**1. Introduction**
Sundarban, the largest mangrove forest in the world, is a unique destination where adventure tourism and conservation efforts intersect. Known for its rich biodiversity, including the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger, Sundarban offers thrilling experiences while emphasizing the importance of preserving its delicate ecosystem. This blog explores the adventure activities available in Sundarban, the significant conservation efforts in place, and how these two aspects coexist to protect and promote this incredible region.
**2. The Unique Ecosystem of Sundarban**
The Sundarban forest spans over 10,000 square kilometers across India and Bangladesh, characterized by an intricate network of tidal waterways, mudflats, and small islands covered with mangrove forests. This diverse ecosystem supports a wide range of flora and fauna, making it a critical area for biodiversity. The region is home to over 400 species of wildlife, including the Royal Bengal Tiger, saltwater crocodile, spotted deer, and various bird species.
**3. Adventure Activities in Sundarban**
*Boat Safaris*
Boat safaris are one of the most popular ways to explore Sundarban. Navigating through the narrow creeks and rivers, visitors can witness the stunning landscape and catch glimpses of wildlife in their natural habitat. The thrill of potentially spotting a tiger swimming across a river or watching a crocodile basking in the sun makes boat safaris an unforgettable adventure.
*Bird Watching*
Sundarban is a bird watcher's paradise, with over 300 species of birds recorded in the region. The mangrove forests and wetlands provide ideal habitats for both resident and migratory birds. Commonly spotted species include the lesser adjutant stork, mangrove pitta, and various kingfishers. Bird watching tours often take visitors to specific spots known for high bird activity, providing ample opportunities for photography and observation.
*Jungle Walks*
Guided jungle walks offer an immersive experience into the heart of Sundarban. Walking through dense mangrove forests, visitors can learn about the unique flora and fauna, the importance of mangroves to the ecosystem, and the challenges faced by the region. These walks are usually conducted with the help of local guides who share their knowledge and insights, making the experience educational as well as adventurous.
**4. Conservation Efforts in Sundarban**
*Protection of the Royal Bengal Tiger*
One of the most significant conservation efforts in Sundarban is the protection of the Royal Bengal Tiger. This apex predator is crucial to the ecological balance of the region. Various measures, including anti-poaching patrols, habitat restoration, and monitoring through camera traps, are in place to safeguard the tiger population. The Sundarban Tiger Reserve, established in 1973, plays a pivotal role in these efforts.
*Mangrove Restoration Projects*
Mangroves are vital to the health of the Sundarban ecosystem, providing coastal protection, supporting fisheries, and acting as carbon sinks. Restoration projects focus on planting mangrove saplings, rehabilitating degraded areas, and educating local communities about the importance of mangroves. Organizations like the Sundarban Biosphere Reserve and WWF are actively involved in these initiatives.
*Community Involvement in Conservation*
Involving local communities in conservation efforts is essential for the long-term sustainability of Sundarban. Initiatives such as eco-tourism, sustainable fishing practices, and alternative livelihoods help reduce pressure on natural resources while providing economic benefits to the local population. Programs that train and employ locals as guides and rangers also foster a sense of ownership and responsibility towards conservation.
**5. Balancing Adventure Tourism and Conservation**
Balancing adventure tourism with conservation is crucial to ensuring that the natural beauty and biodiversity of Sundarban are preserved for future generations. Sustainable tourism practices, such as limiting the number of visitors, regulating boat traffic, and enforcing strict guidelines for wildlife encounters, help minimize the impact on the ecosystem. Educating tourists about the importance of conservation and encouraging responsible behavior is also essential.
**6. Case Studies and Success Stories**
Several success stories highlight the positive impact of conservation efforts in Sundarban. For example, the increase in the tiger population over the past decade is a testament to effective anti-poaching measures and habitat management. Similarly, mangrove restoration projects have successfully rehabilitated large areas of degraded land, providing critical habitat for wildlife and improving coastal resilience.
**7. Comparison Table: Adventure Activities vs. Conservation Efforts**

2024.05.13 23:22 WarlordofBritannia Dave Dombrowski: A Retrospective in Transactions

On August 18, 2015 the Boston Red Sox hired the late General Manager of the Detroit Tigers, Dave Dombrowski, to run the team, replacing Ben Cherrington. The development focused Cherrington had failed to follow up the Red Sox miracle 2013 season with even winning records in the two years since, though the farm system ranked among the very best in baseball and a wave of prospects had just hit the majors (among them, Xander Bogaerts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Mookie Betts, and Blake Swihart). Thus, the swapping of Cherington for Dombrowski was rightly interpreted as the Red Sox moving to a more assertive phase, to win now even at the expense of the player development system.
Ironically Dombrowski had been fired by the Tigers because of his belief that the organization’s competitive window had closed and that the team needed to rebuild; the Tigers gave the job to his former assistant who got one more winning season out of their aging core before the inevitabilities became insurmountable. By that time the Red Sox were in the midst of their second straight division crown of three, which climaxed with the single greatest season in franchise history. This is how Dombrowski built that team, as well as the fiscal panic that cost the Red Sox the greatest all around player in franchise history following it:
~2015~
November 13, 2015: Traded Logan Allen, Carlos Asuaje, Javy Guerra and Manuel Margot to the San Diego Padres. Received Craig Kimbrel.
The first major transaction of the Dave Dombrowski era set the pace for the next four years; trading four prospects for a relief pitcher constitutes the classic win-now move. In this case the Red Sox won the deal in both the long and short terms, as only Manuel Margot developed in regular at the major league level, and that at a position where the Red Sox were not in need (center field). Meanwhile Craig Kimbrel made the all-star team in each of his three seasons in Boston, the second of which was one of the greatest relief performances in the game’s history.
December 4, 2015: Signed David Price as a free agent, 217 million dollars over seven years.
At once the most maligned and most underrated move of the Dombrowski era as well as being the biggest, the David Price signing saw the Red Sox for the first time handout a nine figure contract to a free agent pitcher. This was all the more dramatic as they had alienated and traded away their own homegrown southpaw ace (Jon Lester) less than eighteen months before. This was also the first time with the Red Sox that Dave Dombrowski acquired a player he was he previously familiar with, perhaps slightly overpaying for that familiarity. Did we mention that this was largest contract ever given to a pitcher at time, too?
Price had a solid first season in Boston, leading the league in innings pitched with 230 and striking out nearly a man per inning. Nonetheless the first three years of his tenure were marked with mutual hostility towards the ever-ravenous Boston sports media, only alleviated after his fantastic 2018 postseason run. Aging and injuries limited both the quantity and quality of his performance in 2017 and 2019; this trend as well as his 31 million annum salary contributed to owner John Henry’s decision to offload Price even at the cost of Mookie Betts. If only for that last reason alone the David Price signing is one the Red Sox would likely not repeat in hindsight.
December 7, 2015: Traded Jonathan Aro and Wade Miley to the Seattle Mariners. Received Roenis Elías and Carson Smith.
The first of many times Dombrowski would be burned in pursuit of bullpen arms, this deal with Seattle comes down to Wade Miley for Carson Smith. Miley had been signed as a reclamation project by Cherrington before 2015 in the hopes that Miley could serve as a solid mid-rotation option, which he more or less fulfilled with just short of 200 league average innings. Smith on the other hand was coming off his first full season in the majors where he gave the Mariners seventy brilliant innings of high leverage relief pitching (2.31 ERA, 11.8 K/9, and only two home runs allowed).
In a twist of fate, this trade hurt both teams as Smith immediately got injured and only pitched 24 innings in the rest of his career while Miley bombed in Seattle en route to a midseason jettisoning. Yet he rebounded with Baltimore in 2017 and remains an effective if oft-injured starting pitcher to this day, currently with the Milwaukee Brewers.
~2016~
June 10, 2016: Drafted Bobby Dalbec in the 4th round of the 2016 amateur draft.
The once and future Red Sox, Quad A superstar Bobby Dalbec!
July 7, 2016: Traded Wendell Rijo and Aaron Wilkerson to the Milwaukee Brewers. Received Aaron Hill and cash.
With Pablo Sandoval well into his career of eating his way out of Boston, the Red Sox carried a gaping hole at third base from August 2012 to July 2017. One of the short term attempts at a fix featured the acquisition of infielder Aaron Hill, hoping that he and Travis Shaw could platoon for the rest of the 2016 season. The thirty four year old Hill had been decent in Milwaukee in the first half after two bad seasons, but he reverted to that form as soon as he put on a Red Sox uniform, posting a 54 OPS+ in 137 plate appearances. After another terrible eighty plate appearances for the Giants in 2017 Hill was done. On the bright side, the two players Dombrowski gave up for him never amounted to anything.
July 9, 2016: Traded Jose Almonte and Luis Alejandro Basabe to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Received Brad Ziegler.
Ziegler was an accomplished submarine righty who the Red Sox acquired for basically free to get same-sided batters out, a role which he fulfilled to perfection (1.52 ERA in 30 innings). Another clearly won trade for DD.
July 14, 2016: Traded Anderson Espinoza to the San Diego Padres. Received Drew Pomeranz.
At the time, Anderson Espinoza was a teenager in Single A while Drew Pomeranz had appeared to finally unlock his long-salivated over potential with an all-star appearance. Ideally the Padres were hoping Espinoza could eventually develop to that same quality while the Red Sox expected Pomeranz to fill the fourth spot in the rotation. Neither team got what they wanted, at least in 2016 or for most of thereafter; Espinoza immediately went down with a major arm injury which kept him from pitching professionally for five years. Pomeranz himself reverted to his pre-breakout level for the rest of the season, bounced back with a big 2017 (17-6, 3.32 ERA, a strikeout per inning across 174 frames) and then finally was the forgotten man on the 2018 pitching staff due to injuries and ineffectiveness (6.08 ERA in 74 innings, 66 strikeouts to 44 walks). At this point the thirty year old southpaw looked like the quintessential example of TNSTAAPP (There’s No Such Thing As A Pitching Prospect), another electric arm who would never match his potential due to injuries and command woes. Anyways, Pomeranz then seemed to resuscitate his career out of the bullpen for the 2019 Brewers and 2020-21 Padres with a sub-2 ERA across 70 innings in those three seasons…before injuries again struck. Though he has not pitched in the majors in three years he remains in the Dodgers minor league system, currently (where else) on the injured list.
December 6, 2016: Traded Victor Diaz, Luis Alexander Basabe, Michael Kopech and Yoán Moncada to the Chicago White Sox. Received Chris Sale.
It’s easy to forget now, but Moncada was not only a can’t miss prospect but one of the three best in all of baseball at the time, and Kopech was another Top 100 type. I’ve covered Kopech in my previous article on Red Sox pitching prospect busts but Moncada’s own failure to reach his ceiling was due more to injuries and a passive approach at the plate. Thus far into his career, Moncada has had two good seasons out of seven and played in at least 130 games in only three. With a strikeout rate of thirty percent, a declining walk rate, little power and less defense, he’s become a fourteen million dollar albatross even when on the field for the White Sox.
Sale, of course, had two Cy Young Award worthy campaigns before injuries and an ill-advised extension soured his final five seasons as a Red Sox. That extension will be discussed further when we come to it, but the trade on its own was inarguably a major victory.
Traded a player to be named later, Josh Pennington, Mauricio Dubón and Travis Shaw to the Milwaukee Brewers. Received Tyler Thornburg. The Boston Red Sox sent Yeison Coca (June 5, 2017) to the Milwaukee Brewers to complete the trade.
Yet another ill-fated trade for a relief pitcher, this time costing the Red Sox heavily in terms of value lost; Shaw went to become an all-star power bat at second and third base for the next two seasons in Milwaukee before his career petered out. Thornburg on the other hand contracted thoracic outlet syndrome from which he never recovered. Even if he had pitched well, the Red Sox could have used Shaw more than any setup man due to Dustin Pedroia’s career ending knee injury.
December 8, 2016: Signed Mitch Moreland as a free agent.
Mitch Moreland was a decent first baseman, but could Dave really not find someone better to play first over the next three years? Even if they cost more than $18.5 million?
December 20, 2016: Traded Clay Buchholz to the Philadelphia Phillies. Received Josh Tobias.
This was more of a psychic relief to Red Sox Nation than anything else, finally alleviating them of the constant confusion over which Bucholz would show up on the mound—the oft-injured and easy to hit version, or the dominating ace? Fittingly Clay’s last three seasons in the majors featured two horrid starts for Philly, sixteen dominating starts in Arizona, and then finally split the difference with a final dozen poor performances as a Blue Jay.
~2017~
June 12, 2017: Drafted Tanner Houck in the 1st round (24th pick) of the 2017 amateur draft.
Houck’s selection constitutes one-third of the total number of draft picks by Dombrowski that made which helped the Red Sox at the major league level (the other two being fourteenth round pick Kutter Crawford in 2016 and fellow first rounder Triston Casas in 2018); inability to find even depth pieces in the draft left the Red Sox farm system utterly void of impact talent by 2018.
June 23, 2017: Selected Doug Fister off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels.
As alluded to in my previous article, veteran GMs tend to reacquire players they were familiar with from previous stops. Fister had been an excellent fourth starter for the Tigers early in the 2010s but by 2017 the end was clearly staring him in the face; a 4.88 ERA in eighteen appearances (fifteen starts) just underlined this inevitable and unenviable conclusion.
July 26, 2017: Traded Shaun Anderson and Gregory Santos to the San Francisco Giants. Received Eduardo Núñez.
Nunez was the short-term solution to Pedroia’s knee injury. He turned out to be the medium-term solution too, as the degenerate condition of the incumbent’s affliction led DD to resign Nunez that winter. While fantastic down the stretch in 2017 this was a stretch of the infielder’s capabilities; Nunez suffered his own knee injuries and posted a remarkable -2.3 WAR as Boston’s primary keystone occupant over the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
July 31, 2017: Traded Gerson Bautista, Jamie Callahan and Stephen Nogosek to the New York Mets. Received Addison Reed.
Another deadline, another deal to reinforce the bullpen. Reed was inconsistent for the Red Sox during his two month stay, which turned out to be the penultimate chapter for his career—a poor 2018 in Minnesota marked the end of his major league career, an astonishingly quick demise even for a reliever.
~2018~
February 26, 2018: Signed J.D. Martinez as a free agent, five years and 110 million dollars.
The best free agent signing of the Dombrowski era, JD provided the power bat the Red Sox sorely lacked after Big Papi’s retirement. In his first and best season in Boston Martinez led the majors in both runs batted in and total bases, placed third in MVP voting, and earned Silver Sluggers at two different positions! He declined linearly from there, but remains a productive member of any team’s lineup to this day; he has spent the last two seasons as the Dodgers and now Mets’ DH, attempting to compensate for declining bat speed by sacrificing contact for power.
March 4, 2018: Signed Ryan Brasier as a free agent.
The quality of Brasier’s pitching is inversely proportional to the quality of the expectations laid upon him. Thus he alternates excellent if limited seasons with ostensibly healthier but more erratic contributions.
March 24, 2018: Traded Deven Marrero to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Received a player to be named later. The Arizona Diamondbacks sent Josh Taylor (May 15, 2018) to the Boston Red Sox to complete the trade.
Deven Marrero was the prototypical good-field/no-hit infielder. Taylor is yet another oft-injured reliever, though he at least gave the Red Sox two solid seasons as the primary southpaw in 2019 and 2021. After missing all of 2022, he was traded to the Royals for Adalberto Mondesi and a teenage infielder named Angel Pierre; while Mondesi knee injuries seem to have ended his career Pierre posted a .415 OBP in rookie ball last year. Keep an eye and ear out for him as he climbs through the minor league ranks.
June 4, 2018: Drafted Triston Casas in the 1st round (26th pick) of the 2018 amateur draft.
Get well soon. There’s only so much Bobby Dalbec a fan can take.
June 28, 2018: Traded Santiago Espinal to the Toronto Blue Jays. Received Steve Pearce and cash.
Moreland had never and would never hit southpaws, but it took until the middle of his second season in Boston for the Red Sox to provide him with a platoon partner. When they finally did so at least they chose one of the very best platoon players in the major leagues in Steve Pearce; Pearce of course would win the World Series MVP that should have gone to Price later that year.
July 25, 2018: Traded Jalen Beeks to the Tampa Bay Rays. Received Nathan Eovaldi.
Even had he not resigned with the team during the offseason, Eovaldi would have earned his place in Red Sox lore for his heroic six inning relief appearance in the World Series. We’ll discuss the extension later, but also note that Beeks is perhaps the only pitcher who the Rays failed to turn into a Cy Young contender. What’s the opposite of adding insult to injury?
July 30, 2018: Traded Ty Buttrey and Williams Jerez to the Los Angeles Angels. Received Ian Kinsler and cash.
With Nunez playing well below replacement level, the Red Sox needed a replacement for the replacement. Kinsler in his penultimate season at least provided a solid glove; just in case the Red Sox also picked up Brandon Phillips.
November 16, 2018: Signed Steve Pearce as a free agent. AND, December 6, 2018: Signed Nathan Eovaldi as a free agent.
These were covertly two of the worst transactions of the Dave Dombrowski era. Refusing to say goodbye to midseason rentals is risky enough, but the amount of money given to Pearce and Eovaldi also baffled reasonable explanations; a thirty-six-year-old platoon hitter at first base is replaceable enough, even when he’s not the weak side of the arrangement. Had Pearce played well and been healthy in 2019, perhaps the six and quarter million would have seemed mostly worth it; instead, he “hit” .180 in twenty nine games before retiring.
Meanwhile, Eovaldi’s lengthy injury history made it a minor miracle that he was healthy enough for the Red Sox during his three months in Boston—bringing him back for four years and sixty-eight million dollars can only be explained as a sentimental move, an excessive reward for that World Series performance. As could have been reasonably expected in December 2018, Nitro Nate only proved worthy of that contract in one out of four seasons; in the other three he was either injured for most of the season, ineffective, or both.
~2019~
March 23, 2019: Extended Chris Sale for five years, 145 million dollars.
It wasn’t the David Price contract that caused the fiscal panic that cost the Red Sox their best player since at least Carl Yastrzemski, not really. The Red Sox could have eaten that sunken cost, had it been the sole albatross on their pitching staff. But, of course, it was only one of three unnecessary contracts that Dave Dombrowski issued to injury-prone starting pitchers on the wrong side of thirty. Sale had already shown long term red flags in 2018, which argued for letting him play out his walk year in 2019 before possibly ponying up the cash to keep him. After all, the Red Sox also had to extend Xander Bogaerts as well as the inestimable Betts; those two would cost at least sixty million a year to retain. Since they were coming off the most dominant single season in franchise history, perhaps now was the best time to let go some of the chief contributors, before the Red Sox tricked themselves into trying to recapture lightning in a bottle…Well, you know what happened in reality.
Between them, Eovaldi, Sale, and Price cost the Red Sox $52 million in 2019 alone, then $67 million in 2020; accounting for other contracts (JBJ’s arbitration rang up $11 million, Bogey was extended for $20 million, and JD was on the books for about $24 million) that was at least $122 million dollars already assigned to six players entering 2020. Assuming a payroll of effectively $200 million, this would have left about thirty million to spend on the other twenty-odd players required to field a team after giving Mookie his presumed megadeal. Turning back to 2019, just like with the Tigers in 2015, Dave couldn’t even make his customary July trade for pitching; the acquisition of Andrew Cashner from the Orioles felt like a low-budget parody of his previous deadline splashes, which of course it was.
There’s the real reason Dave Dombrowski was fired—just as in Detroit his full throttle commitment to a win-now mandate from ownership eventually led to a top-heavy roster and barren farm system. Have fun while you can, Phillies Phans.

I'm sharing my positive experience with using a custom QR code with logo. It seems like a lot of what I've seen about QR codes here has been negative, but back in 2021, I was facing challenges keeping my small café thriving amid the lockdowns.
By pure chance, I stumbled upon the idea of using QR codes as a digital menu while reading a blog from a QR code-generating platform. I decided to give it a shot, and ever since then, incorporating QR codes into my business has made a remarkable difference.

2024.05.13 01:39 civitaiman Summary and evidence for known events. What do you think happened to the left arm?

BEST EVIDENCE
The best footage I have seen as a single continuous clip is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwV5GpmvxGM
I also thought this man's analysis was very good, in particular of the initial bump he receives on his right arm before everything else which is otherwise missed on the above other video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVFHk1LPWnc
There may also be another fin here between the ropes showing a different shark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwhBlxHICa4
SUMMARY OF KNOWN EVENTS
It is certainly obvious he was attacked by sharks. It is only uncertain how many sharks and exactly how the attack progressed. According to Shark Bytes, white sharks are rare in this area as the water is too warm, and there are no oceanic white tips in that area either (plus they have a very distinct appearance which does not match), so the big one must be a large Bull or Tiger shark I presume.
I believe it is possible it was just the big main shark and none others. It could have bumped him as it goes past him towards the boat (sharks often bump things to test if they are prey before biting), turned around in the water in front of him (making itself seen to all), followed him as he paddles away, then pulled him under. Angles and timings all fit.
Possibly others played a role as well or after that, though we could never know.
Regarding bull vs. tiger shark, one could probably only guess, but note: "the bull shark gets its name from its habit of ramming or bumping into its prey before attacking it."
The only few issues that come up for me that I don't think are adequately addressed:
1) LEFT ARM
It seems perhaps he is not using his left arm anymore after the big shark shows up at the start. However we do not see any injury occur to it at any time.
It is possible the arm is just being occluded by his body and he is doggy paddling with it under the water, but it perhaps does not seem this way. We only see the splash from the right arm when he is jolted forward by the shark attacking his leg but not his left arm suggesting it is not extended.
What do you think happened to it?
Do you think the giant shark that surfaced in front of him comes forward and bites it in that split second the camera pulls away? Or another unseen shark attacks the left arm quickly in this unseen moment? Or what exactly?
Or do you think it is possible he is doggie paddling with the left arm under the water and it just lines up with his body so you don't see it and it doesn't splash?
Given we hear him scream quite loudly twice when his legs are taken, he certainly can scream. We hear no screams from him at this earlier point, and I am not convinced his left arm is truly injured or attacked.
Try doggy paddling with your head turned over your right shoulder - your left arm will naturally dip deep into the water to stabilize you and it will line up right with your body on the angle he is on, looking hidden or motionless.
Furthermore, if that giant tigebull lunged at him and grabbed his left arm in that split second we would see the residual splashing as the camera goes back to him. Yet the water is calm.
So the only way I could imagine a left arm injury occurring in that tiny moment is if another small shark bit it under the water unseen and Cameron somehow (shock or whatever) didn't scream. I suspect this is not the case. Occam's razor.
I suspect we just don't see the left arm after he turns away, as it is under the water with him looking back over his right shoulder and doggy paddling. His swimming then looks funny because he lurches forward as the shark bites him. But this is no longer his natural swimming as it is driven by the shark.
What do you think?
2) LIFE PRESERVER
I have seen many people (like the otherwise good bearded guy I posted) claim he is swimming toward the life preserver when the big shark shows up in the start. They say it is seeing the shark that turns him away from it. However, we do not actually see any life preserver in the water or mentioned by anyone until he is already being dragged under.
Given that the camera pans away towards the life preserver as Cameron's legs are attacked and that is when everyone shouts "grab the buoy," I think the life preserver is only thrown in the water by the time the shark is coming up on his legs. It was not seen in the water nor mentioned before this.
I think the pan away towards the life preserver and shouts about it were a reaction to it being just thrown in the water at that moment.
This also suggests he had only just jumped in. The immediate crew response would have been throwing in a life preserver. This would only be delayed by how long it would take staff to be aware he jumped, retrieve it and throw it.
Thus I presume he was only in the water for seconds before this all was recorded (certainly <1 min before video starts, maybe <15-30 seconds).
3) THE "COVER UP"
Many people have suggested there has been a "cover up" of the fact that he was obviously eaten by one or more sharks. However, I believe this happened voluntarily by the wishes of all involved parties.
It is obviously not in the interest of Bahamas Tourism to publicize shark attacks. Nor Disney or whoever ran the boat cruise. But we also have evidence the parents did not want his death publicized as a shark attack either.
I presume this is likely because it is easier for the parents to pretend "no one knows what happened for sure" or "maybe the current took him" than to tell people "he got ripped apart by sharks because he jumped off a boat at night into shark infested waters."
This is documented in this article where officials explain the investigation into confirming the shark attack was called off at the parents' wishes.
There is no money to be made by the parents, as it was Cameron's decision to jump off. So there is no incentive for anyone involved to acknowledge the gruesome details of what actually happened. And I suspect that is likely the reason no one has spoken out much about it since.
4) NUMBER OF SHARKS
We see a shark with almost perfect certainty 4 times in the video:
  1. When he is bumped to the right at the start
  2. When it turns around in front of him
  3. When his legs are attacked and he is pulled down
  4. When a dorsal fin is later visible between the ropes
So theoretically, there could be evidence for 4 sharks. But I think #1-3 are most probably explained by the same likely bull shark that targeted him based on the timeline and path of motion.
It is unclear to me if #4 is likely the same shark or another. This would be impossible to know.
SIMPLEST EXPLANATION OF EVENTS
Simplest explanation is that he jumps in the water, creating a big splash, immediately drawing a nearby massive Bull (or Tiger). This bumps him on the right as it swims past him in the direction of the boat. Cameron throws his blind punches as a reaction. It turns around towards him, making itself visible to all. Cameron sees it and turns around as well swimming away, but it follows him and takes his legs. Just at this time the life preserver is thrown in. Cameron screams twice as the shark twists and thrashes and he is pulled under.
Possibly other sharks were in the water as well but I think this is adequate to explain everything.
Like most of you I find this whole video and story fascinating, terrifying, and haunting.
Any thoughts?

2024.05.09 18:50 Ok_Pay6836 Sefirat HaOmer - Day 17 - a long one!

Sefirat HaOmer - Day 17 - a long one!
I don’t get it - some of these numbers have been worn by multiple Jewish players of the 1930s; I couldn’t find any. But, I did spend some time researching whether Irv Stein (Irvin Michael Stein!) who played for the Athletics in 1932 was in fact not Jewish. I couldn’t find anything definitive, even on his tombstone. Then I looked at his son’s tombstone and…
https://preview.redd.it/irocbp97kfzc1.jpg?width=3917&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c07747f47f368ecc653f17a3b26ce0be556bf6c
https://preview.redd.it/kcr0nyk8kfzc1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0964b9b10debcd17976303636314e374c7dc8eb7
Another interesting one about #17 - Johnny Klippstein wore it for the Indians and Senators in 1960 and 1961 (he also played for the Cubs, Reds, Dodgers, phillies, Twins and Tigers in his 18 year career). Baseball Almanac has him listed as Jewish, but I had never heard that before. I found his tombstone at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Huntley, IL, which leads me to the conclusion that he did not identify as Jewish:
https://preview.redd.it/jt7928aikfzc1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0711e22d65725a46090d5bb7b64afdc514af74e5
And, while we are at it ….. Baseball Almanac also claims that Denny McLain was Jewish (and he wore #17 for most of his career, including in 1968 when he won the MVP and Cy Young Award). An article in the Am-Pol Eagle (a newspaper for Polish Americans) in 2016 included this “He confirmed that his mother, the former Betty Koss, was of Jewish Polish heritage, while his father was Irish American. Denny added that his mother’s family was very fortunate to leave Poland just before the German invasion of Poland prior to World War II.” A book review of Larry Ruttman’s American Jews & America’s Game in the New York Journal of Books included this line: “One striking story revealed that Denny McLain, then a minor-league pitcher, had been fined and suspended for shouting anti-Semitic remarks to opposing player Al Clark after a game.” And then I found this anonymous (!) comment from the jewornotjew blog from March 2009 (all typos in original): “How did Dennis ever get tagged as a Jew? Because someone here believed his pathological lying? I'm his first cousin, and his mother and mine were sisters, born in Detroit, were Polish-American, and were Roman Catholic. Dennis was baptized and educated Roman Catholic, having attented Ascension Grammer in Harvey, Illinois, and Mount Carmel High in Chicago.” I am done with that rabbit hole.
Others who wore #17 were Al Rosen for 9 games in his first season with the Clevelanders in 1947; Steve Hertz for the Colt 45s in 1964; Dave Roberts for the Tigers in 1976 and 1977; Bob Tufts for the 1981 Giants; Adam Greenberg for the Cubs in 2005; David Newhan for the Mets in 2007; Ike Davis for the A’s in 2015; Craig Breslow for the Marlins in 2016; and Kevin Pillar for the Braves in 2023.
You may remember from Day 12 that Hertz managed the Tel Aviv Lightning in the lone season of the Israel Baseball League. The Lightning finished the regular season in second place with a 26-14 (.650) record, and lost to the Modi'in Miracle in the playoff semifinals. He only played in 5 games in the majors. His first appearance was coming in as a defensive replacement to play 3b in the 9th in an April game against the Reds. He struck out to end the game in the bottom of the 9th. His 2nd game was on May 1 against the Cubs, and he again spelled Aspromonte at 3b to begin the 9th. In the bottom of the 9th, he was the second Colt 45er to bat, and he reached 2nd on an error (by Lou Brock) - he came around to score when Staub reached on an error by Ernie Banks; but, the Cubs won. 19 days later, he pinch hit in the 6th and struck out and was lifted for the pitcher. On the last day of May, he pinch ran for Aspormonte in the 7th and scored, and then did not play defense. He played in his last game on June 7, 1964, striking out as a pinch hitter in the 6th inning and did not play defense. So, to cut to the chase: Hertz had 4 plate appearances, with no hits, no walks, and 2 runs. His slash line was .000/.000/.000. On defense, he had one chance and one put out.
And, you may remember from Day 10 that Adam Greenberg also played for the Marlins wearing that number. Adam made his MLB debut on July 9, 2005 for the Cubs against the Marlins. He came in as a pinch hitter for the pitcher in the top of the 9th to face Valeria de los Santos. On the very first pitch he saw, he was struck in the side of the head, suffering a skull fracture and was removed from the game. Carlos Zambrano ran for him and did end up scoring. But, Adam suffered from dizziness, double vision and other physical effects for years. He attempted a comeback, but could not make it. In 2012, a Cubs fan started an online campaign to get him another big league plate appearance. The Marlins offered him a one-day contract to play in their October 2, 2012 home game against the Mets. He led off the bottom of the 6th as a pinch hitter and walked up to the song "Dream On" by Aerosmith. After a standing ovation, he struck out on 3 pitches by eventual Cy Young Award winner, R. A. Dickey. His slash line ended up being .000/.500/.000, but if he did not take that at bat in 2012, he would have had a 1.000 OBP.

2024.05.09 14:12 docbosh Interesting TV series

In the last couple of years I watched a 6 part British TV series called Turn Back Time https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/tv/entries/626d111d-0a69-3d71-bb92-55e34dfbf620
They looked at the modern high street in 6 eras, the Victorian, Edwardian, 1930s, WWII, 1960s and 1970s.
I realize that with every piece of media consumed, asking the question of who produced it and what was their agenda is very important. After all media manipulates, sometimes purposefully and inadvertently. Nevertheless my main take away was that it was supermarkets that really had super negative effects on economies, also robbing us of craftspeople and artisans in the process.
I am pleased to say that I am years ahead of the curve in terms of 'boycotting' large supermarket chains. I live 200 metres from a supermarket and only use them in emergency "I need an ingredient" purposes... and if a sales item is too good to pass up. I would rather get my food at independents, meat from butchers, fish from fishmongers, bread from bakeries, fruit and vegetable stores et cetera. I believe in supporting local economies, like villages of yore.
That has been me for years, and it even increased during and following Covid. So personally I can pretty much hold the line of not shopping at the big 5 indefinitely. I use Giant Tiger and Dollarama along with Costco (but not fruit and vege as they are too expensive) to round out what I can't generally get at my local shop (as per above). I also use wholesalers and buy large format items. I realize this isn't super practical for all, I have the luxury of having done an education in Professional Cooking. I have long eschewed all but a small handful of processed and ultra processed food. This is why Home Economics is such an important part of education that should not be overlooked, it should be mandatory imho.
Anyways, I thought I would share a bit more to encourage people to take the boycott as far as it can go, by not only avoiding Loblaws and its sub brands but all big 5 and sub brands until things generally improve or they go start to go out of business, whichever comes first.

2024.05.08 11:37 SinisterRoomba Typical WMAF Hapa here, I've learnt what it truly means to be Eurasian. This is my story.

I used to have the typical hapa family. My White Male dad was the stoic, rational, and peace-motivated mediator of the family, while my Asian Female mom was the artist, a political refugee for helping organize the 1989 Tiananmen Square Protests, with borderline personality disorder and possibly schizoptyal personality disorder. My parents got married because my WM dad thought she was a beautiful soul, and AF mom married him because she thought he was a simple and kind American guy, for she was old and tired from all the drama she's had with Chinese and European intellectuals and artists. Again, all typical WMAF bullshit that I am ashamed of.

But everything changed the day we went to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History... We learnt about the history of human races there. There used to be a total of about 9 human species/races, including Homo Erectus, Homo Habilis, Homo Heidelbergensis, Homo Denisovan, and Homo Neanderthalis, but now there is only 1 race left, Homo Sapien. However, long ago, Homo Sapiens interbred with Homo Neanderthalis, who were the original Europeans/Asians before our race went there, resulting in Eurasian populations today having a genome composed of about 1-3% Neanderthal DNA.
East Asians have the most Homo Neanderthalis DNA. West Asians (Europeans) have an average amount, and Sub-Saharan Africans are the most pure Homo Sapien. Otherwise, all 'races' today are social constructs and cultural.
Since learning about this, I have decided to honor my racial heritage and mixture. I used to have a great relationship with my LMIF girlfriend (Lesothan Male Inuit Female). The love was there, the sex was amazing, it was perfect. Excercising my Neanderthal side didn't make me stop loving her, but she stopped loving me... She didn't respect how it's in my ancestry to go HOOGH HOOGH HOOGH HOOGH when having sex. That wasn't the line for her though... no, the racist bitch decided it was "insane" that I wanted us to move to Finland and live by a lake. I saw an ad from Ancestry.com where a lady travelled to all the places that her genes came from, and I simply wanted to do the same... except permanently. I convinced her to come, told her that it would honor her Inuit ancestry to, at least for a while, live in the Arctic.

I. Treated her. Like a queen. I did all the hunting, crafting, and cooking. I made her a tunic and loincloth out of deer skin from the deer that I jumped off a tree and clubbed the head of. I caringly taught her how to eat around the sarcocystis parasites in the venison. I picked the lice out of her hair and even offered them to her to eat instead of me. I even lowered my voice when having sex into hoogh hoogh hoogh, so to please her. Also so I wouldn't attract any saber-tooth tigers at night, which I learned are our main predators. And all the stupid bitch would do is sit there and cry. "Why are you doing this?" and "This isn't you." and "Please, baby, let's go home." and "Xiumin, I love you... Don't do this to us." I yelled at her. "MY NAME TUG." and I... I uh... clubbed her in the head.

She's ok. She didn't die or anything. But we broke up after that. It was a mutual thing, you know. She just wasn't up with being the new man that I was, and I wasn't up to her racism.

For a while I was lost. I roamed the Eurasian North, until I ended up at the Pacific ocean in Kamchatka Krai. Looking across the ocean in the direction of what would be Canada, I knew it was time to go home.

I returned to my family, feeling lost and uncertain. Was Xiumin still inside me, alive somewhere, screaming out? Or did I evolve into the Tug I was meant to be? Perhaps was all along? I needed comfort. By then, my hair was long (kinda like this guy), my mesomorphic body all stocky and buff from the walking and venison, and my beard was beard. I rang the doorbell of my parents' place. My mom opened the door, and I saw her eyes sparkle with tears due to happiness from missing me so much. "Son, it's you... Oh my god. I knew it, I knew you were alive, I knew you would come home to mama. By baby Xiumin is safe at home" and she began weeping. I clubbed her in the face and yelled "MY NAME TUG". I walked in, taking in the smells of my old life, flashbacks to when the Sapien side of me had his childhood under this roof, in these rooms. It felt... strange. Neanderthals never made it to North America. But here I was, realizing that I was a North American.
I dragged my mom across the floor in front of the couch, sat down, and pondered the most important mysteries of life... Was I Eurasian or North American? Was I Pink (West Asian)? Or Yellow (East Asian)? These are serious things... These are what we should be focusing our emotions and attention on... I am glad this sub exists to divide people into WMAF and AMWF. I'm glad that we can make a big deal out of it. I'm glad we get to talk about how frustrating it is that people mistake us for Latinos, and how suffering it is that White people see us as Asians and Asians see us as White. I'm glad we get to talk about these over and over and over again.
I got up from the couch walked outside to the backyard, bringing a bottle of liquor with me. I got in my hot tub, and sipping from my glass of imported Japanese Whiskey, I realized, Blacks and Latinos just don't understand the hardships of being half-asian. Just look at this chart, Hapas aren't even on there. All my life, I've fretted over the crisis of whether I should identify with Whites or Asians. I've suffered from the White Patriarchy of my dad's existence, the way he was White, and also all Patriarchy-y, but I've also experienced the terrible abuse from my Asian tiger mom pushing me to do well in school. I thought to myself -- maybe, I should look past those, and think of myself as the next generation product of humans, who for hundreds of thousands of years diverged across the globe, now reuniting from everywhere and making love, whether it be through fetishizing or sexual attraction to those who look different, or it be something deeper, something about wanting to share life together and build a brigther future, maybe I should see myself as a symbol of Hope and Love, a symbol of what it means to be Human.

No that's fucktarded. Me Tug.

That's it, that's genuinely the answer to all our Hapa woes. You, reader, everyone on this sub, you're a Neanderthal person. This is how we consolidate the East and West. This is how we get your parents to respect each other. This is how solve racism. This is how we de-escalate military tensions and nuclear armament between China and America. Call each other Neanderthals. Spread the revalation. Spread the revolution. Get into politics and say the truth.

Identity Theory states that cooperation and empathy emerges when there is a shared identity, and the shared identity becomes more salient when both are confronted with another outside identity.

Lotte scored 6 points with 2 walks, 1 out, 1st and 2nd bases, 5 hits and a sacrifice fly, and quickly turned the score around 7-2.
Lotte, who added 1 run in the 8th inning due to an error, celebrated victory with Yoon Dong-hee hitting a solo home run in the top of the 9th inning.
Lotte Ko Seung-min and Reyes swung hard hits with 4 hits in 6 at-bats.
In Incheon, NC Dinos defeated SSG Landers 8-6.
SSG took a 2-0 lead with Girermo Heredia, who has been swinging a bat recently, scoring one RBI in the first and third innings.
In the top of the 5th inning, with bases loaded and 2 outs, NC tied the score at 2-2 with Min-Woo Park's 2-RBI hit to right-handed, and then A-Seop Son hit to left-handed to make it 3-2.
In the 6th inning, Park Geon-woo's 2 RBI hit was followed by Matthew Davidson's double to make it 6-2.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, when SSG was down 3-7, Heredia's solo home run was followed by Cho Hyeong-woo's 2 RBI hit to trail 6-7.
However, NC took the win in the top of the 7th inning with the bases loaded and no outs, adding 1 point with an infield grounder by Cheon Jae-hwan and running away with a score of 8-6.
NC closer Lee Yong-chan made a relief appearance in the bottom of the 8th inning with 1 out and runners on 1st and 2nd bases, striking out 3 in 1⅔ innings and protecting the team's victory with no hits and no runs.
On this day, the KBO League recorded the largest single-day attendance this season with 104,949 people attending five stadiums across the country, including sold out stadiums in Jamsil, Daegu, and Gwangju.

These should work with other RCs with a slow cooker function and timer. Or a porridge setting should work. The "tacook" cooking plate sits above the rice- think steamer basket with solid bottom and steam / heat coming up the sides- , and both cook together

2024.05.06 01:02 ObsessiveImpulse Ballot Banter #59 Recap

I know it’s late. I’m nearing the end of my school semester, so I’ve been a little swamped with work.
Heaven Ascension DIO VS Infinity Ultron (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven VS Marvel’s What If?)- After the others explain the premise of the two characters, Sam says it sounds cool, and finds it a little easier to research “what if” characters. DJ says that “DIO is absolutely losing this”. Billy wants it to start with Ultron trying to cut DIO in half like he did to Thanos, only for it to fail to work.
Wasp VS Tinker Bell (Marvel VS Disney)- Speedy calls it a very funny idea, and says that it sucks that it’s such a stomp because it’d be really fun. DJ asks about Kingdom Hearts, and Speedy responds that the Wasp still stomps, bringing up a time her stingers burned off the Sentry’s flesh, though KH could still make it “seem closer”.
Noah & Mio VS Alphen & Shionne (Xenoblade Chronicles 3 VS Tales of Arise)- DJ doesn’t know much about Tales of Arise, but says Noah and Mio are cool. Sam says it seems like a pretty good MU.
Gunvolt VS Lucia (Azure Striker Gunvolt VS Punishing: Gray Raven)- They haven’t heard of Punishing: Gray Raven, but upon finding out it’s a gacha, DJ jokes that his interest has completely diminished.
Roxas VS Starkiller (Kingdom Hearts VS Star Wars)- Sam thinks it’s very cool. Speedy says that the issue is that there’s a ton of Star Wars VS Kingdom Hearts MUs “and they kind of all go the same way”. Billy says that Starkiller comes from a branch of the Star Wars franchise that’s “a little more ridiculous than normal”, but Roxas still probably stomps. DJ says that Roxas is the coolest KH protagonist, so he’d be totally fine with him winning. Speedy and Sam similarly find Starkiller cool and want to use him.
Meta Knight VS Schezo Wegey (Kirby VS Puyo Puyo)- After recalling how hilarious they found Schezo’s name in an earlier episode, Sam says it seems cool, and Speedy says they need to use Meta Knight eventually.
Baiken VS Dunban (Guilty Gear VS Xenoblade Chronicles)- DJ “doesn’t hate it at all”, saying that Baiken is one of his favorite Guilty Gear characters, and he likes Dunban from what he knows about him (though he’s never played Xenoblade 1).
The Mask VS Freakazoid- They all love it, especially Billy, with Speedy commenting that it’d be great to “give the Mask a challenge”. Ben joins the stream at this point, and also says it’s a good MU.
Juri VS Surge (Street Fighter VS Sonic the Hedgehog)- Sam is surprised to see a Street Fighter VS Sonic MU, finding it to be a very weird pairing. Billy calls it very strong thematically, with some more discussion about the exact details of the connections ensuing.
Mirajane VS Terra (Fairy Tail VS Final Fantasy)- Sam doesn’t have much to say about it, other than that Final Fantasy VI is a great game. Speedy says that Terra completely stomps.
Finn & Jake VS Mordecai & Rigby (Adventure Time VS Regular Show)- The entire crew loves it and really wants to do it. Sam talks a bit about how much he loves Regular Show. Billy thinks that Mordecai and Rigby stomp, to which DJ and Speedy say it’s closer than a lot of people think.
Nemesis VS Subject Delta (Resident Evil VS Bioshock)- They mostly just talk about Delta’s design, but Ben calls it a good MU at the end.
Anime Character Doesn’t Explain Their Abilities VS Anime Villain Didn’t Explain Their Powers (RDCworld1 VS Cilvanis)- Sam quickly says that he gets it and that RDCworld is funny.
Piccolo VS Knuckles (Dragon Ball VS Sonic the Hedgehog)- DJ has “come around to really liking this one”, and everyone else agrees it’s pretty good.
Goku VS Jin Mori (Dragon Ball VS The God of High School)- DJ expresses mixed feelings on The God of High School, thinking it fell off by the end. Speedy comments that he’s only ever seen TGOHS discussed in the context of whether or not Mori could beat Goku (“He cannot”, says DJ).
Leonardo VS Nightwing (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles VS DC)- DJ loves Leo, but wants to cover another individual Ninja Turtle before going back to Leo. Old Man Logan VS The Last Ronin gets brought up again (Ben likes it). Sam says he gets what OP was going for with Leo VS Nightwing.
Gilgamesh VS The Emperor of Mankind (Fate VS Warhammer 40k)- They discuss whether or not they could do a 40k character without getting in trouble with Games Workshop.
Naofumi Iwatani VS Maple (The Rising of the Shield Hero VS Bofuri)- Billy asks “does Bofuri also fall off really hard, really fast?” Speedy has a friend who’s really into the MU, but he doesn’t know anything about either character. When Sam points out that they both have shields, Speedy jokingly suggests pitting them both against Captain America.
Wamuu VS Jetstreem Sam (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure VS Metal Gear)- DJ says it’s cool, and Speedy notes that he’s never seen a Wamuu MU “in the wild”. The discussion is otherwise mostly about the characters and not the MU.
Slayer VS Demitri (Guilty Gear VS Darkstalkers)- They understand the appeal of the MU, and note how powerful both universes are, though Speedy says that Guilty Gear probably “absolutely shits on Darkstalkers”.
Toph VS Terra (Avatar: The Last Airbender VS Teen Titans)- Speedy likes it a lot. DJ brings up the G1 blog, and how, according to it, Toph has counters to all of Terra’s abilities, but Terra is way stronger. Speedy says that Terra should ultimately win via outstating. Sam also calls it super cool.
Darkrai VS Count Bleck (Pokepark VS Paper Mario)- They’re surprised to see Pokepark get brought up. They like Count Bleck, and Sam calls it “wild” and “very unique”.
Superboy-Prime VS Gwenpool (DC VS Marvel)- Sam and Billy both find it weird, but DJ loves it. Speedy finds it very cool thematically, but can’t imagine the two of them fighting. They then talk about all the fourth wall shenanigans that would be included in the fight.
Black Star VS Yoh (Soul Eater VS Shaman King)- DJ calls Black Star “my GOAT”. Speedy explains how the two series have very similar power systems, and wonders why they aren’t pit against each other more.
Lapis Lazuli VS Rei Ayanami (Steven Universe VS Neon Genesis Evangelion)- Speedy doesn’t understand it at all, finding the connections to be massive stretches. DJ questions the idea of giving Rei Third Impact (as suggested by the OP), and the others agree they wouldn’t give it to her, especially considering it requires so much preparation it would basically take up the entire fight animation.
Dark Pit VS Lilith (Kid Icarus VS Darkstalkers)- They’ve never seen it before, but they all like it and think it makes sense (Sam calls it “way better than Zagreus VS Pit”).
Dino Charge Red Ranger VS Kamen Rider Dragon Knight- They like the combo of Power Rangers VS Kamen Rider. Sam says that a dragon obviously beats a T-Rex.
The Mask VS Beetlejuice- DJ really wants to use Beetlejuice. Mixed feelings are expressed on the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel, and Erin recommends the Beetlejuice musical (based). Billy notes that both characters have done DC crossovers.
Reigen Arataka VS Stanley Pines (Mob Psycho 100 VS Gravity Falls)- Erin likes it. Speedy finds it a funny comparison, and says he isn’t sure if he wants it as a Death Battle, but really wants to see the two of them have a conversation. Sam agrees, saying it’s the type of MU that’s worth doing mainly for the banter potential. Speedy and Erin both think that Stan wins.
Sonic VS Mega Man- After some discussion about the Archie crossover, DJ says “I’ll take it if Mega Man wins”. Speedy says that it’s a pretty obviously good MU, but Sonic comes up so much in the community that he’s a little tired of seeing it.
Godspeed VS Death Rider (DC VS Marvel)- They don’t know who Death Rider is. From what they can figure out, it gets described as “better Ghost Rider vs. bargain bin Flash”, to which Sam says “you would need to be a much better Ghost Rider to fight even bargain bin Flash”. Sam thinks Cosmic Ghost Rider might be more interesting. Ben finds the concept of “Speed Force vs. Penance Stare” to be interesting, and he likes the idea of comparing two different powersets that are different in how they work, but similar in their greater concept, noting that “not every Death Battle needs to be a mirror match”. Sam suggests “could you outrun the Penance Stare?” as a Desk of Death Battle episode.
Rena Ryuugu VS Yuno Gasai (Higurashi When They Cry VS Future Diary)- None of them know much about either series, besides DJ, who says that Future Diary is “ass” and that if it shows up, he’s “going to sleep”.
N VS Blade Wolf (Murder Drones VS Metal Gear)- They’re surprised that Murder Drones has shown up so much in Ballot Banter. They don’t really talk about the MU.
Lucina VS Ciri (Fire Emblem VS The Witcher)- Sam says that Ciri’s really cool, and it would be a fun fight. Speedy says that the only thing he knows about this MU is that “people are kind of annoying about it sometimes”, but he still thinks it seems cool. Sam thinks it’d be weird to do Ciri before Geralt.
Geno VS Vivi (Super Mario RPG VS Final Fantasy IX)- Sam calls it an “absolute heater”, and the others agree that it’s solid. DJ thinks that Geno is “kinda mid”. Sam says the two characters are “peak old Squaresoft character design”. DJ jokes that he’s rooting for Vivi because he’s in Mario Hoops 3-on-3.
Firestar VS Starfire (Marvel VS DC)- They find it funny as a meme, but don’t seem to actually think it’s a good MU (“Firestar… ehhhhh”, says Speedy).
Jon Moxley VS Trevor Philips (AEW VS Grand Theft Auto)- Sam finds it weird to use a wrestling persona in DB, but, after some further discussion, says that it wouldn’t be impossible to do. Billy says a wrestler vs. a GTA character should be a fairly even match. Ben has no idea how they’d approach Trevor, since “he’s just some guy who’s got really bad issues”. The others argue that you can get some good durability feats in GTA gameplay, but Ben still seems skeptical.
Springtrap VS Junko (Five Nights at Freddy’s VS Danganronpa)- DJ calls it “alright”, but has other characters he’d prefer against Junko. Speedy similarly says that Springtrap and Junko would both be fun characters to bring in, just not against each other.
Shadow VS Siris (Shadow Fight VS Infinity Blade)- Sam is surprised to see it, because he hasn’t thought of Infinity Blade in years. None of them have ever heard of Shadow Fight.
Luz VS Anne (The Owl House VS Amphibia)- DJ says that, “from a Death Battle perspective”, he’s glad that Titan Luz exists in order to even the playing field against Calamity Anne (Erin notes that the last minute introduction of Titan Luz was what allowed her to win the Cast debate).
Enrico Pucci VS Sakuya Izayoi (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure VS Touhou)- Ben leaves at this point. DJ says that Sakuya’s great, and he’s coming around to Touhou because he’s super into Touhou Luna Nights. Speedy assumes that Sakuya wins since she can stop time, but DJ points out that Made in Heaven was able to shorten Star Platinum’s time stops. This debate continues with Speedy arguing that Sakuya’s time stop has no time limit, and DJ arguing that Made in Heaven can fight on par with GER in Eyes of Heaven.
Azula VS Cinder (Avatar: The Last Airbender VS RWBY)- Sam quickly says it “kicks ass” and is a “good one”.
Akuma VS Raoh (Street Fighter VS Fist of the North Star)- DJ absolutely loves it. Speedy says any excuse to use Akuma is based, and Sam says any excuse to use a Fist of the North Star character is based, saying that Jotaro VS Kenshiro was his favorite episode to work on.
Colton White VS John Marston (Gun VS Red Dead Redemption)- They seem pretty indifferent to it. DJ isn’t into Red Dead, calling it “the lamest Rockstar game”, but does think that John Marston is cool.
Bender VS Roger (Futurama VS American Dad)- There’s some mixed feelings on American Dad among the crew. They understand the premise, and DJ says it “vibes well” and he likes it. Sam says he’ll take any opportunity to rewatch Futurama.
Plastic Man VS Luffy (DC VS One Piece)- None of them like it, noting that Plastic Man stomps terribly. DJ likes both characters, but not against each other, and feels the same way about Luffy VS Mr. Fantastic. Speedy says that Mr. Fantastic VS Plastic Man is pretty fun, though, which the others agree with.
Lex Luthor VS Doctor Doom (Super Friends VS Super Hero Squad)- Sam says he sees what OP was going for, and that “this hits” and it’d be fun. Speedy brings up that SHS Doctor Doom has the Infinity Sword, and says even the most powerful Super Friends characters are only planet-level.
Garland VS Oersted (Final Fantasy VS Live A Live)- DJ says that Lousy would be really into it if he were there.
Lion VS Tiger- DJ says that the tiger wins, and the others agree (though Sam says he’d rather be turned into a lion than a tiger). Erin explains how tigers are largely solitary hunters, while lions are pack hunters, and female lions are the ones who mostly do the hunting, so the tiger wins by nature, especially if both are male.
Squidward VS Bakugo (SpongeBob SquarePants VS My Hero Academia)- Sam is confused. Speedy calls it a funny joke, but doesn’t get people who take it seriously. DJ says the entire joke is seeing a serious anime character get stomped by a goofy cartoon character, and Speedy, in response, guesses that the MU is only liked by people who “judged Bakugo off of Chapter 1 and never recovered from that”.
Lego Batman VS Lego Spider-Man- Sam loves a live action picture the OP submitted. Luis says it’s “honestly a sick matchup”.
Springtrap VS Jack Baker (Five Nights at Freddy’s VS Resident Evil)- Speedy says they’re on fairly similar power levels to his knowledge. Billy notes how “gross and grungy” the two of them look, and DJ says “that battle’s gonna stink”, making Sam joke that they’ll do this battle “when they get Smell-o-Vision”.
Xenomorphs VS Necromorphs (Alien VS Dead Space)- Sam says it’s fun and cool, but notes that some Necromorphs are ginormous, and doesn’t think that Xenomorphs get that big. Billy asks if the Xenomorphs would be able to adapt to Necromorph biology and take them over since they aren’t really alive.
Lelouch VS Char (Code Geass VS Mobile Suit Gundam)- Speedy says that Char is the coolest part of the original Gundam series. Sam notes how giant robots fight often face the issue of a massive size difference.
Kaido VS Acnologia (One Piece VS Fairy Tail)- Sam doesn’t know much about either character, so the others explain them to him. Speedy says that it’s really cool.
(Skipped Matchups: Cole MacGrath VS Alex Mercer, Ragna the Bloodedge VS Velvet Crowe, Lightning VS Shulk, Eren Yeager VS Ken Kaneki, Terumi VS Sinestro, Mickey Mouse VS Bugs Bunny, Kasen Ibaraki VS Fleetway Sonic, Kratos VS Asura, Pennywise VS Freddy Krueger)

"Telf fil-piż: L-injezzjonijiet huma r-risposta biex tiġi indirizzata l-obeżità?

Inti ma tistax taħrab l-hype madwar injezzjonijiet telf ta 'piż.

Il-midja soċjali hija mimlija stampi ta’ qabel u ta’ wara. Huma s-sors ta 'gossip selvaġġ dwar l-istilel ta' Hollywood, u issa s-Servizz Nazzjonali tas-Saħħa tar-Renju Unit se jħallas għalihom.

Tista' tifhem l-appell. Il-piż żejjed jaffettwa s-saħħa tagħna u jwassal għall-istigma - u l-mantra ta '""dieta u eżerċizzju"" sempliċement falla għal ħafna nies.

Imma għandna nkunu qed insejħu s-semaglutide, il-mediċina in kwistjoni, ""miraklu"" jew ""skinny jab"" meta xi tobba jaħsbu li hija kontroversjali daqs it-trattamenti? Il-hype jaqbel mar-realtà? Jew qed nonqsu milli nindirizzaw il-kawżi tal-obeżità u sempliċement nikkunsinnaw lin-nies għal ħajjithom medikazzjoni?

Linja griża qasira ta' preżentazzjoni
Jan, minn Kent, kien wieħed mill-ewwel nies fid-dinja li ħa sehem fil-provi tas-semaglutide. Jinbiegħ bħala Wegovy għal telf ta 'piż u bħala Ozempic għad-dijabete, għalkemm xi nies ilhom jixtru din il-verżjoni biex jitilfu l-piż.

Ilkoll nafu lil xi ħadd bħal Jan, li pprova kull dieta, u ilha tiġġieled il-qadd tagħha ħajjitha kollha.

Semaglutide jimita ormon li jiġi rilaxxat meta nieklu. Tqarraq lill-moħħ biex jaħseb li aħna mimlijin u jnaqqas l-aptit sabiex nieklu inqas.

Ladarba Jan bdiet tieħu l-injezzjonijiet, ir-relazzjoni tagħha mal-ikel kienet tant ta’ trasformazzjoni li qaltli li kien jew minħabba d-droga jew “stajt ġejt maħtuf minn aljeni”.

Għall-ewwel darba setgħet tidħol ġo kafetterija, tara shortbread ta’ xi miljunarju u ma jkollhiex ġisimha jgħajjat, “Għandi bżonn wieħed”.

Minflok kien, ""Ma nħossx bil-ġuħ... ġismi kien qed jgħid li ma tridx, ma kontx jien qed nuża r-rieda,"" tgħid.

Ir-riżultati ta 'semaglutide huma innegabbli - għall-inqas għal xi żmien.

Bħala medja, nies li kienu obeżi tilfu madwar 15% tal-piż tal-ġisem tagħhom meta ħadu semaglutide flimkien ma 'pariri dwar stil ta' ħajja tajjeb għas-saħħa fi prova. Innota li din mhix ""jab skinny"" - 15% tieħdok minn 20 ġebla 'l isfel għal 17.

Dak l-istudju wera li l-piż ħareġ matul l-ewwel sena u mbagħad stabbilizza għat-tliet xhur li fadal tal-prova. Ma nafux x'jiġri meta n-nies jieħdu d-droga għas-snin.

Jan tilef 28kg (aktar minn erba’ ġebla). Fisser li fl-aħħar setgħet tgawdi r-rigal ta’ għeluq is-60 sena tagħha – titjira f’ajruplan Tiger Moth, wara li kienet qabżet il-limitu ta’ piż massimu qabel. ""Kont itir f'aktar minn modi wieħed, u tifel ħadt gost.""

Jan ħa sehem fil-ġuri
Titlu tal-immaġni,
Jan wara titjira f'Duxford Aerodrome f'Settembru 2019, li tgħid li kien ikun impossibbli qabel it-telf ta' piż tagħha b'erba' ġebla waqt li tieħu semaglutide
Ir-riżultati jidhru aktar konvinċenti mid-dieta tipika tiegħek, li ħafna drabi tibda tajjeb iżda mbagħad il-ħażniet tax-xaħam eżawriti tiegħek jindikaw lill-moħħ biex ifittex l-ikel. Huwa għalhekk li d-dieti finalment ifallu.

""Iktar minn 90% tan-nies għandhom it-tendenza li jispiċċaw lura bil-piż li kellhom qabel ma bdew il-vjaġġ tad-dieta tagħhom,"" jgħid il-Prof Sir Stephen O'Rahilly, id-direttur tal-Unità tal-Mard Metaboliku tal-Kunsill tar-Riċerka Medika.

Huwa jara dawn il-mediċini bħala l-“bidu ta’ era eċċitanti” fejn id-drogi jistgħu jgħinu lin-nies li ilhom “tħabtu għal żmien twil” b’piż li qed jagħmel ħsara lil saħħithom.

Il-prova ta’ Jan ikkonkluda, u ma setgħetx aktar tieħu semaglutide. Mingħajr id-droga moħħha ma kienx għadu qed jiġi mqarraq biex taħseb li kienet mimlija.

""Kont pjuttost imdejjaq għax il-piż kien qed jerġa' għaddej,"" qaltli - u kienet ""wiegħed id-dinja"" lil kull min seta' jagħtiha d-droga.

Hija ppruvat injezzjonijiet oħra ta 'telf ta' piż, iżda fl-aħħar għażlet li jkollha kirurġija maġġuri u kmiem gastriku biex tnaqqas id-daqs ta 'l-istonku tagħha, sabiex hi tkun tħossok mimlija aktar malajr.

Jan m’għandu “ebda dispjaċir” u għadu jiddeskrivi d-droga bħala “l-aqwa ħaġa li qatt ġratli”.

Il-piż jiġi lura
Madankollu, l-esperjenza tagħha hija 'l bogħod milli tkun unika u ż-żieda fil-piż wara li toħroġ is-semaglutide hija mgħaġġla. L-aħjar dejta fit-tul li għandna turi li n-nies jerġgħu jiksbu żewġ terzi tal-piż mitluf tagħhom fi żmien sentejn minn meta jieqfu.

Graff
“Hija droga li jidher li jeħtieġ li tinżamm meħuda sabiex jiġi żgurat li l-piż ma jerġax lura u dik hija, għalija, problema kbira,” tgħid Dr Margaret McCartney, GP u ċampjin tal-evidenza fil-mediċina.

L-NHS qed joffri semaglutide għal sentejn biss, li huwa kemm żmien in-nies jistgħu jaċċessaw kliniki ta 'telf ta' piż. Minħabba ż-żieda fil-piż wara li toħroġ mid-droga, huwa ġust li tistaqsi - x'inhu l-punt?

""Huwa verament pjuttost orribbli għal ħafna nies li qed jixtiequ jitilfu l-piż, u ġeneralment tħabtu għal snin sħaħ. Jekk ikollok xi ħaġa li tispiċċa taħdem għalik, u mbagħad biex l-NHS tmur u tirtira dan għal darb'oħra, jidhirli. tkun daqsxejn inġust,” jgħid Dr McCartney.

Hemm, ovvjament, ċirkostanzi fejn it-telf temporanju tal-piż jista 'jkun ta' benefiċċju. Xi kirurġiji u trattamenti huma offruti biss lil nies taħt limitu stabbilit, pereżempju.

Hija mediċina ġdida u s-sigurtà fit-tul mhix magħrufa. Effetti sekondarji jinkludu rimettar, għeja u frixa infjammata.

Rebħa medika jew falliment tas-soċjetà?
Personalment, ma nistax nifhem jekk għandniex niċċelebraw li l-mediċina pproduċiet din id-droga, jew jekk fil-fatt hijiex l-oppost - li tant naqsu milli nindirizzaw l-obeżità fis-soċjetà kollha li issa għandna bżonn id-droga.

“Ħafna minna qed niġġieldu ma’ dan,” jgħid Naveed Sattar, professur tal-mediċina metabolika fl-Università ta’ Glasgow.

Huwa jinżel fuq in-naħa tal-pragmatiżmu. Nofs il-pjaneta hija pproġettata li jkollha piż żejjed jew obeżità sal-2035, u l-piż żejjed huwa marbut mad-dijabete tat-tip 2, mard tal-qalb u xi kanċers. Kaloriji rħas ""daħlu fil-bijoloġija tal-bniedem li jiġu tħajjar bl-ikel u jieklu żejjed"", jgħid.

U ħafna pazjenti tal-NHS ""għandhom erba' jew ħames kundizzjonijiet bħala riżultat tal-piż żejjed tagħhom, u bħalissa aħna nagħtu s-servizz tax-xoffa"", jgħid.

Sadanittant il-politiki tal-gvern dwar l-obeżità fir-Renju Unit – 14 minnhom fl-aħħar tliet deċennji – ma dawwrux il-mixja u dan inħass fil-biċċa l-kbira mill-ifqar nies fil-pajjiż. Hemm rabta ċara bejn il-privazzjoni u l-obeżità.

Dr McCartney jargumenta li rridu nindirizzaw kif id-dinja li ngħixu fiha tkattar l-obeżità aktar milli ""nistennew"" li n-nies iżidu l-piż ""u mbagħad naċċettaw intervent mediku biex jikkuraha"".

linja
Isma 'Inside Health fuq BBC Ħsejjes: Din hija era ġdida fl-indirizzar tal-obeżità?
linja
Semaglutide qed ibiddel il-pajsaġġ tal-obeżità - u alternattivi qegħdin fi triqithom.

Prof O'Rahilly jgħid li anke jekk insolvu l-kawżi tas-soċjetà tal-obeżità ""se jkun hemm nies obeżi u jimirdu"", għalhekk jaħseb li d-drogi se jmexxuna għal dinja ta 'trattament tal-obeżità ""b'mod xieraq bħala kundizzjoni medika"".

Iżda dawn il-mediċini jibqgħu kontroversjali - u ddiskutejna biss l-użu tagħhom għat-titjib tas-saħħa.

Qed jitqajjem aktar tħassib dwar l-impatt fuq in-nies, ħafna drabi nisa żgħażagħ, li huma ppressati biex iħarsu b'ċertu mod meta ""sabiħa"" ħafna drabi hija mqabbla ma' ""rqiqa"".

Ir-rwol tal-kultura ta’ ċelebritajiet, id-disponibbiltà tas-semaglutide privatament permezz ta’ konsultazzjonijiet onlajn biss, u l-impatt fuq id-disturbi fl-ikel qed iqajmu wkoll mistoqsijiet.

Taħseb x'taħseb dwar semaglutide, id-dibattitu dwar din il-mediċina, u l-hype, huwa ċar li mhux sejjer.
