While reading through this subreddit, I'm struck by how often I see non-colloquial language used. I find this most often with libertarians. They say things like "an agent of the state" where most people would say "government worker". They say "engaged in a mutually voluntary trade of labor and fiat currency" instead of "got a job". I also listen to a lot of conservative and libertarian podcasts and hear people talking like this.
These types of phrases seem to come so easily from some people, that I wonder, do you think in terms of this language? Are they part of your day-to-day internal monologue?
Like, I might think "Yesterday I went to a barbecue. I met Anna, a teacher, and we got on the subject of how we both need to renew our driver's licenses. I checked my Robinhood app to see that my balance went up by $200 over the past week. "
Do you think internally in terms like "Yesterday, I went to a barbecue, one of many forms of voluntary recreation that the state is trying to suffocate with excessive regulations on coal and fuel. I met Anna, an agent of the state invested with authority over children. We spoke about the onerous dictate that we must engage with the bureaucratic state once again in order for the office of a local commissar to approve my travel identification. I checked the investments I made by mutually exchanging currency with a private company who bought shares of a company on my behalf. Although I made a profit, much of that will be gobbled up by the dictates that the state confiscate and seize a portion of my proceeds. I'm exaggerating a bit, obviously. But I've genuinely come across posts written on this subreddit of people who describe everyday things like this. I would link them if it probably weren't against the rules and considered bullying.
But my main questions is, do online and radio conservatives talk like this for effect? Or do you really think in that language all day?

So I've been learning Latin through online courses for about a year now, and am going to be studying Classics at a university that will require that I learn both Latin and Ancient Greek. I've been learning Latin through online courses as I mentioned, using Hans Orberg's Familia Romana, and probably would look to learn Greek through a similar 'natural' approach.
My issue is that I'm unsure when I want to start. After my exams finish this Monday, I'll have until September, or even October (if I get the grades to get into my my first choice university) where I'm not really doing anything. My current Latin course will end later this month and I've been genuinely considering starting to learn some Greek rather than just continuing with Latin, which will form the bulk of my language study at university anyway.
Having read through a lot of both Latin and Greek texts in translation, as well as a lot of scholarship which usually deals with a lot of the original phrasing in both languages, my appetite for Greek as well as Latin has grown. And I do really want to start learning Greek so I can begin to approach texts with better reference to the original language (I remember, when I started learning Latin, it helped so much in my approach to the Aeneid, even if I didn't necessarily understand what I was reading).
Basically, I'm looking for some advice from people who speak both language or are aiming too, or even people who can share some advice regardless, about how to approach learning them. I'm very happy with my Latin, but do people recommend taking it to a level of very high proficiency first or is learning both a feasible path?

You can't guarantee others that one day they'll finally be happy + when It comes to social interactions - We're responsible only for ourselves - not others & as you guys know people let us down quite often (sometimes even when there's no reason) so instead of telling people how they should move on, forget everything and be happy or asking them to find a therapist - be there for them! Always be willing to listen to them If you really like them or want to get to know them & don't suggest everyone in a tough situation to find a therapist because even the best therapist won't ever replace a true friend + It's quite normal to be disappointed If people always do something to hurt you. This is going to be a long one so bear with me please. I am also giving a lot of backstory and past issues bcz I feel they are relevant to the matter and also I feel like ranting. Also this is in India so the currency is Rupees. Before we start I just want to say that I am not perfect in any way or form and I have done any fair share of mistakes. I(20F) have been in a relationship with my bf Jake(22M)(fake name) for roughly 5.5 yrs now. My family is not rich but we do have a lot of money bcz both my parents are doctors but I did not realise we have this much money until 2yrs ago. (Am not very street smart as U will see in this post). Since after abt 1.5 years of relationship (May 2020)when lockdown started his family fell on hardtimes as his family owns a shop and bcz of the Pandemic they weren't able to run it. At first it was bcz one of his friend got into an accident so he needs money and he told me he will give it back etc (i don't remember if he ever did as it was yrs ago). At the time I had money saved up so I helped out the first few times with my own money. Then when I ran out of money then he said to ask my dad or mom, or steal from my house and give him some. A lil back story here, my mom and dad are separated so they did not used to talk about finances so I would take extra money from my dad than what was actually required and give the rest to jake. For e.g I required 3k for a parcel or smrg then I would ask for 5k, give my mother the 3k(I live with her, my father lives separately) and give the 2k to jake. I also gave him cash many times by essentially stealing from my mother's closet. When I used to say NO he hurled abuses at me and called me every name in the book which a person can imagine, guilt tripped me and pushed me very hard and I gave in almost every time. He told me he will give me back eventually, he has made an investment,etc. Basically all stupid lies to have more time, then one day during an arguement I pressed on when he is gonna return the money and after a lot of time he told me there is no investment and he used the money in his family's shop. After 2.5 year of this in October-Nov of 2022 we both got admissions in universities which were around 2 hours away from each other. Till then this pattern continued and his family was still struggling bcz of his father's brother divided the joint business or something else. Before this when we were at out respective homes he told me he got some operation done for smtg in his abdomen. I gave him 10k from my mother's closet for that and even when I went to meet he had an area bandaged (was very unprofessionally done my dumb self should have understood that it was also fake) one of his friend also confirmed that he had operation done and I was coordinating with him on the said dates when he was supposedly admitted. He also used to frequently tell me that he has suicidal thoughts and he will end himself etc . After we went to our respective colleges once we had a big fight and next day he told me that he tried to end himself by jumping of the balcony but his friend (who he was staying with at the time),Luke, stopped him worrying for him I called Luke later and told him I was worried for Jake and to pls take care of him. He was confused by this and asked me why what happened. I asked him abt last night's attempt, he told me nothing of that sort happened. This opened a can of worms where it was revealed that he was making a fool out of me, guy owned a fucking Iphone and was telling me that his family was on hard times and taking money from me. This is also when I found out that their was no operation. I don't remember what else I found out that night but felt like a huge betrayal and I talked to 3 of his friends that night for quite a few hours where a lot of lies were revealed. I broke it off with him, at this point I had lent a total of Rs.75-80k. He begged me for weeks for forgiveness, at first I laughed in his face but as weeks went by I started to miss us. He came to meet and win me back a few times at my uni. Eventually, a month later I forgave him on some conditions like he wont lie and share everything with me, won't tell me who or who not to be friends with (he did that before a lot). My college is in a much smaller city so I go to meet him once to twice a month as he shares a flat with few ppl and the city has more activities to do. Onto The current issue Almost 3 days ago now, Jake called me (we already have been fighting for I don't even remember how many days at that point a week maybe?) and we told me that he was told by his dad that they have been unable to make payments for the loan they took from a person keeping their shop as collateral, they have to pay half the amount (Total amount was 5 lakhs) and interest which was 64k tomorrow to that person, they have arranged most of the money but are short by abt 30k. He asked me can I do something (steal or ask my dad). I refused as there is no money in my mother's closet anyway and I haven't talked to my dad in abt 3 months now. (ofcourse I did not outright refuse and just gave him my reas oning buz I'm a doormat 🥰🤡🤡). I pressed me to pls talk to my father about money and tell him I need it for my tablet (I bought one just a few days prior). I refused and said he won't give me money anyway. He asked what about my mother's bank account, it must have something. One account is linked to UPI ( It's for making online payments in India) and one is not. The one that is linked does not have much money bCz my mother's salary has not been credited in 4 months. The other account has money but as it does not has UPI activated online payments cannot be done.I told him all of this. He asked can I activate the UPI if my mother's asleep and plz transfer him the money (also said to transfer it first to my own account so if she finds out then I can say my friend needed it so I have lent some for a month or two🙂 ) I mean maybe I could if I really wanted to but I have had enough, I do not want to steal. Now his family is potentially loosing the shop and he is blaming me for it. I have repeatedly tried to reason with him and told him that if I had the money in my account I would have given him (My account had 1k and I transferred him that😔). He says his blood relatives (his father's siblings refused to pay even a dime, I mean they and their children all are grown ups and have jobs and if They didn't pay how does he expect me, who does not has never had a job give him money, probably it's my fault I have enabled him enough every down time by giving him money so how he just expects everytime that I'll help bcz I am family).
He is still pressing me to give like 5k now bcz now he wants to go to another city and talk to the lender's brother to pls provide them with some Time. But I do not have the money 😕. I’m an incoming student, considered e2s2 (or eess) course during my applications as the idea of studying natural phenomena like earthquakes etc always fascinated me and I love the concept of overseas field trips in the cirriculum. However, after studying the GES and a long consideration, I ultimately chose another course that could command a higher salary for pragmatic reasons.
Over the past few weeks however I really questioned myself if it was a right move to take up something I’m not as interested in for the $. Went down the rabbit hole of reading online about passion vs money and now I’m just more confused 🫠 There’s just some things that didn’t add up for me
First is that sustainability is a hot topic now, but why is it not translating into higher salaries similar to the tech boom (bes and e2s2 have a low median pay relative to other degrees in nus/ntu).
Second is that if cohort size is based on the workforce needs, would the small cohort indicate that sustainability is in fact not as huge as it is inflated to be? And that job opportunities are not so good.
Third would be that will an environment degree lock me into a largely government field (apart from some private oil gas companies), hence a possible explanation for low salaries and slow progression? And also lock me into an environment sector so it’s hard to climb out and career switch for other things. I understand that env is a small industry in sg as we have no natural disasters etc, but I do look to migrate overseas and work if possible like taiwan or japan where env impacts are more prevalent.
So yes, I am really contemplating whether to appeal over to e2s2 instead, but these are some queries holding me back, and I’m not sure if one can appeal for e2s2 as it is an interview course

I am about to receive a tenancy agreement (currently waiting for referencing) for a property led by Leaders and have been pushed into using their No Deposit Option (NDO) as they highlighted that the landlord prefers someone with this scheme as well as that I will profit from discounts on utilities. In short, the scheme seems to entails paying £56 a month instead of a deposit while getting access to some legal advice as well as discount portal.
However, after submitting my application (in which the NDO is also briefly mentioned) through their platform, including paying the holding deposit, I have now received access to their discount portal and realised that there is really nothing of value for me as I have similar or better discounts already through my employer. Further, and as also mentioned to Leaders during the call where they informed me about the "need" for the NDO to be considered by the landlord (or at least to improve my chances), I would have sufficient funds to cover a regular deposit.
Given the limited information provided thus far, I first misunderstood the advantages for the landlord and assumed that they also get some discounts, which is why they would be keen on it. Accordingly, I got back to Leaders via email with the request to propose to the landlord the use of a regular deposit while also offering a marginal increase in rent to make up for any potential loss in savings on their end, which was responded to with "They wish to stay on the terms agreed of the no deposit option as this offers many benefits to you and the landlord".
The flat is generally nice and located in an English city with a nightmare-ish housing market, so I would prefer to not destroy my chances. However, I am also not too inclined in paying for this NDO when I could simply have a regular deposit. From the application submission form, I remember that the NDO can be cancelled after three months and replaced by a regular deposit, which is what I am currently considering as I fear that, if I try to insist on having a regular deposit now, I would not only lose the chance to get the property but also the already paid holding fee.
Hence, I am wondering if anyone has experience with later cancellations of Leader's NDO. Is the landlord permitted to kick me out of the flat if I change this scheme during the tenancy? While I have not yet received a contract with any specifics, I was able to find at least an extract of it online.
Also, if I insist on having my application changed to a regular deposit now (without retracting it), would I lose the holding fee if not selected because of that? Note that, during the online application, the holding fee was paid prior to accepting the NDO option, so I have the feeling that, if the application fails because of the NDO, the fee should not be affected.

I'm in over my head and need help. I can't tell what the right thing is to do in my situation and I'm overwhelmed. We have 3 issues, gutter damage, roof damage, and water damage from a hail storm in March 2024.
We have gutters in the front of the house that would drain into the ground, with pop ups dispersing the water away from the house. In the storm, one of those gutters was damaged, and redirected water into a front corner of our home. The rush of hail and rain flooded the area, which then seeped down, and in through some crack in the foundation and flooded our basement. We had about 1/8th to 1/4 inch of water in half of the basement.
After we cleaned up, we called our insurance company. The agent told us to call ServPro to manage clean up. ServPro came out and said they were there on the claim number and went to work. There was no discussion of charges, or potential charges. The only thing I was asked to sign was a form saying that when they left, the equipment they were leaving (fans and humidifiers) was in my possession and my responsibility.
The adjustor came a week later and after only looking at the drain and being at the house for under 3 minutes said, "You aren't going to like this, but this isn't covered." His argument is that it was ground water, regardless of if the storm damaged the gutter causing the water to pool up.
We also had the roof inspected for damage.
The final outcome was total damage to our house that was covered was $5200 and our deductible is $5400. That was very suspicious.
We asked for a reinspection. That took nearly a month and half to get scheduled. When the new adjuster came, we didn't find out until after the inspector was on the roof that it was the same inspector as the first inspection. I asked how that was legal or right, as he is not incentivized to say he was wrong, and actually he is incentivized to keep his original estimate.
We had a roofing contractor out, and both they and the inspector completely disagreed on the damage to the roof. The roofing company said there was between 3-8 hits per 10' square from the hail and the inspector said it was 3 maximum.
The adjustor left saying his estimate was $4600 in damages.
ServPro says we owe them $7000 for the clean up, as the insurance isn't covering the water damage.
We've been given a bid of $56K to repair our roof and a separate bid of $11,500 to fix the basement and gutters.
I should note that literally dozens of other homes in our neighborhood have had their roofs repaired or replaced in this 2 month period of fighting, and all 3 of our neighbors (both sides and behind us) have had theirs replaced fully. I have a hard time believing my house, which has no tree coverage over the roof, was unscathed and yet all my neighbors, some of whom have tree cover over their house, all had their roofs replaced.
The roofing company referred me to a local appraiser, who said I should invoke the appraisal clause. He said he would come to the house and look at the situation first before we hire him and proceed with that.
He says we should not hire an attorney until after the appraisal clause is invoked, as if we do, the attorney fees would be covered by the insurance company.
I've done some online research and it seems mixed regarding should a homeowner invoke the appraisal clause or not. It seems to be a high cost to us (This appraiser is $1500 plus $250 for every 10K over 50K we are awarded) and a high risk that our appraiser and the insurance company's appraiser won't agree, which I've read can be 6 to 12+ months to resolve.
The appraiser told me on the phone that our water damage should be covered as it is "consequential water" not "ground water". I can't find anything in our policy using "consequential water" but he said not to share that term with our insurance agent, or they'd know we are in the process of hiring an appraiser. I tried to search online for this, and can't find anything specific about "consequential water" being covered or even talked about, yet he was adamant it was normal and covered.
I feel very out of my element and potentially being taken for a ride by everyone I talk to. I've had my insurance company for 31 years (Farmers) and never had a claim, and I'm very frustrated with this entire experience. I travel a lot for my work too (3 times in the last 4 weeks alone) and it makes meeting people at my home difficult, lengthening everything.
I really need some advice and guidance.

Hello! Honestly I’ve always wanted to do both md and phd eventually, but I struggled throughout undergrad and I think it might hinder my ability to get into a good dual program.
My gpa is 3.78 and sgpa 3.71, downward trend as grades peaked in my second year and dropped in the third. I tried to graduate in 3 years but had to withdraw from one class in the last semester spring 2023 due to health issues. I was supposed to take it online fall 2023 to graduate but then my mom’s cancer progressed and she passed away. So I’m just now finishing the class over a year from initially withdrawing, and it will have incomplete notation due to having to get an extension after my mom passed. No mcat yet.
My interest is oncology, specifically the one understudied cancer subtype that my mom passed from, as well as a specific type of immunotherapy. To date these two fields have never been combined in the way I really hope to be able to do in my future career.
My ECs will include 3000+ hours research (working toward 1st author publication but unlikely by application time, will probably have first author review), on an independently conceptualized project in translational cancer immunotherapy. Also have 200 hours shadowing and 50 hours hospital volunteering.
Basically my PI has offered to let me stay in my current lab for a PhD. I’ve been in this lab for two years and it is amazing, in my home city, at my top choice T20 school, and I would have a chance to combine my two niche research interests for which other labs/opportunities are very scarce. I’m leaning toward doing this and then maybe looking into accelerated 3 year Md programs later on since I’m fairly set on intended specialty. The average gpa for the combined program at this school and for most others with a potential research fit is above 3.9. I just don’t think there’s a chance I could get in.
Is there a reason to not do this? I know the main one is losing free tuition but what else? Thank you!

I am from India and have graduated with a BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications), majoring in cybersecurity, with a CGPA of 8.7. I was planning to pursue a master's degree, but I have found that the MCA course has little scope in the job market, especially in IT. It seems to be more of a nominal qualification. Therefore, I believe pursuing an MS in IT or a related field from a foreign university would be more valuable for my career.
However, due to family issues, I am unable to leave India to pursue any master's course unless it is online.

My wife and I are in a bit of a bind and could really use some advice. We need to move out of our current rental in less than two months because our landlady is selling the house. We're searching for a new place to rent in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin, but we've hit a major roadblock.
Here's what happened:
We found a property that seemed perfect: two double bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen with a living room, and the rent is €2460 per month. We attended the viewing, applied immediately, and submitted all the required documents. The agent asked for a deposit and a filled-out form, which we provided right away. Initially, everything seemed fine.
However, the agent called us later, asking about the ages of our children. We have two boys, aged 8 and 2. The next day, we received an email saying the landlady thinks the apartment is too small for a family of four and requested our IBAN to return the deposit.
We don't think the apartment is too small. The space seemed adequate for our needs, and we were prepared to make it work. I emailed the agent to express our surprise and asked for clarification. She mentioned that most residents in the building are older and might have "particularities." She also suggested that our 2-year-old would soon need his own bedroom and that the second bedroom is too small.
When I asked for more details about these "particularities" and any regulations regarding children needing separate rooms, the agent did not respond to my questions and only asked for our IBAN again.
We now feel discriminated against based on our family status. Everyone living in Ireland is aware of the housing crisis, and we are in a precarious situation needing to find a new place within two months. It's not that we can't afford the rent; there just aren't many available places. We want to stay in our current area because our older child goes to school here and the younger one is in a crèche, which took us a year to get into.
We feel we are being put at a disadvantage because we have kids.
We will continue searching for a new place, but we also feel obliged to report this to the Workplace Relations Commission. This was advised to us by Threshold, an organization in Ireland advocating for the prevention of homelessness.
