These conflicts showcase the varied roles and experiences of “Nephesh Hummus” “souls on earth” “individuals” in military engagements and peacekeeping efforts across the globe. These conflicts span across different regions and time periods, demonstrating the diverse experiences and contributions of “Nephesh Hummus” “souls on earth” “individuals” aka “black” “African American” “Negro” soldiers and fighters throughout history.
These conflicts highlight the global presence and contributions of black individuals in military operations and peacekeeping efforts around the world.
Yet, we still have to fight in court and by law enforcement to be respected? There is no constitutional laws that protect the “majority” from the tyrant minority thus resulting in an exhaustive number of years of injustices. See Claims and other motions in Case 1:24 cv 00479 Clement vs Garland. Even in my effort to obtain solutions, I was ignored by all parties said to be a representative for 1 year and a half, and still no answer to date. My certified mail was also refused. I then had the challenge to submit my complaint to the District Court for an entry for judgement, Court rules state the press will be notified for all Summary judgment cases. That did not happen. I filed to campaign for President as an Independent party and the number of signature requirements were dramatically different and biased. I was met with lengthy case time and intentional clerical errors.
I have declared State of Loc Nation the Hyper Power to the United States Superpower. These wars would not have been won nor the position of America not be achieved without our forefathers' contribution. It is so written. I have submitted our Defacto/Dejure and all other documents needed. 1:24 cv 00479-RC

2024.06.03 14:23 RolexTourbillion For catholics, masturbation (refered as "self-abuse", "solitary vice" or "pollution" in the past) is a grave sin and has to be assumed to be a mortal sin every time.

Indeed, even the "modern soft" Catholic Church is still holding it as a grave sin (objective) and is pretty much always a mortal sin (relative, being a mortal sin depends on several things but this sin is so obviously grave that one has to assume he has sinned mortally and confess to a priest in confession). Here I will be quoting the Catholic Catechism that has been published in 1992.
6th commandment
You shall not commit adultery.112 You have heard that it was said, "You shall not commit adultery." But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.113
Offenses against chastity
2351 Lust is disordered desire for or inordinate enjoyment of sexual pleasure. Sexual pleasure is morally disordered when sought for itself, isolated from its procreative and unitive purposes.
2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action."137 "The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose." For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved."138 To form an equitable judgment about the subjects' moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety, or other psychological or social factors that lessen or even extenuate moral culpability.
2353 Fornication is carnal union between an unmarried man and an unmarried woman. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of persons and of human sexuality which is naturally ordered to the good of spouses and the generation and education of children. Moreover, it is a grave scandal when there is corruption of the young.
2354 Pornography consists in removing real or simulated sexual acts from the intimacy of the partners, in order to display them deliberately to third parties. It offends against chastity because it perverts the conjugal act, the intimate giving of spouses to each other. It does grave injury to the dignity of its participants (actors, vendors, the public), since each one becomes an object of base pleasure and illicit profit for others. It immerses all who are involved in the illusion of a fantasy world. It is a grave offense. Civil authorities should prevent the production and distribution of pornographic materials.
IN BRIEF
2392 "Love is the fundamental and innate vocation of every human being" (FC 11).
2393 By creating the human being man and woman, God gives personal dignity equally to the one and the other. Each of them, man and woman, should acknowledge and accept his sexual identity.
2394 Christ is the model of chastity. Every baptized person is called to lead a chaste life, each according to his particular state of life.
2395 Chastity means the integration of sexuality within the person. It includes an apprenticeship in self-mastery.
And the 9th commandment is about Purity.
You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ass, or anything that is your neighbor's.298 Every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.299
2514 St. John distinguishes three kinds of covetousness or concupiscence: lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life.300 In the Catholic catechetical tradition, the ninth commandment forbids carnal concupiscence; the tenth forbids coveting another's goods.
2515 Etymologically, "concupiscence" can refer to any intense form of human desire. Christian theology has given it a particular meaning: the movement of the sensitive appetite contrary to the operation of the human reason. the apostle St. Paul identifies it with the rebellion of the "flesh" against the "spirit."301 Concupiscence stems from the disobedience of the first sin. It unsettles man's moral faculties and, without being in itself an offense, inclines man to commit sins.302
2516 Because man is a composite being, spirit and body, there already exists a certain tension in him; a certain struggle of tendencies between "spirit" and "flesh" develops. But in fact this struggle belongs to the heritage of sin. It is a consequence of sin and at the same time a confirmation of it. It is part of the daily experience of the spiritual battle:
For the Apostle it is not a matter of despising and condemning the body which with the spiritual soul constitutes man's nature and personal subjectivity. Rather, he is concerned with the morally good or bad works, or better, the permanent dispositions - virtues and vices - which are the fruit of submission (in the first case) or of resistance (in the second case) to the saving action of the Holy Spirit. For this reason the Apostle writes: "If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit."303
I. Purification of the Heart
2517 The heart is the seat of moral personality: "Out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, fornication...."304 The struggle against carnal covetousness entails purifying the heart and practicing temperance:
Remain simple and innocent, and you will be like little children who do not know the evil that destroys man's life.305
2518 The sixth beatitude proclaims, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."306 "Pure in heart" refers to those who have attuned their intellects and wills to the demands of God's holiness, chiefly in three areas: charity;307 chastity or sexual rectitude;308 love of truth and orthodoxy of faith.309 There is a connection between purity of heart, of body, and of faith:
The faithful must believe the articles of the Creed "so that by believing they may obey God, by obeying may live well, by living well may purify their hearts, and with pure hearts may understand what they believe."310
2519 The "pure in heart" are promised that they will see God face to face and be like him.311 Purity of heart is the precondition of the vision of God. Even now it enables us to see according to God, to accept others as "neighbors"; it lets us perceive the human body - ours and our neighbor's - as a temple of the Holy Spirit, a manifestation of divine beauty.
II. The Battle for Purity
2520 Baptism confers on its recipient the grace of purification from all sins. But the baptized must continue to struggle against concupiscence of the flesh and disordered desires. With God's grace he will prevail - by the virtue and gift of chastity, for chastity lets us love with upright and undivided heart; - by purity of intention which consists in seeking the true end of man: with simplicity of vision, the baptized person seeks to find and to fulfill God's will in everything;312 - by purity of vision, external and internal; by discipline of feelings and imagination; by refusing all complicity in impure thoughts that incline us to turn aside from the path of God's commandments: "Appearance arouses yearning in fools";313 - by prayer:
I thought that continence arose from one's own powers, which I did not recognize in myself. I was foolish enough not to know . . . that no one can be continent unless you grant it. For you would surely have granted it if my inner groaning had reached your ears and I with firm faith had cast my cares on you.314
2521 Purity requires modesty, an integral part of temperance. Modesty protects the intimate center of the person. It means refusing to unveil what should remain hidden. It is ordered to chastity to whose sensitivity it bears witness. It guides how one looks at others and behaves toward them in conformity with the dignity of persons and their solidarity.
2522 Modesty protects the mystery of persons and their love. It encourages patience and moderation in loving relationships; it requires that the conditions for the definitive giving and commitment of man and woman to one another be fulfilled. Modesty is decency. It inspires one's choice of clothing. It keeps silence or reserve where there is evident risk of unhealthy curiosity. It is discreet.
2523 There is a modesty of the feelings as well as of the body. It protests, for example, against the voyeuristic explorations of the human body in certain advertisements, or against the solicitations of certain media that go too far in the exhibition of intimate things. Modesty inspires a way of life which makes it possible to resist the allurements of fashion and the pressures of prevailing ideologies.
2524 The forms taken by modesty vary from one culture to another. Everywhere, however, modesty exists as an intuition of the spiritual dignity proper to man. It is born with the awakening consciousness of being a subject. Teaching modesty to children and adolescents means awakening in them respect for the human person.
2525 Christian purity requires a purification of the social climate. It requires of the communications media that their presentations show concern for respect and restraint. Purity of heart brings freedom from widespread eroticism and avoids entertainment inclined to voyeurism and illusion.
2526 So called moral permissiveness rests on an erroneous conception of human freedom; the necessary precondition for the development of true freedom is to let oneself be educated in the moral law. Those in charge of education can reasonably be expected to give young people instruction respectful of the truth, the qualities of the heart, and the moral and spiritual dignity of man.
2527 "The Good News of Christ continually renews the life and culture of fallen man; it combats and removes the error and evil which flow from the ever-present attraction of sin. It never ceases to purify and elevate the morality of peoples. It takes the spiritual qualities and endowments of every age and nation, and with supernatural riches it causes them to blossom, as it were, from within; it fortifies, completes, and restores them in Christ."315
IN BRIEF
2528 "Everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (⇒ Mt 5:28).
2529 The ninth commandment warns against lust or carnal concupiscence.
2530 The struggle against carnal lust involves purifying the heart and practicing temperance.
2531 Purity of heart will enable us to see God: it enables us even now to see things according to God.
2532 Purification of the heart demands prayer, the practice of chastity, purity of intention and of vision.
2533 Purity of heart requires the modesty which is patience, decency, and discretion. Modesty protects the intimate center of the person.

2024.06.02 20:18 Impressive-Lack-4352 Time from TJO to starting background check

Hi all, I received my TJO on Friday, May 24th (written, verbal was a day prior). I followed up on Wednesday, May 29th and the HR person responded right away that I was getting sent to security and should be receiving an email from them. As of today June 2nd, I have not received an email from security yet so have not filled out any additional forms other than my OF 306. The position requires a public trust background investigation.
My question is how often should I follow up to make sure my information isn’t stuck in security limbo but also not be annoying?
Second question, I had been a federal employee for 2 years about 5 years ago, and then I left to pursue a PhD, which I just completed. I was employed at a different federal agency than the one I have the TJO for. I had done the public trust background investigation for my previous role.
My second question is will my previous employment as a federal employee change the background investigation process?

2024.06.02 09:54 idlechat [2024 Read-Along] Week 23, The Silmarillion - Quenta Silmarillion - Of Beren and Lúthien (Chapter 19)

Thereafter for four years more Beren wandered still upon Dorthonion, a solitary outlaw; but he became the friend of birds and beasts, and they aided him, and did not betray him, and from that time forth he ate no flesh nor slew any living thing that was not in the service of Morgoth.
Welcome one and all again to the 2024 Read-Along and Discussion of The Silmarillion here on tolkienfans. For Week 23 (Jun 2-Jun 8), we will be exploring The Quenta Silmarillion (The History of the Silmarils) chapter 19, "Of Beren and Lúthien."

Following the Dagor Bragollach, Barahir and his companions continued to defend their land, Dorthonion. It was to Tarn Aeluin, a lake in the east of that country, that they made their abode. Morgoth could not discover it, and he ordered Sauron to eliminate them. Through Sauron's devices, a member of the group named Gorlim was deceived into revealing the retreat of Barahir, and the company was slain by Sauron's Orcs. All perished, except Beren, son of Barahir, who was away on a perilous errand at the time. Coming to Beren in a dream, a wraith of Gorlim told him all and urged him to return in haste. Alas, he came too late and found his kin slain. He buried his father, and slew the band of orcs responsible, reclaiming from them the Ring of Felagund.
Thus Beren roamed Dorthonion, slaughtering many servants of Morgoth, and so a bounty was set upon his head, and Sauron's armies hounded him to such an extent that he was forced to flee Dorthonion. Journeying through the horrors and terrors of Ered Gorgoroth and Nan Dungortheb he came at length, by paths untrodden, to Doriath, where no mortal had yet been before.
Staggering into the woods of Neldoreth, he chanced upon Lúthien, daughter of Thingol and Melian, dancing in a clearing beside Esgalduin. He became utterly enchanted by her, and his agony departed him, for Lúthien was the most beautiful of all of the Children of Ilúvatar. He called out to her, naming her Tinúviel and as she looked on him, doom fell upon her, and she loved him. For a brief time, long ago in the woods of Doriath, their joy was the greatest that has been, amongst any of the Children of Ilúvatar.
However, Daeron the minstrel loved Lúthien also, and betrayed them to Thingol, who was wrathful. For Lúthien he set above all things, while of mortal Men he took little heed. And so Thingol demanded to know Beren's business in Doriath. Finding resolve, Beren answered that his fate led him to what he sought not — Lúthien. At this, many thought Beren would be slain. Indeed desiring his death, Thingol set upon him the nigh hopeless task of bringing to him a Silmaril from the crown of Morgoth. Only then would he allow Beren to receive Lúthien as his bride. Thus began in earnest, the Quest of the Silmaril.
Turning towards Nargothrond, Beren sought out the counsel of Finrod Felagund, who, recalling his vow to the kin of Barahir, gathered together a band of his most loyal chieftains. Departing from Angband, Felagund used his craft to disguise the group as a pack of orcs, and so they hoped to pass by Tol-in-Gaurhoth unnoticed. But Sauron was suspicious of them, and duelled long in song with Felagund. But alas the victory belonged to Sauron, and stripping them of their disguises, they were made to languish in a deep pit. One-by-one, Sauron sent werewolves to devour the companions in the hope of obtaining their purpose, but all were faithful to their lord. When the wolf came for Beren, Felagund slew it with his bare hands, but in doing so, was mortally wounded. Bidding Beren a final farewell, he died in the darkness of Tol-in-Gaurhoth, the tower he himself had built long ago. Thus ended the fairest and most beloved of the Noldor, Finrod Felagund.
In the hour of Beren's capture, a heaviness fell upon the heart of Lúthien and she left Doriath in pursuit of him. Encountering Celegorm and Curufin, and Huan, the Hound of the Valar, she was glad, but through treachery, the two brothers took her as prisoner to Nargothrond. But Huan had grown to love her and for the first time spoke, giving her counsel, and helped her to escape. With speed, the two came to Tol-in-Gaurhoth at the hour of Felagund's death, and Sauron smiled. For he knew a great reward would await him for the capture of Lúthien, daughter of the Maia Melian. So he sent wolves, including Draugluin, father of werewolves, to capture her, but Huan slew them all. Then Sauron came himself—taking the form of a mighty wolf—and fought with Huan, but not even he could defeat the Hound of the Valar. Thus he was forced to yield Tol-in-Gaurhoth to Lúthien, and he fled. Lúthien removed the ill shadow from that Isle, and came to Beren. Together, they buried the body of Felagund and left that place. And Huan returned to his master, Celegorm.
By chance, the two brothers Celegorm and Curufin came upon Beren and Lúthien near to the Forest of Brethil, and sought to take Lúthien by force and kill Beren. But in that hour, Huan forsook the service of Celegorm and came to the aid of Beren, who leapt onto the horse of Curufin, knocking him off. After taking horse and knife Angrist from Curufin, Beren bade him return, impoverished, to his kin. Being humiliated, Curufin took the bow of Celegorm and fired at Lúthien. Springing to protect her, Beren was hit. Huan pursued the brothers who fled, and upon returning, he brought a herb to Lúthien who, by her craft, healed Beren. Eventually, they returned to Doriath.
There, Beren left Lúthien in the care of Huan and departed for Angband. Arriving at the borders of Anfauglith, Beren lamented in the belief that this would be his final peril and sung the farewell Song Of Parting. But unsought for, Lúthien appeared upon Huan, and came to him once more. Huan spoke for the second time then, counselling Beren that he could no longer save Lúthien from her fate. And so, taking the guise of Draugluin, and the bat-like messenger-of-Sauron Thuringwethil, together Beren and Lúthien passed through perils untold until they arrived, weary and weather-worn, at the Gates of Angband.
To their dismay, guarding the entrance to Angband was a creature of whom no news had previously reached the ears of the Noldor: the great wolf Carcharoth. He was suspicious of them, for news of the demise of Draugluin had reached Angband, and approached them with menace. But by some power of Lúthien, she commanded the wolf to slumber, and into unconsciousness he fell. Then Beren and Lúthien crossed the threshold of Angband, descended down the subterranean chambers, and together wrought the greatest deed that has ever been dared, by Elves or by Men, in the history of Arda. For they arrived in the throne-room of Morgoth — a court filled with horrors untold, where Balrogs patrolled. Lúthien's disguise was robbed of her by the will of Morgoth, and, standing before his gaze, she began to sing for him a song of such outstanding power and beauty, that he was put into dreams of the Void, and he slammed into the ground, unconscious. All his court slumbered. Then removing his wolf-hame, Beren cut, with Angrist, a Silmaril from the crown of Morgoth. It occurred to him then to bring out of Angband not one, but all three Silmarils. But such was not his fate, for Angrist snapped, and a fragment smote the cheek of Morgoth. He groaned. All the legions of Angband stirred in their sleep.
Then fear and terror unknown fell upon Beren and Lúthien, and realising their imminent peril, they fled. But alas, at the surface, they found Carcharoth conscious and wrathful. Beren held the Silmaril high; Carcharoth hesitated, and for a moment was afraid. But his spirit flew into a rage, and he bit off the right hand of Beren, consuming the Silmaril. It seared his innards, and he fled south, howling in a fit of madness.
The fangs of Carcharoth were laced with venom, and death approached Beren. So the Quest of the Silmaril would have ended in despair, but unlooked for, Thorondor came with his Eagles to the aid of Beren and Lúthien, even while droves issued forth from the Gates of Angband, and bore the two away from the reach of Morgoth. South they flew, passing above the hidden city of Gondolin, shining like a jewel in the sun. Yet Lúthien wept, for she feared the death of Beren. The Eagles left them at the borders of Doriath, in the same glade where Beren had left Lúthien and departed on the Quest. Huan came to Lúthien and again, and the two of them tended to him. There he lay, in dreams of anguish, until, as Lúthien's last hopes were fading, he awoke. And it was spring.
Thereafter, he was given the name Erchamion, "the One-handed". The two then tarried for a time in those woods, for it was pleasant to them, but Beren would not forget his Oath to Thingol. So after a time they returned to Doriath, which had fallen into grief at the loss of Lúthien. News of their coming had spread far, and they arrived in Menegroth with a large following.
Beren and Lúthien told the tale of their Quest, to the astonishment of all. It seemed to Thingol then that the Man before him was among the great in Arda, and Lúthien's love was a thing strange to him. It came to his mind then that no power of Elves or Men, or Maiar or Valar, or any other power in Arda, might interfere with their fate. And his mood towards Beren was softened. Thus, at last he relented, and Beren took the hand of Lúthien before the throne of her father.
For a time, there may have been some semblance of peace and joy in Doriath, but out of the north came the beast Carcharoth. A hunting party was assembled, consisting of Huan, the Hound of the Valar, Mablung of the Heavy Hand, Beleg Strongbow, Beren Erchamion, and Thingol, King of Doriath. As they rode forth for the Hunting of the Wolf, a shadow fell upon Lúthien, and to her it seemed as though the world had been drained of all colour, and beauty, and life. The party came upon Carcharoth near the northern waterfalls of Esgalduin. The wolf leapt for Thingol, but Beren came between them, suffering a deadly wound. Huan slew Carcharoth, but was himself fatally injured. Laying beside Beren, he spoke for the final time, bidding Beren farewell. So they parted. Mablung ripped open the wolf and placed the Silmaril in Beren's living hand, who asked Thingol to receive it. "Now the Quest is achieved, and my doom full wrought", he said. And he spoke no more. They bore Beren back to Menegroth, and Lúthien met them. She bade him await her beyond the Western Sea. Opening his eyes, he looked upon her one last time before he died. So ended the Quest of the Silmaril. But the tale of Beren and Lúthien did not end there.
For the spirit of Beren lingered in the Halls of Mandos, awaiting Lúthien upon the dim shores of the Outer Sea, where they could say their final farewell. For it is from there that the spirits of Men depart the world, never to return; such is the Gift of Ilúvatar. The spirit of Lúthien fled her body, and found its way to the Halls of Mandos. Kneeling before the Vala, she sang to him a song so beautifully sorrowful that Mandos was moved to pity. But it was not within his power to alter the fates of the Children of Ilúvatar, and so he called on Manwë, who sought guidance from Ilúvatar.
Two choices were put before Lúthien. On account of her extraordinary labours and grief in life, she was permitted to remain in Valinor, forgetting all pains she had known. But there Beren, being mortal, could not follow. The second choice was that she might return with Beren to dwell in Middle-earth, as a mortal, with no guarantee of joy in life. There, both would be subject to a second death. This second option she chose, forsaking the Undying Lands, for a mortal life with Beren. So it came to pass that long ago, Lúthien Tinúviel and Beren Erchamion at last left the confines of the world, together.[1]
Of Beren and Lúthien at The Lord of the Rings Wiki: This chapter tells The Lay of Leithian, i.e. Beren's quest for a Silmaril with Lúthien, and tells of the deaths of Finrod Felagund, Draugluin, Carcharoth, Huan (Beren's wolf-hound), and of Beren himself.

Questions for the week:
  1. There seems almost no motivation for the love between Beren and Lúthien. They just look at each other and it happens. Why? Does Beren love Lúthien mainly because of her celestial beauty? Why does she love him?
  2. Why didn't the Silmaril burn Beren's hand?
  3. Why did Beren’s spirit go to the Halls of Mandos after he died? Do all men’s spirits go there, only to typically be sent off to who knows where, or was he an exception for some reason?
  4. How did Lúthien end up in the Hall of Mandos?
  5. How did Huan beat Sauron?

Directors at the Box Office: Richard Donner

Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Richard Donner's turn.
Initially, Donner wanted to develop a career as an actor. He gained a bit part in a television program directed by Martin Ritt, who encouraged Donner to become a director instead, and he hired Donner as his assistant. Through his connections in Desilu, he started directing commercials. In the 60s, he transitioned into television, directing episodes for shows like The Twilight Zone, The Fugitive, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Get Smart, and Gilligan's Island. Afterwards, he had his chance to direct films.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

It should be noted that as he started his career in the 1960s, the domestic grosses here will be adjusted by inflation. The table with his highest grossing films, however, will be left in its unadjusted form, as the worldwide grosses are more difficult to adjust.

X-15 (1961)

"Actually filmed in space!"
His directorial debut. It stars David McLean, Charles Bronson, James Gregory and Mary Tyler Moore, and presents a fictionalized account of the X-15 research rocket aircraft program, the test pilots who flew the aircraft, and the associated NASA community that supported the program.
There are no box office numbers available, but it is said that it had a short and poor theatrical run. Reviews were mixed, and Moore said she's not proud of the film.

Salt and Pepper (1965)

"Join the club."
His second film. It stars Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, Michael Bates, Ilona Rodgers and John Le Mesurier, and follows two nightclub owners finding themselves in trouble over a woman's death.
It received mixed reviews, and it earned $1.75 million in rentals.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $1,750,000 in rentals. ($17.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $1,750,000.

Lola (1970)

"It may be love... but it's definitely exhausting!"
His third film. It stars Charles Bronson and Susan George, and follows a 38-year-old writer of pornographic novels who meets and falls in love with a sixteen-year-old school girl whilst living in London.
There are no box office figures, but you can be sure of something: it was panned by everyone.

The Omen (1976)

"If something frightening happens to you today, think about it."
His fourth film. It stars Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, David Warner, Harvey Spencer Stephens, Billie Whitelaw, Patrick Troughton, Martin Benson, and Leo McKern. The film's plot follows Damien Thorn, a young child replaced at birth by his father, unbeknownst to his wife, after their biological child dies shortly after birth. As a series of mysterious events and violent deaths occur around the family and Damien enters childhood, they come to learn he is in fact the prophesied Antichrist.
Producer Harvey Bernhard came up with the idea for a film about the Antichrist after talking with one of his friends. WB was on board, but they later pulled out, so 20th Century Fox agreed to distribute the film. Donner favored an ambiguous reading of the script under which it would be left for the audience to decide whether Damien was the Antichrist or whether the series of violent deaths in the film were all just a string of unfortunate accidents. Seltzer rejected the ambiguity favored by Donner and pressed for an interpretation of his script that left no doubt for the audience that Damien Thorn was the Antichrist and that all of the deaths in the film were caused by the malevolent power of Satan, the interpretation that Bernhard chose to go with.
There were some... dark stories over the making of the film. Some aren't confirmed, but others are verified. So take the following with huge grains of salt.
In September 1975, Peck was flying to London, and during the flight, lightning struck the plane. Shortly after, executive producer Mace Neufeld's plane was also struck by lightning while en route to Los Angeles. That's twice in a span of only a few weeks. Then, writer David Seltzer's plane was also struck by lightning. And, while filming in Rome, lightning narrowly missed striking Bernhard. Lightning may never strike twice, but four times, and to different people whose only six degrees of separation at the time was The Omen? Oh, it gets even creepier. A scene was postponed, which meant Peck was not needed on the set, so a private jet that the crew was going to charter to bring Peck in was not necessary. The next day, it was reported that the plane they had intended to book hit a flock of birds and crashed, killing everyone on board.
Neufeld, probably already on edge after his plane was struck by lightning, was planning to eat at a restaurant nearby, but it was hit by an IRA bombing. The day after filming, the hotel that Donner had stayed at was also bombed.
John Richardson, the set designer, created a particularly macabre scene where a character dies from decapitation resulting from an automobile accident. While in Holland in August 1976, Richardson and his assistant, Liz Moore, were struck by a freakishly unfortunate fate. They fell victims to a head-on-collision, where Moore was cut in half, in similar fashion to the one Richardson had designed for the film. It happened in a Friday the 13th, near a road sign which says: “Ommen, 66.6 km.”
Does that send you shivers down your spine?
Is all of this true? I... I'm not sure. I don't fully believe it. But I also don't fully not believe it. Whatever the case, it's truly one of the most insane behind-the-scenes stuff.
After a slate of weak films, Donner finally got his big break here. The film earned $78 million worldwide, becoming a huge box office success. While it initially received mixed reviews, its reputation grew with time and it has been named as one of the best horror films of the 1970s. It would spawn a franchise, but Donner didn't return for the director's chair. Why? He was preparing for something super.
  • Budget: $2,800,000.
  • Domestic gross: $60,922,980. ($335.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $78,722,980.

Superman (1978)

"You'll believe a man can fly."
His fifth film. Based on the DC Comics character, it stars Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Christopher Reeve, Jeff East, Margot Kidder, Glenn Ford, Phyllis Thaxter, Jackie Cooper, Trevor Howard, Marc McClure, Terence Stamp, Valerie Perrine, Ned Beatty, Jack O'Halloran, Maria Schell, and Sarah Douglas. It depicts the origin of Superman, including his infancy as Kal-El of Krypton, son of Jor-El, and his youthful years in the rural town of Smallville. Disguised as reporter Clark Kent, he adopts a mild-mannered disposition in Metropolis and develops a romance with Lois Lane while battling the villainous Lex Luthor.
Ilya Salkind had first conceived the idea for a Superman film in late 1973, and he bought the rights with his father Alexander the following year. DC wanted a list of actors that were to be considered for Superman, and approved the producer's choices of Muhammad Ali, Al Pacino, James Caan, Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood and Dustin Hoffman. The filmmakers felt it was best to film Superman and Superman II back-to-back, and to make a negative pickup deal with Warner Bros. To show how serious he was, Alexander hired Mario Puzo (The Godfather) and paid him $600,000 to write the script.
Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, William Friedkin, Richard Lester, Peter Yates, John Guillermin, Ronald Neame and Sam Peckinpah were in negotiations to direct. Ilya wanted to hire Steven Spielberg to direct, but Alexander was skeptical, feeling it was best to "wait until [Spielberg's] big fish opens." His film, Jaws, became the highest grossing film ever, and the Salkinds offered him the job, but by that point Spielberg chose to make Close Encounters of the Third Kind instead. Guy Hamilton was hired, but left before filming due to legal issues. After seeing The Omen, the producers offered the job to Donner. He was planning to direct the Omen sequel, but decided to take Superman instead. Donner was dissatisfied with the campy script and brought in Tom Mankiewicz to perform a rewrite to start from scratch. According to Mankiewicz, "not a word from the Puzo script was used."
Before Donner signed, the film already cast Marlon Brando as Jor-El in 1975. And his terms were insane; top billing, a salary of $3.7 million and 11.75% of the box office gross profits (totaling $19 million), and his scenes had to be filmed in 12 days. He also refused to memorize his dialogue, so cue cards were compiled across the set. Hackman was cast as Lex Luthor days later, getting a $2 million salary. The filmmakers made it a priority to shoot all of Brando's and Hackman's footage "because they would be committed to other films immediately."
The first plan was for a famous star to play Superman, although Robert Redford, Burt Reynolds, Sylvester Stallone and Paul Newman all declined. When Donner signed, he decided to get an unknown actor. Reeve was suggested, but Donner and the producers felt he was too young and skinny. When other actors weren't convincing, they decided to give a screen test to Reeve. They wanted him to wear a muscle suit, but Reeve instead decided to take a strict physical exercise regime headed by David Prowse. After gaining enough weight, he was cast. Compared to Brando and Hackman, Reeve was paid just $250,000 for Superman and its sequel.
Filming began in March 1977, and it lasted 19 months because they were filming two films. The budget was $55 million ($303 million adjusted), which made it the most expensive film by that point. Warner Bros. only planned to distribute the film in North America, but was so impressed by the Krypton sequence, that they decided to distribute it worldwide. It was supposed to last eight months, but there were conflicts on set.
Donner had tensions with the Salkinds and producer Pierre Spengler concerning the escalating production budget and the shooting schedule. Richard Lester, who worked with the Salkinds on The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers, was then brought in as a temporary co-producer to mediate the relationship between Donner and the Salkinds, who by now were refusing to talk to each other. On his relationship with Spengler, Donner remarked, "At one time if I'd seen him, I would have killed him." Due to this, they decided to stop filming back-to-back with the sequel, and Donner was assigned to finish the first film. By that point, 75% was already shot by Donner.
The film opened with $7.4 million in its first weekend, despite playing at just 508 theaters, breaking a record for Warner Bros. As it expanded, it earned $10.3 million in its third weekend, which was the biggest weekend in history. Through the December 22-28 week, it earned a colossal $18.5 million, a figure that no film achieved in just 7 days. It eventually closed its domestic run with $134 million. And WB was right in believing in its worldwide prospects, as the film earned a huge $300 million, becoming their highest grossing film.
The film also received critical acclaim, and it has been named as one of the best films of the 1970s. It won a Special Oscar for its Visual Effects. The film was deemed a cultural landmark for comic books, and it has been proclaimed by many as perhaps the most influential comic book film ever. For the world finally believed that, indeed, a man could fly.
With this, Superman was finally an icon on the big screen. While Donner filmed 75% of Superman II, he was controversially fired before resuming his duties. There would be more Superman films in subsequent years (including one next year), but none have captured the cultural zeitgeist that this one achieved.
  • Budget: $55,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $134,478,449. ($646.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $300,478,449.

Inside Moves (1980)

"It'll make you feel good, and that ain't bad."
His sixth film. Based on the novel by Todd Walton, it stars John Savage, David Morse, Diana Scarwid, and Amy Wright. It follows a man who became crippled after a failed suicide attempt, and he turns to drink, favoring a local dive bar frequented by the handicapped. There, he befriends the bartender, an ex-basketball player saving up for corrective surgery in hopes of returning to the court, and meets a kind young lady who aids him with his physical and mental rehabilitation.
Donner states that he agreed to direct the film only to take his mind off being fired and replaced from Superman II. He referred to the film as "the smallest film I could do that was just very near and dear to me, at that point, and I felt this is going to take my mind totally off that."
It received mixed reviews, and made just $1.2 million at the box office.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $1,200,000. ($4.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $1,200,000.

The Toy (1982)

"When Jackie Gleason told his son he could have any present he wanted, he picked the most outrageous gift of all... Richard Pryor."
His seventh film. The film stars Richard Pryor, Jackie Gleason and Scott Schwartz, and follows a janitor at a department store. The owner's son is told that he may have anything in the toy department. He chooses the janitor, who the owner pays to spend a week with the boy.
The film was panned by critics, and was named as one of the worst films of the year. But with $47 million at the box office, it was still a success.
  • Budget: $17,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $47,118,057. ($153 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $47,118,057.

The Goonies (1985)

"Join the adventure."
His eighth film. The film stars Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, Ke Huy Quan, John Matuszak, Anne Ramsey, Robert Davi, Joe Pantoliano and Mary Ellen Trainor. In the film, a group of kids who live in the "Goon Docks" neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, attempt to save their homes from foreclosure and, in doing so, they discover an old treasure map that takes them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate. During the adventure, they are pursued by a family of criminals who want the treasure for themselves.
Donner noted both the difficulties and pleasures of working with so many child actors. He praised them for their energy and excitement, but also said that they were also unruly when brought together. While Donner is credited as the director, some have referred to producer Steven Spielberg as co-director.
The film received a great response, and after a slate of weak films, Donner bounced back with a much needed box office hit. The film was very influential, and it helped launch the careers of many of its stars.
  • Budget: $19,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $63,711,145. ($185.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $124,311,145.

Ladyhawke (1985)

"A magical adventure."
His ninth film. The film stars Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer. The story is about a young thief who becomes unwillingly involved with a warrior and his lady who are hunted by the Bishop of Aquila. As he learns about the couple's past and secret, he chooses to help them overcome the Bishop's forces, and to lift an infernal curse.
It received mixed reviews, and it failed to recoup its $20 million budget.
  • Budget: $20,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $18,432,000. ($53.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $18,432,000.

Lethal Weapon (1987)

"Two cops. Glover carries a weapon. Gibson is one. He's the only L.A. cop registed as a..."
His tenth film. It stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Tom Atkins, Darlene Love, and Mitchell Ryan. The film follows a pair of mismatched LAPD detectives — Martin Riggs, a former Green Beret who has become suicidal following the death of his wife, and veteran officer and family man Roger Murtaugh — who work together as partners.
Recent UCLA graduate Shane Black wrote the screenplay in mid-1985. Black stated that his intention was to do an "urban western" inspired by Dirty Harry where a violent character "reviled for what he did, what he is capable of, the things he believed in" is eventually recruited for being the one that could solve the problem. His first draft was quite different from the final film; it was darker in tone and it included massive action scale sequences. The ending of the script contained a chase scene with helicopters and a trailer truck full of cocaine exploding over Hollywood Hills with cocaine snowing over the Hollywood sign.
The script was rejected by some studios, but Warner Bros. took an interest. Producer Joel Silver was brought in and worked with Black to further develop the script. Donner also brought in writer Jeffrey Boam to do some uncredited re-writes on Black's script after he found parts of it to be too dark. Donner got Gibson involved, while someone else suggested Danny Glover. After a successful screen test, the film was greenlit.
The film was a huge hit, earning $120 million worldwide and continued launching the careers of Gibson and Glover, even if they already had a few recognizable titles by that point. It also received very positive reviews, and was another prime example of the buddy cop genre. Another Donner W.
  • Budget: $15,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $65,207,127. ($179.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $120,207,127.

Scrooged (1988)

"The spirits will move you in odd and hysterical ways."
His 11th film. Based on the novella A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, it stars Bill Murray, Karen Allen, John Forsythe, John Glover, Bobcat Goldthwait, Carol Kane, Robert Mitchum, Michael J. Pollard, and Alfre Woodard. The film is a modern retelling that follows Frank Cross, a cynical and selfish television executive who is visited by a succession of ghosts on Christmas Eve intent on helping him regain his Christmas spirit.
After Ghostbusters, Murray only took a brief appearance in Little Shop of Horrors and chose to take a break. When he did feel a desire to return to acting, he said the "scripts were just not that good", and he returned to the this project as he found the idea of making a funny Scrooge appealing. Murray was paid $6 million for his role. He helped the writers, Mitch Glazer and Michael O'Donoghue, in rewriting.
Murray struggled with a scene where he reveals his redemption live on TV. Wanting a central acting moment, however, Murray gave an emotional and intense performance, deviating from his marked positions and improvising his speech. Glazer and O'Donoghue thought that the actor was suffering a mental breakdown. After he was finished, the crew applauded Murray, but O'Donoghue remarked "What was that? The Jim Jones hour?" Donner turned and punched O'Donoghue in the arm, leaving him bruised for a week.
Despite the commitment, however, there was drama behind the scenes. Murray said that while he was enjoying the experience of the script and having fun as "the meanest person in the world", he found the production "sloppy" and has expressed unhappiness with the final cut. For his part, O'Donoghue later said that Donner did not understand comedy, omitting the script's subtler elements for louder and faster moments. He estimated that only 40% of his and Glazer's original script made it into the final film and the surviving content was "twisted". Murray was also not content with Donner, "Scrooged could have been a really, really great movie. The script was so good... He kept telling me to do things louder, louder, louder. I think he was deaf." Donner, meanwhile, has a much more positive memory of Murray, calling him "superbly creative but occasionally difficult - as difficult as any actor."
The film received polarizing reactions, particularly for the tone. But as it was Murray's follow-up to Ghostbusters, it made $100 million worldwide, making it a box office success. In subsequent years, it has become a Christmas classic.
  • Budget: $32,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $60,328,558. ($159.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $100,328,558.

Lethal Weapon 2 (1989)

"The magic is back."
His 12th film. The second installment in the Lethal Weapon franchise, it stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Joss Ackland, Derrick O'Connor and Patsy Kensit. In the film, Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh protect an irritating federal witness, Leo Getz, while taking on a gang of South African drug dealers hiding behind diplomatic immunity.
After the first film's success, Joel Silver asked Shane Black to write a sequel. Although he was struggling with personal issues, Black still managed to write the first draft along with his friend, novelist Warren Murphy. Although many people thought that their script was brilliant, it was rejected by Silver, Donner and the studio for being too dark and bloody, and because in the ending of the script Riggs dies, while they wanted to keep him alive in case of further sequels. They also wanted the second film to focus more on comedy, while Black's draft focused more on courage and heroics, like Riggs willing to die to protect Murtaugh and his family, due to his love for them.
When his script was rejected, Black felt that he had failed the producers. Black refused to re-write the script and quit from the project after working for six months on it. Black later said how the problem with the second film was that they did too much comedy, and how he dislikes the third and fourth films because of the way Riggs's character was changed. Donner got Jeffrey Boam back to rewrite, and one of the biggest changes was expanding Leo Getz's character.
The film received very great reviews, and saw a big increase from the original, earning $227 million worldwide.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $147,253,986. ($372.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $227,853,986.

Radio Flyer (1992)

"Powered by imagination."
His 13th film. The film stars Lorraine Bracco, John Heard, Elijah Wood, Joseph Mazzello, Adam Baldwin, and Ben Johnson and is narrated by Tom Hanks. Two young boys try to transform their toy into an airplane after their stepfather turns abusive. They wish to escape the physical abuse and fly away to safety.
The film received negative reviews, and it barely got 10% of its budget. Luckily for Donner, he had another film for that year.
  • Budget: $35,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $4,651,977. ($10.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $4,651,977.

Lethal Weapon 3 (1992)

"The magic is back again."
His 14th film. The third installment in the Lethal Weapon franchise, it stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Rene Russo, and Stuart Wilson. In the film, Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh pursue Jack Travis, a former LAPD lieutenant turned ruthless arms dealer, during the six days prior to Murtaugh's retirement. Riggs and Murtaugh are joined by Leo Getz as well as internal affairs Sergeant Lorna Cole.
Jeffrey Boam's first two drafts of the script were different from the final film. The character of Lorna for example was not a woman in original drafts, but the original character still had the same personality and was just as lethal and crazy as Riggs, making him his match. Riggs also had an affair with Roger's daughter Rianne, and a few parts in the final film where Roger suspects that Riggs and Rianne are interested in each other are only parts left from the original drafts. Donner demanded some big changes on the script which included changing the original character of Lorna into a woman and turning her into Riggs's girlfriend. He also re-worked the script to be less story-oriented and not focus on the main villains but instead on the relationship between Riggs and Murtaugh. He also toned down action scenes from the script and brought back Leo Getz into the story. All of his scenes were written in afterwards.
The film received mixed reviews and was considered as weaker than the previous films. But it still earned $320 million worldwide, becoming the highest grossing film in the franchise and Donner's highest grossing film (although Superman still has that title adjusted for inflation).
  • Budget: $35,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $144,731,527. ($323.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $321,731,527.

Maverick (1994)

"In their hands, a deck of cards was the only thing more dangerous than a gun."
His 15th film. Based on the 1957–1962 television series, it stars Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and James Garner (who starred in the original series). The film follows Bret Maverick, a card player and con artist who collects money in order to enter a high-stakes poker game. He is joined in his adventure by Annabelle Bransford, another con artist, and Marshal Zane Cooper, a lawman.
The film received positive reviews, and was another great success at the box office, earning $183 million worldwide.
  • Budget: $75,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $101,631,272. ($215 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $183,031,272.

Assassins (1995)

"In the shadows of life, in the business of death, one man found a reason to live..."
His 16th film. The film stars Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas, and Julianne Moore. Professional hit-man Robert Rath wants to fulfill a few more contracts before retiring but unscrupulous ambitious newcomer hit-man Miguel Bain keeps killing Rath's targets.
The film was panned by critics, and was a box office flop.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $30,303,072. ($62.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $83,306,268.

Conspiracy Theory (1997)

"Jerry Fletcher sees conspiracies everywhere... one has turned out to be true. Now his enemies want him dead. And she's the only one he can trust."
His 17th film. It stars Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts and Patrick Stewart, and centers on an eccentric taxi driver who believes many world events are triggered by government conspiracies, and the Justice Department attorney who becomes involved in his life.
The film received mixed reviews, and despite earning $137 million worldwide, it wasn't a box office success due to its high budget.
  • Budget: $80,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $75,982,834. ($148.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $136,982,834.

Lethal Weapon 4 (1998)

"The gang's all here."
His 18th film. The fourth and final installment in the Lethal Weapon franchise, it stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Rene Russo, Chris Rock, and Jet Li. It follows Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh as they investigate a Chinese immigrant smuggling ring. A crime boss named Benny Chan leads them to the Chinatown.
Wanting another film in the franchise, Warner Bros. and Joel Silver tried buying a new spec script titled Simon Says in hopes of rewriting it into a script for Lethal Weapon 4. Written by Jonathan Hensleigh, the story was about a police detective and a shop owner forced to find and stop bombs planted all over a city as part of a mad bomber's revenge plot against the detective. 20th Century Fox then bought the script, and decided to use it as the basis for a new Die Hard film, Die Hard with a Vengeance. Donner was committed to another film, but Gibson was not interested.
The film had a very difficult pre-production, as the script was still being re-written and rejected. Silver ultimately brought in TV writer Channing Gibson to work on the script, after he was impressed by Gibson's rewrite of a spec script titled Sandblast. Gibson took the gig thinking it would be a more relaxed writing job than anything he did for TV. However, much like the previous two sequels, the script kept getting changed and rewritten over and over again. Gibson would end up doing more work and revisions on it than on all of his TV work put together. Production even started with only half of the script.
Something you might have noticed, is that the budget was far larger than the previous films. While the previous two films cost $30-$35 million, Lethal Weapon 4 had a budget of... $150 million ($288 million adjusted). Which means that at that point, it was the most expensive R-rated film ever and the third most expensive film, just behind Titanic and Waterworld. Why? Because the delays kept coming... but Warner Bros. was desperate in greenlighting the film. Realizing they had no big tentpole releases scheduled for summer 1998, Warner Bros. finally greenlit the film in late 1997. So they opened all their wallets and started shooting in January 1998, despite having one third of the film not written yet, including the ending. Due to issues during filming, including the script changes, production ended around mid May, less than two months before its scheduled July release. The ending was not written until it was finally time to film it. Editors had to work very quickly to have the film ready, which is why the trailers feature some deleted and alternate scenes which are not in the film. So the film was greenlit, filmed and released in theaters in the span of just 7 months.
The film received mixed reviews. And if Warner Bros. was confident that spending $150 million to rush a film was worth it, they were in for a rude awakening. The film earned just $285 million worldwide, which meant that the film was a box office flop.
It was the last film in the franchise. Although a gang in a pub in Philadelphia kept the spirit alive by making three sequels, one of which had Danny DeVito as the bad guy.
  • Budget: $150,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $130,444,603. ($250.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $285,444,603.

Timeline (2003)

"You're history."
His 19th film. Based on the novel by Michael Crichton, it stars Paul Walker, Frances O'Connor, Gerard Butler, Billy Connolly, David Thewlis, and Anna Friel. It follows a team of present-day archaeology and history students who are sent back in time to medieval France to rescue their professor from the middle of a battle.
The film was a critical and commercial failure.
  • Budget: $80,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,481,943. ($33.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $43,935,763.

16 Blocks (2006)

"1 Witness... 118 Minutes."
His 20th and final film. It stars Bruce Willis, Mos Def, and David Morse. The film unfolds in the real time narration method, and follows Jack, who is assigned the task of escorting Eddie, a witness, from police custody to the courthouse. However, when they are attacked on the way, Jack learns that the entire NYPD wants Eddie dead.
The film received mixed reviews, and it marked his fifth bomb in a row. It was his final film before his death in 2021.
  • Budget: $52,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $36,895,141. ($57.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $65,664,721.

The Verdict

Despite the inconsistency of his filmography, it's hard to deny Donner as a very influential figure of cinema.
He was an expert in handling many genres; you'd expect the director of The Goonies to make 4 Lethal Weapon films? Or that the guy who made The Omen would make Scrooged? Sure, his last films indicated that he might have lost it, but you can't blame him for trying. The fact that he was willing to make Lethal Weapon 5 before his death show he was very committed. He was never too old for this shit.
And of course, there's Superman. The film that changed comic book films as we know them. It wasn't the first, but it was perhaps the most influential. There's an argument that either Batman, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, The Avengers, Deadpool or Joker are more influential, but those films wouldn't exist today if it wasn't for Donner. It's why Kevin Feige shows the film to all the cast and crew before filming any MCU film. If the film was put in the careless hands of a mediocre director, it would've been forgotten almost immediately. And the genre would be very different today. So it's a testament to the strength of the film of how much it could change the landscape of what was possible. He and Christopher Reeve really offered something fresh and exciting. They truly made the world believe a man could fly.
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Ang Lee. A very important filmmaker.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... Roland Emmerich. Is it Joever for him?
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
June 3-9 Ang Lee What happened to Lee?
June 10-16 Zack Snyder RIP Inbox.
June 17-23 Tony Scott Action films have not been the same ever since his death.
June 24-30 Roland Emmerich The King of disaster films.
Who should be next after Emmerich? That's up to you. But there's a catch.
For this week, you'll choose from four options, all picked by me. So we won't accept any other suggestions this week. I'll give you four directors, and the director with the most upvotes will get his own post. And here they are:
  • Joe Dante: Like Donner, a very influential figure of the 70s and 80s.
  • Renny Harlin: One of the most popular directors with the biggest amount of flops. How does he do it?
  • John McTiernan: An important action filmmaker... who literally went to jail.
  • Rob Reiner: Another actor who had an incredible run as a director, before falling with North.
So which one should be next? That's up to you.

2024.06.01 01:35 hawke_255 Chu Li Ji 樗里疾, the uncle of king sho and qin's greatest general BEFORE the 6 Great Generals

The manga mentions king sho and the 6gg a lot, but there was someone just a great before them. This man is chu li ji, who weakened the 6 kingdoms prior to hakuki/bai qi and arguably this guy's accomplishments helped set the stage for king sho and king sei's conquests. He defeated one of the warring states era's greatest generals kuang zhang, saved yan from destruction from qi, defeated a coalition (possibly single handily), laid the seeds/foundation of the coalition against qi by gakuki, and he also has some interesting facts and rumors related to him. Chances are, 6gg shiba saku/simacuo and hakuki/baiqi may have been this guy's subordinates some time in their lives. Qin people even had a syaing according to the shiji "力气大要算任鄙,智谋多要算樗里"
Chu li Ji or ying ji 赢疾, is the half-brother to king huiwen of qin (king sho's father), making him one of the uncles of king sho. He served 3 kings, and served as a great general, chancellor, lord, and posthumously named 先师 "xian shi"
His military accomplishments: (most sources I found this info from are from the shiji and zhan guo ce)
330 bc: Chu li ji was made "you gen" 右更 and captured the wei city of qu wo 曲沃 and the surrounding territory, annexing it into qin. He then worked together with the famous Gong SunYan to annex the hexi territory
318 bc: By this time Gong Sun Yan defected back to wei and organized a 5-state coalition against qin including wei, han, zhao, chu, and yan. At the battle of kankoku pass/hanggu guan, Chu li Ji defeated the 5-state coalition, forcing the coalition to retreat.
317 bc: Chu li ji led his forces out to kankoku pass to pursue their victory and caught the wei, han, and zhao forces at xiu yu, and defeated zhao prince ke and han prince huan (forcing them to flee), captured enemy general shen chai, killing a total of 82k enemy troops.
314 bc: Chu li ji led qin forces to attack the wei territory of jiao, forcing their surrender. He then defeated Gong Sun Yan (who after leading a failed coalition, defected to han) and the han forces he led at anmen 岸门, killing 10k han soldiers. (one source claims his kill count was 220k). During this year, qi's famous great general kuang zhang 匡章 captured the yan capital (withdrew eventually), but yan was beaten by qi badly.
313 bc: Chu li ji attacked zhao and captured the city of 蔺城 lin, and captured the zhao great general zhao zhuang (also known as zhao bao or zhuang bao). This battle along with the battle of anmen the previous year are 2 of the 5 major battles that severely weakened the "3 jins" (wei, zhao, and han).
312 bc: A coalition of qin, wei, and han vs. a coalition of chu, qi, and song. Qi and song attack wei. After being scammed by the qin chancellor zhang yi, king huai of chu attacks and surrounds the han city of yong. Chu li Ji leads one of the qin armies sent to aid han and defeats the chu great general jing cui 景翠. He then meets up with fellow qin great general wei zhang and defeats the other chu great general qu gai 屈丐 at the battle of dan yang, killing 80k chu soldiers and capturing chu great general qu gai along with 70 chu officers. The qin forces then pursue their victory and defeat chu again at the battle of lan tian 蓝田, conquering 600 li of chu ground. Because of this vcitory, chu li ji is awarded the yan dao area of the shu province and is made lord of yan 严君.
312 bc cont: Following the defeat of chu, Chu li ji then led his forces and meet up with wei allies to march on yan. When crossing into song kingdom territory, the song king makes a pact with qin and pulls his forces out. Chu li Ji then defeats qi forces and their gg kuang zhang forcing them to flee. Chu li ji and han and wei allies also defeated the qi forces led by the other qi great general sheng zi 声子 who were attacking wei's city and either captured or killed him. Yan is able to reform and qi's attempts to conquer yan is foiled. The new yan king wishing revenge ultimately will be the one to appoint gakuki/yueyi and form the coalition against qi.
(basically, this year of 312 bc, chu li ji was the winnemvp of 4 battles). The reason chu li ji defeating kuang zhang is significant is because kuang zhang is one of the warring states era's top ggs who nearly conquered yan, dealt the reformed qin kingdom's one of its earliest and biggest defeats at sang qiu 桑丘, and most importantly was famous for breaching and taking control of kankoku pass when leading a coalition against qin in 298 bc (forcing qin to give up land and negotiate for peace which the qi king was foolish enough to agree to).
311 bc: King wu of qin ascends the throne (king sho's older brother), Chu Li Ji is appointed left chancellor (shoubunkun's current position). He is ordered by king wu to lead 100 war chariots on the eastern zhou capital where he was publicly welcomed by the zhou tianzi and zhou troops.
307 bc: Chu li Ji, wei ran, and empress dowager ming help King Sho/Zhaoxiang ascend the throne, Chu li Ji is honored/respected even more. Chu Li Ji is appointed chancellor (ryofui's position)
306 bc: Chu Li ji leads troops to attack the city of pu 蒲, but is convinced by 胡衍 hu yan that taking such a city will benefit wei more than qin due to its location, and was convinced to switch targets to wei's city of pi shi 皮氏. Because the city didn't surrender, chu li ji decided to withdraw.
300 bc: Chu li ji passes away and is buried in the east of zhang tai 皮氏, south of the wei river. On his deathbed, he stated that "100 years from now, a ruler will have his surround/fork his tomb". This came true as when the han dynasty rose, the emperor's palace was built right around his tomb with the changle palace built on his burial ground's east, the wei yang palace on its west and the arms barracks across from the tomb. Because of him correctly predicting something that happened a century after his death, he was posthumously named "xian shi" 先师 by the later 堪舆家/风水家 "professional geomancers". This could be han dynasty propaganda to help add some mystical predestination to help legitimize their rule, but still, if this IS true, that is insane.
Speaking of propaganda, according to the 谶记秘传, because of his prediction regarding the palace being around his tomb 100 years after his death, no emperor from then on dared touch his tomb. However, the founder of the sui dynasty yang jian decided that he wasn't going to believe such myths and decided to move chu li ji's tomb to chang an city proper. However, during the process, a stone tab was dug up from his tomb reading "杨花谢,李花开" "yang flowers wilt, li flowers bloom" (indicating the yang family's fall aka the sui dyansty, and the rise of the li family aka the tang dynasty). This scared the sui emperor yang jian that canceled his plans on the tomb and reburied the stone tab back into the tomb. This is likely tang dynasty propaganda, but still, bizarre right?

2024.05.31 22:38 Sea_Researcher2696 I have zero clue what to do.

So from my last previous post almost 3 months ago, I have made it all the way to the BI, passed everything including medical.
My background check got rejected 3 times now due to “incorrect, inconsistent, or incomplete information on place of birth” Which confuses me because I’m putting information down straight from my birth certificate and my own mother, and I’ve emailed my agency representative but everytime he emails back it’s a automated response that has zero help. They also want me to fill out the form OF 306, which I cannot do because everytime I go to log in to fill it out it says there’s “no active records on my account”
And to top it all off, I went into my very first application I submitted to TSA to see if I maybe spelled something wrong or put the wrong birth location by accident, and by doing so I accidentally applied, again, when I made it this far in the first application process.
WHAT DO I DO.
And before anyone replies telling me to email them, I have, many times, left voicemails as well, it’s been 2 weeks of me trying to resolve or fix anything and nothing.

2024.05.29 03:40 jlynnj99 Is this a scam???

Is this a scam???
Been trying to look for a place to rent in the city. Saw this on Facebook yesterday and I thought it was a pretty good price considering the location (those apartments do exist on Heseltine), so I messaged asking if we can schedule a viewing. She basically ignored my question regarding a viewing but I thought maybe they would prefer to communicate over email instead of Facebook, whatever. Didn’t think much of it. Today, I get a phone call (Sask #) from a man with a heavier accent. He said he emailed me an application in relation to this place. While on the phone with him, I glanced at the application and I’m not a fan that they want a photo of our ID’s and to see pay stubs before we’ve even seen the place! So I asked if we could view it first, just to make sure this is legit. He said he did viewings yesterday but “had so many people interested he couldn’t get everyone a viewing.” I asked if we could do it later this week and he said he’s back in Thunder Bay now (quick turnaround 🤔) so he can’t do more viewings. He was polite and said if I’m not comfortable sharing my information then theirs no pressure to apply.
I won’t be applying, as I’m definitely leaning more towards this not being real and I don’t want to give information to someone I’ve never met. $1320 with utilities included in that just seems to good to be true in comparison to other places I’ve checked out. Just wanted to post and get a second opinion if I’m overthinking it, or if it’s not a legit posting.

2024.05.27 13:36 Visionin_ Crashing problem after I rolled back Fallout 4 pre-update

So, I tried following the steps of this guide, I did everything and I'm pretty sure I didn't miss anything, next thing you know I launch the game and the intro doesn't show, then it cuts to the menu, where i only see black except the menu itself, not the background. Eventually, after a few seconds, I crash.

Unlicensed neighbor
I have a neighbor who runs his business out of his house. Currently 3 other known neighbors are annoyed with how he runs it.
A little information without going into too much detail.
  • He has 7-9 vehicles that he parks infront of 6 houses as well as 1-3 trailers. When asked if he can move he tell he person to go fuck themself. (some people have to park their cars down the block)
  • A neighbor called the city and found out his address doesn't have a home business license but got scared to go farther and hung up.
  • His yard and sides of his house are full of work equipment.
  • His business is year round and his employees start working and making noise at 5 am sometimes.
  • When street cleaning is announced he parks his vehicles and trailers in every possible neighbors driveway without asking.
So my questions are, with all of this information is there a way to report him? Have him follow any kind of home business rules? Or be made to remove his home business and store all of his vehicles, trailers and equipment at a work compound?

2024.05.25 15:12 Dukeofmuffin I like to buy things from GME

Sold some covered calls of GME last week and what did I do with the profits? I bought a new Xbox, all the fall out games, became a gme pro and used the left overs to buy more shares.
I don't care what's happening, what theories you have, what the board is doing etc. My strategy doesn't change. I simply continue to buy things from the company and buy shares when I can.
Current position (if you care) 3,300 shares drs in book form with 306 in a fidelity account I uses to sell covered calls during volatile moments.
Who cares about the news, the technicals, what everyone's theories are, etc etc?
Make it simple silly by buying from gme, buying shares, and direct registering them. It's really that simple

2024.05.23 12:48 Sorry_Ambassador_250 Need help with fixing ram issues.

Edit: Someone suggested me to clean my ram slots with a toothbrush and alcohol, would that be good?
I made a post about my pc with my dad yeasterday about getting a new pc, until i get a new one i would like to fix an issue with my current one, i used to have 8gb 1333MHz, and i still do have it installed(4 x 2GB sticks), but ever since i sent it to a service for a power button issue (problems turning on my pc, they also changed my PSU and reinstalled windows), my ram is only 4gb, i tried changing combinations to see if its a problem with my RAM, but nothing changed, the weird thing is if i put 1 sticks it works, when i put 2, one works, when i put 4 sticks, two work. I placed 1 stick on all 4 ram slots and it always works. I sent it to another service and they said its a ram issue. I am honestly really confussed because all of my ram sticks seem to work when alone, same goes for the ram slots.

2024.05.23 06:35 stlatos Dark of Moon: Sky Myths & the Etymology of Odysseus

https://www.academia.edu/119846820
  1. nature myths and the nature of myths

Some myths deal with stars, the sun, moon, etc. All should know and recognize this, yet many obvious examples have been left unanalyzed in this way. A backlash against interpreting myths as representing nature, seasons, heavenly bodies, etc., comes from the history of comparative mythology. Though all certain cases of the Sun(-God) in myths were recognized as solar by Max Müller (Whalen 2023), and a period of heavy nature analysis began. Unfortunately, even with this obvious even 200 years ago, his tendency to theorize that this meant that all words for these figures came from words for ‘sun’ makes it difficult for other scholars to pick out the true aspects among the false. Just because some were first told of the Sun, not all stories remain the same over time. The same tale can be told of many figures, some popular incidents included in stories that originally were much shorter and about someone else entirely. He also extended his solar theory to every myth that might have been about the Sun, with no evidence, leading to contradictions, and etymologized most names from ‘sun’, ‘day’, etc. (known sound changes were fewer then, so many make no sense).

His followers also extended his ideas and made them their own. This often led to each scholar focusing only on his own specialty, and interpreting all myths in that framework. Thus, one might see all gods as the storm, all fights as thunderstorms, etc. This often led to incompatible analyses of the same myths by each scholar of this school, multiplying without end. This could not go on, and the once-popular field became completely overturned. Afterwards, even saying that a an obvious analog of the sun was a Sun-God was seen as distasteful. From Bilić :

>
It was once popular to interpret Gilgameš… as a solar hero or a sun god and to analyse his exploits in terms of (especially annual) solar movement… This interpretation reflects the influence of the once omnipresent solar-myth (or nature-myth in a wider sense) paradigm that dominated the 19th-c. discussions on myth… Despite the heavily ideologised dismissal of the solanature-myth paradigm… as well as the inadequacies of its rival and conqueror, the anthropological-fertility paradigm, the eccentricities of the former frequently did not require an especially meticulous criticism in order to be refuted. The interpretations of Gilgameš’s exploits in terms of solar movement withered away in the light of these developments and are today deservedly not taken very seriously… Keeping in mind a clear understanding ofthis problem, it does not automatically follow that the explicit solar referencesin Gilgameš’s itinerary should be discarded together with this antiquated interpretative strategy.
>

There should be no need to apologize or require special pleading to see the sun as the sun. A dismissal of nature myths is still influencing study much too heavily. For example, Walker saw the Divine Twins as created to fulfill societal roles, ignoring such facts as their driving the chariots of the Sun and Moon, which led to Norelius’ description :

>
The author’s central thesis is that the twin gods originated in the early phase of Proto-Indo-European horse domestication, before the invention of the spoked wheel and the warchariot… its primary use appears to have been in catle herding. Keeping watch over herds was probably a low-status activity; in many Indo-European societies (ancient Greece, Iran, India) it was undertaken by young men who had yet to enter a setled married life and were not full members of society. The riding twin gods, envisaged as youths, were divine counterparts of these cattle herders, and their position in the pantheon was correspondingly low. Their mythical roles as helpers, healers, and rescuers from peril are also ascribed to their servile nature… The possibility of their being the morning and evening stars, which would account for their connection to twilight, has been discussed by Donald Ward, as well as by Thomas Oberlies in his volumes on the religion of the Ṛgveda (not cited), but receives very litlec onsideration in this book; nor does Douglas Frame’s suggestion that they represent the twilights. ‘Nature mythology’ is briefy discussed and dismissed as a 19th-century fantasy. Of course, gods may represent natural phenomena while at the same time being modelled on social types; and I think this is the case with the divine twins, whose family, indeed, consists entirely of nature deities.
>

  1. traces of the sun

Indeed, it makes no sense to remove all nature from mythology, only because it once held too high a place. Though I do not feel all IE gods can be analyzed only by their origin, often in nature, it plays a part. So too do later versions of gods, with their myths turned into folktales (or a return to form, since the origin of myth in popular tales is one theory). I want to try what Müller did for Odysseus, but as a part of a larger whole, and with better knowledge of related myths and IE sound changes. Hermes’ son Autolycus (Autólukos) was clearly a clever thief whose adventures were from the same origin as Hermes’ own. Autolycus’ grandson, Odysseus, was no less a mythical version of the hero who was both strong and clever. It would be impossible to understand any of these as only the Sun, but in any myth made of many parts, changing and mixing with others over the years, each aspect should be given attention. As an equation of Hermes and Apollo as two versions of one original god is needed if any comparative mythology for either is valid. For further solar aspects, see Bilić’s analysis :

>
The section of Odysseus’ voyage from Laestrygonia by way of Aeaea to Hades and back to Aeaea, which is often interpreted in cosmological terms, more precisely, in terms of solar movement… represents a convenient background against which the corresponding Mesopotamian material can be studied. This particular line of interpretation is firmly based on the text itself, with its repeated emphasis on explicit solar features, such as the island of sunrise, Circe’s solar ancestry, the lack or excess of sunlight (the Cimmerians and Laestrygonians, respectively), to which we may add the gates of the sun from a similar context. Moreover, the features that can be inferred as solar in character, such as the rock associated with the world of the dead and—in a similar context—the daily course of the sun, the town of “distant (probably solar) gates” (Telepylus) and the hero following the nocturnal section of the daily course of the sun upon the circumambient Ocean, can also be added to this list.
>
Indeed, it is possible to interpret the section of Odysseus’ voyage from Aeaea to Hades and back in terms of the diurnal course of the sun(-god) upon a flat earth in combination with a vertical descent to the world of the dead… The cosmological nature of Odysseus’ voyage as a whole was recognized by the Homeric exegete Crates of Mallos, as attested in both literary and cartographic sources… Crates interpreted the section of Odysseus’ voyage from Aeaea to Hades in terms… especially… the interpretative framework of the annual solar voyage.
>

The journey to the Underworld could represent the death of the sun each day, or the supposed death and renewal of the sun as an explanation of the heat and cold of the seasons. A “great year” of 19 years is used to have the solar and lunar year match; his return after 20 years could be based on this (though 10 or 20 is not an uncommon number, but see 108 below). The timing of his return is also significant, at Apollo’s festival at the dark of the moon. Both this and his return mark the start of a year. Apollo is clearly a Sun-God, if anyone is, and his favor of Odysseus can not really be explained as anything but an equation (in story terms, Apollo should hate him for his actions against Troy in the Iliad). Odysseus is the only one who can draw a bow during Apollo’s festival (bows were associated with Paris of Troy in the Iliad), and his killings are absolved by Apollo. Just as Paris used a bow with Apollo’s explicit help to kill Achilles and is a clear version of the god, the same is necessary for Odysseus (at least in this section). In more context (Frame) :

>
Odysseus returns at the dark of the moon. The festival of Apollo being celebrated when he reveals himself and regains his kingdom is thus a new-moon festival. The season is spring, and the new moon, marking the restoration of Odysseus’ kingship, also marks the beginning of a new year. In contemporary Miletus the king’s power would also have been ritually renewed at the start of the new year, in the spring…
>
Apollo’s festival in the Odyssey is widely assumed to be that for the new moon, which, with other divisions of the month, was sacred to Apollo. The identification of the new moon festival rests on the word lukabas which the disguised Odysseus twice uses of his own impending return, speaking first to Eumaeus and then to Penelope (Odyssey 14.16l–162, 19.306–307):

In this very lukabas Odysseus will come,
when one month ends and another begins.

While both meaning and etymology are obscure for the word lukabas, it is clearly connected here with the interlunium, the dark of the moon: the hidden Odysseus will reappear like the moon after its three days in hiding.
>

Another oddity is the group of suitors that Odysseus must kill. They are 108 in number, which is two 2’s and three 3’s ( 2×2×3×3×3 ). This might simply be a generic mystical number or used because it can be divided in several ways without remainder. However, it is found in other cultures and sometimes has astronomical signifance. For example, Indian division of the sky and year into 27 nakshatras, each with 4 padas. Since both groups might have retained similar PIE ideas of numerology and astronomy, I can’t immediately dismiss a possible connection. If so, it might figure into the Sun-God being lord of all sections of the sky or year.

  1. lukábās

Part of this analysis involved the Greek word lukábās. Frame said :

>
There is no doubt that Odysseus returns with the new moon. But the word used to designate the new moon is not a perspicuous term like noumēnia, “new month,” but the oracular-sounding lukabas. This word, which in Homer is accompanied by a gloss to explain it, is far from perspicuous in terms of etymology, or even meaning. To conclude this study, which by the nature of its subject has been speculative, speculation on this dark word seems not inappropriate, and the place to start is the meaning of lukabas in Homer, namely “dark of the moon.” In its few occurrences in later Greek, mostly poetic and oracular in context, lukabas means “year.” In the Odyssey lukabas could mean “year,” but this would rob the disguised Odysseus’ prophecy of its urgency: returning “this very year, at the end of one month and the beginning of another,” would mean a possible wait of up to a year for Odysseus to appear. It is generally agreed that context requires τοῦδ’ αὐτοῦ λυκάβαντος to mean “at this very new moon,” as is made clear in the line following, which is in fact a gloss.
>

I am sure that, just as ‘winter’ was often interchangeable with ‘year’ (PIE *dwi-g^himno- ‘2 winters (old)’ > L. bīmus ‘two years (old)’, *dvi-zivn > Wg. düzun-zālǝ ‘heifer in its 3rd year’, *tk^mto-g^himno- > Skt. śatá-hima- ‘100 years old’), the period ending & beginning each year became a poetic word for ‘year’. This should have no effect on the rest of Odysseus’ relations to other myth, but since G. lukábās / lukámās ‘dark of the moon’ contains luk-, as Odysseus might (*oluksew-s > G. Odusseús / Olutteus / Ōlixēs, L. Ulixēs), its origin should be firmly understood to make sure it doesn’t provide any other insights first. Both PIE *leuk- ‘light / bright’ and *-luk- / *-duk- also show alternation of l / d (G. *Poluleúkēs ‘very bright’ > Poludeúkēs ‘Pollux’, like Sanskrit Purūrávas- ‘*very hot’), so being sure of each part seems best.

Levaniouk had a similar problem with it :

>
First of all, let Zeus be my witness, the highest and best of the gods,
and then the hearth of flawless Odysseus, to which I have come:
all the things I proclaim will come true.
Odysseus will come back here within this very lukabas,
with one month waning and the next one beginning. (Odyssey 19.303–307)

Scholia explain lukabas as ‘year’, and Wilamowitz accordingly interpreted the expression τοῦδ’ αὐτοῦ λυκάβαντος to mean ‘within this year’. Suggested etymologies connect the word with light, (root *leuk- as in λύχνος, λεύσσω, Latin lux), and βαίνω (Leumann 1950:212n4, Stanford 1965:222 ad loc., Ameis and Hentze 1895 ad loc.) Koller 1973:29–33 suggested *λύκα βάντα, ‘the light having gone’. Others seek pre-Greek origins connecting the word with the name of the Attic mountain Λυκαβηττός (Ruijgh 1957:147, 1979:559–60), or suggest a Semitic connection (Szemerenyi 1974:144–57), see also Hoekstra 1992:204 (on Odyssey 14.161) and Russo 1992:91 (on Odyssey 19.306) and Chantraine 1999 s.v. The idea that lukabas is a festival of Apollo Lykeios or Lykios was put forth by van Windekens 1954:31–4. Whether this is actually the meaning of lukabas seems doubtful, but a connection with the festival of Apollo is clear in the context of the Odyssey (see Russo 1992:92 on Odyssey 19.306–7). Austin (1975:244–246) argues that the word signifies the ‘dark of the moon’, a period of a few days when the old moon has waned but the new one is not yet clearly visible. He is followed on this point by the recent commentaries (Rutherford 1992:175, Russo 1992:92, both on Odyssey 19.306–307). In Book 19, therefore, lukabas denotes “the interlunar period about to end with the new moon festival of the god” (Russo 1992.92).

Their ideas involve lukábās being original, not lukámās. Since the stem is lukábant-, dissimilation of *m-n > b-n makes more sense than the reverse (possibly after the change of *-nts > -_s, eliminating the nasal in the nom., creating variation m / b in the paradigm). This requires a division like amphi-lúkē ‘twilight’ and lukóphōs ‘twilight’. This would make it a compound :

luk- ‘light’
āmáō / amáō ‘reap / cut / mow down (in battle)’
*luk-amant- ‘dividing the light / period between moons/months’ > lukábās / lukámās

  1. Odusseús

This word supposedly has nothing to do with Odusseús, said to be from odúsasthai ‘hate’ (PIE *H3od- ‘hate / stink’). When he disguised himself as a beggar, he also gave his name as Aithōn ‘raging’ in a pun on this. However, almost all ancient attempts at etymology are wrong. This does not explain d / l (and nothing regular can). Since many mythical figures have names ending in -ōn, -aios, -eus, added to simple nouns or adj. (Aigeús, Aigaíōn, Aktaíōn, Amphíōn, Erekhtheús, *wlukWawyōn > Lukáōn), looking for *oduk- or *oluk- seems best. Men with names derived from animals in myths often could turn into them (or were forced to), like Lukáōn and lúkos ‘wolf’. Aktaíōn probably comes from *aktawyo- ‘horned’ (*H2ak^- ‘point’), for example.

The variants Odusseús / Olutteus / Ōlixēs require *d or *l > d / l and *ks or *ts > ks / tt / ss. Many words show ks vs. ts (*ksom / *tsom ‘with’ > xun- / sun-; *órnīth-s > órnīs ‘bird’, Dor. órnīx; *(s)trozd(h)o- > Li. strãzdas, Att. stroûthos ‘sparrow’, *tsouthros > xoûthros; *ksw(e)rd- > W. chwarddu ‘laugh’, Sog. sxwarð- ‘shout’, *tsw(e)rd- > G. sardázō ‘deride’; *ksw(e)izd- > Skt. kṣviḍ- ‘hum / murmur’, L. sībilus ‘whistling / hissing’, *tswizd- > G. sízō ‘hiss’; Whalen 2024c) and since *ty and *ky both merged and became ss / tt, an intermediate *ty > *tty > *tsy / *ksy makes sense. No other known word shows *ky > ks, but this fits the needed changes and old names often retain old changes seldom seem. One word that might match is G. lússa / lútta ‘rage / fury / mania / rabies’, likely < *wluk-ya ‘wolfishness’ << lúkos ‘wolf’, which might explain tradition about his name’s connection with being hated. His grandfather Autolycus gave him this name, and his own was made of ‘self’ and ‘wolf’ (possibly originally ‘man-wolf’, though also possible is ‘lone wolf’, since related *H2awtiyo- ‘away from (others) / by oneself’ also produced G. aúsios ‘idle’, Go. auþeis ‘deserted / barren’, ON auðr ‘desolate’). He supposedly had this name because he could turn into a wolf (his tricky wife also could turn into animals), and both crafty Autolycus and Odysseus seem based on Hermes (mythical figures with several names are often split into 2 due to confusion or contradictory traditions, such as Erekhtheús and Erikhthónios), so it’s unlikely their names are unrelated. It is clear that names like *wlukWawyōn > Lukáōn exist (directly associated with wolves), and other IE myths include heroes who turn into beasts or become bestial (Cú Chulainn is also named after a dog & a berserker, Bödvar Bjarki with bears (maybe related to Beowulf)). I also see Greek sound changes (some likely only in dialects) as responsible for making lússa / lútta and -luss- / lutt- appear with different variants in these words (o- vs. 0-, tt/ss vs. tt/ss/ks).

In *wlkWo-s ‘wolf’ > TB walkwe, Go. wulfs, L. lupus, G. lúkos, Alb. ulk, the G. and Alb. words supposedly show metathesis of *wl- > *lw- > *lu-. This is tradition, an attempt at keeping all change regular, but the many variants with wR and Ru in IE are NOT regular. *l > lu would not be regular on its own. However, other words show rounding of syllabic C’s between round/labial C’s without the loss of any of them (*plH1u- ‘many’ > Skt. purú-, G. polús, Arm. yolov ‘many (people)’) and Arm. & G. could change *o > u in the same environment (*morm- ‘ant’ > G. bórmāx / búrmāx / múrmāx; *wrombo- > rhómbos / rhómbos ‘spinning-wheel’, *wodo:r ‘water’ > G. húdōr, *megWno- ‘naked’ > Arm. merk, *mogWno- > *mugno- > G. gumnós). Since some dialects have all *l > ol / lo, we can’t even say if *wlkWo-s > *wlokWo-s > *wlukWo-s would be irregular or require any more sound changes than already known. Several Arm. & Greek words vary between l- and ol- (Arm. ołork -i- ‘smooth / polished’, lerk -i- ‘smooth / hairless’, *slibro- > OE slipor ‘slippery’, G. (o)librós, *sl(e)idh-(ro)- > Skt. srédhati, W. llithro, G. olisthērós ‘slippery’), so there is no reason luss- and Oluss- need to be unrelated. This is even more likely since lússa came from *wl-, and *w- optionally became o- in some IE :

Skt. vípra- ‘stirred? / inwardly excited / inspired’, Av. vifra- / ōifra- ‘shaking?, tossed in the waters?’

*windho-s > MIr find ‘a hair’, *winlo- > L. villus ‘shaggy hair / tuft of hair’
*windho-s > *winthos > *óinthos > íonthos ‘young hair’

There are several Indo-European groups of words for ‘wolf’, ‘fox’, and similar animals that often began with *wl-, but with al- in G. & Arm. (Whalen 2024a) :

*wlp-(e)Hk^o- > Li. vilpišỹs ‘wildcat’, L. vulpēs ‘fox’
*wlep-ano- > H. ulippana- ‘wolf’, *welp-an(a:)- > Alb. dhelpën ‘fox’
*lewp-eHk(^)o- > Skt. lopāśá- \ lopāka-, etc.
? > *aloHp-eHk^- > G. alṓpēx \ alōpós, Arm. ałuēs

In light of my *wl- > (o)l- in ‘wolf’, it is possible that *olṓpēx existed with dissimilation (or a similar change at an earlier time). It is hard to know for sure, but maybe *H3lewp-eHk^- > Skt. lopāśá-, *wloH3p-eHk^- > *oloxWp-eHk^- > G. alṓpēx (and if H3 = xW or another round C, dissimilation of *w-W is also possible).

These allow *wluks-ya ‘wolfishness’ to produce *wluksyew-s. Not only would this be like *wlukWawyo- ‘wolf-like’ >> *wlukWawyōn > Lukáōn, but G. Odusseús seems to be a direct match with Paeonian Lúkpeios (a king). The many names in -eus seem to come from older *-ewyos (Whalen 2024b), and *wlukWyewyos might give both if Paeonian had dissimilation of *y-y > 0-y (though a match this direct is not needed). Kings around Greece speaking languages closely related to Greek sometimes had names from legendary kings (Phrygian Midas < *med- ‘rule’, likely Bithynian Ziboítēs \ Tiboítēs \ Zeipoítēs was cognate with G. despótēs < *dems-poti- ‘master’), so a common tradition about a King named ‘wolf-like’ is not out of the question.

These words and names should not be left unexplained. Variation due to dialects is known in Greek, so the variants Odusseús / Olutteus / Ōlixēs do not require foreign origin. Many names from myths show d / l, and other IE languages in the area had the same (Ph., Anatolian optional T > l). If d / l is not regular in Anatolian or Greek, why would l / d in this name support an Anatolian origin? Seeing any oddity in a word, even one from myth, is not a license to reject its origin in the language it is known from in favor of yet more obscure origins.
