Hey, recently I found my grandma's old laptop (IBM thinkpad t42), which currently runs windows XP. Which distro would work on this laptop without too much lag (or preferably without any)? Also i would prefer stable distros, rather than rolling release ones.

2024.06.01 11:21 DejanSA Buying Windows XP PC for early 2000 games.

Hello everyone!
I'm planning to buy a Windows XP PC, mostly for older games, nothing special.
What CPU & GPU combo would you recommend for early 2000 games? I'm currently running Windows XP on a VM, but there's a problem with 3D acceleration so it would be really nice to have a physical machine then.
I'm planning on running without any internet access, because of security reasons.

2024.06.01 09:04 Zelda_mast3r T43 upgrades

I just put my hands on a T43 from 2005. It was my grandfather's old laptop and it has 1.86mhz cpu. I want to upgrade the cpu to the Pentinum M 780 and also the ram. I read that the max ram is 2gb, but my dad says that he owned one and had 16gb. It runs windows xp but I wonder if their is compatible linux soft that would work. Thanks.

2024.06.01 09:02 MarsDrums Dual booting Windows and Linux - Hot swap suggestion

I've made a few comments now on setting up a computer with a swappable drive tray so one could switch between Linux and Windows and never have the two bump heads with one another.
I did this back in the XP days and it worked beautifully.
I had a hot swap drive bay in my PC and basically, when I ran Windows, I had the Windows hard drive in that bay. When I wanted to boot up Linux, I would pull out the Windows drive and slide in the Linux drive. The computer didn't care which drive was in it. It just booted whatever was on it.
Today, I run Linux only. I've made the jump and removed Windows from my life forever. So I no longer need a hot swap drive system in my computer. I run Linux 24/7.
But I think one can still use this technique of using a swappable drive bay. And with auto hard drive detection, it should be pretty simple to use 2 different sized drives. But, don't quote me on that.
So, the best way to accomplish this feat is to get a second hard drive that is the same size/model as the one you already have. So, if you have a 1TB SSD from Western Digital, get a matching 1TB SSD drive from Western Digital. Same model (you might be able to get away with a different size drive but I'm playing it safe here).
Then get a hot swap drive bay system for your computer. Something that will accommodate those 2 drives. Make sure it has at least 2 hot swap trays.
Connect the hot swap bay to the computer and now you'll be able to swap between 2 different drives. One with Linux and one with Windows.
You're going to have to shut down the computer to make the swap. Once the computer is off, swap the drives and power it back up and you should boot into the other.
It's a pretty simple concept. It's much easier than shutting the computer down and taking the side panel off and swapping cables all the time. Just pull one out from the front of the computer and slide the other one in it's place and boot it up.
Pretty simple really.

2024.06.01 08:33 Odd_Loquat8173 How do you install Linux on Thinkpad R61e without internet?

I recently found a thinkpad r61e in my house from like 15 years ago, it still boots up and runs windows xp. I can't download any linux distros directly because the internet connection doesn't work for some reason even though when I plug it in to a ethernet cord it says connected and tells me the internet speed. Is there anyway I can download everything needed on my current computer and then install linux on the thinkpad? Thanks.

2024.06.01 04:57 BgJck7 Dell Dimension 4600 SATA IDE mode

I got a Dell Dimension 4600 in the mail today and it's IDE drive was removed and wiped. It had two SATA ports on the motherboard and I also picked up a SATA power to molex cable to power the drive. I was using WinSetupFromUSB to install Windows XP from a boot USB. First, I saw that you have to have the SATA drive plugged into SATA 0 on the motherboard and not SATA 1. Along with this, I saw that I had to set the SATA drive to an IDE compatibility mode in the BIOS which I couldn't find so I'm sure if this is needed on this PC. Second, with the WinSetupFromUSB, it has an option where it grabs the SATA driver and when I do this option it always says it failed. Then I try to enter the XP setup and after it load the setup it crashes to a BSOD. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

2024.06.01 04:22 yellowt3a I think the late 2000s influence/ feeling lasting depends on which country you live in

personally from where i live (im from somewhere in Southeast Asia) in the early 2010s (2010 - 2014), not many people could afford Smartphones (Apple, Samsung, etc etc) & some still stayed using cellphones like Nokia (My dad used his Blackberry until around 2012 with his new iPhone 4), people drove a mix of cars from the 90s & 2000s, reruns of 00s cartoons you could recognize on TV, some computer shops & schools still used Windows XP until around 2015 while Windows 7 is dominating, some people still used digital cameras, iPods are still somewhat a thing?, Netflix haven't made it to my country & we still used Cable TV & DVDs, some still use CRT TVs while almost everyone start to have Plasma TVs, elements & leftovers of Frutiger Aero still remain, radio sometimes play music from the mid - late 00s, 7th gen of gaming consoles are still popular, Some places that haven't been renovated since like 2008 but later did in the mid 2010s, some homes still use cordless landline phones, Domo kun was still everywhere, Rage comics were still the norm & MLG rising, Swag culture (although its more early 2010s itself but its sometimes associated with "Jejemon" from where im from), Electropop is still popular & EDM is on the rise, etc.
I guess i could say its somewhat? an extension of the late 2000s but with the rise of smartphones. I would say all of that remaining elements went down from 10 - 0% from around mid 2015 ish, but thats just probably me.

2024.06.01 04:17 SeaZombies Anyone know if Fable: Lost Chapters requires a "Games for Windows Live" account, and if it's still possible to use that service?

Hi all, I just bought an upgraded Gateway with Windows XP installed and a CRT monitor to boot, been looking at a lot of physical retro games on Ebay and since the original Fable has always been one of my favorite games I wanted to grab a sealed copy since they're pretty cheap. Well anyways, in the bottom right of the box https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/sE4AAOSwmoRmOSRU/s-l960.webp I saw a little icon that says "Games for Windows". I know that service shut down last year, so would it still be possible to register and play that? Thanks!

2024.06.01 04:04 Cartoonkal I can't hear my virtual machine

I recently created a VM and installed windows xp on it and everything mostly works fine but for some reason I don't hear any sound coming from it. Windows XP doesn't say there's anything wrong with the audio when the audio controller is set to ICH AC97 even though I get no sound. When I set it to Soundblaster 16, XP doesn't detect an audio device. When I set it to Intel HD Audio, it says "new hardware found" and that I have to install drivers. It can't find the drivers on its own and I don't know how to install them manually. And even if I did, I don't know if that would solve my problem. Any help would be much appreciated.
