Sagging rafters on gambrel shed

Sagging rafters on gambrel shed
I’m looking possibly saving this shed. Please forgive me, I’ve done very little research into the structure of gambrel sheds and these are my initial plans.
The rafters are clearly separating since the gussets weren’t nearly strong enough. Here’s my plan:
-Jack the sagged section -using a chain and turn buckle setup attempt to bring the bowing out side walls back in -install 5/8” plywood gussets on each side of every rafter joint
I’m struggling with a solution for the lower rafters separating from the side walls. These seem to be installed wrong. Does anyone have suggestions to secure those?

Seeking Advise On New Shed Build Regarding Collar and Rafter Ties
I'm working on building a new gable end garden shed this upcoming summer and while I already have a design laid out, I'm reconsidering the roof construction to go from king post trusses to using a ridge beam with rafters instead.
The shed will be 12' x 16' and a 5/12 slope to the roof. The rafters are currently spaced at 24" OC.
I would like to maintain as much height inside the shed as possible, so my question is, do I need to include rafter ties with rafters on a ridge beam or can I get away with just collar ties? I see a lot of pre-built sheds in my area don't have either rafter or collar ties and they use gussets or truss plates only. Similar to the attached images.
I do live in Northern Colorado and have a decent amount of snowfall each year (not this year sadly) so snow load is a partial concern but not a major one.

2024.02.26 16:27 TacticalLeemur Alternative to Gusset plates for a cathedral ceiling in a shed

I bought a shed kit and put it together to use as a home office. As I approach the point where I'm going to drywall it, I'm looking at the Gusset plates connecting the roof trusses to eachother and thinking that's going to make for an ugly ceiling.
They are still exposed, and most of them are double-sided, so it seems reasonable to support the roof and replace them, but I'm not sure what would be a good alternative that won't drop below the trusses.
I see mending plates but they don't look very strong.
Any thoughts would be helpful. Maybe I'm just thinking about this wrong and need to think about drywalling it differently.

Would this rafter design work? See details
I'm planning to build a storage shed that is 8ft by 12ft and want this type of single slant roof. Would it work to cut the boards that the top slanted part sits on as shown in the sketch and attach with gussets? This is my first time doing this and really appreciate the help. I'm trying to avoid cutting the birdsmouths but want to be sure that flat surface is not absolutely needed. Thanks!
Edit: I am in a place that get snow.

2023.12.11 02:13 LPKult Help understanding Truss angles/cuts for shed

EDIT: Look in comments for photos!
First time shed builder and speed square user. Foundation and walls are all a success but I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around building the trusses. Want to gather some info and cut some test pieces first before I rush and make a mistake.

As a bonus I'm also curious as to exactly which ties to use (mending plates or regular tie plates with SD Connector screws) as the plans have no details on those either really. I did decide to make triangular gussets for the very tops out of 3/4" plywood at least, instead of a little tie as shown. Once I know which ties to get it's off to Home Depot I go.

2023.12.11 01:27 LPKult Help understanding Truss measurements/cuts for shed

First time shed builder. Foundation and walls are all fine, but now I'm taking some time to understand how these trusses are built, and cut some practice pieces too, before I rush and make a mistake.
https://pasteboard.co/VriuYNtwaq3w.jpg
https://i.ibb.co/92tkq54/2.jpg
These are from the plans I have. They're not detailed at all and leave a bit of guesswork. I'm learning to use my speed square now but it's confusing with so little info in the plans I purchased.

I'll worry about the additional 'roof bracing' later once I figure all of this out.
As a bonus I'm also curious as to which kind of ties to use (mending plates or regular tie plates) because it doesn't go into detail about that at all. I did opt for adding triangular gussets at the top though, that I'll make from 3/4" plywood, instead of a little plate as shown.

2023.11.18 23:58 wolfpuparistotle Winter running gear MVP!

Hi runners! Just wanted to share my excitement about finally finding a piece of winter running gear that I’ve been searching for sooo long: short inseam insulated shorts to wear over tights!
Typically when running in colder weather my booty turns into a block of ice while the rest of me is just fine… so I have basically been looking for a butt warmer lol. I finally found it—these shorts that were $16 on Amazon: Adidas insulated shorts
They have reflectors on the back (perfect, as I run in a city), a drawstring at the waist, a pass through on the back for storing any layers you may shed, stretchy side panels, and a stretchy crotch gusset. They come in 4” and 2” inseams, and the waist on the 2” ones I got is fairly high.
Hopefully this find makes at least one other runner gal as happy as it’s made me.

Sturdy enough? 2 story shed build + roof question
Here’s an update on my shed build, with a question. Are my vaulted ceiling plans sturdy enough for the shed I'm building? I'm most concerned about snow loads. I am planning to do the roof 16" on center. I will be putting a metal roof on it and there is a 45 ps ground snow load. The pitch is 5/12. I'II be using reclaimed 8' rough sawn 3X6s. The span is 12' from wall to wall, and I'll have 11 of them and then gable walls (rake walls?) on the ends. I am also debating whether to use some 3/4" plywood as gusset plates or to buy all metal ones you just hammer on. I'm wondering if it's overbuilt anyway and I'II be more than fine or if I should actually pay an engineer to sign off on it. Also: I decided to angle the top plate so there's no birdsmouth now with the trusses, it will just sit right on top.

2023.10.11 19:14 prophetikmusic Looking for cheap building supplies

I am going to be building a shed pretty soon. I am looking for used or second-hand building supplies like plywood, cheap shingles, 2x and 1x lumber, gussets, etc. I have been using Craigslist and FB Marketplace to find stuff but apparently nobody wants to sell anything since they never reply. Is there a place that sells cheaper materials as opposed to just discounted plumbing and lighting fixtures?

2023.09.15 21:38 Celtic_Jedi Are these trusses adequate for a small (12x24’) garage?

Hey all! I’m building a small garage for a special car I have, and I’m not sure if these trusses are burly enough. The garage is 12x24, stick build 2x4 construction. I’ve made some mods to the “kit” like running 16oc studs (instead of 24oc), and made a few things a little stronger. I’m going to drywall the inside and sheath/wrap/side the outside. Roofing will be GAF shingles with probably a continuous ridge vent. Will be anchored to concrete slab.
I noticed there’s NO rafter ties on the trusses in this setup, only collar ties and gussets. They’re hung with hurricane hangars and spaced 24oc. We don’t get much snow ever, 9” is the most I’ve ever seen and even that was a 30 year record. Some wind, not a ton, not extreme.
Can anyone comment on this and tell me if I should beef up the trusses with rafter ties or leave as-is?
Here’s the manual. It’s a best barns Greenbriar 12x24 kit, with a few minor improvements I’ve done.

2023.08.30 02:09 Sufficient-Border-10 The Ballad of Clover Smidge

Is there anything so traumatic
As a stalker hiding in your attic?
But as Clover, our heroine, liked to boast,
To her it happened by far the most.
Three men watched her with aching hearts,
But Peter's where our story starts.
•••
Poor Peter, he's our OG schmuck
Poor with manners, worse with luck
In town, he saw a blaze of red -
The hairs snaking out of Clover's head.
"My, my," he thought, "She'd make a spouse!
"I'd better hole up inside her house!
"It's an act of love, not spite,
"I'll reveal myself when the time is right!"
•••
He broke in that night, raced up her ladder,
Armed with buckets for bowel and bladder.
Yup, Peter had read from cover-to-cover,
The handbook for being an attentive lover.
A hole in the floor, if he turned his head,
Gave the perfect view of Clover's bed.
•••
A creamy leg atop her eiderdown,
A clavicle peeping from her dressing gown.
"Kerching," said Pete, "She's caught this rover!"
"She's tamed THIS stallion has Clover!"
But before Pete could get much bolder
He felt a hand upon his shoulder.
•••
"Who the fuck are you?" the stranger hissed.
He sounded mental, sounded pissed.
"If you're here to stay, you'd better learn,
"From one to three, it's Paulie's turn."
The man was built like a brick-house shitter,
Lips twisted with venom, his tone was bitter.
"I won't play around, I'll stay schematic,
"But I'M the one living in this attic!"
•••
"Gentlemen, please!" sang someone below.
"I believe you BOTH can enjoy the show!"
Her smile was coy, but tone pragmatic,
As Clover climbed into the attic!
"My boys, be calm, don't start a brawl -
"Paul meet Peter, and Peter, Paul."
•••
"Don't fly away, no need for force,
"We just drill another hole of course!"
She whipped a power tool from behind her back,
And evened out their odds a crack.
"Now boys, watch, but don't make a peep,
"I really need my beauty sleep."
And from the attic, Clover did dispatch,
But not before she'd locked the hatch.
•••
"THAT BITCH!" Paul screamed, pounding the floor,
With hope of breaking the latch and door.
"Uh, Paul?" said Peter - he'd begun to gag.
In the corner, he'd found a plastic bag.
It smelled vile, like rotting egg -
"Oh yes!" called Clover, "watch out for Greg!"
•••
"He spied on me too, came here one day.
"And now he just won't go away."
Peter opened the bag and began to shout
As skin and organs came tumbling out.
"Clover's mad, she's lost her head!"
"Greg can't leave, 'CUS GREG IS DEAD!"
•••
"No shit," said Clover, who'd reappeared.
Her face looked odd, her eyes were weird.
"When will men ever get the measure,
"WOMEN DON'T EXIST FOR MAN'S VIEWING PLEASURE?!"
And then Clover with her hair of russet,
Snatched an Uzi from her gusset.
"THIS WASN'T EVER DEMOCRATIC -
"YOU PLAY BY MY RULES IN THIS ATTIC!"
•••
A spray of bullets, a scream, and then -
Clover was finally on her own again.

2023.07.29 04:04 jpm1012 Question about rafter tie

Question about rafter tie
I have a 12x24 shed that I’m finishing, and I’m wondering if the rafter tie pictured can be removed, especially with gussets all along the top. Are there any alternatives that would accomplish the same thing (hurricane ties?).
I could definitely be wrong, but it seems like one rafter tie for a 24-foot shed isn’t helping much anyway.
Any guidance is appreciated.

Modified D.I.A.S. from Learn MYOG
Decided to try my hand at making some clothing for the first time to try to learn some new skills so I purchased The DIAS pattern from Learn MYOG.com.
The pattern was excellent and easy to follow. There were a few steps that were just a touch hard to discern what was happening in the pictures while pre-reading the pattern instructions, but quickly made more sense when I was actually sewing and was able to manipulate the fabric pieces in my hands. The pattern also included instructions for how to make custom fit adjustments which I took full advantage of. I did start off by making a muslin prototype of without pockets to check fit and how I would like to adjust it to myself.
Modifications:
Leg opening: For starter the pattern is for a clean straight leg fit but I quite like a very room almost bell shaped leg. Luckily instructions for enlarging the leg opening were included. I added an inch to both back and front pattern pieces of each leg
Shortened inseam: Although instructions were included on how to adjust the pattern properly, I just added ~1/4" to each fold of the bottom hem, which worked out just perfectly for me (your milage may vary depending on amount of adjustment desired).
Webbing waist: Although a simple and common way to adjust a waist band im not their biggest fan of drawstring so I shifted the button holes down the pattern so they would end up on the outside of the waist band and moved them both to 3 1/2" either side of the center seam. This seemed to an appropriate amount of room to easily adjust the tension of the webbing with an inverted ladder lock. While assembling I found the ladder lock only functioned smoothly with the back of the lock was facing outward from the waist band.
To sum it up LearnMYOG DIAS are a great simple pattern with so many ways to easily adjust to whatever you're specifically looking for. I know the shorts aren't perfect and there's plenty of room for improvement, but honestly for a first attempt at clothing(or using a pattern for that matter) I ended up with an awesome, very wearable pair of shorts while learning loads along the way!

2023.04.12 20:59 4pple2 20x10 Shed Questions

20x10 Shed Questions
I am making a 20x10 shed in Minnesota. It will be a 2x6 green treat for the wood floor frame with 2x4x8 sidewalls. everything 16" OC I do have a few questions that hopefully you guys can help me out on.
  1. What size wood should i use for the rafters and how large should I cut the gusset plates?
    1. The slope of the roof will be 10/12.
    2. I will be using 8' long 2x4 or 2x6 and cutting a bird mouth to connect to the side walls. Should i use 2x4 or 2x6? I also want as much headroom in the shed as possible so how large should my gusset plates be? Note i am in Minnesota so we get snow.
2x4 and 2x6 sketch of rafter.
  1. Foundation
    1. I will be putting this shed right next to a driveway with the area sloping down 8" per 10 feet. so fairly flat. I would like the shed to be just slightly higher than the driveway. I was thinking of the side closet to the driveway i would put a row of 8x16x4 solid concrete blocks and having the edge of the frame sit on that. And then for the middle and end supports i would put a block every 4' and run a 4x4x20 on those blocks. Is this a bad idea? If so what would be a better solution?
  2. shed floor
    1. I was thinking of using this as a shed floor. https://www.menards.com/main/building-materials/panel-products/tongue-groove-subfloor-panels/3-4-x-4-x-8-water-repellant-tongue-groove-plywood-subfloo1231305/p-1444431323083-c-13333.htm?tid=8155750409426162996&ipos=3 Is that a good material to use? If not what is another solution. I will have a snowblower in the winter and mower in the summer so im looking for something that will repel the elements.
  3. Connecting 2 walls together for the 20' sidewall
    1. I was planning for the 20' sidewall to split it up into 2 10' section and put them together. See attached photo for example. I am no carpenter I just thought this would be the easiest way to do it. I am using 4x8 lp sheets so the 2 walls would fall in the middle of a lp sheet. Is there a better way to do it then just getting a few 2x4x20'
20' Sidewall plan
I think that is all my questions. Any input will help. Thanks guys!

2023.03.29 03:07 rtm3211 Shed roof questions

I'm building a large shed for a woodworking woodshop and I'm trying to determine my roofing layout. It will be an 18' x 18' building. I'm planning on doing a basic 5:12 roof using 2x4's with a plywood gusset at the peak of each rafter and rafter ties on each one. Rafters will be 16" on center and sit directly above the studs. Also putting collar ties on every 4th rafter. I live in Michigan and we get a decent amount of snow.
Question: Is this an appropriate way to build the roof structure? Do I need 2x6's instead of 2x4's? Are a simple layout of gussets and rafter ties sufficient and is it allowed to span 18' with this setup? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
