TL;DR: Toxic job, anxiety disorder, trying to figure out exit strategy, do I need a lawyer to protect me against risk?
I have worked in a very unpleasant and toxic environment at a private university for 2 years and had 4 bosses. I took the job - my first offer - in a field I had newly transitioned to, so I was willing to put up with a lot of bullshit.
Unfortunately I also have a horrible anxiety disorder, and this is an environment where very anxiety-inducing, punitive measures are frequently used. I have disclosed this to HR and Boss #2 & Boss #4. After Boss #2 became my boss, I also verbally reported to HR that I felt Boss #1 was previously engaging in bullying behavior towards me, that I only wanted to document it and did not want it addressed because I feared retaliation.
This is an organization that is losing money and making bad decisions on how to make up for lost revenue. I am on the higher paid end for my role, and of late many higher-paid people are being pushed out to hire cheaper labor. It was made clear to me on multiple occasions Bosses #1 & #4 that I can easily be replaced by contractors for less or that the work I’m doing is not worth the pay I’m receiving. Boss #4 has also engaged in unethical (but not technically illegal) behavior, but has been at the organization for 30 years. Boss #4 is clearly not going anywhere.
I am having panic attacks nearly daily because Boss #4 is scrutinizing my work extremely closely, contacting me out of office hours, and moving goal posts in addition to making the bulk of my job “other duties as assigned.” Boss #4 wants to know where I am and what I’m doing at all times. This behavior makes me super anxious and I’ve communicated that. Boss #4 has also “caught” me using my personal email as a dummy account to test out some tech features in my own private tech space, but she made it seem that I could be using it to look at private user information which would be a FERPA violation. I am quite sure I mentioned using this for testing and was certainly not hiding it.
We’re all unhappy. I want to leave this job but want to do so on my terms in terms of exit strategy. I’ve hired an employment lawyer in the past, but that was in MA, not RI, and it was for a truly clear and awful situation. I did a free consultation with an RI employment lawyer and he felt that they would likely PIP me, terminate me, and not protest an unemployment claim. He did not think I needed a lawyer. But I know that this employer is quite vindictive, and has frequently made narratives to fit decisions for termination. I’m clearly a bad fit, and I dread going to work, but I need a job until I can transition elsewhere so it is what it is for now.
I’m terrified this employer will name misconduct as the reason for a termination, and I will be humiliated and have no recourse for collecting unemployment, which I would need. I’m sure I’ve done something to violate company policy in the 2 years I have been there- if they want to find something, I’m sure they can. I have had panic attacks in my sleep because of this. Should I hire a lawyer just in case? My best hope at this time would a constructive dismissal with uncontested unemployment and no negative reference from them and/or some kind of non-disparagement agreement. How much risk am I exposed to here?

This is a confusing and long situation, so I'll try to be as clear as possible.
Background: I'm a full-time Audio visual technician for an international company, and recently, us techs were told that due to the volatile seasonal nature of our job, that we should apply for part-time unemployment when hours get slow. Around February, I began taking physical therapy for a non-current-work related back pain that is from an injury back in 2018. I mentioned this in closing notes for the day, to explain why a set wasn't fully finished by the time I needed to clock out, so the morning team knew what to finish. My boss told me I needed to provide documentation which then snowballed into the situation I'm in now.
It all came to a head in late March when I gave a doctor's note (that was my PCP and did not feel qualified to Diagnose me with anything, but wrote that I could perform light duty with a weight limitation and gave a date of 4/24/24 so I could go through the proper channels of doctors to get a proper diagnosis)
Come end of March/Early April, the work dried up and I applied for unemployment. It obviously took some time to get started. (also to note, I have an auditory processing disorder, and a mild learning disorder, so phone calls are not my friend, which doesn't help when EDD forces phone interactions with jargon I don't and can't understand)
EDD said there was some issue with my application and that a phone interview was scheduled. EDD never called, so I called them and let them know what was happening, and I mentioned the doctor snafu that was taking place. I now realize that was a bad call in my part.
When hours started coming back, I still wasn't getting any, and was told that my job could not accommodate me for my injury, which was not the case, as another director from a different property found audio operator jobs for me. When it was time to apply for benefits, I put in the box asking if I was too sick or injured to work full time. I put no, because I had a doctor's note that said "light duty" not "cannot return to work until ______" I work in audio visual, and have multiple skills within the field that my main property could have accommodated for but did not, and was almost forced into LOA.
Another phone interview was scheduled due to flagged information. This phone call, I was interrogated, incriminated, set to be willfully giving false information, and that the department would give a decision on my case. Most of the questions I did not fully understand, which was made apparent by the caller's exasperated tone in responding to me, and saying "That's not what I asked" and repeated the questions in the same format.
A few days later, I received the notice that my case was disqualified due to "giving wrong information or withholding information" and said that I cannot receive benefits for 3 years from the disqualification effective date unless it is satisfied at an earlier date. All this is to say, I know one cannot have an open Unemployment and STDI case at the same time, but this first was unemployment and then became SDTI, and now I'm being punished for not understanding the criteria and feeling pressured to answer questions I did not understand due to my disorders. I don't know how to appeal to this, or if that 3 years means I can't claim unemployment in the coming months or years when hours get slim or disappear again, well after this injury issue is over. I am continuing to apply, and just did the last two weeks, now saying "yes" to too injured even though that isn't the case, still making too much (which is fine because that no hour period is over for the moment) and still seeing "disqualified".
I really don't know what to do here.

Hello all, long story short, my friend (she is from India and so are her captors/employers) is a victim of "forced labor" human trafficking. She has gone to hell and back in the last 7 years and has finally mustered the strength to leave, I am picking her up tonight at 10:30 p.m. and I am terrified... If you're interested in reading more details about her ordeal, read the long paragraphs below, but in short... my plan is to drive her up to the Indian Consulate in San Francisco, CA (she has recently talked to her sister in India who informed her that this is what she should do in order to go back to India, but what if she's wrong?) which is where she will get help and be on her way to India? Is this correct? I have never done this before and I am not sure what to do... The last thing I want to do is to drive my friend (who has zero money, an expired visa, no passport, speaks broken English, and is extremely vulnerable) to a place where she won't be helped and she has nowhere to turn to.
I met (let's call her Maria) Maria, about 2.5 years ago. We are both vendors at local Farmers markets here in Los Angeles, CA. From the MOMENT I met her, I knew something was very wrong. On my first day arriving at a specific farmers market, she and her boss were my next-booth neighbors. I asked Maria, "Hello, it's my first day here at this market, do you know if I can park at xy street or would I get a ticket??". She looked at me and immediately walked away. Her boss right away stepped up and said "Don't ask her, she wouldn't know, yes you can park at xy street". I thought well that's strange... why did she not let her talk... that girl looks scared. I had never seen such a tired and defeated looking human in my life. Most times her boss left her there to work while she went and worked other markets. Well I got to know maria and she became a very special friend of mine, she is caring, selfless and has all the good traits any good and decent human does. I don't know where to begin with describing what she's gone through. Her English is broken but I can understand 95% of what she tells me. I will try my best but I don't know every single detail.
She knows these people since when she lived back in India with her mom, dad, brothers, sisters. These suspects have businesses here in the U.S and over in India and employ both her father and uncles. They told Maria that they had an opportunity for her if she was interested. There was a man who was looking for a wife and they had told this man about Maria, he was interested. The plan was for Maria to travel to the U.S, marry this man, and employment with these suspects was guaranteed. Since her life was hard over there, she was intrigued and accepted. When she arrived they gave her the runaround...seems there was never a man for her to marry, instead they had her work endlessly on their business that is ran from a remote farming community here in Southern California. They threatened her by telling her they'd hurt her family back in India AND they'd lose their jobs, they'd hurt her, they'd do this, they'd do that. They have beaten her so many times, I've seen the bruises and begged her to let me take pictures that I would keep privately (but for proof if in the future they were needed) but every time I would ask, she'd always immediately refuse and said she'd have hell to pay if they found out. They have told her that she will never talk to her family back in India and she has not been able to do so since she left India.
They have her sleep inside a barn with the animals. They humiliate her, the husband and wife (and sister of wife) hit her so often and even broke her nose once. You can actually see where her nose healed crooked. There's been times where I did not see her for 2 or 3 weeks straight and sure enough, it was because she had some sort of injury she was healing (black eye, etc.). She has ran away several times only to go back several hours later because she has nowhere to go and is scared shitless. She basically works 24/7 too. She is not allowed to talk to anyone and when she and I are both at the same market (and her boss is dropping her off) we have to pretend to not know each other. Her boss picks her (and the equipment) up from the farmers market sometimes at 5-6 p.m. Mind you... all us other vendors have left at 2pm. So she just waits and waits to be picked up. She is not allowed to have ANY technology. She is not able to watch TV (she doesn't live inside a house anyway), when I was getting to know her... i realized she doesn't even know what is going on in the world (doesn't even know school shootings exist in this country). Her captors go through her things, they get extremely upset if vendor friends gift her items, (little pastries, gifts, etc. that they sell) or make conversation with her. For Christmas, my birthday, any holiday, she will go out of her way to give me a little gift (even if it's an insignificant little thing like a nail polish etc.) and she has given me her food when she knows I'm having a hard day and I'm upset (she knows I deal with an abusive husband and we bond over our difficult experiences) just to cheer me up. Little by little I have convinced her that she can trust me and that I would drive her to the airport and pay for her ticket, etc to get her back to India and escape from this abuse. I got her a cell phone that she only uses for internet that she has to keep hidden. Well with that cell phone and apps she was finally able to contact her family. She said that they said that they had not had jobs with these people for years and basically all the fear they put into her was B.S. They have for years been looking for her. She's still scared shitless but she says she cannot take it anymore. I have lost sleep over what my friend goes through. I don't know anyone who has suffered as much as she has. Again, what I described above is not all she has shared with me.. it's worse.
She doesn't want me to meet her at the ranch where she lives because she fears for my safety. She worries they will do something to me out of desperation (because they might be facing legal issues now), so I have to meet her in front of a store tonight, she will walk hours to get there. She doesn't trust the police, the last time she ran away she flagged down the police, told them the situation and basically said hey you don't have proof, there's not much we could do. I'd imagine that this distrust for the police is shared in these migrant-rich farming communities. I recently got a new job (in order to leave my own abusive relationship) and I will have to miss work to take her there, which I'm willing to do, I just want to make sure that we are going about this the right away. I also have two little kids at home (6 and 4 y.os) I am willing to pay for her ticket...I can make that money back. But gosh... I'm terrified. All these government offices are closed right now, since it's the weekend. I will make so many calls early tomorrow to make sure I know what my friend is getting herself into. Does anyone here have any advice? Tips? Anything that might be helpful.

My cousin is in the ICU and we don’t expect her to come out of this. My siblings and other cousins are trying to figure out what to do to help her and I have some general questions. We are located in Northern California.
For context, my cousin, Kathy, is 60 and has worked for a private insurance company for 27 years and she’s now an assistant manager. Her adult son passed away 2 weeks ago unexpectedly. Her mom and dad passed within 9 months of each other during Covid (3 years ago). Kathy was the heir and trustee to their house and money. Kathy does have a nephew, Chris, who is (maybe) 19 and away at college. Chris’s dad is incredibly shady and was married to Kathy’s sister (who also passed 10 years ago). We have not notified Chris or his dad about her being in the ICU yet.
Here are my questions in order of urgency
  1. If we tell her employer she is incapacitated are they legally obligated to maintain her medical insurance in California?
Her co worker is shielding it from other co workers because we don’t want them nosing around the hospital. But Kathy is in unpaid status and we need to keep her insurance going. We were going to pay it on her behal directly to the employer but now I’m thinking we need to notify her employer for her protection.
  1. How can we get a medical directive for her? She has no close family here except cousins who are all very close to her and know her wishes and want to protect her but we’re only cousins. I lost my mom this same way many years ago and say how the whole system worked and am concerned she doesn’t have a husband or son to make those decisions.

F28 with Ovarian Cancer I am really struggling with medical negligence not just from one doctor, but multiple. Just an FYI this is a long post about my overall experience since getting diagnosed with cancer and learning I have an underlying autoimmune disorder(s). I’ve been dealing with a lot of discrimination because I’m young and “healthy looking” and doctors constantly dismiss me or discriminate me for some reason and I’m tired of it. I’ve been sick and disabled since last November and I had a great job and was running my own business but lost everything because of negligent doctors and cancer.
I originally posted this on legaladvice because I thought maybe I had a case but at this point I don’t even know if I have a case or not and I’m starting to just accept that this is how this shitty system works. Anyways I thought I’d at least share my experiences with the medical field in the US specifically in LA California. I imagine I’m not the only person who has gone through this and that many people who are struggling with disabilities face these kind of obstacles when navigating the healthcare system here. I’ve had to learn how to advocate for myself and I only hope that my post and experience helps those struggling with their health.
In order for me to advocate for myself I’ve had to basically become just as knowledgeable about my condition(s) to get the proper care. I’ve had to fight for my diagnosis and proper treatment and had I not been looking up my symptoms, possible diagnosis, lab work results, I may have died or came to the verge of it had I fully trusted any of the doctors I’ve come into contact with. Always do your own research using trusted resources and have someone with you who can help advocate for you when you can’t advocate for yourself. Not only am I dismissed for being a female but also for being young and healthy looking despite having serious debilitating symptoms.
For two years I was seeing a rheumatologist for an underlying autoimmune disorder(s) like SLE OR MS and was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Primary immunodeficiency, dysautonomia, fibromyalgia, CIDP and still being investigated for more issues.
In November I decided to go on a LOA because my flares were starting to become more frequent and severe. My psychiatrist was the one who filled out the LOA paperwork for the time from Nov-Dec because I was hesitant to ask my Rheumatologist. I was told by my rheumatologists office that filling out LOA paperwork was $300 out of pocket and at the time I didn’t have that money so my psychiatrist signed it because I was also struggling with my mental health and family issues that time.
I was supposed to go back to work in January but at the start of the new year I got really sick and my flares started to ramp up again so I had to request a new LOA. My psychiatrist couldn’t help me with my LOA paperwork anymore because it was more health related now and told me to go see my rheumatologist. I was still hesitant because of the fee and then when I was about to see my rheumatologist again and get my bloodwork done I got a surprise bill from the lab where I get my bloodwork done for $400 after insurance. They wouldn’t let me get additional tests until I paid the fee and I couldn’t see my rheumatologist until I had my bloodwork done. I made an appointment with my rheumatologist anyways but the soonest I could get wasn’t until after the LOA deadline in March. I also couldn’t get any disability benefits until that LOA form was filled out by my doctor so I had no income to pay for any of this.
I ended up in the Emergency Room on 2/16/24 a little over a week before I needed to submit the forms for LOA and at this point my employer was threatening to fire me for failing to provide the LOA paperwork. I tried explaining the situation to one of my managers but he wasn’t having it and didn’t care.
When I went to the first emergency room I went in for multiple serious symptoms, they knew I had an underlying autoimmune disorder causing the flares and that I had surgery 3 years prior to remove ovarian cysts on my right ovary. I told the emergency room that I had a lot of abdominal pain across multiple areas, I was really weak, fatigued, dealing with vertigo, migraines, blood in stool, persistent bloating, frequent urination, appetite loss, rapid weight gain, insomnia, tachycardia, high bp, neuropathic itch/ polyneuropathy and my symptoms were to the point where I was losing my ability to walk. My partner was holding me the entire time so I wouldn’t fall.
The emergency room did a bunch of tests that included a basic blood panel, physical exam and a CT scan of my abdomen. They didn’t find the bleeding but instead found that I had a complex 14cm tumor on my right ovary which they deemed a dermoid cyst.
When they gave me the news they officially diagnosed me with a “dermoid cyst from birth” even though I countered their diagnosis and told them that was impossible because I had surgery 3 years prior. The doctor didn’t backtrack at all, just stuttered and continued to discharge me because it “wasn’t an emergency” just because I wasn’t bleeding out despite all of my serious progressing symptoms.
I angrily left the ER knowing it was utter BS and deep down I knew it was cancer because of how sick I was. I could literally feel I didn’t have much time but because I looked young and healthy and my basic blood panel didn’t throw up any huge red flags at them even they dismissed me and misdiagnosed me. I wasn’t even given anything to manage the pain.
I even told them I was already on a medical leave and that I’ve been really sick but that it was getting bad and I couldn’t see my rheumatologist. However I didn’t know about the tumor until then. I told them I needed help with the LOA paperwork too and had they admitted me I would have been able to get an extension and still have my job and benefits. I could have started treatment sooner and received disability pay but instead was forced to continue living with this pain. It was so large that I was at risk of torsion rupture and necrosis, Not to mention permanent nerve damage.
The next day I called up every gynecologist I could to see where I could go for the soonest appointment for an ultrasound. I found a doctor who took me as an emergency appointment a few days later and he confirmed it was most likely malignant and that I needed surgery ASAP. I talked to him about my LOA situation too because I was running out of time and I was too disabled to work. He also refused to help me sign my LOA paperwork because according to him, “ovarian cancer can’t cause systemic symptoms and you’re going to need to wait until surgery before I put you on leave”. I told him I had an underlying autoimmune disorder that I think is being exasperated by the cancer and I was just dismissed yet again despite needing someone to physically help me walk so I don’t fall. He also didn’t give me anything for the pain I was in.
I had to turn in my LOA that day but because of this I was forced to resign my position or face getting fired and becoming un-hirable so I had to quit. In quitting I lost everything, benefits, stocks, my job, my health, doctors. I’m now in debt with multiple cc going to collections because I haven’t been getting an income since January and I’m just starting chemo so I have no idea when I’ll be able to work again. I don’t know what to do here. I was going to try to settle my debt but with what money?? I might be forced into bankruptcy for 7 years now.
After I lost my insurance I applied for medi-cal but something with my application in there system wasn’t right and it was in a never ending pending limbo state(Took about two months to actually sort it out and I only sorted it out that quickly because my friend works for medi-cal). I tried waiting it out for two weeks, calling them sorting it out and doing it right by the system but every day I was getting sicker and weaker and I felt I was running out of time as I was bed ridden at this point.
Two weeks later I went to a different ER because at this point I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t eat and I started getting migraines after doing anything. I was miserable from enduring all the symptoms and never ending anxiety and mood swings of possibly having an autoimmune disorder like SLE, MS and ovarian cancer.
The second ER I went to finally admit me for emergency surgery after a full day of being in the emergency room and they confirmed it was in fact a tumor. It also grew to 20cm by that point. By this time the tumor had already ruptured and twisted my ovary. The entire time I was there though it was a battle. I had been living with this for so long that I was perceiving my pain as a 6 when in reality I had nerve damage and the pain was likely higher. I seemed calm at first but anytime someone came in trying to tell me I was fine I couldn’t hold it together and would start crying because I was at my breaking point. I was suffering and no one was taking me seriously. I had to make it a point that because of the misdiagnosis from the last hospital, I lost everything and was in a position where I couldn’t get any care because of the issue I was having with my medi-cal application. It would’ve been months before I found a PCP, got referred to specialists, confirmed it was cancer, and scheduled a surgery. At one point during my time in the emergency room, the head of the ER came to me and literally told me, “I want to help you but you’re going to have to SELL it to me”. After that I kept having to tell them that my pain was like an 8-10 and that the pain meds weren’t working. They put me on gabapentin which didn’t really do anything for me actually. But then they started giving me morphine and while it helped tremendously I also found out that day that I either have an allergy or a sensitivity to morphine.
Anyways now to my current situation. I started chemo about two weeks ago and my current oncologist is also being negligent.
I found out the other day that she blindly prescribed a medication for nausea that interacts with a medication that I was already on. The interaction is known to cause arrhythmias apparently. During my first week of chemo I was taking both meds and mentioned that my chest had been feeling heavy and I had pain. I was told it was steroids. It continued and then one night as I was falling asleep my heart started to pound really hard for about 10-15 seconds. I told my doctor about it and again steroids.
That same day I went to pick up a prescription and just happened to ask if anything interacted and that’s when I found out that it was a major interaction and I literally could have died had I not luckily already been titrating off of the offending medicine. I stopped taking those meds and immediately the chest pain stopped and I haven’t had an episode like that since.
I am freaked out and don’t want to continue my care with her due to her negligence. This should have been a conversation at minimum and she didn’t even tell me she prescribed it let alone double check for interactions(she had the list of my current medications). I just got a notification from my pharmacy that it was ready. I also didn’t know about the interaction when it was picked up because my mom picked it up for me and she doesn’t speak English very well.
I talked to my care teams assistant and told her I wanted a change of doctors because I didn’t trust her after this and she said she was going to put in the request. They called me yesterday though and said they weren’t going to switch me because I had already started treatment. They refused to switch my doctors despite everything that’s happened even though she literally almost accidentally killed me. I am livid and don’t want to continue with them but they’re giving me no choice but to continue seeing her.
I already set up an appointment for a second opinion but that’s not for another two weeks before the appointment and I don’t want to interrupt the treatment.
I have a rare type of ovarian cancer with a high grade tumor. It was a germ cell tumor called an immature teratoma. They said it is stage 1 but because I had emergency surgery, the tumor had already ruptured, and everything was rushed I don’t feel this is an accurate diagnosis because I have pain in all of the surrounding areas where the tumor was pushing up against. (I also mentioned this to my oncologist but instead of running tests or anything else I was given a psych referral for anxiety because I have an adhd & bipolar diagnosis even though I’ve been stable for years and I wasn’t overreacting in this case). The tumor was exasperating all of my autoimmune symptoms and causing me to be in a never ending flare so my body has been heavily damaged. Im becoming disabled at 28. I have so much anxiety with doctors now because I’m traumatized from my experience with them dismissing me and discriminating against me. Like I’m young so I “must be able to tolerate more”. I have to constantly look up my lab results, medications, conditions, because of how much negligence and dismissal I’ve been dealing with over the years. I’m scared I’m going to die from something preventable and not cancer at this rate.
TLDR: F28 w/ ovarian cancer and pre-existing autoimmune disorders struggling to get care, proper diagnosis, treatment, negligence by multiple doctors, losing everything. US health care system is incredibly difficult to navigate and we need to constantly advocate for ourselves to get proper care in this for profit healthcare system.

Hello all, long story short, my friend (she is from India and so are her captors/employers) is a victim of "forced labor" human trafficking. She has gone to hell and back in the last 7 years and has finally mustered the strength to leave, I am picking her up tonight at 10:30 p.m. and I am terrified... If you're interested in reading more details about her ordeal, read the long paragraphs below, but in short... my plan is to drive her up to the Indian Consulate in San Francisco, CA (she has recently talked to her sister in India who informed her that this is what she should do in order to go back to India, but what if she's wrong?) which is where she will get help and be on her way to India? Is this correct? I have never done this before and I am not sure what to do... The last thing I want to do is to drive my friend (who has zero money, an expired visa, no passport, speaks broken English, and is extremely vulnerable) to a place where she won't be helped and she has nowhere to turn to.
I met (let's call her Maria) Maria, about 2.5 years ago. We are both vendors at local Farmers markets here in Los Angeles, CA. From the MOMENT I met her, I knew something was very wrong. On my first day arriving at a specific farmers market, she and her boss were my next-booth neighbors. I asked Maria, "Hello, it's my first day here at this market, do you know if I can park at xy street or would I get a ticket??". She looked at me and immediately walked away. Her boss right away stepped up and said "Don't ask her, she wouldn't know, yes you can park at xy street". I thought well that's strange... why did she not let her talk... that girl looks scared. I had never seen such a tired and defeated looking human in my life. Most times her boss left her there to work while she went and worked other markets. Well I got to know maria and she became a very special friend of mine, she is caring, selfless and has all the good traits any good and decent human does. I don't know where to begin with describing what she's gone through. Her English is broken but I can understand 95% of what she tells me. I will try my best but I don't know every single detail.
She knows these people since when she lived back in India with her mom, dad, brothers, sisters. These suspects have businesses here in the U.S and over in India and employ both her father and uncles. They told Maria that they had an opportunity for her if she was interested. There was a man who was looking for a wife and they had told this man about Maria, he was interested. The plan was for Maria to travel to the U.S, marry this man, and employment with these suspects was guaranteed. Since her life was hard over there, she was intrigued and accepted. When she arrived they gave her the runaround...seems there was never a man for her to marry, instead they had her work endlessly on their business that is ran from a remote farming community here in Southern California. They threatened her by telling her they'd hurt her family back in India AND they'd lose their jobs, they'd hurt her, they'd do this, they'd do that. They have beaten her so many times, I've seen the bruises and begged her to let me take pictures that I would keep privately (but for proof if in the future they were needed) but every time I would ask, she'd always immediately refuse and said she'd have hell to pay if they found out. They have told her that she will never talk to her family back in India and she has not been able to do so since she left India.
They have her sleep inside a barn with the animals. They humiliate her, the husband and wife (and sister of wife) hit her so often and even broke her nose once. You can actually see where her nose healed crooked. There's been times where I did not see her for 2 or 3 weeks straight and sure enough, it was because she had some sort of injury she was healing (black eye, etc.). She has ran away several times only to go back several hours later because she has nowhere to go and is scared shitless. She basically works 24/7 too. She is not allowed to talk to anyone and when she and I are both at the same market (and her boss is dropping her off) we have to pretend to not know each other. Her boss picks her (and the equipment) up from the farmers market sometimes at 5-6 p.m. Mind you... all us other vendors have left at 2pm. So she just waits and waits to be picked up. She is not allowed to have ANY technology. She is not able to watch TV (she doesn't live inside a house anyway), when I was getting to know her... i realized she doesn't even know what is going on in the world (doesn't even know school shootings exist in this country). Her captors go through her things, they get extremely upset if vendor friends gift her items, (little pastries, gifts, etc. that they sell) or make conversation with her. For Christmas, my birthday, any holiday, she will go out of her way to give me a little gift (even if it's an insignificant little thing like a nail polish etc.) and she has given me her food when she knows I'm having a hard day and I'm upset (she knows I deal with an abusive husband and we bond over our difficult experiences) just to cheer me up. Little by little I have convinced her that she can trust me and that I would drive her to the airport and pay for her ticket, etc to get her back to India and escape from this abuse. I got her a cell phone that she only uses for internet that she has to keep hidden. Well with that cell phone and apps she was finally able to contact her family. She said that they said that they had not had jobs with these people for years and basically all the fear they put into her was B.S. They have for years been looking for her. She's still scared shitless but she says she cannot take it anymore. I have lost sleep over what my friend goes through. I don't know anyone who has suffered as much as she has. Again, what I described above is not all she has shared with me.. it's worse.
She doesn't want me to meet her at the ranch where she lives because she fears for my safety. She worries they will do something to me out of desperation (because they might be facing legal issues now), so I have to meet her in front of a store tonight, she will walk hours to get there. She doesn't trust the police, the last time she ran away she flagged down the police, told them the situation and basically said hey you don't have proof, there's not much we could do. I'd imagine that this distrust for the police is shared in these migrant-rich farming communities. I recently got a new job (in order to leave my own abusive relationship) and I will have to miss work to take her there, which I'm willing to do, I just want to make sure that we are going about this the right away. I also have two little kids at home (6 and 4 y.os) I am willing to pay for her ticket...I can make that money back. But gosh... I'm terrified. All these government offices are closed right now, since it's the weekend. I will make so many calls early tomorrow to make sure I know what my friend is getting herself into. Does anyone here have any advice? Tips? Anything that might be helpful.
I really hope she presses charges and these people pay for what they have done but I am discouraged by the fear I see in her. I can't blame her. I look forward to seeing their business crumble as they no longer have her endless help. Thanks for reading all this..

NOTE: Contains Spoilers for Fallout TV Show, also I havent watched the full series but I understand the plot of it.
So at the ending of the Last Episode we see Vegas, it's obviously in ruins, so, due to the fact we are going to be in Vegas in Season 2. What's the True Canon Ending? Let's go over each of the options from least likely to most likely.
Legion: I highly doubt the Legion won the battle for Hoover Dam. As in 3/4 of the endings you fight the Legion. And they would be more prominent in the Area because they were going to the west, as Lanius said he hopes to conquer California. So I don't think the Legion won, Lanius was probably spared, as I think most people spared him. If anything I like the idea that they were assimilated into the Brotherhood.
NCR: This one I doubt happened, as in the End Credits, we see a crashed Vertibird of the NCR, so I think most likely the NCR didn't win, but idk, just my Opinion.
Mr House: Thus one seems likely to most people and to me slightly. Idk what reason the Courier would have to betray his employer, but again Vegas is in ruins, his Securitron army would of stopped it, and I do like the tunnler theory, but I still think House would of been able to keep things under control. Also, just because he appears in a flashback, doesn't mean that he won in New Vegas.
Yes Man: This Ending, is what I believe to be the canon Ending. But more specifically, is the Securitron army is not activated, as Vegas would be in anarchy and Oliver said they would be back to get Vegas. So kinda makes sense for the Courier to take Vegas. Also people said that it makes Sense, as most of the DLCs in New Vegas talk about begining again, to let go of the past, and I agree. NCR - Pre War America, Legion - Roman Empire, Mr House - Pre War Vegas. The Courier could start something new. I think after Hoover Dam the NCR attacked and the Tunnlers arrived. The Courier left filled with shame and Vegas collapsed. Also House could still be Alive as you can just disable him, could he still be alive by the events of the show? No, he even says he will die, then again, it's fallout, stuff happen.
So let me know what you guys think? Please let me know. Please don't attack me, I tried my best.

As with most things, the opinions expressed in this post are my own. Consider this as just one data point, and not as a guide to your career.
I've been working in the Data/AI space for 5 years now and I've seen hundreds of starry eyed people wanting to work in A.I. because they want to work with the latest and coolest cutting edge technology. But I want to share with you a few reasons why A.I. is not a good career choice.
  1. A.I. positions could end up like the "data scientist" position. Looking at the history of the data scientist position, in 2010-2020, the hype around data science made it so that millions of people flocked to that position. Companies eventually realized that most them actually didn't need data science, and the impact of the position didn't always help them profit. The demand of the job has plummeted in recent years, leaving millions of aspiring data scientists unemployed or needing to pursue a different career.
  2. A.I. positions will be less than .0001% of tech engineering jobs. In the next few decades, the demand for software and data engineering roles will be much more needed at most companies that A.I. roles. Only a small group companies will a be pursuing A.I. initiatives, while the majority of companies will still need software and data engineers. But because 90% of tech news is A.I. related, there will be a massive influx of people trying to enter the space.
  3. The barriers to entry are huge. To pursue a career in A.I. and machine learning. A person's understanding of statistics and software engineering need to be extremely high. To get to that level of knowledge requires much more dedication and studying than most people imagine. Becoming a decent software engineer or data professional is already difficult for the average person.
Before you decide to pursue this as a career, it's important to consider some of the cons listed below. Perhaps consider taking a smaller step first and trying to land a job as a software engineer or data analyst. If you're already in a technical field, consider not putting all your eggs into one basket, and making sure you know enough skills to stay gainfully employed in the job market.

"In order to proceed with filing this unemployment claim, you will need to provide the code that will be sent to you by mail through the postal service."
So I just want clarification even though it's probably obvious --- --- they're going to snail mail me something and then I can input that to the online form??

I often hear moms leave their jobs to take care of their kids until they start going to school. Other than the bonding reasons, I am interested in the financial and career-related aspect of all that. So, I have some questions for those moms:
  1. Do you do this if your salary is almost the amount you would normally give for daycare, so you just decide not to work anymore because it doesn't make any sense to give out so much money? In this case, you would work just to pay for daycare.
  2. Do you quit working but make some sort of deal with your company for them to try to re-employ you again when you're done with being a stay-at-home mom?
  3. Are you afraid that you might lose the opportunity to find a good job again due to a gap in work history? How do recruiters look at this?
  4. Do you prefer to have more kids during that time or that they are more apart?
  5. What do you do regarding health insurance in you're unemployed and your husband cannot put you on his plan?
I would appreciate any valuable advice on financial pros/cons of being a stay-at-home mom.

2024.05.19 22:09 DecadesLaterKid Spouse stopped paying COBRA and we lost coverage. What are our options?

I need to stick to the facts here.
We're in the USA.
H and I have both been out of work for about a year. Health insurance was through his work (I was a contractofreelance).
After he was laid off, we paid for very expensive COBRA coverage for us and our kid, via his former employer.
Unbeknownst to me (he hid this/lied about it), he stopped paying COBRA premiums after February.
His former employethe insurance company permanently canceled our plan towards the end of April, but canceled it retroactively to February.
I discovered this in May (a week+ ago).
We could appeal, but it would take 30-45 days, it is outrageously expensive anyway-- $2500/month for 2 adults + 1 child-- and we are highly unlikely to win because we had a way to pay, it just wasn't utilized, by my husband's choice.
We apparently can qualify for Medicaid for our daughter (?), and also for us retroactively for March/April, but maybe not for the adults for May+, as I got a job at the end of April that will pay me/has started paying me $3-4k/month gross. ETA: This is a full-time job through at least December, but am being paid as a contractor, so no benefits from my new job. I may be confused, but this income may be too much to qualify for May on. Husband has no income, in fact has earned almost nothing in the past year of unemployment (I earned some prior to late April, though not enough). He did earn some money in April that was paid in May ($3k), but has nothing else lined up.
It looks like we can't apply for Obamacare (until Nov 1?) because failing to pay COBRA premiums is not a "qualifying event." And he lost employment more than a year ago.
What can I do?
I've been struggling to wrap my mind around this because I am still reeling from yet another betrayal on his part, having to begin looking into divorce mediation again, and trying to keep my new job.

Hello fellow social workers. I'm a second year MSW student and I just got accepted at an internship at a big hospital. It's a very coveted internship with a lot of competition and I'm lucky I got it. I am terrified I am going to lose this coveted internship and below I will explain why. I know I'm overthinking this but it's hard not to in this circumstance.
About 6 7 years ago, I left a relationship with a man that was extremely abusive and controlling, was addicted to gambling and substances. At one point in our relationship because of his spending we became homeless. He took me with him on several occasions to the grocery store to seal food and hygiene items. I would get arrested with him because I was with him, but then I had the charges against me dismissed. I think there are three or four maybe more that have been dismissed. Obviously this was a very horrible period in my life and ever since I left him my life has improved dramatically, I've surrounded myself with positive people, and I have excellent references from working with vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and also a previous career in finances where I never breeched anybody's trust. I have also spent time giving back to the homeless by handing out food at the la mission on skid row. I also do tons of animal rescue. Just in case, I am compiling letters of reference from my current & former employers. Under California law, any charges that have been dismissed should not be disclosed. I am about to do a Live Scan soon and I'm wondering if I should say something beforehand and just explain the situation and that it was dismissed or like I have been told by many, don't say anything and then wait if they question me. I am terrified I am going to lose this position that I worked so hard to get because of a dismissed/expunged misdemeanor record.
Please let me know your thoughts if you work in a hospital or hiring. I want to be fully honest with them I just don't know if I should tell them beforehand even though professors and a lawyer I consulted with have all advised me not to say anything because charges were dismissed. Help please advise.

So I’ve been in a bit of a rough spot. Post covid I moved back in with my parents because here in Canada the cost of renting is absurdly high and as a new university graduate working for minimum wage I couldn’t support myself.
Since I’ve moved back though things have not been great. The job market here is pretty poor. I’ve gone through four jobs where the pay was horrible and the employment was unstable punctuated by long periods of unemployment. Last week I was laid off again.
I’m feeling that there isn’t much future here for me. So how do I escape? All the decent jobs seem to be in the big cities that I fled because it wasn’t financially viable to live there. I haven’t got the slightest clue how to look for work abroad. I don’t have enough money save up to just up and move.
So people who escaped their home towns, what steps did you take to get out of there?

I'm trying to help a former co-worker who's applying for new jobs and was recently asked on an application if they had ever been involuntarily terminated and, if so, to explain the situation. Co-worker was terminated from our organization a little while ago.
It recently came to light that the reasons behind my co-worker's termination were largely false. For example, the manager stated that the co-worker was hours late to work, causing the department to fail to be punctual with a delivery at agreed upon time with another organization. The co-worker was on vacation on the date provided by the manager and was not involved with the agreement with the other organization in any way. The delivery to the other organization was also on time and didn't even happen in the same month the manager stated it occurred.
We had a few projects given to us by our employer that we were all working on. The manager gave our co-worker a new deadline, weeks ahead of the deadline the rest of the employees were given. However, the manager didn't inform the co-worker of that personal deadline until the day had passed, sending an email at around 8 pm that day. One of the reasons given for my co-worker's termination was failing to meet that new deadline that co-worker didn't even know about. There was no way my co-worker could have reasonably expected our manager would have wanted the work done that day and it wasn't even something co-worker could have completed that day due to information missing from our manager. An email was falsified to make it appear that co-worker knew of this new deadline at the beginning of the day. Incidentally, the co-worker completed the work the next day, weeks ahead of the organization's actual deadline, and before several other members of the department had completed it.
The co-worker has been honest about actual mistakes, like warning the manager ahead of time that they would be 10 minutes late one day, which was done according to company policy. This 10 minute tardiness didn't affect work, but this has been held against the co-worker. The manager was never present and would not have known had co-worker not informed them. Co-worker was generally 20-30 minutes early to work and regularly worked unpaid overtime in order to meet the manager's assigned workload.
There was an unemployment appeal by our employer, but my co-worker won based on the evidence presented.
The manager has unexpectedly left the organization shortly after the unemployment appeal verdict was released, presumably involuntarily.
I realize people can be terminated for whatever reason, but this manager really had it out for the co-worker and would hold them to different standards than everyone else. My co-worker was one of the favorite employees both in their department and among clients, and one of the hardest working people.
We don't believe the HR department would be honest about the circumstances behind the co-worker's departure based on how they spoke of the co-worker in the unemployment appeal.
Is it at all possible to put down an explanation on the job application that sort of conveys the nature of the termination without appearing petty or dishonest? Can the co-worker state something along the lines of the manager falsifying some information or having unattainable expectations to result in the termination and offer to provide evidence if requested? The HR department really focused on that one day where co-worker was 10 minutes late as being a justifiable reason. That event really did occur - how should something like that be explained?

Okay naman sana dahil WFH kami and once a week lang ang RTO. Kaya lang ramdam ko na yung wala ng growth sa trabaho ko, wala ngang growth, wala pang increase sa sahod this year unless ma-promote ako. Everyday tinatamad na ako and laging ina-anxiety dahil kapag may pinapagawa sa akin hindi ko naman alam kung paano gawin, kailangan magpaturo ako lagi and hindi naman nagkukusa lead ko na turuan ako, ako pa mangungulit na turuan niya ako.
Gusto ko na makapag-ipon kaya lang almost wala ng natitira sa sahod ko, sakto lang sa bills and allowance.
Kaya hindi ako makaalis din ngayon sa work ko dahil: - Parang walang employer na willing tumanggap sa mga skills na natutunan ko sa current company ko. Career shifter kasi ako from QA sa manufacturing to IT. Though nag-aaral naman ako ng courses online na pangdagdag sa CV ko. - Walang ipon pa masyado.
Nag-aapply apply na rin ako online everyday pero puro viewed lang ng mga employer, minsan unlikely to progress pa yung application. Nakaka-putangina rin kasi mga qualifications ng karamihan sa mga employer, merong entry level daw pero napaka-haba ng listahan ng qualifications.
Parang gusto ko lang muna magpahinga and mag-aral ng courses na makakadagdag sa skills ko. Though may work naman si jowa, though mej nahiya rin ako kahit tinulungan ko rin siya nung mga time na unemployed siya para makapag-abroad. Haha.
Hopefully makaalis na ako sa company ko ngayon and makahanap ng bagong work na mas malaki sahod and mas marami akong matututunan.
Feel ko ang malas ko sa career, buti na lang blessed ako na mababait mga nagiging kasama ko sa trabaho, yung sahod at trabaho at management lang talaga 'yung panget.
Minsan naiisip ko mag-business na lang ng silog dito sa bahay na mag-ooperate sa gabi tapos papangalanan kong Tipsylog. Hahaha.
