2024.06.05 03:22 Wild_Extra_Dip The Obligation to Stick to the Sunnah and Serious Warnings Against Innovation

الحمد لله و الصلاة و السلام على رسول الله صلى الله عليه و آله و أصحابه و سلم
Previously we have written on why it is an obligation to follow the sunnah
And now we will clarify which team is the actual team that follows the sunnah, which person is actually the follower of the sunnah, and to whom they attribute themselves and what their origin is.
They have various names:
- Ahl al/ashabul hadeeth (people of hadeeth)
- Ahl al athar (people of narration)
- Ahl as-sunnah (people of the sunnah)
- Atbaa’ as-salaf (followers of the salaf)

And the reason they are named as such is because they are followers of the hadeeth, plain and simple, without leaning to anyone’s opinion that goes against the objective meanings of the Quraan and the sunnah, as all the innovator teams have become misguided because they have rejected the correct meanings of the Quraan and the sunnah, and have deviated to an opinion they preferred.
And they do not only follow the hadeeth, they follow the ones that have conveyed the hadeeth to them who are the “salaf” and the salaf are defined as mentioned in the hadeeth of Allaah’s messenger peace and blessings upon him:
“The best people are those of my generation, and then those who will come after them (the next generation), and then those who will come after them (i.e. the next generation), and then after them, there will come people whose witness will precede their oaths, and whose oaths will precede their witness." [Bukhari and Muslim]
A generation is one hundred years, among other definitions, it also refers to the companions.
And a companion is anyone who has seen and has believed in the messenger of Allaah peace and blessings upon him.
They are the most knowledgeable of all Muslims as they have learnt directly from the messenger of Allaah peace and blessings upon him, and were exalted by Allaah in the Quraan in over 100 ayat.
And after the companions, come the tabi’een which literally means: followers
As a term, it means the scholars that have seen the companions but have not seen the messenger of Allaah peace and blessings upon him, and in them the messenger of Allaah peace and blessings upon him said:
The Fire shall not touch the Muslim who saw me, or saw one who saw me." [https://sunnah.com/tirmidhi:3858\]
And he also said:
“Tooba (glad tidings) for whoever has seen me, or whoever has seen those who have seen me” [narrated by Ibn Abi Assim and others, authentic]

And because of the glad tidings given to those people, they aren’t good just because they have seen Allaah’s messenger peace and blessings upon him but also because of the knowledge they have gotten, and those tabi’een aren’t good for seeing the companions only but for the knowledge they have accumulated, they are better than us in the sight of Allaah and as such, we must follow them obediently, as the knowledge they had was sufficient to make them the best, and it should definitely be sufficient for us who are much lower and much less informed than they were.

What has been narrated from the companions may Allaah be pleased with them in sticking to the sunnah:

Al Irbaadh ibn Saariya may Allaah be pleased with him said:
One day the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led us in prayer, then faced us and gave us a lengthy exhortation at which the eyes shed tears and the hearts were afraid.
A man said: Messenger of Allah! It seems as if it were a farewell exhortation, so what injunction do you give us?
He then said: I enjoin you to fear Allaah, and to hear and obey even if it be an Abyssinian slave, for those of you who live after me will see great disagreement. You must then follow my sunnah and that of the rightly-guided caliphs. Hold to it and stick fast to it. Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error.” [Abu Dawood and others, authentic]
And the four rightly guided caliphs are the best most knowledgeable of the companions that have been given leadership, they are Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali may Allaah be pleased with them.

It was narrated that Jabir bin 'Abdullah may Allaah be pleased with them said:
"When the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) delivered a sermon, his eyes would turn red, he would raise his voice and he would speak with intensity, as if he were warning of an (enemy) army, saying, 'They will surely attack you in the morning, or they will surely attack you in the evening!' He would say: 'I and the Hour have been sent like these two' and he would hold his index and middle finger. Then he would say: 'The best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The most evil matters are those that are newly-invented, and every innovation (Bid'ah) is a going astray.'
Abdullaah ibn Ukaym (tabi’i) was sent to attend the court of Al Hajjaj, when he entered, he was asked “How did Umar used to preach?”
Abdullaah said: Umar used to say: “The most truthful saying is the saying of Allaah, and indeed, the best way is the way of Muhammad peace and blessings upon him, and the most evil matters of religion are the newly introduced, and every innovation is misguidance, and indeed, people are in wellness so long as they take their religion from their elders, and the young ones haven’t rebelled over the elders, and when the young ones rebel against the elders, then they have been doomed” [Lalikaa'i]

Abdullah ibn Masoud may Allaah be pleased with him said:
We were with the Prophet (ﷺ), and he drew a line (in the sand), then he drew two lines to its right and two to its left. Then he put his hand on the middle line and said : 'This is the path of Allaah. Then he recited the Verse: And verily, this (i.e. Allah's Commandments) is My straight path, so follow it and follow not (other) paths, for they will separate you from His path..." (Al Anaam 153 translation of the meaning) [Hadeeth is narrated from several authorities, authentic]

Abdullaah ibn Al Abbas may Allaah be pleased with them was on the pulpit when he said: The messenger of Allaah peace and blessings upon him said: ‘The affairs of this nation are good and (they are) close (to each other) so long as they have not discussed children and qadar meaning: the fate of the children of the disbelievers and have not argued in qadar” [Al Haakim and Ibn Hibban, authentic]
And as it has appeared, one of the earliest misguidances was the misguidance of the qadariyya which also originated due to the Muslims quarreling about the fates (qadar) of the disbelievers and the believers, and where the children of the disbelievers will end up when they die, but without any proper knowledge of the sunnah, and if they had turned to the sunnah they would’ve been cured, but they were ignorant, and they persisted in their misguidance until they denied qadar altogether”

Abu Bakr may Allaah be pleased with him used to say: “Which earth will carry me and which sky will shadow me if I speak in the words of Allaah without knowledge?”
And coming from Abu Bakr who was the most knowledgeable of all companions, this is a grave warning.

Umar may Allaah be pleased with him used to say: “Avoid the people of opinion, they are the enemies of the sunnah, the hadeeths were too difficult for them to memorize so they spoke with opinion and they were misguided for it”

Muaath ibn Jabal may Allaah be pleased with him whenever he sat down to teach or preach or give a speech would say:
Allah is a just arbiter; those who doubt would perish. One day Mu’adh b. jabal said: In the times after you there would be trails in which riches would be abundant. During these trails the Quran would be easy so much so that every believer, hypocrite, man, woman, young, grown up, slave and free man will learn it. Then a man might say: What happened with the people that they do not follow me while I read the Quran? They are not going to follow me until I introduce a novelty for them other than it. So avoid that which is innovated (in religion), for whichever is innovated is an error. I warn you of the deviation of a scholar from right guidance, for sometimes Satan utters a word of error through the tongue of a scholar; and sometimes a hypocrites may speak a word of truth. I said to Mu’adh b. jabal: I am at a loss to understand may Allah have mercy on you that a learned man sometimes may speak a word of error and a hypocrite may speak a word of truth. He replied: Yes, avoid the speech of a learned man on distract you from him (the learned), for it is possible that he may withdraw (from these well-known things), and you get the truth when you hear it, for truth has light. {https://sunnah.com/abudawud:4611}

Abdullaah ibn Masoud may Allaah be pleased with him said: “Follow, and do not innovate, you have been sufficed” [At-Tabarani 9/154]

And said: “The little knowledge of the sunnah is better than vast knowledge while being on an innovation” [Ad-Darimi 217]

Abdullaah ibn Umar may Allaah be pleased with him said: “Every innovation is a misguidance, even of people think it to be good” [Lalikaa’i]

Narrations of the tabi’een against innovations

Al Hasan al Basri said: “Know the virtue of the muhajireen (companions that migrated to Medina) and follow their traces and never approach what people have innovated into the religion, because the worst matters of religion are innovations”

Abu Idrees al Kholani said: “To see fire in the masjid that I cannot put out is more preferable to me than seeing an innovation I cannot change” [Thamm al Kalam, As-Sunnah by al Maroozi]
Abu al Aaliya said: “Learn Islam, and when you’ve learnt it do not leave it behind, and stick to the straight path as that is Islam, and do not deviate the path right or left, and stick to the sunnah of your prophet and what his companions had been upon before they killed their companion (Uthman) and before they did what they have done. We have recited the Quraan before they killed their companion, and before they did what they have done by fifteen years, and never approach these desires that create hatred and reproachment among people”

What Abul Aaliya meant is that the companions may Allaah be pleased with them had always been in unity and consensus before they were tried by the hypocrites that were not from among them that instigated them against their imam Uthman may Allaah be pleased with him and before they fought, and those very companions returned to the same unity and consensus later on, especially in year 40AH called “The year of the congregation” ‘عام الجماعة’ when Al Hasan ibn Ali may Allaah be pleased with them stood down from the throne for Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan may Allaah be pleased with them, so stick to the congregation, the consensus and the Quraan, and you’ll reach Jannah safely, quickly and easily.

Abu Qualaba al Jarmi said: “The people of Islam have not introduced an innovation, unless they pick the sword up to fight for it”

And this has happened, and we will mention the history of the innovator teams and how they have caused wars and how they still cause a lot of violence and killing in our modern day, writing this in the 28th of Thul Qida 1445AH

Umar ibn Abdul-Azeez said: “The messenger of Allaah peace and blessings upon him set a path, and so have the leaders after him, we took by the path because we believed in the book of Allaah, the most glorious most exalted, and as completion of the obedience to Allaah the most exalted, and to strengthen ourselves towards the religion of Allaah the most exalted, and whoever works by them is guided, and whoever takes aid from them is aided, and whoever disobeys it has followed other than the believers’ path, and Allaah will make him accountable for what he has relied upon, and given him Jahannam, the worst of fates [An-Nisaa 115]

Al Hasan al Basri said: “Know the virtues of the muhajireen (migrants to Medina of the companions) and follow their actions, and never approach what people have introduced into this religion, for the most evil matters of religion are innovations”

Muhammad ibn Sereen and, another person, Ayyub as-Sikhtiyani was once entered upon by an innovator that wanted to tell him something, and he rejected, and they wanted to recite an aya upon them, and he rejected, they said “Not even a word?” “Not even a word, unless I leave”

And this suffices of the narrations of the tabi’een against innovations, each one of these great imams of Islam that are unknown today will have biographies written for them so the Muslims know who the actual scholars are and who the actual imams are, and in a later post, their students will be mentioned.

2024.06.05 03:20 v01dx Canonically, is Common the universal language?

Is common considered the lingua Franca of Azeroth?
I always assumed this was the case like when we see a horse and alliance character but when I decided to look this up on the new Warcraft wiki, only the RPG and speculation section says it might be considered the global language but there’s no canon references for this.
Is common the universal language like Westron in Lord of the Rings or English IRL?
For example my first language is Spanish but if I want to talk to someone from Vietnam we would use English as a bridge language…
If a Troll wants to talk to a Draenei what language would they use. I know Orcish is like the common tongue of the horde but what about a more global, inter-faction scenario?
Thank you for taking the time to read my post ☺️

2024.06.05 03:19 perseusmagnus Little Death

Tell me how to swim
in your constellations
as I fear I won’t last
in this baptism
of fire. A second too
long is a second too
late. What are bodies,
if not merely stardust?
A supernova leaving
me again. If ceilings talk,
they’d spit me to hell,
or so the elders said.
Tell me how to kneel
and sing the right hymns
of cosmic desire, and
earthly graces.
Nevermind—the saboteurs
of my gravity.
I’d wish upon your
comet in every passage,
its tail blue as your old
Levi’s. Still, I wail with
half-muffled prayers,
as rivulets ran in my face.
Tell me how to repent
every little death to come. I
talk to Cathedral windows
with every syllable melting into
the proper chords of contrition.
Absolve me and dissolve
these thoughts to oblivion,
yet I promise nothing to
anyone. If my halo dims
again, I’m yours to gain
and angels to lose.

I LITERALLY HATE PEOPLE. i drive bmw x3 so apparently somebody decided to crash onto my car idk when but it literally is physically irritating me now that i just noticed it. it’s a small dent but my lord i would literally choke the person to death i would attach the picture here too. See that’s not the point, i parallel park on road when i get home because there’s many car people in my family so since im the youngest i have to park outside because i have to be humble and whatever. What hurts me the most is why would people drive so close even from the sides that it would dent somebody else’s car even on a single way big ass road. Thank god that my side mirrors was closed this time. This happened to me in past as well that somebody drove off so close that their side mirror hit mine i’ll put that picture too. IF YOURE THE PERSON WHO HIT MY CAR, YOU MOTHERFCKER I WISH YOU DROP YOUR PHONE SOMEWHERE AND NEVER FIND AGAIN. I HOPE YOU FAIL OR GET FIRED. I HOPE YOU DROP THE MOST EXPENSIVE THING YOU HAVE IN SOME OCEAN OR SHIT I DONT CARE. 2024.06.05 03:18 TheloverofJesus GOODNEWS! JESUS, THE PERFECT EXAMPLE FOR BELIEVERS (JN. 13:13-17)

Jesus said to His disciples, “You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.”
Washing of feet used to be the duty of a servant amongst the Jews. Jesus became a servant to teach His disciples that serving those under you does not reduce you in status, rather, it wins their hearts, which is God utmost priority.
This can be likened to the miner whose reserves is full of refined gold and other precious stones, yet dig the earth for more. In the process, the miner became a slave to the earth yet the status of the miner is not reduced.
Jesus is the miner. All the riches of this world is nothing compared to the glory in the heavens of heavens where He is enthroned. Yet He became a slave that He might align the hearts of His disciples and all believers to their creator.
Jesus set this perfect example for His disciples. His disciples do the same for the universal Church. You are a part of the Church. As such, you are mandated to set this example within the church and reflect it in the marketplace.
King Nebuchadnezzar was driven away from his people, lived with the wild animals, and ate grass like the ox. Why? Pride. “I will not send you like others have gone. Pride will die before I announce you to the world” says the spirit of God. #goodnews #jesuslovesyou #believeandalign

2024.06.05 03:14 CZ-Ranger VA gun trader a great place for delusion

Look I understand you may want to change up your collection from time to time, who doesn’t? But Jesus Christ does this require you to try to sell your outdated bullshit for retail prices. I will never understand how people hop on there and list commonly found firearms for at or close to retail.
I’m not saying you need to lose your shirt on a sale, but if you haven’t put significant work into a gun or have literally never shot it with the original box and paper work there is no way you can expect to sell any of your stuff, doing this nonsense, I don’t know if it’s just old dudes trying to appease their wife by doing the “okay honey imma downsize my collection” then just half heartedly listing or what but lord these guys gotta accept that their glock chambered in .40 cal ain’t worth what they’re asking.

2024.06.05 03:10 No_Kaleidoscope1521 I have a vague recollection of an audio cassette story about a dream brother who didn’t really exist?

I randomly had a memory about a cassette tape I had in the 90s and it had kids audio stories on it. I remember particularly one that kinda haunted me. It was about a kid who had an older brother and at the end of the story we find out they had dreamed them? (Now bear with me it’s been many years so I’m trying to remember) They woke up one morning and was like, where’s my brother? And the family is like, what? You don’t have a brother. And I think it was like one of those things where someone has such a vivid dream of a parallel life and wakes up and believes it was real. But learns it’s not and genuinely mourns them. Anybody remember anything like this?

"Feet First!" by Lord D-Rock is a braggadocious fast-rap track featuring intricate wordplay and a barrage of syllables over an energetic, exotic-sounding beat. The song's chorus channels the spirit of a sea shanty, complete with a brief pirate tavern intro, adding a whimsical touch to its high-energy vibe. Despite its playful nature, the track's infectious energy and unique style show significant potential, driving a strong push since its release last Friday.
About Lord D-Rock: Charlotte, NC's own Lord D-Rock began his musical journey at age 8 with a guitar, eventually transitioning from punk rock bands to hip-hop at 14 with FL Studio. Known for his over-the-top, cartoonish style and fast raps, Lord D-Rock draws clear inspiration from the underground rappers he admired as a teen. His collaborations with local talents like Viz The Kid/Mai Resol, Marv Blunt, and Botch Jericho, as well as his business and arts entrepreneurship studies at NC State University, have shaped his unique sound and dynamic performances. Following the success of "Limoncello with Lamelo" and a Southeastern U.S. tour in 2022, Lord D-Rock is set to release a new EP and album before the birth of his son, D3.

2024.06.05 03:05 RaidriarXD The background of my character, Pablo Romanov:

Born in 3226 (age 84 as of 3310) to parents of Slavic, Spanish, and Italian heritage in the Purpleberry neighborhood of the city of New Texundrome on the planet Lave. He was raised in the prominent independent Xycon intellectual Dynasty, and attended a Xycon boarding school, learning skills such as ranged martial arts, economics, and sociology. He was given a Personal grant by doctor Walden, Lave’s governor, to study, and eventually teach both galactic history and events that happened on ancient earth.
At the university of Lave (UOL), he made several breakthroughs in his research, including comparing the conditions of humanity in the 21st century with those of us in the 34th century, as well as several theories about “turnings,” and how human societies cycle between prosperity and unrest.
His life took a turn for the worse when his former most gifted student, CMDR Kalib Siniitza (my previous character, who I wiped due to roleplaying reasons), had been arrested and lost in transit on the way to prison. His parents, both members of the UOL board of trustees, coerced Pablo into an early retirement, as he was the person who convinced Kalib to become a commander. Due to a dwindling retirement fund, he pulled all that he had left to join the Pilots’ Federation, soon embarking on a galaxy-wide adventure to find his missing student.

2024.06.05 03:02 copareee Is there anyone or anyone you know who got into UP Law with a 5.00 in their record?

Good day, everyone! I just learned that I am getting a 5.00 in one of my subjects, particularly my thesis subject. My GWA is also not stellar (won’t make the cutoff for any Latin honors). Since grades play a factor in UP Law admission, I would like to gauge my chances if I take the LAE and other law school entrance tests next year.
For context, I was never an outstanding student in terms of academic performance. I still believe I only got into UP (undergrad and not Diliman campus) by sheer luck and storming the heavens with prayers. My high school grades were underwhelming; I had two line of 7’s for Science (biology) and Computer, respectively which were only pulled up by my Math and English. Simply put, they were on the extreme ends of the scale. I was relieved to be part of the UPCAT batch as I would not have gotten in with grades alone.
Come college, I was faring well until the pandemic hit. Being locked up in a toxic home with barely anyone to talk to put me in a depressive spiral. I poured my energy into work, sometimes compromising my academics. Currently, I am on my 5th year (final year of no tuition huhu) as I transferred to another UP campus and the prerequisites and seasonal course offerings made it impossible to graduate “on time”. It seems that I would be extending until the first semester of the next Academic Year due to my thesis.
Given these factors, can I still get in UP Law? Will preparing for the LAE pay off if I have low to average grades? Of course, I am also looking into other law schools, particularly State U’s, as I really want to become a lawyer. But hey, if I can get into UP Law (excuse the kapal ng mukha hahahuhu may singko na nga umaasa pa), why not? The connections to be made there might help me more than in other law schools. I just want to gauge my chances if I am setting myself up for heartbreak.
Thank you so much and I hope to hear inspiring stories from you!

2024.06.05 03:01 dlschindler Ketchup On Satan's Burger

"Cancer, as known to the State of California, is this bag of roasted peanuts." Is what she said.
I wasn't paying attention anymore. I was staring instead at the goat.
I think that goat was actually Fred, and we just didn't know it yet.
We were still on our little detour when it started getting dark across the desert, rather quickly.
"I don't want to drive back in the dark. Let's stay in San Piana." Gloria had said.
That's when what appeared to be the same goat crossed our path.
I had to slam on the brakes, a cloud of road dust flowing over our vehicle and hovering over the road before us.
"I think that's the same goat." I said. I looked and saw it was atop someone's roof, staring down on us with red glowing eyes. I felt nervous while it looked at us, it's blackening silhouette against the evening sky looked sinister.
"Ew, I hate goats." Gloria got out her phone. "We have no reception out here."
I checked my phone - she was right.
"Let's find a place to stay for the night, then." I told her. We left our car parked in the middle of the dirt road leading into the village and took our bags to the nearest shack.
I banged on the door. A little old lady opened the door, with half her face looking like it would just fall off her skull at any moment. "Excuse me. We are travelling on our way to my sister's wedding, and we decided to drive this rental car. Now we are stuck here for the night, because the road back to civilization from this little detour is too dark and treacherous to drive back at night. So, we need to stay here tonight."
She said nothing, but reluctantly shuffled out of our way as we brought in our bags and made ourselves at home. I looked around at the little hovel, and despite looking like a primitive shack from the outside it was rather clean and tidy inside. "Not too bad. I thought it would be filthy in here."
"No vacancy." The old woman grumbled.
"Yes, of course. We have this little bed and breakfast exclusive to ourselves." I smiled, sat back in her rocking chair and put my dusty boots on the coffee table. The little old lady remained stoic, but I could tell she wasn't used to civilized folk. We took over the bedroom and left her on the couch, whining rather unprofessionally about her arthritis.
In the morning the lazy stiff had gone cold, forcing us to make our own breakfast. While we were eating, the village's chief showed up. He was wearing a brown button up shirt with a logo on it that vaguely looked like a county sheriff at a glance.
"Mrs. Summers has expired?" He noted the little old lady was still wrapped in an Afghan on her couch.
"Yeah, could you help me with that? She smells gross." I went to one end of the couch and indicated that I needed his help. He reluctantly assisted me while we took her and the whole couch outside and left her on the porch.
"Now I'll have to wait here with her until they can come get her. We have wild animals around here." Thoman sat, looking sad.
"Why the long face?" I asked.
"I just, it's sad she's gone. I've known Mrs. Summers since I was little. How'd she die?" He wondered.
I shrugged. "She was old?"
My wife brought out our bags, glaring at me for not helping.
"Well, we'll leave a nice review." I patted his shoulder and then left him there.
We tried to drive out of San Piana, but as we turned around, we couldn't quite find the road that led back the way we had come. We circled around for awhile while the villagers came out to see what we were doing. We waved as we drove past them and finally I stopped and asked how to get out of town.
They all pointed in eerie unison, with weird blank looks on their faces. I was feeling a little bit creeped out by them.
I was about to roll up my window, but never did.
As we were about to go, the goat came running at me from nowhere and ran its horns into the driver's tire. I never would have believed a goat could puncture rubber with its horns and tear it open like that. The whole car was being lifted on the impale, the goat bleating angrily.
When it was done it trotted away like nothing had just happened. Suddenly the airbags deployed.
"Help!" We were shouting for help. The villagers just stood there, staring at us.
"You are chosen by Azazel. You shall carry our sins, and the rotten soul of Mrs. Summers with you, out into the desert." Thoman was suddenly at my driver's side window like a jump scare. I was so surprised I gave him a high-pitched bark and almost slapped him. After the goat attack my nerves were shot.
"Your goat did that! You'll pay for the damage!" I proclaimed.
"All in good time." Thoman said with certainty.
I got out of the car, my knees wobbling from the scares. "What sort of place you running here? I want to see the manager!" I shoved Thoman and yelled.
"You will see Him." Thoman's eye's looked like goats' eyes when he said: 'Him'. I felt a chill, despite the warm desert sun.
I got back into the car and said to Gloria. "There's something wrong with this place."
She said nothing and I looked to her seat, empty. "Gloria?"
I got back out and looked around for her, seeing that the streets were now empty. Everyone had gone back inside their shacks. Gloria was nowhere in sight. I began walking around, banging on doors, looking in windows and searching for her, demanding to be told where she was. The villagers all played dumb, shrugging and acting like they didn't know any English.
As the minutes began to add up and I couldn't find her, a cold sweaty panic burst out of me. For about an hour I just ran around the place, looking desperately for her. When it got hot out and I was exhausted, I found myself sitting on the front porch of Mrs. Summers.
Thoman came walking up. "There you are. I had to come find you, see if I can help."
"Where's Gloria?" I asked, exhausted.
"I'm sure she's around somewhere." Thoman lit a smoke and looked at the empty couch. "Looks like Mrs. Summers has gone missing."
I looked and saw her corpse was removed, leaving only her shroud and some suspicious pawprints, like a team of oversized coyotes had dragged her away when nobody was looking. I shrugged.
"Gloria is missing." I pointed out. Thoman nodded as he realized I couldn't care less about the local wildlife problems.
"People go missing sometimes. They always get found sooner or later." Thoman said, somehow mirroring my attitude about the missing old woman, but regarding Gloria. I started feeling hostile towards him.
"Do you know where she is?" I stood up, trembling and sweating.
"Of course, but it won't do you no good. She can't be found if she doesn't want it." Thoman blew smoke at me, dropped his smoke and crushed it underfoot until it was a mess of tobacco, ashes, paper and the filter. "Still there."
He dusted his hands off on his jeans and walked away, leaving me there looking at the whisp of smoke hovering ephemerally over the ruined cigarette. I heard coyotes howling in the distant hills in the middle of the day, I heard wind chimes making discordant sounds, I heard the bleating of the goat sound like laughter and then the cackling of the old woman who I knew was dead.
I sat, and from my feet a numbness of fear began to climb up my legs like tarantulas. My skin was like braille, and my sweat ran in rivulets into stains darkening on my clothes. My eyes stared, listening to the desert while it spoke the name of its lord. I was afraid, I knew I was against something that wanted to eat me, somehow.
"Where are you?" I asked Gloria, my voice a dry cracking sound. I went into the old woman's shack and poured some of the iced tea she had made at some point before she died. It tasted like tomatoes with a hint of almonds and made me feel sleepy. While I walked to the couch, I dropped the glass and fell over.
Darkness made me blink, my eyes darting around for any source of light. All around me, in the midnight desert, candles stood upon cooled-melted stands made of old wax - atop human skulls. I was tied naked to a cactus, my body seemed to be covered in writing done in ketchup.
There was a humming sound of many human voices, not an unpleasant sound, except in the circumstances it frightened me to know I was surrounded by people humming in unison. Gloria was standing at one end of the triangle, holding a Nosegay Bouquet like it was some kind of offering towards the darkness. She wore nothing but an open hooded robe of shimmering crimson and scarlet.
I always find my wife exciting, so despite her betrayal, I still think she looked hot as a Satanic priestess. I'm pretty lucky.
The third corner of the triangle was an old woman wearing the skin of an oversized coyote, and also slippers made of coyote feet. She howled dramatically and her voice was answered by a disembodied growling from all around us.
I peed myself in terror, glad I wore nothing to absorb it. Instead, it just ran down my leg and collected under my left foot. I wanted to scream, but I felt weak and frightened, unable to do more than whimper pathetically in mortal dread. Gloria looked at my mess and smiled weirdly at me.
"Azazel, take from our community our sins, take our sins to the desert. Leave us another six years of peace. We offer you the slaughter of the scapegoat. Lord of the wilderness, accept our humble sacrifice." The gathered creeps were saying their prayer slowly in unison. They repeated it word-for-word again and again, long into the night.
Something was coming closer, something was coming. All around us desert creatures hopped and leapt and swooped, chittering, yipping, barking and hooting. Thousands of beetles, centipedes, tarantulas, snakes, scorpions, mice and crickets swarmed everywhere except the hot wax and flames of the candles. I cried and shivered, moaning in horror as the creatures crawled all over me.
The glowing eyes, a shade of golden brown, loomed from the darkness. As the shape of the entity formed in my mind around the darkness it was cloaked in, sleep overwhelmed me. I straight up fainted at the sight of Azazel.
The early dawn found me in the back of our rental car, driving on a spare. Gloria was driving, getting us to her sister's wedding on-time. "Why?" I choked out a word.
"I wouldn't bother, but his business is in jeopardy. When we cross the border into that state, we are in the territory of one of the most corrupt governments on the planet. Technically, California is part of the United States in name only. Everyone knows their government is run entirely by criminals. The new laws will eliminate her new husband's franchises. They'll lose everything and have to live with us. I hate my sister, you know that." Gloria enlightened me to her insane political opinion and family drama, without answering my question.
"You're telling me all that was about burgers and ketchup?" I wheezed, needing a drink.
"With this -" Gloria held up the bridal bouquet "My lord will bless their union. She cannot be made poor by the dealings of other devils. They are all on the same team, you know."
"Team McDonald?" I asked.
"Team Humanity. They just want what's best for us." Gloria explained.
"Demons want what's best for us?" I tried not to sound too incredulous.
"No. You are missing the point. Humans make the sins, they just feed. They are fair, if you ask them for a favor. They'll take care of you."
"Like getting someone elected?" I guessed.
"Yes. Exactly." Gloria agreed. I stared out at the scenery of Angel's Crest National Monument as we drove.
We arrived at the wedding and I kept thinking about how good Gloria looked as some kind of Satanist last night. I requested we spend some married couple time together and she considered it, but said we had no time for such things. She promised we'd spend some quality time together after the wedding, provided I play for her team.
"I can't promise anything." I said honestly to her. For whatever faults I have, I do insist on being honest with my spouse.
We parked in the alley and got ourselves ready to go into the wedding, still looking like we were out all night, despite twenty minutes of details.
"We need to get going." Gloria urged me. I was still fiddling with my tie in the passenger's mirror, since the driver's side one had a crack in it already. I kept reminding myself how this car was a rental, as the thought was easily slipping my mind under the stress I was feeling.
I hate weddings.
We went in and the place was simultaneously too loud with all the murmuring and too quiet with all the whispering. I kept hearing words of profanity and would look up to see if any of the holy statues were reacting. No weeping or bleeding.
It really freaks me out when statues cry and bleed and have flesh underneath when they get damaged. I'm pretty sure there are actual religious orders where they entomb their saints alive, after eating a diet of herbs meant to sedate and preserve the corpse sealed inside. Not too freaky, but I am just one person being judgmental, aren't I? I realize I am sorta disrespecting their whole culture in a way, and that's not how I mean for it to sound. It's just not for me - I get scared - that's all you need to know.
The blurry way the statues looked had me standing in front of the bride's aisle while everyone was wondering what I was looking at with that look on my face. I'd provided the distraction Gloria needed to ensure absolutely nobody except her saw her make the switch of the bouquets. She had an exact copy of her sister's bouquet, unironically.
Out behind the church we met and she had started a small fire in a coffee tin with holes around the bottom rim. She closed the knife she'd used and used the longneck lighter to get a couple candles going on the side.
"Hurry, someone might see us." I said as loudly as I dared, half hoping someone would hear me and look around the corner. I couldn't help it, part of me was against whatever we were doing. I still felt nervous, nervous we'd get caught or that we'd get away with it. My anxiety had me holding my hands like I was warming them to the fire.
"And white goes softly into flames, and black comes the smoke, pure and thick." Gloria dropped the blessed flowers into the flames.
"Uh, amen." I coughed.
"Let's go watch her get married." Gloria growled.
We went in and there was a wedding that happened while we were in our seats.
While most people were on their phones, texting or whatever they were doing, others actually watched the wedding.
I looked around and saw how some people were observing the ceremony. I too was looking at it, but trying not to. I knew I was seeing something there that they weren't, and it was pretty scary because I knew it was real. Therefore, it was invisible to all of them except me.
I leaned over to my wife and asked her: "Who is the goat up there with them?"
"That's Fred, she's like a bridesmaid." Gloria whispered back.
"Fred is a girl goat?" I asked.
"I can arrange for you to have visits from Fred, Sweetea, if that's something you're into." Gloria teased me weirdly, but I didn't really find it that amusing, just creepy. The last thing I wanted was to be haunted by an invisible goat-demon.
"Ew, no thanks." I said.
When the bouquet was tossed, Gloria caught it. She'd run in, shoving all the maidens like a quarterback. Some of them had fallen and gotten serious scrapes and bruises. Her sister yelled at her, but Gloria just looked at me and we took off around the corner and went for our car.
"Why aren't we leaving?" I asked.
"This has to be under her bed on her wedding night. My sister is a virgin, she has to be given to her new husband first." Gloria waved the bouquet in front of me, gripping it the same way she had gripped her foldable dagger earlier when she'd cut the coffee can.
"I have a feeling you mean Azazel." I gulped, realizing I couldn't go that far with her. I had to find a way to stop this.
"What's that?" Gloria asked me sharply.
"I'd best dealing be with Azazel?" I tried to change what I'd said, botching it horribly.
"No, you said something else." My wife said firmly, and frowning. I had a feeling my bed had just gone cold, and it scared me as much as the devils, because as I mentioned, Gloria is what's best in my life.
"I don't like this." I admitted. I also mentioned I really don't lie to her.
"She won't know the difference." Gloria smiled a little bit, a kind of evil villain-styled smile. I found it too sexy.
"Either way, it's wrong. I'm not sure exactly how, but it seems super perverted and evil and I won't allow it." I proclaimed.
Gloria slammed on the breaks and flicked out her knife and held it to my throat. "Get out."
I was left standing by the side of the road with my bags as she sped away, driving to some unknown honeymoon destination to put some cursed flowers under her sister's bed to summon some kind of husband demon for her wedding night. I'm pretty sure I had to stop this from happening.
"You still fighting the good fight?" Ronald McDonald stepped out from where he was waiting to catch a bus.
"I love my wife to death, but she is trying too hard to ruin her sister's wedding." I sat on my bags, feeling tired and my eyes watering.
"Don't cry." Ronald McDonald told me. "You got to man up right now. This is your chance to set things right."
I sniffled and tried to smile for Ronald McDonald. He smiled back and we shared a moment on that desolate highway.
"I've got something for you." He told me. He handed me a toy from a happy meal I'd gotten as a kid, the Muppet Baby Fozzie. I assembled his armor and put him on horseback. When I looked up, Ronald McDonald had caught the bus and was waving goodbye to me.
That's when the tears started. I knew I had to step up and stop her. I wiped 'em on my handkerchief and got my phone out of my pocket. I used the app we had to find where she was, after figuring out how to use the darn thing.
Then I used another app to summon a professional getaway driver named Breeze. She arrived in less than four minutes, the sound of her engine in earshot for the whole last minute as she took the three miles of road between us with fury. We said nothing to each other. I showed her the destination and the review I'd already written and nine one-hundred-dollar bills and she gave me a hand signal I guess meant we were in business. We caught up to Gloria and then I found the only likely honeymoon spot, a desert view bed and breakfast, of course.
We got ahead of Gloria and Breeze accepted her payment and vanished into thin air, leaving only burning tire tracks in her wake. I reached into the newlyweds open car and released the parking brake. With a muscle-pulling, ankle-twisting, hernia-inducing, disk-slipping effort I got the darn car moving, with the toy in my pocket making me pretend I could do this. I got their vehicle into the ditch, out of sight.
I went into the bed and breakfast and checked the guest registry. I was sweating and my suit was coming loose all over. I was limping and groaning, although I wasn't feeling what I'd done to myself yet. I looked at the names. They were here.
With the page torn out I started a new entry for the weekend and made up a couple fake names before the owner found me there.
"Uh, sorry." I said. I set the toy on the counter and fled.
I watched from the bushes while Gloria went in. See, I find simple plans without a lot of moving parts work best in any situation. Gloria found no evidence she'd come to the right place. The owner was already freaking out and gave her a stern goodbye.
Gloria tried to call her sister but got nothing. As she drove away my terrified state began to subside. I collapsed in the bushes, sleeping with a butterfly on my eyelash keeping me company.
"You did this." Gloria was saying. I was in the back seat of the rental again. She was smoking, and she'd smoked enough that the little strip had turned yellow, indicating we would be charged a cleaning fee for the damages. There was no ashtray, so she was just putting them out on the dashboard, leaving little burns and ash everywhere.
Her phone chimed and I saw she was chatting with one of her old boyfriends. She made sure I saw this. I rolled my eyes. It's not like we'd spent twenty years married. Her interrogation techniques needed improvement, especially since she would know - I don't lie to her. I'd never seen her smoke, not that I could remember, not for a long time.
I was under a lot of stress, but as I thought about it, she was smoking the whole trip.
My mind played a weird montage of all her light-ups. I felt like it needed a theme, so I hummed the theme to that show we were just watching. Then I looked at her and stopped humming, humming that cue for the other person who hums to hum along, you know what I mean. There should be a word for that kind of cue, probably is, but I'm not fluent in music vocabulary.
She didn't get it, but instead got mean and lifted her hand like she wanted me to stop humming because it was annoying or something. I stopped.
"You're not even Gloria." I complained.
"Took you long enough." The creature grinned.
My mind went wild with terror, as I realized she was some kind of horrible demon disguised as Gloria. She handed me the toy from McDonald's and it started to melt, becoming warped and evil looking. Her laugh sounded like a stretched audio recording of a laugh, all distorted and demonic, exactly like the best horror movie foley artists make it sound, and making me pee from my frozen spine bone and dry eye sockets staring till my eyes hurt.
Demonic laughter is unforgettable, a kind of maddening sensation, like something is being ripped out of you suddenly, a painful disorientation that you never quite stop feeling dizzy from. Its an ache, an unhealing wound of the psyche, always oozing and causing me some kind of misery. It lives there, like a tiny flea, too small to squish or catch, in its hole, in my mind.
Weirdly enough, the horrible little toy it gave me contains it, and that is why it must never be touched, for although it is a burnt figurine, it imprisons a part of the wilderness of souls.
I held it there, and looked up at the not Gloria. She looked just as relieved and bewildered as I felt. She was Gloria again, I could tell it was her.
"Where is it?" She asked me.
I held up the toy, having already dropped it into the burnt coffee tin to contain the prison for the sound that the demon had become when I'd listened to it, pretending to be my wife, therefore listening to my wife also.
"How's that work?" Gloria asked me, sobbing. She wanted reassurance it wasn't going to take control of her ever again.
"Well, we are in this together for better or worse." I figured I'd say.
"We weren't helping it. It already got me, using my hate for her against me. Remember when we got the wedding invite?"
"I thought it was weird there was a goat with glowing red eyes drawn on that." I pointed out.
"I never really wanted to hurt her." Gloria felt awful. I hugged her close and kissed her forehead.
"I'm the one who got hurt." I reminded her.
We went over all the things like cactus and such that I'd suffered, dehydration, scares, murder and mayhem, dagger stabbings, cannibalism, arson and demons. It was agreed I was the hero in all this, and I finally got some ketchup on Satan's burger.
It was delicious.

2024.06.05 02:56 Informal-Concern-365 [TX] is there any recourse as a defendant if the plaintiff submitted their civil suit in Spanish?

A friend was served a civil suit that was submitted in Spanish.
They had a friend translate it but is there anything my friend can do (like get it thrown out) if it’s in Spanish? I assume it’s just as valid but don’t want to make assumptions. It’s also a suit that was brought upon them due to the job they worked (where they no longer work), but the company is not listed as a defendant (another issue in itself).

2024.06.05 02:55 ConectadoPuertoRico Safety in Puerto Rico

Hola! My name is Devin and I am a travel guide based in Puerto Rico.
I've been asked several times about safety in Puerto Rico, so I wanted to share some insights from my own experience as a transplant from Virginia. Let me start by saying that Puerto Rico is generally very safe. However, like any other place in the world, crime does happen. It's important to approach your visit with common sense and awareness, just as you would anywhere else.
The Warmth and Kindness of Puerto Rican People
One of the most wonderful aspects of Puerto Rico is its people. Puerto Ricans are incredibly warm, welcoming, and kind-hearted. Since moving here, I’ve been embraced by the community and have always felt a sense of belonging. People are respectful, friendly, and eager to share their beautiful culture with newcomers.
In my experience, most issues arise when visitors don't respect local customs or act inappropriately. The key to a great visit is to be a good guest. Treat everyone with the same respect and kindness you’d expect in return.
The Importance of Speaking Spanish
While many Puerto Ricans speak English, Spanish is the primary language on the island. Making an effort to speak Spanish, even just a few basic phrases, can go a long way in showing respect and fostering positive interactions. It demonstrates that you appreciate the local culture and are willing to engage with people on their terms. Plus, it can be incredibly rewarding to connect with locals in their native language.
Being a Good Visitor on the Island
To ensure you have a safe and enjoyable time in Puerto Rico, here are a few tips on being a good visitor:
  1. Respect Local Customs and Traditions: Puerto Rico has a rich cultural heritage. Take the time to learn about local customs and show respect for traditions.
  2. Be Mindful of Your Surroundings: Just like in any other place, it's important to be aware of your surroundings. Avoid flashing valuables, especially in crowded areas, and stay in well-lit, populated places at night.
  3. Interact Respectfully: Approach interactions with an open heart and a respectful attitude. If you have questions or need assistance, don’t hesitate to ask locals – they’re usually more than happy to help.
  4. Avoid Taking Pictures in Certain Areas: La Perla is a close-knit community with a unique history. While it might be tempting to capture its beauty, taking pictures there can be seen as intrusive. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people or private property.
  5. Enjoy the Local Cuisine and Support Small Businesses: Puerto Rico’s food is amazing, and supporting local businesses helps the community thrive. Whether it’s a roadside stand or a family-run restaurant, you’ll get a true taste of the island’s flavor.
  6. Stay Informed: Keep an eye on local news and weather reports. Puerto Rico can experience hurricanes, and being informed will help you stay safe.
Final Thoughts
Living in Puerto Rico has given me a deep appreciation for the island and its people. While safety concerns are valid and should never be dismissed, it’s important to remember that, like anywhere else, your experience largely depends on your behavior and awareness. By being respectful, mindful, and informed, you can have an incredible and safe experience on this beautiful island.
I hope this post helps address some of the safety concerns and encourages you to enjoy all that Puerto Rico has to offer. If you have any more questions, feel free to reach out!

2024.06.05 02:49 o2electric Steelseries GG Stuck Loading

I’ve had this problem for a little less than a month now and I feel like I’ve tried almost everything. I try to open GG and it’s just stuck loading. The only thing I haven’t tried is uninstalling and reinstalling because I’ve used moments in the past and I don’t want to potentially lose that data. The videos are saved to my files but for some reason doesn’t include my microphone audio unless I export the clips specially from moments. I’ve seen a few other posts about it recently and people in the past have posted about similar issues. Does anyone have a fix that worked for them?

Brain Dead People May Not Be Dead – Here’s Why.

A brain-dead person is legally dead, but whether they may be biologically alive is still up for debate.

https://preview.redd.it/4s4777xmgn4d1.png?width=1456&format=png&auto=webp&s=6287459b72087c3cbc08e48bc5189c302b0bd335
By Marina Zhang June 02, 2024
It was 1989, and she was still a resident anesthesiologist, Dr. Heidi Klessig recalled in her book, “The Brain Death Fallacy.”
One day, her attending anesthesiologist told her to prepare a brain-dead organ donor for organ removal surgery.
Upon examining the patient, Dr. Klessig was surprised to find that the man looked exactly like every other critically ill, living patient and, in fact, better than most.
“He was warm, his heart was beating, and his monitors showed stable vital signs,” wrote Dr. Klessig. “Nevertheless, on his bedside exam, he checked all the boxes for brain death, and the neurologist declared him ‘dead.’”
Dr. Klessig’s supervising attending anesthesiologist asked her what anesthesia she was going to give the donor for the operation.
Her answer was a paralyzing agent so the donor would not move during surgery, as well as some fentanyl to blunt the body’s responses to pain.
The anesthesiologist looked at her and asked, “Well, are you going to give anything to block consciousness?”
Dr. Heidi Klessig in the 1990s. (Courtesy of Dr. Heidi Klessig)
Dr. Klessig was stunned. Consciousness blockers are given to patients to ensure they are not awake and aware during an operation.
Her education told her that brain-dead patients should not be conscious; apart from having a biologically active body, their minds were gone.
“I looked at him and said, ‘Why would I do that? Isn’t he dead?’”
Her attending anesthesiologist looked at her, asking, “Why don’t you give him something to block consciousness—just in case.”
“I get a pit in my stomach every time I remember his face,” Dr. Klessig told The Epoch Times. “I remember him looking at me over his mask ... It seemed very confusing.
“I did as I was told, and I’m very grateful [that I did.]”

Is Brain Dead, Dead?

Once a person is brain dead, they become legally dead, but their bodies are technically still alive.
The definition of brain death, also known as death by neurological criteria, is when a person falls into a permanent coma, loses their brainstem reflexes and consciousness, and cannot breathe without stimulus or support.
Yet a person’s heart can be beating, his or her organs functional, and he or she can fight off infection, grow, and even carry babies to term.
Though they may exhibit no signs of consciousness, some areas of the brain may still work. Around 50 percent of brain-death patients retain activity in their hypothalamus, which coordinates the body’s endocrine system and regulates body temperature.
However, all of this stops if they get taken off life support.
For this reason, physicians hotly contest whether brain death is synonymous with death.
Dr. James Bernat, a neurologist and professor emeritus at the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine, told The Epoch Times that people who are brain dead are dead because their bodies “no longer function as an organism as a whole.” Without the technology to develop these life support machines, these people would be dead, he said.
Radiologist Dr. Joseph Eble and previous academic hematopathologist Dr. Doyen Nguyen, on the other hand, wrote in an article that machines can only sustain life, not generate it—much like how a dead man could not breathe while on a ventilator.
Another topic regarding brain death is whether a patient can still feel.
Among European anesthesiologists, there is an ongoing debate about whether brain-dead organ donors should be given consciousness blockers during organ procurement.
Some argue that they should do so in case patients feel pain. Others disagree. Surprisingly, the anesthesiologists’ position is “not based on the claim that patients were incapable of experiencing pain,” but, instead, out of concern that the public might have doubts about the brain-death diagnosis, bioethicists Dr. Robert Truog and Franklin Miller (who has a doctorate in philosophy) wrote in their book, “Death, Dying, and Organ Transplantation.”
Dr. Ronald Dworkin, a research fellow and anesthesiologist, wrote in an article on organ procurement that he chose to give consciousness blockers because he thought his patient “might still be a ‘little alive’, [sic] whatever that means,” he said.
Mr. Miller, who is also a professor of medical ethics in medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, said the label of brain death is misleading. He and Dr. Truog, professor of anesthesiology and director emeritus of the Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics, are of the opinion that brain-dead people are alive but will likely not regain consciousness and recover.
Some say brain-dead patients might actually recover, as in the famous case of Jahi McMath, a 13-year-old girl who was declared brain-dead on Dec. 12, 2013. Her mother opposed her brain-death diagnosis and kept Jahi on life support for four and a half years. Though Jahi could not speak and never regained full consciousness, two neurologists testified that in her final days, she was in a “minimally conscious state.”
Jahi would move to instructions, nurses and doctors testified. Later, an electroencephalogram (EEG) detected brain wave signals.

The EEG of Jahi McMath, who was declared brain dead, should have shown no activity. (Illustration by The Epoch Times)
“Jahi McMath is the sterling example of someone ‘correctly/properly’ diagnosed as being brain dead who subsequently was documented to have recovered brain function,” Dr. Klessig said. The girl was indisputably diagnosed brain dead according to the guidelines of her time and would be diagnosed as such under the new guidelines, she added.

How Is Brain Death Assessed?

According to the most recent brain-death assessment guidelines, published by the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) in 2023, brain death is determined through a bedside assessment.
Before the brain-death assessment is conducted, neuroimaging must be done to ensure there is damage to the brain.
“If you see a normal CAT scan or a normal MRI, then you need to be very, very careful and cognizant that you may be going to a false-positive situation,” Dr. Panayiotis Varelas, one of the co-authors of AAN’s 2010 guidelines and chair of the Department of Neurology at Albany Medical College, told The Epoch Times.
After brain injury is confirmed, two doctors then complete the brain-death assessment. The patient is tested twice for their responsiveness to pain stimulus and brainstem reflexes, with a 24-hour interval between each test.
If the patient tests positive both times, the doctors will conduct an apnea test—considered the most conclusive—to see if the person has lost breathing reflexes. In children, there are two apnea tests, one after each bedside brain-death assessment.
https://preview.redd.it/bkmenrczgn4d1.png?width=1456&format=png&auto=webp&s=104619e5c0d3fd7a609d1c122f81c6027fbf7b14
To assess brain death, doctors use a pain stimulus, check for brainstem reflexes, then conduct an apnea test if the patient fails both tests. (Illustration by The Epoch Times)
During the apnea test, the patient is taken off the ventilator for 10 minutes. A tube carrying pure oxygen is inserted into the airways. If the patient does not breathe voluntarily, they are considered brain dead.
The apnea test comes with several risks.
For example, those with respiratory failure may experience complications, including severe hypotension, hypoxia, and cardiac arrhythmia.
In a patient whose brain is already compromised, an apnea test may worsen the person’s condition or cause further damage, Dr. Paul Byrne, regarded as a pioneer in neonatology and involved in treating supposedly brain-dead neonates, told The Epoch Times. A worse condition can compound a brain-death diagnosis in individuals who may actually be on track for recovery.
Misdiagnosis could also occur during brain-death assessment.
One example is Zack Dunlap. In November 2007, he got into a traffic accident and was pronounced brain dead at the hospital.
Zack Dunlap unconscious in the hospital. (Courtesy of Zack Dunlap)
Mr. Dunlap told The Epoch Times that he regained consciousness in the hospital after he was pronounced brain dead and his friends and family were saying their goodbyes.
He tried to scream and move, but nothing happened. Since he was an organ donor, he was soon scheduled for organ procurement.
The family prayed for Mr. Dunlap in the hospital. Mr. Dunlap’s cousin, who is a nurse, didn’t believe it was his time.
Zack Dunlap recovering in the hospital. (Courtesy of Zack Dunlap)
The cousin conducted additional tests on him. When the cousin pressed under Mr. Dunlap’s thumbnail, Mr. Dunlap pulled his arm to the other side of the body. This movement revoked the diagnosis.
After a few more days, Mr. Dunlap began breathing on his own. He was discharged a month later.
Dr. Varelas, who reviewed media reports on Mr. Dunlap, told The Epoch Times that Mr. Dunlap’s outcomes looked so good that he suspects some steps may have been missed during the assessment.
If doctors had adequate experience with brain-death assessments and diligently followed the AAN’s guidelines, false positives would not occur, said Dr. Varelas.
While his hospital makes 50 to 60 brain-death assessments every year, smaller community hospitals may make very few. Therefore, doctors at these hospitals may not have enough experience, miss signs, or carry out the brain-death assessments out of order, he added.
Dr. Bernat said that the test often performed incorrectly is the apnea test.
In 2010, neurologists conducted a review for the AAN to evaluate all cases of recovery from brain death in adults between 1996 and 2009. They determined that there were “no published reports of recovery” from brain death if patients were diagnosed correctly using the brain-death diagnostic criteria of the time. Mr. Dunlap’s case was not assessed.
To further complicate matters, several conditions can mimic brain death. These must be excluded before starting brain-death assessments.

Deceptive Death Conditions

The authors of the 2023 AAN guidelines advise that prior to brain-death assessment, all of the following conditions should be eliminated, including:
  • Hypothermia (low body temperature)
  • Autoimmune nervous system diseases
  • Drug overdoses
  • Poisoning
Therapeutic hypothermia, a treatment that lowers body temperature, is commonly used in patients who have been resuscitated after a cardiac arrest. Cooling devices are applied to help the body and brain recover and heal. However, hypothermic patients can take up to a week to regain consciousness
Autoimmune conditions like Guillain-Barré syndrome, which damages a person’s nervous system, can also rob someone of their reflexes and consciousness.
Dr. May Kim-Tenser, associate professor of clinical neurology at Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, reported in 2016 on a case where a patient with a form of Guillain-Barré syndrome was initially misdiagnosed as brain dead.
The patient was admitted to the hospital after showing severe symptoms. Within several days, he became unconscious and unresponsive, lost his brainstem reflexes, and needed a ventilator to breathe.
An apnea test was not conducted. Had the patient been tested in such a way, he would have failed because he would have been too weak to breathe, said Dr. Kim-Tenser.
The patient was then transferred to Dr. Kim-Tenser’s hospital, where he was prescribed autoimmune disease medication. Later, he regained consciousness and some function of his limbs.
Drug overdoses from opioids and cocaine can also cause signs of brain death. An overdose on the muscle relaxant baclofen, for instance, has been known to mimic brain death.
“The brain death guidelines talk about what the mimickers are but not necessarily ways to exclude them. A neurologist should be able to exclude them with testing,” said Dr. Kim-Tenser.

Conflicts of Interest

“There is an intense interest in [brain death] by [organ-procurement organizations], the transplantation community, and patients on organ-waiting lists,” Dr. Varelas wrote in a 2016 article on brain death.
Around 90 percent of all organ donors are brain-dead people. This is because the brain-death definition allows surgeons to procure healthy organs without invoking the “dead-donor rule.”
According to the dead-donor rule, an ethical norm, organ donors must be declared dead before organ procurement, and organ procurement must not cause the donor’s death.
Organs cannot be transplanted from people who are biologically dead, which occurs after a person’s heart stops and he or she cannot be resuscitated.
“When you’re biologically dead, the loss of oxygen to your vital organs causes them to decompose so quickly that you cannot donate an organ,” said Dr. Klessig.

That said, tissues like cornea, cartilage, bone, and skin can come from dead donors. Live-organ donation can also be done to transplant the lobe of a lung, liver, or kidney.
Doctors who make brain-death assessments must not be involved in the organ procurement process.
“We try to disassociate ourselves from the organ-donation process,” Dr. Varelas said. “In my mind, we try to save the patient’s life, and that’s the goal because the Hippocratic Oath is to do no harm.”
Nevertheless, conflicts of interest exist. Forty-nine percent of the authors of the AAN’s 2023 guidelines on brain-death assessment reported conflicts of interest related to organ procurement.
Synonymizing brain death with death is an issue of non-transparency, Mr. Miller said. However, he said he would not consider organ procurement unethical as long as the donor is well informed.
In the United States, many people sign up to become organ donors when they apply for a driver’s license, and most of them assume that their organs will only be removed in the case of their death, Dr. Klessig said.
“They think, ‘If I’m as good as done, might as well take my organs anyway,’” Dr. Byrne said.
The reality is that their donor status can result in their organs being procured if they become “brain dead,” with their family members unable to override donor status.

Still a Mystery

The concept of brain death started half a century ago, a few years after the first organ transplant was successfully performed.
Organ procurement from comatose people started in the late 1950s. However, this was rare and not practiced under any guidelines. During the same era came a shift in the definition of death.
In 1959, French doctors Pierre Mollaret and Maurice Goulon coined the term “le coma dépassé,“ meaning ”beyond coma“ or ”irreversible coma,“ as a condition synonymous with death. Gradually, brain death, also called ”death of the nervous system,” became a new definition, and organs could, therefore, be procured from such patients.
A month after Dr. Barnard’s monumental surgery, Dr. Norman Shumway performed the first human heart transplant in the United States at Stanford Hospital, removing the heart from a brain-dead donor.
In August of 1968, the Ad Hoc Committee of Harvard Medical School published “A Definition of Irreversible Coma” in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
They defined irreversible coma as a “new criterion for death,” which has become a foundational cornerstone to the brain-death definition.
Despite this, scientists are still uncertain whether the definition or the consequent assessment is perfect.
Regarding Mr. Dunlap’s recovery, Dr. Varelas said, “I am glad this young man survived.” He believes the family’s prayers for Mr. Dunlap could have contributed to his outcome.
“There are powers much higher than our medical knowledge—or the lack thereof,” he said.
“The secret of life—including the definition of life—still remains the deepest and most mysterious one,” said Dr. Dworkins.
Nature may never “permit anyone to know the exact point where brain death becomes real death,” he added.
