2024.05.30 06:14 Asuhhbruh My Top 12 List of Military Free & Military Discounts, after 5+ years of field research.

I am nearing my ETS and it has taken me 6 years to create the list below of free stuff & heavily discounted stuff for you, young joe who has just graduated from AIT, and of course you, old joe who has just graduated from knee pain to back pain... and all the joes in between. Enjoy :) Comment if you find something new or save a bunch of money, so I can feel like I didn't just waste an hour of my life!
EDIT: The community has reminded me of a few that I forgot about and a few that are totally new to me. The ones I have experience with I have added, ones that I cannot personally vouch for yet are added in a new section "COMMUNITY SUBMISSIONS".
\This post is mostly for AMERICAN SOLDIERS. Canadian soldiers can read on, but for my Australians, New Zealanders, and British soldiers... there is very little, perhaps nothing here for you. Definately skip the free section, but I think you may get lucky with* 1,2,3, and 6 on the discount section.

FREE:

A variety of free stuff your service has afforded you. Military got theirs, so get yours where you can.
  1. FREE FOOD Veterans Day Food Free and Discount List : Although this link is for 2023, this website puts out a very comprehensive list every year of FREE and discounted food you can get by showing your military ID at certain restaurants. I use it every year to plan a route and hit multiple spots so I can chow down myself and then bring back some dinner to my family!
  2. FREE MUSEUM Blue Star Museums : Here you can find a map and a list of all of the museums nationwide that will let you in for FREE! The vast majority of them also allow you to bring 5 guests with you, so family and friends can join you. I treated my whole family to a visit at the MOMA in NYC to checkout Van Gough's Starry Night and other world famous paintings.
  3. FREE TAX FILING H&R Block Tax Filing : This is just one of the many things you can find on MilitaryOneSource, but I personally think it is the best. The service walks you through everything you need to do in a very easy to understand way, autofills lots of your information, and allows you to call a real certified tax consultant that is trained up on your unique military/reserve tax situation.
  4. FREE TSA Pre-Check : Stop taking your shoes off at the airport! When you buy your plane tickets, simply list your DOD ID number where it asks for you KTN (Known Traveler Number) and use your CAC instead of your passport/drivers license when going through security.
  5. FREE NATIONAL PARKS National Parks Military Pass : Go to any NPS station and they will print you off a Military Pass for free. If you cant do that, or you want it to show your name, use this link and pay the $10 for shipping. You can get into any national park for FREE, and if you hang the card up in your car, everyone you can fit in your car are also in for free.
  6. FREE ONLINE CERTIFICATIONS Coursera : Coursera is an online platform for lessons, training, and certifications from companies and universities on a wide variety of topics. If you go through VTS, you will be able to get access to all courses for FREE instead of paying $20-$60 a month (varies by course and amount of courses and your plan and all that).
  7. FREE-ISH AMERICAN EXPRESS PLATINUM CARD: If you are currently on active duty orders, Amex will waive the ~$650 annual fee for this credit card which, amongst many other things, gives you $20 a month for subscriptions, $15 a month for Uber rides/eats, and access to all luxury airport lounges. You also accrue lots of miles/points that can be doubled or tripled if you convert them to a different rewards program (ex. transfer 100 amex points into 200 delta miles). I was on active duty orders AND I got a referral for the card so I got a ton of extra points on top of no annual fee. I dont know if it is policy, pandemic, or just luck but I was not charged the annual fee for 3 whole years!... Until this past year when they dinged me with the annual fee unexpectedly. I think it is worth getting this card ONLY so long as you are not charged the annual fee! Cancel as soon as that happens or as soon as you anticipate it to truly make this a freebie.
  8. FREE BAGS ON FLIGHTS: Google "<insert your airline here> military bags" many many airlines offer free carry ons and even checked bags to military and vets, yes, even for personal travel and non giant green duffel bags.

DISCOUNT:

The majority of this list are websites that offer exclusive, steep discounts once you sign up and prove you are eligible. I have tried to provide some broad categories for your convenience.
  1. DISCOUNT SKI & BOARD SEASON PASS Epic Pass For Military : Quite possibly the steepest military discount after FREE in existence. Its about $160 instead of $600-$900+ for a ski season pass.
  2. DISCOUNT HUNTING & FISHING / CAMPING GEAR GuideFitter : 10%-65% Discounts on Outdoors gear and Hunting/Fishing Trips and Excursions. This website is definately more specifically catering to tactical high performance gear specifically for hunting and fishing, but there is also other outdoor and sporting goods things too. If you are getting value out of this post and want to sign up for guidefitter, consider using my referral code. If you do, I will get an entry into a raffle for some free gear. My code: "vG8H3FYz"
  3. DISCOUNT OUTDOOR GEAR & SPORTING GOODS ExpertVoice : 10%-65% Discounts on Outdoors gear and other categories like fitness and sports. I used it to get 35% off a Biolite camping stove, for example. This link will take you to my referral. If you are getting value out of this post, you can thank me by signing up through my link. Otherwise, just google "expertvoice" to check it out for yourself.
  4. DISCOUNT ON A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING GOVX : 10%-65% Discounts on a wide variety of things, hard to clearly categorize. Lots of outdoor gear, apparel, vacation packages, event tickets, concert tickets, sporting goods, nutritional supplements, and more!
  5. DISCOUNT VACATIONS & EVENTS USAA Perks : 10%-65% Discounts on a wide variety of things, but mostly vacation packages, event tickets, and concert tickets. \* You must have a credit card or other account open with USAA to use this one. **** You should have something, anything open with USAA.*
  6. DISCOUNT ON A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING + PRIVACY BONUS ID.ME : 10%-65% Discounts on a wide variety of things, hard to clearly categorize. Unlike some of the other discount sites mentioned in this list, this one caters to a wider array of folks beyond military and outdoor brand employees, to include nurses, teachers, fire fighters, law enforcement, etc... As such the deals are more general in terms of shopping categories. idMe is also excellent to use because once you verify your military service with them, they have been hired buy many public and private organizations to verify people. This way you can significantly minimize the number of times you need to upload your DD214 or LES and risk breaching your private data across multiple websites. Just do it once with idMe!
  7. DISCOUNT GOVERNMENT RATES ON HOTEL ROOMS : Almost all hotels will give you their lowest possible rate if you can prove your government/military affiliation. There are some websites out there, but I think the safest and most secure thing to do is simply call them directly via phone and see what they can do for you.

COMMUNITY SUBMISSIONS:

I found these in the comments. Thank you for your contributions to the list. Special thanks to u/GoredScientist for provided 2 entire other lists in a very clean note format, 1 of which was made by another user they mentioned, u/Need_Food . It will take me awhile to go through all those.

Thats all folks!

2024.02.18 22:21 Right-Yam-6398 RIOT GAMES ARE RIGGED

Riot games is a scam and predatory company that create bad and rigged games and cognitively enslave their player bases using propaganda, deny, misinformation and astroturfing.

Riot games make appears their games like they are fair and competitive sport when they are not. They are rigged at every level of design to manipulate players decisions, behavior and emotions to make them addict and chase indefinitely an artificial rank. In addition they are also manipulated to maximize their spending via skins, smurf accounts, boost and scripts that are sold by riot themselves.
Riot games are business and not sport like riot want you to believe.
Every year they promise to improve the quality of the game but obviously the game gets worse every season because they go further and further in abusing the players for their own personal gain.
Astroturfing is an unfair practice of propaganda and manipulation used in the media and particularly on the internet, consisting of giving the impression of a mass phenomenon which emerges spontaneously when in reality, it was created from scratch to influence the public opinion.
Riot uses troll farms on social networks to gaslight and manipulate players into more playing.

Ranks, matchmaking & character mechanics are rigged.

Professional players and streamers are shown as untouchable gods but are, in fact, riot boosted and put in confortable lobbies to show how much fun the game is most of the time and to show a seemingly acquirable sense of control about the game. While the average user experience will be nothing close to these lobbies not necessarily because of a lack of skill. Riot purposely boost or curbs players performance by modifying in game mechanics in real time and by rigging matchmaking, to manipulate players dopamine neurotransmission to keep them addicted. (Riot heavily uses EOMM). Riot goal is to keep people playing as long as possible because if they quit the game, they can no longer consume. Riot therefore artificially control everyone's engagement via matchmaking and progression by rigging games. They induce and measure each player's individual play style, gameplay patterns and skill to create games with the desired outcome to maximize engagement and spending. This is why you can find players of all skill levels at all ranks, as the system escalates/blocks them to keep them engaged, and it can easily create unfair matches to control everyone's progress and engagement. For the vast majority of players, riot artificially block their progression because if they reach their rank goal they will most likely leave the game permanently. Players aren't playing the game by the same rules, and rules can change on the fly : for some players the game doesn't allow spells combos at the same speed as for other players, or even the interactions between spells and champions are changed from game to game, in order to benefit a player /a team compared to the others. Or even depending on the games, riot adds more or less delay on your inputs and your characters will sometimes not execute your inputs, or very slowly/off timing or enhance/decrease skill shot precision, avoid certain spells on their own or, conversely, correct their trajectory despite the inputs in order to get hit by the spell. These might appears like little bugs because riot feigns incompetence (spaghetti code myth) but these are actually purposefully designed. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Wheareas their matchmaking is so powerful that it could always make the fairest 45minutes games you could ever play, instead riot matchmaking purposely create unfair games by building teams with big mmr difference, playstyle, counter playstyle and autofill. In addition it purposely creates compatible/incompatible teams based on same criterias. It can put players in a scripter queue to push people to buy scripts. Now by artificially and unfairly stucking players and by intentionally creating poor quality matches, they have created a huge demand for smurf accounts, boost and scripts that they will create themselves, it's easy for them, and then resell them. That is their free to play business model.
Near misses : after being stuck for a while at the 4th division you will suddenly experience good teamates with good cohesion for several dozen of games and get a sudden climb from 4th division into the 1st division. Then the matchmaking will flip and you'll get back to the 4th division. In gambling : "Near-miss events, where unsuccessful outcomes are proximal to the jackpot, increase the desire to play."

High ranks are totally artificials for pros and streamers alike and to make it look like a very skillful game while above a certain threshold it's entirely a game of chance (far below the supposedly "high elo").

Riot games are designed like casino, past a low skill treshold, they do not naturally disciminate beetween player skills, but riot has created an artificial ranking system to make it look like a very skillfull game and to hook players using a rigged EOMM progression. The "high elo" is the advertisement of the game. Pros and streamers are the showcase of the game to show that "high elo" exists, that it is possible to achieve it and that the game has a high skill cap. There is a study (Win or lose: Rigged card game sheds light on inequality, fairness) that shows that even though all players know the game is rigged, winners attribute their victory to their talent and losers attribute their lost to the rules. This is why pros and streamers naively turn a blind eye to how the game works.
- Riot created ideas like low elo, to lower 99.9% of their players self esteem and to make them chase indefinitely a rank to not be low anymore (get good). - Riot started rumors of "high MMR account" to encourage purchase of smurfs. - Riot comunicate about Dunning Kruger effect so people that question matchmaking fairness are now mocked as incompetent. - Toxicity, while league of legends community is seen as the worst community in gaming, riot keep denying their responsibility and blame the players instead. While it's their rigged and unfair games that bring this level of toxicity much higher than in any other competitive games. - No transparency over matchmaking, mmr and pro scene. They could chose to make a transparent simple and non abusable matchmaking and rank system, like in any sport where everybody know the rules, instead they prefer to hide and control everything. - Scripts are riot made because they use server-side data to know the trajectory of spells, even when cast without vision or in fog of war. So riot are accomplices. - Matchmaking and ranks is a mystical religion that is interpreted differently by rioters themselves, show that it is a well hidden secret even for rioters themselves. - Spaghetti code, riot feigns incompetence : supposedly their games are spaghetti coded so you won't imagine how much computation is behind the scene. - The game was never close to be balanced, and will never be because it is only made to make players hooked and it is far easier to control games outcome by knowing how match up will interact with great certainty. - Riot forces the meta to be a specific way (unnatural and unbalanced btw, with fake data site owned by riot + boosted and paid pro/influencers) to force players to have particular gameplay profile (ex: assassin, soldier, tank, mage,...) to best adapt to the EOMM method (see player profiling + EOMM).

2024.02.08 15:10 majora2007 v0.7.14 - iOS Webtoon Fixes, Built-in Email, and a new Wiki!

A small on the surface, large under the hood release for everyone. This release first off fixes the webtoon reader for our iOS users. Many have validated and want to thank the community for helping me test and @thundernerd for doing some basic POC to help me drive it home. In addition to this, Want to Read had a critical bug in the architecture (that somehow slipped noticed for over a year now) where if one user adds a series to want to read, then another does, it will override the other. And lastly, for Kavita+ users, this is foundational release for the upcoming Basic Metadata feature. All data, like reviews, recommendations, and ratings are now stored in your DB. This leads to very quick response times and sets up the system for future data synchronization.
Another big feature in this release is KavitaEmail is no longer required for those that want to use email (and me hosting an email service for everyone is no more). All email settings are built into the application and this has allowed me to streamline how Kavita works around email. Before, it was a mess of having to call an external system, check if the system was accessible externally, etc. Now, you MUST setup a host name (reverse proxy domain) and the email settings to use any email functionality. Due to this, all the flows got polished and should be much more consistent for users.
Lastly, while it looks so small, it was over 3K lines of code, but volume numbers are now float-based, meaning if a volume is < 1, it will now properly show on book library series detail page. In addition to this, Omnibus (Volume 1-2) is now much better supported and Kavita+ will get Volume 2 when you read an Omnibus vs Volume 1 previously.
That wraps the v0.7.x series of releases. Next release series (v0.8.x) will be focusing mainly on the new Magazine library type, PDF parsing enhancements, and likely the new comic library.

New Wiki

Lastly I want to call out a massive thanks to @DieselTech who has been leading a redesign of our wiki. Safe to say, at least 100 hours have been poured into re-organizing and updating a ton of the content from our old wiki into a brand new system. It looks slick and should be much easier to understand and search against. While we aren't yet ready to roll out, be on the look out next release for the full release. For those that want a sneak peak, you can check it out here.

Old Email Service

As mentioned, this release contains built-in email functionality. The old emailer will remain on for 1 week after this release to give time for people to update. If you are stuck on an old version, please reach out so we can help understand why and get you updated.

Kavita+

Kavita+ is designed to work with the latest - 2 releases. If you are further than that out of date, it may no longer work appropriately. It is important to stay up to date.
Make sure you know that the docker repo has CHANGED. New repo here: https://hub.docker.com/jvmilazz0/kavita - You just need to switch your image to jvmilazz0/kavita:latest
If you are on 0.7.6+ you can update directly to 0.17.14 otherwise you need to update incrementally to prevent data loss (v0.5.6 > v0.7.1.4 > v0.7.3.1 > v0.7.6 > v0.7.14)
The full release can be found here.

2023.10.20 04:26 rmfranco I can't find any other ad blockers, but still get that Youtube ad blocker box.

First, I apologize for the long post. I have that Youtube ad blocker thing. I've whitelisted for both AdblockerPlus and U-block-Origin. Then I later disabled them in the extension page. I Still have that popup. Maybe someone here will know something I don't, cause when I look at my list, I can't see anything else that might block ads along with whatever they do.

What can you do to improve your conversion rates?

https://preview.redd.it/dzyrxcegbmob1.png?width=2560&format=png&auto=webp&s=c1573b0ac3dd6e76fd8f404e5d43321b4df283ea
Conversion rates are the heartbeat of any business's online presence. Whether you're selling products, services, or simply striving to engage your audience, higher conversion rates can significantly impact your bottom line. In this blog, we'll explore actionable strategies to help you improve your conversion rates and enhance the overall effectiveness of your online efforts.

1. Understand Your Audience

One of the most critical steps in improving conversion rates is understanding your target audience. Conduct thorough research to create detailed buyer personas. Understand their pain points, preferences, and behaviors. Tailor your messaging and offerings to address their specific needs.

2. Optimize Your Website

Your website serves as your digital storefront. Ensure it's user-friendly and visually appealing. Optimize page load times, make navigation intuitive, and implement responsive design for mobile users. A well-structured, fast-loading site can significantly boost conversions.

3. Compelling Content

Create high-quality, relevant, and engaging content that resonates with your audience. Content can be in the form of blog posts, videos, infographics, or product descriptions. Well-crafted content builds trust and encourages conversions.

4. Clear Call to Action (CTA)

Your CTAs should be clear, persuasive, and strategically placed. They should guide visitors on the desired action, whether it's making a purchase, signing up for a newsletter, or requesting more information. Test different CTA variations to see what resonates best with your audience.

5. A/B Testing

A/B testing involves creating two versions of a webpage or email with slight variations and comparing their performance. Test different headlines, images, colors, and CTAs to determine which elements drive higher conversions. Continually refine your approach based on data.

6. Trust Signals

Build trust with your audience by prominently displaying trust signals, such as customer reviews, testimonials, security badges, and industry certifications. Trustworthy websites are more likely to convert visitors into customers.

7. Simplify Forms

If you require visitors to fill out forms, make them as simple and straightforward as possible. Ask for essential information only. Long, complex forms can deter users from converting. Consider implementing autofill features for user convenience.

8. Offer Incentives

Provide incentives to encourage conversions. This could be in the form of discounts, free trials, downloadable resources, or exclusive access to content. Incentives can nudge hesitant visitors to take action.

9. Remarketing

Implement remarketing campaigns to re-engage users who have visited your site but didn't convert. Show them targeted ads across various platforms to remind them of your offerings and encourage them to return.

10. Monitor and Analyze

Regularly monitor your website's performance using analytics tools like Google Analytics. Analyze user behavior, conversion paths, and drop-off points. Use this data to make data-driven decisions and continuously improve your conversion rates.

11. Personalization

Implement personalization techniques to deliver tailored experiences to your audience. This includes personalized product recommendations, email content, and landing pages. Personalization can significantly impact conversion rates by addressing individual preferences.

12. Customer Support

Offer accessible and responsive customer support channels, such as live chat, email, or phone support. Providing assistance and addressing concerns promptly can instill confidence in potential customers and lead to conversions.

Conclusion

Enhancing conversion rates is a pivotal aspect of any successful digital strategy. By understanding your audience, optimizing your website, creating compelling content, and employing various tactics like A/B testing and trust-building signals, you can significantly boost your conversion rates. However, the quest for continuous improvement and adaptation remains constant in the ever-evolving digital landscape.
To master the art of conversion rate optimization and stay at the forefront of digital marketing, consider enrolling in an online digital marketing course. These courses provide structured learning experiences, hands-on practice, and expert guidance in the realm of digital marketing. By pursuing an digital marketing course , you not only gain the skills needed for effective conversion optimization but also acquire a broader knowledge base to excel in the dynamic world of digital marketing. Seize the opportunity to elevate your digital marketing prowess through an online digital marketing course and watch your conversion rates soar.

2023.09.09 00:34 wack70 Found cause for LastPass autofill not working in Chrome - multiple JS errors

Lately any time I would want to use autofill (i.e. clicking the red "..." button in usepass fields) the LastPass extension would just throw up a "Add +" prompt. I finally checked Chrome's Extension manager and saw a bunch of JS errors for the LastPass extension. I've always used Ghostery, so I turned it off and it started working again, no errors. Most of the errors originate from background.html in two js files: background.js and lpfulllib.js. Not my job to debug LastPass. I guess I'll have to turn off tracking in order to use LastPass, how secure.

2023.08.25 22:31 Right-Yam-6398 RIOT GAMES ARE RIGGED

Riot uses troll farms on social networks to gaslight and manipulate players into more playing

They induce and measure each player's individual play style, gameplay patterns and skill to create games with the desired outcome to maximize engagement and spend.

2023.05.16 07:32 yazeerr_ autocomplete='off' behavior with type='password' fields

I have a form that has a type=password field. Below is the template

Note: The entire
has added autocomplete="off"
The issue is I'm getting autocomplete suggestions when I click both the trackingNumber input and the pin input. This is because
If a site sets autocomplete="off"for a , and the form includes username and password input fields, then the browser still offers to remember this login, and if the user agrees, the browser will autofill those fields the next time the user visits the page.
the source
Now this is not a login form and I don't want my users to experience the prompts or the autofill in this form. I tried different random values for autocomplete attributes in both fields and tried random name values for the name attributes which didn't work.
Has anybody else experienced this issue and had an elegant solution for this?

P.S. I said elegant because I found a CSS attribute -webkit-text-security: 'disc' which enacts how a type=password field would display the typed values and it is not recommended in the MDN docs and doesn't support firefox.

EDIT: Finally I made a custom component containing a type=text input field that masks user input

2023.03.25 05:36 RoyBoy432 In Chrome, everything EXCEPT bookmarks syncs between PCs.

I am running Chrome on 3 PCs. I am signed in to Chrome with the same gmail account on all of them. My primary PC is a desktop using Windows 10 (OS build 19045.2788). I also have an old Windows 11 laptop (OS build 22621.1413) and a new Windows 11 laptop (OS build 22621.1413).
Two weeks ago, my Chrome bookmarks from my other PCs ceased to sync with my old laptop. Everything else—history, passwords, Youtube watch history, autofill, appearance, extensions, &c—continued to sync across all 3 PCs. Bookmarks also continued to sync between the desktop and the new laptop. Because the laptop is quite old and crappy, I didn’t think much of it.
Yesterday, bookmarks ceased syncing with my new laptop as well. As will the old laptop, everything else continued to sync. The only thing that does not sync is bookmarks. This is not acceptable, so I attempted some fixes and explorations:
  1. Turning sync off and back on did not fix the problem.
  2. Windows Update did not fix the problem.
  3. Reinstalling Chrome did not fix the problem.
  4. I have 105287 bookmarks. Therefore, after signing out and back into Chrome I figured it might take a long time for the sync to complete. I left the new laptop on overnight with sync turned out. Still the bookmarks did not sync at all.
I am seeking instruction as to what I may be able to do restore bookmark syncing functionality to my Chrome on Windows. Any advice would be very welcome!
Additional information:
  1. As I mentioned, according to the data at https://chrome.google.com/sync?hl=en-US I have 105287 bookmarks (exported to a .html file, the file size was 123 MB). Could this be the source of the problem? Would deleting some bookmarks fix the problem? When will Chrome be able to handle this number of bookmarks? If this is the problem, why did the system “break” at distinct, but similar, junctures for the old laptop and the new laptop?
  2. I observed that when I bookmarked 2 additional webpages, the number did not increase to 105289, perhaps suggesting that I have exceeded some kind of cap. In addition, deleting 2 bookmarks also did not result in the number changing to 105285. This could be because I am over the hypothetical cap by > 2 bookmarks, and I would hypothetically need to delete as least as many bookmarks as the number I am over the cap by. Alternatively, both of these observations could simply reflect that the data reported on the “Chrome data in your account” webpage are not updated in real time.
  3. If a cap were the problem though, it still does not make sense why nothing sync’d to the new laptop after I signed out and back in to Chrome. Shouldn’t the first 105287 bookmarks have sync’d and then stopped there?
  4. I am running Chrome Version 111.0.5563.111 on all 3 PCs.

2023.03.19 19:35 B3GG A peek inside the Nijika defamation industry chain

A peek inside the Nijika defamation industry chain
https://i.redd.it/5ynilnmllqoa1.jpg

https://preview.redd.it/n08sawghwxoa1.jpg?width=526&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e2e10e649b6d85dbdc56c69a43a098923854d327
I’ve held off making this post because currently the meta for posts regarding the subject known as Nijika Ichiji has been more schizophrenia related jokes, and I don’t want to disturb the culture too much. But now that the schizo bros are healthily growing I think it’s time to pollute your minds with what the Mandarin Bocchi the Rock community likes to call “虹黑產業鏈", which I’ve translated as “Nijika defamation Industry chain”.
Obviously the whole thing is an inside joke and we love Nijika, however like Moeha Fujiwara from Kaguya says:”Nijika is the type of girl that you want to see defiled” which can explain that for a time when you search for Ichiji or Nijika the common autofills are “nijika boyfriend” "nijika domestic violence" “nijika smoking” “nijika gun” etc etc, people just love “defaming” her, I guess you can call it gap moe.
Now there’s a million of these kinds of posts and jokes, so I’m just gonna mention a few. I came across a compilation post while watching a Taiwanese vtuber, and she was looking at https://forum.gamer.com.tw/Co.php?bsn=60076&sn=88967637 which detailed some of Nijika’s heinous acts. I’ll try to translate some parts in the funny ones but you’re welcome to use google translate or deepL to read the full articles. Most of them are about episode 9. This is just the tip of the iceberg, many of the people in the industry spread the propaganda in post comments and bullet comments in videos.

  1. Evil businesswomen Nijika
Due to the unfortunate financial status of Starry, Nijika devised a plan to help her beloved sister.
“I’ll start an indie band, put up a front to lower their guards, and we’ll take the money to perform for ourselves. Of course I’ll pretend to pay too, and we’ll split the rest 70/30.”
That’s why in episode 2 she offered to manage the band funds.

  1. Nijika becomes increasingly fed up with bocchi’s shenanigans:
This is a common talking point among people in this industry, and many have said that the reason Nijika literally just threw Bocchi to Kita in episode 9 is because her thought process is like “Mendokusai, fucking Bocchi’s is spazzing out again. I was trying to ignore her but since my sister mentioned it I guess we’ll have to take her out for a trip. I’ll have Kita take care of it.”
Now the reason why Nijika does this is because in the manga which is 4 koma they had bocchi and gang transported to the beach in one panel for comedic effect, so the anime just had to improvise a reason why Bocchi arrives in Kita’s arms. That’s why Nijika kinda did a slightly out of character thing when she just let Kita carry Bocchi for the whole ride.

https://preview.redd.it/qjz247glwxoa1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=135f09ed988ac23bfca92f6f43e05baf47194bc4
https://preview.redd.it/lv9r9vgmwxoa1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f01d050457f0fd6b28b30f549e8a1f96ce17b1bb

  1. Nijika using Bocchi

https://preview.redd.it/7g1xtacowxoa1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a8be9277d901942a54d5dcdde479fa4fbb76a54
In episode 9, even though Nijika knows Bocchi is extremely introverted and passive, she didn’t invite her out as a senpai/band leade friend for the whole summer vacation? No way she didn’t know that Ryo Yamada would, and she could have just asked Kita as well. Only when her beloved sister Seika mentioned it did she go with the flow and half-heartedly went to the beach with her.
Perhaps this was all part of her plan to keep Bocchi starved for affection, making her stay at home and yet giving her encouragement and being very nice to her so that Bocchi thinks Nijika is an angel, and increases her attachment and dependency to Kessoku band so that she won’t ever think about leaving the band? The real reason that Nijika is so nice to Bocchi is because of her skills and fame, and she’s just putting up a façade to fool her.

  1. What the heck is Nijika talking about
In episode 8 where Bocchi went “Guitar Hero” mode and carried the whole performance, in the afterparty when Nijika went out for a smoke, she said to Bocchi ”If only you performed like this every time.”

https://preview.redd.it/homt8i8qwxoa1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a3266db369e73355d05999077897152ca32c8b8
This is literally the third time that Bocchi performed on stage, first being episode 1, and the second being episode 5, with a stunning performance on the latter two attempts. Now in episode one we learned that working with your bandmates is vastly more important than individual performances,
https://preview.redd.it/qnv6rerrwxoa1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d43def913f142a25e7c18468d9d88735f1fad041

and since Nijika is the drummer she is the backbone of the band. Nijika was off beat for the entire time and that will definitely mess up the other's play in a significant way. However even though Nijika was the one underperforming and dragging the whole band down, she has the gall to tell Bocchi who carried the entire band to “Perform like this every time”? I think it's fair to feel a bit pissed at her if you were in Bocchi's position.

https://preview.redd.it/kkoboboswxoa1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5bce452f1dd2847b2368d2f49ed6f314425a066c

  1. Kessoku band? More like Backstabbing band
Ryo: Super rich, no way is she tight on money all the time, especially considering how her parents dote on her all the time. When people go out for drinks or whatnot, and you need to borrow some cash, almost all of the time you borrow from your closest friend. However Ryo only borrows from Bocchi. Why? Well Ryo knows that Bocchi is bad at rejecting other people and she would find it extremely difficult to muster up the courage to ask her money from her senpai back. She enjoys giving Bocchi a hard time, and when Bocchi was attacked by the birds, Ryo also accidentally let it slip that she looks down on bocchi like the birds do.
Kita: Even unprompted she keeps mentioning how she has a full schedule with her own friends that none of the other band members know about, how she’s so popular and she’s making time for the band and that this is a “special occasion”. She knows that the rest of the band prefer to stay indoors so where does she suggest to go? A fucking staircase climb up a mountain so she can enjoy watching the others sweat like a pig and suffer while she is still cute and fashionable. A beautiful flower is prettier when surrounded by ugly objects after all.
Nijika:
Think the entire trip is a bore and a hassle, irresponsibly threw Bocchi to Kita (having the stylish Kita carry the unfashionable Bocchi). After Bocchi got attacked by birds, flat out says that she wants to go home. On the way home, pretends to sleep along with Ryo so that Kita is the one that has to deal with Bocchi on the return trip again.

  1. Nijika hates Kita’s guts (and vice versa)
Nijika throws Bocchi at Kita in the start of episode nine

https://preview.redd.it/k2ilihvtwxoa1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=08ecfbda0b194369541db37bd8083f77cd8f0594

Kita not willing to get inside the group selfie when the came up the elevator (she'd be next to Nijika)

https://preview.redd.it/hnbis6jwwxoa1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=354f49916b7ee0a5df6597e0bf7390be273a9ea0

After Kita suggest the band to focus on the scenery when Ryo was talking about the tower of Babylon, Nijika flat out interrupts her and says basically “Aight Kita’s happy, lets get off this place”

https://preview.redd.it/5o572omxwxoa1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f65d26c539f11fb18f9af444492c06f810212deb

When they were eating ice-cream and Kita was taking a selfie, she didn’t invite Nijika and just took one herself, which is very odd as in episode 4 where we see her Instagram photos she almost always take selfies with other people, and the one pic where she was alone wasn’t a selfie.

https://preview.redd.it/dsuw6urywxoa1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3a80a3546fedd2e96592afd69680c7485af98aa6

Nijika has many reasons to hate Kita, since she ran away during their performance day, and remember when Kita was on her first day working part time at Starry, Nijika asks Bocchi, who is new herself AND antisocial, to teach Kita. Obviously she hates her.

https://preview.redd.it/x26ir5h0xxoa1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=756828b66b3078ec2763ee9737a9a2105ffc8d29

In episode 8’s afterparty, the reason why Nijika went out alone is because she didn’t want to sit next to Kita for too long. Think about it, why would a normal person just go outside and just stand there during a party? The only other reason would be to have a smoke. So either she was craving a cigarette, or she just couldn’t put up with Kita’s shit anymore.

Just what the title says... Is bitwarden/vaultwarden still reigning king even with current known auto-fill exploit?
Currently running VaultWarden on Unraid, using bitwarden app.
*edit1 - Hey thanks everyone for the responses. Everyone asking about what the exploit is here is a link that explains it quite well with a response by the bitwarden team:https://www.techspot.com/news/97951-bitwarden-password-manager-browser-extension-has-known-exploit.html
*edit2 - I currently am using it with autofill turned off so not really an issue. Bitwarden wasn't just singled out for being one of many with the same issue the way it handles iframes vs many other is unsafe.

2023.03.05 20:53 makmanred How a friend had $600k stolen by malware : Be careful with browser auto-fill

I DO NOT know whether the current MyAlgo situation is related to the attack outlined below and it is not my intention to argue that this is what was used.
But the underlying issues described are relevant to anyone on *any* chain who uses hot wallets on desktop/laptop, so it might be good to look at.
A friend of mine created a MetaMask hot wallet with $600k in ETH. Ledger was on his to-do list but he procrastinated. After creating the hot wallet, he never even looked at his seed phrase or did any transactions, just let it sit. He still got funds stolen a few months later. How?
He's pretty sure he was hit by Mars Stealer , a tiny (95 KB) malware that was circulating last year. Mars stealer knows where the private keys are held on your local filesystem by MetaMask and other wallet apps. Those keys are encrypted using your user password for the wallet, which seems to be standard and accepted practice.
The problem is, Mars Stealer also knows how to pull plain-text passwords saved for auto-fill from Chrome, Edge, and a few other browsers. That the browser make it so easy to pull this stuff in plaintext is a huge problem.
So if you ask your browser to save your wallet password for auto-fill when it asks, malware can later silently grab it and use it to decrypt your wallet keys - no user interaction needed. This is true even if you simply use the same password with something like netflix.com ; the hackers can go through all your pulled passwords to see if at least one will decrypt the wallet keys.
With a ledger, you are safe even if infected - the keys are stored in your ledger, not the filesystem, so malware can't ever reach them.
If you still want to use a hot wallet, you will want to make sure your wallet app password is never saved by your browser's autofill. You can turn autofill off, use a password manager, etc.
And of course, make sure your computer is protected with antivirus / malware defense, although that can never be assumed to be foolproof. If you are targeted, even more so the case.
---
EDIT: a couple of technical comments - first, the browser technically does encrypt your auto-fill passwords using Windows DPAPI which uses your Windows login credentials, and if you were to take the file to a different machine, you wouldn't be able to see the passwords. Problem is, when the malware executes, it's running as you - and Windows allows the malware to call the same API to decrypt.
Secondly, although Mars Stealer is Windows malware, there's nothing technically prohibiting this kind of attack on mac, as far as I can see. Chrome on Mac uses OSX keychain for its password encryption/decryption . Malware can decrypt the Chrome passwords, but OSX will throw up a keychain access security warning window first. If you mindlessly approve it away, however, your passwords will get revealed.

2023.02.11 12:05 prophase25 Autocomplete on Safari / consistency across browsers

I ran into an issue this week that was driving me nuts. I built a new form to replace an old one for a client; in doing so, I made it mobile accessible. Foreshadowing...
We would occasionally get form submissions that had a different field (that had "name" as part of its placeholder) filled out with the person's actual name. To be clear, this was an unrelated field - it was not intended for the person's name.
It was infrequent enough that I initially wrote it off as people being... people. However, I had two separate form submissions earlier this week that had this same issue. Given that I had just re-written the entire form (which also connects to an extremely complicated express/node backend), I wasn't sure where the issue was in the code.
My client brought up that maybe it was autocomplete doing this - but that field has autoComplete="off". In my browser, it worked just fine. I expected that to be consistent across ALL browsers. Boy, was I wrong.
After hours & hours of pulling my hair out, I got an iPhone to test this on. Turns out, not only does iPhone Safari ignore the autoComplete field being set to off, it also chooses the autofill type based on the string "name" being in the input's placeholder!!
I am thinking that this has to be an issue others have seen before, but I'm having trouble finding a real solution here. If you check out the MDN HTML docs for autocomplete, scroll down to browser compatibility, you'll see that even they do not have a genuine answer as to whether or not the autocomplete field has an effect on Safari.
I can tell you from experience that setting the autocomplete attribute to something like "given-name" will work for autocomplete of a first name - but setting it "off" will not actually turn off autofill.
How are you all handling this in your code?

2022.12.12 02:43 danieldbunnjr IIS website - Chrome Autofill issue from Hell, please help...

I have the stupidest issue in the world, but I was told that I must fix it in order to press on. I need to migrate the DNS for an entire environment in Route 53. Before I can do that I had to move all websites hosted in a certain environment to a new domain.
All I literally did was add new DNS records, then added some bindings to some existing sites. The sites didn't change in any way.
There is this woman who is making me miserable. Just bitch, bitch, bitch... Never meeting me in the middle or trying to help. She will send an email with a 25 item list of things that are "not working" but no insight to a single one. When I say, can you provide some details so i know what to look at - she will reply, "I have none. I just hope it works during the next session in x..." And I know that 25 item list is maybe 1 -2 things max.
The problem is - she was using site http://thissite.littledomain.com. I added these bindings because littledomain.com is going away.
When she uses http://thissite.littledomain.com in Chrome - she can save passwords but not autofill the form when going to the site in the future. Basically - the password is saved, but the login form never autofills any of the saved creds. However, when she uses thissite.bigdomain.net - the form always autofills after saving passwords. She claims that this is a major major issue and she cannot have forms autofilling. But at the sae time she MUST be able to save passwords. She wants to have her cake and eat it to and I am pulling my hair out
I don't know why the old domain does not autofill when she saves but the new domain totally autofills when saving. i can reproduce on my end, but honestly this is such a tiny thing I haven't wanted to give a ton of time to it because in the grand scheme of things - I need to be moving DNS.
This woman is holding me hostage over this. So I appreciate any insight. It's such a bizarre "non" issue.
Ordinarily, I'd ignore her and just move the DNS. But she just will not work with me. I told her the cut off was Dec 19 and thissite.littledomain will not work past then. her response,
"That's fine.
Just make sure it works in Janurary."
I am working with a literal wall. Does anyone have any possible insight with this issue? Thanks. There s no going to someone and explaining - my only option is to resolve because this somehow affects training. This is so obscure it is very hard to Google.
Autocomplete is off in the html form.
EDIT
I think I might have found it. Chrome ignores autocomplete=off unless it is on But that doesn't explain why it works on the old site. I'm going to modify the html to test and hopefully that's it and I can pass onto dev....

2022.11.28 04:40 fullofrage-00 Need Help with Powershell LOTL attack

I have been dealing with this for months and noone in my household believes me. They had some half ass IT guy come check out the computers and he recognized 'normal Windows processes' and my family just assumed I was losing it. I sold my android phone and switched to Apple but im still convinced its affecting all of the devices in our home. Im not sure why we were attacked or what theyre looking for ... First I suspected crypto mining, then thought it was coming in through our router, after a few months I thought it was One Drive. But now I am leaning more towards Powershell is being remotely used and reporting EVERYTHING back to a group of people. It's borderline creepy and Im hoping someone in here can give me some validation and feedback. Im an accountant.. so I can recognize an idea of what is going on but have NO clue how to get these assholes out of my and my moms devices. Shes newly retired and id hate to see anything happen to any of her assets.
First is there something I can do to just CUT off them seeing this? or safe guard while I post in here? Or a better means of communicating or even hiring someone to assist me if im not capable? When I post about it or search they send off tons of pop ups, fake buttons, fake log outs, text runs vertically up and down the screen, its bat shit crazy.
There are tons of tasks set up. THOUSANDS of screenshots being taken in the background. My computer 'virtually'? has 200,000 plus files and I have no access to them. Drivers refuse to update they just roll back. Some are from 2015. Currently my speakers are disabled. Sometimes they disable my wireless adaptor. Currently my taskbar says im in airplane mode. Its like being gaslit 24.7 by life, lol. Really makes me wanna throw anything electronic out the window.
We have no network set up in our house and I even turn network sharing off and somehow despite flashing the desktop computer and laptop ROM in the house and installing everything fresh, a global network? gets set back up. Everything starts again. I usually dont have admin rights.
Posting some of the back up of what I saw today below.. from what I searched many of you are familiar with this and dont need my frustrated venting. I apologize for the shitty formatting, Im exhausted and just wanted to get everything out. Thank you in advance.

2022.10.07 17:36 Manoj_Malhotra Last Friday, CBS cancelled a segment about our clients suing Amazon for selling suicide kits to their now deceased kids. - Carrie Goldberg of C.A. Goldberg Law

Last Friday, CBS cancelled a segment about our clients suing Amazon for selling suicide kits to their now deceased kids. CBS’ cowardice gave me renewed clarity about how urgent this litigation is. 🧵@naomi_leeds 1/
As background, on Feb 3, 2022 we filed a lawsuit in WA State against Amazon on behalf of the Estate of Mikael Scott. In Dec. 2020 Mikael purchased a chemical from Amazon, 98% pure Sodium Nitrite, for $19.99. 2/
It was prime delivered two days later. He died three days after that. There is no household use for pure SN, a chemical that when mixed with water and swigged causes a very painful death within 20 min. 3/
(NOTE: the product we’re suing about should not be mistaken for curing salt which is only 6% pure SN and used to cure meats.). Starting in April 2021, we began urging Amazon to stop 4/
selling suicide kits to households. Unlike other products that could be used for suicide (i.e. knives, ropes), there is no other use for Sodium Nitrite at this level of purity outside the laboratory. And Amazon was bundling SN with other products to basically create 5/
create a suicide kit -- Amazon recommends that purchasers also buy Tagamet to avoid vomiting up the poison, a personal use scale to measure the proper quantity, and the Amazon Edition of the Peaceful Pill Handbook, a suicide manual with an entire chapter on how to die by SN. 6/
Amazon also routinely removed 1-star reviews from grieving family members trying to warn about the dangers. Amazon’s own search engine helped guide people to the product through autofills. 7/
At the time, we were also taking action with Congress and DOJ and the press to stop the pro-suicide forum that directs people to buy this product from Amazon.
Amazon’s lawyers from Perkins told us Amazon would continue to sell SN because they can’t be held liable if 8/
somebody uses one of their products for suicide.
NOTE: it is against the law in our country to aid or assist in another person’s suicide. In 11 states, under exceedingly narrow and legislated circumstances, physicians are allowed to 9/
carefully facilitate the death of a proven terminally ill patient. However, contrary to what Amazon may think, there is no exception in the law that allows for corporate-assisted suicide. 10/
The day we got the letter from Amazon’s attorney defending their right to continue to sell this product was a turning point in my life. At the same time, my partner in this case and I realized this: Amazon is a serial killer. 11/
Amazon’s decision to continue selling the suicide product was not out of ignorance or obliviousness. It was an intentional counseled decision.
I’d later find out that two weeks after the Perkins lawyers sent me that letter, Amazon sold and prime delivered 12/
17 year old Tyler M from Santa Cruz, California a bottle of SN – the exact same brand as they’d sold to Mikael. His parents went out to dinner for two hours and that was the last time they saw him alive. 13/
Tyler was an athlete, a musician, a math whiz, weeks away from graduating from high school and had never given anybody a hint that he was struggling.
When we filed the lawsuit against Amazon on behalf of Mikael, Tyler’s parents saw an article about it and reached out to us.14/
We made a motion in the WA State Court to add Tyler as a party. Amazon’s lawyers said on the record that it would be “unfair and inhumane” for the two cases to be combined. The judge granted our motion to combine the cases. 15/
On June 17, 2022 we argued against Amazon’s motion to dismiss the case on account of corporations always being totally immune from any liability for suicide. The judge said she’d have a decision in two weeks. We’re still waiting. 16/
For all these months, we’d deliberately avoided press attention to the case. However, we kept hearing from more and more families whose loved ones purchased SN from Amazon and a couple other small online shops that have popped up. 17/
Even more heartbreaking, we got several cases where the children had consumed the SN, immediately notified their loved ones that they’d ingested it and regretted it, and even though EMS reached them in time, 18/
they didn’t recognize the telltale symptoms, saw no instructions on the bottle, and had to contact poison control as the child died in front of them. There is a very effective antidote for SN: Methylene-blue. 19/
But medical providers don’t know in time to give it. (Macabre as it is, Amazon used to sell ad space on the SN page to a company advertising Methylene Blue) We also had a case where a mom saw somebody had ordered SN from her Amazon account, 20/
she didn’t recognize the product and reported it to Amazon. But they sent it anyway after confirming her order was cancelled. A news piece seemed essential to alert doctors, emergency medical providers and parents. Plus, maybe it would pressure Amazon to stop selling it. 21/
We figured it could save thousands of lives.
So a couple weeks ago, I reached out to producers on 60 Minutes with whom I’d collaborated with on their Section 230 segment two years ago. 22/
They told us they didn’t think they could get the 13 minutes they’d need for a 60 Min segment and urged us to work with their news team. They said they could maybe get two five-minute segments on consecutive days. 23/
They told us that there were these two investigative producers who were aggressively and passionately asking to do the piece. We reluctantly said okay. . From the earliest conversations with 60 Minutes and then CBS News, we asked for absolute confirmation 24/
that the network would be willing to talk about suicide – and specifically a method – on the news. We suggested they go talk to suicidologists about how to report it sensitively. 25/
We were assured multiple times that the network was approving the segment and was actively being advised about how to handle it carefully. It would not the first time they had covered suicide. 26/
They said they were doing it during National Bullying month and this would be part of a series where there’d be tons of resources for viewers. I couldn’t believe how 27/
persistent they were in convincing us to let them do the story. Feeling optimistic that their clear dogged passion for the story, plus repeated affirmations of their ethics and expertise, would create a thorough 28/
and professional piece, we agreed to move forward. I told them about Tyler’s case, sent them the complaint, told them about a new filing we were planning for families of a 16 year old and 17 year old 29/
whose loved ones also died from SN that Amazon sold them. I connected them with staff members at Representative Trahan’s office who we’ve gotten really interested in the SN/Amazon issue 30/
and who led the way in sending Amazon a letter last January demanding they account for the SN sales (Amazon blew them off). I gave them the contact information for a toxicology expert. 31/
They wanted to speak to our clients on the record.
We had multiple intense conversations with our clients about what it would mean to participate in a national news story. We vouched for the CBS team and forwarded onto our clients the other pieces they’d done about suicide. 32
Participating was a huge decision for our clients. In one of our cases, the child’s own siblings didn’t know the method she’d used. In another case, the child’s parent was riddled with guilt for obliviously leaving the unopened box containing SN on the counter. 33/
The CBS producers repeatedly assured us they would be kind and careful with our clients. As a lawyer, it is always very scary to introduce a client to the media when they’re dealing with catastrophic trauma and loss 34/
Doesn't trot new clients out for press conferences or media alerts. Scrutiny from the media on top of the loss on top of the tumult of suing on top of their digital footprint forever associated with their loss – it's just too jarring and rarely in the clients’ best interest. 35/
These clients, though, are motivated to save lives and pressure Amazon to stop selling the product. They were willing to put their own needs second if it meant their child’s death could save others. Last week, while we were hustling to meet a filing deadline on the new case, 36/
, I was in frequent communication – calls, texts, zooms -- with the producers who were rushing the story for October. They asked for an exclusive on the new filing. 37/
I let them have a Zoom with one set of parents – though not before asking for double confirmation that the project was going forward, because, I explained, every time the parents have to discuss their child’s suicide, it’s traumatizing and breaks their heart in two. 38/
Then this past Friday, when CBS was in the process of firming up our client’s air travel to NY for filming, the producer called me to tell me he was very sorry. Turns out, he said, that higherups at CBS quashed the story. CBS SPIKED THE STORY. 39/
He said it was because they didn’t want to risk anybody dying from suicide on account of their segment. Well, I really let this guy have it.
My clients took it graciously, but they also saw through the explanation. 40/
One of them said, “Everyone is afraid of Amazon, but it will come out when it's time.” Another said “Maybe the execs at CBS didn't want to be too hard on Amazon since they have a partnership with Amazon Prime.” 41/
It’s true that if you google “Amazon CBS” these two mega companies are seriously interwoven. CBS has a streaming deal with Amazon, ViacomCBS has a big deal for its entire broadcast footprint on AWS. 42/
And Amazon is the number one television advertiser in the country, if not world.
CBS’ failures have been demoralizing and deeply confusing. If it was really about not wanting to report on suicides, why did they assure us so many times they knew how to handle it? 43
How come they had confidently spotlighted suicide before, but this was different? How could these professionals have treated grieving, devastated families with such callousness? What’s clear to us is that Amazon knowingly profits from suicide. 44/
And proceeds as if it’s too big to be burdened by morality. If no news organization is willing to shine a light on this mass homicide, I’ll do it here on Twitter and in the courts. 45/

2022.09.01 16:57 Snoo52812 What would you consider an appropriate 'order of operations' for learning these concepts/subjects as a developer?

TLDR: You can skip to the subjects and read the first sentence of each to get the main idea, without reading my whole life story, haha.
I'm a junior software developer, however, I had a bad childhood and effectively dropped out of high school. I still managed to graduate, but just barely and with poor grades. I didn't go to college. I wasted the first few years after highschool doing drugs & playing video games. During covid 19 I studied my ass off and taught myself how to code-- and landed myself a developer role. I'm handling all the tasks given to me, and in some capacities, I would say I'm not even the worst of the juniors. (definitely worlds behind the seniors though.)
I want to get my stuff together, but I want to focus on self teaching first. I'll go back to school after I feel a bit more comfortable, so I don't feel like I need to rush through the 'non code' related courses and can instead take my time and take it all very seriously.
I feel like these are the things I need to learn/improve on, but I don't know which to prioritize over which.

2022.07.31 21:26 OverlyOptimisticNerd Reminder: Please take the time to set up digital wallets for online shopping. They'll make your shopping a little more secure.

Digital wallets are the online equivalent of that little chip in your card. So in order for me to explain what makes digital wallets so great, I need to explain why that chip is so great. However, I'm going to focus less on technical info and more on layman's terms.
The chip (EMV, stands for "Europay, Mastercard, and Visa," the three companies that came up with it) is a more secure way of using your credit card in person over the outgoing (not fast enough!) magnetic stripe. The mag stripe isn't secure, and it transmits your card's physical data through the payment terminal. It is static information that does not change. The EMV chip generates a randomized "token" to communicate with your issuing bank. When the transaction is authorized, your full card details are not transmitted to the merchant.
Using tap-to-pay, either with the card directly, or through digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, is very similar. When you store your card in such a wallet, a token is generated. The card gets a virtual number that is different from the physical number. Using Apple Wallet, for example, select one of your credit cards. Then select the 3-dot menu in the top right. In the details you'll see "Card Number," showing the last-4 digits of the physical card. You'll also see "Device Account Number," which is the last-4 digits of the virtual card number used for actual transactions. Like the EMV chip, this prevents your actual card number being transmitted during transactions. Google's instructions - Automatic security features Virtual account numbers. (I have never used Samsung Pay and am not qualified to speculate on it, which is why I omitted it here.)
But none of this solves the problem of shopping online, where you generally either type out the physical card's numbedetails, or use some form of auto-fill. Using HTTPS, you SHOULD be secure. But if you have a keylogger? Or if the website is compromised? Or if you store your details with them for autopay and they are subsequently compromised (this is more variable and complicated, maybe another thread)? All of these are valid concerns. That's where online digital wallets come in. They make online checkout easier and, more importantly, more secure.
Unfortunately, there is no standard so you'd want to set up multiple digital wallets. The ones I can think off of the top of my head are:
You're probably familiar with all of them to some degree, but I'll give a brief description and my thoughts on each.
Apple Pay: As far as I know, you need an Apple Device to set this up. I've seen very few online merchants (speaking of a desktop web browser) where there is an Apple Pay option at checkout, but they do exist. If you already have this setup on your i-device(s), then using this is going to be easy, convenient, and secure.
G Pay: You need a Google account to set this up. Go to the Google website, click your picture/icon in the top right, and select "Manage your Google Account." From there, Payments & Subscriptions on the left side. Then manage Payment methods. (If you've set these up on your Android phone, you're already set). This will do two things for you. 1) It enables Chrome's autofill for payments. 2) If you see the G Pay icon at checkout, it lets you securely checkout without providing your card's details to the merchant, UNLIKE autofill. Like Apple Pay, I don't see this too often on a desktop web browser. But it does exist.
Amazon Pay: Chances are that you already have an Amazon account. If you've stored any payments with Amazon, then you've already got this set up. If you see this button at checkout on another website, then it allows you to buy from that merchant without transferring your credit card details to them. I don't see this too often, but it seems to be more common on desktop shopping sites than Apple Pay and G Pay.
PayPal: Arguably the Godfather of online payments and used far more commonly than the three above combined (in my experience), PayPal will also allow you to store your payment credentials and shop online without providing your card's details to the merchant. If you're only willing to sign up with one online digital wallet, then you'll get the most use out of this one. For now, because the one below is nipping at its heals...
Click to Pay: This is essentially the online equivalent to EMV (the EMV SRC standard). All 4 card vendors have agreed to use it. Visa Checkout and Masterpass were shuttered in favor of this combined method. There are some downsides to Click to Pay. 1) Their icon is tiny and I often miss it in the sea of PayPal and Amazon Pay logos at checkout. It's almost invisible on a white background at times. 2) There's no central place to register your cards. There are different places to register Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. If you carry at least one of each card type, you're registering your cards at 4 different places (though when you click the logo at checkout, it pulls all of them). 3) In my experience, it's not as common as PayPal, about on par with Amazon Pay, and ahead of Apple/Google. But it only came out recently and uptick is fast. To register your cards, follow these links: Visa MasterCard American Express Discover A note on registering. Visa and MC require enrolling each card. American Express is already done for you by virtue of having an online Amex account. I don't have a Discover and don't know how that works. I just did a test purchase (didn't complete checkout) at Lowe's. I clicked the Click to Pay logo (which also had Visa, MC, and Amex logos for me, as those are my cards). MasterCard then wanted me to input a security code. Once I did, all of my registered cards (Visa/MC manually, Amex automatically) show up as options for me to complete checkout with.
Venmo: Prior to researching this post, I didn't even realize that they acted as a digital checkout/wallet option. Only time I've ever seen them was with the note below (Samsung). So I'm adding them here with the assumption that they likely behave similar to the options above, but I have not personally used them for this purpose or verified their functionality.
A note on Samsung Pay - I've never seen it used on desktop browsed shopping sites. And in researching this post I went to Samsung's US website to begin a test purchase. They do not take Samsung Pay/Wallet on their own website (though they do take PayPal, Venmo, Amazon Pay, and G Pay). If Samsung doesn't take it, and I can't see it anywhere else, I'm going to assume it's a phone-only wallet at this time. Sorry.
TLDConclusion:
Online shopping and storing your credit card cannot be avoided. But you can minimize this footprint by using online digital wallets where available. And you probably already have a few of them set up without even trying. Amazon? If you shop there, then Amazon Pay is already set up. Use the digital wallet on your Apple or Android phone? Then you're already setup with Apple Pay and/or Google Pay (unless you opted for Samsung Pay, which I have not seen online in my desktop shopping). PayPal is also incredibly common. Click to Pay is the emerging standard, but not something you would have defaulted to like the others.
My advice is that when you see these logos at checkout, delay your checkout long enough to configure that digital wallet, and then you can use it going forward. The marketing terms "fast, easy, secure" do apply to these payment methods.
I hope this post has been useful. Again, I went for layman's understanding above technical accuracy, but if you see something that needs correcting, please let me know.

2022.05.26 04:55 Sl0wg0ld Suspicious Email about Commencement

Hey Huskies,
I could be totally wrong about this, but an email going out to graduates saying there's been an issue with paying for honor cords. I find it highly suspicious for a few reasons which I will list below. Heres the text of the email.
************
Dear Graduate,
We have identified a technical issue with your Commencement Registration/Order Form submission. Unfortunately, due to an error in our system, you were not charged for the price of the honor cord(s) you added to your order. The rest of your payment was collected correctly.
Please follow the instructions below to fill out a supplementary form to submit payment for your honor cord(s):

Please accept our apologies for the issue, and for the inconvenience we know is involved with having to fill out this supplementary form!
This issue only affects a small number of transactions. There is no need to contact anyone else to alert them to this issue. If they were affected by this error, they have been contacted and given the same information that you are receiving in this email.
If you have any questions about the process or encounter any issues, please let us know by responding to this email.
We look forward to seeing you at Cap & Gown Pickup!
Best,
Kip Carleton
UW Office of Ceremonies
commence@uw.edu
If you would like to confirm that your order total did not include the cost of your cord(s), click the "Registration/Order Form" link on this page, and then click the "View Form HTML" button. Scroll to the "Review your Order / Invoice and Proceed to Checkout" section and add up the cost of your individual items to compare it with the listed subtotal.
********
OK so what's weird about this?
Its addressed to "Dear Graduate"
UW knows our names, why wouldnt they personalize this for something so individual. They say later that its only a small number of people so why not use a system to make the same message go out to each person but with their name autofilled on top?
The links lead to URLs with "Collegenet.com", not any official UW platform. That might just be a decentralized system for these payments, but its too weird to ignore.
The email says to open it in a private browser or in incognito mode. Why would that be important? It also says to not tell anyone about it.
"There is no need to contact anyone else to alert them to this issue. If they were affected by this error, they have been contacted and given the same information that you are receiving in this email."
That is all very strange to me. I've seen the sophistication of some phishing scams on campus, so although it comes from [commence@uw.edu](mailto:commence@uw.edu), it could still totally be a scam in my view.
Let me know if I'm way off base on this, or if you agree it seems strange.
Cheers!
