Fumigation food

My cat's poop stinks SO badly

2024.05.31 11:48 Virtual-Ebb-9626 My cat's poop stinks SO badly

I got my 8 month old kitten a few weeks ago. She eats like a champ and is hydrated. But oh my fucking god does her poop stink. I think I just give her too much variety with her food. I feed her TikiCat baby, and Weruva kitten food (both wet foods). I hope making her diet more consistent will fix this because her poop's stink actually fumigates the entire room, and then travels beyond. Even if I scoop it. Even if a fan is running. Even if a window is open. it stinks *so* badly. So badly that at 5:00 am I have to scoop her box because she dropped a massive bomb only to return to the room still smelling horribly bad.

2024.05.30 18:45 Medical-Shock-4538 Out of control attorney

I have a small pest control company and I have an attorney who is harassing me online, suing me over expired food and has told many people that he is out to get me and won’t stop until he does!
I was hired by an association to tent the community. On the day that his fumigation occurred Mr Katz left food in the garage, the fumigator noticed that there was conduit attached to his garage and advised that he must remove the food. Mr Katz said he would not leave the premises due to the fact that he was told the food could stay in the garage. Which is true. However the fumigator saw the connection between the 2 structures and deemed it unsafe, we tried to explain this to him but he was extremely uncooperative. With other elderly homeowners in the middle, the association asked me to bag his food with nylofume bags. We did. Post tenting I called Mr Katz and let him know that his home was safe for re occupancy. Immediately after the phone call I walked the property to make sure the crew had not left any trash and as I walked past his property I noticed a box of food in the front doorway. As per the vikane label we are to remove any food or medication from the structure if it has been fumigated. I picked up the box and removed it from the structure. Mr Katz then called the association and alleged that I stole the food. We have tried to reason with Katz but he is dead set on hurting me any way he can. He has now served me in county court and has told several people that he did this purposely so that I can spend the $15-$30,000 to defend myself. I don’t have the money and as you may know a small buisness is very difficult to manage and keep up. This attorney is out of control and absolutely abusing his power as an attorney. I spoke with an attorney who happened to be a friend of his and told him that he specifically set up the lawsuit in this manner to run me out of buisness. I have been doing this for almost 15 years and have never had this problem.
Ultimately it was his job to properly prepare and we did everything we could to help and make sure that all were safe when they would return. He is under the impression that we did things intentionally to hurt him and that is definitely not the case. We have signed documentation, pictures to show that we did not destroy his property or food and to make this even worse the box of food was 90% expired by 5 years or more!!!

2024.05.25 11:26 Ok-Restaurant7175 Experiences with Barusan

I'm hoping for advice on what I can/cannot leave in my bedroom when using a Barusan fumigation canister.
I think I have a dust mite infestation and need to fumigate the room. The online help videos suggest removing so many things before you set the canister off: all electronics, art, valuables, food (of course), toiletries and 'luxury' clothes. It is mainly the clothes I am stuck on because I have an open railing as a wardrobe and I'm quite certain if the mites are on the wall next to the clothes they are on the clothes themselves. My clothes aren't exactly 'luxury' but I have silk, wool, cashmere, linen, all sorts. Most can't be washed above 30c and definitely cannot be machine dried which is the only way to kill the mites. So I want to fumigate them to be safe from further infestations but wonder what sort of damage this does.
Has anyone used a barusan cannister in their bedroom? If so, what did you leave in the room (that survived)? Otherwise, is there a different product anyone can recommend to put on clothes so I don't have to fumigate them or boil them?
For full info, I have the バルサンプロEX cannister that you add water to.
Thank you for your help!

2024.05.23 21:45 TheMormyrid4 Larder beetle infestation. PLEASE HELP.

Ugh.
I thought I had a clean house, but lately I've been finding small larder beetles. It started with seeing one here and there. This morning, I found LARVAE in my cats' food bowls. I read online that seeing larvae means you have an infestation.
I am FREAKING out. How do I clear the infestation? I have a parrot and cats, so pesticides are out, I'm assume. I really can't afford to, like, move out of the house to get it fumigated.
I cleaned all the cat food bowls, vacuumed the already vacuumed house by paying close attention to crevices and corners, and locked the cat food in an air-tight container. What else can I do!?!

2024.05.23 21:02 Daetra Rats aren't falling for snap traps and glue traps. Do I need to fumigate?

For a few months now I've been slowly killing off a rat infestation. It was going well until recently. Snap traps baited with peanut butter and dog food are being avoided. Glue traps were working until they avoided them, too.
Rats are pretty freaking smart and now that they know about the dangers, I'm not sure if they'll fall for them anymore. Should I go nuclear and fumigate?

2024.05.21 07:52 Honor_post Spices Board of India Steps Up Compliance Inspections at MDH and Everest Plants

Spices Board of India Steps Up Compliance Inspections at MDH and Everest Plants
In an effort to ensure that Indian spice exports meet international standards, the Spices Board of India is conducting inspections at MDH and Everest processing plants. These inspections aim to address compliance issues and improve the safety and quality of spices being exported, particularly following recent concerns about pesticide residues.

Officials also pointed out that every country arrives at a different residue level as it depends on the dietary choices.
Recent Concerns Over Ethylene Oxide (EtO)
The move comes after health authorities in Hong Kong and Singapore raised alarms about ethylene oxide (EtO) levels in spices from MDH and Everest. On April 5, Hong Kong advised against consuming four specific products from these brands due to EtO contamination. Shortly after, on April 18, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) recalled Everest’s fish curry masala for similar reasons, deeming the EtO levels “not fit for human consumption.”
International Standards and Compliance
The Commerce and Industry Ministry provided data on Maximum Residue Levels (MRL) for EtO, highlighting significant variations across countries:
  • Singapore: 50 mg/kg
  • European Union: 0.02 to 0.01 mg/kg
  • Japan: 0.01 mg/kg
  • United States and Canada: 7 mg/kg
  • Hong Kong: EtO is completely banned in food products
Despite these strict standards, the ministry noted that 99.8% of India’s spice exports in 2023–24 met international quality requirements, with only 0.2% of consignments being non-compliant.
Addressing the Issue with Technology and Best Practices
Officials are exploring several measures to prevent future non-compliance, including:
  • Steam Sterilisation Technology: A method to reduce microbial contamination.
  • Supply Chain Tracking: Enhancing traceability to ensure quality control throughout the production process.
Understanding Ethylene Oxide
Ethylene oxide is commonly used as a fumigant in the food and pharmaceutical industries. When not properly aerated, it can react with chlorine in food particles, forming 2-Chloroethanol, a potentially harmful substance. However, if correctly managed, EtO does not pose a significant health risk.
Global Regulatory Landscape
The complexity of global regulations for EtO residue levels is evident. Different countries set their own standards based on dietary habits and health assessments. For example, while the CODEX Alimentarius, under the World Trade Organization (WTO), provides international guidelines, developed nations often impose stricter limits.
Evolving Testing Methods
Testing methods for EtO vary globally, leading to inconsistencies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, discrepancies in test results, including false positives, highlighted the need for harmonized testing standards. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is still assessing the toxicity of 2-Chloroethanol, further complicating the regulatory landscape.
Balancing Regulation and Business
Officials stressed that regulatory measures must balance safety with economic impacts. Excessive regulation can increase business costs and hinder trade. Consequently, India focuses its stringent regulations on major export markets like the EU.
India’s Spice Export Landscape
India’s spice exports reached $4.25 billion in 2023–24, up from $3.7 billion in the previous year, holding a 12% share of the global spice market. Major exported spices include:
  • Chilli Powder: $1.3 billion
  • Cumin: $550 million
  • Turmeric: $220 million
  • Cardamom: $130 million
  • Mixed Spices: $110 million
  • Spice Oils and Oleoresins: $1 billion
Conclusion
The Spices Board of India’s proactive inspections at MDH and Everest plants signify a strong commitment to maintaining high standards in spice exports. By adopting advanced technologies and improving supply chain practices, India aims to continue its growth in the global spice market while ensuring the safety and quality of its products.

2024.05.21 02:10 Reasonable-Berry-579 When petty revenge hilariously backfires.

I (female) met my former best friend (female) in middle school when she moved to my state mid-year. She came from a lot of money and was downgraded to our lower middle class town when her dad was arrested for drugs and they lost everything. Being the rich new girl, she was shunned by most of the other students. I decided to be her friend on purpose and we were like peas and carrots for many many years. Our children are even cousins as she had two children by my ex-brother in law. She never really grew out of the spoiled child phase and threw tantrums all the time treating everyone like crap. She was so prissy that she thought it was the most disgusting thing in the world to fart, a normal bodily function. I never farted around her and I never heard her fart even once.
Being a people pleaser, I put up with a lot of disrespect as well as actual abuse from her over the years and made excuses because of her upbringing. At one point my two children and I were renting an unfinished basement from her and her husband while I was in between places. During my short stay, she stole from me multiple times and would get irate if I confronted her. One time she actually got mad at me for not calling her names when we fought like she did. I think she wanted to feel better about treating me like shit by getting me to treat her like shit as well, which I wouldn't do. Things finally came to a head and I decided I had to get out ASAP before my kids witnessed any more of her dysfunction. When she found out, she started physically assaulting me knowing I would not fight back because she was pregnant at the time with baby daddy #3's child. The cops were called and I packed up what I could for the night and left with my kids.
We made arrangements with her husband, a decent man, for a time to come the next day to collect the rest of my belongings. I had my two brothers help me get a small moving van and get my belongings and move into my new apartment. Knowing she would at least steal from me while I was out of the house, I wanted a way to get revenge that wouldn't result in anymore law enforcement encounters.
(BTW she not only stole all of my sweaters and all of my jewelry making tools which was worth about $,1500, but she stole my kids video games. She also dumped all of mine and my kids clothes into garbage bags with all my liquids stuff like lotions and shampoos and food etc.)
So we came up with a plan to eat garlic, chili, egg burritos for breakfast so that by the time we were at the house lugging and moving heavy items, we would be fumigating her house as we go. A little crop-dust going away present. I dare her to call the police on farts!! I envisioned her getting so grossed out that she would vomit, you know being pregnant and having a heightened sense of smell and all.
The next morning we were all on board and ate decent size portions of the pungent burrito concoctions early in the morning. As the bubbly-guts started to kick in we were excited to spread the love. But apparently our digestive systems didn't get the memo in time. Oh no, the fallout didn't begin until late afternoon (the hottest part of the day in mid July) when we arrived at my new apartment. So every trip to and from the hot boxed moving van of death was like tear gas training for the swat team; hurry in holding your breath and hurry back out. It smelled like the ass end of a dead skunk. Like someone puked, re-ate it and puked again. Being the person I am, I believe that farts are endless hours of fun and entertainment for the whole family as long as you don't shit yourself. Between the gut wrenching and quick steps to the bathroom, we were laughing so hard at ourselves it only made us fart more. I can only imagine what my new neighbors were thinking when they saw and probably heard our butt rhapsody and rolling giggle farts the whole time.
In the end I decided I had best just teach my kids that revenge is never the answer because it never really works out how you expect it to and sometimes it might make you shit your pants.

2024.05.19 21:50 madkandy12 Should I just give up and do it myself?

Context: I have this roommate (20M) named J. He’s in love w me and I’m not. I’ve told him over and over I’m not interested and we can sleep together and not date but he’ll just cry and basically force me into this weird limbo relationship thing we have. He basically freaks the fuck out if I hang out w other men, sleep w other people or leave the apt/go out without him. He tries to convince me to never leave the apt without him bc he’s worried. He guilts me into staying or being late bc he can’t sleep or eat alone.
Issue: We have roaches. Fucking disgusting. It’s mostly due to the neighbors but we still have them. The apartment complex has fumigated 4 times now and they keep coming back bc J and our other roommate C (24M) just don’t clean up or keep the standards the fumigators tell us to keep which are no food out and mop daily for 2 weeks btw.
J and C really don’t seem to mind the bugs as they’ll see some, shrug and walk away. Not even spray them. Ive made a cleaning schedule that they don’t follow no matter how many times I ask. They don’t take the trash out till I ask aka when it’s literally overflowing with bags of trash on the side of the actual trash can. J will take the trash out when I’m in the kitchen w him to show “how much he helps out around the house”They don’t wipe the counters off after they make food. Just leave the crumbs and the counter sticky etc. basically roach heaven up in here.
I’ve been caulking the gaps everywhere around the apt, baseboards, under counters, drawers, cabinets etc. to stop the roaches from coming in. I’ve also been organizing, decluttering, deep cleaning behind/under, creating itineraries and caulking every gap I see for everywhere. I do the itineraries bc we all have really bad object permanence and rebuy a lot of stuff. I’ve been doing this for every single place in the apartment. Im a full time student w a part time job working in an elementary school. A lot of my free time is either hw or creating lesson plans and activities for my students.
I’ve been asking for help but I get none then they get mad at me for not telling them explicitly what to do. I don’t think I should have to baby step these grown men into caring about living in roaches but okay. I asked J to clean out, organize, make an itinerary and caulk the main cabinet bc I had midterms to study for and I couldn’t go to the schools library bc there was a shooter threat and I was scared lmao so I biked to the city library. Also, he’s like 6’2 and can reach the top and back and I can’t. First thing he asked was, “you can’t reach it w the stool?” Lmao. The entire time I was explaining he kept brushing me off and saying “I got it, I got it”. Making me feel like I’m over explaining and being annoying so I left to the library to do midterms.
I came back and he just reorganized everything, made a general map of where stuff it (this square is snacks, this square is Tupperware etc) and only caulked the bottom shelf that’s on the ground. He didn’t wipe down the shelves that are covered in roaches and roach shit. He didn’t caulk the shelves or the outline of the cabinet. He didn’t make an itinerary. He showed me the cabinet all proud and I voiced my concerns about how he literally did it completely wrong and how he’s gonna have to do it again. I told him, “I told you exactly what to do and told you to call with questions. Why didn’t you call me?” His excuses were: “the bugs can’t get into the cabinet through the shelves if they bottom is caulked off” “I couldn’t find the paper for the itinerary” “I didn’t know you wanted me to wipe the shelves out” “I didn’t wanna bug you” “I forgot what you said”
He literally wrote down this little map on a notebook. He said, “I use this for school, I can’t use this one” but he literally just did?
He basically shut down and ignored me so I had to ask, “did me criticizing the cabinet hurt your feelings?” he said yes and I had to hold him and explain that when criticize it isn’t an attack on your character, I just need it done. I can’t do it all. I explained my frustrations bc I told him explicitly what to do and asked why he didn’t do it and he said he forgot. I said, “why didn’t you write it down” he said, “bc I thought I got it” when him forgetting is a consistent problem. I asked why he didn’t call me and he said, “I didn’t wanna bother you, I got it”. I said, “you obviously didn’t have it. Why didn’t you just do it, why do I have to ask you? If there’s dead roaches and roach droppings where we put our food, why do I have to baby step you through wiping that out?” He just said he didn’t know he was supposed to do it.
We have this exact same conversation about 3 times a month?
1) please take initiative with literally anything, having to ask is exhausting. If something needs to get done, just do it. I shouldn’t have to ask for simple household things like fix the rug if the dogs scratch it up
(Quick story about the rug: I tried to “test” if J or C would fix the doorway rug bc it was messed up, kinda in a ball bc the dogs scratched it and moved it. You couldn’t open the door properly bc of the rug. A simple household “no one’s fault” task that affects us all. They didn’t fix it for a month. I counted the days. I was very frustrated and asked why they literally don’t do anything at all unless I baby step them. I asked, “why don’t you guys just do something that you see needs to get done?”. J blew up at me saying, “why do you expect us to do everything? Why didn’t you fix the rug, they’re your dogs. You live here too so don’t get mad at us for not fixing a simple thing when you didn’t do it either”. I fixed the rug and continue to fix the rug now.)
2) when you face a barrier please try to find another way to solve the problem instead of giving up such as, asking me, googling it etc
Anyways, this was about a week ago and he still hasn’t redone the cabinet even tho I’ve asked everyday. I’m so tired. J and I been living together for like 2 years and no matter how much I cry, ask, put sticky notes, text, call etc etc, nothing changes. It’s like having children. I’m so tired, like legitimately. I wanna give up. I’m tired of the same conversations over and over. I rather just do it by myself but idk if I should give up.
Should I try to hold him accountable for the upkeep of OUR apartment or should I just shut up and do it myself?

2024.05.19 21:32 Professional-Act-812 Grain mites in kitchen

I think I have grain mites in the kitchen from a bag of dog treats. Since i found out i tried to fumigate the kitchen and called pest control to spray after that. Also ive took out all the food from the kitchen and did a deepclean for like 6 hours. Next morning found a few of them wlking around on the airfryer. How to deal with them hiding in airfryer and stuff which also have been fumigated and others. What to do more than continue cleaning and keeping food out of the kitchen and for how long should i keep this up. Its really taxing on us and hard to focus on our lives.

I have a bundle of peak refuel, alpineaire, and mountain house adventure meals. All are freeze dried, air tight sealed foods that I taking on camping trips and just add water to heat and rehydrate before eating. I did not double bag them as I had them packed away during the fumigation and just found them.
Wanted to ask if these are still edible, especially with the air tight seal and material used in the pouches? Hoping these don't have to be tossed out.

2024.05.18 09:45 FantasticConflict140 Invisible biting bugs & hard tiny white bug 411

I decided to start a topic as a resource to everyone dealing with this.
I have recently reached out to an insect department at a university. No reply yet. I encourage everyone to do this so maybe someone will help. This has happened to me several times. I'll share what I have learned although now I'm dealing with some I can't rid myself of after my child left a window open for days in the desert. This is at least what I suspect happened. 1. They come with sand and dust from outside. Tropical, desert climates. They also piggy back airline, movie theatres, buses. I've picked them up in each. We had a roof put on in a remodel project and they were also unleashed while in Ft Myers, Fl 2. They hate cold. 3. There are 2 types: true invisibles and the tiny hard ones that look like microscopic salt and yes seem to attack and fall from nowhere. They love cotton, leggings /spandex, any support material. They also like oil and lotion. 4. Bed bug covers with fabric will attract them. They get into the fabric of those. Use plastic cheap covers on beds and pillows. If you get new beds or pillows leave that retail packaging plastic on! Its so thick and sturdy. 5. Bombing has always worked to kill them for me. This is the first time its only lasting a few days. First infestation in this house. Im moving next month and so terrified I'll have to toss most of the fabric items so I don't infest my new home. But I also took all the plastic off all the mattresses smh because it had gotten punctured in moving. I have kept plastic on for years whenever I purchase things because of the risk of these things. I'll probably have to toss it all before our next move. 6. They usually do drop off as soon as you leave your home. This time that isnt happening completely. It's like they sense outdoors. I used to be able to sleep in a car if I was on vacation or they got in my house. 7. Bomb your car too. 8. They hate cold so bag your travel clothes and leave them outside if its winter. 2 weeks they die. 9. Mouthwash, vinegar, even OFF will keep them off for a while. You might get sleep. 10. They will get in ears. This is the first time I have had this happen. A few drops of oil or safe materials to wash them out will work to flush them out. 11. They will show up as trichimoniasis! It wont be. But er and labs only see an unknown parasite and thats what diagnosis will be. Especially if you get them from beach towels. If they get into your vaginal area they can cause itching and discharge. Using a boric acid suppository usually kills them and wards them off. They will get in your crack too. On the beach, use towels you can toss.
  1. Using powder seems to actually kill them on skin like baby powder. If you have baby powder rub it and you'll get a little long term relief through the night.
  2. They get in hair. Oil makes them bite more. Wash often. Sulfur shampoo or scentless helps.
  3. Fogging is all that works. D. EARTH wont kill these. Idk why. The Fog cans in stores use a tiny amount now so you'll need at least 1 can per room. Clean up everything off the floor and open closets, drawers, pantries. Put porous food and containers in the fridge or freezer. Spray kills on contact but does nothing once it dries.
  4. These are obviously a parasite that have not been identified. Thousands of global forums & people suffering and not one insecticide company even researching it is weird.
  5. You can use double sided tape, tape, scrape and collect to collect samples. They are visible I have read. I recently started rubbing my hands on the bed and pinching them up and collecting them in a baggie in hopes someone will study them some day that can help us. This is my first time getting the white hard ones.
  6. They do not bite the whole household. They seem prone to biting people with blood issues and women. But they will still infest the entire family. They do bite! So if they are mites, then there is a biting mite.
  7. I'm typing this going insane. They will attach to clothing hanging in your closet.
  8. They will infest someone elses home through a visit. Even hotels. They seem to mate and populate overnight. I've brought them in from the beach on towels on vacation and by nightfall the room is infested! No these are not sandfleas though they seem to live in sand as well.
  9. They can live well over a month without a host they bite.
  10. Bites will be tiny red dots or tiny puss bumps. So yes these bite!
  11. You are not crazy. Thousands of us have dealt with these for years.
  12. If you can afford a tent over your house to fumigate everything, and bombs did not work...use it. We did this after the roof replacement and it solved the issue.
  13. The white dots all over your dark clothing are them. They don't seem to move but they are everywhere.
  14. They can cause nosebleeds and congestion. My kids aren't being bit but they have nose bleeds and stuffy noses. I hope this helps. I really haven't had an infestation this bad. I honestly never even saw them til this time. I usually kill them in one bombing. I have fogged twice! Only had mild relief. I think the older ones have the hardest shells and more visable. Im going to try the cheap plastic bags and if that doesnt work I'll have to dump anything fabric. Coated everything in d earth and that didn't work with these. Used sprays and repellants and get just a day of partial relief. Also I believe steam might work so I'm going to try that on my more expensive furniture. I don't want to donate if it will spread. I already did that with goodwill not thinking. Good luck and please drop your experiences.

2024.05.17 22:06 astrom4n Landlord wants to fumigate, I don’t want my belongings exposed

I am a renter, our house has termites, the house has been fumigated in the past. They are definitely a problem where we live (San Jose, Ca). I’ve seen a few houses on my block with the tent.
Call me paranoid but I do not want my belongings fumigated (beds, furniture, clothing, shelf food, etc). Nor do I love the idea of living in a house 3 days after it was just smoked out like it’s alllllll good.
Am I legally obligated to let them do it? Or can I push back and refuse? They are offering per diem but it’s not about compensation.
I realize some of this might be dependent upon my lease agreement and if anyone is really curious to help I could share it.
Thanks for any help here.

2024.05.16 07:32 ontheballoot Mandatory Testing for Ethylene Oxide Residue in Spice Shipments to Singapore and Hong Kong

Mandatory Testing for Ethylene Oxide Residue in Spice Shipments to Singapore and Hong Kong
India has implemented new regulations requiring the testing and sampling of Ethylene Oxide (EtO) residue for all spice shipments bound for Singapore and Hong Kong, effective May 7. This decision comes in response to reports of India spice products being recalled from these markets due to safety concerns.
India has made the testing and sampling of Ethylene Oxide (EtO) residue for all spice shipments to Singapore and Hong Kong from May 7
The commerce ministry revealed that a techno-scientific committee conducted a comprehensive root cause analysis, inspected processing facilities, and collected samples for testing in accredited labs. To ensure compliance, guidelines for EtO treatment have been reiterated to all exporters.
Spice Board India has taken proactive measures to guarantee the safety and quality of Indian spice exports, organizing stakeholder consultations involving over 130 exporters and associations, such as the All India Spices Exporters Forum and the Indian Spice and Foodstuff Exporters’ Association.
Despite concerns, government officials assure that the rejection rates of spices remain low, with export sample failures being isolated incidents. The commerce ministry disclosed that India’s spice rejection rate is below 1%, emphasizing that the recalled quantity is a fraction of the total exports.
EtO, a fumigant used during transportation, is subject to varying limits set by different countries, including India. While Hong Kong and Singapore recently banned specific Indian spice products over EtO presence, manufacturers like MDH have refuted allegations, asserting the safety of their products.
MDH emphasized that they do not utilize ethylene oxide at any stage of processing their spices, reassuring consumers of their safety standards.
These regulatory measures underscore India’s commitment to upholding food safety standards and ensuring the integrity of its exports, safeguarding consumer health and confidence in Indian spices on the global market.

2024.05.15 08:18 Hot-Chip9353 How do I keep bugs out of my room??

I just moved in with my best friend and his mom abt a month ago, and the last few weeks we’ve gotten so many bugs. There’s been multiple kinds of spiders, roaches and so fucking many pincher bugs. More pincher bugs than I’ve ever seen in my life.
The house isn’t dirty, we don’t leave food or trash out so I don’t understand where they’re coming from or why into the house. There’s no water damage anywhere that I know of.
I have OCD and I hate bugs and germs so finding some in my room has been extremely upsetting and I don’t know how to keep them out while I’m waiting for my friends mom to set up a fumigation. Also I’m not sure how to prepare for that either. I don’t eat in there at all and there’s only so much I can do to declutter since I don’t have a lot of furniture to properly organize my things yet :(
My parents never really taught me how to handle situations like this, and had a tendency to just sort of ignore problems when they would come up. I feel like I’ve been floundering these last couple of years now that I’m technically an adult, especially recently as my mental health has been so poor.
Does anyone have experience with bugs and pests? Is there anything I can do to try and keep them out of my room or am I just gonna have to suck it up until my roommates mom gets around to setting up a fumigation?? Any advice is welcome and appreciated

2024.05.15 07:36 callmefreak My husband's house is going to collapse and his dad is going to die and I feel useless because I can't really do anything about it.

I suppose the title is the TL;DR.
His dad is living in a house that my husband owns ten hours away from us. He's been letting it go to shit, letting the pipes crack and not telling us until he gets a $650 water bill four months later. He's a hoarder, the house is full of bugs and because there's a whole lot of shit in it fumigating it is useless since they just hide in pockets of air. There's mold in it and there's no running water. His dad has COPD. He is refusing to leave the house despite it killing him.
Seven pipes had to be replaced so far and we can't just pay for them all at once! (That's around $500/pipe.) He didn't even fucking tell us that those pipes were replaced and needs to be paid for.
He has lived in the house rent free, and he has ruined the house that my husband owns because he knows that my husband doesn't have a fucking spine to stand up to him.
We've known that he's a hoarder for nearly a decade now and I kept telling my husband "your dad's going to die if we don't do anything about it" and he'll tell me "I know. I'm just stressed out and don't want to think about it."
Well, now he's actually going to die soon if we don't do anything about it, and again he tells me that he's stressed out and don't want to do anything about it. His dad is having frequent black outs. I keep telling my husband to start the process of kicking him out (which doesn't actually require a notice since he's considered as our "guest") but my husband is "too stressed thinking about it."
My husband told me that the place that his grandma lives in right now is going to be vacant because one of her daughters and son-in-laws bought the house next door and will be moving her there with them. They're just trying to fix it up. The one she's currently in has sliding scale rent. That sounds perfect for his dad. He'll be living right next door to his sister, brother-in-law and mother. I keep telling my husband to call his grandma so he can get information on the house and get the landlord's number. He doesn't want to, because "stress."
I've been trying everything that I can fucking do for my husband so he doesn't need to do it. I've been trying to look for another place for his dad that his dad can afford. I've been looking into getting his dad food stamps. Hell, I'll fucking call his grandma, find out where she lives and get the fucking landlord's number myself.
I've been getting input from my grandmother, who's a landlord. She's been a huge help. She told us that since his dad keeps ruining the house and we're going to be pouring all of this money into it, that we should start charging him rent until a house is available for him. She'll help us out with that. The lease wouldn't be given to him until after there's running water again, of course. I just wanted to stop paying for the damn pipes until she can give us further input in person.
I tell this to my husband and he fucking tells me "look, I know that you're trying to help, but I really don't want to think about this right now. It's stressing me out and I'll end up in the hospital again." (He was in the hospital recently. We're not sure why. He denied that it was stress until it was convenient for him.)
He's been "not thinking about this right now" for eight fucking years now. There's no more fucking time to wait! The house is going to collapse and his dad is going to die if he keeps waiting. I dunno which one will come first, but both are inevitable if he doesn't fucking do something. What will happen then? Will he put off his father's funeral because the thought stresses him out so much? Will he let his house just sit as a pile of rubble forever when it happens?
He's only gotten as far as telling his dad that he can't stay in that house without running water, and then letting himself forget that he said that after his dad successfully changed the topic on him by talking about a TV show my husband doesn't even watch.
I don't know what the fuck I can fucking do. We weren't married when he bought the house so my name isn't on the contract, so I can't legally kick his dad out for him. I've been trying my best doing what I can do for him because I know that he won't do it.
If the house collapses it'll be a huge sunken cost fallacy for us, but whatever. I'll be pissed off and at that point I will refuse to help his dad find a place because my husband wouldn't work with me when I tried. His dad will be homeless but it won't be the end of the world for us. But if his dad dies because my husband refused to do anything for him then that will emotionally damage him forever, and the rest of the family will blame him for not doing anything about it sooner, and rightfully so.
Update: There are a few things that happened within the few days after I posted this rant.
There is running water in the house now! My husband's uncle fixed all of the pipes (around $4,000 worth) for less than $2,000. He's awesome! I still want his dad out of the house since he's still a hoarder, the place is full of bugs and his dad collapses regularly.
Because my husband's uncle did the pipes, he got to see just how bad his brother-in-law's hoarding has gotten and understands why we're trying to move him out now, so he and his wife are going to try to help clean up the house with him. That's fucking awesome of them. They're fucking awesome. I can't praise them enough.
My husband finally called his grandma. For some god damn reason her landlord wants to tear that place down and build a new one as soon as she's gone. We can try to see if they'll let my father-in-law stay in that place as-is before she moves but I doubt that will happen. (It's still worth a try.)
Right now there are two different plans.
  1. Get him on a lease. If he's going to keep wrecking the place then we're going to start charging him rent for it. My grandma's a landlord (our landlord) so we've been talking to her about this quite a bit. She'll help me write a month-to-month lease for him. (She was on vacation when I made this rant. I didn't have her to vent to.)
Or 2. Try to get him into a different place that he can afford until a retirement home is available for him around where we live. (Which could take a year or two.) I can't apply for him without some of his information, and he'll refuse to do so himself. So we'll have to go down there. Thankfully we now have more than a week to do so thanks to my husband switching jobs.
Originally I wanted to get him into a different place to wreck (lol) until a retirement home will be available, but if we can make progress on that house (specifically the hoarding problem) and we can get somebody to check in on him frequently then I'd feel a lot better about him staying there until a retirement apartment is available.
We should like... Give my husband's aunt and uncle a fucking cake or something. (Maybe we can pay them a small amount to check up on my father-in-law once a week. It'd be cheaper than a nurse and they'd actually care a lot more thank a nurse.)

2024.05.11 13:19 Aphand_1999 The Ending?

So the last year, I've been fighting off the sighting of German roaches in my apartment. I told my super day one that I've been seeing them, I was the first one to report anything, and continually reported anything I saw to them. I finally got a fumigation when I saw an broken oothecae on my kitchen counter, they brought someone to inspect my unit to see where they were coming from and the professional said they were modt likely coming from my downstairs neighbor due to our pipes being connected. My super told me he would update me on the entire situation since the people below me were getting evicted anyways, this was last month.
Fast forward to yesterday, they had someone come into every unit and I spoke to my super. Apparently the neighbors below me had hundreds alive and dead on the floors and walls alone, my super told me in the last 40 years of him running the building they never had a roach problem especially of this size. He once again told me to keep him updated if I ever see anything again.
Now that it's all over, will I never see them again? It's caused so much pain and anxiety to my partner and I and I've lost my toaster and microwave due to these terrible neighbors who didn't care how they were affecting our community. So I just want to never see them again at this point. I'm going to keep going what I do (throwing our garbage before going to bed/putting pet food away/containers) but I just want to know if this will be the last time I ever see them because they found the main source.

2024.05.10 07:37 ComatoseOtaku420 Urologist appointment got cancelled

Just need a little vent. R was really depressed when I found out that my appointment got cancelled for Monday the 13th. It's kind of my own fault. I had a lot of stuff going on. my apartment needed to be fumigated twice for bed bugs. All my stuff needed to be packed up in boxes and I was just not going through a really good mental state throughout those few weeks.
I remember calling the urologist just to double-check if there was anything I needed to do before the appointment last week and they had told me I needed to go to a blood lab to send in a urine test. However I had only remembered to do that today which was unfortunate.
Only a few hours later I got a phone call that I missed because I hadn't been sleeping very well and I feel sick I believe to my new medication that my doctor had given me for nerve pain(pregabalin) 200mg a day. Was originally on 25, 50 ,75,150 and now I'm on 200mg. However, I noticed for the past 3 days I've been extremely nauseous and I have not been able to keep food down. I feel really sick, dizzy.
I have headaches. I haven't been able to get a hold of my doctor to let him know and I just assumed that my body would get used to the medication. But I'm really just venting because I'm really depressed on learning that my appointment has been cancelled. I did call and leave a message hoping that they will call me back tomorrow so that I can reschedule. I did tell them that I did send in the urine test today and that it was in the morning and that there was just a lot of stuff going on at my apartment and that I had completely forgotten about it due to stress.

2024.05.09 12:47 Universalpestcontrol Termite Damage

Termite Damage
Termite Damage in Hampton Roads
Termite Damage Under a Home
Termite damage can be a significant problem for homeowners, as termites are known for their ability to consume wood and other cellulose-based materials within a structure, often causing extensive and costly damage before they are even detected. Here’s an overview of termite damage, including signs, prevention, and treatment:

Signs of Termite Damage

  1. Visible Tunnels: Termites create narrow tubes made of mud on walls, wooden beams, or in crawl spaces as they travel between their colony and food sources.
  2. Hollowed Wood: Wood that sounds hollow when tapped can be a sign of termite feeding. The surface might look intact, but the inside can be extensively eaten away.
  3. Swarms: Seeing swarms of winged termites or discarded wings near windowsills and doors are signs of termites looking to establish new colonies.
  4. Frass: This is termite droppings that often resemble small piles of sawdust. Finding frass can indicate active feeding.
  5. Sagging Floors and Ceilings: As termites compromise the structural integrity of timber, this can lead to visible sagging in flooring and ceilings.
  6. Doors and Windows Sticking: Uneven or damaged wood can cause frames to warp, making doors and windows difficult to open.
Termite Inspection

Types of Termites

  • Subterranean Termites: The most common type, they build their colonies underground and create mud tubes to access food sources above ground. They are primarily found in moist climates.
  • Drywood Termites: These termites infest dry wood, such as that found in attic framings and can be more difficult to detect as they do not require contact with the soil.
  • Dampwood Termites: Typically found in wood with high moisture content, these termites do not usually affect residential structures unless there are existing moisture problems.

Prevention and Control

  1. Moisture Control: Fix leaks, properly ventilate damp areas, and maintain drainage systems to keep wood dry and less attractive to termites.
  2. Regular Inspections: Having a professional inspect your home annually for signs of termite activity can help catch infestations early.
  3. Physical Barriers: During construction, use physical barriers like metal or crushed rock that termites cannot penetrate.
  4. Chemical Treatments: Termiticides can be applied around and beneath a building’s foundation to protect against termite entry.
  5. Bait Stations: Placed around the perimeter of a home, these can attract and poison termites before they reach the structure.

Treatment

If termite damage is detected, it’s important to contact a professional pest control expert. Treatment options may include:
  • Liquid Pesticides: Injected into the ground around and beneath the home.
  • Fumigation: Entire homes may need to be tented and fumigated, particularly in the case of severe drywood termite infestations.
  • Spot Treatments: Direct application of termiticides to areas where termites are present.
The extent of damage and the type of termite will dictate the appropriate response strategy. Repairs to the damaged wood may also involve partial replacement or the addition of structural supports depending on the severity of the damage.
Termite Inspection
Given the stealthy nature of termites and their potential for significant structural damage, proactive prevention measures and regular inspections are key to protecting your property from these destructive pests.
