2024.05.06 16:22 Skillet007 Credit card options for government employees?

I have used this sub for years but never posted. I'm a government employee that travels more than 75% of the year. I normally use a gov travel card to book travel, and my card is reimbursed by the agency after the travel.
I have the option to redeem points for flights or hotels. I drive more than I fly, but I've still accrued close to a combined 1,000,000 hotel points between IHG and Hilton. I don't fly often, but when I do, I choose American and get points with them. I want to start using my own CC to really benefit from all of my travel. Hotel points are nice, but there really isn't much value to them, and I think that using my own CC for my job would give me much more value.
I have looked at CC's for a while, but I'm afraid to get one without knowing more of how they work. The biggest hurdle for me is that I have to book my travel through the agency booking portal. This almost always guarantees that I'll be within my per diem rates because there is an agreement built into the reservation system we use. However, I've seen that many cards require you to book or purchase through their own portals in order to maximize their values or even qualify for points in some cases.
I was leaning on the Chase Sapphire because I've heard good things about it, but I don't want to pigeonhole myself if there's a better option for my situation. I am hoping other government employees could chime in, but I'm sure there is a lot of information I can glean from the rest of the community.
I don't have much experience using credit cards for rewards, but I do have a lot of credit card experience. My credit score is in the excellent range, so I'm ready to make my job work for me a little more, if I can.

2024.05.05 10:20 Gracielou_Freebush_ Let them eat cake

Let them eat cake
Writing this from my room, as I reflect over the events of the night. We came to Hotel Indigo in El Paso, Tx to celebrate my sister’s engagement. It’s 6 total women aging from 32-60. We booked 3 double bed rooms. We had envisioned just hanging by the pool to hang out and ordered a cake from my sister’s favorite bakery. Later we found out that there was going to be a DJ at the pool from 4pm-12 am. We asked if we needed to reserve space and they said “no, it was first come first serve.” So we thought it wouldn’t be a problem. Around 3 pm we were told that we needed to order bottle service in order to stay in our spot at it would be - $200/ bottle and a minimum of 3 bottles. We were completely taken aback, after being told something completely different. After speaking with management they told us that they had been advertising this event and that we should have known this was occurring. (Never did they send an email letting us know that it would effect the pool hours.) We expressed to them that we were staying at that hotel because we were celebrating my sister’s upcoming marriage. To that they said that if we were having a celebration we should have told them because events at their hotel start at $1,200. Again, there was only 6 of us women - I would hardly think it was something needing an event space. Finally, the management said that we could stay in the space off to the side of the pool area in a far corner. As the evening progressed it started to turn into a night club, and they started to put up velvet ropes and brought in security. Later I went up to my room and brought down a 9 in cake for my sister and the security let us bring it in, but then mins later the management came and told us that we weren’t allowed to have outside cake. They said it was hotel policy and that if we didn’t like it we could check out of the hotel and stay elsewhere. I started getting the feeling as if we weren’t wanted, because we aren’t in our 20’s and fit their target demographic. It didn’t sit right with me the way that we were spoken to so I immediately called IHG customer service to see if this was the case. They said that each hotel has their own policies, and encouraged me to ask the hotel for a copy of their policy.
I did just that and included a copy of their policy as an attachment to this thread. As I was waiting for the copy one of the employees said that “We were told that we could not bring cake into the area, and that it was rude of us to do so. They were considering kicking us out of the hotel because we broke hotel policy, and again encouraged us to check out.” After she said that I started recording our conversation, because I could not believe my ears. I told her that I’ve would gladly follow hotel policy if they could show me in writing that outside food was not allowed in the pool area. Two employees started to scramble and went to the back and came back with a make-shift policy (also attached). This new policy only had a blurb about alcoholic beverages - again it was cake that was the issue! When I brought this up the manager said that they did not have to show us any further policies to indicate that we were out of line. Next thing you know the people next to us bring out a birthday cake, and tons of people start singing Happy Birthday! At that moment the manager said that we could have our cake too.
We spent so much time arguing with management over something so trivial that it completely ruined my sister’s special moment in life. The ugly feeling that the staff made us feel was that we weren’t wanted and that we were bothersome. I am dreading having to interact with them during check out. What would you do in this situation to make it right?

2024.05.02 07:21 ReactionGlass4899 New Scam Alert for IHG Employees

**NEW HOTEL SCAM ALERT for EMPLOYEES**
I am here to unfortunately report our HIE got hit with a new scam. We are very accustomed to the Patel's, but this was impressive, and I have to share the details as I still can't wrap my head around it. So, one of my longest/trusted employees and Opera system expert, In my opinion at least- (I trained her myself) was working overnight audit and got a call around 630am last week. They guy stated he was from the IHG IT department and there was a scheduled system update for Opera. She did the right thing and asked who scheduled it and when and he mentioned our head Engineer by name and stated 24 hours prior. She said he had a southern accent and was super nice and polite. She asked him how long the system would be down as her shift ended soon and she knew she would have some early check-outs coming down- he said only about 10mins they were going to be resetting and testing the CC pin pad system. It was known to all front desk employees that the pin pad system did indeed crash about 24 hours prior and our Engineer did make a call to troubleshoot.
So she moved forward with the call and he literally walked her through the Opera system STEP BY STEP-literally telling her what tab to click on, using all the correct terms. Knew how to instruct to open a new window for folios- used the term FOLIO. So he told her he had virtual CCs that were going to be tested in the PINPAD and he had her enter -2345.67 into window 2, Gave her a reference number for transaction. Once she did that she immediately stopped and had a feeling something was off. She lied to the guy and said she had a guest at the desk and needed to put him on hold, she was smart and before she did that- she asked for His name, his title and a direct contact number in case they got disconnected. She put him on hold and called the Assistant General Manager who would be the appropriate chain of command call as she was to arrive at 7am anyways. She ran the entire scenario by the AGM- who reiterated that the pinpad system did go down 24 hours prior, the Engineer did make a call to troubleshoot and acknowledged that this called had the engineers name and that info it seemed legit.......my Night Auditor even went as far to googling the name she was given and found a LinkedIn page with his name and being an IHG employee. CRAZY!!! The AGM basically gave her the go ahead to complete whatever he was having her do-which sucks SO BAD. So what ended up happening was 6 transactions total 2 on each station with a pin pad. Each transaction for -2345.67 Each terminal one with a Visa and one with a Mastercard "to test" the pin pad processing system. Again, a reference number was given by him for each transaction. He had her pick 3 guests that were due out 24 hours later and open a 2nd window on their billing folio's so the guests payment etc...was unaffected whatsoever If you are Opera users. The only other way I would see to do this would have been through a PM account I guess. After 1 Visa and 1 MC on each he then had her hit the "Check button" which still confuses me- so that then created $0.00 balance settling the "transactions" out. As much I know the Opera system, I still can't process how they got $15,000 out of doing it that way, but it scary as clearly this has to have been a former employee of somewhere who is an Opera expert. I am still in shock. The conversation ended with him stating he would call back in less than 12 hours with a report on how the system ran and gave her an IT TICKET number!!!!!
She printed out all the folios and passed them to the AGM on her arrival- Unfortunately nothing was said to any other employee about it!! I did not find out until 24 hours later when my GM approached me about her getting calls about the transactions and I pulled up the reports myself and then called the NA employee and she told me where the folios she printed were and the documentation of the guy's name, title and phone number he gave. I am happy to share the guy's name that he used if anyone would like- the LinkedIn profile is still up as I went and searched it myself- obviously that is NOT the man who called but who he pretended to be. And regretfully, because 24 hours passed before anyone else found out about it- the transactions could not be stopped at the time of finding. I am not sure what is happening behind the scenes as this is still a current investigation. The employee is 100% NOT involved whatsoever, so this is NOT an inside job/scam.
I am usually the one who makes all the IT calls and submits tickets etc. and does the remote working with the IT department, but I happened to be off the day the pin pad system crashed so I didn't even know that happened or that anyone made a call. The engineer is new to us, but we are sharing him from our sister hotel down the street and he is a super long term trusted employee as well.
Has anyone heard of this happening ever??? Would you have immediately thought it was a scam as well or would you have possibly fallen for it as well??? Any input is welcome as long as it is not bashing the employee who is the victim of the scam. She is absolutely mortified about it and is emotionally really struggling with being taken advantage of as I would expect to be a normal human reaction.

2024.04.28 04:13 Ronnieb85 Guest says they booked through IHG but reservation came through from Priceline.

This is for the IHG employees. I just recently started working for IHG but have been in hospitality for a long time so I'm familiar with most things but this has me baffled.
Tonight I checked in a guest and the reservation came through from Priceline with a VCC attached. I confirmed details with the guest but they had asked if there was a lower rate available. I said that unfortunately due to the reservation being made on an OTA and had a VCC attached there was nothing I was able to do and reiterated this is a good reason why guests should book directly with the property and not through OTA's.
The guest then got upset saying she called the 1-800 number for IHG directly and swears she booked direct but everything about the reservation says it came from Agoda aka Priceline, even has an agoda email attached. Does central reservations for IHG use Priceline to make reservations on behalf of the guest or did the guest just think she booked direct and didn't, this one has me stumped.

2024.04.17 01:21 MainAsparagus6220 Considering Ambassador

I am an IHG employee and looking for some ways to advance my travel experiences. If I plan out a stay very carefully, I can easily get the hookup from knowing people at properties around the world. But I plan on doing a lot of traveling this summer and next and w plat status it seems like it would improve my experiences.
I have an ok amount of points (150k) and I have a good amount of credit cards and I’m not looking to add the IHG card to my rotation. Can anyone give me personal advice if I should get it, it’s only 200 bucks or 40k points (I would pay w points probably). Also do I have to pay 200 or 40k points per calendar year to retain the status, or can I just stay a certain amount of nights? Please lmk if I should elaborate on anything.

2024.03.17 03:36 biowiz RFID - Ultralight C - and general security

Any hotels out there ensuring they are not using MIFARE Classic 1k keys or fobs?
I saw a notice from brand that these are vulnerable to duplication (saw The Killer recently and that topic caught my eye). Ultralight C was recommended. However, I'm sure the keycards we have are not of that type. They do not seem to be very common yet. The Onity brand ones just say "Ultralight" on the back. And the new ones we got are branded with no indication of the type (Deluxe keycards).
We are looking to buy RFID fob/keychain type "keys" and I'm dealing with a dilemma as to which ones to buy. Someone recommended these classic 1k ones, but I'm a little paranoid about security. The same "company" sells MIFARE Ultralight C ones for double the price, which isn't a big deal. But I wanted to see if it was worth it and if there's even a way to verify their authenticity.
I think if an employee left a mastehousekeeping fob somewhere then we're already screwed. However, the bigger concern is if someone secretly copied a maid key or manager key and no one knows then we wouldn't be able to immediately use a cancel card to cancel access to that particular master key type/person.

2024.02.25 01:35 joinkudos Weekly Credit Card Roundup - Week of 2/19/24

Weekly Credit Card Roundup - Week of 2/19/24
Capital One Set to Acquire Discover for $35B in Biggest Deal of 2024 (So Far)
Will the deal really go through?
The headline of the week broke on Presidents’ Day, Monday, February 19: Capital One is set to purchase Discover for a staggering $35 billion! This merger will bring together two of the biggest credit card issuers in the United States. It's a bold investment in the credit card market, which has flourished due to lucrative rewards programs and the ongoing transition to online shopping. Through this acquisition, Capital One will gain access to Discover's payment network, an essential system that links banks with a variety of merchants, from major retail outlets to independent stores, to facilitate credit or debit card purchases. Like American Express, Discover is notable for being one of the few U.S. issuers that manage their own payment network outside of Visa and Mastercard. As the nation's ninth-largest bank and a significant player with 100 million customers, Capital One's acquisition of Discover allows it to process transactions over an independent network, potentially diversifying its revenue sources and streamlining costs.
But will the deal go through? The proposed deal has to pass federal regulatory scrutiny and it’ll be a long road ahead. It’s unclear what will happen to the Discover portfolio of cards, even though Capital One claims it’ll keep the brands separate. Even if the acquisition goes through, Capital One doesn't expect the deal to close until late 2024 or early 2025. We’ll make sure to track it and how it’ll change the rewards landscape of credit cards.

As reported in Doctor of Credit, three major U.S. airlines have increased their baggage fees recently.
United Airlines

  • Now $40 for first bag and $50 for second bag when booked within 24 hours before departure
The new policy is effective for tickets purchased on or after Saturday, February 24, 2024.
These United credit cards waive the baggage fee, potentially saving you hundreds of dollars every year:
American Airlines
  • Now $40 for the first bag and $50 for the second bag
  • Flights within and between the United States, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands are all affected by the price increase
The new policy is effective for tickets purchased on or after Tuesday, February 26, 2024.

jetBlue
  • Now $35 for first bag and $50 for second bag when booked more than 24 hours before departure
  • Now $45 for first bag and $60 for second bag when booked within 24 hours before departure
As of February, 1, 2024, JetBlue has updated its checked baggage fee chart for flights within the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean, for passengers who check in within 24 hours of departure. These travelers will now pay $45 and $60 for the first and second checked bags, an extra $10 from the base rates.

2024.02.11 03:55 plha007 Percentage of status guests

A few days ago I’ve saw a post about how many guests at some Marriott properties are status guests. A employee stated that at his property sometimes more than 50% having the second highest tier (Titanium), than more than 10% with the highest one, a huge number with the gold tier and only a little bit more than 10% are not member in their loyalty program.
I saw before a list of one Hilton hotel. Most of the guests which booked directly at Hilton are also Diamond and Gold members. This was at least half of the list. The rest of the bookings came from Booking.com.
Anybody aware about the numbers at IHG? Maybe someone working in the industry? Maybe with some basics about the property (business hotel, luxury,…)

2024.02.06 15:25 Good-Ad7066 employee discount question

My stepdad works for IHG resorts and my sister and I want to utilize his full employee discount if we are able to. I’ve called to a few resorts and they say that he has to be there upon check in to be able to utilize the employee rate discount, but is there a workaround with this? Is he able to add me to the reservation somehow so he doesn’t need to be there when checking in? Any help is appreciated!

2024.01.08 19:49 JayJayHI2000 Updates From a Churning Addict

This post is an update to my original post from March 2022 as prompted by u/jrh590 and hopefully, some of the new information can be of value to folks here.
Yet another word of caution-- if you decide to pick up churning, ensure that you are willing to invest the time necessary to develop a plan and to understand what exactly you are doing. I have continued to learn over the past two years, although some of the lessons learned have come in the form of missed opportunities.
Following my successes during the second half of 2021 and the first three months of 2022, I continued my churning journey by pursuing Amex SUBs having hit 5/24 through my early efforts with Chase. Through 2022 I picked up the Charles Schwab Platinum at 100k MR, the Morgan Stanley Platinum at 125k MR, the Delta Reserve (made from real 747 metal!) at 100k SkyMiles, and the Bonvoy Brilliant at 150k Bonvoy points. P2 picked up the same, with cross referrals for the Delta and Marriot cards. Towards the end of 2022, I decided I would need to slow down on personal cards so that I could eventually get back under 5/24. Before ending my Amex spree, I picked up a couple more Hilton Aspires and another Platinum card for each of us, all without SUB but with referral bonuses from each other.
At the end of 2022, I got my first Amex business card, a Business Gold card with a 160k MR SUB for $10k MSR in three months. That proved to be beneficial beyond the SUB because I started getting offers for the Business Platinum card without the normal lifetime language (NLL). Over the following year, I got another Biz Gold and two more Biz Plats, plus a Biz Gold and two Biz Plats for P2. At some point in that year, I learned about employee cards, and so we have been raking in MRs at a pretty ridiculous pace as a result. My current method has been to get new Biz Plats with NLL (usually 150k offers for $15k spend) and then add on 4-5 employee cards at either 15k or 20k MR each (depending on the offer at the time) for $4k spend each. This means that for $16k MSR I can hit 210-230k MR at least once every three months using our organic spend as long as the NLL Biz Plat offers keep coming, all without affecting my personal credit report.
Starting in September 2022 I had some significant monthly rent expenses start, and so when I was able I applied for the Bilt Mastercard and was approved. I did not receive the (normal at that time) starting offer of a multiplier on all purchases for the first few days, but I did take advantage of the point on rent that the card offered. In August 2023 those expenses stopped, but I still find myself using the Bilt card on rent day and for dining at restaurants that are part of Bilt dining or that don't accept Amex.
P2 and I also enjoyed several redemptions, along with a couple that included our kids. I estimate the value of the redemptions in 2022 was about $30k, with the value of redemptions in 2023 even higher at somewhere near $40k. We have one trip scheduled for March of this year and another templated for August. We are also sitting on a large cache of Amex MR points, have refined our redemption strategies, and are planning a large redemption at the end of 2024 including international travel (both economy and business class) and stays at several very nice hotels.
Our current setup, aggregated between me and P2, is: 8 Amex Platinums (including CS & MS), 5 Biz Plats, 2 Biz Golds, 2 Amex Golds, 7 Aspires, 2 Brilliants, 1 Delta Reserve, 2 Sapphire Reserves, 2 United Clubs, 2 United Quests, 1 IHG Premier, 1 World of Hyatt, 1 Citi DoubleCash, 1 Citi Rewards+, and 1 Bilt card. Total annual fees for currently held cards are $18,559 all except for $4,065 waived for us because of my active duty military status. Total credits from our cards are $14,780 per year plus 11 free hotel nights (7 Hilton, 2 Marriott, 1 IHG, and 1 Hyatt).
Finally, I'll repeat the words of caution from my original post: Churning is not for everyone and is a terrible idea if you carry a balance or are starting from anything less than good credit. Do not spend more than you otherwise would just to hit a SUB (although there are methods to redistribute the timing of your spending without spending more overall). Even common knowledge can be wrong, so take all churning advice with a grain of salt. If you aren't active military, you'll have to pay a lot in annual fees to get the cards that I got-- it might be worthwhile to stay under 5/24 longer because most Chase cards have fees of $99 or less. Check and double-check all offers before applying and ensure that you have a plan to hit the MSR so that you can earn the SUB.
While the Amex Platinum was my favorite card two years ago and remains one of my favorites, I now consider the Hilton Aspire card to carry the most value as a keeper card overall despite the recently increased annual fee and shuffling of credits. For those with enough organic spend and below 5/24, the Chase Ink Cash/Unlimited are worth a look with no annual fee and a nice stack of Chase URs for their SUBs along with the ability to get a new one every couple of months or so.

2024.01.03 02:16 csphelps IHG credit card as an employee

I am an IHG employee (FDS) and also happen to be going on a trip in about 6 weeks. I’m staying in an IHG hotel using the employee discount and some points I’ve accrued as an employee. I was wondering if getting the IHG credit card tends to be good for IHG employees. These travel expenses will definitely qualify me for the sign-up bonus points and I would be promoted to Platinum status. I do not travel much as of now but I am committed to hospitality as a career so I expect I will travel more in the future. That being said, it is entirely possible that I will end up working for a different hotel within the next couple years and possibly not be working for IHG anymore. I am worried I would end up closing the card account if I end up moving to another brand since I would be using the employee benefits there instead + not wanting to pay the annual fee for a card I may not use anymore. Is it worth it to get the card now or go for a more general use credit card?
Posted this elsewhere, just looking for opinions on travel credit cards. Thanks guys.

2024.01.02 08:32 mysweethrowaway77 My IHG employee rate no longer shows up in app

I still work for IHG. Just last week I was looking at employee rates on the app without issue. Tonight, I try to do the same thing and the employee rate option doesnt even show up anymore. What could the reason for that be? Does it reset on the new year? Thanks

2023.12.28 01:52 kayfreakyfresh Compensation for Employee Fault

I stayed 3 nights at a luxury IHG resort recently, had a mishap due to an employee at the resort, and subsequently complained via the hotel survey. The hotel took ~2 weeks to respond, ultimately offering me 25k points when the resort costs ~$2K per night.
In short, I'm a younger female who chose to go back to my room separately from my party. The resort has golf carts/drivers to bus guests around from their rooms to/from the common areas. I hopped in a buggy alone, had some normal polite conversation with the driver, who after dropping me off at my room, invited himself in to stay with me. The driver ultimately left and no transgressions occurred, however I was uncomfortable/scared at the time of the incident and remained uncomfortable throughout my stay, worried I would run into him again.
The hotel offered me 25k in points. I didn't complain while at the resort out of fear of retaliation/animosity as there is a small staff, low guest count, and many relatives working at the resort.
This just seems like an extremely meager amount of compensation, although it may be "the most the resort is allowed to offer for recovery", it seems like something you'd offer for a case of food poisoning or poor housecleaning... not an employee making a sexual advance.
Am I asking too much, being presumptive? How would you go about the situation?

Does anyone have a link to the IHG employee catalog with physical products? My coworker is going through the training but we cannot seem to figure out how to actually access it.
