Unknown 關斌æœȘçŸ„çš„æˆ‘ć€‘, aTaiwanese Series: Discovering Family and Love Through Self-Sacrifice — (Part 1)
Over the last few weeks, I have been watching the Taiwanese series "Unknown," https://youtu.be/Q272pIOu3co, based on Priest’s famous work, "Big Brother." Throughout its twelve episodes, this series has captivated my attention, challenged my viewpoints, encouraged me to reevaluate some deeply-held beliefs, and left me eagerly hoping for a second season that delves further into the saga of Zhiyuan and Qian. However, I am also grateful for the opportunity to experience even a single season of this thought-provoking series.
"Unknown," features Chris Chiu as the main character Wei Qian, telling the story of a young man who, at the age of 14–16, resorts to working for a gangster. Driven by the death of his abusive, drug-addicted mother and a desire to support his sister, Qian accepts various jobs including cleaning toilets and billiard equipment, eventually working his way up to become a bouncer at the hall.
During the first episode, Qian’s altruistic nature expands beyond his immediate family when he encounters a homeless boy a few years younger than him. Moved by the boy’s plight, Qian takes him in, names him Zhiyuan, and gives him his last name, Wei.
At a live fan meet for the show, actor Kurt Huang, who portrays Zhiyuan, mentions an ongoing debate on social media regarding who is the “better” character in the series: Zhiyuan or Qian. Displaying humility and admiration for his co-star, Yuan encourages fans to pick Chris Chiu’s portrayal of Qian, acknowledging Chiu’s remarkable performance and personal difficulties he has faced.
This moment during the fan meet serves as a testament to the genuine nature and selflessness that is so characteristic of Taiwanese people and their culture. Although it is true that exceptions exist, the willingness of Taiwanese people to help friends and even strangers, often at their own expense, is a quality that continues to astonish and inspire me.
Chris Chiu and Kurt Huang share a long-standing friendship that dates back to their childhood. Despite a seven-year age gap, which is often significant in Asian cultures, the two actors have maintained a strong bond, spending time together as kids and frequently gaming at each other’s houses.
Reflecting on their unique relationship, Chris has mentioned that he does not perceive any sense of seniority over Kurt, despite the age difference. Instead, he values their friendship and regards Kurt as an equal, highlighting the genuine connection and mutual respect that has developed between them over the years as well as just the hilarious antics they can get into.
Age gaps in friendships often fade into insignificance when shared interests, experiences, and mutual understanding take center stage. A prime example of this is my friendship with Mr. R., who, despite being a decade younger than me, has become one of my closest friends. The age difference rarely comes into focus, except for the occasional moment of lighthearted teasing when Mr. R. laments his advancing age. In these instances, I jokingly remind him that I will be sure to bring up his concerns in ten years’ time, when he will have a different perspective on the matter.
The friendships between Chris Chiu and Kurt Huang and myself and Mr. R. serve as a testament to the power of friendship to bridge gaps in age and of the potential for enduring bonds to form based on common ground.
Returning to "Unknown," it’s evident that this series subverts the conventional notion of a “better man,” presenting instead a balanced narrative that showcases the strengths and qualities of both Qian and Zhiyuan. In this context, the question of who is the better character becomes redundant, as each individual brings their own unique set of attributes that make them indispensable to the story and to the people they cherish.
The multifaceted nature of the characters in "Unknown" contributes to the series’ appeal, as it challenges viewers to appreciate the diverse qualities that make each character “best” in their own right. This refreshing approach to character development encourages a deeper understanding of the complexities that make up human relationships and the ways in which individuals can complement one another.
Despite the flaws and setbacks faced by Qian and Zhiyuan in Unknown, their characters remain endearing and worthy of admiration. While confusion, misunderstanding, and passion occasionally lead them astray, their enduring care and love for each other, their family, — their unwavering commitment to those they hold dear, even in the face of adversity, resonates deeply with viewers and embodies the spirit of the One Republic song “Nobody.” As such, it becomes difficult not to root for both characters and to acknowledge their efforts with an internal standing ovation.
As the first episode of "Unknown" progresses, Qian’s dedication to his family and friends is further demonstrated as he takes on multiple responsibilities. In addition to caring for his sister and Zhiyuan, whom he considers as a brother, Qian becomes a professional gamer to supplement his income with livestreams.
The turning point in the first episode of "Unknown" arrives when Qian decides to break free from the gang’s control, but his attempt to leave is met with resistance. Hu, a member of the gang, retaliates by kidnapping Zhiyuan. This then forces Qian to participate in three critical matches as a means to secure Zhiyuan’s release.
The high stakes of these matches take a toll on Qian’s physical well-being, as he sustains a punctured lung and a head injury. The consequences of these injuries are severe, leaving Qian with a blood clot on his optic nerves and debilitating migraines. This intense and emotionally charged sequence of events showcases Qian’s unwavering determination to protect his loved ones, even at great personal cost.
In a touching display of brotherly devotion and sacrifice, Qian manages to win the matches despite his injuries, securing Zhiyuan’s freedom. Overwhelmed with emotion, the 11-year-old Zhiyuan breaks down in tears, expressing his belief that Qian should have prioritized his own safety.
Qian, however, reassures Zhiyuan that leaving him behind was never an option, emphasizing that without Zhiyuan, he has nothing. Qian’s heartfelt admission, declaring that without Zhiyuan and his sister Lily, he would have nothing in this world, reveals the depth of his love and commitment to his family.
With the support of his friend Sang Pang, whose parents offer him affordable housing, Qian also joins a startup gaming company and finishes a four-year college degree in three years. Alongside Sang Pang, Qian works with Xiong, an individual whose life experiences have shaped him into a resilient and driven person. After facing the adversity of his wife leaving him, Xiong sought refuge in a monastery but was encouraged by the monks to reintegrate into society. The diverse backgrounds and journeys of these characters, brought together by their shared passion for gaming, add depth and richness to the narrative of Unknown.
The poignant mantras uttered by Qian and Zhiyuan in the first episode of “Unknown” encapsulate the essence of their individual journeys and the heart of the series itself. Qian’s powerful statement, “Stay alive. . . live on. . . so you can find your home,” highlights his unwavering determination to create a better life for his family, even in the face of adversity.
Zhiyuan’s words, “In the end, life comes down to just a few things. . . where you come from, where you linger, what you want, and what’s left,” resonate with a deep understanding of the complexities of life and the importance of staying true to oneself and one’s loved ones.
"Unknown" explores the ways in which Qian and Zhiyuan navigate these mantras, grappling with the notion that sometimes, prioritizing the safety and well-being of one’s family may require the willingness to lose or give up personal ambitions. The characters’ growth and resilience in the face of these challenges ultimately culminate in their ability to overcome obstacles and emerge victorious, all while protecting the people they hold most dear and gaining what they most want/need in their lives, one another.
This series has had a profound emotional impact on me, offering a powerful exploration of themes such as love, family, and self-discovery. Its ability to connect with viewers on a personal level is a testament to the depth and authenticity of its storytelling.
This intense emotional engagement has been both cathartic and demanding, requiring introspection and self-reflection to fully appreciate the complex themes that Unknown presents. The delay in writing this series of posts is a result of this necessary process, allowing me to fully absorb and understand the impact of the show on a personal level.
"Unknown" has provided me with a newfound understanding and appreciation for the complexities of interpersonal connections and the transformative power of love and resilience. I am forever grateful to the creators for crafting such a powerful story that has not only captivated my attention; but also, aided in my personal growth and emotional healing.

2024.05.20 04:18 snicolls AITA: Husband recording me (INFJ) without my knowledge.

I wanted to ask other INFJ's how they would feel in this situation... I own my own business and spent the day today doing zoom interviews with potential employees. I have a deep fear of being observed, so interviews are already a bit of a stretch for me. My husband (who knows this) got it in his head that it would be a good idea to record me doing the interviews for MY business without my knowledge. He then watched them, critiqued them, and now wants to tell me all the things I did wrong. He says he did it to help me, but I never asked him to help in this area and he knows I have fear of being recorded. I told him it was an invasion of privacy and a breach of trust. He says I'm over reacting, being ridiculous, and that he can record what ever he wants because I was using his office for the interviews. What say you?

2024.05.20 04:12 FemGaymer1204 Water features

This seems to be a taboo subject in alot of frog groups, so I've been afraid to ask. My darts have a full 100% bio enclosure. I see folks that have water features in theirs and I love them. Everyone says not to do it because of bacteria and because frogs will drown. But, realistically, if you're keeping up on your maintenance- bacteria is not an issue or shouldn't be. And if the feature is shallow enough, say like a babbling brook for example, there's not really a risk of drowning unless you have issues with territorial behaviors and have a risk of them drowning each other (in that case you should be watching the frogs closely and separating them as necessary anyways). In the wild these frogs aren't prevented from going in water, so I'm of the mind to not deprive them of it in captivity. What are everyone's thoughts or experiences with a simple water feature in their enclosure? I'm not talking several inches of water or a deep pooling anywhere. Just a waterfall with a babbling run off that's cycled with a pump and maintained regularly. Thank you in advance!

2024.05.20 04:11 DogBuggies I love being alive

I love living. I love my friends. I love spending time with them. I love music. I love so many things in this world. I love little things. I love how the rain feels against my skin. I love dressing up pretty. I love how clouds look in the sky no matter the weather. I love feeling the dirt against my bare feet. I love dancing. I love watching movies. I love the way colors look. I love seeing animals in trees. I love the songs birds sing in the morning.
But I still want to kill myself. There's pain in everything I do. My body aches and my mind is in turmoil. I have so much anxiety I can't get out of bed some days. I'm afraid of being. I can't stand being alone, and I can't stand being with anyone. There's no hate in my heart for anyone but myself. I hate the way I am. But I can't stop. I'm a leech upon my family. My friends have to go out of their way to make me comfortable, and its never enough. I'm always in pain. I have a sadness deep within me that I can never escape. I don't think I will ever be okay. I just want out. And I don't want to hurt my friends like that. But it's too much. It hurts to live. I shouldn't be. I dont want to be. I just want to be free.

Backstory

“There is no innovation and creativity without failure.” ***BrenĂ© Brown*
Taylor Bennett Armstrong was born into a creatively vibrant family. His father, Benjamin Armstrong, was a dedicated artist who often spent hours in his studio, painting and sculpting. Benjamin's work was deeply inspired by classical art, and his studio was filled with references to mythological themes and ancient techniques. This environment planted the seeds of creativity in Taylor from a very young age.
Taylor’s biological mother was Techne, the goddess of art, craft, and invention, but he had no knowledge of her divine heritage. His mother left shortly after his birth, leaving Benjamin to raise Taylor on his own. Despite the absence of his mother, Taylor's early childhood was filled with love and encouragement from his father.
When Taylor was five, Benjamin met Eliza, a talented graphic designer, at an art exhibit. They quickly bonded over their shared love for art and soon married. Eliza embraced Taylor as her own, though she struggled to understand his unique, often chaotic way of thinking and creating.
Even as a young child, Taylor showed remarkable intelligence and creativity. By the age of six, he was building simple machines and drawing intricate designs. His father was both amazed and slightly concerned when Taylor began to take apart household appliances to understand how they worked. While Benjamin encouraged his son's curiosity, Eliza worried about the constant mess and occasional accidents that resulted from Taylor's experiments.
Taylor’s half-sister, Rachel, was born when he was five. She looked up to her big brother with admiration, often following him around and watching as he created his various inventions. Despite the occasional mishap, Taylor and Rachel shared a close bond, with Taylor frequently making small toys and gadgets to entertain her.
School was both a blessing and a curse for Taylor. His intelligence allowed him to excel academically, but his unique way of thinking and his constant tinkering often got him into trouble. Teachers labeled him a "problem child" due to his inability to sit still and follow conventional methods. Taylor's inventions occasionally caused disruptions, further cementing his reputation.
Socially, Taylor found it hard to connect with his peers. His enthusiasm and intelligence often intimidated other children, and he was frequently taken advantage of by classmates who used him to boost their own grades. These experiences left Taylor feeling lonely and self-conscious about his naivety, although he never let it dampen his cheerful spirit.
Taylor's life took a dramatic turn when he was 15 years old. One day, while working on a particularly ambitious project in his makeshift workshop, he was visited by Oleander, a satyr sent by Camp Half-Blood. Oleander had been observing Taylor for some time, noting his extraordinary abilities and his connection to the divine.
Oleander revealed to Taylor the truth about his mother, Techne, and his demigod heritage. At first, Taylor was skeptical, thinking it was some sort of elaborate joke or fantasy. However, Oleander's ability to demonstrate his satyr powers and his deep knowledge of Taylor's unexplained talents eventually convinced him.
Explaining the situation to his family was a challenge. Benjamin, who had always suspected that there was something special about Taylor, took the news in stride. Eliza, though worried and confused, ultimately supported the decision, understanding that Camp Half-Blood could provide Taylor with the guidance he needed. Rachel was both excited and scared for her brother, worried about the dangers he might face and she would miss him.
Thankfully, despite the huge distance he and Oleander had to travel from Toronto to Long Island went calmly, for the most part, with not many delays or monsters attacking them.
Well, at least until they reached New York. After that, the whole “calm journey” was out the window. It almost seemed like all the monsters decided to wait until they were close to their destination to suddenly appear one after the other. First they had to somehow avoid a cyclops. Then they were attacked by dracanaea. And finally, they were chased by harpies until they crossed the border of Camp Half-Blood.
By some miracle, they were still alive.
What a way to be introduced to demigod life.

Present Day

“Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun” Mary Lou Cook
Taylor's arrival at Campbell Half-Blood was
 something, alright.
You know, being chased by monsters from New York to Long Island, passing out in between attacks and then waking up in the Medic Cabin feeling like you've been hit by a truck and maimed by a cat at the same time was, in short, not fun. It also didn't help the fact that he had to stay in bed to get treated for what, hours. Which, for someone like Taylor, was absolute torture. Good for him then that demigods, apparently, had magic healing and he didn't have to stay for days instead. At least Oleander was around to explain every detail about the world he's been thrust into now that he was out of danger. And as a plus, he was also claimed, so yay! He had no clue who Techne was, but he was sure he would learn soon enough.
So, what does Taylor do after getting patched up? Does he wait and rest for a bit just to make sure everything is okay with him? Does he stop for a moment to process everything that has happened to him in the last 24 hours?
No! Of course not! This is Taylor, after all. Him staying put for more than 10 minutes would be a miracle already.
Instead, he just went off on his own to see what this Camp Half-Blood was all about. He just had to get to his cabin first, which would be relatively easy with Oleander's instructions, and then he could explore this place to his heart's content!
Hopefully, Camp Half-Blood would be ready for the chaotic force Taylor would prove to be.
[OOC: Hello, everyone! Say hello to my new character, Taylor! Feel free to interact with him literally anywhere at Camp, he's probably going to be there at some point anyway lmao. Thanks for reading;)]

2024.05.20 04:07 TheDutchDemon Who here runs a SaaS/SwaS model and is making profit doing so? I have some questions

I've spent the better part of the last week going through courses on how SAAS works and how to sell it to clients. I'd been operating under the SMMA model by focusing on running Facebook ads for mortgage loan officers, with the intent to relaunch after making some adjustments to the business to get an appointment setter to call the leads and book them onto the calendar rather than having the loan officer do the leg work.
Did a bit of a deep dive on SAAS and I have a general understanding of it, but the thing that a lot of the courses I look at don't teach is how to build out the things that you're going to sell to clients. The tutorials I've watched had me importing snapshots that just dump a whole bunch of Calendars, Websites, Automations, Funnels, etc that I don't know how the ins and outs of, so it's been a bit overwhelming.
I have a couple of smaller questions, but I'm mainly coming here to have this answered:
Where do you start?
Assuming the technicalities surrounding the operations of a business are already built out (niche, payment processor, domain, etc) how do you focus on what to build FIRST (through GoHighLevel, in my case) when you're overwhelmed with figuring out how to build the thing to get the results your clients are paying for?
Now for some of the smaller questions I've come across:
  1. Considering GoHighLevel has a website builder, is there any reason to mess around with WordPress?
  2. I was trying to figure out how to have a "branded" email rather than just my Gmail, but I can't set up the dedicated domain to have that properly routed. This may be an issue unique to Squarespace right now since I can't delete records either, but if anybody has figured out a way to use their regular Gmail account to send/receive @ companyname emails I'd love to hear it.
  3. Some courses advocate for stuff like HL ProTools Uphex or Yext. How essential is it to have these forms of support early on?
  4. What do you think is required to build out to have a minimum viable product to test?
  5. Is there anything you've learned that I didn't ask about here that you would've liked to have the answer to in your own journey early on?

2024.05.20 04:02 subbacultchaa Day 7!

I set an absurd number of goals for myself today to keep myself distracted from drinking. Sunday was always my all day drinking day. From brunch til I’d pass out.
I woke up and asked my wife if she wanted to go to this breakfast spot she’s wanted to try (we never tried it because they don’t have booze). We went and it was packed, which caused some tension. I realized that there are little things that irritate me (not just about my wife) and I can’t just ignore them or numb them with alcohol anymore, so I’m really feeling them all. I also feel more confident speaking up because I’m not overcome by guilt from being drunk/a drunk. We did end up bickering a bit, but the breakfast was awesome. We went to the grocery and picked up some stuff for dinner, then we went to my friend’s 4 year old’s bday party.
So wholesome.
My wife proudly told all of my friends that we’d quit drinking, which everyone was supportive of because most of my friends have also gone sober. Hearing her say it out loud and so definitively to a group of our peers made it a bit too real for a moment. I started thinking about drinking again, how long I’d have to do this until everyone would forget and let me drinking again

Afterwards we went and got a massage, walked around Chinatown, and then came home. This is when my cravings started. It was nice out, everyone was out walking their dogs, kids playing in the street. All I wanted was a beer. I deserved a beer.
I went inside and asked my wife if we could deep clean under the couch lol. We did. We moved all of the furniture and cleaned every corner of the living room.
I still wanted a beer.
I went outside and washed both of our cars. At this point she was just standing on the front steps watching me.
I came in and she had made dinner. I ate standing up while folding all of the laundry and mopping the whole house. I am insane.
Finally, I felt tired and fully satisfied that I had scratched the surface of undoing how much I’ve neglected my life over the last few years. Even better I’m not longer craving a beer, but I’m really looking forward to the cravings going away and for the ability to relax without alcohol and to not have to move nonstop from waking up til bed. In time
?
Thanks for listening!

2024.05.20 04:01 INEEDTONSOFADVICE How much time to reapply after being medically withdrawn?

Hi,
Context 1, Early June
I was medically withdrawn from school (selective, large university) in September of 2022. It started, in early June of that year, with me having my first cold when I travelled for a weekend event, in three or four years, and the cold was so bad, I was so confused and tired I almost boarded the wrong flight home (like I walked down the bridge and almost entered the wrong plane to God knows where, until I turned around and a flight attended had to give me like a very kind pep talk).
It started with a strep throat during that weekend, then I began to cough so hard I felt dizzy, and I didn't stop coughing until December of that year. It was the worst cold I've had in my life, and I think it was made worse by the additional focus on hygiene during COVID (face masks etc.), which might have weakened my imune system. It was my first time going out without wearing a mask, and I happened to catch a cold.
Context 2, Late June/July
When I returned, I was alone in my off campus apartment, my body would itch (and this didn't make sense because there aren't any insects like mosquitos or I guess even ants in this area since it's so arid), I would sweat when I slept in my air conditioned room, I would have to walk a mile from my off campus apartment in the Arizona like heat and climate of July and August while having a cold. When I entered my over-cooled central AC apartment (I would have to leave windows and doors open to make it warmer) from the 95+ degree weather (I'm from a cold area of the country, but I grew up in several continents, and I'd never experienced this much heat), my stomach would begin to hurt from the instant change in temperature. I had to do really important work stuff that I couldn't miss, so I took different medications which caused my chest to hurt. I didn't want to go to the hospital because I was on the opposite side of the country, and I didn't know what would happen since I'm completely unfamiliar with how medical things are handled, and I had never stayed overnight in a hospital before, and I knew what I'm experiencing would probably warrant an extended stay.
Context 3, July/August
I then stopped eating, sleeping, and drinking water. Someone began spam texting me implicitly illicit texts (I would block the number, but another one would appear from another number, so like a dozen different numbers, and the texts weren't like a bot or automated, it would include photos and mention things I did recently e.g. go to the bar, it didn't ask for money or to download an app, it felt like someone I could have met or known irl was harassing me, perhaps as just a joke), and I barely give my number out and change it around once a year, so I was just so upset someone I knew gave my number to someone, or is doing this. Because of the delirium from the cold, I the began to send like weird (but not in any way, threatening or harassing, texts to mostly my friends who also attended the school) to figure out who gave my number or was behind the harassing texts. I had also experienced another issue with on campus, irl, harassment from a previous roommate that I had to report to campus safety multiple times, and I guess perhaps just because of the delirium, considering the digital harassment, I had become super persistent about my physical harassment that occurred just the semester before, and then an academic dean seriously offered to help, but then this led to a meeting with several deans. A day after this meeting, I emailed one of the deans to say that I am crying, and I was emailed at 8am to do a pysch evaluation at 11am in the morning. Because I hadn't slept the night before, and I had a feeling this would be a consequential meeting, in addition to having to walk 1 mile in the afternoon heat to this meeting, I asked to reschedule and then I was told no. Then I was sent a Maxient involuntary medical withdrawal letter.
Context 4, Now
I've been to about half a dozen pysch doctors (even one that's a lecturer at a leading medical research university), and about four therapists, since, and I haven't been diagnosed with anything definitively. My current therapist, who is a former (or current) professor in psychology, and I've met with since late November of 2023, still doesn't have a diagnoses. I present extremely well, and I'm usually more social and normal than most people (as in, whenever I do any internship or research program, I'm usually assigned management mentors, or tracked towards management as opposed to the actual job, since I just seem so social/"normal"), so I guess you would have to look really deep to find something. I know that I probably have a sleep issue, so after meeting with a sleep doctor, I'm trying to setup a sleep study. In the meantime, I've been prescribed medication to combat day time sleepiness. Other related medical issues include the fact that my dad has Cushing syndrome, and I'm pretty confident I have it, or at least a cortisol issue (I have the visible/physical signs, as well as persistent high blood pressure, and other symptoms). Then, I also have several skin issues, that I'm also treating as well. I'm also getting ready to get evaluated for an anxiety issue which multiple doctors think I have.
To be extremely honest, I'm kind of grateful I experienced this because I understand my body more, and how to seek help when my body is overwhelmed. Also, I kind of knew there would be an job crisis issue in April of 2022 since interest rates were rising and it would lead to less investments, therefore less jobs, so I've kind of enjoyed using this time to relax, travel, and learn new things. However, I'm starting to become anxious that I won't be able to return at all.
Question
Which leads to the question and title of my post, do time limits on withdrawals or leaves of absence apply to medical withdrawals or leaves of absence? My grades are pretty good, and I have no disciplinary issues, so I can still transfer, but I would still like to get back in, to be extremely frank, I would like to get back in first before transferring (just to tie up some loose ends to make a stronger transfer application). The way the communication (emails) from the schools non academic deans are worded, it's being made to seem as if I can't return at all (unless I reapply through admissions/the common app) regardless of if a doctor clears me. The way the letter is worded, it seems like I need to be cleared by a medical professional. My advisor, whose a non-educational lawyer, said I would only be approved to return if I take medication for 6-12 months. An email with a non-academic dean said this as well.
Side note
The most upsetting thing about this whole experience has been attempting to communicate this to people early on, who I usually wouldn't go to with issues, but my close advisors aren't familiar with academia and medical issues, so I've been forced to, and getting told I should leave the school or just college entirely because I have some severe psychiatric issue, that no doctor or therapist I've met thinks I have. It's I think part of what caused me to take so long, until I began speaking with my current therapist whose helped me kind of recount what happened. I feel like, it's very easy in similar situations to mine, to be directed towards potentially a wrong and inapt direction and I think the stem of this is the stigma around mental health.

2024.05.20 03:57 toharabapu Please help

I have been masturbating for more than a decade now. I have a gf LDR so we don't get together quite often and the urge to have sex just makes me watch some porn and masturabte. My health has taken a hit I left gym a yaar ago due to other health issues, but since then my body has taken a major hit due to masturabtion I suspect. Lately I have been a bit depressed and since a month I have started to masturbate more often like once or twice a day and I have joint pains on my right knee and I feel a bit of body pain as well and alos my physique has been ruined. I want to stop this. I have tried to control my mind saying that I won't masturabte. You know there was almost two years where I didn't masturabte at all in between whenever I used to feel the urge to masturbate I used to taka e deep breathe and it would go away. But now with the early stages of depresseion kicking in and lack of sleep idk I am not able to control this it feels like a escape. Due to my other health issues I have been bed ridden for more than a year now. Please help me get out of this.

2024.05.20 03:56 dookiehed Tonsillectomy Experience (38m)

Hey, figured I'd share my tonsillectomy experience because this sub was a great resource for me leading up and after my surgery.
I had surgery on May 2, after quite a bizarre experience with my tonsils. I've had tonsil stones for as long as I can remember, but as everyone here can attest to, ENTs and doctors don't really treat stones. Also, at about the base of my left tonsil, the tissue had hardened a bit, and I suspected that I had a tonsil stone wedged deep that I could feel. After seeing about four ENTs and two oral surgeons, they all gave me the same recommendation: get those suckers yanked out.
I still wasn't convinced so I asked about getting some imaging done (I'm in the US with good private insurance, so relatively easy to schedule, but still decent $$$). I got an MRI and it didn't show anything nefarious, but interestingly enough the tech noted a "lesion" on my right tonsil, the one that felt perfectly fine. Given this new information my ENT suggested a tonsillectomy because it was really the only option I had left and every other doctor suggested the same.
I scheduled my surgery and soon enough the day came. I've had surgeries before (2x ACL, 1x meniscus over a 30 year soccer 'career') so I knew what to expect. I didn't anticipate being in the surgery center with 6 year olds as I was the only adult getting the procedure that day!!
Day 1: They wheeled me back and knocked me out, and when I woke up I remember being surprised that the pain I was in was probably a 9/10. My second ACL surgery was like an 11/10 when I woke up (interestingly enough my first ACL surgery was like 3/10) so I was initially surprised how uncomfortable I was.
They fed me ice pops and gave me ice water and tried talking to me, but before I knew it, I was on my way home. In the US, if you go to a private surgery facility, they generally wheel you out within 10 mins of waking up.
The rest of the day was pretty brutal as swallowing was uncomfortable, but my mouth kept filling with saliva so I essentially had to keep drinking water and swallowing, which wasn't great. Eating was completely out of the question, but I had stocked up on some ready to drink protein drinks that kept me relatively satiated. I kept to a pretty strict medicinal schedule which helped me sleep a bit.
Day 2: Still uncomfortable but the pain was significantly less, maybe a 5-6/10. I took about 5ml every 4-5 hours of liquid oxycodone and caught up on Vanderpump Rules. I kept a large cooler by my bed stocked with ice from Sonic, Alo Water, protein drinks, a million water bottles and ice packs. I had a couple of ice pops, but honestly, I just didn't have any appetite for ice cream or ice pops or the like. Ice cold water and the Alo Water were great.
Day 3-4: Pain was about a 4/10 and getting better. I kept to the same schedule for medicine, trash TV shows, and water + ready to drink protein. My wife made me some pastina pasta with butter and although it took me 45 mins to eat a couple of spoonfuls, it did a lot for my mind. I also ate one scrambled egg, but it took me a while. I also had my bowel movement! This is very important after surgery!! Please take some stool softener!!!
However, on Day 4 right before bed around midnight, I "spit" (aka let drool fall out of my mouth) and noticed blood in my saliva. My doctor just said to call if you see any bright blood in your saliva and I noticed it more and more, but not a lot of volume. Of course I freaked out and called at 1am, but my understanding is that a little blood is ok and should resolve itself with ice water and ice gargling. It's really only if your mouth is filling with blood rapidly that you should head to the hospital.
Day 5: I woke up out of a decent sleep at 4am not in pain, but seriously uncomfortable, like my throat and mouth were incredibly sore. The painkillers really helped and I felt like I had taken a step back in the recovery. I could start to talk a little bit more, but nothing more than a couple of whispered sentences at a time.
Day 6: Still sore, but I remember feeling like I turned a corner finally.
Day 7: Back to work! I work hybrid so I was home to recover and didn't have any problems concentrating or typing or anything. I had only been taking the painkillers maybe once a day, usually at night.
I'm a little over 2 weeks now and I feel as though I'm completely back to eating normally and speaking normally, though I can't talk too loud or for too long. After living with tonsil stones for so long, my mouth feels a lot cleaner if that makes sense.
No regrets on the surgery. Looking back, spending time in front of a mirror pushing calcified food particles out of crevices in your mouth is a wild way to spend your time. The recovery was tough I'm not gonna lie, but it is relatively short.
I found myself just like drooling saliva out of my mouth over a sink because I didn't want to swallow anymore. Ice cold water makes swallowing way more tolerable so try to always have ice cold water on hand at all times. I drink water like a psychopath so I was super hydrated, to the point where I was peeing every 45 mins the first two days. I couldn't imagine being dehydrated and trying to recover.
If I could do it over again, I would brew more tea with plenty of honey and let it cool down and then drink it cold. Honey is basically a wonder drug but I didn't utilize it enough in the beginning.
I found and downloaded a text to speech app, which was pretty handy. My kids loved it.
Here are some essentials that other people have mentioned here but I'll list them below. Good luck!!
Pillow Wedge for elevated sleep - I actually still use this as I enjoy sleeping a bit elevated now
Alo Water with Honey - I didn't realize there are clear pieces of aloe vera "pulp" in the drink, which was a super weird experience. I wound up straining the pulp out. Also, try to cut this with water, there's an insane amount of sugar in the huge bottles and you don't want any unnecessary discomfort while you're trying to recover.
Warm and Cool Mist Humidifier - I already owned this and I had it running basically 24/7. I still woke up with a dry mouth which is kind of miserable, but I think it would've been worse if I didn't have this.
Fairlife Core Power Protein Drinks - 26 or 42 grams of protein is amazing when you're recovering. They are a bit expensive, so I picked up a case of the Fairlife Nutrition Plan from my local Costco.
Sonic Pebble Ice - Pebble ice is so much better than regular ice from a freezer or if you're freezing a tray. I don't know why. It's so much easier to chew and it's so much more satisfying to put in your water, especially recovering from a tonsillectomy. If you don't leave near a Sonic, try to find pebble ice somewhere!
Miralax, 7 Once Daily Doses - You NEED a stool softener. The opioids will back you up. The worst part of my ACL recovery was that first bowel movement. I didn't stay on top of my stool softener game. You gotta get that first BM out of the way ideally within like 2-3 days.
RTIC 52 QT Cooler - It's not necessary to have a $200 cooler next to your bed, but if you already have a nice one like a Yeti or RTIC, I'd definitely recommend keeping it near where you are recovering.
Tongue Scraper - I didn't brush my teeth for like 3 days and I felt awful about it. I'd recommend at least a tongue scraper to keep up on the hygiene.
Ice Pack Head Wrap - I thought I would use this more, but it came in handy on days 5-6. I didn't need it, but I'm glad it was around.

2024.05.20 03:54 tsuki____ The Art of Space: A Martial Cultivation Story

My name is Li Wei, and in my world, martial arts are everything. From the moment we are born, we are immersed in a culture that reveres strength, skill, and the pursuit of perfection through martial cultivation. Schools and sects dot the landscape, each dedicated to different forms and philosophies of combat. Our society is governed by these schools, with the strongest martial artists holding positions of power and influence.
For most of my life, I was ordinary. Born to a humble family with no notable lineage, I trained diligently but struggled to make progress in the traditional martial arts. My peers surpassed me, and I watched as they were recruited by prestigious sects while I remained in the shadows. I often wondered if there was a place for someone like me in a world where strength dictated one's worth.
Everything changed on my sixteenth birthday. It was during the Festival of Awakening, a grand event where young martial artists tested their affinities and received guidance from the elders. The town square was bustling with excitement as we gathered to discover our potential. I was nervous, fully expecting to be told that I had no significant affinity and to continue my life of mediocrity.
When my turn came, I stepped forward and placed my hand on the crystal orb that measured our affinities. For a moment, nothing happened. Then, the orb began to glow with a faint, shimmering light, unlike anything the elders had ever seen. The light grew brighter, pulsing with a strange energy that seemed to warp the space around it. Gasps filled the air, and the elders exchanged bewildered looks.
"You have the affinity with Space Martial Arts," the head elder announced, his voice filled with awe and confusion. "This is unprecedented. We have never encountered such an affinity before."
I was stunned. Space Martial Arts? What did that even mean? The elders had no answers for me. They were as perplexed as I was. However, they knew one thing: my path would be different from anyone else's. They urged me to seek out the legendary Sage of the Void, a reclusive master rumored to possess knowledge of the most esoteric martial arts.
With little more than a name and a direction, I set out on a journey to find the Sage of the Void. My travels took me through rugged mountains, dense forests, and vast deserts. Along the way, I encountered other martial artists, some of whom were curious about my affinity, while others viewed me with suspicion or hostility. I had to defend myself more than once, using my nascent abilities to manipulate space, bending the distance between myself and my opponents.
Weeks turned into months, and just as I began to lose hope, I found him. The Sage of the Void lived in a secluded valley, surrounded by ancient stones etched with mysterious symbols. He was an old man, with a long white beard and eyes that seemed to see through the fabric of reality itself. He welcomed me with a knowing smile, as if he had been expecting me.
"Welcome, Li Wei," he said, his voice resonating with a deep, calming presence. "You have much to learn, and the path ahead will be arduous. But if you are willing, I will teach you the Art of Space."
Under the sage's tutelage, I delved into the mysteries of space. I learned to manipulate the very fabric of reality, creating portals, bending distances, and even distorting time to some extent. My training was grueling, pushing my mind and body to their limits. The sage was a harsh but fair master, demanding perfection and relentless in his pursuit of my potential.
Months turned into years, and my skills grew. I mastered the basics and began to understand the deeper principles of Space Martial Arts. I could teleport short distances, create pockets of distorted space to trap my enemies, and even phase through solid objects. My understanding of space allowed me to predict and counter my opponents' moves, making me a formidable fighter.
As my training neared its completion, the sage revealed the true purpose of my affinity. "The world is on the brink of a great upheaval," he told me one evening, as we sat by a crackling fire. "There are forces that seek to disrupt the balance of our realm, to tear the very fabric of reality apart. You, Li Wei, are the key to preventing this catastrophe. Your mastery of space will allow you to combat these threats and restore harmony."
With a newfound sense of purpose, I returned to the world, ready to face the challenges ahead. News of my abilities had spread, and many were eager to test their strength against mine. I joined a prestigious sect, the Azure Dragon School, where I quickly rose through the ranks, earning the respect and admiration of my peers.
However, not everyone welcomed my rise. Rival sects and power-hungry individuals saw me as a threat. They conspired against me, challenging me to duels and sending assassins in the dead of night. Each encounter pushed me to refine my skills further, to unlock new depths of my potential.
The real test came when an ancient evil, long thought to be sealed away, began to stir. The barriers between dimensions weakened, and malevolent spirits and creatures poured into our world. Chaos reigned as sects united to fight the encroaching darkness. I stood at the forefront of this battle, using my mastery of space to turn the tide.
In the final confrontation, I faced the Dark Overlord, a being of immense power and malice. Our battle raged across dimensions, tearing through the fabric of reality itself. The Overlord was formidable, but I had something he did not: the wisdom and training of the Sage of the Void. I used every technique, every ounce of my strength, to combat him.
In the climactic moment, I drew upon the deepest reserves of my power, creating a spatial anomaly that trapped the Overlord in a timeless void. With a final, desperate effort, I sealed the rift, restoring balance to our world.
Exhausted but victorious, I returned to my sect. The world hailed me as a hero, the savior who had prevented the collapse of reality. Yet, I knew my journey was far from over. The Art of Space was still a mystery, with countless secrets yet to be uncovered. I continued my training, driven by the knowledge that as long as I drew breath, I would protect my world from any threat.
In a realm where martial arts are everything, I, Li Wei, stand as the master of the most enigmatic and powerful art of all: the Art of Space. My journey is eternal, my purpose clear, and my resolve unbreakable. The legacy of the Sage of the Void lives on in me, and I will ensure that balance is maintained, no matter the cost.

2024.05.20 03:47 LittleCat761 My family lives in a house full of filth and bugs and I don’t know what to do.

I’m a young college student living with my parents and younger siblings. My youngest sibling is 2 years old and ever since they were born our house has been a disaster. I clean and clean and clean and it just gets dirty again because my father and my 10 year old brother don’t clean up after themselves and my mother works all week and nights and I can only do so much.
Our living room has carpet if you can even call it that anymore. It’s covered in stains and there’s always food left on it because my parents feed the baby on the carpet and don’t clean up after them. It’s always full of baskets of laundry because my parents just leave them out there and never fold them. Because of the food ants have been crawling through our front door climbing all over it and now they are crawling all over our dining room tile floor picking up little things of crumbs off the floor.
What really pissed me off is that our cats food bowls are in the dining room as well, there were ANTS CRAWLING ALL OVER THEIR BOWLS AND WATER. I love our animals but they do not deserve that.
It doesn’t stop at ants. Our kitchen is disgusting. I always make a point to clean out my dishes before putting them in our sink. But nobody else does. The smell is horrid. There’s always noodles and random food pieces in our sink. Food and dinner stay out on the counter and stove over night. For days even. And there’s just other random crap all over our counters as well.
My father doesn’t even watch my younger siblings I have to. He stays in his room smoking weed and talking to random people on discord instead of helping cleaning up the house or god forbid his own messes.
The other night I was getting myself a glass of water and I saw a roach crawling on the counter. That was it for me. Apparently my father saw one in the sink also. I was horrified and disgusted. I dropped my glass of water and went to my room and just cried. I can’t live like this anymore. I feel disgusting and uncomfortable everywhere besides my bedroom. But I don’t want to leave my younger siblings by themselves in this disgusting excuse of a “home.” I want to leave but I have no where else to go. I don’t know how to knock some sense into my parents and ask them to all help deep clean the house and KEEP IT CLEAN. I’m defeated. Please help me figure out what to do.

2024.05.20 03:43 SageJarosz Ep 16: Disciple

Previous chapter
Fu Kong pulled a large kettle from her sleeve and began to throw in some aromatic herbs before she continued. “We'll need to do much before we can build your foundation. From there, you'll need to quickly advance through the first few stages, if you hope to withstand just the pressure of their presence.”
“What do you mean?” He finished washing himself and wrapped some of the loose spurs around his body. “How could I hope to stand against that divine power, especially when those who are thousands of times stronger than me didn't fare any better?”
Her laugh filled the cave. It wasn’t exaggerated. Just. Present.
“Define power?” She chuckled while hiding a toothy smile behind her sleeve. “Sweet child, they are like mere insects to me. Although I could handle them after learning where they crawled off to, I will not.”
Fu Kong finished off the last of her cup and set it down, with it a weight settled on the cave and her tone became much more serious.
“It's true that they disrespected me by acting freely within my territory, but this is not my justice to seek. Your village wasn’t even something in their sights. Those
children fought without concern for their surroundings, and you suffered because of it.” Her glare bore through him to emphasize her words. “I will teach you to reach a truly divine power so that you may bring them to justice with your own hands.”
A lump formed in Mareus’ throat. What was she talking about? Justice? How can somebody like him, someone so ordinary who can't even cultivate, be expected to take on not one but two god-like beings that can reshape the landscape as an afterthought?
The sudden shift in the conversation, left him thinking for a moment. On one hand, it was like she was spouting out dreams. On the other, it felt like she was offering the chance of several lifetimes. Either way, something felt off. Like she was raising a tool for matters that she couldn't get her hands dirty with.
Mareus didn't know anything about the customs of the outside world. He only knew about the stories that his elders would pass down of heroes from far away lands. Normally wouldn't a benefactor offer you the chance to right a wrong and gain some compensation from the offending party? This was more like she wanted him to completely destroy them and take everything that they have. At least, she made it seem that way.
Regardless of what he thought. If she was telling truth, this was the only chance he had at justice for his people. If she really could provide him the power, then he could always figure out what that justice looked like later on.
Steeling his nerves, Mareus stared into her eyes, heat rising up from his stomach. “What do I have to do?”
A brief flash of emotion akin to excitement flashed across her face for a brief moment before she said something inaudible to herself and turned back to him.
“First, you'll eat.” Fu Kong commanded.
She handed him a small bowl of a pale brown mush. It didn't have any sort of strong scent, but he could feel comfortable heat through the wooden dish. The bowl was exactly the same as every other meal she had brought him, but never touched. Only this time, the meal didn’t bring out a ravenous hunger from him.
Mareus took an experimental sip. He felt its warmth go down his throat and settled in his stomach, it radiated out and left a long overdue sensation of fullness. The food was just as bland as he was expecting.
It was so good.
He was about to dig his fingers into the mush and devour it right there when she knocked his bony knuckles with a spoon.
“Eat slowly, you haven’t eaten anything for two weeks.”
Mareus conceded that she was right. He once saw a villager, who was lost in the forest for a week without food, desperately stuff themself. If he did the same. His stomach wouldn’t have been able to handle the shock, and most likely would have made him sicker in the end.
“It’s a special congee I’ve prepared. The first few bowls I brought were normal, but as time went on I was forced to take special precautions into account.” She took a seat next to the desk and patted his stool.
Mareus briefly acknowledged the new chair and took his seat. It felt like his body was recovering with every bite. Each spoonful healing his aching heart rather than the bruises on his body. He suspected that was what the special bandages were for.
“Thank you for the food
Madam.” He quickly added. “I haven’t had anything this delicious in years.”
“You don’t need to flatter me, it’s just warm rice and simple herbs in water. It was the same as if I was preparing tea.”
Fu Kong placed her elbow on the desk and watched him eat. She didn’t seem like she was in a hurry for him to finish. So he took his time to blow on the spoon and savor the taste with every bite.
She broke the silence, “You don’t need to call me madam. I’m not from an influential family or something similar. Although,” Her eyes wandered to the ceiling. “I suppose there have been a few legends and cults created based on some of the things I did when I was younger.”
Mareus choked on his food. “I’m sorry if I’ve offended you.”
Her eyes returned to him. Those black eyes, drawing him in like they were beckoning him somewhere comfortable and quiet, somewhere final.
“You didn’t offend me. Maybe if the importance of ‘the proper way of things’ was taught to me before I stepped into the world. But once I did I ended up finding it bothersome. It interests me, how mortals limit themselves in their interactions and put on performances to cater favor with one another. How, regardless of power or position, they’re constantly jockeying amongst themselves for the smallest gains.”
Her gaze drifted to the opposite end of the cave and instead of stopping at the stone wall, it felt like she saw to the end of Idao. Possibly even further if Mareus believed all of the stories about immortals. He wanted to know what the world looked like through her eyes. If he would be able to see that world.
She continued as if her attention never left him. “You have my permission to call me whatever you’d like.”
He thought for a moment before asking, “You’re going to teach me how to get justice for my home?”
She nodded.
“And you’re my savior.”
“You could say that.”
Placing his bowl down, Mareus resisted against his bandages and gave the best martial salute he could. “May I call you ‘Mistress’ then?”
Although it could still only be called a half smile, this was the biggest smile she had openly shown him so far.
“I suppose that will be the most accurate for our coming relationship. You’ll need to finish your food though before it gets cold.”
Mareus was in the middle of scraping the bottom of the bowl for the last of the congee. He glanced at the empty bowl and then to her and back at his bowl again. But, when he looked at her again a pot the size of his head was sitting on the desk.
Fu Kong removed the lid to reveal the steaming porridge filled to the brim.
“Take your time, it’ll stay warm as long as it’s in this pot and we won’t be moving on until you’ve finished every last bite.”
He felt like she was getting back at him for all of the food he wasted over the last two weeks.
Over in the next few days, he assumed. Mareus’ life was a constant cycle of sleeping and eating. He would finish off a bowl and take a nap and when he woke up, he would do it all over again. More than a few times, he suspected her of refilling the plot since it looked big enough for a handful of meals at most.
Maybe it was because he had finally talked to the stranger or maybe she had done something to the pile furs he slept on. But he couldn't remember the last time he felt so rested. Now that his injuries were recovering, the bandages felt like they were getting looser and he could move around more freely.
Even when he washed himself, they didn't secrete any more of that foul black sludge.
It was about his twentieth meal when he was finally getting sick of the congee. Bathing in the victory, Mareus rubbed his distended stomach after finishing off the pot. Even though he felt full, possibly even over full, he didn’t feel the same way he did when he would normally over eat. Instead, he felt healthier and more full of energy than he remembered ever feeling.
What kinds of herbs did she use?

2024.05.20 03:39 SageJarosz Ep 14: Celestial Immortal

Previous chapter
“I hate it.”
Mareus slapped his mouth and bit down on his lips in a futile attempt to capture his half-asleep words. His body tensed while listening for any signs of the stranger, bracing himself for some monster of a person to come rushing from the dark to finish him off.
Though, it didn’t matter in the end if they were paying attention to him or not. They clearly already knew where he was and, for some reason, chose to leave him alone after pulling him from the rubble and treating his injuries.
He clutched at his stomach, his hunger pangs goading him to push aside the anxiety and crawl his way towards the bowl still waiting patiently for him. There were no signs of it being changed or infested by any of the creatures hiding away, in fact, a gentle warmth still radiated from it. A pleasant aroma floated through the still air as if it had a will of its own, enticing him like some carnivorous flower lying in wait.
Mareus ignored his pain and fatigue as he absentmindedly made his way closer to the beckoning meal. What was he so worried about? If the stranger hadn’t done anything yet, then they probably weren’t going to from the start. It wasn’t like he was in any state to resist them anyway.
That’s right. He justified. It’s just sitting there, waiting for me.
The bowl was only a breath away now. Mareus stretched against his bandages enough for the wrappings around his fingers to brush the rim before the markings let out a faint light and constricted his body. He was almost there and wouldn’t give up, one more time he resisted their binding and was able to hook his finger on the inside of the rim.
Putting all the strength he had into the one finger he fought against the rough, uneven ground to reel in his catch. A faint glow lit up the black stone and his heart stopped before his restraints forced his arm back. Spilling his only food in a mocking halo as the bowl rolled on its side.
That was it, his only food mixed in with the wet dirt of the cave floor. He almost dove at it before realizing the intense hunger and drive he had was now fading away. His hunger was still there to some degree, but now it was more like an emptiness scratching at the back of his stomach. The overwhelming desire to eat was almost entirely gone.
A faint breeze brought his attention back to the bowl and he watched as markings like the ones on his bandages let out one last dim breath of light. When they went dark his hunger returned to the back of his mind.
After crawling back into his hole, the cave was filled with the sounds of hundreds of insects rushing over and feasting on the spilled meal. The echoes of chitin tapping on stone and trudging through the mush assaulting his ears. Covering his ears only replaced their frenzy with the sound of his blood flowing through his ears.
Mareus alternated between listening to the rhythmic thumps lulling him to sleep and the chittering that convinced him, more than once, that the insects had crawled in his ears. The minutes drawing into hours, maybe even days, as reason began slipping away.
A gentle clack of wood being placed on stone silenced the world.
He carefully rolled over and saw another bowl, the insects were gone, the mess was cleaned. It was like everything that happened was a dream, only this time he didn’t have this unnatural drive compelling him to reach the bowl.
Whatever the markings were meant to do, this one didn’t seem to have them. He watched as the cave life made their way back to his food. They didn’t attack it right away this time, instead they circled their prey waiting for the right time. Mareus closed his eyes and focused on listening for their movements when he heard a damp thud that must have been one of them falling in the food.
That sound must have been the signal the rest were waiting for because they converged on the meal and devoured with a gluttony he didn’t know they were capable of. Despite the gut churning sounds, he focused on every bit as he counted his heart beat.
Two thousand four hundred and twenty
seven.
The cave had finally settled down again as the insects returned to their hiding places. Mareus kept counting though, he had to stay focused so he could figure out how to tell when the stranger was coming. He had no idea how often they came by but he needed to learn anything he could if he wanted to make it back home.
Twenty-eight thousand seven hundred and ninety-five.
Muffled steps approached the bowl and wordlessly replaced it with another, the gentle clank dancing around the cave walls. Words wanted to leave his mouth, to ask the stranger questions, to make demands. But, what would he say, what could he say?
Mareus’ chest tightened as he tried to find the words, his mind struggling with the growing distraction of the empty feeling in his stomach. They were gone as silently as they arrived.
He started counting again. Using the hunger pangs to fight his body’s cries for sleep he waited out another four or five changes of the bowl. He couldn’t remember exactly anymore as his guard lightened and the exhaustion wrapped around him like a warm blanket. Against his best effort sleep finally took him.
The elders were watching over the younger generations going about their routines. The whole village was in the middle of doing their morning exercises with the sunrise, the bigger clans and families had their yards filled with people flowing from stance to stance, while the smaller families gathered in front of the Elder’s Hall or practiced in their gardens.
Before he knew it, Mareus was running errands and was racing pass villagers tending to fields of medicinal herbs and vegetables while guards kept their eyes on the edge of the forest for any signs of wild beasts.
Then one day a doctor from some big sect visited them and told him that he had the cure to his diverted meridians. The village elders held a big celebration in front of their hall and they had a special ceremony where Granny Hua accepted him as a disciple. When he looked out to the crowd, the sun shone on hundreds of smiling faces.
Tears ran down his face as he smiled and waved at everyone. The salty taste made the world shimmer like a painting being washed away.
Please don’t go. He thought.
The infection of reality found its way into his heart and the dream continued to shimmer before warping and twisting the scene from before.
Mountains of rubble replaced the beautiful homes that stood for generations. One after another the people fell while letting out muted screams. Smoke began to fill the air like some ghostly fog and ash painted the now faceless bodies strewn everywhere. Bodiless cries fought with one another to be helped.
Mareus fell to his knees at the center of the destruction while pleading. “Please, don’t do this. Don’t take them from me again.”
The one eyed man towered over him, tall enough for his hair to brush the clouds. The evil in his clenched grin poured out like a thick miasma that choked him as he watched Sister Mai rushing over.
He tried to scream at her to stay away but his voice was now completely cut off. Mareus now stood over himself watching the helpless child he truly was, he followed his own pleading gaze and turned to watch a young woman he recognized but couldn’t place at the moment.
She picked up a piece of a wooden beam and charged at him, her tears turning to blood as she let out a voiceless scream.
Mareus quickly searched the sky for his enemy, Where are they? Why is it so quiet?
When he looked back down his arm was through the back of the woman and he finally recognized the angry face staring daggers at him as the light left her eyes.
He watched as the giant man turned back to him and let Mai’s lifeless body fall to the ground. The crimson drenching the monster’s hand leaking and painting his own with the blood of the woman he called his big sister.
The one eyed man shot into the air and the force of the impact shook him awake.
It was easier to fight his exhaustion this time as he waited for the stranger to replace the bowl. When they replaced it this time, they lingered as if they wanted to say something. This time the anger and pain he felt didn’t let him hesitate.
“Wh-“ His dry unused voice turned into a breath. He cleared his throat and tried again. “Why
”
The effort of forcing that whisper was already difficult, he wanted to say so much more. He couldn’t tell if they were still waiting in the dark, or if they were even willing to listen. His voice was clawing to get out, he was tired of waiting.
His skin buzzed as he waited and moistened his throat. The question was out there now, at least the most important part. ‘Why?’ There was so much more racing through his mind that he could add while the presence remained silent.
Why me? What made you save me? Why didn’t you leave me with them? Why do I have to be alone?
An unseen pressure grew in the dark as his question went unanswered. It was like the chill he would get coming back late at night and he felt like something was watching him from the forest, waiting to pounce. It kept growing sharper until a sudden cool warmth touched the nape of his neck and gingerly ran down the length of his back.
A cold, yet familiar feeling voice finally broke the silence. “It would be a waste. Letting such a potential vanish from this world.”
The stranger brushed the matted hair from his neck. Their simple and straightforward gesture giving off the feeling of a beast playing with its catch knowing it could kill it at anytime.
“I feel for your loss, truly. My heart aches for the ill fate that placed those ‘experts’ in your home. I couldn’t allow your path to end because of a game between mere children.” Their voice danced between compassionate and venomous.
The gentle pressure of them rubbing his back relaxed him and Mareus became even more aware of how tired and sore his body was. Although, as they continued it felt like everything faded away. Not so much as if he was being relieved of everything, it was more like everything was being taken away and swallowed by a void that wouldn’t make him take it back.
Mareus sat up slowly and with a hoarse voice he asked. “What makes me so special?” He inhaled, “Why didn’t you stop them?!” His scream tore into his lungs and filled his throat with the taste of iron.
Water filled his eyes as he faced the disembodied presence.
The stranger gently embraced him, their cool robes enveloping him. “Poor child.”
“You could have saved all of th-em.” His trembling voice couldn’t hide the pain any longer. Still, Mareus stared through blurry eyes and did his best to look them in the face.
A thin hand brushed away his tears. “My sweet boy, I’m sorry I couldn’t be there sooner. Their battle had already moved south, and what they left behind
” They trailed off.
While wrapped in their arms he listened to the grief in their voice. Unsure of what to think anymore. Why did they wait so long? Why did they leave me here in the dark? Were they hurt too? Mareus found himself wondering if he was being selfish.
“Before I could chase after them, I sensed the faint trace of your life clinging on to any shred of hope. After digging you out and applying some emergency medicine I lost track of their energies. Instead of searching for them I made the decision to at least make sure you survived.”
Mareus realized that there was something ethereal in the way they talked. Their tone wasn’t distant, but at the same time it felt like they were a world away from him. The image of a mother apologizing for something she wasn’t responsible for popped in his mind.
His body began to feel lighter than it had been since he woke up in the cave. “Thank you.” He relented.
He gingerly wiped away his tears as if testing if his body would suddenly start listening to him. When he opened them again, the dark world that surrounded him expanded and he could now see all the way to the other wall of the cave.
Am I really not in the afterlife? He thought.
The formless shadow of his savior was replaced with a celestial fairy that stepped out from one of Elder Guo’s stories and descended into this pit to comfort him. She wore a snow white hanfu with a wide sash that hugged tightly against her. The sleeves and hem were far longer than normal like if the seamstress forgot to remove the excess material.
Her otherworldly appearance stood out against the darkness with her iridescent skin illuminating the cave. Her shadow like hair, even darker than the surroundings blackness. She looked like a master craftsman had picked the most exquisite material to craft a lifelike doll that would shatter if you looked at it the wrong way. Only to the fill that doll with the essence of deepest parts of the night sky.
Mareus completely forgot his fatigue as he collapsed into a bow and laid his head to the floor. In an attempt to imitate the older members of his village when speaking to the elders, he said. “I apologize for being so disrespectful. I humbly want to thank the generous immortal for saving this life.”
His body trembled from the effort of supporting his weight, but he continued to wait as sweat formed on the back of his neck and ran down his face. Unsure of what this heaven-like being would do to him if he had disrespected her further.

2024.05.20 03:15 Trash_Tia The anatomy of a mermaid.

I wasn't expecting a sea-world date.
Alex was my type.
He was dorky, kind of adorable, and he (really) loved marine life.
The guy was mesmerised, pressing his face against the tank, glued to the mermaid attractions who seemed delighted by his presence, gesturing him toward them. Well, the girls were.
The one singular male mermaid was seriously out of character, rolling his eyes.
2 hours later, the place was closing.
I had been sitting on a bench with a melted slushy for almost three hours, mulling my boyfriend's last words in my head.
”I'm just going to get photos of the dolphins, Kira!”
He'd stood me up.
For fish.
I was making my way toward the exit, when a slimy hand slammed over my mouth.
“Don't move.”
Half awake, I was dragged into a large room with a single tank filled to the brim.
When I lifted my head, an ethereal looking woman dangled my boyfriend over the edge.
Before I could cry out, those same slimy hands found my mouth, squeezing the breath from my lungs.
Alex was unconscious, crumpled in the man's arms. The world shifted when I glimpsed the blade. I saw my boyfriend's half lidded eyes, his parted lips, before his throat was sliced open, his body shoved into the water.
Alex sunk deep down, his blood polluting clarity, a cloud of deep red dragging him to the bottom.
I lunged forward, but I couldn't breathe, couldn't scream.
Someone was speaking, cold steel pressed to my throat.
But their words were white noise. Above me, the roof slid open, and in the centre of the sky, a perfect half moon illuminated the depths.
When a cruel blade was drawn across my throat, my breath choking, blood pooling from my mouth, there was a full moon.
I don't remember being dragged up ice cold metal steps. I don't remember my body hitting cool water, and plunging down, down, down.
What I do remember is a bright light.
The water enveloping me, cradling me, lulling me to sleep, a voice telling me everything was going to be okay.
I was her daughter now.
When I awoke, I was heavy.
Too heavy, like something was weighing me down.
Looking down at myself, a shriek tore from my lips, stolen away in explosions of bubbles.
My legs were gone, something slimy and wrong eating away my torso.
That same melodic murmur told me to stay calm, even when I was screaming.
I can't breathe.
My lungs felt dead.
Like I didn't need to breathe.
That disgusting thing attached to me was pulling me down.
“Look, Mommy! Look at the pretty mermaid!”
The little girl wasn't looking at me.
Twisting around, I found myself face to face with Alex.
Who was smiling.
"Smile.” a male voice muttered in my head.
In the corner of my eye, shadows had me surrounded, already warning me.
”Smile, or they'll feed us to the fucking sharks."

2024.05.20 03:13 micahwillarthy Part 3

Hurricane Georg.
Our first contact with the new world was a colossal hurricane. Veins of lightning shattered through the black, swirling clouds. I had just tried to calm the nerves of the ship when I saw Suri sitting in the hall beneath the control room.
She was in a lounge corner with her suitcase opened and her supplies scattered across the small table. The little light from the window illuminated her drawing for me to see over her shoulder.
The black and white sketch began at the bow of the ship. The figure of a man in facing the open ocean. Ahead of him, the familiar despair of Hurricane Georg. The man had his back towards the artist, but his stature sailed through the fierce storm without worry. His gaze only in the beautiful sight of home on the other side.
Her pencil began to etch the details of his crewmans jacket, "You have a gift, Suri. Truly, you do."
She was ahead of me, she did not jump or gasp as I had expected, "Thank you, Capi. I saw you in the reflection. Im hard to get the jump on."
"Then this shouldnt surprise you," I smiled and approached her table. "My capi stars are on the right side, "I stepped back and tapped my shoulder."
Disappointment inked her face, darkening her mood, "Dam."
I laughed and pulled up a chair. She had captured the view from the window perfectly and I made a point to tell her. As we talked the storm outside began to fade. The world around us was healed and the worries of yesterday had never existed.
Her eyes were near black, in color, and her skin was incredibly warm. Physical characteristic were useless to determine where a person was from, but 500 years ago, she would have fit at home with the people of the Middle East. Had I been a different man, her beauty and brain would make a perfect partner.
The longer I stared, the darker the world around us became. Until she broke my gaze and looked shocked at something through the window.
"Did you see that?"
"No, what was it?"
"I-Im not sure..." her face drained of color as the harsh rocking of the storm was interrupted by something else. Suri and I were flung off our chairs onto the floor, her supplies pelting us as they flew through the air. I tried to stand, but my legs were too soft to make it easy.
I struggled to a kneel using the bolted-down desk. Suri gasped and I looked down. The longer I looked, the itchier it became. Once more the world grew darker and I only had enough energy for a simple joke.
"Mr. Morgs was right about those things."
"Gud morning, Capi!" Ennay cheered from the wall-mounted screen.
I struggled to sit myself up. I was in the infirmary, only Ennay was there to greet me. My jacket was gone. All I had on was a white t-shirt and grey shorts.
"Officer Angelhart had your attire taken to be cleaned," Ennay chimed in, "Today is Wednesday, sir, 4:13am. Its the morning after you lost consciousness."
I thanked him and asked him to catch me up on the happenings in the passed half day.
"The reality is unclear, Capi, but Helmsman Archer believes we were attacked by a... a sea monster, sir."
"Archer? Hes no storyteller. Why?" I swung my legs over the bed, "get him down here or tell him im on my way."
Ennay surprised me with his fast response, "No. Sir, We had a breach. Ms. Aziz told the Doctor you had severed and artery during a spell of turbulence. The New Horizon had actually made contact with something what breached the hull. Damage Control responded in 4 minutes and were quick to contain flooding. However, we sustained a second breach."
Before he could continue, I dropped back onto the bed, "Whats the status?"
"On the New Horizon? Operational. A few sections had to be permanently sealed until we are out of this storm."
"And Damage Control?"
Ennay did not respond as quickly as he had been. It felt like an eternity before he told me, "6 casualties," the room fell completely silent. I couldnt even hear my heart beating, "5 fatalities. Sergant Franccigo Blanco is recovering in Infirmary 4C. He is unconscious, but has sustained gruesome wounds. Officer Angelhart declared a S.O.E. to assume your position. Otherwise,..."
"Yes, yes, the prosthetics. I hate that system."
"Well, sir, you are able to disable it."
"What?"
"Its not a very common scenario, but since we are not in International Sea, the law requiring your presence does not necessarily need to be enforced."
I sat back and thought for a second, "Ill discuss it with Dr. Mally. Where are they all?"
"Dr. Mally is in Infirmary 4C with Sergant Blanco. Officer Angelhart is your office filling out an incident report for both your accident and the breaches."
"Thank you, Ennay. Tell Max I am on my way and then let Dr. Mally know I will meet her shortly."
"Of course, sir."
My office was silent except for the fan gently spinning from the ceiling. Across from me was a young man, mid-twenties, with dusty blond hair. His uniform was perfect, he has even removed his hat on the perfect beat upon entering the room.
The appearance and demeanor any ship captain would be beyond proud to accept on his ship. It had just been dumb luck that he had lost both of his eyes to shrapnel sealing off the lower corridors during the state of emergency yesterday.
I poured Mr. Blanco a drink, 2444 Geoff Russel - The Hearty Mans Drink. I needed to finish the incident report, but Id never ask a man to relive what he had without a bit of buzz to his bite.
"So, Sargent Blanco, I-"
"You can call me, Fran, Capi."
"And you can call me Santago, for tonight anyway," I continued my questions. I tried my best to stay shallow and not dive deep into the pain Fran had endures just hours ago.
We talked about the 5 fatalities.
"Did you... see... them die?"
The gauze replacing his eyes stared at me, blankly. His face was uncanny, unhuman. Like the man inside may actually have been a 6th dead body.
"No," he quickly took a drink, "I did hear them, though. They yelled and screamed for me to open the door. I- I couldnt see. I thought the sea water had poisoned me somehow. I kept rubbing and rubbing my eyes hoping to get whatever radioactive stuff out of my head..." He took a breath. He was remarkably calm. Agitated, of course. But calm.
He continued, "I looked through the window on the bulkhead and the last thing I saw was Aleks staring back at me. His eyes were... he was calling out for me, I am sure of it. But something got him and he was sucked out."
"I am so sorry, Fran," I tried to write as quietly as possible to not remind him of the formality, "Do you know what got him?"
He finished his glass. As he set it down, he missed the table. The cup did not shatter, but it had jolted Fran from his memory. He lost his composure.
He started yelling at me about a horrific beast he had seen. How Aleks, Private Aleksander Igorsen, had been encased in blood and black sludge. He swung his hands wildly at the table in a rage, but had only managed to knock over a lamp.
Pity does not begin to describe what I felt watching him. Like a bleeding animal continuing to run from the wolves despite not knowing he was already surrounded. In him, I saw death. I saw anger. I saw fear. I saw what he was feeling imaging the creature that killed his men.
I grappled with him, trying to make my location known and always talking to him. I was not some monster from the unknown blackness set on hunting him and he needed to know that. He continued to struggle until I had completely engulfed his whirlwind into a hug. The screams turned to cries and then to whimpers.
After some time, I dismissed him back to his room and instructed Ennay that he was on suicide watch. Sergant Franccigo Blanco had earned a promotion or a permanent dismissal, whichever he wanted, but I needed him to take time to himself before I reminded him where we are.
The storm was intense, but at least it was consistent. By Katzs reckoning, we are approaching the halfway point of this hurricane. We had entered it 51 hours ago and Katz had said we are another 50 away from clear skies.
Unfortunately for all of us, Katzs theory was not seen through.
It began with our solar panelling being severed from their operating power banks. That was not a major issue, hydropower was our primary source. The issue arose when the New Horizon began to spin.
I had radioed the Helmsman demanding why we are weighing anchor, but the anchor was still resting above water. He said no one dropped the anchor. Something else entirely had us. We rushed to every window, every pane of glass to search for whatever it was that was stopping us.
Ennay spoke out, "Capi, Major Gorlammi has spotted our snag at 129 degrees. Nearest viewpoint is Residential Room L3D, assigned to L-"
I ignored the rest, I needed to see what was in that window. Luckily for me, Lucy Partridge was not home. I burst through the door and, for the first time, I saw a behemoth of a serpent-like creature sticking out of the water. I could not see a head, nor tail. I also had no idea if what I saw was the body or an appendage connected to some inconceivably large beast.
After enough time, I manage to figure out one of the ships heavy guns had pierced the creature and was holding us together. Our best bet was to either rotate the gun and hope its dislodged or to remove the gun entirely.
I relayed this information to Ennay to alerted the Gunner Teams and Damage Control. Yet, none of them would be given the chance. In the distance, silhouetted by sparks of lightning the size of the ship, I saw the head of the creature. It must have been miles away, but the size was unparalleled. Its head leaped from the water and swiveled back towards us. It was like a colossal eel. Flashes of light showed through its skin like veins until it sent a surge into the gun and into the ship.
The lights went out across the boat. The only light was the occasional flash from outside. It was completely dark, but I knew it was still coming for us.
I ran out of the quarters as emergency lights slowly burned. The hallway must have been 100 feet long before Id reach the staircase, but when I was halfway through, my feet left the ground.
I felt weightless for a moment. The lights burned out and all around me was darkness. My heart was incredibly slow or maybe time had slowed. I felt the doorframe to Mrs. Partridges room snap against my elbow. There was no pain. I didnt even feel pain when glass cut across my back as I was hurled through the shattered window.
I crashed into the water, it must have been hundreds of feet below me. I was in shock. I looked around and all I saw was darkness. Then, suddenly, all I saw was light. The eel sent a pulse through its body and for the first time I saw the monster entirely. It surrounded the ship above water, coiled all about the waves, and entangled the entire ocean as deep as I could see.
This is not a colossal eel surviving a hurricane.
This colossal eel is the very being causing the hurricane.
A cosmic terror named Hurricane Georg.

2024.05.20 03:12 Griff_T Scavenger’s Reign Cancellation Hope

Scavenger’s Reign Renewal Hope
So.
My favorite show of perhaps the last decade was cancelled by David Zas-$&@%#* and sold to Netflix. If you haven’t seen the show, it’s an incredibly beautiful, unnerving, emotionally powerful story of the survivors of a cargo ship crash on a truly alien planet. It is, undoubtedly, the most mature sci-fi I have seen in years, grappling with existentialism on the most well-realized biome of all time.
This is a tragedy. But! Like the survivors of the Demeter, all hope is not lost. We can survive the parasite of David Zas-%£#+>*, and try to let this story continue–it deserves to continue, evolve, and grow. It’s not actually cancelled-sources at Netflix according to Variety are on the fence. The debut on the 31st of May is an opportunity for us, fans of sci-fi, to remind the streaming services we are their audience and we care about new, original stories with deep character development, passionate craft, and quality.
We care about art.
So if you liked the show, if you loved the show, if you have your uncle’s Netflix password or an ex’s or a random neighbor who leaves their passcode unencoded and visible through the window, please log on and watch it again. If you haven’t seen it, please give it a shot. It’s a really, really good show. It doesn’t deserve to end like the Expanse or any of the other quality sci-fi shows ended before their time. So give it a double thumbs up or whatever Netflix uses for their metrics these days. Upvote this too!
Your Levi is counting on you.

2024.05.20 03:07 ibrajim19 Some thoughts on the series and movies

Hi all
Yesterday finally I watched the two movies and want to share some thoughts that I got between today and yesterday and found this amazing subreddit
First of all I don't want to be a hater, I only want to have a little talk of this amazing show and have a healthy discussion over this show
  1. WOW!!! Amazing !!!!I love these f***** movies, I feel like a teen again, I was afraid that since they are compilation movies, it lost some essence/soul of the original serie, but I was wrong, the animation, characters, plot, battle all it's here with no changes
  2. The charisma of Kamina, Kitan and other member are amazing, they don't have too much time in screen but I love the characters
  3. The ending of Nia and Simon, oh boy I thought I could handle it, but it hurts as much as the first time I saw the show some years ago, deep inside me, I was hoping that this time it would be a little different. but I cannot change or force my vision over the original author's intentions, for moments like this I can only remember the famous Dr Seuss phrase "Don't be sad because it's over be happy because it happened"
  4. The ending let me made me ask some questions, I don't know if there's a official answer but I want to share it
    • After Simon's farewell at his wedding, did he have contact with the rest of the team? Did everyone go their own way? What do you think?
    • After Simon's death maybe he can see again Kamina, Kitan, Nia and the rest of Team Gurren in that "paradise" we saw in the final battle at least it's I want to believe

2024.05.20 03:06 Griff_T Scavenger’s Reign Renewal Hope

This cancellation is a tragedy.
But! Like the survivors of the Demeter, all hope is not lost. We, like Sam, can do our best to survive the parasite of David Zas-%£#+>*, and try to let this story continue–it deserves to continue, evolve, and grow.

2024.05.20 02:59 TheOneTrueAnimeGod Sionia Chapter 14

Sionia
Chapter 14
Map First Previous
“Lord Wyatt, you are needed” Called Lars that shook me out of my fascinating reading about dragon neuts.
“Yes.” I said as I pulled back the curtain.
“The city guard requests to speak with you. They are restricting entrance to Avalon given the latest attack by Mardor at Black Gate of Rowan.” Lars explained with a salute and chest bump
With a sigh, I handed my book to Gus and exited the carriage and was very impressed with the massive three story gatehouse and huge stone block readouts connected on each side. I was met by a forty something looking man of average build with black hair and dark eyes flanked by six fully fitted out soldiers.
“I am Rhys Redith captain of the guard here in Avalon. You must be Count Ryan Wyatt.” Rhys introduced himself with the question.
“Yes, I am Ryan Wyatt.” I responded with a frown and knotted brow.
“We have been expecting your arrival. The king has ordered us to assist you and provide hospitality. I am to escort you to the fortress and the rest of your party to Duggan's inn.” Said Rhys with a salute and formal bow.
“That will not do! I have several wards under my care which several are nobility.” I objected to the plan given.
“I was not aware. I will of course take you to the fortress where Lady Ludmilla will address your concerns.” Replied Rhys with a salute and bow then motioned for me to follow.
“Follow him, Jace .” I said to my new driver and climbed into the carriage.
The bridge over the north side of the Paradise River to the island of Avalon was very long at around a quarter mile or so. The readouts of the gatehouse extended a good ways into the river which had several firing positions. I suspected that the river rose and fell with a possible rainy and dry season which was why the readouts could prevent an army from getting behind the gatehouse or access to the bridge from land. The island side gatehouse was flush with the city walls and protruded into the river was equally as impressive with a descent sized recessed portico and draw bridge porch extension.
Thinking back to my travels through Europe, I decided Avalon looked like the city of East Looe, Cornwall in England but not as topographically elevated and with more renaissance style architecture than back on earth. The Roman style arched bridge was very much what we just rode across. The fortress of Avalon itself was at the highest point which was off to the left on the far east side of the island and most up stream point on the islands.
The Fortress keep was decent but still half the size of Duke Boasag's Buanna. I realized that the reason for putting my servants at an inn was because of the lack of space. However, I was determined to stay with my wards no matter the violation of etiquette it might cause. As my carriage pulled up to the entrance with the fortress that had both iron gates and metal reinforced wooden doors that were a good six feet wide and twelve feet tall each. These doors were set into no less than a three foot thick wall.
Passing through the gate was a small bricked paved courtyard that was about forty to fifty feet wide in a more or less oval shape. I saw a host of servants and two well dressed ladies waiting at the main doors to the fortress's central keep.
“Lord Wyatt, welcome to Avalon. I am Viscountess Ludmilla Skafhoggr and this is my mother Baroness Grogda Wode.” Stated a quiet plump pretty faced brown haired woman in a gaudy yellow with purple accented dress with unicorns all over it and a matching unicorn hat whose horn protruded a good foot from her forehead.
“Yes, it is a very deep pleasure to meet you as well.” Stated Lady Grogda a good looking woman who seemed to be in her mid to late thirties with black hair and unusual olive colored eyes. Her lite brown dress was quiet plain compared to her daughter's which was kind of comical in their contrast.
“The pleasure is mine for sure in meeting you ladies.” I said pouring it on a bit thick with a formal bow and sweep of my arm.
“I do not understand. Why are all your people with you?” Lady Ludmilla asked looking toward Captain Rhys but speaking to me.
“I have many wards under my protection. Thus, it is impossible to leave them alone without my presence as there are many who would try and take advantage of helpless young girls.” I stated but that failed miserably when Freya and the other three Asgardians approached fully armed with their swords.
“I would hardly call them helpless!” Spat Lady Grogda with a bit of contempt as the Asgardians were better looking than her.
“Despite appearances, they need my protection. After all, I am their guardian as I freed them from captivity.” I responded with a bit of admonishment in my voice.
“Yes, we have heard the tale. You are quiet the knight in shinning armor.” Lady Ludmilla said with obvious sarcasm.
“It is what it is. The wards will be with me wherever I am. If that is at an inn or camping on the side of the road, so bit it.” I stated with irritation.
“Do not be silly. We can host your wards and personal attendant. However, we must insist that the rest stay in the inn over there.” Lady Ludmilla said pointing to a three story building that was about fifty yards away.
“That is closer than expected. However, I accept. My people can stay at the inn while you host me and my wards.” I stated with another formal bow.
“Good, now come and we will see to your comfort.” Lady Ludmilla said with a bit of a laugh with Lady Grogda giving a small laugh and a wicked grin.
I immediately turned to Lars, Razor and Meowth and ordered that they maintain a watch on the carts and carriage around the clock as I did not want any lapse where someone would try to take advantage. I called to the wolf kin brothers to continue to protect the girls inside the fortress. Pointing to Lars, I told him to take our prisoner Andros to the adventure's guild office and turn him over and letting them know he was caught trying to steal from me. Tell them know I will see them on morrow to see if Andros was telling the truth or just lying. Turning with a smile and motioned to Freya and the girls to follow me with Gus right behind me.
The inside of the fortress was decently furnished though it had more of the appearance of a military outpost than a holding of wealth as it looked quiet spartan. I was led to an upper chamber where Lady Grogda had already ordered a bath filled by the time we had arrived.
“I will see to you personally” Lady Grogda stated with that same wicked grin again.
I suddenly felt as though I was a piece of meat put on display before a hungry wolf. I steeled myself to not recoil as I just felt off with this lady.
“See to your master's baggage.” Lady Grogda ordered Gus who was surprised by the command.
Gus gave me a slight shaking of his head and left the chamber. Lady Grogda then proceeded to strip me with efficiency. Once I was naked, she suddenly took her time looking at my nakedness. She even traced my scars on my back with a click of her tongue. Walking over to the tub, I climbed in and sat down.
“Spoil sport” Said Lady Grogda as she grabbed a wash cloth.
“Do not get my wounds wet.” I said warning Lady Groda of what the doctor had told me.
“Why? Your wound is almost well healed. The stitches can be pulled out except here” Stated Grogda and tapped me on my left shoulder blade.
“I have been using a special salve from the high elves. I did not realize it was healing that fast. However, I was warned that getting my wound wet would effect my healing.” I repeated what Doctor Zalzwarth told me.
“Very well.” Groda conceded.
Lady Grogda began washing me where she was absolutely taking her time. It was obvious that she was deliberately feeling me up for her own pleasure. When she grasped my manhood. I stood up and said, “The water is cold and I am tired and hungry!”
“Humph” Pouted Lady Grogda her displeasure but began to rinse me.
Just as I was stepping out of the tub, Gus entered slightly out of breath as he had run to get my clothes with Lukas my footman helping. I sighed with relief as Gus helped me don my dressing gown.
“Old Maude will be here momentarily to apply your salve.” Gus said with a salute.
“Very good.” I replied to Gus then turned to Lady Grogda and said, “I was told you are a Dowager Baroness. Is that not so?” I blatantly asked appearing as innocent as I could.
“I will see you at the dinner bell hour.” Lady Groda said with a sort of half wave salute and stormed out of the chamber in a huff.
“Thank you, Gus. I actually thought I would have to literally fight to save my personal honor.” I remarked with a laugh.
“It was my pleasure, Lord Wyatt.” Gus responded and joined me in laughing.
Old Maude came about twenty minutes later and applied my salve and chatted about how excited she was to be in Avalon and wanting to visit one of the apothecary shops. I gave her permission but have one of the guards accompany her.
About an hour later and I was fully shaven and dressed, I heard a large bell ringing from a bell tower not far away from my chamber. With that, I headed down to the great hall that was just off the main entrance way. I was met by Lady Ludmilla who escorted me to Viscount Skafhoggr chair where she seated herself to my left. Lady Grogda appeared wearing a new pink dress and seated herself to my right. The one missing was the Viscount.
“Where is Lord Skafhoggr?” I asked Lady Ludmilla with a raised eyebrow.
“He is meeting with one of the military commanders. I believe they are deciding on how large a levy they must raise to battle the bastards of Mardor.” Replied Lady Ludmilla as she clapped her hands for servants to begin serving the evening meal.
Four exhausting hours later, I was back in my chamber with my nerves completely shot. The constant fawning and mindless chatter from Lady Ludmilla as well as the constant groping from Lady Grogda under the table had stained me to the max. I was ready for bed and was glad to sink into the lavender scented sheets. Gus grabbed a thin pallet and two blankets. Blowing out the candles he stepped into the hallway closing the door behind him. He would outside my door as custom demands while traveling.
A little over a half an hour later after Gus left, the door opened and closed quickly. I could not see in the darkness but relaxed when Freya spoke softly and slipped into bed with me. Freya did her magic on me as she mounted me taking me to new heights of pleasure. I quickly forgot all about the overly eager pursuit of the Dowager Baroness as I shared the pleasures of being with Freya. After we had sated ourselves completely, we slept peacefully in a loving embrace.
The morning came with a knock on my door that woke both Freya and I. I moaned but Freya nudged me on the chin.
“Time to wake you lazy bones.” Freya said with a laugh.
“I am not a morning person.” I said with a groan.
“Don't I know it! You were quiet the beast were you not?” Freya teased then laughed at me.
The knock on the door was more instant as I rose and put on my dressing gown. Opening the door slightly was Gus and the Dowager Baroness.
“It is early, what is it?” I asked.
“We have prepared a very special meal for you this morning.” Said Lady Grogda with a frown while she tried to look around me into the chamber.
“I see. Well, give me some time to properly dress and I will be down shortly.” I stated and continued to Gus “Have Lukas bring my shaving kit.”
“Right away, Lord Wyatt.” Gus said as he motioned down the hall where I assumed Lukas was.
About forty five minutes later and having snuck Freya out of my chamber, I was fully shaved and dressed in my dark red outfit and black beret hat that actually looked really good on me. Upon entering the great hall, I saw Lady Ludmilla seated. Lady Grogda taking me by the arm led me again to the Viscount's chair where she seated herself next to me.
“Where is Lord Skafhoggr, Lady Ludmilla?” I asked her directly.
Lady Ludmilla was quiet for a moment then said, “I guess he is sleeping. The meetings with the military commanders drag on for hours and hours. I hardly ever see him these days.” Lady Ludmilla said with a shrug of her shoulders.
“Is that so. Very well as it can not be helped. Please send my regards to Lord Skafhoggr for his hospitality. I was informed that the king would have a messages for me that Lord Skafhoggr was to give me. Could you ask Lord Skafhoggr for them?” I asked as I suspected something was just not right.
“Oh. Ah. I will of course ask my Lord Vincent for the king's message once morning meal is finished.” Lady Ludmilla said and looked discombobulated.
“I see. Please do so. The king ordered me to arrive in Camelot immediately. I can not dally and spend extra time as I normally would do. I hope you understand.” I said making extra emphasis on the king's order part.
“Yes. What the king commands we all must obey.” Lady Ludmilla said sourly but not looking at me.
Lady Ludmilla then clapped her hands and the servants brought in the morning meal. What surprised me was my meal was different from everyone else. Looking at both Lady Ludmilla and Lady Grogda something in the back on my head screamed warning warning.
The silver plate before me was a type of stew with a strong overpowering spice scent. I frowned and began to think hard and fast.
“This is a specialty from the High Valley region. I hope you like it.” Lady Grogda said with no expression at all.
My alarm bells went off even stronger this time. A footman came over to fill my cup which I deliberately knocked over and profusely apologized for my clumsiness.
“You know, I am from the High Valley region too. I have never been a fan of overly spiced foods. Lets see how spicy it is.” I stated and took a scoop with a spoon and handed it to the footman to taste.
The footman was surprised but more than happy to taste the food as it was obvious that food for the staff was very plain and simple.
“You should not do that! It is not right!” Lady Grogda said as she stood up showing more alarm than outrage.
The footman had already consumed the sample where he at first looked like he liked it. However, he suddenly started to choke as his face turned bright red and falling to his knees. Lady Ludmilla stood up in horror as the footman was gagging begging for water. I handed him my silver chalice with what I assumed was apple cider where he chugged it down then begged for more.
Finally, after three more cups of water given by another footman, first footman just lay on his back almost in a stupor. It was as if his mind was blank.
“What is this?” I asked as I pointed to my meal looking at both Lady Ludmilla and Lady Grogda.
“I do not know!” Said Lady Ludmilla looking at her mother with a strange look.
“Do not give me that! What did you do?” I demanded with a my voiced raised and now pointing my finger at them.
“It was a love potion. It was to make you like me.” Said Lady Grogda meekly and looking sheepishly at the ground.
“Seriously! That was more than a simple love potion!” I yelled my outrage.
“I swear that is all it was. I had to hide its not so pleasant taste with spice.” Lady Grogda stated her defense but still not able to look me in the eye.
“Lady Ludmilla, I must now ask that you bring me the king's message as I am now leaving Avalon.” I commanded with rage in my countenance.
Lady Ludmilla fled the great hall without replying. Lady Grogda just sat down with her head down looking at the floor saying nothing.
With exasperation, I called out to my people. “House of Wyatt, Ladies and girls we are leaving! Quickly gather your things and be out front within a little span!”
With that, I stormed out of the great hall to the shock of all present. Up in the guest chamber, I changed clothes into my bluejeans, a blue shirt and a tan leather vest. Pulling on my boots and strapping on my weapons belt, I looked over seeing Gus and Lukas already packed up my discarded clothing and was ready to leave as they were staying clear of my angry outbursts.
Down at the carts, I ordered my guards to ready themselves to leave. I sent Lukas to call all the servants in the inn to be ready to leave immediately. Razor and Meowth jumped down from their perch on the first two carriages with questioning looks.
“They tried to poison me! Can you believe it?” I said angrily as I swept my arm to point at the fortress.
“Meow Lord Wyatt, that is clawful. Do you want meow to use them like a scratching post?” Asked Meowth as her tail went straight in what I assumed was either surprise or anger.
Razor just gave a low grumbling growl with teeth bared as he looked at the fortress.
Forty minutes later as my people were loading up, Lady Ludmilla approached with her head down.
“I am sorry Lord Wyatt. It seems you do not have any messages from the king.” Lady Ludmilla said never once looking me in the eye.
“I see. Send a message to the king that I left Avalon today and as commanded traveling as quickly as I can. The king is expecting my update so make sure it is properly sent!” I said with a warning.
I ordered a florse saddled for I needed fresh air as I was still furious. I actually led our people out and toward the main north south road which Nick panicked a bit and settled with riding next to me. As we approached the main crossroads of the city, I saw a large dinning hall and ordered a halt for all of our people to have breakfast. The meal consisted of roasted mutton, eggs, apple pancakes and apple jam. They also had fresh chilled milk and apple cider which really went well with the sweet dishes. Our group apparently cleaned them out and they had to turn away a few customers until mid day.
After breakfast, I went to the adventurer's guild that was a few buildings to the south. It was a four story building of decent size. I allowed Old Maude with a one of the house guards to go to the apothecary shop across the road along with the two Alphardian servants Aura and Sylvia. Inside the adventurer's guild, I asked for Marine as instructed. It was then I learned that Marine was Zack Talley's girl where they were to marry soon as she proudly let me know her good news.
“Zack said to tell you this is a level one escort. Whatever that means.” I repeated what Zack had told me to say.
“Thank you. It simply means Zack thinks there would be no problems and just being present is enough to discourage any potential thieves. The total is two hundred fifty denari for basic escort with an A ranked adventurer.” Marine said with a smile
After paying the fee for the job request, I asked Marine to speak to someone about Andros that was brought in by man guard Lars.
“I am Supervisor Etan Borg and assistant to Guild Master Henry Stewart. It is a pleasure to be at your service Count Wyatt.” Stated Etan with a salute and bow.
“Pleasure is mine.” I replied with a salute and nod of my head.
“We have investigated Andros. His party the Finders of Avalon specialize in retrieving lost items or stolen goods from thieves. It appears his party was specifically requested to recover a lost ventu volpis. We do not have any more details for the job other than this.” Etan stated as he read from a page in his hand.
“Who hired them to steal from me? Make no mistake, they were hired to steal from me!” I said as I was showing my anger and frustration.
“Normally, we would not disclose who posted job requests to those not apart of the contract. However, given the circumstances, I was instructed to tell you it was Viscountess Lady Ludmilla. It seems she contracted and paid a merchant from Xanadu for a ventu volpis. It is our understanding that merchant was placed on a Quenya trade ship where he will go on trial for his many crimes in Svarta. The Finders of Avalon should not have tried to take your ventu volpis. Nor should they have taken on the job given the crimes of the merchant without more information.” Etan explained what the guild knew.
“What will happen to Andros?” I asked frankly.
“The Guild Master will hold a hearing with S and an A ranked members who will advise on the issues. I expect he will be found guilty but will escape the ten year punishment. More like one to two years of labor for the guild doing low ranked jobs that no one wants while being supervised by myself or a C ranked or higher adventurer. His pay will be one third of normal with the rest going to repay the guild and costs associated with his lapse in judgment.” Etan replied with a shrug of his shoulders.
“I see. The thing that irks me is they attacked my people and wounded one of my guards with a slinger's stone.” I explained my outrage.
“I was not aware of this fact. Master Stewart will compensate you as the law requires. Unfortunately, Master Stewart left for Camelot for meetings with the war counsel on Astria's response to the Empire's latest invasion. I will send a filoxis to let Master Stewart know that there was injury, offense and honor requirements. I understand you will be traveling to Camelot and am certain Master Stewart will seek you out to give you a formal apology and see you are properly compensated.” Etan stated with a salute and bow.
“Good enough. Let me know the outcome of the hearing for Andros. I do not like loose ends and a potential enemy looking for revenge.” I said mater of factually.
“Understood. I will relay your concerns to Master Stewart. Etan replied with another salute and bow.
Leaving the adventure's guild, I decided to visit the tradesman's guild and merchant's storefront while Old Maude was still busy across the street. The girls came with me as they had been requesting things like combs, brushes and scented oils plus a few other special feminine items they needed.
Once all the girls got what they were needing and getting those items stowed with their baggage, Old Maude came back with a small crate filled with items to make medicines. While the baggage was being loaded and sorted, I went to see the information broker's desk and inquired about Chamberlain Robert Duffy. I paid the requested fee of one erythro given his status in the city. I was shown a file which listed the qualities, character and known habits of Robert. There was a section about vices and food preferences. The only vice was seeing a woman who was a widow listed as a paid mistress. Basically, Robert was a straight as an arrow honorable man. I smiled as the report made me feel better about who I was helping.
Finally, with everyone loaded up, we headed out of the city of Avalon over the southern main bridge and gate that was just like the north one but slightly longer with a guard tower protected draw bridge section to let ships pass. After about two hours, I had calmed down enough that I rode in the carriage as was expected of a person of rank. I just looked out seeing nothing but the vast wheat fields of the Capital Region realizing how lucky I had been to escape the evils of the ladies of Fortress Avalon.
