The Taunting Hour Broke Me

2024.04.29 04:14 LynnLoud213 The Taunting Hour Broke Me

I'm reviewing The Taunting Hour because it is an episode that did something very wrong and disgusting. This episode came out back in March 2022, and after seeing it when it came out, I knew this was easily a top 10 worst episode of the show. The word I could use to describe this episode is: ATROCIOUS. There were no positives to this episode at all. The concept seemed good but it just did not work at all here. Before this episode, we hadn't gotten a bad episode on this scale since October 2019, but this episode broke that streak of no bad episodes on this level. So, let's get into this.
The episode begins with Lynn at a soccer game against Beaverton with the rest of the family cheering her on, but Chandler purposely blocks Lincoln from seeing the game. Now, Chandler is the least of this episode's problems. As we know, he is just a school bully and that's his nature.
The game continues and things appear to be going fine. But then, Scoots comes in and starts to heckle Lynn in the middle of her game saying that Lynn has emu legs. It then gets into her head causing her to miss the goal. Eventually, all of Scoots' comments get the better of her and she freezes in place and it ends with Beaverton scoring a game-winning goal and Scoots laughing at Lynn.
We then go to the house where Lynn is very angry and goes to her room. She then starts rage-lifting 60-pounders. Lincoln then tries to help Lynn with her problem. After all, he's the man with the plan, right? Well, eventually this plan backfires later on without his knowledge. We will get to that part later.
Lincoln shows Lynn that she is not the only one in the family to have a hater. He starts by showing Lynn a video of Lola at a pageant doing her ribbon dance but one of the judges says it's the same thing from a previous pageant. What the judge says is 100% constructive criticism given how many times in the series we see Lola do the exact same ribbon dance throughout the series.
He then tells her that others in the family have haters. So first, they go to Luna's concert at the Burnt Bean and the manager says they sound worse than her grandma's piccolo band. Lynn then makes a note about that. Then, the two go over to the restaurant where Mr. Grouse gets a meal that he says tastes bad and that Lynn Sr. should stick to lasagna. Third, they then go to Rita's office where they find a bin with letters to the editor for the writing column.
One of the letters reads: Dear Rita, your advice stinks. Lynn opens one of them and lots of hate emojis blast at her. They leave and go back to the house and go onto the computer looking at mean comments on Luan's comedy blog. Finally, they go to one of Lisa's science presentations with Todd, her robot. One of the scientists says that he is sick of seeing Todd so many times and that it's embarrassing with his colleague agreeing.
Then, we go back to the house that evening at the dinner table where Lynn is feeling better. She thanks Lincoln for helping her see that she should not make a big deal about having a hater. She and Lincoln reveal to Lola, Luna, Luan, Lynn Sr., Rita, and Lisa the nasty things their haters say without them knowing. This then causes them to sulk and feel sad. Keep in mind that both Lincoln AND Lynn are involved in telling them about their haters. This is a major red flag here because of what happens the next night and who gets blamed.
Anyways, this causes the criticized Louds to have nightmares and they can't sleep. The next day, they try to make it past the day. Unfortunately, they end up having a terrible day when they were thinking about what their haters say behind their backs.
This includes Lola being unable to perform her ribbon dance at a pageant believing the judges will think her performance is boring, Luan being unable to deliver jokes on a live stream thinking about all the mean comments she got, Lynn Sr. freaking out by imagining Mr. Grouse saying his food is terrible and even freaking out when he actually sees Mr. Grouse, Luna imagining Chunk is the Burnt Bean manager asking her why she even bothered hiring her, Rita imagining receiving many hate letters from people telling her that her advice ruined their lives, and finally Lisa freezing in fear when she thinks that all the scientists will criticize her for using Todd in her presentation.
Then, we cut to the house that night with Lincoln watching a movie on the TV, and this is where everything comes crashing down. The criticized Louds burst through the front door extremely angry at him. They question him why he told them about their haters and that they were all freezing up. He told them that he only told them because he wanted to help Lynn feel better. Oh, but it gets worse. At that moment, Lynn punches through the door also extremely angry at him. She says that his trick to help her did not work as Scoots harassed her more at the mall food court and she says she got emu legs again.
Lincoln then questions why they're paying attention to their haters saying that it doesn't matter what they say. Then Luan uses Mr. Coconuts to accuse him by saying that he doesn't have to deal with it. Finally, the worst part about this scene is where Lola yells "YOU JUST GO AROUND RUINING LIVES!!" at Lincoln and everyone else calling him a life ruiner, EVEN THE PARENTS!! At this point, I lost it. This was the point where this episode broke me.
Remember how I said that both Lincoln AND Lynn were both involved in telling them about their haters? Well, they decide to pin the blame entirely on him! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! Lynn was just as involved! Also, Lincoln was not trying to deliberately piss them off. He didn't know that they would lash out entirely at him afterward! They only take their anger out on Lincoln, but Lynn gets away with it?! It does not make any sense!
The next day, Lincoln has no choice but to tell them about his hater just to get back on their good side, and let me just say, the ending is absolutely DISGUSTING. He shows the videos of many instances of Chandler heckling him. He makes the point that Chandler's comments hurt him at first but that ignoring him began to make it easier for him.
The rest of the Louds just decide to take his advice and they don't learn their lesson. It all comes to a sad end with Mr. Grouse coming in and Lynn Sr. blocking him out thinking that he was there to hate on his food again. But Mr. Grouse was actually trying to tell him that he forgot to put the parking brake on vanzilla. This results in vanzilla rolling backwards and Lynn Sr. chasing it down, and that's the episode.
I don't even know where to begin with this. All I can say is that this episode broke me. I couldn't find anything good about this episode. All of the characters involved minus Lincoln were very unlikeable. All Lincoln did was try to help Lynn with her problem and he didn't know what would happen. He was not trying to deliberately make them angry. He was just trying to help someone.
The way this could've worked is that if Lincoln and the rest of the Louds that have haters pitched in to help Lynn, it could've been better. But nope, this is what we got instead. Also, Luan being involved in this episode was very questionable. Remember Head Poet's Anxiety? Well, this episode basically took that episode and threw it in the garbage. Also, Luna? Really? One of Lincoln's nicer sisters was involved in this as well? It just blew my mind.
The part where everyone lashes out at Lincoln and the ending are just unwatchable. Why is the ending so bad? Well, the fact that they don't apologize to Lincoln for what they did to him the previous night is absolutely DISGUSTING. They had absolutely NO right to take their anger out on him. It was even worse because even the parents were in on it the whole time. This is where it gets very personal for me.
As someone who grew up with a very angry mom who would target me for very stupid reasons, this is why the episode broke me. The part where even the parents call Lincoln a life ruiner really hit me close to home. That's why it angered me to the max. Then again, it would anger anyone. Now, let's get into the characters involved.
Lisa, Lola, and Luan make my bottom 3 on my rankings of the Loud siblings. It honestly doesn't surprise me that they were involved. I was just so shocked at Luna's involvement. She's supposed to be one of the nicer sisters. The parents' involvement, I already talked about. I hated them all in this episode. And finally, the main focus of the episode. Lynn.
Lynn has been in my top 3 rankings ever since Singled Out and Hurl Interrupted. Normally with a character I love, I could never hate them. The worst I could be towards them if the do something bad is that I would just be disappointed, but, I'm gonna say it. I absolutely HATED her in this episode. She takes the cake for being the absolute worst character of the episode. The fact that she was involved in telling the rest of the criticized Louds about their haters and that she got away with it is just unacceptable.
There's a fanfiction of this episode on DeviantArt where Lincoln stands up for himself and retaliates. He rages at them, calls them out for all the bad things they do, and leaves the house, along with Leni, Lucy, Lana, and Lily putting the criticized Louds in their place for what they did to Lincoln. I'd honestly recommend you read that than watch the episode. It's 10x better.
I just cannot believe that Andrew Brooks thought that this was a good idea. What he wrote in this episode is very disgusting. Look, before this, I had high hopes for him. He wrote great episodes like Strife of the Party, and Much Ado about Noshing. I had a lot of respect for him at first, but now, he is one of my most hated writers on the show, much like Sammie Crowley and Whitney Wetta. He should not be allowed to touch Lynn ever again.
This episode was at first a top 10 worst episode of the show, but given my personal experience with an angry parent, this is instead top 5. It currently sits at number 4 on my list. I was going to give it a 2.6/10 because of the concept, but the concept just flat out did not work at all here. This episode was just a complete nightmare.
Final Score: 1.6/10

2024.03.31 10:32 actually_a_demon [Music/Girl Groups] Camren: How a Lesbian Ship Caused the Fifth Harmony's Fandom to Spiral Into Outright Insanity

First of all: hello everyone! I was a lurker in this sub for quite a bit, but this time i finally decided to leave my contribution to the community with a music related drama that i feel like a lot of people don't know/don't talk a lot about. Before starting however, i want to clarify that english is not my first language so sorry in advance for any grammatical errors i might make. All good? Perfect. With that in mind, let me spill the tea.
Introduction: who the hell are Fifth Harmony?
Fifth Harmony (often shortened to 5H, wich i will use everytime i need to refer to them for the sake of brevity) was an American girl group based in Miami, composed of, you guess it, five girls: Ally Brooke, Normani, Dinah Jane, Lauren Jauregui, and Camila Cabello. You might know her for her solo career (mainly the hit songs "Havana" and "Bam Bam") and because she actually left the group in December 2016. The history of why and how she left and all the mess behind it is a whole another can of worms which i don't have the time to explain here, so i will greatly gloss over this. The thing yall need to know for this story is that the group signed a joint record deal with Simon Cowell's label Syco Records and L.A. Reid's label Epic Records after forming in the second season of 2012 American edition of The X Factor. Basically, it was the female american equivalent to One Direction.
They were a big deal in the following years, at least for a girl group perspective, relasing their first EP "Better Togheter" and touring in some low-budget concert in various malls in certain zones of America, to build a fanbase. This fanbase was composed for the vast part by teenage/preteen girls, and they begin to call themselves "Harmonizer". They will grow a lot in numbers in the follwing years, and they will also develop a full on parasocial relationship with the girls. This was that period of time in the music industry when celebrities where actually very active on Twitter and the girls will engage personally a lot with the fandom. Keep this in mind because it would be VERY important later. In 2015 they released their debut album, “Reflection", and their singles "Worth It" and "Sledgehammer" became immensely popular not only in America, but also in Europe. They actually won a Grammy in 2014, so it was kinda a big deal. In 2016 they released their second album, "7/27", with the single "Work from Home" which peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the first top five single by a girl group in a decade on that chart. However, Camila Cabello left to pursue a single career and the remaning girls will go on to make another album the following year, their last one: "Fifth Harmony", with the singles "Down", "He Like That" and a feat with Pitbull, "Por Favor" (which is the most 2017 thing i have ever heard, but i digress). Right now the group is offically "on hold" and every single one of the girls is doing something solo with various degrees of success: Camila Cabello made three albums and she is going to drop a fourth, Lauren Jauregui started to make R&B under an indipendent label , Normani should drop her debut album this year (hopefully), and Ally and Dinah made a bunch of pretty underwhelming singles. Now that you know all of the (really watered down and drama-free) history of the girls, let's jump right in the real reason you clicked on this.
The beginning of the end: the rising of lesbian shipping and "Camren"
Remember when i said that the fandom developed a parasocial relationship with the girls? You also remember how i said they were basically the female version of One Direction? Well, that resulted also in the rising of: shipping. Now. I need to be completely fair here. Shipping members of boybands/girlbands was always a thing and it wasn't a such mind breaking news, neither was invented by 1D fans. Also the lesbian/gay rumors about members of said groups were made since the dawn of time (remember the Spice Girls lesbian rumor that turned out to be true?), but in this specific case there were a lot of similar fandom dynamics between Harmonizers and Directioners. You will soon see why.
Since their early formation on X Factor 2012, an initally small subsect of Harmonizer started to ship togheter Camila Cabello and Lauren Jauregui. It started fairly tame, with video compilations , gifs, pictures of them and things of that sort. The girls themselves were asked about this phenomenon during an interview and they seemed ok with it, if not downright amused, stating that the fans could do "wathever makes their boat float". Is important to note that they were actually very good friends at that time and that they were visibly close on camera, showing affection, hugging and things of that sort. Keep also in mind that they were minors. This will be important later.
Now, the term "Camren" was not even invented by fans. It was Lauren Jauregui herself to coin it on a Twitter post and since that day it became the official name of the ship. Even Dinah was actively playing with fans on Twitter about this, embracing what at that time was basically a meme/inside joke in the community for basically the entire course of 2012-early 2013. To be fair, there were other ships between the girls (Camila x Dinah, Normani x Dinah, Normani x Lauren) but Camren was the "main" ship that at this point every Harmonizer knew. During this period of time it was treated as and inside joke by the majority of the community, like i said earlier. No one was getting hurt and the girls seemed to have fun with it, sometimes actively fueling the speculations with certain snapchat photos and Twitter exanges. You noticed how similar it is to the Harry Styles x Luis Tommlinson situation? Well, if you are familiar with that story you can imagine how things went down in the following years. Spoiler: they got progressivly worse for everyone involved.
The gate of hell opens: the Sun and the Moon and the gay drawings
Now we are in late 2013. The girls are doing good: their popularity was growing and they were doing small concerts and meets and greets. Even when they started to slowly gain fame outside the X Factor circle, they continued to have the same kind of relationship with fans and being active on Twitter, answering to them and whatnot. But Twitter was not the only social 5H used: they also had personal Tumblr blogs Camila and Lauren in particular were VERY active on the site, posting poetry, drawings, quotes, typical Tumblr edgy teen stuffs. (ssweet-dispositionn was Lauren's blog and waakeme-up was Camila's, now deactivated) But hey, it was the norm in 2013 after all. Not that deep, right? Oh no...oh no. You are all so wrong. It was a matter of time since that particular subset of Harmonizer (wich from now on i will call "Camren shippers") started to notice something interesting in their Tumblr posts. Now, before going on, is important to specify that the Camren ship affair begin fairly tame and small, but it started to rapidly grow in intensity during late 2013. This was also due to some videos the girls posted on their official youtube channel, in wich they would do cover of songs, vlogs and things of that sort, it's also worth mentioning some old twitcams in this discussion. Camren shippers at that time were analizing those videos and basically everything that this two poor girls posted in search of "proof" that their ship was real. They analized looks, body language, things they said and everything that was potentially "alluding" to a romantic relationship. It was not a joke or a meme anymore, people were absolutely serious and 100% sure that Camila and Lauren were in love with each other and that they were keeping it secret because...management bad or something. This was the main point shippers used to justify their research of "proof" (read as: obsessive behaviour) and "hidden signals", because in their mind the girls were "trying to tell us without being explixit about it to avoid the anger or management" (how convinient, am i right? lmao). Basically the same things Directioners were saying about Larry.
That being said, let's return to the main point: those people quickly started to notice some supposed "parallelism" between the things Camila and Lauren posted. It looked like they were referencing each other and soon enough people started to basically stalk their blogs. Obviously at one point someone named Kordei made fake tumblr reblogs of those two, but they were quickly discovered and shunned. Then it happened. Lauren reblogged a picture of the sun and the moon kissing on Tumblr, and Camila posted the same picture on Twitter and Instagram some minutes later.
It was the end. I'm not joking, it was the fucking end.
Camren shippers went absolutely FERAL over this. But why, you might ask? First of all, Lauren had a sun and moon pendands and suddenly she was wearing only the sun one. Camila was supposedly wearing the moon one (even if i can't find pictures about it right now, i'm pretty sure it was true because i remember it being used as a proof) Also, Camila was liking a lot of posts on Instagram about, guess what, the sun and the moon. She also reblogged a short story about "impossible love" so you can imagine how the shippers reacted. The sun and the moon basically became universally associated with them (moon with Lauren and sun with Camila, but i also saw some people thinking the contrary, so there wasn't a universal consensus), just like the colors green and blue with Harry and Luis. You now see why i said at the start that the dynamics were super similar?
Also, while all of this was happening Lauren posted the infamous "dragon and unicorn" video, which only fueled even more the speculations. She also recived allegedly some backlash because a fraction of Harmonizers (not Camren shippers) tought she was making fun of that kind of "depression videos" very popular on Tumblr during those years. I can't confirm this for certain tho, since i can only find evidence of this event in the descriptions of the former video.
This was also the period of time when fanfictions about them started to grow in quantity and popularity. To be fair, they were already some in 2012 and some people even theorized that Dinah, Lauren and Camila actually read those, bur there weren't a lot and most importantly, they weren't sexual in nature. But then things changed. People started to write smut fanfic about them when they still were both 16-17 years old. And there were a LOT, they literally invaded Wattpad for a period of time. Now to be completely honest, their fanbase was even younger than them on average, but i don't think it should be used as an excuse. Writing porn fanfics about real underage people is weird even if you are 14, in my humble opinion. Hell, i would argue that writing fanfiction about real people in general is weird, period. Especially when you ship them togheter with no regards of their privacy.
Another major event that happened in this time window is the Lauren’s sketchbook disaster. Right now all the posts about it have been deleted, but i vividly remember it. Basically at one point during a tour in 2014 she allegedly lost her sketchbok, and some fan found it and posted it on their Tumblr. This sketchbook was full of drawings of women and girls, in various grades of nudity. Shippers obviously tought that all this women were non other than Camila. Now, nobody has ever understood if this was her real sketcbook or a fake one made by the fan, but nontheless it was a…honestly very rude and invasive thing to do. But again, this is not the most crazy thing the shippers did.
Let’s return to the main point: remember the infamous sun and moon picture? A fan commented under Camila's post with "it's camren yo" and she actually responded negatively. This was the first time one of the girls expressed genuine discomfort on the ship and would be absolutely ignored into oblivion. And sadly, it won't be the last. Anyway, keep in mind that from this time on Lauren will be the one more vocal about the Camren problem and how much she is bothered by it, even arguing with fans on Twitter and blocking people. Camila would stay relatively silent expect for the former statement. A trend that is actively continuing to this days.
The outing and the harassing
Now let’s fast forward to 2016. I skipped a SHITON of lesser important things and moments that happened between 2013-2016, because the gist was always the same: the 5H posted some videos on youtube, the Camren shipper analyzed it for days to find every bit of “camren evidence” in it, they posted the afromentioned video analysis on yt, they recorded Camila and Lauren on the stage (and even outside of it) and they’ll be completely and utterly delulu. At this point the ship was so huge in the fandom that even non-camren shippers knew about it, you literally could NOT be an Harmonizer and don’t know about it. In this time window are situated a lot of now infamous paparazzi style videos and moments, like the one were they allegedly kiss in a car, the one were they allegedly kiss during a tour in Brazil and this pictureposted by Lauren’s mom on her Instagram, now deleted. This last one looks particularly convincing, but is important to remember that this post was never actually confirmed to be of Camila and Lauren. I mean, one of them was surely Lauren but it was never discovered who the other girl was. Some people argue if she's even Camila, some people argue if the post is real since there are no trace of it whatsoever in other places of the internet and people remember it only for the Pinterest repost. Also i feel is important to specify that during this time people also started to edit photos of them on photoshop to make them look like they were kissing and whatnot. It's veracity is pretty much discussed a lot. I personally don't even remember it on Lauren's mom feed, so it could easily be fabricated.
In regard of crazy analysis, i need to mention the infamous bunk-bed video of 2014. It’s one of the most known “camren proof” moment of the fandom, and i higthly suggest to watch it all because it’s hilariously absurd to see how much shippers were delusional about it. The claims they made on this video are insane, such as: “if you watch the reflection of the wood in front of Camila’s bed you can see the silhouette of Lauren sitting in the bunk”, “Camila’s lips are red, she was totally having sex with Lauren” or my personal favourite, “you can hear Camila’s moans if you listen close enough”. Is important to note that in those years the speculations were so invasive that Lauren and Camila started to behave more cautiously around each other, and for understandable reasons: they weren’t as much physical on camera as they were before, they seemed awkard, they tried to sit as far as possibile from each others during interviews. There are a lot of examples of this, but this video comes immediatly to my mind. To be honest, there are a lot of reasons to explain why the bond between Camila and the other girls was weakening during 2016 (again, drama that i would not get into bc it’s not the point of this post), but it’s confirmed that one of the reason for the tension between her and Lauren was specifically caused by the Camren affair. This attempt to be more neutral in public to not fuel the ship was immediatly misinterpreted by shippers, who tought that they were suddenly less explicit about it because their management scowled them. And so this caused people to ship them even more. It was a snake eating its tail: the more the girls tried to silence the rumors, the more rumors they caused in response.
But then something unexpected happened: Lauren Jauregui came out as bi in 2016 and, surprise surprise, she has a girlfriend! Who is not Camila. Good for her, am i right?
But wait, did she really came out because she wanted it, or she did it because she was…forced to do so?
Camren shippers love to forget this, but Lauren was actually outed by Perez Hilton with their indirect help. Quoting Lauren’s exact words from this interview: “I’d been dating the girlfriend that I’ve had at the time for probably a year at that point, but we had fallen in love when I was 15. I was at my uncle’s wedding in New Orleans and my aunt very innocently posted the photos from the photo booth onto her Facebook page. It was a link for the family to be able to click on and my fans are just a little wild and they found the picture where my girlfriend and I — we were drunk — [were] kissing.” After fans found the photos, they ended up in the hands of the one and only Perez, who then outed her to the general public without thinking twice. Lauren expressed extreme fear, felt like the coming out experience was robbed out of her, and she feared that her extended family would not accept her. In fact, some of her relatives reached out to her parents when the gossip started. It was obviously a very scary experience, but Camren shippers did not care at all. In their mind this was a “gotcha moment”, another confirmation that they were right all along: maybe now that Lauren came out, also Camila would! But…she didn’t. Actually, she never did to this day: Camila has never said a single word about her sexual preferences, but it’s pretty much confirmed that she only dated guys so is safe to assume she is straight.
This, like you can imagine, threw shippers in a crisis. One of the girls was bi, the other was not. Plus, how can they justify the ship and support their narrative of the “homophobic management that tries to make them stay in the closet” now that one of them is in an open relationship with another woman? Simple: they started to suggest that Lucy was…a beard. A beard for what exactly? I have no idea. For hiding Camren, i suppose. Because for some reason their management would choose to hide a potentially scandalous homosexual relationship with another homosexual relationship. Yeah, it totally makes sense. Absurdity of this claim aside, Camren shippers were truly convinced by this. The idea that both their past boyfriends were beards was always trowed around, but this time it was different because obviously Lucy is a girl. There were another two “sub categories” of shippers that belived different things, however. They either belived that:
  1. The whole outing thing was fabricated by their label and Lucy was supposed to replace Camila when she’ll leave 5H. Also, Lauren and Lucy were not really in a relationship and it was used only for visibility and to “kill” once and for all the Camren speculations, since people were apparently too “close to the truth” or wathever.
  2. The leaked kiss picture was faked or “a platonic kiss”. Which i find incredibly funny to think about, because it’s literally the same excuse homophobic people will use to try to dismiss lesbian relationships. But remember guys, they were totally allies and they truly valued the happiness of those girls!
You can imagine how it went down. Some people started to ship Lauren and Lucy (Laucy) and they actively went on war with the Camren shippers. Other started to harass Lucy on behalf of the Camren cause, Lauren also recived some similar dms and i belive Camila did too. But it’s important to note that almost all the infos about this harassment are completely erased from the face of the internet in the present day. I distinctly remember (and other ex-Harmonizer that are reading this may also do) a Tumblr blog in particular in which the owner was actively hoping that Lucy and Lauren would break up soon, posting edit of Lucy with devil horns and insulting her. Searching it, however, would not result in anything. If someone has more information about this, please, tell me in the comments!
Lauren during all of this mess was becoming progressivly more and more rude to shippers online (and honestly, can i blame her?), blocking people like it was her reason to live. Camila, instead, was silent as a tomb. Anyway, Lucy and Lauren broke up in early 2017, but the fandom was in chaos because of Camila leaving, so there wasn’t time to celebrate. Things were tense between her and the other four, but this didn’t stopped Camren shippers. Even when Camila wasn’t in the group they STILL tought that she and Lauren were secretly togheter or, in alternative, that Camila went away because they broke up thanks to Lucy. This was instigated by an Instagram live that Dinah’s aunt did, in which she seemingly confirms that the two were in fact a thing. But she was already knew in the fandom for saying random shit just for clout, so not everyone took her words with absolute trust.
Another thing worth mentioning: an old Camila’s demo from 2015 leaked in 2017. The song in question is called “Only Told The Moon” and, if you remember the sun and moon thing that happened on Tumblr, you can imagine how shippers reacted when it surfaced. Random fun fact: a studio version of the song it's rumored to exist somewhere, but nobody has ever found it or leaked it. So it can tecnically be considered lost media.
The aftermath
After all of this absoulte mess, you’re probably asking yourself: what happened after 5H were disbanded? The answer is: not that much, but at the same time the shipping didn’t really stop. For context: all the girls didn’t talk to each other for a while because of some unrelated drama that happened behind the scenes, so yes, even Camila and Lauren didn’t talk anymore. However Camila published her debut album in 2018. There is still a fraction of ex-Harmonizers and Camilizers (Camila Cabello’s fans) that wholeheartly belive a lot of the songs on this album are directed towards Lauren. Specifically they reference Consequences , Never Be The Same and I Have Questions. Camila has actually come on record to say what her songs are really about , but do you think they belived her? Obviously not. She was still controlled by her management to stay silent. Do you see the repeating patterns here? The same thing happened with her second album ironically titled “Romance” with songs like Shameless, Liar, Easy, Bad Kind Of Butterflies The problem is that in 2019 she also started dating Shawn Medness and a lot of people (not necessarily shippers) tought it was pr for promoting their new single, Señorita. I won’t indulge too much into this speculation or if i think it was legit or not, but i will say that all the Camren shippers belived that the relationship was fake and that Shawn and Camila were each other’s beards. Yes, because they also tought Shawn was secretly gay and silenced by his label, which was coincidentally the same as Camila’s.
Leaving Cabello aside, Lauren made a very interesting interview during an episode of the podcast En La Sala With Becky G, that went live on October 2020. I higthly suggest to watch it all because she actually talks about a lot of interesting stuffs, but also she directly address the Camren situation after three years of total silence. Basically, she confirms that it was never real and that the shipping made her feel very uneasy, she also elaborates on how the shippers made her feel like a predator since Camila was straight and she was not. Some former Camren fanatics actually listened to her this time and backed down, others were only reinforced in their belives that she was also lying because her management told her to. (even if she is under her own label so is it doesn’t even make sense. Why would she lie? But hey, if you are here you should have understood that not even logic can stop Camren shippers) During the COVID-19 pandemic some shippers belived that Camila and Lauren were quarantined in the same house thanks to some posts on their Instagram. They were also convinced that they secretly married each other because they wore two very similar rings. Remember, at the time Camila was still officially dating Shawn. They also overanlized things they posted, videos and all of the sort to back their claims, even suggesting that they were married because…Camila’s yoga mat was very similar to Lauren’s. I’m not joking. It’s all in the video linked. In 2021 they found an Instagram story posted by Lauren during Christmas in which can allegedly be heard her mom calling for Camila., suggesting that they were celebrating togheter. Now is important to remember that Lauren and Camila still didn’t officially talk to each other during this time, but in my opinion it’s possible that they mantained some contact and choose to not be public about it in fear of this kind of media reaction. And if that was the case, i don’t blame them at all: this Camren affair caused tension between them, so it makes sense they wouldn’t want people to know they were/are still friends. But i think we can all agree that saying this and thinking they are secret lovers are two very different things.
So yeah, Camren shippers still exist in 2024. They are less famous and less influential, but they are equally creepy and invasive like in 2015. Some people still comment under Lauren’s Tik Tok Camren related stuffs, and she continues to say they are delusional and to stop talking about it. Obviously, this doesn’t work. People do the same under Camila’s post too, but she never responds.
The conclusion
So, now that i illustrated all of this i will use this paragraph to write what i personally think about the situation. To be honest, when i was an Harmonizer i had some doubts that there was a layer of truth under all of this. I wasn’t a full on Camren shipper and thankfully i was mature enough to not harass them, but i was suspicious. In light of news about their bad label contract that surfaced in the recent years, i don’t think the possibility of a “secret relationship” (heavy quotation mark) is totally impossible. I don’t necesseraly belive they were in a relationship, but maybe there was some flirt of that sort/ unrequired feeling situation. But ultimately, only they can truly know what happened and we probably will never know.
That being said, i think that nobody should have cared this much about the private lives of two teenage girls. I don’t belive people at the time realized how much invasive and creepy they were and how much damage they caused: 90% of Camren shippers were queer girls in the closet and, as a queer girl myself, i can understand the desire to see your idols be like you, and i know that it was all projecting. I don’t have bad feelings against them in that sense. But you should also be aware that celebrities are not characters for your fantasies, they are real people with real feelings. And this situation was particularly bad for Lauren, who was in fact a queer person and suffered from a very bad outing caused by this shipping obsession. In the interview with Becky G that i linked earlier, she also express how much this affects her current love life, how much anxious she feels around other girls, how much she overanalizes herself in the fear of being percived as a predator. And i think this is very sad and unfair. Those shippers need to realize that shipping real people can caused damage in both cases. If they were friends, all this speculations ruined their friendship and caused them to be distant from each other, so a real platonic bond was ruined for a specultion that wasn’t even true to begin with. But listen. Even if they were really togheter…what is the point? Like, seriously, what is the point in forcing two potentially queer people out of the closet? There is a reason if they “didn’t say anything” and searching for hidden “proofs” is invasive and scary and can be dangerous if one of them/both of them are queer. This is exatcly what happened with Lauren: they damaged the life of a real queer person over a fictional paring of dubious veracity.
And at this point i ask, is it really worth it?Are you really an “ally” or are you just indulging in your personal fantasy not giving a single shit about the people involved, who are openly expressing discomfort on behalf of your behaviour? But the thing that bugs me the most is the fact that a lot of Camren shippers used to excuse their behaviour with “but they were the one to start it” and honestly, what the fuck does it mean. There is a difference between a joke two people made one time and a full on stalking of everything they posted. They have the right to feel uncomfortable about it and to change idea, particulary when the situation was so intese to cause damage to real life romantic relationship (remember all the Lucy drama?). Plus, when they made that joke they were 15. They were literal kids and no one should have continued to care this much about a thing they said for laughs ten years ago. Honestly, it’s shitty to justify this kind of behaviour with this statement. You don’t care about them as artists and people, you care only about the fictional version of them that you created in your mind.
So…yeah, that is all! I tried to write in chronological order every major event that happened during 5H’s run related to this, but remember that i also skipped a lot of stuffs because otherwise this post would be way too long. And it’s already long as hell. This group was truly a mess, and maybe i will do another post diving deep into their Camren unrelated dramas, if i feel like it. Nowdays i think that nobody talks really about them with the same intensity they do with One Direction and i wanted to leave my contribution as an ex-Harmonizer. That being said, thanks for everyone that has read this far! I truly appreciate it. I also hope my english is not that bad and that it was easy to understand. Thank you again and have a good day!
EDIT: Added an insight to the Instagram photo that Lauren's mom posted since some people were confused.

The Chatelaine by Kate Heartfield (Title With a Title HM, trans male character) - 4*
A fun retelling of a Flemish folktale that I had never heard of. Having a curmudgeonly older woman as a main character is a nice change of pace. Well, I'm pretty sure she's only in her 30s, but 30s was “older” for a commoner in medieval Bruges.
This is a revised edition of the book previously published as Armed in Her Fashion in 2018, and according to the content note, has "much less misgendering" of the trans character than the first edition. I picked up the original from the library to compare, and it's pretty yikes. Claude is a trans man, and in both versions, he's introduced as male and his third person limited sections gender him correctly, but in the original, he's referred to as a "girl" in all other characters' sections, both in their thoughts and by the third person narration. There's no way I would have finished the book with that version (gendering the trans character correctly in the narration is the bare minimum), let alone rated it positively. In The Chatelaine, the only times he's misgendered are in dialogue, some of the dialogue mentions are made neutral, and most of the main characters gender Claude correctly in general. With those simple changes, the representation is surprisingly good. It really goes to show how literally just gendering the character correctly goes so far, but hey, it's cool to see the author learning from her mistakes and I'm glad it got fixed.
Sovereign by April Daniels (Superheroes HM, trans female and nonbinary characters) - 4*
A solid sequel to Dreadnought. Danny is impulsive, angry, and resilient and I love her (and I'm very glad she's gonna go get some therapy after this).
Trans author. In addition to the trans lesbian main character Danny aka Dreadnought, we also get a nonbinary/genderqueer side character Kinetiq. It may be partly due to the types of books I've been reading this year, but I've been noticing more books with multiple trans characters and I really like that. For one, it helps represent a diversity of trans experiences, but also, most trans people nowadays do interact with other trans people at some point, and there are a lot of interesting interpersonal dynamics involved in that. Kinetiq is a bit of a punk/anti-capitalist trans stereotype, but I don't mind because I personally know people are the same, and I don’t think it’s well known outside the trans community anyways. Danny deals with some on-page transphobia and misgendering (plus literal torture) from the TERF villain Greywytch, but I think it's handled well and doesn't come off as "trans trauma porn." This is partly because we experience it from Danny's POV, and she treats Greywytch with exactly the contempt she deserves, plus the torture happens early in the book for not-entirely-trans-related reasons and helps set up some arcs (rather than at the end of the book for "impact" as it would be with trauma porn). I also thought it was funny how Danny's idea at the end to use the wealth confiscated from the billionaire supervillain to provide free transition services is basically the same idea as in Future Feeling by Joss Lake (where a billionaire's kid makes free trans healthcare widely available).
The Will to Battle by Ada Palmer (Bottom of the TBR HM, nonbinary character, genderless culture) - 5*
The Will to Battle is the third book in the Terra Ignota series, and had been on my TBR since 2017. It wasn't the absolute bottom of my SFF TBR (that honor goes to Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson, added in 2015), but it was the third oldest, and the oldest that fit my theme. I originally wanted to wait for the series to be completed before reading, but by the time the fourth and final book rolled out in 2021, it just wasn't a priority anymore, especially since these books are dense and complex and philosophical, making them hard to just pick up on a whim. But I'm thankful for the nudge to finally read them, because once I started back up, I was hooked all over again.
This series is set in a society where everybody uses they/them pronouns and gender is a taboo subject, so the concept of being transgender doesn't exist. If I had to identify some explicit rep, I would point to Sniper, who would almost certainly fall under our modern definition of nonbinary (which usually falls under the trans umbrella because in our current society, nonbinary people inherently have a gender different from the one assigned to them at birth, but that definition breaks down a bit in a society which does not assign genders at all, let alone at birth). Sniper likes using the "it" pronoun instead of the standard "them", though they're not sure if they want it for everyday use by strangers/acquaintances (hence why I will use they/them). At the end of the series, they get put in charge of a committee to study gender for the first time in centuries and decide whether to re-integrate it into society. Their initial thinking is to start with research, particularly with the divisions in sporting competitions that replaced gender-segregated sports (they are an Olympic athlete so it makes sense they would think to start there, but ugh I'm so tired of the whole trans-people-in-sports debate). They also propose a program for people to take a year to explore gender and talk to others about what gender means, which I think would be pretty cool.
Dead Collections by Isaac Fellman (Magical Realism HM, trans male and nonbinary characters) - 4*
It's a bit rambly in parts, but it's refreshing and actually hits the cozy/heartwarming vibe better than a lot of books I've tried that specifically target that "cozy fantasy" niche. I like the take on vampirism-- Sol's vampirism is more like a chronic illness than anything, and used as a treatment/life extension for terminal conditions; instead of getting super-speed, bodily changes happen in slow motion. This is a perfect fit for Mundane Jobs, especially because the author is an archivist IRL, but unfortunately it's not HM for that so I shoved it in the only other slot I could justify it in.
Trans author. The main character Sol is a trans man. He became a vampire at a year on T, and his changes have slowed to a crawl, leaving him stuck long term in that weird middle ground of not-quite-passing (which happens to plenty of people without vampirism involved). He meets and befriends a fellow Jewish trans man at the blood bank. He falls in love with a person who turns out to be questioning their own gender (and ends up settling on nonbinary). I liked getting to see Sol's doubts and dysphoria as Else explores their masculinity while he still supports their exploration and affirms their new understanding of their gender. I'm always wary of books that focus on the cis partnerelative/friend of a trans person, because they so often end up either misgendering or tokenizing the trans person, or trivializing their suffering in favor of the cis person who has it oh-so-hard dealing with a trans partnerelative/friend. But it really can be tough to adjust to someone you know transitioning, so it was nice to see it from Sol's perspective, even if it could have been explored in more depth. Fellman also tries to tie being trans to fanfiction writing but doesn't dig too deep into it other than some surface-level stuff about exploring repressed gender feelings through slash fic. I did see some reviews that accuse the book of being lesbophobic for having a transphobic butch lesbian and a lot of lesbian characters that end up being trans (like Else) or possibly-trans (like Else’s dead wife), but I think this is just a side effect of having a limited cast and a strong focus on the experiences of transmascs who used to be lesbians. It's not trying to erase lesbians, it's just not really about them, and that's ok. Anyways, some of the themes/connections could have been explored more, but I think the rep is great overall. Plus it's got one of the best trans one-liners I've seen in print ("God misheard my very simple request, so he made me a pianist") and a possible nod to the Terry Pratchett book "Feet of Clay" (which introduced trans-coded female dwarfs).
Their Heart A Hive by Fox N Locke (YA HM, nonbinary character) - 3*
I liked the slice of life bits, but wasn't invested in the overarching mystery/plot. I was hoping it would be cozier, but I've been struggling to find books that hit that Legends and Lattes niche quite right.
Trans author. There's a genderqueer Lord and Lady of Honeymoore Manor. For most of the book, they seem to be a fairly standard form of genderfluid, swapping between male and female on a regular basis (though not always completely gender-conforming). At the end, it's revealed that they're an immortal who has faked their death many times to pose as different people throughout the years, with various names and genders, though none of them fit perfectly. After revealing this, they choose a new name meaning "daughter of the stone, son of the sea" and announce themself to be both lord and lady at once (with our modern terminology, they would be considered bigender). The rep is fine overall, though it is some of the most binary nonbinary rep I've ever seen, and that's not a compliment.
The Healers' Home by S E Robertson (Mundane Jobs HM, trans female character) - 3*
This book didn't hit the cozy slice of life vibe as nicely as the first book in the series, which was disappointing. I found Kei's point of view extremely frustrating to read, with his self-hatred and completely illogical negativity. I'm not planning to read the next book in the series. Fun fact— I was the 100th person to rate this book on Goodreads, so I'm sorry if anybody wanted to use it for Self-published HM.
Trans author. Agna's Aunt Naire is a trans woman (note she has a very small role and I don't think she even gets any direct page time, so this wouldn't necessarily count if you're trying to sub the 2021 bingo square in somewhere). Unfortunately, it's mentioned exclusively in the context of her medical transition making her "more susceptible" to certain kinds of cancer. There's a common myth that hormone therapy is "dangerous" and increases the risk of cancer, though this is NOT supported by medical research (source 1, source 2, source 3). I've seen a lot of parents (some well-meaning but misinformed, some blatantly transphobic) try to stop their kids from getting life-saving medical treatment because of it. Given the harm this myth causes to real-life trans people, I think it's irresponsible to legitimize it even in a fantasy setting.
The Bone Doll's Twin by Lynn Flewelling (Published in the 00s HM, gender swap shenanigans but no explicit trans rep) - 5*
I liked this enough that I binged the whole series. No particular book in the trilogy stands out as a 5* on its own, but I'll give the series a 5 for being consistently well-executed throughout. I liked the characters, and I liked the relationship dynamics, particularly between Tobin and the other noble kids in the Companions.
While I found books exploring nonbinary genders through aliens and far-future worlds in every decade from the 60s to 90s, the options for the 00s were pretty limited. Tobin/Tamir was born female, had their body magically transformed into their murdered twin brother's body, and was raised as a boy before ultimately learning that they are "really" a girl and physically transforming back to their original body (I don't think this much is a spoiler as the general story arc is obvious very early on). They're not really trans as we would understand it, but they do go through some similar experiences to trans people. The books generally use he/him pronouns before the transformation, and she/her pronouns after (which makes sense within the story but isn't good practice for most real-life trans people), so I'll just use they/them for simplicity. Tobin/Tamir doesn't show any "signs" other than liking dolls and like-liking boys. They seem to like their male body, are resistant to the idea of being/becoming a girl, and actively miss their penis after it's gone (though it's not clear if that's due to their residual connection to Brother, which causes "phantom penis" sensations and is removed/resolved at the very end of the trilogy), but also seem to accept being a woman at the end. It's not really clear how they would "identify" if given the choice, as neither the author nor any of the characters show any awareness of the possibility of being trans. I would've liked to see Tobin/Tamir connect more to other female characters-- there's a hint of it in the way they relate to the ghost of the first Queen Tamir, but their friend Una was criminally under-utilized. The most relatable part was actually the other characters' reactions to Tobin/Tamir's transformation, in particular Ki (the best friend/love interest) with his struggle to adjust. So overall, the identity aspects were super under-developed by modern standards, but whatever, it was the early 00s.
When the Angels Left the Old Country by Sacha Lamb (Angels and Demons HM, nonbinary nonhuman character) - 4*
This was a fun, easy read with wonderfully endearing characters. I loved the idea of an angel and a demon as chavrusa (Talmud study partners). It was nice to learn some new Yiddish vocab and Jewish mythology.
Trans author. The angel is genderless and uses it/it/its pronouns. It chooses to look like a man for convenience (since women weren't often able to study freely at the time), and it doesn't particularly mind being misgendered. While this was pretty unique, it doesn't really feel like representation because for much of the book, the angel is very non-human and does not think in human ways. However, I did like that even as it takes on a permanent name and becomes more human-like in its thoughts, it remains genderless. The angel and the demon are very close and implied to be more than "just" friends, but their relationship isn't necessarily romantic and certainly isn't sexual-- they could equally be interpreted as close friends, as a romantic couple, or as a queerplatonic partnership, which is cool because you don't often see that kind of ambiguous close relationship represented.
Transmogrify!: 14 Fantastical Tales of Trans Magic edited by g haron davis (Five Short Stories HM, nonbinary, trans male, and trans female characters) - 3*
This is feel-good trans wish fulfillment, and felt like a spiritual successor to my trans bingo anthology from 2021, No Man of Woman Born. Quality-wise, it was a bit of a mixed bag, as anthologies often are, and a lot of the morals/endings were a bit too simple/convenient for my taste, but I enjoyed it overall. My favorites were "Dragons Name Themselves" by A R Capetta and Cory McCarthy and "Espejismos" by Dove Salvatierra. My least favorites were "Bite the Hand" (1*/DNF since the writing style just didn't work for me) and "The Door to the Other Side" (2* since I finished it, but I really disliked the handling of suicide, especially with its placement as the last story of the book). There were a lot of Harry PotteJK Rowling references, and a few stories seemed like direct attempts to reclaim certain tropes (e.g. magic schools, broomstick sports).
Trans authors. Story by story, the written representation itself was great, all the way down to the details. It's at the macro level where this anthology suffers. Out of 14 stories, 11 had nonbinary main characters, 1 had a trans girl, 1 had a trans boy, and 1 had dual nonbinary and transmasc protagonists. All of the authors seem to be nonbinary (at least based on their pronouns listed in the bios). Nowhere in the synopsis or marketing is this nonbinary focus acknowledged. I feel like the editors/publishers should have looked at this and gone "whoops, we accidentally made a nonbinary anthology, let's pivot." For a general trans anthology that specifically sets out to represent "many different genders and expressions and experiences" to include so little binary representation feels like it's saying that binary trans people either don't have a variety of experiences/expressions or don't need/deserve representation. A lot of the characters' struggles were also very straightforward "nonbinary person finds/makes a place for themself in a binary world," which got a bit repetitive.
The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White (Horror HM, trans male and female characters) - 5*
I ended up having more YA on this board that I would have liked, just because there's comparatively a lot of trans rep in YA and my choices were limited on some of the squares. I had a bad YA run right before reading this and almost replaced it, but I'm glad I didn't because this was actually really fucking good. I loved the Victorian London setting with a spirit-based magic system.
Trans author. The main character, Silas, is a trans boy. I loved how Dr. James Barry) (a real-life trans man from the early 1800s) is featured as an inspiration for Silas. Silas is autistic, which was also exciting to see because people who are trans are more likely to be autistic than the general population, but I hadn't seen that intersection represented until this year. He meets both a fellow trans person (Daphne, a trans girl and his betrothed) and a fellow autistic person for the first time in this book, and I think the way he sees himself reflected in them really hammers in the importance of representation. I think White also does a good job of highlighting the hazy border between dysphoria about a feature and dysphoria about how society views that feature. For example, before Silas meets Daphne, he's absolutely disgusted by the idea of pregnancy, to the point of researching and fantasizing doing a hysterectomy on himself. After he meets her, he realizes that he "doesn't actually know how much of [his] fear and revulsion is linked to the world's inherent gendering of everything reproductive."
Body After Body by Briar Ripley Page (Self-Published HM, trans male and female characters) - 4*
I quite enjoyed this fever dream of a novel. I don't think it'll ever enjoy mainstream success, and I honestly wouldn't recommend it to most people, but it's a quick read, so if you're in that niche where queer (both in the "weird" sense and in the "trans/LGBT" sense) anti-capitalist body horror appeals to you and you're fine with some weird sex and vulgar language, maybe give it a shot.
Trans author. This book is set in a future where poor people can access advanced medical care by selling themselves into 7 years of indentured servitude (only a slight exaggeration of the current American healthcare system) with their memories wiped. This deal includes medical transition, but only one-size-fits-all binary transitions, and only people who can fully "pass" afterwards are accepted. Even with those stipulations, it's stated that about 89% of the indentured servants are trans. All four of the main characters (3 men, 1 woman) transitioned in this way, though one of them didn't get a fully binary transition despite wanting one (because plot reasons), and another one would have preferred a less binary transition if he were given the option. It's mentioned that rich people have other transition options including nonbinary body mods available, though the general public seems to be transphobic overall. There's some on-page transphobia, mostly in flashbacks as the memory-wiped laborers regain their memories, but it wasn't gratuitous. The book uses terminology that many trans people may find uncomfortable-- for example transsexual/cissexual and references to a trans man's cunt-- but at the same time, some trans people do use these terms to describe themselves. Personally, knowing the author's identity is important to me in this situation; I would not feel comfortable with a cis author using those terms, but I'm okay with it from a trans author. On a separate note, I've been seeing a lot of trans authors writing monsters and body horror, and it makes a lot of sense-- you know, something about the experience of being vilified by society and/or feeling disconnected from (or even disgusted by) one's own body leads a person towards certain themes.
The Bruising of Qilwa by Naseem Jamnia (Middle-East HM, nonbinary and trans male characters) - 4*
A quick read, it brings up some interesting questions for the reader to chew on but doesn't quite have the page length to explore the answers. I really liked the dynamic of Firuz (the main character) and Afsoneh (their blood magic student)-- I've read plenty of stories from the perspective of the young, naturally gifted protege impatient with their older, more knowledgeable but less powerful mentor, but I've rarely seen it from the POV of the mentor.
Trans author. The main character Firuz is nonbinary, their younger brother Parviz is a trans boy, and there are mentions of minor characters using a few different kinds of neopronouns. Firuz and Parviz come from Dilmun, a queernormative culture where people are introduced with their pronouns (as in, they-Firuz or he-Parviz) and medical transition is readily available, but they are currently refugees in Qilwa, where gender-affirming medical treatment is not readily available. Firuz medically transitioned in Dilmun, and is trying to learn the spells to help Parviz to medically transition as well-- in particular, they are trying to learn to perform a version of top surgery, as Parviz has severe chest dysphoria. This dynamic hits pretty hard at a time (May 2023) when some states in the US are passing laws to limit access to medical transition, which tend to affect younger trans people and people trying to start transition more than older, post-transition folks, and I think Jamnia did a great job of showing Parviz's frustration and desperation and anger.
The Chromatic Fantasy by HA (Published in 2023 HM, trans male characters) - 5*
I'm not usually a big fan of graphic novels, but I really liked this. It's whimsical and earnest, the gay romance was cute, and the fantasy trappings (cloaks and castles and all that jazz) in riotous color are exactly my aesthetic.
Trans author. The main characters, Jules and Casper, are two trans men in a relationship with each other, and there's a minor character labeled with she/they pronouns. There are several explicit sex scenes, and I think the author is good at making them look masculine even when drawing them naked without having had any gender-affirming surgeries. I liked the personification of Jules's self-doubts-- in particular, there's a rant about Jules's relationship with his genitals that feels way too specific to be completely made up, which makes the representation feel very personal and real.
The Last Echo of the Lord of Bells by John Bierce (Multiverse HM, nonbinary and trans female characters) - 4*
A solid ending to a great series. The number of side character POV chapters was a little indulgent, but it had plenty of the imaginative uses of magic and cute found family vibes that I love the series for. Note: There are some doors that lead to other worlds in this multiverse, but I consider this HM because doors aren't the main way to travel between worlds, and I feel like traveling to a different plane via labyrinth is a sufficiently unique method that this deserves HM. And technically, I don't think anybody ever walks through a door to another world in this book (though one character flies through one).
I read this book without having planned to use it for bingo and was pleasantly surprised to find some trans rep. There's a prominent nonbinary side character, Shimmering Cardovan, and a minor trans woman (well, minor in prominence, but major in power), Threadqueen Iblint. Shimmering Cardovan is tall, muscular, and bearded, and I appreciate the representation that people can use they/them pronouns without being physically androgynous. Though they're also very flamboyant, and control rainbow gemstones with their magic, so they'd still be considered very queer-presenting by our world's standards. Threadqueen Iblint is the second character in the series noted to have trained in magic to a high level in order to physically transition (the first was Zophor, a mangrove lich briefly mentioned in this book), which implies that medical transition isn't easily available in this world.
Dawn by Octavia Butler (POC Author HM, nonbinary aliens) - 5*
This is science fiction at its best. It's got strong themes (consent/control/freedom) and one of the most truly alien depictions of an alien species that I've ever read. I read the whole series back-to-back-to-back.
The Oankali have three sexes, male, female, and ooloi. Ooloi and ungendered children are properly referred to using it/its pronouns, though a lot of the human characters struggle with this and end up using he or she pronouns instead. Oankali children are not sexed or gendered until they reach puberty, and their adult sex depends on their childhood experiences-- children tend to become the same sex as their favorite parent, and the opposite sex of their closest sibling. So in a way, all Oankali children get some amount of choice in their adult sex. In later books, there's a mention of some Oankali-human construct children developing into a different sex than would be expected based on their childhood appearance, but there's no acknowledgement of human LGBT+ diversity.
The Final Strife by Saara El-Arifi (Book Club HM, nonbinary and trans female characters, trinary-gender culture) - 3*
The only major character I really liked was Hassa. Sylah was okay, but Anoor was actively annoying. They didn't have much chemistry and I skimmed through a lot of the romantic bits, but to be fair I find myself doing that a lot when reading YA-- and despite the fact that Sylah and Anoor are 20, and my local library shelves this as "adult," it very much reads like a YA novel. The one part of the romance I did like was how Anoor cut off the relationship after learning just how much Sylah lied to her about— but I'm sure they'll end up just getting back together in book 2. I won't be continuing with this series.
The Wardens' Empire is queernormative, with a trinary gender system of men, women, and musawa. Their god Anyme is musawa, there are several musawa minor characters, and the tritagonist Hassa is a trans girl. The trans inclusion in the world-building felt very surface-level and tacked-on. For example, it's explicitly mentioned out that musawa can use any pronouns, and that anybody can identify as any gender without physically transitioning, which is great, but there's no mention of any way that people might signal their correct gendepronouns to others, and we never see anybody ask for another person's pronouns. There aren't any musawa-specific terms mentioned for things you might expect like family relations (e.g. mothefather, etc), lady/gentleman, boy/girl, etc. It is mentioned that hormone herbs and gender-affirming surgeries are widely available, but it doesn't make much sense that the oppressed Ghosting servant caste would have easy access to affirming surgeries when they're not allowed to have hands or tongues (the Embers literally cut them off at birth) and are forced to work as soon as they can walk. That said, I'd rather have a lazy attempt at queernormativity than an even lazier imposition of real-world transphobia.
Werecockroach by Polenth Blake (Novella HM, nonbinary and trans female characters) - 4*
This is exactly the kind of story that works well as a novella; there's a fun premise with the werecockroaches and the alien invasion, some solid themes about misfits and found families, and it doesn't overstay its welcome and make you question the logistics too much. I liked Rin's dry humor a lot.
Trans author. The main character Rin is agender, asexual, and aromantic, a combination sometimes referred to as AAA (triple-A, as in the batteries). I don't remember ever reading another book with a AAA character, so it was cool seeing that represented for the first time, especially with Rin being poor and a person of color, attributes which also tend to be underrepresented among trans characters. I liked how all of Rin's identity labels are mentioned explicitly in the book, but in a way that made sense and felt natural. Their friend Addie is a Jamaican-British trans woman, but we the audience don't learn she's trans until the epilogue/extra short story from her perspective, which is cool to see. A lot of trans people are not openly trans, either because they are closeted (they live as the gender they were assigned at birth) or stealth (they live fully as their true/target gender), but it can obviously be tough to represent this when all other characters believe they are cis. The best way I know of to represent closeted/stealth trans characters is to give insight into the trans character’s POV as done with Addie. Another option is to go the “Dumbledore is gay” route and reveal the character’s trans status outside of the text. I’ve seen this in The Fated Sky by Mary Robinette Kowel, and while I prefer that over shoehorning in an outing scene, it can make the rep feel “tacked-on” or unsubstantiated.
Dear Mothman by Robin Gow (Mythical Beasts HM, trans male characters) - 4*
A very sweet book about grief, loneliness, acceptance, and growing up. I'm not generally a big fan of poetry-- I probably would've liked the story better in prose-- but I loved Noah's development, and getting attached to the characters is usually one of the most important factors in my enjoyment of any given book.
Trans author. The main character, Noah, is an autistic trans boy whose best friend Lewis (also a trans boy) recently died in a car crash. Noah and Lewis were out only to each other, so he has to navigate the loss of affirmation of his identity in addition to his grief. I didn't relate to everything about Noah's experience, but some of the details hit hard, like the way he feels like nobody but Lewis really knows who he is. I liked the connections/themes drawn around trans people as "monsters" ("It seems to me that 'monsters' are almost always misunderstood-- that 'monster' is what people become when other people are afraid of them for being different. People like me are called monsters sometimes."). I also liked how Noah and Lewis were friends before either of them realized they were trans-- I know it seems unlikely on the face of it, but it's a real phenomenon where unrealized queetrans people are drawn to each other without even knowing what they have in common.
The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas (Elemental Magic HM, trans male and nonbinary characters) - 4*
This is a solid YA book with some fun characters and fun superpowers. The plot is a bit predictable at times, but I'm interested to see how things progress with the next book.
Trans author. This book has a trans boy main character, several trans side characters including a nonbinary god, and a queernormative setting with mentions of readily available hormone therapy and top surgery. I liked how Teo was a role model for Xio— finding trans mentors/role models is really important to a lot of young and/or early-transition trans people, and I don't think we see that represented often enough. I liked how Teo's wing color was relevant to his transition, but I think the way it was resolved was a bit too convenient. I liked how Ocelo is allowed to be nonbinary and a jerk without those things being related. I know those of us who grew up with the queer-coded villain trope may be nervous or skeptical at the prospect, but variety is important for representation, and to me, that includes representing the fact that trans people can be assholes-- not because they're trans, but because they're human. It's also interesting that this is the third book I've read this year that includes a nonbinary deity (Bruising of Qilwa, Final Strife, Sunbearer Trials)-- perhaps it's the other side of the coin to the theme of nonbinary priests/monks from my last trans bingo.
The Wicked Bargain by Gabe Cole Novoa (Myths and Retellings HM, transmasc and nonbinary characters) - 4*
This is another solid YA book, and honestly very comparable to The Sunbearer Trials-- I read them back to back, and they would have benefited from more separation. I found Mar's hesitancy to use his powers frustrating (I'm glad Teo's hangups were resolved much earlier in his book). It made sense given his backstory, but it's just not a plotline I personally care for. I did like the Caribbean setting a lot though.
Trans author. The main character Mar prefers gender-neutral forms of address, but while feminine terms feel completely wrong for them, "man" is "not quite right, but [...] not entirely wrong" and boy "feels better-- good, even-- though it's not completely right, either." They're fine with he/him pronouns, and prefer to pass as a boy-- if the book were solely from another character's perspective, they would probably seem like a binary trans boy. Nonbinary transmasc guys like Mar are very common and very underrepresented. I've met a ton of trans people who use terms like "nonbinary man" or "demiboy," or who identify with terms like "guy"/"boy"/”boi” but not "man," yet nonbinary representation is still very much dominated by androgynous agendegenderqueer types or genderfluid/bigender types. In fact, the major secondary character Dami is a genderfluid demonio of the latter group (in this world, demons are humans who have sold their souls, so they're still human) with shapeshifting powers. They're characterized as being very attractive, but well, it's YA, so everybody of a certain age is attractive.
River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey (Queernorm HM, nonbinary character) - 4*
The story itself is solid, but it's the basic premise of hippo wranglers in the 1890s Louisiana bayou that really sells this.
Trans author. One of the main characters, Hero, is nonbinary. They're pretty cool, they get a nice romance. I forgot to write this review for several months so my goldfish brain is blanking on the details, but I remember liking the rep overall.
The Thirty Names of Night by Zeyn Joukhadar (Coastal or Island Setting HM, trans male and nonbinary characters) - 5*
It was a little hard to get into at first (I often struggle with books with multiple narratives), but the prose was lovely and I ultimately liked it a lot. I saw a review describing it as "intimate" and I thought that was a very fitting description.
Trans author. The main character is a transmasc person just beginning to socially transition, and he chooses his name (Nadir) partway through the book. His transition is a major plotline in this story, but it's far from the only thing going on in his life. There's also a secondary nonbinary character, Qamar, and a trans boy mentioned in the past (Laila's notebook) storyline, Ilyas. As mentioned, I always love seeing trans people connecting with each other. It was especially cool to see the connection between Nadir and Ilyas, because trans people in history are so often erased. I loved the descriptions of dissociation; it's often overlooked in favor of the more dramatic and overly painful forms for dysphoria. I like the way Nadir's birth name is always scribbled out, making it clear that it's purposefully hidden from the reader. I loved seeing him navigate his nonbinary identity ("I want to tell Reem that maybe I am something there is no word for [instead of a boy], but I am afraid that I am already invisible enough to her as it is")-- he's similar to Mar from The Wicked Bargain in that he publicly comes out as a boy but privately feels nonbinary. I love the themes of names and naming, both in a trans context and in a cultural/immigrant context.
Flowerheart by Catherine Bakewell (Druid HM, trans female and nonbinary characters) - 3*
Well, it's another YA novel with a magical protagonist afraid of their own powers. I'm really not a fan of this "super powerful but hindered by anxiety/trauma" trope, and in general I find it frustrating to read anxious/illogical thought patterns. It also just didn't hit the cozy vibe as much as I wanted.
Clara's favorite former teacher, Madam Ben Ammar, and her apprentice Robin are both trans. Neither of them gets a ton of screen time, but Robin mentions to Clara that they're glad that they have a trans mentor to relate with. On one hand, I like that even with the trans representation being so peripheral, we still get two characters with a hint at how their shared experiences affect their mentoapprentice dynamic. On the other hand, the whole interaction just feel weird and stilted and poorly executed overall. It also feels iffy to be learning that Madam Ben Ammar is trans secondhand from Robin when it's not entirely clear if Clara knew about her trans status beforehand, but that's partly projection on my part. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt and assume that this isn't an issue for the characters in question within the queernormative setting of the book, but in the real world, outing people like that is a big faux pas unless you have explicit permission from the trans person in question.
System Collapse by Martha Wells (Robots HM, genderless non-human characters) - 4*
I struggled with getting back into this because it picks up right from the end of Network Effect, and it had been a while since I read that. Other than that, this was a great addition to the Murderbot series, and I loved getting to see some of that slow burn character development coming through.
Murderbot is a genderless robot-human construct. I think it's in a similar boat to the angel in When the Angels Left the Old Country in that it's not really great representation for human gender diversity, because it's not clear how much of its gender (or lack thereof) comes from its non-human side.
Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire (Sequel HM, trans male character) - 3*
I've enjoyed most of the other Wayward Children books but had been putting this one off because I wasn't a big fan of Jack and Jill or The Moors in general. It was about what I expected. It was fun enough and quick enough that it was worth reading just for the completionist in me, but it felt gratuitous.
One of the side characters, Kade, is a trans boy who has been featured in several Wayward Children books so far. He doesn't do a ton in this book, but I like him as a character. McGuire has stated (link in comments) that she plans to write his origin story, but Kade is a boy/man "who will honestly and unflinchingly say that once, he was a little girl," so the beginning of his story will have a lot of misgendering and deadnaming, and given "as little good trans rep as we have," she doesn't want to fuck it up. Some trans people (like Kade) do refer to their past selves as their assigned gender, most trans people prefer either gender-affirming or gender-neutral language even when talking about the past. So I understand McGuire's reservations, especially as a cis author who may not get the automatic benefit of the doubt that a trans author might. That said, I've read enough of her work and enough different trans stories in general that I personally would trust her to tell Kade's story well.

2024.03.21 12:24 Wildroses2009 Goose Bingo Row Three

Yes, I did it. Rows one and two in my profile, rows four and five forthcoming.
Mother Goose: Read a book about a storyteller. Despite my vow to spend no money I did purchase this for all of two dollars at the Coles charity bookstall: Soraya the Storyteller by Rosanne Hawke
Honk Mode: Storyteller must be your Mum. Absolutely nobody has written a book about my mother.
I am stretching the definition of fantasy here as 12 year old Soraya is an Afghani Asylum Seeker living in modern day Australia on a temporary protection visa, but as the title suggests Soraya processes her trauma through fantasy stories. She listens to the Afghani folk tales told to them by Khala, an older woman and fellow Afghani refugee who has moved into her house to look after her and her two younger siblings. They do still have their mother but she is still distraught over the horrors of losing her husband and three older children to the Taliban and escaping. Soraya also copes by writing stories including one of her own family, reimagined as a fairy tale with a happy ending that Soraya herself is not guaranteed. Over the course of the story she processes her own grief and trauma while settling into Australian life with all of its good people, bad people and prejudiced people. But the fact remains she is on a temporary protection visa and could lose it all in three years. But it was a story of hope and resilience after suffering terrible darkness, and I do recommend it to adults as well as children.

Good for the Goose, Good for the Gander: Read a book that deals with equality. A.J. Lancaster's A Rake of His Own.
Honk Mode: The book isn't set in a patriarchal society. Does 50% count? Human society is patriarchal but Fae society isn't.
Chronologically the fifth of the Stariel books but also functions as a stand alone. This book features Rake, Prince of the Faerie Court of Ten Thousand Spires and Marius Valstar the post graduate university botanist. There was a strong attraction between the two in the quartet but they need their own volume to properly resolve it while also solving a murder involving fae magic in Marius’s university. Marius is also trying to deal with the problems of his new telepathy powers. I justified this as ‘themes of equality’ as part of the problems the lovers overcome is their two cultures, two species and two pasts. The human society frowns upon homosexuality and there are laws against it, albeit rarely enforced, which means Marius has a lot of internalized shame. Faery society does not see a difference between homosexual and heterosexual behaviour, which causes Rake a lot of confusion. Faeries cannot lie or break their word. Humans can, which makes Rake feel he is vulnerable in this pairing. Rake has had many lovers but never been in love, while Marius has only had one lover he loved which ended badly. Another interesting angle is that both Rake and Marius have experienced their siblings unexpectedly taking noble roles above them recently. Both are still adjusting to the new reality and relationships this entails. We also get more exposure to the low fae in this book, as opposed to the high fae which tend to be closer to human like Rake. Low Fae tend to be more animalistic as well as less intelligent and powerful. Rake believes it is the duty of High Fae like himself to take care of them as a way of balancing the scales between them, which he takes seriously. Recommended for romance, fantasy and murder mystery fans.

Honk: Featuring an Eldritch Horror bent on destroying all life. Ben Aaronovitch's False Value. To avoid spoilers, I will simply state that I'll die on the hill that the eldritch horror is just that, and while it only wanted to destroy some specific life that’s probably as close as I’ll get without spending money.
Honk Mode: Not a non fiction book on geese. Um...no. Definitely not. Completely fictional.
A good entry point for newcomers to the Rivers of London world as the major plot points of the previous ones with the Faceless Man have wrapped up and we are on to new parts of policeman Peter Grant’s life, personal and professional. Personally he continues to adjust to life as the partner of the Beverely Brook River Goddess, currently five months pregnant with his twins. Professionally he is working undercover as security at a tech billionaires place as both his recent suspension and his position at the Folly, the London polices liaison with magic and the supernatural, make him a perfect plant. The Rivers of London series is quintessential urban fantasy, magic and supernatural beings alongside the mundanity of regular police work and investigation. Aaronovitch is also a master at character voice. I heartily recommend the series to everyone, especially fans of urban fantasy and crime.

Goosebumps: Read a Goosebumps book or fanfiction. R.L. Stine's Attack of the Graveyard Ghouls.
Honk Mode: Read the Goosebumps AO3 fanfic with the most content warnings. Nope. I wanted to wallow in childhood nostalgia, not adulthood trauma.
I read quite a lot of Goosebumps when I was a tween. Stine doesn’t bother doing much worldbuilding and reasoning why the spooky things happen but that isn’t what he’s going for. He’s just trying to get spooky scenes and imagery out juxtaposed with the mundane problems of ordinary children (school, bullies, annoying families, crushes). I once described them to my grandmother who was asking for advice about whether some donated Goosebumps should be sold or dumped at her Christian College book sale (debate was apparently raging) that they were books for children who wanted to be scared without actually being scared. And that’s what Stine delivers. A simple prose experience for children in the changeover period between being too old for picture books but too young for adult novels. And the plot had two whole twists that I didn’t see coming a mile off. I do seem to remember the ones I read as a kid ending with life going back to normal around a lot of oblivious adults, but considering the main character’s body had burned down a house, attacked multiple family members and caused lots of property damage while being taken over by a ghoul I think they are going to have a lot of trouble going back to normal life.

Silly Goose: The main character is figuratively a silly goose. Suzy Goose and the Christmas Star by Peter Horacek
Honk Mode: The main character is literally a silly goose. Yes.
Suzy Goose is the dumbest goose in fiction as well as the silliest. She thinks a bright star in the sky would look perfect on the Christmas tree so she decides to go get it. Even though she has wings she attempts to get this star by sliding down a hill, jumping off three progressively higher places, then walking to the point where she gets hopelessly lost so her friends have to make a huge noise to call her back home. Then when she gets there the star has naturally moved to the top of the bloody tree anyway! Illustration wise Horacek has an excellent sense of colouring and backgrounds, but I’m not as keen on his rendition of barnyard animals (apart from the expressions which are delightful).

2024.03.15 03:06 CalicoIda The First Great Saunders Rebellion

While I made a post about the second rebellion, those of you might be asking: What happened during the first and how it caused chaos for the second. This information will be eventual hype for remaking one of my earlier GuP fanfictions as I felt like the information regarding it is inaccurate and with the information that did come out would make for a good remake. Plus, another reason for remaking it is that I felt that it was kind of rushed and I didn't know how to write some of the characters in back in 2020. Now a few years in and some experience under my belt, it's time I say we go back to give something shotty a complete fix, some of the details will be changed around. This war was mentioned in Red, White Revolution as the Saunders-Chi-ha-tan war. But this one goes into more details about this specific war.
Saunders and the 62nd Sensha-Do tournament:
Saunders during the 62nd Sensha-Do Tournament was in shambles, many businesses were destroyed, and the populace was left in ruin because of the civil war the year previous. The victorious Reds were stabbed in the back when Renta Tsuji, the most corrupt man within the entirety of MEXT, placed Kay as the leader of Saunders once more. The people were outraged by this, but they were too exhausted to do anything about it. The students fled Saunders in their droves, many of them heading to Pravda while the graduates headed either to university or ran off to Siberia in the hopes of never being found again.
Kay's vice commanders of Himari and Yuri Nakamura were very hard to get along. While they agreed to much of Kay's changes, they didn't know how they wanted to proceed with them. Himari and Yuri wished to restore their old powers as former aristocrats. Kay wanted to proceed to implement the American Doctrine to Saunders. Yuri also wished for hair dye to be regularly available along with unlimited soy and chai coffee and Avocado toast. They also much like Kay wished for male students to come in and roam freely and intermingle with the students. They were hoping for the incoming freshmen were to go along and rally behind the school and Kay. Things weren't going to go according to plan.
The American Doctrine
The American doctrine focuses on the core aspects of being able to say whatever you wish, the right to carry whatever weapons you wished, the right to vote on anything and individual liberties. To most students, they were split on these policies. Some endorsed them, others opposed them. Yuri and Himari thought that Kay didn't go far enough in the individual part. They wanted to be able to sleep with as many boys as they could and cancel any consequences that might come with that so they could keep doing it more.
The food of Saunders would be all American so that no foreign entities got in to "Spoil" the diet. This meant banning all vegetables and most fruits if they were eaten raw. Anything was considered "Unamerican" was banned. Yuri demanded more rights for the minorities of Saunders which was shut down by Kay for going against her ideas. However, the biggest group that opposed all of this were the first years.
Introduction of the Menace with Blue Eyes
"Saunders students are some of the most mean-spirited people I have ever met. Often drones to a queen. They preach on some of the most destructive vices to society to invite their crazed investors to build some of the unhealthiest places to eat. I can't have a single day where they don't talk about Freedom and individual rights where I can act like a normal student and not get invited to a party which they host every day. The Hypocrisy of Kay is as thick as the fattest Americans." Brook Taylor
Brook Taylor was a student of unknown origin. Her paperwork claimed she was from Alabama but appearance and behavior wise was anything but that. Brook was two things according to Naomi, a collectivist and a staunch Communist. Brook said that life was on Saunders was appalling, there was nothing to read except for what Kay had approved. Television was in every dorm room. Plus, there was nothing to eat. Brook said: "You give the school freedom, but you gave nobody a voice." Naomi agreed to that and tried her best to make herself vice commander to roll back a lot of Kay's policies to make the students themselves a home.
Brook was intelligent for a student, excelling in math, reading and geography and was forced into the Sensha-Do team when she wanted to take up music as an extra-curricular and a club. She never showed up to any of her classes as the academic year went on was the fact that she was mostly done with the system and spent much of her time outdoors in the parks of the school. The students there were fed up with Saunders in a similar way she was. The students also longed for the return to the old ways which Brook took a big liking in. Whether it would be a return to monarchism or implementing something similar or exactly like Pravda. One thing that united them was the white, blue, red flag of homeland.
The Pravda incident
Pravda Girls High School had unfinished business with Saunders. After being back-stabbed, the Pravda students begin to make moves on Saunders in order to get the school shut down once more. Saunders Sensha-Do team consisting of just Sherman tanks was a mixed bag as many of the students didn't know what they were doing or what they were supporting. When Saunders told Pravda to get out of their business in order to provoke them. Pravda took the bait and launched its attack. Saunders got decimated in the incoming attack and Himari as well as Yuri sent trucks and threw themselves at the Pravda BT Tanks to destroy them. That did nothing despite how many tanks they were able to take out. Kay said that she would do this for fun but Brook... she was most likely traumatized by this entire event.
"I never seen students so callously throw themselves at the enemy and blow themselves up in the name of the American death machine. I just wanted to live." Brook Taylor
Even with Pravda's victory in the match, it was clear that some of the Saunders students were starting to see Sensha-Do not as fun but machine that throws students into the meat grinder and grinds them out into mush. Himari was quick to capitalize on this by manipulating the students that Kay wasn't going to give them help that they needed, and they needed to rebel for an all-inclusive and diverse school. They planned this behind Kay's back as the 62nd Sensha-Do tournament took place. Saunders got to the Semi-Finals until they were against Kuromorimine. Alisa decided to cheat the rules by radio tapping to lure Saunders into a trap. Brook who was with Alisa, decided to destroy the radio that Alisa was using to not cheat. Instead of getting praise for following the rules, Kay yelled at Brook for destroying the radio in one of the schools. This had caused Brook to once again melt away. It was more than enough. The bomb was about to explode.
The Freedom Lumber Company
While all of this was going on, Kay had made her move and began scheming with Himari and Yuri. In violation against Chi-Ha-Tan, Kay had set up the Freedom Lumber Company in Manchuria. The whole point of the lumber company was to give money to lobby the Americans politicians to put conservatives in power for the next eight years. Chi-Ha-Tan noticed this and demanded that Kay leave Manchuria and the Yellow Sea. Yuri Nakamura meanwhile was beginning to terrorize the locals with the most deranged things and giving lessons of rainbow flags. The lumber company began to fray as Kay left as part of the scheming. Eventually the tension of Saunders had reached a boiling point. The school was going to explode.
The Battle of Port Arthur
Saunders blew up one night before summer vacation. The students fed up with Kay rebelled and smashed Kay's soda cellar thinking of it being chains that held the people down. Kay was forced to flee with Alisa and Naomi. The school had fallen to Yuri and Himari and in an interesting turn of events. Yuri betrayed Himari over who should take the lead. Brook meanwhile began to see the relationship break down; she was in for a rough time.
Kay had gathered the students from many schools and told them about the situation. Everyone except for Pravda (As they were celebrating their victory over Kuromorimine in the finals and thought of the rebellion as a complete waste of time.) Only their former middle school ally from the year before and SSISSN would side with Yuri. Everyone else sided with Kay. The plan was simple, contain the threat in Manchuria while the army closed in and prevent the school ships leaving by sea. Kay and her students will land in Korea and begin the march up to Manchuria.
The Battle of Yalu River
Manchuria was not an easy place to conduct a war. Both sides lacked the knowledge of the terrain they were fighting in. Plus, heavy rainfall and flash floods were a hazard to both sides. Chi-Ha-Tan who had scouted the area before, were the ones with the knowledge about Manchuria's geography. When both armies met at Yalu river, the first land battle of the war had begun. Yuri's army was in conflict with the locals who demanded that they have everything given to them without giving anything in return. The students used this opportunity to build multiple bridges across the Yalu river to confuse the enemy. Yuri didn't know which bridge to destroy and this turned out to be her undoing, Kay's entire army only crossed one of them and they managed to get behind Yuri. In the battles to follow, casualties here were light. Kay lost 100 students and Yuri suffered 270 casualties. Worse was to follow.
At sea, things weren't fairing much better. Anchovy's little brother Antonio had taken command of the fleet and decided on a course of action to destroy the ships that Yuri had converted into gun boats. He hoped Yuri was panicking and sent his ships to try to break the morale at sea. Yuri was ready and used the gun boats plus the shore batteries at Port Arthur to begin firing at Antonio's fleet. The next morning, Antonio tried another tactic, he moved two school ships behind Yuri's fleet and began to bombard Port Arthur away from the coastal batteries. Even though some damage was dealt, the coastal batteries turned and began firing at the ships, Antonio was forced to withdraw.
In order to prevent Yuri's ships from escaping, Antonio ordered the laying of sea mines to deter Yuri from staging a break out. Yuri spotted this and attempted a sortie but this was a trap as five school ships ambushed them and she was forced to turn back. On the way back two ships were struck by mines. One of them was damaged and the other one sank thus taking away Yuri's best ship and her most trusted admiral she had placed. Yuri took over and mined off possible bombardment positions, that worked out as two schools ships struck mines and suffered minor damage. They held back to have repairs done to their hulls.
The battle of Nanshan
The next battle of the war took place on the two mile wide territory of Nanshan. Yuri and Brook had been split off from command and thus they had no direct means of contacting each other. The school army stationed there was attacked on the first day which they had managed to repulse and cut down large numbers of students. However, on the next day, Yuri had failed to send her reserves to the front which allowed Kay's army to break through and take the victory by over running them. This is where the real disaster had happened. Some groups of students refused to fall back and were captured while others routed. In fact, the destruction of an ammunition dump was carried out so incompetently that thirty people were killed in the explosion. Shortly after the capture of Nanshan, Olivia Kaya would arrive to lead the capture of Port Arthur. Kay's army would suffer 620 casualties with Yuri's army taking 162 in return.
The Battle of Te-li-Ssu
The rift between Yuri and Brook was getting worse. Port Arthur had plenty of supplies to tie down Kay's army for as long as possible and wait for Brook to come to relieve her. However, Yuri began to terrorize the students at Port Arthur as if she was their queen. Sending students to the front and teaching them what Himari and she preached which caused a rift in her own ranks. Plus, when it came to the navy, Yuri took the best of their plans and chucked them out of the window and implemented the most self-defeating strategy. She would take the gunboats and schools to break out and leave those at Port Arthur and Brook's army in Manchuria stranded with no supplies. Yuri had even ignored orders by Brook to leave Port Arthur with the troops and put them in Manchuria. Yuri ordered Brook to attack but Brook knew her army was in no shape to conduct an offensive. Orders were orders however and Brook was forced to attack.
Brook's army was met at Te-Li-Ssu where it was easily defeated. Brook's army suffered 347 casualties to a measly 116. And to make matters worse, a Russian fleet came down to the Yellow Sea to investigate what was going on. Worried that this fleet was going to give Yuri the opportunity to stage a breakout, the fleets met at The Battle of the Yellow Sea. The Admiral of the Russian fleet Vitgeft was killed in action in an inconclusive engagement, throwing Yuri's fleet into confusion. Most ships retreated back to port while a few attempted to break out with they were interned by the Russian ships.
Dishonor and incompetence at Port Arthur
Olivia Kaya's army was forced to launch its attack on Port Arthur but this will evolve into one of the worst trench battles that the schools would have to face. Olivia's students were forced to attack through fields of firecracker mines, barbed wire and improvised traps. All the while, Yuri's students poured artillery, machine gun and rifle fire from their protected forts. Hundreds of students suffered as casualties in each futile assault. Night attacks didn't fair much better as the students found the attackers with search lights, flares and star shells. Despite this, Olivia was forced to continue feeding students into the meat grinder.
In one of the most remarkable efforts of determination from the middle schoolers to take the city. Olivia caught a group of officers complaining about the poor performance of their regiments and said: "As officers, you shouldn't complain. Take matters into your own hands." These officers would then put on their families Samurai armor, picked up their katanas and charged across no-man's land to the enemy trenches. They were immediately cut down by the stupefied machine gunners in the enemy trench. By the time the week was over. Olivia's army would suffer 1,600 casualties. That figure rises to 3,000 if you included starvation as many of them were suffering from lack of food and had to be taken off the front to eat thus affecting overall performance. Olivia Kaya was also suffering from starvation. But she refused to eat as she would wish to suffer alongside her troops as the leader of her army. Something had to give away.
Liaoyang and Shaho
Kay would lead her army into Manchuria. As she advanced further north, her supply lines were stretched thin. Combined with appalling rainfall, her army began to suffer. Sick and weak students started to fall by the wayside only to be washed away in flash floods. Brook's army in Liaoyang wasn't handling the weather any better with most of the students stationed indoors while Yuri and Brook continued to argue. Yuri ordered Brook to launch more offensives to relieve Port Arthur while Brook pointed out that her army was in very poor shape to do so. Brook forced Yuri to strike a compromise and fight Kay's army where she stood. Brook's army wasn't in as bad of a position as the thought it was. Poor intelligence led Brook to believe she was outnumbered when in reality, she had the numbers advantage on her side. Plus, Port Arthur was a meat grinder, wearing down Olivia's army so Brook was able to attack. At The Battle of Liaoyang, Kay sent entire formations forward to watch them get gunned down by machine guns, artillery and in some cases, friendly fire. Although Brook was holding her ground, the fighting was exhausting her troops as fast as the enemy. Brook made the decision to pull back to inner defensive lines at Liaoyang. Kay believed Brook was retreating and pressed hard to not let her get away. At first the withdrawal was carried out in good order, but some units withdrew from the battle completely without Brook's permission to do so. Rather than face destruction of her entire army, Brook ordered the army to retreat to Mukden. While Kay won the battle, her losses were much worse at 2,292 casualties to Brook's 1,911 casualties.
Brook's army continued to grow due to better logistics and more volunteers from the local population. As Brook learned of the deteriorating situation at Port Arthur, Brook decided to launch another relief offensive to lift the siege. Even with superior numbers, this wasn't enough. The resulting battle of Shaho left Brook with 4,135 casualties to Kay's 2,113. The only good news for Brook was the news that Yuri had left the war completely and ran off to Shanghai to catch the first train to Paris.
The Fall of Port Arthur
The siege of Port Arthur hadn't gotten any less bloody since Olivia's assaults. Over the course of a six-day period. Olivia's army lost 480 students and gained very little ground. However, the siege would turn in her favor as she received fresh reinforcements and heavy coastal artillery. This allowed her to storm the vitally important 203-meter hill. A central position overlooking the harbor. But even the capture of the hill came at the cost of an appalling 1,400 casualties. After the capture, Olivia placed an observer at the top of the hill which guided artillery and naval fire on the surviving ships. Thus, accomplishing the destruction of a navy by a land army. When Port Arthur fell to Olivia, the students were surprised that many students had surrendered as Yuri ran off like a coward and they didn't want to continue fighting. Plus, the armory and food storage were stocked completely as they still had months of supplies left. Olivia wasn't complaining about this, she needed all the help she could get as her victory resulted in a total of over 9,000 casualties. There was no time to mourn for the losses however, Olivia was moving her army to help Kay out.
The Battle of Mukden
Finally free from Yuri Nakamura's meddling, Brook launched another offensive against Kay. This one looked promising with Brook enjoying her largest numerical advantage yet. Her goal was the town of Sandepu but Brook's army was blunted by heavy snow, poor intelligence and the girl she put in charge of the offensive own incompetence. When she reported the capture of the town, Brook pointed to her that she captured the wrong area and Kay had sent her reserves to reinforce Sandepu. Rather than cutting her losses, she launched another offensive that would result in 600 more casualties. When Brook finally gave up and ordered a withdrawal. Kay then launched a counterattack and inflicted horrific losses on Brook's retreating army. When this was over, Kay had suffered 900 casualties while Brook suffered 2,000 casualties. Sandepu was inconclusive but the girl went over to Kay, reported that she was a hero, reported that Brook went behind her back to sabotage her efforts and she puts all the blame on Brook.
Then to make matters worse the middle school allies suffered a revolution which withdrew large numbers of students from the front as they had to return home to deal with the unrest leaving Brook all on her own. Although Kay was winning, she was exhausted, out of money and her American investors threatened to pull out if she didn't end the uprising in the next two weeks. Kay launched an ambitious plan to encircle Brook's entire army and wipe it out by launching an attack to Mukden. Brook had planned the offensive to begin 3 days from now, but Kay beat her to the punch and launched her offensive the next day. The Battle of Mukden would rage all day and all night even into the next day. Efforts focused on the east where they drew reinforcements from the west and once the west was weakened, Olivia's army attacked the weak western flank. This forced Brook to order a general retreat. They maintained good order at first but as Kay's forces closed in and fired on the closely packed ranks, they panicked and left everything behind to escape on foot.
In fact, the one thing Brook was good at during the rebellion was organizing retreats. She seldom left students and equipment behind. This was why Brook Taylor's army grew so large despite losing so many battles. The Battle of Mukden almost put a black mark on that record. When the battle dissolved into a rout, heavy equipment was left behind and Brook along with 20,000 students were captured in Mukden. However, the bulk of those loyal to Yuri Nakamura had got away, leaving much of the Manchurians behind. Kay got her victory but not the victory she had desired. The Battle of Mukden resulted in 7,750 casualties on Kay's end and 28,835 casualties on Brook's end. However, one last battle was going to rage at sea.
The Battle of Tsushima
When the Russian Pacific fleet had been attacked. The Russians sent the Baltic fleet to the Pacific as reinforcements. The school ships would quickly pick this up and contacted the Japanese Navy for help. Eventually the Russian Navy tried to reach Vladivostok by the shortest route through Tsushima. The Japanese Navy was waiting for them as the Russians had sailed 18,000 miles around the world. The school ships tried to outmaneuver the Russians which the latter saw as a sign of weakness and tried to exploit it. The Russians would however botch their navy trying to exploit this. When the two fleets engaged, the Mikasa was hit from shell fire due to their poor positioning. Eventually positioning was corrected and the ships began firing back. The Admiral's flag ship got the worst of it with the admiral suffering multiple wounds but still ordering the ship to fire until the very end. This battle also resulted in the destruction of the school ship Kamchatka which ended up sinking. (It wasn't Japanese Torpedo boats that sunk the Kamchatka; I swear.) Despite the Admiral's best efforts, the Baltic fleet was decimated with only three ships out of thirty-two making it to Vladivostok. The other twenty-nine ships were sunk, scuttled, captured or otherwise lost. The Japanese would only lose 3 torpedo boats.
Results
"The United States should have been defeated in a war by Japan in 1904-1905." Brook Taylor
With the rebellion finally over, the schools took a tally of their losses. Himari, Yuri and Brook were all court marshalled for their roles in the rebellion. Himari and Yuri stated that they were the ones in the right and that Kay should have left at the first opportunity. Brook meanwhile said she believed that the school was a lie and only fought alongside to topple Kay. If she won, she would have to deal with Himari and Yuri by toppling them too if she was to get what she wanted. Himari and Yuri were expelled from Saunders while Brook was forced to go back to America to finish her education there. Brook distraught by the losses she took, and the punishment tried to put an end to it all, wishing to join the ranks in the afterlife. That wouldn't be the case as she was found out by students from another ship and when she told what had happened, they requested her to have a school transfer to stay in Japan. Brook Taylor was sent to Pravda. Brook would eventually get her ultimate revenge on Himari and Yuri by executing them herself as she thought their deaths were the ultimate punishment for what they did to her. Katyusha was delighted that Brook learned to stop being afraid of her mistakes.
If this will be turned into GuP with the girls as balls with their schools on them this will be what I will have playing in the background:

2024.03.02 13:29 Jesse_D_James Warriors Blip

Hey, so I made a post a 1 ½ weeks ago and just wanted to update you guys i am working on my fanfict of What If the Marvel Snap happened in the warrior cats universe.
I have decided to place the snap at the end of book 2 from the New Prophecy as I want to use MCU lore to describe the threes powers and events plus I am most familiar with the first few arcs. Plus after looking at the timeline on the wiki, the dusted would all be returned just before arc 5.
How i would change the end of Moonrise with the blip being involved
I am working on rereading the series and just finished moonrise, starting dawn now. Trying to get a refresher on all the cats. I also plan to involve a small group being sent by SandStorm in Dawn to check on and retrieve Skyclan, bringing all 5 clans to the lake from the beginning. Hoping that can appease whatever took half the cats.

2024.01.16 21:48 Diulicin_Sona Songs I think Yondu would vibe with

Hello, All. I often see questions and posts here asking for music recommendations that feel Guardians-ish. I write GotG fanfiction and make playlists for each character of songs I think they would listen to, and play them as I write. I know that’s not an original thing to do, but I thought for funsies I would drop my Yondu song suggestions here. I’d love if y’all wanted to comment your own suggestions, or maybe discover some good songs if you are having a music dry spell lol. And if you want more characters’ lists, let me know :)

2023.12.21 18:10 BrookieD820 Your OTP find themselves under the mistletoe.

I stole this idea from the Fanfiction sub but it's basically the couple you're writing about find themselves under the mistletoe at Christmas time. What happens?
Thomas is so fixated on his work he doesn't realize it until he bumps it with his head and looks up, first wondering how it got there. Brooke is so nonobservant (real life Brooke is too) she doesn't even notice it until he smiles down at her and points at it. Without even looking to see how many people are around, he closes his notebook, reaches down and kisses her slowly before pulling away and pulls her into a hug. "Merry Christmas, my love."

2023.12.10 15:10 Outside-Sea-6733 Time goes by

The reason I used to love Germany
Several days (I wrote it on Aug 14th) have gone by and I still care that this comment https://www.reddit.com/polandball/comments/15b8ff7/comment/jtqrb3u/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 (written on July 27) (I want to comment on the original post, but couldn’t) got some downvotes and almost got folded, which does hurt me. I swear to Jesus I'm not a Nazi nor a neo-Nazi, all these songs were released before Nazi Germany's rule period and even Die Gedanken sind frei(Thoughts are Free https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Gedanken_sind_frei) was banned by the Nazi authorities, and I wonder if people are thinking of Hitler because of the heil and the seig in Heil dir im Siegerkranz https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heil_dir_im_Siegerkranz, but actually the heil was a salute to Emperor Wilhelm II, and of course that doesn't mean I support the restoration of Hohenzollern, I just like Germany in any era especially Brandenburg and Prussia except the Nazi era and the East German era. I must confess that I may not have a single drop of German blood in me, and if my comments come across as Nazi that has nothing to do with any German.
Originally I was not a fan of Germany and thought the country was militaristic and evil. Imagine that I am a woman born in 2000 in an distant country, China (and my birthday is October 2nd, which is close to German Unification Day, October 3, what a coincidence), I started to get in touch with the Internet in 2008 or 2009, at that time, out of my natural love for the occult, I searched for some of the religions and myths of various countries, and then I only cared about the history and the entertainment industry of the range of my continent, for the Europe I do not know much, except for Christianity, Michelangelo, Die Lore-Ley https://www.reddit.com/Poetry/comments/16nlxgj/poem_die_loreley_the_loreley_by_heinrich_heine_t by Heinrich Heine, English songs, foreign literary and artistic works and scientists which mentioned in textbooks and my encyclopedia, etc.
And as for Germany, I was even more aware only at best of Arminius, Heine, and a poem by Coleridge called Cologne Beethoven, Mozart, Bach and The Sorrows of Young Werther by Goethe, and to make matters even worse, Alphonse Daudet‘s Last Class https://xpressenglish.com/last-class/ appeared in our middle high school literature textbook, which gave me a very bad impression of Germany, It's obviously that the article's appearance was selected for literature textbooks with a political purpose, designing to stir up patriotism, but if we follow this logic of the Education Bureau, what about the land that them once lost to other countries? Other than that, our history textbooks mentioned Heinrich IV's walk to Canossa, German Peasants War,The Protestant Reformation of Martin Luther, Silesian weavers' uprising of 1844, the bad things Nazis have done, the Potsdam Declaration, the founding of the German II Reich and so on, and beyond that, I had no additional, let alone motivated knowledge of Germany.
Then in the summer after high school ended in 2017, I started to pay more attention to some Western things, actually European and American movies and other things in the entertainment world, and at that time it was the first time that I watched two things related to World War II - Hacksaw Ridge and a Harry Potter Fanfiction using World War II as a parody theme (not AU) named The Peacock Era (There's very sparse mention of Germany in this novel, and I only remember a good-natured soldier named Friedrich, who seems to be a pilot. I don't remember it clearly and I don't want to verify, cause I'm afraid of read this twice.).
After that I had a dream that I was a German woman in WWII and pregnant, and my husband was a German officer who was going to war tomorrow. He took me to the department store to buy some milk and promised that when he came back he would never go to war again (which of course didn't happen). He never returned and his life ended that year forever. I seemed to love him so much that I would have gone after him if I had not been pregnant with the posthumous child who was the continuation of our bloodline. After that I was widowed for life. More than twenty years later, I was sitting at a table , the setting sun shone through the window and lighted the room, and there was a young man with blonde hair standing beside me and that was my son. I called him Friedrich and looked at a picture of my husband while he was young (actually, he was always young and had no chance of aging). The son's name was given in memory of his father.
This dream was really a film-like scenario, maybe one day I will draw this dream in the form of Polandball (Of course, the Nazi ball will be drawn with black-white-red flag and the time background will be faded so as not to be seen as promoting Nazism. Edit: it's a idea on Aug 14th, I no longer have the stupid mind since Aug 22th, for I realized that if I did a comic about this dream, then I'm actually whitewashing and disrespecting the people who lost their lives in the clutches of the Nazis. I feel so ashamed.). Because of this dream (I must emphasize that's because I love myself. To be honest, I dreamed a German soldier (Solid blonde hair, dressed in a sky-green or gray-green, bean green shirt, in fact like what Wilhelm Winter wore in Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter in a scene, his face was not my favorite type of very handsome without a hint of softness, and I was a bit disappointed to find that his features were rather soft, how can I say it, it seemed as if his face was a blend of half very masculine and half very feminine, the feminine part of his face reminded me of Casper von Bülow, an actor in the German TV series Druck, who I didn't like his face anyway. He sits in a grassy meadow in a forest by a mist-strewn watery swamp, looking up at the sky and into the distance, wondering about the future of Germany.) on May 4, 2021, and I almost forget it cause I know it's may during an unspeakable era and maybe it's him who I erased from my mind out of fear of condemnation. I only found out that dream in 2021 because of the electronic notes on my old phone.) I started to learn about Germany, its history, music, philosophy and all its glories, and then I started to love Germany and have viewed it as a habit. I admit that I used to think that I liked Germany whenever it was, but then I realised that the Nazis were very evil and I couldn't love Germany without distinguishing between right and wrong. A few days ago I said that I love Germany more than anything, at this moment in time I just put Jesus and the Archangel Uriel before Germany.
This dream is the reason why I like Germany, and if it didn't really happen to me but someone else telling me about it would also be quite speechless for me, I see it as liking Germany because I think I was German myself (at the time I thought maybe it was a past life or a parallel universe haha). But that's a point that can't be specifically mentioned to strangers, and it's bad enough to say that I dreamt I was a German woman during WWII and had a husband who was a Nazi officer, and even if removing the man, just saying that it was a woman who was born in the last century, is probably a bit suspicious as well. I'd have to lie and say I suddenly started learning about Germany and slowly fell in love with it as I was exposed to it, haha. And actually I remember a lot of stuff about the dream, his looks and that he probably went to the Eastern Front, so since then I've hated Russia, which I didn't originally hate at least not that much (I've rather disliked the UK since I was a kid as I felt like it was a coward didn't good at wars but always creating conflicts everywhere). Also in that dream I was maybe from Cologne or Münster, I don't remember, I feel like I was seeing tombstones or something in the dreams. So when I mention the places I like and want to visit the most, I'll mention those two, and the rest are Hamburg and Karlsruhe, Hamburg because of its interesting name, and Karlsruhe because I think it's quite an elegant name in Chinese.
Furthermore, I have to say that whether this so-called husband was in a past life or a past life in some other universe or my brain weaved a dream based on the information it received, Nazism has nothing to do with me. And this so-called widowhood to death behaviour may have something to do with the way the me of the time viewed the idea of relationships, for example the 17 years old me thought that I needed to be widowed to death if my loving husband died, whereas the sometimes radical feminist me thought that I didn't need any man, or even when I wasn't a radical feminist (and now I'm probably a liberal feminist) I felt that when not in love with my husband, I could quickly choose to divorce, so why must I be widowed until I die, and also there are times when I am nearly 100% lesbian and have been a lesbian (Of course, the percentages vary at different times, which does not mean that I am all purely lesbian throughout the 3 years) for perhaps a cumulative 3 years of my nearly 23 years of life so far, my thoughts are very fluid.
I've had a few plans for my English name such as Patricia (the Christian name I wished for because I think pronunciation of this name is beautiful when I was leaning towards Catholicism in 2017-2019, now I haven't figured out which denomination of Christianity I should follow. In fact, I've recently returned to Christianity because I admire Archangel Uriel so much and I'm afraid of going down some not-quite-right path because of it.
And for Catholicism, which for the longest time I've considered to be very corrupting, for example, in ancient times Germany was seen as the cow of the Papacy, in the documentary Die Deutschen there was an episode(Die Deutschen II (05) - Thomas Müntzer und der Krieg der Bauern https://youtu.be/DPuD1gGE5S8?t=1006) in which the peasants were smashing up a church and one person said don't do it because it's consecrated to God and the other personn replied it's done with your money too(16:46—17:09 Müntzers Anhänger verweigern Abagaben an ein katolisches Kloster. Sie stürmen eine Kapelle und plündern sie aus. Mit Gewalt holen sie zurück, was sie als ihr Eigentum betrachten. “Halt, das ist doch Gott geweiht. ” “Ja, und dir im Schweiße deines Angesichts abgepresst.”, which means Müntzer's followers refuse to make contributions to a Catholic monastery. They storm a chapel and loot it. By force they take back what they consider to be their property."Wait, this is dedicated to God. " "Yes, and extorted from you by the sweat of your brow.").
I deeply appreciate Thomas Müntzer who in my eyes was far greater than Luther in the palace of the princes, but that doesn't mean that I'm an Anabaptist, and it's fair to say that I appreciate a lot of the idealistic socialists, but a society similar to communism is something I am a little worried about, I fear that there may be authoritarianism in it and a stricter censorship of books and newspapers than in Prussia, and I also wonder once in touch with the powers that will they really distribute the wealth equally.
Digressing back to Christianity, I believe that a person is justified not only by faith but also by good works, and I like a few of the saints like Mary Magdalene, the apostle to the apostles, Saint Joseph the Christ's adoptive father and the angels especially Uriel. Saluting the saints again seems to be intolerable in Protestantism, and I prefer the Catholic version of the Bible, so I'll have to learn more about each denomination before I become a believer in any of them), Samantha (the feminine form of Samuel Winchester's name, which I like, but now my favorite SPN characters can be Sam, Samandriel and Adam Milligan), Friederike/Friederike/Friederika (feminine form of Friedrich/Frederick, which means peaceful ruler).
And for me from now on, there will be no more Friedrike, I just want to take names I like and appreciate, like Patricia, Mathilde (a tribute to Mathilde de la Mole in The Red and the Black, (also I like Mathilde's meaning, very sounds like Feminist or at least independent woman, which is a combination of "maht" (meaning might and strength") and "hild" (meaning "battle"), \ she is my favorite woman in literary portrayal, and I am quite fond of Wilde's Salome, I love that she is smart and multi-intelligent, and her father regrets that she is not a man to revitalize their family, and the recent musical Le Rouge et le Noir l'Opéra Rock is my favorite version of it, and my two favorite scenarios are when Mathilde sings Le temps passé avec vous during the musical and when she holds the decapitated head of Julien. I saw in an encyclopedia when I was eight years old that Mathilde held the condemned, decapitated head of Julien as Queen Margot did when she kissed the head of Mathilde's ancestor, Joseph Boniface de La Mole, and laid it to rest. This could be the beginning of a hopelessly fatal-like adore of romance in my life. The romantic part of the story is that Mathilde doesn't love Julien Sorel, she is just acting out her sincerity and romanticism. She puts her love for her great ancestor Joseph Boniface de La Môle in him, and she intends to compose another elegy-like love melody between Queen Margaret Of Valois and Joseph Boniface de La Môle, and if she did love Julien, it would be a vulgar story of a lady of nobility who falls in love with a poor boy to me. ), Uriella/Eurielle or Orielle (Uriel is an Angel with justice, regarded as a master of knowledge and archangel of wisdom and spreads the occult, very cool for me who loves the occult, and I pay homage to him by the name, and Uriel means "God is my light" or "flame of God.")), Valerie (meaning strength), Mary(show my respect to Mary Magdalene), Luise (a salute to Luise von Mecklenburg-Strelitz, admire her as a patriotic queen), Liselotte (I appreciate Elisabeth Charlotte "Liselotte" von der Pfalz. Edit: I have now changed my mind because she believes that the cruel treatment suffered by Sophia Dorothea of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Celle is the result of a morganatic marriage. Nevertheless, the name can still be a good name), Eleonora (I kinda like Maria Eleonora von Brandenburg, for her tempestuous and neurotic love to her husband King Gustav II Adolph, and their marriage was even against the will of her elder brother George William, Elector of Brandenburg," For more than a year Maria Eleonora condemned Christina to a mourning seclusion in rooms draped with black and lit by candles day and night, from which every ray of light was excluded. She made her daughter sleep with her in a bed over which her father's heart was hung in a golden casket. Things were made worse by Maria Eleonora's continual weeping." I love this insane love story except for Eleonora's dismiss and cruelty to her daughter.) and so on.
That's the reason why I called myself Mathilde Urielle Sternbach. I pay tribute to Mathilde and Archangel Urie (paying my attribute to the Archangel Uriel, and Uriel means "God is my light" or "flame of God."). And for Sternbach, at first I just combined "Stern" ( Stern was one of the first German words I knew, and in middle and high school I changed my dad's username to Sternbild, haha) and "Bach" for "Stern" means "star" and "Bach" is a German word that means stream, creek, or brook, and view it as my last name in my mind (Forgive me for behaving in such a way that I feel I am free to think how I am called in my heart, as Anne of Green Gables called herself Cordelia. ), but later I was surprised to find out that the family name actually exists.
PS: I don't know whether Sternbach is a place name or not so that's the reason why I surprised when I googled someone who indeed had that last name out of curiosity. Actually, I'm just combining two sceneries like the Germans of the old days might have done when they were given their surname. (Sorry it's also possible that I misunderstood and didn't know enough because I just checked that Rosenburg for example is a place too).
I was a bit surprised a few months ago when I heard about Mönchengladbach and other ”Bachs“. And it seemed to be that I also have seen places called Neue Neustadt and Alte Neustadt in memes recently and thought that's kind of funny.
Edit: My thoughts were corrected, it's actually place names that are a combination of two sceneries, and then German people's names were taken from the place names.
***Edit:The follwing text in [ ] is copied from my another post https://www.reddit.com/Mathilde_Soliloquy/comments/175upkq/the_love_stories_which_i_love/
[ And I am quite fond of Wilde's Salome, I love these sentences,
”How pale the Princess is! Never have I seen her so pale. She is like the shadow of a white rose in a mirror of silver.”,
”She is like a narcissus trembling in the wind . . . . She is like a silver flower.”,
”He is like a thin ivory statue. He is like an image of silver. I am sure he is chaste as the moon is. He is like a moon-beam, like a shaft of silver.”,
“I am amorous of thy body, Iokanaan! Thy body is white like the lilies of a field that the mower hath never mowed. Thy body is white like the snows that lie on the mountains of Judaea, and come down into the valleys. The roses in the garden of the Queen of Arabia are not so white as thy body. Neither the roses of the garden of the Queen of Arabia, the garden of spices of the Queen of Arabia, nor the feet of the dawn when they light on the leaves, nor the breast of the moon when she lies on the breast of the sea. . . . There is nothing in the world so white as thy body. Suffer me to touch thy body.”,
“It is thy hair that I am enamoured of, Iokanaan. Thy hair is like clusters of grapes, like the clusters of black grapes that hang from the vine-trees of Edom in the land of the Edomites. Thy hair is like the cedars of Lebanon, like the great cedars of Lebanon that give their shade to the lions and to the robbers who would hide them by day. The long black nights, when the moon hides her face, when the stars are afraid, are not so black as thy hair. The silence that dwells in the forest is not so black. There is nothing in the world that is so black as thy hair. . . . Suffer me to touch thy hair.”,
“ It is thy mouth that I desire Iokanaan. Thy mouth is like a band of scarlet on a tower of ivory. It is like a pomegranate cut in twain with a knife of ivory. The pomegranate-flowers that blossom in the gardens of Tyre, and are redder than roses, are not so red. The red blasts of trumpets that herald the approach of kings, and make afraid the enemy, are not so red. Thy mouth is redder than the feet of the doves who inhabit the temples and are fed by the priests. It is redder than the feet of him who cometh from a forest where he hath slain a lion, and seen gilded tigers. Thy mouth is like a branch of coral that fishers have found in the twilight of the sea, the coral that they keep for the kings! . . . It is like the vermilion that the Moabites find in the mines of Moab, the vermilion that the kings take from them. It is like the bow of the King of the Persians, that is painted with vermilion, and is tipped with coral. There is nothing in the world so red as thy mouth. . . . Suffer me to kiss thy mouth.”,
“In that day the sun shall become black like sackcloth of hair, and the moon shall become like blood, and the stars of the heaven shall fall upon the earth like unripe figs that fall from the fig-tree, and the kings of the earth shall be afraid.”,
“It were better to say that stains of blood are as lovely as rose petals.”,
“They will follow thee whithersoever thou goest, and in the midst of them thou wilt be like unto the moon in the midst of a great white cloud. . . . ”.
The best parts of Salome are “Ah! thou wouldst not suffer me to kiss thy mouth, Iokanaan. Well! I will kiss it now. I will bite it with my teeth as one bites a ripe fruit. Yes, I will kiss thy mouth, Iokanaan. I said it; did I not say it? I said it. Ah! I will kiss it now. . . . But, wherefore dost thou not look at me Iokanaan? Thine eyes that were so terrible, so full of rage and scorn, are shut now. Wherefore are they shut? Open thine eyes! Lift up thine eyelids, Iokanaan! Wherefore dost thou not look at me? Art thou afraid of me, Iokanaan, that thou wilt not look at me? . . . And thy tongue, that was like a red snake darting poison, it moves no more, it speaks no words, Iokanaan, that scarlet viper that spat its venom upon me. It is strange, is it not? How is it that the red viper stirs no longer? . . . Thou wouldst have none of me, Iokanaan. Thou rejectedst me. Thou didst speak evil words against me. Thou didst bear thyself toward me as to a harlot, as to a woman that is a wanton, to me, Salomé, daughter of Herodias, Princess of Judæa! Well, I still live, but thou art dead, and thy head belongs to me. I can do with it what I will. I can throw it to the dogs and to the birds of the air. That which the dogs leave, the birds of the air shall devour. . . . Ah, Iokanaan, thou wert the man that I loved alone among men. All other men were hateful to me. But thou wert beautiful! Thy body was a column of ivory set upon feet of silver. It was a garden full of doves and lilies of silver. It was a tower of silver decked with shields of ivory. There was nothing in the world so white as thy body. There was nothing in the world so black as thy hair. In the whole world there was nothing so red as thy mouth. Thy voice was a censer that scattered strange perfumes, and when I looked on thee I heard a strange music. Ah! wherefore didst thou not look at me, Iokanaan? With the cloak of thine hands, and with the cloak of thy blasphemies thou didst hide thy face. Thou didst put upon thine eyes the covering of him who would see his God. Well, thou hast seen thy God, Iokanaan, but me, me, thou didst never see. If thou hadst seen me thou hadst loved me. I saw thee, and I loved thee. Oh, how I loved thee! I love thee yet, Iokanaan, I love only thee. . . . I am athirst for thy beauty; I am hungry for thy body; and neither wine nor apples can appease my desire. What shall I do now, Iokanaan? Neither the floods nor the great waters can quench my passion. I was a princess, and thou didst scorn me. I was a virgin, and thou didst take my virginity from me. I was chaste, and thou didst fill my veins with fire. . . Ah! ah! wherefore didst thou not look at me? If thou hadst looked at me thou hadst loved me. Well I know that thou wouldst have loved me, and the mystery of love is greater that the mystery of death.” ,
and “Ah! I have kissed thy mouth, Iokanaan, I have kissed thy mouth. There was a bitter taste on my lips. Was it the taste of blood ? . . . Nay; but perchance it was the taste of love. . . . They say that love hath a bitter taste. . . . But what matter? what matter? I have kissed thy mouth.”
I love them so much, and I often chant this in my heart “Wherefore didst thou not look at me, Iokanaan?” (or the German version “Warum hast du mich nicht angesehen, Jokanaan?”)
By the way, I must say, I got to know Salome because of a fantastic fanvideo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyuuThuZtVo by a girl, I even made a transcription and post https://www.reddit.com/Mathilde_Soliloquy/comments/17af92m/salome_wherefore_didst_thou_not_look_at_me/ about it. (Let me emphasize, I am not quite a shipping fan of Watson and Sherlock Holmes (the video maker she shipped that). Because my thoughts are relatively fluid. For example, sometimes I may not like a certain couple because of the concept of gender politics such as Duryodhana and Karna, but I need to say, the Pandavas are much more evil and vicious than Dhritarashtra (Duryodhana is the eldest among Dhritarashtra) in Mahabharata. Or I just convert my emotions to other couples.)
As for Maria Eleonora von Brandenburg, I kinda like her, for her tempestuous and neurotic love to her husband King Gustav II Adolph, and their marriage was even against the will of her elder brother George William, Elector of Brandenburg," For more than a year Maria Eleonora condemned Christina to a mourning seclusion in rooms draped with black and lit by candles day and night, from which every ray of light was excluded. She made her daughter sleep with her in a bed over which her father's heart was hung in a golden casket. Things were made worse by Maria Eleonora's continual weeping." I love this insane love story except for Eleonora's dismiss and cruelty to her daughter.
But rencently I’ve learned that she was seriously missunderstood, her cruelty to her daughter and the disharmony between the mother and the daughter may be due to the smear campaign by male historians.]

I almost forgot to talk about the German political parties, uhm, it can be said that none of the six or seven main parties is satisfying. When I was a kid I considered myself an anarchist, but when I grew up I felt that anarchy brings disorder. First of all, I'm an anti-drugs advocate, and not only It's not just the anti-drug propaganda in the country, where I grew up, but also I think that drugs are mentally debilitating and is one of the destabilizing factors in society, which is very dangerous and can be regarded as ruin country and people. In this case, only CDU and AFD are anti-drugs among the main parties, but I'm quite speechless about these two parties, I don't have a good opinion of CDU because of the refugee crisis, and I can never forget the trauma that Cologne, a holy Christian city also the first German city I got to know or had an impression has experienced.
As for AFD, so to speak, may be loved by quite a few people in the China where authoritarianism and nationalism are on the rise. A person has posted in forums that she/he has met Alice Weidel in person and said she stated that refugees were welcome to come to Germany as long as they obeyed the law. This party supposedly does not support LGBT people, personally I would support LGBT people if they weren't involved in breaking the law, I think it's outrageous for someone pretends to be transgender to commit rape and then say that it's a same-sex act that doesn't violate the crime of rape. It's well known that Alice Weidel is a lesbian(does she have some stuff with Reichsbürge? I've heard this scandal), and I think it's also possible that the AFD is using this as a way to quell the controversy and reflect their diversity and inclusiveness.
For the past few years polandball's world map section has often featured right-wing activism in the eastern part of Germany and I remember one year there was a Saxonyball shouting"Raus!Raus!" https://www.reddit.com/polandball/comments/7hgur3/official_polandball_world_map_2017/, which, in my opinion, if some Ausländer can be viewed as poisonous do not abide by German law such as who commit rape then should be strictly punished and get out, if they are harmless and do good to German society it can be welcomed. I really do not understand why EU countries that do not accept refugees have to pay for this in euros, in China there is a proverb goes"who develops, who solves; who pollutes, who protects," at least the European citizens do not owe the refugees it, why is there a shameless official (Clements Ladenburger)when his daughter was raped and killed by refugee can still call for non-discrimination against refugees and support the refugee policy?
But all in all, I think that even though the media does directly label the AFD as far right-wing, there are indeed right-wingers within the party such as Höcke, the AFD shouldn't be taken lightly, because it could buy people's hearts and minds with moderates, and then come to power and purge out the dissidents with heavy-handed tactics, and besides, even if it's the poisonous Ausländer I'm talking about that need to raus, the definitions of what's poisonous can be changed at that point like homosexuals, feminists... Take me as an example, the lesbian part can be hidden quite well, who will know I loved (I was once attacked by haters of two very nice girls of theirs back in 2018 because I spoke up for them online, and it was another girl two years older than me who stood up for and protected me from this internet violence, and I loved her for it) a girl if I don't tell anyone? But when talks about feminism, I cannot hide unless I pretend to be not aware of the patriarchal society. As for Die Grünen(The Greens),I have nothing but bad impression of it for dismantling nuclear power, forcefully pushing veganism, and the expensive new building heating law.
PS: Texting such a long comment is giving me a headache, I need to listen to my favorite song Jeg Vil to relieve myself

2023.11.15 22:26 sswblue [Spoiler] Genefather: A bucket of dissapointment

It felt like reading a poorly written fanfiction...
All that will follow is only my highly biased and subjective opinion. All are allowed to disagree.
I just finished Genefather, and for all the hype it gathered, I will not lie. It was disappointing. The last book I read before Genefather was Black Legion, and never before have I felt such a blow from the difference in quality. From the difference in characterization to the dialogue, it is like comparing spoiled milk to a nice Sundae. With that said, here is my list of grievances about Genefather:
TLDR: The book has several issues and it doesn't help that I read Black Legion, one of the best w40k books just before. Between the inconsistent characters, bad tropes, bland dialogues, very descriptive and frankly boring writing style, slow and boring fight scenes, and the huge discrepency between what we are told vs how characters act, I will not hide my disappointment. Nothing against Haley, but I wish Crowley, Brooks, ADB, Abnett or any other has taken this assignment.
Thanks for reading this huge wall of text.

2023.11.13 16:12 Foxwarrior3 What would Class-A's and B's favourite One Piece characters be?

So, for some time I've read a BNHA watches One Piece fic, called Everyone Has Dreams. It's a pretty good read, but be warned, Bakugo bitches about filler whenever it happens and pretty much hates Usopp too. Currently is in the Davy Back Fight arc. Class-B is also watching One Piece with Vlad King and Midnight, although they're only at ep 41.
And I wondered what would Class-A's and B's favourite One Piece characters be? Specifically Class B, since a commenter already summarized my thoughts in their comment:
Aizawa: SmokeAokiji
Hizashi: Franky/Brook/Apoo
Toshinori: Luffy/Whitebeard
Aoyama: Robin/Usopp
Mina: Franky
Tsuyu: Jinbe/Hatchan
Iida: Sabo/Smoker (although he wants Smoker to quit smoking)
Uraraka: Nami/Katakuri (he also has her favorite devil fruit)
Ojiro: Urouge
Kaminari: X. Drake
Kirishima: Dorry & Brogy/Shanks
Kouda: (All of the animal characters, but he especially likes Chopper and Bepo)
Satou: Zeff
Shouji: Jinbe/Fisher Tiger
Jiro: Sanji/Brook (but she will never admit it)
Sero: Rayleigh
Tokoyami: (All of the swordsman characters) Robin/Hawkins/Marco
Todoroki: Ace/Whitebeard/Sanji (but only after WCI)
Toru: Camie
Bakugo: Eustass Kid/Killer
Izuku: Luffy/Koby
Mineta: (Do I even need to bother)
Momo: Vivi
Then, what would Class-B's (not to mention Vlad King's and Midnight's) favourite characters be? And do you have any different ideas for Class A's favourites?
