SUMMER HOLIDAYS AREN’T ALL FUN AND GAMES FOR CHILDREN’S FITNESS

As summer break kicks off in the U.S., researchers are asking parents to pay closer attention to their children’s screen time, as new research shows that too many are indulging in excess time online. While the summer holiday break is often considered a time of fun and relaxation for school children, a respite from routine comes an increase in sedentary behavior and screen time, and in turn, poorer health and academic outcomes. University of South Australia researchers have conducted the first ever review of studies

NEW STUDY HIGHLIGHTS RISKS OF MUSCLE-BUILDING SUPPLEMENT USE AMONG ADOLESCENTS AND YOUNG ADULTS

A recent study from the University of Toronto has revealed critical insights into the use of muscle-building supplements (such as whey protein and creatine) among adolescents and young adults in Canada. The research, published today, provides a comprehensive analysis of the prevalence, influences, and associated risks of muscle-building supplement use, highlighting important implications for health care, public health, and policy-making professionals. The work is published in the journal Performance Enhancement & Health. Analyzing data of 912 participants from the Canadian Study of Adolescent Health Behaviors, a national study focused on

STUDY FINDS METHODS TO QUIT SMOKING EFFECTIVE REGARDLESS OF MENTAL HEALTH HISTORY

A survey studied how mental health relates to methods people use to quit smoking, also known as smoking cessation aids. While the number of adults who smoke cigarettes has declined globally, people with mental health conditions are more likely to smoke and to do so more heavily. Because of these differences in tobacco use, the researchers theorized that the effectiveness of smoking

THERE IS NO ‘LESSER EVIL’ WHEN IT COMES TO TOBACCO USE, SAYS DOCTOR

From the traditional cigarette to the modern electronic cigarette, from the communal hookah to the discreet pinch of smokeless tobacco, each has proven to be detrimental to a person’s health. Dr. Jon Ebbert, medical director of the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center, discusses why there is no “lesser evil” when it comes to tobacco use. Smoked tobacco has the strongest association with cancer, and it goes beyond cigarettes. “Hookah, which is a smoked and inhaled tobacco, has a similar cancer risk because it’s the process of smoking and inhaling those

SCIENTISTS EXAMINE HOW STRESS KNOCKS OUT COGNITIVE RESERVE

While mentally stimulating activities and life experiences can improve cognition in memory clinic patients, stress undermines this beneficial relationship. This is according to a study, titled “Cognitive reserve, cortisol, and Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers: A memory clinic study”, from the Karolinska Institutet published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia. Researchers in the late 1980s found that some individuals who showed no apparent symptoms of dementia during their lifetime had brain changes consistent with an advanced stage of Alzheimer’s disease. It has since been postulated that so-called cognitive reserve might account for

EATING MORE FRUIT MAY REDUCE YOUR RISK OF DEPRESSION

Globally, depression is a major public health concern. According to the World Health Organization, it is the largest contributor to non-fatal burden of disease, with more than 80% of this burden represented across low- and middle-income countries. A growing body of evidence suggests that dietary behaviors—in particular higher consumption of fruit and vegetables—may be important in reducing the risk of depression. New research led by Postdoctoral Fellow Annabel Matison from UNSW Sydney’s Center for Healthy Brain Aging (CHeBA) published in the Journal of Affective Disorders has for the first time

WHY THE KETO DIET SHOWS PROMISE

Eline Dekeyster: “I want to implement scientifically proven ketogenic interventions safely in healthcare.” Can the development of these mental health conditions be influenced by the ketogenic diet? Increasingly, research suggests it might. “For those it helps, it can be life-changing,” says neuroscientist Eline Dekeyster. The turnout of more than 700 attendees, both live and online, at Eline Dekeyster’s lecture on nutrition and the brain signals how popular the topic is. Not surprising, according to the neuropsychologist. “Many people struggle with mental

RESEARCHERS DETERMINE HOW MANY WOMEN TAKE PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS DURING PREGNANCY

A new study investigating the safety of medication during pregnancy has found that about 60% of women are prescribed a medication during pregnancy. The study, published in Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety, was led by Professor Gareth Baynam, from UWA Medical School and head of the Western Australian Register of Development Anomalies (WARDA). “Pregnant women have traditionally been excluded from research examining the safety of medications, which has resulted in a lack of adequate data,” Professor Baynam said. In the study, 30% of women used a medication that was classified by

A company recall has been issued for cucumbers sold in 14 states because of possible contamination with salmonella. In a notice posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Florida-based Fresh Start Produce recalled the vegetables, which were shipped from May 17 through May 21. The cucumbers were sent to retail distribution centers, wholesalers and food service distributors in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia, the company said. Mini cucumbers and English cucumbers are not included

PHYSICIANS DISCUSS THE RISKS AND BENEFITS OF ADVERTISING

As social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram have risen in popularity, so have direct-to-consumer advertisements for drugs like Ozempic, whether it be pop-up advertisements or social media influencers promoting products to their followers. Now, more and more people are asking their doctors to prescribe them drugs they have seen in advertisements, prompting three chief medical residents—Lynne Rosenberg, MD, Samantha Thielen, MD, and Evan Zehr, MD—in the University of Colorado Internal Medicine Residency Program to deliberate: Is this a beneficial or harmful occurrence? The answer, they discovered, is complex and

POPULATION SHIFTS, RISK FACTORS MAY TRIPLE US CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE COSTS BY 2050

Driven by an older, more diverse population, along with a significant increase in risk factors including high blood pressure and obesity, total costs related to cardiovascular disease (CVD) conditions are likely to triple by 2050, according to projections from the American Heart Association. At least 6 in 10 U.S. adults (61%), more than 184 million people, are expected to have some type of CVD within the next 30 years, reflecting a disease prevalence that will have a $1.8 trillion price tag in direct and indirect costs. The new data comes

INTERNET ADDICTION AFFECTS BEHAVIOR AND DEVELOPMENT OF ADOLESCENTS, STUDY FINDS

Internet addiction influences multiple neural networks, which can affect the behavior and development of adolescents. Adolescents with an internet addiction undergo changes in the brain that could lead to additional addictive behavior and tendencies, finds a new study by UCL researchers. The findings, published in PLOS Mental Health, reviewed 12 articles involving 237 young people aged 10–19 with a formal diagnosis of internet addiction between 2013 and 2023. Internet addiction has been defined as a person’s inability to resist the urge to use

MEDICAL SCHOOL ISN’T TEACHING DOCTORS MUCH ABOUT NUTRITION, ACCORDING TO RESEARCHERS

Nutrition is a key determinant of health. But American physicians aren’t receiving effective training to counsel patients on the topic, according to a new paper from University of Georgia researchers. Current medical training focuses on weight and body mass index (BMI), exacerbating anti-obesity bias and increasing the risk of eating disorders, the authors said. And it doesn’t give future doctors adequate education on how to encourage healthier eating habits. “Mainstream medicine is still very focused on linking weight to health,” said Kearney Gunsalus,

NEW POLICY RECOMMENDS AI TECH SHOULD AUGMENT PHYSICIAN DECISION-MAKING, NOT REPLACE IT

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical health care has the potential to transform health care delivery but it should not replace physician decision-making, says the American College of Physicians (ACP) in a new policy paper, titled “Artificial Intelligence in the Provision of Health Care,” published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The paper offers recommendations on the ethical, scientific, and clinical components of AI use, and says that AI tools and systems should enhance human intelligence, not supplant it. “AI has the potential to aid in solving some

RESEARCHERS SAY BRAIN TUMORS ARE FATAL WHEN THERE IS A DOUBLE GENE MUTATION

Fanconi anemia (FA) is a rare hereditary cancer predisposition disease characterized by bone marrow failure as well as endocrine and physical abnormalities. A key clinical feature in those affected is a high risk of cancer. The reason for this is that certain genes involved in the repair of DNA damage do not function properly in the disease. This includes the BRCA2 gene. The greatest risk of cancer is observed in affected patients when there are harmful changes in both copies of

HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT BALANCE BETWEEN TELEMEDICINE AND IN-PERSON CARE

A patient sits in the living room of her apartment in the Brooklyn borough of New York during a telemedicine video conference with a physician on Jan. 14, 2019. Patients can now see an array of doctors without leaving their recliner thanks to telemedicine. But that doesn’t mean trips to the office should end. Finding the right balance between virtual and in-person visits can be a key to getting good care.

COMBINING BIOMEDICAL DATA FROM BREAST CANCER PATIENTS COULD LEAD TO ‘GROUNDBREAKING DISCOVERIES’

Studying combined data from the UK Biobank, a unique record of patient information from more than half a million Britons, could help make “groundbreaking discoveries” in the understanding and treatment of breast cancer, say researchers. Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death of women globally—accounting for 685,000 deaths in 2020—but some forms of the disease are more deadly than others. Understanding the unique characteristics of different variants of the disease could help doctors to diagnose and classify patients and develop new, more personalized therapies. The UK Biobank

WHEN MOTHERS AND CHILDREN TALK ABOUT PROBLEMS, RESEARCH SAYS ENVIRONMENT MATTERS

Talking to their parents about daily stressors can help adolescents deal with their problems. This is particularly important during the transition to middle school, when youth often are faced with new peer and academic challenges. But does it matter where these conversations take place? That’s the topic of a new study from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The findings are published in The Journal of Early Adolescence. “We were interested in the environmental settings for mother-youth conversations. Where do they typically happen, and what are the preferred locations? We wanted

LAWSUIT CLAIMS POPPI SODA NOT AS GUT-HEALTHY AS COMPANY SAYS

The popular prebiotic sodas known as Poppi may not be quite as good for your gut as the company claims. In a class-action lawsuit filed last week in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, Kristin Cobbs said she bought Poppi drinks because of their labels, which say they are prebiotic sodas and feature the slogan, “Be Gut Happy. 2024.06.05 03:11 Adventurous-Nobody Partial removal of commercially significant data from publication

Good morning!
I have a question for you folks - I am currently preparing a manuscript for submission to a journal. I am planning to send a paper on testing methods for (let's say - proteins), but in the "Materials and Methods" section the exact amino acid sequence of some proteins cannot be disclosed (as they are the property of our commercial partners).
However, they allowed us to test their activity by this method, and furthermore, the full amino acid sequence is not relevant because the article is not focused on specific antibodies, but on the proof-of-concept of the testing method itself.
Is such omission of information acceptable? i.e., the tested samples in the list include commercially available lots and our ones labeled as “Sample #3, 4, 5..." (without any advertise, promising of super-uber activity or naming of our partners)
I have previously seen examples of this kind, when scientists described in an article a bioprocess and factors influencing productivity, without naming the protein itself, suggesting that the patterns they found were approximately common to other processes: “Fluctuations in Dissolved Oxygen Concentration During a CHO Cell Culture Process Affects Monoclonal Antibody Productivity and the Sulfhydryl-Drug Conjugation Process"
This article contains the wording - Six lots, one pilot scale and five nonclinical Manufacturing (MFG), of an IgG2 mAb were produced in 250 L single-use bioreactors.
Is this acceptable language if you have permission to publish data about a new method of analyzing a product without naming the exact product itself?

From Fringe to Fact by the End of 2024

Post from eary jan;

My top 13 audacious predictions of tipping points that will reshape US public opinion and alter our world as we know it.

https://preview.redd.it/hh603g2zdn4d1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=6376cae1821d58d7f5fb2d91c98bb0976a1fc50b
As we enter 2024, many Americans are sensing seismic shifts looming on the horizon. From the corridors of power to the very fabric of society, transformative trends are reshaping our world at an extraordinary and head-spinning rate.
Here are thirteen potential tipping points, extrapolated from current events and more, that could redefine the U.S. landscape by the end of 2024.
I'm going out on a limb and pushing the limits with this one… this list is based on trends, conjecture, gut feelings, and a little bit of tea leaf reading with a dash of audacity.
Note: These are pure speculation and do not necessarily represent my personal endorsements of these developments.

TOP 13 AUDACIOUS PREDICTIONS BY THE END OF 2024

  1. Government Under Scrutiny: The U.S. pedophile ring, mirroring Hollywood's fall, engulfs nearly the entire U.S. government. Whether released or not, Epstein's Flight Log release caused a complete loss of the American public's confidence in U.S. leadership.
  2. Trump's Persistent Presidency: Donald Trump, defying odds, remains at the helm of U.S. leadership. Civil war erupts in a handful of locations around the nation. Most citizens are beginning to focus on local government, industries, and economies, engaging in more citizenry-led leadership.
  3. The Collapse of Global Institutions: NATO, WHO, IMF, WEF - are crumbling under new world pressures. Global signatories of the organizations above are abandoning the legal tendrils of these organized crime enterprises. A massive retraction of current global power ensues.
  4. U.S. Governments Redefined: Public awareness of the Organic Act of 1871 is leading to the dissolution of governments as corporate entities, as well as the financial meltdown that leads to a valueless currency and resignation of the majority of government reps and employees.
  5. Climate Change; the Driving Force into a Surveillance, Dystopian Society: Most Americans are realizing the concern over Climate Change is overblown and has replaced environmentalism as a whole. They know it has been the driving factor in expanding China's version of the social credit system on American soil. The U.K.'s version of the Blade Runners is erupting throughout the U.S., removing surveillance technology in public areas.
  6. Deep State Dynamics: An alleged CIA plot intended to install Newsom as U.S. President is faltering after Biden is taken out through illness or otherwise, followed by the resignation of Kamala Harris as U.S. President.
  7. The Dissolution/Reorganization of Israel as We Know It: A geopolitical earthquake. The world is turning its back on Israel and the United States. Israelis are abandoning Israel as the "national homeland," and massive exile ensues of Israelis from Israel. The economic hardship of these two nations continues as BRIC nations take hold of the global economy and the U.S. and Israel face massive transportation/communication/energy/hacking interruptions by countries around the globe. Hamas is losing its stranglehold on Palestine.
  8. Citizen Deputies: U.S. citizens, especially along the border, are taking law enforcement into their own hands and becoming deputized as bounty hunters. The U.S. military cannot hire recruits fast enough; illegals are not enlisting to the degree hoped by officials.
  9. Geoengineering Acknowledgment: The public is fully realizing geoengineering's realities and demanding accountability and changes in U.S. laws. Citizens are engaging in massive direct action at the local level.
  10. High-Profile Prosecutions: Gates, Fauci, and Netanyahu - are facing legal battles for their respective crimes against humanity. Sizeable portions of the U.S. population remain unable to fathom the criminality at hand. Prosecutions are continuing nonetheless.
  11. Vaccine Vigilance: After a continued increase in COVID-19 shot deaths, turbo-cancers, and other injuries, the public has reached a tipping point in their understanding of the dangers of vaccines. COVID shots are becoming officially labelled as bioweapons in the U.S., and more massive class action lawsuits are ensuing.
  12. The Electric Vehicle (E.V.s) Push Rejected: The replacement of gas-powered vehicles by E.V.s is being rejected by most Americans, shipping companies, insurance companies, and car dealerships due to concerns around safety, privacy, environmental, and humanitarian reasons (slavery).
  13. 5G and COVID-19 Convergence: The deployment of 5G is seen as an extension of the so-called 'Covid Kill-Grid' while cell phone service grows more faulty. An "unplug" movement is officially beginning in the U.S.
What are your predictions? & Have a good folks, frequencies matter.

FAQ

If you're new here, make sure to read through the above. Secondly, any simple questions should be confined to this weekly announcement post. If you've found a bug or a new strategy, or wondering what type of playthrough to try, you should make a separate post about those.
There are two types of flairs: user flairs (which are currently customizable) and post flairs. If you make a post, make sure you're flairing it appropriately for others. There are some exclusive flairs you cannot pick but should be on the lookout for, such as:
Changelog - these posts have very informative posts regarding changes.
Fixed - these posts generally have a solution to a bug or problem.
Lastly, if you flair a post [Help Wanted] and someone answered satisfactorily, make sure to re-flair it with [Solved] so others can find the solution instead of looking through tons of posts.
Antivirus products are known to detect the launcher as a threat and block its execution or delete the launcher. The reason for this is uncertain, but most likely due to a launcher component, PyInstaller, that is commonly flagged as a threat by antivirus software. A sufficient workaround is to add the launcher binary to your antivirus' whitelist, or to select the action to trust this binary when detected. More information can be found from the launcher's FAQ on Github.
If you are paranoid, you can always inspect the source code yourself and build the launcher from the source code. However, you are still likely to get false positives.
If you think the UI isn't set up correctly, make sure to press } to access the UI Settings panel. You will be given a choice of several different styles, with "Labels" being the recommended setting for new players and "Classic" for veteran players.
Great! The modteam is always looking for feedback, please make a post about your purposed change or idea and let the community decide through voting and debate. If it's something that is a bit more sensitive, please send it through modmail.

2024.06.05 00:07 drnewcomb Warning to early adopters of the TM-AC1900 CellSpot router

This is a warning to customers, like me, who received a TM-AC1900 CellSpot router when they were first introduced in 2014. Like the first couple of months. I have one such router and have been running into a complete brick wall trying to return it. I've spent about 6 hours on the phone talking to four different reps and twice visited my local corporate store, talking with the manager and assistant manager for an hour and a half and can not get anyone to give me any shipping label or receipt for this thing.
The first problem is that these are carried on the books at around $400, for which the customer is liable if the unit is not returned. The second problem is that the serial numbers at least some of these early units do not conform to the format that T-Mobile's system expects their "coverage devices" to follow. Thus, the system can not produce a shipping label or receipt for them. It's a Catch-22.
After all the time dealing with this all I have gotten is the assurance that there is a "notation in my account" to the effect that if I am charged for not returning the router my account should be credited the same amount. T-Mobile really does not want this thing back. I don't need it. I just need it off my account but it seems there is no way to make it happen.
My suggestion is that if you have a TM-AC1900 from 2014 that is just gathering dust, you might want to start the process of returning it. You may have no problems or you may run into a brick wall, like I did.

2024.06.04 23:50 Legitimate_Tiger1169 Exploring the Quantum Connection

TL;DR: The Unified Theory of Everything (UToE) suggests that consciousness, potentially interacting through quantum processes, influences the evolution of life at its most fundamental levels, including microorganisms like fungi, bacteria, and extremophiles such as tardigrades. Mycelial networks, resembling neural networks in their complexity and adaptability, provide a key area for studying how consciousness may shape biological structures and behaviors. These networks, alongside the sophisticated communication systems of bacteria and the resilience of tardigrades, highlight possible consciousness-driven evolutionary strategies. To test this, researchers could examine mycelial responses to environmental stimuli, explore quantum coherence within these networks, and observe interactions with other species, potentially revealing how consciousness influences life’s interconnected fabric.
In the exploration of (UToE), where consciousness is posited as a fundamental influencer of evolutionary processes, our attention naturally gravitates towards the smallest and most resilient components of life on Earth. Among these, microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and extremophiles like tardigrades (water bears) stand out for their pivotal roles in the ecological and evolutionary tapestry. Their behaviors and adaptations provide a unique lens through which we can investigate how consciousness, possibly through quantum processes, shapes life's complexity from the microscopic level upward.
Consider the intricate mycelial networks formed by fungi, which exhibit complex, adaptive patterns reminiscent of neural networks. These networks not only suggest an underlying intelligence but also mirror broader, possibly quantum-level interactions where consciousness might play a fundamental role. This perspective aligns with the UToE’s assertion that consciousness influences or correlates with quantum phenomena, which could be driving the organized, coherent behaviors observed in these networks.
Expanding our focus to include bacteria and viruses, we see their sophisticated communication systems and roles in genetic transfer as potential mechanisms through which consciousness directs evolutionary pathways. At the quantum level, consciousness could facilitate the emergence of new traits and adaptations, guiding life through its myriad challenges and opportunities for survival. This suggests a consciousness-driven guidance system operating at the smallest scales of life, orchestrating genetic variations and evolutionary changes essential for the survival and flourishing of species.
Tardigrades, or water bears, serve as a compelling example of extremophiles that might exhibit quantum biological behaviors influenced by consciousness. Known for their extraordinary resilience, tardigrades can survive extreme conditions that would be fatal to most other life forms. The complex interplay of genetic and biochemical responses that enables them to withstand desiccation, extreme temperatures, and even the vacuum of space might reflect a deeper, consciousness-driven evolutionary strategy. This strategy, possibly influenced by quantum processes, is designed to ensure survival under the most challenging conditions, showcasing the potential reach and impact of consciousness within the evolutionary narrative.
The concept of ecological intelligence, as evidenced by the decision-making capabilities of mycelial networks, points towards these organisms maintaining a record of environmental interactions and adaptations. This capability indicates a rudimentary form of consciousness that influences their long-term evolutionary strategies, suggesting that such networks act not just biologically but also through a consciousness-influenced framework.
The repeated patterns of complex, adaptive behavior observed from microorganisms to larger ecological and cosmic systems hint at a common underlying principle—a universal form of consciousness interacting through quantum mechanisms. This continuity in the expression and impact of consciousness across different scales of life offers a profound implication of the UToE. It suggests that consciousness is not a mere by-product of advanced neural systems but a fundamental aspect of the universe that guides and shapes the evolution of life at every level.
Testing the theory that consciousness influences mycelial networks, as proposed under (UToE), presents an exciting frontier in both biological and theoretical research. Here are several experimental approaches that could help explore this fascinating hypothesis:
  1. Behavioral Response Studies: One direct way to test the influence of consciousness on mycelial networks is through controlled experiments that assess behavioral responses to environmental changes. Researchers could expose mycelium to various controlled stimuli—such as changes in light, temperature, or chemical gradients—and observe how the network adapts or reorganizes. The hypothesis would be that, if influenced by consciousness, mycelial responses should exhibit non-random, purposeful adaptations that optimize survival and growth in ways that might not be entirely explained by known biological mechanisms.
  2. Quantum Coherence and Decoherence Experiments: Since the hypothesis involves quantum processes potentially influenced by consciousness, experiments could be designed to detect quantum coherence or decoherence in mycelial networks. Techniques similar to those used in quantum biology, such as magnetic resonance or photon emission studies, could be adapted to investigate whether quantum states within mycelial cells exhibit behaviors influenced by external conscious states or intentions.
  3. Neurological Analogy Studies: Drawing parallels between mycelial networks and neural networks, researchers could use imaging techniques to map the growth and adaptation patterns of mycelium and compare them to neuronal activity patterns under similar environmental stimuli. The goal would be to determine if mycelial networks process information and adapt in ways that are significantly analogous to how brain tissue reacts to stimuli, suggesting a possible underlying conscious influence.
  4. Inter-Species Interaction Observations: Another intriguing experiment would involve observing the interactions between mycelial networks and other living organisms, such as plants, insects, or bacteria. If consciousness influences these interactions, there might be detectable patterns of mutual benefit or symbiosis that go beyond what would be expected from mere chemical or physiological interactions.
  5. Influence of Human Consciousness: Experiments could be designed to observe whether directed human consciousness or intention can influence the behavior or growth patterns of mycelial networks. This could involve having individuals focus on the mycelium with specific intentions (e.g., to grow in a particular direction or speed up growth) and measuring any corresponding changes in the mycelium.
  6. Information Transfer Tests: Since mycelial networks are known for their efficiency in nutrient and information transfer, experiments could test whether these networks can transfer information in unexpected ways that imply a consciousness-like process. For instance, introducing specific information or stimuli at one point in the network and observing how this affects growth or behavior in distant parts of the network could provide insights.
By conducting these experiments, researchers would not only test the hypothesis of consciousness influencing mycelial behavior but also potentially uncover new dimensions of how life organizes and sustains itself at the most fundamental levels. Each experiment would help bridge the gap between theoretical physics and biological science, paving the way for a deeper understanding of the universe’s interconnected nature.

2024.06.04 23:25 EmoXan There's Something Under My Bed Because Of My Best Friend

We all remember those chain mail messages that floated around mid 200s right? The "Send this two six friends or this girl will rip your face off" type crap. Well those still do exist, you'll find them usually on Instagram on those stupid accounts with the freaky spiders or some crap. Early 2020, my friend sent me one of those chain mail messages, but it wasn't the run of the mill message. This message ruined my whole upbringing.
For context, I was 16 when this happened, fresh into high school. My friend who we'll call Mikey, was my best friend all through my life from backyard to elementary school and on. During high school Mikey had a bit of a personality change, yours would too if your dad was a belligerent alcholohic and your mom beat you. Mikey would be labeled a "Columbine sympathizer" if you catch my drift, this was because of his change from bright and positive clothing to all black, eye liner, typical emo phase stuff. He also seemed to hate everybody as he'd talk crap about everyone behind their back, but I always tried sticking up for him.
Mikey then started acting weird after one day, even with his fashion change and temperament change he still talked to me like normal every day and sat with me every day. He still did that, but he was glued to his phone. In just a week Mikey had his phone taken away at least six times for using it and every time I looked at his phone he was on some weird chain mail message site. It seemed to have different chain mail messages you could send, but all of them looked like I was reading the Book of the Dead with the pictures it had. He'd been messaging them to our friends or at least I thought he had since I heard them mention it. Then one day something happened to them.
I didn't see most of our friends one week besides Janet, and she was an absolute mess. She came into school with hair visibly ripped out of her skull, deep scratches all over her hands and most likely her arms, and her eyes were majorly bloodshot. I tried asking her what happened but she just avoided me saying, "I don't want to talk about it." Then the next following days she disappeared. That night it happened, I knew I should've just gone to sleep instead of picking up my fucking phone.
It was about 12:30 in the morning and I was having trouble getting to sleep, I'd been binging Ryan Gosling movies all night which was what was probably keeping me up. I decided just to throw on some music and laid down to close my eyes and try to go to sleep. Then just as I was about to drift to sleep, my phone went off. Going against my brain screaming to go the hell to sleep I grabbed my phone and saw a Messenger text from Mikey. "Nora, take a look at this." Followed by the text "Send this to five friends" that made me scoff. I humored Mikey and tapped on the message to see the full text, and that's when it clicked that I shouldn't turned my phone off an hour ago.
The text was followed by an image, an image of a bed with pitch black appendages bit long claws were wrapped around the bed. But what terrified me was the foot of the bed as peeking out from the board was a face with a teeth filled smile that was instead bright white with sharp fangs and bright red eyes. I shook off the feeling and deleted the message from the conversation, "Go to bed Mikey, we've got school early tomorrow. I'll see you there." I told him before turning off my phone. The following days were pretty normal, Mikey acted normal, strangely normal. But then he disappeared, and something else appeared.
I was laying in bed that night, reading my comic books and listening to music to help me fall asleep. I finished the book and slid it away in my nightstand before getting under my covers as my eyes slowly started to close. My eyes were closed for a good 15 minutes when I felt like I was being watched, causing my eyes to open. Nothing was there, when suddenly I started seeing two large arms creep up out from under my bed. I quickly moved my legs up against my chest as the arms then clasped the bed and held down on it tight as I heard a clicking sound that pierced my ears. But my eyes were the ones to feel like needles stabbing into them, as I saw the head of the thing slither out from under my bed.
Its head slowly writhed upwards as a disgusting and horrifying smile inched itself up for me to see the extended canines that had to be at least five inches, with the rest of the teeth being sharp enough to bite through someone's skull. But the eyes, they were like looking into a black hole with a red sun in the middle of it, it was almost hypnotizing. But what was hypnotizing but also beyond fear inducing, was it's voice.
"It's time Nora." It spoke. It's voice was soft but had a bass accompanying it, it hit all of my sensory receptors and both enticed me but also disturbed me. "It's time to come in Nora." It said as it's claws rhythmically tapped my bed as if it was patiently waiting for me. I could see it's bright red tongue swiping across the inside of it's teeth like a prisoner's cup against the bars of the cell. "Join your friends Nora, be with them." The creature giggled with a heart stopping noise resembling a box of tacks being shaken. All I would do is just stare at it, as I felt that if I moved my eyes away the thing would scarf me me down like a pound of beef. When the clock hit 6:00PM the monster would just say, "We'll meet again Nora, and you will join your friends."
This "routine" went on until I was 18. To avoid sleep deprivation, I'd sleep during the day where my parents thankfully let me sleep for six hours. Once I graduated high school I hugged my mom and dad goodbye and moved out where I found a place two states away. Thankfully I didn't have to make anymore changes to my lifestyle, besides sleeping with my bedroom lights on. But every night, I still hear that creature's voice in my head, I still swear I see him gripping onto my bed with that disgusting and unholy face staring at me. I still hear him tell me, "It's time Nora. It's time to join your friends. It's time to come in Nora."

2024.06.04 20:39 Klutzy-Setting5023 Time zone & Daylight savings

Hello,
I am pretty new to Excel and was wondering if it would be possible to do this, and if so, how I would go about doing it.
I have a spreadsheet with a table labelled "UTC" on the left. I have open times (09:00 AM) and close (5:00:00 PM). I am trying to use these UTC times and convert them to Vancouver, Canada time.
I currently have the time difference from Vancouver time to UTC in cells and the current time in Vancouver in other cells. I want it to update the timezone when it changes and still show the UTC open adn close times in Vancouver time.

In my never ending quest for more print speed, I was looking through the manual of my Elegoo Neptune 3 Pro and I found a wiring diagram of the main board. On it is a 5th stepper header labeled "E1". I want to know if this is open for modifications or it's used by the second Z axis motor, in which case why isn't it labeled "Z1". If it is open, can I add another y axis stepper to help with acceleration?

2024.06.04 18:40 XJohnny5sAliveX What Are Frontotemporal Disorders? Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/frontotemporal-disorders/what-are-frontotemporal-disorders-causes-symptoms-and-treatment
"Brian's story"
Frontotemporal disorders (FTD), sometimes called frontotemporal dementia, are the result of damage to neurons in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. Many possible symptoms can result, including unusual behaviors, emotional problems, trouble communicating, difficulty with work, or difficulty with walking. FTD is rare and tends to occur at a younger age than other forms of dementia. Roughly 60% of people with FTD are 45 to 64 years old.
FTD is progressive, meaning symptoms get worse over time. In the early stages, people may have just one symptom. As the disease progresses, other symptoms appear as more parts of the brain are affected. It is difficult to predict how long someone with FTD will live. Some people live more than 10 years after diagnosis, while others live less than two years after they are diagnosed.
There is currently no cure for FTD, and no treatments slow or stop the progression of the disease, but there are ways to help manage the symptoms.

What do the terms mean?

One of the challenges shared by people living with these disorders, families, clinicians, and researchers is what terminology to use. Here, we have used the term frontotemporal disorders to characterize this group of diseases and the abbreviation FTD, which is commonly used to refer to them. Other terms used include frontotemporal lobar degeneration and frontotemporal dementia, but it's important to note that with some frontotemporal disorders, the primary symptoms are problems with speech or movement, rather than dementia symptoms. Physicians and psychologists diagnose the different forms of FTD based on a person’s symptoms as well as the results of brain scans and genetic tests.

What are the types and symptoms of FTD?

In the early stages, it can be hard to know which type of FTD a person has because symptoms and the order in which they appear can vary from one person to another. Also, the same symptoms can appear across different disorders and vary from one stage of the disease to the next as different parts of the brain are affected.
Symptoms of FTD are often misunderstood. Family members and friends may think that a person is misbehaving, leading to anger and conflict. It is important to understand that people with these disorders cannot control their behaviors and other symptoms and lack any awareness of their illness.
There are three types of frontotemporal disorders (FTD): behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), primary progressive aphasia (PPA), and movement disorders.

Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia

The most common FTD, bvFTD, involves changes in personality, behavior, and judgment. People with this disorder may have problems with cognition, but their memory may stay relatively intact. Symptoms can include:
Over time, language and/or movement problems may occur, and the person living with bvFTD will need more care and supervision.

Primary progressive aphasia

PPA involves changes in the ability to communicate — to use language to speak, read, write, and understand what others are saying. This includes difficulty using or understanding words (aphasia) and difficulty speaking properly (e.g., slurred speech). People with PPA may have one or both of these symptoms. They may become mute or unable to speak.
Many people with PPA develop symptoms of dementia. Problems with memory, reasoning, and judgment are not apparent at first but can develop over time. In addition, some people with PPA may experience significant behavioral changes, similar to those seen in bvFTD, as the disease progresses.
There are three types of PPA, categorized by the kind of language problems that appear first.
Researchers do not fully understand the biological basis of the different types of PPA. But they hope one day to link specific language problems with the changes in the brain that cause them.

Movement disorders

Two rare neurological movement disorders associated with FTD, corticobasal syndrome and progressive supranuclear palsy, occur when the parts of the brain that control movement are affected. The disorders may affect thinking and language abilities, too.
Other movement-related types of FTD include frontotemporal dementia with parkinsonism and frontotemporal dementia with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (FTD-ALS).

What causes FTD?

Scientists are beginning to understand the biological and genetic basis for the changes observed in brain cells that lead to FTD.
Scientists describe FTD using the patterns of change in the brain seen in an autopsy after death. These changes include loss of neurons and abnormal amounts, or forms of proteins called tau and TDP-43. These proteins occur naturally in the body and help cells function properly. When the proteins don’t work properly, for reasons not yet fully understood, neurons in specific brain regions are damaged.
In most cases, the cause of a FTD is unknown. Individuals with a family history of FTD are more likely to develop such a disorder. About 10 to 30% of bvFTD is due to specific genetic causes.
FTD that runs in a family is often related to variants (permanent changes) in certain genes. Genes are basic units of heredity that tell cells how to make the proteins the body needs to function. Even small changes in a gene may produce an abnormal protein, which can lead to changes in the brain and, eventually, disease.
Scientists have discovered several different genes that, when mutated, can lead to FTD:
In recent years researchers have discovered several other genetic changes in genes that lead to rare familial types of frontotemporal disorders. These other variants account for less than 5% of all cases of FTD.
Families affected by inherited and familial forms of FTD can help scientists advance research by participating in clinical studies and trials. For more information, talk with a health care professional or visit the Alzheimers.gov Clinical Trials Finder.

How is FTD diagnosed?

FTD can be hard to diagnose because the symptoms are similar to those of other conditions. For example, bvFTD is sometimes misdiagnosed as a mood disorder, such as depression. To make matters more confusing, a person can have both FTD and another type of dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease. Also, because these disorders are rare, physicians may be unfamiliar with the signs and symptoms.
To help diagnose frontotemporal dementia, a doctor may:
A psychiatric evaluation can help determine if depression or another mental health condition is causing or contributing to the condition. Only genetic tests in familial cases or a brain autopsy after a person dies can confirm a diagnosis of FTD.
Researchers are studying ways to diagnose FTD earlier and more accurately and to distinguish them from other types of dementia. One area of research involves biomarkers, such as proteins or other substances in the blood or cerebrospinal fluid which can be used to measure disease progression or the effects of treatment. Researchers are also exploring ways to improve brain imaging and neuropsychological testing.

Treatment and management of FTD

So far, there is no cure for FTD and no way to slow down or prevent these diseases. However, there are ways to manage symptoms. A team of specialists — doctors, nurses, and speech, physical, and occupational therapists — familiar with these disorders can help guide treatment

Managing behavior changes in FTD

Behavior changes associated with bvFTD can upset and frustrate family members and other caregivers. Understanding changes in personality and behavior and knowing how to respond can reduce frustration and help provide the best care for a person with FTD.
Managing behavioral symptoms can involve several approaches. Here are some strategies to consider:
To ensure the safety of a person and his or her family, caregivers may have to take on new responsibilities or arrange care that was not needed before.
Medications are available to treat certain behavioral symptoms. Antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are commonly prescribed to treat social disinhibition and impulsive behavior. People with aggression or delusions sometimes take low doses of antipsychotic medications. If a particular medication is not working, a doctor may try another. Always consult a doctor before changing, adding, or stopping a drug or supplement.

Treating language problems in FTD

Treatment of PPA has two goals — maintaining language skills and using new tools and other ways to communicate. Treatment tailored to a person’s specific language problem and stage of PPA generally works best. Since language ability declines over time, different strategies may be needed as the illness progresses. The following strategies may help:
Use a communication notebook (an album of photos labeled with names of people and objects), gestures, and drawings to communicate without talking.
Store lists of words or phrases in a computer or phone to point to.
Speak slowly and clearly, use simple sentences, wait for responses, and ask for clarification if needed.
Work with a speech-language pathologist familiar with PPA to determine the best tools and strategies to use. Note that many speech-language pathologists are trained to treat aphasia caused by stroke, which requires different strategies from those used with PPA.
"Mary Ann's story"

Managing movement problems in FTD

Medications and physical and occupational therapy may provide modest relief for the movement symptoms of FTD. A doctor who specializes in these disorders can guide treatment.
For people with corticobasal syndrome, Parkinson’s disease medicines may offer some temporary improvement. Physical and occupational therapy may help the person move more easily. Speech therapy can help them manage language symptoms.
For people with progressive supranuclear palsy, sometimes Parkinson’s disease drugs provide temporary relief for slowness, stiffness, and balance problems. Exercises can keep the joints limber, and weighted walking aids — such as a walker with sandbags over the lower front rung — can help maintain balance. Speech, vision, and swallowing difficulties usually do not respond to any drug treatment. Antidepressants have shown modest success. For people with abnormal eye movements, bifocals or special glasses called prisms are sometimes prescribed.
People with FTD-ALS typically decline quickly over two to three years. During this time, physical therapy can help treat muscle symptoms, and a walker or wheelchair may be useful. Speech therapy may help a person speak more clearly at first. Later on, other ways of communicating, such as a speech synthesizer, can be used. The ALS symptoms of the disorder ultimately make it impossible to stand, walk, eat, and breathe on one’s own.
Physicians, nurses, social workers, and physical, occupational, and speech therapists who are familiar with these conditions can ensure that people with movement disorders get appropriate medical treatment and that their caregivers can help them live as well as possible.

The future of FTD treatment

Researchers are continuing to explore the biological changes in the body, including genetic variants and proteins, that lead to FTD and identify and test possible new drugs and other treatments. They are also developing better ways to track disease progression, so that treatments, when they become available, can be directed to the right people. Clinical trials and studies are underway to advance these efforts. People with FTD and healthy people may be able to participate. To find out more, talk to your health care provider or visit the Alzheimers.gov Clinical Trials Finder.

2024.06.04 18:34 Meatrition In the DailyMail: (article extracted) Why eating one chip is like smoking a cigarette: DR CATHERINE SHANAHAN reveals the vegetable oils hidden in everyday foods that could be linked to serious disease

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-13489439/vegetable-oils-hidden-foods-ill-DR-CATHERINE-SHANAHAN-eating-chip-smoking-cigarette.html
Next time you go to the supermarket, read the ingredients lists. In just about every aisle, from dairy to frozen foods and snacks, you will see vegetable oils making repeated appearances on many product labels, including salad dressings, canned fish, ready-to-eat foods, diet drinks and infant formulas.
These oils, usually made from seeds, include sunflower, corn, rapeseed, soy, cottonseed and safflower oils.
Vegetable oil is a global industry. It generated more than £91 billion in 2020, and that figure is forecast to increase to £127 billion by 2027.
Roughly a third of the calories in your diet likely comes from this substance, which has effects on our metabolism that medical science knows little about. The reason why human health is increasingly in crisis is right there on the label, hidden in plain sight.
I'm a doctor with biochemistry training who specialises in family medicine, and I am convinced that these oils will make you sick (if they haven't already).
The amount of cancer-causing toxins found in a serving of French fries is equivalent to those consumed when smoking up to 25 cigarettes. (A 5oz serving has about 25 fries, so eating one chip gives the same exposure as smoking one cigarette)
The link between vegetable oil and poor health is firmly grounded and backed up with hard scientific research. Removing it from our diets can resolve fast-proliferating modern health plagues, such as cancers, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
Vegetable oil is an industrial product that didn't exist until a little more than 150 years ago. In the millennia before industrial agriculture changed our landscape, many human populations relied on animal fats such as butter, beef fat and pork fat.
Humanity has been eating animal fats since the Stone Age, and dairy fat for nearly 10,000 years. We've also eaten oils extracted from fatty fruits such as olives and coconuts for many thousands of years.
But vegetable oils are radically different. Making them requires technologically advanced equipment rather than a simple stone press, butter churn or butcher's knife.
Yet despite the complexity of processing these products, they are now the largest single source of dietary fats, accounting for more calories in our diets than sugar or flour.
Heating oils creates toxins
A basic problem with these oils is that they are very high in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). These compounds are very prone to reacting with oxygen — a process called oxidation.
This oil oxidation creates new compounds called, collectively, lipid oxidation products (LOPs).
LOPs don't exist in the plants these products came from — and many are mildly to extremely toxic. By consuming these oils we're exposing our bodies to hundreds, even thousands, of different types of toxic LOPs.
Some of these were almost unknown until recently, when they were identified thanks to new technologies.
These toxic LOPs are formed when the oil is extracted during its manufacture.
Still more toxic LOPs can form in oil during storage, as the oil oxidises (breaks down) over time.
Toxicologists who perform real-world tests on vegetable oils in people's homes and restaurants find that even before cooking, the oils contain significantly higher concentrations of toxins than when they were first bottled.
Even more toxins form when the oil is heated to make food, whether in our homes, in restaurants, or in processed-food factories.
And yet more toxins will form if the food gets heated again, as in when leftovers are warmed up. There are volumes of academic textbooks that describe all the toxins you expose yourself to from eating foods made with vegetable oils.
Yet few people ever read these books or learn about the damning information they contain.
Not all are toxic if heated
Martin Grootveld, a professor of bioanalytical chemistry and chemical pathology at De Montfort University in Leicester, has been trying to warn consumers about toxins in vegetable oils for decades.
He studies oxidation reactions using the best tool for analysing an array of molecules all at once: a one and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscope. This machine can determine the make-up of a molecule by examining how its atoms spin when inside a magnetic field.
The toxins he has identified in vegetable oils include acrolein. This inflames lungs when inhaled, which we may do when frying with these oils. He has also found many members of a toxin category called epoxy fatty acids. These are implicated in breast cancer, organ failure and fertility problems.
Professor Grootveld's analyses consistently show that heated vegetable oils are loaded with toxic LOPs.
By contrast, his experiments with heated coconut oil and butter find that they contain hardly any toxins at all.
However, such is the medical ignorance of these dangers that when I asked Professor Grootveld if he'd ever been invited to present his data at a medical conference, he told me he had not.
What's in those fries?
Aldehydes are perhaps the most dangerous category of the many families of toxins in vegetable oils. This family of chemicals includes the cadaver preservative formaldehyde and many of the toxins that make cigarette smoke carcinogenic and irritating to human tissue.
Toxic aldehydes that form in frying oil can end up in the food.
In 2019, Professor Grootveld led research, published in the prestigious journal Nature, which found that a 5oz serving of French fries cooked in vegetable oil (from a well-known franchise) contained 25 times more carcinogenic aldehydes than the World Health Organisation's tolerable upper limit for exposure.
Professor Grootveld told me that the amount of cancer-causing aldehydes he found in the serving of French fries is equivalent to those consumed when smoking up to 25 cigarettes. (A 5oz serving has about 25 fries, so eating one chip gives the same exposure as smoking one cigarette.)
Deep-frying leads to more toxins
The level of damage done to polyunsaturated oils by oxidation follows the same basic principles as burns on your skin: it depends on time and temperature.
Experts warn that the longer the oil is cooked and the higher the cooking temperature, the more toxins will form.
Eric Decker, a professor of food science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the U.S., is one of the most highly cited scientists in agriculture.
He focuses on preventing oxidation in our food supply, and told me that when it comes to toxin production, 'the biggest risk factor is deep-frying the oil'.
Deep-frying stresses oils for a long time at high temperatures. Fast-food chains often have rules that tell employees to reduce toxicity by changing the frying oil once a week. Smaller eateries and chains may not.
Roughly a third of the calories in your diet likely comes from vegetable oil, which has effects on our metabolism that medical science knows little about
...But pan-frying is a close second
A report in the American Journal of Epidemiology in 2000 identified an alarmingly high rate of lung cancer in non-smoking women who use vegetable oils during pan-frying, deep-frying and stir-frying, both in food service settings and their own homes.
Many people know deep-frying is not healthy and avoid deep-fried foods. That's why Professor Grootveld is more concerned about shallow-frying food in pans using vegetable oils.
He has published several papers in various prestigious journals, including a 2019 paper in Scientific Reports warning that you can generate the same 'extremely high levels of hazardous aldehydes' while making popular pan-fried dishes at home.
So it's not just about deep-fried food, and it's not just about restaurants. This could be happening in your kitchen.
Body fat becomes like veg oil
Dr Stephan Guyenet is an independent neuroscientist who has investigated what our increasing consumption of vegetable oils is doing to our body fat.
In the journal Advances in Nutrition in 2015 he published a review of 50 years of studies on the composition of Westerners' body fat.
This showed that the proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids in it had gradually increased from 9.1 per cent of all fatty acids to 21.5 per cent. This was in line with increasing public consumption of vegetable oils. The lesson was clear: the more vegetable oil people ate, the more their body fat started to look like vegetable oil.
Our reformulated body fat causes a fundamental shift in our body chemistry. This subjects our cells and tissues to a chemical imbalance called oxidative stress.
Oxidative stress unleashes carcinogenic toxins in cells that can damage proteins and DNA.
Is there a link to Alzheimer's?
In 1906, German pathologist Alois Alzheimer examined slices of brain tissue from a woman who died of early-onset dementia. He found unusual clumps of protein, which he called amyloid plaques.
But the origin of the plaques eluded scientific explanation until U.S. and Japanese researchers reported that these plaques are caused by oxidative stress, in 2001 in the Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology. Their research showed that oxidative stress damages proteins, generating tiny blobs of cellular debris.
Our brain cells have garbage-disposal systems that can clean up most types of debris. But not all — and not amyloid. The amyloid that the clean-up crew can't handle will accumulate within the cell, and eventually it starts forming amyloid plaques.
The accumulating plaque slows down cellular activity, which slows down the brain's processing speed — and that's when symptoms usually begin.
Many degenerative disorders follow a similar progression.
Another common disease-inducing protein blob is oxidised alpha-synuclein, which causes Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia (the second most common dementia, after Alzheimer's).
A study found that a 5oz serving of French fries cooked in vegetable oil contained 25 times more toxins than the World Health Organisation's tolerable upper limit for exposure
How to de-pufa your body
While I have no doubt that we can get our PUFA levels back down to normal, it takes a while. One study, from 1960, showed that the half-life of PUFA in our body fat ranged from 350 to 750 days, which means it takes that long to clear out just half of it.
More recent studies, such as a report in the journal Cell Metabolism in 2011, pinpoint a similar figure: 580 days on average. So we're looking at three or four years of avoiding vegetable oils to normalise the amount of PUFAs in your body fat.
However, from my experience with patients, the good news is that usually people feel better within a couple of weeks of cutting out vegetable oils, particularly if they suffer from chronic pain or stomach problems, because their bodies' inflammation levels will have dropped significantly.
So how do you know what to look for? Check the ingredients list of every product that has a nutrition label. Every. Single. One. Because you simply can't predict what will have vegetable oil in.
You might think that dried fruits, for example, wouldn't, but they do. Or peanut butter. Or nuts, rotisserie chicken, mayonnaise and dressings that say 'made with olive oil', granola, canned tuna, olives, sun-dried tomatoes and other vegetable preserves, even random things such as vitamins and spice blends.
Most people who shun vegetable oils tend to use butter, olive oil and peanut oil. For home cooking with healthy oils, you need to choose the oil that matches the cuisine.
I use olive oil for homemade pasta sauces and anything Italian, Mediterranean — or even Mexican (the traditional fat would be lard, which I can't easily get). I also use it for roasting vegetables and making dressings, marinades and mayonnaise. If you like to make Thai and Indian dishes, you might want to add coconut oil.
How to avoid these oils if eating out
Restaurants take advantage of the fact that vegetable oils cost less than traditional fats and oils such as olive oil and butter.
Many use vegetable oil in all deep-fried, pan-fried and batter-fried foods (including crispy noodles, onion rings, fried shrimp, chicken dishes and Japanese tempura). Restaurants love to serve deep-fried food because the process is so simple that you can hire staff without any culinary skills whatsoever.
Avoiding deep-fried food is the number one rule for eating in restaurants and grabbing food out. Anything battered or breaded and fried is typically deep-fried — and in fast-food restaurants and many other establishments, it's often fried twice — once at the factory and a second time before it's served.
More than half of the calories in some deep-fried foods are in the form of the most oxidised and disease-inducing, heat-deformed vegetable oils.
Dishes that are baked or steamed instead are clearly preferable to anything that's fried.
Restaurants also use vegetable oils in sauces traditionally made with butter or olive oil, including hollandaise sauce and aioli.
Most salad dressings contain vegetable oil in place of olive oil or cream. (Any restaurant dish that contains mayonnaise will likely contain vegetable oil, since it is rarely made with olive oil.)
Vegetable oils are also baked into doughnuts, Danish pastries, muffins and numerous other desserts and confections.
My 'hateful eight' oils to avoid
My 'delightful dozen' good fats
What about refined versions of peanut oil, for example? These oils are not nourishing, but they're not as bad as my Hateful Eight, so fall into a middle category of 'OK but not great'.
You don't need to avoid them, but if a more nutritious alternative is available I'd recommend that instead.
Some people worry about 'smoke point' — this is a term used by the oil industry to sell lower-quality, refined oils, which always have higher smoke points than their extra-virgin (i.e. unrefined) counterparts.
These lower-quality oils also have fewer antioxidants, which means they oxidise at lower temperatures than higher-quality oils, so your food will contain more toxins.
Smoke point simply refers to the temperature at which a fat starts to smoke. It doesn't tell you what you really need to know, which is whether the oil is oxidising or not (only toxicology testing can tell you that).
At the smoke point, you might see a wisp of light blue smoke, and heating the fat past that point will fill the air with bitter smoke and ruin the food.
An oil with a high smoke point allows for higher heat and faster cooking, which makes things go quicker in a busy restaurant. But when your high smoke-point oil is also refined and high in polyunsaturates, you're exchanging speed for toxicity.
The suggestion is that using an oil with a higher smoke point preserves the food's flavour. But a high smoke-point oil doesn't do that.
What does? Using normal cooking techniques such as stirring and turning down the heat. Most foods should not be cooked at super-high temperatures anyway, because heat also destroys the nutrition in the food: the higher you heat something, the less nutritious it becomes.

I asked myself the same question I do everyday since I arrived on Surveillance Platform 12: what did I do to deserve this?
I knew exactly what I had done, of course, I proved more competent than my superiors, and they didn’t take it well. As the result, they promoted me, congratulated me, gave me a few medals and then sent me to command an outdated station from a dying program for an entire year!
The original idea was sound: a string of stations that would detect potential federation fleets and alert the consortium in advance. But with the development of drone technology, they were now obsolete, and many of them had already been disassembled.
The few that remained were used as punishment, like for me and most of the crew, or to “store away” peculiar individuals, that were still useful but were better kept far away from the “real” military.
We certainly had some … interesting people. Like Arna, the Jaslip that never talks to anyone, and with a record I didn’t have the credential to access, and I’m pretty sure was here against his will.
Or Xen, the Trombil head of cybersecurity, whose genius was only matched by his obsession with overcoming the limitations of his flesh, to the point that it scared even other Trombils. I heard he installed himself with an experimental implant to be able to code with just his mind.
To be fair, I didn’t know how crazy they were before getting sent to this station. Probably a fair bit, but the months of isolation couldn’t be good to anyone. Not to mention the boredom. I needed something to happen soon, or I might go insane too.
And by something, I didn’t mean yet another brawl. Apparently, if you put one hundred people in a tin can, lightyears away from the nearest inhabited planet, conflicts are bound to happen.
I was currently in my office, trying to do something of my day by looking at the life support, but it was clear that wouldn’t succeed.
Stars above, give me something to do!
For the first time in my life, the stars above listened. A glaring alarm told us that an unknown ship had been detected. Everyone, me included, rushed to the command bay, as the station was finally serving its purpose for the first time since its construction.
I peeked through the glass bays, trying to spot the vessel with my own eyes, in vain. I turned my attention to the holographic display in the middle of the room. It was projecting an image of the ship, that had been identified as a heavily modified Venlil light cruiser.
The most obvious change compared to the standard model was the paint: the standard gray had been replaced with a vibrant blue, and an unidentifiable emblem was painted near the rear. It was hard to tell, though, because the image was still very blurry. To be fair, the ship was about 10000 Km away from us.
“Hum, sir?” It was the communication officer. “They’re hailing us.”
Of course! They didn’t know who we were, and that we were hostile to them! I was about to accept the communication, when I remembered something.
“Wait. Xen, if we accept, they’ll be able to attack our systems, right?”
The Trombil had already connected a cable from his arm to the console.
“Yes, but the opposite is true. And considering the difference between our level and the federation’s, it won’t even be close. In fact, if we accept this communication, I’ll probably be able to vent their atmosphere and shut down all their systems.”
The perspective of winning a battle without firing a single shot was alluring, but there had to be a downside.
“Will they be able to slip a virus into our system without you noticing? I mean, we are connected to the wider internet. A malware slipping past us would be devastating.”
“For them to manage that, they’d need an army not of regular programmers, but of guys like me! Don’t worry, they won’t do a thing without me noticing.”
“Okay then, accept the communication. The others, man the guns in case Xen’s plan fails.”
After a few seconds of intense concentration, Xen opened his eyes wide, looking panicked.
“Is there something wrong?”
“Well, the ship’s dead, and they haven’t tried anything funny, but… It’ll be easier to show you.”
The projection at the center of the room was replaced by a 3D model of the ship, probably coming from its own self-diagnosis system.
“It seems the federation has had a significant paradigm shift with their technology. First, they switched from plasma to kinetics, which was seemingly an upgrade. But that’s inconsequential. No, the real problem is that this ship had no crew.”
“How did it operate, then?”
“Teleguidance. Through this!”
The image of the ship was decomposed in a thousand pieces which became transparent, except for one. The engineers in the crowd gasped, and I did too as soon as I read the label: “Quantum relay”.
“They have FTL coms”, I whispered. “Which means they know we’re here!”
“Correct. Not only that, but even if they didn’t attack, they fried the ship’s data bank and the quantum relay as soon I tried to access them, which means I can’t counterattack through their internet.”
My mind was racing. I needed to alert the government immediately! We were at war with the federation, and they had changed a lot. I took one last look at the emblem of this new federation. While the signification of the connected dots in a circular pattern was beyond me, the plants surrounding it left no doubt that it was represented herbivore supremacists.
Under it was written an indecipherable inscription, in an unknown script: UNSS Discovery.

Well, good thing there wasn’t anyone on the ship this time. That guy, Xen, is a pretty good hacker. Nah, we’re underselling him. He’s the genius of a century.
It took us, an entire species of basically machine hybrids, TWO whole seconds to get past his defenses without him noticing. Thankfully, the rest of the consortium is well bellow him in terms of cybersecurity.
As far as finding a new hostile power goes, we’ve hit the jackpot. They have FTL coms too, meaning we can just do our things remotely in their internet, and they’re powerless to stop us! Okay, we still need to lay low to avoid detection, but this is great!
Why didn’t we use cyberwarfare more often? Ho, yeah, that. But we won’t make that mistake again.
This is pretty cool, though. We see you, random Krev citizen doing her groceries! And you, Resket police officers doing ... brain scans? Now that we think of it, that’s a lot of security cameras.
Hum. Well, time to dig up every Krev state secret out there. Hoo, that’s… Well, at least they don’t eat people.
Come to think of it, the most important thing we can get out of those guys is their tech. I mean, you see these things they build around planets. That’ll come in handy in disassembling Mercury.
Let’s see… Their civilian tech is pretty much open bar. We’ll take a big order of biotech, along with electronics and a side of nanomaterials.
The JI-6 processor has left the development stage, and will enter production in a few weeks? Wrong! It enters it tomorrow! We mean, is it really corporate espionage if we’re not a corporation?
The military-industrial complex is where the best stuff is, though. And as expected, it’s barely more secure. Well, it could probably be safe from a regular collective of hackers, but for us, it’s still child’s play.
There is a disappointing lack of kinetics here too, but we’ll figure that out on our own with their chemical industry. But except that, Christmas came early! We thank all the Krev taxpayers for our fancy new toys!
It’s going to take us months to fully upgrade, but it’s going to be so worth it.

2024.06.04 18:05 Secret-Chip-8657 BF’s Changing Symptoms

Hi, I’m posting on behalf of my BF who was diagnosed with “Idiopathic SFN” via a skin biopsy last summer. (He also had low copper and high B6 levels).
Backstory: His symptoms started about 5 years ago when a girl he dated at the time gave him HSV1 (the cold sore virus), and immediately his body freaked out, with weird zaps, tingles, etc randomly pinching him all over. His regular doc put him on Valtrex, which seemed to control the symptoms for the most part. (This was all pre-SFN diagnosis). BF was sent to a neuro who diagnosed the SFN but doesn’t think the cold sore virus could be the cause and labeled it idiopathic (bf was tested for a multitude of autoimmune stuff, all negative except a positive 1:40 speckled ANA).
However, this past winter, he had a stressful period concerning his mom’s health, and since then the zaps intensified then turned into muscle twitches—he says they feel deep, and they’re all over and last a while. He’s alerted his neuro who wants to schedule another EMG who says “that’s not a typical symptom of SFN.”
My questions: 1. Has anyone had HSV1 trigger snf?
  1. Do these sound like typical ebb and flow of symptoms or worsening progression?
  2. How can I be supportive but also temper anxiety about potential causes? His big fears are that it’s being caused by the big bads: ALS or MS, and I can tell the worry is coloring his day-to-day. He’s a beautiful human, and it hurts to see him hurt.
Finally, my heart goes out to everyone here, as it seems like an intensely painful and baffling experience.

2024.06.04 16:44 Smooth-Put-9228 Can we talk about WHAT Autism is (and isn’t), Neural Pruning🌳, Why Some Autistics Stim 💫, and Masking🎭?

I’ve been reading a lot on forums and find a surprising number of people in the autistic community (or with autistic family members) do not understand what Autism is, and what it isn’t. As an AA mom of “ausome” kids, I try to explain my understanding as best as I can. Autism is NOT a disease, it’s not an “act”, it’s not contagious, and it’s not something that needs to be fixed or changed.
Autism is a Neurodevelopmental Disorder, which means it is a condition or difference people are born with (mostly genetic), where their neurological system develops and grows differently. This impacts their typical development (could be speech, could be intellect, could be ability to process emotions and behaviors, or other factors.)
Most (maybe not all) autistics “stim” (self-stimulate), but it varies. I think it’s important to understand the sensory systems, stimming as well as masking. I don’t feel there’s enough conversation about, or understanding of, masking and that causes a lot of misdiagnosis, and harm to autistics.
You have to start with an understanding of the neurological system, which we all develop as infants and children. This system impacts nearly every aspect of our being. Think of it as all the the wires that connect everything in our bodies. Everything from from how we process fullness, hunger, indigestion (which is why many autistics have GI and other issues), how our brain processes all the information, inputs and senses, how we interpret language and the world around us, etc.
Many autistics have sensory challenges. Some are hyposensitive, where they are craving more sensory inputs (which is often resolved by “stimming”). Some are hypersensitive, where they’re overly sensitive or recognize more than most, and they can become overwhelmed or overstimulated.
More on that in a bit… but it’s hugely important to understand the concept of “pruning”, to understand how (and how much) information and inputs are processed by autistics. Think of gardening… gardeners will prune their plants to maintain only the most essential, strongest, desired, and healthiest branches. By pruning (cutting off the “other” stems and branches), the plant can better concentrate its nutrients to grow the plant.
In humans, as babies, our brains naturally prune our synapses - which are like the “wires” our brain uses to process information, senses, thoughts, etc.
In autism, synaptic pruning is missed, skipped, or not as prominent as it is in NT (neurotypical) brains. I don’t know the right term or the reason. Visuals help me to understand, look at this image here.
Autistics have a lot more synaptic connections than neurotypical people. It kind of looks like an extremely complex root system. This difference often makes EVERYTHING different from an experiential, processing and functional perspective.
Many autistics are more sensitive to things like sounds (and other senses but I’ll stick to sounds for simplicity.) - Maybe they hear more things than most, because they’re neurons are more complex and they can pick up on tones, pitches, volumes, etc. others can… -Maybe they become “overstimulated” from certain sounds or loud sounds. (A gym to a NT is just a little noisy, with bouncing balls, echos and kids yelling and playing. To autistics, it may be EXTREMELY loud, they may notice distinct sounds others miss, and for some each individual sound, smell, temperature, etc. is amplified compared to NTs.
Try to imagine it. Maybe it feels like the world is so loud it PHYSICALLY hurts, and you hear all the voices and distinct sounds much louder and more clearly, in your ears and your mind. It can be EXTREMELY overwhelming and distressing.
This might be considered a “hypersensitivity”, where their neurons and synapses essentially receive MORE than they can comfortably process (or ignore). Maybe these people wear headphones to muffle or quiet the noise some. (It is not always the superpower it sounds like to some.) Imagine trying to fall asleep and you hear a car driving two streets over, a front door slam 6 houses down, the ice machine downstairs, the AC running, etc., it’s A LOT. It’s usually not a pleasant experience when you’re hypersensitive to something.
Conversely, some people are HYPOsensitive, where they crave certain sensory inputs. Their body needs (not just “wants” for enjoyment) but often require more sensory inputs in order to function and process all the neurological actions, thoughts, etc.
SOME stimming (aka self-stimulatory behavior) is the result of autistics who are hyposensitive seeking whatever that might be. It could be sound related - maybe they have audible tiks, or need to hum during certain activities - but it’s not always sound related.
There’s a frustrating and outdated belief that most autistics are boys, who don’t “mask” (more on that later), and they flap their hands nonstop. Everyone should remember this sentence: “if you’ve met one autistic, you’ve met one autistic.” No two people are alike, and so many are hung up on 50-year-old (false) beliefs that autistics are only boys, or that they don’t have empathy, can’t make eye contact, are not social, and are “obvious” in comparison to NTs. This is WRONG, and a dangerous assumption. Don’t assume all autistics are alike, and don’t assume all autistics have disabilities. Autistics are different than NTs, but many (if not most) do not have intellectual challenges, and many do not consider themselves disabled. In fact, many autistics will agree they struggle not because of their disabilities or differences, but because of the perceptions, assumptions and lack of flexibility and accommodations from others.
Most autistics need certain sensations, routines, environments or experiences to help them find comfort and balance amid all the other (many) things going on in their brains and bodies. Things NTs don’t have to worry about generally. They may stim, and they may have posturing differences. This could look like: - holding hands in quirky positions and postures (kind of imagine T-Rex arm positioning and maybe they’ll also have their wrist, hand and fingers in an “unusual” position.) Maybe they keep their arms kind of close to their body, and hold one or more hand with pointer, middle and thumb touching as though they’re holding something, even if they’re not. (My child does this.) To that person, that position is either comfortable, soothing, or simply something that brings joy (feels really good) to them. They may not even be aware they’re doing it. -Sometimes these tense and rigid postures are a sign of stress or discomfort. Other times, it’s just simply comfortable (like someone else may be comfortable standing with just their thumbs in their pocket, and hands loose.)
In my experience, most “stims” are things that are either done to: - SOOTHE/COMFORT - FEEL GOOD (it’s a pleasant feeling), or - EXPRESS AN EMOTION (often happiness)
Autistics might express joy, excitement, glee, etc. by “happy stimming” - this is also common. Stimming often releases dopamine, because the act is giving them a pleasure response. Stimming is unfortunately frowned upon by many in society, and punished or suppressed by many parents. Kids are taught “stimming is weird,” and are often forced to feel shame and hide their stims. This is terrible!
In fact, the act of hiding your stims and autistic differences is called “MASKING” or sometimes camouflaging.
🎭 MASKING is the act of hiding or suppressing your body’s natural needs, in an attempt to make yourself appear “normal” (or whatever is expected and preferred by most.) - Some people may think of it like, “well I don’t want to bit my nails because that’s a bad habit and it’s embarrassing.” So, I don’t. That’s the same, right? No! It’s not the same! - sadly, many children have been, and are still being raised (some diagnosed, some not) in environments which force them to suppress, stop, or hide those behaviors.
Many children and adults “mask” most of their needs, their natural way of speaking or engaging, and will work VERY hard to sit, act, sound, look, posture, walk, etc. like everyone else. Why? Because they want to (and deserve to) fit in, be accepted and not feel ashamed. This is not a healthy solution, short or long term.
In some regards, many argue selective masking MAY be appropriate at times. As an example, maybe if you’re in church and your stim is to make interesting (distracting noises), or maybe you like to spin in circles, or run laps… Society is divided on whether it’s ever ok to force someone to suppress their stims, and to encourage masking (the effort that goes into trying to act, look, sound and behave in a way that is not natural to the individual.
In my opinion, the answer on whether or not anyone should feel self-conscious of their stims always depends. It depends on the autistic person’s values (do they truly care what others think), the person’s age, the setting/environment, and the action. Generally, I believe it’s acceptable and encouraged to stim, we just need greater understanding and acceptance.
Usually, stims are harmless to others, and are NECESSARY actions for autistics (neurologically, physically, emotionally and mentally NECESSARY).
I might encourage someone who can’t relate or understand to use chickenpox as a metaphor. They itch REALLY REALLY BAD. It’s NOT “in your head”, your brain and your body NEED to scratch. However, society (and maybe your parents) say you can’t. You can’t usually step aside as needed into a private room to satisfy the itch when you’re not being watched, and there are NO medications, OTC creams, or ANYTHING ELSE that will suppress this need.
Still, you find yourself frustrated and conflicted because you “must not” do what your brain and your body is telling you it NEEDS. (Maybe that’s a silly example, but I’m running with it.)
Each day, you have the symptoms, the itch and the need to scratch while you go to work, go to school, sit on the bus or train, eat dinner, etc… whatever you do, don’t itch! Not only is that frustrating, but eventually it will become EMOTIONALLY and MENTALLY exhausting. Eventually you WILL “burst”.
In the chickenpox example, maybe you finally stop fighting yourself and address the need. Maybe you finally give in and scratch the heck out of your body until you’re bleeding, but you’re feeling a sense of relief and thinking “finally.” It doesn’t just stop or get better though. You’ve needed to scratch all day, maybe you’re hypersensitive and emotional at this point, feeling annoyed with everyone around you and even yourself.
Similarly, if you’re autistic, maybe you spent all day with a painful, headache inducing smile permanently plastered on your face because you THINK you need to “look” happy or content, and you’re trying not to draw attention to any undesirable behaviors. This occurs in males and females, but is particularly common in females.
Maybe an autistic person has been “dying” to swing on a swing (that motion can be so freeing and comfortable). Maybe they want to spin and spin and spin, and giggle incessantly, because it’s both regulating and calming, AND it feels good. People might think you “look weird”, but they do not understand, often your stimm are your joy and sources of happiness. Or maybe you need to stim as a way to express yourself.
Stims can be many things. Maybe you need to chew on things (oral sensory seeking), or maybe you need to hold your arms and hands in an “odd posture”, but instead you keep your arms down, tense, tight/flexed with fists at your sides in an effort to control yourself and NOT do that. Maybe you like to hang upside down, to jump and crash, or maybe you like to demonstrate a unique behavior most can’t relate to. - I say, do it! Stim! Do whatever your body needs. Don’t hide it, suppress it, or feel ashamed. I feel it’s not much different than a sneeze… if you have to sneeze, then sneeze darn it. Don’t hold it in!
Eventually, every “masker” has to release what they’ve been withholding. Masking can be SO INCREDIBLY TOXIC, stressful, mentally debilitating, and physically exhausting… in my opinion and experience. After “holding” or “hiding” it for however long you have, you eventually can’t help but have a meltdown or a shutdown.
I’ll clarify meltdowns because they’re poorly understood. A meltdown is not a tantrum, because tantrums are generally a conscious behavior with a manipulative factor - you do something because you want a particular outcome. Meltdowns are a sense of overwhelm and losing control of emotions, and happen when people struggle to (or simply cannot) struggling to control behaviors.)
We tend to think of meltdowns as a “fit” or exclusive to children. Sure, they’re common in children and they hand in hand with disregulation, in my experience. However, they can look like a number of things. Maybe instead of what people envision as a person on the floor flipping around crying and yelling, maybe instead it looks like anger and aggression. Maybe it looks like severe anxiety, or even a panic attack. Don’t get hung up on labels, terms or stereotypical examples, bc everyone is different.
Similarly, autistics can experience an “autistic shutdown”, which tends to be more cumulative. Eventually, their brain sort of just shuts down and maybe they want to be mute, cry, sleep, withdraw, hide, not eat, etc. It may look like a severe and sudden onset of debilitating depression, but it is not necessarily actually depression.
Meltdowns and shutdowns often happen because the person is so overwhelmed, and so painfully exhausted, (physically, mentally and behaviorally), they just are “maxed out.” They may literally shut down, or maybe they experience a period (hours, days, weeks) where they sort of function, but are barely hanging on. The mental health and emotional distress autistics experience, I feel is sadly overlooked. When someone notices there may be a problem, it’s often misdiagnosed as something else. (Side note: many autistics have “associated conditions”, where they’ll ALSO have ADHD, depression, OCD, anxiety, etc.)
Sometimes we all (humans) just get worn out, exhausted and are spent. I’d argue everyone experiences most of these challenges, and I’m not making light of them for anyone. Instead, I’m pointing out how some of this might look, and how it’s often missed, or misdiagnosed in autistics.
Thank you for letting me work through my experience, and my interpretation. I just wish there was more understanding and acceptance. Personally, I don’t subscribe to the primary need of “awareness” in the general sense. I think there needs to be A LOT more education (maybe especially within healthcare providers, teachers and those in early childcare), and I hope for my kids’ sake we all work towards greater acceptance. Less stigma, less shame, less pressure to mask, and more ACCEPTANCE for everyone.
If I misspoke, feel free to KINDLY correct me if I mistakenly stated something as a fact. And, feel free to add to this, please.
—What do you wish people understood about autism?
— How do you describe autism?
— How do you feel about stimming?
— What are some of your stims?
— How do you feel about masking?
Thanks for sharing, and thanks for keeping it positive. 😊
Edited to add, bummer, I can’t add images. Search Google images for “autism synaptic pruning”. I particularly like tree diagram comparing NT to AU by “The Neurodivergent Brain” here.
I also like this image (scroll down a bit) showing scans comparing the neural differences in an AU compared to a NT child here, image by bioninja.

2024.06.04 16:40 KeenKrozzy Building Mapping for Networking and IT support

So I have figured something like this exists already because it seems like an easy win for a functional application, but now that I am looking I am not sure. It would be extremely useful for IT support and Networking. I am tasked with creating a network diagram for a rather large location today, and so I spent a little time looking into. So far, I found an app I'm going to try that says you can create floor plans via walking around with your phone camera (I'm not going to say the name so that people don't think I'm shilling).
Functions I'm looking for;
  1. Walk around with headset or phone and scan a building floor. This builds a 3D model of the rooms and hallways.
  2. Mark where your Network equipment, APs, PCs, Printers, etc. are located.
  3. Draw lines through the ceiling and walls to represent network cables and have them labeled with details (e.g. what switch/port it is connected to).
  4. The ability to throw on a headset from anywhere, load up the building, and explore what you created.
Has nobody created this yet? If not, this is a gold vein just sitting there. I can't be the only one that thinks this, right??

2024.06.04 16:04 bold_cheesecake Symbiotic Parasite Chapter 2

Looking around Mike the not so mighty puddle notices that he is in a forested area, and that the hole he slipped out of was inside a mountain, close to the base of it. There is also a river flowing down from the mountain over the inside of the cave, explaining why it was so damp
'So, I have a few options in regards as to actually live, since I don't feel like dying. Again'
Making a list of to do within his mind he comes up with this
'Food -I have a feeling I will need a lot-, finding people because insanity is dumb, convincing them that I am a nice puddle since I doubt people will be trusting, which would require me learning how to communicate instead of just going around eating things, and understanding what I can actually do. Hey wait what about that system thingy?'
Upon thought a nice little screen appeared before the sentient splash
Welcome to the System, Realm-Shifted! Here you can see your current status, abilities, and set your sights on various forms of growth
New copy ability unlocked! Fungal Lighting (low power). 1/5 copy slots used
View status
View current abilities
View magic progression trees
'Great, magic exists, guess I should've expected that, status, I guess'
Puppeteer Ooze (sentient variety), Small fluid volume (estimated volume is LV1), full mana pool (estimated pool size is LV2) no Host, no injury, no magic effects, light hunger. One time sight! You are sapient! Would be kinda weird if you weren't considering your past life, but it is weird that you are, since the smartest puppeteer ooze out there is as smart as a house cat, while most operate more akin to a bacteria infection bound to a single organism since it is a single organism
'Uh huh, yeah I don't think people will trust something called "puppeteer ooze", though the idea of having a host feels... right? Damn instincts, I guess. Onward to abilities'
Species Abilities
Available Magic
God Given Powers
Copy Abilities (1/5 slots used)
'Well at least I don't have to click back in order to check other things. I know what copy abilities are, species abilities is going to be a lot, available magic I have no idea on, and god given powers are going to come at me far and few between, but are really important, so off to whatever the gods gave me to start'
Vernacularly Vested- Understand commonly spoken languages, be it spoken or written
Realm-Shifted- This isn't your first rodeo when it comes to life
Watched- Do a flip! Oh wait, you can't.
'Oh screw you too, though I'm glad I don't have to fumble around with learning a new language, that'd suuck, time to get into whatever puppeteer oozes can do.'
Fluid Plasticity- Built different. Your physiology can bend, change shape, and alter itself (more details available)
Parasite- Attach to a host to eat what they eat and depending on how much you connect yourself to them, control them as well! Note that people usually don't like having parasites exist, nevertheless latch onto them
Symbiote- Alter host's physiology to keep the two of you safe. In an emergency can burn fluid volume to feed or heal host
Organic Observation- See things in life as they truly are. When it comes to biology. Allows for observation of and insight into every part of biology, barring only the most complicated
Copy Cat- Access to copy abilities, heavily linked to both fluid plasticity and symbiote. Take a look something in detail and you can find it's notable genes, these genes can then be added. More fluid volume means more slots available, however be warned that your host isn't as pliable as you and takes more effort to apply a lot of changes to
Mitosis+- When willed a split mass of fluid volume will become it's own organism. Since you are sapient it wouldn't do for your kids to be mindless, now would it?
Flesh Wound- When a mass of fluid volume is cut or chopped off you can reattach yourself within a small time frame, with the largest mass keeping your consciousness when unwillingly cut. Note, you can't do this when it is it's own life.
'Alright then. That is all rather important. Though I'd like more info on fluid plasticity since it is literally the basis of my body, thank you very much'
Alterations available:
Base Fluid- Allows for eating and is where thought happens, if you exist you are familiar with it. Allows for digestion, vibration detection to hear, and fluid motion
Photosensitive Peepers- Behaves much like that of the base fluid, but allows for sight. Comparatively is easily cut, and can't digest things. Easy to shift or alter a piece of mass to and from
Macabre Mimic- Dense and hard, this behaves similarly to that of bone, though isn't as tough due to being harder and more brittle. Can be used to condense a larger size and reinforce, while being unable to hold one's mind, quickly shift or alter, digest things, or directly use the flesh wound ability. Bone, fats, and storage all in one!
Copy Cat Abilities- Some copies simply add a little something to a part, while others act much more different. Make sure to keep track in the Copy Abilities section
'Bone-like stuff? Sad it's so dense, though that problem is solved by the time it would even be helpful, since I doubt a puddle needs a spike. Anyways, guess it's time to try and understand what magic I apparently have'
One By One (Death)- Cause complete failure within a single cell (no effective mana cost, minuscule time to cast and recharge, only applicable to your host)
It's The Little Things (Life)- Alter a single cell to heal or become something new (no effective mana cost, minuscule time to cast and recharge, only applicable to your host)
On Your Nerves? (Lightning)- Read and input nerve signals (no effective mana cost, passive/automated)
Shadow Cloak (Dark)- Cover yourself and/or your host in shadows to blend in with the darkness, or obscure detail (Slow mana drain, mana drain proportional to surface area of use, half second to apply, no recharge required)
Prowl (Dark)- When hidden, find life forms following mental specifications within 5 meters, barring free floating bacteria or viruses (Medium mana cost, no mana drain, no cast time, 5 minute recharge)
'Okay, so the first three are pretty much just parasitism and symbiosis but are very precise, while the latter two are just flatout mean to use. Not even strong, just mean. Honestly, if this is how a tiny little puddle starts off like there's no wonder people wouldn't like, well, any ooze'
And with this, the liquid liquidator realizes that the sun has come up, and he has been neglecting how hungry his new body is
'Right, food, basically any animal should work since I'm so small, though I suppose I should see about getting an animal as a host'
And thus the little puddle who could went off to find a rabbit, or a particularly large bug to satiate their hunger, planning to find something bigger soon to act as a host.
'I really did just get super weird priorities all of a sudden, I was making ammo, like, a couple hours ago and most of that time was spent in a reading trance. Now here I am hunting in the woods for bugs to eat and panthers to make my host, since, ya know, I'm a puddle. Life is weird. Both of em'
