2024.06.05 12:40 Deckuras Another one (Medical background)

Iā€™ll try to keep this short since I know you guys get these a lot.
Iā€™m a US citizen, 33 years old. No criminal record.
I have a medical degree; a TCCC certificate, as well as a combat medic certificate (3 week course). I also plan on getting a paramedic certificate and working civilian side in Spain before going back to Ukraine.
Ukraine was my first active warzone.
I was in Kharkiv for 2 months, and I experienced missile strikes near daily and even a drone strike. Iā€™ve also been on the receiving end of small arms fire while serving as a medic of sorts when I was younger (which I understand by no means makes me a hardened veteran who has survived 36 hours of continuous mortar and artillery fire).
Of course, I have no legitimate military experience, Iā€™ve only shot a few rifles including an Ak74 (and an m1 Garand lol) and was taught how to strip and clean one while in Ukraine. I even made some great friends and contacts, one of which is already involved in a foreign unit (I never asked which one).
I am physically fit (can run a mile under 7 minutes, aiming for under 6) and working on getting even fitter.
I have also seen plenty of trauma cases within a hospital setting as well as my fair share of recently deceased patients and people; which is to say that while Iā€™m not completely desensitized to death and violence, through experience I know I can snap myself into working without hesitation, and having lost close friends to violence before, I know I can endure without succumbing to drugs and alcohol.
All of this I can back up with paperwork and video evidence.
The reason Iā€™m posting all this is because I have two questions I wanted to ask without bothering anyone directly.
With regard to the foreign legion - are there any active medical battalions that cater exclusively to westerners/foreign legion members or is that handled only by Ukrainian medical personnel? That is to say, while I have no qualms about being a front line combat medic (however traumatizing that may be), many have expressed concern over me being better used in a supportive role rather than on the frontlines, especially given that I have no true military training or combat experience.
My other question is: Given recent changes in contracts, as well as all the horror stories about truly bad apples within the legion - what would be the best option for me in terms of joining a unit?
I have heard chosen being recommended a lot as well as GRU, and I have the option of reaching out to my friend, but the simple truth is like others say the last thing I want is to be a liability or cause the death of others due to lack of combat experience.
Working as a medic in horrible conditions does not bother me in the least, and those who are truly dedicated will endure the hardships of trench living, but having learned the barebones of small unit tactics and CQB is surely not enough and I fear any real professional unit will not want to deal with inexperienced troops no matter how desperate they may be for physicians/EMTā€™s.
Which of course leaves only the units that will take in anyone, including psychopaths and predators who view everyone, even allies as prey.
I guess what Iā€™m asking for is the same advice everyone else that comes in here asks for except catered a bit more to my specific case, as Iā€™ve also had veterans tell me that my background as a physician will intimidate people especially if I am just another soldier.
I welcome any kind of feedback, and please be as mean and as blunt as you can - I appreciate that kind of honesty above all else.
Thank you for your time.

2024.06.05 11:32 Verdia2 MSI MAG B650M Mortar WIFI on Tower 200

MSI MAG B650M Mortar WIFI on Tower 200
I'm planning to use the MSI B650M MAG Mortar WiFi motherboard with the Thermaltake Tower 200 case.
Will this motherboard fit in the case properly without modification? I've heard that the PCIe x16 slot is positioned lower compared to the B550M Mortar WiFi, so it won't fit a full-size, 3-fan GPU. Can you confirm if this setup will work?
tbh i don't really know what that means since this is gonna be my first pc build.

Anchor into Brick/Mortar
Revamping my condo deck patio. The handrail and a wood top post are getting stripped and repaintedā€¦ but in the meantime , I want to make sure I have a plan to better secure the rail.
The last guy just kept stuffing more anchors into the old hole, so whatā€™s the best way to move forward?
Fill old hole with mortar and re-drill a new anchor?
Move hand rail a bit and start in fresh area?
Better ideas?

2024.06.05 00:56 T-SquaredProductions Newbie here. A need for propelling confetti with a celebratory firework-like bang: three ideas, but which to choose?

I upgraded a New Year's display last year to use air to propel paper confetti, but it seemed very weak, partly because the tank I used couldn't hold as much pressure as I wanted.
My upgrade this year is a partial idea taken from Kipkay on Youtube, with switch-activated glow plug igniters (switches pressed by the display's New Year's Ball when it reaches the bottom) in two metal pipe mortars (2" diameter, 12" length), and some safety devices to keep the glow plugs from staying on too long.
The mortars will be pointed upwards, with ONE endcap on the bottom, per mortar, drilled and screw-tapped to accept the screw-in glow plugs.
As for the propellant, I've been planning and researching one of 3 ideas to try, but two of them are a bit risky, so I wanted to find some hobbyists who had experience in this sort of thing.
Here are my three ideas, from (what I've seen) least dangerous to most dangerous:
1. Flash paper and flash cotton: This is the other half of Kipkay's idea. His project seemed to have a good loud report when ignited, but I also saw another video demonstration from another individual that made it seem a bit weak. (Maybe it was because in the latter, the flash paper wasn't packed down or confined?)
These next two are more dangerous, and I DO want to treat them with respect, but I'm hesitant to approach them, as I don't know if they would give the "powerful theatrical confetti burst" effect and "New Year's firework bang/pop" that I want. I already read the community wiki about this, so these give me a bit of trepidation myself.
These are NOT about asking for suggestions for HOW to make flash powder. Rather, it's whether they're appropriate for my New Year's display idea.
2. KClO4 flash powder (0.5 to 1 gram): This seems to have a nice bang to it, and it may be good for propelling, but I've heard that it loses power when confined. (If used, my plan is to roll the powder in a small wrapper of toilet paper, and use masking tape to hold it to the glow plug igniter.)
3. KClO3 flash powder (0.5 to 1 gram): I know what some of you are thinking. This is the worst of them. It seems more powerful, but it's much more unstable too, and thus risky. This, I fear, may create a danger by damaging the mortars, sending metal pieces flying everywhere, and I don't want that.
What are your opinions on these?

paver brick patio - can i slope it down or do i need a step? (6in drop across 18ft)
I am replacing a messy old paver patio area with new paver bricks. i dug out the old pavers and tilled the ground to grade. i plan on doing a conventional paver base, leveling sand, paver brick construction. i put up a string level and the grade drops about 6 inches across 18 feet from the fence to my yard. Can i just slope down to the grass or do i need to make it level with a step down at the end? if so, how? do i have to pour a concrete slab at the end to support the last row of bricks and keep in the base? a row of concrete blocks? or could i level the dirt then do a stack of 2-3 bricks as the last row with some mortar to support it? looking for ideas

2024.06.04 21:27 NovaNanny New Home work... who do I call?

Hello! My partner and I are closing on a house in Eberwhite at the end of the month and just finished our inspection. We are first time home buyers and there are quite a few things that need to be done but we don't know where to start.
Can someone give us a few recommendations? I'm unsure if we should hire a general contractor or try and find specialists for the various things. There are some projects that need immediate attention and some that are down the line, which makes me think it might be better to hire a GC and start building that relationship.
Here are some more immediate things we need done:
-lintel / brick / mortar repair
-flash and trim repair (some is rotted, some is just sagging)
-seal up some holes in brick / ports into house
-finish 1937 wood floors
-repair fireplace refractory
-seal gaps between floors
-leak in one bathroom
-install / upgrade to GFCI outlets
-ground and reverse polarity of some outlets
-paint most rooms
Down the road we want to:
-add built ins
-replace metal railings with wood
-build a pantry out of a closet in an adjoining room (basically swap which side the door is on)
-build a three season sunroom
None of these are big projects in themselves and I've found a lot of the companies only do big projects. I like the idea of getting someone we can send our inspection report to / walk through out house with and make a repair plan... but I'm not sure if that's how it works. Any help is appreciated!

2024.06.04 20:04 Hard-Mineral-94 Some good news from Pulte

Some good news from Pulte
Referring to the Chapter 11 bankruptcy case of Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY), the terms "workout" and "split" would imply specific strategies and actions the company might be considering or implementing as part of its restructuring efforts.
Workout in BBBY Chapter 11
A workout for Bed Bath & Beyond could involve the company negotiating directly with its creditors to restructure its debt outside of the formal court proceedings. This might include:
  1. Debt Modification: Renegotiating the terms of existing debt, such as extending repayment periods, reducing interest rates, or partially forgiving some of the debt.
  2. Secured Credit: Obtaining new financing or modifying existing secured credit agreements to provide the company with the liquidity it needs to continue operations during the restructuring period.
  3. Supplier Agreements: Negotiating new terms with suppliers to ensure continued supply of goods, potentially involving longer payment terms or reduced prices.
  4. Lease Modifications: Working with landlords to reduce rental payments or modify lease terms for its retail locations, helping to reduce operational costs.
The aim of such a workout would be to reach a consensus with key stakeholders to avoid the more costly and lengthy formal bankruptcy process, although it might still result in filing for Chapter 11 if agreements cannot be reached.
Split in BBBY Chapter 11
A split in the context of Bed Bath & Beyond's Chapter 11 could involve several possible actions:
  1. IMPORTANT Debt-for-Equity Swap: Converting some of the company's debt into equity in the reorganized company. This would reduce the overall debt burden and give creditors an ownership stake, aligning their interests with the future success of the company.
  2. Bifurcation of Claims: For secured creditors, splitting their claims into secured and unsecured portions based on the value of the collateral backing the loans. The secured portion would have priority in repayment, while the unsecured portion would be treated differently under the reorganization plan.
  3. Asset Sale: Selling off non-core or underperforming assets to generate cash, which can be used to pay down debt. This might involve closing certain stores, selling real estate, or divesting certain business units.
  4. Operational Splits: Reorganizing the company's operations into separate entities or divisions. For example, Bed Bath & Beyond might split its e-commerce operations from its brick-and-mortar stores, allowing each to operate more efficiently and potentially attract different types of investors.
Practical Application to BBBY
  1. Debt Restructuring: Bed Bath & Beyond could work on a workout plan with its lenders to restructure its substantial debt, which would involve renegotiating loan terms to provide the company with breathing room to stabilize its operations.
  2. Asset Sales: The company might sell off certain non-core assets, such as owned real estate, to raise cash that can be used to pay down debt and fund operations. This could be part of a split strategy.
  3. Business Unit Divestitures: BBBY could consider selling off certain business units, like its Buy Buy Baby stores or other subsidiaries, which could be more valuable on their own or to potential buyers.
  4. Equity Conversion: Engaging in a debt-for-equity swap with some of its creditors to reduce overall debt levels and turn creditors into stakeholders, who then have a vested interest in the company's successful turnaround.
TADR:
In summary, for Bed Bath & Beyond's Chapter 11 case, a WORKOUT would involve negotiating with creditors and other stakeholders to restructure debt and operations outside of court, while a SPLIT could involve dividing assets and operations to streamline the business and make it more viable post-bankruptcy. TENDIES for Shareholders.

2024.06.04 17:43 zzaannsebar Need help finding wedding venues in/near the cities that let you BYO liquor

My fiancƩ and I are planning on getting married in October of 2025. My dad manages a liquor store and has been setting aside bottles here and there for the wedding so finding a place that we can provide the liquor but hire a bartender service is very important. We're looking at places that can fit at least 150 people and are located no more than like 45-60 minutes outside of the cities.
We are not religious and won't be getting married in a church and we've already discussed that we don't really want to get married in a park.
We toured Hope Glen farm and it was 100% perfect expect for the price. $12k just for the venue before food, photographer, music, and all the other things that cost money is a little out of our budget unfortunately. I've also been told that the Saint Paul College Club lets you BYO alcohol and I've contacted them but not toured the venue yet.
Y'all know any other places that let you bring your own liquor and can just hire a bartending service? When I google things, I mostly get a lot of park results and that's not what we're really interested in.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Edit: You guys are amazing! Thank you all so much for the suggestions and info so far! I'm at work right now so I can't respond to everyone individually but I'm going to keep a running list here of the places suggested so far and I'll check them out after work :)
Saint Paul College Club, Semple Mansion, Neu Neu, Plymouth Creek Center, B&L Barn Wedding in Ham Lake, Glass House, Pique Event Space (link), The Blaisdell, Outpost in Chaska, Paikka in St. Paul, Germanic American Institute on Summit, Brick x Mortar, The Blaisdell Mansion, Camrose Hill Flower Farm, Day Block
Bonus advice to reach out to equalpartscocktailco.com who do tons of weddings around the cities and allow you to bring your own liquor and would know all the spots!

Understanding the Jewellery Industry in the UK

  • Current Market Trends
The jewellery industry in the UK is experiencing steady growth, with projections indicating a market revenue of US$4.77 billion by 2024. This growth is supported by an annual growth rate of 3.58% from 2024 to 2028. Quick & Easy Guide: How to start business in the UK as a foreigner in 2024?

  • Potential Opportunities
The UK jewellery market offers numerous opportunities for business expansion, especially for those interested in aligning with current consumer preferences and technological advancements. The shift towards lightweight jewellery and the increased empowerment of women who are purchasing jewellery for themselves present significant market opportunities.
Business persons looking to expand into the UK can capitalize on the trend towards sustainable and ethically sourced materials. Brands like Monica Vinader and Mejuri have successfully tapped into this market by focusing on recycled precious metals and sustainably sourced gemstones, setting a benchmark for success in the industry.
Moreover, embracing digital transformation and online sales channels can provide a competitive edge. The UK's rich history of jewellery craftsmanship combined with modern marketing strategies, such as e-commerce and digital marketing, opens up pathways for reaching a broader audience and scaling the business effectively.
The jewellery industry in the UK not only offers a lucrative market due to its size and growth potential but also due to the diverse and evolving consumer preferences that demand continuous innovation and adaptation.
Deciding on the Type of Jewellery Business
When embarking on the journey to start a jewellery business in the UK, one of the pivotal decisions involves selecting the type of jewellery business to establish. This choice will significantly influence the materials, production processes, pricing strategies, and the target market. Here, business persons can explore three primary categories: E-commerce Boutique, Brick-and-Mortar Store, and Handmade and Custom Jewellery.
  • E-commerce Boutique
An E-commerce Boutique presents a modern approach to jewellery selling, allowing business owners to reach a global audience. Platforms like Catbird, AUrate, and Mejuri exemplify successful online boutiques that offer a wide array of designs and styles. This model is particularly advantageous for those looking to expand their business to the UK, providing flexibility in operations and minimal initial investment compared to physical stores. Business owners can leverage e-commerce platforms that are cost-effective and customizable, such as nopCommerce, to create a distinctive online presence that showcases their products effectively.
  • Brick-and-Mortar Store
For entrepreneurs who prefer direct customer interaction and can invest more initially, opening a Brick-and-Mortar Jewellery Store is a viable option. This traditional model offers a personal shopping experience where customers can physically examine and try on jewellery. Renowned examples include Tiffany & Co. and Pandora. Location is crucial; thorough research into the demographic and economic characteristics of different areas can help in selecting an optimal location. Additionally, the store's interior design, display, and lighting play significant roles in attracting and retaining customers.
  • Handmade and Custom Jewellery
Handmade and Custom Jewellery businesses cater to niche markets that value uniqueness and craftsmanship. This type of business is ideal for artisans who wish to express their creativity through bespoke pieces or limited series collections. Platforms like Etsy and Not on the high street are excellent for handmade jewellery artisans to reach wider markets without significant overheads. Additionally, custom jewellery services such as those offered by Vrai and Brilliant Earth allow entrepreneurs to provide personalized experiences, crafting unique pieces that meet specific customer desires.
Each type of jewellery business has its distinct advantages and caters to different customer segments. Entrepreneurs should consider their strengths, market research, and the specific needs of their target audience in the UK to make an informed decision. This strategic choice not only defines the brand's identity but also sets the foundation for its marketing and operational strategies.
Creating a Business Plan
Ā· Market Research
To successfully start a jewellery business in the UK, one must first thoroughly understand the market dynamics. This involves analyzing consumer spending on accessories, including jewellery, and identifying the key players who dominate the market with innovative products and extensive distribution networks. Business persons should gather data on consumer preferences for different types of jewellery such as rings, necklaces, and bracelets, and understand the price variations based on the type of metal or gems used. Additionally, they should consider the impact of socio-economic factors such as the increase in purchasing for occasions and the empowerment of women who are increasingly buying jewellery for themselves.
Ā· Business Model and Structure
Choosing the right business model is crucial for the success of a jewellery venture in the UK. Entrepreneurs must decide whether to operate an e-commerce platform, open a brick-and-mortar store, or focus on handmade and custom jewellery. Each model has its own set of advantages and requires different resources and investment levels. For instance, an e-commerce boutique might require less initial capital and can reach a global audience, whereas a physical store offers direct customer interaction and can leverage location to attract customers. Additionally, understanding the competition and defining a unique selling proposition (USP) that sets the business apart from others is essential.
Ā· Financial Planning
Creating a detailed financial plan is vital for managing the economic aspects of a jewellery business. This plan should include a startup cost analysis, which covers expenses such as leasing retail space, purchasing initial inventory, and marketing costs. Entrepreneurs should also prepare a cash flow statement to track the movement of money in and out of the business, and a profit and loss statement to monitor profitability over time. It's important to project sales, calculate profit margins, and determine the break-even point to ensure the business can be financially sustainable. Additionally, considering the potential risks and preparing for unforeseen expenses with a contingency fund are important steps in financial planning.
By carefully conducting market research, choosing an appropriate business model, and developing a robust financial plan, business persons looking to expand their jewellery business in the UK can set a strong foundation for success.
Quick & Easy Guide: How to start business in the UK as a foreigner in 2024?

Legal Requirements and Regulations
Ā· Business Registration
To legally establish a jewellery business in the UK, entrepreneurs must first register their company with the appropriate authorities. This process involves selecting a unique business name and registering it to ensure it's legally recognized. Business persons must navigate the website of HM Customs and Revenue (HMRC) to complete their self-assessment within three months of commencing trade and submit a tax return assessment at the year's end. It's essential to identify the business structure as it influences corporate taxes and national insurance contributions, which are also payable to HMRC.
Ā· Licences and Permits
Depending on the nature and location of the jewellery business, various licenses and permits may be required. For instance, if the business involves selling high-end jewellery and offering customers a glass of champagne while they browse, a licence to serve alcohol may be necessary. Additionally, selling jewellery in the UK mandates compliance with hallmarking requirements under the Hallmarking Act of 1973, ensuring that metals meet a minimum standard of purity through inspection and stamping. Business owners should consult their local council to understand specific requirements, which may include a general business licence or specific permits for using certain premises.
Ā· Health and Safety Compliance
Jewellery businesses must adhere to stringent health and safety regulations to protect both employees and customers. This includes compliance with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, which mandates employers to ensure a safe working environment. For those operating workshops, specific measures such as adequate ventilation, use of personal protective equipment, and regular risk assessments are crucial. Furthermore, businesses must comply with REACH regulations, which govern the use of hazardous substances like nickel, cadmium, and lead in products. Ensuring these measures not only promotes safety but also aligns with legal obligations and protects the business from potential legal issues.

Quick & Easy Guide: How to start business in the UK as a foreigner in 2024?
Setting Up Your Workshop or Store
Essential Tools and Equipment
1. Selecting a Workbench: A robust workbench is crucial for various jewellery-making tasks such as soldering, hammering, and setting. Business persons can opt for high-quality Emir workbenches known for their durability or consider cost-effective alternatives like custom-made benches from local carpenters. An ideal workbench should be approximately 90cm high to ensure ergonomic working conditions.
2. Tools and Equipment: Essential tools include various pliers (chain-nose, flat-nose, round-nose), wire cutters, and a jeweler's saw for intricate work. Additionally, a bench peg and anvil are necessary for supporting and shaping the jewellery pieces. These can be attached to most workbenches and are relatively inexpensive.
3. Soldering and Heat Equipment: A reliable soldering block is indispensable for tasks involving heat as it provides a fire-proof surface. For those using torches, selecting a safe and efficient model like a butane torch or an oxygen-propane torch is advised. Ensure you have appropriate fire safety measures like a fire blanket or extinguisher nearby.
4. Lighting and Magnification: Proper lighting is essential to avoid strain and ensure precision in jewellery making. Options include adjustable LED lamps or desk lamps with magnification features. This helps in maintaining visibility especially when working with small or detailed pieces.
Workspace Organisation and Safety
1. Storage Solutions: Utilize wall space effectively by installing storage units like the Ikea Fintorp system, which offers metal buckets ideal for storing soldering tools and other small equipment. This not only keeps the workbench clear but also minimizes fire hazards.
2. Security Measures: To protect valuable tools and materials, investing in good quality locks, a CCTV system, and possibly an alarm system is essential. For those with workshops in separate buildings, these security enhancements are crucial to deter theft.
3. Safety Protocols: Regular risk assessments are necessary to identify potential hazards in the workshop. This includes ensuring all tools and chemicals are stored safely away from domestic spaces and out of reach of children or pets. Adequate ventilation is a must to avoid inhaling harmful fumes, and wearing safety goggles and protective tape on fingers can prevent injuries.
  1. Fire Safety: Always have a clear fire plan and keep your working area free of flammable materials. Ensure that your soldering area is set up away from combustible materials and that family members are aware of the hazardous zones.
By meticulously organizing the workshop and selecting the right tools and safety measures, business persons can create a functional and secure environment that enhances productivity and creativity in their jewellery making ventures.

Quick & Easy Guide: How to start business in the UK as a foreigner in 2024?

Branding Your Jewellery Business
Defining Your Brand Identity
In the competitive world of jewellery, establishing a strong and consistent brand identity is crucial for success. Business persons aiming to expand their business to the UK should start by defining what their brand represents. This involves identifying core brand values, crafting a mission statement, and developing a unique selling proposition (USP) that distinguishes the brand from others. These elements should guide all branding decisions, influencing everything from the company name to the visual identity. It's essential for entrepreneurs to consider what they want their customers to associate with their brandā€”be it integrity, creativity, or sustainability.
A style guide is vital in ensuring consistency across all channels. It should detail the brand's visual identity, including color palette, typography, logo, and imagery style. This guide helps maintain uniformity in how the brand presents itself, from the website to social media, ensuring that all elements convey the desired emotions and messages.
Developing a Unique Brand Story
Creating a compelling brand story is fundamental in connecting deeply with customers. This narrative should be more than just about selling jewellery; it should weave the values and uniqueness of the brand into a story that resonates on an emotional level with the audience. Business persons should consider using storytelling to enhance the appeal of their jewellery, transforming each piece from a mere accessory into a symbol of larger narratives such as empowerment, heritage, or personal milestones.
To effectively craft and share this story, business persons should:
1. Understand their customersā€™ values and concerns to align the brand story with customer interests.
2. Utilize the language and perceptions customers have about the jewellery in brand communications.
3. Consider incorporating elements of the brand's origin or creative inspirations that make the jewellery unique.
4. Use multimedia, such as photos, videos, and engaging narratives, across various platforms like social media, the brand's website, and email marketing to reach a wider audience.
5. Ensure the packaging and branding materials reflect the brand story, turning every unboxing into an experience that reinforces the brand identity and values.
By focusing on these strategies, entrepreneurs can create a jewellery brand that not only stands out in the UK market but also creates lasting connections with their customers.
Marketing Strategies
Using Social Media
Social media platforms offer a dynamic environment for jewellery businesses to connect with their target audience and showcase their products. Business persons should identify their ideal customer profiles and tailor their social media strategies accordingly. Platforms like Instagram and Facebook are particularly effective for visual products like jewellery. By posting high-quality images and engaging content regularly, businesses can attract and maintain the interest of potential customers. Additionally, leveraging hashtags can significantly increase the visibility of posts, allowing businesses to reach a broader audience.
Collaborations and Influencer Marketing
Influencer marketing has proven to be a powerful tool in the jewellery industry, especially when targeting consumers in the UK. Collaborating with influencers can help brands gain credibility and access to the influencerā€™s follower base. Business persons should consider establishing long-term relationships with influencers to maximize the impact of their marketing efforts. This strategy involves not just occasional promotions but integrating influencers into the brand story, possibly even involving them in product design or selection. This deeper engagement can lead to more authentic promotions and stronger customer responses.
Participating in Markets and Shows

The shift towards lightweight jewellery and the increased empowerment of women who are purchasing jewellery for themselves present significant market opportunities.

Collaborating with influencers can help brands gain credibility and access to the influencerā€™s follower base. transparency and anti-corruption reforms: NGOs' oversight over public procurement to become easier

Last week Pashinyan cabinet greenlighted an amendment to the public procurement process to allow journalists and NGOs to more easily observe the execution of the procurement process. Details in May 23 news.
FINANCE MINISTRY: The law was amended 2 years ago to grant this ability but not many NGOs and journalists have been using it because the process was cumbersome and required them to submit information, receive authorization, and contact the finance ministry. This reform will allow NGOs to submit paperwork and register with the ministry only once.
NGO INFORMED CITIZENS: This change allows us, without a warning, to go and observe the construction project in progress. If the construction is financed with public funds, with the exception of secret objects (e.g. army), it's possible for us to visit the site and even verify the width of the metal being used to ensure it meets the standards. In reality, this goes beyond improving transparency because it will serve as a preventative measure to discourage dishonest conduct by companies. //
FINANCE MINISTRY: We do not always have the capacity to properly oversee every construction project in its entirety, especially the large ones. Often the state's main role in these contracts is to be an intermediary between the construction company and the public. With this reform, we are allowing the public to join the supervision process. We expect this change to expose many problems and there is no culture of hiding the problems; the government regularly discusses them at the highest levels. //
NGO INFORMED CITIZENS: For example, students' parents can register an NGO and audit the quality of food served to their children in school.
REPORTER: Could this change discourage the participation of companies in public tenders?
NGO INFORMED CITIZENS: It won't discourage honest companies.
FINANCE MINISTRY: If a company is nervous about the increased public oversight, that means they have serious problems. This is a positive change for honest companies. Imagine you hire a construction worker to remodel your home and he doesn't want you to see what he is doing in your home. Would you trust that worker? The journalists and NGOs can get involved in an oversight process with up to 10 members each.

the share of sole-source contracts has decreased during public procurement processes: government

REPORTER: The procurement volumes and the competition are both on the rise. Last year the state agencies (without counting state companies) signed contracts worth ֏307B. That's +11B vs 2022 and +66B vs 2021.
OFFICIAL: Of that ֏307B, ֏123B was spent on healthcare services and other natural monopolies where there is only one option. If we deduct those, we signed contracts worth ֏184B.
֏11B were signed under the condition of absence of competition and ֏11B under emergency.
As of May 1, the share of sole-source purchases:
2023: 12%
2024: 6%
National Center of Public Policy Research: If we count the state companies as well, the volume of contracts reaches ֏439B. Most of the Infrastructure Ministry contracts were competitive. The same cannot be said about the Healthcare Ministry and Interior Ministry; a significant share of those were non-competitive.
BUSINESSMAN (medical field): I'd say up to 90% of the time it's highly competitive and there are tens of companies competing. But then the hospital next to it, which uses almost the same products, announces a similar tender and only 2 are bidding. This is because there are loopholes that allow them to legally write the characteristics of the product in a way to allow only a specific company to win the bid.
OFFICIAL: Of the 125,000 submissions, only 109 were challenged. That is a very low number. Moreover, as for the complaints that the product description is sometimes intentionally meant to prevent the participation of other companies, we know this to be true, and we plan to address this with the ongoing legal reforms and the introduction of a new electronic procurement platform. The new platform will have standardized characteristics and the complaint that sometimes the characteristics are discriminatory will be addressed by the requirement for submitters to use a sample characteristic. The system will be automated and it will become impossible to deviate from the standards.

Armenia's Public Services Regulatory Commission chief urges utility operators to trade at least part of their shares in local stock exchange

CHIEF: We held discussions with the Justice Ministry. The only issue in this case is related to Gazprom Armenia. It is necessary to understand whether this proposal would contradict the 2013 Armenian-Russian agreement on natural gas supplies, as it was ratified by both parliaments and is equal to a law by its status. //
The Armenian government has been subsidizing companies since 2023 for listing their shares on the local stock exchange to create an opportunity for them to raise financing from banks, shares and bonds.
PASHINYAN (February): We should apply favorable regimes for public companies that trade their shares on stock markets. The tax regimes will be less favorable for companies that do not go public. [The context was transparency and oversight in utility companies and telecom operators.]

northern floods have dealt damage to Armenia's mining industry

MINISTER: Most of the mining concentrates are exported via rail, and if the consequences of the natural disaster are not remedied quickly, the mining industry will have massive problems. This is why we spare no effort to restore traffic ASAP with the partners from the South Caucasus Railway. //
Teghut's copper-molybdenum mine and combine have suspended their operations because the pumping station is damaged by the flood and so is the road leading to the site. Efforts are underway to fix both problems, said the company.

disaster zone and Holy Struggle: Sunday's weekly review by H1's Petros Ghazaryan and Tigran Hakobyan

GHAZARYAN: I spent the last two days in the disaster zone. The situation is truly serious there, and we - in Yerevan - do not adequately see the seriousness of the damage. The first floors of the buildings in the Alaverdi region do not exist anymore. I don't see how they could become livable anymore, in addition to the seismic issue of entire buildings. [2.5 kilometers of] the railway has collapsed - one of the main forms of cargo transportation in Armenia. Almost all the bridges in the region have collapsed. Small businesses are hit hard.
HAKOBYAN: ... the orchards and household items.
GHAZARYAN: A 70-year-old man showed me water and said that's where his orchard once was; his retirement is gone. I think the damages are worth a few hundred million dollars. Parts of the M6 highway were simply washed away. From Dlijan to the border with Georgia in Bagratashen. When they say 1959 was the last time we experienced this, in reality, the water levels were high but there was no damage like this.
HAKOBYAN: Climate change is a contributing factor.
GHAZARYAN: We've seen floods in Russia lately but they aren't mountainous, their rivers gradually increase and engulf everything before gradually receding. In the case of mountainous rivers, they bring a massive flow at once and destroy everything before receding just as fast. What I liked in the disaster zone was the attitude of residents; they weren't disheartened, they were determined to rebuild. I visited many locations and in many of them, there was already a process of creating the inventory of lost items to receive compensation from the state. From refrigerators and TVs to pianos and furniture. The same about businesses.
But we have a parallel reality in Armenia - the Holy Struggle.
HAKOBYAN: We had a disastrous earthquake in 1988 during the early stages of the Karabakh [reunification] Movement. On the following day, the Karabakh Movement Committee declared the suspension of its activities against the government and urged its followers and everyone to support the restoration of the disaster zone. The same happened during the 4-day and 44-day wars when all political parties set aside their differences to address the most pressing issues.
This Holy Struggle is an exception. They don't speak about the disaster zone and haven't provided support. Bagrat Galstanyan mentioned once that he met Gagik Tsarukyan to ask him to support the disaster zone, but I think Tsarukyan would have done that even without having a tea party with Galstanyan.
I feel Spanish shame for the conduct of our journalists. When I worked as a young journalist in 1988, I spent a month in the disaster zone to cover the situation. Today, none of our so-called "patriotic media" has a presence in the disaster zone. We have TV channels where 100%, not even 99% but 100%, of the videos are propaganda coverage of the Holy Struggle.
Russians have an excellent saying that whatever you name your movement, that's what it turns into. The idea of holy struggle has historically been used by Christians and Muslims to fight against external enemies. I can't think of any other instances of a holy war being waged within Armenia against the segment of your own population that disagrees with you and your values. They similarly call this a National Liberation Movement, which again implies that a segment of the Armenian population is enemies because historically that term has been used against foreign adversaries. And what do you normally do to your enemy? You destroy them. The culmination of this rhetoric was the clash between Galstanyan and police in front of the foreign ministry building on Friday. This is headed to bloodshed and the state must do everything possible to prevent it.
GHAZARYAN: This movement is being aided 24/7 by media outlets created by Kocharyan and Serj. They don't go to the disaster zone or elsewhere, they are tasked with the holy mission of covering the holy struggle all day long.
HAKOBYAN: It's a PR campaign.
GHAZARYAN: Yes. They create beautiful montage clips of Galstanyan and his words, with music. They are serving Galstanyan as his media outlets. Are Kocharyan and Serj using their massive media apparatus, this pyramid of falsifications, for that purpose without an underlying reason?
Second. The Russian Sputnik media agency, whose official policy is to promote the interests of the Russian state, is engaged in a similar PR campaign for Galstanyan.
Russia's Channel One (ORT) does not sing without the approval of the Kremlin. They present a 20,000 rally as 100,000. Russian political experts describe this movement as their only hope and announce that if it fails, they will have no choice but to find a common language with Pashinyan and accept him. Some Russian figures complain about sending large sums to Armenian opposition forces who have failed to create a functioning movement.
The movement leaders don't talk a lot about foreign policy but they have announced a need to "restore" relations with Russia. What does "restoring" mean? It sounds benign but in order to restore the relations,
(1) Armenia must agree to allow Russian forces to stand on a Zangezur Corridor for Azerbaijan. That's what Russia demands.
(2) Armenia must kick out the EU border observers and replace them with Belarusian, Russian, or CIS observers. The same Belarus that congratulated Aliyev for capturing Karabakh with their joint efforts. Bring the Belarusian forces to Armenia.
(3) Cancel Armenia's weapons and army reform contracts with France.
(4) Do not diversify Armenia's economy. Do not implement the April 5 agreements and the massive aid from the US and EU.
(5) The institute of democratic elections is finally functioning in Armenia, so there is a need to "appoint" a governor of Armenian Gubernia to restore relations with Russia.
HAKOBYAN: Galstanyan doesn't understand anything about foreign policy and introduces a very dangerous thesis because of that. For example, he criticized the Armenian government for not responding to Aliyev's claims about Khojalu "genocide". In reality, the Armenian government has adopted the correct approach of denying the claims and dismissing and not aiding the false agenda pushed by the Aliyev regime. The case of Khojalu was closed but Galstanyan wants to revive it.
During the protests, Galstanyan also disclosed his skills for dealing with Armenia's centuries-old enemies. Aliyev, ÕÕ„Õ¬Õøք Õ“Õ¶Õ” behave. He thinks he can swing his finger at Azerbaijan and resolve Armenia's issues.
GHAZARYAN: He is tapping into the basic emotions of the Armenian population.
HAKOBYAN: But people need to understand that there can always be a government worse than a bad one. Everyone who has died since 1999 is a victim of a war that could have been avoided in 1997-98. The number of deaths must not increase because of the actions of one person. Galstanyan is prepared to sacrifice thousands of Armenians with his arrogancy.
GHAZARYAN: But there is a limit beyond which holding a rational discussion is impossible. When a person implies that the Lori-Tavush floods could have been casued by the government to disrupt the protests, it's impossible to hold a rational conversation, it's shameful.
HAKOBYAN: When they told him that several police officers were wounded during the Friday clashes, he suggested that the officers might have harmed themselves. The Friday incidnet was a watershed moment for me. This person is a danger to Armenia's statehood.
GHAZARYAN: He organized rallies without a result. He announced an impeachment against Pashinyan, which doesn't appear to have worked out since Ishkhan Zakaryan hasn't joined. He announced mass strikes and road closures across Armenia, but nothing worked out. Now, in order to prevent the protest from dying down, they have to cause provocations. He went in front of the foreign ministry and announced that he had received information that Turkey plans to send elite forces to Armenia to arrest him; he needed to discuss that with FM Mirzoyan. Unless you are totally blinded by your hatred towards Pahsinyan, you understand how absurd that is. //
Galstanyan described Petros Ghazaryan as a scoundrel "who has served every administration."

Children's Day was celebrated in Armenia on June 1, not without drama šŸæ

On May 31, protest co-leader Bagrat Galstanyan announced plans to hold a protest rally in Gyumri. On June 1, a concert in Gyumri dedicated to children was rescheduled and held an hour sooner, presumably before Galstanyan's caravan of cars reached the concert area. Galstanyan, who claimed they were visiting the concert "just to enjoy it", criticized the deputy education minister for rescheduling it, calling him "illiterate" and threatening his fate: "Õ€Õ”Õ¬Õæ ÕÆÕ„Ö€Ö‡Õ”Ö‰"
The deputy minister said the concert was held an hour sooner because of "scorching sunlight" and that children were already suffering from the heat because of hourslong rehearsal and preparatory work, and that rain was predicated 30 minutes into the original concert schedule. The deputy minister criticized Galstanyan for "politicizing" the children's event and for allegedly not allowing the church-affiliated group to perform.
DEPUTY MINISTER: We offered 3 groups to perform at 1 pm instead of 2 pm and they agreed. We made the same offer to the Tavush group [affiliated with the Church] as well. They connected me with their producer, who categorically rejected it. I met the producer and asked again but received a rejection the second time; they said they were waiting for a delegation from Yerevan. Since The children from Tavush were scheduled to give a short performance at the beginning of the show, they were unfortunately excluded from the concert. //
Despite Galstanyan's announcement that they didn't intend to politicize or disrupt the Gyumri concert, the church-affiliated musical group was reportedly seen chanting Galstanyan's protest slogans after his arrival.
The protest organizers held their rally in Gyumri as planned. Co-organizer ARF MP Garnik Danielyan urged the followers "not to back down" and "to go until the end".

the final jihad is near, my friends

Bagrat Galstanyan will hold the next massive rally in Republic Square on June 9. The previous ones attracted 130,000 and 100,000 people, according to Galstanyan and Russian media outlets.
On Sunday evening, while listing the actions for Monday, Galstanyan said they would march towards the investigative committee building and demand answers about the detention of protesters, and if they don't receive the answers, Galstanyan said "we will be free to act."
The detained protesters were released without charges on Monday after being held for 72 hours after the Friday clashes with police in front of the foreign ministry building.

Pashinyan administration will treat the Armenian Apostolic Church as a political party because of its politicization, says Pashinyan's Chief of Staff

HARUTYUNYAN: In 2018, PM Pashinyan offered to hold discussions between the Church and the Government to improve the Church's transparency in the areas of customs and contributions. Unfortunately, this dialogue did not take place because of the Church leadership. I won't rule out that it could become a topic of discussion again but today, when the Church leadership takes control of political processes, the ruling party and the government have to use political tools to engage with that organization [Church], and the response to Church is the same as to any other political group or political party engaged in a political process.

court verdict: Serj-era deputy police chief Levon Yeranosyan is found guilty and sentenced to 4 years for misusing flashbang grenades against Pashinyan-led protesters in 2018

Yeranosyan's use of Zarya grenades caused injuries among 60 protesters and police officers, including now Parliament President Alen Simonyan and ruling QP MP Armen Mkrtchyan.
Yeranosyan won't have to serve the prison term because he qualifies for Pashinyan's mass amnesty. This is because the judge sentenced him under charges that entail 4 years and not the 8 years that the prosecutors sought. Prosecutors will appeal to get a stricter verdict.

ex-PM Aram Sargsyan says the West is cautious and urged Armenia not to rush with the exit from Russia-led organizations

REPORTER: Russia has been critical of the Tavush delimitation process. In the past, they claimed the maps were in Moscow and they were ready to provide advisory assistance to parties.
SARGSYAN: Russia maintains its influence around the world by keeping the conflicts active and selling weapons to parties. The West, on the other hand, wants peace and open borders so there can be trade and investments; the West benefits from investments and raises its influence by promoting democracy.
REPORTER: Yerevan is talking about CSTO's "treason" at the highest levels today, and how at least 2 of the CSTO members took part in the preparatory phase of the 2020 war [to help Azerbaijan]. Have you ever advised Pashinyan to withdraw from CSTO?
SARGSYAN: I have, starting in November 2020, after the end of the war. The CSTO has been a topic during every meeting. Pashinyan always presented various arguments, sometimes objective ones, on why not to exit it, but here is the thing: Armenia has partners [West] that provide help during difficult times. These partners' [West's] conduct regarding the withdrawal from CSTO and EAEU, in terms of timeframes... they see it necessary in the long-term plan. During certain phases, there were cautious approaches, to be cautious and not provoke Russia. The thing is, no matter how much they [West] say don't do it [don't provoke Russia by withdrawing too early], you must be the one to do it; I think it will be welcomed [by the West]. Those who have always helped you, to say "no" to them must have serious justification, so Armenia must consult with Western partners regarding regional developments and bilateral processes, which is what's being done today, and if there is a need to say "no" for certain things, it must be strongly substantiated. I think Armenia must say "no" [to the West's cautious approach] and leave the CSTO. I'm confident that the U.S. and Macron won't get upset from that; that will be our own decision. I believe the risks are greater if Armenia remains part of CSTO and EAEU.

what is the connection between the Lemkin Institute and ARF?

The Lemkin Institute recently made comments regarding the internal political processes in Armenia and observes have noticed similarities with ARF's language and agenda. The Lemkin Institute apparently did not see a need to respond to Pashinyan's April 24 statement, and only several weeks later, after the ARF-ed anti-Pashinyan protests began, the Institute released a statement accusing Pashinyan of "victim blaming" in his April 24 statement, a charge dismissed by the ruling party MPs as politically-motivated.
Armenian-American political analyst Nerses Kopalyan credited Lemkin Institute for the genocide-related work but accused it of political bias and being influenced by ARF to meddle in Armenia's internal affairs. The Lemkin Institute's director's husband is reportedly an ARF figure.

Mayor Tigran Avinyan discussed sex trafficking during the Monday session

Yerevan Zoo's Bunka the elephant needs to have sex so the city has been discussing various options to organize his dating life.
On Monday a city official reported that animal rights activists have suggested flying Bunka to Cambodia for some action, or enlarging the enclosure and bringing a female to Yerevan. The city has settled for the second option.
The enlargement process began last year but not a single company submitted a bid. The second procurement attempt will launch next week and there appears to be an interested party. The city hopes to launch the construction this year.
Mayor Avinyan instructed city officials to keep the topic of Bunka the elephant at the center of attention.

the Government and the ruling party discussed a strategy to improve demographic numbers

RULING MP: What is being done to improve the demographics, increase the population, reduce the boy-to-girl birth ratio, or maybe even invite and assimilate foreigners to address the gap with the help of immigration?
LABOR & SOCIAL MINISTER: We've been developing a demographics strategy for the last 2 years. It was disrupted twice: in 2022 because of the Ukraine war, and in 2023 because of the flow of forcibly displaced people from Nagorno-Karabakh. We took a short break to analyze the new data and create various models.
The strategy was developed after comprehensive discussions. As an adviser, we chose the Wittgenstein Centre in Vienna, one of the best in the world. At least 2 of the 5 best international experts in this field participated in the process of developing this strategy. The Charles University of Prague ran the models.
During one of the discussions, 3 directions were presented for the improvement of demographics. The birth rates will continue to decline globally in developed and developing countries. These days the term "strategy of demography" is being replaced with "population strategy" because the issue isn't just with birth rate.
So there were 3 directions for growth:
(1) The states must use their potential to encourage people to decide to have more children. This can happen by balancing the population, and through various methods, decided by each country.
(2) Migration. This is inevitable in any country and it must be controlled. We need to understand what types of migrants we want and how to integrate them as Armenian citizens.
(3) The population is aging in rich and poor countries. Armenia must have programs for active aging so people can continue to create value as they age, to maintain their role in the economy. For example, we recently amended the labor code to remove a barrier for senior workers.
But we added another factor during those discussions:
(4) Early mortality. We added this to ensure our strategy is as comprehensive as possible.
We have meticulously discussed and prepared 170 different programs that will be adopted by August.
For example, since today's topic is migration, one of the issues is the language barrier. We've studied the European practice. If they expect to organize the reception of the migrant workforce from a specific country, they have a language institution in that country. This can be done with Cervantes Institution, Goethe Institut, etc. Future migrants study the language and culture of those countries. That program is also on the agenda.
Another topic is the gender disbalance at birth. The 2022 ratio was better than the 2023, in part because in 2021-2022 there was a widespread public awareness campaign. We should return to that practice.
The comprehensive Demographics Strategy will require one more session before it's submitted for approval. We recently discussed the financial component during a Government meeting, which will approve it by July.

2024.06.04 00:44 ScuffedBalata A message for those paralyzed by fear of the future/politics/humanity/etc

Someone asked a question about this recently and I want to reproduce my comment here because I think it's worth discussion.
I feel so suffocated by fear these last couple of weeks.
Get offline. Seriously. This is the problem. Touch grass, build a shed, go for a hike, plant a garden, go to a rally, speak with like-minded people and focus on the positives and the goals.
I feel like some younger people feel like they're uniquely "put upon" by a dark and brooding future full of doubts and shadows, so much that they're saying things like:
I think it's immoral to bring a child into this world.
In light of that claim, let's put the past few generations in context.
My father, in 1962, in his 2nd grade classroom, watched videos on what to do when (not if) the USSR nuked the USA. They taught 7 year olds in mid-sized American towns how to identify the flash of a nuclear detonation in their home town. They taught them to "duck and cover" under their small desks.
They sent home fliers to parents to "have an evacuation plan" and a plan for communicating with their kids (long before cell phones) when the downtown of their city was a flaming wreckage of nuclear fallout.
More than 6 million people built underground shelters and stocked them with a years supply of food. A number of countries (notably Nordics like Finland and Norway) mandated fallout shelters in ALL buildings constructed during the 1960s and 1970s. Finland still maintains shelter for 85% of its civilians in the event of a massive fallout event. Ukraine built its subways more than 100 meters deep in places to act as shelters for a nuclear exchange.
His grandfather (my great-grandfather born in 1898) fought in "The war to end all wars". He nearly died of trench foot after lying in a puddle of his own piss mixed with blood, wearing a second-rate gas mask while Germans tried to gas him to death with chlorine and mustard gas and lobbed mortars at him for a month straight.
He lost both his siblings to Spanish Flu (which made Covid seem like a joke).
He came home and had kids and he and his wife and kids all lived in a dirt-floor barn for a few years while he saved up money to get something better. While his kids were still young came the great depression and the dust bowl, when entire cities were evacuated and there was mass famine and people lost their net worth in weeks.
Then in the same decade, his daughter died of a common infection. Then all three of his sons (triplets) were drafted at age 19 to again be sent overseas, in a different war. An existential war to prevent the takeover of the world by a lunatic despot and a reich that said 75% of people were "subhuman". They were fed into the meat grinder. Only two survived, including my grandfather, who wouldn't talk about what happened until his last days, when he admitted to having killed almost 50 people during the war.
Before that, my great-great-great grandfather lost all 4 of his siblings to smallpox in the 1860 or 1870s. His parents had died when he was 10 of an unknown illness (possibly one of the Typhoid outbreaks in the era).
He boarded a boat alone and with a change of clothes and a shovel at age 16 (seriously that was his one possession) hoping to find something different than disease and famine and corrupt governments who only served the wealthy. He had spent every penny from selling every single worldly possession to simply cross the ocean. He got work in a stable with horses and the bulk of his pay was the right to sleep in one of the horse stalls with a little dry hay for a bed. He put together just enough money to be able to eat until he had learned the skills as an ironsmith helping to make horse shoes (which skills he turned later in life to working on early automobiles as a mechanic). He lived alone in a horse barn from age 16-18 and rented a bedroom from a family who's child had just died (hence the free bedroom) after that.
I want to just emphasize that your "suffocating fear" is... primarily about media consumption. The world is always dangerous and uncertain. The future is always murky and doubtful.
And we persevere. And we have kids. We champion a cause or two, then we go home and we grab a drink and toast to those who were lost and we continue.
And that's how humanity always is and has always been.
If the height of your fear for humanity is maybe a 2.5 degree warming will have a serious impact on geopolitics.... or.... maybe my daughter can't have an abortion as conveniently or safely as I would prefer.... Just understand the context. I support your rights and her rights, but I just want to have some context for these complaints. Fight for what you believe is right, but simply deciding that you're drowning in fear to such a degree that you can't function; just have some context.
Deciding that "this is too much" is on you.

2024.06.04 00:41 Chasbo66 Ensuite Bathroom Reno

Ensuite Bathroom Reno
Decided to undertake a full bathroom renovation myself this past winter. It's a relatively small ensuite bathroom, location southern Ontario, Canada. Here are my learnings:
Now I understand 20k for a bathroom reno. The only labour we paid for was a tiling pro and we still spent over $12,000 in total. I would say the finishes/materials we chose were of decent quality. Not high end, but not all that cheap either. See below if interested in breakdown.
The job wasn't all that difficult, but it was more time-consuming than I expected. It's like a bunch of small projects. I built a bulkhead above the shower as I discovered a plumbing vent stack was cut into the room and hidden above the previous fiberglass shower stall. I had to move the plumbing (both supply and drain) for the shower. We had no bathroom fan so I installed a fan and vented it outside to soffit. Hung a new door. Installed a new light in the shower. And the worst of all, taping even this small amount of drywall - I drool with a mix of admiration and envy watching videos of taping/mudding pros.
For the shower base, I thought about removing the subfloor and installing it as curbless. However, I'm glad I didn't, as the 1 inch shower base is only about an 3/16" high after the floor tile was installed. It's a non-issue. Setting the base with PL adhesive and weighting it overnight with bags of cement resulted in a decent install. This was definitely my biggest worry of the project.
For shower glass, we wanted a single fixed panel with an opening at the back of the shower. We chose a 19" inch opening which seems plentiful, and doesn't seem to result in much water spraying out. We are happy with this setup.
There are only two things we'd likely change if starting over: We would spend more time planning what type of water setup would be best in the shower. What we installed is okay, but we probably would have installed a rain head with a standalone handheld. And I'd research tile backer. I put up cement board, but there are some new products out there that seem like good options.
I'm posting this because I found so many Reddit posts helpful as I loafed my way through the winter working on this project. Maybe this can help someone else.
Tile pro: $2,000. He supplied mortar and grout, etc.
Tiles: $1,100
Shower Base: $1,000
Vanity and Mirror: $1,900
Shower glass: $1700
Toilet and plumbing fixtures: $850
Everything else: $3700

2024.06.04 00:16 King__Carmine Sophia Attempts to Escape King Carmine's Palace

Written in chat with u/Ares378 and u/LimpPrior6366 after it got out of hand in the comments of this post
Sophia sits in the royal chamber, face pale, blood staining the edge of her lips. Slowly, carefully, she uses the blood she's been provided for sustenance, the blood of a powerful vampire king, to draw a ritual summoning circle, an ordinate business card placed in the center.
ā€œIth, you asshole. I'm calling in a favor. Get me the fuck out of here.ā€
The business card bursts into vibrant, purple flames, and out steps Ith.
"Why, hello! Did you miss me? I was on the island, you know, but I do love summonings..." he says. "You wish for freedom, then? How can I help?"
ā€œMy door is locked, so I thought I'd bring you to me." She gets weakly to her feet, knees threatening to buckle. ā€œSneak me out or use one of your damn portals. I am no man's leverage, especially not against my brother."
"Oh dear. You look... exhausted." He summons a cookie and a cup of coffee. "This is for you!"
"Anyway..." he goes on. "I wouldn't put it past Carmine to put up wards to block your travel, but we can certainly try..."
Sophia devours the cookie and coffee as he tries to open a portal to his office.
It doesn't seem to work. They notice, suddenly, the red tinge to the mortar between every stone in the chamber. It seems the cement was mixed with human blood. Clearly, someone in Carmine's lineage thought to build a cell with protective blood magic.
ā€œFucking Shite!!! Ith, please get me out of here!!!ā€
"Quiet! Nobody can know I'm here!" He pauses a moment. "Sorry. We'll just have to sneak you out. And... to start, that means getting this cell open. Any ideas?"
ā€œCant you just break through the door or something?!?ā€
"I'm... not sure. This cell is lined with blood magic. Blocked my portal. I wouldn't be surprised if it blocked fire, too... And now that I think about it, I'm trapped here with you!"
ā€œWell, make yourself comfortable I guess. Unless you can start thinking up some better ideas. Weakass knockoff demon"
"DEVIL, I'll have you know!"
Sophia looks at the remaining blood hungrily. ā€œWhat if you set the rest of this blood on fire? It's the kings blood, so it should be potent. Might even burn through the wards."
It's a well reasoned idea, but should the wards remain, it would take some time to melt the hinges of the iron door.
"Huh. Let's try it," Ith'Raal says.
Sophia watches as he ignites the metal door. "I wonder how your blood tastes..."
"..."
"Absolutely not!" he says. "... Besides, you'd burn yourself." He continues heating the metal hinges. "Listen, I assumed you'd summon me to, I don't know, wipe someone's mind, not break you out of prison!"
ā€œAnd I assumed that if you were going around offering deals, you'd be powerful enough to accept them!ā€
"I'm an enchanter, dammit!"
ā€œArent you from the violence circle? Shouldnt you have more offensive capabilities?!?ā€
"I have a knife, and I'm getting closer and closer to using it on you!"
She draws her knife. ā€œTry it, bitch. I fucking dare you.ā€
"Oh, you're on!"
Ith also draws his knife. Sophia begins circling Ith, looking for an opening.
But Ith'Raal hesitates. "Your brother would hate this, you know?"
At that, her face contorts and the point of the knife drops slightly. But just then, she begins to register a gentle voice speaking in her mind.
Are you thirsty, sweet girl?
As Ith works, continually casting, Sophia is stuck for a moment, torn between the new urges and her personal convictions.
"Listen, I'm sorry, alright? I just don't like physical spells!" Ith'Raal says.
Sophia lowers her knife and approaches. "No, I'm sorry." And in a flash she swipes, drawing shallowest of cuts on Ith's arm."
"What are you, a vampire!?"
Sophia licks the blood off the edge of the knife, burning her lips in the process.
ā€œThere," she says. "Now if your caught in here, you have an excuse. I tried to drink your blood or some fucked up shit. The king will probably be able to tell I got some of it. A decent alibi at least."
"... Smart."
"And," she goes on, "I dont even know at this pointā€¦ I just really want some more blood... Also your blood tastes fucking awful."
"I'd advise against drinking hellfire, yes."
"Duly noted." Sophia changes the subject. "Why do you hate physical spells so much?"
"I have a brand to maintain! If I use physical spells, I'm competing with John! And there's no way I'm winning that fight."
ā€œThat sounds dumb."
"I know it's dumb, but it's a pride thing, okay?!"
The voice returns in Sophia's head.
Haha. Poor thing. That devil's blood will not satisfy. You've been treated to the blood of the king. But your liege understands. And forgives. If you are good while the little devil man is taken away, you will be rewarded.
ā€œListen," she says. "I'm sorry, I'm an ass. Thank you for trying to help me. If you see my brotherā€¦ tell him to fuck off or something."
"Will do!"
Finally the iron door has begun to wobble, and Ith'Raal kicks it down. Knights are waiting there in the hall, prepared to take Ith away and ensure Sophia stays.
"...People!" Ith'Raal says. "There we go! I can finally do what I'm good at!"
He casts Psychic Scream while Sophia lunges for one with her knife and finds herself tearing out the man's throat with her teeth. The blood doesn't satisfy her strange thirst. But the guards are stunned for a moment.
"Ith, can you portal now?" she manages.
"Should be able to!"
The portal he opens is somewhat unstable, possibly from the proximity to the cell. But it will do.
Sophia quickly pushes Ith'Raal through. But once more, the voice returns.
Are you sure, Sophia? Don't you need just a little more king's blood? You'll be in hell and not at your strongest. I know you're thirsty.
She hesitates but only for a moment and dives through.
Ith'Raal is already talking. "...Welcome to my office, where I'm much more useful! Make yourself at home! Coffee's complementary!"
She steps out the portal, shaking.
ā€œOh, Ith. Thank goodness. I fucking owe you one. You got me away from that creep-ā€œ
The portal behind her reacts violently, surging forth with a pulsing blood orange hue. Pulling her back with nary a scream.
Ith is left alone, in his suddenly quiet and empty office. "Well! I tried! I have a lot of damage control to do now!"
~
Later, Ith'Raal seeks an audience with the king.
"Your highness... I do apologize for that 'escape' attempt plan. I understood it would be unsuccessful, which is why I was willing to play along. To understand you don't have freedom is a lesser despair than achieving a brief moment of freedom, only for it to be ripped from your grasp. That, in addition to building a sense of 'camaraderie' with her, is why I attempted the escape. I hope you do understand--I'm on your side, your majesty..."
"Indeed, my inquisitor." King Carmine's eyes are wary, but he offers a blood stained smile. "You've done... well."
Ith'Raal continues. "And yes... I know I should have cleared it with you beforehand, but... if we spend our lives waiting on other's approval, the 'right thing' would never be done. I saw the opportunity and I seized it. I cannot be faulted for that, can I? I digress. I'll be more communicative in the future. You have my word."
"And what is the 'right thing' do you think? It seems, of late, people can never agree."
"That's the age-old question, isn't it? Making sacrifices for someone you care about has to qualify, right? And... isn't that what we're doing?"
"That's what I'm doing, Ith'Raal. That's what I've always done."

2024.06.03 23:56 Distinct_Heron8740 Where should I retarget for Brick and Morta stores?

Hey there,
I am advertising for a Brick & Mortar store, located in Melbourne Australia.
My cold campaigns are targeting Melbourne only.
When it comes to my retargeting campaigns however, I'm not sure where I should be targeting.
Should I expand this out to the whole country? For example if someone from Sydney is planning a trip to Melbourne and they have landed on my website while researching things to do in Melb - I want to retarget them, right? Some people are telling me it would be silly to target Sydney, if my physical store is in Melbourne.
If anyone has any data/articles/thoughts on this, I would greatly appreciate it.

2024.06.03 20:30 Omologist What is Geotargeting?

What is Geotargeting?
What is Geotargeting?
Understanding Geotargeting
In the realm of digital marketing, geotargeting emerges as a precision tool that enables the delivery of content and advertisements to users based on their geographic location. The technique taps into user geolocation to enhance relevancy and engagement.
Geotargeting Fundamentals
Geotargeting is an approach that identifies and reaches potential customers with location-specific advertisements. By utilizing geolocation data, businesses can serve relevant content that resonates with the local customs, language, or offers.
Data Sources: Geotargeting typically leverages a user's IP address, device GPS data, or other location-based services.
Implementation: In platforms like Google Ads geotargeting, advertisers can define geographical boundaries within which their ads are displayed.
Geotargeting vs. Geofencing
While both are location-based marketing strategies, they have distinct applications:
Geotargeting generally refers to targeting larger geographic areas and tailors content based on the user's location.
Geofencing creates a virtual fence around a specific location, triggering responses when a device enters or exits the predefined boundary. It's often used for real-time marketing efforts.
Benefits of Geotargeting
Geotargeting offers a swath of advantages:
Increased Relevance: Ads and content resonate better when they align with the local context of the user.
Efficient Spend: Marketers can reduce wasted impressions by focusing on areas with a higher likelihood of engagement and conversion.
Businesses can harness geomarketing strategies to boost their return on investment by sending personalized messages to a segmented audience based on location.
Geotargeting Examples
Some practical applications of geotargeting include:
Local Service Promotion: A plumber can target ads to homeowners within a 20-mile radius.
Event Marketing: Concert promoters can target ads to potential attendees in the city where the event is taking place.
By utilizing specific geotargeting examples, businesses are able to connect and engage with their audience more effectively.
Implementation Strategies
Implementing geotargeting effectively involves a blend of audience analysis, crafting localized content, and continuous optimization. Businesses must apply precise techniques to enhance the user experience and refine their marketing strategy through targeted ads and content.
Audience Targeting Techniques
To engage the target audience, businesses should first define and understand their customer profiles, segmenting them by location to deliver tailored messages. By setting up location targeting parameters, they can ensure that ads and content reach users based on relevance to their current or historical geographical locations.
Segment audience based on geographical data
Use GPS, IP addresses, and user input for precision targeting
Content Localization and Personalization
Effective geotargeting hinges on delivering content that resonates locally. Businesses create personalized experiences by localizing content and adapting landing pages to reflect regional languages, cultural nuances, and local events.
Adapt content to local dialects and cultural references
Personalize calls-to-action and offers to increase relevance
Optimization and A/B Testing
To hone their geotargeting efforts, businesses must engage in A/B testing to ascertain which strategies yield the best results. Testing different variations of content, ads, and landing pages provides insights into preferences and behaviors specific to each locale, which feeds back into refining SEO and user experience strategies.
Conduct A/B tests on various elements like headlines and images
Analyze performance metrics to continuously improve targeting and content delivery
Technology in Geotargeting
The technology behind geotargeting harnesses data to enable the delivery of content tailored to the geographical location of individuals. It employs sophisticated software and location technologies to provide relevant advertising experiences.
Geotargeting Software Solutions
Geotargeting software plays a pivotal role in the architecture of location-based marketing. These solutions collect and analyze location data to facilitate the deployment of targeted advertising. For example, GroundTruth, a company specializing in location-based marketing, utilizes such software to optimize the placement of digital billboards or online ads for high impact. These platforms use various forms of location data, including GPS coordinates and IP addresses, to create comprehensive profiles of consumer behavior.
GPS and IP Address Utilization
Two of the main technologies that geotargeting software relies on are GPS (Global Positioning System) and IP address localization. GPS is integral for devices like smartphones, providing real-time location data based on satellite signals. This allows for precise targeting down to a few meters. On the other hand, the utilization of IP addresses can establish a user's approximate location, serving content relevant to the user's city or region. Although less precise than GPS, IP address targeting is valuable because it does not require the user to opt into location services and is applicable to a wider range of devices including desktop computers, which may only connect via WiFi.
By combining these technologies, advertisers can pinpoint the geographical position of potential consumers and serve them with personalized content, thus making geotargeting a powerful tool in digital marketing.
Applications in Different Sectors
Geotargeting capabilities have revolutionized how businesses in various sectors connect with their audience, leveraging location data to tailor experiences and advertisements.
Retail and Ecommerce
In the domain of retail and ecommerce, geotargeting plays a critical role in enhancing customer experience by delivering personalized ads. Physical brick-and-mortar stores are implementing geotargeting to drive foot traffic, sending out location-based promotions, and alerting local clientele about in-store events or sales.
Travel and Tourism
The travel and tourism industry benefits from geotargeting by presenting travelers with relevant booking options and localized deals that enhance the convenience of planning a trip. When users search for travel options in specific destinations, businesses can display targeted ads for hotel bookings, tours, and local attractions, significantly improving the likelihood of conversion.
Restaurants and Food Services
Restaurants and food services utilize geotargeting to influence local prospects, enticing them with promotions when they are within a certain vicinity. With dynamically triggered ads, restaurants can boost their visibility and attract nearby customers potentially searching for a meal, directly influencing foot traffic. Illustrations of this strategy are detailed on platforms like ME-QR, highlighting virtual borders as a crucial element.
Auto Dealerships
For auto dealerships, geotargeting provides an edge by targeting nearby potential buyers and promoting current deals or inventory to a hyper-local audience. By understanding local markets and demographics, dealerships can appeal to those within driving distance, encouraging visits to the dealership lot for test drives or service appointments.
Measuring Success
When businesses invest in geotargeting strategies, the primary focus lies on evaluating conversion rates and revenue impact, as well as fine-tuning search engine marketing for optimal reach and expenditure. These metrics are essential to determining the value added by geotargeting to the marketing budget.
Conversion Rates and Revenue Impact
Businesses measure success by examining the conversion ratesā€”the percentage of users who take the desired action after encountering a geotargeted ad. A significant increase in conversion rates suggests that the geotargeted content is compelling and effectively resonates with the local audience. Additionally, assessing the revenue impact is crucial, as it reflects the direct financial benefit of geotargeting efforts. This assessment often involves tracking sales patterns before and after implementing geotargeting and observing the growth in transactions attributed to it.
Search Engine Marketing Optimization
In the realm of digital marketing, optimization of search engine marketing (SEM) campaigns is a pivotal aspect of measuring success. Companies utilize tools like Google My Business to ensure their ads reach the correct geographic segment, which can lead to more targeted impressions and higher click-through rates. They also make data-driven decisions to allocate their marketing budgets more efficiently, adjusting bid strategies and geotargeting settings to enhance visibility and engagement. This continuous optimization process ensures that SEM efforts align with overall business objectives, driving relevant traffic to increase conversions and revenue.

Some of you might remember my small online (mostly) Boutique Bluray rental/trade/buy store, and many of you in this sub showed me a great amount of support throughout the last 3 years, which I am truly grateful for. I closed the shop down for almost a year but reopened 2 weeks ago as a soft relaunch. Wanted to share that I am running the same sales and more. Link below for those interested and more info too. Still have over 2,000 titles to add to the shop and more deep discounts to come.
https://vintagemedialibrary.myshopify.com/
3 years ago I originally planned to open up a video rental store in SF but for personal reasons a brick and mortar location was postponed... at the time I had already bought inventory for the store and didn't know what to do with it. In my ultimate wisdom I thought I'd try to transition to an online rental store instead. To my suprise the store got a lot of attention very quickly and my goal of making physical media accessible had succeeded. The hobby of collecting can get very expensive but VML was designed to reduce this burden and to serve the community in a different way. (There are many reasons why someone might want to rent instead of buy, but I won't go into detail here.)
I am still amazed that something like VML can exist~ but not without community. No, VML does not pay my rent, the margins are very very low- Though I have found a way to make my personal hobby even more fun and sociable. Everything in the store can be rented or bought, new or used. I strive to have the largest selection at the lowest prices compared across all market place facilitators. I also add many of my own personal titles to the inventory. I am not big on slipcovers or LEs so whenever I can I downgrade my copies and put those up in the shop too.
I am all about transparency, I know there are many people here who can vouch for me, but if you have any questions as a customer or just curious about how I run the shop feel free to contact me. I am easy to get to either on the website, facebook group, or shoot me a PM here. I am ALWAYS open to feedback, whether that be shipping methods, pricing structures, discounts, etc. The goal isn't to grow VML into some big company, just a friendly stop on your movie collecting journey!
Happy Hunting!

What to be aware of when going to recruiting office?
Hello everyone, I have an appointment this Wednesday to talk to a recruiter in order to enlist. I already have a few questions written down but this being my first time ever stepping foot near a recruiting office, is there anything I should look out for or any specific things I should ask?
I already have a few jobs Iā€™d like to get into (11 A-X, 19K & 13M) but I know that everyone that walks through the door is a number for them and theyā€™ll pretty much say anything for me to sign. Big thanks in advance!

Probably a stupid question, but I gotta ask.
Is it unrealistic for me to aim for becoming a recon sniper?
If thats even a thing, when I ask google, I'm not getting any specific answers. I'm 16, female, and definitely joining the army when I'm 18 regardless of being a sniper. I'm working out, in a program called Youth Pathfinders Academy, with the National Guard, and trying to study up. I don't want to be childish and try and aim for some big unachievable thing, I want to be realistic.
I am aware that little people who get into sniper school actually graduate(Like 20%? I'm not sure). And you gotta get a recommendation letter, be in infantry, and all that. Lots of stuff.
If I actually can't do this, I'd like to find a different job than infantry(I thinkā€¦), and I'm open to suggestions.
And after, if I become a recon sniper or some other thing, when I'm done, I want to be an officer in the National Guard. (I'm only mentioning this if it impeads this sniper thing)
Anyway, sorry for the long question. And, I don't care about my feelings being hurt, be as harsh as necessary lol, I just want to stay realistic and keep my goals achievable.

I am 17 and i last went to a psychiatric hospital when I was 13. I have self harm scars, and I know they will see them, if they ask am I able to get away with saying itā€™s old from self harm? Does my medical history matter when I turn 18?

Hi everyone, Iā€™m a high schooler planning on joining the military (not sure about branch) through the ROTC or Academy route. I have a very specific question about life in the Army. Iā€™m Muslim, and I need to pray 5 times a day, at certain periods throughout the day (one of them is early in the morning, another right after noon, another later in the afternoon, one at sunset, and one at night). The prayers themselves and the required purification shouldnā€™t take more than about 10 minutes. If it changes anything, Iā€™m interested in a career as an infantry officer or ground forces officer in general.
My questions are, is it possible to take or be given the time to pray these prayers throughout the day? Does it depend on your job? Are there any specific jobs in which this would not be possible, and any in which it would? Can you formally request an accommodation to pray, or is there any existing method in which soldiers can be granted permission to pray?

hello I just got out of high-school, 18 years old, I am bout to join the army or airforce but my score is only 25 asvab. the army has 09m program and my recruiter told me I can ship quick, I heard that you have 3 tries to pass within 90 days, if I failed 3 times what's going to happen to me or If I don't like the job can I decline, wait or join a different branch like navy or airforce?

Hello, here is my situation. I have signed to 11x and will be shipped in august. My goal is to eventually become a ranger so I wanted to knock out airborne sooner than later. My recruiter told me not to worry about it not being in my contract because I could volunteer for it out of basic. Me not being the brightest didn't research that until Id signed and have to come find out that's not guaranteed. I figured the best thing to do here is to attempt to get it on my contract (if that's possible). So I guess if someone could tell me the best way to get that done OR if there is a better way to go about it. Thank you. - Dumb Teen

im 29m married no kids and slightly underweight likely about to get laid off soon and after talking with my dad whose a retired soldier we both agreed that the army will be a pretty decent long term job. I wont do combat arms and want a MOS thatll let me go to any base so im think 92Y seems like a good job with option 19 for korea as my first base so I can explore there and japan during my free time. Do they deploy alot? Work a lot of hours? Ideally im open to any non combat job that can see most bases if you have a few worth mention that gets slept on.

Tl;dr Excited to commission, found out antidepressants are disqualifications, wanting to know timelines on how long I have to be off the meds and how to ensure I pass MEPS the first time.
Recently Iā€™ve committed myself to training and preparing to commission as an Officer through OCS. I chose my ideal pipeline of Infantry Officer + Airborne School which would allow me to either pursue an airborne division and be a paratrooper or would be one step closer to the SF requirements.
Unfortunately while researching last night I got hit with some pretty shitty news.. that being that if youā€™ve been on antidepressants youā€™re automatically disqualified entirely.
Now I donā€™t have a major depressive disorder, just had minor seasonal depression awhile back and I thought the medication would help (it didnā€™t do much, turns out I was generally just inactive and it ruined my mood, since consistently exercising Iā€™ve mentally felt great lol).
My last prescription was given April 2023, and my last filling of the prescription was a 3 month supply on April of 2024 (the medication always helped to curb my appetite so I figured Iā€™d use it for that purpose but ended up not even using it despite filling it).
What kind of a wait time am I likely to expect before I can go to MEPS? One year from when my prescription was given? One year from the last date it was filled (even if I didnā€™t take the medicine)? Since it was a 3 month supply that I filled.. would I wait a year from the end of that supply?
I assume MEPS will temporarily disqualify me and request a waiver with paperwork showing how long Iā€™ve been off the medication.. I just donā€™t know how long those waivers take and how I can plan effectively to make sure I pass MEPS ASAP.
I intended on commissioning in January next year but this put a really sad wrench in my plans. Iā€™m going to be 31 in July of 2025 so me waiting puts me that much closer to OCS age limits and while I believe I would still be eligible itā€™s just adding stress.
Any help would be appreciated!

Was thinking of enlisting in the army i have a wife and 2 kids and have always contemplated enlisting . When I was 20 years old I got a burglary charge which is violent . Did my sentence got out went to college for welding and I been in the ironworkers union now for a few years making okay money but not as good as the benefits that the army has . I have two kids and a wife and the housing allowance plus the retirement would be a better deal in my eyes . So I have one felony and one dui from over 5 years ago . I been reading and seeing that the recruitment numbers are pretty low and that theyā€™re desperately trying to get people in right now . So Iā€™m posting here to get some opinions and if anybodyā€™s seen or had experience with this ? Thank you for your time

Hi Guys,
Iā€™ve never posted on here before, but really keen to get some advice and see potential outcomes, as the reason for my rejection I believe is incorrect.
Basically, Iā€™ve just been rejected by the army and theyā€™ve stated itā€™s due to having 2 or more episodes of low mood/anxiety & self harm for numerous years.
Now, Iā€™d understand that if that were to be true. However, what has actually happened is I visited my GP at the beginning of the year and spoke about my mental health due to having basically no where to live and being financially unstable at the time - which as most people can probably appreciate is pretty stressful.
This led to me being prescribed the lowest dosage of antidepressants which I did one course of and then stopped taking due to my situation improving and everything now being all ok.
Iā€™ve only ever spoken to my GP regarding mental health this one time and the episode literally only lasted about 2 months.
Is this a fair rejection or should i be appealing this?
Thank you!

This step of choosing whether to enlist or not is one of the biggest career decisions you will likely face I had the same aspirations to join the Army to help pay for college So I signed up for a 2 year option (I was on the hook for 8 years with only 2 serving on active duty) i selected an mos that paid the most towards college. So I ended up being a 12b combat engineer on the ultra VEAP eduction savings program. I was a Private First Class when the 2 years were up and I happily got out and went back to the civilian world to start college. And then a funny thing happened that continued my military career If you want to know more, let me know as I could likely type for hours.

Hello everyone, I'm 35 and talked to a recruiter yesterday about joining the Army. He had me do a pretest for the ASVAB and I scored a 66, he was happy and said I could score an 80 on the real thing since the pretest is harder.
Anyway, I'm a high school dropout and worked shitty retail, warehouse, and delivery driver jobs. I eventually was management in one job which allowed me to buy a house and get married. The marriage was abusive and my ex would hit me and one time she hit her stomach while pregnant, and the baby died the next week. That was the saddest day of my life. I'd also come home at times and she would have a knife in her hand. My life has sucked up until now.
Anyway, I just got divorced and am living with my parents again since 2022. I sold the house and have about 120k in savings, invested it. But I'm stuck working a shitty warehouse job that demands too much of me physically to be worth it. I thought, if i need to work like an athlete here, why not join the military and work hard and get the benefits to back it up?
I know I'm 35 and the kids will be healthier than me in some respects. But I have determination to do something different and live life before it's too late.
Anyone here think its a mistake to go in at 35? I'm relatively healthy.
Thank you

Good Day Everyone,
In January of 2024, I finished my 4-year contract with the Marine Corps where I was an 0621 Radio Operator (now called Telecommunication Systems Operator I believe). Iā€™ve been out few months and quite honestly, I miss the military. I donā€™t want to go back to the Marine Corps though, so I was thinking of joining the Army. I also wanted to change my MOS from Radio Operator to Human Intelligence Collector (35M). However, I have a few questions about this.
1) Does the Army even accept prior service into this MOS especially if itā€™s not my prior MOS?
2) According to the Go Army webpage for 35M, language training can take anywhere from 36 to 64 months (about 3 to 5 years) plus the 20 weeks of AIT. How does this work? Would I just complete training and immediately end my contract? Or would I already have a staff level rank in an MOS I have no experience with?
3) If I am able to go 35M, whatā€™s the day to day life of it like? And if not, what are some other options for me that you know of?
Thank you all in advance!

Anyways, fast forward to last month, I have a podiatrist diagnosed me with bilateral Pes Cavus. Which was an option at MEPS for them to say on the aforementioned foot exam.
I would not say this condition hinders me although I find I have to run on my tip toes.

Hoping for some insight about medical waivers.
I was/am planning on joining the Army or Air Force JAG and cleared medical last year (offers and clearance from both) I had no issues at that point and did not lie about anything. Since then, I have had a few medical problems pop up. At one point, my doctor put me on an anxiety medicine. I was never diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and was only given this medication because I thought I had some ghastly disease; turns out I don't! I was only on the meds for a couple of months and have never had any other anxiety or mental health issues.
Further, I believe I have an autoimmune disease as I have several test results that are indicative of this. Despite vigorous attempts to secure a diagnosis, I have not yet been diagnosed with one, and all doctors have so far said I do not have one.
After reading through this and other subs, I think the best course of action is to tell my recruiter about the anxiety meds, which will likely result in a waiver process. Do you all think I have a chance to get waived in? Because I have not received a diagnosis related to the AI issue, is it okay to refrain from mentioning that? Would I have a chance of getting a waiver to enter the Army with an autoimmune disorder?

I'm assuming that since it's SOAR, intel jobs are rarely picked up by the regiment or would that be somewhat incorrect? Essentially, I would greatly appreciate any information just so that I know how to temper my expectations lol. I also was thinking about a 15 series maybe like 15P but idk, Thanks all.

I was interested in joining California PC 646.9 (Stalking) falls under "219 Harassment, menacing, or stalking." as a non-traffic offense under the conduct waiver list. Although this is a Felony in California, although I'm not sure if my situation falls under Lautenberg Amendment as it was only someone I was in a physical relationship with for a day that falls under the "Boyfriend Loophole" which means it shouldn't be applicable for the Lautenberg Amendment correct? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boyfriend_loophole
If this is the case, I understand am still lifetime firearm banned in California although does this mean that I would be able to join the Army as the Lautenberg wouldn't apply to me even though I'm firearm banned federally? how would this work? I've had my record dismissed via 1203.4(a) although they're still felonies that appeal federally via LiveScan.

Iā€™m a few years (4-5 years) from possibly joining the Army. But I screwed myself over by committing a misdemeanor (shoplifting)
It was a month and a half ago. I believe the value of the merchandise was under $100. The LP didnā€™t call police, I wasnā€™t arrested, and there were no charges. I didnā€™t sign any papers that said I was banned from the store. Also I havenā€™t received a court summons or civil demand letter.
I donā€™t know what to. Iā€™m seriously remorseful because this is my only ever offense. Iā€™m underage and have zero priors or run-ins with the law. I never had the support of my family for joining the military in general, and now with this misdemeanor itā€™s going to be even harder.
If thereā€™s any recruiters that would be willing to help answer these questions Iā€™ll be more than grateful. I donā€™t want to go to a recruiterā€™s office 4-5 years later just to find out I wonā€™t be accepted or be eligible for a waiver.

I made a post asking this before I saw this question thread but are there any Active Duty 68F in here?
What is daily pt like for you guys? I know it can vary wildly with different units but I'm looking for a general idea of what you do on a daily basis. I have a strict workout goal I want to meet and want to gauge how much I'll need to modify my workouts in this MOS. Unusual thing to worry about when researching MOSs I'm sure but it's just important to me.
Also what time do you usually do it? I know most active duty units do pt from 630 to 730 and report to formation at 9. 68F seem to be running things earlier than that. Are you just doing pt earlier in the day or platoon/individually managed?
Thanks!

Heavily considering enlisting but I can't tell if my recruiter is blowing smoke
I got a 95 on my ASVAB, and all of my line scores are above 120. I guessed on pretty much the entire shop/mechanical/electrical sections, so I honestly had expected my scores to be a lot lower than that, and I had genuinely believed my recruiter when he tricked me into thinking I got a 36 when I walked out of the test.
My recruiter ended up telling me my actual score, and was saying I actually got the highest score my specific regional center has ever seen, but I can't tell if he's blowing smoke up my ass just to get me to finish signing up, or if he's being genuine.
I ask because I know recruiters are known to be like car salesmen and will promise you the world.
For context, I'm looking to be a 68W combat medic when I get in, as I already practice as an EMT and want to improve my skills, and am hoping down the road to maybe make officer at some point after getting my bachelor's in something medical/emergency related during active duty stationing.
I go to MEPS Tuesday morning, and believe I'm supposed to sign the papers that day, and take the oath.
Do you guys think that plan is plausible/possible/reasonable, and what are your opinions on the recruiteASVAB interaction?

What can I expect regarding living conditions, day-to-day schedule, weekends, and my time there in general? I appreciate any genuine advice. Enlisting soon, what MOS would you recommend?
So Iā€™m hoping to enlist in a few months and I was thinking about which MOS Iā€™d like to join. Iā€™m interested in the 11C mortar or the EOD. What other MOSā€™s would you recommend? Looking for a more combative type of job.

Question for the Combat Medics of Reddit
Hello, I hope you all are having a good day. I have been kicking around a few MOS's to enlist into, and after a few months of deliberation, I have decided on 68W.
I am a current state Correctional Officer and am starting my NREMT-B class to have before I enlist and ship to Basic Training. I am an individual who likes to be prepared, so I have been working out, reading up on medical items related to the EMT-B course, as well as trying to be prepared for the training I may come across.
One of the ones I've seen mixed answers on is what weapons system 68W's carry. I have an AR-15 style rifle that I try to train with regularly. But I've heard from several (I'm not sure of the reliability of my sources) sources that Combat Medics carry handguns as well. So my question is, will I be carrying a handgun supplementing a rifle? Or will I have a handgun as a primary weapon system?
My question stems from my wanting to preemptively prepare to carry a pistol by purchasing a Sig Sauer M17 and/or a Beretta M9 to train with before enlistment. Thank you all in advance!

Hey Y'all question,
I went to MEPS and failed the depth perception test, and my recruiter said I can't go airborne because of it. Does that mean my hopes of joining is gone or can I take it later down the road by getting a waiver or wearing prescriptions? I really want to join but bummed out that I can't guarantee it in my contract. Thanks in advance for the help!

I ship out for OSUT training in a couple of months with an 11x Option 4 Airborne contract, recruiter said most likely Iā€™d goto the 82nd at Fort Bragg, next options are the 11th in Alaska and than 173rd Italy in that order once I eventually pass all of my training. I would be happy with any of those 3 options but JBER Alaska would be my first choice if I get to choose.
My question is if I have 11x option 4 airborne school in my contract and I pick Alaska as my top duty station of choice on the wish list that theyā€™ll give to us would this significantly increase my chances of going to JBER Alaska instead of say Fort Bragg North Carolina?
My recruiter said that if I have an 11x Airborne contract and I choose Alaska as my top choice on the wish list that Iā€™ll most likely goto Alaska because the Army has been trying to get people to go up there.

My friend had an affair with a military man, he knew she was married. She's a civilian. How can I report this and would any action be taken.
He's not married, but she is and they've had an affair for over 9 months.
She has textual evidence and is going through so much because her husband just found out.
She doesn't deserve to be alone in this, even if he changed his number.
He's also never obeyed his radius, often when he was given a travel radius restriction, he would break it to go see her.

Also what time do you usually do it? I know most active duty units do pt from 630 to 730 and report to formation at 9. 68F seem to be running things earlier than that. Are you just doing pt earlier in the day or platoon/individually managed?
Thanks!

DEP 25B contract
Alright so I just signed my DEP contract for 25B leaving in August of this year for BCT at Jackson. I also have an option 19 in my contract and picked my first duty station in Korea that in return made it a 5 year contract. Just wanted to see if anyone has some prior experience as a 25B in Korea (or anywhere really) and any tips and tricks for AIT. Also, did I fuck myself picking Korea when I could have stayed in the states Iā€™ve had prior service buddies give me mixed reviews.

Sleep disorder waiver
A few years ago when i was a fat fuck i was diagnosed with moderate sleep apnea and shift sleep disorder. i've since lost about 150lbs took a new doctor ordered sleep study showing its now in the normal range. Doctor willing to state that i have no symptoms of either of those sleep disorders along with a sleep study showing normal readings.
Do i have a chance of getting a waiver approved to join with this?

Can having high blood pressure in MEPS be a permanent DQ for joining? What if it's white coat hypertension? Any recruiter have experience with this?

If I was previously diagnosed with a depressive disorder, but was later cured of it. Would I be able to join the Army without a waiver?
Such as like, no medication for 2 years

Iā€™m transferring to the Army as a SNCO, and Iā€™m required to complete BCT. Will I be treated differently? What can I expect regarding living conditions, day-to-day schedule, weekends, and my time there in general? I appreciate any genuine advice. Iā€™d like to make the best of this experience and opportunity for myself and others in training. Thanks!
