2024.05.20 01:19 NikkiLinguist Advice on whether to do CS or SWE?

Hey everyone,
I recently graduated with a BA in Business Administration with a focus on Tourism Management. During my time at uni, I discovered an interest for Natural Language Processing (NLP), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML). However, by the time I realized this, I was too far into my degree to change my major, so I decided to finish my BA.
Since then, I've been self-teaching and have developed a good grasp of programming and coding fundamentals. Although I'm confident in my skills, I feel that having a formal degree in Computer Science (CS) or Software Engineering (SWE) would look good on my resume and give me boost, especially given the current competitive job market in tech.
I’ve found some reputable online programs for both CS and SWE, but I'm unsure which path would be more beneficial for my career goals in NLP, AI, and ML. I hope others majoring or those that have majored in these fields are able to share their insight/experience, especially if they come from a non traditional background like myself.
Thanks in advance for your help!

2024.05.20 00:13 computer_WD40 Looking to get back in the game after a bit. Hoping to land a SysAdmin position for an MSP

About to send out an email, and I would like to get a second set of eyes on my email and resume:
To whom it may concern:
I came across your recent post on CraigsList and thought that I would be a perfect fit for your company. I have been a one-man IT department for over 10 years and have been responsible for all the same core-competencies as Tech Company.
As you can guess, I have had to do everything from vacuuming out desktop boxes to automating company processes to learning new technologies to implement into our processes. To highlight some of my achievements, when we started to need Macbooks I learned about Apple and Mobile Device Managers (MDM) to manage our assets. When the quarantine lockdown loomed, I was able to leverage the pfSense to provide our users access to our on premise storage that day. I deployed the VPN client and the user credentials via MDM and ensured that everyone was trained and ready the next day. I have learned to connect any data to any application to do anything.
I really feel like I can really be a superstar at Tech Company and I'm really excited for the opportunity to work there.

2024.05.19 23:46 Unique_Mud_5328 how can i improve my stats in my junior summer before college?

i’m a junior in highschool ready to apply for college. i really want to get into berkeley for cs major but it’s getting super competitive. these are my stats and i was just wondering what yall think i can improve on during summer, to just slightly boost up my chances to get in. And i also want to know what other colleges that have good cs programs that i could aim for.
first gen/asian/female/low income family
my stats: 4.72/4.00 Acad weighted gpa; 4.00 unweighted
APs: my school has a healthy limit for aps each year so mine is capped: AP bio (5), AP chinese (5), AP chem (5), AP CSA, AP Calculus BC, AP physics 1, AP Physics C Mechanics(most likely 5/4 for most)
SAT: 1450 but im gonna take another one in august hopefully i get 1500+
summer programs: awesomemath, a summer leadership academy, girls who code summer program
Internships: this summer at a software company, and i’m also a tech intern at this mental health educational platform
Leaderships: ap chem TA, tutor at my math club at school, club coordinator for fyla, social media manager for environment club, and most likely vice president for my econ club
ECs) -2 personal coding projects -1 coding project has a research paper involved that will be published - berkeley math tournament honorable mention - outstanding student of the year (1 in 800 students in my grade) - Presidential volunteer service award gold -2nd in a small coding project competition - USACO gold - science olympiad team state qualifier - gamegala a coding comp semifinals - uscno chemistry team placed 6th in regional - berkeley chemistry tournament team top 3 - 1st place at a small math comp - National economics challenge but my team was placed 9th which was so close to quad ting for states😭

2024.05.19 23:33 No_Age6966 New WFH Setup Needed

New to working from home, need some recommendations on a Windows laptop that can handle lots of web browsing, Adobe Creative Suite, and video conferencing. I'll be setting up a docking station of some sort, big or multiple monitors, sit/stand. Need recommendations on all items to buy - willing to spend more when it's worth it but definitely price conscious.
Mostly it'll be used at home so not particular on battery life, durability, or even the size/quality of the screen (I plan to hook it up to a docking station with multiple monitors or a widescreen 4K monitor for any serious design projects).
Upgradable if possible (my boyfriend is way more knowledgeable and can upgrade RAM and graphics card, so if I can get a good deal on a Frankenstein device, that works!)

2024.05.19 23:31 Honest-Sheepherder-3 struggling CS student need help

My fellow CS folks, I need guidance on coding practices, particularly regarding the use of AI assistant tools. While solving Leetcode problems, I try to come up with solutions by myself. However, when working on projects or academic assignments, I often rely on AI tools. I use them to generate code which I then tweak and refine. Is this approach detrimental to my development as a coder? Should I strive to originate code on my own outside of Leetcode exercises?
Moreover, people in major tech firms have expressed concerns about using AI tools due to the potential risks of exposing proprietary code to external training datasets. This has raised doubts in my mind about whether I am cultivating sound coding habits.
What truly defines a proficient programmer? Is it the ability to write every line of code independently, the capability to create flawless applications, or the knowledge of designing robust systems? What should be my focus to enhance my programming skills?

2024.05.19 23:19 AcornRoots1465 Is this code plagiarism - going towards publication?

I am working on a pipeline that my lab wants to publish, and from which the original creators of the pipeline have moved on.
Unfortunately it had no documentation which is now what much of my work entails.
I have discovered that much of the code has been copied and pasted from open source code, and code from similar projects at other labs. There is no differentiation between the external code and code implemented by my lab. Much of the copy & pasted code even has no reference to its external source either.
As a recent CS grad, I was taught that this would be considered plagiarism...am I wrong?

2024.05.19 22:38 KhumaChann Help me Whit a capacitive censor :(

Hello im doing this tutorial: https://www.mrelectrouino.com/2019/08/arduino-piano-diy-conductive-paint.html
but in my arduino dosent seem to work ill leave the code that im using
The point that it is on the numeric keyboard and not on the normal keys is due to the fact that it is a whack a mole type game in Unity and the numbers that appear are to select the positions in a 3x3 matrix
where the ground, as my teacher explained to me, must be connected to a hammer to pass the energy and to detect the hit more easily.
#include  #include  // Configuración de los sensores capacitivos CapacitiveSensor cs_12_3 = CapacitiveSensor(12, 3); CapacitiveSensor cs_12_4 = CapacitiveSensor(12, 4); CapacitiveSensor cs_12_5 = CapacitiveSensor(12, 5); CapacitiveSensor cs_12_6 = CapacitiveSensor(12, 6); CapacitiveSensor cs_12_7 = CapacitiveSensor(12, 7); CapacitiveSensor cs_12_8 = CapacitiveSensor(12, 8); CapacitiveSensor cs_12_9 = CapacitiveSensor(12, 9); CapacitiveSensor cs_12_10 = CapacitiveSensor(12, 10); CapacitiveSensor cs_12_11 = CapacitiveSensor(12, 11); // Nuevo sensor para la tecla 9 void setup() { // Inicializar la comunicación Serial Serial.begin(9600); } void loop() { long touch1 = cs_12_3.capacitiveSensor(30); Serial.println(touch1); long touch2 = cs_12_4.capacitiveSensor(15); long touch3 = cs_12_5.capacitiveSensor(15); long touch4 = cs_12_6.capacitiveSensor(20); long touch5 = cs_12_7.capacitiveSensor(20); long touch6 = cs_12_8.capacitiveSensor(20); long touch7 = cs_12_9.capacitiveSensor(20); long touch8 = cs_12_10.capacitiveSensor(20); long touch9 = cs_12_11.capacitiveSensor(20); // Lectura del nuevo sensor // Cuando se toca el sensor, enviar una tecla y mostrar en Serial. if (touch1 > 0) { Serial.println("1-------"); } if (touch2 > 1000) { Serial.println("2"); } if (touch3 > 1000) { Serial.println("3"); } if (touch4 > 1000) { Serial.println("4"); } if (touch5 > 1000) { Serial.println("5"); } if (touch6 > 1000) { Serial.println("6"); } if (touch7 > 1000) { Serial.println("7"); } if (touch8 > 1000) { Serial.println("8"); } if (touch9 > 1000) { Serial.println("9"); } } The difference is that im using aluminum not conductive paint so idk why i dosent work and i dk what to do since im a noob in all this stuff pls help me print: 14:58:23.518 -> -2 14:58:34.435 -> -2 14:58:45.444 -> -2 14:58:56.415 -> -2 14:59:07.350 -> -2 14:59:18.318 -> -2 And i did the same conections and everything but still dosent work

2024.05.19 22:28 Outrageous_Minute283 Separation Studio NXT

Just purchased separation studio NXT, NXT Moves as well as AccuRIP Emerald. Forgive me if these sound like stupid questions, I am 67 and not a computer whiz. When I Save as in SSNXT it only gives me the option to save as a Photoshop File (*.psd). Does this mean I have to purchase Photoshop? I currently have Adobe Illustrator. If I Export from SSNXT it saves to a DCS 2.0 File (*.eps) I cannot open these in Illustrator. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2024.05.19 22:21 christina______ if you left the design field, what are you doing now?

Just curious. I've lurked on here a bit and see a lot of thoughtful responses coming from dismayed people.
I graduated around 20 years ago with a media studies degree. I initially started out as an art major, but switched out after ending up in a really bad graphic design course. The teacher basically walked around, didn't give real feedback, no critiques, no resources. I was interested, but wasn't particularly talented. Just....had a good eye, like a lot of people do. Loved the art history. But as far as GD, I felt like I was working very hard to come up with concepts while actually producing very little of value. Nothing I was particularly proud of. I didn't want to be another cookie cutter designer at best.
Yet it was kind of a hard decision. Fortunately, the school I transferred to also had hands-on multimedia courses under the media studies program so I got my creative fix, and I wanted to work on websites anyway. The idea of doing impractical studio art courses was weighing me down, and I was finally free of that.
I've had a lot of bad, underpaid jobs myself over the years, but also a lot of great (and well known) clients. Mostly doing content management (boring, too easy), front end coding (exhausting at times), some writing/editing, a fair amount of Photoshop for the web. But I really didn't start getting paid decently until after age 30. Y'all are not alone.
I think a few years ago, I was finally at peace and happy with my college decision. I was back at a real gig after the pandemic and learned that my product owneproject manager boss was making the mockups in Figma. No real background in design. I used Canva for a few things. I even watched a talented designer get laid off and openly worry about money.
Design doesn't seem to be a valued field anymore, unless maybe you move up and play nice in a corporate setting where people will pay you decently and value your input. Of course, it takes a certain person to do that, and I don't think most truly creative folks fit the bill.
However, neither does front-end development, especially with AI growing in popularity. I'm scared of the prospect of less remote work, more competition for remote work, and more 'creative project manager / producer' jobs/tasks ....with all the annoying software that comes with it.

2024.05.19 22:15 Canikpanik Art in 10 min

Art in 10 min
Did this last night from random paint drops, in about 10 min. Context - I’m an event designer, proficient in powerpoint, photoshop, sketchup, adobe art apps (fresco and all that stuff). I usually sketch, and thats my favorite form of expression… well, WAS until I played around with acrylic last night!
Got a hold of some acrylic, at first I hated it and wanted to go back to sketching lol but then I started just randomly dropping blobs, seeing where it led me… and I got here. This is my usual creative process, I just let my brain take control, relax and try to guide it. For example. I can ALWAYS find faces in everything I draw or paint so I like to elaborate on them.
Let me know if this is even worth continuing! I have a couple more but I can’t stop looking at this one!
This scratches my brain in some many ways lol. Do you think it’s worth continuing or worth buying?

2024.05.19 22:01 Mean_Efficiency_9947 Anxious about my chosen CS major and future job prospects

I’m currently a senior in high school, and I’m nervous as hell about majoring in CS. I never had any experience with coding in school and never took CS-related APs either. The only reason why I chose CS is because graduates often have strong job prospects with a CS degree (also the fact that I’ve no clue what I want to major in) and I want to start making money asap after I graduate with a bachelor’s. However, it seems that the market is oversaturated with many graduates unable to land jobs solely with a CS degree. I want to ask if it’s still worth it for me to pursue CS. I heard the major is rigorous and is mostly theoretical and doesn’t involve much coding. I’m not sure if I do well with theories…Should I pursue SE instead? I’m still interested in coding and plan on learning one lang (either python or java) before I move onto campus. Maybe I should give CS a try before switching? But I’m really not sure if I want to pursue a major in a field that’s highly competitive and oversaturated in the job market. However, BU is ranked ten for employability—that makes me feel a little better ig.
