2024.05.19 21:20 KyraaaB Trying to get credit together while about to get new apartment

Hello, I am 22F and I’m about to start applying for new apartment with my boyfriend 25m Here’s my situation
I make: 61,740 (due to my recent raise, I use to make 54,090)
My credit score just dropped again to: 486 My boyfriends credit is in the 600
The only reason my score is this low is due to me not paying my credit cards down and I had a $242 collection from an apartment which is paid in full now but doesn’t do much for my credit.
I have two capital one credit cards total is: 1,399.05 My other credit cards are at: 1st one: :169.09 - paying this off next week 2nd one: 659.34
Total in credit card debt is: 2,227.48 (I will be able to pay $900 dollars off next week) I also have $1,500 in student loans And $3,422 in auto loans
Capital one restricted my account and on credit karma reported it as closed account which also lowered my credit. I haven’t gotten in touch with capital one to see what we can do.
I worried I will be denied for a new apartment due to my score being low and having technical “2 closed accounts” I can pay all my credit card off by next month but the only reason I can’t do that is because next month savings are going towards the new apartment we get. I have to be out of my current apartment by July 14th.
The reason for us moving is due to my drive to work being a 37-50 minute drive and it’s too much. We plan on living 15 minutes away from my job. I just don’t know what I should do. I was thinking about getting a loan to pay all the debt and just pay month on that but I don’t know if it will boost my credit? Also my boyfriend makes 2400 in monthly dues and this will be his first time renting even tho his credit is 600 I don’t know how much it will help the approval odds. This is my first time renting with someone else and actually putting their name on an application/lease. I need some sort of advice. I don’t know maybe I’m being a little dramatic but this whole thing gives me anxiety.

2024.05.19 21:15 HygenicTetanus Do transfer applications to competitive colleges want the same level of involvement as freshman applications?

Hello I will be going to community college for a year for financial purposes despite my admission to a few competitive colleges across the country. I plan on transferring out after my first year and was wondering if transfer applications differ from freshman applications in any way. Does extracurricular involvement still play a significant role in admission decisions? Are we allowed to list extracurriculars that we were involved in during high school and plan to continue after graduating? I want to know if I should spend my free time pursuing extracurricular involvement if the benefits are significant on a transfer application, if not, It would be better to have a part-time job while I am a student. I'm wondering which choice I should make.

2024.05.19 21:12 One-Career-516 Advice needed for new flat checks

Hi guys, this is going to be a long one so buckle in.
I’m going to talk about my recent renting experience. This is the first time i’ve rented a property so here’s how it went…
A week ago I found a 1 bed flat I liked, went to see it twice and put my application down for it. Got my keys on the Friday, took videos/pictures of any marks on walls/doors/cabinets etc before I moved in and started to move some boxes in on friday. On the same evening my sister noticed she was bitten on arm but I just disregarded it.
On Monday I was on the sat on the floor with my partner building some ikea furniture when I noticed some black dots (around 5-7) on this piece of fabric that was on the floor. This fabric comes with the vanity unit I was building from Ikea. I looked closer only to my horror that these were BUGS. To be precise these were fleas. It all made sense how my sister was bitten on her arm. By the time I had found out it was already around 8pm, me and my partner went to the closest shop to get more cleaning products/disposable mop etc to clean all around the skirting boards, hoover the skirting boards, hoover the room and mop each room. I was in such a state of horror and stress because they were in every room bouncing around, I was so disgusted. I took videos and pictures of every room. We spent HOURS cleaning the flat and finished at almost midnight.
The same night I messaged the landlord of what had happened and he comes back and tells me he will put a flea bomb in the flat. The same evening I went to see if it had done anything and I still saw some fleas alive. I also noticed on the radiator grill there was fur like substance which I mentioned that to the landlord and he didn’t address it. (Pets are not allowed in any of these flats). The radiators were so filthy and dirty inside and when I looked behind it the previous tenants underwear was left behind covered in dust. Whoever the previous tenants were had obviously forgotten this there plus the maintenance men did not really do thorough job cleaning.
I tried to limit myself going into the flat but if I did when I came back to my family home I had to throw all my clothes into a hot wash, shower, wash my hair, throw my bedding in the wash, hoover my room, empty the hoover out etc. I was in a constant state of paranoia because I was scared I will end up brining these fleas into my family home.
The landlord was then blaming me saying I could have brought them in on myself or on my furniture. I mentioned I, or my family/partner do not own pets neither have been around any pets recently. I told him all the furniture i’ve taken in has been brought brand new from the store, nothing had been used. Luckily the new sofa, bed and mattress had been delayed in delivery but I put a hault on that. If that had been delivered any earlier into the flea invested flat I would have had a mental breakdown.
He then said they are going to call pest control and I wont be able to clean/hoovewipe anything for 4-5 weeks basically meaning the flat is not in a habitable state.
He said his maintenance men were in the flat cleaning / painting before I had moved in and they did not get bitten and it only started when I moved in.
He then gave me 2 options.
Option 1: -Out of goodwill they return half the months rent to me. -Cover the cost of extermination -If the fleas return within 6 months, they do a 2nd treatment but my rent will stay the same.
Option 2: -Tenancy will be dissolved in 2 days. - Any remaining rent is refunded - Tenant will need to pay £350 exterminator fees/ letting / vacancy fees. - Deposit returned.
Now, anyone in their right mind would want to leave from this place, it was my way out from this week of HELL and i took option 2. There is no chance I would stay there miserable and in constant paranoia for the whole tenancy, I would be trapped.
I had argued that I also payed £65 on their smart utility meter and I wanted it refunded so he then reduced it from £350 to £300. I had mentioned the pet fur on the radiator for the 2nd time and he did not address it AGAIN.
I did seek legal advice and they mentioned that any proof I have including photos/videos would be admissible in court as I can’t prove the flea infestation was there before I moved in unless I get a witness statement from the previous tenant or neighbour. Let’s be real, no one is going to give a statement. If I wanted to fight and get my £300 back I would end up loosing more money for court fees so overall it would be a loosing battle.
I had to find a storage unit and removal service ASAP then the following day moved out of the flat and the tenancy has now ended.
This while ordeal lasted exactly 1 week since I had ‘moved in’. I wasn’t even living in the property but somehow he blamed me for bringing a whole infestation in. It’s clear to say the previous tenants must have secretly had a pet without the landlord knowing and I ended up being the victim to it.
Now I am in search for the new flat and wanting to find one soon. I’m so traumatised by this experience that’d like to know how people search for any signs of a possible infestation so I can check beforehand when seeing a new flat.
Even if you have any advice on things to check on in general that would be highly appreciated.
Thanks

2024.05.19 21:10 No_Alarm_3120 5y of postdoc, trying to switch to industry and having an awful time

I have finished my last postdoc in December as my fellowship ended and I am sure I’m not a good fit for academia. However, I’m also thinking I’m not a good fit for industry either. It has been almost 5 months that I’ve been applying to Scientist/Sr Sci positions full time. Uncountable applications, 10+ interviews, 2 panel interviews and 0 offers. And every time I see job ads it’s always like “5y+ of academic AND industry experience” or “1-3y of post graduate experience”. I’m not part of both groups. For many reasons (I.e. visa restrictions being VERY honest), I didn’t try to join industry in 2021. No company would want to sponsor me. Right now I have no leads, no interviews scheduled, no exciting applications, nothing. Zero. I have been appropriately rejected by all companies I had been interviewed for. I am aware that it has been a rough time for people with and without industry experience, but I’d like to have your opinion.
Even trying my absolute best to do a better job in my interviews by reading stuff here in this community, asking colleagues to criticize my resume, YouTube videos, catching up with colleagues in industry, etc, would the bad market be a major reason I haven’t landed a job yet?

2024.05.19 21:03 Successful_Eye_8520 Every Choice Feels Like A Step In The Wrong Direction

I'm a 27 year old male who feels like everything I do is wrong and stupid. It took me a long time to find a job just recently after I was forced to quit my part-time security job at the end of last year, I'm currently working as a cashier and deli clerk at Sprouts. When I was applying for jobs I was submitting applications anywhere and everywhere just so I could earn and save enough to rent a room but now that I have this job I still feel as depressed and stressed as when I was looking for work, worried about how I would survive without money. I've only been at this new job a few days now but I hate it. I don't want to cut customer's meats, I don't want to remember PLU codes, I don't want to interact with customers and ring up their groceries,I don't want to wrangle shopping carts, I don't want to interact with coworkers, I don't want to eat quickly on a 30 min lunch break, I don't want to wear a stupid uniform. I know that I am the one who made this decision to apply for this job but I just hate it already and it's not like I can afford to not work, I promised the people that I'm staying with that I would only be living with them for a few months. They are a nice older couple that I've known for a few years now and they're letting me stay with them in their spare room free of charge after I reached out to them because I had nowhere else to go but my time here is limited, I don't want to be a burden to them for too long. The thing is, I just want to be financially secure enough to rent a room while I complete my educational goals. I have one more semester left of completing my associates degree at community college and then i'll be transferring to a university. I want to be able to focus on my studies without having to be worried about monetary issues, I'm fine with work but I don't want to have to dedicate a majority of my time to a job that demands so much of me, a job that has nothing to do with what I am trying to accomplish with my actual educational and career goals. Why do all these minimum wage jobs want so much from me? I need time to study, I need time to read, I need time to exercise, I need time to eat, I need time to sleep, I need time to take care of myself but it feels fucking impossible with all these minimum wage jobs that want me to dedicate all my time to them and be proficient in their bullshit just to earn a living wage. It's all too much, I don't think I can handle it. I'm falling deeper and deeper into despair. I have no friends for support and if I turn to my family I will have to put all my educational goals on hold and I just can't do that, I'm almost 30 and I can't afford to do that. I am so fucking depressed and anxious all the time. I really want some security and stability in my life for once. What do I need to do? Should I just say fuck it and join the National Guard? At least they help out with things like school and rent. Should I keep trying to sell myself and look for a sugar daddy on seeking arrangements? Should I put my car to use and become an uber driver, door dasher, and instacart shopper? At least then I can arrange my own schedule. Should I find another minimum wage job, one that doesn't require me to interact with people and pretend to give a shit about being a team player for something stupid and useless, but what other jobs are even like that? I don't know, maybe I should just give up and end it all. Nothing feels like it's ever going to work out, nothing feels like it's going to get better. It doesn't seem like any decision I make will lead to stability and happiness. I'm fucking stupid and worthless. I'm pathetic, I don't know how to survive. I don't know how to live

2024.05.19 20:55 ListenCompetitive524 Incomplete applications, unclear instructions

Ive only had fast food or retail jobs. I’m looking for a real job after getting my Bachelors. Their applications are more difficult. I’m getting a lot of conflicting information and it’s very upsetting. Don't make you resume longer than a page. List ALL your jobs. The application should match your resume but that would be longer than a page. List only relevant experience. My community college isnt on the drop down menu on the application. But if i omit it from my resume theres a gap. But my other community college is on the drop down menu. I dont know my managers emails. They wont answers their phones. One had a kids and just stopped answering her phone completley. Every application wants information i dont have an im upset they want mine to be error free when their own website isn't great. Im trying to make my application and clear accurate and error free as i can Also it wants my hs and college transcripts. The website is not workkng. I type in my new adress and the receipt states my old adress. The application said i can send them in separatly but thats just another thing bugging me wondering if my transcripts will be sent to the correct adress.

2024.05.19 20:40 theotherghostgirl Short but sweet

Got fired from my last job 3 months ago, and I’m a little discouraged at the luck I’m having at finding a new one.
I know it takes a shit ton of applications and interviews to get a job, it’s not my first rodeo, but getting ghosted or rejected so many times it hurts, especially the fact I spent two years of my life to get the degree necessary. It kind of makes it feel like I’ve wasted about 3 and a half years of my life for nothing, because I’m essentially back at square one.

2024.05.19 20:33 sadworldmadworld Advice for Last-Minute Application

Context: I graduated May 2023 and am currently in my gap year working a fairly intense job that hasn’t left me much time or emotional/mental space for introspection in the last…9 months. I’ve been trying to write a personal statement for a couple of weeks now and it just…has not happened. It’s now literally 9 days before I can submit and I don’t have a work and activities or personal statement. I have LOR writers waiting on me for the personal statement and obviously they can’t write my LORs without them.
…needless to say, things are not looking up. Obviously I’ve considered applying next cycle, but I have an MCAT score I’m very happy with and not sure I can replicate, and I’d have to retake the MCAT for sure if I wait another cycle (took it Fall 2022). I also feel like I’m going crazy in the liminal space of pre-med and really don’t have it in me to take 3 gap years.
I know the biggest advice is to just “sit and write,” and I have tried. Seriously. I just can’t seem to get words out of my brain. I tend to be a fairly last-minute person throughout college and most of my college app essays were written the day before, but this is probably the most important application of my life, and it’s the kind of thing people spend literal months on.
I guess I’m just looking to get any advice I can from anyone who’s been in this position…or who hasn’t, but has advice regardless. I know the predominant advice will probably be "girl...you should not be applying right now," which, fair, but here we are I guess.

2024.05.19 20:26 a_blue_teacup What to do when salary info required for job apps?

As far as I know, if asked in an interview, I know I'm not required to disclose anything.
But what trips me up is when I am filling out an application online, and try to advance past the job history parts, some applications force you to fill something in for previous salary.
Same thing for questions about the salary you expect for the role. They tend to be required and the fields only accept numeric inputs.
What is your approach for those questions?
I've been wondering about this for a long time, but forget to ask here.
I don't really want to disclose my past salary cuz I worked for an employer in a state that has much higher salary rates than my current state. And I don't want employers thinking that I'm going to expect the same level of compensation and get rejected for that. So I don't really know what to put for those fields.
So far I've been lowering my old salary to fit in the listed range of the job description. I hope this is the right approach.

2024.05.19 20:24 Thetheguy122 Local 38 JATC?

Hi brothers and sisters, after finally making a decision, I submitted an application to apply for the apprenticeship as an inside wireman thru LU 38 out of Cleveland, Ohio and I noticed they have evening and morning classes.
I currently have an industrial maintenance job, (non-union, but they follow a lot of similar policies as they used to be Union,) and I’d like to keep it to help finances stay up until I’ve got my time in to make enough money as an apprentice.
Does anyone out of Cleveland have any advice or experiences? Also any tips on good contractors for Commercial & Industrial?
Thank you in advance.

I'll be traveling to another country for the next 3 weeks to find jobs and network with people where I grew up. I know there's a question "Were you away from your permanent residence for more than three days last week?" when filing weekly benefits. 2024.05.19 20:08 Mannabecoldouthere Question about the Innovate Uk smart grant

I’ve applied for a grant of around £325,000, and my team and I are expected to contribute £97,000 (30%) of that amount. In my application, I mentioned that I plan to use crowdfunding and/or reach out to angel investors to cover this contribution after developing an MVP, which would be months after the grant is approved.
My question is: Does Innovate UK require me and my business partners to have this 30% contribution available at the beginning of the project? We currently lack the savings or high-paying jobs to cover this upfront.
P.S. If crowdfunding or angel investors do not meet the contribution amount, I plan to apply for startup loans. Any advice on navigating this situation would be greatly appreciated.

2024.05.19 19:54 laarsa Any idea why this is taking so long?

Any idea why this is taking so long?
Last I heard from the office that has my application is when they called my Dad in late November while I was in the hospital to tell him I was medically approved and ask a few questions (he says he doesn't remember what the questions were).
My case manager at the local department of human services has been trying to get ahold of the office (as have I) but their phone line has been down for over a year. You hear a crackly automated message before it automatically hangs up on you. The main SSA hotline said that it is their real number and there is nothing they can do about it. They did give me an alternative number to call them from but it's the same broken system.
My lease is about to expire and my Dad said he doesn't want to help me with living expenses again unless I have income. So I might be homeless in the next few months. I have no other family willing to help.
I haven't gotten a job. Only cash I have on hand is small amounts of money my brother Venmo's me here and there for necessities. I use a Venmo debit card instead of sending it to the account that the SSA has on file, so I don't think they'll find that as suspicion I'm doing work for family, unless???

2024.05.19 19:50 maps1122 Spouse visa to ILR and citizenship

I am coming to the UK on a spouse visa in June and I want to make sure I don’t somehow mess up my spouse visa renewal, ILR (5-year route) and citizenship applications.
I understand that because we applied before April 11, 2024 the income threshold of £18,600 is likely apply for all future applications.
What I want to know is any gaps in our records we should worry about so as to make sure we don’t create inadvertent complications in future applications. - what if there’s a gap in our financial records (period of unemployment or leave), would that affect future applications? Are there specific periods we should avoid switching jobs? - what period of absences from the UK are ‘allowed’ for ILR and citizenship applications? - how does parental leave affect these applications? - how does self-employment affect the applications and standards of evidence? - any other common pitfalls that we should be aware of?

2024.05.19 19:48 ReLisK I need to decide today, should I give up?

Backstory: i worked in IT in a bit of a mixed role we did SQL, we did project mgmt, we did a bit of sre, we did Software dev, we did change/project mgmt and we did web app support. It was a very mixed role. Whilst the work was fine and team otherwise was fine, I rlly didn't like my manager and had some real problems there (to be fair no one liked the person they all just pretend). Im talking shouts at you in front of everyone type manager. I did that for 5 years before finally my dream came through, I ended up getting a remote swe job. I had it for a year and BOOM got laid off. My team at that company rlly liked me but they didn't rlly have a choice.
My situation now: is I have been jobless for exactly a year now. I have been trying to get a job but locally there are few to no jobs. Applying to Remote jobs which was my initial focus has been just a sea of disappointment I feel like no matter how I explain my work history the market simply just wants 5 years exp in purely swe, who knows at least 20 dif stacks. Other than that your screwed. I mean I only have a few jobs that reach past the application stage and initial interview stage. Every click on linkedIn is beginning to feel hopeless..practicing leet which was always mind numbing feels even worse now. Just the other day a recruiter told me I passed the interview and it went well so they would want me but the position is now on hold and they were to get back to me this past week.. silence.
The Decision: Long story short i got contacted by my prev job they offered me to come back. I have kind of delayed my response for a month now. But got contacted for a update a few days ago so rlly need to respond today. I think the saying is "a bird in hand is worth more than 2 in the bush". But man i rlly just wanted to continue doing purely swe work and to go back to that manager and give them that pleasure. I think I know what I must do but like when I spoke to a friend he told me if I had kids and a wife I would've just shut up and took the job by now. But I also know that when I imagine it I feel so depressed.... like this is all my life will ever amount to giving a manager i don't like literally all of my youth. What should I do?...
PS. I wanted to post this on a throwaway but 100 post karma barrier :(. Will prolly have to delete it in 24 hrs as I am paranoid someone will recognise me.

2024.05.19 19:46 King_Vinnie_G Seeking Recommendations: One-stop Solution for Streamlining Job Applications

Hey everyone, I'm looking for a website that can streamline my job applications by storing all my work experience, education, and resume details. I'm tired of filling in the same blanks over and over again. Any recommendations for a program that can do this?
I used a website that would do this for me; it was last year, but I cannot remember what the website was called.
