2010.08.14 21:53 tardotronic e17 The window manager is a lean, fast, modular and very extensible window manager for X11 and Linux

[Enlightenment](http://www.enlightenment.org/) is not just a window manager for Linux/X11 and others, but also a whole suite of libraries to help you create beautiful user interfaces with much less work than doing it the old fashioned way and fighting with traditional tool kits, not to mention a traditional window manager. It covers uses from small mobile devices like phones all the way to powerful multi-core desktops (which are the primary development environment).

2024.06.01 13:58 ChrizzyDT CachyOS Handheld Edition

Hey all.
I'm just dropping my two cents after trying multiple Linux distros on my ROG Ally.
One of the latest distros I've been using is Bazzite. I love it, but it also drives me up the wall. Issues with VRR not working, frame limit not working, updates locking up the device on reboot, plasma shell crashing for over 2 weeks, etc etc. I love the whole idea of a fedora immutable desktop, with the Steam Deck UI and handheld optimizations on top. I hope it improves and I'm sure it will, but the non stop issues and hoping the next update doesn't cause me more headaches was enough.
Before that I tried ChimeraOS. While it was good and actually worked reliably, it's a little out of date using the 6.6.10 kernel, and a slightly older mesa 23. I dislike GNOME personally, so didn't think too much about the desktop, but the joysticks and buttons on the ROG never worked anyway. So I moved to Bazzite. I also noticed the performance was definitely not as good as Bazzite, probably due to the older kernel and drivers.
Anyway, I downloaded the latest CachyOS ISO they are making for handhelds and it's pretty damn good. It's all the latest stuff, being based on arch. kernel 6.9.3, Mesa 24.1, all the big CPU scheduler and performance optimizations they have done, and it's a nice clean KDE 6.0.5 desktop with the Steam Deck theme. Handheld mode works perfectly. FPS limit works, VRR works, just install Decky Loader and SimpleDeckyTDP as you would on ChimeraOS, and everything is done. I think they are going to release the final build soon, but the latest iso is pretty fricking sweet if you want the latest and greatest, performance tweaked Linux handheld OS that works reliably and is based on Arch.
I think once it's released and people give it a go, it's going to do well.

2024.06.01 11:23 P7755 How can I make dark mode work on i3 on Fedora?

I have a installation of Fedora 40 with Gnome and I've installed i3 and started configuring it. In Gnome when I switch to dark mode my apps like the Chrome browser pick up this change but not in i3.
How can I make this work in i3?
These are my aliases to set the theme: alias dark="gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme Adwaita-dark && gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface color-scheme prefer-dark"
alias light="gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme Adwaita && gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface color-scheme prefer-light"
Here's what I have observed:
  1. If I log in to i3 directly and change the theme, it won't be applied
  2. If I log in to Gnome first and then log out and log in to i3 it works
I'm assuming that there's a service running that's started by Gnome to track these settings, I want to start this service from my i3 config to be able to switch the theme easily.
I checked the systemd services using `systemctl --user list-units` and found out that there are 5 services less when logging in to i3 directly and one of them is `dconf.service` which I tried to start but didn't change anything.

2024.06.01 10:40 SubstanceFew5136 Frequent firefox crashes

Have been experiencing frequent crashes in Firefox for a while. I liked the default epiphany browser design, so I was using gnome web theme on firefox. Since there has been the issues I assumed it might be my tweaking. Used Vivaldi for a while. I came back to using elementary again and tried firefox and floorp browser, tested both Deb and flatpak versions. Having similar crashes now and then. Promting me to quit or restart firefox. Is it just me or anyone else facing this? Elementary specific issue or from firefox? The crashes are often while using YouTube (with and without ad blocker). Is it something to do with new YouTube ad blocking issues?

2024.06.01 00:53 IAmOpenSource Moving to the good side

Moving to the good side
Hi! I recently switched to Fedora 40. Best decision ever! I previously used LMDE, before that Ubuntu. Finally a good distro!
My GNOME Extensions:
Add to Desktop (it doesn't support GNOME 46 yet, but works fine for me.)
AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support
Dash to Dock
Desktop Icons NG (DING)
User Themes
My other customisations:
I like a minimalist look, but don't have a mouse, so used GNOME Tweaks to add a minimise button, you can also add maximise button this way
Added custom shortcut which runs gnome-terminal on ctrl+alt+t, like in Ubuntu.
Changed close window shortcut to be ctrl+q.
Overall I am really happy with Fedora, and will probably never hop again.

2024.05.31 23:31 No-Still-2755 Planning on switching to Linux for good, only concern is gaming, any advice?

So I find myself, after using Windows for decades, in a position where I cant use the latest version of the OS because of my old hardware, unless I force it, and even if I could the future of Windows isnt bright at all with all that AI intrusive crap that they will be forcing upon their users.
Im not a total beginner in Linux, I always liked tweaking and trying stuff, I even managed to install a working Arch Linux copy with KDE Plasma (obviously following the Arch Wiki and lots of YouTube videos and spending hours fixing issues lmao), never really made it into other Desktop Environments such as i3, dwm, etc I already suffered a lot trying to make the goddamn lockscreen and KDE work. But that installation died after some update and couldn't really make it work again, I also never really felt like taking big advantage of the Rolling Release model and the AUR, so while I like learning and experiencing, for a daily driver OS Im not looking for such complexity and issues.
That being said, Im looking for a distro that looks nice, Im tired of that outdated design that many distros such as Linux Mint have, so Im really inclined towards Gnome Desktop Environtment (in fact the distros I enjoyed the most are based in that DE, such as Pop! OS, Ubuntu, ElementaryOS). Ability to customize is always appreciated, not just the basic dark theme, fonts and accent colors, I have some familiarity with Gnome Extensions which are really cool, in fact Im pretty sure I will end up using some gnome based distro (unless you guys know a better alternative that fits me), I just dont know which one.
Im also looking for a distro that doesnt have any kind of big company behind tracking my data or whatever sketchy stuff, just a simple system, without bloatware (just the basic useful apps).
As I previously said, Im not a total beginner so I can kinda find my ways around issues or setting up stuff thats not set out of the box, but Im definately not looking for an Arch experience, I dont want my system to blow up for no reason and then having to either use backups or spend hours finding a fix, I want something stable, but not a total boring, limited distro, but also not something too advanced.
Im also doubting between which package manager would be better, either APT, AUR (probably not for me hehe), Flatpak, etc) Im looking for something that provides big library (especially for making games and my gaming hardware such as xbox one controller and g920 logitech wheel compatible compatible) while not being too resource heavy or being overly complicated with lots of different versions for just one app and unstable releases. I want something that works, once again probably Rolling Release isnt my thing.
In regards to gaming, I had some experience with Steam's Proton and Lutris and I must say im impressed with how good games worked, pretty much as good as on Windows. Im aware tho that most competitive shooters are uncompatible especially due to anticheat software, however Im not into online shooters anymore, here's what I'd like to play:
Lastly I would like to know how would my Logitech G920 + Shifter work on Linux and my Xbox One Controller (wired, not planning to use it wireless) work.
And here are my PC specs in case you wonder:
Thanks in advice and have a nice day!

Gnome customisation
Heya! So im currently using Fedora Workstation with the latest updates and everything. I wanted some help with the gnome extensions and tweaks app.
So i have a few themes and icons that ive downloaded and moved to the .themes and .icons folder respectively but they fail to show up in the User Themes extension for some reason. Is there any reason why this should be happening? Some help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance :)

One World, One Blood Bowl #46 Return to BB part 1: FUMBBL
Due to work and Real Life issue, One World, One Blood Bowl had to pause.
But over the next few months, things look more Blood Bowly down my endz and its time to for me to gently dip my toe back into Blood Bowl. Is it worth returning to? What's hot and what's not? So loosely theming each show around FUMBBL, Blood Bowl 3 and Table Top (ironically utterly against the entire concept of OWOBB) over the next three weeks i plan to have a good old route around Blood Bowl and Say...
'Wassup to ma Bowldem, is BB peng, basic or fire? no cap'
Oh yes, OWOBB is going to be all modern and stuff. With an exciting new logo, and... er... that's it really, it's still going to be some old bearded bloke chatting with three others about Blood Bowl. I mean, that seemed to work, so it'll be like that. But better, and 2024.
So, this Sunday, 2nd June 2024, at 9pm BST (which i think is 20:00 UTC, but don't trust me, check, 'cos i get that stuff wrong) live on: https://www.twitch.tv/purplechest
Your panel, introduced by way of searingly current cultural reference:
PurpleChest: Jon Snow: He Knows Nothing, and had a saucy Aunt who is now dead.
Bazakastine: Sansa Stark: Long hair and ended up in charge of stuff somehow.
neilwat: Hodor: Pure of heart, gets stuff done.
Elyod: Hot Pie
So this one is going to be very chatty, centering on FUMBBL and no doubt covering Gnomes, the latest errata/FAQ/Changes and other topical musings.

While the Maxwell will feature an installation opening on May 4, 2024, of Begay's photography documenting his perspectives of these cultural themes within the landscape, the traveling portion of ALL REZ will begin June 6, 2024, and take Begay's photographs back to his home community in the Axle Contemporary mobile artspace. The interior of the truck will be transformed into a welcoming space for reflection and conversation with the artist about his photographs and the cultural content held therein. As an exercise in creative place-making with the goal of fostering active storytelling, ALL REZ centers the voices and experiences of Dine community members, offering a reciprocal process of exhibition-making. At the ALL REZ: Kickoff Celebration, enjoy a unique public event in which we will have the actual Axle Contemporary Truck at the museum before it goes on its journey into and throughout Diné Bikéyah (Navajo Nation). Light fare, refreshments, and music in the museum courtyard! Rapheal Begay is a visual storyteller based in the Navajo Nation. Informed by cultural teachings and land-based knowledge, he activates landscape photography and oral storytelling traditions to document and celebrate the Diné way of life. Housed in a custom retrofitted 1970 aluminum delivery truck, Axle Contemporary is an art gallery on wheels that activates unusual venues, such as schools, restaurants, grocery stores, and city streets, thus, expanding artists' reach to diverse communities. His passion for music was born at age four; creating drum sets in his kitchen with pots and pans and kitchen utensils. A few years later he picked up the electric guitar followed by the piano, teaching himself how to write and compose music before taking lessons. After playing in bands for some time he decided he wanted to have full control over the music he was creating and found his way into producing electronic music. Beloved by both the underground and the mainstream, his ability to bridge lightness and darkness is evident throughout his discography and cements sumthin sumthin as a one-of-a-kind artist. 2024.05.30 04:55 Hlorpy-Flatworm-1705 The Oracle's Name Book

Naome the Oracle has had clients all over and she usually is very organized. However, due to the ending of a long war, she is inundated with requests for baby names. Because of how many name requests are coming in, Naome has inquired your help for the following clients' baby name suggestions.
  1. Vampire divorces have been on the rise following the change in the family structure. For Emeralda Van Hueban, this meant she could leave her abusive and sexist husband, Dashiell Carraway, and every trace of being with him behind. This includes changing the names of their three kids. Dashiell insisted on having a junior, naming their oldest son Dashiell Kieran Carraway Jr., and giving his daughters the names of his parents who never supported their marriage, Josephine Leigh Carraway and Katherine Ramona Carraway. Emeralda and her children love to read so she woul love to give them names based on their favourite book genres - DJ liking romance and sentimental novels, Josie liking adventure novels, and Katie being interested in political satires. DJ also requests to keep his initials so he can maintain his nickname, though he understands if he cannot.
  2. Primrose the Pixie and her boyfriend, Cyre the Gnome, thought they were being careful... until the frog test confirmed that she and the frog were soon to be mothers! Of the many things she has to worry about, namely how much gnomes and pixies typically hate each other, she doesnt want her baby's name to be one of them. Since its so early in her pregnancy, she wants options for both a male and female baby. However, she does know she wants to have natural names that pay homage to Cyre's Germanic heritage to get a few brownie points from Cyre's family when they receive the news.
  3. Sirian the Wise has taken on his young nephew as his apprentice. Unfortunately, his sister, who renounced any connection she had to witchcraft, named his nephew Paul Gregory Yates, the least magical name there is. Sirian has inquired upon Naome to help him and Paul find a better, more mystical name for the budding warlock.
  4. Helikos Simou and his harem are expecting three litters of new werewolf pups! Two of the three mothers have opted to name their own children, but first time mom, Cressida, is clueless. A trusted vet friend has confirmed 6 pups but, due to scientific pitfalls, cannot determine sexes. Therefore, Helikos has asked for not one, not two, but a dozen names for his future pups, six for each gender, that they can pick from when the time comes. A harem tradition is for the pups to have the same first letter [or two if its a common letter] as their mother for identification purposes. Luckily, Cressida isnt too hung up about her pups having middle names as well.
  5. Is it dangerous to have a dragon as a familiar? Yes. Does Hemma of Brasov care? Not at all. Upon spotting the three large eggs, she knew that taking them would be signing up for a big responsibility. But letting them just succumb to the elements was never an option. She now has three new dragon familiars to go along with her cats, Bonny and Klyde. One dragon, the only girl, is a calm, shimmering blue dragon who is curious and cautious. One dragon is a darker, more mesmerizing blue who is the biggest of the litter, a troublemaker who enjoys climbing the fridge to get to the cookies and hoarding Hemma's socks under her sofa. The last dragon is a sky blue doughball who enjoys naps with his cat siblings and investigating the best sleep spots in the cottage. All three need fitting names. Hemma would like a magical theme and loves Latin words despite her very thick Romani accent, but is flexible with the names. The only dragon whose name shes ever shouting is the troublemaker, so shed like to not struggle to pronounce it.

2024.05.29 19:19 thomas_m_k Automatic dark mode following system theme (on Linux and MacOS)

I wanted my neovim to be in dark mode when my OS is in dark mode, so I wrote this function:
-- Set color theme to light/dark based on current system preferences. function set_background_based_on_os() -- Default value local background = 'light' -- First check whether we are on MacOS if vim.loop.os_uname().sysname == "Darwin" then -- Check if 'defaults' is executable if vim.fn.executable('defaults') ~= 0 then -- Execute command to check if the macOS appearance is set to Dark local appleInterfaceStyle = vim.fn.system({"defaults", "read", "-g", "AppleInterfaceStyle"}) if appleInterfaceStyle:find("Dark") then background = 'dark' end end -- Check if 'busctl' is executable (part of systemd) elseif vim.fn.executable('busctl') ~= 0 then -- Get the current color scheme from xdg-desktop-portal using busctl local result = vim.fn.system({ "busctl", "--user", "call", "org.freedesktop.portal.Desktop", "/org/freedesktop/portal/desktop", "org.freedesktop.portal.Settings", "ReadOne", "ss", "org.freedesktop.appearance", "color-scheme" }) -- The result is in the form of "v u 0" for light and "v u 1" for dark local color_scheme = result:match("u%s+(%d+)") if color_scheme == '1' then background = 'dark' end else end -- Set the background opt.background = background end
On MacOS, it uses the defaults command to find out the system theme. For Linux, it uses the very complicated command
busctl --user call org.freedesktop.portal.Desktop /org/freedesktop/portal/desktop org.freedesktop.portal.Settings ReadOne ss "org.freedesktop.appearance" "color-scheme"
which does work on GNOME, and I think it should also work on KDE, but I haven't tested it.
One shortcoming of this solution is that the system theme is only checked at start-up. So, if you toggle the system theme while neovim is already running, it won't change. But this is fine for me.

2024.05.29 18:13 Yul30 "Dynamic" hover color for the elements of the top panel

Hi.
In my system the top panel is transparent and turns gray when a window is maximized thanks to "dynamic panel transparency" extension. With the default Gnome theme, when the cursor hovers on the top panel's elements these turns light-blue without maximized window (image 1) and turns in light-gray with a maximized window. With Colloid-theme, instead, them turns in light-gray (image 2) with or without maximized windows. How can I achive the same result with the custom theme? Can I achive it changing the relative .css file?
Thanks, I need your help!

Graphical artifact left over after playing game
I have an issue that is driving me crazy. I am using Fedora 40, just recently upgraded from Fedora 38. I recently played a game on Steam (V Rising), and it seems an artifact was left over near the title bar to a few applications. Slack, Chrome, and Brave are all showing this artifact "normal", which was the game difficulty that showed at the top right of the screen while playing. I haven't seen it yet with any other programs. This annoyance has persisted through reboots. Also, I don't believe that this is related to the upgrade to Fedora40, since it was happening with 38 as well. I'm assuming it's an issue with Gnome, but I can't get it to go away. I'm using an Nvidia 3080 with the most recent nvidia drivers from rpmfusion (550.78). I've tried changing themes and restarting gnome, with no change. Anybody have any ideas before I nuke it all and fresh install?

On certain days, I experience a prolonged boot time. Usually, it takes 7 to 8 seconds, but it takes 1 minute and 30 seconds now. Why is that and how can it be resolved?

2024.05.29 11:52 Yul30 Docfetcher: Snap vs portable version. Help for avoiding Snap!

Hi, debian-guy :)
I'm sorry for my stupid question but I'm a noob. I have the necessity of a full-text file indexer and Docfetcher has been shown the best for my need. Now I have two possibilities: 1) install it as a snap or 2) use it as a portable version. I would like to avoid the first option: I have just finished the migration from Ubuntu. The portable version comes as "DocFetcher-GTK3.sh". Now my questions are:
  1. Is it possible to create the relative .desktop file? So I'll avoid to start it from the terminal, opened in its relative folder, with the command "./DocFetcher-GTK3.sh"
  2. Is it possible to "tell" it to ignore the dark-theme and use the light one? In addition, is it possibile to correct the window buttons to have theme circular and don't elliptical? The portable version is better integrated with Gnome in contrast of snap version, except for this last element.
I need your help,
thanks in advance :)
