2024.06.04 16:57 CacheConqueror Apologies for my last one related to the financing of the machine for AI

Quite recently I wrote a post regarding big dreams along with asking where I could try to ask for such equipment.
I would like to apologise to everyone reading and commenting, but you are right, my post was 10% complete and consisted of word salad. It was like a pure scam I wrote and reacted emotionally for which I apologise, I should have thought about the post and described in detail my situation and the goal I would like to achieve and only used a few words without meaning. I'm ashamed to admit it, but I've been under a lot of stress and I'm starting to have symptoms of depression from worrying about the future I'm facing. Honestly, I can't imagine not working in programming because I really enjoy it and, most importantly, I live for it.
In short, I am a developer of mobile applications on Android phones, I write in the kotlin language. I have less than 3 years of experience in this field. I happened to find some additional work in C# language in Unity mainly for short periods usually 4-5 months. I have been writing in C# for over a year. I am currently working as a programmer in Kotlin, but it is not a secure job. In addition, there are not many of these offers on the job market, if some appear there are a lot of people willing to do it. So much so that employers get 100+ applications each. I am not at all surprised that I hardly ever get a response, because I know the situation and I know that the people who apply have a lot more knowledge. Even though I sometimes see requirements for 2 years of experience in kotlin and I meet the expectations I don't get a response. You might think my application is weak, but I've gotten honest feedback twice about matching the requirements, yet people with 4-5 years of experience have applied, so that rules me out.
Why AI and python?
Looking at kotlin, C# or any other programming language, job offers are not plentiful. It is known that the language itself is not everything, but knowledge of frameworks or tools is not a problem for me. What do I see a lot of? Python developers, AI engineers and Machine learning engineer for example.
In the "AI zone", according to the offers I found, I should learn to:
I won't list everything, but these requirements were more or less repeated.
I don't sit around passively and after all the chores and work I sit up until night and learn Python and machine learning. As I mentioned in a previous post I'm a very fast learner and although it seems like a lie, I was honestly promoted from junior to mid after a year of programming in kotlin because the leader and manager on my team saw that I could write very well, cleanly and fast for my overall experience. And here it is worth noting that I did not use any AI. The company's network does not allow the use of Gemini, ChatGpt, copilot and others and even if I tried to bypass it with my own internet, there were also blockers and firewall on the computer itself. I recently tried to get an internship specifically in Python and machine learning, but unfortunately I was unsuccessful - people with more experience in this area also applied for the internship. However, the people from the company were so kind that instead of a simple email rejecting my application, they invited me for an "interview" regarding me. They see potential in me and mentioned that I should not give up but learn and try to call them next year, as they will also be looking for an internship.
During this conversation, people from the industry in artificial intelligence told me that for such positions, people who have downloaded models from a site like huggingface in addition to python itself and definitions at home gain a big advantage. They explained that if someone built an app or anything else, used models for it, practised it and tried to modify it for their own requirements, they were creative people with a future. They even gave the example that one person who applied for the position put up his ‘own’ AI taught to his preferences. Being able to use this within his online network impressed them especially how he presented use cases. I don't know if the person who presented this, hosted it on his own hardware, but I think it would be an even bigger plus for me if I took on such a challenge.
Maybe I am naïve, but I would very much hope for at least this internship in a year's time, because perhaps it would open up a path in this career so that I would not be so stressed about my own future, because in addition to kotlin I would have this other, currently strong position in the market.
This is an interesting subject for me and although difficult in contrast to kotlin I believe I will learn it faster. I have a very good knack for analytical and predictive thinking, so I am hoping that this will help at least a little in learning faster.
Why was there a question on my part about where I could ask for funding for equipment?
I am not a person who begs. I reacted too emotionally under stress and started to panic looking for any options to get the right equipment.
I've been reading the threads and honestly I don't even know myself which equipment would be suitable for this. I've heard a lot about the Dell Optiplex and Lenovo Thinkcentre, but I don't know if there's enough computing power to host at least medium-sized models. I'm not talking about ChatGPT right away, because that is physically impossible to achieve, but I also don't want to host the smallest and not very capable model. I have read the opinion that it would be good to have such equipment with NVIDIA Tesla GPU, for example NVIDIA rtx a4500 or Nvidia RTX A2000.
On the one hand I was thinking of some cheaper or mid-range dell optiplex or lenovo thinkcentre model, on the other hand I was looking at similar solutions with such a GPU then prices ranged from 4000$.
I apologise to you for the previous post and in this one, in addition to setting things straight, I would like to ask for your advice.
Q: What hardware do you recommend that I could put such AI on? Dell optiplex, lenovo thinkcentre, or are there other solutions?
I make no secret of the fact that if I manage to put money aside for such equipment I would like to exploit its potential and use it not only to put up an AI model, but also to put up at least jellyfin, vakunji and other available services. I realise that there is temporary free access to at least Google Cloud, where I could use the free credits for the next internship recruitment and use this temporarily. However, I'm concerned that it might not be that impressive, because from what I understand a similar solution has already been presented to them by a person who has made an impression. As a result, I am so set on investing and trying it, but the cost of more powerful equipment is too much.
A friend of mine was already completely out of touch with reality because he showed me, for example, such equipment as a minimum: https://www.sedatech.net/en/workstation-intel-xeon-w9-quadro-rtx-a6000-17682?c=25 ...but I only realised this after writing the first post.... (A friend supposedly has 6 years of experience in python and data engineering so I trusted him).
I panicked, found the wishtender website and started looking for similar with the hope of trying to get at least $5000 for such equipment. Honestly over the course of this year I will manage to save a maximum of $400.
It's a bit sad that even a friend won't offer to help but adds expensive and unobtainable equipment for me. I didn't mean to sound bad in my previous post so I wanted to write an apology and explanation.
Thank you all and have a nice day

2024.06.04 16:39 ifeelawolo Having problems.... AGAIN

Hello everyone. I hope you have a great day!
I'm at my wits' end with this PC that I have built and worked my ass off for 1 and a half years. Constant and infuriating problems. Worse off, they seem to get fixed only to come back 1-2 months later. I can't seem to find a solution despite searching the internet to my best capability. I come here asking for help, and any of it will be and is greatly appreciated I am dumbfounded and don't know what to do next.
Long post incoming.
Please excuse me in advance if i make spelling mistakes, English is not my primary language.
Context: At the beginning of 2023 i built my dream PC: -ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-E GAMING WIFI -Ryzen 9 7950x -EK AIO 360 ELITE cooler -G.skill 32GB DDR5 6000Mhz -RTX 4090 GPU PALIT GAMEROCK -2TB WD SN850X -256GB ADATA pci-e 3.0 SSD (only for game recordings) -Seasonic GX 1300W Gold PSU -9 PC case fans (not including the 6 from the CPU cooler) -SAMSUNG ODYSEY G7A 4K 144hz monitor -Logitech G560 Gaming Speakers -Usb extender for my external HDD where i keep my game recordings.
I watched every possible PC Building tutorial. Read information including here on reddit on how to build, what to watch out etc. I built the PC and apart of some very hard cable management it worked fine for about 2 months. Then problems started to appear. Problems that to this day it seems, i cannot find the real solution for them.
The problem(s): 1. After 2 months of working perfectly fine, the pc ABSOLUTELY refused to boot with EXPO enabled. No matter what i did, i could not get it to POST with the EXPO profile enabled. Tried EXPO 1 and EXPO 2 EXPO 1 did not post. Q-LED stuck on on ORANGE - required manual reboot EXPO 2 worked for a short amount of time, then the system crashed constantly with BSOD's like (MEMORY_MANAGEMENT) , (ATTEMPTED TO WRITE TO READONLY MEMORY), and more, but i can't remember all of them. Since I saw a noticeable performance loss without EXPO enabled, i returned the RAM. The manufacturer did replace it, i checked, it had different S/N numbers. I put the new RAM in the PC, make sure it is seated properly, enable EXPO and problem solved!...... Or so it seemed, for the next 2-3 months
2. After 2-3 months I begin to get some weird screen flickering ONLY IN GAME PAUSE MENUS. The screen acts as if i take out the DisplayPort connector and plug it back in. Only in game pause menus. This can happen as a one-off or 30 times in the span of 15 seconds. I begin to stress test GPU, no artifacting, no errors, no crashes, it only flickers when games are paused and i'm staring at the pause menu. It does happen in mostly older games where the FPS jumps above 144 in the pause game screen. In Red dead redemption 2 this seems to happen in a continuous mode. Being afraid of my GPU being defective and due to the fact that at problem 1 it took me some time to get the ram to be replaced, i immediately pull it out and file a warranty request. I do this without researching properly this problem, in fear because this GPU cost me 2200euros at the time of purchase, and at this point about 6 months have passed since i've built this pc. While GPU was in warranty processing i take my time to research this problem to see why it could happen and if someone else did experience something simmilar. Low and behold i stumble upon a reddit post about the exact same samsung monitor that i have, with a video which shows the exact same problem. Turns out, it was from the monitor. In some games due to the GPU being able to hit more than 144fps the monitor needs to switch from G-sync mode to non G-sync mode and this causes the flicker. It somehow happens only in game menus, not in ACTUAL GAMEPLAY, as games can run above 144fps without flickering. Now that i know this i was pretty sure they would return my card as not being defective, but i didn't regret sending it in for warranty.... Better safe than sorry, right ? And now the only good thing in this whole story: They ended up refunding my card as somehow the manufacturer deemed it defective, but they didnt have any stock of 4090's so.... I ended up purchasing another for 1800 euros as by the time it came back in stock it was considerably cheaper. Win-win, i basically got a new gpu after using the old one for half a year, and at a sizable discount. And the new one somehow had way less flickering in the exact same situations where with the old one screen would flicker 15 times in 5 seconds. I was happy. This was actually a 'bug' in the monitor so, not the PC's fault.
Until 3 months later when something, this time more aggravating started happening.
3. After 3 months, while gaming I get a CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED BSOD. No crash dumps were made. Could not find any with WhoCrashed. I chalk it up being some outdated bios. I update the bios to the (then) most recent one, and pc works fine for about a week. Then I get a SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION bsod. After this BSOD, a strange behaviour started manifesting: To make it more clear i will explain first 3 states of the pc: the HOT one, the COLD one and the IDLE one. It's easier for me to explain it this way as English is not my primary language, so i'm sorry if i'm over-complicating things.
COLD state - PC has been off for at least 6-8 hours (like when you power it off after a gaming session and go to bed, then start it the next day) HOT state - pc has been running for at least 1-2 hours WHILE doing demanding tasks - cooling system is 'heat soaked' the air from the fans is noticeably hot. PC runs (as expected) noisier while in this state. IDLE state - pc has been left idling for at least 30mins, or i'm doing some non demanding tasks like web browsing, the key here is that the pc is allowed to COOL down returning from HOT state, while powered on. So now that i hopefully clarified what i'll be reffering to, back to my 3rd problem:
The strange behaviour that i observe is as follows: If the pc is booted in COLD state, all works fine, EXPO passes the POST, PC works as expected for as long as I want - i can let it do stress testing for the GPU and CPU at the same time for 2 days straight, no problems with instability. I tested with all the available programs like prime95, Heaven, furmark, OCCT. System seems stable. Except when I do a restart in HOT state. God forbid i have to restart the pc without letting it cool down first.
If i restart the PC in HOT state, no matter if i do a hard reset by pressing the button on the case or hitting the restart button in start menu, PC will now REFUSE to POST. Q-LED stays STUCK ON ORANGE, just like in the past when the ram was faulty. I can get it to POST if i disable EXPO. PC works fine. If i turn EXPO on now that the pc works, and do a restart, surprise, it works like a charm. I am able to game or run stress tests as long as i want. No memtest86 errors both with expo on or off, no prime95 errors, no OCCT errors. The same behaviour repeats if i shut down the pc in the HOT state, right after gaming. When powered back up, even if it's after 5 hours and in theory the pc is at room temperature, will not POST. Then i have to again reset the EXPO, POST, restart, enable EXPO, PC works again no problem.
But here is the mind bending part: IF after gaming or stress testing the pc is allowed to run in IDLE state for some time (to cool down) before shutting down / restarting , the problem DISSAPEARS. The pc can be restarted succesfully, with EXPO, it POSTS like it should, no problems arise. I CANNOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM IF THE PC IS ALLOWED TO IDLE BEFORE SHUTTING DOWN/RESTARTING, NO MATTER WHAT I DO. I can try to restart it several times, it will boot like a charm.
So to recap: PC HOT -> restart in HOT state/shut down and allowed to cool -> no POST with EXPO PC left in IDLE to cool and then shut down/restarted -> cannot reproduce problem, PC works as it should PC booted in COLD state -> cannot reproduce problem. PC works as it should. After succesful boot, pc shows no sign of instability even in a worst case CPU + GPU full load. The above behaviour can be reproduced at any time.
I do research. I make posts asking for help. Nothing that i come across perfectly describes my problem. Thinking that the RAM has a problem i proceed to take out the sticks and swap them, put them back in. Keep in mind that at this point, i already had the sticks replaced under warranty, because of problem no 1.
After I reseat the RAM, PC seems to work fine. No more of this behaviour. I can restart it when HOT and it will work fine. I'm thinking somehow the RAM became unseated ? Anyway, pc seems to work fine. I update the bios as at this point a new one has been released, and continue using the PC no problems at all.
The problem seems to have been solved
But....... After another 3-4 months i start to experience the worst problem of them all, and we are now in the recent time-frame (more than one year has passed since i built the pc). And again the problem has a weird pattern to it, something that i can't explain.
4. When starting to play Warzone after a COLD boot, some short time after the match starts, (this can happen right in the match lobby or 5 minutes after the game has started) i will inevitably get a BSOD. SYSTEM_SERVICE _EXCEPTION or CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED. The computer CANNOT create dump files, it gets stuck at 0% 'we're collecting some information .... ", as from experience i set it such as it will not restart itself in an event of a bsod, so that i can read the error code. The system hangs, will not proceed to create a dump file (Whocrashed won't find any, as opposed to earlier problems where it could create dump files) and requires a manual reboot. And now the saga takes an unexpected turn.
After the restart, there is a 50/50 chance of these 2 things happening: --- the pc won't POST as described in problem 1, the Q-led gets stuck on ORANGE but keep in mind that now the pc DID NOT HAVE THE TIME TO HEAT UP since it happens in short time after launching the game and/or entering a match after a COLD boot. The pc requires constant restarts to even get to the BIOS, will fail to load EXPO a couple times even after booting it without EXPO, it still has a chance of not booting with expo enabled This is problem 1 but on steroids and now happens in this specific scenario: COLD boot, right after launching a game
OR
--- the PC won't POST and it Q-led gets stuck on WHITE (GPU problem) .... I am at a loss of words.... Keep in mind that at this time i've had the RAM and THE GPU replaced ..... And the new RAM reseated earlier due to problem no 3. After a couple of forced restarts, the POST passes the GPU test and am back again to BIOS in SAFE MODE. The system in this state is extremely unpredictable, i cannot enable EXPO, because it either won't pass the RAM test or if it passes it gets stuck on GPU test. This does not happen with EXPO turned off. After being able to boot without EXPO, I can enable it and do a restart succesfully, and stress test the hell out of the pc with NO ERRORS WITH OR WITHOUT EXPO. I did just as i did earlier: Prime95 in combination with furmark, or OCCT, or Heaven. I did a memtest86 over night in both EXPO and non-EXPO, it passed succesfully.
So basically: The PC throws a BSOD only in COLD state. IF the pc is being able to boot after the BSOD, then it is stable, --- all stress tests can't make it throw a BSOD. I can even play Warzone for 10 hours straight after the first BSOD, without it giving another. IF after BSOD can't boot, restart it a couple times and it works after like a charm - i can't make it go unstable again, no matter what i do, except if i restart it from the HOT state, aka problem 1 but now worse ........
All this feels so frustratingly surreal and counterintuitive to me, especially considering the replaced RAM and GPU. I'm at a loss and i don't know what to do. I'm sorry if this post is too long or hard to read, i apologize, i tried to give the best explanation as i can, and i hope someone will be able to help me.
Temperatures measured while gaming: CPU max 75C GPU max 73 hot spot 86 RAM 61C
Temps while stress testing GPU + CPU after 6 hours: CPU max 95C (according to AMD this is expected behaviour) GPU max 76C hot spot 93. RAM 65C
In my opinion, these look fine.
What could be the cause of all these problems ? Why is the PC stable if booted? In my experience if a PC is unstable, the unstability will show itself when put under load, no matter what. On my old 4790K i did overclocking to 4.7 ghz and am accustomed to how instability looks like.... but this ? What is this ? Why after reseating the ram the problems dissapear for a while and then they come back ? If it is unstable it is no matter what the circumstances (or should be), not like this. I am completely and utterly frustrated, dissapointed and sad about this and i do not know what to do next. Please help me. I've spent so much money on this PC only to spend more time diagnosing it than playing games or using it.
To everyone that read this, i thank you and whish you a good day. Any input is greatly appreciated.

2024.06.04 15:14 PetrZitskiy The Legal and Ethical Aspects of Casinos

The Legal and Ethical Aspects of Casinos
[ The Legal and Ethical Aspects of Casinos ]
Casinos, both physical and online, are a significant part of the global entertainment industry. They offer a variety of gambling activities, including slot machines, poker, blackjack, and roulette. However, the operation and participation in casino activities are regulated by a complex web of legal and ethical considerations. This article explores the legal frameworks governing casinos and the ethical issues associated with gambling.

Legal Aspects of Casinos

1. Regulation and Licensing

Casinos operate under stringent regulations to ensure fair play, prevent criminal activities, and protect consumers. Licensing is a crucial aspect, with regulatory bodies such as the Nevada Gaming Commission in the United States, the United Kingdom Gambling Commission, and the Malta Gaming Authority overseeing operations. These bodies set standards for fairness, security, and responsible gambling.

2. Jurisdictional Variations

The legality of casinos varies significantly across jurisdictions. Some countries, like the United States, have complex laws where gambling is legal in some states (e.g., Nevada, New Jersey) and illegal in others. In contrast, countries like Singapore and Macau have heavily regulated but thriving casino industries. Online gambling adds another layer of complexity, as operators must navigate laws in both their home countries and the countries where their players reside.

3. Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Measures

Casinos are attractive targets for money laundering due to the large volumes of cash handled. Regulatory bodies enforce strict AML measures, requiring casinos to implement robust monitoring systems, conduct thorough customer due diligence, and report suspicious activities. Non-compliance can lead to severe penalties, including fines and license revocation.

4. Taxation

Taxation is a significant legal aspect, with governments imposing taxes on casino revenues. The tax rates and structures vary, impacting the profitability of casino operations. In some jurisdictions, players' winnings are also subject to taxation.

Ethical Aspects of Casinos

1. Responsible Gambling

One of the primary ethical concerns is promoting responsible gambling. Casinos must balance profit-making with the responsibility to prevent gambling addiction. Ethical practices include setting betting limits, providing self-exclusion options, and offering resources for problem gambling support. Failure to address gambling addiction can lead to severe social and personal consequences.

2. Fairness and Transparency

Ensuring fairness and transparency is critical. Casinos must guarantee that their games are not rigged and that players have a fair chance of winning. This includes using certified random number generators (RNGs) for online games and adhering to strict operational standards in physical casinos. Transparency in terms and conditions, odds, and payout rates is also essential to maintain trust.

3. Marketing Practices

Ethical marketing is another significant consideration. Casinos must avoid targeting vulnerable populations, such as minors and individuals with gambling addictions. Advertising should be honest and not mislead potential customers about the chances of winning. Promotional offers and bonuses should be clear and not designed to exploit players' weaknesses.

4. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

Casinos have a broader responsibility to contribute positively to society. This includes engaging in CSR activities like supporting local communities, funding educational programs on responsible gambling, and contributing to public health initiatives. Ethical casinos invest in the well-being of their customers and the communities in which they operate.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The legal and ethical aspects of casinos are multifaceted and require a delicate balance between regulation, profit, and social responsibility. Strict legal frameworks ensure that casinos operate fairly and transparently while preventing criminal activities. Ethical considerations focus on promoting responsible gambling, ensuring fairness, and contributing positively to society. As the gambling industry continues to evolve, ongoing vigilance and adaptation are essential to address emerging legal and ethical challenges.

2024.06.04 14:56 Thick-Act-1444 AITA for not pretending that a gift was from my ex wife or reminding her it was the kids birthday

I used to be married a few years ago. It was not a happy marriage and we divorced. She needed to go back to work after the divorce and her quality of life isn't where it was when we were married. Due to this she hasn't handled the transition well and I got primary custody. She sees them on weekends.
It was my middle child's birthday yesterday. She got zero calls from mom, no present was dropped off and she didn't go tot he party. She was invited. She is in 12 years old and noticed right away. She was not happy at all and apparently she promised her that she would at least call.
My daughter sent quite a mad message to her and is ignoring any messages form her mom at the moment. She gave me a call pissed. She called me a asshole for not reminding her at the minimum and that I could have pretended a gift was from her.
I told be it is not my problem and it's not my fault she can't remember basic things.
I don't know if I went to far

2024.06.04 14:46 Oddreaction3943 Tuesday, June 4, 2024 Non Real-Time Meeting of OA

Welcome to this non-real time meeting of Overeaters Anonymous! I’m oddreaction3943 I’m a compulsive eater and your leader for this meeting. Will those who wish, please join me in the Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.
Overeaters Anonymous is a Fellowship of individuals who, through shared experience, strength, and hope, are recovering from compulsive overeating. We welcome everyone who wants to stop eating compulsively. There are no dues or fees for members; we are self-supporting through our own contributions, neither soliciting nor accepting outside donations. OA is not affiliated with any public or private organization, political movement, ideology, or religious doctrine; we take no position on outside issues. Our primary purpose is to abstain from compulsive eating and compulsive food behaviors and to carry the message of recovery through the Twelve Steps of OA to those who still suffer.
Our Invitation to You
The Twelve Traditions of Overeaters Anonymous
Abstinence in Overeaters Anonymous is the action of refraining from compulsive eating and compulsive food behaviors while working towards or maintaining a healthy body weight. Spiritual, emotional, and physical recovery is the result of living the Overeaters Anonymous Twelve Step program.
The OA tools of recovery help us work the Steps and refrain from compulsive overeating. The nine tools are: a plan of eating, sponsorship, meetings, telephone, writing, literature, an action plan, anonymity, and service. For more information, read The Tools of Recovery OA page.
Sponsorship is one of our keys to success. Sponsors are OA members committed to abstinence and to living the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions to the best of their ability. Sponsors share their program up to the level of their experience and strengthen their recovery through this service to others. To find a sponsor, look for someone who has what you want and ask how he or she is achieving it. Will all abstinent sponsors please identify themselves in their post?
According to our Seventh Tradition, we are self-supporting through our own contributions. Our group number is 99038. Please use the group number when making your contribution. As our virtual group currently has no expenses please consider donating directly through this link to the OA World Service Office, who provides resources for OA groups all around the world to carry the message to other compulsive overeaters.
Suggested guidelines for sharing: As you share your experience and strength in OA, please also share your hope. Please confine your sharing to your experience with the disease of compulsive eating, the solution offered by OA, and your own recovery from the disease, rather than just the events of the day or week. When responding to other member’s posts, please focus on your personal experience rather than advice giving. If you are having difficulties, share how you use the program to deal with them. If you need to talk more about your difficulties and seek solutions, we suggest you speak to your sponsor and other members after the meeting.
This is a literature meeting. Today we are studying Book Book Page 25**
There is a solution. Almost none of us liked the self-searching, the leveling of our pride, the confession of short- comings which the process requires for its successful consumation. But we saw that it really worked in others, and we had come to believe in the hopelessness and futility of life as we had been living it. When, therefore, we were approached by those in whom the problem had been solved, there was nothing left for us but to pick up the simple kit of spiritual tools laid at our feet. We have found much of heaven and we have been rocketed into a fourth dimension of existence of which we had not even dreamed.
Closing By following the Twelve Steps, attending meetings regularly, and using the OA Tools, we are changing our lives. You will find hope and encouragement in Overeaters Anonymous. To the newcomer, we suggest attending at least six different meetings to learn the many ways OA can help you. The opinions expressed here today are those of individual OA members and do not represent OA as a whole. Let us all reach out by private message to newcomers, returning members, and each other. Together we get better.

2024.06.04 14:37 DoraLaSevillana Testimonial of a Positive NALCAP Experience

When I was considering the program, I saw various positive and negative experiences talked about here, and they honestly helped create a realistic picture for me, so I've decided to add my own account for all of you consistently perusing this sub.
TL;DR: My experience exceeded all my expectations and I'm so incredibly grateful that I had the luck for my school placements that I did.
The necessary context to know about me before NALCAP is that I studied abroad in Seville in college, had wanted to do Fulbright, and applied to NALCAP as a backup / more sure way to teach English in Spain. I had wanted to return for many years and use the year to chill a bit and decide what to do with my life.
So, I ended up getting a placement in Galicia, my first-choice region, in the first week of June. I immediately did everything to send off my apostille request, and then worked on gathering all the Visa documents. I received my specific school placements in the first week of July. I was assigned to work 16 hours a week between a primary and secondary school in different rural towns. The most frustrating part by far was waiting nearly 8 weeks for the US federal government to get the Apostille back to me. Luckily, I was in the jurisdiction of the SF consulate, so once I received the Apostille back, I was able to immediately send in my Visa application via USPS mail. The turnaround time was about 2.5 weeks for the Visa.
I had limited contact with the school coordinators in July, and my parents worried about the logistics of how I would get to work, where I would live, etc. However, in September, I was able to get more information and decide to live in the city and carpool with other teachers who also lived in the city.
I arrived to Spain on September 21 and literally spent a week walking to all the real-estate agencies in the city asking about rooms or apartments for rent. I met another auxiliar outside of one of these agencies and we decided to be roommates. [Ironically it wasn't until I signed back into this alt account earlier this calendar year that I noticed she had DMed me way back before I got here. We literally found each other randomly on the street without having any idea.] We were able to find another person and decided to rent a place together.
I quickly learned the routines of 2 days a week at a secondary school in English, Math, and Music classes, and 2 days a week in a pre-school and primary school in English and Art classes. The teachers I was with didn't ask me to do much aside from present about holidays, read things aloud, and converse with the kids. Outside of class time, I got to know other staff at the schools, and I actually looked forward to getting up every day knowing that I would be able to chat with them.
My philosophy throughout the year was to "yes" to almost any invite, and through that I met many great people. Towards the end of the year, some of my colleagues also invited me places, and I really appreciated that they thought I was worth getting to know outside of the obligatory work environment. I will miss the students, colleagues, and friends that I have made, but I am sure that I will be back to visit.
I won't claim that this program made me into the best teacher ever, but it did give me opportunities to hone my patience, flexibility, and willingness to leave my comfort zone. I am not a parent but working with kids and having the feeling that "I just want them to succeed" made me appreciate parents (including my own) more than before. I feel very lucky with how everything panned out for me and that I will stay in contact with people that I have met this year. It was 100% worth braving the bureaucracy and uncertainty while receiving a placement.
If you're thinking about doing it or not, I'd challenge you to say "yes" and face the unknown. It could be bad, but it could also be really good!

2024.06.04 14:25 xtracrunch9 Contacted for a Mentor Program by who claims to be a Kickstarter employee. Is it a scam?

I received a couple of messages yesterday, one from a "Kickstarter Support" and one from the Head of Communication at Kickstarter, NIkki Kria, or at least someone who claims to be her.
They invited me to participate to a "mentor program", and after I said yes they shared the contact of a couple of creators that could have helped me with the project.
For both the contacts they shared their telegram and email address.
What I noticed is that both these "creators" communicated to me with the same phrases and words. There were some changes but the tone of their text was the same.
Is this a scam? Are there people impersonating Kickstarter employees and support?

2024.06.04 14:23 x-debug my first macOS app - WriterCure

my first macOS app - WriterCure
English is not my first language, so I often make some grammar mistakes when writing copy to promote products. I also use English in my work, and every spelling error in English makes me feel embarrassed. Coincidentally, during that time, I was learning Swift for iOS. I came across information online that Swift could also be used for macOS, which got me very excited. During that week, with the help of GPT, I managed to create a simple version of "Writercure," initially named "GPT Agent." Later on, through research, I found out about a software called Grammarly that was already doing something similar. I installed it, tried to understand it, and found it to be perfect, just what I needed. However, the free version had many limitations, and the paid version required over $10 per month, which seemed a bit unreasonable to me. If I only needed to use it occasionally, paying over $10 every month felt like a waste. I hoped for a pay-as-you-go model where I could pay for the software once.
At that time, GPT was gaining popularity, and everyone was amazed by its capabilities. I wondered why not give it a try. Despite not having experience in Mac app development and being a web developer by profession, with some basic programming knowledge and a strong interest, I decided to tackle this challenge. Although I wasn't sure if I could pull it off at the time, I thought, why not give it a shot? With the help of GPT and my limited programming foundation, I stumbled along, writing a little bit every day for over three months, as I still had my 9-5 job. As I completed features, I started using the software daily, fixing and releasing updates on the same day if issues arose.
When it was almost ready, I shared my software with my friend Leon, an excellent web developer who, like me, needed to communicate with clients in English almost daily. He quickly downloaded and tested my software, providing feedback on existing issues. I promptly made the necessary changes and released a new version. At this point, I realized that my software could indeed help some people, despite not being perfect and being my first macOS product. Its primary focus was on correcting grammar errors, which is what I aimed for. My next step will involve regular maintenance and further developing my macOS skills to support this project. I'm sharing the genuine and complete story here without any advertising intention, so I won't include any links.

2024.06.04 14:10 Aggravating-Fig1846 Toured ABA facility yesterday

I toured a highly reviewed ABA facility yesterday because we are looking for ABA for my son. The therapy is 8 hours per day, 5 days a week, and seems to consist of tightly controlled chunks of time. each child is with a RBT, the RBT has a tablet, and the tablet tells the RBT what to do. Down to the second it seems; eg one RBT had a timer set for 5 minutes on her tablet while a child jumped on a trampoline. It was a little strange to watch, as the RBTs were mostly looking down at their tablets, pecking away, while the child completed the activity.
I asked whether the BCBA was involved, and it seems like BCBA primary involvement is building the programs that get loaded onto the tablet. From an efficiency/economic standpoint, I have to say it seems like a great business model, especially since insurance is the payor.
I guess my primary question is: is this the system/setup that works best for children? if so, great. Or should I be looking for a different/better setup?

2024.06.04 13:58 badassbradders Lessons from within the film industry

Sorry: This is a bit of a long one that covers my process of understanding the industry to where I am today. I wanted to give some honest background without advertising anything, as I truly believe that this sub will massively benefit from insider knowledge—especially after the last few interactions I've seen here. So here it goes. I hope you can take something from it, and we can have a good honest discussion about your experiences as well.
Back in 2009, I took it upon myself to make six short films in 12 months. I was an actor at the time and finding it really tough to break into the film industry. One of the ways in, as an actor, is to get great material for your showreel so you get a better agent, and then more auditions for films—especially UK-based or US-based work. It felt like a real paradox, though, something that I would feel is the problem across the entire industry, not just for actors. I tried to make six films, but the process took on a life of its own. I made three films in that year instead, and ended up doing something totally unexpected at the end.
My first short film, I messed up royally by shooting on a flight path, and I also made the mistake of casting the cool guy alongside me, instead of the diligent nervous one—who in hindsight, I know would have brought buckets of enthusiasm to "the shoot"—which ended up being a complete disaster due to the cool guy failing to turn up (we had to literally get him out of bed), and he hadn't learned his lines. The second film was my manga opus, but looking back on it now, I made all the mistakes: The stakes of the drama needed to be higher and despite excellent performances from my entire cast, I came across as wooden, stressed, and disconnected from everything—from the actions to my lines, to the second-guessing of my impulses, on every line—basically, I was terrible in that film. The third was a rained-off weekend, where we had planned to shoot a sci-fi Philip K. Dick inspired short, shot in a field, but then ended up shooting a film about chess in a cleared-out lounge in my old shared house in Kilburn due to the rain—it rained all weekend. We had been given a Canon C300—which at the time was a serious camera—for free by a rental house that was more than happy to let us have it for that weekend—but that weekend only. This third film was poorly shot, to the point where in the edit I had to make it black and white, as the skin tones were terrible and each frame was completely void of surrounding narrative. It was flat; it was rubbish.
At the time, though, I thought these three films were the bee's knees, and the entire process had led me to start calling myself a "filmmaker." But I wasn't creatively honest, but that didn't stop me from submitting to as many film festivals as I possibly could. I felt that if I could get some laurels, and maybe meet some producers, I would be all set on my new path—maybe do a bit of acting here and there, but ultimately I would be snapped up as the next Jason Blum and begin my journey into Hollywood. I had read Robert Rodriguez's excellent book "Rebel Without A Crew," and his last line just filled me with so much enthusiasm for filmmaking that I had to do it. In the book, he is at Sundance hanging out with Quentin Tarantino, and I was so FOMO about it all I desperately wanted to be a part of that world. So I began submitting.
I spent, I reckon, over £1500 over a period of maybe six months on all three films trying to get them into festivals. The first film, "The Park," got an official selection at The Irvine Film Festival, and for my second film, the one I was really proud of, I had submitted to Tribeca, Slam, Sundance, Raindance, and AFI. For some reason, I had a real bee in my bonnet about AFI. I thought that if I got into that festival, I would surely be on my path to becoming one of the greats. Then on Withoutabox, the anxiety-riddled yellow dot became a red one and joined all the others on my festival status page for that second film, "Illuminating The Senior Partner." Ugh. The deflation was REAL!
A few weeks passed, and I kept thinking about that AFI rejection, what it meant, and what I needed to do better. Raindance was coming up, another fest I was rejected for, and one of my friends from drama school had managed to be in a short that got accepted there. He invited me to go and take a look at it in the selected shorts program, so I was super interested in attending. It would have been the same festival that had my film got in, I would have been at, so I thought, f*ck it, and in true Jodorowsky spiritual warrior style, I went along.
The short films blew me away. The standard was far, FAR beyond anything I had created before, and the festival experience, although a bit pricey, was cool and interesting. I was inspired, but not in the way that I thought I would be.
The very next day, I started planning what would become the first London version of my film festival organization. We managed to get $2000 sponsorship money from AVID that we needed to register with Withoutabox (the FilmFreeway of the time), and we were away. In our first three months, we had received over 900 films, all on DVD. We hired a local cinema, selected our shorts, and put on the festival. It was a great success. We lost money, but it wasn't enough to ruin us financially, so we ploughed on. However, it always bugged me about having to reject so many films, and I felt that many of the filmmakers we rejected were super similar to me when I was making shorts and who probably weren't necessarily given the same exposure I was to the shorts at Raindance. This really bugged me. And it still does. So, gradually, we built up our business, learning a lot along the way. Like, hiring students to select your films is a really BAD IDEA, hiring unpaid interns to do your social media is a really BAD IDEA, going into a pandemic with an inflated workforce and three offices you can barely afford is a BAD IDEA. Not communicating enough regarding financial strain: BAD. Communicating too often about financial strains: BAD.
However, some of the real positives to come out of running a festival like ours have been that we have seen so many journeys by so many filmmakers, and we have learned loads along the way. From Brian Jordan Alvarez, to Philip Barantini, Jane Gull, and loads more. It is these anecdotes that enable us to help the filmmakers and screenwriters we select to get better insights into the film industry. The film "My Feral Heart" by Jane Gull was going to something called The Marché Du Film, represented by a Goldfinch-sourced sales agency called Movie House. Having heard about this from Jane, we decided to venture into this, and this inquiry really opened our eyes to the world of distribution.
So in 2016, following the film, myself and the other co-founder, my best bud Ben, got accepted into the producer's course at The Cannes Film Festival. It was a two-week long course running parallel with the Cannes Film Festival that included a series of lectures, tours, and demonstrations by industry producers and filmmakers that really exposed us to the world of film markets. We had been running our festival for five years up until this point and had no real understanding of what film markets were or how they operated, but this course, along with the constant updates from the experience that "My Feral Heart" was having, answered a lot of those questions.
We came back from that film market with a new set of indicators. To us, it felt that many filmmakers at the true-indie level, the filmmakers we were selecting and rejecting, had no idea how distribution deals were made, who the players were, what E&O Insurance was, who sales agents are, what a shopping contract is, a sizzle reel, an EPK, the audience numbers, how studios finance ideas, what producers do, or anything else for that matter that covered this next step for a filmmaker in their career.
We learned about the firefighter who, from one email to the national firefighters union, managed to sell his film to a studio and made his film millions. We learned the power of packaging and how shorts could be great proofs of concept for filmmakers, especially when trying to sell at film markets. We learned about Jason Blum, his social media college campus move, which was genius, and how all of this feeds into the power of audience building prior to funding and investment. Such eye-opening information.
Since then, we now attend every major Western film market: Cannes Marché Du Film, EFM, AFM, and we are thinking of heading out to Busan this November, depending on the content we have. We now use our knowledge of those markets to pass on to filmmakers what they should be doing in order to bypass the festival slog and really get their work out there. Philip Barantini's short "Boiling Point"—we took it to the Marché when it was a short as a proof of concept, taking no fee for doing so. It is now a feature film on Netflix and a TV show on the BBC.
So, based on all of this and a lot more experience—I could write this post for days—my advice for any filmmaker looking to the festival circuit is this:
  1. Attend festivals—especially if you don't get in, try and find a way to watch as much stuff from those filmmakers similar to you as possible. Online festivals are way easier to attend regularly.
  2. Find as many opportunities as you can to watch and provide feedback to your peers, or volunteer to be a festival reviewer. Festivals really need you. You don't have to do it for long; you can do it in your own time, and it'll make you a better filmmakescreenwriter.
  3. Watch films coming out of the film markets. Screen International and Variety publish what are called Dailies during the major markets; inside, they run stories on what is being sold and to whom. So look at what is being bought and why. These magazines are the trades of our industry, so become a subscriber.
  4. A producer isn't money. A producer can help find funding (from executive producers), but they need to care about the project and be involved in the creative process, normally from the beginning. We have seen that actors make the best producers. You only have to look at shows like "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"; having an actor as a producer is an excellent move. They can sell. They have a vested interest in the project's success.
  5. You should also consider becoming a producer. Look at all of the recent indie films and TV shows to have made it through from the sub-$100k model; the filmmakers are producing these from conception to completion, building teams and finding their audiences.
  6. Reddit isn't research. Due diligence needs to be diligent when checking out organizations, especially when you are spending your money. The film industry has a lot of deluded people who get a rejection and instantly head to Reddit to hate on organizations or communities they have had maybe 1% experience of. Look beyond that noise, and do your own homework before you spend your cash. The reviews on FilmFreeway are where it's at; look out for reviews that detail each aspect of the festival offering.
  7. You cannot expect just your idea to open the door. This industry is saturated with realistic artists ready to build themselves into something better for the sake of their work and people who are unwilling to listen but believe that the world owes them something. Take care not to fall into the latter; this will take hard work.
  8. We are all people. From the organizations you think are scamming you to the people providing feedback, we have feelings, and each and every single one of us is a potential set of eyes and ears on your film. Feedback, encouragement, investment. Go in steady and sensible, and you never know who might give you a helping hand or even join your team.
  9. Audience is king. As Brian Jordan Alvarez discovered with his YouTube Channel, having a loyal following will help when it comes to sales. His show "The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo," an award winner of ours, found its sale to Lionsgate through YouTube views. The same can be said for the genius format of "High Maintenance" that started off on Vimeo OnDemand and got sold to HBO.
  10. You are not one film.
There is so much more I can add here, but I think that is enough typing for now. I'd love to engage with anyone willing to start a discussion here. Thanks!
James :)

2024.06.04 13:45 Tanwun Does reverting Bannerlord to an old version uncorrupt saves? If not, is there any way to get the data from it?

My save file got corrupted and I haven't played in around a year. Is it possible for me to restore this save file at all? There's like 20 different versions in the betas tab on Steam, so I was wondering if I reverted it to an old one could it uncorrupt the file, or any other way to restore the save file? And if there isn't, are there any programs to help me get the data from it so I can import it in some way to a new save?
I'm mostly worried about the characters I had (my character, and my family tree which I edited their appearances through a mod), so that's my primary concern. Thank you to everyone who replies!

2024.06.04 13:41 Aggressive-Cow5399 What path should I take?

I’m looking for some opinions on what path I should pursue. I’ve been accepted into 2 programs, one is an MS and another is an MBA.
Option 1 - Boston University Part time MBA
Option 2 - Georgia Tech MS in Analytics/Data Science
I currently work in strategy/strategic finance for a SaaS company in Boston. I doing well and am on track to leadership within the next few years. Ideally I want to stay in a strategy type role. I really like working on the revenue side of things and being close to marketing and sales. My undergrad school is not really recognizable and I often get overlooked for FAANG type jobs or bigger name companies, so I feel like either program would afford me better opportunities.
My role is obviously a bit technical. I utilize a lot of software consisting of - PowerBI, Excel, Tableau, etc… The one thing that is clear is that analysis and modeling is the primary component of my job, which I then use to formulate decisions and drive strategy.
The way corporate finance is going is towards a hybrid type role that wants people that can be good with data systems and data analysis and also be good with financial modeling. Basically the role will most likely become more technical over time.
For this reason, I feel like strengthening my technical skills and pursuing a more technical strategy role is one possibility that could open up via the Georgia Tech program. I don’t want to be a full blown data monkey that has no say in strategy, however I want to take what I learn and apply it to my analysis. Not sure what roles I would pursue in this case, but please feel free to comment on that. I also feel that the stem masters is much more valuable than a generic MBA that doesn’t really teach you anything that I don’t already know. I already majored in accounting and econ in undergrad, so another business degree doesn’t seem like it’s worth it in terms of educational value, it would merely for the artificial barriers in the workplace/industry. It’s also important to mention that MBB and BB banks hire from the Georgia Tech program.
The other option is pursue the traditional path and get the MBA. I could either climb the ladder or job hop to a different company for higher $$, T2/T3 consulting, boutique banking, and maybe a product management type role.
Or I could just do both at the same time… the Georgia Tech one is online. Could just take one class for GT and maybe one or two from BU, per semester. I assume most of the business classes won’t be nearly as hard as the GT classes.
Id like to see what you guys think.

2024.06.04 13:35 StructureSpecial7597 Who is your most memorable guest?

Not necessarily the page’s most memorable, but your own favorite/favorite to hate.
Mine is the guest who was clearly only invited last minute because she was related to the primary. She demanded that she have her own room and forced another guest to sleep in the lounge (despite that I think her room had two different beds) she was also a buzzkill the entire charter and complained to no end.
