Help Mr Pinto!!

Help Mr Pinto!!
I’ve had him for about a year, I’ve kept bettas for six-ish years now and cured lots of fin rot and ailments for my past fish friends. I’m stumped on what to do for my current betta. -He’s been sick for four weeks now. -1st week I put him in a “hospital tank” with kanaplex and daily water changes because he had suddenly been very lethargic and his tail fin was just gone. Some other fins a little red. (I’m still not sure if it was a fake log I had in there or he had been biting his fins. He had very long fins before) -2nd week I had added aquarium salt to the mix and he was eating normally and started to get back to normal. - I cleaned his tank and removed a lot of decor and washed everything. Put him back in there and have been doing water changes every other day. He was eating and almost back to normal - the past few days he’s just been laying on his side. That’s all he does. If I come spook him he swims up and around really fast and then just lays wherever he lands kinda? His fins had the red dots back again and as of today he’s not interested in food. I’ve been doing water changes and back on kanaplex and aquarium salt but I’m not sure what to do from here. - leaving pics of him before & now. I’ve never had a fish with dropsy so i don’t know if im just being paranoid but his scales look ever so slightly raised? I’d love an opinion on this and any medication recommendations. I’ve only really dealt with bacterial stuff and fin rot? Usually kanaplex is all I needed.
(He’s Always progressively gotten darker but he is extra dark lately ?)

2024.05.20 01:19 Independent_Humor_74 Kids newspaper with reptile character

I was in elementary school in the 2010s and when I was in 1st or 2nd grade through 3rd or 4th grade, each month, our teachers would give us a newspaper that featured a green reptile character with a cap on. I do remember the newspaper having a calendar and mentioned places like Inflatable Wonderland and University Hospital. I also wonder if it was an NISD thing, since I knew someone who also attended an NISD school with the same newspaper. I’ve been in a nostalgia kick lately trying to find the name of the newspaper and if they still make them. And it’s been bothering for a while now, so I do hope some of you know what I’m talking about.

2024.05.20 01:07 KingdumbHearts Is my little girl autistic?

she's a little over four years old. I'm starting to suspect that she may be autistic? probably high-functioning, though, because she isn't developmentally delayed or anything. she began walking at 13mo which isn't late and said her first word early, at 9mo.
some things that I think are unusual: • limited facial expression • not particularly poor eye contact, but much less than other kids, especially when she is paying attention to something else. she will not look at me when I say her name, but she answers by talking.
• she lines things up like bears, she will also only paint dots in straight lines. • only plays games in one way - she plays this game where she is 'walking to school' and finds a cat, she will do this several times over around the room. - she lines up bricks and lays on them every single time, not really playing with them. She is also preoccupied with the sound of these bricks hitting each other. At home, she will always tell me about that sound.
• she obsesses over little things that characters on TV do. - on a show, she once saw a boy pack his bag to go hang out with his friends. afterwards she completely forgot what the boy actually did, she just cared about the toy robot he brought with him. for days after, she would build the same robot out of Duplos and pretend to pack her bag as well. she also kept replaying that part of the episode without watching the rest.
• she repeatedly watches a select few Lego videos on YouTube because she likes the sound. she also loves the sound of shoes on wood, and will happily run around the house making that sound.
• she has a meltdown whenever we go to parties or turn on the vacuum. She starts screaming and crying and won't stop till I take her somewhere quiet. This has been happening since she was a few months old. It's strange because other than that, she is a very timid and quiet child.
• every night, I see her moving her fingers strangely over her eyes like puppets. her teachers see the same behavior during naps.
• whenever she sees her younger brother sitting down, she pushes him over on his face. she laughs whenever she does this. but she's generally not mean or anything?
• she seems overwhelmed in bright areas. constantly squinting, talking less. she also falls asleep very quickly after i take her somewhere less bright, like she's tired from all the stimulation or something?
• she has trouble following instructions or picking up a new skill without repeatedly seeing someone else do it. once someone shows her what to do, she learns very quickly, however.
• she is obsessed with this one book about rain. she has read it hundreds of times, but refuses to throw it away or anything. It's in pretty bad shape, but she refuses to leave it alone.
• she is strangely attached to her stuffed dog, creatively named "puppy". she takes it to school every day and sleeps with it every night. if she loses it, she refuses to sleep without it. once, her older sister cut a hole into it. the stuffing was coming out, but she still continued to bring it around everywhere.
• she is obsessed with metal locks. she draws them, she carries them around. she also really likes over-ear headphones. these are in almost all of the cards she makes for me.
• she doesn't react much to pain. she runs, she falls, she scrapes her knee or something, then she gets back up like nothing happened. she skinned her hand once pretty badly and barely cried. she
• her teachers have told me that she is very quiet at school. she doesn't play with other kids unless prompted to.
• she is very controlling of her younger brother, like she's trying to be a second mother.
• she is strangely fascinated with checklists and schedules. I can't even tell you how many times I stumble upon a paper that says "daily routine" or "scedhul" (she can't spell that word yet.) with a checklist underneath. this is really strange for a 4 year old, but it would make a little sense if she was autistic? I know many kids with autism care a lot about routines.
that's pretty much everything. does my little one seem autistic? my other kiddos don't act like this at all.

2024.05.20 01:01 OddlyMid My (49M) brilliant but ASD/PTSD ex (47F) is now totally fine and happy and I think I’m traumatized

I apologize for the sheer wall of text but maybe this will be good cathartic Sunday reading? It helps a lot to write it out. I am a 49M widower, three years out of losing my wife (48F), father of three adult kids. Last year I felt I was ready to find love again, and joined a dating app. Very quickly I matched with Lexi (47F, not her real name) and was smitten right away.
I am in the tech and startup space in my city and she had just moved from the opposite coast with a tech background and two exits. In fact, she swiped on me because we had just connected by email two weeks earlier because she was looking to join the startup scene in her new home.
She was so accomplished and warm and smart. She was into Buddhism and spoke much of the language of my childhood in terms of peace and joy. We had so much in common. We quickly talked about cofounding a startup, I loved her own dreams for the future, she was supportive of mine. We were honest and vulnerable and despite feeling utterly naive and awkward it felt great.
It was also complicated. She had been married twice before, the most recent physically abusive and prompting her cross-country escape with her two sons. She was self-aware enough to know she was dealing with the trauma and I was wholeheartedly supportive. Practical things like helping her finish all the paperwork for her divorce or keeping a distance so as not to upset her kids made sense.
But over time and sometimes with great pain we would run into triggers and need to break and reset. Our attempts to do something together were too hard because she would fear losing control—which made sense. She was terrified of not having support in a new city and I made sure to be available to her as much as possible—down to reserving certain hours every day to be with her. She asked me to move into her building, then panicked because her sons might see me, so I moved into the building next door.
I loved her so much and wanted to do everything to keep her happy or at least feeling safe. Maybe my years as a caretaker to my late wife conditioned me in this way. But Lexi and I knew we both were in complex places in our lives and tried hard to navigate things. She read about dating a widower, I read about PTSD and ASD—something she felt explained a lot going back to childhood, from sensory sensitivity to difficulty reading nuance in social situations. As an awkward guy myself, I was empathetic.
We co-developed a shared document that basically helped us avoid landmines. When our daily time together would be. Where to park so she wouldn’t notice if I wasn’t home. Boundaries to protect her kids—which did feel like we were sneaking around and would fill her with guilt. She loved to cook and had specific dietary preferences and I adopted the same diet (and still stick to it, mostly, because it did improve my health). She said she felt safer the more of my face she could see, so I changed my glasses and shaved my facial hair. She was afraid of getting pregnant so I got my long-planned vasectomy.
And this all sound crazy, but I was happy to do it, and she seemed to be trying hard, too. She adopted ASD coping strategies, we put reminders around our respective homes, she even put my photo on her wall as part of a ranked list of priorities… though I think I came after her boys and her dogs. (I’m a cat person but loved her dogs, dogsat her dogs, and the regular walks were a main way we spent time together, even when things were rocky.) More articles and books, personality tests, studying results to find paths forward. She had a science background so did find some comfort in analyzing us.
The biggest trigger was that I would sometimes travel out of town. I work remotely so it wasn’t hard to just stay put. But before we met I’d planned to go to a big concert in LA with my daughter, and couldn’t not go. That one weekend trip was the biggest hurdle we faced. I even paid for therapy for her and kept my promise to keep in constant touch—but it caused a two-week break, and a lot of anguish thereafter. She felt abandoned even as I showed in every way that I was committed. A couple of times she had panic attacks and curled into a ball while we were out and about. Once she ran from me, genuinely afraid of me, when I had gotten frustrated and made a sarcastic remark.
Because of her past abuse, the physical side of our relationship was also tricky. There were rules here, too, but as a middle-age effective virgin, I was still into it. I’d only had one serious partner in my life, so everything was new and amazing… but for it to also be a hot-cold-voracious-guilt rollercoaster was… confusing. A few times I would be strong enough to say, “If this is too hard, we could just be friends.” But THAT was, as you might imagine, another huge threat to her sense of safety.
Until she concluded the same. We pledged—via email, because by then even text messages were too intense for her—to be good, single friends. Walks, hikes, movies. Love you always. Then no contact for four months. She mailed my keys back to me.
Of course, I still lived next door, and ran into her maybe four times during that span. She seemed stricken a couple of times, and would not speak, not really look up, and twice crossed the street to avoid me. Her dogs were happy to see me, which made it especially awkward. I tell you, I felt like the worst person on earth, a man who failed to be a good partner and caretaker when I thought that was a strength. I was worried that I made her PTSD worse, that she was a wreck…
Until three weeks ago, our anniversary. She said she was sorry for causing me pain and wanted to be friends. I could have fainted dead. We met up for lunch.
She was glowing. She was so happy. Her sons were now both adults and she decided they were going to be just fine, and feeling liberated. She wasn’t ASD, it was just PTSD. She had started a graduate program to become a therapist (something we discussed), happy to both be able to tap her experiences to help others and to have the chance to practice with herself and classmates. She turned her love of cooking into selling her stuff at a local market (something we discussed). gave up her diet because it made it hard to date. And she’d been dating. And had a boyfriend who was taking her out of town for a week. I immediately saw the brilliant woman I first met, and was frankly gutted. I was happy she was happy, I was crushed that she got where she is AFTER me, not WITH me.
My friends tell me she was genuinely troubled and that PTSD doesn’t just vanish in a few months. That she was wearing a mask with me, and that this new boyfriend—with whom she also has amazing commonalities—is getting the same “mimic” behavior. That, if anything, her wanting to reconnect means she’s looking to assuage guilt or regain a part of her still critical support system. That I turned myself inside out for her, and the most important question to ask myself is whether I should be as open to being friends as I am.
I made a lot of changes in my life for her, many positive, many that still persist. I feel like it would be a waste to go through what we did and NOT be friends. But I definitely went through the wringer and I feel like I’m now the one recovering from trauma. I believe in therapy and am going to work on this. But I’d value an objective take.
TDLR; First relationship as a widower was to an amazing but complex woman was very fraught and fell apart. After no contact for four months she asked to meet up, and she was glowing and normal and I’m shook. Was it bad timing and I missed my chance, or is she maybe not really okay? And can we still be friends?

2024.05.20 00:50 throwawaysrs2017 In the process of fixing my ED

Hello, i’m making this post and will update it accordingly to share, so others have another resource to read/look into, and maybe feel hopeful about their situation. This will probably be a lengthy post so i apologize in advance.
For some background, i’m a 23 year old male, slightly chubby/thicker, i’ve been competing in powerlifting and doing strength training since i was about 15, and very recently, started experiencing some ED with my partner.
So far it’s happened twice with me. The first time I had figured i was just tired in the moment, i had already taken my melatonin for the night and was half asleep when we decided to have sex. I went soft when the intercourse started. That night i had written it off as me just being tired and ready for bed. The second time, i was a little more embarrassed. There’s not much to it other than that - we initiated sex, and i again - went soft during intercourse. And i felt awful about it.
it’s been about a week, since the second occurrence happened, since then ive started taking my ashwagandha and magnesium taurate again, and last night i decided to throw some zinc into the mix. I also started drinking an 8oz mixture of organic beet juice and pomegranate juice, daily. I’ve also cut out ALL porn and masturbation, there will be more on this later. I have a HUGE history with porn and masturbation.
Since i started taking my supplements again, some mornings i have morning wood, other times, i don’t. im doing a very good job at not letting this deter my effort or wipe out my hope. this all takes time i’m sure.
I firmly believe porn is my culprit. I discovered porn back in the 1st grade. fast forward to 3rd grade, i learned how to masturbate. jump over to 7th grade and all through highschool, im doing it daily, a few times a day. And it only got worse as i got older, even after graduated highschool. So i’m led to believe that my habits are starting to catch up to me!
In recent years, i’ve had a habit of bookmarking porn videos to my pc, saving NSFW reddit posts, and eventually just casually watching it while i’m gaming. i’ll look at it in the gym parking lot while i wait for my caffeine to kick in, i’ll look at twitter porn while i drive home, or on my breaks at work. It had gotten waaaaay too casual for me. I’d be in discord with my friends playing games, if i died in whatever game, i’d load up google chrome and just browse a site, looking for a video that looked nice. All while touching myself too, not straight up beating it but just rubbing the head of my penis, and basically edging myself.
Recently, when my current girlfriend and i started seeing eachother, i remember i was erect almost ALL the time when we cuddled or kissed and got slightly intimate. And i think a huge reason for that is - when we had first started seeing eachother, i was always at her house, i wasn’t at home on my PC looking at porn, i wasn’t on my phone looking at porn, i wasn’t being stimulated by anything, AND i was also taking my ashwagandha + magnesium. At the time, i was taking ashwagandha an effort to reduce stress and have a clearer head. i was doing some testing for a job so i looked into ashwagandha and started taking it, turns out my mom already had some in the house and just gave me the magnesium to take with it. But i remember being fully erect ALL the time.
At some point, i had fallen off of the ashwagandha and magnesium, not for any specific reason. I would sleep at my girlfriends house and go straight to work in the morning, so i wasn’t stopping by my house to get my supplements. on top of that, as our schedules got busier and i had more time to myself at home, i would find myself playing video games, while browsing porn and touching myself. i had fallen back into that nasty habit, that i essentially had unknowingly dropped for a little bit.
So this is where i’m at now. ashwagandha, magnesium, and zinc daily. Plus beet juice and pomegranate juice, and no porn.
My break at work is coming to an end so i’m closing this out for now, i’ll edit and add more when i’m home, as well as answer any questions, if there are any! thanks for reading and good luck!

2024.05.20 00:47 Ok-Comedian-4571 What I learned from a 72-hour power outage

So darling girl (we'll call her Amy) had a taste of life when SHTF this week after the power was cut off to our rural cabin for 3 days straight.
Sadly, I'm more of an armchair prepper than a hands-on guy, plus I was away on business so wasn't much help. Lack of electricity also meant the electric pump to our artesian well didn't run so Amy had no power AND no running water.
Most of the lessons we've learned will be pretty obvious to you guys as experienced Preppers but I wanted to share what I've learned so you can show this to anyone who says that prepping is only for the paranoid.
I'm also immensely indebted to the TheSensiblePrepper for his awesome 'Power Out Kit List'. You saved our lives, man!
Check your UPS
Living out in the country we're used to temporary power cuts, so I use a laptop with a UPS for work. We also have a Starlink satellite dish for internet. When the power first went down I suggested to Amy that she plug the Starlink router into the UPS to get online, only to find it needed way more juice (1000 VA) than my budget UPS could supply. Naturally I'd have known this if I'd troubled to test the UPS myself with the Starlink system.
Power Banks : Go Big or Go Home
TheSensiblePrepper's recommended Golabs R300 Power Station couldn't be delivered to our cabin, so we went with a Jackery 1000 with a 200W Solar Panel. This is a classic case in point for why prepping is so important as we had to arrange daily deliveries of mini battery packs for Amy's cellphone each day from a local grocery store just so she could charge her cellphone.
Lay in your Logs
It's great having a log fire as we do. We even have a ton of logs out in the shed. Still Amy's health problems prevented her from fetching them to keep the place warm. Naturally I felt terrible as I was thousands of miles away and couldn't do it for her. Lesson learned: If you're going away and your family have mobility issues, make sure they have everything they need to hand!
Network with Neighbors
Some kind neighbors did invite Amy over a meal, shower and to charge her cellphone the first night of the power cut. Still, Amy didn't feel right about asking for more help as she didn't know them well. If we'd taken the time to visit with the neighbors and maybe help out with a few chores we'd have a much better support network around us. Needless to say, we're going to do that in future!
Water Worries
The lack of running water was a huge obstacle for Amy - the poor girl went without a shower for 3 days! The aforementioned kindly neighbors dropped off a few bottles for drinking and some 'gray' water to flush the toilets.
Still, I've since been researching solar pumps for the artesian well which include a backup battery. It's going to be costly to replace the pump altogether but it's better that than be stuck without water.
Currently I'm leaning towards TheSensiblePrepper's suggestion of laying in some stackable water bricks.
Grab some Gas
Although our house is plumbed for gas, it's only used for heating. In a SHTF scenario, it's also unlikely they'll keep pumping. Amazon came to the rescue here once again with the Grill Boss Portable Propane Stove.
I've no idea if this is the best value for money or most efficient stove out there. I do know in future Amy won't have to eat cold beans out of a tin, even if the gas/power goes down.
__
As I said, I'm sure this will seem very obvious to experienced users but if we'd followed the steps in this subreddit sooner, we'd have had a much easier time of it. Perhaps something to share with non-preppers next time they say you worry too much. :-)

2024.05.20 00:35 big-mf-deal Extreme RSD after not getting my dream job offer

I’m a new teacher looking for my first job. I was offered a 6th grade position and a 4th grade position at meh schools. I asked both schools to give me until Friday to make a decision. Friday, while I was working in my long-term position, my school principal pulled me in her office to let me know there was a rare opening at another elementary school in the district. This school is wonderful and has a great reputation. Plus, the job was 2nd grade, my favorite. We rearranged the entire day - I had to have someone else cover my class so I could go to the interview, I missed lunch entirely, and I was actively interviewed for over an hour by the principal, assistant, and 5 grade-level teachers. It went really well and I was so excited! The principal understood that I needed an answer that day but asked me to wait until 4:00 because he had another interview at 3. When I left, I knew I had the job. I was so excited and everyone was so happy for me to possibly stay in the current district.
He called right at 4 and was so nice, but told me they went with the other candidate. It came down to experience and the other candidate had a lot more. While I understand that, I just can’t accept it and keep asking myself why they went to all the trouble of interviewing me if they knew they didn’t want a first year teacher. I’ve been crushed all weekend. I’m talking extreme depression, unable to leave bed, crying spells, recurrent intrusive thoughts, negative self-talk, all of the things. I know a lot of it is due to where I am in my cycle, but I’m really struggling. Idk what I want from this post, just wanted to get it out I guess.

2024.05.20 00:27 CollectingChicken CAD check engagement ring. First time buying ring.

CAD check engagement ring. First time buying ring.
Hi community,
I am planning to ask my girlfriend to marry me soon and did some research in engagement rings. As we have a tight budget, I ended up deciding to go for a 10k white gold moissanite ring. First of all, thank you all for this subreddit as it has already helped me a lot! :).
I received my 2nd CAD from Provence after adjusting the prong type. Could you help me check the CAD? It's my first time buying a ring and it's supposed to be a surprise for my girlfriend. I am especially curious about the following:
1- The 'bottom' under the stones are open. What benefits does this have? Will that be comfortable enough? Is it uglier if I decide to close the bottom? 2- The band narrows to ~1.8mm towards the top. Is it safe enough to keep it like this? I have been told it's more beautiful this way. 3- Do you see any other weak points for the band or stones? 4- The prongs will get tightened when the ring is made. Will they protect the stones enough and do you think the type of prongs suit this ring? 5- I opted for a low profile ring, as I know my girlfriend would love to wear the ring daily, also while she is being a bit active. Is it too low or does it match the average low profile ring? 6- Any other things I have to pay attention to?
Thank you guys a lot in advance! Also, feel free to give your opinions about the ring! :).

2024.05.20 00:26 0-64-72_woobbley I kinda feel lost

I think I just need a place to rant about my life that isnt my family, I dont really have anyone in person to talk with and I dont really want to bother anyone.
I guess I should start at the beginning, when I was in elementary school my family and I were broke af, like more than I realized at the time. I knew that we didn't have much money and that my dad didn't want to tell me what our actual financial situation was, but I knew it wasn't good. looking in from outside it seemed like I had it all, and it still does...
I should mention, my dad was working full time, with overnight but it didn't pay well enough to sustain a family of 4. he had to quit due to health reasons, the job was literally killing off their employees (that's not an exaggeration), from my current understanding and from what I remember, they had to take these biological shots (I don't know why) and people stopped showing up to work over time. according to the info I got back then, they all died due to some reason like "heart attack" or "organ failure". It was in accordance with the gov and whatnot. So it's either leave or die, my dad's health was declining hard because of this. He had to take up learning health and related things on his own, he's alive and well now.
At the beginning of 7th grade, I somehow got the newest iPhone at the time, the iPhone 7Plus, I was super excited because that was my first smartphone, I kept it all the way till 2020, I still love that phone and the memories that I made with it. Anyway, it was the coolest thing at the time, it wasn't till later that I found out that it was my uncle that paid for it. Life seemed... fine, I was having fun. Nearing the end of 7th grade we had to sell the house, we rented another one close to my school at the time so that I could finish elementary school there.
Everything seemed great till the end of 8th grade, we couldn't stay there anymore since (I believe) we were behind on rent. So we had to move out, luckily enough we have some relatives that we could fall back on but they were a few town/cities over (~230kms), I was trying to do my best to stay positive, in all honesty I don't know if it worked.
Some time after we settled in, we managed to find a stable source of income but there's no paper trail. (we didn't think it was at the time). Now we have the financial freedom to buy whatever and to whatever (within reason obviously)
  1. "Friends"
After leaving my home town, I only stayed in contact with a couple of friends till a couple years ago (2022). one of my childhood friend's who I thought as a "best friend" couldn't be more wrong, he said he didn't want to be friends anymore, which was weird because we went through thick and thin together, we did everything together, you could've mistake us for brothers. He ghosted me for a whole month, I called up a mutual friend to ask about him and put us in a 3-way call, that's when he said "I don't think we should be friends anymore". That's when I truly realized that I was alone, although I did make some "friends" in high school. I know that I'll never have anything as close to that friendship ever again, there isn't some 2nd chance to get a childhood friend.
I went to high school in the new city with my cousin, that was my only saving grace. We were pretty close and still are. At the very least I met a couple people that have become good friends even after graduation.
I remember clear as day, 2 of my close "best friends" in 8th grade promised each other that we would get manual cars as our first cars, so far from that I scraped from social media and what I last heard about them, I'm the only one that went through with it. Not that a promise meant much to me, it never had.
Actually if you're reading this, what does a promise mean to you? I know doctors are not allowed to promise anything, so that tells me it's supposed to be impactful. I guess I have a life full of broken promises.
  1. Relationships
After grad in elementary school I got into my first relationship thanks to my school's "bully" (he wasn't really targeting anyone, just picks on everyone (except in his friend group)) at least he knows and acknowledges it according to his instagram/snapchat story (years later).
One day in 8th grade, he just straight up tells this girl that I like her while walking past a doorway (which I didn't, I was interested in another girl but we had went our separate ways already) I was right behind him... after graduation, it gets a bit blurry but we got into a relationship because I didn't have the heart to say no (this haunts me later on), she broke up with me because of "long distance" but a short couple years later she told me that it was all a facade, she just wanted to know what it was like to be in a relationship, not that she had any interest in me. I- am still conflicted about it.
In freshman year of high school, I got asked out by a guy who was a year older, we were in the same club, I didn't have the heart to say no so I was in that for less than half a month, I still don't know how to feel about it.
Not too long after I asked a girl out (also a year older) and they said yes! Confidence boost +1. they wanted to identified as non-binary. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows though, the longer I was in that relationship, the more I learned about this person, the sooner I wanted to give up, disappear, they weren't the right one, they were nice but had some issues that I wasn't ready to deal with at the time. they kept talking about their ex, being abusive and such. after leaving that relationship I heard something that they said about that was similar to what they said about their ex, so what they said about their ex was a possible lie as well. good thing I left when I did.
  1. Life
We are pretty well off now, still living with aforementioned relatives.
I got my first car halfway through grade 11, I wouldn't ask for any other car, its the manual version of my mom's car, she got that car when I was born so there is quite a bit of sentimental value to it even though I had just got it.
For this next part I swear I'm not trying to flex or anything, around 2021 I bought the newest macbook, ipad, iphone, etc. (my old ones either didn't work or didn't have) a fresh start.
but now I feel somewhat depressed, I don't think I have depression but at the same time I think I might. It's just lonely, Covid19 did not help. Whenever I think about it my heart aches, now I'm lost, I feel alone, I don't know what to do, I'm scared.
Somehow this is the only place I can turn to. The uncertainty of the future is truly scary.
I don't really say it in real life but, I'm sorry, for it being this long, for taking up space. I don't think anyone is actually going to read all this, but if you did, thank you, and I'm sorry for wasting your time.

2024.05.20 00:23 hoshiko_v_ I dont know why i get jealous

So, I know this girl that goes to the same grade as me. She is quite nice and all, and i tried befriending her when she was a new student at my school. The thing is that, she sometimes annoys me, like a lot. I dont really like people who dont have a strong opinion on things that are subjects were you should have one. People can have different opinions but staying neutral is something that annoys me. She is the type of person to alwaysbbe neutral.
I had this situation were i had a fight with my friend group and after that she started to grew closer to them and she befriended the person that i was friends with before. Than, she joined one of my school clubs and got better at than me, which put me in a shadow and make coordinators acknowledge me less. Then when i mentioned the fact that i started to have a better relation with one of our coordinators, she started texting him non stop and had the best contact ever with him. Now i introduced her to one of my guy friends and for the last month they cant stop mentioning each other, texting non stop and just spending a lot of time together.
i kind of feel like im a third wheel in this situation and also feel jealous that she "steals the spot" which she isnt really doing but i just feel so. how should i deal with this feeling so that it wont interfere in my daily life and communicating with her ?

2024.05.20 00:18 HenryOrlando2021 Meibomian Gland Dysfunction Grading Systems…An Introduction

On this sub and the DryEyes sub one often reads someone posting they have been told by an eye doctor that they have mild, medium or severe MGD. The whole business of having a stage system or grading scale for MGD is very complex. It can be subjective, objective or a combination of both. It also can include the judgment of a Meibography tool. Indeed Meibography images can be read like an X-ray or MRI so we will have artificial intelligence reading them as they do now for X-rays or MRI.
Just give a look at the images on these studies to get a sense of the complexity:
Grading and baseline characteristics of Meibomian glands in Meibography images and their clinical associations in the Dry Eye Assessment and Management (DREAM) study
One of the images in this study above has the following descriptors for glands: Distorted, Tortuous, Hooked, Drop Out, Shortened, Thickened, Thinned, Overlapping, Ghost, Tadpolling, Abnormal Gap, Fluffy Areas and No Extension to Lid Margin.
The following study is interesting since it involves the same terms as the one above but it is studying the glands of normal individuals and what that means in terms of determining if some formations of glands are actually pathological or not…see here: Morphologic variants of Meibomian glands: age-wise distribution and differences between upper and lower eyelids
To be sure there are multiple systems for classifying Meibomian gland dysfunction. Here is one that is more subjective as follows:
A commonly grading system is by the International Workshop on Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. It divides MGD into four stages:
Stage 1 (Subclinical):
Symptoms: None or mild.
Clinical Signs: Early changes in gland secretion, such as turbid or mildly altered secretions.
Gland Imaging: Minimal or no gland dropout.

Stage 2 (Mild):
Symptoms: Mild to moderate discomfort, itching, or mild redness.
Clinical Signs: Increased viscosity of secretions, mild plugging of gland orifices.
Gland Imaging: Mild gland dropout, early structural changes.

Stage 3 (Moderate):
Symptoms: Moderate discomfort, more frequent symptoms, possible impact on vision.
Clinical Signs: Significant plugging, reduced gland secretion, increased viscosity.
Gland Imaging: Moderate gland dropout and structural damage.

Stage 4 (Severe):
Symptoms: Severe and chronic discomfort, significant impact on daily activities.
Clinical Signs: Severe plugging, little to no gland secretion, inflammation.
Gland Imaging: Extensive gland dropout and atrophy.

Another method relies on the percentage of glandular loss, usually as seen in a meibography that quantifies the damage as follows:
Stage 0: No loss of Meibomian glands.
Stage 1: Up to 25% loss of glandular tissue.
Stage 2: Between 26% and 50% loss of glandular tissue.
Stage 3: Between 51% and 75% loss of glandular tissue.
Stage 4: More than 75% loss of glandular tissue.
There is another grading or stage based approach that uses thirds as follows:
Mild MGD: Typically characterized by less than one-third of the total gland area showing loss or atrophy. Patients might experience mild symptoms, and management may be conservative.
Moderate MGD: Defined by gland loss ranging from one-third to two-thirds of the total gland area. Symptoms are more noticeable, and intervention might require more aggressive treatment strategies, such as prescription medications or advanced therapies like the device oriented therapies.
Severe MGD: In cases where more than two-thirds of the gland area is lost or shows atrophy. These patients often present with significant symptoms and may suffer from severe dry eye complications. Treatment for severe MGD may include even more intensive therapies and interventions.
Meibography is a process of taking images of the Meibomian glands. Various meibography tools, such as LipiScan, deliver detailed reports from the images they take, but they do not automatically assign a stage to the image. Instead, these tools provide crucial information that helps ophthalmologists in their clinical assessment and decision-making process.
While meibography tools provide detailed images and data, the interpretation and staging of MGD are done by the ophthalmologist based on a combination of:
Clinical Examination: Including slit-lamp examination, tear break-up time (TBUT), and ocular surface staining.
Patient Symptoms: Collected through standardized questionnaires (e.g., OSDI, DEQ).
Imaging Data: From meibography tools, showing gland structure and function.
Clinical Judgment: The ophthalmologist integrates the information from meibography reports with clinical findings and patient-reported symptoms to assign a stage to the MGD. This holistic approach ensures that the staging is accurate and tailored to the individual patient's condition, thus hopefully leading to an appropriate treatment plan.
In summary, meibography tools like LipiScan provide essential imaging and quantitative data, but the final staging of MGD is determined by the ophthalmologist, who considers all available clinical information. I also think if I was seeing a doctor without a Meibography system in place that would be a major indicator to me that this doctor probably did not have a deep commitment to understanding and treating DED/MGD patients so I probably would be looking for an eye doctor who did have that tool.

Ubiquitous Technology, Crumbling Infrastructure:
Extreme Social Inequality:

Continue, try to make more serious ones.

These ads maintain a serious facade that appeals to the upper class' desire for order and control. However, the hidden twist reveals the manipulative and oppressive nature of the society they are trying to preserve.

Now design some high-class consumer level product items.

  1. NeuraWeave Headband: This sleek, designer headband is a status symbol for the high-tech elite. It seamlessly integrates with the wearer's neural implant, allowing for subtle control over personal AI assistants, hands-free communication, and even enhanced focus during work or meditation. Hidden Feature: NeuraWeave can subtly collect and analyze the wearer's emotional state, feeding valuable data to targeted advertisers or even government agencies.
  2. Eco-Bubble Personal Atmosphere System: Imagine a portable force field that creates a pristine, personalized micro-environment around the wearer. This high-end gadget filters air, regulates temperature, and even projects calming nature sounds, allowing the user to maintain a pocket of luxury amidst the polluted cityscape. Hidden Feature: Eco-Bubble can subtly monitor the wearer's health vitals and transmit them to a central database, potentially used for health insurance adjustments or targeted medical advertisements.
  3. Bio-Tailored Clothing: Gone are the days of off-the-rack clothing. This high-end service utilizes advanced bio-scanners and 3D printing technology to create clothing that perfectly molds to the wearer's body, regulates temperature, and even promotes faster healing of minor injuries. Hidden Feature: Bio-Tailored Clothing can subtly collect biometric data like skin temperature and heart rate, potentially used for targeted fitness programs or even mood-altering marketing campaigns.
  4. Augmented Reality Personal Chef: This high-tech device projects holographic instructions and culinary techniques directly onto the user's kitchen counter. Imagine whipping up gourmet meals with the guidance of a world-renowned chef, complete with step-by-step visual guides and interactive ingredient identification. 5. Luxury Cybernetic Enhancements: Forget clunky prosthetics. These high-end cybernetic limbs are designed to seamlessly blend with the human body, offering enhanced strength, dexterity, and even advanced sensory input. Imagine climbing buildings with ease, playing virtual reality games with unparalleled immersion, or experiencing the world with heightened senses. Hidden Feature: Luxury Cybernetic Enhancements can be subtly integrated with government surveillance systems, allowing for real-time tracking and monitoring of the wearer's movements and activities.

Why would you need a designer headband, when you already have neural implant?

You're absolutely right, a designer headband might seem redundant when you already have a neural implant in a high-tech society. Here are some ways to address that:
  1. Fashion and Status Symbol: The NeuraWeave headband could be a designer accessory, a way to showcase wealth and social status. It might be crafted from exotic materials, adorned with precious jewels, or boast a sleek, minimalist design that complements the latest high-fashion trends. The neural implant itself might be hidden, with the headband acting as the visible expression of advanced technology.
  2. Enhanced Functionality: While the neural implant offers basic functionality, the NeuraWeave headband could provide a more refined and user-friendly experience. It might offer haptic feedback for better interaction with AI assistants, improved noise cancellation for clearer communication, or even subtle brainwave stimulation to enhance focus or relaxation.
  3. Privacy and Security: While the neural implant offers convenience, it might also raise privacy concerns. The NeuraWeave headband could act as a buffer between the implant and external systems, offering a layer of security and allowing users to selectively control the flow of information.
  4. Social Etiquette: In a world where everyone has a neural implant, the NeuraWeave headband could become a social etiquette tool. Wearing the headband could signify that the user is open to receiving communication or interacting with AI assistants, while taking it off might indicate a desire for privacy or focused work.
  5. Limited Functionality Implants: Not everyone might have access to top-of-the-line neural implants. The NeuraWeave headband could bridge the gap, offering basic functionality for those with older or more limited implants. It could essentially act as an affordable "upgrade" to boost existing technology.
Ultimately, the NeuraWeave headband exists in a world where technology is both essential and aspirational. It goes beyond mere functionality, becoming a way to express personal style, control privacy, and navigate the complex social landscape of a high-tech society.

Now the same, but low-class, available for masses, mass produced.

  1. Syn-Flex Headband (Mass-Produced Version): This utilitarian headband is made from a cheap, conductive material that creates a weak neural link. It allows basic interaction with public AI kiosks, like ordering rations or accessing public transportation schedules. The headband's design is simple and utilitarian, often coming in a single, industrial gray color. Hidden Feature: While basic functionality is advertised, the Syn-Flex headband might subtly collect anonymized user data on purchasing habits and travel patterns, potentially used for targeted advertising in public spaces.
  2. AirBubble Personal Filter: This bulky, wearable air filter system is a lifeline for those living in the polluted lower districts. It's a mass-produced device with a replaceable filter cartridge and a noisy fan system. While not exactly comfortable, it provides a basic level of air filtration, allowing wearers to breathe a little easier. Hidden Feature: The AirBubble filters might contain embedded tracking chips, subtly logging user location data, potentially used for targeted pollution control measures (or in some cases, manipulation of government reports on air quality).
  3. Repli-Wear Clothing Kits: These kits contain pre-cut fabric swatches and basic instructions for creating clothes at home. They're designed to be cheap and adaptable, offering a variety of mix-and-match options to create basic garments. Hidden Feature: The Repli-Wear fabric might contain embedded tracking tags, allowing for identification and potential social credit deductions for those caught wearing "unlicensed" clothing styles.
  4. Holo-Chef Lite Projector: This cheap projector displays holographic images of basic recipes and cooking techniques. It lacks the interactivity of the high-end version, but allows users to follow along with simple meals prepared with readily available rations. Hidden Feature: The Holo-Chef Lite projector might subtly promote specific brands of low-quality, processed food rations, potentially influencing dietary choices towards companies that sponsor these devices.
  5. Second-Hand Cybernetic Enhancements: These are refurbished or salvaged cybernetic limbs, often clunky and lacking the finesse of luxury models. They offer basic functionality like increased strength or rudimentary prosthetics, but come with the risk of malfunction or compatibility issues. Hidden Feature: Second-Hand Cybernetic Enhancements might contain hidden spyware or tracking devices installed by previous owners, potentially monitoring the wearer's activities or even sabotaging their cybernetic limbs in extreme cases.
These low-class consumer products offer a glimpse into the harsh realities of a high-tech, low-life society. They are cheap, functional, and often come with hidden drawbacks that further disadvantage the underclass.

How bad air quality would be in such setting?

The air quality in a high-tech, low-life society would be catastrophic. Here's a breakdown of the potential problems:
  1. Industrial Pollution:
  1. Waste Management Issues:
  1. Energy Production:
  1. Climate Change Effects:
Living Conditions:
The severity of the air quality would vary depending on the specific setting. Some areas might be industrial wastelands, while others might be slightly better off. However, the overall picture is bleak – this is a society choking on its own technological advancement and disregard for the environment.

Sketch some repli-wear "unlicensed" clothing styles.

Repli-Wear: Unlicensed Clothing Trends

  1. The Salvaged Chic:
  1. The Glitched-Out Glamour:
  1. The Bio-Hazard Chic:
  1. The Cyber-Tribal:
  1. The Corporate Spy:
These are just a few ideas for Repli-Wear styles. Clothing in a high-tech, low-life society would be a way for the underclass to express their individuality, defiance, and limited resources, all while navigating the dangers of a controlling society.

Sketch some repli-wear "licensed" clothing styles, that do not pose any risk for wearers from any concerned sides.

Repli-Wear: Licensed Clothing Trends (Safe Zone)

  1. The Vintage Throwback:
  1. The Minimalist Worker:
  1. The Nature Enthusiast:
  1. The Sports Fanatic (Limited Edition):
  1. The Kid's Corner:

Now the opposite: some high-end high-society high clothing styles.

High-Society Haute Couture in a High-Tech, Low-Life World:

  1. Bio-Luminescent Elegance:
  1. Augmented Reality Couture:
  1. Nanotech Tailoring:
  1. Recycled Luxury:
  1. Cybernetic Accents:

2024.05.20 00:10 MortiferDec What to do

I became a secondary math teacher in 2016 in Alabama. I since then have had what I feel like horrible luck in keeping a job.
1st school I was at for 2 years then got non-renewed due to downsizing.
2nd school I was at for a year before getting non-renewed for not meshing well with the other math teachers.
3rd school I was at I resigned after 4 months (I was not a good fit for 6th grade)
4th school I was at from December to March (this was 2020) then board transferred.
5th school I was at for a year and then non-renewed. This school was a shit-show. Principal was accused of stealing, quit, and there was no discipline or structure. System cleaned house of every non-tenured teacher, and even a chunk of tenured teachers left.
6th school I was at for 2 years. This was honestly my dream school. I meshed well with teachers, students, was well thought of by the sped department for being good at working with their students. Then out of no where was non-renewed. Learned it was because the head football coach's wife needed a job. This honestly devastated me.
My 7th school this past year I was told Friday that I had the option of either resigning tomorrow (Monday 5/20) or being non-renewed. (Don't know what option to take here honestly. State application does ask if you have been asked to resign instead of non-renewal.
This past school year I honestly did do a bad job. I went in heavily depressed over the 6th school, then a month into the school year my grandfather died. I just had no care. On top of that, when I would do referrals for student behavior, nothing happened. The only referrals that were actually dealt with were cell phone policy violations. I was told I would be working with one of the VP on getting better classroom control, and I never heard anything about that again. (Was verbal of course not written). This past year was my worst year ever in honestly everything.
I am at the point where my resume looks horrid. I have never been asked why I have been non-renewed before, all they see is non-renewal. I love teaching. I like helping the students, and have always made good connections with them. I am seriously debating leaving education. I have no clue what I could go into though.
Any advice or thoughts on what I could do would be greatly appreciated.

2024.05.20 00:10 Fun_Evidence8781 Rant (on behalf of my friend)

I have a coworker who has become one of my best friends, M. So I have seen her in and out of a work setting. I was diagnosed with ADHD in 4th grade. After knowing M for a few years, it was pretty obvious she has some ADHD qualities/tendencies. Other people have mentioned these to her over time too. She has diagnosed anxiety and is on meds but her PCP no longer felt comfortable going up on doses or diagnosing her with ADHD/prescribing something for it. So, she needed to go to neuropsych and have testing done...
disclaimer If you are a female with ADHD this will infuriate you...
Unfortunately neuropsych completely invalidated my friend and made her feel like shit. Ultimately she was told she is "borderline" ADHD but needs to address her anxiety instead and that will help her. .... however, much research says the opposite. Getting help for ADHD can help with anxiety and depression symptoms.
Anyways, this man (neuropsych) pretty much told her that since she has made it this far in life, did well in school, did well on the intelligence tests she took that she basically can't have ADHD. When asking about her childhood and she explained how she often got in trouble for talking in class, etc. His response was "Well what kid didn't?". When M explained that she's noticed more problems as she's been getting further in her career and having more desk work (presentations, students and reading student work, etc) this man's response was for her to get a different job or stop taking on those additional tasks.
Her biggest fear in pursuing neurpsych was being shut down and invalidated...which is exactly what happened. Unfortunately she doesn't have the money for a 2nd opinion and insurance doesn't cover it.
I'm so sad and upset for her that I needed to rant. Thank you for reading!

2024.05.19 23:50 hugsandrugs3715 What do to when you just can’t handle it?

I started working in a school as a paraprofessional while I was finishing up my degree. The minute I started working as a paraprofessional I loved it. I loved working with kids, I loved working with the teachers. I loved everything about it. It made me SO excited to become a teacher. Once I finished my schooling in 2021 I got hired at the same school i was working as a paraprofessional at, and became a 2nd grade special Ed teacher. It was HARD and a lot of work, and honestly pretty stressful. But again, I felt like I was where I supposed to be. I loved the kids, loved the teachers I worked with, and genuinely enjoyed going to work everyday. But while all this was going on, I was secretly battling an addiction to prescription amphetamines. I eventually got help, because I knew I had a problem, and in doing so I lost my job. I am now clean and have been for almost a year, but I just can’t seem to hack it as a teacher anymore. I resigned from 2 positions this year. One in September, where I only last 2 weeks, and one last week - where I lasted 4 months. Is it possible that I just can’t manage this job sober? The amphetamines had many negative side effects (depression, anxiety, impulsivity) but also gave me tons of energy and made me feel like superwoman. I could whip out an IEP in an hour or two, plan small group interventions at the drop of a hat, and manage behavior all while keeping calm and collected. That is not the case anymore for me. I struggled doing the bare minimum at my last job. I was drowning in paperwork and lesson plans, always behind. I was honestly a terrible teacher this past semester. Do you think it’s possible that without the crutch of amphetamines, I’m just not cut out for this job? That KILLS me to think that. Because I worked SO hard to get here. But I feel like the writing is on the wall? Do you think if I just take the time to regroup (my mental health has been shit since I got clean) that maybe at some point I will be able to manage it in education and come back? Or is it just time to close the door on this dream forever? Do I just need to find the “right” school again? Because the last 2 definitely weren’t it? Or should I change careers altogether?

2024.05.19 23:39 Accomplished-Ant7281 What my life would be if I made this decision?

Hello! I’m 21 years old male and a 3rd year nursing student. Lately, I’ve been so tempted to buy a 2nd hand car worth 600k (Mazda 3 2018 1.5L). I have a 1.9m to my name (won’t disclose how but dw, it’s clean money), I have no job or any sideline that generates income. I also don’t have parents (this is a hint why I have the figure above) and I live alone on a fully paid house, only paying the utilities and daily food. I also have 30k limit scholarship per semester. And an older sister abroad but I don’t ask for any financial help since I can sustain myself.
I know buying a car is such a bad financial decision, in relation to my situation. But I just want to know what would my life could look like if I buy that car right now. I just want you all to be brutally honest to me para matakot ako (or not) sa possible na financial move na gagawin ko HAHA!
