2024.05.23 15:11 Sapphire_Pop Quick Takes on all the characters

This is in no particular order btw and I’m only halfway through episode 4;
  1. Lauren is trying to hard to be the villain and she would actually be likeable if she didn’t play so hard on the ‘I’m BFFs with Daniel aspect
  2. Olivia is a voice of reason and rational. Love her style and she brings a semblance of normalcy to the cast. She’s also just a super nice person in general
  3. Rasa told no lies about Lauren - she could’ve waited till after the viewing but she ain’t say nothing wrong. She’s my star of the show and I’ll ride for her every single day 😭
  4. Daniel can go kick rocks. No need to expand. I actually liked him in the first episode too
  5. Reme, make your money sis and run far away from Daniel - I don’t trust the geezer and he will betray her the first chance he can
  6. Oli… sir… do better or should I say, ACT better. Avia played the jealous wife amazingly tho, props to her. Side note: she is a STUNNER 😍
  7. Rosi is the perfect balance of fun, being a serious business babe but also a pot stirrer 🤣 perfect reality tv combo imo
  8. Julianna… I don’t know if I like or dislike her yet LOL she’s fun and cute but at the same time, chaos revolves around her. Great to watch tho
Looking forward to the rest of the season but I also see a lot of potential for this as a series….

2024.05.23 14:45 Fairyliveshow Which Spanish Horror Films Should Be Remade in Hollywood?

I’ve been thinking about the unique charm of Spanish horror films and whether any of them should be remade in Hollywood. Spanish horror often combines atmospheric tension with deep storytelling, making them unforgettable. But could Hollywood remakes do them justice?
The Orphanage comes to mind—its blend of supernatural elements and emotional depth could resonate widely if remade carefully. And while [Rec] already got a Hollywood version with Quarantine, there are plenty of other gems to consider like some these ones: https://creepybonfire.com/horrortainment/tv-and-films/best-spanish-horror-movies-films-that-chill-and-thrill
Of course, there’s a risk of losing the essence that makes these films special, while Spanish horror dive deep into local folklore and cultural nuances that Hollywood might miss, turning profound psychological horror into just another jump scare fest...which would be a disaster!
But still, with the right director and cast, some Spanish horror films could truly shine in Hollywood. Imagine Guillermo del Toro revisiting The Devil’s Backbone or an American take on Julia’s Eyes.
What do you think? Are there any Spanish horror films you’d love to see Hollywood tackle?

2024.05.23 14:30 protonzadde FortiWLC & FortiGate streaming/casting scenario

Hi FortiPeople
One of our internal departments have requested the ability to be able to stream video and audio from smart devices such as Android phones/tablets and iPhones, to wireless speakers and smart TVs supporting Chromecast.
Setup looks like this at the moment; Fortigate 500E with FortiOS 7.0.15 FortiWLC-200D with software 8.5-2 FortiAP FAP-U-321's running matching software with controller Dedicated VLAN configured in the FortiGate, spread to all FortiSwitches through FortiLink This particular VLAN is set to IGMP Snooping ON and does NOT block intra-VLAN traffic. In FortiWLC the ESS Profile for this is configured as Dataplance Mode: Tunneled and Configured VLAN Only, matching the VLAN on the FortiGate. We have enabled Allow Multicast Flag and Multicast-to-Unicast Conversion.
So far so good. Clients are getting IP addresses from the VLANs DHCP and can communicate according to Firewall Policies.
The issue we're having is that the devices cannot use features like "casting" to an Android TV with built-in Chromecast.
I wanted to humbly ask this forum if anyone has an idea about what we could be missing in the setup to make this work?

Enjoy this exclusive interview with the 'real creator' of seaQuest DSV, Philip Segal, by Martin Lakin who created the seaQuest Vault website! Philip worked on season 1 and he spoke about behind-the-scenes rifts, pressures and fun anecdotes on the set of the series. Video: Martin Lakin on YouTube.
Philip David Segal is now retired but he was very involved with the creation of the television series seaQuest DSV which was his brainchild but most people thought it was Rockne S. O'Bannon who was the mastermind of the show. Although both Philip and Rockne worked closely together to create the series, it was often Rockne who was credited as the creator.
Some key points of this interview conducted by Martin Lakin which Philip discussed:
*how he met and began working with Steven Spielberg
*how his inexperience and arrogance made his job problematic and how he overcame the issues
*the television series seaQuest DSV was originally meant to be like 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea' but it ended up being more like 'Star Trek'
*why Rockne S. O'Bannon left after the pilot episode
*the rifts between himself and writer David Burke, the disagreements between Roy Scheider and Tommy Thompson that ended in a bizarre incident which shut down production
*NBC TV and studio executives who only cared about making money and saving money rather than the creative process of television production
*Giving credit to the amazing talents of James Lima and Michael Boyd on season one
*Critiques on cast members from season one: Roy Scheider, Jonathan Brandis, Ted Raimi, Don Franklin, Marco Sanchez, Stacy Haiduk and Stephanie Beacham.

2024.05.23 11:55 CP4-Throwaway My span for the transition between the Modern 1960's & Classic 1970's (Part I: Winter 1969 to Fall 1970)

This post is long overdue as I just kept procrastinating to do this for the longest, but finally, it's here.
The start is kind of tricky to figure out but the end is very easy. The start is most likely going to be with Richard Nixon's inauguration on January 20, 1969 and the end will be the Paris Peace Accords on January 27, 1973. I know early-mid 1969 does kind of seem like a stretch to include the transition (although some are even willing to start the 1970s in 1968, so maybe not a stretch after all), unlike late 1969-1972/early 1973ish, as that period still screamed "60s" in many ways with Woodstock, the Moon Landing, and such, but I think even that period had enough "70s" things to exclude it out of the "core '60s" territory, especially by the time you hit the summer of '69.
I know most will disagree with the timespan but this is just my opinion. This is gonna be much longer so this will probably be done in two or three parts, one again.
Let's begin.

The inauguration of Richard Nixon - January 20, 1969

After the chaotic year that was 1968, with the incumbent president Lyndon B. Johnson not running for a second time, Richard M. Nixon had narrowly defeated Hubert Humphrey, the incumbent vice president, in the presidential election. Nixon became the first non-incumbent vice president to be inaugurated as president, something that would not happen again until Joe Biden in 2021. I'd say this is appropriate to begin the transition into the tumultuous decade that was the 1970s.

Sly and the Family Stone's 'Stand' album releases - April 1969

In the spring of '69, soul/funk band Sly and the Family Stone released their fourth album Stand. Written and produced by lead singer and multi-instrumentalist Sly Stone, Stand! is considered an artistic high-point of the band's career. Released by Epic Records, just before the group's celebrated performance at the Woodstock festival, it became the band's most commercially successful album to date. This album was another sign of the 70s era that was beginning to emerge with its soul and funk rock sound.

Lew Alcindor becomes the #1 pick for the NBA Draft - April 7, 1969

The 1969 NBA draft was the 23rd annual draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The draft was held on April 7 and May 7, 1969, before the 1969–70 season. The first overall draft pick this year would be none other than Lew Alcindor (or later, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, as we all know him as) from UCLA for the Milwaukee Bucks organization. This would be the changing of the guard for the National Basketball Association as the veteran Boston Celtics dynasty were about to come to an end while a new dynasty has officially been born.

The Boston Celtics win the 1969 NBA Championship - May 5, 1969

After defeating the highly-favored Los Angeles Lakers team of Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, and Jerry West, the aging Bill Russell-led Boston Celtics team win the 1969 NBA World Championship Series to end off the 1968-1969 NBA season, acquiring win their 11th championship as an organization. This was a significant Finals series as this marked the end of the Bill Russell Celtics dynasty that began in 1956. This would be their final championship as a team as Russell would retire shortly after this playoff series.

Star Trek ends with the "Turnabout Intruder" episode - June 3, 1969

"Turnabout Intruder" is the twenty-fourth and final episode of the third season of the American science fiction television series Star Trek. Written by Arthur H. Singer (based on a story by Gene Roddenberry) and directed by Herb Wallerstein, it was first broadcast on June 3, 1969. In the episode, a woman switches bodies with Captain Kirk and then tries to take over command of the Enterprise. This was the last original episode of Star Trek to air on NBC.
"Turnabout Intruder" not only marked the final appearance of all main and supporting cast members of the show but also the last appearance of regular background actors David L. Ross (Lieutenant Galloway), William Blackburn (Lieutenant Hadley and DeForest Kelley's stand-in), and Roger Holloway (Lieutenant Lemli and James Doohan's stand-in). The episode drew Nielsen ratings of only 8.8, in contrast to rival shows Lancer on CBS and The Mod Squad on ABC, which gained ratings of 14.7 and 15.2 respectively, a drop of over fifty percent since the show premiered. Cultural theorist Cassandra Amesley states that this episode is "agreed to be one of the worst Star Trek episodes ever shown" by Star Trek fans.
The original Star Trek series ending would be another shedding off of 60s culture.

Brian Jones dies - July 3, 1969

Rolling Stones star Brian Jones passes away at the age of 27 in the summer of 1969 after reportedly drowning in his swimming pool. Long story short, a lot of theories would surface surrounding his death years later saying that he was killed. And more importantly, this would be the beginning of the "27 Club" deaths that would occur with 60s musical acts between 1969 and 1971.

The Apollo 11 spaceflight to the moon - July 20, 1969

Apollo 11 (July 16–24, 1969) was the American spaceflight that first landed humans on the Moon. Commander Neil Armstrong and Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC, and Armstrong became the first person to step onto the Moon's surface six hours and 39 minutes later, on July 21 at 02:56 UTC. Aldrin joined him 19 minutes later, and they spent about two and a quarter hours together exploring the site they had named Tranquility Base upon landing.
Humans walking on the Moon and returning safely to Earth accomplished Kennedy's goal set eight years earlier. In Mission Control during the Apollo 11 landing, Kennedy's speech flashed on the screen, followed by the words "TASK ACCOMPLISHED, July 1969". The success of Apollo 11 demonstrated the United States' technological superiority; and with the success of Apollo 11, America had won the Space Race.

The Manson Family murders - August 8 to 10, 1969

The Tate–LaBianca murders were a series of murders perpetrated by members of the Manson Family during August 9–10, 1969, in Los Angeles, California, United States, under the direction of Tex Watson and Charles Manson. The perpetrators killed five people on the night of August 8–9: pregnant actress Sharon Tate and her companions Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, and Wojciech Frykowski, along with Steven Parent. The following evening, the Family also murdered supermarket executive Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary, at their home in the Los Feliz section of Los Angeles.
On the night of August 8–9, four members of the Manson Family – Watson, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Linda Kasabian – drove from Spahn Ranch to 10050 Cielo Drive in Benedict Canyon, the home of Sharon Tate and her husband, film director Roman Polanski. The group murdered Tate (who was 8½ months pregnant), and guests Jay Sebring, a celebrity hairdresser; Abigail Folger, heiress to Folgers Coffee; her boyfriend Wojciech Frykowski, an aspiring screenwriter; and Steven Parent, an 18-year-old visiting the guest house caretaker. Roman Polanski was not home as he was working on a film in Europe. Manson was a cult leader and aspiring musician who had tried to get a contract with record producer Terry Melcher, who had previously rented the house.
The following night, those four people, in addition to Manson, Leslie Van Houten and Steve "Clem" Grogan, committed two more murders. Manson had allegedly said he would "show them how to do it". Linda Kasabian drove the group to 3301 Waverly Drive. Manson left with Atkins, Grogan, and Kasabian in the car and told the others to hitchhike back to the ranch. Watson, Krenwinkel, and Van Houten killed the couple in the early morning hours of August 10.
The Tate–LaBianca murders "profoundly shook America's perception of itself" and "effectively sounded the death knell of '60s counterculture". Additionally, the ritualistic nature of the murders laid a foundation for the rise of the Satanic panic.

The Woodstock festival - August 15 to 18, 1969

Woodstock Music and Art Fair, commonly referred to as Woodstock, was a music festival held from August 15 to 18, 1969, on Max Yasgur's dairy farm in Bethel, New York, 40 miles (65 km) southwest of the town of Woodstock. Billed as "an Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music" and alternatively referred to as the Woodstock Rock Festival, it attracted more than 460,000 attendees. Thirty-two acts performed outdoors despite overcast and sporadic rain. It was one of the largest music festivals in history and became synonymous with the counterculture of the 1960s.
The festival has become widely regarded as a pivotal moment in popular music history, as well as a defining event for the Silent and Baby Boomer generations. The event's significance was reinforced by a 1970 documentary film, an accompanying soundtrack album, and a song written by Joni Mitchell that became a major hit for both Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Matthews Southern Comfort.

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! premieres on CBS - September 13, 1969

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! is an American animated comedy television series created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears and produced by Hanna-Barbera for CBS. The series premiered as part of the network's Saturday morning cartoon schedule on September 13, 1969, and aired for two seasons until October 31, 1970. Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! is the first incarnation of a long-running media franchise primarily consisting of animated series, several films, and related merchandise. This show played a huge impact on Generation X "70s kid" culture (although the original 1969-1970 series has a 60s vibe to it as well).

The Brady Bunch premieres on ABC - September 26, 1969

The Brady Bunch was a new series that premiered on ABC for the 1969-70 fall season. It starts with the episode "The Honeymoon", which gives this description on Fandom:
"Michael Brady, an architect and widower with three sons (Greg, Peter and Bobby) marries Carol Ann Martin, a mother with three daughters (Marcia, Jan and Cindy). Mike and Carol have a chaotic backyard wedding, in which the boys' dog, Tiger, chases the girls' cat, Fluffy. Mike and Carol admonish their children, yelling at them to go catch their pets. The newlywed couple goes on a honeymoon later that day, while the children sit at home thinking that their parents hate them. While on their honeymoon, Mike and Carol realize that they were too hard on their children, and they decide to bring them along on the honeymoon. They also bring along Alice (the housekeeper), Tiger and Fluffy."
This show would give another huge sign to 70s culture as a whole.

Sesame Street debuts - November 10, 1969

In the fall of 1969, “Sesame Street,” a pioneering TV show that would teach generations of young children the alphabet and how to count, makes its broadcast debut. “Sesame Street,” with its memorable theme song (“Can you tell me how to get/How to get to Sesame Street”), went on to become the most widely viewed children’s program in the world. It has aired in more than 120 countries.
The show was the brainchild of Joan Ganz Cooney, a former documentary producer for public television. Cooney’s goal was to create programming for preschoolers that was both entertaining and educational. She also wanted to use TV as a way to help underprivileged 3- to 5- year-olds prepare for kindergarten. “Sesame Street” was set in a fictional New York neighborhood and included ethnically diverse characters and positive social messages.
Taking a cue from “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In,” a popular 1960s variety show, “Sesame Street” was built around short, often funny segments featuring puppets, animation and live actors. This format was hugely successful, although over the years some critics have blamed the show and its use of brief segments for shrinking children’s attention spans.
From the show’s inception, one of its most-loved aspects has been a family of puppets known as Muppets. Joan Ganz Cooney hired puppeteer Jim Henson (1936-1990) to create a cast of characters that became Sesame Street institutions, including Bert and Ernie, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch, Grover and Big Bird.

The 'David Bowie' album releases - November 14, 1969

Originally released in the UK, David Bowie's self-titled album would be his second studio album released, which would be titled under the genres of folk rock and psychedelic rock. Space rock was another genre that this album experimented with due to its only released single "Space Oddity", which came out in July 1969 to capitalize on the Apollo 11 Moon landing, received critical praise, and was used by the BBC as background music during its coverage of the event. That song is considered to be one of the most musically complex songs he had written up to that point, it represented a change from the music hall-influenced sound of his debut to a sound akin to psychedelic folk and inspired by the Bee Gees.
David Bowie has received mixed reviews in later decades, with many finding a lack of cohesiveness. Bowie himself later stated that it lacked musical direction. Debate continues as to whether it should stand as Bowie's first "proper" album.

The Altamont Free Concert takes place - December 6, 1969

The Altamont Speedway Free Festival was a counterculture rock concert in the United States, held on Saturday, December 6, 1969, at the Altamont Speedway outside of Tracy, California. Approximately 300,000 attended the concert, with some anticipating that it would be a "Woodstock West". The Woodstock festival had taken place in Bethel, New York, in mid-August, almost four months earlier.
The event is remembered for its use of Hells Angels as security and its significant violence, including the stabbing death of Meredith Hunter and three accidental deaths: two from a hit-and-run car accident, and one from a drowning incident in an irrigation canal. Scores were injured, numerous cars were stolen (and subsequently abandoned), and there was extensive property damage.
The concert featured performances (in order of appearance) by Santana, Jefferson Airplane, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY), with the Rolling Stones taking the stage as the final act. The Grateful Dead were also scheduled to perform after CSNY, but shortly before their scheduled appearance, they chose not to due to the increasing violence at the venue. "That's the way things went at Altamont—so badly that the Grateful Dead, the prime organizers and movers of the festival, didn't even get to play," wrote staff at Rolling Stone magazine in a detailed narrative on the event, terming it, in an additional follow-up piece, "rock and roll's all-time worst day, December 6th, a day when everything went perfectly wrong."
Many people would mark this event to be the end of the cultural 60s.

The 'Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5' album releases - December 12, 1969

Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5 is the debut studio album from Gary, Indiana-based soul family band the Jackson 5, released on the Motown label on December 12, 1969. The Jackson 5's lead singer, a preadolescent Michael Jackson and his four older brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon, became pop successes within months of this album's release. Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5's only single, "I Want You Back", became a number-one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 within weeks of the album's release. The album reached number 5 on the US Pop Albums chart, and spent nine weeks at No. 1 on the US R&B/Black Albums charts. To date, the Jackson 5's debut album has sold estimated 5 million copies worldwide.
If none of the events that described previously had transitioned us into the 70s to any of you, then this certainly did.

MAS*H releases in theaters - January 25, 1970

M*A*S*H (stylized on-screen as MASH) is a 1970 American dark war comedy film directed by Robert Altman and written by Ring Lardner Jr., based on Richard Hooker's 1968 novel MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors. The picture is the only theatrically released feature film in the M*A*S*H franchise.
The film depicts a unit of medical personnel stationed at a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) during the Korean War. It stars Donald Sutherland, Tom Skerritt, and Elliott Gould, with Sally Kellerman, Robert Duvall, René Auberjonois, Gary Burghoff, Roger Bowen, Michael Murphy, and in his film debut, professional football player Fred Williamson. Although the Korean War is the film's storyline setting, the subtext is the Vietnam War – a current event at the time the film was made. Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau, who saw the film in college, said M*A*S*H was "perfect for the times, the cacophony of American culture was brilliantly reproduced onscreen".
M*A*S*H became one of the biggest films of the early 1970s for 20th Century-Fox and is now considered one of the greatest films ever made and also won the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film, later named the Palme d'Or, at the 1970 Cannes Film Festival.
This film was a another huge sign of 70s culture as it inspired the television series M*A*S*H, which ran from 1972 to 1983. Gary Burghoff, who played Radar O'Reilly, was the only actor playing a major character who appeared in both the movie and the TV series. Altman despised the TV series, calling it "the antithesis of what we were trying to do" with the movie.

Paul McCartney announces his break from the Beatles - April 10, 1970

On April 10, 1970, when promoting the release of his forthcoming solo album, Paul McCartney announces that he is taking a break from the Beatles, the legendary rock band he had been a part of for a decade. It wasn't that much of a surprise. The Beatles spent the better part of three years breaking up in the late 1960s—and even longer than that hashing out who did what and why. By the spring of 1970, there was little more than a tangled set of business relationships keeping the group together. Each of the Beatles was pursuing his musical interests outside of the band, and there were no plans in place to record together as a group. But as far as the public knew, this was just a temporary state of affairs. No one had yet gone on the record with a definitive break-up statement. Paul, for his part, hedged his bets.
By year’s end, Paul would file suit to dissolve the Beatles’ business partnership, a formal process that would eventually make official the unofficial breakup he announced on this day in 1970.

The Kent State Massacre - May 4, 1970

In the spring of 1970, members of the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd of Kent State University demonstrators, killing four and wounding nine Kent State students. The impact of the shootings was dramatic. The event triggered a nationwide student strike that forced hundreds of colleges and universities to close. H. R. Haldeman, a top aide to President Richard Nixon, suggests the shootings had a direct impact on national politics.
In The Ends of Power, Haldeman (1978) states that the shootings at Kent State began the slide into Watergate, eventually destroying the Nixon administration. Beyond the direct effects of the May 4, the shootings have certainly come to symbolize the deep political and social divisions that so sharply divided the country during the Vietnam War era.

Jimi Hendrix passes away - September 18, 1970

On September 18, 1970, American musician Jimi Hendrix died in London at the age of 27. One of the 1960s' most influential guitarists, he was described by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music."
Hendrix's death was reportedly due to him aspirating on his own vomit, later dying of asphyxia, while intoxicated with barbiturates. At the inquest, the coroner, finding no evidence of suicide, and lacking sufficient evidence of the circumstances, recorded an open verdict. Dannemann stated that Hendrix had taken nine of her prescribed Vesparax sleeping tablets, 18 times the recommended dosage.
Jimi Hendrix's death was another huge blow to 60s culture and he would be another number added to the new "27 Club" list of celebrities that would continue with none other than.....

Janis Joplin passes away - October 4, 1970

On Sunday evening, October 4, 1970, Joplin was found dead on the floor of her room at the Landmark Motor Hotel by her road manager and close friend John Byrne Cooke. Alcohol was present in the room. Newspapers reported that no other drugs or paraphernalia were present.
According to a 1983 book authored by Joseph DiMona and Los Angeles County coroner Thomas Noguchi, evidence of narcotics was removed from the scene by a friend of Joplin and later put back after the person realized that an autopsy was going to reveal that narcotics were in her system. The book adds that prior to Joplin's death, Noguchi had investigated other fatal drug overdoses in Los Angeles where friends believed they were doing favors for decedents by removing evidence of narcotics, then they "thought things over" and returned to put back the evidence.
Noguchi performed an autopsy on Joplin and determined the cause of death to be a heroin overdose, possibly compounded by alcohol.
Joplin's death, just like Hendrix's, was a huge blow to the more optimistic culture of the 1960s, and the 27 Club list of celebrity deaths are continuing.

Other events that also had an impact that happened around this time period (give/take) that I could not fit on this list:

And this will conclude the first part of this transition. Stay tuned for the second part to this.
I hope you enjoyed it and I would appreciate it if you would comment on these.

2024.05.23 11:51 HallowsChaser Ex-BF was emotionally abusive & neglectful. Now, months after breaking up, he's ready to propose to someone new. AITAH for not wanting him to get married?

Strap in, cause this one's a doozy. I wouldn't believe it myself, if I hadn't lived through it. Cast: me (obvious), Ex (my ex-boyfriend)
So, I was 28 when I met Ex and was recently recovering from a severe depression caused by an abusive “friendship”. Ex was still attending college and is in his (now our) local military. During the six months we “long distance dated”, most of our time was spent chatting, playing games online together, and watching TV shows together (we’d use one of our ipads and would facetime so the other could watch as well). I was terrified to go back to college, but did for this guy.
After busting my butt forty hours a week and working myself to the bone for five months, I moved out across the country to be with my man. Things were great for a few months, with us going on in-person dates now and both of us felt like we were on cloud nine. For the most part I was happy with how things were going, and so was Ex. We had even been discussing marriage, and he kept insisting that he would propose to me as soon as his family had “sorted themselves out”.
I won’t go into details about his family situation, that’s his business not mine. I’ll leave it at this: since the death of his father, Ex felt that stepping up and taking the place of his late father is “his responsibility as the most mature sibling” (his words, not mine). This is important later.
So, we’d set two tentative wedding dates, both of which got rescheduled at the insistence of Ex's mother and siblings. After the second one, I saw a pattern start to emerge, and wasn’t happy with it. More and more, Ex started backing out of commitments for various family-related things and/or school stuff. I kept hearing “I’m busy with classes”, “my siblings need me”, and things like that. Ex always promised he’d make it up to me, but he rarely did. It had gotten to the point that I was literally asking for one hour a week with him, which is 1/168 of his time for each week – and, as you can probably guess, he didn’t.
For those who don’t know what the love languages are, I’ll sum them up: Spoken Word, Physical Touch, Gift-giving, Acts of Service, and Time Spent Together. My two primaries are Time and Touch, so you can probably see what Jerk's actions were telling me: that I don’t matter, that he couldn’t be bothered with me. Before I moved across the country, he would always call me beautiful and shower me with verbal affections and we were lovey-dovey with our words, so I thought Spoken Word was his love language.
Skipping ahead to March 2023 – after the second time he backed out of wedding date.
Due to a stomach flu, I'd opted to take a hot shower and sat down afterwards due to feeling dizzy. I didn't think much of it at the time due to how tired I was from all the vomiting. However, after sitting down, I fell the rest of the way and was unable to move on my own, to the point that I could barely reach my phone near me. I tried calling Ex for five minutes, until I realized my phone battery was about to die. So, I called my mom across the country to see if she could reach out to him. Soon after I told her what happened, I blacked out. I’m in and out of it for a while, shivering helplessly on the bathroom floor and also trying not to puke my guts out (again, had a stomach flu).
I later learned (after a few more similar episodes while healthy) that this was one of six variations of seizures and that I'm now prone to them. And yes, having a seizure in the middle of fighting off a stomach bug is extremely painful.
The next solid memory I had after my first seizure was of the door unlocking, and me calling out for help. I didn’t care who it was, only that someone had come to my rescue. To my surprise, the people entering weren’t my man at all, but my new roommate and one of my best friends. They helped me get dressed and warmed up, which was their first priority. While they did so, they listened in horror as I told them what happened – though, to be fair, we didn’t know I was prone to seizures back then. Then, when they asked what time this happened, I told them the approximate time I’d called my mother.
Turns out, I’d been on the bathroom floor for two hours by the time they’d arrived. What was more, I later learned that that dizzy spell was all the warning I would get prior to a seizure. Not fun, and I've been very lucky to have a dog that's unofficially trained to alert me to one hitting. She's been a very good girl, and has even alerted me to a seizure hitting when I felt no warning signs or any kind of stress. With doggo's help and warnings, I haven't been badly hurt by a seizure yet due to already being seated or lying down when they hit.
Anyways, back to ex-boyfriend.
Ex, when they called him, didn’t answer the first few times. He refused to come help, citing he was helping watch his underage siblings (the two youngest were ages 9 and 15 at the time). His other siblings that were of age were home, but couldn’t be bothered to help. Perhaps the most painful part of the situation was that I could hear him playing video games in the background throughout the phone call. What was almost as hurtful was the way I would choke out his name desperately for reassurance, and all Ex would say was “I’m watching my siblings, I can’t come help you”. At that point, I just wanted to hear reassurances from Ex that I would be alright, not have him there with me now that help had arrived. After everything was resolved with the seizure-illness combo, I told him such, and he shrugged it off citing that "you're okay now, so it all worked out".
Finally, in august of 2023, I’d had enough. We’d been scheduling a date together for three months so that we could have some time together, just the two of us. Ex backed out of that with less than three hours’ notice with the same excuses of needing to help his family. The trip to the fair we’d been planning on visiting together was cancelled, much to my dismay. When I heard he had taken his siblings to the fair instead, I’d finally lost all patience I’d had with his family and the situation that they hadn’t solved in nearly six years.
I admit, after a year of hearing the same excuses on repeat from Ex, I lost my temper and went off on his mother. I was hurt, frustrated, and didn’t understand why I wasn’t “good enough” for their family. I desperately wanted answers after a year of the same excuses repeatedly, and went off on her in the hopes of finally being heard. I ranted to her about my frustrations, and tried to demand information about why Ex kept cancelling out dates to be with her other children. To her immense credit, his mother stayed calm about the whole thing, and told me that she didn’t know what was going on in his head with that either. She explained what she did know and filled me in on why she was always so busy. Though still hurt and no closer to having answers, I apologized to her and explained why I was so distraught. She wasn't too happy with any of us that day - me or any of her kids.
In turn, my 30 year old boyfriend went off on me, ranting at me like I was a disobedient child that had thrown a tantrum. To be fair, I had thrown one in a way at his mother, albeit non-violently. He didn’t give me a chance to talk, or to explain anything. He just ranted at me for more than an hour and left telling me that we would take a break and reevaluate things once the school semester was over (it was about a week before the next college semester started). For the next couple hours I was in shock, and only snapped out of it when my roommate called my best friend for backup to help bring me back to reality.
It took them a few hours to coax me back into “real life”, at which point I had a meltdown. After I managed to get my emotions back together, I contacted Ex and told him that we were done. I told him I’d had enough of feeling like a “side piece” with his sole focus on being anything except me. I needed until April (about eight months, give or take) to get back in the dating game after what I’d gone through. Ex, on the other hand, started dating someone new just as soon as the school semester ended, and either broke up with her or got ghosted. Now, however, he is talking marriage with his newest girlfriend that he started dating less than six months ago.
On the one hand, I would never, EVER want to take him back after how I got treated. I’m still in therapy and struggling with depression because of how I was treated. I think of what he did, and I know he was emotionally abusive. He was also controlling, now that I think back on it. and, to be honest, I’m fairly sure his family wouldn’t have been respectful to me had I married into their family.
On the other hand, I can’t help but feel extremely hurt after hearing that he’s with someone else. I can't help but wish this relationship will fail as well, and hope that he'll learn how much his actions can (and do) hurt others around him.
I don’t want to get revenge on Ex, I know that’s not fair to either of us. I know revenge is a double-edged sword, unless it's just "the best revenge is living well" adage. I’m not saying I was perfect, we both had our faults in how things went down between us. But I can’t help wishing his new girlfriend won’t accept any proposal he will give to her. I know (from mutual friends) that Ex (who’s now 31) hasn’t changed or learned anything from the breakup. Those same mutual friends, however, have told me that I’ve made more progress (mentally and maturity-wise) since this March than he has.
I can’t help but wish that my ex-boyfriend won’t get married after how he treated me. Does that make me the AH?
TLDR: I (30F) and my ex (31M) dated for nearly two years, during which he left me helpless alone after a seizure for two hours. I broke up with both my ex-boyfriends after realizing that they were emotionally abusive and/or neglectful. Despite breaking up with them to protect myself, I can’t help but wonder if my not wanting them to be happy makes me the AH.

2024.05.23 10:45 astrocat95 Getting to Know Their Work: Series 6

Its Series 6 day!
Firstly SUPER THANK YOU to u/LulusMum for helping organize the document. You should see it now- its incredible!
Taskmaster has led to find some of my favorite comedic work (stand up specials/TV shows etc) done by the alum. I would avoid one-off appearances on panel shows (Bob Mortimer on WILTY would be fine because of the sheer amount of material, but single appearances are harder to keep track of)
Its obviously super hard to keep track of that so I was going to make a little document based on what y'all recommend of the contestant's work beyond TM. Doing it by person will take forever so I thought by series would be a good start.
As series go by I will keep updating this https://docs.google.com/document/d/1C6O7dEy2--bhjD41JD8lyC_tjgErpah9EO2A_TQ4OO0/edit?usp=sharing (S1-4 are here- S5 will be added shortly- if I missed something lmk!)
So series 6 cast:

2024.05.23 10:33 Yurii_S_Kh Sin Is Marriage with Satan. Revelation: Removing the Veil, Part 11

Sin Is Marriage with Satan. Revelation: Removing the Veil, Part 11
We continue reading the book of Revelation. The Apostle and Evangelist John, while on the island of Patmos, on the Lord’s Day, saw Christ before him in great glory, Who told him some things about the bishops of the seven Churches of Asia Minor. He calls the bishops the angels of the Churches. We already read the epistles to the bishops of the Churches of Ephesus, Smyrna, and Pergamos.
Apostle John the Theologian and his disciple, the Apostle Prochorus
Now we turn to the epistle to the angel of the Church of Thyatira: And unto the angel of the Church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, Who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass (Rev. 2:18). Do you remember how the Apostle John saw Christ? His feet were like fine brass, a precious metal, and his eyes like flames of fire. He saw Him in such striking glory. Christ asks to write to the bishop about the following: I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first (Rev. 2:19). First the Lord tells him about good deeds—this bishop had love, faith, patience, and served sincerely. His last works were greater than the first. Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce My servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols (Rev. 2:20). You see, God speaks very directly and sincerely to man. God doesn’t play tricks us on and doesn’t laugh at us. God doesn’t act like we do: “Should I tell him or not? Maybe he’ll misunderstand me. I hope he doesn’t think anything bad about me, doesn’t get offended.”
God speaks directly. Of course, only God can do this, not us, because we don’t see the soul of another as God sees it. But when the Church speaks about something, for example, it doesn’t allow heretics to commune, it doesn’t allow us to pray together with heretics, it calls something a heresy or delusion, then it speaks about it very definitely. And we start arguing that that it didn’t need to be said, that it’s better to do everything with love, it’s better not to tell someone, so as not to hurt him, that God is for everyone…
Such manifestations of love, of course, aren’t real. We think we have love by behaving this way. But deeds and actions that harm another can’t be called love. Like a doctor, despite all his love for you, should tell you the truth. And it’s important that you tell the truth for the doctor to make the correct diagnosis. If a doctor, out of love, doesn’t want to give a diagnosis, and says: “Mama, what a wonderful child you have, a creation of God; it’s impossible that he’d be sick with something; go home.” But the child could die on the way. The doctor has to diagnose, he has to understand what’s happening with the boy, and tell the patient about it. No matter how much he loves you, he must, unfortunately, tell you about your problem. That’s the only way to cure someone.
When the Church makes a “spiritual diagnosis,” it says: “This is a delusion, a heresy, it cuts you off from the Church of Christ and Divine Communion.” The Church acts this way not because it hates or rejects anyone. It acts this way with the goal of healing a man with all its love, with all its sincerity; it calls things as they are for the sake of saving a man. We can’t tell someone: “Don’t worry, my dear, we’re all the same; we all believe in one God, we’re all children of God.” That’s a mistake. You can’t tell someone: “Don’t worry.” You’ll harm him. I have problems with blood sugar, and you’ll start saying: “Don’t worry, eat some cake—nothing bad will happen. And if you’re still hungry, eat some more.” Okay, thank you very much for your love, but that’s ruinous for me. Of course, I’ll eat everything; it’ll all be gone in a minute, but what then? Such love is destructive.
You can’t tell a heretic: “It doesn’t matter. We’re all God’s people. You believe in God too.” You harm him this way. Tell him the truth. “I love you, very much, I value your deeds, but you have some problems. You’re outside the Church. You can’t prosper outside the Church; you need to enter the Church.” Just as Christ says: “I know your deeds; I know you’re a good person, that you love God.”
The Holy Fathers and the shamed heretics. Fresco from the Patriarchate of Peć in Kosovo
Quite often, both I and other spiritual fathers face such difficulties. Someone comes to see you, a Freemason. He asks: “Can I receive Communion? Can I be in the Church?” You say: “Stop! Freemasonry, Masonic lodges, altars, and the Church are not compatible with each other. Masonic lodges are one thing and the Church of Christ is another.”
The man might resist, resent, come and go a hundred times, but by refusing, we leave him the opportunity to be saved.
One day, a Catholic, a very pleasant man, a university teacher, came to see our Elder on the Holy Mountain. He told the Elder:
“You know, I love Orthodoxy, the Holy Fathers; I read the Holy Fathers (and indeed, he knew the works of the Church Fathers very well), I try to live in an Orthodox manner, but I can’t leave my church, Catholicism.”
The Elder responded:
“You’re a good man, and everything you do is very good. But you don’t belong to the Church; you’re outside of the Church.”
The Catholic started walking back and forth. The Elder was adamant. I remember, this Catholic teacher spent three or four days in bed; we offered him to get up and eat something, but nothing helped. We were worried he was going to die.
“Have some tea!”—no answer. He had experienced a great shock. We asked the Elder to talk with him a bit.
“Leave him alone. Nothing bad will happen to him,” the Elder said.
And indeed, nothing happened. The Catholic struggled with himself and came and went for three years before he decided to become Orthodox.
Westminster Abbey, London
“If you want to enter the Church, there’s no other path. There’s one Church of Christ, not ten.”
We believe “in One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.” There can’t be many Churches—that’s heresy. This man suffered to accept it. But it’s the truth. Had the Elder said to him: “My son, don’t worry! Stay where you are; since you read the Fathers and you try to live like an Orthodox Christian, that’s good enough,” then nothing would have come out of it. The man suffered, was sick from the blow, but managed to come out of it and accept the truth, get baptized, and become Orthodox. Today he’s an Orthodox priest in Rome, in Italy; he tries to labor spiritually. Now he talks about what he had to go through.
The truth often shakes us; it’s hard for us to receive it. But you can’t tell someone else: “Don’t worry, live however you want.” He tells you he’s married but he meets up with another woman when he has free time. When his wife annoys him, he can go to the other woman for comfort and enjoyment.
“My dear son, that’s not how it’s done.” “No worries, it was our mutual decision.” You can’t do that. If you want, do as you know how; you have the right—you’re a free man. But that’s not how to do it. He’s suffering, he’s in pain; he eats himself up on the inside until he decides to stop. And if you tell him: “It’s okay, of course, you need comfort, you're still young, you can repent when you're older,” then this man is lost.
God doesn’t lie to people
God doesn’t lie to people. You see, here He’s telling the bishops the truth. He also speaks about the good things: I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first. Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee. What is He talking about? Because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce My servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols (Rev. 2:19-20).
We don’t know for sure if the bishop had a wife Jezebel, because bishops were mostly married in the early centuries of Christianity. Perhaps he really was married to a Jezebel, who was a false prophetess, teaching people the heresy of the Nicolaitanes, who said you can achieve salvation by giving in to bodily passions and lusts, fornication, and the like. Or this bishop allowed this heresy in his Church. It was his fault for allowing heretics to present themselves as prophets and teach the servants of God falsehoods, that fornication and eating food offered to idols is permissible, that there’s nothing terrible in this.
The Nicolaitan heresy greatly disturbed the early Church, because Nicholas was one of the seven deacons chosen by the Holy Spirit; he was an important, revered person in the Church.
The Apostle Peter ordains the seven deacons, fresco of the New Tokali Church in Cappadocia
But he became an heresiarch, teaching that asceticism isn’t just fasting, prayer, and abstinence, but also another endeavor—engaging in carnal lusts to overcome your body and your very self. It’s a delusion, but it penetrated into the Church and disturbed it. The heresiarch Nicholas also proposed freely eating food offered to idols—meat sacrificed to false gods. God didn’t want the bishop to accept such things. Christ doesn’t want such things; He says: I have a few things against thee.
There have always been false brethren in the Church, false Christians, false prophets. And there still are today. If you turn on the TV, you’ll see various prophets and prophetesses. They work “miracles,” every night they “see” the Theotokos, every day they “see” Christ. Unfortunately, there are people who believe this. Such satanic gifts have always existed, and they are always opposed to the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
It continues: And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not (Rev. 2:21). The Lord gave this woman (or this heresy) time for repentance, but she didn’t want to give up her sins. Fornication isn’t only a carnal sin but also a spiritual departure from God. Man is called to marriage with Christ. Christ wants to be the Bridegroom of our soul.
When a man moves towards sin, it’s spiritual fornication. He departs from God and contracts a marriage with sin and satan. Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds (Rev. 2:22). The Lord will leave them where they sin; they will be punished by their deeds. They will experience great tribulations through this; they will go through trials. God won’t punish, but our deeds will punish us and exact a toll from us. Satan is man’s worst enemy. Sin will never lead us to good; it brings only evil, torment, and suffering. It’s the consequence of our deeds, not the punishment of God.
Gustave Doré, Illustration to Milton’s Paradise Lost, 1866
And I will kill her children with death; and all the Churches shall know that I am He Which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works (Rev. 2:23). The word of God is harsh. It doesn’t mean God will kill these children. Every sin brings death. Sin gives birth to death; the consequences of sin are fatal, they lead to spiritual death, the most terrible kind. The soul withers. Sin isn’t terrible because it’s a kind of transgression of the law of God. When you break the law, you ask for forgiveness, and that’s the end of it. But sin has a terrible consequence—it kills. The soul withers through sin. Anyone who knows the state when his soul is alive, how he prays and is close to God, immediately feels like he’s turned into a corpse if he happens to sin. He’s not moved by anything anymore. If before that he was moved by the very name of Christ, his heart began to tremble, tears flowed, he hurried to church to receive Communion, to be at Vigil with desire and love, he forgot everything to experience something spiritual, then man dies in sin: Even if he sees Christ in front of him, he feels nothing. Sin is the death of the soul.
I am He Which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works (Rev. 2:23). Christ uses the expression “search the reins and heart” speaking of Himself in the Old and the New Testaments. This is one of the proofs that the One Who spoke in the Old Testament is the pre-Incarnate Christ, the un-incarnate Word of God. In the New Testament, the Incarnate Word speaks, so He uses the same expressions that in the Old Testament belonged to Yahweh, the Lord. In the New Testament, they belong to Christ.
Why does He search the reins and the heart? At that time, people believed that the heart contains a man’s memories and thoughts, that it’s the center of everything; and the reins1 were the center of all desires. The Lord will reward everyone according to their deeds; He’s the Judge of the universe. Again, these are words from the Old Testament. Knowing these words, you can answer Jehovah’s Witnesses who say that Christ was created, that He wasn’t in the Old Testament.
To be continued…

2024.05.23 07:21 AccomplishedSpare129 Deco M4 with IoT devices

I'm planning to buy Deco M4 and setup IoT devices with it. In my research, i found that Deco didn't support separate SSID for 2.4 and 5Ghz, the only option is to use 2.4Ghz Guest network to run IoT devices.
I want to know if anyone have any problem with this setup ? Can it work properly with smart home hub (Google Nest, Smartthing or even Home Assistant) ?
And does main network and guest network have the same ip address ? Can i connect to the main network and play LAN game with someone connect to my guest network ? Same for cast phone screen from main network to TV on guest network ?

2024.05.23 07:02 shadowlarx Tron (1982), Tron: Legacy (2010)

Tron (1982), Tron: Legacy (2010)
Greetings, programs. Fire up your Light Cycles. We’re going inside the world of the Grid.

Tron

Arcade owner and video game designer Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) searches for proof that ENCOM CEO Ed Dillinger (David Warner) stole his design for a popular game, threatening Dillinger’s reign at ENCOM and the plans of Dillinger’s sentient Master Control Program (also played by Warner). When Flynn’s friends, Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) and Lora Baines (Cindy Morgan), help him break into ENCOM to look for proof, the MCP uses an experimental laser developed by Lora’s superior Dr. Walter Gibbs (Barnard Hughes) to digitize Flynn and send him into cyberspace. There, Flynn teams up with digital programs Tron, Yori and Dumont (also played by Boxleitner, Morgan and Hughes) to defeat the MCP and his general Sark (Warner), free the programs and get Flynn home.
This film is as visually stunning as ever and this film is still a delight after over 40 years. It was one of the earliest films to use extensive CGI and, while that CGI is clearly dated compared to what CGI can do today, it still deserves credit for being one of the early pioneers in the field. Also deserving of credit are the cast, particularly Warner for playing three different characters. They really helped sell the magic and wonder of cyberspace and did a fantastic job making us care about computer programs like they’re actual people. This film really made us look at computers in a new way. Not just in the context of the film but also what they can do in real life and there’s no telling just how many technological advances were inspired by this film. It almost certainly served as inspiration for one of my favorite childhood TV shows, ReBoot, itself a pioneer for being one of the earliest fully CGI television series.

Tron: Legacy

Twenty years after the mysterious disappearance of Kevin Flynn, his adult son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) lives a rebellious lifestyle. Although he is ENCOM’s primary shareholder, he has little to do with the company and his father’s legacy beyond occasionally pulling pranks on the board of directors. Until, one night, Flynn’s friend and partner Alan Bradley tells Sam of a mysterious message originating from Flynn’s old arcade. Sam goes to investigate and finds himself transported to the Grid, a digital cyberspace Flynn created after his adventures in the first film. Unfortunately, Sam learns that the Grid is a dictatorship run by Clu, a corrupted program Flynn developed that organized a coup and took over, forcing Flynn into abandoning Sam and going into hiding. Now Sam must team up with his long lost father and an isomorphic algorithm named Quorra (Olivia Wilde) to stop Clu from translating himself into the real world and continuing his reign of terror.
Obviously, in the 28 years since the original film, CGI moved forward by leaps and bounds, resulting in an even more visually captivating feel for this world. Bridges continues to act his socks off as Flynn and Clu. Olivia Wilde is a compelling character as Quorra, naive and eager to learn but also fierce and capable. Michael Sheen absolutely owns the room during his scenes as Zuse and James Frain added a nice dose of humor as Clu’s henchman Jarvis. Garrett Hedlund was decent as Sam but seemed a little out of his depth at times. Daft Punk provided the techno soundtrack, which felt pitch perfect in every scene. The Light Cycles got an exciting upgrade and the arena scene felt like a massive thrill. All in all, an enjoyable film, if not quite as groundbreaking as the original.

2024.05.23 06:35 captainhimejoshi What I love about XO Kitty as a Korean

Back when XO Kitty first released I felt like online spaces were saturated with criticism towards the show’s portrayal of Korean culture, but solely from koreaboos. I never really saw any Korean people talking about it, so here’s my perspective as a Korean American who loves the show! (Content warnings for discussions of orientalism, sexism, homophobia, reproductive rights)
  1. Frequent usage of Korean in dialogue. Up until very, very recently, American film and television has been quite stingy with usage of foreign language. The “one-inch tall barrier of subtitles”, as Parasite director Bong Joon Ho calls it, has proved to be a difficult hurdle for Western audiences to overcome. Nowadays, with the booming popularity of kdramas, people are more used to hearing Korean on TV, but there is still that subconcious divide of “Korean belongs in Korean films, and English belongs in American films.” The film Minari, for example, was categorized by the Golden Globes as a foreign film despite being set in America and directed by an American, solely because the majority of the film is in Korean. Having Korean spoken multiple times in nearly if not every episode of XO Kitty was a welcome surprise for me. While it totally makes sense narratively for Korean characters to speak Korean in Korea, it’s a huge step forward for American television.
  2. Casting of Korean actors. While casting Korean actors is probably necessary if you’re including lots of conversations in Korean (see above), XO Kitty could have easily cast actors of any East Asian descent and re-written their characters converse in English. (Randall Park, a Korean actor, was cast in Fresh Off the Boat, and Simu Liu, a Chinese actor, was cast in Kim’s Convenience, both with little or no complaint.) Taking care to cast Korean actors is really huge, especially since Jenny Han famously had to fight to get an Asian actress to play Lara Jean. So I was really impressed and happy that they took this step. (As a personal note, I don’t mind that the Covey Girls aren’t played by Korean actors, since I remember what an achievement it was that they cast Asian actors at all.)
  3. Nuanced portrayal of queerness in Korea. LGBTQ issues in East Asia are a tricky topic. I tend to see only two perspectives ever discussed: 1) the romanticization of East Asia as “the home of BL/GL” by Western queers and an ignorance of the conservative culture, and 2) a condemnation of East Asia as backwards compared to the enlightened West, while ignoring the existence and struggles of actual queer Asians living in their native countries. As a queer Korean American myself, it’s heartbreaking to see such an important topic pigeonholed in either direction. However, watching XO Kitty felt like a breath of fresh air. The story addressed the very real homophobia of Korean culture while still centering the experiences of the queer people who live there: Q reminds Kitty that Korea is not as accepting of his sexuality when she tries to matchmake him in the cafeteria, and Yuri struggles the entire first season to hide her sexuality and relationship from her mom. My compliments and thanks go out to the writers and sensitivity readers who worked on these scenes; it warmed my little gay heart.
  4. Tidbits of traditional Korean culture. Aspects of traditional Korean culture are sprinkled naturally into the story, from the Chuseok celebrations to the fan dance in hanbok, and become integral to the plot. This in particular made me thrilled, as the reason I got into the “To All the Boys” franchise was because I heard that Jenny Han had fought hard to have an Asian female lead. Unfortunately, when I watched the first movie, I was disappointed to find there was very little Korean culture referenced in it, and that Lara Jean’s mother — her one tie to her culture — wasn’t even present in the story. Comparatively, XO Kitty is bursting with Korean culture, while still feeling accessible to American audiences.
  5. The subplot of Jina’s preganancy tying into women’s rights in South Korea. Women’s reproductive rights are an especially huge issue in Korea (I remember being aware of it and reading/watching info about it as early as middle school, and I grew up in a pretty traditional/conservative setting). The subplot of Jina’s pregnancy serves as the kickstarter to more conversations about this topic. Though not discussed at length, the repeated emphasis of how important it was that Eve let her use her name demonstrates how heavy the stigma — and social punishment — for teenage pregnancy would be. Young Jina’s fear of her pregnancy being discovered also parallels Yuri’s fear of her sexuality being discovered, tying mother and daughter together in an intergenerational conversation on Korean feminism and queer rights.
  6. Subtle nod to the cringeness of koreaboos. XO Kitty’s inclusion of Madison Miller was a classy way of saying the writers were well aware of the West’s narrow-minded obsession with Hallyu. Madison’s shameless declaration of her playlist being exclusively kpop and her wide-eyed obsession with being in Korea at all earns her some judgemental looks. For me, this was one an early, funny, and unfortunately relateable sign that Koreans had actually been in the writing room. It’s worth noting that Madison isn’t a bad person — just overzealous and a tad bit ignorant — which is a fair enough characterization for me. More importantly, the inclusion of a koreaboo character is another way of affirming that XO Kitty is a Korean story for and by Koreans, rather than another contribution to the rose-tinted Western gaze on Korea.
Sorry this got so long, and way longer than I intended. Obviously XO Kitty isn’t a perfect show, but I rarely (if at all) see these aspects of it praised. I want to shed light on them because I don’t think non-Korean fans are aware of these points, or might think they lack the proper background to comment on it. In the end though these are only my opinions, and others might disagree. But I’d be happy to answer other questions about my personal thoughts on XO Kitty! 🩷🩷🩷

2024.05.23 06:24 TechNerd-1138 First Vr - Quest 3 honest review, pros, cons, tips and questions.

I'm a 30-something guy and I was never interested in VR as it was either too expensive for me or just not powerful enough to spend so much money on something that was at the time just a gimmick. But after seeing some of the video on the Meta Quest 3 pass-through especially this one and reading the reviews I decided to bite the bullet and I bought the Meta Quest 3 128gb with a Kiwi powerbank strap. I’m writing this post using the Virtual Desktop app + Passthrough
This is a post for people that are on the fence if they should buy a VR headset. It will be a long post with first impressions, pros and cons, review of certain apps (not games) and a couple of questions to the community as I’m not able to solve everything on my own.
My PC: Legion 7 2021. 3070, 64gb, Ryzen 7 5800h

Why I bought Vr in order of importance:

  1. Multitasking while using Passthrough. Doing dishes, folding cloths, doing chores, cooking, ironing 10 shirts. Mostly watching youtube and having whatsapp/messenger open next to the video
  2. Multitasking in front of my PC on a huge screen. I wanted to sit in the middle of a video loop forest and work on 2-3 monitors (Excel, SQL, youtube, Discord etc)
  3. Watching youtube and movies on a huge screen while sitting comfortably on my couch (I only have a small old TV at home)
  4. Being inside the 360 pictures I took during my trips using the Pixel Sphere setting + watching 360 videos
  5. Playing games like Elite Dangerous, Subnautica (waited for a VR headset before playing this game), Star Wars Squadrons, Walking Dead SS, Into the Radius, HL Alyx
  6. Chatting in VRchat
  7. Trying "interesting videos" if you know what I mean...

Stuff that I bought years ago which work with my Quest 3 and I had no idea it will work in VR

  1. Logitech Mx keys and mx keys mini. I have 2 BT keyboards and both are supported by Quest 3 as it shows them in 3D in the official meta apps. Pretty cool not going to lie.
  2. Steelseries 9 headset – It has an audio jack which I connect using a short 3.5mm cable to the headset so I can have 3 audio sources at once. One from the PC using the dongle, One using BT from my phone and one from the headset using the audio jack. Magic
  3. Chromecast 4.0. It’s fun to see what my gf is seeing while she is playing. This is how I can see that the quality of the passthrough on the casted video is better than the passthrough that you see in the headset.

First impressions

  1. The headset is really well made but the basic straps are really looking cheap. It was a good idea to buy the kiwi pro strap.
  2. The first time I powered it on and played the game “first encounter” I had a big grin like when I was 10 and unboxing the Sega Genesis. The first experience is incredible, my gf compared it to “It’s like seeing the internet for the first time”

The Pros:

  1. Really good resolutions so you can read small text clearly
  2. The headset is light enough to use it for 2-3 hours without neck pain.
  3. How quickly you just power it on and start using it. It takes about a minute to power on, enter pin, open Virtual desktop and use my PC on a huge virtual 70 inch screen
  4. The headset is “small” what I mean by that is that you can easily transport it. I had no issues transporting it in the a case in my backpack.
  5. The build-in speakers are shockingly good. I’m normally using my headphones but without them the headset is very useable just on the speakers.

The Tips:

  1. The hand tracking is really nice but you don’t have to use the two fingers click. You can just tap the buttons with your finger.
  2. I used the Sidequest to update the texture size and mhz but I don’t really see any difference. Is it better to use the QuestGamesOptimizer? And do you really need to reapply it everytime you power the headset?

The Cons or “maybe I’m doing something wrong and need your help”:

  1. There are artifacts in my headset when I use it for more than an hour and while looking at the floor. It’s like old CRT snow and it appears for a millisecond – I wonder if it’s because of the changed texture size?
  2. The passthrough doesn't look in real life as clear as on the videos even if I'm in a super bright room. When you record what you see inside the headset the recording is much clearer than what you see. You can't read your PC monitor, you can't read your smartphone screen.
  3. The FOV is not as wide as I expected. I would compare it to a very tight snorkelling mask
  4. The headset will not remember your most used positions. Each time you will use the headset you will have to set the boundaries or the sitting position again and again.
  5. The battery is fine. I didn’t expect for it to work for 5 hours but 1h30 is a bit lacking. With a 10k powerbank strap you can go up to 2h30.
  6. The blacks are not as deep as I expected. I watched the whole Shogun Tv show on the Vr headset and when there were scenes in the dark I could not see any details all the while when some of the scenes had dark and bright scenes the black was “dark-grey”
  7. I wear glasses and when I set the headset to the perfect position my glasses are touching the lenses and creating like some sort of condensation or smudges exactly in the middle top of my field of view – it is annoying
  8. Multitasking in front of the desktop is still not it. I’m looking for an app where I will be able to use my 2 physical monitors, to have a portal passthrough to see my drink and keyboard, be able to create a virtual monitor and have minimal lag (either on wifi or cable). None has it. I tried 4-5 apps and none is perfect, you can read more about it below.
  9. I bought the Syntech Link cable and 80% of the time it doesn’t work (doesn’t see the Meta quest app) and it charges too slowly the headset.
  10. The amount of interesting 360 videos on youtube is very small
  11. I assumed that the Quest 3 will also work in the dark as it has IR tracking? But apparently it doesn't have the IR light (you have to buy it). But then I read that even with the IR light you can't use the passthrough in dark like with the Quest 2
  12. Prices on the Meta store. The Climb for $30?! Fruit ninja 2 for $25? Beat Saver for $30?! I'm sorry but these are not games like Fallout, God of War, Uncharted or Total War where hundreds of devs worked for years on the music, graphics, story, UI/UX...
  13. The VRchat – tried it, never again. I expected it to be 70% trolls but not 95%.
  14. Can’t use one controller and one hand at the same time. It’s either controllers or hands after you laid the controllers flat.
  15. All “interesting videos” are 30GB+ or are paid. Way too much hassle for a 15 minutes job. IT should be more accessible and cheaper.

The Apps

  1. The meta software/launcher:
  1. The Productivity apps to use your desktop

What's next?

Thank you for reading
