he was stabbing the air repeatedly while yelling about how he wanted to hurt his managers.
Then, I have to soothe him, and calm him down. And it's the poor him show.
He's also gotten violent with my small dog. Usually just scary and threatening, but sometimes violent. My dog used to love him, now he's scared of him.
At first I thought I was just being sensitive. And when he gets drunk, or starts acting like this and I get upset it's all, "it's because of how you were raised. You're upset by the fact that I'm snarling and muttering to myself because of your hupervigilance."
And he also will condem abusers. As if he's not one.
I think it is abuse? Am I just over sensitive. My parents would say I've never been abused.
Anyway, I'm leaving in a week. I'm going to teach in a different country than my husband is. The plan is to work separately for the school year and then after a year reevaluate. He kind of pushed me into this. And I didn't want to be separate at first. But now I don't think I will want him back.
I've not even told my mom about the issues, just that we would be teaching in different countries. She already had that disapproving look. Like she knows I'm a sinful, worthless wife. And that's one thing I've told myself to stamp down my unhappiness. I don't even believe that stuff anymore. I know what they will say when (and possibly if) I divorce my husband.
Anyway, is this abuse? Am I just some entitled woman who is too selfish to allow other to express themselves? That's what my husband says, that he has to walk on eggshells and that I'm not letting him feel anger. Or he oscillates from "poor me, men are only allowed to feel anger and now that's all I can express" to "why are you oppressing me".
I don't even know where I'm going with this. I guess an outside perspective from other C-ptsd friends would be nice.
Edit: I'm just pissed at myself for marrying my dad in sheep's clothes. Or maybe I am just a bitch.

since the middle of the last decade, they imposed us a stupud censorship of words we write in the comments. We just waste our time to find out the right words to write because otherwise the comments will be erased without a warning. we can't reply back more appropriately to the ones who belittle and harass us. some scathing words would calm them down. but now they are free to make fun of us and we can't reply them more offensively. honestly one of the worst things on YT. who is the responsible for this? why they didn't receive yet any threats from someone who make them understand that censoring any negative word is a stupid change? who is the one who told himself "ho yeah it would be a good idea to put a system of forbidden words for the video makers , just to piss off everyone"? if they wanted to censor the comments , why they don't simply forbids direct insults? why they have to go so far including censoring the single negative word? why we can't exactly know more directly which words are censored in which video comments? why there is still no revolution against this , with people bringing axes, forks and torches in the Google place? i don't understand why i am the only one who would have preferred a better change for the comments since all of these years. damn, i really miss the old Youtube.

My dad is a retired business man (he got sick so his ability to hold his company vanished) I’m a first year business student, initially getting into entrepreneurship but I’m thinking of changing my major to something more specific.
I have an eye disability that’s super visible, and living in a third war country with a shit economy makes it hard for me to find a job, maybe after my surgery I can work as a waitress. Meanwhile, I’m interested in learning logistics, finding a product and selling it. I used to have a jewelry business online but I got bored of it since it was a hobby more than a career.
My dad wants to help me write a business plan and execute it if it’s good. I’m obviously at the first steps but I have no idea if this is a good idea, my dad is schizophrenic but a very experienced man in this field. Is import export a good field for me to enter? I will have to start super small.
Is it a good idea to have a job and research this import export thing until I get the full picture and take the risk?
How do you find passion to go head first into a project regardless how shitty my mindset and situation might be?

I have two snakes that hang around my backyard that I really love. They’ve been around for some time and seem to come back by the season, so they must enjoy it.
However, they want to spend time in my firepit or a spot that was once overgrown but now there is nothing there.
The problem is that I want them to feel safe and be around, but I do mow the lawn and eventually use the fire pit. Does anyone have cool creative ideas on how to give them a continued habitat that is safe for them?
My backyard is pretty barren currently - slowly we’re landscaping it. It’s just a fire pit and 3 raised garden beds with vegetables - but those aren’t really protective at these stages and 1 foot tall so harder for them to get into.

I just have to gush about her for a hot minute because she is just so unbelievably fantastic. She is the kindest, most understanding and patient person I have ever met. She meets sadness with comfort, frustration with understanding and concerns with support. She has consistently supported me through everything I have struggled with, and is such an empathetic and understanding person it's incredible. She maintains her own boundaries and prioritises respecting others boundaries too, and she has passion for helping others. She is so creative, she's made me some absolutely beautiful handmade gifts and written me letters I've cried with happiness reading. She instantly took an interest in researching butch history / identity when we got together (completely unprompted) and I feel so cared for and understood. We so easily split even mundane and boring tasks and planning between us because we're both so excited about spending time with one anothemaking eachother happy. She is an incredible woman and I have been so lucky to call her mine. We've been together 1.5 years, known eachother for almost 3, and I just can't even put into words how amazing this girl is and how much I love supporting and loving and caring for her. People share many different kinds of experiences on this sub, so I thought I'd add some positivity into the mix because love is cool af and gives alot of hope :)

Got a HNC in audio engineering, went to Dubai and got a 48k a year job in management (through nepo). Left that now after only two months due to extreme toxicity. Going back to England, and I've applied to around 100 jobs.
I'm particularly interested in degree apprenticeships ( In literally ANYTHING) but cannot seem to land one. Ideally, as I'm a musician and done a bunch of freelance work in recording studios, live sound etc I would like to work in post production/ sound, but it is just so competitive!
Been emailing so many different companies, applying to so many jobs in this industry and cannot land a single one. I'm too qualified for entry level sound jobs/ apprenticeships and not experienced enough for the fully fledged audio engineer roles it seems. I'm just sat here in the middle, waiting. I have some management experience which may serve as a hindrance to my CV rather than a benefit as I've not had any luck recently in getting a job.
I'm really sick of manually filling out long application forms and writing tailored cover letter's. Feel an intense burnout coming on. Despite this I am applying to around 3-4 jobs a day. I've become accustomed to receiving the rejection e-mail for job applications now. Yet I keep applying. It's almost like a form of self harm.
People who've been in a similar position. What should my next steps be? Are there any decent paying roles (late 20k - mid 30k) that I should be looking at?
