Glaive Lord is Surprisingly Good After the Buff (Yes, THE Glaive Lord)
It baffles me that I’m even writing this, but NK’s actually made GLord not just usable, but decently strong on even the True Experts because of the new ability for it to ricochet back and hit the same target multiple times per throw. If you haven’t tried it yet, I’d certainly recommend you give it a shot, because my first go-around with it after the update led to the run that you see above (that I didn’t complete because I accidentally restarted lol). Not only is there essentially no other damage tower aside from GLord and Sauda, but it also only requires minimal support in the form of Single Target DMG and the usual MGlue/Press shenanigans that allow towers like this to shine. Obviously a run like this would struggle to r100, but it’d still end up with likely 40k by the end of the run, which is an incredible feat for a tower that used to be quite possibly the worst option for its price (aside from, say, Spectre at the time), and it’s certainly not that Sauda is OP on Bloodles despite my continued claim that she is indeed great on the Texperts.
Now, this may seem circumstantial or anecdotal or whatever you may try to write it off as, but keep two things in mind. Firstly, this was my first attempt at doing the run, and I had no idea what to get at really any point aside from my regular earlygame. This saveup took zero planning ahead and just some basic knowledge of income and round formation. Secondly, this is the hardest map in the base game we’re talking about here, and GLord casually swept up the majority of lategame with some basic support, and keep in mind, it can’t move around! Even though it’s relegated to one side, the glaives ricochet and help Sauda decimate Cerams that she would otherwise need a dedicated control/stall tower for, and it also provides a hell of a lot of damage to MOAB class bloons as considering its high pierce and base damage – so if it can work well here, imagine what it can do for you on essentially any other Texpert/Expert.
It’s a small buff, and one that doesn’t sound nearly as strong as it is in-game, but it goes to show that a minor boost to something that a tower should have an emphasis on can make it comparatively incredible to its prior form. I’m personally considering it to be at least an above-average T5 now, which is ridiculous to say considering, well…
It’s Glaive Lord. So good on ya, NK.
If anyone would like to add on, give insights, disagree, or what have you feel free to leave a comment and we can discuss further, because I feel that they genuinely hit the nail on the head for what this tower should be.

I banked the fire and stared into the golden eyes of Beatale before I crept into my makeshift tent.
I still had my auric vision running and couldn’t help but notice the thin silver cord that ran from me to Horse. Firming up my aura, I reached out with my hand and grabbed it. I could feel the nearly imperceptible vibration between my fingers as I used my mind to probe at the thread. I could feel a bright spark of intellect, a light at the end of a tunnel. Pushing with my mind, I slid down the thread until the spark grew larger and eventually filled my inner vision with a hazy white light. Horsey thoughts nudged at me curiously.
I slid into the haze and immediately lost all sense of direction. If it wasn’t for the silver thread, I’d have no idea how to exit this shifting white fog. Horsey thoughts got stronger as I followed the thread while the haze thinned and cleared to reveal an endless prairie of green grass. I found myself standing before a naked man wearing a horse mask and I stared in shock. It was obviously me wearing a cheap costume horse mask — there was no mistaking my tattoos.
“What did you expect?” Horse neighed at me. “I am you and you are me and we are all together. Goo goo ga joob.”
Horse made a shooing motion with his hands and I accelerated backwards through the white haze and slammed into my own body with a gasp. I stared at the tarp overhead for a long minute, processing this new revelation. Horse was a part of me, a piece of my spirit. Whatever psychic stuff I did with that silver cord lead me into a house of mirrors where I got to look at myself pretending to be a horse. I can’t even deal with that right now.
Rolling into my blankets, I dropped off to sleep.
*Ding*

I banished the pop-up and looked around. I knew I was asleep, but everything was just as real as when I was awake. I was breathing, I could feel the floor under my feet, and if it weren’t for the pop-up, I would have sworn I had been teleported. The room I was in resembled an oversized luxury prison cell, maybe a thirty foot cube. No windows. Rough stone walls with thick mortar. Large brass wall sconces were set directly into the stone and suffused the room with a warm, golden light provided by glowing rocks. The stone floor had colourful Persian rugs tastefully placed. A high plaster ceiling was painted with a rendition of Michelangelo’s ‘Creation of Adam’, depicting me as both Adam and God.
There was a comfy sofa in front of a large screen television that hung from one wall and an ornate grandfather clock ticked loudly in the corner. It was currently 10:08 PM. Another wall was a floor to ceiling bookshelf, stuffed with books of varying sizes. The third wall was covered with pictures and I could see at a glance that they were images from my life. The fourth wall had a thick riveted steel door on the right side, a full sized mirror on the left, and a computer workstation in the middle.
The picture wall was my first target. A few were quite large, nearly life sized, while others were tiny prints no larger than the palm of my hand. Scenes of my life were displayed in each one. The largest was me riding Horse with a shit-scared expression, shooting at a pack of wolves. Others were smaller, each with different frames. Some ornate gold or silver, others plain wood, a few wrapped in briars or barbed wire. Nanny Ramsey holding me as a young child. My dog Jean with a red ball in his mouth. My parents, screaming at me. I turned my attention to the books. Books are safe. Books don’t judge you.
The sweet, musty scent of a used book store filled my nostrils as I drew close to the honey coloured shelves. Hundreds of volumes filled the wall from floor to ceiling, with a ladder that could be rolled along a rail to access the top. I smiled at the sight. I had always wanted a library like this. I pulled a book at random and read the title, “Confused Fantasies about Joseph Harris, part XXIV of the Middle School Years”.
I slid the book back onto the shelf. Let’s see what’s on TV.
The remote was a slim, futuristic looking affair with a minimum of buttons. I pointed it at the television and moments later the huge screen came to life and presented me with a simple menu for movies, divided into six categories: Happy, Surprised, Afraid, Disgusted, Angry, and Sad. I scrolled through the offerings for a minute, reading the titles and reviews about the movies of my life. It really bothered me that there were so few selections in the Happy section.
The number of Sad movies increased by one.
I walked over to the mirror and noticed there was a small sticky note pasted to it. “Astral Realm. Experienced users only.” I shoved the note in my pocket and stared at my image. Sturdy black boots, black denim jeans and shirt with mother-of-pearl buttons, deep brown gun belt slung at my hip, red bandanna and black felt hat. All I needed was a pencil moustache and I would look like the stereotypical villain in any spaghetti western. At that very moment I decided to grow out a goatee. I’d rather be mistaken for a bad guy than a victim.
So how does this astral realm thing work?
The mirror appeared to be nothing more than a mirror. It was cold, smooth glass surrounded by a wrought iron frame, and reflected my image. I didn’t necessarily want to go walking into danger, but I wanted to know how it worked. I pushed and prodded the glass in frustration until I noticed my image grinning at me. I jumped back in surprise and it doubled over in silent laughter.
“Hilarious, dude. You got me,” I huffed. “So how do I get in?”
My mirror-self tipped his hat and stepped to side.
I reached up to the mirror again and my hand passed through, vanishing as if cut off. Okay, just a quick peek and we’ll explore the rest of the room. I stepped through and the world shifted around me. I was standing back at the campsite. My body was insubstantial as a ghost and the tarp was a wisp of substance running straight through me. Non living things don’t seem to have much presence in this realm. Glancing down, I saw my sleeping body rolled up in the blankets, a thin silver thread running from it to me, and another thread running to Horse.
Looking around, I surveyed the campsite. My astral vision seemed to be on and had an unlimited range. I could see the life all around me, the distant forest was a sea of greenish-gold, grasses and brush nearby glowed with spectral light. Tiny ghost insects scurried while ghost mice nibbled at whatever ghost mice nibble on. Ghost seeds and ghost insects, I suppose. I turned my attention overhead and gaped at the sight of a monstrous serpentine spirit flying through the inky void. I dropped back through the tent and rolled inside my body. That was plenty enough for now.
I rolled through the mirror and landed flat on my back, staring at the fresco on the ceiling. Vinnie-God winked at me and Vinnie-Adam grinned. Climbing to my knees, I brushed non-existent dust from my trousers and watched mirror-me doubled over in soundless laughter.
“Hey, laughing-boy!” I yelled at him. “You’re like the guardian or something, right? You got it covered?”
Mirror-me stood and saluted with a smile, then gave me two thumbs up. A moment later, his face took on a serious expression and he wriggled his right hand in the ‘maybe’ motion. Then he pointed at me, tapped his wrist, and then a finger to his head.
It all depends on how fast I learn stuff, I guess.
Two thumbs up and a winning smile reflected back to me.
A large cork board was mounted to the wall over the computer and a small note was pinned to it. “Note to self: Don’t fuck with the Elvish womens.”
The computer screen featured a screensaver of me as Vitruvian Man doing callisthenics over the words ‘HumanOS’. I tapped the spacebar and was rewarded with the sound of powerful fans kicking to life as the computer emerged from sleep mode and prompted me for a password. Should I assume it’s the same as the password on the computer I pawned in my previous life?
Password: *******esi
I was rewarded with a sweet R&M desktop and a couple of icons. System, NeuralNet, My-Tunes, My-Movies, My-Office.
System was just what I expected, lots of .dna files and other confusing scariness that allowed me to tweak my physical body and mental state. My-Tunes was a collection of every song I’d ever heard and My-Movies was a collection of every movie I’d ever seen. Not that I’m complaining, but it would have been nice to have “My-Games” so I could play RDR. My-Office was a clone of the popular software by a similar name. I have no idea what I’ll ever need a spreadsheet for in this world.
NuralNet opened up a search engine called Me-Seeks, featuring a familiar blue guy.
I typed in “beer” and several thousand results were displayed, anything I’d ever read, heard, or watched about beer, including how to make it. This right here made the price of admission totally worth it, access to an exact copy of everything I’d ever read, and I was a voracious reader. Sadly, most of the stuff I read was futurology — solar panels, electronics, biotech advancements, quantum computing. The material for steam engines, blacksmithing, farming and the like, were slim pickings. That’s okay though, I could still reproduce the Gutenberg press, the cotton gin, simple internal combustion engines, and basic batteries along with some sketchy knowledge of metal alloys, acids, bases, and other things I had read over the years. All that wasted time watching “How Things Work” was finally going to pay off. I copied a few likely money makers to My-Office, saved the file, and exported to my Notes, just in case they didn’t exist on Aerth.
A popup covered the screen.

Apparently I could upgrade myself, which reduced the cost of using my Utilities while providing other minor benefits. My Utilities would level up as I used them, which would increase their battery cost, so if I didn’t keep pace with an update to the OS they could become prohibitively expensive to operate.
Stupid pay-to-win world.
So, do I pay 2000 credits for version 2.0 or 5000 credits for version 3.0?
I selected version 3.0 and klicked [Install]. After watching it download the update, it popped up another screen that asked if I wanted to update now, or wait until Midnight for the mandatory update.
I selected [No] just as the grandfather clock chimed 10:30 PM. I wondered if time ran slower in here, because it seemed like I had spent a lot more time on the computer than 15 minutes. Walking over to the imposing steel door, I noticed a bronze key with a thin chain in the lock. There was another sticky note on the door. “Subconscious. Please keep the key with you at all times.”
That’s not scary at all, is it?
I unlocked the door with a loud clunk and pulled it open to reveal a bedroom straight out of some royal castle. I could tell immediately that it had seen better days. The tapestries on the wall were frayed and fading. The canopy over the bed had a few holes in it. A thin layer of dust covered the mantle of a small fireplace set into the wall. There was a window letting in bright sunlight and I moved over to look outside.
I was on the third floor of a keep surrounded by the walls and turrets of a modest castle. A castle that had fallen into serious disrepair. Did this represent the state of my inner mind? One tower was shattered and the curtain wall under it damaged. The lower bailey was full of litter. I could see a few soldiers walking around the allure, keeping watch.
I have people in my subconscious?
Someone behind me cleared their throat.
Whirling, I discovered a familiar old man standing in the door of the bedroom. What was left of his hair formed a white halo around his head, his face was unshaven and covered with several days of growth. He was dressed like a poor and tattered manservant, but carried himself with a dignified air.
“Woodhouse?”
“It’s nice to see the master at home,” He said with a proper English accent. “There are many matters that require the master’s attention.”
“Uh, sure,” I said, hanging the key around my neck and tucking it in my shirt. “And who are you again?”
“Your personal manservant, of course” he said with a slight bow. Walking over to the steel door, he pulled it closed and it locked with a solid thunk. “Master should always keep his inner sanctum closed. One never knows if something nasty will creep in.”
“Thank you, uh, Woodhouse. I’ll remember that,” I said, rubbing the back of my neck. “So what needs tending and how do things work around here?”
He smiled and beckoned me with a white gloved hand. “If master would be so kind as to follow me, I’ll introduce him to the staff and explain the duties and obligations of his domain.”
I’m 99.9% certain that everyone here is just me wearing a mask, so I shrugged and followed Woodhouse out of the bedroom and into the rest of my subconscious.
Five minutes later I was on the ground floor and seated on a shabby throne with the cast of a popular —and probably very copyright protected— animation in front of me. Woodhouse was the head butler and my personal manservant. Pam was the cook and demanded that I start importing sugar and alcohol before she was shushed by Woodhouse. Carol was a maid. Krieger was chancellor and Cyril was the steward. Archer and Lana were in charge of security. Ray was the marshal in charge of everything from the stables to the blacksmith.
I stared in disbelief at the motley crew kneeling in front of me. No wonder my inner mind was in such shambles. I was overcome with an irrational sense of anger at myself.
“Arright, listen up,” I barked, my voice echoing around the room. “I swear to God that I will fire every single one of you and hire circus clowns to replace you if you keep fucking things up. No joke. Circus clowns, got it?”
I ran a hand over my face as Ray pissed himself. “The only reason I’m not putting a boot in your asses right now is because I realise that you’re aspects of me, and the people you represent are pretty damn good at their jobs when they give enough of a shit to actually do them. As a team, you’re dysfunctionally fantastic and always seem to come out ahead no matter the odds.”
Heaving a sigh, I continued. “Things have changed and I need to get my shit together. I’m going to need every one of you to pull your weight and help me help you. Get back to your duties, I’ll meet you one on one later.”
My subconscious caretakers scurried out of the room.
“I’ll have one of the maids tend to the piss,” Woodhouse assured me.
“Never mind that,” I snapped. “I honestly had no idea my mind was such a shit show. I’m very disappointed in myself.” I pictured the Angry, Sad, and Disgusted counters on my personal movies clicking up. “Show me what needs to be done and let’s get started.”
During Woodhouse’s walking tour, everything clicked into place. This was some altered version of Bodiam castle, a location that was on my bucket list of places to visit. The royal council room, located behind the throne room, contained a “living” tapestry on the wall that showed the castle and surrounding land in real time. The castle was located in the middle of a small lake, and a single wood bridge led to the mainland. A small town surrounded the lake and a wall encircled the town. Outside the wall, the land was an irregular patchwork of forest and field, with a stinking swamp to the south. The entire “kingdom” was maybe ten miles across, surrounded by impassable mountains with innumerable creeks that fed the lake which drained into the southern swamp.
“Zombies are the problem, sir.” Woodhouse said, as I surveyed the living tapestry of my mental domain.
“Zombies?” I prompted.
“Yes sir, Zombies” Woodhouse continued. “Nasty bitey things that come in from the mountains and harass the peasants. They’ve gotten especially worse over the last few months. The soldiers do what they can, but they seem to have lost all motivation. Probably because they haven’t been paid.”
“And who pays them?”
“Typically chancellor Krieger is in charge of financial matters, although Steward Figgis has taken over the duty, sir.”
“Then let’s make Figgis our first stop.”
“Very good, sir.”
The office of the steward was run by Cyril Figgis, who managed the kingdom in my absence. It was overflowing with paperwork and charts, books and scrolls piled high on every flat surface. Cyril was desperately attempting to tidy things when Woodhouse and I walked in.
“Yo..you..your majesty,” Cyril stuttered, bowing low. Scrolls fell from his overloaded arms, spilling across the floor. He dropped to his knees and scrambled to gather them up. “I didn’t expect you to visit so soon. Please forgive the mess, housekeeping has been slacking…”
This was the guy who ran things while I was conscious.
“Shut up, Cyril” I said. “You’re responsible for everything in this office. That includes keeping it organised and tidy.”
“Y..yes milord.”
“It’s my understanding that you’re in charge of making sure everyone gets paid. So why aren’t we paying people?” I asked.
“We’re nearly out of Fuks, your majesty. I’ve been saving them for emergencies.”
“Fucks?”
“Fuks,” Cyril explained, pushing a pile of books off a large chest and opening it. Reaching inside he pulled out two small bags and emptied them on top of his cluttered desk. “Gold and Silver Fuks, the currency of the kingdom. I can’t maintain the kingdom when I have no Fuks to give.”
Behold the subconscious kingdom of Vincent J. Carter, it runs on Fuks.
“So how do I get more fuks?” I asked, examining one of the coins. It had an image of me on one side and symbol on the other that could be interpreted as “peace among worlds”.
“You kill the zombies, your majesty.”
Of course I do.
Woodhouse and I left Cyril’s office and headed towards the office of the chancellor where Krieger worked. It seemed that Cyril took over financial matters when Krieger became erratic and proposed luring all the zombies into the city and setting it on fire. Not sure how that corresponds to my own self-destructive behaviour, but I’ve had some dark thoughts over the last couple of months and I’m sure they’re reflected here.
Krieger’s office was much neater in comparison to Cyril’s, but it wasn’t by much. Shelves lined the walls and were filled with an array of questionable items, including a still snapping zombie head in a jar. While the office of the chancellor was supposed to be in charge of financial matters, it looked more like a dodgy rummage sale.
Krieger was launching sword blades at a pig carcass when we walked in.
“What exactly are you doing?” I asked, standing in the doorway.
“Hm? Oh, your majesty!” he said, turning around and bowing deeply. “I’m testing a new invention. It’s a spring loaded hilt that shoots sword blades. Very useful for our soldiers.”
“Stupidest idea ever,” I snapped. “I hate everything about it.”
“Okay,” Krieger said, tossing the hilt into a nearby pile of junk. “But don’t blame me when you need to shoot a sword at a zombie and don’t have one.”
“So why aren’t you managing the financial affairs? Collecting taxes, paying people, stuff like that?”
“Because the population has declined so much none of that matters?”
“What do you mean?”
“Wellll, the population represents things you care about,” Krieger said, going into lecture mode. “And the zombies and other monsters are real or imagined problems in your way. Since you don’t care about too many things the population has shrunk to just what’s needed to keep everything running on the bare minimum of fuks. And since you don’t seem to have any long or short term goals, there’s no need to kill off the zombies and get more fuks. Everything is fine just the way it is.”
“No, it’s not Krieger” I said, grinding my teeth. “My mind is in a shambles. It’s a joke. I want it fixed. No, I want it better than fixed. I want it improved.”
“Oh! I’ve got just the thing for that!” He said, digging around in his pockets, “It’s a spring-loaded hilt that shoots swords!”
Pam and Cheryl were hanging out a gallery window jeering at Archer and Lana sparring in the inner courtyard.
“What the hell are you doing!” I snapped
They whirled in surprise and then dropped into deep curtseys.
“Your majesty!”
I took a deep breath, trying to regain my centre. “Get to work cleaning this place up. Find a room, clean it, and move on to the next. Start with my bedroom, then the throne room and the council chamber, then everything else.”
Cheryl spoke up. “Can’t do it. We got no fuks to clean with.”
“You need fuks to clean?”
“Gotta buy stuff,” Pam said. “Cleaning supplies, food. You wanna eat, you’re gonna have to spend some fuks.”
“Talk to Cyril,” I ordered. “Tell him I said to get you supplied.”
They ran off in the direction of the stewards office.
I watched Archer and Lana bashing each other enthusiastically through the window.
Several minutes later the sparring couple stopped and bowed when Woodhouse and I stepped into the inner courtyard.
“Your majesty”
“My liege”
“Enough,” I said. “If you have enough energy to smash each other, you have enough energy to smash zombies. Tell me what I need to know so I can start gathering fuks.”
Archer shrugged and spoke first. “You just kill the zombies and other monsters. They drop fuks.”
“Anything special about the zombies?” I asked. “Are they fast? Do people get turned into zombies when bitten?”
“Nope,” Lana said, resting her wooden sword on her shoulder. “Most of them are slow shamblers and just need a good wack to the head to kill them.”
“Some are special,” Archer interjected. “Occasionally you’ll have some fast ones, or those that need holy water to kill. They’re just bad memories, figments of your personality that need to be eliminated. Some are worse than others.”
“The zombies are bad memories?” I asked, imagining all the bad memories that I had.
“Memories, thoughts, insecurities, metaphysical mumbo-jumbo,” Woodhouse supplied. “They are endless, but constant vigilance can keep them under control.”
“So let’s get started,” I said. “Lead the way.”
Lana and Archer lead me up to the parapet over the front gate where I looked over at the dozens of zombies milling about aimlessly in front of the entrance to my mind. Pulling out my gun, I began to pick them off, easy as shooting fish in a barrel. The crack of my spell pistol attracted more zombies and I dispatched them with ease until no more were left around the gate. As I fired each shot I could feel some sort of existential energy flowing from me, draining some hidden reserve.
“Gather up the Fuks,” I commanded. “And Lana?”
“Mi’lord?”
“There’s no excuse for this. From now on, I expect the walls to be clear of all zombies.”
“Yes mi’lord,” she said, giving me a small bow.
Turning to Archer, I shook my head. “You’re obviously my personal narcissism, so just try to stay out of Lana’s way, or better yet - try to kill more zombies than her. If you think you can.”
Archer scoffed. “No contest. I took top marks in sharpshooting.”
“That means I should expect to see results by tomorrow. I look forward to it.”
Archer looked panicked for a moment then smiled. “Sure, I can give you results.”
Turning back to Woodhouse I said “Show me what else need attending.”
Woodhouse led me through the town that represented my mind, pointing out each business that had fallen into disrepair, suggested others that needed improvements, and additions that would benefit me. In the distance, I could hear Lana and Archer shooting at the crowd of zombies and with each echoing shot I felt a tiny bit better about everything.

2024.06.01 08:20 LePeaceMaker To The_Keg and people who believe AGI heroes are the trend setters and others need to keep up...

Do you remember TI12 and the most contested heroes in pro play and pubs? Bristleback, Spiritbreaker, Doom, Centaur, Tidehunter, Mars, Kunkka etc. Do yall remember the Vanguard Blademail Heart Octarine builds that majority of carries couldn't deal with?
Try playing Slark into these heroes in lane with his worthless stat gains and weak farming capabilities. Try playing Ursa in these lanes where they can trade and heal back up with their regen from Bracer and Vanguard while Ursa has to keep ferrying regen. Monkey King? he can do aight, but these STR heroes have aoe farm spells that easily lets them comeback into the game and proceed to control said MK. Least we forget Brewmaster with evasion and brewlings that had 3k hp with magic immunity that demolishes your towers from safety.
Even now with 7.36, the trend setters are STR Offlaners like LC, Axe, Night Stalker, Centaur, Slardar and SK who has risen from the sands to fuck you with his Stinger and almost 100% uptime in his Aghs aoe stun Sandstorm (Topson is currently spamming him mid, and sometimes he plays it offlane cause the hero is that versatile).
To me, the OP of that "Why I'm so glad Valve (almost) never listen to reddit take on balance" post has clearly not played through multiple years of Dota and took the time to analyze the meta timelines. STR heroes had climbed in relevance since TI6 and had reach their apex form in TI12. Prior to 12? TI11 Zoo Tanks that bought Wraithpact like Beastmaster, Tide, Lycan, Underlord etc. If not, then you had tanky fucks like Wraith King and his skellies running at you non-stop.
TI10 Tiny was busted cause of broken numbers, otherwise as carry, he could be controlled as seen with Spirit vs Tinys in that tournament (Magnus Horn Toss, Collapse Mars Godly plays both heroes are STR). Supports, Offlanes and Mids had received a lot of utility and damage with their spells to control these carries (Spirit hero mids, Willow Lion pos 4, Hoodwink etc,). Remember when Yataro had the most versatile carry picks of that tournament as he was given late picks during the draft just so he can adapt to the offlaners and Tinys thrown at him?
Even then, carries are forced majority of the time to buy BKB just so they can actually survive in fights and yet, not necessarily kill the opponents (remember the time where people complained about how BKB is overbought but fail to realize it was the only way to protect oneself from being constantly disabled, controlled slowed etc cause STR INT heroes whose new kits to do said things and scale?). Furthermore, BKB stat's were not necessarily good vs other scaling items for its price.
Lets not forget TI8 and 9 with Ench offlane having Untouchable as their regular spell, making it impossible to kill her since pos 5s and 1s are primarily right click first in lane. Then you had the Necro, Wraith King, Weaver offlanes. Not all offlaners are STR, but look at how versatile their toolkits are. Literally just shut down the carries and eventually take over the game as carries can't 1v5 anymore (Yes Dota is a team game to win, but pos 1 has the hardest route to come online and requires a lot of help from their teammates and even then, not necessarily the most impactful throughout the game as pos 2s, 3s and 4s are with their lockdown, mobility and damage).
Regarding the Zeus outrage. Zeus was known as a glass cannon who primarily played mid and was usually last pick. He had %hp damage with his E passive before it was a jump, had shit tons of burst damage, able to reveal invis heroes and had 2 global bursts (1 with aghs). His weaknesses was he's squishy and had low mobility, hence unplayable if Storm or similar jump hero was in the pool. However, despite his flaws, he had a high win% on dotabuff and a decent winrate in high mmr because he was a late game menace as bkb durations dwindled. Players adapted to play against him and Valve thought "you know what, let's give him a jump so he can have better odds to survive" (granted I think the jump was fine, just heroes now needed to expand more resources to kill him).
But then Valve gave him his shard of right-click Arc Lightning with %hp damage that worked with illusions. Now he can buy Manta that gives him more damage and a dispel. Oh, he can also buy Hurricane Pike for the extra attack range and force-staff to push him to safety. Oh, now he don't necessarily need to buy a lot of mana regen to spam Arc Lightning to farm cause of his shard. Phylactery introduced? Best of both worlds of Burst damage and consistent high right-click damage. Since his Arc deals %hp damage, fuck buying damage items, he just needs attack speed, boom, Moonshard and now recently, Parasma. If Zeus still can die? He can now buy BKB and stand his ground to right click.
You see this Powercreep? You see how this hero no longer has a unique weakness that people can rely on to counter? This has trickled down to many heroes from the position 2, 3 and 4 for years now. Pos 4 example, Hoodwink has high cast range for her spells. Acorn does decent damage, aoe bounces and applies her right-click damage with attack modifiers. Bushwack is an aoe burst and stuns you towards a tree. No trees around? Acorn does the trick. Scurry gave her evasion and free pathing through trees and her Ult burst and breaks heroes too. But acorn scales, so she buys attack modifier items and damage items etc.
Lion, has aoe stun, single target hex and mana drain that gives him magic immunity with his shard, eventually leading to his mana draining dealing damage too. May not scale as greatly has Hoodwink, but key examples of power-creep through survival.
I can go on and on with how left behind carries are. Your TA example, TA was originally a mid hero and was pioneered as a safelane carry by OG.Sumail in the EU TI10 qualifiers as her refraction stops the burst damage dealt by the pos 3s and 4s. She then had the kit to jungle if needed and could scale as a range carry. Even then, she's burst susceptible if refraction is down, can't deal with illu/zoo heroes and has no cheap utility teamfight aoe spell. Think about that, TA, was not originally a carry, was adapted to be one just so carries can deal with the Tanky Burst Offlaners and their laning pos 4s.
Next time, actually go back and study the meta timelines before you spew your false "facts" on which roles are the most powerful and impactful. To the rest of the players who play other roles, especially the 2, 3 and 4s, look, there's no hate from me to yall, this is Valve's doing. I believe you guys have the same attitude years back with carries and their trilane AM's Gyro etc, so the current moment you guys prevailing is respectable.
I just cannot shake the fact that many carry heroes are the only ones that retain their unique traits of strengths and exploitable weaknesses when other roles are given the depth and tools to overcome their initial weaknesses without much resources/gold.

2024.06.01 07:24 Virtual-Chris Observations and Tips

Here are my observations from our trip. We spent a few days in Tokyo prior to a cruise that visited… Shimizu, Nagoya (cancelled due to high winds), Kobe (overnight for Osaka and Kyoto), Kochi, Naha, and Miyakojima before dropping us in Taiwan. A special thanks to many contributors on this sub for the many tips I’m confirming here. 😊
Arrival at Narita: - Fill out the immigration forms online before you leave for the smoothest experience for everyone. It does not really save you any time… you go through the same line and process as folks with paper forms. The difference is that online validates your entries, if you do something wrong on the paper form you have to correct in front of the agent which creates a delay for everyone. - Plan at least an hour for customs clearance - maybe more. There’s free wifi while standing in line. - We took the Narita Express from the airport to Shinjuku. It was the easiest option from my research and was super easy in practise. Cost was reasonable… buy tickets on arrival at the in person ticket office or nearby kiosks. Watch a video on YouTube to familiarize yourself with the process. There’s lots of room for luggage on the train
Language and Reception: - I read a lot about language barriers during my research but English was not a problem… the same as nearly anywhere else in the world these days. Almost everyone speaks English that we encountered but in the rare circumstance that wasn’t the case, Google Translate on our phone was helpful. It was also helpful for reading the occasional product label or sign that wasn’t in English using the photo option. Everyone smiles or chuckles if you use Konnichiwa or Arigato even if they speak perfect English. Hello and thank you are really the only words you need to know in any language in my experience to just show you’re aware of where you are and making a small effort. - Everyone appeared happy to have tourists as customers. Not annoyed or even indifferent, but happy. We didn’t experience any disapproving attitudes at all. People were even very happy to go out of their way to be helpful.
Hotel: - We stayed at the Kadoya Hotel in Shinjuku which offered the best value and location for our needs. I would definitely stay again. The rooms were very nice and decent sized. It’s a one block walk to entrance S2 or S3 for Shinjuku station on the quiet side of the station. - Being near the Golden Gai was nice as I could walk over there for a beer or drink after dinner while my wife rested. The Golden Gai is fun… tons of tiny hole in the wall bars/pubs. Some have a cover charge and some don’t. I chose one without a cover as I was only there for a single beer and had a great time chatting with some UK and Oz tourists.
Money: - We used a mix of Visa (with no foreign transaction fee), cash (obtained before departure) and Suica. Cash is helpful for snacks or other small purchases, and some small restaurants that only take cash. We used Suica for all trains, metro, buses, etc. - If you have an iPhone, you can’t beat the convenience of adding a Suica card to your Apple wallet. We loaded it before leaving and again mid-trip a couple of times from our Visa (also in Apple Wallet) - as long as you have internet access you can reload it anytime. - Overall, Tokyo and Japan are MUCH more affordable than Vancouver. Everything from metro fares to bottled water and restaurant food and beer was probably half the price on average compared to Vancouver. We typically paid about 1000 yen for a bowl of Ramen and 500-600 for a draft beer. The exception was espresso coffee drinks from Starbucks or any other cafe where they were equivalent price to what we pay at home.
Transportation: - The Tokyo (and Osaka/Kyoto) train and metro network is very easy to navigate. Probably one of the best in the world because you can just focus on line and station numbers and not on long unpronounceable station names. For example… if you’re going from Shinjuku to Asakusa, you could take the Shinjuku line to Bakuro-yokohama and switch to the Asakusa line at Higashi-Nihomnashi… which is a mouthful and says nothing about direction of travel. Thankfully you can just take the S-Line from S1 to S9 then the A-Line from A15 to A19. It couldn’t be easier. - Google Maps “Directions” is awesome for recommending routes with lines, station entrances, platforms, etc. When you get to a station, pick your destination in Google Maps and choose “Directions” and it will give you several train choices with full details. - As you might expect the cars at either end of the train will be less crowded than the cars in the middle or near the stairs/escalator… it’s worth the walk to the end of the platform.
Food: - I think I figured out why no one eats or drinks on the go… there’s no public trash cans. So, for example, if you buy a Starbucks coffee and walk around with it, you will have a tough time trying to dispose of the cup. Starbucks became our tourist oasis because they have bathrooms, wifi… and trash cans. LOL. It’s really very bizarre and encourages everyone to consume what you buy, where you buy it. Of course most convenience stores also have a trash bin for their customer use you can use as well. - Snacks… there’s no end of amazing snacks available from small stands, shops, and convenience stores. I’m not a big snacker, but my wife was snacking constantly and loving every minute of it. - Sushi… I think living in Vancouver has spoiled us with amazing Japanese restaurant and food choices. One big difference in Vancouver is that sushi restaurants have a lot of exotic rolls… dragon rolls, volcano rolls, etc. we didn’t see any of this in Japan. Sushi in Japan tends to be heavily focused on sashimi with simple rolls as an add on. Our fav sushi experience was at a conveyor belt restaurant where you just pick a plate as it passes by. Each plate has a colopattern that represents the cost of the item on it. When you’re done, they just add up the types of plates you have. - Ramen… There’s an insane variety of ramen and all are good. - Japanese Beef!!! We had a great but expensive Teppinyaki experience in Tokyo at Ginza Steak Shibuya. They offer all you can eat (within a time limit) A5 Wagyu beef but you can’t choose the cut and they don’t offer rib or tenderloin. Never the less, it’s fantastic beef and we left stuffed and smiling. I would only recommend it if you don’t mind spending over $100pp. The best beef I’ve ever had was at a Kobe steakhouse (Kobesteak Propeller) we visited on the cruise portion of the trip. They served us rib cut beef and it just melted in our mouth. Amazing! You get a small 160g portion but it’s quality over quantity and reasonably priced given the great appies and desert included. - We made reservations for the steak outings but otherwise just picked locations as we walked by or looking at nearby options on Google Maps.
Bathrooms: - Every toilet in Japan is high tech with a full suite of cleaning options and automated heated seats. The only feature it may be missing is a wifi hotspot 😛 - Bathrooms are easy to find at nearly every metro/train station and tourist attraction (and Starbucks and department stores). They are all very clean.
Communications: - I have a work funded roaming package so didn’t buy a local SIM plan. If I didn’t have my work plan I would have looked into this. - Free WiFi is plentiful and an app called Japan WiFi Auto Connect enables you to authenticate once with this app and then it runs in the background and auto authenticates you for a variety of free wifi hotspots streamlining the connection process. - Take advantage of downloading Google maps for offline use if you don’t have a cell plan in Japan.
Cruise Logistics: - I believe a lot of cruises depart from Yokohama, but ours departed from Tokyo. - The Tokyo International Cruise Terminal is very conveniently accessed by an elevated metro line (Yurikamome) from the Shimbashi metro/train station which is readily accessible from the Yamanote line or Ginza or Asakusa lines. - We used the Yamanote line and I was concerned about this for taking our luggage but fortunately we needed to do this on a Sunday and not during rush hour. My tip is if you’re taking luggage on a train or subway, go to the furthest car platform at the front or back end of the station as the cars in the middle or nearest the escalators/stairs will be standing room only packed while the end cars are much less busy and have seats available and plenty of room - to a greater or lesser extent depending on the time and day.

I just bought this Samsung UV Light/ Wireless Charger. I thought it would work like a charm but nope. I am wondering if anyone here has the PhoneSoap and if that works. If not then what Full 360 case works best? I am using an iPhone 12 Pro Max.

2024.06.01 04:07 djott3r Cleaning the top baffle plate for better movement and sealing

I will try to make this a bit more of a guide with photos when I open my firebox next, but I drafted this up via email for another member so wanted to post here as a starting point.
If your top baffle does not close properly it may be clogged with ash on the hinge side.
  1. Remove the flue cowling or push it out of the way and remove the grey top plate. Underneath there is a hatch with 12 or so bolts. These bolts have a tendency to break and shear the heads off, so be careful, use WD-40/CRC 5.56 and allow it to soak. Loosen half or quarter a turn, add more WD-40. Turn back and forward again working them loose with more WD-40 if they feel like they are binding. Another member on this group said he broke a few and had to re-tap the holes up a size so not all is lost if you break one, it is just more work to fix it.
  2. Remove the hatch and right in the front on the hinge side of the baffle plate there are two bolts on each side holding it in. Remove these with the same care as the other bolts and the baffle will come loose. With a bit of wiggling and getting the right angle, the baffle will come out. Vacuum and sweep everything you can, being careful not to damage the glass fibre rope. Clean the outside around the hatch opening as there will be what is left of the ceramic sealant.
  3. Put everything back in reverse order, adding copper or nickel anti-seize to all the bolts because you will likely have to do this again in 2 years time so make it a bit easier for yourself. Add a bead of ceramic sealant around the opening before putting the hatch back on top.
Gorilla 310ml Fire Cement Sealant (Bunnings about $20)
CRC Nickel Anti-Seize 75ml (Mitre10 about $22)
CRC 75ml Copper Anti-Seize And Lubricating Compound (Bunnings about $15)

Summertime is usually considered one of the most popular times to visit because of its warmer temperatures and longer days. Spring and autumn are also excellent seasons for exploring May Europe: both offer milder temperatures compared to summer without being too cold either. Additionally, there may not be as much competition for accommodation since fewer tourists tend to travel during those months. When creating your travel plan, you'll need to consider both the costs of flights and accommodation as well as other expenses like food and entertainment. Depending on where you're going and what activities you want to do, prices can vary greatly. For example, if you're looking for an upscale experience in Paris or Rome, expect to pay more than if you were just visiting smaller towns or villages.
To get the most out of your trip without breaking the bank, there are several things you can do. First, research different budget-friendly options such as hostels or Airbnb accommodations instead of hotels; also look at transportation alternatives like buses or trains rather than flying between cities. Additionally, make sure that when booking restaurants or attractions that there aren't any hidden fees associated with them. With some planning ahead of time — and maybe even some savvy haggling — you can save money while still having an amazing European vacation in 2023!

From charming Northern cities like Copenhagen and Amsterdam, right down to sunnier spots like Barcelona or Nice; wherever you choose to go there'll no doubt be some new words waiting for you along the way! As long as you've done your research into the native tongue of whichever country takes your fancy, then nothing should stand between your family and an amazing European getaway next year!
Are There Any Special Visa Requirements For Visiting May Europe?
Are there any special visa requirements for visiting May Europe? When traveling in a foreign country, it's important to know what the rules and regulations are. This is especially true when it comes to visas. Depending on where you're headed, obtaining the right type of visa can make or break your trip - literally!
The good news is that most countries in May Europe have very straightforward visa policies. In some cases, no visa may be required at all if you plan on staying in the country for less than 90 days. However, even if you don't need a visa, you should still check with the local embassy just to make sure nothing has changed since your last visit. Additionally, keep in mind that certain activities like working or studying will require an additional permit from the government.
It’s also worth noting that many countries offer tourist visas which allow visitors to stay for longer periods of time without having to apply for long-term residency permits. These can be invaluable if you want to explore multiple destinations during one trip and are great way to get around red tape associated with entering multiple countries within one region. So before planning your journey through May Europe this year, double-check what kind of paperwork is needed so you don’t run into any unexpected surprises along the way.
No matter where you go though, research is key! Make sure to look up all relevant information regarding entry requirements beforehand so your travels run smoothly as possible and you can kick back and relax while discovering new cultures and experiences abroad.
Conclusion
It goes without saying that visiting May Europe in 2023 will be an unforgettable experience. From the vibrant cities, to the rolling hills of countryside, there's something for everyone. With so many incredible places to explore, it can be hard to decide where to visit.
But no matter your choice, you're sure to have a great time. Accommodations and activities suitable for families with children are available throughout the region and speaking the language of each destination is not as difficult or intimidating as one may think. Best of all, visa requirements are straightforward, making planning your trip much easier than anticipated!
So if you’re looking for an amazing vacation spot this year - look no further than May Europe in 2023! Whether you choose city life or a countryside retreat; adventure or relaxation; old world charm or modern amenities – there’s something here for everyone. I guarantee it'll be a journey worth taking and memories worth keeping forever.

2024.05.31 23:00 Future_Ad_3485 Cold Case Inc. Part Three: New friends and Too Much Time Travel!

Letting myself in, Aunt Lilicana spun around her silver chair. Chewing on my lips, her bright lilac eyes brightened at the sight of me standing next to Marcus. Smoothing out our outfits, her hands clasped together the moment she rose to her feet. Her lilac suit swayed with each step towards me, her lilac waves bouncing around her waist. Fussing with her bangs, her sharp eyes examined my new wedding band. Clasping her palms around my hands, her eager smile had me averting my gaze to the fine marble floor. Gushing about me being married, my eyes took in the lilac walls with fine snow white accents. Clapping her hands in front of my face, a quick huh escaped my lips.
“You need to wake up and rescue your first member of your own little coven.” She announced with a big grin, my brow twitching with disbelief at her words. “I think if you run your own coven, you have a real shot at becoming the grand witch.” Struggling to hold my tongue, my aunt couldn’t be serious. Pressing my lips a thin line, the old lady had brought it up again. Dropping her hands, a sad smile dimmed her features.
“I don’t want any of that. Stop saying that shit like you are going to die.” I protested heatedly, Marcus showing off his ring by placing his hand on my shoulder. “Fine. I will start with a coven and a coven alone. If that goes well, I will consider your offer to become the grand witch.” Burying me in a bear hug, she spun me around. Sliding her hands to my flat stomach, tears welled up in her eyes. Marcus took a step back with his next question, panic leading him to grin ear to ear.
“So the next thing I would like to ask is about children. How many do you want and when can I expect them?” She queried seriously, her hands squeezing my cheeks. “Maybe this old girl wants to be a great aunt some century.” Pursing my lips, the subject wouldn’t die without an answer. Lowering her hands instead of giving my usual sarcastic retort, Marcus glanced around like he had never been here before. Useless, thanks for being useless in this damn situation.
“Within the year if we are lucky.” I answered with a bright smile, her hands clapping as she spun around the big space. “Information please. Please tell me there is no time travel inv-” Sliding over a time card with the date into my eager palm, her grin grew wider. Reading the date, a discreet fuck rolled off of my tongue. Smacking the back of my head, she shouted language. The medieval times were the most dangerous times to travel, witches got burned like freaking candles. Shivering for a second, the trauma of being burned at the stake had me shrinking back.
“There will be an auction to sell her and I need you to swoop in and save her.” She explained while opening up her closets of disguise, her proud gaze flitting between the nervous Marcus and my fuming self. “So when I say coven, I mean a little branch of mine personally.” Great, no pressure or anything. When she chose to retire, my coven would become the elite ones and become the council members. Selecting a couple of black cloaks and golden parrot masks, she pressed them into our chest. Curious as to what her plan was, an eager grin curled across her lips. Oh, how I dreaded that eager grin!
“I’d hate to ask but what is very thought process?” I queried with a cock of my brow, my politeness slipping for a second. “Judging by the wear and tear, these were uniforms and not a ball gown." Cupping my cheek, her smile grew more genuine. Sinking into the warmth of her love, my life was owed to her. Even with her flaws, her maternal bond made it worth it!
“You are going to be dressed as slave handlers. Get in and free them for me.” She spoke in a motherly tone, Marcus watching in wonder as I snuggled into her palm. “You remind me of your lovely mother. Hell, you have her sharp tongue. What I wouldn’t do to banter with her again. Be a dear and stay safe.” Pulling me out of Marcus’ earshot, her bear hug had me cuddling into her chest. A tender blush rose to my cheeks, her fingers twirling my hair around.
“Pride glows in my heart for how far you have come.” She whispered with a soft chuckle, her fingers twisting my hair into a simple side bun. “The moment a little witch comes into being, I would be honored to be the sweetest grandmother. That means you have a free babysitter. Get going, my dear." Hugging her harder, part of me didn’t want to go. It was her that took me in after my father died, my love for her being as true as it could be. Releasing me, her dainty hand spun me around. Sauntering over to her desk, the chair squeaked the moment she crashed down. Walking out with a genuine smile, these visits left me with a fuzzy feeling. Draping my cloak over my shoulders, Marcus’ nimble hand tied the silky ribbon. Brushing his lips against my forehead, his loving gaze had my heart fluttering. Don't say it, I mumbled to myself. My eyes rolled at his next words, the damn things were sure to come.
“So you can be nice.” He teased with a playful grin, my lips curling into a sly grin. “Don’t be like that.” Poking my nose, scarlet painted my cheeks. Fiddling around with my mask, a flurry of feverish kisses causing my breath to hitch. Sliding on his mask with a crooked grin, a graceful flick of his wrist had his cloak obscuring his identity. Plucking my mask from my hand, his lips grazed the top of my head as he slid it over my bright red face. Quit being a Casanova, damn it!
“I happen to think it made you look adorable.” He commented with a wink, dropping my pendant into my slick palm. “I for one want to have a certain type of fun tonight, if you catch my drift.” Catching his drift, my fingers flicked the card into focus. Holding onto my waist, my slender fingers began to spin the pendant clockwise. Clearing my throat, another adventure was to be had.
“I call upon the sands of time to whisk me away to the year thirteen twenty on the day of January twelfth.” I chanted boldly, the pendant spinning faster. The blast of energy knocked us into the stables of a gray stone castle, the majestic draft horses whinnying in horror. Dropping my pendant over my head, my magic usage would have to be kept to a minimum. Another cloaked finger stomped to us, his sharp tone pissing me off. Letting him yell at us, his grubby hands dragged into a beat up building. Pointing towards the sea of cages, our task was to care for the merchandise. Hiding my hate, we nodded with tired smiles. Crunching back into the snow covered courtyard, magical creatures of all kinds roared in cages. Running through the hall of cages, my aunt gave the name Sabaku Neko. The last name spoke of a human and demon hybrid, an idea coming to mind. Tapping my pendant twice, three illusion pearls shimmered in my palm. Expanding my dagger, a swift cut had blood coating the pearls. Rolling them onto the wooden floor, the cages creaked open. A unicorn trotted past me, a bow of its head opening up a portal to a sacred forest. Neighing sternly, the creatures leapt into the portal. Watching each one with alert expressions, the cages slamming shut with copies of the creatures glitching into life. A clattering can had me spinning on my heel, a flash of bright red hair catching my eyes. Spinning my dagger in my palm, a pair of emerald green eyes shimmered in the shadows. A gruff voice called for Marcus, his hands holding my cheeks. Lifting up his mask, his trickster grin had me worried for the person on the other end. Don't be daft on me, Marcus.
“Steal her away into the woods and I will meet you in a couple of hours.” He ordered with his signature wink, our target knocking over a pile of armor. Bouncing up to him casually, his club poked out of his sleeve. Rounding the corner, a cute witch with bright red cat ears and a matching fluffy tail cowered behind a wooden column. Crouching down to her level, the poor thing was shivering from the cold. Untying my cloak, her quivering eyes traced me draping the cloak over her shoulder.
“I am Gearz, your coven leader if you wish me to be.” I introduced myself with a kind smile, her tag twitching slightly. “Please follow me to safety. Trust me! I don’t bite.” Offering her my hand, her fingers curled around mine. One yank had her stumbling back, her feeble body seeming too weak to move. Placing her on my back, her arms curled around my neck. Darting between the shelves, Marcus chatted pleasantly with our boss. Pretending to trip, his double wink telling to run with her. Sprinting into a blizzard, a harsh cold lashed at my bare skin. Crunching through the snow until I couldn’t anymore, an abandoned home caught my eyes. Kicking the door open, a muffled apology had me glancing back at the witch I had rescued. Setting her down by the fireplace, a few old pieces of wood hit my feet. Arranging the wood while watching her shiver, a snap of my fingers had violet flames roaring to life. Plopping down across from her, my dagger bounced off of my legs. One could never let their guard down in such a time.
“My name is Sabaku Neko.” She choked out awkwardly, her eyes refusing to meet mine. “The one skill I have is being able to speak to animals. I doubt you would have me with that information.” Tracing her fingers on the floor, her kind gaze averted to the floor. Reading that she was ashamed of such a rare gift, kind words were needed. The floor protested as I moved until our knees met, my hands curled around hers. Such sorrow should not follow anyone.
“I would love that gift. Animals make excellent spies and friends.” I chirped cheerfully, her wet eyes meeting my genuine smile. “Join me if you wish. Together we can solve all kinds of crimes. Pigeons and such see the things I can’t see.” Ripping her hands back, hesitation lingered in her eyes. Shaking her head, too much trauma had occurred to her. Switching tactics, there had to be a way to get to her. Asking for her hands, her head shook. Holding my hand behind my back, a rush of air had my loose hairs floating up. Feeling a violet lily in my palms, this might win her over. Lowering her hood, a bit of life sparked in her eyes at me tucking the flower in her hair. Curling her fingers around the edge of my mask, anxiety built in her eyes the moment her hands ripped it off. Smiling cautiously in my direction, her fingers traced the faint scars on my face.
“Call me Saby if you want to be my coven leader.” She spoke almost too soft for me to hear, her smile growing brighter the moment she cut her palm with my dagger. “I vow to serve you as a faithful member of your coven.” Remembering to cut my own palm, the wet sound of blood splattering had nausea flipping my stomach. Holding my hand with a quiet laugh, her ears flicked with excitement at an inky pocket watch tattoo appearing on her chest. Lowering our hands to our laps, something about our bond had me brimming with joy. The door blew open, Marcus huffing with blood pouring from a wound in his side. Collapsing next to me, my shaking fingers pulling my pendant over my head. People shouted in the distance, Saby climbing onto my back while I pulled him onto my lap. Spinning the pendant clockwise, no words could come to mind. Speaking too late, a blast of energy shot me into the front of my house in the nineties. Cursing under my breath, something seemed off. Heavy footfalls crunched behind us, a quick healing spell sealing his wounds shut. Helping Saby off of my back, her protection would be necessary.
“Watch my husband for me. He should wake up any second.” I requested politely, her head nodding as whistled. Shivering with joy at saying the word husband, the bliss was short lived at an ogre jumping over my head. Throwing the necklace into the air, a quick spin had it landing around my neck. Flipping the dagger in between my fingers, his fate was sealed. Flicking my wrist, the dagger whistled into his left eye. Muddy sludge rained onto me the moment it boomeranged back to me. Nice touch, I pondered curiously to myself. Whistling sharply, his good eye narrowed in my direction.
“Come get me, big boy!” I called out while sprinting towards the park, the ground shaking with every stomp from his oily forest green feet. Skidding down random streets, the plan wouldn’t work if I didn’t show up first. Leaping over a wooden fence, my boots touched the lush grass I used to escape to on the bad days. Running over to the dugout of the local softball field, a fresh pile of dirt had me smiling to myself. Kicking at the loose dirt, my old witchcraft kit greeted me. Pulling the tired girl out, a devilish grin curled on my lips at the sight of my black iron case. Remembering that I took down monsters in the area, the kit was rich with what I needed. The ogre was new in this timeline, the tool wouldn’t be missed. My smile fell at what tonight was, a single tear cascading from my eye. Plucking the jade ball from the bottom, this spell would prevent me from going home until the early morning. Debating on winning this fight or reliving one of the worst nights of my life, the answer was clear. Cutting my palm, ruby coated the ball. The ball glowed to life, a sea of unfiltered energy trapping the ogre in place. Rising to my feet, my time window was dwindling. Jumping over the dugout, time slowed with every step. Green energy took out the ogre, the aftermath smashing me into the tree. Sliding the bark with a grimace, a ribbon of blood poured from the corner of my lips. Damn, a couple of organs must have burst. Wincing the moment I struggled to my feet, her guard dog of a demon friend pounded towards me. Blocking his club with my dagger, a swift kick shot him into the sky. Leave me alone, damn it! Nobody wanted to see the two of them.
“So you can fight.” Glanda mused with a scoff of disbelief, my brow cocking at her approaching me in a lovely emerald dress. “I am afraid you have me beat in that department. Then again, I am not a heathen like you. Gareth, kill her already!” Tossing him an emerald stone, green energy whisked her away. The ground rumbled the moment he landed in front of me, his Cheshire Cat grin spread as he bowed.
“Shall we have a fun duel, my lady?” He suggested with an adventurous tone, his club bouncing in his palm. A warm breeze blew the seeds of a dandelion in the air, something seeming off about the situation. Tugging at his leather jacket and jeans, guilt dimmed his eyes. Picking up on that he didn’t want to kill me, a witch’s mark burned on his neck. Mouthing an apology as he charged at me, his club striking the tree next to me. One should open up if they need help, otherwise receiving it would be a mere pipe dream.
“‘She canceled her mate's bond with me and placed this damn curse on me.” He cried out desperately, aiming his club for my head. “Please take me out and make me a part of your team. In order to do that, you have to nearly kill me. On the brink of death, I will vow to make you my master. Work with me!” Dodging his attack, my dagger spun in my palm. Hating myself for what I was about to do, my heart couldn’t deny his request. Hitting the dirt, his club smashed into my shoulder. Screaming brokenly into the still afternoon air, my left shoulder had been shattered to pieces. Unable to get off the dirt, violet energy built around my right fist. Waiting until he was inches from my face, my fist smashed into his chest. Bone crunched, the tissue giving off a sickeningly wet noise as I squeezed until inky blood ran down my arm. Begging me with wet eyes, Marcus called out for me in the distance. Throwing him down next to me, his wheezes sounded horrendous. This plan had better work!
“I vow to serve you as a faithful servant.” He wheezed with a serene grin, tears of joy gliding down his cheek as an inky pocket watch tattoo replaced his former mark. “What is this warmth?” Chuckling under my breath, violet light blinded me as time reversed his heart’s damage. Listening to the ribs click back together, Marcus towered over us, his eyes flitting between his new mark and me. Jealousy flashed in his eyes before he settled on a pensive expression, his mind working through what to say. Don't you dare blow it!
“Mind explaining a few things for me? Why is our former enemy part of our team? When can we go back?” He inquired with a sneaky irritated tone, the dirt crunching as Saby caught up. “You look like hell and you only look like hell when you have run out of your powers. Did he do that to your shoulder because if he did, he would die if it were up to me.” Understanding that he meant every word, Gareth shot out a million apologies. Marcus cut his palm in a chilly silence, his inky blood pooling in his palm. Sitting on my lap, his palms smeared his blood all over my shoulders while humming a demonic spell. Stopping at the first sign of dusk, the bones took a minute to click back into place. Clutching me close to his chest, his chin rested on the top of my head. Tears soaked the top of my head, the vulnerable side being a rare side of him.
“Don’t you ever pull this shit again or God help me. You are way too important to me.” He admitted between sniffles, his lips grazing my cheek. “When your aunt brought up having a family, it struck a nerve with me. My whole family died in front of me and I can’t have that happen to our children. You would like to have children, right?” Parting my lips to speak, tears welled up in my eyes. The younger version of me skidded into the park, my eleven year old self looking covered head to toe in fresh bruises and cuts. Marcus placed a simple invisibility spell on us to protect the timeline, Struggling to keep my composure, my rat nest of hair spoke of weeks of neglect. Digging my fingers into Marcus’ arms, my grubby father marched into view. Screaming at her while beating her with a belt, his rage wouldn’t stop. Horror rounded my friends' eyes, the shame of my past being played out in front of them sickened me. Ruby began to splatter his red face, the corner of my lips quivering as the color drained from my cheeks. Threatening to kill her, his screwdriver plopped into her palm. Getting too close for us to hear his words, the wet sound of the screwdriver sinking into his artery had her screaming out the moment he landed on top of her. Pushing him off, a crowd began to gather. Whispering among themselves, the dark rumors of how dangerous the family was began to swirl. Begging for help, no one offered her assistance the moment police showed up. A sleek lilac car squealed up, my aunt hitting them with a forgetting spell. Apologizing to my younger self, they began to seal off the scene. Guiding my younger self into her car, Marcus knew well enough to order the others to start hiking with him. Fighting back a fresh wave of tears, that day had been like any other. Placing me on his back, the others shot out quick yeses. Crunching into the treeline, we came upon a cave system within five miles. Shooting the others a stern expression, they wandered off to find firewood. Chewing on my lips, violent sobs wracked my body. Burying my head into his chest, he had to hate me at this point. Cupping my face, his comforting words were doing little for my shortening breaths. Wanting to run, my lack of ability to run away was the sole thing preventing me. Gripping his shirt, my grasp couldn’t get any stronger.
“Shhhh!” He whispered sweetly into my ear, his lips brushing the tip of my ear. “What I saw was a girl fighting for her survival and nothing else. I am sorry that happened to you and I understand why you hid it from me.” His words faded in and out as if he was underwater, everything doubling. Exhaustion weighed on my eyelids, a dark slumber stealing me away.

2024.05.31 20:05 BainshieWrites A Most Important Visitor

This is a [LF Friends, Will travel] stand-alone story, that assumes no knowledge of the setting.
------------------
[First] - [Prev] - [Next]
Date: 37 PST (Post Stasis Time)
Kelt’ch stared at the passenger list, his thorax starting to vibrate with worry as he looked down at the list of names in front of him. This couldn’t be right, this couldn’t be happening. Why here, why now? ‘Station Joreial’ was a Kirken station: small, rarely used, a bit of a dump that serviced a few of the lesser used mining stations. Mostly smaller merchants transporting materials and supplies… as well as a non-insignificant amount of criminal activity that existed here in the outer reaches of the insectoid species’ aura of influence.
All of those ships going to and fro provided an official reason for travel and an official passenger list. Within the list of ships providing travel plans over the next week, a single vessel stood out to Kelt’ch: a Terran vessel. Their official reason for visiting was transporting supplies to the various mining stations around the area, but the real worry came from the passenger list. 2 Terran crew members listed… one of which had a name that filled the Kirken reading it with terror.
Admiral.
“What’s wrong Kelt’ch? You look like you’ve seen a spirit.”
Kelt’ch looked up from the data pad he was holding, his wings fluttering with apprehension and antennae twitching from side to side as Parsk’l, the female Kirken he co-owned the station with, asked him the question.
“What’s wrong? What’s wrong!? Look at this, look who is visiting the station!”
The Kirken thrust the data pad into the face of the other while his three remaining hands were wrung with anxiety. Parsk’l glanced at it a moment, her head tilting to the side in confusion.
“Oh, we’re getting a Terran visitor. We recently joined their Alliance, didn’t we? That’ll be fun, what’s wrong with that?”
Kelt’ch gave an antennae swish of incredulity at that statement as all 4 feet of the insect looked back at her. How could she not see the problem?
“Ignoring the fact that Terrans are 6 feet of angry, terrifying primate from a world so heavy they could punch a hole through my chitin with their bare hands? It’s an admiral. Literally a top military man from a deathworlder species.”
“Huh, neat. Wonder why they’re coming here? Anyways, what’s the issue?”
The response from Parsk’l caused Kelt’ch to take flight a few inches off the ground in anxiety and annoyance, wings beating to keep the insect in the air as their four arms gestured wildly.
“What’s the issue?! What’s the issue?! You remember what a crap hole we own, right?! We don’t sweep too often because I’m convinced the dust is load bearing and keeping the entire station from breaking apart. When was the last time we got the grav generator serviced?”
“Well… I think that was a couple of decades ago when the service came free with the…”
“When did we last change the filters on the air filtration system?”
“It’s the first of the month right now, so… 10… 20…. When was the station built?”
“How much of the business passing through the station is illegal smugglers?”
“How can we really define illegal… OK I get your point. Maybe they won’t mind and will think it’s normal.”
Kelt’ch stopped flitting about, finally landing as he just stared at his business partner, anxiety giving way to an incredulous feeling, as if Parsk’l had said the most stupid of things.
“This is a top military mind of the Terrans. The last time someone pissed them off, they blew up one of the Hatil’s worlds!”
“Well the Hatil did declare war on them, and they kinda suck technologically. It won’t be that bad, right?”
“I’m not taking that risk!” Kelt’ch took on a more authoritative voice as he spoke, the change in demeanour suggesting action and a plan to be had. “We need to clean up, make sure everything is in tip-top shape, ensure nothing illegal is happening while the Terran is here… all in five days…”
All four of his hands held his head in despair as the size of the monumental task that lay ahead of the Kirken fully hit him.
God, the Terran Admiral is going to kill us.
—-----------------------
Kelt’ch could feel a silent rage building inside of him as he looked around the engine room. He’d not been down here in years, but the once shiny room was a travesty. The control panels and various diagnostic systems were somewhere under all of the mess, but every single surface was covered in… rubbish. Half worked on broken pieces of machinery, empty food containers and mould covered drinking glasses. The Kirken was lucky he could fly, otherwise he’d be wading knee-deep in the grime.
Even worse was the lack of… professionalism of the general working environment. Plastered all over the walls and various pieces of equipment were photos and stickers of a… not safe for work nature. At the centre of all of this sat the man who was supposed to be in charge, the Kirken engineer who was hired to maintain the station’s engines, seemingly unconcerned about the state of the room.
“What in the ever living scorch is all this!”
Kelt’ch’s voice rang out with rage as he stared upon the absolute disgrace that his station was in. Sure, Kelt’ch knew that the station was hardly a 5-star establishment, but this was… this was… there were no words for it.
“Dude, you need to chill, you’re harshing my vibe.”
Kelt’ch stared at the man who technically had the job title “Chief Engineer of Station Joreial’. Sure, the guy was cheap and had no real experience when he’d hired him 5 years ago, but this was…
“Are you high right now!”
“Ha ha, how can I be high when I’m not even flying… You look stressed, I got a little something for that, the guys down at the docking station got it for me.”
Kelt’ch felt like he was going to have an attack in at least one of his hearts, the stabbing chest pains increasing whenever he stared at the monstrosity that lay around him and the complete lack of care his engineer seemingly had.
“I’m stressed because this place is a mess, you are on drugs, and a Terran admiral is going to be here in five days!”
“Bro, don’t flutter dude. Terrans don’t exist, they’re an imaginary creation of the government to scare people into paying their taxes. That’s why I don’t pay tax to anyone.”
That was it, Kelt’ch flew over to the drugged out engineer, spinning the insect’s chair to face him as he screamed at the Kirken with the rage of a million suns.
“Terrans exist, and they are going to tear you apart with their deathworlder strength unless you fix this! I want this mess cleaned up, I want every log of every piece of maintenance done in the last two years, and get rid of these posters and stickers as well!”
“Duude, party foul!” The Engineer's antennae were twitching with worry as Kelt’ch was completely up in his face. “Those stickers are official engineer supplies, you can’t get rid of them.”
“That is not an Engineering piece of equipment. That is a sticker of a Kirken woman…. With her broodcapsule showing to the world!” Kelt’ch whispered the last part angrily. “Get rid of it!”
With that, the Kirken reached over to the offending sticker, tucking his insectoid fingers underneath the glue covered paper and starting to peel it off the console it was attached to. The room was plunged into darkness as the power went out, the sound of machines and various processes that kept the inhabitants of the station alive all going silent at once. A clicking clunking sound echoed through the room as the backup life support systems tried to spin to life, a few moments passing before those machines gave up, leaving the pair and every member of the station in the dark.
Slowly, with a feeling of dread and fear, Kelt’ch slapped the offensive sticker back where he found it, hoping that the life support systems would start running again. Thankfully, the lights turned back on with a lengthy stutter as the machines running the space station once again started to spin and churn.
“See dude, I told you that sticker was important.”
“Why is the entire ship’s power supply being held together with a sticker?! How long has this been going on!”
“Bro, it’s not just that sticker, it’s all the stickers. And like, it’s been working for two years, so who cares, it’s all good!”
Kelt’ch was suddenly a lot less concerned with the arrival of the Terran admiral, and a lot more concerned with the station exploding while he stood in it.
I know I haven't been paying too much attention to the nitty-gritty day to day running of the station, but is it really this bad?
“This is not good! Exactly what is wrong with the station that we have a load bearing sticker!”
“I dunno, it's kinda weird bro.”
“How do you not know! I hired you because you have a degree in Theoretical Warp Engineering, it is literally your job to know!”
“Dude, I said I have a Theoretical degree in Warp Engineering. Stop being so harsh dude.”
Kelt’ch was going to kill him. The Kirken was going to murder this supposed engineer. In a fit of rage he grabbed the idiot and lifted him out of the chair, wings beating furiously as he screamed at the fraud with every fibre of his being.
“You are going to clean this place up, you are going to work out what we need to do to fix this place, or by everything holy and righteous in this universe, when the Terran Admiral arrives I will feed you to the 6ft tall deathworlder primate! Do you understand!”
The quivering antennae on the ‘engineer’ stated that whatever drugs he was on, wasn’t enough to counteract the ‘harsh vibes’ that Kelt’ch was now giving off.
“I’ll… I’ll get right on that.”
—---------
Of all the places on Station Joreial, the kitchen was the closest to being decent. Before Kelt’ch had saved up enough to get into the world of investing and buy this station, he had worked in a variety of kitchens.
He didn't know much about engineering, or docking procedures, but he did know enough about kitchens to hire employees good enough to keep things running. It was probably the most important part of running a station: pilots and cargo haulers would forgive a lot of things if they coould get a decent meal and drinkable stimulants.
“So, listen up, we're going to be visited by the most important visitor this station has ever had in two days time.”
Two days. That's all he had left. The last three days had been a terrible blur of cleaning and trying to fix everything that had been left abandoned over the last decade.
Replacing the air filtration system filters had been a horrific task in claustrophobia, trying to test the emergency fire suppression system had caused a small fire, and Kelt’ch had discovered three janitors on the payroll who hadn't turned up for work for several years.
Still, the Kirken couldn't help but feel that he was starting to ‘win’ this battle.
“So, I want there to be the best platter we have to offer. I know you are all capable of making something to wow and impress.”
Kelt’ch could see a small amount of excitement building in the 5-man crew. The 4 Kirken and single amphibian Zorthian that made up the kitchen staff were all surprisingly talented for their place of work, and the chance to spread their culinary wings was one they didn't get often.
“This member is also a deathworlder, meaning even the dangerous stuff is allowed. Capsaicin, caffeine, arsenic, cyanide. I'm trusting in you all to give our guests the best meal he's eaten outside of his home planet!”
“Who is this mystery guest?” asked the head chef, antennae twitching with excitement as he asked.
“Our new galactic partners, a Terran. Large primate deathworlders, very strong, very powerful. Not only that, one of the pair will be an Admiral.”
The change in the demeanour of the cooking staff was immediate, the four Kirken losing all enthusiasm and glancing at each other with worry and fear. Each of them silently and without a word dropped whatever they were holding, and started to leave the kitchen, pushing past Kelt’ch in order to exit.
“Wait, what's wrong? Where are you going?!”
The station owner chased after the four, frantically trying to stop most of his kitchen staff from leaving as they made a beeline to the docking bay of the station.
“If you're worried about them being deathworlders, I've been told that they're perfectly safe! They don't eat people at all!”
At this his head cook turned to face Kelt’ch, his brief hopes that they were reconsidering abandoning their post dashed by the Kirken’s next words.
“Look, Kelt’ch, I'm gonna be honest with you because you're a real one. All of us have way too many warrants to be in the same system as an Admiral, let alone on the same station. If the job still exists in three days’ time then we’ll be back, but until then… I’ve got priors and missed court dates. I can’t be having an Admiral Deathworlder finding out about those.”
There was nothing Kelt’ch could say to the four as they took the first transport off the station they could, not even taking the time to retrieve their belongings, making good on their promise of placing as much distance between themselves and the eventual arrival of the Admiral, leaving the station owner alone and in despair.
With heavy hearts Kelt’ch made his way back to the kitchen, where the last remaining staff member stood, the Zorthian still silently doing prep work where he’d left him.
“Well, at least you’re still here.”
There was a moment as the amphibian looked up for a moment, confused, before fiddling with a device that sat in their ear.
“Sorry boss, did you need me? I had my translator turned off as I was listening to music. Did you say something?”
—--------------------
The day was finally here. Kelt’ch stood in the docking bay, his four hands being wrung together in worry as he watched the ship approach. The station was in… a passable state. The engines had been fixed to the point where he was relatively certain it wasn’t going to explode, catering had been ordered in to replace his kitchen staff, the Yult-mite infestation had been reduced to manageable levels, and the cargo haulers who had been running a Spice ring had been let go and driven off of the station. Kelt’ch had been awake for 5 solid days, and was only awake right now due to said Spice ring, but station Joreial was… passable. Not a 5-star establishment, not even nice looking, but… passable.
Maybe the Terran Admiral would be fooled.
Kelt’ch was alone as the Terran’s vessel docked, it’s name ‘Mostly Duct-tape’ painted on the side. Parsk’l had long since collapsed with exhaustion, leaving the single Kirken alone to greet the Admiral, but all gods be damned, he wasn’t going to fail at this last hurdle. The Terran’s ship was surprisingly small… ratty looking even, its paint fading and an outside that could have honestly done with a scrub down. Kelt’ch was expecting something far more grandiose, of silvers and golds, more like royalty.
Still, it did kind of make sense. The Terrans were a deathworlder species. They probably didn’t care for aesthetics and put a greater value in functionality. Maybe they’d be impressed with Station Joreial’s minimalist efficiency.
The door to the small vessel opened and Kelt’ch got to see his first Terran. They really were as scary as the descriptions made them out to be, towering over the average Kirken at over 6 feet tall. The primate that exited was wearing a spacesuit, but underneath the protective fabric he could clearly seethe powerful muscles that could tear through an exoskeleton like paper
The Terran stumbled out of his vessel, the flightless mammal taking a few steps down the exit ramp as they looked around for a few moments, before finally taking their helmet off. This was not what Kelt’ch was expecting…
Messy wild hair, an unshaven face, and bags under their eyes from a lack of self-care. Sure, Kelt’ch had never seen a Terran in the flesh before, but they had seen pictures of their diplomats and generals on the news. This figure did not look like them. This figure looked like 10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bag.
Confusion gave way to understanding as the Kirken remembered that the manifest had two names on it. Clearly this second person, a ‘Cameron Stanley’, was the Admiral’s bodyguard. Yes, such a rough individual made sense for a deathworlder tasked with protecting such an important person.
Kelt’ch flew over as fast as he could to greet the Terran, who was getting more and more confused. The Kirken had done their research, so Cameron had left his ship to a literal red carpet laid out in the middle of the docking bay, a small buffet of food placed to the side. Kelt’ch held out a hand in a traditional Terran greeting, which Cameron took and shook awkwardly, trying to blink past the absolute hangover he was nursing from the activities of the days before.
“Hello Terran delegate. This is station Joreial, and I am its owner, Kelt’ch. We are so glad you have decided to grace us with your presence.”
Cameron just stared blankly back at the strange insect, trying to look past his banging headache at a cargo bay which was just too bright.
“What?”
Kelt’ch paused for a few moments, before deciding that this bodyguard was clearly a man of few words, being a man of action. The Kirken guided an increasingly bewildered Cameron towards the buffet.
“The station is perfectly secure, safe and a state-of-the-art facility. You and your charge may enjoy this complimentary edible selection that I hope fulfils your deathworlder pallet!”
Cameron looked down at the selection of food laying before him. He gave an involuntary groan at the thought of eating in his current state. Just as well, since in an attempt to impress Kelt’ch had gone out of his way to procure deathworlder ready catering, making the vast majority of the food on offer very lethal to even Terrans.
“Oh I couldn't right now… but thanks!”
Another awkward pause, as both Terran and Kirken stood in silence, both waiting for the other to make the first move, a growing feeling of discontent emanating from both sides. Cameron was way too hung over to understand what was going on, so Kelt’ch had to break the silence first.
“So as you can see, everything is safe. Will the Admiral be exiting soon?”
“Who?”
The Terran turned back to look at his ship, confused, wondering if he'd picked up an extra passenger during the last week’s events, while Kelt’ch started to get worried that this was somehow a different Terran vessel.
“The second person on your manifest. An ‘Admiral CleansALot’.”
Cameron gave a laugh at that.
“Oh yeah! Well, this isn’t really his vibe. Little guy would get lost out here.”
“It really is no trouble, we can make sure that the admiral stays safe.”
Cameron gave another laugh at that, the idea of this insect protecting the Admiral making the Terran giggle, fading away as he realized the Kirken was being serious.
“Wait, you’re not joking? The Admiral can’t come out in this environment.”
There was a pause as Kelt’ch understood those words, the insect eventually deciding to get angry at them, insulted even. 5 days ago if he’d known the Admiral was too stuck up to even leave his ship, he would have been overjoyed. But after 5 days of tireless work… god-damn it he wanted some respect.
“What, am I not good enough to even be graced with his presence? I know this isn’t the best station or the most famous, but to not even give the briefest of greetings… It’s rather very rude, and shows the Terrans in a bad light.”
At this Cameron gave a single raised eyebrow, a smirk hovering over his lips.
“You want to see the Admiral? Sure. Just follow me and you can meet him!”
That was what they did, Kelt’ch following the Terran into his vessel, a dingy, dirty thing. Smaller than expected, lacking maintenance or care, a simple cargo hauler. If anything it was worse than the station, filled with empty beer cans and needing a severe deep clean. A small part of the Kirken’s mind was putting something together that this wasn’t right, but the annoyance of being snubbed by the Terran Admiral was clouding out that part of his judgement.
Finally, with an overactive flourish, Cameron pointed to the ‘esteemed’ Admiral, announcing him with an over enthusiastic and regal voice.
“Now introducing, for the station owner's pleasure, the honourable ‘Admiral CleansALot’!”
The cleaning drone trundled along the floor completely oblivious to the two people watching it, bouncing off of the walls as it did so, the tricorn hat taped to the top wobbling as it moved. Kelt’ch just stared at it for a moment, feeling all of the life drain out of his body as he watched the little mindless drone go about its cleaning.
“Is this a trick? This cannot be…”
“This is Admiral CleansALot. The ship wouldn’t run without the little dude, honestly he’s the real brains of the operation!”
Kelt’ch turned to look at the Terran, who was looking rather smug with himself.
“But why? I’ve spent the last five days doing nothing but getting ready for an Admiral to visit, and I find that you’ve given a cleaning done a military rank! But why?!”
The Terran paused for a moment, seemingly considering their next response.
“Honestly? It’s kinda funny.”
An unholy scream erupted from Kelt’ch’s thorax as the pressure of the last five days erupted in one moment. Maybe it was his exhaustion, maybe it was the illegal substances he was using in order to stay awake. But the Kirken did something he thought he’d never do, and launched himself in a rage at Cameron, trying to wrap his hands around the stupid primate deathworlder to throttle the idiot.

Stop naming cleaning drones with official military or diplomatic titles. It confuses people.

2024.05.31 19:08 roboheartmn LF Advice on Gaming/Productivity Build - and Picking a GPU!

I'd appreciate having some help on this build - in particular, with picking a GPU. Current build is at end of the post.
1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.
2. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?
3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: toweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
5. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.
6. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?
7. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-towefull-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
9. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free.
10. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?
11. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc)

2024.05.31 19:02 ca11umm Pre-Download Megathread

11 days to go people, 11. Holy shit, time has flown. Anyway, what up, how's things? I thought I'd do my best to collate some info in a single thread that no one will read and will still post the same questions that I've answered on new threads but anyway... here goes.

Travel

Arriving by Car / Bike / Drop off
Travelling by car or motorbike and wondering where you should be parking, or what route to take? Check this thread: https://www.reddit.com/downloadfestival/comments/1d2gz6p/car_parking_information_road_closures/
Also check the information on the Download Website and familiarize yourself with it: https://downloadfestival.co.uk/info-category/travel-info/
Please bare in mind this could all change on the day and isn't set in stone, as accidents happen that cause diversions and closures. Set your Sat Nav to Donington Park Circuit, DE74 2RP and once you see signage for download, turn your sat nav off and follow the signage which relates to the campsite you are staying in. Don't think you know a shortcut, or that a certain route was open last year because this may not be the case. As we have seen, there are new traffic management plans in place and we don't know exactly how strict things will be.
PS: Camping plus are general camping.
PPS: Guest camp/ Guest parking is not for weekend campers, these are allocated by bands / download themselves and are a guest of the festival. Not your Joe Public who has paid for a ticket on 18 monthly instalments on klarna. Hope that clears that up.
Public Transport
See this thread and website: https://www.reddit.com/downloadfestival/comments/1d3g3v3/public_transport_travel_guide/
https://www.trentbarton.co.uk/download2024
https://downloadfestival.co.uk/info-category/travel-info/

Tickets

Tickets should now be going live in your Ticketmaster account. Signal at the festival can be spotty however adding the tickets to your phones wallet eliminates the need for signal. So do that. Do it now if you can and then it's done.
If your ticket is not available yet, don't panic, they advise it could take up until 3 days before the festival. If its still not there, on the day of your arrival head to one of the box office's on site and they will be able to help you out.

Stage Times / Clash finder / Vendors

An email went out today (31/5) stating that Set times will be dropping in the app next week. So keep your eyes peeled for that.
IOS:https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/download-festival/id439568471?j=3664267&l=529\_HTML&u=198717163&mid=523016145&jb=9001
Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.greencopper.android.downloadfestival&hl=en_GB&gl=US&pli=1&j=3664267&l=529_HTML&u=198717164&mid=523016145&jb=9001
Clashfinder: https://clashfinder.com/s/download24/ (not 100% accurate yet)
Again, bare in mind things can change on the day so keep the app updated and notifications on for any updates, including secret sets.
In regards to vendors, we can expect that at a similar time to the set times and again, will be in the app.

What's the weather gonna be like?

We don't know, the met office don't know, accuweather doesn't know. Veterans of download will tell you stories of how the weather can change on the tip of a hat.
Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

What time can I arrive?

5-day ticket holders can access the campsites from midday Wednesday (Car Park 9am)
3-day ticket holders can access the campsites from 10am Friday (Car Park 7am)
This information was posted on the Download Facebook page. We have no other information than this at the present moment.

Will I have phone signal / Is x network better than y?

This varies year on year. Some people will swear that Vodafone is the best, others will say it was dogshit.
Signal is usually best early morning, when the arena first opens and during bands sets. As soon as everyone is in one confined area connecting to the same cell tower, it just shuts down and overloads.
Set a meetup point with friends in the event someone gets lost or can't find you. Alternatively use What 3 Words.

Alcohol Limits

Yes, its true, you can only bring in 1L of spirit or wine in a plastic bottle AND 24 Cans/Plastic crate of beecider or drink of choice PER TRIP
Thats the information we have, we dont have anything more than that. We don't know how strict its gonna be. But its safe to assume that it will be strict as its a stipulation added by the local council and to the festivals license.

Can I bring cash?

You can but you wont be able to use it. The festival is cashless and use contactless. No RFID wristbands like 2015.

Will X Campsite have space when I turn up at 17:42?

We don't know. It's a case of turning up and seeing for yourself.

What Campsite Do I go in / Am I allocated a campsite?

For general camping you are not allocated a campsite and can enter any of the coloured campsites on the map
This is either Red, Orange, Purple, Green, Black or Blue.
The other camps require different tickets to enter or prior applications (eg. Mini Moshers, Quiet, Eco Etc.)
I think that should be the main points. Again, use this as a sort of megathread and please utilise the search function. Chances are your question has already been answered somewhere on the sub or in this thread.

2024.05.31 17:37 MD1990X Trying to create the best skirmisher ever

So some of you have seen my posts maybe and I'm getting ever closer to my goal. I'm curious to see if people are interested and to get feedback about what they may like or dislike - from being a life long video gamer, I've delved into the world of board games and didn't realize that my favorite genre will also be such a massive undertaking of a project to get what I want. So without further ado, here is a summary of what I'm attempting and I'm curious if you think you'd be down to play it.
First maybe I'll start with what I personally don't enjoy about the genre of skirmishers/dungeon crawlers. Mind you my game is going to be solely focused on its first itteration to be PVP - or co-op pvp (2v2) but there seems to be a lot of overlap Dice+Moar dice = the effect that comes up in cmon games and many others - I find this to be very lame, not all that tactical, and kind of a cop out for having unique status effects like crowd control, various buffs and debuffs. No modifiers to the dice, or just a rerol = Rerolls are better than nothing but my game atm has the ability to +/- a dice instead of just modify, the modifier is also setup as push your luck where you have to do it pre-roll. I played hero to slay and I liked the modifiers but then as the rules are laid out, you do them after the roll and can just keep adding or subtracting til you run out or win the "bid war" between you and another player. Cards only and static damage = I like dice, my game features a D4 as the majority damage/heal dice and a d20 that modifies your attack and defense.
1 Dimensional characters - My character design will be more, individual hero based, each hero has 5 abilities and can equip 6-7 pieces of gear, and have 2 consumables. All cards have a modifier like +/- d20 rolls, +1 damage, -1 damage, +1 movement, Heal 1, etc. Each hero ability can be morphed for 1-2 options to flesh out their playstyle for that fight. The gear cards can increase stats (Hp, Movement, Range, Attack, Defense) have an ability, and the latest version features a "mastery" which is like a mini quest on the piece of gear that unlocks an additional bonus or a new Keyword Status Effect.
Very dynamic combat - The combat is currently on hexes likely to revert back to squares to have even more position options, but at the moment the combat is dynamic and easy as you go along. There is 3 combat phases, Phase 1 engaged (in range to perform an action already you cannot move), Phase 2 is melee movement and actions, Phase 3 is ranged movement and actions. This acts to give an element of time to a turn based game. Players also have instant and counter abilities ( all abilities are either, an ability, and instant, or a counter) so you're not just sitting waiting for your turn.
The outcomes from the attack and defense rolls also allows players to move themselves & opponents on "crits" or move themselves on "evades". This makes a big difference in phase one and trying to get to and from objectives - there are also cards that act like "attacks of opportunities" allowing you to do a small bit of damage and possibly apply an effect when enemies are moving through your attack range.
All phases also have an initiative roll for each side and then just go back and forth - but this makes it so you can attempt to devise a great plan, but may not get the first move, or in situations - force you to act first when you would have rather waited.
I'm trying to innovate innovate innovate as best I can as many of the games I find one dimensional, either by low amount of equips, lame character effects or just very few abilities.
The spirit of this creation came from playing MOBA's for almost 15 years - BUT DON'T GET CONFUSED - I'm really just focused on the character engine building aspect of hero's - I find many games that even mention moba in their board game description get so bogged down with the mechanics and rules of towers/minions/base racing - but that isn't why people play MOBAS over and over with infinite replay value - its the hero development, the other things, in my opinion are just a means to an end of making the heroes fight each other.
It also came from my desire to want to like games like D&D, or even games like Gloomhaven or Massive Darkness 2 - but they're just SO DAMN HEAVY and theres so many pieces required to setup. I'm going something that, relative to the genre, sets up fast, you can play, and in about an hour you can quickly box it all back up or play another match with different heroes potentially drafting different items from the "store" This just doesn't really seem to exist, or if it does, it seems done in a very lame way. Deck builders devolve into card counting, or ameritrash MOAR DICE just feels like more chance, but it's intended to be viewed as some cool new ability.
I've got about 1000 hours into this so far and just studying elements of design and researching similar games to see the pro's and con's - currently really enjoying Knightfall, and although the characters are a bit 1 dimensional and its only cards, it still sets up fast and the characters feel unique enough to play it a couple times.
My long term goal is to create a system, more than just a game - so that like other MOBAS, I can release expansions simply in the form of - a new hero, that brings in new items inspired by their kit or possibly a new keyword spell type. Then just like your favorite moba, you can play over and over and over again, using different hero combinations, creating different "builds" but not needing to learn an entirely new system or an expansion that turns it into a 6 hour experience. I will likely make a PVE component within the world as once the hero and item system is set, it'll easy port over to a PVE experience, but reviews would suggest that what made Knightfall sort of flop in reception was that it was "PVP AND CO-OP AND A PVE CAMPAIGN" and the PVP is awesome but the PVE kind of sucks and seems to have only lost them points and confused their audience, so until I really get peoples buy in and do a few character expansions it'll be SOLELY PVP focused.
I've said it to people at times that I want to - "the magic the gathering of skirmishers" - basically, being able to create a system that allows for ongoing release of new heroes and new items with new keywords and combinations - in a system thats heavily focused on making sure nothing is broken or can be "meta gamed" too hard.
These are lofty ambitions of a new designer - but I've innovated a lot through research, designing in canva and learning some basic CAD. I'm trying to innovate to make room for seemless deep design, vs just cut things out as it seems many games go that route and I find it bland.
All that being said - if you made it this far, would this excite you? Would you want to buy new expansions in the form of new heroes/items that you can add to the game? Do you feel the same way about the current state of skirmishers? (either waaaay too big of a setup and long play time - or just watered down and too simple, aka really only 3-4 effects and thats it)
I'd love to know your thoughts on this or any things you love or hate about skirmishers - I'm really trying to open the genre up so that more people are open to playing them, even if they just pick the same hero for 3-5 games until they get comfortable in the system.
